Ashburton parents will have a choice of two full secondary schools to choose from in the town if the Ashburton Christian School gets its way. The school yesterday celebrat-

ed its 10th anniversary with a tree-planting, barbecue and endof-year assembly. Principal Tim Kuipers told the Guardian that early next year the school hoped to submit an application to the Ministry of Education to extend up to Year 13.

There would be lots of hoops to jump through, but he and the board were relaxed about the outcome. If the ministry said yes within two years, then the school could extend up to Year 13 within two to three years.

Kuipers said Ashburton was already very well served in the senior high school department by Ashburton College. “But it’s about having a second option for people who might want something different,” Kuipers said.

There were some parents wanting a smaller high school environment for their children and others seeking a God-centred approach.

Fire forces Intermediate students’ evacuation Year 7 students at Ashburton Intermediate School were evacuated from their classrooms following the discovery of a fire in a rubbish skip at the school yesterday. A teacher aide spotted the fire in a large bin beside a two-storey block off Grey Street about 11.10am.

Principal Brent Gray said the students were evacuated to the other side of the school. The Year 8s were already off-site on an end-of-year activity. Thick smoke was billowing from the bin and volunteer firefighters quickly put out the fire. The cause was not known.

Gilkison said he was worried for heritage buildings in all regional towns as building owners demolished quake-prone buildings instead of strengthening them. “We will start to lose the existing character of our regional towns. We have already lost so much … the railway station is a great example.” Redmonds applied to the Ashburton District Council in 2017 to demolish the building, but an independent hearing commissioner declined the application. Attempts to relocate the building later failed. The building was constructed in two main stages. The first is the original two-storey, curved roof building front on West Street and the second stage is at the rear, built in the mid-1900s. A heritage-listed grain store, the sole survivor of its type in Ashburton, would make a great venue for a covered market, says an urban designer who wants the building to remain. Building owner Redmond Retail Ltd is applying to the Environment Court to remove the Peter Cates grain store building on West Street from the Ashburton District Council’s group A heritage building list. The company says the costs of earthquake-strengthening and refurbishing would be around $2.6 million, but there is no demand and therefore no commercial return for such a building in Ashburton. De-listing the building would pave the way for Redmonds to remove it and use the land for a new economically-viable development. Urban designer and Historic Places Mid Canterbury vice-chairman Nigel Gilkison said the grain store had already been saved from a demolition order because of its heritage value. “It is the last of a building ty-

pology in Ashburton, which was really part of the formation of the township. There were six or seven of these grain stores along West Street and it is the only one that is left. All the others have been demolished. Ashburton developed as a town centre for the surrounding agricultural hinterland so these grain stores are really part of the character that formed.”

Gilkison said while the building was not ornate, it was a simple structure that could have a new life. One option could be as a covered market. “Retaining that building tells a real story, a narrative about how Ashburton formed. Once it is gone, all the memory of those grain stores is gone.” Historic Places Mid Canterbury

Hugo was an influential businessman and politician and served as mayor three times between 1879 and 1901. Over the years it has been consistently used for its original purpose. Council environmental services group manager Jane Donaldson said council was involved in the process because the application sought to remove a building from its district plan. A notice advising of the application to de-list made public last week was for people who were interested and who wanted the Environment Court to hear their opinion, she said. “The position of the council is that it opposes the de-listing of the building.” A real estate expert supporting the Redmond application said strengthening and refurbishing the building would achieve such limited returns, it would be more financially beneficial for the owner to lock the doors and walk away.

She was always interested in Maori culture, though there were few Maori families in Ashburton at the time – now more than 2000 people who identify as Maori live in the area. Ashburton’s Janet Benfell has been recognised for more than 50 years of passionate work at the Hakatere Marae. Benfell, 82, is one of 250 New Zealanders to receive local hero awards this month; ill health stopped her from receiving the medal in person in Christchurch last week, but her grandson Jay was proud and honoured to accept it on her behalf. Benfell, who has no Maori blood, says more Mid Canterbury people should take the time to learn about Maori history and culture in their neck of the woods. “It has so much to offer and it

gressing a marae for Mid Canterbury. In the early 1970s, an organising committee acquired the old Fairton School and the land where it stood off State Highway 1 was gazetted Maori Reserve. Until it was destroyed by arsonists in 2003, it was the oldest school building in the district. The marae was rebuilt over the next few years and Benfell says she is still motivated by her original ambition, that her children and grandchildren not be shy about going on to a marae. Now that Mid Canterbury is home to around 2000 people who identify as Maori, Benfell wishes more of them would visit the

marae. With so many people new to the district, its purpose is now is to be a home away from their home marae. She said people new to the area were often more interested in finding out its Maori history than those who had lived here for decades. Benfell remains an active member of the marae, organising fundraisers and group activities such as weaving and food. She is also a dedicated member of her church and involved in other community projects. The local hero awards recognise everyday people doing extraordinary things in their communities.

From P1 Ashburton Christian School has grown from 27 pupils to about 120 today. When it opened in 2009 there was no playground and just two classrooms. The sports field, a former orchard, had yet to be grassed. Today there are six classrooms, a science lab, two playgrounds and expansive green sportsfields. “But the most important thing is, for 10 years, we have done all we can to bless the children and families who have come into the school, to serve them and truly love them,” Kuipers said. “I hope every child has gone away from here knowing they are loved, they are unique, and knowing their gifts and talents have been developed.” The 10th anniversary celebration was particularly significant for three students, who were new entrants in the school’s first year and are now winding up their final year in Year 10. Hannah Kuipers and Jayden Butler are off to Ashburton College to complete their senior secondary education, while Shyla Kuru is off to Mount Hutt College. Planting the anniversary oak tree were school visionaries Keith and Rosemary Townshend. They said they were proud to see the concept come such a long way over the last 10 years, and for it to develop even further into a full secondary school would be their ultimate dream.

Playhouse off to Leeston Marie Kenny’s granddaughter is going to be very spoilt this Christmas. The Ashburton woman won the Lions Club of Ashburton’s annual doll’s house raffle and the well-crafted mini-building will have a new home at Leeston, where granddaughter Olivia lives. She said Olivia was just seven months old but would grow and no doubt have a lot of fun in the doll’s house. “We had a good look over it on Boulevard Day (when they bought their raffle ticket) and thought ‘please let us win’.” Kenny said she had a play hut as a kid and had fond memories. The doll’s house was built and painted over the past 12 months by club member Roger Paterson. He said the work was done as time allowed and was a job he enjoyed. It is his fifteenth doll’s house to be raffled by the club. Raffle organiser Leah Thomson said proceeds from the annual raffle would be donated to Birthright. Racing clubs benefit from payout Two local harness racing clubs have benefited from a government allocation to increase safety on racecourse around New Zealand. The beneficiaries of the Racing Safety Development Fund were announced yesterday by deputy Prime Minister, and Minister for Racing, Winston Peters, with more than $600,000 handed out from Invercargill in the south to Auckland in the north and everywhere in between. The fund plays an important role in supporting the safety of the racing industry for animals, staff and the wider public. In many areas these facilities are widely used by the community, and not just on race days. Two applications by local trotting clubs were accepted for money from fund which provides $1 million annual to racecourse safety across two funding rounds. The Ashburton Trotting Club received $15,286 for the resurfacing of their track – a decision which was made earlier this year following the abandonment of a race meeting due to surface flooding. One of the busier trotting venues in the greater Canterbury region with a number of race meetings and a plethora of workouts and trials which are held on an almost weekly basis, the need for a good surface is paramount to

the harness industry in New Zealand because of the high volume of horses which use the track for preparation and racing purposes. Further inland, the Methven Trotting Club received $8754 to go towards the removal of asbestos from their now demolished grandstand. After suffering irreparable

earthquake damage, which saw it almost impossible to bring it back up to the required code, the Methven Club made the decision to bring the building down. It was discovered post the decision that there was asbestos in the ceiling of the stand which required removal before the demolition.

Man charged in relation to death A Christchurch man has been charged in relation to the death of Shayne George Heappey. The 50-year-old man appeared at Christchurch District Court yesterday charged with intent to cause grievously bodily harm following the death of Heappey. Heappey was admitted to Christchurch

Hospital around 11pm on Saturday and later died of his injuries, sparking a homicide investigation by police. Police and forensic specialists have conducted an examination of the vehicle believed to have dropped Heappey off. The man was remanded in custody without plea to appear in court again on January 11, it was reported. – NZME

Needle found in strawberries Strawberries have been pulled from the shelves of a Timaru supermarket after the discovery of a needle. Foodstuffs NZ has pulled strawberries from Pak’nSave Timaru after a local woman found a needle inside a strawberry. The discovery is the latest in a string of disturbing incidents involving needles in fruit, including a needle found inside a strawberry in a punnet purchased at FreshChoice supermarket in Geraldine. Foodstuffs NZ spokeswoman Antoinette Laird said, “We are aware of an issue with a customer finding a foreign object in a punnet of strawberries purchased at one of our stores in Timaru. “Remaining product has since been removed from sale. .” Laird said they were liaising with the police and MPI directly regarding this and as such were unable to comment further. “Customer safety is our number one priority and we encourage all customers to contact stores directly should they ever encounter a tampering issue with a product,” she said. A police spokesperson confirmed police received a report on Monday afternoon regarding a needle in a strawberry in Timaru, and the matter had been referred to MPI. – NZME

After more than 100 years standing over the racecourse in Methven, the stand came down in March after being built in 1915 – making it one of the oldest standing buildings in Methven before it’s demise. The club is yet to make firm plans on the replacement of the stand.

Once again it is the time of year to remember loved ones no longer here at Christmas, with Paterson’s A Christmas to Remember, to be held on Thursday evening. PHOTO ASHBURTON GUARDIAN

For all the happiness of the season, Christmas can be a sad time as well. This is as people recall Christmases gone by, when they had family members around who are no longer with them. Taking time to remember those family members is the focus of A Christmas to Remember, to be held Thursday, 7pm, by Paterson’s Funeral Services at its chapel. Manager Barry Hayman said the annual service had been growing in attendance since it began four years ago. Family members light a candle to place on the alter, and write a note in a card to place on the chapel tree, in remembrance of the loved one they have lost. Celebrant Carol Gunn has led the service since its inception, and this year soloist Olivia Stewart will sing. Last year about 135 attended. It is held at the chapel, which has a capacity for 170. “Every year it has grown, but it’s not about numbers, it’s about providing for people who have lost loved ones. Even if there was only five or 10 people there, that would be five or 10 people who felt they needed it,” Hayman said.

Ashburton health promoter Pup Chamberlain is urging consumers to read the labels of so-called “healthy” food products. Chamberlain’s warning comes in the wake of Consumer New Zealand announcing winners of its Bad Taste Food Awards. The annual awards expose many products claiming to be good for children and adults as anything but. “It’s really up to consumers to have a good read of the ingredients and get as much information as they can. “The word ‘healthy’, as we know, is a big seller in marketing of food, and it’s not always accurate,” said Chamberlain, who is Community and Public Health’s Ashburton-based health promoter. For example, the almost 20 teaspoons of sugar in E2, marketed as a fruit-flavoured drink with vitamins and minerals, was “ridiculous”, Chamberlain said. Mid Canterbury, as elsewhere, was in the grips of an obesity epidemic, impacting on the taxpayer-funded health system, he added. The recipients of this year’s Bad Taste Food Awards are: ■ Nestle Cereal Nesquik: Despite claims it is “made with whole grain wheat and corn”, is “a source of fibre”, has “no artificial colours or flavours”, this cereal is 30 per cent sugar. ■ Nature Valley Crunchy Oats & Honey snack bars: Sugar is the second largest ingredient in these snack bars, marketed as an “excellent source of whole grain”, “lactose free”, and “packed

with natural whole grain oats and real honey”. Simply Squeezed Super Juice Warrior: You would get more vitamin C from eating an orange, and avoid the seven teaspoons of sugar per glass, if you do not buy this supposedly “good source of vitamin C for immune system support”. Singing the praises of our local heros T

ake a walk around the Mid Canterbury district at any given point in time and you’re bound to run into someone who could be considered a local hero. They’re the people who go above and beyond the call of duty, the ones who put others needs ahead of their own and the same people who are the first to roll up their sleeves and get stuck in at any event that might need a helping hand. We don’t praise those people within our community enough. They’ll sometimes get a pat on the back or a small public acknowledgement and that’s about it.

In all reality though, they deserve a whole lot more. So, it was great to see last week that two people from within the Ashburton District were recognised for their efforts when they were named Local Heroes at the Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year awards in Christchurch. Both Janet Benfell and Patricia McLaren have given almost

incomparable service to certain parts of our community and their recognition last week is only a small token of the appreciation that they truly deserve. So, why don’t we make more of a song and dance about the good people in our community? There are various moments in any given 12-month period where they might be given an acknowledgement, but that’s about it. We often tend to focus a little too much on all the negative things around the place – but the positives are by far more important when it comes to speaking out loudly. We’ve got enough wonderful people scattered around the

district who would be more than deserving of a special presentation to thank them for their tireless work over extended periods of time. It’s the sort of thing we probably need to be giving more emphasis to instead of worrying about the small stuff. So, it might pay to watch this space – particularly early in the New Year. We’ve decided here at the Guardian that it’s time to recognise the good in our community but, we are keen to have the input from the very people for whom life is directly impacted by those doing good making these decisions.

There will be no meeting of suits behind closed doors somewhere – we are going to bring something exciting that the whole community can get behind. We can’t say too much more just yet, but we are excited by the prospect and are keen to get you, our readers, on board with this little project and turn it into a great community feel-good thing, where those who are most deserving of significant recognition get their moment in the sun that they so truly deserve. Keep an eye out over the coming weeks for more information. We can’t wait to get things under way.

Looking back on 2018 A

nother year is drawing to a close, with less than two weeks left until the Christmas/New Year holiday period. Many, who now live outside of our district, are returning to their families to celebrate, while others are planning trips to other parts of the country and the world, for some much anticipated rest and relaxation. Coming together for a holiday gathering is often a chance to catch up and reflect on the year that has been. For council, 2018 has been another very busy year, with multiple projects moving ahead and our usual services performing well. Looking back on 2018, there are a number projects and activities that come to mind … The council has been continuing to address ways of improving our district, and helping to revamp the Ashburton CBD has been a key component of this. Earlier this year, residents were asked to share their thoughts on our proposed changes to the CBD streetscape, and the final plan was adopted in September. The intention of this project is to freshen up the CBD in a way that will encourage more people to come into town, enjoy the space and support our local economy. It will be exciting to see the planning work completed throughout this year start being implemented in 2019. We’ve seen considerable progress with the new Council

Administration and Library Building project, with project manager, Logic Group and the architect and lead designer, Athfield Architects Limited both appointed this year. The council has also worked to help future-proof the selected site for the new building at Baring Square East by purchasing additional land in the area. This year has also seen the adoption of some key documents that are working to support and improve our district – the 2018-28 Long Term Plan and the Ashburton District Welcoming Communities Plan. Both of these plans, although vastly different in nature, are designed to make our district a better place, and I’d like to thank everyone who has contributed to their development; whether that be through ranking which issues are most important for the district in the Our Place campaign, providing feedback on the draft documents, or taking part in workshops. Your input has helped to decide which projects council funds and how it’s paid for (Long Term Plan), and how our district goes about becoming an even more welcoming place for

From a core infrastructure perspective, I was pleased to see in our latest Annual Report that the district has seen 2.2 per cent more recyclable materials diverted away from waste and into recycling than the previous year, which is likely to have been influenced by the introduction of the wheelie bin system and the development of two new rural recycling drop-off sites. This is a really positive step for our environment and sustainability, and I hope to see this trend continue next year. With all of this work happening (and much more), it’s easy to see how 12 months can

Video fury grows Outrage built yesterday in the US over a video showing police officers violently yanking a toddler from his mother’s arms at a Brooklyn public benefits office, with officials criticising police for not de-escalating the situation and clients of the facility complaining it is indicative of how the city treats social-services recipients. The video, taken by a bystander, captured the chaotic scene that unfolded last Friday as officers tried to remove mother Jazmine Headley from the crowded office, where she had sat on the floor for two hours because of a lack of chairs. Police were called when she refused a security guard’s order to leave. The woman ended up lying face-up on the floor during a tug of war over her 18-month-old son. “The baby was screaming for his life,” Nyashia Ferguson, who posted video on Facebook under the name Monae Sinclair, told The New York Times. “The lady was begging for them to get off of her. I was scared.” Other clients shouted at the officers. At one point, an officer can be seen pulling her stun gun and pointing it at people in the angry crowd. Headley was charged with obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest, endangering the welfare of a child and trespassing. As of yesterday, she was still in jail because there was a warrant for her arrest in New Jersey, prosecutors said. Bail was not requested and prosecutors were reaching out to New Jersey officials to “expedite her release.” A family member was taking care of the child, authorities said. The Brooklyn public defender’s office called on prosecutors to dismiss the charges. At a news conference outside the benefits office, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, a Democrat and former police officer, likened the officers involved in Headley’s arrest to “Border Patrol police snatching away” a baby. He called the arrest “a blemish on our entire city. “The mother didn’t endanger the welfare of the child. “The actions of the department endangered the welfare of the child,” Adams said. “If it’s wrong in Mexico, then it’s wrong in New York City.” City Council Speaker Corey Johnson,

Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted, “This was a disturbing incident. Like anyone who’s watched this video, I have a lot of questions about how this was handled. “Steve Bank, commissioner of the Department of Social Services, said he was “deeply troubled” by the incident and a “thorough” review had been launched.

He said two HRA employees, whom he described as peace officers, are being placed on modified duty pending that investigation. The New York Police Department is also reviewing the situation. It wasn’t clear from court charging documents or the video why security guards at the centre had ordered Headley to leave or why she refused to go. Patrick Lynch, the head of the union that represents patrol officers, said the officers were “put in an impossible situation” and blamed shouting bystanders for making a tense situation worse. “The event would have unfolded much differently if those at the scene had simply complied with the officers’ lawful orders,” he said. “The immediate rush to condemn these officers leaves their fellow cops wondering: when confronted with a similar impossible scenario, what do you want us to do? The answer cannot be ‘do nothing’.” The Brooklyn district attorney’s office said it was investigating and hoped to reach a swift decision on whether to prosecute Headley. Lisa Schreibersdorf, executive director of Brooklyn Defender Services, the legal aid office handling Headley’s case, said at a news conference that it isn’t uncommon for stressed clients of the city’s overburdened social serve agencies “to find themselves arrested because of an incident that wasn’t really criminal.” Benefits recipients like Karen Blondel, 56, a former client at the Brooklyn office, said the atmosphere inside the city aid offices was oppressive. “The way they treat people in here from the time you get here in the morning, it’s absolutely inhumane,” she said. Jeremy Friedman, 32, a massage therapist who has received food stamps, said he was regularly “treated like I’m not even human” at the office, and rudely hung-up on when he tried to call with questions. Jennifer Roman, 33, said she works but has used public benefits for 13 years. She went to the Brooklyn office for the first time yesterday after moving to the neighbourhood from the Bronx. There’s a systemwide problem of disrespect, Roman said, and she was not surprised by what the video showed. There’s a perception, she said, that “since we need help, we’re no good, we’re scum.” - AP

Farmers ‘blindsided’ of a recent revelation that the Fonterra board had shifted 5c/ kg – about $70m – of farmers’ due milk price for the 2018 financial into the earnings side of the balance sheet. In a private notice to shareholders on the advance rate cut, Fonterra said if it had continued to pay the previously advised $4.15 advance rate, which was based on a milk price forecast of $6.15, it “would go against our financial discipline guidelines and could have had implications for our credit rating”. Industry watchers said the move was to give Fonterra “bridging finance” to improve the look of its books for credit rating agencies at January 31. One Fonterra dairy processing competitor, which declined to be named, said its phones have been red hot with requests from Fonterra shareholders to switch, and from farmers on waiting lists now urgently wanting to leave Fonterra. - NZME

The $4.15 will kick in again in February, with Fonterra telling shareholders they would be paid $4.15/kg for January milk in February, with the February payment retrospectively paying $4.15 for all milk supplied for the season to date. Fonterra has thrown many of its farmer-shareholders and their accountants into a spin with a “blindsider” announcement that the company is clawing back a big chunk of payments due for their milk, turning their expected cashflows for January upside down. The big dairy co-operative, which posted its first ever net loss recently and has $6.2 billion of debt, has told its farmers the advance payment rate schedule has been reset at $4/kg milksolids, down from the previously announced, and banked on, advance rate of $4.15. The shock change means farmers will in January, be paid $4/ kg for the milk they produced in December instead of the $4.15 they had been told to expect, plus Fonterra is clawing back 15c/kg less for all of the milk a farmer has supplied between June and November. Big fine for Yealands Yealands Estate Wines has been fined $400,000 for making false statements in export documents and having incorrect internal records. The Marlborough wine group pleaded guilty in the Blenheim District Court to five charges laid by the Ministry of Primary Industries. The charges, according to a statement from the company, relate to inaccurate internal wine records and the making of false statements in export eligibility applications under the Wine Act. New Boeing jet Boeing will launch a mega business jet that can fly more than half way around the world without stopping, further than any business jet ever built. Marshmallow slice 125 g margarine or butter 1/2 cup sugar 3T cocoa 1 egg 1t vanilla essence 1t grated orange zest 3C breakfast cereal 1/4 C sultanas 1/2 C baby marshmallows ■ Heat the margarine or butter, sugar and cocoa together in a saucepan until the butter has melted. ■ Remove from the heat and cool one minute. Beat in the egg, vanilla essence and orange rind. ■ Place cereal into a plastic bag and crush lightly with a rolling pin. ■ Mix the crushed cereal, sultanas and marshmallows into the melted mixture. ■ Press evenly into a, baking paper-lined 19cm x 29cm slice tin. ■ Refrigerate for 4 hours or until firm. ■ Use a warm knife to cut into 30 pieces to serve.

12 gingernut biscuits 25g butter, melted 850g can black Doris plums in syrup 120g white chocolate, chopped 250g pottle cream cheese, softened 1C cream, lightly whipped to soft peak stage ■ Place gingernuts in a food processor and process until crumbed, or crush with a rolling pin. ■ Stir melted butter into the biscuit crumbs. ■ Spoon the crumbs into the base of 6 serving glasses. ■ Drain plums, reserving syrup. ■ Cut the plums into quarters, removing the stones. ■ Reserve 6 plum quarters and mash the remaining with a fork. ■ Melt the white chocolate in the microwave or in a bowl over hot water and set aside to cool. ■ Beat the soft cream cheese until smooth. ■ Stir in the melted white chocolate and mashed plums. ■ Carefully fold through the lightly whipped cream. ■ Divide the plum mixture between the serving glasses. ■ Chill for 10 minutes. ■ To serve, top with a plum and pour over a little of the reserved plum syrup.

■ Preheat oven to 140°C (fan assisted). ■ Mix cornflour, ground mixed spice, white wine vinegar and vanilla extract together to make a paste. Set aside. ■ Mix caster and brown sugars together. ■ Whisk egg whites together in a clean bowl until soft peaks form. ■ Continue whisking, adding sugars a little at a time alternately with the cornflour mixture until the meringue is stiff and glossy. ■ Spoon into 6 meringues, spaced apart on a baking tray lined with baking paper. ■ Shape into nests by making dips in the centre with the back of a spoon. ■ Bake for 1 hour. ■ Turn off the oven and leave to cool in the oven for a further 1 hour. ■ To serve place a meringue nest on a serving plate, fill with yoghurt and fresh strawberries. ■ Spoon the peach coulis over the meringue. Peach coulis: ■ Place peaches and juice in a food processor or blender and process until smooth.

■ Freeze the 2 bags of pineapple lumps overnight or until hard ■ Line a slice tin (or 25cm square cake tin) with baking paper or spray well with cooking spray and set aside. ■ Crush the biscuits in a food processor. ■ Cut pineapple lumps into small pieces. ■ Melt the butter and condensed milk in a large saucepan on low heat until melted and mixed together well. ■ Pour the pineapple lumps and biscuits mixture into the butter/condensed milk mixture and combine well. ■ Spoon the biscuit mixture into the slice tray and press down very firmly. ■ Melt your chocolate in the microwave with 10-20 second bursts, stirring until completely melted. ■ Pour the chocolate onto the slice and using the back of a spoon spread chocolate evenly over the slice. ■ Place in the fridge for at least two hours (preferably overnight). ■ Take the slice out of the fridge, leave for 20 minutes before slicing into squares. ■ This slice will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for 5 days.

rowing up, I always thought veterans or seniors sport was for old people. But all of a sudden, I’ve found myself as one of them and I’m not entirely sure where all those years have gone. On Sunday I played for the Mid Canterbury seniors tennis team against North Canterbury, and although it has been hard to get my head around the fact I was now a ‘senior’, when I still class myself as relatively young at 35, I think I might have found the perfect kind of tennis for me. It was only doubles, the level of play was pretty good, it was fun and there was afternoon tea at the end. All in all it was a pretty good day, even though it was really, really hot. What surprised me about the experience though, was that wasn’t that easy for the organisers to find enough players to actually field a team. It was meant to be 10 men and 10 women per side, but Mid Canterbury could only muster eight women, and that included

Unfortunately – and it’s a problem facing more sports than just tennis – getting people to commit, particularly when a weekend is involved, is hard. And it’s not a new problem. A few years ago I had the job of mustering the women’s team for the open grade rep matches when the Browning Shield was played over numerous weekends, as opposed to the one weekend format it was now. I got very used to hearing the words “no thanks”, with the odd “you must be desperate if you want me” mixed in with a hysteric laugh thrown in. So how do we get more people saying yes to these things? That is the question that no one knows the answer to. I decided to say yes, and on Sunday I played what was officially my first game as a senior. I did play one sneaky game for them last season at the tender

age of 34 – they were short for their game against Malvern so made an exception for me. Come their next game in February, if they want me, I’d happily play again. For the past few years I’d been solely a social player. It had been many, many years since I’d last played representative tennis, and just as long since I’d last played sets. I gave away open grade tennis a few seasons ago now and one of the main reasons was because it just wasn’t fun anymore. I liked to have a laugh on court and a bit of a chat while changing ends, but I’d increasingly find myself playing kids who weren’t so much up for a chat and a laugh, who got grumpy and unpleasant if I was

beating them, or smart and just a bit too big for their boots if they were winning. I like to win as much as the next person, but I also liked to have fun, and I’d stopped having fun. But Sunday was fun. The games were good quality and I didn’t play as badly as I thought I might, but most importantly, it was fun. No one got smart, no one got grumpy; everyone was out there for a good time. I’m pretty sure I was the youngest there, and the oldest was in her 80s, but it was far from patter-tennis. I’ve learnt over the years that with age in tennis, comes consistency, and at times it was like you were hitting against a brick wall. The ball just kept coming back and the challenge was working out how to stop it from coming back, while remaining consistent yourself. In case you’re wondering, I didn’t win, but I certainly got my money’s worth – losing both in third set super tie-breaks. Most importantly though, I had fun.

Youth to the fore Two big tournaments at the Waireka Croquet Club ensured the club’s Philip Street courts were a hive of activity over the weekend. Both tournaments were for association croquet players, with one being the Windsor Richard Handicap Tournament and the other being the South Canterbury

Open Championship Singles. Both tournaments were generally held in tandem to allow both the junior and more experienced players attend the same tournament, making it a real learning curve for some of the newer or younger players. The Windsor Richards Handicap Tournament was a handicap

event open to players on 10-24 handicaps and it was often the first tournament a new player entered, and this year there were seven entrants. The South Canterbury Open Championship singles also attracted seven entries. Two 18-year-olds competed in the open tournament and one in

the Windsor Richards, and as it turned out it was youngsters who dominated in both. Waireka’s Logan McCorkindale won the open tournament, with Aorangi’s Graeme Simpson finishing runner-up, while Waireka’s Josie Tallents won the Windsor Richards, with Ashbury’s Maurice Young the runner-up.

Instead the master blaster will watch a former innings for Brisbane Heat over and over before trying to give national selectors a reminder of his pickets-clearing talent in the Big Bash League. Lynn has avoided looking back at his underwhelming stint in Australia’s recent one-day and Twenty20 series, admitting his confidence had taken a hit ahead of next week’s BBL opener against Adelaide Strikers. However, the 28-year-old expects to be back to his dangerous

best in the BBL after following the advice of Australian coach Justin Langer. The former test opener has recommended players watch the best innings of their life to regain confidence. And Lynn reckoned he couldn’t go past his impressive 98 off 49 balls – including 11 sixes – when he and fellow Bash Brother Brendon McCullum ran amok against Perth Scorchers in January 2017. “Having not scored as many runs as I would have liked (for Australia) they are not the better games I would look back at,” Lynn said of his recent white-ball exploits. “Justin Langer got us to look at

the best game we have ever played to get us in that mindset which I think is a good thing and I will be doing that before the Big Bash. “That (98) with Baz was one of the better games of cricket I have had, not just because I did well. “I just had so much fun out there. After a swift beginning, the Kevin Fairbairn-trained runner found the lead and never looked back, rolling the opposition along at a steady clip before fighting strongly up the long straight to hold off the challenges of both Marlee (Ineka Lee) and Strong Enough (Ricky May). Schmidt in line for award Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt has been nominated for Coach of the Year for the Halberg Awards. The official nomination comes just two weeks after the Kiwi-born coach was named World Rugby’s Coach of the Year and his shock announcement to finish coaching after next year’s Rugby World Cup. Schmidt was widely tipped as the favourite to take over the All Blacks role if Steve Hansen was to step away, for his incredible effort in leading Ireland to the second-ranked rugby side in the world and recently leading Ireland to a historic 16-9 victory over the World Champions in Dublin. He will go up against the likes of Lisa Carrington’s coach Gordon Walker, Scotsman Clark Laidlaw coach of the All Blacks Sevens, and Allan Bunting of the Black Ferns Sevens for the prestigious award. The list of initial nominations across all categories were announced today with the finalists to be named in the New Year. 2016 supreme Halberg Award winner Lisa Carrington leads the nominations for the Sportswoman of the Year with 22 nominations from 15 sports announced. World champion shot putter Tom Walsh, the 2017 winner, heads the 18 nominations from 12 sports for the Sportsman of the Year award which includes All Blacks duo Brodie Retallick and Richie Mo’unga as well as Black Caps batsman Ross Taylor and Indy Car champion Scott Dixon. Five time winner Sophie Pascoe has again been nominated for the newly named Para Athlete/Team of the Year award along with Adam Hall (para alpine skiing), Aotearoa NZ Para Waka Ama V12 (para waka ama), Commonwealth Games Para-Triples – Barry Wynks, Bruce Wakefield, Mark Noble (para bowls), Corey Peters (para alpine skiing), Holly Robinson (para athletics), Michael Johnson (para shooting), Nicole Murray (para cycling), Rachel Maia (para climbing) and Scott Martlew (para canoe racing). Go karters traded in their usual grass paddocks for a sealed surface on Sunday when they headed to Hinds Seed Cleaning for some sprint racing. It was the Ashburton Family Go Kart Club’s December race meeting and it took place on the concrete yard around the Hinds business. Taking out the overall title for the day was Jordan Rae, while Jordan Trumper was the fastest junior, Scott McLaren was the fastest intermediate karter, and Ryan Gallagher was the fastest midget. Porsche happy to keep Hartley on board Discarded Formula One driver Brendon Hartley will remain part of Porsche’s factory driver programme in 2019. The Kiwi, who was sacked by Toro Rosso earlier this month after only one full Grand Prix season, has been confirmed in the role at the manufacturer’s Night of Champions event in Stuttgart. Porsche motorsport chief Fritz Enzinger confirmed at the Night of Champions its first Formula E driver was already decided and would be announced shortly ahead of the start of testing this spring.

Hartley managed just four points this F1 season and finished second-last in the drivers’ championship. He was axed after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and replaced Alexander Albon. In an interview with Newstalk ZB’s Mike Hosking last week, Hartley suggested there was more to his sacking than on-track performance.

“I would love to tell the story one day,” he told Hosking. “The politics of it all I don’t enjoy. “What I will say is Formula One is very complicated, there’s a lot of money involved, politics and some of the reasons why drivers stay or leave isn’t always in your control or of reasons for pure performance.” - NZME
