Rotary donates books to children There’s nothing better than receiving a new book when you start school. The Ashburton Rotary Club thinks the same thing. On Monday this week at Tinwald School’s assembly there were 13 five-yearolds that each received a new book for the beginning of their school year. They each received a book dontated by the Ashburton Rotary Club and presented to them by principal Peter Livingstone. The new entrants’ class at Tinwald School is taught by Monique Reay. Govt to fund free period products in schools By Maddison Gourlay maddison.g@theguardian.co.nz

All primary, intermediate, and secondary students will now have access to free period products as of June this year. Ashburton College principal Ross Preece welcomed the government’s announcement and said it was overdue. The college has always tried

hard to support people who suffer from period poverty, Preece said, and for years they have had absences due to periods. Preece recognises that the college office staff gives a massive amount of support to its students and supports them in a multitude of ways. “The office ladies are fantastic in how they support the kids,” Preece said. They have been grateful for the community agencies that have

donated products over the years, he said. Ashburton Intermediate principal Brent Gray said the school will be opting into the scheme. “It’s a welcome programme to some students,” Gray said. There is a small number of students that will benefit from the scheme, Gray said, but it is still important for the school to have that support for the people that could need it.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said young people should not miss out on their education because of something that is a normal part of life. “Providing free period products at school is one way the Government can directly address poverty, help increase school attendance, and make a positive impact on children’s wellbeing,” Ardern said. The announcement followed the successful Access to Period

Products pilot programme held in the Waikato region last year. The Ministry of Education will work with suppliers to manage a phased roll-out of the scheme nationwide, which the government expects will happen by the end of term 2 of this year. Schools must opt in by March to be part of the programme, but will be able to take part at a later date if they do not sign up for the initiative by then.

Born with the shakes set up in the room where they began to fully appreciate the severity of what had happened. “It was pretty surreal.” Once Kody had been born, the new parents suggested to hospital staff that they vacate for Ashburton considering medical services at Christchurch were now stretched. “We were supposed to spend the night in Christchurch. “Initially the first response was ‘no you’ve got to stay here’.” About 30 minutes later it was agreed by the hospital that the family could leave. More than 230 patients were treated in the emergency department within an hour of the shake. “Within an hour and a half to two hours, Lana was walking down the stairs, we were loading Kody into the car and then it was a two and a half hour drive from Christchurch to Ashburton just with the amount of traffic. “It was just crazy, it was pretty unreal.” In the ensuing years where the family have also welcomed second son Joe, Kody is naturally curious about the day he was born. The family celebrated his 10th birthday on Monday. “Every year it’s on the news and he likes to watch it. “I still think it’s a little bit unreal for him too. “As he gets older I think he’ll realise the severity of it and appreciate it more.” Although Christchurch was the epicentre of the disaster, Owen said it had been a catalyst for everybody to come together. “It’s made Canterbury people way more resilient and probably made people look internally and realise that life is quite precious.”

It was some way to enter the world. However for the parents of a Methven youngster who was born less than three hours after the 2011 Christchurch earthquake struck, the memories of an eventful day remain vivid. Lana Owen gave birth to oldest son Kody at Christchurch Hospital on the afternoon of that fateful day on February 22 2011, after arriving at hospital in the early hours that morning. The quake hit the Garden City at about 12.51pm, killing 185 people and causing widespread damage in the city and throughout the wider region. Husband Richie recalls glancing out over Hagley Park from the birthing ward during the event. “I saw the trees move and cracks in the wall and the other birthing suites screaming are probably the most vivid memories,” he said. “Initially I grabbed Lana’s bed with the midwife and we were both holding the bed either side and me and the midwife and I were just looking at each other.” Remarkably, it was his pregnant wife who was the most composed during the ordeal, despite grappling with the small issue of labour. “Lana was probably the calmest out of all of us to be honest,” he said. “She just went with it. “It happened and the bed that Lana was on was a roller bed so it was crucial that we grabbed that bed to stop it rolling around the room. “The midwife and I were both like ‘whoa this is intense’.” It was not until a radio was

Munro maverick ‘humbled’ By Adam Burns adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

Not everything went to plan. However Damian Perriton has come away from an unpredictable Burt Munro journey a winner following a memorable four-day excursion to the annual motorcycle rally in Invercargill. The Hinds man set himself an objective of competing in all five events of the rally whilst using the event to champion discussion around mental health. A fundraiser was also set up to raise funds for the Mental Health Foundation. But volatile weather conditions threatened to cause havoc for Perriton and his plans. The hill climb was cancelled due to high winds a day after he travelled seven hours in torrential rain on his GN250 commuter bike. “It wasn’t a very good start,” he said. Despite racing being officially called off, Perriton did complete a run up the hill. The twilight drag racing scheduled for the same day was also canned, however it moved to the next day. Problem was that it presented Perriton with a logistical head-

PHOTO ADAM BURNS 230221-AB-9287 ache with the drag racing moved right before the start of the NZ Beach Racing Champs on Oreti Beach, essentially wiping out any chance of competing in both races. “It wasn’t ideal because the idea was trying to do all the events,” he laughed. “I thought it was going to look bloody stupid.” Although timing was touch and go, he was able to convince or-

ganisers to do a solitary run in the drag racing before making a beeline to the beach. The 44-year-old placed seventh from 10 starters in the beach racing. The weather improved dramatically over the following days as Perriton completed showings in the sprint and street race events. The starter motor would also break down following the the final event.

“I was having to push start it the rest of the way.” Perriton was later acknowledged during the event prizegiving with the Wayne Affleck Maverick Trophy. The memento is named after one of the founders of the Burt Munro Challenge, the late Wayne Affleck. “I didn’t expect any trophies or anything. “But meeting the family who explained what it was all about, it was really humbling.” Perriton also took it upon himself to engage with anyone he encountered on the road and at the rally. He also helped a fellow motorist back on to the road near Balclutha after he blew a radiator fitting, prompting Perriton to head back into town to source some parts for the man. Further rough weather and a beachside detour near Oamaru which went awry kept the journey interesting on the return home. He set a goal of raising $2000 for the Mental Health Foundation. The fundraiser was sitting at more than $2500 earlier in the week. “There were some hairy moments,” he said. “I achieved what I wanted to achieve and got home safely.”

An unruly vegetation fire darkened skies near Ashburton on Sunday afternoon, keeping local fire crews busy. Firefighters responded to what was believed to have been a controlled burn-off which had “gotten away” in Huntingdon, the second of two major call-outs in the town over the weekend. Crews from Ashburton and Willowby responded to the blaze on Stranges Road at about 2.15pm that afternoon. A Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) spokeswoman confirmed about a kilometre of fence line and an area of toe toe shrub was on fire upon the arrival of two tankers and an Ashburton fire appliance. An on-site digger was also used

to assist crews extinguish the fire by pulling apart a portion of hedge in the centre. The blaze was brought under

control by about 4pm, the spokeswoman said. Fenz crews did not confirm whether the fire was caused by a

burn-off, however it was the suggested cause by the initial caller. A fire also broke out in the laundry area of the Hotel Ashburton on Saturday. Three engines and a support vehicle from Ashburton, alongside a further engine from Methven, were called to premises on Racecourse Road after being alerted at about 6pm. The spokeswoman confirmed the fire damaged an area estimated at three by four metres and started in the drier of the laundromat area. Although it was not a “particularly big” fire, the fact it occurred on hotel premises was a reason multiple appliances responded, the spokeswoman said. The blaze was extinguished about 6.30pm with no guests affected. A fire investigator was not required at the scene.

In brief Rangitata consent The Rangitata Diversion Race (RDR) Management Limited has decided not to pursue a 10-cumec water take consent. The consent had been the subject of an Environment Court Appeal, after being granted by the Canterbury Regional Council in 2018. The Central South Island Fish and Game Council had opposed the consent at the regional council hearing, arguing against taking more water from the Rangitata River. Fish and Game had cited a range of adverse effects including increased sediment deposition and restriction of spawning salmon passage. RDR’s decision not to pursue additional water removes the impediment for ECan to bring forward a statutory plan sought by Fish and Game to protect the river from further water abstraction.

Domain gates closing Residents are being advised to be mindful of leaving their vehicles in the Ashburton Domain late at night, as new closing hours get under way. The Ashburton Domain’s main West Street entrance near the West Street/ Walnut Avenue roundabout is being closed to visitors from 11pm until 6am each night in an effort to reduce vandalism and antisocial behaviour. The carparks are checked prior to the gates closing and attended vehicles are escorted out of the domain before the gates are locked. If anyone has left their vehicle inside the domain after the closing time, they are able to contact an after-hours service to be given access to their car. A bar gate is currently being used to restrict access, but a permanent gate will be installed shortly.

Changes to grants In response to greatly increased demand from local community groups seeking operational funding, Trustees of the Community Trust of Mid and South Canterbury have decided to amend the structure of their grant rounds ahead of the new financial year. Under the new structure there will be two grant rounds annually for capital projects up to a maximum value of $20,000. There will be two grant rounds annually for capital projects in excess of $20,000. There will also be two operating grant rounds annually for operational (programme or event) funding up to a maximum value of $15,000. Applicants can apply once per annum, choosing the appropriate round to enter.

TimeBank tours lakes district A small group of people headed out on a road trip to explore the Ashburton Lakes area organised by the Ashburton Timebank on Sunday. The 20 people, aged between three and 83, soaked in a bit of history at the historic buildings at Hakatere Station before stops at Lake Camp, Lake Clearwater, Maori Lakes and Lake Heron. Mid Canterbury TimeBank co-ordinator Kate White said the group “had a wonderful relaxing time soaking up the sights, enjoying the sunny day – mostly from the shade, learning some history, and admiring our beautiful backyard”. She said the purpose of the trip, as well as seeing the sights, was for people to connect with others, get to know new people, and feel a sense of belonging. “Connect is one of the 5 Ways to Wellbeing and something we promote and enable through the TimeBank. “We organise larger social gatherings every month for this purpose of connection as well as regular cafe catch-ups during the week.” On the lakes tour White said after the group enjoyed delving into some history

at the Hakatere Station historic buildings they stopped for lunch at the top of Lake Camp in the shade. Their entertainment was provided by some Scouts who had rafted from the other end of the lake and some water-skiers. They popped over to neighbouring Lake Clearwater and then onto the Maori Lakes where Robin Burton provided some facts about the area. The final stop was Lake Heron for afternoon tea. “It was a lovely, relaxed day of people catching up with each other, making new friends and enjoying the beautiful scenery.” TimeBank’s next big event is its annual open weekend held at Staveley Camp on March 6-7. “People can come along for the workshops – organised through the Learning Exchange, come to participate in the working bee, help in the forest or just come and enjoy the forest with a walk or a rest in a hammock.” People can come for a day or stay overnight, she said.

Canterbury’s mayors came away with plenty to ponder after a close up look at aspects of the freight network in Canterbury last week. Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown said the Canterbury Mayoral Forum’s freight tour was a valuable experience visiting Lyttelton Port, Christchurch International Airport, Move Logistics in Rolleston’s inland port, and then PrimePort Timaru. “It was a good trip learning a lot around what works well and things that can be improved on,” Brown said. The tour gave the mayors the opportunity to talk directly to the people involved with the different aspects of freight – land, sea and the air – and how they integrate. “It’s all complicated logistically and all the areas could work together better, all for a common cause,” Brown said. Once such example was while at the Izone inland port in Rolleston it was highlighted how many containers on the roads are not filled to capacity. “They gave an example of a container filled with craft beer, the weight of the top box will crush the bottom one so a container would only be three-quarters full so they could fill the rest up with toilet paper or something because there is empty space there.

However, it was a direct freight option and items still required further cartage to reach their destination. What was apparent was there was room for improvement,

Brown said. “The mayoral forum will now sit down and have a discussion to see how we can be involved in getting everyone on the same page to make improvements.” While Ashburton is the middle man in the South Island’s freight network it still has a major part to play, Brown said. “We are in the middle as we don’t have a port, and will never have a port, but we do have a railway line. “We could use that railway line better to take trucks off the

road and send containers direct to the ports that way.” Brown said the Mayoral Forum tour was a double up as all the Canterbury mayors are part of the Canterbury Regional Transport Committee. With the council set to submit on the transport committee’s draft regional plan, including confirming the second urban Ashburton River bridge and proposing four-lanes from Ashburton to Rolleston, the tour would have provided an ideal opportunity to highlight the need for the

upgrades. However, Brown didn’t get to chew his colleagues’ ear about it as they had to car pool due to the logistics of the mayors having different travel plans at the end of the tour. The tour ended with a Mayoral Forum quarterly meeting, which Brown said was business as usual, discussing things like the three waters review and the future of local government, which he will report back on to the Ashburton District Council next week.

Everyone has a quake story By Jonathan Leask jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz

veryone remembers where they were on February 22, 2011. Some were in the thick of it, like my aunty who ended up walking from the Christchurch CBD to Woodend barefoot. I was on my couch in Methven, having lunch. Nothing spectacular or memorable about it other than that is where I was in what was a defining moment of the decade. I had been in Christchurch and had considered staying longer to do a spot of shopping, but decided I couldn’t be bothered with the hustle and bustle of the mall that day and opted to come home early. So my quake story is a what could have been. Instead, there I was eating lunch on my day off when disaster stuck. In our flat at the time we had a glass of water by the television so we could judge the severity of the earthquakes that had become a regular part of Canterbury life after the first big quake in Darfield in September 2010. I remember hearing that distant rumbling sound, looking at the water in the glass sway and thinking it was quite a big one. It didn’t take long for the news reports to roll in that it was certainly a big one – a 6.2 magnitude earthquake which caused devastation and 185 deaths, changing the Canterbury landscape in an instant. There are many with much more exciting and terrifying stories than mine. Sitting in the Guardian office on Monday, the CBD construction work outside only helped the memories come flooding back of what life was like in those immediate post-quake times. Being in a building that is designed to move in quakes can be unsettling at the best of times, but on Monday, the 10 year anniversary of the Christchurch earthquake, it seemed much more noticeable. It reminded me of when aftershocks were a daily occurrence; the Guardian building would rattle and the chorus would go up guessing the magnitude, or that it was simply a truck rolling by along East Street. A decade on we have moved on in some ways from postquake life to Covid-19 times. Just like everyone can with the Christchurch earthquakes, I can remember where I was when the lockdown was announced. Again I was on the couch, different house and different couch, but on the couch nonetheless – although this time I think that is a shared memory with thousands.

Time for agriculture to promote job benefits F

armers would have been largely unsurprised by the recent dip in unemployment figures. The almost 800 jobs advertised in the dairy industry pretty much every week since Covid-19 reared its ugly head is a clear sign that New Zealanders are not out there clamouring for work, or at least not in the agricultural sector. Sheep and beef, arable and horticulture are all seeing similar issues, with experienced staff hard to find – and retain. This is reflected in the most recent Federated Farmers/Research First farm confidence survey, with a net 36 per cent of respondents reporting it is now harder to recruit skilled and motivated staff. With some border exemptions for skilled agricultural roles such as machinery operators, vets, pregnancy scanners and shearers, the bulk of concern is now coming from the dairy industry. Since last winter Federated Farmers and other industry bodies have been signalling that there is a significant labour shortage looming in the dairy sector. With the borders still closed to migrants (a traditional key component of the dairy workforce) and those migrants still here continuing to head

home over time, the workforce is looking in poor shape for the coming season. Government and industry have committed serious efforts to try and attract Kiwis to work on farms. Campaigns such as Go Dairy and Mana in Mahi have had a muted response. The successful Federated Farmers and MSD Get Kiwis on Farm starter pack promotion, which offers new recruits and workers displaced from other jobs by the pandemic a complete kit of Kaiwaka wet weather gear if they take up a permanent farm role, is now in its second round. But numbers are still in the hundreds and many vacancies on farms remain unfilled. Despite this gloomy scenario, there are still some in the agricultural industries who are hopeful for a greater influx of New Zealanders over time. Farmers have long plugged the freedom of the job, being outside in the fresh air and doing an

honest day’s work. But with 90 per cent of Kiwis still living and working in urban areas, this isn’t doing the trick and we need to look to promote the other benefits of life on the farm. With our largest city in yet another lockdown, there must be some young families looking around at their 400m2 section with a million-dollar mortgage and wondering if there is a better option.

Senior and management positions on farm are increasingly well paid, usually with a big house and backyard, no commute and both parents home for lunch and dinner times with the kids. So much of what our urban workforce is worrying about has solutions that can be found in the country. As an industry we need to start promoting those on-farm benefits that we all take for granted, get the total value package of our advertised roles right and see if more urban New Zealanders might consider making the big shift to the country. So a shout out to all those farmers who are already taking a lead on this front. 4 DAILY RECIPE 3 9Kumara and pineapple salad Serves 4 7 3 large kumara can pineapple pieces in juice 1 1½xC220g walnut halves 2 ½ C chopped green capsicum 5 Dressing: 1 t grated lemon rind juice 6 ¼2 TClitepineapple olive oil Freshly ground black pepper, to taste 8■■ Scrub kumara, slice in half and boil for 2025 minutes or until softened but still firm. Drain. ■■ Slice into bite-sized chunks. ■■ Drain pineapple, reserving ¼ cup of juice for the dressing. ■■ Place kumara, pineapple, walnuts and capsicum in a bowl. ■■ Pour over the dressing and mix well. ■■ Serve either warm or chilled.

About 70 years of research data from the former Winchmore Research Station in Mid Canterbury have been put into an electronic format where it can be accessed by scientists around the world. The Winchmore field trials are the longest running trials of grazed and irrigated pasture, globally. Professor Rich McDowell of AgResearch, Lincoln, said that while these were not the longest grassland trials in the world, they were the longest of their type. Since their establishment in 1949 for the irrigation trial and 1952 for the fertiliser trial, the data have laid the foundation of productive irrigation systems that earn several billions in revenue annually in New Zealand and overseas. The initial focus on production and productivity revealed important findings on the optimal management of productive pasture. More recently the focus shifted to environmental issues such as water and soil quality. “There are quite a few advances that have come out of this small research station,” McDowell said. This was a tribute to the staff who had worked there over many decades. He has a photo of Prince Philip visiting Winchmore in 1958 to look at the irrigation trial. McDowell said work to collate and scan the data started during the Covid-19 lockdown when field work was limited. This included scanning old paper re-

of soil, pasture and fertiliser, recognising that advances in analytical techniques may lead to new discoveries. Records were also kept of sowing rates and harvest dates, climatic conditions, soil moisture, and monthly pasture production and botanical composition. About 96,000 records of soil chemistry and physical data and pasture yield and botanical composition from Winchmore are available along with nearly 7000 soil samples. These data have been used in 475 publications that have explored topics as diverse as: improvements in sheep, dairy and deer production; the efficacy and scheduling of irrigation; improvements in pasture and crop production; agronomic and environmental soil and water research; and entomology. Winchmore had even trialled some of the first crops for use in ethanol production. The borderdyke (flood) irrigation trial finished in October 2007, but the phosphate fertiliser regime has continued, even after the Winchmore farm was converted into a commercial irrigated farm operation and sold in 2018. When Winchmore was sold, the Fertiliser Association signed a 35-year lease with AgResearch to ensure the continua-

tion of the 4.1 hectare fertiliser trial. “So the trial will be over 100 years old by the end of that.” The fertiliser trial was protected with a covenant ensuring it continues to operate as normal except that irrigation from 2018 onwards is now applied by spray irrigation. Since January 2019 there are daily soil moisture meter records from a moisture meter installed into one of the control plots. Soil moisture, rainfall and irrigation are recorded. “Long-term trials are a very rare thing because of the amount of money required. “They are also very valuable, especially when you consider that some of the data is being used to calibrate global models of carbon sequestration and climate change.” This was the beauty of long-term trials; that the data could be used for science unforeseen when the trial was established, McDowell said. The intent of the Winchmore database is for it to be kept live. Updates will be made to the online shared platform as and when new data become available. Mid Canterbury dairy farmer Duncan Barr says he plans to participate in an independent review into the mycoplasma bovis eradication programme and is encouraging other local farmers to do the same. Farmers will be invited to take part in the review which was expected to take at least six months and will be shared publicly once completed. Mid Canterbury remains a hot spot for the cattle disease, with seven of the nine active cases in the district. The other two cases are dairy herds on two Lincoln University research farms. Barr, who started the Mbovis Affected Farmers support group after his run-off block was confirmed with the disease in 2018, said it was important that the review was independent and that there was farmer involvement. “It doesn’t need to be a witch hunt, but it needs some honesty in it. “It is more about bureaucratic behaviour. “It’s a terrible process. It’s not what they do, but how they do it. Unfortunately, that is not unique to the M. bovis programme,” Barr said. He hoped that the review would be wide-ranging. “The mistakes that were made with M. bovis should never have happened and should never happen again. “We need farmers to come forward and tell their stories of what actually went on,” Barr said. While the cattle disease was first identified on a dairy farm near Glenavy in South Canterbury in 2017, and is believed to have originated from a Southland dairy farm, it is Mid Canterbury that has borne the brunt of the outbreak. Mid Canterbury has had 42

It’s a terrible process. It’s not what they do, but how they do it. confirmed cases, more than any other district, out of the 260 cases in New Zealand’s largest biosecurity response. Nationally, 166,673 cattle have been culled and $191.9 million paid in compensation to farmers in a bid to eradicate the disease, with 251 farms cleared of the disease. To date $360.6m has been spent on operational costs. Federated Farmers president

Andrew Hoggard said it had been calling for an independent review since 2018. “We’ve all learnt a lot from this biosecurity response, not just MPI. “This will not be a witch-hunt to highlight all the things that didn’t go well. Rather it’s an effort to capture what we have learned so we can all be better prepared.” It was standard practice for MPI to review its biosecurity re-

sponses, but they are not normally independent reviews. “An independent review will give the results considerable clout and should give us all a solid platform to learn from and build on for future responses.” Federated Farmers was looking forward to its opportunity to feed into the review and will encourage the review panel to talk to key federation provincial people and affected farmers, Hoggard said. Programme partners DairyNZ, Beef + Lamb New Zealand and the Ministry for Primary Industries have appointed Professor Nicola Shadbolt (chair), Dr Roger Paskin, Professor Caroline Saunders and Tony Cleland to carry out the review. said it was best practice to carry out a review of an eradication programme of this scale and was also a commitment made to farmers at the start of the programme. “Eradicating M. bovis is hard work, but with the whole sector working together, we have made really good progress. “It’s important we capture what we’ve learned and utilise it for anything we might face in the future.” Beef + Lamb New Zealand chair Andrew Morrison said it supported the review. “There’s been a lot of good work by farmers and people involved in the programme and we have worked hard to make improvements. We have a philosophy of continuous improvement and this review is the next step in our journey.” Review panel chair Nicola Shadbolt said that it was important to consider what could be learnt from the M. bovis response, to strengthen New Zealand’s biosecurity system. “The government and farmers have committed a great deal of time and effort to eradicating M. bovis and it’s been a significant undertaking for everyone involved. We can learn a lot from looking at the response overall and understanding what went well from the beginning, what changed as the programme made improvements and what can be taken onboard for future biosecurity responses.” M. bovis governance group independent chair Kelvan Smith said the review has a different focus from previous reviews, such as analysis by the Technical Advisory Group, which focused on the possibility of eradication. “The eradication programme is going well, as shown by the reduced number of farms under controls over the past year. “Everyone involved has played their part and I thank everyone for their efforts to date.”

New Zealand Olympian Anton Cooper blitzed the field at the Mt Somers Bike Race for the second straight year on Saturday. Cooper was in flying form as he tore his way through the 31km of track in the heart of the iconic Mt Somers station to improve on his 2020 winning time by almost two minutes, when he crossed the finish line in 1 hour and 12:13 minutes. While he was a star on the course, race committee chair Dan Symons was more impressed at how Cooper took time out to speak with the junior riders at the prizegiving. Symons said the field of over 200 riders and walkers all seemed happy to be out on the course despite the warm conditions, and it was another successful bike race. While Cooper was in a class of his own out front, Steve Ireland was the next rider home in 1hr 15:22mins, followed by Wayne McMillan 91:16:12). Rebecca Kingsford was the fastest female clocking in at 1hr 29.28, almost three minutes clear of Sarah Gilbert (1:32:17), with Reta Trotman (1:37:14) in third. The 23km Foothills event was won by Alan Dallas in a time of 1hr 19.24 mins. Victor Schikker (1:21:09) was second followed by Andrew Bevan (1:24:26). Robyn Sewell led female field in with a time of 1hr 34.01mins with Michelle Callingham (1:46:03) in second and Vesper Woodfield (1:48:21) in third. Nerolene Free was first home in the 17km lowlands race, in 46.45mins winning the women’s race while Takoda Kaiser won the men’s section in 49:06mins. Maree Grenfell was first home in the 6.5km walk in a time of 1hr 48:57mins. Over the years the event has raised more than $220,000, and Aitken said the Mayfield District Lions will soon be able to announce how the fundraising efforts for 2021 finished up, with the main recipient to be Ronald McDonald House South Island as well as other local benefactors.

There was plenty of heat being fired out at Argyle Park on Saturday afternoon, and not just from the sun above. Action in Mid Canterbury Softball’s Senior Mixed competition took on a really competitive stance with some tight-knit games and an upset or two a long the way. Table-toppers, Hampstead Heat suffered what could be considered a shock loss to the Fairfield Ratbags in the opening game of the afternoon. Beaten 5-7, they allowed their closest rivals, Panthers to make up considerable ground on them on the points ladder. The Panthers were too good for the Hampstead Phoenix, winning 15-7, and have hit their straps at the right time with a top-of-the-table clash awaiting them this week against the Hampstead Heat. Saturday’s third game went the way of the Fairfield Ragamuffins, who

were a little too slick for their rivals the Demons Rebels. That match ended at 13-7 in favour of the Ragamuffins. Meanwhile, Hampstead’s Friday night Slow Pitch has reached the knockout stage this week with semi-final action at the Hampstead All Sports Ground. In the first semi of the night the Marines and Angels will take on Hawkies Hawks while Sits and Giggles will play Laser Attack in the other semi. The fifth and sixth playoff between Hakatere Hitters and The Reigning Champs, who will be in need of a new team name next year, will also be played. Smart Rakaia filly Sweet Belle notched up the third win of her career at Addington last Friday night. The daughter of Sweet Lou, trained and was driven by Gerard O’Reilly, made the most of a saloon run behind the leader throughout to show some class up the lane to win impressively. Raced by Methven’s Richard Ashworth, Bryan McGirr, Martin Hickman and Auckland’s Stewart Ashworth, the filly has now won three of her six career starts and netted close to $20,000 in stakes earnings. Her success continued what is fast becoming a standout season for O’Reilly, with the win his eighth training success for the term. It’s come from just 38 starters, showing off an impressive strike rate. O’Reilly has built a strong team who all look capable of winning a few more races this season, with talented types like Sweet Belle, Ifyousayso, Striking Gladiator and A Rocknroll Star. The eight wins are still six off being O’Reilly’s best for a season, with 14 wins his best mark set in the 2009-2010 season. The driving success also took him to within four wins of 600 career driving wins. He could add to that when he jumps behind Ifyousayso at Addington tomorrow. The smart pacer has been impressive winning his last two on end, and a repeat of the last start effort would see him go close again.

Angel Of Montana sprouts wings You could be forgiven for thinking Angel Of Montana sprouted wings down the home straight at Rangiora on Saturday. The Bettor’s Delight filly flew home late from the rear of the field to nab Haiti Franco on the line to win by a half head, and in the process she gave Ashburton trainer Stephen Anderson his first win as a trainer – a result he was ecstatic about. “I was pleased to get it off my back. I am very happy about it,” he said. “She was very good, particularly after drawing the second line.” Angel Of Montana finished runner-up first-up at Oamaru last week, and he said a gear change assisted his filly on Saturday. “I put the pulldown blinds on her today and Robbie (Close, driver) thought that made a difference,” he said. “She didn’t take the passing lane at Oamaru as quick as she should have, but she was still fighting at the end.” Previously trained by Barry Purdon and Scott Phelan at Clevedon, Angel Of Montana came into Anderson’s care after his grandson, Connor Harker, thought he needed an interest in another horse after selling his only stable runner, Social Media, offshore.

First training win for Ashburton’s Stephen Anderson

To the naked eye, you’d say she didn’t, but Angel Of Montana (outside) gets up to win at Rangiora last weekend. Harker saw Angel Of Montana on online auction house standardbred.gavelhouse.com and thought she fitted the bill, going to $12,000 to secure the former northerner. Anderson has fallen in love with the mare and said she is a complete contrast from her more boisterous stable predecessor. “My grandson and his mate bought her off gavelhouse for me because I sold Social Media to Australia. He reckoned I needed something to do, so he went and

bought her,” Anderson said. “She is a beautiful horse to do anything with. Social Media was either trying to bite me or kick me. This one is a totally different horse altogether.” Anderson said he fulfilled a lifelong ambition on Saturday, with the former dairy farmer wanting to carry on in the training footsteps of his father, John Anderson. “I did that in honour of my old man, I was using his colours,” Anderson said.

“That was my ambition – to get a horse on the track and win a race for him. “I took my licence out just a bit over three years ago. It was a bucket list thing, I have always been interested in racing, but I was dairy farming most of the time and I didn’t have the time to do that sort of thing.” Angel Of Montana is the only horse Anderson has in work, but he said he enjoys getting up to work her at Ashburton Raceway every morning.

“We live in town and I am training out of the racecourse at Ashburton,” he said. “I am in a barn with Terry McMillan, who gives me good advice, and Nigel Perkins. I enjoy the camaraderie between us.” Angel Of Montana will get a shot at adding another win to the tally this weekend when she lines up on her home track of Ashburton in the Nevele R Fillies Heat on the Ashburton Trotting Club’s big day, Sapling Stakes and Hambletonian Day.

The Browning Shield is Mid Canterbury’s shield, once again. After seven years of complete domination of the Canterbury Country Tennis title, Mid Canterbury made it eight straight victories on the weekend when they yet again were too good for neighbouring rivals North Canterbury, Malvern and Ellesmere at Wilding Park on Saturday and Sunday, albeit with a few nail-biting moments late in the tournament. Speak with anyone involved in tennis in this district about the importance of the Browning Shield tournament, and they’ll be able to enthuse for hours about it, and what is clearly evident is the amount of groundwork that goes in to ensure that Mid Canterbury is taking the best possible team along to compete in it each year. “There’s been a lot of development in recent years of a huge number of players,” Mid Canterbury Tennis manager and head coach, Jack Tiller said. “Right from hot shots at a young age, there is now a really strong pathway for people to work their way through to compete in an event like the Browning Shield. “And because of the close-knit nature of tennis locally, it really is like a big family and everyone is out there to cheer for everyone; it’s great to be a part of.” Playing six games of singles in both men’s and women’s, three games of doubles in both men’s and women’s and six mixed doubles games each against each other region, Mid Canterbury set the tone early. They began on Saturday morning with North Canterbury and lost only three games in the entire round, to really announce

They followed that up with an almost-as-dominant victory against Malvern on Saturday afternoon, where they won 18 of the 24 matches. That set up a final round tussle with Ellesmere, who had also breezed through their first two rounds with comfortable wins. After the first round of play, the men’s and women’s singles, the scores were level, but Mid Canterbury’s strength in the singles saw them draw clear with five wins in the men’s singles to Tiller, Sam Bubb, Cam McCracken, Rhys Cromie and Jason Feutz, and Tessa McCann, Ashleigh Leonard, Maia Liu and Jade Brosnahan in the women’s singles, to

see Mid Canterbury leading 12-6 heading into the mixed doubles. That meant Ellesmere would have needed to clean-sweep the mixed doubles to win the title – anything less would see Mid Canterbury retain the shield. “We knew the magic number was 13, get to there and you can’t be beaten,” Tiller said. In a heart-in-the-mouth kind of scenario, Ellesmere picked up five of the mixed doubles matches, but victory for Tiller and Leonard sealed the deal and Mid Canterbury were victorious once again. “Getting that last win was huge, we were all really stoked to go up there and do it again. “It’s getting to the point now where everyone is out to get us,

so to be able to withstand that challenge and win again is a massive result.” The Mid Canterbury effort was led by an unbeaten display of tennis by Tiller, who won all seven matches he competed in over the course of the tournament, in an effort which saw him the leading player across all teams. If there was one standout strength to the Mid Canterbury play over the weekend it was in the singles discipline, where they won nearly 84 per cent of their matches.

Compare that to North Canterbury who won 50 per cent of their singles games, Malvern who won 39 per cent and Ellesmere who won 58 per cent, and there was a very clear distinction between Mid Canterbury and the rest of the pack. Ultimately, that provided the difference. Allenton’s horror run to begin 2021 in the Canterbury Country Combined competition extended another week on Saturday, when they were comprehensively beaten by Greendale. It’s been a frustrating start to the second half of the season for the Allenton lads who now, with three weeks remaining, will need to pull off a minor miracle if they are to even consider the prospect of playing finals cricket. On Saturday, they had a good chance to get things back on track – but again, let themselves down with the bat, with too many players making solid starts only to lose their wickets cheaply. After winning the toss and choosing to bat, the top three members of the batting line-up were back inside the shed within six overs, and automatically their backs were collectively against the wall. A 71-run eighth wicket stand saved the in-

nings from being a complete write-off though, with Jagjit Singh hitting 45 and Balkaran Singh adding an unbeaten 44 to see Allenton through to 167 for nine after their 40 overs. In reply, Greendale made light work of the run chase and reached the target with four wickets in hand and five overs still to be bowled. Allenton threw everything they could at the challenge, using seven bowlers in all, but lone wickets to Mana Singh, Jagjit Singh, Jaideep Singh and Hasdeep Singh were all they were rewarded with for their efforts. Allenton will now have to regather this week and refocus on the task at hand with three games remaining if they are to salvage something from the second half of their season. They play Weedons this week away from home, Peninsula Harbour at home on March 6 before taking on Kaiapoi in the final round of pool play for the year. There is hope within that set-up as all three teams currently sit underneath Allenton on the points table, with this weekend’s match against Weedons, who are yet to win a match, a great opportunity to change fortunes.

Momentum, it’s a beautiful thing and right now the Tech Stags are full of it. After a strong second half of their breakout season in the South Canterbury senior cricket competition, the Ashburton-based side are now in a position to push for a home playoff spot this weekend after a strong victory over Star on the weekend. They sit third equal on points with Celtic Cricket Club, but are ranked fourth based on a lower net run rate. But as if it was a show of fate, the two sides will meet this weekend in a match that will determine where the two sides meet again the following week in the third-and-fourth match. Instead of straight semi-finals, the playoffs will see the top two teams play each other with the winner advancing, and the loser playing the winner of the thirdand-fourth playoff. Neither Tech nor Celtic can finish any lower or higher than either third or fourth, with Pleasant Point and Temuka filling the top two spots. On the Ashburton Domain Oval on Saturday, Star won the toss and elected to take the ball on a good wicket under perfect cricketing conditions. When Jason Morrison fell within the first over that looked the right decision. Thirty-two overs later when the second wicket fell, it wasn’t. Ryan Bell strode out to the crease at first drop to replace Morrison, and he and Callum Gallagher (33) went about building a 113-run third wicket stand to really set the platform for the Tech middle order to come out and pile on the runs. After Gallagher departed, Mr Reliable – Des Kruger – (58) joined Bell, and they added 72, with the score at 190-3 after the 43rd over when Bell eventually fell just short of a century on 91.

With seven overs to score some runs, the tempo increased and Sam Clark’s arrival in the middle proved the perfect foil for what Tech needed to achieve. Clark took to the Star bowlers, smashing an unbeaten 46 in just 20 balls to push a good-looking score of around 210-220 to a slightly more daunting 266 for five when the 50 overs were done.

After their solid effort with the bat, Tech just needed to deliver with the ball, and two quick wickets at the top of the innings had Star in trouble early. They did manage a bit of a comeback, but wickets at the right time kept the pressure on and Star were never really able to get their own momentum going, and were eventually bowled

out for 204 in the final over of the innings. All of the Tech bowlers contributed to the innings, with four players claiming braces – Richard Print, Harry Jones, Matt Pawsey and Matt Tait. Print (2-25 off 10) and Jones (228 off 10) were particularly tough for the Star batsmen to contend with.

A contingent of Mid Canterbury bowlers will make their way down to Central Otago this week for the National Fours and Mixed Pairs championships which begin tomorrow. Play is being spread across the region for the next four days, where national champions will be found in three events. Allenton’s Sandra Keith will be out to defend her women’s fours title alongside teammates Clare Hendra, Selina Smith and Tayla Bruce. The quartet won the title last year and are again leading contenders in 2021. Keith won’t have to look too far behind her to find a familiar face, with fellow Allenton bowler Rachel Davies slotting into a powerhouse team as she hunts her first national title. Davies will team up with bowling legends Jo Edwards and Val Smith, as well as Debbie White, in a formidable foursome. Keith and Davies battled out the Allenton club singles on Sunday afternoon, with Keith claiming the victory. Keith will also be in action in the mixed pairs event, playing with well-known Nelson bowler, Pete Hodson in what is a very strong combination. Joining them in the pairs action will be Methven’s Rob and Lyn Fensom and Allenton’s Gary and Wendy Blackwell. One men’s fours team from Mid Canterbury will head south to try and find glory at the tournament, with Richard Kane, Neil Atkinson, Shane Calder and John Drayton combining to try and push for higher honours. Qualifying action in the fours begins tomorrow and runs through until Friday evening with knockout play over the weekend. Mixed pairs action kicks off on Monday with knockout play beginning on Tuesday morning and running through until Wednesday, March 3.

LEARY DIGS DEEP It was a day for the front markers in the Tinwald Cycling Club’s, Netherby Meats, 48km handicap event around the Grahams Road block on Sunday. Nigel Leary dug deep to maintain the tight margin he had over the chasing duo of Helen Bancroft and Liz Wylie. Leary held on to record the victory and lift the McElhinney Trophy. Bancroft prevailed in the sprint to the line claiming second place from Wylie. They would have been well aware of a solid bunch of riders bearing down on them in the concluding stages. Gary Weston had the best of the bunch charge to the line to secure fourth place, Michelle Knight had a great race to take fifth, with Chris Reid backing up from last week’s good effort rounding out the top six. Tony Ward led in a solid group of scratch markers to claim fastest time honours, riding the course in a quick

65.33. Kyle Gray and Larry Neal secured second and third time. The juniors and division 2 battled it out over 16km. Zac Brookland produced a sterling effort to take the win and lift the major spoils, while Ella Turnbull turned in another good performance to claim second place. Last week’s winner Daniel Gould rode strongly to take third place, and James Reid was right in the hunt with a top ride to take fourth spot. Fifth place getter Mitch Brookland secured fastest time honours, riding the distance in 26.17. Honor Bradford was right in the mix, securing sixth place. A good field of division 2 riders were led in by Lisa Turnbull. Second place getter Brian Ellis secured fastest time honours, with Debbie Skinner stepping onto the final podium position. Next week the club heads to Hinds to contest a 50km handicap event.

Ashburton quartet nabs Keith Memorial BOWLS

A long-standing bowling trophy went on the line at Hampstead on the weekend, when 14 teams took the green for the annual Sandy Keith Memorial Fours on Sunday. Keith was one of Ashburton’s finest lawn bowlers, and was the father of former New Zealand representative and former world champion, Sandra Keith who was on hand to present the trophy on Sunday afternoon. “This year is 20 years since Dad died,” Keith told players and followers at the prizegiving. “And it’s pretty fitting because I think all four members of the winning team will have played with him at some point.” The winning side was the Ashburton Bowling Club quartet of Gavin Eder, John Smart, Graham

Taylor and Winston Lee, who finished the day’s play with three wins from their four games and 26 ends won. They finished two ends clear of the second placed team of Pat McElwain, Raylene Heads, Faye McKnight and Barry Molloy, while Corey O’Connor, Mick Buchanan, Melva Middleton and Kelvin O’Connor were in third spot. Played in warm conditions, the 56 players on the green were treated to an entertaining day of play, with plenty of laughter and fun throughout the day’s proceedings. Silver stars were the order of the day on Saturday, when three players achieved a notable milestone at the Champion of Champion Fours playoffs at the Allenton Bowling Club. Rosemary Bennett, Sandra Holdom and Brent Mayson all picked up their Silver Star for their tenth sub centre titles when they played a part in their respective teams winning on the day. Bennett and Holdom were a part of the Allenton Bowling Club’s senior women’s side who produced two outstanding performances to win their title. They took on Rakaia and were successful in the semi-final, before tackling Ashburton in a close-fought affair, winning the final 18-16. The duo was joined by Wendy Watson and Anne Reid.

Mayson was a part of the winning Methven senior men’s side, who defeated Allenton in the morning before beating Hampstead in the semi-final and then Ashburton MSA in the final. Methven won that fixture 1713. The two junior finals were all-Allenton and Hampstead affairs, with the titles shared evenly. Allenton won the junior men’s final 24-9, while the Hampstead ladies clawed one back when they defeated Allenton 22-11 in their final. The Champion of Champion triples were to be the next leg in the sub centre playoffs race and were to be held this weekend, however it was advised over the weekend that they had been postponed and a new date would be confirmed in due course.

A correction to an entry in last week’s report – in the Men’s Gala Cup Final, Ashburton’s team of M Hill, B Donaldson, M Anderson, J Kewish defeated Methven 16–13 (16-12 had been reported). Well done again, gentlemen! The Greenkeepers Triples at MSA on the 14th, Ashburton’s J Kewish, as part of a composite team came 2nd, and in 4th place was the Ashburton team of A McKenzie, D Kinvig P Collins. The Champion of Champions Fours held at Allenton on the 21st, in the Senior Women’s section Ashburton defeated Methven 17 – 9 in the semi finals; in the Final we were defeated by Allenton by the narrow margin of 18–16. The Dahlia circle meeting and table show was held last week on the 16th February. President Brian Glassey opened the meeting with 5 apologies and 14 members in attendance plus two visitors. The group discussed the coming Combined show held with the Christurch group in the Tinwald Hall Sunday March 7. Do put this as a must see in you diary, it will be open to the public from 1pm to 4pm. Also a request by our new members to have a demonstration of blooms suitable for this day and how to present them. So two dates have been set on Friday 26th and Sunday 28th February 4pm at Joyce’s house 16 Baker St. Non-members who would like to attend this workshop are more that welcome to come along to this informal time. Now for the show of the evening, it was so well supported. Thank you to all, particularly to our new members with six displaying their blooms. A photographer from the ‘National Geographic’ came with Jeannette Cuthbertson to record setting up the hall and tabling entries, from the bare room to a mass display. The magazine is featuring an article on Dahlias. The photographer attended the North Island National Show and visited some dahlia gardens while up there. Now is working her way down to the South Island Show being held in Invercargill. While in Ashburton she visited several members’ gardens to take photos, as is the case we have no idea what photos may be used. At the National show last week John and Jeannette Cuthbertson took out the top prize Champion of Champions with a 3 bloom vase of Embrace. Congratulations, no mean feat to think they travelled up to Hamilton carrying them in a polystyrene box on the plane. It didn’t seem we’d left off at all. Here we all were again music abounds for yet another year. Nice to see everyone back, with the exception of a dear member Neil White. Neil has been a forever member and was a constant joy to listen to his renditions on both the organ and keyboard. We remembered him with a minutes silence, and our thoughts go out to Karen. Bev Stevens our President mentioned two big O birthdays coming up, and thanked

Our guest speaker Mac McElwain ‘the Guitar Man from Methven’, gave a most in-depth and fascinating insight to his guitar making venture known as Blackford Guitars. Previously farming Blackford Station, Mac covered, in intriguing detail, the journey of slabs of wood forming the foundation for the end products – guitars. Rimu and Totara were two favourites of many New Zealand timbers. Mac outlined in detail the sequence of the ‘Journey’ from wood to guitar, for example, sourcing the timber often in blocks, to the body of the guitar back, front, base, sides, head, handle, neck and so on. Mac explained whilst not knowing every connection, it is the most emotive and magic feeling to finally play the finished instrument. Much to his delight (and the audience) Manny Sim played ‘Rainy Night’ and ‘My Elusive Dream’ on different guitars and was rapt with the different sounds. John Brown thanked the speaker and summed it up admirably by saying it was a most unusual and intriguing topic and he was ‘hooked’ right from the start. Tail Twisters Colin Morgan and Chrissy Milne weaved their usual magic, raffles were drawn and that completed a most interesting evening. President Roger concluded by stating next month’s Club meeting is a Partners night on Wednesday March 3 with a guest speaker of much promise to address the meeting.

Bev French for her welcoming play in. Jill Stephen, a relatively new members had the first get-to-gether of the years programme to organise. Not an easy task to get those who would still be here and not away, and fitting in practices for their various items. But she produced a marvellous evening’s enterainment and thank you all to those who got their items together. Lanae and Bruce Hill started the evening with their usual flair and we were thrilled with their choices, played on guitar, harmonica, banjo, and vocal, and harmony of course. Thanks for popping in. I loved “you light up my life” and of course laneas original song for her Mother. Bernard’s dance band from Barmoral days brought back fond memories. Few fill ins from original but still playing. Robin’s ukulele group put together a handful of country songs. We had a few missing but we did ok. Thanks Robin for doing a great job. As per usual, the practices were a laugh a minute. Alan Andrews has a new toy in his Medeli digital piano. A keyboard but with the full 88 keys. Two of the tunes he played: Pokarekare, and Closer walk with Thee, gave us an idea of the sound. Good luck and happy times with that Alan. Janet and Iris represented the keyboard group. We are low on numbers and 3 were away, so we sorted some duets and single playing between us. One of my favourites together was Danny Kaye’s “Five pennies” One of Janets, “me and Bobby Magee. Gee there’s some nice songs around. Lanae and Bruce returned to send us off for the evening with a selection of popular tunes. “Take these chains” “Your Cheatin’ Heart, and more. Thank you guys.Thank you to those who served the cuppa, and well done Jill. In spite of our above club title, we have many club members who play multiple instruments enabling us to vary our evenings, so you out there don’t think “I don’t play the organ or keyboard”. Come along and listen in, we need to boost our player list, as well as audience participation.

I thought I would have a Saturday off last week, so am not really sure how the “Hidden holes” stableford was played, but as in most games, the cream will always rise to the top and I see that Kevin Smith took out the Radius Care player of the day closely followed by Gordy Crawford. Well done to all prize winners. This Saturday we have our first qualifier for the Club Champs. A stroke round off the Blue tees, the course will be in great condition, the forecast looks good, so get out there and put down a good marker for your Club champs score. We will be having 5 qualifying rounds across the season, with your best 2 getting you into the knockout rounds in September. If you have any ambition of reaching the knockouts, then this weekend is the one to play, because I am sure it won’t play as well through the winter. Talking about the course, we will have a visit from the top NZ golf bigwigs in early March, to have a walk through the course and club ahead of the Interprovincials later in the year. After the visit, I will call a meeting of the volunteer group to go through any issues brought up. Pennants is almost upon us and the Brandon club has its most teams playing for many a season. We have 2 teams in the top grade Holmes section, 1 in the Redpath, 2 in the Patterson, 1 in the Alex and 2 playing old mans hit and giggle on Mondays. Obviously all the attention will be on the 2 Patterson teams, and the elite Ashburton #1 team held their trial on Sunday. It is plain to see that the rigorous pre season training schedule has been followed to a T. Everyone looked like real golfers from the first tee shot, to the last downed Guiness in Kelly’s. Our guest speaker was Daphne Rissman, Daphne is a National Rose Judge, she gave a great presentation on how to transport roses to protect them and tips on how to stage your roses so they look their best for the standard required for showing. There are three main groups for showing – Decorative, Exhibition and Fully open. Daphne has over 700 roses in her country garden and her definition of w.w.w. is water, weeds, work. Several questions were asked on spraying and pruning. Another great table show with 89 entries from 7 exhibitors, there was a very impressive display of dahlias of all colours, sizes and varieties. Ashburton Inner Wheel

Formed in England by Mrs Margaret Golding on January 10th 1924 marks the first Inner Wheel meeting. Ashburton Inner Wheel branch celebrates this day annually with Sunday 10th January 2021 no exception with almost 50 members, family and friends having a delicious meal in a local restaurant. Lots of merriment and chatter made this an enjoyable event. Our February meeting was held in the Gallery room at Hotel Ashburton when new office bearers were appointed for the ensuing year, with the changeover taking place later in the year. Our President told us of the three Cs of life being: Choices, Chances, and Changes. You must make the Choice to take a Chance if you want anything in life to Change. The walking group has started again for 2021 meeting at Argyle Park followed by time for coffee. The Stitch up craft group meets on the 4th Wednesday of each month from 10am-12md in various homes and the Ukulele group commences on March 3rd.

Ashburton Toastmasters Club

Another convivial Ashburton Toastmasters Club meeting was held on February 10, with Rebecca as Toastmistress of the evening. Alison introduced the word of the evening, ‘mercurial, a challenging word however many of our members managed to incorporate it into their speeches. The first speech of the evening was Mariana with an interesting plan on getting young people into church. Mariana has now completed Level 2 of Pathways, the formal education programme of Toastmasters International. Our second speaker was Adi with an excellent demonstration of cultural communication clashes, many of us could relate very well to the examples he presented. The third speaker was Deirdre, with a very funny account of her (brief) life as a film star with humorous insights of what goes on behind the scenes of creating television ads and Shortland Street. Table Topics was a smorgasboard of questions: Who Inspires You (Mum), What is classy

now but used to be Trashy (Tattoos), Mayo on Fries? (a resounding NO from newcomer Jake), What to do during the last week on Earth (Skydiving in Spain), Advice to younger Self (Save), What you could do as a child but no longer (Backflips) and the Worst Smell experienced. After a short tea break we had a good hour of evaluations, which are a key aspect of our meetings. It helps us all to improve our speeches as well as evaluation skills. We have 4 members competing in the District’s International Speech and Evaluation competition on the 24th of February. Toastmasters International have stipulated these competitions to be run via Zoom so there will not be a Club meeting that night, and members are able to zoom in and support our competitors Phil Wheeler, Matt Marshall, Mark Lester and Coby Snowden). The next meeting at the Doris Linton Lounge at RSA will be on the 10th of March 7.30pm, meetings are held fortnightly and everyone is welcome. For more information find us on Facebook.

Lions Club Of Ashburton

February meeting – the first for 2021 was held at Hotel Ashburton on Wednesday 3 February. President Roger Paterson presided over a good attendance and welcomed members and guest speakers Mac McElwain and his wife Pat. Club business included Lions Club visits to Methven Lions on 24 February and Rakaia Lions on 10 March. Robert Keeley and Phil Lynch outlined the South Island Motorhome Show planning. Steve Thomas has agreed to co-ordinate the Methven Show gate. Jeff King updated the good response for the Big Smoke Rural Folk Challenge and Rod Green covered the Child Cancer Foundation Day. Sue Letham is co-ordinating the ‘Bulbs for Hope’ cause. On the social side of activities, Sunday 28 February sees Colin Morgan running a social Car Trial starting at 1.30pm from the old camping ground in the Domain. Mike Hanham reported on a great 4 wheel drive trip to the Conway Kaikoura area of North Canterbury. Rex Whiting requested guidance when organising a trip to either Erewhon or Mesopotamia. President Roger thanked those concerned in organising the Old Lusk Engineering building for storing the food van and Club equipment. He also requested our Club’s backing for the upcoming Lions Convention in Waimate to show our support for Garth Bateup. Lion George Brown encouraged members to promote to people of all ages to consider the value of applying for the Berwick Outdoor Experience. Due to Covid 19 there was no Berwick course last year hence the

President Carl welcomed 45 members to the first meeting of the year.( seated 1 metre apart due to level 2 covid rules). There were 17 apologies and 1 visitor, Ian Wright. Roger Lake spoke about a proposed trip to Geraldine next month. Our mini speaker this morning was Austin Lysaght who was born and educated in Ashburton. He was from a family of 3 girls and 2 boys, who’s father was a fat lamb drafter, so consequently his early working life was involved in sheep droving and helping dad draft sheep. Most stock was transported by rail, and the roads didn’t have much traffic. He and his wife had 5 children and raised them in a small house on 12 acres where they ran chickens and calves. House cows in those days were in demand for the milk to feed lambs. He continued farming until his retirement a few years ago, but commented on the changes today with the building and transport industry. Our main speaker was James McKenzie, who left New Zealand in the mid 80s and went to college and university in the UK. He studied nuclear fusion and electro magnetic’s (which could be the future power generation) before moving to Jaguar automotive and travelled extensively in Europe. Back in New Zealand in 2006 he became the manager of the Mt Hutt ski field and spoke about the instillation of the new 8 seater chairlift which should be operating this coming season This chairlift will be able to operate in stronger winds and only take 2 minutes (instead of 11 minutes for the previous one) to get to the top. He is also involved in the construction of the new hot pools in Methven which will draw water from the RDR canal. This will be filtered and heated through solar panels. There will be an adults pool, which will have a bar, and also a separate family pool. The water will be stored in insulated holding tanks over night to conserve the heat. The system also has back-up heat pumps if required. He also spoke about the financing of the project and associated hold-ups. James was presented with a fruit tray and thanked by Ken Borland. The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem.

MSA Golf Section

Last Sunday members of the golf section travelled over to Glentunnel to play on the beautiful Hororata course. The weather was hot and so was some of the golf with a few good scores being recorded. Leading the way was Kay Fox with a great score of 43 stableford points followed by Roger Irvine and Di Bell on 38 points with Bruce Sampson and Jacqui Beardsley also playing under their handicaps on 37 points. Closest to the pin prizes were awarded to Judy Webb and Steve Stratford. The day was capped off nicely with a few well-deserved cold ones in their club house. Congratulations to Judy, Trish and Marilyn for doing so well in the Harvey Norman golf tournament. Next game is on the 14th March at Greendale.

The Ashburton Rowing Club fraternity made sure their presence was felt at the National Rowing Championships on Lake Ruataniwha near Twizel, which wrapped up on the weekend, with some strong performances. And while there were many highlights from the days of rowing, it was the success of Isabel Wall in the A Final of the open para singles scull with a dominant performance on the water that was most notable. Wall was 13 seconds clear of her nearest rival in the final, beating East Coast rower

Gavin Foulsham into second with Anthony Spijkerman finishing third. The surname Wall kept up its proud record of being a name worth remembering in rowing circles throughout the championships with former Ashburton College rower and multi Maadi Cup winner, Veronica Wall also to the fore. Competing for Southern Rowing, representing Ashburton, and also for the Rowing New Zealand team – Wall put all her class on the water to win the A Final of the women’s Under 22 single sculls, with a six second victory. She combined with Kathryn Glen in the Under 22 double sculls and picked up another success when they won their A Final as well.

Wall’s week closed with an appearance in the Women’s Premier Coxless Quad Sculls when they finished third in a line-up of some of the most exciting female rowers in the country. Her week was capped off with selection in the Rowing New Zealand Under 23 and Winter Training Squad trials, which puts her in contention for Paris 2024 Olympic selection. Gerard Wall was also in fine action over the course of the championships. He made his way through to the men’s club singles sculls A Final where he placed fourth after winning his heat, and then finishing third in the semi-final. He joined forces with Matthew Pearce to claim fourth in the B Final of the men’s

single sculls while Pearce also made an appearance in the A Final of the men’s intermediate singles sculls. Wall formed part of the men’s coxless quad sculls team rowing for Canterbury and that quartet was successful in winning their B Final. Other good results from Ashburton rowers included the men’s intermediate coxed quad sculls finishing fifth in their A Final event. That team consisted of Zane Cameron, Riley Harris, Henry Wallis, Mitch Taylor and Charles Savage. The same combination also competed in the men’s intermediate coxed quad sculls where they placed fourth in the B Final.
