A LETTER FROM DR. JEFF GOWER

Dear Friends and Cattlemen,

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all past and present buyers who have supported Soaring Eagle of the Ozarks genetics. Your trust and confidence in our program has allowed us to continue advancing the Angus breed with integrity and purpose.

We are especially grateful to those who have embraced the Promogen™ selection criteria. By prioritizing superior immunity, reproductive efficiency, and balanced EPDs, you have joined us in building cattle that thrive in real-world conditions while delivering measurable results for your herd.

Breeding superior genetics is never the product of chance, but of unwavering focus and commitment. This dedication is evident in the sires we proudly feature throughout our herd, such as Ultra Provider, Ambitious, Beal Breakthrough, Captain – all 6.5 Promogen sires – and others represented in this sale book. Each reflects years of disciplined breeding decisions aimed at creating cattle that perform in the pasture, in the feedlot, and on the balance sheet.

Thank you again for your support and belief in our mission. Together, we are shaping the future of Angus genetics for the better.

With gratitude,

Dr. Jeff Gower

Soaring Eagle of the Ozarks

what is promogen™ genetic evaluation?

Promogen™ genetic evaluation is another method for establishing genomic probabilities. The purpose of the test is to identify and quantify, using a simple numerical scoring system, the presence of three key proteins that medical science has labeled collectively “Defensins.” A twenty-year research project involving several universities in the United States and Europe has proven that physiologic performance, whether it is measured as disease resistance, fertility, productivity, or athletic ability, are directly related to the concentration of these proteins in the body.

what is promogen™ important?

It provides a “road map” for developing management strategies that maximize herd profitability.

It helps you identify animals who are most likely naturally inclined to herd longevity, reproductive efficiency, and naturally able to maximize environment and express Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) to the best of thier ability.

Allows for early identification of animals that may prove to incure more input costs than their counterparts.

how does promogen™ equate to profitability?

Genetic progress in beef cattle comes with challenges. The major issue is industry segmentation. Utilizing the Promogen™ assay can add value throughout the production cycle. The ideal cow for a cow/calf operation is one that successfully weans a feedlotready calf at six to seven months of age and does so with minimum added expense associated with feed supplementation, medication, and labor. At the same time, that cow is expected to breed back within 40 to 90 days post-calving to repeat the cycle; she is expected to do this year after year. Promogen™ assays will predict value-added cows that will raise healthy calves.

Then there is the challenge of sire selection. Current EPDs, even when supported by genomics testing, can become little more than a good guess with so many traits being selected simultaneously. Promogen™ testing accurrately identifies bulls who are more feed efficient, more disease resistant, more fertile and appear to be able to pass the ability to produce high levels of Defensins and their associated proteins to their offspring.

promogen scoring

1. The system uses a numerical score of 1 to 6.5.

2. Animals with scores of less than 4 are not producing the three marker proteins we are measuring at physiologically effective levels.

3. Animals between 4 to 4.5 are producing the three marker proteins at levels that are physiologically average.

4. Animals scoring between 4.5 and 5.0 are in the Top 15% of the tested populations.

5. Animals scoring between 5.0 and 5.5 are within the Top 10%.

6. Animals scoring between 5.5 to 6.0 are within the Top 5%.

7. The outliers lie within the range of 6.0 to 6.5, and find themselves within the Top 1% of the tested population.

> Immunologically superior animals are proven to return higher significant gains across all traits: overall wellness, fertlility, and feed efficiency.

> Profits on overall wellness are realized through an increased response to vaccinces and antiparasitic treatments, drastically reducing the incidence of morbidity and antibiotic use.

> Fertility is reflected in higher conception rates, reduced risk in early embryonic death, weaning calves at higher weight ratios, and overall retention and longevity in replacement females.

> Feed efficiency is directly affected by the body’s ability to ward off inflammation due to environmental stress factors.

> Cattle on feed who possess this natural ability have higher conversion rates than their counterparts who are immunologically inferior - all without commanding additional medicine costs and higher overall expenses.

> Immunologically superior animals who possess specific Defensin predictive biomarkers are proven to be more profitable and aid in economic gains through these highly heritable traits for generations to follow.

THE P S INDEX &

THE PROFITABLE AND SUSTAINABLE INDEX

Promogen measures the concentration of three previously unknown proteins that are indicators of an individual’s metabolic efficiency. The greater the concentration of these proteins, the more energy is available at the cell level. In beef cattle, cellular energy concentrations positively impact every bodily function, from feed and reproductive efficiency to disease resistance and even carcass quality. Promogen testing accurately identifies those individuals that are inherently more feed efficient, more disease resistant and most likely to economically produce a high-quality consumer acceptable product. Promogen testing has only been available for industry use in the last 4 years or so, and it is already making a positive impact, but the research has continued as to how to make its application even better. One outcome of this effort is the development and introduction of the Promogen Profitable and Sustainable Index, P$S for short.

what is the p&s index?

The P&S Index was developed as a tool to enhance field applications of the Promogen technology. Promogen measures the concentration of three proteins that are indicators of metabolic efficiency. These proteins are biomarkers for mitochondrial DNA activity, the primary source of cellular energy and its utilization. Unlike nuclear DNA, which is inherited from both the sire and dam, the dam is the only source for mitochondrial DNA . Researchers at Anova BioSciences developed an algorithm that predicts the rate of transmissibility of this metabolic efficiency, through analysis of multigenerational maternal inheritance.

1) The P&S Index indicates the efficiency of utilization of the mitochondrial derived cellular energy.

2) The P&S Index indicates the consistency of generational transfer of this ability.

3) The P&S Index predicts the likelihood that the metabolic efficiency of the dam and/or sire, as measured by Promogen, will be inherited in the offspring.

4) The P&S Index of a bull, heifer, or cow (depending on the score) indicates his/her ability to improve the metabolic efficiency of his/her gut.

5) The combined P&S Index of a planned mating is strongly predictive of the metabolic efficiency that is the result of that mating.

6) The P&S Index is based upon assessment of multigenerational maternal histories and the relationship between the three Promogen proteins and certain hormones.

how does it work?

1) A P&S Index of less than 500 indicates an average rate of transmittance.

2) A P&S Index above 500 reflects the consistency of that inheritance through maternal lines. It indicates the genetic importance of a cow family.

3) The higher the P&S Index, of an individual or planned mating, the less variance in metabolic response.
