Ashburton’s Muslim community have returned to the Ashburton Masjid for the first sessions of Friday prayer since the Christchurch terror attack. The Masjid re-opened on Monday after being closed in the week following the attack as many of the members spent time in Christchurch attending funerals for those who were killed. “It is good to be back, people are still in Christchurch (attending the national memorial service) so it was not the same numbers as usual but it was still good,” Ashburton Muslim Association president Mohamed Diab said. “It is good to show that we are back here again, that we are happy to be here and that we do not fear. “We are sharing the love, we are broken hearted, but we are not broken spirited,” he said. Armed police stood guard outside of Masjid as a sombre reminder of the events of two weeks ago, but a thankful thumb’s-up and smile from a departing visitor to the mosque showed their appreciation of the security their presence provides. A New Zealand Police spokesperson said police did not have a timeframe for how long an armed presence would remain nationwide at mosques. It was being provided for the safety and reassurance of the community. “The national threat level remains high, and our vigilance and visible presence will continue at this time,” the spokesperson said.

Members of the Methven Fire Brigade and the Methven Lions will be on the streets of Methven today with the aim of delivering one free smoke alarm to every household in the town. Station officer Ash Pace says they are anticipating they will visit approximately 800 houses, delivering one free smoke alarm and some handy fire safety advice. “We will be giving one free to each house, whether that is adding to the tally of alarms already in that house or giving them their first,” he said. “We will also be checking the exist-
ing smoke alarms and also doing fire safety checks for things just as plugs piled on each other and keeping stuff a metre from the heater.” The alarms have been paid for with funding from the Fonterra Grass Roots Fund and the Lions Foundation, while the Methven Lions will also help out with manpower. “Anyone we have missed we will try to catch up with next weekend or at another time, that is the good thing about a small town we will soon know if we have missed you,” he said. The firefighters will hit the streets at 9am and expect to be wrapped up by early afternoon.

More than $1.6 million was lost from the Ashburton District’s economy from January to September last year through money poured into pokie machines, equating to $70.41 for every person aged 18 and over. The $1.6 million plus loss is money that is not returned in prizes from gaming machine investment. In an Ashburton District Council report, the hard facts of the district’s gambling habits were spelled out. The annual loss, however, was smaller than that in many local authorities with the district ranking 38th out of 67. The council is currently reviewing its gambling venue policy and has undertaken a social assessment survey that focused on the social effects of pokie machine gambling including problem gambling. The council’s gambling venue policy limits the number of new gaming venues and the number of machines going into new venues rather than significantly impacting on existing venues. Over the past three years both venues and machine numbers have reduced, however the number of residents seeking problem gambling intervention services has increased since the last re-
view. Per capita numbers, however, are lower than the national average. As at September last year there were 12 venues with 134 pokie machines between them. The average number of machines per venue is 11.1, well below the national average. All of the district’s machines are in licensed premises with 102 in pubs or taverns and 32 in chartered clubs. A minimum of 40 per cent of gaming machine profits must be given to the community in the form of grants and over the past year, the largest of those, the Lion Foundation, gave $1.5 million away. Other charitable foundations disbursing funds from gaming machines in the Ashburton District are the New Zealand Community Trust, Trillian Trust, Air Rescue Services, The Trusts Community Foundation, Four Winds Foundation, Trust Aoraki Ltd, Pub Charity, Christchurch Earthquake Recovery Trust and NZ Racing Board. From the grants made last year, racing was the biggest winner at 22 per cent followed by community groups, 14 per cent and education 12 per cent. The remaining grants were spread across a wide range of sporting codes and community services and activities.

“Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?” That is what Big Little Theatre Company students will be asking when they perform at Trott’s Garden on Sunday. They will be breathing life into lines from playwright William Shakespeare, as they present Shakesperience from 2pm to 5.30pm. And it looks like the weather will indeed be like a summer’s day, with temperatures forecast to climb into the mid-20s. Pupils Bella Casey-Solly, 12, Leah Maw, 12, and Esme Heffernan, 13, are among students from across the company who are rehearsing lines from works by the 16th Century bard. The trio’s performance space will be near the Trott’s Garden pond, where they will present a dance to a musical version of the sonnet “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?”, as well as acting a segment from The Tempest. They admit understanding Shakespeare has not always come naturally to them. But their Big Little teachers had
gone through lines with them. This had been very worthwhile for the benefit of their acting, which they were looking forward to sharing with visitors on the day. “Because if we don’t know what we are saying, we can’t really recall the feeling from it,” Esme said. Parent Kim Solly said students were rehearsing flat out to ensure the performances would be of the highest standard. Various picturesque areas of the expansive gardens would provide natural outdoor stages, as audience members visited throughout the afternoon and viewed performances as they toured around. “It’s always a challenge to take if from the stage to outside, and use your new stage, but it’s a great stage,” Solly said. The gardens were looking magnificent in all their end-ofsummer glory. Tickets are $25 with a complimentary glass of bubbles, $20 for under 18s, and funds will go to the students’ trip to perform at Globe Theatre in London in July.

Fonterra Darfield opens gates to public Mid Canterbury people keen to have a look around Fonterra’s Darfield site will have the chance next Saturday, April 6. Darfield is one of the milk company’s newest sites, built in 2012, and around 280 people work there processing 257 tanker loads of milk daily. The plant’s operations manager Harriet Van Genne-Knape says her team was excited to offer
a rare chance to look behind the scenes and see what happens at the plant. “We take the best milk from Canterbury and turn it into products that make their way across the globe to places like South East Asia, China and the Middle East.” She said the site was efficient and sustainable, and home to the world’s joint-largest milk dryer and a distribution centre the size
of seven rugby fields. “Sustainability is a real focus for us and we’re on track to saving around 100 tanker loads of water a day, thanks to a new reverse osmosis plant,” Van Genne-Knape said. Milk from Mid Canterbury dairy farms is processed on the site, which was opened by the then Prime Minister John Key five years ago.

Science best climate change adaptation tool By Sue Newman

Climate change might be a global issue but there needs to be change at country, district and an individual level says National MP Todd Muller. As national’s climate change spokesman, Muller has been travelling New Zealand, holding public meetings and talking carbon emissions, the role of science in providing solutions and the economic implications of a changing climate. While young people might be very aware of climate change and how their future might be very different, Muller said he was pleased that at many meetings there were many older people who were intensely interested in the issue.
“They want to know what’s going on, to understand it for their children and grand children, but you talk climate change to a 10 year old and they can see the effects of climate change will be a problem in their lifetime,” he said. Muller and the National Party are working with the government to set a legally binding pathway on carbon emissions through the Zero Carbon Act.This would drive meaningful climate change action in New Zealand and a commitment to zero carbon emissions by 2050 or sooner. In simple terms the act would set greenhouse gas emissions targets into law. While climate change knowledge and predictions are founded in science, science also has a huge role to play as part of the solution,
Muller said. That approach could mean an adjustment in thinking such as accepting that biotech enabled pasture species might be need to be grown for drought resistance. That might not sit well with people who did not like science tampering with nature. Change had to be practical and pragmatic, he said. “What that means is if you’re going to be influenced by science you need to be influenced by all science, you can’t just pick and choose.” Taking steps to reduce the impact of climate change and providing answers to maintaining a thriving economy in a different climatic environment required not just national policies, it also required work to be done at local
levels, Muller said. “It’s easy to think this will happen regardless what we do, but New Zealand has always done the right thing, seen the opportunities challenge presents and at coming up with new ways of doing things to have an economic advantage.” Muller had high praise for Canterbury farmers and rural businesses, the data they collected and the way they monitored the impact of their business on the environment. “This gives us so much confidence for the future.” And that future would be one where climate change would be a significant influencer in the economy of district in New Zealand, he said.
Government funding of $381,000 announced this week will be a shot in the arm for the agricultural industry’s ongoing campaign to recycle and re-use, says Mid Canterbury farmer and Federated Farmers environmental spokesperson Chris Allen. The money will be used by AgRecovery to run more pop-up collection events, similar to two trial events that took place in Geraldine and Matamata last year. Close to 20 tonnes of material was collected in two days. AgRecovery has been working with farmers since 2006 to provide alternatives to burning, burying and stock-piling of farm waste. Allen said well over 2000 tonnes of agrichemical plastic containers and other materials had been diverted from landfills or harmful disposal practices. “Farmers are highly motivated to do the right thing for the environment, and this programme shows them that products once considered rubbish have a value, can be recycled and re-purposed for products such as underground utility coverings and building materials,” he said. Farmers in Mid Canterbury are already able to drop off agrichemical containers at nearly 100 collection points around the country, including Molloy Ag in Methven. Manufacturers who participate in the programme fund it by paying a levy on the products they sell. Allen said funds from the Ministry for the Environment’s Waste Minimisation Fund announced at the South Island Agricultural Field Days in Kirwee this week will enable AgRecovery to hold a series of pop-up waste recovery events. As well as agrichemicals and other containers, farmers will be able to bring along other farm waste such as fertiliser bags, used oil, scrap metal, silage and balage wrap and other soft plastics.

Bruce Moffat reckons he won’t get much sleep over the next 72 hours, instead, he’ll be chasing a film crew around Mid Canterbury. The Experience Mid Canterbury general manager has recruited Kyle Mulinder’s company Bare Kiwi to video the sights, sounds, actions and people of the district for a promotional clip that will take our place to the world. Over three days the crew will travel the district from coast to the back country and during that time will collect hours of footage that will eventually be trimmed down to just two minutes. It’s a lot of work, most of which will be discarded, but the end result will be a product that will be stunning, Moffat said. The video will be launched in May at Trenz in Rotorua where it will be showcased to travel wholesalers and it will also be widely available on Experience Mid Canterbury’s social media sites. On Friday the video crew were filming around Ashburton’s streets and cafes, at the Art Gallery and Heritage Centre and at Ashburton Airport filming the

‘Newfound compassion needs to blossom’ Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has urged New Zealand to be a world leader in the fight against extremism as a legacy of the Christchurch terror attacks. The 50 victims of the mosque shootings on March 15 were remembered at a solemn National Remembrance Service at Hagley Park yesterday. Ardern told dignitaries from nearly 60 countries and a crowd numbering in the thousands that a sense of unity had enveloped her country over the past two weeks. However, she doesn’t want that sensation to fade, particularly the newfound compassion towards a Muslim community that had blossomed following “our darkest hours”. “The challenge now is to make the very best of us a daily reality, because we aren’t immune to the viruses of hate, of fear. We never have been,” Ardern said. “But we can be the nation that discovers the cure. Let that be the legacy of the 15th of March, to be the nation that we believe ourselves to be.” She called on international leaders in the audience, including Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, to collectively condemn the cycle of extremism that had become a global plague. A survivor of the attacks, Farid Ahmed set the tone for the service when he said he forgave the gunman who committed the atrocity. Ahmed lost his wife Husna Ahmed in the attack and was wounded himself but said he didn’t want hatred to be the prevailing emotion. “People ask me, why do you forgive someone who has killed your beloved wife?” he said. “I don’t want to have a heart like a volcano. A heart like that would hold anger, fury, rage and hatred.

Australian Brenton Tarrant is the alleged gunman who is charged with murder and is expected to face a raft of further charges next week. Heavily armed officers patrolled the central city park, with snipers and elite staff from Australia reportedly boosting police numbers in what has been de-
scribed as the country’s biggest security operation. Mr Morrison was joined at the service by Australian opposition leader Bill Shorten and Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove. The trio and their wives earlier laid flowers at the adjacent Al Noor Mosque, the scene of one of the attacks. After the service Mr Morrison paid tribute to a “beautiful, powerful” memorial for the victims and survivors of the massacre. He told reporters it was “deeply moving” to hear the names of the 50 people who were killed. “Today, New Zealand has responded to hate with love.
They’ve responded to violence with peace. And I think that is a very, very powerful message. “And for Australia, while this didn’t happen on our own shores, it certainly felt like it did, because of the closeness of our two countries,” Mr Morrison said. Mr Shorten said it was particularly galling an Australian was charged with murdering 50 innocent worshippers. “Australians are ashamed this person was an Australian,” he told Sky News. Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel described yesterday’s national remembrance service for the Christchurch mosque shooting victims as incredibly moving. “I don’t mind admitting, I cried like a baby, it was such an emotional occasion for everyone and the speakers were absolutely amazing,” she said. The applause for prime minister Jacinda Ardern was thunderous and was clearly heartfelt and continued for a long time, Favel said. “My heart just broke when two little girls, daughters of one of the victims got on stage and spoke about their father. They said ‘he was a nice man’.” Those simple words brought tears to many eyes, she said. A particularly poignant moment came when the prime minister requested that both verses of the national anthem were to be sung because the words of the second verse were particularly relevant for the memorial service. “She said we need to live by those words.” The event Hagley Park event was surrounded by tight security and there were several security checks for everyone as they entered the grounds, she said. As one of the many invited guests, Favel said she was with mayors from around Canterbury, but there were also ambassadors from many countries. “I went today as part of wider Canterbury and in my role as Ashburton’s leader representing the district.” While the March 15 shootings would now always a part of every New Zealander’s life, for her, yesterday’s service provided an opportunity to begin moving forward, Favel said. “But that’s me, in my personal space. It’s up to every individual to know and decide when the time is right for them.”

A whistleblower has lifted the lid on a long-running scandal at a Waimate supermarket, reporting illegal food practices to the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) and urging locals to “think twice” before shopping at the store’s bakery department. The allegations include a string of misdemeanours regularly occurring over the past several months at New World Waimate, with a comprehensive log of photographic evidence and secret voice recordings backing up claims made to the ministry last week. Allegations involve regular use of products past their specified use-by date, corrosive metal shavings from both mixing bowls and worn blades finding its way into bakery products and blatant non-action from senior management when advised of the poor practices carried out. Ministry of Primary Industries manager food compliance Melinda Sando told the Timaru App she was aware of the allegations and was working with Foodstuffs South Island to investigate.

encountered during their working stint at the supermarket and felt compelled to report the ongoing malpractices, witnessed first hand over many months. “On many occasions, there has been complaints to management, but they always brush it off and carry on like nothing has happened. It’s got to change and that’s why I’ve come forward,” they said. Photos obtained by the Timaru
App clearly identify ingredients being present in the department well past their use-by date and according to the source, “nothing gets thrown away unless it really has to”. A voice recording, allegedly between the employee and the store’s fresh foods manager, suggests previous attempts have been made to bring the malpractice to the attention of higher ranked management, with the manager clearly ignoring the employee’s concerns and asking staff to overlook correct practices. “If it’s past its used-by date, just price it up,” the recording says. Within the voice bite, the employee also suggests to their superior that the disregard for useby dates is illegal and “could kill someone”, pointing out “the whole store could get closed down if the audit lady found out” and “some staff could get fired”. “Yes maybe, but no, no, no, I don’t think so,” the manager responds. “Who’s the killer here, the one that used the stuff past their useby date? . . . really?” In another recording, the employee raises grave concerns re-
garding mixing bowls and blades used on a daily basis at the store, stating metal and rust of both the bowl and the blades are contaminating bakery product. The manager appears to agree but says, “yes, yes I’m working on that, I want to change that, but I can’t get new bowls and new blades and all of that while these are still usable”. When contacted by the Timaru App for comment, New World Waimate referred the matter to Foodstuffs NZ head of corporate affairs & CSR spokeswoman Antoinette Laird, who confirmed MPI had asked them to undertake a food safety investigation, but could not comment on the allegations until the process was completed. “While we can’t comment on the outcome of the food safety audit, what I can say is that staff are feeling very upset by the misinformation being shared by some individuals,” Laird said. While the MPI investigation is currently active, no further comment from MPI or Foodstuffs will be made, though it is understood the whistleblower is scheduled to meet with MPI officials this week to assist the investigation.

A Muslim family in South Auckland is in shock after someone apparently scattered a bucket full of muck around the side and backyard of their home. A video posted briefly on Instagram shows an empty bucket and what appears to be wet dirt that might have been washed out of roof guttering and has been scattered on the family’s driveway, garden and backyard. Nora Rahimi, a 19-year-old AUT student who lives at the house with her family, said her mother found the bucket and dirt after leaving the house for an hour from about 1pm on Monday March 18, three days after the Christchurch mosque attacks. She said the family now felt unsafe after what they believed was a “hate crime”. “This bucket did not exist in my home beforehand,” she said in an anguished commentary on the video. “Someone has brought whatever this is, soil, manure, whatever it is, the rain has washed it off our cars but they have spilt it over our cars, they have spilt it over our land. They have intruded inside of my backyard.” She said the family asked their landlord whether he had sent someone to clear their guttering, but he hadn’t. The material was not scattered on any of the neighbouring properties, so the family believed that they had been targeted when no one was at home. “So this person had known, whether they were watching until someone left the house, we don’t know,” Rahimi said. The family is Kurdish and came to New Zealand as refugees in 2003 because they were not safe in the parents’ home countries of Iran and Iraq. Rahimi said she now felt unsafe in New Zealand too.
“It has unfortunately been happening to a lot of non-European people since the terrorist did what he did. He encouraged a lot of people to be open with their ideologies,” she said. “But I love the response from New Zealanders as a whole so I’m grateful that I’m here in New Zealand.” Police Acting Senior Sergeant Jade Gardiner said police were called to the house at 2.18pm on March 18. “Police officers attended and spoke with the informant, took photos of the scene and conducted a number of other enquires – a number of which are still ongoing,” he said. “We want to reassure people that Police take all crime, including crimes of prejudice, seriously. We want to encourage all members of our communities to be alert to, and report, all instances of crime. If you see something, please say something. We are here to help.” The incident is one of seven cases reported to a website set up after the mosque attacks, reportislamophobia.nz. Another case dated March 20 in Hastings said: “After a game of tennis our boys went to congratulate the teams on their win and a Caucasian boy directly said you look like a Muslim and I want to shoot you.” Lawyer Deborah Manning, who helped to set up the website, said the Caucasian boy was a teenager. “Where are teenagers getting those viewpoints from? It’s a real worry,” she said. In another post dated March 26 in Mt Eden, a woman reported that another woman abused her on a bus for wearing a hijab. “She said I’m evil and rude and I should not be in NZ. High-rise fire claims 25 A fire in a high-rise office building in Bangladesh’s capital has been brought under full control with the death toll climbing to 25, fire officials said yesterday. The blaze that burned for several hours had trapped people inside the building, some shouting for help from windows on upper floors and the roof. But fire officials later said most had been rescued. By yesterday morning, no smoke was visible and firefighters and forensic investigators were working at the scene. Mostak Ahmed, a deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told The Associated Press that the death toll rose to 25 with all but one identified. Based on information provided by relatives, no one appeared to still be unaccounted for, he said. “Still we are checking, if someone comes to us we will verify,” he said. The fire injured about 70 people, many of them now being treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s burn unit. City seeks $130K from Smollett for investigation City officials have ordered Jussie Smollett to pay $130,000 to cover the cost of the investigation into his report of a street attack that police say was staged to promote his career. A letter from the city’s legal department to Smollett and his attorneys said that figure covers overtime worked by more than two dozen detectives and officers who spent weeks looking into Smollett’s claim, including reviewing
video and physical evidence and conducting interviews. Those resources, the letter said, “could have been used for other investigations”. Hours earlier, President Donald Trump tweeted that the FBI and the Department of Justice would review the “outrageous” case, calling it an “embarrassment” to the country. Newshub reporter Mitch McCann faced the challenging task of presenting the breaking news of the Christchurch terror attack to the nation just over two weeks ago. Guardian reporter Jaime Pitt-MacKay caught up with him to discuss the challenges of that day, and his career so far.
itting down to enjoy a bagel was the only thing on Mitch McCann’s mind at 1.30pm on March 15, but within moments it turned into a whirlwind of information and emotion as he anchored Newshub’s breaking news coverage of New Zealand’s darkest day. “We often get stories that never turn out to be that big, but it became pretty clear it was different in this case,” he said. “I remember even asking if I should put on a suit and I came out after putting it on and everyone was running getting ready to start the show. “I had never done anything like it before.” McCann was only ready to present the news that day due to fellow Mid Cantabrian and regular Newshub live at 4pm host Susie Nordqvist being away. Starting with very little information, McCann anchored the broadcast live from the Auckland studio, cutting to reporters on the ground in Christchurch. “There was pressure to get as much out as we could, but there was also concern that it had to be correct,” he said. “We were aware that there were people watching all over the country and overseas, there was a lot of adrenaline pumping.” Originally from Ashburton, McCann spent his high school days at Christchurch Boys’ High School before going to broadcasting school in the city, giving him the feeling of being a long way from home as the news unfolded throughout the afternoon. “I am a Cantabrian, and at that time I felt a very long way from home. It is only a one-hour flight down the road, but it felt so much further away,” he said. “I remember sitting there during a story and what I had to say next flashed up on the autocue and it said ‘we understand 27 people have died’. “We had only been reporting six dead up until that point and I remember looking over to the

control room with all the producers in it and mouthing ‘oh my god’.” The incident has since been described by many as New Zealand’s darkest day, and McCann said it was difficult to keep his emotions in check throughout the broadcast. “Watching it back I could tell
I was trying to not sound too shocked,” he said. “I was worried the message would get distorted if I did, so I tried to remain as calm as possible. “Once I got out (of the broadcast), the adrenaline was still pumping and I wanted to keep going so I was helping other
people write their stories, I didn’t really feel like sitting down or eating.” It was in a taxi outside the office where the true nationwide impact of the attack dawned on McCann. His taxi home to collect another suit was being driven by a Muslim man who was incredibly upset by what had happened.
“I hadn’t thought so soon of the importance of what had happened. His wife had rung him 20 times while he was in prayer and was incredibly sad about everything that had happened,” he said. It has been just over three years of studio lights, suits and live TV broadcasts out of Auckland for

McCann, who certainly does not want to forget his roots in Mid Canterbury. “I think the old man would be the first person to tell me if I was turning into a Jafa,” he said. “It is a very different life to Ashburton, but I do like to get home as much as I can, which works out to be every 5-6 months.
“It is a bit more relaxed compared to Auckland and it is good to get south of the Bombay Hills every once in a while.” While it might seem like a bit of a novelty, one of the things he misses the most about the district is being able to kit up for Tinwald Tigers and play some junior rugby.
“In this job you don’t get a lot of weekends and you don’t get a lot of time to play sport, and I really miss playing rugby, the Mid Canterbury age-grade stuff and heading down to Tiger Park and Ray’s Gym,” he said. Still only 24, McCann says he cannot see himself settling down to only host shows at this point,
with plenty of desire to still get out and about and report on the ground. “I enjoy presenting and I am looking forward to doing it more, but I am not fixed on it and I am still interested in travelling more,” he said. “I am hoping to be part of our Olympics coverage next year and there are some great opportunities to travel through the company.” It is getting those chances to travel that McCann looks back as high points of his career so far. “Travelling to Tonga to cover Cyclone Gita was incredible but very sad of course and Cyclone Winston before that, the Commonwealth Games were also a highlight,” he said. “One of the biggest moments in my career was when I was covering for our Australian reporter
when the Prime Minister role changed over and Scott Morrison became prime minister. “That was probably one of the biggest weeks of my career as I was the only reporter that we had over there.” With large media organisations like Mediaworks, there is no shortage of experience to fall back on, and there are two experienced journalists that McCann points out as being incredibly helpful. “There are really good people here, Mike (McRoberts) is great, I worked with him at the Commonwealth Games and he is always happy to help out young reporters and Eric Young who hosts Prime News is great for helping out with news reading,” he said. “Susie (Nordqvist) is a good friend so we often sit down and chat about things as well.”

Tarte tatin 2kg green apples (approx 8-10) peeled, cut in half and cored 400g puff pastry 175g unsalted butter 400g caster sugar 200ml whipped cream for serving ■■ Preheat oven to 220°C. Peel the apples, cut them in half and remove the cores. ■■ Dust a clean, dry work surface lightly with flour and roll the pastry to a 3mm thickness, slightly larger than your pan. ■■ In a 25cm cast-iron frypan or heavy-based cake pan, melt the butter over a low heat. Sprinkle the caster sugar over the butter, letting it dissolve and begin to bubble. Refrain from stirring and let it bubble for 5-to-7 minutes, keeping an eye on it. It will start to caramelise. ■■ Remove the pan from the heat. Arrange the apples around the

outside and work your way towards the centre, filling in all the spaces. Return the pan to the heat and cook for a further 5 minutes until the apples start to soften slightly. ■■ Place the pastry over the apples in the pan and tuck in the edges. You may find it easier to place it if you wrap the pastry around your rolling pin. Bake the tart in the preheated oven for 35 to 40
minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden. ■■ Remove the tart from the oven and set it aside to rest in the dish for 15 minutes. SkyCity casino sale unconditional SkyCity Entertainment Group has wrapped up the $A188 million sale of its Darwin casino to US hospitality company Delaware North. The deal went unconditional yesterday after all of the criteria were met, including approvals from the Northern Territory government. The licence runs until 2031 with an option to extend it for another four years. SkyCity bought the Darwin casino and hotel business from USbased MGM Mirage in 2004 for $A195 million. It put the site up for sale last year after writing off $A95
million in 2017 due to new gaming regulations. SkyCity still operates its flagship Auckland casino, and casinos in Hamilton, Queenstown and Adelaide. It’s got major investment programmes underway in Auckland and Adelaide, and, estimates capital expenditure of more than $1 billion on those major projects. The New Zealand casino operator has retained an $A11 million block of land next to the Darwin site, which it plans to sell separately. The shares last traded at $3.80,
having gained 7 per cent so far this year. SkyCity will provide certain services to Delaware to help with the transition. The two companies plan to set up a joint venture to set up an online casino business in the Northern Territory if the state government changes legislation to permit that activity within the next decade. Briefing media ahead of her lightning dash to the capital of the country’s largest trading partner, Ardern said progressing the upgrade of the 11-year-old free trade agreement with China was among priorities in her meetings with China’s two most powerful leaders, President Xi Xinping and Premier Le Keqiang. She indicated the most productive focus was likely to be on areas where there was not already a phased reduction in barriers to access. “There are areas on a phased approach that continue to improve over time,” she said. Rugby sets pace on drawing spectators M
id Canterbury enters into an all too familiar phase of the year today when club rugby kicks off for the new season, with our local senior teams all in action across the district. That will mean that many people from within our community will now have their Saturday afternoon schedules fully booked as they work their way around the Canterbury region watching their chosen team. But what is it about rugby that seems to still draw the crowds to attend matches? I know that, if I head down to the Methven Domain this afternoon to watch Methven take on Southbridge in the opening match of the Division One combined competition, I will be just one of at least a
hundred people standing on the sidelines and enjoying the match. Without being disrespectful, if I was to jump over to the other side of the domain and watch a football match of the same level, I’d struggle to be able to count past 20 spectators. It’s like rugby bucks the trend, but there is no easily identifiable reason as to why. There’s no doubt that it’s a national pastime and something that has gone on from generation
to generation. Communities tend to get behind their senior rugby team and treat them as though they were their provincial side with unwavering support – even if the times are tough on the scoreboard. But they do nothing different. They don’t market the pants of their matches with in your face advertising but, instead tend to feed off local discussions, where one person might mention they’re heading to a match on the Saturday afternoon and seemingly 12 people follow them. It’s quite an impressive sight to behold, really. And today, it’s going to be extra important because, in a very rare occurrence, all five of Mid Canterbury’s senior rugby sides playing
in the combined competition are playing on home turf; Methven, Rakaia, Celtic, Hampstead and Southern – meaning that the rest of the district may seem like a bit of a ghost town apart from the domains and grounds that these clubs play at. Wouldn’t it be great to spread that kind of exposure across all sports being played within the district in any given week. Imagine going to a Mid Canterbury United Football match on the Ashburton Domain and seeing more than a hundred people lining the sidelines and cheering the local side on. Or, heading to the EA Networks Centre on a Thursday night to find it’s standing room only around all four of the courts in action, as
premier level netball is played. They’re just pipe dreams, and even both of the sports mentioned above would agree they’ve got a long way to go to get to the point where they’re drawing the same support as rugby – but it’s something I’m sure is frequently discussed at administration level. So, don’t be surprised if you’re out and about today and the usual Saturday hustle and bustle around the place, particularly in the afternoon, is a little more subdued. They’re probably down at the local rugby grounds, beer in hand, enjoying watching their local side toss the pig skin around for an hour and half while chatting with their mates. Sounds pretty appealing, doesn’t it?

h dear! Winston Peters is sent by Jacinda on a peace mission to Turkey to combat the inflammatory rhetoric of its leader and pocket dictator, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, but falls asleep on the job. Can it be that Winston is approaching his “use by” date, if, that is, he has not already passed it? With the reckless and blood-curdling Erdogan in full flight threatening to return to New Zealand, in coffins, all and any passing Kiwis to whom he takes a dislike, “as were their grandfathers before them”, while simultaneously using extracts from the mosque maniac’s “manifesto” with which to boost his campaign for re-election, our Foreign Minister was facing a tough diplomatic assignment. That Erdogan should be going through the motions of democracy at all seems like a cynical charade designed to convince his people that he believes in such a system – albeit one tailored to ensure his continued hold on power. No doubt, Winston was facing a hard case and a challenging task, but after jetting – at short notice – across the world it seems human frailty, that begins to make itself apparent when one reaches one’s declining years – anytime beyond seventy – has started to take its remorseless toll of the evergreen founder and leader-in-perpetuity of New Zealand First.

Somehow, he persuaded himself that the fiery Turk was becoming less aggressive when Erdogan said Kiwis coming to Gallipoli next month should have no fears for their safety. Such a sudden switch in approach may have befuddled Winston and led him, mysteriously to believe his mission had been more of a success than he had dared to hope, particularly as he was only just awake throughout most of the few hours he spent in Turkey. He was of course, during that time, as dapper as ever and without a single strand of his magnificent head of wavy, greying hair out of place. It was only his bearings he seemed to have lost. Recent events have put Winston in a spot. His aversion to welcoming immigrants into New Zealand is well-known, but on this occasion he has had to turn more of the other cheek than one might have thought him capable. A ‘cleft stick’ might be the best expression to describe Peters’ position in the immediate aftermath of the mosque atrocities in
Christchurch, especially when his leader, to whom he is 2I/C, was breathing love and community well-being from the moment the last shot rang out. That Jacinda has followed this outpouring of affection and support for the Muslim community by instantly banning possession and ownership of all the types of weapon used in the mosques has greatly enhanced her standing in the world and led to demands she be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. When considering other, past recipients of this world-revered icon, it would appear Jacinda Ardern is now very much better qualified to receive it than many of her predecessors. She has, unequivocally, made a substantial contribution to the peace of the world. In such a positive atmosphere of practical love and deep identification with the many Muslim Kiwis, Winston finds himself in something of a dilemma and obliged to tread warily. No doubt, he will adapt to a new set of circumstances as has been his way during a long and tumultuous political career. Meanwhile, Jacinda has given a state-of-the-art demonstration of how to effect gun control in a mere matter of days. Free of the pernicious influence of the National Rifle Association (of America) she and her ministers have made it clear that such weapons are rarely required in New Zealand and, unlike the gun-toting, trigger-happy
citizens of the United States of America, there is no “inalienable right” here allowing us to bear such arms. Somehow, the PM’s firm handling of this issue, as it was when dealing with the immediate aftermath of the massacres, has been taken up by Australian commentators, who have “accused” Ardern of “copying” Australia in her new gun control policy which, they say, mirrors precisely what Australian PM of the time, John Howard did after the killing of 35 people at Port Arthur in Tasmania in 1996. Since those new regulations came into force there has not been another similar incident. If Howard’s innovations have proved so successful it seems wise to follow his lead. That we should be thought to be copying the Aussies – with connotations of criticism – seems extraordinary. Are our cousins across the ditch so touchy as to not to want us to use systems they may have thought of first? Surely not? But they do bowl underarm and sandpaper cricket balls so, perhaps we shouldn’t be too surprised! President Tracey Clark, along with her trusted Committee, Elaine Aldridge, Mel Day, Tim Clark, Claire Tomkinson, Nicolle Ellis, Melinda Driscoll and Volunteers have worked hard over the years volunteering time to this cause and helping animals and their owners alike when tragedy strikes. Now is the time for change and although its sad to see a closure like this there is a silver lining. All volunteers now get a chance to focus again on their own lives by passing on the care of animals in need within the Mid Canterbury area to other capable organisations around the Canterbury region. These organisations are specialised in their given fields, and will continue to assist animals from our area. Who are we? Dean Talbot answers his phone whether it rings at 3pm or 3am.
It’s been just over 10 years since Dean and Lucia Talbot started their business and they sit down to reflect on the rollercoaster journey of emotions and excitement that they have endured over this period. Over this time they have seen the best of humanity and the worst. “We have had two children and employed a number of staff who we also think of as part of the Talbot family. Sitting here 10 years later, we can honestly say that we wouldn’t change a thing,” Dean said. He still has the same passion now that he had 10 years ago when he started Talbot Security Group. Dean and Lucia first met in Ashburton 19 years ago after Dean returned from doing security work overseas. He had been a soldier in the New Zealand Defence Force for nine years before that. “In 2008 the decision was made to form Talbot Security Group, a professional security business, in our home town, we have not looked back ever since.” Dean put together a business plan and after getting knocked back by several banks, he spoke with a business mentor who put him on to Shane Calder at the BNZ in Ashburton. Shane was great to deal with, open to Dean’s ideas and gave them the bank loan that started it all. Dean employed his mate Corbie and they set about finding clients and promoting TSG. Dean is the face on the ground, the first port of call, while Lucia keeps the security

group’s administration and compliance in shape. They are proud of the business they started all those years ago that has developed to meet the needs of their local community. They are also proud of their local roots,

How we started Patrolling is the core business of Talbot security group and entails physically checking buildings, houses and other assets around our district. During patrols they can encounter anything from lights on, unsecured gates and doors, to finding offenders breaking into properties. No two nights are ever the same. The night-time patrols of Ashburton reveal a side of the town only a few see. Dean says private security companies fill a need in the community as people seek reassurance that they and their homes and property will be safe. While the night-time work brings potential hazards, the other services bring variety. In 2009, due to escalating violence within our community, the decision was made to issue our staff with stab-proof vests and these have been mandatory for all TSG officers to wear during patrols ever since. 2010 saw the next natural progression in their business, with the addition of specialist training courses. Dean is passionate about passing on his accumulated knowledge and skill in martial arts training, teaching the victims of crime to defend themselves. Another course that Dean added to his repertoire, was the Hostile Environment Awareness & Travel Safety (HEAT) course. Dean has won international contracts to train Humanitarian Aid workers heading into hostile environments. He says it is rewarding work and he sometimes hears
from his students about how they used his techniques to good effect. In 2014 the decision was made to branch out into alarm installation, alarm servicing and alarm monitoring. This is the electronic division of Talbot Security Group and it has grown ever since. Professional training and development
keep his officers up to date with law changes and the latest security practices. His staff complete at least three months’ training with an experienced officer before operating solo. Their company is the only Mid Canterbury member of the New Zealand Security Association; the association provides au-
dits and guidelines for its members across the country. Dean is regularly contacted by the public to report suspicious activity. When this occurs, they do advise people to contact the police via 111, but when their responsibilities to their customers allow, they will always attend.

What does the future look like? Talbot Security Group’s main focus has not changed from when they started, it is still the protection of our home town of Ashburton. That said, changes are afoot at Talbot Security Group’s Dobson Street base. The bottom floor of the building is being renovated to accommodate a new locksmithing service. Lucia Talbot said the service would include key cutting and new vehicle transponders, and staff would be available to give advice about locks suited to a range of situations in the home and office. They will run a mobile locksmithing and key cutting service as well. Training for the staff has increased in response to recent events and they are currently recruiting. In Ashburton, the team must be versatile as they are called upon to not only provide security, but sometimes to dispense first aid, or even de-escalate a volatile situation. Dean‘s company has tracked burglars and detained offenders until police have arrived. Dean is also running more specialist training courses than ever, to meet the increased demand from companies and non-government organisations for staff training. He teaches men and women to be confident about survival in a range of potentially threatening situations and he shows them techniques to ward off attackers. He recommends the courses to individuals as well. The Talbots are looking forward to another 10 years providing great security services for Ashburton.

Home ground advantage all around By Erin Tasker

Mid Canterbury teams all have one big thing on their sides heading into today’s opening round of the Luisetti Seeds Combined Country Cup division one rugby competition – they all have home ground advantage. And they’ll all be hoping to make the most of it, because all five of Mid Canterbury’s senior rugby teams know how important a win in round one is. With the competition being played in a new, shorter format this season, featuring three pools as opposed to last year’s two sections, getting points on the board early will be important. The 22 teams will play just seven matches each this season, before the top few split off to begin the process of finding out just who will be crowned 2019’s winners. So within three or four weeks, a picture will well and truly be building of what teams are likely to be there or thereabouts at the end. All teams want to be there at the end, and one Mid Canterbury team that has been there at the end over the past two seasons is Rakaia. They’ve made the com-
bined competition final the past two years running, but lost to Southbridge in 2017 and Waihora last year. Rakaia are in pool B and are without captain Jackson Donlan for the first few weeks of the season as he’s overseas. They play Glenmark-Cheviot at the Rakaia Domain today, with a new coaching team at the helm in the form of Kyle Gray and Terry Murray, and only one pre-season match under their belts. They’re not alone. Southern also had just one pre-season game, but they’re a team not lacking when it comes to experience, so they’ll be looking for a strong start when they take to the field against Burnham-Dunsandel-Irwell at the Hinds Domain. Southern are in pool A this season, along with Hampstead, a side that would dearly love to finish in the top half of the draw this season after having been wooden-spoon contenders for a number of seasons now. Hampstead will start their season at home against Darfield today. Last year’s Mid Canterbury Rugby champions Celtic are at home to Prebbleton in pool C, and it will
be a big test for them to see where they’re at. They’ve lost 14 players from their 25-man squad that won the Watters Cup last season, and are already having a tough time with injuries. But, the Celtic side is one that can never be taken lightly. They may have lost a lot of forwards from 2018, but those they’ve retained have got a wealth of knowledge between them. Back in pool B, Methven has good numbers and a fully fit squad to select from for their opening match of the season against Southbridge at the Methven Domain today. Methven will be led on to the field today by a new captain. Prop Matt Groom has taken over the captaincy from James McLeod. All senior games in Mid Canterbury will kick off at 2.45pm. In other pool A matches, Waihora play Ashley and Hornby play Kaiapoi, while in pool B Ohoka play Springston, while Lincoln play Rolleston in what will be a weekly crossover match between pool B and C. The other two games in pool C will see Hurunui play Oxford and Saracens play West Melton.

McKenzie remains at fullback for Chiefs It appears the Chiefs have no desire to move Damian McKenzie back into the No. 10 jersey any time soon. Having returned to electrifying form since shifting back to fullback, McKenzie will again don the No. 15 jersey against the Jaguares in Argentina this weekend, with brother Marty joining the squad at first five-eighth. The side will also welcome back Anton Lienert-Brown, who was a late scratching from last weekend’s trouncing of the Bulls in Pretoria. “This week we want to continue to carry the momentum and confidence we have into the Jaguares match,” Chiefs head coach Colin Cooper said. The side will be without captain Brodie Retallick for the match, who is observing one of his All Blacks stand down weeks. Fellow lock and recent re-signing Michael Allardice will take the lead as captain in his absence.
However, the Jaguares have been a tough task for the Chiefs in recent times, with the Argentinian side tripping up their Kiwi counterparts in Rotorua last year. “The Jaguares are a very passionate team and they have a strong set piece. “We need to maintain a high tempo game and ensure our defence systems continue to improve, if we get that right then we should be in a good space.”

Which puts them in the box seat because they’ve done it before. A surreal build-up to the Christchurch Stadium match has been dominated by both teams primarily paying tribute to those affected by the March 15 mosque terror attacks. There has been little narrative around the Sea Eagles’ winless start to Des Hasler’s second coming or the Warriors’ clumsy loss to the Wests Tigers last week. The theme continued yesterday as Hasler and Manly chief executive Lyall Gorman laid a wreath at the Al Noor Mosque, which both teams have visited this week. They also announced every player at Christchurch Stadium will have #TheyAreUs on their jerseys in solidarity with the families of the 50 victims killed. Warriors coach Stephen Kearney says separating emotion from the pragmatic job of playing well for 80 minutes is a challenge. He should know. His players achieved it with their opening round 40-6 trouncing of Canterbury two weeks ago, just a day after the
Michael Maguire hasn’t ruled out offering evergreen hooker Robbie Farah another deal and backed the Wests Tigers veteran to play on in 2020 if he wanted to. The 2019 NRL season was widely expected to be Farah’s last and he has on numerous occasions insinuated that he was set to hang up his boots. Tickford not thrilled with Supercars tweak Leading Ford team Tickford Racing say they are “not thrilled” with Supercars enforcing technical changes after complaints of an unfair advantage by rivals. But both Tickford Racing and Ford heavyweights DJR Team Penske say they will accept the ruling and their dominant Mustangs will be compliant by next week’s third round, the Tasmania SuperSprint. Supercars announced this week that all Ford and Holden teams must make centre of gravity (COG) tweaks to their cars after conducting tests on 10 vehicles following complaints the new Mustang held COG and aero advantages. Mustang – making a return to Supercars for the first time since 1990 – has claimed all six poles and races this season with DJR Team Penske’s defending
series champion Scott McLaughlin leading the championship. Supercars testing revealed both the Mustang and Holden’s Commodores had a COG edge over their Nissan rivals. Details of the new rules were not disclosed but the ballast will be repositioned in Mustangs and Commodores so their COG matches that of Nissan’s team. The change is expected to impact the Mustangs more than the Holdens. The Nissans will remain unchanged. Ballast can be placed strategically in the car to improve balance and is used to ensure the vehicles meet the minimum 1395kg weight. Tickford Racing – who boast the third-placed driver Chaz Mostert – said they would work with DJR Team Penske to make the necessary changes
but weren’t happy about it. “While we are not thrilled with the situation that has arisen this week, we accept Supercars’ decision and are working with Supercars and DJR Team Penske to make the necessary technical modifications to our cars,” a statement said. “The rules are the rules. “We have won races and a championship abiding by Supercars’ direction and our goals remain unchanged as we pursue more wins and championships no matter how the rulebook reads.” DJR Team Penske said they accepted the ruling but would propose a revised process for Supercars to determine COG in the future. “We are proud of the Mustang that we have developed in conjunction with Tickford, Ford and Ford Performance, and stand by its capability.” - AAP The Mustangs have been ruling the Supercars roost.

Ashburton College’s first XI cricketers begin day two of their final match of the season against St Thomas of Canterbury’s first XI today in a strong position. The visitors hold a first innings lead of 100 runs in the Canterbury youth grades competition two-day match in Christchurch, but at the mid-stage of day one that didn’t look like being the case. Ashburton College batted first and made 120 all out, with Isaac Bazley batting well for his 56 and Devon Flannery adding 27. In reply, St Thomas looked to be cruising and with a bit of luck looked like easily surpassing Ashburton College’s score at 72/1. But the Ashburton bowlers had other ideas and produced a stunning few overs to see St Thomas lose their final nine wickets for just 18 runs. They were all out for 90 runs. Ben Middleton ended with the figures of 3/8, while Angus Jemmett took 3/18 and Will Copland took 2/8. Ashburton began their second innings with a 30-run lead and by the end of day one that lead was 100, with Jemmett 40 not out and Jonty Small 7 not out. Day two gets under way today in Christchurch at the St Thomas of Canterbury fields.

Top field for seniors tennis champs By Erin Tasker

The first ever Mid Canterbury Seniors Championship tennis tournament will be contested at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre this weekend. Peter Leonard from Mid Canterbury Tennis is one of those running the tournament, as well as one of the 78 players who is set to take to the court during the two day event. He said players are coming from around Canterbury to take part in the doubles-only tournament, which has an A grade, a B grade, and a 120-plus grade. The 120-plus grade is for players whose ages when combined, add up to more than 120. To be eligible to play seniors tennis, players need to be aged over 35, and the tournament is open to both competitive and non-competitive players. Leonard himself will take to the court in the A grade section where he will combine with Brent Williams from the Shirley club in Christchurch. They are the second seeds, behind Julian Main and John Honeywell – two past national title holders. No promises, says Vettel Sebastian Vettel believes pre-season favourites Ferrari have worked out why they lacked pace in Formula One’s Australian opener, but he’s stopped short of promising a resurgence in Bahrain. Kohli fires up in IPL Virat Kohli has come out spitting fire and the rest of the cricket world reacted with equal disbelief after more controversy rocked the Indian Premier League (IPL) yesterday. In a week where Ravi Ashwin’s decision to Mankad Jos Buttler has sparked furious debate about the grey area between the rules and the spirit of cricket, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) was the victim of a glaring officiating blunder as it lost to the Mumbai Indians by just six runs. Needing seven to win from the final ball, RCB didn’t even bother taking a single when it was bunted down the ground as it finished on 5/181 in pursuit of Mumbai’s 8/187. But controversy soon erupted when replays on the big screen showed Lasith Malinga had escaped sanction for a front-foot no-ball. The Sri Lankan quick clearly overstepped the mark with his final delivery, which should have given Bangalore one last chance to save its skin with an extra run and a free hit, but the umpire missed it and the game was over. South African superstar AB de Villiers was unbeaten on 70 off 41 deliveries when the innings came to a close and may have been on strike for the final delivery had
the no-ball been picked up. Judging by the form he was in, there’s every chance de Villiers could have pumped the last ball over the fence and changed the result. But he was never given that chance and RCB captain Kohli was fuming at the post-match presentation. “We are playing at IPL level, not club cricket,” Kohli said. “That’s just a ridiculous call off the last ball. “The umpires should have their eyes open, it was a no-ball by an inch. It’s a completely different game altogether (if the noball was called). “So if it’s a game of margins, I don’t know what’s happening. “They should have been more sharp and more careful out there.” Mumbai captain and Kohli’s Indian team-mate Rohit Sharma also had some grim words about the umpiring even though he was on the winning team. “These kinds of mistakes are not good for the game of cricket. “The over before that, (Jasprit) Bumrah bowled a ball which wasn’t a wide ball (which was called a wide),” Sharma said. “They have to watch what is happening. “The players can’t do much

On balls where a batsman isn’t given out, no official checks for a front foot no-ball. It’s that oversight that led to another headline-making match in the IPL. Kohli and Sharma weren’t the only ones upset. Former stars, including international captains, raged over cricket’s refusal not to let technology intervene in cases where obvious blunders have been made. Ex-England batsman Kevin Pietersen is on commentary duty in India and fumed over the decision. “It should’ve been a no-ball and it should’ve been a free hit,” he said. “We can fly drones. We have got Spidercams. We have all sorts of technology, cars that drive themselves. “Should there be a technology in place that just calls a no-ball?” - AAP
Tough calls for Aussies Hard-luck stories and “bloody hard” decisions await as selectors, with input from Aaron Finch, prepare to pick a 15-man World Cup squad and settle on which two batsmen make way for Steve Smith and David Warner. Coach Justin Langer and selectors will meet after the completion of the current ODI series to finalise a 15-man World Cup squad, which must be submitted by April 23. The disgraced duo are fully expected to be included. Tampering ‘widespread’ Former Australian wicketkeeper Ian Healy has blamed officials for letting the practice of ball management get out of hand to the point where sandpaper became involved, and also suggested the Aussies “forgot” just how serious their crime was because altering the condition of the six-stitcher had become commonplace in world cricket. Healy said he believes the Aussies had been ball tampering “for some time” before they were caught. He claimed plenty of teams around the world were ball tampering, though perhaps not so blatantly. “The umpires, please, I was extremely critical of the umpires and the job they were doing,” Healy said. “The desperation we got to was maybe even a sign of what South Africa was doing.” - AAP

It’s not often you can say that a 35-start maiden is faced with one of his best chances to break maiden status, but that’s exactly the case with local pacer Victor Tango at Methven tomorrow. Rex Bennett’s eight-year-old gelding is arguably in the best form of his life currently and a front line draw in the fourth race at the Methven Trotting Club’s final meeting for the season is a key factor in the experienced pacer’s chances. There’s no exact rhyme nor reason as to why Victor Tango is finally starting to live up to his full potential, he’s had an interrupted career through injuries, but Bennett believes the benefit of time may have been just what the doctor ordered. “All of a sudden it’s like he’s just clicked on to what it’s all about and his last six or seven starts have been some of the best of his career,” the Ashburton trainer said. “We’ve had problems with him, he qualified really nice as a three-year-old, but because of injury we never got to the races until he was six, so he’s been a late starter. “But at the moment he feels big and strong and he’s developed a bit of speed, which is something that he never really seemed to have.” Second at the Hororata Trotting Club meeting at Methven back in February, Victor Tango has shown a strong liking for racing on the speed and turning his races into more of a staying contest than a sit sprint affair. So, that often sees him up on the speed and trying to grind his rivals, helped largely by his usually impeccable stand start manners which see him fly the tape when the race begins. “It’s a big asset to have, it helps him get in the right spot for him early on. “So drawing the front line is always a good result with him.” Another local, John Morrison

Classic test for pair A pair of talented three-year-olds trained by Stephen Marsh will test the waters this weekend in the Gr.3 Higgins Concrete Manawatu Classic at Awapuni. Deels Done and Decadence are on an upward trajectory as lightly raced maiden winners. “Given the timing of their campaigns, the Manawatu Classic fits in perfectly and will give us a good indication of where they are at,” Marsh said. “If they can compete at this level over ground, it opens up options in Australia for them. Pearl Series early bird The New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association are calling for final entries for the Pearl Series Early Bird special. The Pearl Series is a bonus scheme for Southern Hemisphere bred fillies and mares, offering bonuses of almost $2.6 million and prizemoney of nearly $2.8 million. The scheme includes 200 individual races for fillies and mares over three seasons’ racing, with bonuses for each race of up to $20,000. The Early Bird is for $920 including GST and closes on Sunday, March 31. After this date, the nomination fee will increase to $1380 including GST. - NZME

Bennett and Morrison will hoping for a quick beginning in tomorrow’s challenge and if on the speed turning for home, there’s every possibility that the so far elusive win might finally eventuate. “He went very good at Waimate last week I thought, he was off the second line so settled back but he showed some speed to get up and around them and that run will have topped him off nicely for this week. “We’re hopeful, we’ve been pretty patient with him and it will eventually come but it would
be nice to get a win locally with him.” Victor Tango is one of a number of runners in the fourth race tomorrow which hail from Mid Canterbury stables. Ben Waldron, Graeme Ward, Michael Heenan, Les Smart and Jim Hooper all have horses engaged while local drivers; Morrison, Leo O’Reilly and Carl Markham have drives in the race. Former local, Maurice McKendry also has a drive in the race as he makes an appearance at his old home track as the club’s guest driver for the day. McKendry, who has won more than 3,200 races in his career and is New Zealand’s second most successful reinsman has eight drives on the 12 race programme.
