An incredibly bright spotlight has been shining on New Zealand’s culture around the treatment of women this week and a Mid Canterbury family violence worker has a simple message – if you are not part of the problem, then be part of the solution. British backpacker Grace Millane was believed to have been murdered earlier this month, an incident that has brought nation-

wide attention to the treatment of women in this country. Safer Families Ashburton family violence co-ordinator, Anna Arrowsmith, said that while what has happened is heart-breaking, the response has been incredible. “There has been a real presence on Facebook of men saying this is our problem to fix,” she said. “It goes way back and just sums up how men now have to back other men to respect women.” Arrowsmith said things as sim-

ple of cat-calling and wolf-whistling are simple ways of disrespecting women. “It is about men not being bystanders,” she said. “We have the worst rates of intimate partner violence and there have already been 14 women killed in New Zealand this year. “I just think that New Zealand needs a shift in attitude, if you are not part of the problem, then be part of the solution.” Stats from the police for charg-

es, diversion and court action for assault, attempted murder, harassment and threatening behaviour, manslaughter and driving causing death and murder are all dominated by male offenders in the Mid/South Canterbury area. From July 2014 to October 2018, 81.4 per cent of the above crimes were committed by males, with the most being aged between 20 and 24, with 356 crimes in that period. The next worst age group for

offending was 25 to 29, with 277 offences. A majority of the victims are known to the offenders, with 267 crimes being as recorded against a partner, 307 another relative and 204 ex-partners. Arrowsmith said that unfortunately statistics did not often give a full picture of what was going on. “Often it is just the tip of the iceberg, that is only the reported violence,” she said.

Office Spot first new postal agency By Sue NewmaN

Ashburton’s central town post office might be slated for closure, but postal services in town will remain unchanged, says Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon. Last month NZ Post announced it would be closing 79 post offices around New Zealand, including Ashburton. At that time the postal organisation could not confirm how services would be provided when the closure came into effect, but a spokesperson said yesterday that it had already partnered with one business and negotiations were underway with another in a second location. Office Spot has opened a postal centre in its East Street business offering the full range of postal services, but a NZ Post spokesperson said the organisation was not yet in a position to confirm the second location. “We will keep you and the community updated as soon as this changes. NZ Post would like to reassure the Ashburton community that we are committed to offering postal services in Ashburton, and this will continue,” the spokesperson said. Falloon said he had initial concerns that the transfer of services to an agency could see some of the current services disappear, but said he had been assured nothing would change. “On Thursday I questioned the chief executive and chairperson of NZ Post and received an assurance that we would not see a loss of services in Ashburton. Although they claimed that in many cases customers see no change at all with the same premises being used. In Ashburton we will, however, the new outlet will be operated within 400 metres of the current post office in East Street,” Falloon said.

Andrew Falloon With fellow National MP Melissa Lee, Falloon said he had successfully pushed for NZ Post to front up to the Parliamentary Select Committee to answer questions about the closures and what services would be provided by a new ‘partnership’ store. While the closure of the post office was disappointing, Falloon said it was good to have assurances about the continuation of services. “I’ll be making sure they follow through on the commitments they’ve given,” he said Once NZ Post relocates from the East Street building, Kiwibank will follow to a new, standalone location. A media spokesperson for Kiwibank said it was difficult to put a timeframe on the move; in some parts of the country this had happened quite quickly as part of the NZPost move to an agency and in others it had taken up to a year. “We want to make the best possible decision with regard to foot traffic, convenience and safety and until the move happens it will just be business as usual,” the spokesperson said.

Ashburton Library goes hi-tech By Sue NewmaN

It is now possible to visit Ashburton’s public library, borrow your books and have absolutely no human contact. While that might not be every one’s choice in book borrowing, the installation of two selfcheckout stations in the library now make that possible. The stations were activated yesterday along with two book return stations and they are the first arrivals in what will become a cluster of self-checkout and return stations, a service that is now commonplace in many libraries. In January Ashburton’s dis-

trict councillors voted to spend $147,000 over two years on the new system which will be fully relocatable to the new district library to be built in Baring Square east. Ahead of the new checkout installation every book in the library was tagged with a radio frequency identification code. During the first hours the system went live, library users were keen to swipe their cards and issue their own books. “It’s absolutely awesome and really easy to use,” one woman said. Others were happy to test the new system with staff standing alongside.

The return system is just as simple, requiring borrowers to put their books on a shelf, touch a screen and follow the prompts. For mum Jacqui Giller, the new system is familiar territory. Home to visit family in Ashburton, she and children Arthur and Maude had already chalked up plenty of self-checkout experience in their Christchurch library. The new system now gives library users the option of doing all their transactions – including renewing books and paying fines – at the self-checkout machines, or continuing with the traditional face-to-face, over-the-counter service.

With a community lunch on the calendar, there’s no need for anyone in the Ashburton District to be alone on Christmas Day, says event organiser Ann Allott. The community lunch generally attracts around 150 diners who become part of the largest ‘family’ gathering in town. “We’d hate to see anyone sitting at home alone staring at four walls on Christmas Day, so if you haven’t got your own family then come along and join our big family,” Allott said. For years she’s been the driving force behind the district’s Christmas community lunch and with her team of regular volunteers they have a formula for the event that runs like a well-oiled machine. An invitation to the community to attend has been circulating for several weeks and registrations close today, however, no-one will ever be turned away if they just turn up on the day, she said. Registration is important though because it ensures the catering team has plenty of food for everyone. “Most of the people who come along are people living on their own or the elderly, but we do get plenty of families who might be on their own. We cater for everyone.” Volunteers are key to ensuring the event runs like clockwork and while many return year after year, new recruits are always welcome,

The potential of taking on the job full time is not one Emery said he has considered yet, with a position with the armed offenders squad keeping him tied down to within half an hour of Christchurch central long term. “But who knows, things could always change,” he said.

Christmas bonus for Cancer Society Ashburton Intermediate’s biannual market day has delivered an early Christmas present for the Cancer Society. Through money raised on the day, students from the school were able to donate a cheque of $3000 to the Cancer Society on Wednesday. Student Anastasia Skilling, who was a CEO for the event, said it was great to have a large crowd from the community supporting the day, and then to be able to support the Cancer Society because of that. The Cancer Society, after discussion with the girls, will put the money towards supporting families who need transport and childcare when a parent is needing treatment.

Ashburton’s mayor Donna Favel intends to go against the wishes of her councillors and sign a local government declaration on climate change. When the climate change declaration was first discussed by Favel and her councillors in August 2017 she said she wanted to add her name to the growing number of mayoral signatories. Her councillors weren’t keen, saying they wanted more information. They were also concerned signing that in signing the decla-

ration there could be significant financial implications. Rather than be part of a national document they wanted a local climate change policy prepared, one that was specific to the Ashburton District. When it was put to the vote only four councillors backed Favel’s request. At that point, she reminded councillors that she could sign the document on her own account if she so desired. Since then a climate change workshop has been held and Favel has continued to report back to councillors her discussions on the

issue with other mayors and local government officials. At yesterday’s council meeting she told councillors she had decided she would now be signing the declaration. Signing was about local government leaders standing together, she said. There were compelling reasons to start taking the issue of climate change seriously and that the council had taken a ‘meandering path’ to get to where it was today on the issue, Favel said. The council is working on its own climate change policy.

The merry sounds of silver have been serenading the streets of Ashburton thanks to the Ashburton Silver Band. The band have been out collecting on the streets of Ashburton this month, on Monday and Wednesday evenings, as well as performing at resthomes and the MSA and RSA, chairman Gavin Hunt said. “This year and last year we have received a lot of support from the public which we really appreciate,” he said. “We unfortunately can’t cover all of the town, but we try to do as much as we can.” The band will be out on their truck in the streets twice before Christmas, next Monday and Wednesday evening. Teachers at Ashburton College have banded together to help bring some extra Christmas cheer to the community this festive season. Spearheaded by teacher Greta Hampton, the teachers have each contributed three food items and a Christmas present to be donated to the Salvation Army. “It’s the first year we have done

this and it is really cool to be able to do something good for the community,” she said. The teachers were asked to donate essentials as well as Christmas treats, while aiming for a range of presents across all age groups. The Salvation Army’s Mike Allwright said the donations would be a massive boost ahead of the Christmas period as they have already had 100 families ask for assistance.

Christmas injuries prompt a warning from ACC Slipping on rugs while carrying too many presents, bailing while taking a new bike for its first spin and getting squashed by falling Christmas trees all come with a friendly warning from ACC. With 11 days until Christmas, ACC is releasing a series of “fun videos” online featuring odd Christmas injuries to avoid. During the summer holidays people tend to relax and change their regular routine and while some might say that’s how accidents happen, the truth is that most injuries are preventable, ACC’s head of injury prevention Isaac Carlson said. Last year more than 4000 New Zealanders were injured on Christmas Day alone, with 2530 head collisions, 132 Xmas tree injures and 1190 bike accidents over the season accounting for $3500,000 worth of ACC claims. A further 28 people were hurt while cooking or barbecuing, and 22 were injured cleaning the house before or after Christmas Day visits from friends and family. “The perils of falling Christmas trees, hanging the fairy lights and flying wine corks play a starring role in the video series because we know people can probably relate

Shovel sought in Millane murder found The shovel sought by police in relation to the Grace Millane murder has been found. Detective Inspector Scott Beard announced yesterday that the item was recovered by detectives earlier yesterday, as a result of the continued examination of CCTV footage. It was located and seized in the central West Auckland area. “Police would like to thank those members of the public who called the 0800 number with various sightings of similar items,” he said. On Tuesday, police issued a public appeal for anyone who may

have found the shovel, described as a ‘Atlas Trade Hardwood Long Handle Round Mouth Shovel’, anytime after Monday, December 3. “At this point we don’t know where this item is. It could be anywhere between the Scenic Drive and central Auckland areas. “Someone may have come across it, picked it up and taken it home. We need to speak to that person or anyone who has seen it,” they said at the time. Yesterday police announced that Millane’s body had been formally identified and had been returned to her family. Detective Beard said work con-

tinued to piece together exactly what happened to Millane, as police build a timeline of the circumstances. Grace’s father, David Millane, later issued a statement thanking police and the New Zealand public for their support. “After the disappearance of Grace on December 1, 2018 our whole world turned upside down,” he said. “I arrived in Auckland on Friday December 7, followed by my brother Martin on Saturday 8th. From that very first moment we have been astounded by the level of concern, sympathy and selfless

help from every person we have met. “Auckland Police have carried out the most concise, stringent and thorough investigation. The team, consisting at times of over 24 officers have worked arduous long hours without a day off, little sleep or rest in helping to resolve this heinous crime.” David Millane also said he hoped what happened to his daughter “will not deter even one person from venturing out into the world and discovering their own OE”. He said the family would be returning Grace’s body to the UK this

weekend, after many vigils were held around the country. Grace Millane was last seen alive on December 1, the day before her 22nd birthday. Her body was eventually found in bush on the side of Scenic Dr in the Waitakere Ranges on Sunday. The accused 26-year-old man was arrested and charged with her murder, appearing in court on Monday. Millane, of Essex, who recently graduated from university, came to New Zealand as part of a year-long solo OE. She arrived in Auckland just days before she was killed. – NZME

Star mistreated, abused Sophia Bush has spoken out about the “abuse” and “mistreatment” she suffered on the set of her hit US TV show Chicago PD. The 36-year-old portrayed Detective Erin Lindsay on the drama series, but quit, departing the series in May 2017 after the Season 4 finale despite having signed a seven-season deal. She told the New York Post: “I quit because, what I’ve learned is I’ve been so programmed to be a good girl and to be a workhorse and be a tugboat that I have always prioritised tugging the ship for the crew, for the show, for the group, ahead of my own health.”

May gone after Brexit British Prime Minister Theresa May pledged she won’t lead the Tories into the next election as she battles to quell a Brexit revolt. In an emotional final plea to MPs, May acknowledged widespread unrest with her Brexit strategy but appealed for more time to get a settlement with the EU. She is said to have left some politicians in tears as she told the gathering in a Commons committee room that she will bow out gracefully once that task is complete. May said she would stand down before the next election, after she has steered Brexit through.

“In my heart I would like to lead the party into the next election, but I accept that won’t happen,” she said. When the behind-closeddoors session is over, the 317 Tories are due to start voting in the no-confidence contest. May refused to put an exact date on when she will stand down, despite calls for her to go as soon as Britain formally leaves the EU. Earlier, MP Graham Brady said the threshold of 48 letters from lawmakers needed to trigger a leadership vote had been reached. Brady chairs the party committee that oversees leadership contests.

Many lawmakers have been growing angry with May over her handling of Brexit. If she loses the vote of party legislators, May must step down. If she wins, she can’t be challenged again for a year. All 315 Tory legislators can vote on the confidence motion. May needs 158 votes to win. If she loses, she must resign and a party leadership contest is held in which she is barred from running. All other Conservative lawmakers can run. Conservative leadership contests have two parts. After candidates come forward, Conservative lawmak-

ers vote first. The candidate with lowest number of votes drops out and voting continues until there are two contenders left. The final two candidates are put to a vote of the full party membership across the country. In the last leadership contest in 2016, members never got to vote because all the candidates dropped out but one: May. May remains Prime Minister and party leader until a replacement is chosen. The winner of the vote becomes Conservative leader and prime minister, without the need for a national election. - PA

Lavigne releases album Avril Lavigne has announced the date for her first new album in five years following a battle with Lyme disease. The Canadian singer, 34, took a break from performing after being struck down with the debilitating illness which can leave sufferers exhausted. Lavigne announced her intention to return in September, when she released a new song. Lavigne released a second track titled Tell Me It’s Over and has now revealed the date for her next album. Head Above Water will be released on February 15 2019.

You want ecstasy with that? A fast-food worker in the US has been arrested for lacing a 4-year-old child’s hamburger with ecstasy, which the boy thought was candy. According to police, the boy’s 11-year-old sister found the pill between the buns of the Sonix Drive-In kids meal burger in Texas on Wednesday night.

“When she opened the wrapping, she noticed a pill. Being an 11-year-old, she asked her parents if this was candy,” Taylor Chief of Police Henry Fluck told ABC 13. The parents took the meal to the police station where a lab samples revealed that the burger tested positive for ecstasy.

Officers arrested manager, 30-year-old Tanisha Dancer, along with two workers, 35-year-old Jonathan Roberson and 22-year-old Jose Molina. Dancer was allegedly caught with three more pills in her possession and was then also charged with delivery of a controlled substance,

possession of a controlled substance and endangering a child. The employee has since been fired. Robertson and Molina were also charged with possession of marijuana. Police also arrested Robertson for having four outstanding warrants. - PA

Knightley gets an OBE British actress Keira Knightley will receive an OBE for her services to drama and charity. Knightley, who has starred in several blockbuster films since her breakthrough role in Bend It Like Beckham more than 15 years ago, was named in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours list in the UK. Summer is knocking on the door (well it should be), which means it’s now the perfect time to start planting capsicums in your garden. Capsicums, known in other countries as sweet bell peppers, are surprisingly easy to grow. Their main need is for a warm sunny environment. Once you’ve ticked off that, they’re really plant-and-forget veges – requiring little maintenance. But what I really love about capsicums is the way they change their colour as they ripen – showing off their kaleidoscope of colour. They all start out green and then change colour to yellow, then orange, and lastly red. And the longer they’re on the plant, the

sweeter they will become. Another great thing about capsicums is that they cope well in confined spaces with little watering. This means they thrive well in a pot. Planting them in a pot also allows you to shift them around to maximise the sun, and also really show them off to your friends and curious neighbours. Grab your capsicum seedlings from our online shop and have them delivered direct to your door. We guarantee satisfaction, and if you’re not entirely happy with your plants, we will replace them. If you’re not already familiar with Awapuni, we strive to reduce the plastic we use. Our seedlings come wrapped in newspaper and our orders get sent out in recycled cardboard boxes. Capsicums like similar growing conditions to your tomatoes. They like a warm, sunny, sheltered and welldrained spot. Before planting, prepare your soil by digging in some compost, sheep pallets or general fertiliser. The richer the soil, the more generous your plant will be with its crop. Once you’ve prepared your ideal

capsicum planting spot, dig holes about 3cm deep, spacing them 40cm apart. Place the seedlings inside and lightly pack down with soil. I like to stake my seedlings at this point. ‘If you stake it, they will grow’ is my positive-thinking attitude to capsicum growing. Add mulch to help keep the weeds down. Newspaper covered with pea straw can also work really well. And watch out for slugs, who are also big fans of capsicums. Lay down some bait or an organic option is to check out our beer bait, which you can make at home. From here, keep them watered (more so for those in pots) and give them a feed of liquid fertiliser every fortnight to ensure a bumper crop. But try not to water the leaves of your capsicums, as this can encourage disease. In two to three months you can start harvesting your capsicums. Some cooks may say a watched pot never boils; well I say a capsicum never ripens when you check it every day. Well of course they do - but they quickly become the most inspected plant in my vege garden, while I’m waiting for them to really ripen up.

ismo have confirmed production of the most expensive and exclusive Nissan GT-R ever will take place in 2019. Designed in collaboration with Nissan, Nismo and Italdesign, the GT-R50 is described as the ‘the ultimate expression of the GT-R’. The order book is now officially open for the GT-R50 with production limited to 50 vehicles. Pricing will start at 900,000 euros (approximately $1,493,000) before taxes and an almost endless list of options or bespoke possibilities. Nismo have confirmed that customers can expect the car’s exterior to be virtually unchanged from the prototype shown in July at the Goodwood Festival of Speed earlier year. Nissan collaborated with Italy-based Italdesign to create the model which commemorates the 50th anniversary of the GT-R production in 2019. The GT-R50 is based on the Nissan GT-R Nismo and will feature the same hand-built, 3.8-litre twin-turbo V6 engine producing 441kW of power and 652Nm of torque. While the prototype vehicle was finished in a special gray with gold accents, customers will be able to specify their preferred colour combinations for the production version. “The reaction from Nissan fans around the world – and potential customers of the GT-R50 – has greatly exceeded our expectations,” said global sports car program director at Nissan, Bob Laishley. “These 50 cars will be rolling tributes to Nissan’s engineering leadership and rich sports car heritage for a long time to come.”

Uncompromising purity

ith development of its new V12 progressing apace the time is right to reveal some closely guarded secrets of the Aston Martin Valkyrie’s extraordinary powerplant. Developed in conjunction with longtime technical partner Cosworth, the new V12 had to satisfy a simple, yet extraordinary brief: to create the ultimate expression of the internal combustion engine. The programme called for a normally aspirated engine from the very beginning, for while turbocharging has absolutely come of age and offers significant and widespread benefits – especially in a road application – the greatest driver’s car of the modern era demands an internal combustion engine that sits at the absolute pinnacle for performance, excitement and emotion. This means the uncompromising purity of natural aspiration. The resulting engine is an absolute masterpiece.

Displacing 6.5-litres the 65° V12 sets exceptional new standards for maximum rpm and specific output with a certified peak power output of 1000bhp (or 153.8 bhp-per-litre) at a mind-blowing 10,500rpm, before continuing on to a maximum rpm figure of 11,100: figures that are unprecedented for a naturallyaspirated, emissions-compliant road car application. Peak torque is 740Nm at 7,000rpm. With these peak outputs purely delivered by the ICE (Internal Combustion Engine), Aston Martin Valkyrie’s performance figures will be further boosted by a battery hybrid system, details of which will be revealed later in the development programme. Cosworth’s F1 expertise is also evidenced in the Aston Martin Valkyrie engine’s weight, which also set new standards. The engine is a fully stressed element of the car (remove the engine and there is nothing joining the front wheels to the back!) .

A story that goes full circle Bernard Egan MOTORING

hat which was first shall be last. And that which was last shall be first. And that’s what this story – the last for 2018 – is about. Well, sort of. The first story for this year and this the last story for 2018 have something in common – a fabulous book called We had one of Those! Just to recant, written by Stephen Barnett, the book was a gift to this writer last Christmas. Beautifully illustrated using sales brochure artwork, the book recounts New Zealand motoring history covering the period from 1950 through to 1970. The author is a writer and editor who has an obvious enthusiasm for old vehicles. Marques from around the world are featured and the book provides a nostalgic look at the cars we saw or drove back then, but which are not seen so often these days. Back in January this writer made a prediction – “We had one of Those is a much appreciated gift which is going to go on giving for a long time as descriptions and pictures of various cars bring back many pleasant memories”. A prediction which has proved correct. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve picked up We had one of Those and enjoyed browsing through it. And I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve noticed something not previously spotted and the number of times a new fact has been discovered. Others who have seen the book have also found it fascinating, so I was intrigued when Noel Lowe mentioned the book to me recently. Not my copy, but one he saw in a bookshop. And in fact the second version – or if you like in motoring terms the Mark Two model. It’s a book he’s hoping won’t be in the bookshop for too much longer. Santa or maybe Audrey please take note! Or a hint ... Take it from who knows. this book is a perfect gift and we know Noel’s been a good boy so he deserves it. All the content of the book appeals to Noel, but it has particular appeal because it features an Austin A40 Devon. Noel’s own first car was an Austin A40 Devon, which he bought from Autolines. The salesman at the time was Ray Hungerford and the first owner was local identity Frank McIntosh, of Tekau Knitwear fame. Noel thinks Frank McIntosh actually bought the car for his daughters. What prompted Noel to buy his Austin?

He liked the look of that model and at about £500 it fitted his budget back in the late 1950s. “My Austin A40 Devon was a really good reliable car,” said Noel. During Noel’s ownership the motor had some work done on it, and Noel tinkered with it too. The A40 Devon, which was the first postwar saloon produced by Austin, featured a mix of old and new technologies. It had a 1200cc four-cylinder motor and column change gearshift. After his tinkering Noel says it would get up to a very respectable speed especially – as he puts it – on a downward gradient with a tail wind. Noel kept the car until about 1964, the year he and Audrey got married. They then had a Mini, which cost around £670. Noel has always liked vehicles and he’s had a few for both for farm and personal use. All good, some better than others, but his first car the Austin A40 Devon has always stuck in his mind. Hopefully in the first story for next year we can report that Father Christmas has been good to Noel, which means in the case of this story first has become last and a last will become first.

hank goodness our ever obliging sub-editor Steve does not perform performance reviews! He set a task recently to do some investigation around the model name adopted by Chevrolet for their Corvettes. Observant Steve noticed sometimes these iconic American sports cars are defined as a Sting Ray (two words) and other times as a Stingray (single word) and he felt we – or more particularly I – should find out why. At this stage if Steve does decide to conduct a performance review requiring an update hopefully he’ll accept the response “work in progress”.

Endura a stunner

Females on the GIXXER grid

he fledgling GIXXER Cup class of motorcycle road-racing picked up where it left off in its inaugural season last year, heralding the start of the 2018-19 season with hot race action on the track an unbridled camaraderie off it. What these 150cc bikes and novice young riders lack in horsepower and experience, they more than make up for in the thrill stakes and so it proved as the three-round 2018 Suzuki Series kicked off at Taupo’s Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park last Sunday. Reserved for riders aged between 14 and 21, the GIXXER Cup – with the tagline Growing Future Champions – is a production racing class that provides a springboard towards a successful racing future at higher levels. All riders are on board identical 150cc Suzuki GSX150F model bikes, making it a level playing field and it is considered an ideal nursery ground for grooming and developing future road-racing stars. The young riders responded to the GIXXER Cup challenge at Taupo and the racing was extremely tight, dominated by several of last season’s GIXXER Cup stars, sharing the track with a dozen or more fresh faces. Hamilton’s Jesse Stroud and Taupiri’s Zak Fuller locked handlebars at the front of the pack, and in the end it was Stroud who won the first of the two GIXXER Cup races, crossing the line just ahead of Fuller, although this finish order was reversed in race two.

Two young women have joined the GIXXER Cup for the first time this season, adding to the widespread appeal of the class, Palmerston North’s Sarah Humphrey and Whanganui’s Lucy Dowman relishing the opportunity to mix it with the boys. The 18-year-old Humphrey, a recent school-leaver who now works at Foodstuffs New Zealand, said she has always had a passion for motorsport in general and always wanted to ride a motorbike. “Last year I saw the GIXXER Cup and saw there were no females in it, so thought ‘yep, that’s for me’. So, on January this year I hopped on a bike for the first time and I haven’t looked back. “I had two small crashes on Saturday and I’m a bit sore now, but the injuries are small and it’s nothing that will stop me.” Dowman (17) said she was encouraged to tackle the GIXXER Cup by the Suzuki dealership in Whanganui and she and her brother, Michael Dowman, both decided to give it a go. There is little time for anyone to catch their breath because more drama and excitement can be expected at round two at Manfeild Circuit Chris Amon this coming weekend. The popular three-round summer series will have its traditional public street race spectacular to wrap it all up on Boxing Day around Whanganui’s famous Cemetery Circuit.

Name suppression a necessary evil T

here’s a growing argument around the country around the laws and restrictions when it comes to court-enforced name suppressions and their continued place in our justice system. It’s an integral part of the court process and has been for a very long time, but the combination of social media, online search engines and almost everyone having some form of digital footprint is, without doubt, muddying the waters. By law name suppression may be enforced if it is believed that naming a defendant may cause extreme hardship to the defendant or people connected with

them, if it might cast suspicion on another person, endanger someone’s safety, prejudice the maintenance of the law or the security or defence of New Zealand and, most importantly, create a real risk of prejudicing a fair trial. And a fair trial is not just for the defendant, it’s for all the involved parties.

Name suppression is there for a very good reason and should be adhered too, without fail each and every time. The death of British backpacker, Grace Millane, and the arrest of her accused killer, has seen laws around name suppression become almost laughable this week. Media outlets around the country have pushed things right to the very edge by telling readers everything they can about the accused without actually naming him. Yesterday, Google went a step further and actually did name him. They didn’t mean to, but they

did – in a bulk email sent out to subscribers of one of their services. Yesterday we were also told that the accused’s name had been a trending topic in search engines. Fairfax told us their name had been searched more than 100,000 times, while NZ Herald told us it was more than 50,000. So, with all those combined, plus the odd idiot who decided to use various forms of social media to splatter the name about the place, there’s a good chance a huge amount of the population knows who he is. What that means for any forthcoming court case in relation to

the killing will be interesting to say the least. Should the accusations levelled against the accused be true, the last thing anyone wants is the opportunity for the defence team to use a breach of name suppression to work in their favour. New Zealand is a small country. Word does spread pretty fast and, as a country which seems to yearn for information, it’s easy to see why there have been so many inquisitive minds actively searching for the answer. The problem is, they shouldn’t be able to find it. Suppression is in place for a reason and as a nation we should be adhering to it.

Kids in sport stay out of trouble I

t’s an old saying but a good one. But for a group of passionate locals it goes further than that. It’s about community, pride and mana. A committee has been formed and the wheels are in motion. The end goal, secondary schools that the communities, parents and students can be proud of. The first stop on the bus trip to that goal is the first 15 for this group of locals. They are incredibly passionate about this journey! “I don’t want to hear our kids or any others calling it Trash Coll ever again,” one of them told me. They want Under 15 to Under 18 rugby to be all about playing for the college sides. They want the best players in our region, including those at Mt Hutt College, playing for the Under 15s, Girls, 2nd 15 or 1st 15 sides. They also want the communities support and buy in. They want to see ex-first 15

They don’t want local players looking at other schools so they can further their opportunities. They want all the locals striving to play for the college side and getting noticed from there, because the side is playing such good footy. They have a coaching team (to be announced officially on Monday) who are Old School and have been there and done that on the paddock. They will command respect! It’s good stuff! The Press Cup is an amazing opportunity for any young rugby player. Not only do they get to measure up against some of the best players in the country in their age bracket. They also have the opportunity press their own claims on further honours and maybe a career in the sport. At the very least they will be able to say, I played against that bloke, when they are sitting down watching an All Blacks game in the future. I think, for this group of pas-

players on the sidelines watching their former sides perform with credit and hopefully knocking over some of the big boys in the Press Cup. They have been in talks with fitness advisors and want all eligible kids to turn up for some fitness testing on Saturday, December 22. For the group, it’s all about planning well and having clear goals. They don’t want to interfere with summer sports but they want their players working on their rugby fitness during the summer months. They realise they aren’t going to be the biggest side in the Press Cup, but they want a super fit side, that does the basics well, playing with pride and passion.

Appster failures ‘devastated’ The Gen Z bosses of an Aussie app developer once hailed as “the next Apple” say they are absolutely devastated after the company collapsed into liquidation. Appster, founded by Auckland-born Josiah Humphrey and Melbourne teen Mark McDonald in 2011 using just $3000 in savings, made headlines over the years for its rapid growth and fairytale story of two childhood mates making it big in Silicon Valley. The duo, now 26 and 27, were named in the Forbes 30 Under 30 Rich List in 2017 with an estimated net worth of $US43 million ($62.7m). At its peak Appster employed 350 staff across four international offices and was pulling in more than $US19m in revenue. Things came crashing down last week, however, with the company placed into voluntary liquidation following a dramatic deterioration of its financial position. Some clients complained of being left tens of thousands of dollars out of pocket for unfin-

ished, poor-quality apps. In an email interview, Humphrey said he and McDonald were “absolutely devastated to be in this position”. “It is the most difficult thing we’ve ever had to come to a decision on,” he said. “Surprisingly we were in one of best cash positions the business had been in just four months ago but things spiralled out of control very quickly. “We missed forecasted sales targets by around 50 per cent four months in a row. With expenses of roughly $1m a month our cash reserves were depleted very rapidly despite attempting cost reductions.” Humphrey said another contributing factor to the collapse was the recent Tech Mahindra court ruling with the Australian Taxation Office that changed how money was taxed between Australia and India. Appster was left “retrospectively paying the last four years of the new tax which wiped out our

arket volatility continued to feature this week, with global share markets registering big swings in either direction. Investors are grappling with a range of worries including flaring geopolitical tensions and slowing global growth. The local NZX 50 has held up relatively well when compared to markets offshore. At the time of writing, the local benchmark is up 4.1 per cent for the year, but remains 6.9 per cent below its 52 week high reached on September 24. In Australia, the ASX 200 slumped to a two-year low at the start of the week but managed to bounce off its lows as the week progressed. The Australian benchmark is off 6.5 per cent for the year, while China’s Shanghai Composite has tumbled 21.3 per cent. After a tough start to the week, US stocks rose Wednesday, as the outlook for trade took a positive turn. Trump tweeted “Very productive conversations going on with China! Watch for some important announcements!” Reports have suggested China has agreed to cut tariffs on imported American cars to 15 per cent from 40 per cent, potentially a sign of a cooling trade war. Investors, however, remain cautious about a broader deal. Markets also reacted positively to the news that Canada granted bail to detained Huawei Chief Financial Officer, Meng Wanzhou, who was apprehended last week.

The decision by the court in Vancouver came as Donald Trump said he would intervene in the case if it would serve national security interests or help close a trade deal with China. It also follows news that the former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig has been detained in China. Kovrig had previously served as political lead for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s 2016 visit to Hong Kong. Trudeau told reporters the Government took news of the detention very seriously. This week saw Prime Minister Theresa May survive a confidence vote from her Conservative Party, however, more than a third of lawmakers said she is no longer the right leader to implement Britain’s exit from the European Union. May is said to have told her party, she won’t run in the next election. The British pound rallied from a 20-month low after the vote. Back home, shares of Trade Me rose to an all-time high after receiving a formal takeover offer from Apax Partners to acquire 100 per cent of its shares for $6.45 per share (a 5 cent increase on its original bid). The deal, which is subject to

shareholder and court approval, has been unanimously supported by TME’s board. A key condition of the takeover is that the scheme of arrangement is approved by shareholders at a meeting scheduled for April. CEO Jon MacDonald said he will continue with the company beyond 2018 to ensure continued momentum, after initially planning to step down in December. Restaurant Brands announced it is bringing the Taco Bell brand to both New Zealand and New South Wales in Australia, commencing in 2019. Restaurant Brands plans to open more than 60 new restaurants between 1 January 2019 and 30 June 2024. Across the ditch, Syndey’s property slump has reached a new milestone, with values now fallen further than the late 1980’s when Australia was on the cusp of entering its last recession. Average Sydney homes have fallen 10.1 per cent since their 2017 peak. That surpasses the top-tobottom decline of 9.6 per cent recorded between 1989 and 1991. The decline in Sydney house prices is accelerating as tighter mortgage lending standards by the banks limit the amount people can borrow and as nervous buyers sit on the sidelines. Tornado Valley ‘beatable’ By Michael Guerin Trainer John Dickie is full of honesty and hope heading into the A$150,000 Inter Dominion Trotting Final with Speeding Spur. Because while the Kiwi trainer is honest enough to admit his millionaire trotter may have lost his sheer speed, he is also hopeful his stamina may snare him one of the most important races of Dickie’s career. Dickie trains the now sevenyear-old with his son Josh and after two wins in his three heats of the series Speeding Spur is the clear second favourite for the 2760m mobile at Melton tomorrow night. He has the advantage of the ace and at his peak of two or three years ago would be a dominant favourite but that honour instead lies with Tornado Valley, who was unbeaten in his heats. Dickie admits that is fair. “On their form in this series Tornado Valley has looked the best horse. “But that doesn’t mean we can’t beat him,” says Dickie. “He is faster than us, which is how he beat us in the sprint heat at Ballarat last week. “Our fella doesn’t have that sub-27 second quarter (400m) in him like he used to and that makes it hard to beat Tornado Valley. “But the distance and the draw helps us. “If we can hold the lead Josh (driver) will have options.” The most logical of those would be making Tornado Valley work to get the lead and hope he gets fired up and leaves himself vulnerable at the end of a hard 2760m for Speeding Spur to grab him. The daughter of Pins ran on well late in the piece to run down her opposition and win by half-a-length over Monkey Shoulder. Connections of horses racing in Victoria will be the beneficiaries of an additional A$40 million in prize money due to be rolled out in the new year. The extra money follows a commitment from the recently returned Victorian Labor government to support the racing industry to the tune of $33 million. Racing Victoria has committed to boosting the package beyond $40 million over the next two years. The David and Emma-Lee Browne-trained gelding made a winning return to his homeland after a disappointing unplaced run in Melbourne last month. “The race wasn’t really run to suit him in Australia, it was one of those races that just didn’t go to plan,” Emma-Lee Browne said. “He travels really well, he got back in great order, so it was good to see him back (in winning form).” Browne has been happy with how the Mastercraftsman seven-year-old has been working and is looking forward to her charge reuniting with last-start

winning jockey, Opie Bosson. “He’s trained on fairly well and he’ll probably strip a little fitter after having that run. “We are really happy with him,” she said. “It will be good to have Opie Bosson back on after winning last start on him. “Barrier four will suit and he’ll be in a position to go wherever he wants depending on the speed. “There looks to be plenty of speed in the race, so he should be able to get a nice run from there.” Browne said there are no set plans for Stratocaster after Saturday, but she would like to head towards the Wellington Cup carnival with the seven-year-old. “We’ll just run on Saturday and see where we are at as far as distance goes. “We’ll hopefully have a go at some of the races over the Christ-

Afghanistan Football Federation president Keramuudin Karim and four other senior officials have provisionally been banned over allegations they sexually assaulted members of their women’s national team. Karim and his colleagues are already under investigation in Afghanistan and have been provisionally suspended by FIFA’s ethics committee. Winners and losers from funding announcement High Performance Sport New Zealand (HPSNZ) announced a $36 million investment programme for New Zealand sport in 2019. The investments will help New Zealand’s sporting organisations in the areas of high performance leadership, coaching, international competition, training camps, pathway development, and equipment and operations. The funding allocations for each of the sports were based on four criteria: past performance, future potential, quality of the individual sport’s high performance programme, and campaigns and aspects of the individual sport context.

WINNERS Snow sports Snow sports was the biggest winner, receiving an increase in investment of $250k to $2.25m. This boost follows New Zea-

land’s most successful Winter Olympics ever, after teenagers Zoi Sadowski-Synnott (women’s snowboarding big air) and Nico Porteous (men’s ski halfpipe) both took home bronze in Pyeongchang – exceeding HPSNZ’s medal target of one. New Zealand had previously collected only one Winter Olympic medal, a silver at the 1992 Games. Snow sports was also elevated from a targeted sport to a tier two sport. Canoeing Canoe sports also received a major investment boost, with an increase of $150k to $1.9m following another successful World Championships. New Zealand celebrated its finest ever medal haul at the ICF Canoe Sprint and Para Canoe World Championships this year, with supreme Halberg Award winner Lisa Carrington leading the way. Canoe Racing was elevated from tier two to tier one.

AB player exodus now alarming

Steve Hansen will make an announcement on his future as All Blacks coach beyond next year’s Rugby World Cup at 9am this morning. For the best part of the last 18 months, the odds have been short to the point of being almost closed, that he will be standing down. He said in an interview before the Lions tour in 2017 that he was almost certain he wouldn’t be the All Blacks head coach after the 2019 World Cup. He extended his contract in early 2017 through to 2019 but that would be it he said – he wouldn’t be entering negotiations before the tournament in Japan. But as much as it has appeared to be a fait accompli, Hansen has never quite shut the door on the prospect of staying on. There have also been a number of significant statements made in the past that have to be considered in plotting the map of the future. The day after the All Blacks won the 2015 World Cup Hansen announced he was 90 per cent certain he’d be moving on after the Lions tour in 2017. Perhaps that was a negotiating ploy to go public about his probable exit at a time when his star could not have been shining brighter, but then he had argued consistently that the All Blacks coach should not be contracted in sync with World Cup cycles. His belief is that the World Cup should not be the ultimate and in essence only means of evaluating a coaching tenure and that change should come mid-cycle. It’s a battle he has won as NZR have told him, it is believed, that there is a two-year extension on the table if he wants it to take him through to 2021 – presumably with the intention of handing over control two years before the 2023 World Cup. So the picture now remains as conflicted and as unpredictable as it has since the day after the last World Cup final, to everyone that is accept Hansen. He said after the All Blacks last match this year against Italy in Rome that he has been sure of his plan for months. That in itself provides no clue about his intention and nor does the announcement by Ireland coach Joe Schmidt that he will be retiring from coaching after the World Cup. This is a mystery without clues

Chris Boyd has laid bare major retention challenges facing New Zealand Rugby by stating every All Black is forgoing significant sums when choosing to stay at home and expressing concern over the trend of young talent leaving. New Zealand’s on-going player exodus is well documented but it has possibly never been put this bluntly before. Given the evolving landscape where players are now content to depart at the start of careers, it is not alarmist to suggest offshore riches are a greater threat than ever. “I think they’re going to do really well to keep their best players playing for the All Blacks,” Boyd, the former Hurricanes now Northampton Saints coach, told the Herald in a wider-ranging interview this week. “We could accept that a 28, 29, 30-year-old, a Jerome Kaino who had finished his career with the All Blacks, then he goes to France and has a good few years to help set up his family. “What is irritating the New Zealand Rugby Union and rightly so is the 23, 24, 25-year-olds that still could go another World Cup cycle in New Zealand have chosen to select the money over the black jersey, and it’s as brutal as that.” In this delicate space, NZ Rugby is fast approaching a crossroads. The Herald understands up to 15 All Blacks could be missing from the 2020 Super Rugby season. That would include Ben Smith and Kieran Read, who will depart post World Cup, but also may encompass the likes of Waisake Naholo, Nehe Milner-Skudder, Owen Franks, Ryan Crotty and Aaron Smith, among others. Then there are those seeking sabbaticals; Beauden Barrett, Brodie Retallick and Sam Whitelock are known to be eyeing the potential of a double season in Japan or elsewhere before returning home. Others may also opt for a crack at chasing an Olympic medal with the sevens team that year. As Boyd points out, the scramble by competing overseas clubs to capture All Blacks next year will be frenzied. “Many New Zealand guys, particularly at the highest end, will have exits post World Cup. Those guys will come onto the international market in September next year so they could potentially play in next year’s competition wherever that is.” The fresh worry for NZR is talent being picked off at all ages as the mentality of emerging athletes, often fuelled by a sense of entitlement, rapidly changes. Look no further than 21-yearolds leaving for France when they don’t immediately earn Super Rugby contracts. Add in the potential for these players to eventually qualify for other nations, and concern is mounting around the erosion of depth and long-term sustainability of the New Zealand game. - NZME

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen will make an announcement on his future this morning. as such, more logical denouncements that tend to support the theory that Hansen will be standing down this time next year. The job takes an enormous toll – has an all-consuming quality about it which is tolerable, but not forever. The intense media scrutiny Hansen can withstand, making it clear in Rome that he won’t be bullied into selections or strategies that are not his. The pressure of the big games he still loves. The match day tension, the uncertainty and excitement of it all, the chance to see the hard work come together still gets the adrenaline pumping and his competitive juices flowing. But the amount of work that has to go into get to that point is draining and relentless and it comes at the expense of normality. The sacrifice is huge. It is not just the days, weeks, months away from home and parenting via Skype. It is not just the endless phone calls and meetings – the need to constantly be across what is happening in the lives of his players and management team. It is the totality of it all – the feeling of being owned and in demand from everyone else. Hansen has talked before about how he has come to accept he is public property – revealing that while he would like to take a

casual stroll with his wife without interruption, he knows it won’t happen. He revealed just how intrusive people can be and that he has to draw the curtains during the day to stop on-lookers gawping at him in his house. The job has hidden demands and having been head coach for eight years and with the All Blacks since 2004, if Hansen wants his life back then it wouldn’t be before time. Which brings into focus the long-swirling rumour – it dates back to the start of this year – he’s set to take a new role in 2020 as director of rugby. On one level this stacks up as credible. He could assume in this new role, some of the responsibilities of his current post. He talked, enviously, after the defeat to Ireland about their dictatorial system of ordering players to rest from club games and the benefit that comes with it. As director of rugby he could be the fulcrum between Super Rugby clubs, the All Blacks and NZR – preside over a more universal system of player management. He could be more involved in player contracting, talent identification and coach mentoring. It all makes sense but for the fact that Hansen would be handing over the parts of his current role that he loves to someone else while he picked up the jobs that he hasn’t given the impression to date quite light his fire in the

same way. There’s a suspicion he’d love for there to be a director of rugby to free him up to focus more on the pure art of selecting and coaching so as much as it is easy to believe the rumour mill is right, it is just as easy to dismiss it. Hence we await his news none the wiser yet skewed to anticipating confirmation he’s standing down. What ultimately tips the balance that way is the intangible sense that the time is right. Those who don’t know much but feel that they need to show they do, say that a changing room gets sick of hearing the same voice. A changing room switches off to a repeat dose of the same ideas, not the same voice, and coaches are no different to doctors, lawyers or chefs in that if they continue to evolve, their career can run indefinitely. Hansen has evolved and hence the All Blacks have too on his watch so the feeling of this being the right time to move on is not driven by fears of him being stale. It’s driven by him being part of something bigger than himself and the belief that the whole New Zealand rugby ecosystem needs to periodically refresh itself. And if nothing else, Hansen has had a great run, that will be tainted but not dented by an unsuccessful World Cup campaign next year. - NZME

French Top 14 club Pau, which has contracted numerous former New Zealand test players in recent years and is coached by ex All Black Simon Mannix. Smith, 32, made his test debut in 2009 but became a mainstay of

the world champions’ starting XV when Steve Hansen took over as coach in 2012. Regarded for much of that time as the world’s premier fullback, his versatility also meant he was fielded on the wing numerous

times, along with a short stint at outside centre. A genuine all-rounder, Smith boasts speed, a strong aerial game and decision- making ability which was matched by few of his peers. - AAP

Jemmett impresses for U17s Mid Canterbury’s under-17 cricketers have produced a mixed bag of results this week at their Canterbury regional under-17 tournament in Christchurch. Day one of the tournament was a tough one for the young Mid Canterbury side, losing both of their opening games. Playing in a 20/20 format on the opening day, Mid Canterbury’s bowlers stood out and put them in good a position, but they weren’t able to chase down the runs in both games. They played Christchurch Metro Red in game one and restricted them to 129/4 with Harry McMillan taking 1/13 off his four overs and Archie Redfern taking 2/31. Openers Isaac Bazley and Devon Flannery started Mid Canterbury’s reply well and at the fall of

the first wicket at 32 off 5 overs Mid Canterbury were well set up, but they couldn’t keep the momentum up and ended up 94/9 from the 20 overs. Flannery top scored with 26 and Angus Jemmett added 18. In game two against the fancied Canterbury Country, Mid Canterbury’s bowling unit did well to have them 41/3 after the first 10 overs, but a few missed chances in the field let them get away to 122/6. Standouts with the ball, were Tom Middleton 2/15 and Will Copeland 2/13. It was a gettable target, but Mid Canterbury never really got in the race. Bazley once again led from the front with 22 and was assisted by Thom Graham with 19, as Mid Canterbury ended up at 71/8.

Day two was much improved though, with Mid Canterbury taking on Buller and scoring a massive 209/7 off their 20 overs, before bowling the Buller boys out for 61. A wet start to the day meant the 50-over game was reduced down to a 40 over a side match, and after winning the toss and electing to bat, Mid Canterbury performed well with only one batsman failing to make double figures. Archie Redfern put together a superb captain’s knock of 52 with some hard hitting at the back end, and was supported by Bazley (19), Graham (24), Flannery (30), Tom Middleton (16), Aiden Bennett (22) and Tim Hartford (12). The partnership at the end of Bennett and Hartford of 36 in

quick time finished off Mid Canterbury’s innings well and set a formidable target for Buller to chase. Buller’s batting started strongly and at 32/2 Mid Canterbury had a fight on their hands. But then it became impossible to take the ball away from Jemmett and he ripped through the Buller middle order to take 20/5. Copeland was also near-unplayable taking 3/9, while Liam Sullivan chimed in to take a crucial wicket and Middleton took a spectacular outfield catch. Mid Canterbury were due to take on Christchurch Metro Black in a 50-over contest on Wednesday but play was washed out, and yesterday they played South Canterbury. Today is the final day of the tournament.

record and said he was not driven to reach any particular number of centuries before pulling stumps on his career. Flax Weaving - Kete for beginners This one-day workshop will be facilitated by Harakeke weaver Vicky King and will cover an introduction to harakeke (flax), harvesting and preparing it for weaving, also tikanga. Once preparation of the flax is complete participants will weave a pop-up kete or a putiputi – whatever they feel comfortable doing. Participants are to bring their lunch with them. Ice Skate Tour Allenton School, 110 Harrison Street, Ashburton The Ice Skate Tour travels around New Zealand with state of the art, artificial ice rinks. They look like ice and have 97 per cent same gliding capacity as natural ice. Prices are $8 for kids under 16, $12 for adults and $35 for a family (2 kids + 2 adults or 3 kids + 1 adult) which includes ice skates, helmet, gloves and at least half an hour ice skating (longer if capacity allows). Thirty-two teams took part in the social competition across three grades, with The Battle Dogs winning the social skilled ﬁnal – their fourth win in that grade in recent years. While the pre-Christmas competition had now wrapped up, there was a post-Christmas summer league starting up again in the last week of January and registrations were now open on the Mid Canterbury Netball website.
