SEVENTY FIVE YEARS OF

shorthorn heritage

In 1951 Hugh W. Moore Sr. and Hugh W. Moore Jr. started registering purebred Shorthorn cattle with the MM prefix in Jerseyville, IL. That humble beginning has sparked five generations of the Moore family raising and showing Shorthorn cattle. What started out as Hugh Moore Sr. & Son, evolved to Hugh Moore Jr. & Sons and eventually landed at Moore Shorthorns. It has always been our mission to provide “Quality In Every Weigh” with cattle that excel in the show ring and the pasture.

We know we haven’t had a production sale in a long time, but we felt such a milestone required to be celebrated, especially while Hugh Jr. and June are still here to enjoy. We have dug deep into the heart of the herd to share cow families that have built this herd and continue to build it. Some of these genetic lines have been going strong since the 80s and 90s and some are just starting to make a strong impact that we hope will last for decades.

Family has always been at the heart of our operation.

Being part of the Moore family also means loving the red, white and roan. Almost every member of all five generations has graced a show ring once or twice, helped at a production sale, or held a leadership role within the Shorthorn breed. In 1986 Hugh Jr., Tom, and Ron were named Builder of the Breed. June, Lori, and Sandy all served state and national offices for the Shorthorn Lassies. June was a past National Lassie of the Year. Ron served on the ASA National Board of Directors for 6 years and Emily served on the AJSA Board of Directors and as President. They hosted the World Shorthorn Tour in 2004 and have hosted many Australian ambassadors through the exchange program. In 2021 the Moore Family was the Show Honoree at the North American International Livestock Exposition and they were honored with the 2025 Illinois Beef Association Farm Family of the Year title. Hugh Jr. & June, Tom and Sandy, and Ron and Lori have all been inducted into the IL 4-H Hall of Fame and the Moore Family was recognized as an IL Friend of 4-H recently.

We thank all of you that have had an impact on our program over these 75 years. We will be thinking of those no longer with us, and we look forward to working with and meeting new families.

All shipping expenses will be covered by the buyer, but every effort will be made by the sellers to assist you with coordinating trucks and rides, should you need assistance.

PHONE BIDS

Telephone bids will be handled in a most confidential manner. If you are unable to attend the sale personally, simply contact a representative of the sale far enough in advance prior to sale day. They will also be able to assist you at ringside on sale day.

TERMS & CONDITIONS

Terms of the sale are cash or check payable to Hugh Moore Jr. & Sons. Settlement is to be made with the clerk immediately following the sale and before the cattle are removed from the premises. Purchasers or their representatives must sign the bill of sale prior to leaving the sale site.

BILLED ACCOUNTS

All billed accounts are due within 10 days following the date of the sale.

REGISTRATION & TRANSFER

All animals sell with completed pedigrees or applications for registration in the hands of the sale manager.

LIABILITY

Each animal selling will be at the buyer’s risk as soon as sold, but will be cared for by the sellers for a reasonable amount of time. Neither the owners, employees, auctioneer, sale manager, or other affiliated personnel can be held responsible for any accidents, but will make every effort to provide for the safety and comfort of those attending.

HEALTH

Each animal selling will have a state approved health certificate for interstate shipment. Buyers should make themselves aware of the health requirement for the respective states.

BREEDING GUARANTEE

All cattle sell under the Standard Breeding Guarantee recommended by the American Shorthorn Association. An exception would be through mishandling either obesity or under nourishment and illegal practices associated with showing the female.

FLUSH RIGHTS

Moore Shorthorns reserves the right to one flush of eight or more grade 1 or 2 embryos at our expense on all females selling. Flush to take place at the convenience of the buyer at a location of their choice.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Complete results on all genetic conditions should be done by sale day and will be provided on an added sheet. There will also be added information available at the sale site that will list any additions to the catalog information including new calves born and new breeding information that will occur after the printing of this catalog. Announcements made from the auction block take precedence over all printed material in this catalog.

Look in, look in. As we return back to the open heifers of the sale we come out of the gates swinging. This gal is a horse and a fan favorite of the barn help. She’s bold, big middled and up headed. We have sold several Proud Fool sibs in past onlines sales, one that did a lot of winning for the Cover Family a few years back. I am going to sound like a broken record for the next several lots, but Diamond Dreams is based around these Dreams to Reality heifers making dreams come true for a lot of families in the future.

For those that like Shorthorn history the Butterfly cow family stems from the Sangamon herd that we bought in the 90s. This Dreams to Reality daughter is still really green but has the structure, flex and length that when it all matures should make a great cow prospect.

Big hair and big look from this April heifer. We acquired the Star Rose family from Bowman Superior Genetics in a past sale and that line goes back to the infamous Ka’Ba Rose T90. If you have been anywhere around our program since the 90s, then you know Mary Kaye goes hand in hand with the MM prefix. Our Mary Kaye daughters are starting to dwindle so we are only offering one in this sale, but she represents the cow family just fine on her own. Her Dream Maker dam is starting to leave a big ripple in our herd and we have retained her first two daughters. This is the last open we pictured on picture day 3 and she kept motivation up through the end. This one gets me excited and I know she will look even better on Sept. 6.

Another cow family that we owe thanks to Del Patty for are the Amanda Maids. They stem from the Diamond Shorthorns herd in Canada. Amanda Maids have had an impact since the 90s and Emily showed several of them through the years. This Dream Maker cow is a looker and has a fancy Peace Keeper daughter at her side. This is a investment that will reap rewards for your herd.

I, Emily, am not around this cow herd and don’t know the cows as well as I did at one time, but when this broody gal hit the picture pen I knew exactly which cow family she belonged to because she reminded me of a certain show heifer with a “special attitude” from this same genetic line.
