Both Mid Canterbury employers and new immigrant employees welcomed an announcement by Iain Lees-Galloway in Ashburton yesterday.
The Immigration Minister proposed a set of reforms for employer-assisted temporary work visas, in order to turn around a crippling labour shortage by simplifying the process of businesses accessing migrant labour.
He made the announcement at the Ashburton clock tower at 9am, in front of stakeholders including national media, Ashburton District councillors, Labour Party MP Jo Luxton and party personnel, representatives of local business-
es, and immigrant workers. Lees-Galloway said the council had found that with 500 vacancies, the district was desperate for workers. “The current labour shortage cost the Ashburton economy at least $16 million this
year. By 2030, the cost of this labour shortage could rise to over $100 million,” Lees-Galloway said.

Visa proposals welcomed From P1 New proposals would simplify the number of visa options, respond to sectoral and regional differences in the labour market, and align with education, skills and welfare systems. A regional skills shortage list was aimed to be in place by April, giving more certainty to employers wanting to hire skilled migrants. An exemption to labour market tests for jobs that are paid twice the median wage would streamline the process for smaller sectors and make it easier to hire highly-skilled migrants. Sector agreements would focus on sectors that had demonstrated they were facing significant supply issues for lower or mid-skilled labour. These were residential aged-care, dairy farming, tourism and hospitality, and road freight and transport. Proposals included introducing a new framework for assessing all employer-assisted temporary work visas, with checks for employers, jobs and migrants, and they would be employer-led, rather than migrant-led. Finally, government was reviewing some of the changes made by the previous government, including the stand-down periods and family entitlements for lower-skilled migrants. Consultation on the document was open to everyone and closes March 18, with final decisions made by mid-2019. While the risk of fire in the district might be low compared to this time last year, people still need to be aware of the dangers and keeping risks to a minimum. Rural fire officer Don Geddes has been left scratching his head at the conditions this year, but believes the weather we have been getting is the perfect opportunity for people to prepare their properties for when things do dry out. “Last year was odd in that the highest level of risk we got to was before Christmas and then it rained afterwards and now it just won’t stop raining,” he said. “We have had an awful lot of rain and not a lot of drying but, swings and roundabouts, it will happen.” Geddes said they had received several complaints from the public about overgrown sections in town, and he believes now is the best time for property owners to sort out anything that could become an issue when things dry out.
Fire fighters are hoping to avoid call-outs like this over summer once things start to dry out. “Potentially when it dries out we will have issues if people are reckless so it is just about people making smart decisions,” he said.
“There being fuel for fires is only an issue when people don’t exercise caution.” Other fire safety basics include
ensuring roadsides are mowed, farmers checking for birds’ nests in their vehicles and ensuring machinery is well maintained.

Court deals blow to residency dreams Reinan Karl Bayucot Arado had his dreams of a smooth path to New Zealand residency dashed in the Ashburton District Court on Monday. At an earlier appearance the police summary of facts showed the 34-year-old Lismore man claimed to be delivering a cellphone when he set out driving on Maronan Road about 9pm on August 21. His vehicle crossed the centre line and crashed into an oncoming car, causing significant damage to it. Arado was breath-tested after the crash and found to be driving with 795mcg – the legal limit is 250mcg. At Monday’s appearance, his lawyer Marilyn Gilchrist was applying for discharge without conviction, but this was opposed by Crown prosecutor Victoria Skelton. The court heard the driver of the other vehicle was pregnant
at the time of the crash. Gilchrist said her client had worked hard to get to New Zealand, and his family in the Philippines relied on money he sent home to support them. He had been hoping to ultimately apply for residency, and a judgement reflecting his good character increased the likelihood of this. It was his first offence, he had paid reparation, and not driven since the accident. Judge Joanna Maze said for-
tunately neither the victim nor her baby was injured, but the potential was there for serious harm. “She was travelling in her lane, she was entitled to be safe in those circumstances and Mr Arado imperilled her.” Her Honour declined the application, and convicted and discharged Arado on the careless use charge, and convicted and fined him $800 on the drink driving charge, disqualifying him from driving for six months.
Defendant not aware Matthew Ranson did not know there had been a stabbing at the party he was at, but later realised it may have been him who had committed the alleged crime. So said duty solicitor Paul Norcross when seeking bail for the defendant in the Ashburton District Court on Monday. Ranson had been at the party when some men turned up and were asked to leave, but returned with more in tow later. One started chasing him around the property. “He was terrified,” Norcross said. Ranson ran past a table and picked up a cheese knife, which he put down while a brief confrontation with the man was under way. Ranson was the one who rang the police, and only found out later there had been a stabbing. “He put two and two together and thought it was probably him because he was the one with the knife.” Ranson was remanded on bail without plea to appear January 21, with conditions including residing at his Ashburton address and not associating with the victim or any prosecution witnesses. David John Marsden was sentenced to 12 months intensive supervision on special conditions and will only be able to drive with
an alcohol interlock device following his fifth drink driving conviction. Judge Joanna Maze noted Marsden’s previous convictions in 2002, 2008, 2010 and 2014. She said she had to balance public safety with Marsden’s need for help with health difficulties associated with abusing alcohol as a coping mechanism. Along with the sentence there would be judicial monitoring so she would receive regular reports on his progress. “We will walk the path together,” she said. Marsden blew 600mcg when he was stopped on the Rakaia highway on August 3. Raymond Henare, 29, was convicted and remanded to February 11 for restorative justice and sentence on charges related to shoplifting and theft of fuel. Henare filled up his car and drove off without paying at three petrol stations in Christchurch and Rakaia in October and November, totalling more than $200 in fuel thefts. He also faced a shoplifting charge relating to theft of groceries in Christchurch. Nakeisha Rimene was convicted and remanded to February 11

The 25-year-old had pleaded guilty to three charges of theft under $500 after driving off without paying for fuel, for transactions up to $90 at Caltex in Ashburton and Z in Hornby. A sentence of supervision would help Glenn Matthew Hamilton continue the positive progress he was making, said Judge Maze. She handed down a term of six months supervision alongside a total term of 80 hours community work. The 32-year-old had pleaded guilty to dishonestly using a document, and breach of a former community work sentence, which he had received for unlawfully interfering with a motor vehicle and wilful damage. Judge Maze convicted and discharged him on the breach of sentence charge, cancelling his remaining community work hours and in lieu sentencing him to six months supervision and 40 hours community work. On the new dishonesty charge she convicted and sentenced him to six months supervision, and 40 hours community work to run cumulative. Melvin Aragon was convicted
and sentenced to nine months supervision after pleading guilty to drink driving. “It’s plain that you have a major problem with alcohol abuse,” said Judge Maze to the 32-year-old, who had a previous conviction for excess blood alcohol in 2016. The dairy farm worker of Pendarves was facing his latest conviction after attending a social function and blowing 1058mcg when police stopped him on Chalmers Avenue at 5pm on November 4. Police had been alerted by a concerned member of the public. As well as the supervision sentence, he will only be able to drive on an alcohol interlock licence. Tina Marie Gill was convicted and remanded to March 18 for restorative justice and sentence. She faced one burglary charge relating to taking fuel from a bowser, and two charges of shoplifting, relating to not paying for alcohol and tobacco at Liquorland stores in Ashburton and Timaru. The court heard Gill fled the Liquorland premises when her eftpos transactions failed. Troy Scott Mcevedy no longer drinks alcohol or associates with people who were a bad influence

The court had previously heard how Mcevedy went to a Rakaia
address about 9.30pm on November 24 last year, where he told the victim he was going to give him a “hiding”. When the victim tried to call 111, Mcevedy put him in a headlock and punched him in the head repeatedly. The victim broke free and barricaded himself in his bedroom. Mcevedy tried to force the door open and the victim escaped through his bedroom window and went to a neighbour, who called police. Injuries to the victim included bruising and swelling. “This was offending in relation to a person’s home, you pursued him determinedly when he was

Bill passes third reading The Prime Minister’s Child Poverty Reduction Bill has passed its third reading in Parliament with near unanimous support from political parties on both sides. The bill, which will set measures and targets for reducing child poverty, inform strategy to achieve that and require transparent reporting on poverty levels and introduce accountability for governments, was a cornerstone of Labour’s election campaign last year. The bill passed 119 votes in favour, with only Act opposed. Speaking in Parliament yesterday, Ardern said it was no longer just a Labour Party bill. “This is now an initiative that has been led by a coalition Government with the support of New Zealand First and the Green Party. And it also is an initiative that has had the support of the National Party. I want to acknowledge that,” Ardern said. Ardern, who introduced the bill in January, has been invested in it for years before that. She referenced her maiden speech, made
10 years and two days ago. National agreed in October to support the bill to become law, with some amendments after Ardern and National leader Simon Bridges worked behind the scenes to come to an agreement. National’s social development spokeswoman Louise Upston said the legislation gave the Opposition and the public the opportunity to measure the progress of the Government. Minister for Children Tracey Martin said the Children’s Commissioner, along with units inside the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Oranga Tamariki and other youth panels had made sure that the voices of children had been clearly articulated in the whole process. What tens of thousands of New Zealand children have said is the most important thing to them is time for you to spend with them,” Martin said. Children’s Commissioner Judge Andrew Becroft recently praised both National and Labour for supporting the bill. – NZME
Plane crash victims on test flight The two men who died in a plane crash at Raglan on Tuesday were believed to be visiting the seaside town during a test flight. It was understood the owner was currently in the process of selling his Vans-RV4 light aircraft and was taking a prospective new owner on a trial flight. The bright yellow plane is based in Auckland while it’s believed the owner got his father to carry out the test flight for him. The owner’s father, who died, lives in the Marlborough region. It is not known who was flying the plane when it crashed. According to CAA information, the victim’s son has owned the

plane since June last year and been flying for about two years. A police spokeswoman said it’s believed the plane had taken off from the Tasman area in the South Island and was headed to Auckland. Police said they were now investigating on behalf of the coroner. They did not expect to release the men’s names until late yesterday or today. Meanwhile, Civil Aviation Authority investigators had arrived at the scene of the crash. Neighbours who saw the plane plunge from the sky also ran over to help the two occupants only to discover they did not survive.

Crews also picked up vital evidence for both CAA and forensic staff who would try to build a picture of how fast the plane was going before it slammed into the soft terrain. Government targets labour shortage N
ew Zealand has long been a country where if something didn’t quite fit someone would find a way to make it. It has largely been the Kiwi way and for most parts of society it’s worked. But yesterday, here on our own doorstep, there was an admission that something wasn’t quite fitting everyone, albeit with a finger pointing in the direction of the opposition. Keen eyes driving down East Street yesterday morning would have been forgiven for thinking that the story last month on the 500 jobs currently available in Ashburton had gone viral again
with television cameras, media and a swagger of councillors and our mayor all assembled beneath the clock tower in Baring Square East. But the occasion wasn’t for any of those mentioned above. This time it was political. Immigration Minister, Ian Lees-Galloway, along with
Labour MP from Rangitata Jo Luxton, was here to make an announcement on potential immigration reforms which he said will simplify the system and make it easier for businesses, but particularly the regions, to get skilled workers on board. And if we’ve got 500 jobs currently up for grabs, what better place to do it than little old Ashburton. There’s no doubt that labour shortages are a big problem, particularly in the regions and Lees-Galloway took aim at the previous government and blamed them for trying to make a square peg fit into a round hole for all of New Zealand.
The adoption of a Regional Skills Shortage List, which was part of the announcement yesterday, should be a good result for us as it will help identify more specifically the shortages we are experiencing and in what sectors we are experiencing them – leading to a stronger pointer for temporary migrants of opportunities on our back doorstep. As it currently stands, close to 20 per cent of the more than 230,000 temporary work visas issued in the 2017 to 2018 period were employer-assisted. In order to gain one an employer needs to demonstrate through labour market testing
that there is no suitable New Zealand option available to fill the role. It is refreshing, it must be said, to see something that is for once focussed on the smaller parts of New Zealand. So much of what is decided at a national level is of huge benefit to the major centres, but it really is the regional parts of this country that keep things ticking over. So, to see something put together which will specifically benefit not only our region, but other regions like ours, is a breath of fresh air and something we can only hope we start to see more and more of as things progress.

Fallen angels and other catastrophes C
hristmas is always going to be a little tricky for us. My Dad died just before Christmas three years ago and has left a very big 6”3’ hole in our lives. That’s not the only tragedy that is linked to this day for us, but I come from a long line of Christmas junkies, and although our family over here is small, we have always fiercely celebrated Christmas with a kind of tenacious determination. A ‘We can do this, and it will be fun it if it kills us’ kind of attitude. Sunday would have been my parents wedding anniversary, and momentous occasions like that can become heavy, and I have found the best thing to do is to acknowledge that it is painful, but at the same time try and do something positive and fun. New memories that don’t push out the old ones but can sit beside them on the shelf to balance things out a bit. I planned a day where my mother would come, and we would do all things Christmas; Christmas carols on Spotify while we put the tree up (finally), Christmas cookie decorating, make a gingerbread house, and finish up by taking Mum and the kids to Fossil Point Café in Dad’s 1949 Cadillac. Then he is kind of with us in a way.

The children ate the lollies. Then there’s the Cadillac. We made it to the café fine. Win win! Then she had some kind of weird tantrum and just died on the side of the road. Sigh. At this point, we have a choice. We can throw our toys fully out of the cot, lose all our sense of humour and just give up. Or we can re-frame and try and see things from a better angle. So here goes: Everyone falls down occasionally, even Angels, so let’s not judge her too harshly. She got there in the end. No ornaments, children or Grandmothers were harmed during the tree collapse. Gingerbread houses still taste good even in pieces. The Cadillacs tantrum was only temporary (and at 70 she is entitled to the odd hissy fit), and I have a wonderful husband who came to the rescue, and the best mechanic and friend on speed dial to talk me through it. (Thanks Brian!).

Seems like a good plan, right? Here’s the thing about life though. It likes to take your plans and raise you a bucket load of unexpected speed bumps. Because … that’s what life does. So, in a nutshell, the stand on the artificial tree (which is stylish and black, but perhaps that was the problem?) broke (enter duct tape), the Christmas Angel had too much eggnog at the office party and keep falling off the top of the tree (like a million times.) Then the whole tree just fell over. Enter string. (Tie that b@#$%!@ to the window, you will not beat me.) Then, oh, the ginger bread house. Oh, my goodness. We could not get the walls to stay on. The roof kept slipping off. No matter how much icing. Maybe the 27ºC day didn’t help? Everyone knows I am not a do-

Referendums demanded France’s “yellow vest” protesters are demanding the right to hold referendums on new legislation that would overrule parliamentary votes. Referendums, which protesters say would be a more direct form of democracy, have become a key demand of the movement. They are calling for a “citizens’ initiative referendum” to be triggered if 700,000 people sign an online petition supervised by an independent body. In addition to introducing or scrapping legislation, people’s votes could be held on international agreements or to oust elected officials, including President Emmanuel Macron, who is the target of much of the protesters’ anger. The “yellow vests” have no leader, but protesters manning roadblocks across the country voiced the demand for a new system of government by referendum in interviews with French media yesterday. Grégoire Blanchet, 42, a protester on the A27 motorway in north-eastern France, said: “We want to govern ourselves.” The numbers of protesters have dwindled, but hardliners are defying government calls to end the unrest. Many dismissed as token gestures concessions by Macron, including an increase in the minimum wage. “We’ll continue this movement until our demands are met in full, not just some little measures that won’t make much difference,” said Blanchet. Marine Le Pen, the leader of the far-Right National Rally, backed the protesters’ call for referendums, as did Jean-Luc Mélenchon, head of the far-Left France Unbowed party. Both pointed out that the demand had been included in their party manifestos before the emergence of the “yellow vests”. Macron, whose approval ratings have plunged again since the protests began, has announced town hall meetings across the country to increase public involvement in policymaking. But the government is struggling to explain how it will pay for Macron’s concessions to protesters. Edouard Philippe, the prime minister, said France’s budget deficit was now likely to exceed the EU limit of three per cent of GDP,. Macron will face more pressure today in a “black day” of protest by French police, with officers refusing to leave their stations except in response to emergency calls. - PA The violence is escalating in French protests.
Nigella blasts airbrushing British TV star chef Nigella Lawson has hit out at US TV stations to stop photoshopping her “sticking out stomach”. The TV cook took to Twitter at the weekend, saying the editing was harmful, in that it took a negative view of fat. “I’ve had to tell American TV stations not to airbrush my sticking out stomach. The hatred of fat, and assumption that we’d all be grateful to be airbrushed thinner is pernicious,” Lawson tweeted. It came in response to actor Jameela Jamil’s comments in which she criticised columnist Nadine O’Regan saying Photoshop “used as a tool of erasure of ethnicities, our skin colour, our features”.

Thrill-killers get to see Bambi, again and again

Authorities have no idea how many deer the Berry family and their associates illegally killed in the fields and forests of southern Missouri over the last decade, but the details of their poaching operation would make any animal lover’s stomach turn. Over nearly nine years, David Berry and his two sons, David Berry Jr. and Kyle Berry, killed the deer, mostly at night, then cut off their heads and antlers – leaving the bodies to rot where they fell. There was some financial motivation in the carnage, but authorities said collecting the deer heads was mostly about ego. “Taking just the heads is their version of obtaining a trophy and leaving the carcass behind is merely an afterthought,” said Randy Doman, the division chief of the Missouri Department of Conservation, told the Springfield News-Leader. “While there are some cases where poachers go after the antlers for profit, with this bunch it was more about the thrill of the kill itself.”
And so when the Berrys and more than a dozen other poachers were ultimately sentenced, Lawrence county Judge Robert George apparently hoped a little Disney magic would show one of them the error of his ways. David Berry Jr. “is to view the Walt Disney movie ‘Bambi,’ with the first viewing being on or before December 23, 2018, and at least one such viewing each month thereafter, during Defendant’s incarceration in the Lawrence County Jail.” Berry Jr. will be in jail for a year. In a scene that has traumatised generations of children, Bambi’s mother directs him to a patch of new spring grass before a sound startles her. “Bambi, quick. The thicket,” she urges as the two try to sprint to safety amid the sounds of gunshots. “Faster! Faster, Bambi! Don’t look back! Keep running! Keep running!” As David Berry Jr. will undoubtedly learn, those are the last words Bambi’s anthropomorphic mother utters. - PA
Miley Cyrus somehow managed to avoid a wardrobe malfunction during a stunning performance on Saturday Night Live. Cyrus, 26, wore a silver jacket with no bra during her performance of Nothing Breaks Like A Heart with Mark Ronson on the US comedy show and viewers were flabbergasted. Cyrus and Ronson also performed a touching rendition of Happy Xmas (War is Over) with John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s son, Sean Ono Lennon. Shorters’ crash apology TVNZ has apologised after Monday night’s Shortland Street cliffhanger featuring a deadly plane crash aired – within hours of a real life double-fatal aviation tragedy. The episode was the last for the year and concluded with one character dying following the crash. Earlier in the day, two bodies were retrieved from a mangled wreck after a light aircraft crashed into mudflats at Raglan. A spokesperson from TVNZ apologised to any viewers who might have found Momnday night’s episode disturbing following the Raglan crash.

By Chris KeaLL There’s been a steady stream of warning letters and fines for retailers who sell extended warranties. Or, at least, those who sell them without meeting their legal obligation to inform a customer about the Consumer Guarantees Act (CGA), which already has them covered for many situations. The fines seem big. On Friday, for example, came the news that Noel Leeming (part of The Warehouse Group) had been fined $200,000 for misleading consumers about their rights under the CGA. And on October 1, computer retailer PB Tech got hit with a $77,000 fine for similar offences. But in the context of the revenue involved, they could also be called modest. In PB Tech’s case, for example, the Commerce Commission alleged that between May 11 and November 30, 2017, the chain sold 4150 of its PB Care extended warranties and AppleCare Warranties without giving customers the information they needed to make an informed choice. PB Care warranties were sold for between 10-15 per cent of the value of the goods, depending on the length of the warranty. AppleCare warranty prices also varied depending on the product. The commission gave the example that a two-year warranty for a $460 Apple iPad was $129.56 – implying revenue from extended warranties would have been in the hundreds of thousands during the period of offending. In the case of larger retail chains, millions will be coming in the door from extended warranties.
Consumer NZ says there needs to be a deterrent effect in these verdicts, but it’s not seeing it. The Fair Trading Act allows for fines of up to $30,000 per offence for the type of offending involved (and the largest fine the act allows for is $600,000). Noel Leeming faced eight charges and PB Tech 14, but each got discounts for pleading guilty and co-operating. But even if they had been hit with the maximum amount (which would have been $240,000 in Noel Leeming’s case), it would not have been a big sum in the grand scheme of mass market retail. The commission can also issue warnings, but implied in the Noel Leeming case that these can be ineffectual. It said it had warned or issued compliance advice to Noel Leeming about potentially misleading consumers as to their CGA rights three times since 2007. Consumer head of research Jessica Wilson says her organisation wants fines in the Fair Trading Act increased. “At present, the maximum is $600,000. In comparison, Australia has increased penalties under its fair trading legislation to $A10 million,” she says. “The courts there can also look at the revenue the company earned from its offending and charge a higher fine if warranted.” The Aussie equivalent to the commission, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, has used its wider powers too. It took a federal case against Apple which, on June 19, was ordered to pay $A9m in damages in an extended warranty case.
That’s the sort of sum that makes everybody sit up and take notice. The Commerce Commission should also be given broader powers to issue fines, without the need to go to court, when there are clear breaches of the Fair Trading Act, Wilson says. The Herald put Consumer’s higher-fines concept to Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Kris Faafoi. Faafoi says he asked Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) to review consumer laws, including the Fair Trading Act, in a process that started in June this year. “I am expecting their advice early in 2019, including in relation to enforcement and remedies under the Fair Trading Act,” he says. “I will then consider whether these are still fit for purpose, or whether we need to make more change to ensure they deliver the right outcomes and provide the right protection for consumers.” Your rights under the CGA Consumer has labelled extended warranties as worthless in most cases, given customers are being sold rights they already enjoy under the Consumer Guarantees Act. There can be reasons to buy an extended warranty. The CGA doesn’t apply to business purchases, and some extended warranties will give you a replacement while a good is under repair, for example. But a retailer can only sell one if they provide a customer with a summary of their rights under the CGA first, plus a summary of how the retailer’s extended warranty compares to the CGA. – NZME

Returns for the NZ Super Fund – the government savings vehicle managing $40 billion of tax payer money – have followed global markets back down to earth with a thud. According to the fund’s December Investment Environment Report it has returned 3.5 per cent over the past 12 months – a big shift from the double-digit returns it has managed during the bull market of the past several years. The fund has also shifted to a more defensive stance – with more liquid assets than usual – to cope with the slump ... or what it describes as the “late stage of the economic cycle”. More market falls in the past week have Wall Street indexes on track to end the year in the red. Chinese markets are down by more than 20 per cent and the local NZX-50 is up just 3 per cent for the year. The fund has averaged an almost 11 per cent return per year over the past three years. Last year it returned 12.4 per cent and in 2016 it returned more than 20 per cent. The fund’s returns were nega-

It looks out to at least 2035 (the earliest a government will begin to withdraw money to help pay for New Zealand Superannuation) and beyond. “We’re a long-term investor and our endowments allow us to ride through a rough period like we’ve just experienced,” Frith said. At the moment the fund had a higher proportion of liquid assets to illiquid assets than it would have on average over the cycle, he said. In other words it has taken a more defensive stance, shifting towards more liquid assets such as cash and 90 Day Bank Bills. “If we are in the late stages of the economic cycle and prices are high and downside risks prevail then this is a good place to be.” It meant the fund could stand major liquidity demands if markets fall further. “We’re not saying this will happen,” Frith said, “but it means we’ll be positioned for it all the same.” It also meant the fund was well positioned to buy more assets as they got cheaper, he said. – NZME

When it comes to a festive meal Kiwi style, many people now step away from tradition and, in many families, the more casual, the better. And that’s when salads that are a little different come into their own. Team them with hot meats, barbecue meats or cold meat. They’re an all-round winner.
Cauliflower and couscous salad 1 cauliflower, trimmed, cut into florets 1/2 C olive oil 2T pinenuts 1 red onion, thinly sliced 2 garlic cloves, crushed 2t Moroccan seasoning 1C pearl couscous 1/4 C dried cranberries 1 1/2 C boiling water 1/3 C lemon juice 1 bunch coriander, stems removed

Courgette and red pepper salad
150g small green beans, trimmed 150g small butter beans, trimmed 800g new potatoes, scrubbed 100g diced ham 2 avocados, halved, stones removed, peeled, sliced 1/3 C mayonnaise 1 large lime, rind finely grated, juiced 1/3 C dill sprigs
2T extra virgin olive oil, 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 red pepper, deseeded, cut into 15 x 2cm lengths 3 medium courgettes, cut lengthwise 2 lemons, zested, and 1T juice 2T parsley, chopped ■ Heat 1T oil in a saucepan. Add the garlic and peppers. ■ Sauté on a low heat for 10 minutes. Remove from pan, set aside. ■ Using the same pan, add the remaining oil. Add the courgettes and lemon zest. ■ Cook again on a low heat for 8 to 10 minutes. ■ Place capsicums and garlic back in the pan. Place in iced water for 5 minutes. Drain and combine with lentils and red onion. Whisk 100ml olive oil with 2T lemon juice and season with salt and pepper. Toss gently through salad. Scatter over 1/4 C coarsely chopped mint.

Latham’s timing impeccable T
om Latham, take a bow. You have almost singlehandedly got the summer of international cricket on New Zealand soil off to a stunning start. I say almost, because while Latham’s incredible knock of 264 not out against Sri Lanka in the first test was by far the most outstanding feature of the match, it actually formed part of what was a pretty good all-round performance. It also came just days after the Blackcaps had pulled off an historic test series win over Pakistan in the UAE, so when you put all of those things together, the Black Caps probably couldn’t be in a much better situation right now. When you looked at the two teams heading into this home series, the Black Caps were fourth in the ICC test cricket rankings and Sri Lanka sixth. While we must have gone in as warm favourites on that ranking and the fact we were playing on home soil alone, Sri Lanka were still likely to pose
some tricky questions. Sri Lanka headed out to bat at the start of the game at Wellington’s Basin Reserve and were met by a Tim Southee in outstanding form. He ripped through the Sri Lankan batting line-up, making their top order look less than ordinary and finishing with six first innings wickets to his name. While they recovered from their atrocious start and to managed to get through to a respectable total of 282, the Blackcaps proved to have all the answers. Latham and Jeet Raval opened the batting and got us off to a pretty good start. Both were travelling along quite nicely when the commentators made mention of both potentially going on make triple figures. With both players a wee way off the 50 mark at that point, it was a bit far out to be making calls like that. Predictably, a few balls later, Raval went out. But Latham was far from done.

After a slow and steady start, he settled into a nice pace and looked in full control. At stumps on day two, he was blocking balls straight out of the middle of the bat and the signs were there that Monday could be a day not to be missed. Latham produced the highest score by a test opener carrying his bat, going unbeaten through an entire innings, and well surpassed his previous highest test score of 177, also achieved at the Basin. When you looked at Latham’s efforts in detail, you realised just how special a performance it actually was. He batted for more than 11 hours and notched up the
highest individual test score by any international player in 2018, which was also the sixth-highest innings by a New Zealander. And he wasn’t done either. He was on 264 and still looking as comfortable as ever when he lost his final partner with his side’s score at 578. Had he not run out of partners, it was likely that captain Kane Williamson would have pulled the pin and declared at some point, but how awesome would it have been if he’d been able to keep going? Brendon McCullum’s record 302, scored on the same ground in 2014, was under serious threat. The summer of cricket may have just been getting under way on New Zealand soil and I don’t want to jinx it, like those commentators did to Raval in the first innings, but everything was pointing towards this summer being a pretty good one. And with a world cup just around the corner – starting in England in May – the timing couldn’t be better.
Liverpool draw Bayern Juergen Klopp’s Liverpool will take on Bayern Munich in a duel of five-time winners and one of three intriguing English-German ties in the last 16 draw of the European Champions League. The unbeaten English Premier League leaders coached by German Klopp have had the upper hand in both previous continental meetings, the 2001 European Super Cup and the 1981 Champions Cup semi-finals. Manchester City forward Leroy Sane faces up to his former club in the form of Schalke and Tottenham play unbeaten Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund for the third time in four years after the draw made yesterday in Nyon, Switzerland. - PA
Tranmere still in Cup Tranmere set up an FA Cup third-round clash with Premier League giants Tottenham as Connor Jennings’ superb first-half double handed them a 2-0 victory in a replay against non-league Southport. Two stunning volleys from Jennings ensured the League Two club will host Mauricio Pochettino’s men at Prenton Park next month, although they did not have it all their own way in the second half. Keeper Dion Charles twice had to pull off fingertip saves from Southport’s Scott Davies rockets. - PA

Carter adds to impressive list Dan Carter may be nearing the end of his professional rugby career, but the former All Black isn’t slowing down on collecting titles and personal accolades. The All Black legend was named MVP of the Japanese Championship this week after leading his side, the Kobe Kobelco Steelers, to the title in his debut season with five conversions and one penalty. Off the back of a successful three seasons with Paris club Racing 92, the 36-year-old was also named top kicker with a decent 86.2 per cent success rate across the Japanese Championship season. Such success isn’t new to Carter, who still stands as the all-time International and Super Rugby points scorer and is considered by many as the greatest first-five in the history of the game. It all started in 2001 when Carter was part of the Canterbury side which won the former domestic rugby competition, the National Provincial Championship. Kicking off his international career at the age of 19 with the All Blacks in 2003, the playmaker won his first of nine Tri Nations titles with the national side. Within the following two years, Carter was named Super 14 Player of the Year, back-to-back Kelvin Tremain Memorial New Zealand Player of the Year, IRB Player of the Year and secured a Super Rugby Championship, series victory over the British and Irish Lions, and a successful Grand Slam Tour with the All Blacks.
And it didn’t end there. After being part of the All Blacks’ Rugby World Cup winning side in 2011 and 2015, and claiming the annual Tri Nations series with the team for three consecutive years, Carter was awarded a New Zealand Order of Merit for services to rugby shortly after announcing his move to France to play for Racing 92. Although having such an impressive list of awards to his name, Carter said after being awarded MVP that winning honours wasn’t what drove his desire to play. “It’s a really proud moment for someone that has had such a long career and is getting to the end of that career,” Carter told Kyodo News. “But that’s not why I play the game. “I play to try and benefit my team and help them win titles. It’s not about individual awards like this. “But at the same time it’s nice to know the hard work and sacrifice that I have put in this year has been recognised.” Carter’s contract will see him back for the 2019-2020 Japanese rugby season to defend the championship title. Two major titles have alluded Carter throughout his career, the European Rugby Champions Cup which he made the final of in 2016 with Racing but left the field injured in a 21-9 defeat to Saracens. Sri Lanka in record form By Niall aNdersoN For two straight days the Black Caps have re-written the record books – but yesterday, they were on the wrong side of history. For the first time in the history of cricket tests played in New Zealand, a full day went by without a wicket falling, as the Sri Lankan pair of Kusal Mendis and Angelo Mathews put on a batting masterclass at the Basin Reserve. It came at a superb time for the visitors – the Black Caps were marching towards victory in the first test, but now, an incredible fightback and a bleak weather forecast looks to have rained on their parade. After all of the twists, turns and incredible comebacks of the Pakistan series, it looked like the Black Caps’ return home would produce far more formulaic tests, but Sri Lanka had other ideas. A 246-run partnership between Mendis [116*] and Mathews [117*] lasted the entire day – it was also the first wicketless day in any test since 2008 – allowing Sri Lanka to get to stumps at 259-3, and surely denying New Zealand an expected victory. Sure, Sri Lanka are still 37 runs behind with a day to go, but weather looks set to have the final say, with the forecast predicting steady rain for the whole day. Besides, even if it cleared – what evidence would there be to suggest the Black Caps could snap their partnership? Still, rain would be a limp conclusion to a strangely compelling test. A day after Tom Latham sent records tumbling, Mendis and Mathews compiled the biggest partnership of all time for Sri Lanka against New Zealand, barely offering a chance in their marathon stay at the crease. The pair displayed the type of discipline Latham had displayed in his 264, and after losing three wickets in 12 overs the night before, it was like a new wicket had been inserted overnight, such was the ease they batted with.

Mendis was the early aggressor, pulling with aplomb and negating – and angering – Neil Wagner, whose usual short-ball danger soon turned into monotonous surety as he went for 100 runs in 21 overs. So long the Black Caps’ failsafe when their first option wasn’t working, Wagner couldn’t muster any chances, and his combination with a tidy Ajaz Patel couldn’t repeat their heroics from the United Arab Emirates. As Mendis slowed down, showing good discipline, Mathews stepped up. In his second resurrection of the test – having scored 83 after coming in at 9-3 in the first innings – Mathews first battened down the hatches, then also joined in on the shortball fun – scoring the bulk of his runs via pull or hook shots. New Zealand’s bowlers couldn’t even muster appeals, as session by session went by without any hope of breaking the partnership. From starting the day at 20-3, Sri Lanka reached 122-3 at lunch, then 197-3 at tea – constant, steady, easy accumulation. By then, Mendis had brought up his sixth test hundred from 215 balls – aptly pulling away a short ball to fine leg – and Mathews similarly brought up three figures with a flick through mid-wicket. After Sri Lanka had gone 11 test innings without a century, suddenly two had come along at once, and adding to New Zealand’s frustration was the fact just one breakthrough could have sparked something – Sri Lanka have a long tail – but they never even got close. Mathews celebrated his hundred with push-ups – a pointed celebration to critics of his fitness – and rightly so, as it took a powerful and indefatigable effort to deny New Zealand. Rain would seem a harsh way to decide the test – and both teams would love to settle the battle on the field. But, the Black Caps were in a prime position to end it yesterday, and Sri Lanka weathered the storm. - NZME
Smashing final over Some late Heather Graham heroics helped Perth Scorchers to a famous WBBL Super Over victory against Hobart Hurricanes in a run-laden contest at Bellerive Oval yesterday. Needing 17 runs off the last of their allotted 20 overs, Graham crashed 16 from the bowling of Heather Knight, including two off the final ball, to haul her side level. The visitors then took home the points by scoring 16 off the additional over, while the Hurricanes could only manage 2-8. Nicole Bolton thumped 15 off five balls in the added over, including a massive six. The Scorchers had seemed dead and buried heading into the final stages of the match, with 52 required off the last five overs, but the 22-year-old Graham picked the perfect time to post a seasonbest 44 not out off 30 deliveries. Young star playing ASB By Michael Burgess One of the most promising players in women’s tennis will be coming to Auckland in 2019. American teenager Amanda Anisimova, who is the youngest player in the top 100 of the WTA Tour, has been given a wildcard into the ASB Classic. Anisimova hit the headlines in May, when as a 16-year-old she upset two-time Wimbledon Champion Petra Kvitova to reach the round of sixteen at Indian Wells, which is recognised as the biggest tournament outside the grand slams. The Florida-based Anisimova backed that up with a run to the round of 16 in Cincinnati, before a stunning week in Hiroshima, Japan, where she came through qualifying to reach the final, winning seven matches in total and beating two seeds on the way. Before she turned professional, Anismova won the Junior US Open and reached number two on the ITF rankings. “We have had a pretty good track record in recent years identifying the next wave of stars of the WTA,” said ASB Classic tournament director Karl Budge. “Jelena Ostapenko, Sloane Stephens and recently Naomi Osaka have all come to Auckland early in their careers before going on to Grand Slam success. Given Amanda is still only 17 years old, she is well ahead of where those three girls were at the same time of their careers.” Anisimova ended the year ranked 96. In brief Grosjean French captain The French tennis federation says Sebastien Grosjean has been appointed as the country’s Davis Cup captain. Grosjean takes over from Yannick Noah after Amelie Mauresmo pulled out to focus on her new coaching job with French player Lucas Pouille. The French federation says Grosjean will also be in charge of the men’s team at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The Warriors have copped a huge serve from an NRL veteran for their handling of Shaun Johnson’s departure. Top NRL pundit Jamie Soward, the former State of Origin playmaker, has blasted the club as backstabbers and for “kicking” Johnson on his departure to the Sharks. Penteverest eyes Derby Penteverest could be set on a path towards the Gr.1 Vodafone New Zealand Derby (2400m) in March after impressing his connections with his victory in the Dunstan Feeds 1500 Championship Qualifier (1600m) at Ellerslie on Sunday. performance at Te Aroha when fresh-up for the stable. “It was a nice effort, he’s a progressive horse and has kept improving as he’s gone along. “We put a hood on him, which really improved him,” said Ken Kelso, who trains in partnership with his wife Bev and Mark Donoghue. Kelso has had the Chestnut gelding in his stable from the
start of this season and believes he is improving with time. “Graeme Sanders had him early on as a two-year-old and ran him first-up in the two-year-old slipper at Matamata. “He was still a colt then, I got him as an early three-year-old and he was gelded by then and he was always going to take time and he was probably a bit shinsore early on.
“He didn’t show us a lot, but he’s kept improving as he’s gone along.” Penteverest’s next assignment will be at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day, where he will line-up in the Gr.2 Jamieson Park Auckland Guineas (1600m) before a possible tilt at loftier targets. “We will give him another run at a mile. “At this stage we’ll look to run him on January 1 in the Guineas race.” - NZME

By Michael Guerin The connections of last season’s champion juvenile pacing filly Princess Tiffany are leaving no stone unturned to try and get to the bottom of her underwhelming start to the season. Unbeaten last season when she won the Jewels and Breeders Crown, Princess Tiffany has finished third and fourth at Alexandra Park the last two Fridays, costing punters a fortune and confusing her trainers. So she has been sent to Matamata’s Veterinary Services clinic for scintigraphy, a process in which dye is injected into a horse before scanning to pinpoint areas of possible soreness. While it used to be relatively rarely used on racehorses it has become more commonplace and the All Stars, who train Princess Tiffany, will sometimes send their horses for the scanning process at the end of long campaigns. But Princess Tiffany is just beginning her campaign and has a $150,000 Sires’ Stakes Mark Championship, for which she could still be favourite, at Alexandra Park on December 31. So her scintigraphy is to try and work out why she is racing below her best. “Mark (Purdon, trainer) thinks something might be annoying her but we can’t work out what, which is where the scintigraphy is so good,” says stable travelling foreman Matt Bowden. “We are not thinking it is anything serious but at least this way we will know and we are still confident of getting her
to the Sires’ Stakes Final.” Princess Tiffany’s expensive failure on Friday and the horrible mid-race smash in her event somewhat detracted from the emergence of unheralded filly Belle Of Montana. She is now a group two winner after just four starts for trainer Barry Purdon and paced the 2200m mobile in a very slick 3:28.3, quicker than both her stablemates Dream About Me (Queen Of Hearts) and Ultimate Sniper (Alabar Classic) as they won the other major 2200m mobiles on the night. While the fields for the December 31 meeting won’t be out until December 27, there has already been a big shortener in the markets for the group ones with Marcoola now into $1.75 to win the National Trot. He moved into a $1.90 after destroying his opposition in the Lyell Creek last Friday and is even shorter now as second favourite Speeding Spur has been ruled out of the race. “He has had a really busy Purdon time obviously with the Inter Dominion so we will freshen him up now and then all going well head back to Australia for the Great Southern Star,” says co-trainer Josh Dickie. There must also be doubts after Luby Lou, who sits on the fourth line of betting, making it to the National Trot as she has yet to race this season and her only chance of a lead-up race would be $50,000 Flying Mile to be run at Cambridge on Christmas Eve. - HRNZ

Enghien back on track One of the forgotten stars of the open class trotting ranks is fast closing in on a return to the track. And, if all goes well in the coming fortnight, the plan is to have Enghien back at the races very early in the New Year. The dual Derby winner hasn’t been seen since finishing fifth in the 4YO Ruby at the Harness Jewels earlier in the season, but is primed for a return according to co-trainer, Greg Hope who trains with his wife, Nina. “He’s coming up really nicely,” he said. “We will look at a public run for him this week somewhere and then

the plan is to head to Central Otago for the free for all at Omakau.” The Hope stable have given the son of Love You a long and gradual build up towards a return to the track and he’s not prepared to go in all guns a-blazing and automatically start throwing the rising star into the deep end. That means that after Omakau the focus will shift to the Four and Five-Year-Old Trotting Championship at Addington and then what happens next will be up to how well the now five-year-old handles it all. “We’re not going to put too much pressure on him, he’ll show
us how he’s going. “That race at Addington is the first main target though.” Meanwhile, in other good news for fans of the Hope stable, Monbet returned to fast work this week and was looking big and strong. “He’s just started to ramp things up again, but we won’t see him until probably February all going well.” After dominating the trotting ranks for a couple of seasons with Monbet, Enghien and Quite A Moment, it’s been lean for the past 12 months. But all of a sudden there’s a bit of light on the horizon for the
Woodend Beach stable. A G’s White Socks will join Enghien and a few other members of the stable in Omakau with about a dozen horses heading to Westport and then Reefton. “We’re casting the net far and wide this year; there will be horses at Ashburton, Westport, Motukarara and then down in Central as well so it’s going to take a little bit of sorting out.” The Hope stable is running at about a winner in every five starts with 22 wins on the board but with a strong summer racing team those numbers are set to increase.

Rudy Gay had 21 points and LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMar DeRozan each added 20 as the Spurs trounced Philadelphia 123-96. Simmons and J.J. Redick each had 16 points to lead the 76ers while Joel Embiid was limited to 13 points on six of 17 shooting. Mills had eight points in 20 minutes on court as the Spurs closed a six-game home stand at 5-1 to be 16-15 on the season. Philadelphia are 20-12 to hold on to fourth place in the easter conference. Paul George scored 24 points to lead the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 121-96 win over the visiting Chicago Bulls. Thunder star Russell Westbrook had 13 points, 16 rebounds and 11 assists for his 111th career triple-double. Giannis Antetokounmpo powered his way to 32 point and 12 rebounds as the Milwaukee Bucks overcame a triple-double from Blake Griffin to win 107-104 at the Detroit Pistons. While Griffin finished the game with 19 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists his two missed three-point attempts in the final 14 seconds proved decisive. His 10 turnovers didn’t help either. The Pistons rallied from a 15-point, third-quarter deficit and took an 89-86 lead in the fourth before the Bucks hit back to improve their season record to 20-9 and consolidate second place in the eastern conference. James Harden scored 47 points and carried the load down the stretch once again Houston Rockets extended their winning streak to four games with a 102-97 victory over the Utah Jazz. Karl-Anthony Towns scored 14 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, and eight other Minnesota players produced double-figure point totals as the Timberwolves defeated the Sacramento Kings 132-105.
