Awards well-deserved

ften there is an historical component in our stories. Perhaps because enthusiasts have shared information about their historic

vehicles. On other occasions historical facts have been mentioned, take for example a story about the car in which Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated. That event took place in Sarajevo in 1914, and our story about the car was prefaced with a brief explanation of the factors which led up to the assassination and the horrific results which followed. After publication quite a few readers commented on an obvious interest in history and asked what prompted that. To a large extent credit must go to one of my former teachers – Brain Edmondston – who made history interesting. Sadly Brian passed away last week. Brian encouraged his pupils to look beyond an event and also consider its causes and effects. The assignation in Sarajevo 104 years ago was and will remain a major event in human history. Before publishing our take on it I ran those thoughts past Brian, he confirmed the summary and a particularly interesting discussion followed. At the time it seemed quite special to think a former teacher and former student could have a chat like that. And it confirmed what so many of us are fortunate to know – Brain Edmondston was a natural teacher. Because of Brian’s wonderful nature and clever sense of humour it was always easy to engage in interesting discussions with him. Brian himself has an important place in the history of our town and of Ashburton College. Having taught at Hakatere College he was among the very talented faculty who

were original teachers at Ashburton College. He and Audrey came to Ashburton in 1964 to complete two years country service – a requirement at the time – thankfully they decided to stay for the remainder of Brian’s teaching career and into retirement. Brian influenced lots of people and taught them lots of things. We hope it comforts Audrey and her family to know Brian Edmondston is remembered for all sorts of reasons, not the least for being a wonderful gentleman, teacher and historian. History of another sort was recorded recently by the local Branch of the Vintage Car Club when three long service awards were presented. Les Nell and Ron Winchester each received 50-year membership badges. A similar badge recognising Jocelyn Hosken’s dedication was presented posthumously to her family. Interestingly these three members joined the Vintage Car Club before the local group gained full Branch status. Each has been a stalwart of the organisation and has encouraged and made a huge contribution to historic motoring. The Ashburton Branch itself will turn 50 next year and that milestone will be celebrated when it hosts the 2019 National South Island Easter Rally. Planning for that event which will attract many enthusiasts in a wide range of vehicles is well under way, with interesting rally routes being mapped out and some fun entertainment on the cards.

When referring to Brian the writer couldn’t resist saying “Brian teached me history”. Brian’s quick retort “yes that’s right and you did OK at it, but perhaps the same can’t be said of your English!”

Tribute to a legend

elebrating one of the most important countries in its racing and family history, Brabham Automotive is teaming up with Michelin to debut the sensational Brabham BT62 in the United States, with a fitting tribute to American hero and ex-Brabham Formula 1 winner, Dan Gurney, at this year’s Monterey Car Week. Fresh from its public dynamic launch at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Brabham BT62 is set to win the hearts and minds of the American public at a series of prestigious events on the Monterey Peninsula. Working in conjunction with technical partner Michelin, the car will be centre stage on the tyre manufacturer’s stand at Laguna Seca on August 24 and 26. Over the week the car will also appear at the McCall’s Motorworks Revival and at the Exotics on Cannery Row. The BT62 will be proudly sporting a new tribute livery, in honour of Dan Gurney, the first ever driver to win a Formula 1 Grand Prix in a Brabham racing car. Finished in Brabham’s distinctive green and gold colours, it’s a homage to the Brabham BT7 that Gurney steered to victory at the French Grand Prix of 1964. A highly successful racing driver, race car constructor, and team owner in his own right, Gurney was the racer Sir Jack Brabham chose as his first team mate for his fledgling Brabham racing team back in 1963.

Heralding the start of an exciting new chapter for the iconic marque, the BT62 has been designed from the ground up to feature a host of unique engineering details and draws on the project team’s vast experience to create a car without equal. n the fifth and final of a planned series of lap record attempts across Europe in 2018, Honda has set a new 2 minute 10.19sec record for a front wheel drive production car at the Hungaroring GP circuit in Hungary. The Civic Type R was driven by Formula One World Champion and current NSX Super GT driver, Jenson Button. The track holds special significance for Button, as the circuit where he won the first Grand Prix of his career with Honda in 2006. The Hungaroring circuit is a twisty and narrow 4.38km track with 180degree corners and a complex chicane, making it one of the more technical tracks in Europe. However, this proved to be a perfect demonstration of the Civic Type R’s Adaptive Damper System, delivering a firmer, flatter ride and greater agility for high performance handling around the tight circuit. Alongside the suspension system, the unique steering setup and improved aerodynamics enabled Button to secure the lap record for Honda at the Grand Prix circuit. Speaking about the lap record, Jenson Button said: “We came here to the Hungaroring, where I won my first F1 race in 2006 with Honda, to set a new frontwheel drive production lap record in the new Type R, and I’m very happy that we did it!” Commenting on the Type R itself, he added: “The first thing I noticed when I left the pit lane was how neutral the car was. “I come from a background that is not front-wheel drive focused, so it was very different for me but because the Type R is so well balanced it was instantly really enjoyable and more natural. “The thing that surprised me most is how late you can brake with this car. “The manual gearbox works really well, too. Most cars these days don’t come with manual boxes, so it’s nice to have that manual feel. “You always feel a lot more connected to the car.”

“ Honda set the original benchmark time for Hungaroring during a similar challenge in 2016, using the previous generation Civic Type R. This new benchmark time is the fifth front-wheel drive lap record set by Honda in The Type R Challenge 2018, achieving the objective set out by the challenge, which was thought up after the Type R became the fastest frontwheel drive production car ever round the Nürburgring Nordschleife in April 2017, with a lap time of 7 minutes 43.8 seconds. These six records cement the Civic Type R’s position as the quickest car in its class. The challenge saw five of Honda’s racing champions put the car through its paces around five tracks in Europe, setting new record lap times for a frontwheel drive production car. WTCR driver Tiago Monteiro set a lap record of 2mins 01.84secs at Estoril circuit in Portugal. BTCC legend Matt Neal set a lap record of 2mins 31.32secs at Silverstone in the UK. Japense Super GT star, Betrand Baguette, set a record of 2mins 53.72secs at SpaFrancorchamps in Belgium. WTCR driver, Esteban Guerrieri set a new 2mins 1.51secs lap at the MagnyCours GP circuit in France. Newly engineered from the ground up to deliver the most rewarding driving experience of any Civic Type R, this latest generation Civic development programme is the largest in Honda’s history. The high performance hatchback remains the quickest and fastest accelerating car in its class, lent to a combination of its lightweight, highly rigid body shell and unique dual-axis strut front suspension system, which reduces torque steer and conquers hard cornering. Button finished with: “This new Type R is a mega bit of kit, as they always have been, and it’s definitely not lost any of its charm.”

he BMW i8 is the sports car of the future in the showrooms of today. The 2+2 seater has been a technological pioneer and the world’s best-selling hybrid sports car since it arrived in 2014. Now in 2018 it is joined by a new model that adds further allure to the arena of sustainable driving pleasure. The all new BMW i8 Roadster takes the combination of emissions-free and highperformance motoring and adds open-top thrills. It is unique in offering such performance and silent acceleration with the pure sensation of roof-down driving. First shown as a concept car back at the Beijing Motor Show in 2012, the BMW i8 Concept Spyder showed what a roofless version of the, as yet, unlaunched i8 Coupé might look like. It too featured clever packaging and dihedral doors despite the design challenges of not having a fixed roof. Jump forward to 2018 and much of that striking original concept car has been retained in this finished vehicle. From innovative packaging of the roof, through to retaining the iconic doors and maintain the i8 family side profile, something many roadsters and convertibles fail to do when switching from hard-top to soft-top variant. Driver and passenger in the all-new BMW i8 Roadster will look up to find either the open sky or a high-quality, all-season fabric soft-top with high-level soundproofing. All-electric operation ensures the roof opens or closes in an almost silent hush, within 15 seconds and while travelling at up to 31mph. This makes the i8 Roadster the BMW with the fastest opening roof across all the company’s models. The i8 Roadster is unique in offering a fabric soft-top which stows into a perpendicular position in the rear when opened.

This allows for far better packaging and day to day practicality. The three segments of the roof fold vertically in a Z-shape, thus taking up very little space and leaving an additional 100 litres of storage capacity between the roof box and the seats. This is in addition to the 88 litres of cargo space in the rear compartment. Opening the roof raises the rear window automatically by around 30mm, reducing air turbulence inside the cabin and ensuring passengers can enjoy the pleasure of open-top driving with minimal disturbance. The driver can adjust the height of the

The design cues common to the i8 Coupé also appear on the i8 Roadster and include dihedral doors that open forwards and upwards as well as optimised aerodynamics. The low bonnet, the BMW kidney grille, air flap control system, Air Curtains in the front apron, sealed underbody, contoured side skirts, stream flow lines of the car’s flanks, and air ducts between the rear lights and roof frame allow the air to be channeled extremely effectively. window at the touch of a button and control airflow as desired. Intelligent, lightweight design and innovative production technology play a key role in the car’s construction. For example, aluminum elements connecting the roof with the body of the car are produced via a new 3D printing process. This manufacturing method breaks new ground and allows the parts to be produced in a geometric form, which would not be possible using conventional casting techniques. The framework was provided by the new LifeDrive vehicle architecture for BMW i models, whose horizontally split structure comprising an aluminium chassis and a CFRP passenger cell offers an exceptional degree of design freedom. The C-pillars are adorned with beauti-

exclusive 20-inch light-alloy wheels in a W-spoke design. Intelligent lightweight design also makes an impact here, with each wheel weighing around one kilogram less than the lightest wheels previously available for the i8. The progressive style of the i8 Roadster shines through clearly in the interior design. Standard specification for both includes a sports steering wheel and multi-functional instrument display plus Carpo interior trim comprising full-leather upholstery in Ivory White for the Coupé and Ivory White/Black for the Roadster. The new BMW i8 Roadster is powered by a hybrid synchronous electric motor and a three-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. The engine’s power is fed to the rear wheels through a

six-speed Steptronic transmission, while the electric motor propels the front wheels via a two-speed automatic gearbox. The end result is a hybrid-specific allwheel-drive system that glues the car to the road. However, to enhance low emissions running and overall performance the number of driving situations where the electric motor is solely responsible for powering the car has been significantly increased. By contrast, the combustion engine is only brought into play when accelerating hard, and is switched off again more frequently with a measured driving style. The improved technology means the i8 Roadster can cover up to 33 miles with zero emissions, broadening the reach of allelectric mobility well beyond the city limits. The battery cells’ higher capacity means that the proportion of all-electric driving can be increased substantially, even in hybrid mode. With the default driving mode engaged, the i8 Roadster is capable of pulling away and reaching speeds of up to 65mph purely on the electric motor’s power, making it possible to drive with zero emissions not just in town, but on country roads as well. If the eDrive button is pressed, the all-electric threshold is increased further to 75mph. The i8’s combustion engine has also undergone further improvements. The turbocharged three-cylinder unit featuring direct injection and VALVETRONIC variable valve timing extracts a maximum output of 231hp from its displacement of just 1.5-litres, plus peak torque of 320Nm. It generates a distinctive soundtrack that now has an even sportier note when its power reserves are called upon. The system output produced by the electric motor and engine acting in unison has increased to 374hp. The new i8 Roadster has an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.
