Mono in Mexico
N
ew Briggs Automotive Company dealership BAC Mexico has given the Mexican supercar community its first sample of Mono courtesy of exhilarating experience sessions in
Mexico City. BAC Mexico launched earlier this month to over 200 VIP guests in the capital, with a phenomenal reaction to the fully road-legal car’s unveiling. Naturally, interest has been incredibly high since the launch, prompting BAC to get potential customers behind the wheel. Mono is the world’s only single-seater, roadlegal supercar that’s become something of a global phenomenon – being exported to over 30 territories worldwide. It’s regarded as the ultimate piece of sporting equipment; a tool that has been perfected for the sport of driving to provide a totally focused and unique experience. And BAC Mexico’s special guests were able to enjoy everything it had to offer over three days of action. Dark day for motor racing
S
ignificant events have an impact and often we associate them with what we were doing at the time they occurred. A classic example – albeit now for people of a certain age – is what one was doing when JFK was assassinated. There have of course been other sadly often tragic events since which will be indelibly edged in the memory. Many motoring enthusiasts, especially those interested in Formula One, will no doubt remember how they felt and perhaps what they were doing when they heard Jim Clark lost his life at the wheel of a race car. Last week marked the 50th anniversary of Jim Clark’s death during a Formula Two race at Hockenheim in Germany. At the time car racing was pretty dangerous and there was far too much carnage on the tracks. Many drivers, no matter their level of ability or experience, died or were seriously injured. Without suggesting the racing fraternity and supporters were blasé about what was happening, it was almost accepted some drivers would not survive. After all racing had always been risky. In a way Jim Clark’s untimely death made people think. An incredibly talented driver who had achieved enormous success, Jim Clark was rated amongst the best and had he lived would surely have gone on to even greater success. So all of a sudden people began to ask how this could possibly happen to a driver like him, a man who was so careful and always seemed to be in control. Looking back, safety inside and outside race cars was certainly not always great. Drivers were not cocooned in their cars as they are these days, nor by modern standards did they have much in the way of protective clothing. Track safety was minimal. Jim Clark was a proud Scotsman and after witnessing some horrific incidents his compatriot Jackie Stewart was at the forefront of promoting safety. Consequently safety improved and while losses continued, thankfully over time these have become far less common than previously. But what of Jim Clark? What was it about this man that he’s still

revered 50 years after his death and people still recall feeling stunned at hearing of his demise? Put simply he was natural driver and a good man. At the time of his death, aged just 32, he had at the time won more grands prix than anyone else. A Scottish farmer, he had come up through the ranks of club racing and then one day amazed legendary Lotus race car designer Colin Chapman when he drove a Lotus. Jim Clark’s performance was incredible, made more so by the fact it was his first ever drive in a single seater. Chapman immediately recognised talent and a close relationship developed. Each was a genius in his own right as designer and driver respectively and consequently massive success followed. A world champion twice – in 1963 and 1965 – Jim Clark and Lotus took America

by storm when winning the Indianapolis 500 in 1965. He was the greatest driver of his era and remains among the best of all time. Jim Clark embodied everything that was good about a true legend – skill, smiles and
humility – combined with a quiet-natured steely determination to succeed. His death shocked those close to him and those who knew of him, but maybe it was not in vain because it certainly help make the motor racing fraternity more safety conscious. The respect in which he was held saw thousands of people gather in Jim Clark’s small home town for his funeral service. Because of the man he was his memory will live on in the annals of motor racing and those who admired him will say they recall where they were or what they were doing when they heard of Jim Clark’s passing.

Beetle revitalised
O
verpaid designers and architects with thick-rimmed glasses and pointed shoes and jeans that are too tight have been crowing for years now that ‘retro is in’. It’s led to a renaissance in all sorts of weird stuff from the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s that’s now in fashion again, and if you ask me the whole thing is just a scheme to make money out of re-selling all the stuff that time long ago dictated was junk to the hapless and the gullible. So, where did the retro craze originate? Perhaps, it might’ve come from the ‘new’ Volkswagen Beetle. Though the German marque have now killed off the adorkable little hatchback, it’s hard to deny that it was a successful throwback. Based on Golf underpinnings, the Beetle injected Volkswagen with a much needed shot of fun, which did wonders for their reception in America.
And, perhaps most notably of all, it added to the Beetle’s iconic story without taking away from it. So it’s without surprise that in this postBeetle world, the nameplate still has its ardent fans. And they include a guy called Georg Memminger. He and his company, Memminger Feine-Cabrios, have been restoring Beetles to their former glory since 1992. And now they’ve decided to make one of their own – a tasty gunmetal morsel called the Roadster 2.7. From the outset you can tell that this isn’t just any Beetle, with running boards and a wider track complimented by lightweight five-spoke wheels and targa pods behind the two seats. Racy vibes continue inside with black and red bucket
seats completed with retro (ugh) tartan inserts and red belts. The most interesting thing though is what powers it. That 2.7 in the car’s name, as you might’ve guessed, is a reference to the engine’s capacity. It’s an air-cooled 2.7-litre four-banger boxer engine; inspired by VW power-plants of old, and packing 156kW, 247Nm, and a
top speed of 200km/h. That’s a fascinating recipe in a vehicle that only weighs 800kg, and is further enhanced with brakes from a Porsche 911 and revised suspension. Want to sign on the dotted line? Hold your horses ... Memminger are using this as merely a concept. It will enter production (with a thoroughly limited production number of 20 cars) if there’s enough interest from the market. And ... come on. Surely there will be.
