Living with alopecia: ‘ anyone to define norm

Living with alopecia, has meant Emily Begg has dealt with a raft of bullying and self-confidence issues, but she doesn’t for a moment want you to feel sorry for her. She is now a senior hairstylist, dedicated to making other women feel beautiful and confident in their own skin. YOU writer Megan Gnad spoke to an inspirational young lady who is finding a way to turn life’s challenges into lessons, by spreading a message of hope and empowerment in her community.

‘Who is mal?’

YOU Magazine | 5

From start to finish, Emily Begg’s day job is fully immersed in everything related to the world of hair. If you’re after a cut or a colour; a trim or a new ‘do’, she’s the person you want to be in control of the scissors, the hair dye and the straightening irons. Yet, as her clients sit in the hairdresser’s chair and allow her to work her magic, many have absolutely no idea of the inner struggle the 25-year-old senior stylist has had in coming to terms with her own hair loss. Born with beautiful jet black hair, she was barely two when her tiny, delicate eyelashes and eyebrows began to fall out. As time went on, the hair on her head became patchy and also came out in parts. The diagnosis was alopecia areata. It involves one or more round bald patches that appear suddenly, most often on the scalp, and is also called autoimmune alopecia. With no memory of those early days, her parents have filled in the blanks, but chose not to dwell on the condition so Emily could live without feeling different to any of her peers. “We had this motto ‘no victims’ – my parents even had t-shirts made,” she said. “Because I was such a young age, I’ve grown up with it, it’s my normal and who is anyone to define normal?” Raised with an emphasis on positive self-belief and an attitude to be grateful because there were always others worse off, meant a young Emily breezed through her early schooling. She attended Netherby School, where her mum worked as a teacher aid and with a “good wee group of friends” her hair was barely an issue. Sure, there were times it fell out and grew back again, on and off, but she fitted in and felt no different to her friends. Secondary education changed all of that. When the bullying started, it was cruel and cemented self-esteem issues that have followed her through her life. Emily may wear a wig on a daily basis, but, living with alopecia, she says she’s just as comfortable without it. 280317-RH-054

From P5 “I consider myself lucky because I didn’t have to experience cyber-bullying,” she explains. “One day one girl came and ripped a piece of my hair out and pushed it in my face. “I was called baldie and made fun of for having cancer and they automatically assumed I did have cancer.” Her one wish was that people would ask sensible and empathetic questions, rather than make uncalled-for assumptions. When the bullying became too much to bear, her mum and dad – constant champions fighting in her corner – took her to Christchurch to purchase her first wig. “I never really wore wigs before, running around at school wasn’t really good for them,” she said. “It was difficult, I never felt I was pretty enough and everything was really hard. It was not a nice time, but I was lucky with my friends and I tried to not let it get to me.” Again, her parents stepped in to offer words of wisdom and nuggets of truth to get her through the tough times. “My parents said: You’re not sick, there are people worse off, so be loud and proud and be out there,” she said. “Now every day I look in the mirror and think how lucky I am, because I’m not sick, I just don’t have any hair. “They didn’t make a big deal of it, so I didn’t make a big deal of it.” Despite her ongoing struggle with her hair and self-image, there was one constant throughout Emily’s life. She had a passion and obsession with hairdressing. From her fascination with hair salons as a little girl and creating styles for Barbies, to being the family-appointed stylist when it came time for school balls and ironing her sister’s hair before a night out, she had discovered her passion. But, as she grew older and endured the taunts and jibes associated with her alopecia, her drive to work in the beauty industry took on a different force. Her interest in working with hair stemmed from a deep desire to help women feel beautiful and that everyone deserves the chance to walk out of a salon feeling a million dollars.

Emily as a young girl when her hair became patchy and would fall out. The support of positive, loving and encouraging parents taught her to “be loud and proud and be out there” and never feel sorry for herself.

Now working as a senior hairstylist at Shear Dimensions Hairdressing, Emily’s passionate about making sure her clients leave the salon feeling confident and proud.

“With the bullying, because of my hair, I thought, ‘I would hate for someone else to feel that way. I could help’,” she said. “I knew how I was feeling about it, so I would hate for someone else to feel the same way.” A family friend who was doing her training apprenticeship reignited the fire and when she noticed an advertisement for staff required at the Netherby hair salon, with the possibility of it leading to an apprenticeship, she jumped at the chance to apply. Unfortunately, she missed out, but the company kept her number on record, and a year later called and asked if she could come in and start straight away. Emily began her apprenticeship in 2008, when she was about 17, and discovered her calling.

She was working in an industry she was passionate about, understood and could focus her dedication and drive into boosting confidence and making clients feel good about themselves. Yet, she kept her own issues relatively private. Now, with access to a government subsidy, she was able to purchase stunning wigs that meant no-one could ever tell it wasn’t her natural hair. This was partly because she didn’t feel the need to draw attention to it. Partly because it was so normal she never gave it a second thought. Her apprenticeship finished in 2011 and the following year she moved to Melbourne to experience living abroad for three years. During this time, an opportunity came

to work with world educator, Lorna Evans, a significant name within the Australian and international hairdressing industry. “Lorna was just amazing, she was just cool,” Emily said of her time under Lorna’s tutelage. It was while living in Australia that she began to come to grips with the condition and look to support others dealing with similar struggles. “There was a client’s family member who had alopecia and I told her about my story,” she said. “She was in her 30s and it was sudden, she really struggling with it. “I sat with her for an hour and chatted with her about my experiences. continued over page

FACTS AND FIGURES

Now a confident young woman, Emily hopes that by speaking out, she can create understanding in her local community and raise awareness for people living with alopecia. 280317-RH-521

From P7 “I never saw her again, but I do think of her often.” It was also while living in Australia that her condition worsened. Emily’s alopecia is genetic and she initially had the most common version of areata. However, for a low percentage of people it can turn into totalis, which she developed a few years ago. This affects up to 5 per cent of patients with auto-immune hair loss and results in the loss of all, or nearly all, scalp hair. “The longest it got was just below my ears, it was fine and almost non-existent,” she said. Before she could get too established in Australian life, opportunity back in New Zealand came knocking when partner Brad was offered a job in Cromwell. Emily was asked to come back to Ashburton and returned to the same studio, now operating as Shear Dimensions Hairdressing in Netherby, where she has blossomed. Her passion for hairdressing is palpable. “Stereotypes about hairdressers make me so angry,” she says. “We stand on our feet all day and, if you don’t get it right … you’re expected to be a magician and it’s high pressure and high stress. “There are days I think ‘why am I doing this’?

Ministry of Health statistics on the wig benefit: The last few years have seen the following number of people access the wig subsidy: 2013/14 – 4259 2014/15 – 3913 2015/16 – 4334 (These numbers can include temporary hair loss and cancer treatment so there is no definitive alopecia number) – Alopecia areata is a hair-loss condition which usually affects the scalp and causes one or more patches of hair loss – Alopecia areata affects both genders and all ages – It is an autoimmune disorder, in which the immune system attacks hair follicles – Alopecia is linked to other auto-immune disorders – A number of treatments are known to aid in hair regrowth. Multiple treatments may be necessary and none consistently work for all patients – Many treatments are promoted which have not proven to be of benefit Information supplied by www.alopecianz.co.nz While www.alopecianz.co.nz cannot provide answers or cures, they work to support anyone with the condition (or their supporters).

“Then one day I had one client who was very sceptical and she cried when I finished. She said, ‘you have no idea what it means to me’. “I can relate a lot when clients talk about their hair and how much trouble it causes them; their hair is relevant to them.” And that is why, for Emily, it’s all worth it. Those miraculous moments where someone feels special in their own skin, empowered and beautiful. She’s also come to a point in her own life, where she embraces her condition and – while she of course has her down days – it doesn’t control her life and how she views herself. She marries her partner next year and she couldn’t be happier. “It’s never bothered my fiancé, Brad. I’m really, really lucky,” she said. She doesn’t consider herself brave. Although we do. Her story is inspirational and powerful, yet Emily’s one wish is that people don’t feel sorry for her. “There’s nothing to feel sorry for,” she said. “The biggest misconception is people say ‘poor you’, but I’m healthy, I have a roof over my head … some days I think poor me, but you get over it. “I used to feel sorry for the bullies be-

cause they had to put someone else down so badly to make themselves feel better. That’s sad. “But, I’m a believer in things happening for a reason and I feel like my reason is I’m strong enough to have it and make a difference.” The way she hopes to make that difference is through awareness and discussion around alopecia and what it means for the New Zealanders who experience it. “No-one really knows about it,” she said. “It’s slowly getting out there and losing the perception that people need to feel sorry for me.” The upbeat young woman follows a number of individuals with alopecia who have taken to social media to spread the word – one in particular is a model who speaks out to create awareness – and Emily admires their courage. After spending time in Emily’s company, you walk away feeling inspired and uplifted. Positive and empowered. And that’s what she hopes to impart on each and every client she works with. Emily Begg is bold, fearless, courageous and brave – exactly what she wants every woman to have the chance to experience. “I feel as comfortable in my wig as I do without it,” she said. “If I can raise some awareness in my own community, hopefully it will spread out.”

Donna-Marie gets to grips with goats FARMY PRINCESS with DONNA-MARIE LEVER

In my ongoing quest for farming greatness, I thought it was time to add a new skill to my small collection. Still embedded in me from city life is the need to spend a small fortune on beauty products, soaps, shampoos, moisturisers, creams … the list goes on. But with “natural” and “organic” now the big thing, I seized the opportunity to learn to make my own – at a goat farm! I very eagerly signed up for the soap-making workshop and tore off in a northerly direction to the farm. My GPS must have been in sleep mode and it’s not like I got lost, but I ended up a bit late from taking the scenic route. The lovely tutor could clearly see my stress and kindly made me a coffee. I inhaled it and although it tasted a little unusual it was a welcome treat. She was quick to tell our class of the health benefits of raw goats’ milk, at which point I realised I’d just had my first goats’ milk latte. This would actually take off in Auckland – they’d love it! As we learned about the science behind soap, it became time to try our hand at the craft. First though the tutor explained “we need to catch the goat and milk it …” Whaaaaaaaaat????! When the ad for the course explained all ingredients were

included in the cost, it never actually crossed my mind I would need to extract some of them from a live animal. Goats were new to me; this was extremely uncertain territory. Thinking back to my childhood and the Billy Goats Gruff book I’m pretty sure they had twisty, pointy horns. Ah yes, they do. Lucky for us she did the catching and then demonstrated the milking bit. Unfortunately I giggle a bit when I’m nervous and must have had a smirk on my face, so I got picked first to milk. Slightly panicked, I grabbed the teat, which was surprisingly hot and tried to

copy what I’d just seen. Needless to say nothing came out. But after several attempts I managed to extract my two cups of milk. It ended up being a good honest day’s work making soap and in just a few weeks it will be ready to use; but I’m not sure I will ever be able to get the image of curly-horned Lucy out of my head in the shower. Experience Melbourne Discovering Melbourne’s eclectic precincts and fringe suburbs is fun and very easy as we discovered on a weekend away just recently. A packed agenda of food, wine, sports, concerts, shows and shopping awaits you in this amazing city. Arriving at Melbourne airport you can jump on the SkyBus and within 25 to 30 minutes you are at Central Station. The city has a visitor friendly public transport system that is super easy to use whether it’s a train, tram or bus. A whole world of events awaits you in Melbourne. While there Adele was in town, at Ethiad Stadium, it was an amazing feeling to be amongst 77,300 people all attending the same incredible show. We found our way out to Hawthorn on the train to watch our daughter compete for New Zealand in the Australian Open Weightlifting Competition. Hawthorn is an inner suburb just 10 minutes out of the city on the train with great restaurants and cafes. The suburbs are all within easy reach and are great to explore.

Unwanted hair can be embarrassing for people, knocking self-esteem and confidence, therefore when we successfully treat client’s hair concerns it can be truly life changing.

Electrolysis is the longest established method of safe and permanent hair removal. A fine probe is used in the hair follicle and treated with a small amount of energy (current) which produces a chemical and/or heat reaction to destroy the hair growth cells at the base of the hair, preventing a hair growing from that follicle again. All hair types and skin types are able to be treated with electrolysis and most of the body and face can be treated by electrolysis. This includes the eyebrows, upper and lower lip, sides of face, chin and jawline, neck, breasts, armpits, bikini, back and shoulders, legs and arms, however smaller areas maybe better suited to electrolysis depending on the extent of hair to be treated. With the introduction and more widely available access to IPL and Laser clients may

not be sure which modality is suited to them. Whether you are considering electrolysis, IPL or Laser an extensive consultation HAIR FOLLICLE with your therapist is necessary to establish the best treatment for the hair type, skin type, area/s, and reason for hair growth. You will expect to answer questions about your current and previous health and medical history, medications, previous skin/hair therapies/treatments in salon or clinic and skin care used at home, genetic history and lifestyle. This may seem like a lot of information which of course is confidential and is important to help your therapist to better understand you, your history and your goals. In a nutshell, electrolysis is an effective treatment in most instances for the reduction and permanent removal of unwanted (superfluous) hair. Advertising feature

LED facials

Many of us swear by facials to make our skin look radiant, but now there has been a shift in the demand for facials that pack more punch, and this is what LED facials provide.

LED red light therapy is the new answer to non-invasive skin rejuvenation, anti ageing and sun damage.

What is it?

Ashburton

Red light therapy uses infra-red light to penetrate skin and repair damaged nerves and tissues. The concentrated LED light is absorbed by the skin cells which stimulates the generation of more collagen; the building block of the skin structure.

So what is involved? The treatment is 20 minutes and you feel like you are lying on the beach. However there is only positive effects.

For best results We recommend doing two treatments a week for four weeks, then break for a month. Then repeat the course. For the ultimate lunch time pick me up or party skin prep would be one twenty minute session.

IPL – Now available only in Ashburton at Life Pharmacy Phone 03 308 7222 262 East Street Ashburton

What is IPL you may be thinking? IPL stands for “Intense Pulsed Light” IPL is a flash lamp therapy

using high intensity pulses of visible light to improve the appearance of the following skin problems; 1. Spider Veins, Rosy Cheeks, Rosacea 2. Freckles and Age spots 3. Facial Lines and Wrinkles 4. Hair Removal IPL systems work on the same principles as lasers in that light energy is absorbed into particular target cells with colour in the skin, however IPL targets the lower layers of the skin (dermis) without affecting the top layer of the skin (epidermis) Therefore the advantage of IPL over laser treatment is there is no downtime, so a patient can have a treatment and carry on with their daily routine. IPL can be unsuitable for some people, particularly if on certain medication and some heart conditions Advertising feature

The ageing face – what can you do? Nearly every woman recalls vividly the first time she looked in a mirror and noticed a line at the corner of her mouth or near her eyes. No matter how self-assured or determined she was not to allow the external signs of beauty to control her life, she very likely felt a pang at the sight of that first wrinkle. Men often have the same reaction when they realise their hairline is slowly receding or bags are developing under their eyes. While the ageing process itself cannot be changed, facial aesthetic treatments can reverse some of its effects. Cosmetic treatments are not as daunting as they were 30 years ago, surgery is not necessarily needed, as non-surgical facial aesthetic treatments are successful and affordable. At Transform Clinic we see the best results for clients who tend to have treatments – “a little and often” – regular botulinum treatments, a good skincare regime, using stimulant skin products daily, a little dermal filler regularly and light treatments if necessary. ’s time for Easter is fast approaching, so with that in mind I have included a great light easy Easter muffin recipe. The Thai pumpkin soup is one of my all-time favourites and you can add extra curry paste to spice it up.

The orange and almond cake is a great winter treat and can also be used as a dairy-free option. With the compliments of qualified chef and baker Sarah Kingsbury

Easter muffins

450g strong white bread flour 1/2 t salt 50g butter, cut into pieces 7g sachet easy-blend dried yeast 2t ground mixed spice 2t ground cinnamon 50g golden caster sugar Finely grated zest 1 lemon 275ml milk, plus extra to glaze 2 eggs, beaten 200g mixed dried fruit, cherries halved For the crosses and glaze 2t plain flour Golden syrup, to glaze

– Put all dough ingredients, except the dried fruit, in the bread maker, following the order in your manual. Set to dough programme. – Once the dough is ready, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and punch down to deflate. Pat into a large flat circle, tip the fruit in the centre and enclose with the dough. Knead the fruit in, cutting through the mixture with a sharp knife, then re-knead a few times to distribute the fruit evenly. – Cut out about nine squares of baking paper and have ready a 12-hole muffin tin. Cut the dough into 9 even-sized pieces and roll each into a smooth ball. Push a square of the paper into a tin hole and drop in a ball of dough. Repeat with the rest. Cover the tin loosely with lightly-oiled cling film and leave in a warm place for 30-45 minutes or until doubled in size. Preheat oven to fan, 180 degrees. – For the crosses, blend the flour to a smooth paste with 5-6t of cold water. Spoon into a small plastic food bag and cut a small hole off one corner or use a piping bag. Pipe crosses on the buns. – Bake for 15 minutes or until golden. Cool on a cooling rack. Brush with a little golden syrup while warm.

Drain again, and then fill the saucepan with fresh water for the third time and bring to the boil again. – Add cinnamon stick and star anise. Let saucepan simmer gently (not boil) for approx 35 minutes or until the rind is soft enough to be pierced easily with a fork. – Beat the sugar, eggs, vanilla and oil in a large mixing bowl until thick and smooth. Add the orange puree and stir to combine. – Add dry ingredients (don’t whisk or beat) until well combined. Pour the mixture into tin. – Place in a preheated oven of 170°C and bake for about 70 minutes or until skewer comes out clean. Butter or margarine? One of them is deadly Saturated fat found in butter, meat or cream is unlikely to kill you, but margarine just might, new research suggests. Although traditionally dieticians have advised people to cut down on animal fats, the biggest ever study has shown that it does not increase the risk of stroke, heart disease or diabetes. However, trans-fats, found in processed foods like margarine raises the risk of death by 34 per cent. “For years everyone has been advised to cut out fats,” said study lead author Doctor Russell de Souza, an assistant professor in the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, at McMaster University in Canada. “Trans-fats have no health benefits and pose a significant risk for heart disease, but the case for saturated fat is less clear. “That said, we aren’t advocating an increase of the allowance for saturated fats in dietary guidelines, as we don’t see evidence that higher limits would be specifically beneficial to health.” Saturated fats come mainly from

animal products, such as butter, cows’ milk, meat, salmon and egg yolks, and some plant products such as chocolate and palm oils. In contrast trans-unsaturated fats or trans-fats are mainly produced industrially from plant oils for use in margarine, snack foods and packaged baked goods. Guidelines currently recommend that saturated fats are limited to less than 10 per cent, and trans-fats to less than 1 per cent of energy, to reduce risk of heart disease and stroke. Last year leading heart scientist Dr James DiNicolantonio of Ithica College, New York, called for health guidelines on saturated fats to be changed in an article in the British Medical Journal. The “vilification” of saturated fats dates back to the 1950s when research suggested a link between high dietary saturated fat intake and deaths from heart disease. But the study

author drew his conclusions on data from six countries, choosing to ignore the data from a further 16, which did not fit with his hypothesis. Nevertheless the research stuck and since the 1970s most public health organisations have advised people to cut down on fat. However, the new research found no clear association between higher intake of saturated fats and death for any reason, coronary heart disease, cardiovascular disease, ischemic stroke or type 2 diabetes. In contrast, consumption of industrial trans-fats was associated with a 34 per cent increase in death, a 28 per cent increased risk of death from coronary heart disease, and a 21 per cent increase in the risk of cardiovascular disease. – Daily Telegraph UK

The new generation of Ken Wills Furniture

For over 25 years the Ken Wills name was synonymous in New Zealand with exceptional quality, style and service. For 15 of those years Aaron Jones was a corner-stone of the Ken Wills team, honing his craft under Ken’s watchful eye. In 2016 Ken handed over the keys to the workshop to Aaron and a new generation business was born. Taking over the Washdyke premises, Mr Jones Furniture continues the Ken Wills Furniture tradition of ensuring customers have access to quality locally-made furniture. Mr Jones specialises in made-toorder furniture. Many people have the misconception

that if you get a piece of furniture made to fit your space, style, and requirements it is more expensive, but this is not the case. At Mr Jones Furniture we don’t have a large assembly line running off hundreds of the same piece of furniture so we can custom make furniture without the added cost of interrupting an assembly line. We also specialise in restorations, so if you have a piece of furniture that you love but is worse for wear, or an outdated piece of furniture we can restore/ alter it to create a new modern piece. Most companies try to cut costs on materials in order to be competitive in the retail market. But Mr Jones sells directly to

our customers so we can eliminate retail mark-ups. We source recycled timber from throughout New Zealand to build something unique, something that has character unsurpassed by new timber. We source new timber from sustainable forests so that we will leave a legacy our customers and their children will be proud of. We do all this because we want to make nothing less than the best furniture, with no compromises. Have a look at our website to see more www.mrjones.nz and follow us on Facebook to keep up to date with our latest creations. Advertising feature

Make mum’s day DINE OUT ON THIS MOTHER’S DAY Mum, words cannot express how much we love you. You wipe our tears when we are sad, care for us when we are ill. You stay up late to help us with those last-minute science projects due tomorrow, and cheer us on from the sideline at Saturday morning sport. No one loves us like you do, and while we may not always say it, mum we love you. There’s no doubting that you should show your mum how much you care every day. You don’t need a special day to go out of your way to do something nice, but Mother’s Day is a great opportunity to go that extra mile, pull out all the stops and really let mum know just how much she is appreciated and loved. Being a mum can be a very thankless job at times. You don’t receive monetary reward, you don’t receive praise and recognition from your boss. You don’t get a promotion, and you are dedicated to your position 24/7. Mums receive their currency in hugs and thank yous, so be sure to pay your mum well, she deserves it. Tell her every day how much you love her, and let her know when you think she’s

done something great. As an extra special treat, cook your mum breakfast (great breakfast recipes on pages 28 and 29 that kids can cook for their mum) or take mum out for lunch and dinner, so there’s no cooking and no cleaning up. With the array of quality restaurants available in Ashburton and around, she’s bound to be in for a treat. If you are looking to go out with your mum for lunch, Clearwater Restaurant at Hotel Ashburton will have a delicious buffet on offer. For a lovely evening idea on Mother’s Day, think Stonebridge. They will have a special menu packed with gourmet and organic food. If you’re treating mum to a special gift, how about beautiful flowers from Samantha Rose Flowers in Ashburton, nice pieces of clothing from Christchurch shops Magazine Designer and Made In The Shade or nice giftware from Mr Jones in Timaru. All those options would go down a treat. However you choose to celebrate, your mum will appreciate every little bit of effort that has gone into celebrating her on this special day.

Mother’s day breakfast, keep it simple ! If you want the kids to be involved, then the simpler the better.

Few sweet things

Bacon, egg and toast

Mum does not to be woken to the sound of half the kitchen being turned upside down in the preparation of her breakfast, neither does she want to be faced with any additional cleaning up after such a wonderful and thoughtful gesture. Here are some top tips to making this Mother’s Day breakfast the best possible start to the day

1

Be prepared, do you have a nice breakfast tray or can you borrow one?

2

Know what makes your Mum tick, does she like sweet or savoury.

3

Keep it simple, pre-prepared fruit salad and yoghurt is a great light and simple dish.

4

If Mum prefers something more continental try par baked croissants or pan au chocolate from the freezer section, with fresh berries and cream.

5

If it’s something more hearty that mum loves, then try a one pan omelette, keeping the mess to a minimum.

6

Some handpicked fresh flowers from the garden will make Mum smile.

7

Handmade cards from the children, with handmade gifts are always the best, so much better than shop bought.

8

A few colourful macaroons could add a bit of fun to the breakfast tray.

9

If Grannie wants to get in on the treat, let the kids make some scones or muffins beforehand at Gran’s house.

10

After the breakfast, make sure you leave Mum alone for time for a shower and a nice slow morning.

10 ways to pamper yourself Mother’s Day is a day to be indulged, pampered, waited on and attended to, as a show of appreciation for all your hard work and time spent caring, teaching and nurturing your children. If there are no children about to pamper you on Mother’s Day, just make sure you indulge and pamper yourself any which way you so desire. In other words, just put your feet up and take care of yourself if there is going to be no-one else around to pamper you. Take more than 10 minutes and enjoy 10 wonderful ways to pamper YOU: 1. Indulge in a long hot soak in a bath filled with essential oils, such as 4-8 drops of pure lavender essential oil, or any other essential oils to your liking. Light some candles or try and read a book without dropping it! A lovely relaxing way to start or end your day. 2. Purchase a magazine or a book and find a quiet spot where you won’t be interrupted. Sink into the depth of the words, and indulge in a bit of peace and tranquility, as reading is a wonderful way to calm the mind. 3. Listen to some calming/soothing music for up to an hour. Take note of your breathing rate afterwards and how relaxed you may feel as a consequence. Studies have shown that listening to music can reduce a busy mind by 85 per cent. 4. Take a walk in nature or by the seaside. Native bush, wide open spaces, lakes, streams and the crashing waves by the sea, can have a profoundly cathartic experience for you mentally and emotionally. This occurs through the smells affecting your limbic system which controls your emotions through scents – invigorating and/or calming. 5. Indulge in something creative. Perhaps it’s spending some time pottering around in your garden and trimming away the summer growth, or sewing, painting or writing poetry as a form of self-expression, or creating something magnificent in the kitchen.

NATURALLY YOU with Jane Logie

6. Indulge in your favourite sport – riding your bike out in nature with a group of friends, taking a walk around the block, or chucking in a few laps at your local pool. Any sport you generally love to do, but often struggle to find the time to schedule it in. 7. Go out for brunch/lunch or coffee/ tea and cake. Sometimes going out to lunch on Mother’s Day, or a high tea, can be the most lovely way to indulge, especially if you are able to do it with your family. There are sometimes so few occasions to get together and converse with one another. 8. Rent a DVD or go to the movies. If it’s a rainy day and not much point in venturing outdoors, going to the pictures can be a nice excuse to go out. Or you may prefer to stay cosy at home with a DVD. 9. Indulge in the sun with a glass of your favourite wine and soak up the sun’s zingy rays. They help you to feel fabulous due to the shift in biochemistry in your body and brain, as a result of its absorption through your eyes and on your skin. Soak it up! 10. Have an afternoon siesta! After a little indulgence in the lunchtime bubbly, perhaps an afternoon snooze would be on the cards as an indulgence to enjoy the afternoon. Or this may be a more suitable way to enjoy some quiet time and catch up after having a few sleepless nights. These are just some suggestions in ways you may like to choose to spend your Mother’s Day, leaving you feeling recharged, refreshed, re-energised and, hopefully, reconnected with your nearest and dearest and, most importantly, you. With the compliments of Jane Logie, a medicinal herbalist, clinical nutritionist and chef from Methven

Rasperry and almond friands (Gluten free) Indulge yourself this Mother’s Day with a freshly baked batch of raspberry friands, accompanied with your favourite hot beverage, served with whipped cream or a serve of yoghurt on the side. Indulge in these sweet, berry-delicious and chewy treats. – – – – –

1C frozen or fresh raspberries (approx. 60) 1/2 C rice flour 1 1/2 C icing sugar 1C almond meal (whole almonds ground) 185g butter 1 1/2 t vanilla bean essence or vanilla essence 6 small eggs Set the oven to 180°C and the rack needs to be in the centre of oven. Measure 1 rounded cup of raspberries and set aside. Melt the butter, then add the vanilla essence and set aside. Sift the rice flour and icing sugar together into a large glass bowl. Stir in the ground almond meal.

–

–

– –

– – –

Separate the egg whites from the yolks, set yolks aside in the fridge, whisk the egg whites until fluffy and increased by half in volume. Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients, then add approximately one egg white at a time stirring constantly as you go with either a metal whisk or spoon, and mix altogether until completely combined. Now add in the melted butter and vanilla essence and mix together well. Grease friand tin moulds or muffin tin moulds with oil from a spray can or lightly soak a paper towel in a small portion of rice bran oil and gently wipe thoroughly around moulds. Fill each muffin tin until they are 3/4 full and place 5 individual raspberries on top of each one, pressing into mix. Bake for 25 minutes in the middle of the oven, or when a muffin springs back when touched. Let stand for up to 5 minutes before taking out and placing on a rack to cool. Makes 10- 12. Terrace View on Carters Terrace in Tinwald takes the title as Ashburton’s first purpose-built retirement village.

door. It’s just one more on-site option that gives residents – and their family members – peace of mind.

It is set on five acres of land among peaceful, landscaped grounds and gardens, bordered on one side by the Ashburton River. The village has a variety of lifestyle and care options, including independent or assisted living in villas, apartments or studios, right through to full resthome, hospital or palliative care.

Depending on the lifestyle option chosen, residents of the villas can keep their independent living in a secure property offering full kitchen facilities, living rooms and bedrooms for family visitors. Each villa has been professionally designed and the neutral décor is just ready and waiting for occupation.

They have studios, or one and two bedroom apartments with parking space along with three bedroom villa options which come with garages

The apartment options offer the same security and freedom but in a smaller sized property. The apartments have also been designed to meet residents’ needs and care packages can be upgraded if those needs change.

There is also a communal lounge/ theatre space, dining room, laundry facilities and a café / bar facility. All the rooms on site are modern, warm and spacious. Whether it be Terrace View’s quality meals and onsite services, or getting one’s health care needs met, Terrace View’s staff are second to none, and offer residents’ quality care right at their

The studios also offer the same secure independence with a range of service packages including 11 care suites providing a higher level of care. The Terrace View resthome and hospital has professional staff working in a modern and purpose-built facility. The large rooms come complete with ensuite

and views of the grounds and gardens. The range of lifestyle options at Terrace View mean couples can remain close to each other in retirement if they have different health care needs. It’s just another bonus that gives some comfort for all concerned. As if the site and its facilities were not enough to prompt a call to Terrace View, the retirement village has another drawcard: at Terrace View, residency means no lawn mowing, maintenance or upkeep of the grounds or the property. That means more time to spend on other interests. The communal areas are a great way to keep in contact with other people and offer a facility for regular social activities. The lounge/theatre area, with bar facilities, is also a great place to relax with others while catching up on local news, gathering for national, or sporting, events around the large communal television or to just sit and admire the fabulous garden setting and listen to the birds.

What happened to employment standards? HR ESSENTIALS with Mike Johnson

A year ago some very significant legislation was passed. For many this was about removing draconian “zero-hour” contracts – something that required employees to be available to work at the whim of their employers ... with absolutely no guarantee they would ever be given any work! For others it provided extra controls to stop unscrupulous employers from abusing workers such as new migrants. But the reality was very different! Yes, it made such arrangements illegal; but it also made illegal a whole range of apparently workable arrangements for variable hours of work – unless documentation is brought into line. Now, since these laws are now applicable to all existing employees, if ever someone works uncertain hours (perhaps because work is weather dependent or because hours needed varies with the volume of customers) you should have carefully-worded agreements to specify how the actual hours are determined in a way that is fair to both parties. And, if ever you want to require someone to work a particular additional hour/ day – like to finish an important job or do a stock take – you will have to have an availability provision or an on-call system. Practically what does this all mean for you, now? Well I’ve seen no Court case

yet that tests the new laws; mostly what I am seeing is companies paying attention to the basics, which should have been in place anyway. But for small businesses and their staff I suggest you look out for: 1. Everybody should have a signed employment agreement (and businesses should have a copy) and most businesses will have updated or be updating these agreements for all staff to comply with the new laws. Remember most changes are protecting the rights of the employee so I do encourage everyone to work positively to achieve these changes. 2. Your bosses should be making it much clearer to you how your hours of work are actually determined – and what is promised as a minimum. But let’s understand – where clauses are being added around times when a shift is to be cancelled – this is all about making

things work for a business to remain profitable and keep everyone in jobs – and having a fair and reasonable process, which you now have a chance to negotiate. 3. All businesses have to keep accurate leave and wage records. One thing that I have identified is that not all payroll systems calculate leave accurately for staff working variable hours – using an hourly average instead of a weekly average. So bosses – if you have staff whose hours go up and down from one week to another – check with your payroll provider – do they use weekly average calculations for leave? You may find your staff have been underpaid and your leave records inaccurate. 4. Many businesses operate unofficial “on call” systems. If yours is one – or if you work on one, then you should be developing a formal contract that agrees with legislation, and ensures compensation is being paid for being available in this way. I am a firm believer that there can always be words crafted to get an agreement that legally works for you (as long as you seek to comply). I can help or point you in the right direction. Next month, watch this space for some discussion around when casual employment is not casual!

Want to get your employment agreements right, so they protect you? Talk to us first. We take the worry out of employment compliance and get your people management right. Who? When? What? Be in to win

Timing is everything Shona Bourke is this month’s winner with the following question:

Email goodies@theguardian.co.nz with Daltons Lawn Fertiliser prize pack in the subject heading,

Can strawberries grow all year round? Strawberries are really a summer crop, producing ripe berries from November through till late January. They’re traditionally planted in the winter months so they can establish a well-formed root system prior to spring growth. By growing your strawberry plants under plastic it is possible to pick your first strawberries a little earlier, eg: late October. Autumn and winter are the best times for preparing your strawberry beds and for dreaming about the delicious strawberries you are going to grow! Sadly there is no way to produce your strawberries out of season. If you have existing strawberries in the garden now, side dress them with strawberry fertiliser in November to encourage good strong growth. But always be careful not to over-fertilise your strawberry plants as this can lead to an enormous amount of green leaf growth instead of fruiting. Mulch around plants with peastraw, crushed bark or hay to keep a clean bed for the developing strawberries to lie on, as well as preventing disease and weeds.

or write to Daltons Lawn Fertiliser pack giveaway, Box 77, Ashburton.

Make haste in the garden Autumn has rolled into town bringing shorter days with a definite chill in the air. Leaves will start to turn as we embark on a busy month in the garden. A very ‘fruitful’ time in the garden with late harvest of numerous vegetables such as jerusalem artichokes, beans, beetroot, carrots, corn, cucumber, kumara, leeks, lettuce, onion, potatoes, pumpkin, radishes, silverbeet, spinach and tomatoes. If you haven’t prepared your winter vegetable garden now, then get started. Include plenty of compost and a base fertiliser of blood and bone. If possible, raise the earth to be planted to ensure winter veges do not become water logged over wet winter months. Winter veggies to plant in April include broad beans, carrots, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, onions, peas, radish, spinach, swedes and turnips. In the flower garden, your summer annuals will be winding down. Continue to dead-head plants where you want to prolong displays. Soil should be prepared for new plantings in the same fashion as the vegetable garden. Plan your winter flowering garden carefully to achieve longevity of blooms throughout the season. Winter annuals to plant in April include; alyssum, calendulas, cornflower, cinerarias, lobelia, nemesia, pansies, snapdragons, stock, sweet william and violas. April and May are the main months for

planting new strawberry plants. Strawberries crop freely on one and sometimes two-year-old plants, and then they should be removed. Strawberries grow best in fertile soils and beds should be raised to ensure good drainage. Space new plants 150-200mm apart, on mounds up to 200mm above the existing ground level. Passionfruit, feijoas and early kiwi-

fruit (towards the end of April) can all be harvested, as can late varieties of apples and pears. Stone fruit – plums, nectarines and peaches – should all be sprayed with a copper compound as part of the end-of-season clean-up. Prune peach and nectarine trees as the leaves fall. Lemons will start to ripen in late April. New season fruit trees will start arriving at garden centres next month, so plan your new plantings and commence preparing planting sites. Autumn is the time to lift and divide any perennials where overcrowding has occurred. This involves trimming any old growth back to ground level, digging up, dividing and then replanting where required. Not all perennials require this treatment and therefore can remain undisturbed for many years. This is a very safe time for ‘patching’ up any lawn problems, although it is probably getting a little late for sowing entire lawns, especially in colder parts of New Zealand like Ashburton. Lawn fertiliser can be applied in early April and this will be the last application until spring. Replant containers with salad vegetables, herbs or flowering winter annuals and move them into a position that is warmer and sunnier during the winter months. MAD MAMA with DESME DANIELS

It’s been a tough few weeks for every parent in Mid Canterbury, the recent teenage rampages throughout the district committing crimes and then a final explosive episode at the local college. But, you’ll be glad to hear I’m not about to start on a crusade about the blame game. I will say though, it stopped me in my tracks and made me look at my kids and my parenting skills. There is no getting away from the fact that this a huge topic of conversation, both in and out of work, fuelled not only by social media but by well-liked local columnists and friends and acquaintances with the knowledge of the history behind the incidents. Now, I have four kids who could not be more different, they sure have their ups and downs, and god can they be annoying at times, and yes they are difficult, challenging and frustrating – but never to the extreme we have witnessed of other kids in our community. Why? Well for those who know me (the Grumpy Cat sign stuck to my office door is a dead give away), when I need to be a little fiercer, I can be. If you push my buttons or test my limits then the gloves will come off. All is fun and giggles till someone over-

steps the mark, then the angry mum fierce voice comes out that can freeze water at 500 paces and sure stops my kids in their shoes. Fear flashes in their eyes and they suddenly behave.

love, there is nowhere for respect and trust to come from. With Mother’s Day around the corner (yes Miss Perfect Daughter you better be reading this) I’m expecting my usual breakfast in bed (food I buy the day before – to

ensure the breakfast happens and that I like the food given to me as a “surprise”) so the orange juice, berries and croissants are all pre-bought and subtly left in the kitchen. I spend the evening hoping the walking food monster that frequents my kitchen between midnight and 3am does not devour them as a quick snack. I’ll expect the wonderful handmade cards with the most random things written on them, like “I love you mum because you make me my lunch – love Anya” …. I’ll pop the cards in a drawer saved specially for hoarding all things handmade by the kids. Then I will happily force the kids, including the eldest 18-year-old boy to endure “family time”. This “family time” happens often in our household, it’s my attempt to halt our hectic social lives and give us all some quality time together. It is loathed by the kids, groans and moans of “oh seriously – family time – again – urgghhh”. But once the moaning has subsided and the electronic gadgetry is left at home the four chillblains suddenly start to reconnect, bond and have fun. A throwback to the Waltons and Little House on the Prairie – good old wholesome family fun. So I will be watching the weather forecast to plan the Mother’s Day family outing and

we will have fun – not having fun is not an option! Just to change tack quickly, I’m not sure if many people in New Zealand saw the documentary with Rio Ferdinand who lost his wife to cancer in 2015. He’s finally speaking out about being a solo parent to his kids whilst dealing with his grief. I think having someone talk so candidly about his journey, puts the fear of God into me about having my journey with my kids cut short and makes me want to “make memories” and enjoy every second that I can. We all have to do the boring stuff – cleaning, food shopping, gardening, laundry, paying bills, working – oh, it’s relentless week on week. But if we can make time for our kids and our friends and our family, then the quality time gives us back some quality to our lives. It gives us purpose and enjoyment and laughter and love. So, Happy Mother’s Day, to all the mums, moms and mummies and to all the dads who have to be mums and dads (MADS) to their kids – have an amazing day and make time for all the special people in your lives. Remember, hug your babies daily, never be too busy for a hug. It shows them you love them and gives them the foundations to be confident, secure, respectful mini grown ups ... we hope!
