THE INDEPENDENT VOICE OF MID CANTERBURY

Driver ‘unfairly targeted’ One man plus two police officers equals fines exceeding $9000. That’s Daniel Brokenshire’s story. The 27-year-old says he’s being unfairly targeted by two police officers, and as a result has racked up thousands in fines. But the police’s side of the story is that they are well aware of Mr Brokenshire’s recidivist offending, and all they are doing is trying to keep the roads safe. Mr Brokenshire holds a learner driver’s licence, but he’s been caught behind the wheel unaccompanied on numerous occasions. He appreciates the officers have a job to do, but says there is no one to accompany him and he has to get around, especially as he is on the hunt for work. His problem is having the book thrown at him for other offences. Recently he was pulled up, and in addition to yet another fine for driving unaccompanied on a learner licence, he was ticketed for having no warrant of fitness, no registration and having noisy equipment in a vehicle. “I had got the warrant of fitness and registered the vehicle

the day before,” he said. “And I wasn’t aware it was illegal to have a set of subs (speakers) in a car.” Mr Brokenshire was again pulled up by police on Friday and received further tickets for being an unaccompanied learner, because they knew who he was. He told them he had booked to sit his restricted licence on Wednesday, but said they didn’t care. Ashburton police senior sergeant Scott Banfield said Mr Brokenshire had been identified as a recidivist offender. “Mr Brokenshire has been well informed and offered compliance with the infringement notices he has received. This allows him a period of time get his vehicle and his driver’s licence to a point where he can drive legally,” Mr Banfield said. Road users must have the appropriate driver’s licence and the vehicle must have a WOF and be registered, he said. “Police simply want Mr Brokenshire to drive legally and safely on our roads and avoid potentially putting other road users at risk through using an unwarranted vehicle and driving alone on his learner licence.”
