‘Wait and see’ around health shake-up for Mid Canterbury By Adam Burns adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

Too early to tell, but possible opportunities. That was the sentiment of Ashburton community leaders who hope smaller communities are “given a fair go” as a result of the biggest health sector shake-up in decades. An announcement by health officials of an overhaul of the sector, where the 20 district health boards would be replaced by a national entity, Health NZ, was still being digested by Mid Canterbury figures this week. Ashburton District Deputy Mayor Liz McMillan said it was a “wait and see” proposition, in terms of how the district could benefit. “It’s really tricky to say how it will pan out,” she said.“It’s a huge shake-up. “All we have to do is advocate for our community and that’s all you can do.” The reforms also include the formation of a Maori Health Authority, which would “have the power to directly commission health services for Maori”. A spokesman for Te Runanga o Arowhenua Marae was not willing to comment as iwi representatives evaluated the restructure, although it would be issuing a statement in the coming days. input into how health services are provided,” he said. “If they don’t focus on that meaningful engagement with local communities then it probably won’t be successful. “We shouldn’t be frightened of change.” Ashburton District Mayor Neil Brown ex-

pressed concerns last year around the recommendations unveiled in the Health and Disability System Review. In response to the Simpson report, Brown feared there would be a loss of democracy and accountability if there was a reduction of district health boards. Similar concerns were expressed by National Party health spokesperson Dr Shane Reti this week, who said scrapping DHBs would result in regions and smaller communities losing their voices and autonomy. McMillan hoped smaller districts like Ashburton would benefit from a departure from what had been described as a “postcode lottery of care”. “I’m hoping that’s the case,” she said. “It’s just making sure our district gets a fair go.” The Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) said in a statement, that it believed it was well positioned to respond to the reforms. “We expect changes made as a result of [the announcement] will support our ongoing efforts to integrate more services regionally and strive for more equitable health outcomes for our communities,” CDHB chief executive Dr Peter Bramley said. “We are committed to providing transparency as we work through any confirmed changes and will be supporting our staff throughout the implementation process.”

The rubber stamping of a $42 million Ashburton Library and Civic Centre build project has been hailed as an historic moment for the district. Several councillors gathered alongside commercial contractors Naylor Love yesterday at the Ashburton site, where the build contract was officially signed off. Ashburton District Mayor Neil Brown said it was a momentous occasion for both the council and the wider community. “We are delighted to entrust the construction of this important community asset to a long-standing, award-winning company with a proven track record delivering large scale projects right across New Zealand,” he said. Naylor Love Canterbury regional director Graeme Earl said the firm was thrilled to be delivering such a major project for Mid Canterbury.

“Ashburton’s new library and civic centre will serve residents for decades to come, utilising some of the latest efficiencies in modern construction. The construction company giants have completed several major civic projects throughout the country, including the Ashburton EA Networks Centre. Contractors are currently in the process of embedding about 180 piles at the site, on the corner of Havelock Street and Baring Square East, with construction expected to commence around July. The Ashburton District Council signed off on a $51.6 million budget for the project but added a further $5 million to its budgeted total earlier this year due to the implications of Covid-19. The $42 million build contract did not include costs for enabling works, design and professional fees, information technology and project contingencies. The project will be partially funded by a $20 million Government shovel-ready contribution.

‘Hundreds’ of vacancies concern Labour shortage constraining businesses By Malcolm Hopwood

Projects and jobs in Mid Canterbury are being put on the backburner because of the labour shortage. Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury president, David Clark, says businesses are having to make do with what they have rather than develop further. “The capacity of businesses across Mid Canterbury is constrained because of the shortage,” he said. “It’s hard to put a figure on vacancies at present but it’s in the hundreds.” In Mid Canterbury, there were shortages on dairy farms, contracting, transport and most of the trades, he said. David Clark talks about a disconnect. He argues there are people on various Covid-19 subsidies or job seeker benefits who were unwilling to work yet, in some areas of New Zealand, there was

centive to work yet those people should “get out and contribute to our society in the work force,”

Clark said. In particular, he pointed out that many young people were leaving school without a work ethic installed in them. “We need to work with our secondary and trades institutions so we can capture the imagination of school leavers,’’ he said. “There are great careers in agriculture, transport or what our trades can provide.” In addition, Clark argues the New Zealand Government must revisit the contribution that migrant workers make to the country’s economy. “If New Zealanders are unwilling to work, there needs to be a freeing up of the current restrictions on visas to allow them in.’’ He points to local farms traditionally having near to full employment “on the back of a diverse and vibrant agricultural sector.” Seasonal overseas workers have travelled here to be involved in harvesting and many immigrant families, employed in the

About this time every year Anzac biscuits become a specialty of the house. Sim’s Bakery in Tinwald produce about 500 packets of biscuits to meet local demand. While they’re not as big a seller as their pies, Anzac biscuits are baked for the major commemorative events throughout the year. Owners, Carmen and Glenn Ross, ensure the biscuits are “golden crunch, flavoured with rolled oats and coconut”. There’s also a secret ingredient known only to them. Sim’s five bakers start their shift at 1am. Glenn arrives to supervise the bake at 4am and Carmen follows an hour later. They estimate they sell about

2000 items of food daily, with pies, cakes, bread and savouries being popular. They even offer a Sim’s special, it’s a truckie’s steak, cheese and bacon pie, which is larger than their usual variety. Carmen’s great-grandfather started the business in Rangiora in 1919 and Sim’s Bakery came to Tinwald via Hinds in 1960. There’s another speciality that travelling motorists love. Glenn explains that too many customers can’t wait to get home to eat their food or are on their way north or south, so his pies have a flat top. That apparently reduces the amount of pastry that litters the car and clogs the environment. It may be just as easy to stick to that icon of a biscuit, the Anzac special.

Week one into the school holidays and sometimes it can be hard to know how to fill up those 14 days. Well, Ashburton is doing its best. It has a variety of activities for the children of the district and many are free. Places like the Ashburton Pub-

A few extra ideas of inspiration for you and your kids these school holidays include: 1) Paint rocks and hide them in the domain, a close by park or playground. 2) Get the Lego out of the cupboard and have a competition of who can make the coolest

car, or the funniest house. 3) If you were OK with electrical tape on carpet, make a racetrack for Lego cars or Hot Wheels cars. 4) Do some baking for a friend or family member, or for your local fire brigade or St John (or all of them). 5) Dress up as pirates and have a treasure hunt with a series of clues. Mid Canty sports administrators take aim at Long-Term Plan By Adam Burns adam.b@theguardian.co.nz

Doubts around the development of a community sports hub in Ashburton has frustrated some of the region’s biggest sporting organisations. Administrators from Sport Canterbury, the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union and Mid Canterbury Netball have filed submissions to the Ashburton District Council on its Long-Term Plan 2021-31 proposals, which closed earlier this week. The appeals were sparked by council’s position to put plans for a multimillion dollar community sports hub – on land adjoining the EA Networks Centre – on hold as it explores other options. “We have paused these projects while we undertake research on the best way to utilise the centre, and they may be rescheduled in our next 10 year plan, if appropriate,” council said in its LongTerm Plan document. Mid Canterbury Rugby Union chief executive Ian Patterson said the move was unacceptable in a submission to council. “Words such as ‘paused’ and ‘maybe’ after all the community effort that has gone into the EA Stadium . . . are disappointing to

The first South Island passenger train journey for some time will roll into Ashburton late next Monday morning.

The heritage trip down the main trunk line from Blenheim to Invercargill was intended to be pulled by the Marlborough Flyer - steam locomotive Ab608 - but its involvement only extends from Blenheim to Kaikoura. The Pounamu Tourism Group, which has organised the journey, said that due to a shortage of qualified KiwiRail steam crew it was “deemed not safe enough to proceed with steam motive power in some regions of the tour.”

Instead, the historic carriages will be hauled by two Da heritage diesel locomotives built in the 1950s. The train arrives in Ashburton at 11.15am on Monday and then returns at 3.45pm on May 3. News of the train’s arrival would rekindle memories from local residents, who would recall The Southerner, which operated between Christchurch and Invercargill from 1970 to 2002.

Mid Canterbury Netball president Ange Mitchell also challenged council as to why it had deviated from its plans in its correspondence. “[Our] understanding was that that it (EA Networks Centre) was going to get even better, and the work which has now been paused was budgeted,” she said. “We wish to know where this has gone.” Council had previously set aside plans to develop sports fields at the EA Networks Centre, alongside a climbing wall, new learner pool and splash deck. A draft master plan was developed in 2017 which explored 8.5 hectares of land dedicated to various sporting codes. The project was expected to cost about $4.3 million. Sport Canterbury regional manager Jan Cochrane said the quality-of-life benefits were not always considered when it came to the debate on sporting facilities. “It is hard to argue, though, that one main benefit of a new sports facility comes from the improved quality of life of the surrounding community,” she said. “It is important that the project is progressed not paused as stated in the Long-Term Plan.

Big deal for Barbora on birthday By Malcolm Hopwood

Barbora Padertova’s horoscope on her birthday was “a little recipe can be a big deal”. Barbora, a Pisces, had walked 24 kilometres in the rain on March 1 and arrived at an isolated DOC hut in the Nelson Lakes district. Her only birthday recipe was a hot chocolate with other trampers. If a humble hot chocolate was a little recipe, drinking it was a big deal. Barbora’s journey was a little different. She’d left Picton nearly three weeks earlier and was heading to Bluff to raise funds for Becky Dirks from Methven whose son, David, requires serious heart surgery. When she completed the journey on Monday night this week, she’d walked for 68 days and raised nearly $2500. “Monday, April 19, was a longer day, but I was determined to get there. It was the adrenalin that kept me going,” she says. Barbora had always wanted the challenge of trekking the mountains and seeing New Zealand’s magnificent scenery up close and, when she met the Dirks family, she found a purpose. “I wanted to achieve something where people would benefit,” she says. She’d been involved in sport throughout her lifetime. “I’m a swimmer, hiker, I ski in winter and do yoga. I was fit and didn’t do much preparation,” she explains. Her journey took her along the

inland trails. She started walking alone, but was often joined by other hikers for part of her South Island trip. She met many people and was sometimes overwhelmed by their hospitality. She recalls heading towards the backpackers in Riverton, Southland, when she was stopped by a local woman and invited to stay the night. Her generosity was wonderful, Barbora recalls. She has a vivid memory of the

New Zealand forest, the moss, the greenery, the mountains and the spectacular lakes. Barbora, from the Czech Republic, is due to start her winter job at Mount Hutt in about a week but, at the moment, she’s relaxing and monitoring the Givealittle page, which will remain open until the end of May. But she doesn’t plan another trek of this size in the future. From now on it’s shorter journeys, she says.

Vaccination time for frontline Ashburton staff By Malcolm Hopwood

About 450 frontline Ashburton-based district health board staff will shortly receive their vaccinations to protect them from Covid-19. The staff are part of the national group 2 rollout of 480,000 people, which began last month. Canterbury District Health Board’s executive lead for Covid-19, Ralph La Salle, said the DHB was working on a detailed plan for the wider vaccination rollout in Ashburton, which would be a collaboration between primary and secondary care. He said the DHB was working to confirm the details over the next week. “We are hoping to start by establishing a hospital-based clinic to vaccinate Ashburton-based frontline healthcare workers that fall into the group 2 category,” La Salle said. He said about 20 per cent of New Zealand’s 12,000 border, managed isolation and quarantine workers were based in Canterbury and were receiving their second dose vaccinations. “We are also vaccinating household contacts of our border workers, starting from a single clinic location and then expanding further,” La Salle said. Vaccinations for those in group 3, which comprised people at risk of getting

o suddenly we’re getting a national health service. Hands up if you believe there’s more questions than answers? Yep, thought so. Too many hands to count. On the face of it, the announcement that New Zealand would consolidate its fragmented and convoluted healthcare system into a national service makes sense. Quite clearly, the existing system of having 20 district health boards (DHBs) and 30 public health organisations, each with its own budget, wasn’t working, especially if you lived in the provinces and some distance from specialist care. A postcode lottery situation has meant the level of care and treatment many New Zealanders received depended on where they lived and what district health board covered them. That’s been unacceptable. Melissa Vining knows all about that. She’s the Southland woman, who lost her husband Blair to bowel cancer in 2019 and who campaigned relentlessly for better care for Kiwis suffering from cancer. Melissa and Blair, even in his final few weeks, petitioned to create a national cancer agency. The petition was signed by more than 140,000 and a Southland Charity Hospital resulted and would now open on May 13, which would have been Blair’s 41st birthday. So Vining would at least be delighted that the Government was working to address the healthcare inequality that has existed for decades. But like many of us, Vining would also have just as many questions and concerns. For instance? No Government commitments have been made for additional resources and funding to tackle waiting lists for cancer care and other treatment, yet more bureaucratic positions have been guaranteed in the shake-up. More funding is clearly vital because most of the DHBs were in critical situations now, so a lack of resources still needed to be addressed. Without that, and with uncertainty about how the national health service transition would be implemented, genuine fears remained that even more patients could slip through the cracks and even die. The establishment, too, of a separate Maori Health Authority would have the steam rising for many. Opponents would argue that every New Zealander should simply receive the right care when needed through the public health system, regardless of ethnicity. Race should never come into it. There must also be worries that regions and smaller communities like Ashburton could lose their health voices under centralised control. So many questions. So many worries. Perhaps that’s to be expected for a once-in-a-generation sector shakeup of this magnitude. But given the way the health system has bungled along, from one failure and controversy to another, scepticism is genuine and fair. It’s up to the Government to prove us wrong. No one would be watching closer than Melissa Vining.

’m not sure why, but I’m always on the lookout for tips and ideas on how I can make my life happier. Some will be reading this and thinking he doesn’t know how good he’s got it. Punching way out of his class with that gorgeous, slightly younger wife of his! That beautiful wee girl who shows him so much love each and every day and a job he loves. Why does he need to search for ways to make his life happier? Well, we are only here once so we may as well live this life thing to the fullest, we can, eh? With that in mind I came across a list this week that I printed off and I’m in the process of working through it. Number one on the list is end your shower with an invigorating blast: Switch to cold water for 30 seconds. You’ll get a big burst of energy as your body kicks your

circulation into gear. It also helps to release endorphins. So far, the most I’ve managed is 12 seconds and if I’m being completely honest it is more ‘coolish’ than ‘cold’. Drinking green tea regularly is tip two. It may lower your bad cholesterol levels. And people with a habit of drinking black tea have a lower risk of developing heart disease. I am easing into this with a daily peppermint tea, after a couple of black coffees. Clear clutter: Devote 20 minutes to tidying a messy area, and you’ll feel better. Studies have linked cluttered environments with stress.

I read another study that suggested even having your shoes sitting in pairs, nice and neatly in your wardrobe, gives you a feeling of contentment. So, I tried it and for whatever reason it works! Take a lunchtime stroll: A 15-minute midday walk boosts energy throughout the workday. It’s also good for the brain. Just this week I said to Manda we need to go on more walks, and we started by walking room to Maddy’s Preschool and picking her up. So much of our days are spent in front of screens; prevent dry eyes, headaches, and blurred vision by following the rule of 20: Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away. Twenty second break from our latest Netflix addiction, it’ll be tough, but I think we can manage that. And wouldn’t you know it; the beer fridge is about 20 feet away!

Breathe like a yogi: Studies say that 20 minutes of yoga breathing can lift your mood and even improve your memory. I’m not sure what Yogi Bear has to do with breathing, maybe they made a boo boo there? Donate your time: Volunteering gives people purpose, which raises self-esteem and lowers loneliness. This week I said yes to donating some of my time to talk to the MSA Garden Club. I must admit I do get some warm fuzzies after speaking to one of our local groups, especially if they all stayed awake. Plant something: A study found that adults who garden are happier, healthier, and more likely to eat vegetables. I do enjoy growing veges and it enables the other great love I have, eating. Create a “Yay!” list: Every night, write down anything that made you say “Yay!” during the day.

Think finding hidden money in your pocket, a surprise call from a friend, sunny skies, finishing a column for the paper …these help you recognise things going right in your life instead of focusing on the negative. So, there you go, now you have the list as well. See how many you can tick off, but remember to keep it in check, as this quote reminded me to do. The world is full of people looking for spectacular happiness while they snub contentment. Mixed messages with safe sex from a distance By Hamish Bidwell

o can someone please explain the 150,000 condoms? Rightly or wrongly, the Tokyo Olympic Games are nearly upon us. I mention ‘rightly’ merely for a token attempt at balance. The fact this Olympiad is about to be staged is wholly wrong on a host of levels, as far as I’m concerned. Let’s linger on just one, though. The fact is that Japan is suffering a fourth wave of coronavirus, with confirmed cases coming at more than 3000 a day. And Olympic Committees, such as our own, want to happily expose athletes to that? It’s grotesque and hardly good for the welfare of sports men and women, which we’re forever told is paramount. But never mind. Shouting,

cheering and singing at the Games have all been banned. That’ll keep those germs at bay. Frequenting bars and gyms is out for athletes and officials, who’ll number 11,000 by the time the event kicks off in July. Everyone will be wearing masks morning, noon and night and it’s “full steam ahead” for a safe and successful campaign, New Zealand Olympic and Commonwealth Games secretary general Kereyn Smith said recently. These are unprecedented times, so the excitement of the New Zealand team’s gear having been sent to Tokyo is tempered by the knowledge that everyone could still end up very sick. “It’s a really great time to reflect and to think about where we’ve come from and also to feel slightly daunted by the

challenges ahead,’’ said Smith. So what’s with all the condoms? Sure, 150,000 is rather modest, compared to the 450,000 organisers rustled up for the Rio Games in 2016, but who’s going to need all these prophylactics? Either athletes and coaches and officials are going to be socially-distanced at all times in Tokyo or they’re not. It can’t be when it’s convenient or when there’s a camera within cooee or when you haven’t competed in your event yet. You’re either fraternising with different folk or you’re not. You can be socially-distanced and still have sex, just as long as – what? – you’ve got your face mask on? What about your national team’s tracksuit? Would that help too? “The Games will remind all of

us of the importance of solidarity and co-operation,’’ Tokyo Organising Committee executive director Maki Koboyashi said recently. “Because of the medical workers, the researchers, the essential workers and the citizens who have been bearing these situations, we can make things possible. This is going to be the platform for hope.” So what’s with all the condoms, then? What “hope” does any athlete have of remaining coronavirus-free, if organisers are literally going to hand out contraceptives? And there we were thinking it was all about the medals and the honour of representing your nation. I sincerely hope no athlete, official, coach or accredited media member falls ill in Japan.

I hope the event can run without incident and that television viewers are treated to some fine performances. But it’s hard to have great confidence when the messages are this mixed. There’s absolutely no justification for staging these Olympics, given the health crisis that exists in Japan. Organisers will have hoped that delaying the event by a year would have mitigated the prevalence and virulence of these strains of Covid-19, but that hasn’t happened. The International Olympic Committee are determined to plough ahead, with the help of various protocols that they believe will keep everyone safe. Great. It’s just hard to see how 150,000 condoms are compatible with any of that.

While both its looks and interior shout the performance car message, it’s what it can do, not what it looks like it should do, that really counts. At the heart of the matter is one of the most powerful 2.0-litre engines you’ll come across in mass production. Complete with a twin-scroll turbocharger capable of 30psi boost pressure, two-stage fuel injection and high-performance cooling system its peak figures are 310kW at 6750rpm and 500Nm from 5000-5250rpm. But this engine, despite being quiet on start-up (there’s no selectable exhaust noise choice) delivers, right from low rpm, very strongly mid-range and then right through to its 7200rpm redline. The result – effortless progress at all times. It’s mated to an eight-speed twinclutch auto, and with all four wheels being driven via the fully variable 4Matic system, the drive as suggested above can be entirely exhilarating. This active all-wheel-drive system very efficiently distributes the power between the front and rear wheels as well as selectively between the rear wheels, for the rear differential has an electronic multidisc clutch for each wheel. The result -optimum traction, which in concert with the 245/35 ZR Pilot Sport tyres means the ability to carve through and exit corners with tenacious grip. There is, of course, a variety of other

driver-selectable modes, including the default Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Track and even a Drift Mode function, allowing you an incredibly wide choice of various engine, transmission and suspension settings to suit the driving conditions and/ or your style. Comfort means a supple – and yes, comfortable ride. Selecting the others expectedly and instantly sees the car become busier, much firmer and as playful as you may wish, yet the always precise steering and these very positive dynamics are not at the expense of ride quality. As required, the red-painted, ventilated and perforated discs front and rear provide awesome stopping action. While it’s based on the latest A-Class architecture, this A45 S has extensive modifications, including reinforcement plates beneath and bracing to cope with all those extra performance demands. But then, with its aggressively shaped air intakes, AMG-specific grille, flared wheel-arches, side skirts black alloys, red brake callipers, four exhausts and large rear wing as well as the drive cars optional Sun yellow/black colour combination, you’ll not be mistaking it for anything but what it is! Slipping inside this sense of occasion continues. You sit low in the suitably firm, heated and electrically adjustable sports seats with their two-tone leather furnishings

with yellow stitching highlights, from where you survey the alloy-and-black detailing, the wide, multi-configurable, entirely digital screen and very necessary head-up display. There’s heaps of vehicle functions and data on hand including warm-up indicators, a G-meter, race timer, telemetry, engine data, as well as a Burmeister surround-sound audio system, the Hey, Mercedes voice control system and more. Luggage space is 370 litres, or 1210L with the split/fold rear seats folded. Among the advanced safety system the cruise control brings radar sensors and a 3D stereo camera that monitor surroundings and maintain stop/go speeds of up to 210km/h. While the stated combined-cycle fuel consumption is 8.4L/100km, this is entirely dependent on how much fun you may be having, or have had.

FINALE This Mercedes-AMG A 45S sure fits the two-cars-in-one scenario so very well. For domestic duties, it’s suitably comfortable in the usual precise German manner, complete with plenty of visual and aural aids, but then is also well set up to quickly slot in so easily being an involving track-day weapon, one that I imagine the late Shayne Adams would have been most happy to have waved a chequered flag at

The multimedia system’s HD screen, with new graphics, more user-friendly and without surrounds, is increased in size from 8”4 to 10”1. There’s a new national champion in the Ashburton waters. Hannah King has been flying the Ashburton Swim Team flag at the New Zealand Age Group Swimming Championships in Wellington this week, and if they didn’t know about the 15-yearold before, they sure do now. She produced one of the swims of the championships on Tuesday night to win the 200-metre breaststroke final for her age

group, driving hard to the wall to grab the win by a slim margin. It was a huge turnaround from the talented swimmer who finished fourth in her heat – but then managed to produce something special in the final to better her personal best by seven seconds in becoming a national champion. “This is great, it makes all my training and hard work worth it,” a clearly shell-shocked King said in her post-race interview. Back in Ashburton, King’s family, friends, supporters and fellow members of the Ashburton Swim

Team cheered her home over the final 50 metres as she wore down the race leader, and few were prouder than coach Shane Jones. “It was a fantastic effort and one she should be very proud of.” Jones has remained in Ashburton during the championships, but has been in contact with King after each of her races during the week as well as speaking with David Prattley, who is the head coach of the AquaGym Swim Club whom King has travelled north with. “We’ve worked in with them so that Hannah wasn’t up there by

herself and it’s worked really well. “Dave has been great, and we’ve been able to keep in contact and offer advice and talk through her swims.” And perhaps it’s some of that communication that helped King achieve national champion status. After finishing fourth in her heat, Jones said discussions were held about the third 50 metres of the race, and where some improvements could be made. “Hannah was already aware that she’d allowed her hips to drop a bit and that had made a bit of a difference, but we talked

through it and the end result was a huge swim to get the gold. “But a lot of the work we do in training is focused on that last 15 metres of a swim, really pushing to the wall, and to see Hannah dig deep like that and really drive to the wall was great.” The championships officially come to a close tomorrow, but King was back in the pool last night swimming in the 100-metre breaststroke final, and has the 1500 metre freestyle still to come. And who knows, another national title might be sitting in the water.

Some of New Zealand’s best indoor target shooters will converge in Ashburton this weekend for two and a half days of competitive shooting. Target Shooting Mid Canterbury hosts its annual open championship over tonight and tomorrow and then one of their affiliate clubs, Phoenix Target Shooting will host their own championships throughout Sunday. The weekend events act as the first of their kind in the South Island for the shooting season

and also gives competitors their first opportunity to set qualifying results for the South Island rankings for the Indoor National Championships. Target Shooting Mid Canterbury spokesperson, Nina McKenzie said competitors were travelling from far and wide to compete over the weekend. “We have entrants from Nelson through to Invercargill attending,” she said. “2020 saw the cancellation of many events, including the pinnacle of indoor events, the National North South Match, so to be back competing is great for the sport.” Both competitions cater for

Target shooters from around the South Island will take aim indoors this weekend with two championships being held in Ashburton. all grades of shooters, from the Open and BCD Grade championship through to the masters, and the locals will make up a pretty strong force to withstand the challenge of out of town visitors. “While last year removed a number of competitions from our calendar, our clubs – both Coronation and Phoenix, continued hard at work and we’re proud to have a number of members contesting grades and titles over the weekend,” McKenzie said. It will also provide an oppor-

tunity for many of the club’s newer members to step into the world of open championships for the first time, while more experienced shooters will be targeting their pathway to selection in national teams for the year. The Target Shooting Mid Canterbury championships start at 6pm tonight at the Coronation Rifle Range on West Street and then again tomorrow at 12.30pm while the Phoenix Target Shooting Club championships begin at 1pm on Sunday.

A story in the Midweek edition of the Guardian suggested that the Celtic Senior B rugby side had taken the Bruce Beckley Challenge Shield off Mt Somers when they beat them last weekend. This was in fact incorrect. Celtic finished last season as the holders of the prestigious shield, and therefore defending it successful last Saturday. The Guardian apologises for the error.

Mayfield Squash The Midlands Squash season rolls into Mayfield this weekend for the annual Mayfield Open. A strong field of players will line up to compete in the event which begins tonight and runs through until tomorrow evening when finals will be played, and winners will be crowned.

Night rugby comes to Mid Canterbury tonight, when Southern and Methven lock horns at the Hinds Domain. The first local derby of the Combined Country Rugby competition for the season, the match promises to be an absolute belter, with two good sides continuing a long tradition of great games of rugby. Southern are the early form team of the competition. With two wins on the board from their two matches, they’re on a forward march and looking good to go deep into the competition. But it hasn’t all been plain-sailing. They’ve got a few injuries around the camp at the moment, particularly in their forward pack and it could mean that co-coach, Jon Dampney finds himself lacing up the boots again tonight. “We’ve got a few options on the

ty stuff up in the forwards that comes out on top. “I’ve been really happy with the way our forward pack has been going but we’ll need to step it up again if we’re to beat Methven.” Playing under the lights doesn’t change the game plan, Dampney said, but it does require a shift in mindset from your normal Saturday regime ahead of a match. “It’s one of those things, you have to get off work and get right into that mindset of rugby which isn’t like a Saturday. “The lights shouldn’t count for much, we train under them every week – yes, it’s different in a game situation, but you know to stand that little bit closer and be aware of a greasy ball.” Methven come into the match off the back of their first win of the season last Saturday against Lincoln and while a victory, it was far from perfect and coaches Simon Fleetwood and Willy Tahuri would have identified any shortcomings during trainings this week. Kick off tonight is at 7pm.

In brief Anzac for Apollo Mid Canterbury trotter, One Apollo will contest the Group One Anzac Cup on a huge night of harness racing from Alexandra Park in Auckland tonight. The Brent Whitetrained trotter takes on most of the best trotters in the land in one of a multitude of features from the night of racing. Drawn the outside of the mobile arm for the event, One Apollo will also have the services of a new driver, with Tim Williams taking the reins on the gelding.

Baabaas focus on the future

Jerry Garcia retired Dual-gaited standardbred Jerry Garcia has been retired by his connections. The Leo O’Reilly trained pacer-cum-trotter ran his last race at Rangiora on Sunday bringing to a close a wonderful career that spanned over 165 starts. Now 11, Jerry Garcia won nine races as a pacer, including the Kurow Cup, and then changed gaits to win five races as a trotter, netting close to $150,000 for his connections.

Lock turns local

There’s a tough mountain in front of the Ashburton Barbarians Rugby League Club side this Anzac Weekend. But there’s no desire to shy away from the challenge at hand. Instead, there’s a steely face of determination. A desire to learn and be better in one of the toughest rugby league competitions in the country – playing against well-established sides week in and week out while striving to find that collective nature that turns itself into success. After a heavy defeat at the hands of the Halswell Hornets last Saturday at Robilliard Park, the Barbarians head back up the road again this week to the Papanui Domain to take on the Linwood Keas. Halswell proved a little too much for the Baabaas, winning 52-12 – but while defeat was tough, there were again plenty of encouraging signs from the match that bode well for the future of the side. Every game in the competition is tough, but coach Matt Milne will be charged this week with asking his men to lift themselves up from two tough losses to open the campaign to take on the table-toppers after the first two rounds. Crusaders’ form explained Stats from the Crusaders’ last three games offers an insight into the reasons behind the team’s drop in form in Super Rugby Aotearoa. The Crusaders began the competition where they left off, dominating the rest of the teams and were looking well on their way towards a fifth straight title. But in their last three games against the Highlanders, Hurricanes and Chiefs – where they lost two and narrowly won one, only thanks to a golden point win – Scott Robertson’s side has shown vulnerabilities. According to New Zealand under-20 coach Tabai Matson, the Crusaders’ decline can be explained through the stats. “What we’ve definitely seen is this form drop from the Crusaders and the Blues ... and the Highlanders and Chiefs are coming aren’t they?” Matson said. Matson says it comes down to “metres differential”. “If my team makes 400 metres, and your team makes 200 metres, my team has an 82 per cent

chance of winning. So one of the things you’ll see is the Blues and the Crusaders around metres made and the differential were outstanding [at the start of the competition].” According to Matson, the Crusaders’ metres differential in rounds 1-4 was +898m, which was “nearly twice as many metres difference from any other team”. However, in the last three games, the Crusaders have seen a significant drop down to -64m in metres differential, a stunning stat that showcases the extent of the team’s fall. “They’ve had a significant drop in their kicking metres, they’ve had a significant drop in their ability to carry the ball up the field ... when teams make a little line break, they’re scoring points now. “Their defence has definitely dropped, and on the back of that, their metres differential has squeezed right up just like the table has.” On the other hand, the Highlanders have im-

proved from a -440m differential in rounds 1-4 to a +179m differential in rounds 5-8. “It’s on the back of some really smart kicking and consistency in winning all the kicking battles. They did it against the Crusaders. They played Mitch Hunt and his ability to get the ball in behind, get it on the ground, get it to bounce two or three times and the Crusaders [had] to battle to carry the ball back out of their half.” However, the most impressive team over the last few weeks have been the Chiefs who currently sit in second on the ladder and have the best chance to make the final, says Matson. The Chiefs haven’t seen as much of a swing in metres differential over the last few weeks as others (-175m in rounds 1-4 and -18m in rounds 5-8) but Matson believes it just shows how much Clayton McMillan’s team can improve, and why they are likely to be in the final.
