The decision to continue to try and eradicate mycoplasma bovis from New Zealand is a bold call, Ashburton agribusiness lawyer Tim Silva says, but if it can be achieved at the forecast cost then it has to be the best outcome. However, there are a lot of obstacles to overcome if that is to happen. Silva, of Tavendale and Partners, said the biggest challenge will be in the plan’s execution and what the situation is in spring and beyond, which will come down to the Ministry for Primary Industries. “First and foremost, buy in must be achieved,” he said. “That will be tough

in our region, given widely held sentiment that M. bovis is too far gone to eradicate. “This is where unity with the industry groups and, more importantly, the availability of information to support eradication becomes crucial. “We have to have faith in the technical advisory upon which the decision has been made, but faith should be based on more than ‘just trust us’.” Silva said from his experience, MPI has to lift its game within the farm gate. “Talking to numerous affected farmers and having been on-farm at the time of NOD (notice of direction) delivery shows a consistent structural lack of information for those affected,” he said.

“I have farmers who were given no plausible reasons at the time of NOD delivery and have been waiting for over a week to understand why they have been targeted. That is not ok. “Fixing these types of problems will take more than just resource – it also needs a wholesale change from a militarised structure to one of collaboration and respect, where the affected farmers are put at the forefront through information and truly effective support from MPI.”

M. bovis decision ‘a bold call’ From P1 Silva was pleased to hear that the compensation process would be streamlined, although he was still concerned about loss of profit and those indirectly affected by the eradication strategy. “These claims will be complex and will require full empathy to different regional and individual farmer circumstances. Again MPI has acknowledged its slow performance to date and we have all heard the stories of farmers that are still waiting. “I am waiting to see a tangible difference and remain hopeful.” Overall, he said, the eradication strategy is an act of sacrifice for the affected farmers and the impact on the few to protect the national herd must be acknowledged. “This being the case neighbours, industry and most importantly MPI must get around those affected, acknowledging emotionally and financially the hit they are taking for the good of the industry. “This support must be tangible, timely and generous, given the cost on the individuals that can’t be measured in dollars alone. “I have been really impressed with the continued mobilisation of DairyNZ inside the farm gate and likewise remain in awe of the great work being done by the Rural Support Trust. I just want to see that partnership approach enhanced by MPI in tangible terms for the tough times ahead.” Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon reinforced the view that the Rural Support Trust had been doing a fantastic job, al-

though he said they needed more resources. He also questioned why Mid Canterbury farmers who wanted support were being told to contact the South Canterbury trust, rather than their local one. “It’s staggering that the Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust haven’t been utilised. We need all the support we can get to help not just the farmers confirmed to have M. bovis, but (also) more help for those going through testing or under movement control.” Falloon said his focus was on ensuring farmers receive fast and fair compensation for their significant losses. “I’ve been calling for the government to make interim payments and they’ve now agreed to do that. “Some of the farmers locally haven’t had an income since January, and with MPI taking away as few as 50 stock a week from affected farms it made no sense for them to withhold any compensation until culling has been completed. “I’ve been working with many of the affected farmers locally and I’ll continue to do that for anyone who needs help.” Hinds-based Labour list MP Jo Luxton, who is also deputy chairperson of the Primary Production Select Committee, said the eradication decision was an incredibly hard one but the alternative was to risk the spread of the disease across the national herd. However, Luxton said the culling of herds near Ashburton was at the forefront of her mind and the mental health of local farmers is an issue she will be robustly championing.

Police seek information on fatal crash

Ratepayers up for 20% of bridge bill

Police are appealing to the public for any information that could help them in the investigation of a fatal crash earlier this month. One Mid Canterbury man was killed and two Mid Canterbury men and one Mid Canterbury woman were hospitalised after their car flipped and hit a fence on Wakanui Road early on May 19. Police have named the man who died as 23-year-old Timothy “TJ” Walker, and the police Serious Crash Unit have been investigating the accident. Yesterday, senior sergeant Phil Dean said the police would like to make an appeal to the public for information. He said he encourages people to get in touch if anyone has any information, or can assist police in any way with their investigations. Ashburton Police can be reached on (03) 307 8400. As investigations continue, Dean said local police are also speaking with residents in the immediate area around the crash site. The serious crash unit are working to determine the cause of the crash by piecing together toxicology reports, analysis of

Phil Dean the vehicle against mechanical standards, and information to ascertain the vehicle’s speed at the time of the crash. Initial observations from the site and those who were on hand immediately after the accident suggested that speed was a factor. The area has a 50km/h speed limit, and there is a moderate bend in the road about 50 metres from the crash site. Police are unable to comment on any preliminary findings until the Serious Crash Unit investigation has been completed. Dean said police are looking at not only why it happened on the day, but also what can be done to prevent it happening in the future.

Ashburton ratepayers will likely pay 20 per cent of the cost of a second bridge over the Ashburton River. Ashburton District councillors were in agreement, bar one, when they discussed payment options for the bridge as part of their longterm planning yesterday. The 20 per cent contribution was also the one favoured by submitters to the long-term plan, that option finding 77 per cent support with those who made submissions. Council would take out a loan for its portion and press for Government funding for the rest. The project may qualify for new regional funding promised by Labour. There was less support for council shouldering 49 per cent of the total cost and even less support for council paying all costs associated with the bridge – other options council canvassed on. New Zealand Automobile Association national council member John Skevington, from Ashburton, offered his organisation’s help to put pressure on transport authorities in Wellington to highlight the bridge and other traffic issues to decision-makers. The 20/80 per cent cost split was fair, in his opinion. He said it was “unethical and unacceptable” that projects to convert roundabouts on Walnut Avenue at West Street and East Street to traffic lights had been removed from NZTA’s work programme. He also described congestion issues on State Highway 1 through Tinwald as a disaster. Skevington suggested traffic lights at the T-intersection of Grahams Road and the highway as a cheaper option of managing traffic until the bigger bridge picture

Earlier in the week, Rodger Letham had urged council to get on with the second bridge and fund the cost on their own. Temperatures are plummeting into the negatives as Mid Canterbury heads into winter, and Mt Hutt staff could not be happier. They are operating their snowmaking guns around the clock, helped by the mercury dipping to minus nine overnight Monday. Similar temperatures are expected throughout the week, as the MetService forecasts a settled period. Meteorologist John Law said the coldest spots nationwide this week were inland Otago and Canterbury. “The cold air that arrived last week coupled with the still, clear conditions this week make for the perfect set up for some frosty nights,” he said. Methven dipped below minus one on Monday night, and minus two was forecast for last night, as well as tonight and Thursday night. It has come at just the right

time for Mt Hutt, gearing up for opening day on Friday next week. An overhaul of its snowmaking system means it can crank all its 86 guns into gear all at once. Consequently the ski area may be able to open all its ski lifts, including the triple chair, from day one. Spokesperson James Urquhart said there was a buzz in the air as staff arrived for the season, and snow was churned out by snowmakers, adding to the natural snow base of about 25 centimetres. The snowmaking overhaul involved new compressors. “We have been increasing firepower every year, always getting more guns and better guns, but we never had the pressure to have them all on at the same time, but now we do,” Urquhart said. Finishing touches are being made and yesterday Mt Hutt Helicopters flew the ski area’s large T60 gun up to the summit.

A burglary at the Mayfield Golf Club has prompted an appeal – and a warning – from police. Fuel cans and tools including an angle grinder were stolen in an incident which occurred between 7pm on Saturday and 9am on Monday. Police have recovered a security camera image of a car, which they are hoping may help to identify the offender responsible. Anyone who thinks they recognise the vehicle, or anyone who has any other information can contact Methven Police on 03 302 8200. Meanwhile, Ashburton police senior sergeant Phil Dean said it was noticeable that the offender had targeted a reasonably isolated area. While they run the risk of being more noticeable in the darkness, there would likely not be a lot of people around to catch them, and people are less likely to enforce strict security measures.

Mid Canterbury schools are getting stricter on preventing sugary drinks on campus, but have stopped short of banning the products. Community and Public Health (CPH) promoter Pup Chamberlain said most schools in the district generally support a water and milk only policy, encouraging parents to pack drinks with no added sugar. The New Zealand Dental Association wants a complete ban at schools, a stance supported by health advocates as New Zealand faces an obesity epidemic and

Tributes flow for those killed in pursuit crash Grieving friends and family members of a 12-year-old girl killed in a police pursuit crash on Monday have spoken of their love and heartbreak. Meadow James was the front seat passenger of a stolen Subaru that slid into a ditch and hit a power pole near Palmerston North about 1.30pm as it fled police. She was killed at the scene. The 15-year-old driver, Ihaia Maxwell, later died in hospital. Police are yet to name the two youngsters. Another female passenger, 15, is in a stable condition after receiving serious injuries in the crash, which happened about 90 seconds after a police officer tried to pull the vehicle over and gave chase. Police in the area had been warned to look out for a stolen vehicle that was possibly being driven by Ihaia, who was in breach of his bail conditions. Ihaia’s grandparents Dennis and Kat Maxwell told 1 News about their much loved grandson who had a supportive whanau, who had chosen the wrong path. “Definitely full of life had a lot of potential as you know young kids do. It’s just heartbreaking that he went down the road he did go down. We know it’s been quite difficult for his parents, but you know he had a pretty supportive whanau and, you know things just happen, and this is the end of the unfortunate events,” Kat said. Dennis said he did not blame the police for the crash or pursuing the car. “That’s their job.” “It’s our moko and we love him but we can’t turn back the time. We just can’t.” Friends and relatives shared their grief yesterday in emotional tributes posted on social media. Meadow’s sister’s online tribute says: “Always you sista ... say hi to Bruv for me.” A woman who said she was one of Meadow’s “many aunties” posted a long message on Facebook about the incident. “One of these many kids, is my niece ... day to day, I used to tell her and her older sister ... not to be so hood, not to hang around bad influences and not to do stupid shit like this for example. “You never listened and now look where you are Meds ... look how many of us you’re putting through heartbreak right now. Look how much of our family you’re about

to bring together to send you off ... this is not the way I imagined to see everyone again ... especially to see my 12-year-old niece lying in her coffin.” Another woman said Meadow was “taken way too young”. “It saddens me that some people don’t realise their influence on others. The world hasn’t seen enough of you! Twelve years of having your smiles and laughs. Twelve years too short.” One person who said she was a friend of both Meadow and Ihaia said she would cherish every memory made with both of them. Another woman wrote: “R.i.p nef ihaia.” District commander Superintendent Sue Schwalger said on Monday an officer saw the wanted Subaru being driven on Monrad St about 1.30pm. “Police signalled for the vehicle to pull over and the driver failed to stop. “The Subaru continued driving, travelling on to Pioneer Highway and crashed into a ditch hitting a power pole at the intersection of Shirriffs Rd.” The tragedy comes less than five years after Meadow’s brother, Leif James, died in hauntingly similar circumstances. A coroner’s report says the brother was 18 when he died in October 2013 after getting into the car which being driven by a friend. A sighting of the stolen car sparked the chase which lasted 80 seconds before the driver lost control on a corner and slid into the path of an oncoming ute, fatally injuring the 18-year-old. The car was going about 135km/h in an 80km/h zone when it spun out. The teenager died in hospital the day after the crash. Meadow James’ Facebook page shows a tribute to her brother. “R.I.P you were gone so early and in a tragic way,” she wrote. “It’s sad that I didn’t get to see you as much as I could’ve but then again you were locked up nearly all the time. I still remember when you yous (sic) to call me fat ass and push me off the couch. I hope you’re having fun and i love youuu.” She also posted a tribute to Morocco Tai, the 15-year-old who died in a stolen car during a police pursuit in Auckland in October last year. - NZME

Do we really need a second bridge? T

here’s renewed energy for the building of a second urban bridge in Ashburton, but it has to be asked – is it really all worth it? Yes, there are times in the year when traffic gets frustrating through Ashburton. But those occasions are reasonably rare, nothing like what those from major centres deal with on a daily basis, yet we for some reason feel we must have this second bridge because it will automatically solve all our problems of being an extra five or so minutes late home at night. Growing up in a town where the first sign of a pending traffic jam was having to give way at the town’s main intersection, the frustration about slow moving traffic is understandable.

But should this community, no matter how invested it is in the idea, be willing to fork out some serious amounts of money to ensure that the bridge goes ahead? Perhaps not. Surely that kind of money would be better being invested in fixing the roads that we already have. You know, the ones that we are always complaining about. The ones that are ruining our cars due to the roughness of their condi-

tion yet seem to be no closer to getting fixed than they were two or three years ago. If that’s the compromise we have to make to ensure our future safety, by being willing to be a bit more patient when the main road through town is busy then surely it is a compromise worth making? Yesterday’s deliberations around the funding model for the second bridge after the submissions on the long-term plan at council saw a serious move towards us picking up 20 per cent of the bill and NZTA forking out for the rest. That is a far better option than having to pay for the lot ourselves, that’s for sure. But is it truly necessary spending at a time when everything is costing more and more for the

average New Zealand household. I’d even go against the trend and suggest that we don’t have a really major traffic issue here in Ashburton. Yes, we did at Easter weekend – but that was a freak occurrence caused by one-off factors that aren’t everyday issues. Generally though, traffic flow is pretty good through the township. Of course, it’s busy at peak times, but any road in the country is. You can make an example at any township in the country that there are points in time where the traffic flow is frustratingly busy. Even locally, Methven is hectic to get across one side of the main road to the other at certain times of the day and I pity anyone who has to get across the main road in

To look at something on face value and decide that it’s going to fix all the problems at once is admirable, but surely there is enough evidence out there to suggest that there is no real proof to say that a second bridge is going to somehow magically solve all of our traffic problems? The main roads will still be busy, because they are main roads. Any secondary roading option will only become the scapegoat when it’s needed and hardly justify its existence by the traffic that passes over it.

Council on a winning roll I

t was incredibly exciting to hear of Ashburton District Council’s big win at the Association of Local Government Information Managers (ALGIM) Awards on May 14. The council’s information management team took away the Information and Records Management Project of the Year award at the ceremony in Wellington. The project, titled Mother of all Migrations, won for its ground-breaking approach to successfully transferring digital document files from one platform to another. Ashburton District Council beat out outstanding entries from councils across the country to take the title. I’d like to congratulate project manager Leonie Robinson and the rest of the project team for their involvement in this work. The time, knowledge and expertise invested in the new system, to ensure its success, truly deserved to be recognised at the highest level. The ALGIM awards encourage and celebrate local government innovation and the Mother of all Migrations was said to be one of the most innovative information management projects in recent years. In fact, it is the first time a council in New Zealand has implemented this type of system

on such a large scale. Considering that it was developed by a team of five people, that’s no mean feat. The strength of the project was that it took into account the issues faced by councils around the country, what solutions had been implemented already, and which of those worked and which didn’t. It sparked plenty of interest among those that attended the ALGIM awards and may be adopted by other New Zealand councils to shape the way they record and manage digital documents. The Mother of all Migrations project was undertaken as part of a larger process to update the way council staff store records and information. Since September 2016, the council’s information management team has been working on developing a new Electronic Document and Records Management System (EDRMS). It allows council to review each document held on old

storage systems; to weed out duplicate documents or those that do not need to be retained; and allocate others to a new location within the EDRMS. It sounds simple but the transferral of documents is a complex and challenging task, which is why many councils have yet to tackle it. Ashburton District Council was however fully supportive of the initiative, as it realised the benefits it would offer the district. The council has a responsibility to its residents to appropriately store and maintain every document it receives, from policies and bylaws to consultation records and feedback from community members. The new system has made accessing these documents a quicker and simpler process, allowing council staff to better serve the needs of residents. The solution has already transferred close to 80,000 council documents to the EDRMS and will continue to migrate documents over the next few years. The information management team has also worked closely with every council department to make sure the new EDRMS fits the requirements of all staff. It has been rolled out in phases during the past 12 months and has received very positive

feedback from those who are using it. By September, all council departments will be using the new system. The ALGIM win was Ashburton District Council’s second major award in the past month. The Our Place campaign, which helped to identify the community’s top priorities for the district in preparation for the draft Long-Term Plan (LTP), was awarded highly commended at the Society of Local Government Managers (SOLGM) conference in April. It was recognised in the Community Relations category, which champions projects and initiatives that demonstrate outstanding results through innovative means of community engagement or empowerment. The focus of the Our Place campaign was to ensure a twoway conversation with residents and its success shows in the 2200 ideas council received in the first phase of consultation alone. Accolades like the ALGIM and SOLGM awards are a celebration of the passion and hard work of not just the teams involved in these projects but every individual council staff member. I would personally like to thank them for their commitment and forward-focused approach to working at the council. Everyone in our district benefits from it.

Ivanka raising questions Ivanka Trump’s brand continues to win foreign trademarks in China and the Philippines, adding to questions about conflicts of interest at the White House, AP has found. On Monday, China granted the US first daughter’s company final approval for its 13th trademark in the last three months, trademark office records show. Over the same period, the Chinese Government has granted Ivanka Trump’s company provisional approval for another eight trademarks, which can be finalised if no objections are raised during a threemonth comment period. Taken together, the trademarks could allow her brand to market a lifetime’s worth of products in China, from baby blankets to coffins, and a host of things in between, including perfume, makeup, bowls, mirrors, furniture, books, coffee, chocolate and honey. Ivanka Trump stepped back from management of her brand and placed its assets in a family-run trust, but she continues to profit from the business. “Ivanka Trump’s refusal to divest from her business is especially troubling as the Ivanka brand continues to expand its business in foreign countries,” Noah Bookbinder, executive director of watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, said.

As Ivanka Trump and her father have built their global brands, largely through licensing deals, they have pursued trademarks in dozens of countries. Those global trademarks have drawn the attention of ethics lawyers because they are granted by foreign governments and can confer enormous value. Concerns about political influence have been especially sharp in China, where the courts and bureaucracy are designed to reflect the will of the ruling Communist Party. Chinese officials have emphasised that all trademark applications are handled in accordance with the law. “The brand has filed, updated, and rigorously protected its international trademarks over the past several years in the normal course of business, especially in regions where trademark infringement is rampant,” Abigail Klem, president of Ivanka Trump’s brand, said in an email. “We have recently seen a surge in trademark filings by third parties trying to capitalise on the name and it is our responsibility to diligently protect our trademark.” More approvals are likely to come. Online records from China’s trademark office indicate that Ivanka Trump’s company last applied for trademarks – 17 of them – on March 28, 2017, the day before she took on a formal role at the White House. - AP

Kiwi lands role in new It The Kiwi actor known for his role on Go Girls, has just joined the all-star cast of the upcoming horror hit It. Deadline first reported Jay Ryan’s casting in It: Chapter Two in an article which was then Tweeted by the star, confirming the news. The film is the second part of the Stephen King horror film based on the 1986 novel of the same name. It sees the children from the first part return as adults to confront the horrific crown Pennywise, 27 years later. According to Deadline, Ryan will play the adult version of Ben Hanscom, the younger version of which was played by child actor Jeremy Ray Taylor. The film is also reportedly set to star Jessica Chastain, Bill Hader and James McAvoy.

The upcoming game, Active Shooter, allows players to choose between taking on the role of a SWAT team member trying to stop an ongoing school shooting – or the role of the shooter themselves. Those who play as the shooter will be shown a tally of the number of civilians and police officers they have managed to kill during their simulated shooting spree, according to the Daily Mail. Anti-gun violence charity Infer Trust has described the game as “horrendous” and in “bad taste” given the recent mass shootings in the US. “Pick your role, gear up and fight or destroy!” the description on the Active Shooter listing declares. “Only in Active Shooter will you be able to pick the role of an Elite SWAT team member or the actual shooter. “Depending on the role, your objective might be to protect and extract or hunt and destroy.” The developer has promised to add a “civilian survival mode” shortly after launch, which will challenge players to survive for as long as possible inside a school environment with a gunman on the loose. Infer Trust has called on Valve – the company behind the Steam online games store, where Active Shooter will be available to purchase – to take the title down before it goes on sale worldwide, on June 6. A spokesperson for Infer Trust told the BBC: “It’s in very bad taste. There have been 22 school shootings in the US since the beginning of this year. “It is horrendous. “Why would anybody think it’s a good idea to market something violent like that, and be completely insensitive to the deaths of so many children?

“We’re appalled that the game is being marketed.” The controversial video game will launch less than a month after 17-year-old Dimitrios Pagourtzis killed eight students and two substitute teachers with a shotgun in Santa Fe High School, Texas. Following the shooting in Santa Fe, Lieutenant Governor of Texas Dan Patrick blamed the creators of violent video games and films for promoting a “violent culture where we’ve devalued life”. Patrick told ABC News: “Psychologists and psychiatrists will tell you that students are desensitised to violence, have lost empathy for their victims by watching hours and hours of violent video games.” The creator of Active Shooter, known via the moniker ACID on the Steam online store, published a statement in response to the criticism. “Since this games storefront has been live, I have been stormed with accusations and heavy critics from people across the globe,” the statement begins. The developer states the video game “does not promote any sort of violence” before pointing to the description of the game as a “dynamic SWAT simulator”. - PA

MPI will be up against bad attitude By Jamie Gray

By anne GiBson Landlords have welcomed a new report out yesterday which differentiated between the effects on health of living in places which had been methamphetamine labs compared to those places where the drug had only been used but not manufactured. Andrew King, NZ Property Investors Federation executive officer, said the report from the Prime Minister’s Chief Science Adviser Sir Peter Gluckman clarified the situation between the two different types of properties and the lower risks to health from living where the drug had only been used. Guidelines on testing for meth contamination in properties were extremely conservative, he said, yet the report was clear about the much lower risk to health of being in places where the drug had only been used. Ron Goodwin, an Auckland landlord, last year feared a potential $140,000 bill after a Whangaparaoa place he owned was contaminated with meth. King said the issue generally had resulted in people having huge fears about property contamination yet their health was not necessarily endangered if meth had only been used but not manufactured. “It seems that a considerable amount of money is being spent on a problem that doesn’t appear to exist,” King said of remediating places where the drug had been used but not made. Fears about property meth contamination had caused many people much anxiety, disruption and money, King said. Yet the expensive process of remediating properties did not necessarily result in any real benefits

to residents’ or tenants’ health for the less-risky properties, he said. The report said: “There are no published – or robust, unpublished – data relating to health risks of residing in a dwelling formerly used only for smoking methamphetamine. Yet, given the relatively low number of confirmed meth labs found, and the very low average levels of methamphetamine found in most houses that test positive for the drug, most New Zealanders will only ever encounter very low levels of residue that are the result of methamphetamine use. There is currently no evidence that methamphetamine levels typically resulting from third-hand exposure to smoking residues on household surfaces can elicit an adverse health effect.” Testing properties was only recommended where meth lab activity was suspected or very heavy use was suspected, the report concluded. Remediation of properties was not justified where lower levels of meth were detected. Phil Twyford, Housing and Urban Development Minister, released the report, saying he was concerned about the anxiety of meth contamination “and a

testing and remediation industry has grown up around this”. The widely held perception was that the presence of even low levels of meth residue in a house posed a health risk to occupants, Twyford said. He said the new report found that remediation according to the New Zealand Standard was appropriate only for identified former meth labs and properties where heavy meth use has been determined. – NZME

The Ministry for Primary Industries will be up against a “don’t give a damn” attitude from some farmers as it attempts to eradicate the cattle disease mycoplasma bovis, according to a Southland farmer whose farm was one of the first to be infected. Ben Walling, who farms near Lumsden, told Newstalk ZB host Mike Hosking that he thought the Government made the right call in attempting to eradicate M. bovis. “Yes, in the long term, I think they have,” Walling told Hosking. Asked if he thought it was possible to eradicate the disease, Walling said: “Yes, but they (MPI) will need to pull their finger out and be a lot more aggressive in chasing it down,” he said. “If farmers get on side with them – help them – I can’t see why not, but if the current attitude by a few of ‘we don’t give a damn’ ... I think they are going to struggle,” Walling said. “A few farmers will think that it’s quite farmable – and I think that that is a large part of the problem,” he said.

400g tin of tomatoes in juice 2T brown sugar 1C beef stock 1C red wine 140g tomato paste 2 bay leaves 2 sprigs fresh thyme

Nutty lamb skewers 450g lamb mince 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1t ground cumin 1t ground coriander 1t ground paprika 2 spring onions, finely chopped 1t salt Freshly ground pepper 3/4 C finely-chopped peanuts 1 egg, lightly beaten 1/4 C breadcrumbs 1T oil Coriander, plus extra to garnish 1 lemon, cut into wedges, to serve 1/2 C yoghurt 1/4 C chopped mint 1T chopped fresh chilli

Preheat the oven to 160°C. Heat the oil in the base of a large casserole dish. Brown the shanks on all sides then remove them from the casserole dish. Add the carrots, celery, onions, garlic and anchovies to the casserole dish. Sauté for 1 minute. Cover the casserole dish and cook over a medium heat for 10 minutes, stirring once or twice. Add the tomatoes, brown sugar, stock, red wine, tomato paste, bay leaves and thyme. Stir to combine. Return the shanks to the casserole dish and season to taste with salt and pepper. Cover the casserole dish and cook in the oven for 2 hours. Increase the heat to 180°C and remove the lid. Cook for a further 30 minutes, basting once or twice during this time. Serve in bowls with mashed potato.

Lamb stir-fry with coriander and ginger 500g lamb stir-fry 1cm piece fresh ginger, grated 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 chilli, deseeded and chopped 1T each lemon juice and honey 2T reduced-salt soy sauce 1T sesame oil 3 spring onions, sliced 2 stalks celery, sliced 100g fresh green beans 8 florets broccoli 2C bean sprouts 2T chopped fresh coriander 2C cooked basmati rice ■ Mix together the ginger, garlic, chilli, lemon juice, honey, soy sauce and sesame oil. ■ Marinate the lamb in the mixture for 15 minutes. ■ Heat a frying pan or wok. ■ Cook the lamb for 2-3 minutes and remove from heat. ■ In a separate pan, stir-fry the spring onions and celery until soft. Add the broccoli and beans. ■ Just before serving, add the bean sprouts and coriander. ■ Add the cooked lamb and toss to combine. ■ Serve with rice.

Moroccan lamb casserole 1kg lamb shoulder, diced 1/2 C flour 1/4 C olive oil 2 onions, diced 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1 carrot, diced 2T tomato paste 1 1/2 C red wine 2 1/2 C water 4T stock concentrate 300g button mushrooms, chopped 4T Moroccan seasoning ■ Preheat oven to 170°C. ■ Dice the lamb and dust in the flour. ■ Heat oil in a large oven-proof casserole dish.

■ In a large bowl place the lamb, garlic, cumin, coriander and paprika, spring onion, salt, pepper ■ Add 1/2 C peanuts, egg, breadcrumbs and combine well. ■ Divide the mixture into 12 balls. Shape each ball on to a skewer to make a kofta shape. ■ Roll each skewer lightly in the remaining nuts. ■ Refrigerate until ready to cook. ■ Heat the oil in a pan and fry the skewers a few at a time, turning to cook on all sides. This will take 5-8 minutes. ■ To make the yoghurt dip, combine yoghurt, mint and chilli in a small bowl. ■ Serve the lamb skewers warm, with a sprinkle of coriander, a squeeze of lemon and yoghurt dip on the side.

Lamb rump with fresh herb butter Four lamb rumps 1T olive oil Salt and freshly ground pepper 1T finely-chopped rosemary 1T finely-chopped fresh sage 1T finely-chopped thyme leaves 1 clove garlic, crushed Herb butter 75g butter, softened 1T finely-chopped mint 1T finely-chopped parsley 1T finely-chopped chives 2t Dijon mustard ■ Preheat the oven to 200°C. ■ Herb butter: Mix the butter, mint, parsley, chives, mustard and lemon zest together in a bowl. ■ Spoon on to a piece of cling film and roll up the ends to form a sausage shape. ■ Refrigerate until needed. ■ Oil the lamb rumps, season with salt and pepper. ■ Sear them in the hot pan until browned all over. Remove from the pan and leave to cool slightly. ■ Combine the herbs and the garlic in a bowl. ■ Drizzle the lamb rumps with a little more oil. Coat with the herb mixture, pressing it on well. ■ Place in a roasting tray and roast for 15-20 minutes. Remove from the oven and rest for 5 minutes. ■ Slice each rump in half and top with a slice of the herb butter.

650g Quality Mark skirt steak 3T seasoned flour 3 medium carrots, finely chopped 1 onion, finely chopped 1 leek, white part only, finely sliced 2 cloves garlic, crushed 3 anchovy fillets, drained 2 bay leaves 1-1 1/2 C Campbell’s Real Stock - Beef 400g can chopped tomatoes in juice Cooked pasta Parmesan cheese

Slater joins his mates

Warriors fan, through thick and thin I

got to meet one of my heroes on Saturday night. For me it was a memorable experience, but for him it was just another photo he had to pose and stick on a smile for. So, who was that hero? Well, first you need to know a little about me for context. My name is Erin and I am a Warriors fan. In recent years, that’s a statement one could rarely make without being laughed at. But this season, the Warriors bandwagon is a popular place to be. But how many fans are true supporters? Have they sat at home on their couches weekend after weekend, season after season, cheering then on to little avail? No, I think not. Me, it’s my birthday this week and as my present my husband and I spent the weekend in Auckland watching the Warriors play the Rabbitohs. It wasn’t the first trip to watch the Warriors for my birthday, and it won’t be the last. When I tell people I’m going

to Auckland to see the Warriors for my birthday, some laugh, assuming that it’s my husband’s idea. But, no. I told him I don’t need the baubles of jewellery or perfume, and what I’d really like is a weekend away to see the Warriors play. It’s not the word ‘Warriors’ that convinced him, more the words ‘weekend away’. So we headed along to Mt Smart Stadium on Saturday night, with said husband reluctantly wearing the Warriors jersey I gave him five or six years ago, which had only been worn by me since. Having not taken a jacket or a hat with him – it was cold and wet – my husband begrudgingly

purchased himself a Warriors hat out of necessity rather than want. I’m glad he did, because that’s what led me to meet my hero. Once in our seats, I decided the hat I had in my bag just wouldn’t suffice. I needed a Warriors hat, too. I ventured down to the merchandise shop, leaving the husband in the stands, and as I walked up to the counter to purchase my hat, off to the side stood Shaun Johnson. I quickly rifled around in my bag to find my phone and asked a random stranger to please take a photo of me with him. “I’m on my own,” I say, and both the great SJ and the man taking my photo say “ohhh” – a ‘that poor loner at a Warriors game all by herself’ type “ohhh”. Photo taken, I say thank you, and walk way heart all aflutter. My one chance to meet Shaun Johnson, and that’s it. No ‘it’s lovely to meet you’ or ‘I’m a huge fan’, or even ‘how’s the injury coming along Shaun?’. Nothing. My brain essentially froze.

Billy Slater has announced he will join the rest of Queensland’s Big Four in retirement at the end of this year’s Origin series. Slater, who has played 29 times for the Maroons, will follow fellow greats Johnathan Thurston, Cooper Cronk and Cameron Smith in bowing out of representative football. The 34-year-old fullback isn’t sure if he will continue playing in the NRL for the Melbourne Storm next year but “it just feels like time” to call an end to his Origin career. - AAP

On the off chance he’s reading this, Shaun it was lovely to meet you, I think you’re an amazing player and hope to see you back on the pitch really, really soon (your team needs you!). I also wish you and Kayla all the happiness in the world. You may laugh and think it’s the Ashburton Guardian, Shaun Johnson’s not going to read that, but stranger things have happened. A few years ago, in my first stint as a sports reporter at the Guardian, I wrote a column about the All Blacks. I can’t even recall exactly what it was about, but I do remember getting a call from the All Blacks media manager afterwards saying that Steve Hansen had read my column and wasn’t very happy. Turns out he did not share my opinion. You never know who’s watching. And, yes, I’m aware the Warriors lost and are now in fifth. It’s early days still.

Massive injury lawsuit The fallout from Mohamed Salah’s Champions League final-ending shoulder injury has continued back in his homeland of Egypt. An Egyptian lawyer has claimed on national television he has launched a €1billion ($1.68b) lawsuit against Sergio Ramos. Bassem Wahba is suing the Real Madrid captain for his challenge on Salah in Kiev and the ‘physical and psychological harm’ it has given the people of Egypt. Emma Armour from Methven was one of around 70 youngsters from around Canterbury taking part in the JION International Karate Dojo’s Shotokan Championships in Ashburton on Sunday. Tomic shot down suggestions he was only playing tennis for money as he cut not so much a dejected but petulant figure following his 6-4 5-7 6-4 6-4 loss to Argentine battler Marco Trungelliti. A brand new Habit

Soroc going out in style The versatile Soroc will close out an already successful campaign when he runs at Matamata today. The lightly-raced five-year-old has two wins and two placings from his last five starts and looks a solid chance again in the Colchester Engineering Handicap (1200m). “I’m hoping he can go out on a nice note and I feel he is up to going to the Hawke’s Bay carnival next season,” trainer Lee Somervell said. “He’s already been down there and ran a good third. “The great thing about him is that he won a $50,000 1400m race at Ellerslie on a Good 3 track about six weeks ago and ran 1.23 and a bit and over the same distance at Rotorua last time he won in 1.33 on a heavy track.

“That gives us options, we don’t need to be worrying about tracks. “All he’s needed is a bit of time.” Soroc will again be ridden by Maija Vance. “He should be a pretty good chance despite the weight (60kg),” Somervell said. “He’s not an apprentice’s horse and Maija gets on well with him.” The stable has a strong hand in the race with Impulsive Habit, the mount of Kate Cowan, also engaged. He was a last-start fourth at Rotorua behind Soroc. “He was a bit unlucky. “He got a check 200m after the start and he was always on the back foot after that,” Somervell said. “He could be a real threat – he’s a wet weather horse.” - NZME

Addictive Habit was an outstanding servant for Lee Somervell and the Cambridge trainer has hopes of a current member of his stable scaling similar heights. The nowretired son of Columbia won 11 of his 39 starts. Progressive four-yearold One Prize One Goal, a last-start winner, has earned a favourable comparison with Addictive Habit. “I think he can develop into an open grade horse, if not a Group One winner,” Somervell said. “For me, he can take over from Addictive Habit.” - NZME

In brief End of rugby for Payne Irish back Jared Payne has been forced to retire because of a head injury. The 32-year-old Kiwi – who played for the Chiefs, Crusaders and Blues from 2007 to 2011 – will become Ulster’s defence coach. Payne, born in Tauranga, suffered a head knock late in the British and Irish Lions match against the Chiefs in Hamilton last June. Samu off to Brumbies Crusaders flanker Peter Samu will join the Brumbies for the 2019 Super Rugby season and is set to be named in the Wallabies’ squad. Rakaia claims Duff Trophy A draw with Collegiate on Saturday was enough to secure Rakaia the first round of Mid Canterbury Rugby’s senior B competition. The 5-all draw with Collegiate was the only game Rakaia had not won in the sevengame first round, and they finished on top of the leaderboard to claim the Michael Duff Memorial Trophy. In second place at the end of the round was Southern, who on Saturday took on Mt Somers and won 22-15. Collegiate finished third on the table while Celtic and Mt Somers were tied for fourth after Celtic’s 48-24 win over Allenton in the last round. Siya Kolisi became the first black player to be appointed captain of the South Africa rugby team yesterday, a significant moment in the Springboks’ 127-year history. Kolisi was named captain for the three-test home series against England next month. He had already become the first black player to temporarily captain South Africa in a test last year when Eben Etzebeth was injured in Wales. Another black player, Chiliboy Ralepelle, captained a South Africa team against a World XV in a 2006 game that didn’t have test status. Etzebeth and Warren Whiteley, who has been South Africa’s regular captain for the past two years, are out injured, so Kolisi was formally given the job by new coach Rassie Erasmus ahead of the start of the season. Springboks captain is the biggest job in South African sport, and Kolisi’s appointment is seen as a pivotal moment for a team and a country still trying to fully emerge from decades of white racist rule under the apartheid regime. Blues re-sign Collins Blues fullback Michael Collins has re-committed to the franchise by signing a one-year extension to his contract. Injury and a recent preference from coach Tana Umaga to select Matt Duffie at the back means Collins hasn’t had as many opportunities this year as he did last year, his first with the Blues, when he played all but one round robin match. Collins, a solid decision maker who is good under the high ball and can attack well on the counter, has played eight of the Blues’ 12 matches so far this season and said he believed in the direction the team were going. No money for stadium Auckland Mayor Phil Goff says there is no money in his 10-year budget for a downtown stadium costing up to $1.5 billion, but there could be funding when the budget is renewed in three years. Goff is discussing plans for a national stadium in the central city with the Government, but says it is unlikely to be built before the 2030s when the city hosts another Rugby World Cup or the Commonwealth Games. He raised the prospect of a new stadium shortly after coming to office in 2016 and has received a pre-feasibility study from PwC, costing $932,000, recommending a run-off between five possible downtown sites and upgrading Eden Park. Goff said there was never intended to be any money in the 2018-2028 budget for a stadium. - NZME

Kevin Durant scored 34 points, Curry sparked another thirdquarter turnaround, and the Warriors earned a fourth straight trip to the NBA Finals by beating the Houston Rockets 101-92 in Game 7 of the Western Conference finals. A massive week of netball for Ashburton College’s A netball team didn’t get off to the best start on Monday night. The College side went down to Kaiapoi High School 38-34 in a Canterbury secondary schools’ netball SuperNet clash at Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre – the first of three big games they’re set to play this week. Monday night’s game was deferred from last Wednesday night and tonight the College side is on the road up to Christchurch

for round three of SuperNet where they’ll face St Andrews, while tomorrow night they’ll take on the unbeaten Celtic A in Mid Canterbury Netball’s ACL premier one competition. College coach Kaye Kennedy said Monday night’s game was extremely tight and her side had chances to draw, if not win, in the closing stages. “The really positive thing was that we came away much more aware of the style of play in SuperNet, which is fast, aerial and every pass is contested really,” Kennedy said.

That continuous learning meant College was getting better with every game. “It’s a massive week for us. “But the more games we play the better the connections are on court, and we did try a few different combinations (on Monday night) and they gelled really well, I think,” Kennedy said. Those new combinations included Emma Stagg, Mia Pearson and Julie Mushonga in defence, and the trio played well, Kennedy said. Monday night’s game was one of two home SuperNet games the College side

have got in quick succession, with Rangi Ruru also making the trip to Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre next Wednesday. Being in familiar surroundings, with plenty of support sideline was great, Kennedy said. “It’s about encouraging the teams to come and I know that Kaiapoi really enjoyed it and loved the stadium. “The coach said to me that it’s a really good team thing to get in a van and travel away now and then, so hopefully more schools will take us up on the offer,” Kennedy said.
