From the Director's Desk

Greetings, Friends of the Arts Center!

Did you know that the Arts Center (both inside and out) is a public space during our hours of operation? Anyone can take a stroll through the building to peer at the artwork in our upper and lower galleries. Anyone can come to enjoy the grounds for a picnic, read a good book, draw, or even just bear witness to the nature that surrounds the Arts Center. Deer, squirrels, and native birds often frequent the property, making it a beautiful space to relax. Our faculty, staff, and volunteers have been working very hard to organize, tidy, and revive our outdoor spaces. We don’t just want you to come and see a show or take part in a class, workshop, or summer camp; we want you to have a fully immersive experience. This year, be prepared to experience so many lovely changes to not only our patio space by Straw Hat Theatre, but also our outdoor alcove space off the upper gallery. This space will not only be a place for community members to reflect but also be used as

an outdoor classroom space with adjustable benches that can turn into drawing tables. I could go on and on about how special this place truly is. If you have never visited us before, call me. Go on… get your phone or computer and contact me. Better yet, stop in and say, “hello!”

We want everyone to celebrate their unique creative spirit and share their talents. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or have never picked up a pencil in your life, it doesn’t matter. We want you here within our walls, exploring and creating alongside us. I still can’t believe that it has been over a year since I joined the Arts Center as its Executive Director. I’ve met so many lovely individuals and have had the honor of partnering with so many local businesses and organizations, (with more to come). Tickets are non-refundable, but if we have seats available at a different performance of the same production, we're happy to move them for you. If you arrive after a show has started, you may need to wait until intermission for an usher to seat you safely, as Straw Hat actors frequently use the aisles to enter and exit the performance space.

Creative Writing Classes

Poetry for teens/adults with Ray Williams 6 weeks beginning June 25

6-7 p.m. class fee $40 No materials fee, but students are expected to bring their own writing tool and journal/notebook. limit of 15 students

Throughout this sixweek course, students will not only craft and workshop their own poems, but also learn about the importance of poetry being spoken. Speech and poetry writing techniques, articulation, and performance will be emphasized.

Narrative Poetry & Microfiction Workshop (2-day) for teens & adults with April Naoko Heck August 11 & 18

7-8 p.m.

$18 (includes both sessions) No materials fee; students should bring a pen and paper or an electronic writing device.

Everyone has stories to tell, and the compressed structure of narrative poems and microfiction can harness these stories with concision, power, and eloquence. We will read masterful examples and use writing prompts to generate our own personal narratives.

Writers can experiment with both poetry and prose, learning how lineation can achieve various artistic effects.

AAC music students have been accepted into music programs at schools such as Vanderbilt University, The Ohio State University, The Eastman School of Music, and Baldwin Wallace.

Instruction in violin, viola, and cello is offered using the nurturing teaching method developed by Dr. Shinichi Suzuki. Students may begin to study on child-sized instruments as young as 4 years of age. Teaching methods especially adapted to young children are used. Parents are an essential part of the process as they attend their child’s private lessons and practice with the child at home.

Jonathan Robinson- NEW & Summer Time Brush Up for Flutists

Johnathan Robinson is a young musician with a strong determination and will to teach music. Starting later than most, he began his flutist journey in high school being mainly self-taught. During high school he quickly rose through the ranks and became a high-seated member of several ensembles and even earned seats in OMEA District 5 Honors band and Honors Jazz Band. His love of music has lead him to study music performance at Bowling Green State University under the renowned flutist Dr. Roberta Michel. Since his arrival to college Johnathan has joined several chamber styles groups, becoming the piccolo player for the Coloratura Flute Quartet, he also plays as a church musician in Toledo, and has earned the roll of lead 2nd flute in the BGSU Symphonic band.

Students can expect to learn a wide variety and musical styles and repertoire. They will be exposed to different etudes, scales, and technique exercises based on their own playing abilities to promote musicality, proper expression, and overall growth as a musician. Students will be challenged and encouraged to explore all they can in music, and find a passion for what they play. The overall learning outcomes of taking lessons is to become a confident, strong, and independent musician.

Junior Vocal Ensemble for ages 7–9

Come sing with us! This fun and energetic group is the perfect place for young singers to explore their voices in a supportive and creative environment. Students will learn the fundamentals of vocal technique, including breathing, posture, tone, and diction—all through ageappropriate exercises and songs. The group will sing a variety of musical theatre favorites and occasionally try out simple choral pieces to build harmony and ensemble skills. This class is a great stepping stone for kids who may be interested in private voice lessons in the future.

Youth Vocal Ensemble for ages 10–14

Take your love of singing to the next level! This ensemble is designed for pre-teens and teens who want to strengthen their vocal abilities and build confidence in a group setting. With a focus on foundational vocal technique—like breath control, tone production, vocal health, and blend— students will prepare and perform songs primarily from the world of musical theatre, with some choral repertoire included for ensemble experience. This is an ideal class for young performers preparing for solos, musicals, or private voice training.

The Press Play Orchestra celebrates the music behind today's most beloved stories, from fantasy adventures and animated classics to blockbuster films and iconic video games. This performance will feature orchestral music from some of today's most celebrated franchises and soundtracks, including Spirited Away, The Lord of the Rings, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Final Fantasy VII, Pirates of the Caribbean, and more!

Ballet Theatre Ashtabula

School of Dance

BTA School of Dance provides students with a strong technical foundation via expert instruction and personal attention, in a studio space designed with safety and artistic excellence in mind. Our studio has a shock-absorbing, basket-weave construction sprung floor surfaced with stateof-the-art marley, enhancing performance and reducing the risk of injury. Many former BTA students have gone on to dance professionally in companies such as Alonzo King’s Lines Ballet, Momix, Alberta Ballet, Sarasota Ballet, Hubbard Street II, Les Ballets Trockadero, Ailey II, and Elisa Monte Dance, or have danced professionally for major cruise lines and in national tours of Broadway shows. Others have gotten their degrees in dance from universities including The Juilliard School, Butler University, Mercyhurst University, and the University of Cincinnati.

Dancers at this level will learn posture, flexibility, and coordination using music and expression, developing a strong foundation necessary for classical ballet training. Fun and beautiful ballet concepts are introduced. Dancers will learn vocabulary and build a foundation in ballet technique prior to entering into our leveled classes.

Ballet II with Trinity Stevens 8 weeks beginning June 16

Ballet II students take two classes per week and focus on developing technical abilities as well as artistic expression. Dancers develop self-confidence, coordination, balance, and musicality, while learning the discipline of the art form. Junior Division Dancers are invited to join Ballet Theatre Ashtabula to participate in the Nutcracker Season and the Spring Dance Recital. Parent/teacher conferences are held the last week of classes to provide an opportunity for parents to learn of their student’s progress in the program.

BTA Class Policies

Ballet II requires 2 ballet classes per week; may add Modern + barre (possibly center) of one III/IV class

Ballet III requires 3 ballet classes per week, Pointe if appropriate, and one elective class (Student may add more if they choose).

Ballet IV requires 4 ballet classes per week, Pointe, and one elective class (student may add more if they choose).

CLASS PLACEMENT: : Class placement is determined by experience, maturity, and ability rather than age. More than one year is often needed in any given level. Our main concern is to provide each student with the training necessary for their stage of development. If a change to another level is appropriate, parents & student will be notified. Parents are welcome to request a conference concerning a child’s progress.

OBSERVING CLASSES: Especially in the case of younger students, parents and friends are asked not to observe classes except when invited. Children are often shy and distracted when they have an audience. Family and friends will be invited to observe the last class of the term. If parents have concerns about a child’s progress, a special observation day may be arranged.

CLASS ATTIRE: Ballet: Students should wear either pink tights and a solid-colored leotard, or white or black tights and a ballet fitted T-shirt. Ballet slippers in pink, white, or black should be worn for technique classes. Hair should be neatly groomed away from the face. Basic Dance: Comfortable clothing such as leotards, footless tights, running pants, t-shirts, etc., that allows students to move easily.

Divisions

YOUNG CHILDREN’S DIVISION (CREATIVE MOVEMENT, PRE-BALLET): Classes at this level are educationally structured and learning based while emphasizing fun and creativity, with the goal of nurturing students through teaching rhythm, musicality, coordination, movement, and creative expression.

JUNIOR COMPANY DIVISION (BALLET I & II): Classes at this level focus on vocabulary, memorization, coordination, and balance, while introducing elements of artistic expression. Junior Division dancers are invited, but not required, to participate in the Nutcracker season and the Children’s Dance Recital.

SENIOR COMPANY DIVISION (BALLET III & IV): Classes at this level emphasize commitment, discipline, and focus, helping students develop technically and artistically, and requiring routine training. Choreography is influenced by each dancer’s unique talents and is a tool used to help dancers grow as artists. Frequent absence at this level can hurt a dancer’s progress, lower morale of the group, and increase the risk of injury; attending classes and rehearsals is vital. Senior Division dancers are invited, but not required, to participate in the Nutcracker season and the Spring Dance Concert.

Changing the Script: A Teen Script-Writing Camp with Kassie Rice for ages 13-17

$127 camp fee, $15 materials Calling theatrical teens! Join us as we explore different types of scripts and their uses, as well as write and share our own. This is the perfect camp for storytellers and aspiring authors.

K-3 Art Camp for grades K-3

Art Camp balances technical instruction with freedom of self-expression. The Kids’ Cafe with Kassie Rice for ages 6-11

The Kids’ Cafe is an opportunity for kids to bring their imagination to life. In this camp we’ll teach kids what menus are and how one is created, show them the basics of kitchen safety and cooking, and help them create their own recipes to share with friends and family. On the last day of camp we’ll host an invitation only Kids’ Cafe for the students’ families, that way the kids can show off their new skills. Due to the timing of this camp, lunch will be provided.

Imagination Drama Camp for ages 3-6

Fairy Tale Prince & Princess Dance Camp

Have a simply magical time learning to dance in our Fairytale themed dance camp! Students will explore movement and music inspired by popular fairytales while learning basic dance vocabulary and engaging in imaginative play. Dance games, activities, crafts, and choreography will bring their favorite prince or princess to life. Students will walk perform on the last day of class, donning their very own crowns and capes to keep!

4-8th Grade Art Camp for grades 4-8 with Nancy Nelson-Brotz June 22-26 , Mon-Fri 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

In this program, you’ll learn how to take your artistic skills to the next level. You’ll spend four hours per day doing what you love most: making art. Our instructors will teach you techniques to make your art even better and help you hone your creative vision in an encouraging, hands-on environment. Multiarts Camp: Go Fish!

3 weeks beginning June 29, Mon-Fri, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. for grades 1-6

Kids will learn about music, theater, visual arts, and dance in this three-week camp that culminates in a performance of a mini musical, Go Fish!, for family and friends in Straw

Summer Arts Camps

Hat Theatre on Friday, July 17 at 10 a.m. This is a great beginning experience for kids who have never performed before (returning performers are also very welcome!), or who want to “test drive” different art activities to see what they enjoy the most! Students should bring water and a packed lunch each day, and will need to bring a white cotton t-shirt to tie dye for the performance (Miss Nancy, the visual arts teacher, will let you know when they need to bring shirts to camp.) Students will be painting costume and set pieces, so clothing and shoes for camp should be messfriendly!

Broadway Bound! for ages 12-15

Lights, camera… STAGE TIME! In this high-energy camp, young performers will explore musical theatre through acting games, voice work, and dance numbers from popular Broadway shows. Campers will build confidence, stage presence, and teamwork while preparing a mini musical revue to share with friends and family at 3:30pm on the final day out on our lawn!

Improv Explosion! for ages 12-15

Get ready to think fast and laugh hard! This week is all about improvisation— where no scripts are needed and the fun never stops. Through classic improv games and wacky character challenges, kids will sharpen

their creative thinking and teamwork skills.

Circus Camp Stars for ages 8–14 with Michael Rosman July 20-24

Step right up and experience the thrill of the circus! In this exciting camp, you’ll learn the incredible skills of circus performers—walk on stilts, master the tight wire, and discover the art of juggling. Dive into a noncompetitive environment that blends physical activity with cultural arts while embracing the spirit of the Big Top—building towards a big Friday afternoon show for parents. Activities include acrobatics, physical comedy/ clowning, stilt walking, tightwire walking, juggling, plate spinning, pie-in-the-face day, and various other circus experiences. You’ll have fun and improve your handeye coordination, balance, and self-confidence. Dress comfortably in sneakers and activewear as you embark on this unforgettable journey! Michael Rosman has more than 30 years experience as a circus coach and more than 35 years experience as a full time comedy circus performer. He will be returning to Ohio this summer for a 7 weekend run at the Great Lakes Medieval Festival where he is a known as Squire of the Wire. His act there features tight wire walking directly over the audience along with other traditional and non traditional circus stunts. Over the course of his long

career, he has headlined on cruise ships, at casinos, and at theaters, as well as at more than 100 colleges and universities. He has done stage shows in such exotic places as Japan, Sri Lanka, Aruba, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and a few others. In the USA, he has been to 49 states, and performed in almost all of them including Alaska and Hawaii.

Pop Star Camp for ages 7-11 with Sadie Drozd July 20-24

During this one-week camp, students will learn vocals and choreography for 2 or more current pop favorites. The students will be able to sing, dance, and have a blast while showing off their inner divas! The week will include a photo shoot, dress up day, and crafts. There will be a culminating performance on Friday, July 24th at noon on the lawn of the Arts Center’s Straw Hat Theatre. Bring your lawn chairs, snacks, and picnic blankets and enjoy the campers’ time to shine!

Fiber Arts Camp for grades 6-12 with Nancy Nelson-Brotz Aug 12-14, Wed-Fri

$75 camp fee, $20 materials We will explore fiber arts including needle felting, dyeing, weaving, and more. Dress for a mess! There will also be an opportunity to custom-dye your own clothes if you bring them from home. Bring a bottle of water and a snack.

This is a beginner class as well as a studio class for experienced potters. This class will cover handbuilding, sculpture, and wheel throwing. Demonstration and support will be given for each technique. You are welcome to come with projects in mind and a willingness to learn and get messy.

Woodcarving: Natural Elements for teens/adults with Ralph Bacon

This class will focus on producing projects inspired by nature. We'll go over carving basics, tips and tricks, wood sources, themes, and a bit of the history of the art form. We will be using carving knives and palm chisels on cottonwood bark. Select poplar branches will also be an option.

Weather permitting, we will be painting outdoors. This class will explore perspective, tone, contrast, texture, atmospheric perspective and composition. It will rely heavily upon Plein Aire techniques, so think trees, fields, streams, and lakes, with occasional manmade structures. We'll be working in acrylics.

Blackwork is a form of counted-thread embroidery that traditionally uses black silk thread on white or offwhite linen, characterized by geometric, floral, or abstract

patterns often created with a double running (Holbein) stitch. Popularized in 16thcentury England (often called "Spanish work" or "poor man's lace"), it is used for reversible decoration on clothing cuffs, collars, and modern decorative pieces.

Raku is a low-fire process, reaching around 1830F (1000C) at its highest temperature. Pottery is removed from the kiln when red hot, then cooled rapidly, often in combustible material like sawdust or paper. Raku firing is usually done in a fuel-burning kiln, rather than electric.

All the colors of the rainbow will be on display in our June 2026 juried exhibit. Artwork will highlight one of the 7 colors of the rainbow and will be installed by color category, creating a spectrum across the gallery. Each artwork submitted should feature a specific color.

Above Below Through & Beyond: The Hidden Nature of Nature

Joan Pogalies on display in July public reception: July 11, 6-8 p.m.

Joan Pogalies rearranges original photographic images: she crops, enlarges, stacks, flips them from montages documenting local scenes into unrecognizable configurations. These are printed using the dye sublimation technique that heat-infuses pigments into the surface of metal panels up to 4ft x 5ft. For decades, she experimented with (and still produces) traditional photographs before yearning to push through the single moments of her individual images to create deeper stories and vast visual narratives. Thus, she taught herself to reimagine reality. She continues to push, push, push her photos into and through those other dimensions! Her art has been in shows at University Hospitals (Geauga), Kendal at Oberlin Art Gallery/Friends Gallery, Stella’s Art Gallery, Tri-C East, Photo Cleveland, Ashtabula Arts Center, The Art Gallery, Understory Gallery, and is in private collections.

Select, glaze, and fire your own pot on-site under the sky in this fun hands-on experience! Raku pots are heated rapidly in small outdoor kilns, then removed while red-hot and placed into containers with combustible materials such as sawdust or leaves, creating unique, unpredictable smoky patterns and colors. Don your best blue button-down shirt and grab your yellow ochre paint for an homage party to painter Bob Ross! Think curly hair, canvases, and happy little trees, and you've got the makings of an epic painting party that will stretch your creative skills and have you giggling for hours. We'll be following along with Bob (with some in-person guidance from Nancy Nelson-Brotz) and creating our own mellow masterpieces — though we'll be working in acrylic instead of oil for faster drying. All art supplies will be provided, as will light refreshments. There will be an award for the best Bob Ross costume!
