Christmas has a special magic this year for Kylie Hende and Caleb Flanagan – instead of a family separated by distance and a sick baby, thanks to the kindness of strangers they’ll be a family reunited. Without the help of the Angel Flight Charity brothers Regan and Caleb would have been without their mum and their new sister on Christmas day. Instead, the boys and Kylie’s mum Karen Breakwell were to fly to Auckland yesterday where they will spend Christmas as a family. The thought of being apart from her boys at Christmas was heart-breaking, Kylie said. “My youngest is missing me very much. We looked into flights ourselves, but we just don’t have this kind of money,” she said. Six weeks ago Kylie and Caleb were planning a very different kind of Christmas. They were looking forward to welcoming their daughter Maddy and Kylie’s boys Regan, 7, and Caleb, 6, were excited about the arrival of a sister. It was a Christmas season that promised untold joy. Her pregnancy had been problem-free and when Maddy arrived five weeks ago by caesarean Kylie was delighted. For the family, it would be a Christmas with every cause for celebration. But instead of celebrating, Kylie and Caleb have watched their precious daughter struggling to breathe. Maddy was found to have mitral valve regurgitation and an emphysemic lobe on her left lung. The only option was surgery. She’d spent her first weeks in the neo-natal unit in Christchurch Hospital because her breathing had not stabilised, a mitral valve fault was identified and on Sunday Kylie and Maddy were flown to Auckland’s Starship Hospital. On Tuesday she underwent mitral valve repair surgery, but that operation was not entirely successful. And that means, Kylie said, their daughter will need further surgery for either another valve repair or a replacement. That surgery will not take place until Maddy is stronger and that could be any-

where from a few weeks to a few months, Kylie said. “She’s doing really well, she’s a real fighter, but at the moment I have no idea how long we’ll have to stay in Auckland.” As she recovers from surgery Maddy is kept sedated and is tube-fed to ensure her energy goes into healing and growing. The
end goal is to have her stabilised so she can go home to grow and build up the strength to face a second operation. “We’re just taking this day by day,” Kylie said. It’s been a heart-wrenching few weeks, Kylie said, with the most traumatic moments when they saw their daughter post surgery while her chest was still open to allow swelling in her heart to subside. Her chest is now closed but that image is burned into Kylie’s brain. Kylie and Caleb are staying in Starship’s Ronald McDonald room so they can be with their daughter, but yesterday when Karen, Regan and Caleb arrived, they moved to Ronald McDonald House to await the arrival of Santa. Regan and Caleb say they’ve told Santa they won’t be home for Christmas and that Nana has assured them he’ll know where to find them. It’s a Christmas of many firsts for the boys – first with their new sister, first time in an aeroplane and first visit to Auckland, but

even with that excitement on board, they both say they’re looking forward most of all to seeing mum and Maddy. Kylie’s mum Karen has become full-time carer of her grandsons. Work has been put on hold and like Maddy’s parents, she’s just looking forward to the day the new baby can come home. “She’s the absolute spitting image of Kylie when she was born,” Karen said. Ask the boys what they think of their sister and there’s just one word they use – beautiful. They’ve made her Christmas cards and have bought her presents. “Dear Maddy, we all hope you come home soon. I miss you, Maddy and Mum”… seven-year-old Regan wrote. Partner Caleb heads home on Boxing Day, her mum and sons on Thursday and Kylie will then face a new and uncertain chapter in her life with Maddy. The goal is for her daughter to gain enough strength to be able to come home until her next operation. Kylie won’t be alone in Starship Hospital, however, as there are other parents in the same situation. “We’re there with three other children and their parents. They’re from all over the South Island and they all have heart children.”

Flooding threatened Methven homes and businesses as a freak thunderstorm hit the town. More than 50 millimetres fell on Saturday with rainfall rates of 25.6 millimetres per hour under one storm in the late afternoon. The MetService reported thunderstorms in Canterbury and Otago over recent days “have lit up the Christmas lights in the sky”. But Methven residents are feeling far from festive about the event, which is yet another continuation of wet and cool conditions marring the first month of summer.
Thunder and lightning preceded the deafening downpour which hit the town about 4.15pm. Mark Jacobs and a friend were working on renovations to the interior of the former craft shop at The Mall when the deluge struck. The property manager said within 15 minutes water was starting to come into surrounding shops of a hairdressing salon, laundrette and former ice-cream parlour. “Fortunately we were working when it happened, if it had of happened one hour later we would not have known until the next day,” Jacobs said. Footpaths and kerbsides turned
into lakes as stormwater drains were overwhelmed. Water pooled along The Mall and in a courtyard behind shops and Café Primo. Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade members responded and pumped water from the site for over half an hour, altogether pumping more than 20,000 litres out. Jacobs praised brigade members and business owners and their staff who raced to the scene. One person was able to bring sandbags which were put down as a precaution, and timber was used as barriers to stop more water coming in. Everyone cleaned up with brooms and squeegees.
The deluge lasted about half an hour. Jacobs said in the 20 years he had been in town it was the first time he had ever seen the shop area become flooded. “It’s unprecedented.” Long-time Methven resident Martin Nordqvist said it was the heaviest bout of rain for at least 20 years in the town. “It just went on and on and on, and then it eased a wee bit and then down it would come again,” Nordqvist said. A stockwater race on Forest Drive was almost overflowing near Morgan Street. “For 10 minutes it went from al-
most being a major flood back to normal,” he said. Brigade members also responded to three callouts to residential properties to pump surface water pooling outside. The Ashburton District Council closed roads and erected flooding signs. The worst-affected roads were Highbank Cairnbrae Road, Barkers Road at Dry Creek, Methven Chertsey Road, Lyndhurst Road, Urrall Road and Lauriston Barrhill Road. The South Island is at least in for some good weather over Christmas, and temperatures are forecast to reach 23°C today and 22°C tomorrow in Ashburton.

Mid Canterbury farmers gave new MPI director-general Ray Smith high marks after his promised return to Ashburton to remove problems from the mycoplasma bovis response. Smith, who replaced Martyn Dunne, arrived in the township last week again with officials to talk about challenges faced by farmers and provide them with an update on the response to eradicate the cattle disease. Last month he pledged to return to the township before Christmas at a farmer meeting at the Ashburton offices of Federated Farmers. In his comments Smith made it a priority to improve the disease response. The high marks from farmers come with the proviso that fur-

payments. The MBovis Affected Farmers Support Group (MASG) says the return visit is another step in the right direction. Spokesman Duncan Barr said positive progress had been made since Smith’s last visit. “We have finally got MPI listening to farmers and understanding where they need to improve. There is some good, honest communication going on.’’ He said the main progress had been made in opening communication lines between farmers and the ministry and there was now open dialogue between them. “They have pretty well been told in no uncertain circumstances there was pretty much no trust and they understand that now. … We need strong leadership from MPI and haven’t had that in the past and Ray’s leadership is really strong and that’s encouraging.
We respect the man for [returning to Ashburton].’’ Barr said there remained a “long way’’ to go in rebuilding relations, but progress was being made. Among farmer complaints were long delays in compensation payments. So far MPI has paid $37 million to $38 million in compensation, of which $7m has gone out the past few weeks. Barr said the fast forwarding of processing payments was a positive sign, but farmers had to understand that change took time. He said the focus on payments was secondary to farmer welfare and the problems of farmers with M. bovis were “multi-faceted’’. Barr encouraged farmers to keep an open dialogue with MASG through its Facebook page and with farming leaders.

Chance for seniors to brush up on culinary skills Ashburton’s seniors will have an opportunity early next year to brush up their culinary skills. A Senior Chef course will be run by Pegasus Health and it’s open to older people who live alone or with another person who want to improve their health through practical cooking skills, meal planning and budgeting. Across Canterbury the programme welcomed its 2000th participant and last week Christchurch’s Senior Chef graduates celebrated an early Christmas. Ashburton’s course will be held in February and as well as teaching participants new cooking skills, it provides social interaction and counters loneliness. Peter de Wit came along to Senior Chef classes at the suggestion of his wife, Pauline. He’d always been happy to cook but said his wife didn’t completely trust his abilities. “I learned everything from how to read a recipe to the nutritional
In brief Minor car fire Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade members had a fire callout about 2.20pm yesterday. Firefighters responded to a minor car fire, which had erupted when an engine caught fire as an engine swap was under way. The people reinstalling the engine had managed to get the fire out before the arrival of firefighters, who then used their imaging camera to check for any potential hot spots. • The brigade responded to a false alarm callout from the automatic fire alarm in the shopping strip opposite Mitre 10 the evening before.

Foodborne illness strikes about 200,000 New Zealanders every year with around half of those cases occurring in the home. Campylobacter is the most common, others are salmonella, staphylococcus, norovirus, ecoli, hepatitis A and listeria. Cases increase in summer, mainly due to warmer weather. So clean before you handle food, cook food (especially chicken and mince) until the juices run clear and chill food to stop bacteria growing.
E-scooter crash A 35-year-old man has been rushed to Auckland City Hospital after colliding with a truck while riding an e-scooter. Emergency services were called to Parnell Road, between Maunsell Road and Domain Drive, after receiving a call at 9.25am yesterday. A police spokesman said the man was stable with minor injuries. Home baking makes David’s day David Shaw was thrilled when he opened his front door to find Olivia, Lucas and Harry Reid standing there with home baking for him. “I don’t know who put my name forward,” he said. “I cannot thank you enough for doing this for me, it is so kind. Lively six-year-old twins Harry and Lucas helped mum, Mandy, make the chocolate chip biscuits. However, she was on her own with the coffee and date slice. Olivia carried out the official role of handing over the baking to Mr Shaw with style and grace. David was doubly grateful to receive the baking. A friend of his was about to collect him and they were off to Invercargill. “Now we will have something delicious to eat on the way there,” he said. David shifted to Ashburton 20 years ago from his home town of Millers Flat in Southland. His Christmas Day will be spent in Ashburton. “I have lots of family here, so I’m bound to be going somewhere exciting. I’m very grateful to live in Ashburton, I’m well looked after here.”

The event, run for the first time in the July school holidays, proved so popular that it has made a summer return. It involves children visiting the

There’s a lot to like about Christmas . . . Y
ou can choose your friends but you can’t choose your relatives, is how the saying goes, and at no time more so than Christmas does this sentiment ring true. As many people as there are looking forward to catching up with beloved family members, there will be just as many wondering how they will get through their Christmas dinner without telling Uncle Bert to please put more plum pudding in his cake hole. The family side of things not only has the frustration of enduring such delightful family exchanges, but coping with the sadness of losing loved ones who have passed, as those empty places around the dining table correspond to empty spaces in one’s heart. For me, Christmas memories
go back decades to when my sisters, brother and I would catch up with our cousins. All 10 of us would sit round the kids’ table and wolf down our pudding, first ferreting out one or two 20 cent pieces, before running off to swim and generally have fun in the sunny outdoors. The day would always end on a sad note as we were inevitably told it was time for everyone to head home again. As we grew up, the focus went to our own new families and sharing Christmas with our other
halves, children, parents and in-laws. For my wee family of me and my two children, our pets were a big focus as we would put treats in their stockings and enjoy having a play around on Christmas morning, before heading off to the grandparents and other family members. Kids grow up, and this year my daughter is home from overseas but my son is in Wellington and he and his partner are both rostered on at work. It is the first Christmas I won’t have both my children with me, but that is life, and life goes on. I am grateful for the fact in recent years myself and my partner have enjoyed big family Christmases, as we fit in both my children and his, and his side of the family, who are committed to getting all the growing cuzzies
together just as my parents were all those years ago. I have one or two friends who recoil at the thought of large family gatherings at Christmas. As much as they like catching up with people important to them in their lives, they think Christmas is over-rated and it is silly to put emphasis on this one day of the year. I guess they are turned off by the chaos of the season, the rampant consumerism, and perhaps most of all the notion of conforming to some perfect family ideal. Oh well, call me old-fashioned, but I’m happy to celebrate the season with as many people as possible. I also like to feel it in my fingers and toes as I watch
Love Actually for the hundredth time, get teary-eyed when I hear Christmas carols cos they remind me of my late parents, wrap tinsel round wee Molly the cocker spaniel and upload photos of her, and take the opportunity to absorb the spirituality of the season at church services. Yes, I agree there is a lot to not like about Christmas, but there’s a lot to like about it as well.

In 1865, several veterans of the Confederate Army formed a private social club in Pulaski, Tennessee, that was the original version of the Ku Klux Klan. In 1871, Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Aida had its world premiere in Cairo, Egypt. In 1906, Canadian physicist Reginald A. Fessenden became the first person to transmit the human voice (his own) as well as music over radio, from Brant Rock, Massachusetts. In 1913, 73 people, most of them children, died in a crush of panic after a false cry of “Fire!” during a Christmas party for striking miners and their families at the Italian Hall in Calumet, Michigan. Reflecting on a busy year A
s 2018 draws to a close and we look towards 2019 it is natural to reflect on what the previous 12 months have meant for us. As always, one of the most rewarding aspects of my job is the variety of people I am lucky enough to meet both in my role as the local MP for Selwyn and as the Opposition Spokesperson for Finance. As in previous years, I held coffee meetings in various locations around Selwyn during 2018 and Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon and I both advocated strongly for the region on matters relating to road safety and congestion on our state highway network. During August I organised a public information evening to

facilitate discussion around the proposed legislation regarding assisted dying. In October I selected Katelyn Twiss, a Year 12 student from Ellesmere College, as my Youth MP for 2019. Katelyn will be representing Selwyn at the Youth Parliament in Wellington on July 16 and 17, and I am sure she will do a fantastic job. She will also be working with me as an
advocate for local youth during her term as Youth MP which runs from March 1 until August 31 next year. On November 11 a number of community events were held around the region to commemorate 100 years since Armistice Day marked the end of World War One. For many members of our rural communities 2018 has been a difficult year with the ongoing impact of mycoplasma bovis and uncertainty around future Government policies that may affect the farming sector. 2019 is also shaping up to be a busy year with the Government signalling major changes are in store for our education system and the management of our
drinking water. I look forward to discussing these with you and seeking your feedback on the proposed changes. If you would like my assistance on any matter please contact my office in Templeton. The office will re-open again on Monday January 7, with reduced hours that week and will return to regular hours the following week. I would like to wish everyone a happy and safe New Year. 2 litres vanilla ice cream ½ C glacé cherries, roughly chopped ½ C roasted almonds, roughly chopped 50g marshmallows, chopped 1 bar of flake chocolate, broken Chocolate ice cream topping sauce (one that sets) Fresh berries and mint leaves to garnish ■ Leave the vanilla ice cream out of the freezer for 5 -10 minutes so that it softens slightly. ■ Line a large round bowl or a pudding basin with plastic wrap. ■ Place ice cream into a separate large bowl and stir until smooth. Fold in the cherries, almonds, marshmallows and Flake chocolate. ■ Place mixture into prepared bowl and smooth the surface. Cover with foil and place in the freezer for 4-6 hours, or until it

It’s Tyron’s Cup It might not have been exactly beach type weather, but there was a hint of summer fun about yesterday’s Ashburton Trotting Cup at the Ashburton Racecourse. After a weekend of rain and drizzle, the sun did shine ever so slightly just in time for the Ashburton Trotting Club’s Christmas meeting and the Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen-trained Funatthebeach added a bit of brightness to the day for the club’s feature race. Driven confidently by regular stable driver Tim Williams, the talented fouryear-old sat outside favourite Sheriff for the majority of the 3200m event and had enough in store to stave off all challenges to win the $22,000 event. The locally-owned Alta Maestro flew alate, but came up just short in providing a popular victory with his stablemate, Letspendanitetogetha also running home strongly to finish in third position for trainer Robert Dunn. It was a sedate running of the Cup, largely due to the conditions with the winner pacing the two mile journey in
4:01.9 but there were some blistering sections with the final 800 metres in 55.3. Dunn provided a bit of a local success earlier in the day when Spot On one for local owner, Wendy Nordqvist and then repeated the dose when Tyron Bettor’s Ella was victorious for the Neumann family in a strong fillies and mares race. Despite having taken on some strong fields recently Spot On was let go by punters and bolted home in the hands of John Dunn to win at odds of better than $20-to-one. Tyron Bettor’s Ella’s price wasn’t quite as long on the tote, but her win was equally as popular for the Neumann clan who are huge supporters of the racing industry, particularly here in Mid Canterbury. Just prior to that there was a full contingent of locals in the birdcage following the victory of the Simon Adlam-trained To Ri Caitlin. The four-year-old mare by Sportswriter led throughout for local driver Ricky May and did enough to hold off all of her rivals in the run to the line.

The conditions in Wellington were extremely favourable to the batsmen in the first test, with New Zealand making 578 before Kusal Mendis and Angelo Mathews batted for 108 overs to secure a draw. Stead believes New Zealand wickets can sometimes provide too much assistance to batsmen, especially later in test matches. “We have good wickets and I would say they’re probably more batter-friendly than they are in a lot of other places. “We have to make sure that when you turn up, you genuinely want to consider batting first, because you know the wickets will deteriorate enough on the last day that you don’t want to be batting.” “I’m not sure there’s that many grounds in New Zealand where you can honestly say that.” - NZME

Thanks, Jose Paul Pogba has thanked Jose Mourinho for improving him as a player and a person during his time as Manchester United manager. Mourinho signed Pogba for a then-world record fee in August 2016 but the pair had a fractious relationship at Old Trafford before the Portuguese’s dismissal last week. Show a huge success
A huge and successful weekend of show jumping and show hunter action wrapped up at the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds yesterday afternoon. The Ashburton Area ESNZ put on one of their two planned annual shows at the weekend, and while wet weather washed out any hope of competition in their first show, the weather played along this time. The group’s show jumping and show hunter show attracted around 300 horses and ponies and around 190 riders from across the South Island for two action-packed days of competition from training pony classes and low hunters at 60cm, through to horse and pony grand prix classes. Bennett set for Tour return George Bennett is set for a return to the Tour de France, but is unlikely to lead his team at cycling’s biggest race. Bennett was on track for a top 10 finish at the Tour in 2017 when he had to withdraw due to illness, and didn’t ride at the Tour this year, instead opting to race at the Giro d’Italia — where he finished eighth, and the Vuelta a Espana — where he struggled to 35th overall.
He now looks set to have another crack at the Tour in 2019, but will likely have to do so in support of Steven Kruijswijk. Kruijswijk has been named the leader of the newly-branded Team Jumbo-Visma squad for the Tour, with sporting director Merijn Zeeman naming Bennett as one of the riders who will support the Dutch veteran. “There’s support for Steven in the mountains with Robert Ge-
sink and George Bennett. I believe he feels the confidence the team have in him – especially when world class riders like Bennett, Gesink and Tony Martin are your helpers for a Grand Tour,” said Zeeman. Bennett didn’t want to officially confirm his Grand Tour schedule, saying it was “more or less sorted”, but noted the Tour was his main goal.
“That’s definitely the main thing for me – that’s the one I want to do the most,” Bennett said. However, Bennett might have relinquished his role as leader or co-leader in some of the biggest races, after the superb performances of two of his team-mates. Kruijswijk had the best year of his career, finishing fifth at the Tour and fourth at the Vuelta, while Primoz Roglic was one of
the best riders in the world, finishing fourth at the Tour and winning three World Tour stage races. Bennett is aiming to ride at two Grand Tours — likely the Tour and the Vuelta — but knows he needs to find the right balance to succeed in both. Bennett will start his season next month at the national championships in Napier, before riding the Tour Down Under in Australia.
