New changes to immigration rules might acknowledge huge demand for skilled employees – but won’t benefit Mid Canterbury at all, claims Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon. After acknowledging the risk of a KiwiBuild cost blowout, Immigration Minister Iain Lees-Galloway yesterday announced the Government would create a “temporary KiwiBuild Skills Shortage” list to make it easier for construction companies to hire migrant workers. Under the new rules, construction firms would be able to go through a quicker process to get the skilled workers they need when they can’t recruit locally.

But Falloon said he was concerned the vast bulk of the building would be in the top half of the North Island, leaving Mid Canterbury without the people needed to fill jobs in farming, manufacturing, hospitality, aged care and “a myriad of other sectors”. “Government shouldn’t be picking and choosing to favour one industry or region over another,” he said. By changing immigration rules for just one industry, construction, he said, the Government are continuing to ignore demands of Mid Canterbury employers.

Woman family’s sole survivor Ani Nohinohi is in Wellington Hospital fighting for her life, unaware both her daughters and her partner are dead. Nohinohi, the sole survivor, was the front seat passenger in a car which collided head-on with another vehicle containing four elderly people at State Highway 3 north of Waverley on Wednesday. It was the worst crash on New Zealand roads in 13 years. Nohinohi’s daughter, Nivek Madams, 8, died yesterday morning. She had celebrated her eighth birthday on Tuesday, a day before the crash that killed her eightweek-old sister Shady Thompson and her mother’s partner Jeremy Thompson, 28. Nivek was given a blessing by a Waikato Hospital pastor on Wednesday night at the request of her father, Kevin, who is in prison for the murder of a gang president. A family member said a phone was put to Nivek’s ear in her hospital bed so her father and other relatives could speak to her. The eight-year-old was now with her baby sister Shady in heaven and the family was grieving the loss of their two “precious princesses”. Nohinohi continued her fight for life in Wellington Hospital’s intensive care unit yesterday as jockeys at Waverley Race Club wore black arm bands as a mark of respect to the four elderly people who were killed instantly in the other vehicle.

They were all associated with the Waverley Bowling Club and Denis Smith knew them well. “We’ll miss them terribly,” he said. “It’s a big hole in our club and words will never cover what we

feel but we’re all in shock at this stage. We’ll all miss them terribly,” he said. “The club’s only a very small club and that’s a big hole in it.” Meanwhile, Nivek succumbed to her injuries in Waikato Hospital yesterday morning, surrounded by friends and extended family. with the expense of the funerals. It says Nivek and Shady were “close sisters and part of a caring whanau, deeply loved by their friends & family. Their tragic passing has been devastating for everyone and we are grateful for the outpouring of support from the community. “As the new cluster of Matariki stars for those who have left us were announced these little lives

MAR site to continue to receive stockwater By Linda CLarKe

The Ashburton District Council will continue supplying unused stockwater to the world-leading managed aquifer recharge (MAR) project. Council has been supplying up to 500 litres of water a second to the project, which started two years ago with a pilot pond at Lagmhor. Water delivered to the pond is purposefully allowed to filter down to an underground aquifer, and is raising groundwater levels and diluting nitrate concentrations. The MAR group will report the findings of its second year soon but group chairman Peter Lowe told councillors it would show another year of outstanding results. “It is not a shouty, in-your-face project, but a quiet achiever.” The plan is to create a network of infiltration galleries across Mid Canterbury using clean and available surface water to replenish groundwater and dilute nitrate concentrations that have been rising unacceptably in some parts of the district. A second infiltration site near the Hinds River has been constructed and a catchment-wide testing programme on other potential sites is under way. Councillors approved the use of their stockwater until 2021 and the decision was unanimous. Hydrologist Bob Bower said preliminary groundwater quality results showed an expanding plume of clean water from the MAR site. Average nitrate concentrations had reduced from

14 to less than four; the goal had been 6.9. He said consecutive dry and wet periods had provided an excellent contrast for evaluating outcomes. A monitoring well 1km down gradient from the site had risen about 18m. During the two years of the project so far, a volume of water the equivalent to 1700 Olympic-sized swimming pools had been recharged. The group was excited by the results and hoping to also see benefits in springs down gradient, he said. The project is a first in New Zealand and attracting wide attention. It has consent to put 1500 litres of water a second into underground aquifers with help from the Rangitata Diversion Race company, which has authority to take water from the Rangitata River and distribute it to irrigators via schemes. The second Hinds site should also improve water levels in the Mayfield community water scheme bore. Environment Canterbury councillor David Caygill was among MAR group members supporting the request to council for continued use of the stockwater. He said results so far were consistent with the long-term aim to improve both water quality and quantity in the district. Ashburton councillor Stuart Wilson said the MAR pilot site was a success and gathering invaluable information about water. The MAR group is planning to hold a special planting day at the second site near the Hinds River.

As the Ashburton College ball approaches tonight, anticipation levels are running sky high. But few will be as excited today as Brooke Hooper, a Year 12 student who will be enjoying a top-to-toe ball package for free. Earlier this month Hooper was announced as the recipient of a Seeking Cinderella competition run by six Ashburton business owners wanting to ease the cost and stress for parents and ball-goers. Hooper will be beautified with a spray tan from Pure Bronze Tans and hairstyling and makeup courtesy of Tanglez

Studio, then receive an evening bag from Style Footwear, a flower corsage to match from Samantha Rose Florist, and have her special night captured on camera with a photoshoot from Emmily Harmer Photography. She was also offered a hire ball gown from Dress Collective, but has opted to wear one of her own. Hooper’s entry stood out because she didn’t want to put pressure on her family, said Dress Collective owner Melissa Ross. “She’s so excited. She was over the moon when we told her she had won,” Ross said. Also dishing out a range of

goodies to help students get to the ball is the Once Upon a Time project, launched last year. Five recipients will receive dresses, homemade corsages, makeup, handbags and hairdressing packages from Minx and Tanglez Hair Studio, courtesy of organisers Louise Duke and Kirsty McGlynn. They have also paid for six students’ tickets. The ball will take place at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre and is themed Paris by Light. For ball committee leaders Liv McCrea and Joe Danielson, it will be the culmination of weeks of preparation and hard work.

Students making a difference By Katie todd

An open mic night. A shared morning tea programme. A bid to make the school ball more welcoming. A Youtube channel to showcase student work. These are just some of the ideas brought from the boardroom table to the school grounds by this year’s Ashburton College executive. The fifteen-strong team have been plugging away to make Ashburton College the best and most vibrant place it can be for its 1200odd students – and successfully making a difference, Head of Senior School Claire Bubb said. After being elected into their positions last year, the Year 13 leaders have quickly seized the chance to make positive changes to all facets of the school community. Helmed by head boy Caleb Livingstone and head girl Connie Davidson, the student executive are always looking for ways to “Achieve Quality, Show Pride and Have Respect,” putting the school values into practice. This year’s specific goals were to strengthen the relationship between all year levels, raise the profile of the student executive and support all students within the school community, Livingstone said. Working alongside the heads are deputies Uatifoti Saofai and Matthew Clough, and Maggie Tarry, the representative responsible for voicing student perspective to the board of trustees. Joe Danielson and Liv McCrea have undertaken the significant task of overseeing both the ball and the graduation dinner, and said they are focusing on creating

the most welcoming environment possible. Community services committee leader William Hii maintains close relationships with Volunteering Mid & South Canterbury and Ashburton Youth Council, opening doors for the students to help out and get involved. Managing the school environment is Marika Mellish, and helping run student welfare initiatives is Kate O’Reilly. Ensuring a variety of sports events and competitions are on offer is sports committee leader Sophie Beveridge. Jack Bubb, cultural committee leader, organises events to celebrate the school’s cultural diversity while Olivia Small, ambassador committee leader, works with a number of other schools to strengthen links between Ashburton College and the community. Their collective output is impressive – particularly balanced with Level 3 NCEA demands – but also wouldn’t be possible without secretary Tessa and treasurer Lanelle Millar-McArthur. The group meet every Tuesday morning to touch base, and also manage dozens of other successful programmes like reading mentoring, peer support, subject tutoring and uniquely – restorative training. “At Ashburton College we value the fact that every student deserves a right to education,” Davidson said. She said there are many amazing people in the school community, and for them the group will be continuing to implement Ashburton College’s values to the best of their ability. Tumultuous applause ensued when a group of Netherby students concluded their school production on Wednesday. Junior students brought the dreams and discoveries of Daisy the Cow to the stage. A matinee performance was held for local preschools and Rosebank Rest Home on Tuesday, before parents and other supporters poured in for the final show on Wednesday. Assistant principal Bridget Patrick said the students worked extremely hard to bring the production to the stage, and were amazing by their first performance. This year’s production was so popular that tickets had to be added for the second show, and a few extra parents squeezed into the school hall. Gangsters’ sentences extended for bashing Five Neighbourhood Crips gangsters, including a convicted killer, will spend more time behind bars after a vicious prison yard attack. Adam Robert Gempton, 29, is serving a life sentence with a nonparole term of 10 years after stabbing Timothy Constable to death in a brawl outside a Christchurch home in 2009. He has found “brotherhood” in prison with the Neighbourhood Crips (NHC) gang, Christchurch District Court heard yesterday. In a brutal 25-second attack on January 16 this year, captured on security cameras at Christchurch Men’s Prison, Gempton and fellow gang member Resham Toa BlakeFaatafa sidled up to their victim in the exercise yard. They started attacking him when three other Crips – Joseph Regan Andy Epiha, Charles John Tawha and Riapo Piripi Tipene – jumped in with a flurry of punches. The victim was kneed as he fell to the ground and prison guards rushed in. It started after the victim, who refused medical treatment and de-

clined to lay a complaint, allegedly breached the Crips’ rules, Judge David Saunders said yesterday. A fortnight later, Gempton stabbed another inmate in the Adam’s apple with a shank comprised of a bent nail embedded in some melted plastic. His defence counsel Kerry Cook said Gempton’s NHC affiliations were behind both assaults. Yesterday, Gempton, Tawha, Tipene and Blake-Faatafa appeared from custody in shackles, offering gang signs to supporters in the public gallery. Epiha appeared via audio visual link from Otago Corrections Facility where he had been transferred. Judge David Saunders told them that violence is not to be encouraged, either in or out of prison. “Violence simply breeds violence. You will all know that from where you are today,” the judge said. Tipene, who is in prison for bashing a Christchurch bus driver, and Blake-Faatafa, jailed for a vicious meth-hazed stomping of a Christchurch pensioner, were both given an extra 16 months on their sentences.

Tawha, also sentenced for a breach of release conditions receiving a $30,000 stolen Lexus, had an additional 26 months added. Epiha, a 30-year-old with a history of violence, got an extra 14 months. Serving a life sentence, Gempton got an extra two years, six months which may affect future Parole Board applications. Judge Saunders suggested he takes a look at a carving inside the Christchurch prison’s parole room, which was created by a former “lifer” inmate. After eight years of misconducts behind bars, the long-serving prisoner and talented artist realised he needed to change his views on life and so carved the inspirational sculpture. The judge urged Gempton to take a look at the carving when he gets the chance, as it shows that people can turn their lives around. The former lifer is now making a good living for himself on the outside. The prisoners threw gang signs and shouted to supporters as they were being led back into custody. - NZME

Children watch executions A Chinese court yesterday sentenced two drug dealers to death in front of hundreds of people. The two criminals received the verdict on a sports ground in Haikou, southern China’s Hainan Province, before being put to execution immediately, the Daily Mail reported. Many of the spectators were young students who were organised to watch the public sentencing rally wearing school uniforms, according to a video released by local news outlet hinews.cn. The public sentencing event was organised by the local Qiongshan Court and the Haikou Intermediate People’s Court, and was watched by around 300 residents. It was part of the government’s campaign on the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which falls on June 26 every year. The first criminal, 39-yearold Cai Liqun, was found guilty of selling methamphetamine and magu. The latter is a mixture of methamphetamine and caffeine, and is a relatively new type of drug in China. Cai bought the drugs by post before selling them on multiple occasions between September and November in 2015, said the court. The other criminal, 36-yearold Huang Zhengye, was found guilty of transporting and selling methamphetamine. He was caught in possession of 4749.8 grams of methamphetamine and 71,100 yuan (£8143) in relation to drug dealing in September 2015, according to the court. The death sentences and the orders of the execution had been made by the Supreme People’s Court, according to Haikou Intermediate People’s

The two courts also gave first trials to 17 other drug dealers involving eight different cases during the same event. It’s not uncommon for a Chinese court to give death sentences to criminals in front of a large crowd - sometimes as many as thousands of people. The authority aims to use the form to warn the public against committing crimes, especially drug trafficking.

Verdicts and sentences for the criminals are normally made beforehand, and the judge would simply announce them to the masses. Spectators at yesterday’s event appeared to support public death sentencing. Pan Hui, a teacher from the local Yunlong Middle School, told China News that such events could help ‘educate’ and ‘frighten’ the students, and they could also make the students fearful of committing crimes. “Our school has been carrying out anti-drug educational campaigns constantly to keep the students away from drugs,’’ said teacher Pan. However, concerns have been expressed in the past towards China’s public death sentencing.

Last December, the Chinese media called a similar rally in southern Chinese city Lufeng ‘inhumane’ and ‘insulting’. A columnist, named Shen Bin, called for an immediate end on such rallies. Shen said though the local authority’s purpose was to scare the local suspects and boost sense of social security, they shouldn’t break humanity’s bottom line which was protected by the law. Shen argued that China’s Public Security Bureau issued a regulation in 1988, which prohibited courts from publicly shaming criminals. Commenting on a different rally in Shanwei city in last June, William Nee at the Amnesty International said the event was ‘tragic’ and ‘barbaric’. - PA

‘The most dangerous place for women’ A report this week ranking India as the most dangerous country in the world for women has reignited the ongoing debate over women’s safety in the vast country. On Tuesday, the Thomson Reuters Foundation – the philanthropic arm of Reuters media company – released a study that ranked India as the most dangerous place due to its high incidences of sexual violence, lack of access to justice in rape cases, child marriage, female feticide and human trafficking. India outranked such countries as Syria and Afghanistan – second and third – that are currently at war. Experts interviewed for the

poll said that India had topped the list because its government has done little to protect women since a controversial rape and murder of a young student in 2012 prompted widespread outrage and changes in the country’s rape laws. “India has shown utter disregard and disrespect for women ... rape, marital rapes, sexual assault and harassment, female infanticide has gone unabated,” said Manjunath Gangadhara, an official in the southern state of Karnataka told Thomson Reuters. The poll – based on a survey of 548 experts on women’s issues – ignited an immediate firestorm of controversy on In-

dian social media where critics blasted it as based on opinion, not facts. The report, however, noted that reported cases of crimes against women rose 83 per cent between 2007 and 2016, where there were four cases of rape every hour. In addition, India has the most child brides in the world – around a third of all girls are married before their 18th birthday – and its own government estimated earlier this year that there are 63 million “missing” women in the country due to sex-selective abortion as well as 21 million unwanted girls. 38,947 in 2016 – are on the rise, but its rate of rape per 100,000 people remains far lower than some Western countries, including the United States, which experts believe is in part due to years of fear and underreporting. The study kicked up a political debate when India’s chief opposition leader, Rahul Gandhi, was criticised for tweeting that while the prime minister “tiptoes around his garden making Yoga videos” a reference to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent fitness video – “India leads Afghanistan, Syria & Saudi Arabia in rape & violence against women. When you are looking at properties, ask the real estate agent to give you copies of the long-term maintenance plan (LTMP) and the building fund, along with copies of the body corporate meeting minutes from the past 12 months to understand the key issues and concerns. roduction of Harley-Davidson motorcycles sold in Europe will move from US factories to facilities overseas, the Milwaukeebased company announced this week, a consequence of the retaliatory tariffs the EU is imposing on American exports in an escalating trade war with the Trump administration. President Donald Trump has used the iconic American motorcycle maker as an example of a US business harmed by trade barriers in other countries, but Harley had warned that tariffs could negatively impact its sales. The company said in a regulatory filing

Monday that EU tariffs on its motorcycles exported from the US jumped between 6 per cent and 31 per cent, adding about $3200 per average motorcycle exported from the US to the EU. The impact on US workers because of Harley-Davidson’s decision was not immediately clear.

Harley-Davidson declined interview requests this week but said in prepared remarks that the company “maintains a strong commitment to US-based manufacturing which is valued by riders globally.” Harley-Davidson sold almost 40,000 motorcycles in the EU last year, its secondlargest market after the United States. The EU sales make up almost 16.4 per cent of Harley-Davidson’s worldwide sales. In the US, Harley-Davidson sold 147,972 motorcycles last year, according to company data. “Increasing international production to alleviate the EU tariff burden is not the company’s preference, but represents the only sustainable option to make its motorcycles accessible to customers in the EU and maintain a viable business in Europe,” the company said. Harley-Davidson said it will not raise its prices to avert “an immediate and lasting detrimental impact” on sales in Europe. It will instead absorb a significant amount of the cost in the near term. It anticipates the cost for the rest of the year to be approximately $30 million to $45 million. Shifting the production

overseas could take up to 18 months, the motorcycle maker said. The company is already struggling with falling sales. In January, it said it would consolidate its Kansas City, Missouri, plant into its York, Pennsylvania, facility. US motorcycle sales peaked at more than 1.1 million in 2005 but then plummeted during the recession. It wasn’t immediately known whether any other facilities would be consolidated. “Harley-Davidson’s announcement is the latest slap in the face to the loyal, highly-skilled workforce that made Harley an iconic American brand,” Robert Martinez Jr., president of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, said in a statement. The union represents Harley-Davidson workers in Milwaukee, and the Kansas City and York plants. “Will Harley use any excuse to ship jobs overseas?” Martinez added. “Does Harley even understand what ‘Made in America’ means?” “More firms will follow Harley’s lead and move production overseas,” says Mary Lovely, a Syracuse University economist who studies trade. “Can’t blame them. Many companies are being put in very difficult positions.” Lovely said Harley and other companies face retaliatory tariffs in Europe and elsewhere if they try to export products. Trump’s tariffs also raise costs on imported parts they need to manufacture in the United States.

KING OF THE MOUNTAIN

egendary Ducati racer Carlin Dunne has led the 2018 Spider Grips Ducati Pikes Peak team to victory and reclaimed the crown as King of the Mountain during this year’s annual running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Dunne completed this week’s Race to the Clouds in 9:59:102.

This is Dunne’s fourth victory at Pikes Peak. “We did it. We took the podium,” said Dunne, who notably was the first motorcyclist ever to traverse the 4720-foot course in less than 10 minutes in 2012. “The Multistrada 1260 Pikes Peak proved as amazing as we all hoped. It performed flawlessly, giving me every-

thing I needed to get up the mountain. “Pikes Peak is never an easy race, but the weather co-operated and we clinched the victory for Ducati.” This is Ducati’s seventh victory on the mountain since the company’s debut in 2008. R Pikes Peak has now set the fastest time in the history of this hill climb, which spans more than 100 years – that speaks volumes for electric mobility.” Including its battery cells, the I.D. R Pikes Peak weighs less than 1100 kilograms. When evaluating performance, Volkswagen employed simulation software to calculate exactly how to achieve the optimum in energy demand and performance for the record attempt on Pikes Peak. In the matter of aerodynamics, the

key was to compensate for the loss of downforce caused by the thin air on Pikes Peak. The result of this endeavour could be seen from afar: the flat, streamlined chassis and huge rear wing. Volkswagen also struck out in a new direction when it came to charging technology – the goal being to charge the car as quickly as possible with minimum environmental impact. The time was defined by the regulations: In case of the race being suspended, it must be possible to completely charge the car in under 20 minutes. The electricity required was provided by generators at the foot of Pikes Peak.

uto Trader, the UK’s largest digital marketplace for new and used cars, is currently organising the delivery of six brand new cars to six lucky competition winners following England’s victory against Panama in the World Cup on Monday. The cars were won through Auto Trader’s #AutoTraderGoals competition, which instructs entrants to post #AutoTraderGoals on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram as soon as England score a goal. Winners are selected at random and a brand-new car is up for grabs for every single England goal. Following England’s first group game against Tunisia on June 18, Auto Trader

gave away a brand-new Jeep Renegade to the competition’s first winner, Nick Browne, from Egham, and an Abarth 595 for the second goal in that game to Kendra Florence, from Teeside. So far the competition has received over 34,000 official competition entrants across the two England games, with England’s second group game against Panama showing a 94 per cent increase in entries. Auto Trader’s Audience and Brand Director, Lei Sorvisto, said: “Since England’s first World Cup game #AutoTraderGoals has been posted over 98,000 times on social media, which clearly demonstrates how the campaign has engaged a huge amount of people all over the UK”.

A man and his models

he people who attend Park Street Day Care are wonderfully looked after by very caring and dedicated staff members who are in turn supported by many volunteers. Those volunteers do all sorts of things like providing transport, helping with meals and providing entertainment. The entertainment is varied and interesting and last week included a visit to Park Street by June Barrett and Eric Holdgate. Eric took along seven fabulous model cars which he collected in England around 40 years ago. As they were described June took them around the room to give those present a close up view. Several people suggested the models were modelled by a good model! Built to an exacting standard and 1/24th scale the model cars are far more than toys – they are a very good depiction of the real thing and because they have been carefully stored and looked after Eric’s models are in mint condition. They have many working parts like doors and bonnets which open and close and steering wheels which work. The models represent cars from the pre-World War Two era and depict different styles of vehicles made in England, Germany or the USA. Each is a model of a high-end car manufactured by makers renowned for the quality and style of the cars they produced. All features including colours are authentic. When Rolls Royce produced their legendary Silver Ghost they did so with one thing in mind – to build the best car in the world. Subjected to tough endurance testing, the Silver Ghost was a tremendous success, and the model demonstrates why the car was sought after by those with the resources to purchase a very expensive car. Just 7874 examples of the Silver Ghost were produced. Eric’s collection includes another Rolls Royce, this one a 1929 Phantom 1, the model which followed the Silver Ghost. Researching the pedigree of the models to provide background information revealed some interesting information;

for example Rolls Royce, regarded as the epitome of Britishness, actually manufactured these models both at home and at a plant in America. Apparently the American versions were not universally popular because some buyers felt they didn’t have quite the same pedigree as the British-built cars. The collection includes a model of a third British-made car – the 1938 Alvis 4300cc sports. A convertible finished in British Racing Green this model is a reminder Alvis produced really stylish and sleek vehicles. The models of German cars are both from the same manufacturer – Mercedes Benz. Both depict cars produced by that Company in 1935, one being a 770 K Grosser and the other a K Special Roadster. The model name of the 770K is very apt – Grosser meaning big. This model of Mercedes was for various reasons including its prestige, size and built quality a car of choice for Adolf Hitler and other high ranking Nazis. Newsreel footage often depicts them cruising at speed along autobahns or using them in parades. Adolf Hitler certainly wasn’t the nicest chap ever born and it’s hard to imagine him having much of a sense of humour, but he did occasionally come out with a funny remark. One related to his habit of always riding up front with his driver often with the hood down; in parades he usually stood up. His bodyguard sat behind him. Hitler’s usual bodyguard was crosseyed, which prompted Herr Fuhrer to say if the bodyguard did ever have to start shooting he himself may have been at risk. Pity it never happened. The other Mercedes model the K Special K kompressor is a reminder of Mercedes’ sporting heritage. With this model the German manufacturer produced a very fast sports car. Kompressor indicated a supercharged motor which resulted in an already-powerful car being even gruntier.

Now we come to the two models representing American cars. Seeing the model it’s obvious The 1928 Stutz Boat-tail Speedster is a fabulous car. Soon after making their first cars in 1911 Stutz entered the Indianapolis 500 and went on to become a renowned manufacturer of luxury cars. In 1928 American car manufacturer Duesenberg introduced their J’Derham Tourer to the market. What a car. Supreme luxury on four wheels, accompanied of course with a corresponding price tag. A car which only the rich and famous, including film stars, could afford, although being introduced just before the outbreak of the great depression affected sales. Why did Eric collect his models? Quite simply he saw a newspaper advertisement – he’s not sure for which one – and thought “I like

the look of that” so he ordered it. And then a few more arrived at regular intervals. And what is his favourite? Eric likes them all, but if he had to pick a favourite it’s the model of the Mercedes 770K Grosser. Not necessarily because of the make Eric says, “it’s just something about that particular model”. Eric’s models are fabulous. They are reminders of cars from a bygone era and last week they provided the folk at Park Street with a wonderful topic of conversation.

Million dollar GTHO

e always knew that the Ford Falcon GTHO – in XW Phase II and XY Phase III configurations – was a special car. It helped well and truly put Australian motoring on the world map, after the latter emphatically became the fastest four-door in the world in 1971. Perhaps even greater was the legacy it kicked off in Australian touring car racing. The series owes much of its Holden vs Ford rivalry lineage to the GTHO homologation special, considering it played a starring role in the famed battle between Allan Moffat and Peter Brock in the early ‘70s. So when prices on classic Aussie V8s recently hit a boom period, it shocked nobody that GTHOs were at the forefront. And last weekend at Lloyds Classic Car Auction house in Kelso, New South Wales, this well presented Track Red example claimed a new record – it is now, officially, Australia’s highest-priced locally built car.

The Falcon in question used to be owned by cricketer Jeff ‘Thommo’ Thomson – one of the fastest pace bowlers in the sport’s history, and frequent test opening partner with fellow icon Dennis Lillee. Thomson was clocked as hitting 160km/h with his bowling – 65km/h short of the Phase III GTHO’s top speed.

Phase III’s original sale price of $5159.00 back in 1971. That figure not only makes this Falcon the first Aussie car to record a sale of more than a million bucks, but also seals its slot as the highest priced Aussie car to ever hit the market.

“Now we have taken it into the seven digits we expect to be inundated by Phase 3 owners and buyers,” said Lloyds Classic Car Auctions head auctioneer Bill Freeman. “Which is exciting for all classic car collectors and investors around Australia.” The big Falcon was one of several classic examples of Aussie muscle to go up for sale. Among the others to strike gold was a Holden Torana SS A9X that sold for AU$500,000. The A9X is one of the most soughtafter Holdens money can buy these days, in part thanks to its own stanza of incredible Bathurst success with Peter Brock, and also in part due to its unique hatchback styling. These sales figures will no doubt further stimulate prices of old Aussie Holdens and Fords on the second-hand Aussie car market, given they’re now a product that’s well and truly in our rear-view mirror. Considering that, expect to (sadly) see more and more of these cars go into hiding.

Beef 1.2kg Quality Mark beef bolar Spice mix 1t ground coriander 1t cumin 1t curry powder 1t sweet paprika 1/2 t dried oregano Good pinch dried red chilli flakes 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1/4 C oil Juice of 1/2 lemon Crispy roast potatoes 1.5kg floury potatoes, peeled and cut into halves 1/4 C oil 25g butter To serve Your choice of roast seasonal vegetables Gravy Yorkshire puddings

■ Beef: Combine all the spice mix ingredients together in a small bowl. Rub over the beef roast and place on a wire tray on a baking dish. Reduce the oven temperature to 200°C and place in the oven to roast for 40-45 minutes for medium-rare beef. ■ Remove beef from the oven and place on a warmed plate, cover loosely with foil and a clean tea towel and leave to rest. ■ Crispy roast potatoes: Place

potatoes in a saucepan of salted water and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and allow to simmer for 5-8 minutes, just so they are slightly soft around the edges. Drain and place saucepan back over the heat. Shake saucepan to dry off potatoes. Score the surface of each with a fork to scruff them up. ■ Place oil and butter into a roasting dish and place in oven to heat. Add potatoes, tossing well so that every surface is covered. Roast for 45 minutes at least until thoroughly golden and crisp. Sprinkle with a little salt before serving. ■ To serve: Serve slices of beef with the potatoes, peas, gravy and Yorkshire puddings if you wish. Horrific crash a warning for all A

little bit of New Zealand broke into pieces late on Wednesday morning as news came through of the horrific collision in Waverley. And as the news flowed through of the deaths that followed in the hours after the initial crash which as of last night had claimed the lives of seven people, New Zealand quietly wept. In a country of more than four million people, the loss of life of seven is quite insignificant in terms of numbers, but each of those lives claimed will individually impact on hundreds, if not thousands of people – and all of a sudden, the tragedy becomes more widespread than anyone could actually ever imagine. Accidents that measure on the

scale as much as Wednesday’s will make people sit up, but only momentarily, to take stock of things. They’ll look a little more lovingly at their loved ones, and perhaps be that little bit more cautious when on the roads. But it only ever lasts a short time. In a few days, a huge percentage of our daily road users will return to their normal habits. We’ll drive to close to the car in

front of us, approach bends with speed recommendations too fast and ignore the signs mentioning upcoming road works and then slam on the brakes when it’s far too late. Those individuals who like to come from six cars back at the passing lane – just to be one minute quicker than anyone else to their destination will again be frustrating drivers across the country and our roading police will be forced to issue tickets for the most innocuous of driving indiscretions. Every time we get into our cars, we are responsible. That, in theory, we – as humans – are allowed to be in control of tonnes worth of metal and glass and able to travel those same items at a speed of 100

kilometres per hour – is quite remarkable. The road toll in New Zealand this year sits at 194. Sadly, it won’t stay at that point for too long. And by the time we see in the New Year at the end of December, the laws of average will suggest that number will have risen by over a third and at least 300 lives will have been claimed on our roads in the 12 month period. Yes, it’s significantly less than it was 30 years ago, but it’s still too many. One life lost is too many, in fact. Getting that figure below 300 and then seeing it decrease further will depend on some serious action.

The prospect of a reduced speed limit across the country will no doubt irk more people than it will please. We are a naturally busy society and the prospect of a trip to Christchurch taking an extra 10 to 15 minutes to allow for a 20 kilometre per hour speed reduction will frustrate more than just a few. But if that’s what it takes to ensure our roads are safer, then perhaps it’s time to look at it. Speed, of course, is only one facet of things though. Driver education is minimal in this country – particularly when it comes to upskilling and ensuring that those who have a licence, deserve to still have it 10, 20 and 30 years after they were first issued.

’m not sure if it’s an age thing or maybe I’m just catching up. I clearly remember watching the FA Cup in 1985 with the mighty Manchester United taking on Everton with a group of friends. It was a thriller with a sending off and a late winner by Norman Whiteside. The moment I remember most clearly from the game was my mate Cam Bruce turning to me when Whiteside scored and saying “Your team just scored, show some emotion man, you never show any emotion”. I think it’s a trait I inherited from the old man, I remember him waking me up in the early hours of the morning to watch the FA Cup final when I was a wee fella. We would have an apple (not sure why I remember that) and quietly watch the match together. The whole lack of emotions thing has certainly all changed now! Now, silly things like TV ads can make me well up. I can’t believe I’m about to let this cat out of the bag, but I very nearly ‘shed a couple’ when David Seymour got eliminated from Dancing with the Stars. Yes, I just admitted to watching it! To top that wee gem off, I would also like to own up to voting for him on more than one occasion. I all of a sudden feel like I’m taking my turn to talk at a group therapy session! “I haven’t voted for David for two weeks now”.

LETTERS Even tough guy Russian president Vladimir Putin can get emotional – although in this instance he blamed the wind for the moisture around his eyes. He cracked me up! He was so unco and awkward on the dance floor that I couldn’t stop grinning through his routine. It was so bad it was good. If the show was a Disney cartoon he would have definitely been Goofy, “huck huck”. He is not as goofy as he looked on the D floor and had some great one-liners, he’s not a silly man, eh. What got me going, was when they were talking to Seymour after he got ousted and he talked about how much effort he put in each week and how talented and PATIENT his dancing partner was! What the hell is that about? Emotional gulping over a dancing competition on the telly!

Is this the start of me completely losing the plot or am I metamorphosing into a Kardashian? It’s not so much the sad things that get me the most, it’s those good outcome moments that really set me off. Like when the sports challenged kid scores the winning goal. I dare not watch Bad News Bears again. Even TV ads, like Spark’s Father’s Day commercial when the wee fella makes his Mum a Father’s Day card and breakfast in bed. Gets me every time. I’m just lucky I have a supportive wife who says it’s kinda cute, although I’m pretty sure she thinks I’m just a soft you know what! I know I’m not alone, there

is at least one other emotional bloke in town that I know of. As you know, I’m not one to name names, but I think the owner of a restaurant bar that has recently changed its name in support of overweight quackers, could even be worse than me. World travel’s changing face By Grant Bradley Flight Centre says small shifts in travel preferences could end up being “seismic’’ for the industry and travellers. Technological advances, political and social upheaval, climate change and changing tastes and preferences are shaping the path for the industry, which is facing major disruption. The 45-year-old company yesterday released a report, Tides of Change, prepared to help it ride out the next wave of change. “While some changes or cultural shifts might seem insignificant at first, they might also bring seismic shifts within our industry,’’ said Flight Centre NZ managing director David Coombes. “This change is for the better, and holds opportunity for all in the industry if we ride the cultural currents correctly.” The report by data analytics company TRA touches on key themes: This is the shift to an experience-orientated culture where

people seek more meaningful ways to live life. This will mean more travel for festivals, events and novel and stimulating experiences. Festivals such as Burning Man in the United States, Rainbow Serpent in Australia and Kiwi Burn in this country are becoming more popular. Sean Berenson, Flight Centre’s general manager product said be it an airline, cruise line, tour company or tourism board, those that prioritise the quality of experience will thrive in 2019 and beyond. “Our customers are seeking more; they want to be travellers rather than tourists.’’

The Inland Revenue Department is offering leniency to customers who have not managed to file their GST returns on time. There have been widespread problems for IRD’s online service myIR and filing GST returns. Yesterday, Commissioner of Inland Revenue Naomi Ferguson apologised for the issues which have made it difficult for customers to file their returns. She also said that the IRD would not apply late payment penalities for any GST returns due on June 28, provided they are filed and payments made by July 4. - NZME

Sustainability highlight Listed dairy producer Synlait Milk has marked its 10th year in business with a trailblazing sustainability programme for the next decade featuring some of the boldest impact reduction ambitions ever announced in the industry. A long list of commitments were unveiled at Synlait’s annual conference in Christchurch, headed by the pledge to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 35 per cent per kilogram of milksolids on-farm and 50 per cent off-farm by 2028. The report says people increasingly expect honesty and clarity from the organisations they deal with, both in the organisation’s ethos and operations and how they deal with personal information. Travellers trust providers with highly sensitive data – passports, credit cards, home addresses and contact information. New European rules on data regulation had meant some firms had to re-learn how to handle clients’ information, said Andy Jack, the head of the agent’s cor-

porate travel arm, FCM. “There are potentially multiple data security implications for the 190 million business trips that take place annually.’’ As travellers become more reliant on technology, seamless experiences become an expectation rather than a preference. Trump ramps up global tension

lobal markets have been on a roller-coaster ride in recent weeks as investors remain concerned that trade tensions between the US and its major trading partners, such as China and the European Union, could develop into a big drag on the global economy. There are increasing concerns surrounding US President Donald Trump’s tariff threats as he targets $200 billion worth of Chinese products, as well as sending mixed signals on foreign investment in the US tech sector. US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin tweeted that news of the Trump administration planning to curb Chinese investment in US tech shares was ‘fake news’ but also said that restrictions will apply to ‘all countries that are trying to steal our technology.’ Trump has also raised the possibility of a 20 per cent tariff on European cars. Considering the mixed cues from global markets, the NZX 50 has held up relatively well. The local bourse has been trading near all-time highs this week, after reaching a record high of 9008 earlier this month. The benchmark index currently around 8 per cent higher this quarter, with Synlait Milk, Tourism Holdings and Fisher & Paykel Healthcare all reaching record highs during the week. Data from the ANZ business confidence survey has fallen for a fourth consecutive month, plunging to a seven-month low in June, as costs, credit and capacity weigh on firms. 39 per cent of the 341 firms surveyed expect general

business conditions to deteriorate this year. Business confidence has been falling since June last year as economic headwinds have strengthened. Retailers remain the most pessimistic, while manufacturers are the most upbeat. Employment intentions have fallen from +7 per cent to +1 per cent with the most negative sectors being construction and agriculture. The lack of skilled employment was the most prevalent problem, followed by regulation, competition and low turnover. The RBNZ kept the official cash rate unchanged at 1.75 per cent yesterday, which was in line with market expectations. However, Reserve Bank Governor, Adrian Orr, signalled that he is prepared to cut if needed, as economic growth slows and inflation remains below target. He also commented the Bank is well positioned to manage change in either direction – up or down. New Zealand’s foreign trade surplus increased notably in May, compared to the same time last year, as exports grew faster than imports. The trade surplus rose to $294m in May, from $62m the previous year.

Exports surged 10.4 per cent from the prior year, while imports climbed 5.7 per cent. It was a strong month for meat exports, with both lamb and beef increasing in quantities. In corporate news, Kathmandu surged 20 per cent this week, after substantially upgrading its FY18 profit forecast following strong support for its autumn and winter promotions. The outdoor clothing retailer lifted full-year earnings guidance after tax to $48 – $52 million for the year ending July. Current sales for the year-todate are up 7.7 per cent from that of last year. Under CEO Xavier Simonet, the clothing retailer has been discounting less, selling more product at full price and achieving a higher average selling price. Kathmandu will release its fullyear earnings on September 18. Synlait closed at a record high after announcing Leon Clement will join the organisation as Chief Executive Officer from midAugust. Prior to this, Clement was formerly Fonterra Co-operative Group’s Managing Director of Fonterra Brands NZ. Trade Me CEO, Jon Macdonald, announced he intends to step down from the company in around six months’ time. He has been with the company for 15 years, including 10 years as CEO. Tim Butt’s stable star drew perfectly in gate one to give driver Anthony Butt all the options at Menangle on Sunday. As far as a contest goes, having Australia’s top-rated pacer Soho Tribeca right next door in gate two makes the race even more intriguing. Gun draws to the two big guns makes it very hard for the likes of Majordan (10), Franco Nelson (11), Match In Heaven (nine), Cruz Bromac (seven), Gotta Go Ya Hu (six) and Mach Doro (three). But the Len Smith is only part of the stellar Menangle meeting Sunday. Here’s a snapshot of the rest of the Menangle card, plus the cracking meetings in Victoria at Melton on Friday and Kilmore Saturday night. The buzz around Tassie threeyear-old Ignatius in the NSW Breeders Challenge 3YO Colts/ Geldings Final is so big, he will command almost as much attention as the Len Smith itself. It’s hard to imagine a horse being more impressive winning his heat for any race than Ignatius was at Penrith in this series – and he toyed with Picard, who is again his main rival in this final. Ignatius cruised around to win his semi, has gate three for the final (Picard is out in 10) and should cruise in to yet another win. Aussie trip beckons A bold performance in tomorrow’s Te Whangai Romneys Hawke’s Bay Hurdle (3100m) could see star jumper Monarch Chimes book a return trip to Australia this winter. The Emma-lee and David Brownetrained Monarch Chimes has already campaigned in Victoria this year, winning at Pakenham before finishing third in last month’s Brierly Steeplechase at Warrnambool and fourth in the Grand Annual Steeplechase (5500m) at the same track two days later. - NZME

Kelvin Tyler’s main worry this week with The Energizer was securing a jockey for the sevenyear-old at Wingatui today. The Riverton trainer didn’t expect any issues in that area, given the jumper’s form credentials for The Virginia Hutchinson Memorial (2750m). “I texted and rang a few riders, but couldn’t get anyone – I thought they would have been jumping out of trees to get on him,” Tyler said. However, an approach from the Wanganui-based Hana Bognuda settled the issue. “She was the only one that rang me up for the ride,” Tyler said. Bognuda is now in prime position to post her first winner as The Energizer is at the top of his game and is expected to prove a handful for his rivals. The son of Shinko King, who

is being aimed at next month’s Hospitality New Zealand Canterbury Grand National Hurdles (4200m), won over fences at Wingatui two runs back before finishing runner-up at Timaru. “He’s going really well and I expect him to go close, he’d probably have to fall over to get beaten but it’s a hurdle race and anything can happen,” Tyler said. “He is a safe jumper though and he’s done everything right. “He’s an ideal hurdler.” Tyler has yet to confirm plans for The Energizer after Wingatui and a trip north to Trentham for the Wellington Hurdles (3400m) hasn’t been completely ruled out. “He’ll either go to Timaru or Wellington, probably Timaru is more likely because I don’t want to bottom him out before the National,” he said. - NZME

Rugby players getting lippy with Mid Canterbury referees will now have their comments heard by a wider audience. New radio communications gear being worn by referees is so sensitive that players speaking to the referee will be clearly heard by assistant referees on the sideline, and by a senior referee coach. The Community Trust of Mid and South Canterbury gave $6000 to the rugby referees to buy three new sets of communications gear and referees’ manager

Graham Shaw said the new technology was a boost for referees. The referees now have four hitech sets and three older sets that will be used in grades other than senior. The on-field referee and the sideline assistants wear vests with pockets for the radio gear. The on-field referee has an open microphone and can be heard by the sideline referees; the assistants press a button on their gear to talk to the referee. Shaw said a referee coach was also able to hear the entire conversation, which could be used as a teaching tool after the game.

The new radios were so clear, it was like talking on a telephone, he said. And they could pick up player comments from a greater distance. The old sets were not so clear and had a small time delay. Shaw said players who verbally abused a referee, showed dissent or possibly said something funny would now be easily heard by not only the referee. Dissent is still an issue on Mid Canterbury rugby fields, with four red cards issued recently for players persisting in talking back. Clubs have been warned by let-

ter that player dissent will not be tolerated. Players are sent from the field for a red card and then serve a two-week stand-down. Players could also be cited for dissent and face a disciplinary panel, which could call on evidence of the referee team. Shaw said that Mid Canterbury Rugby wanted to keep its existing stock of experienced referees as well as develop new referees, and technology like the new communications gear was important in them being able to officiate and enjoy the game as well.

The veteran All Blacks flanker will play a milestone match against the Queensland Reds tonight, his last at the Eden Park venue where he honed his brutal craft. The 35-year-old, who joins Toulouse in August, will make a 137th appearance for the Blues, equalling the figure of Tony Woodcock. Only New Zealand test great Keven Mealamu has played more (164). The beleaguered Blues are out

Brache eyes World Cup Utility back Marcel Brache is on track to play in next year’s rugby World Cup in Japan – and he has the Western Force to thank for it. Brache has now notched 10 international caps for the USA, including the shock 30-29 win over Scotland earlier this month. That victory was America’s first over a tier-one rugby nation, boosting the country’s hopes of causing some similar boilovers at the World Cup. Brache has flourished since arriving at the Force at the end of 2013. Hard work brings rewards for umpires Three Mid Canterbury netball officials have made another big step up in their chosen roles. under-15 tournament. She was assessed and proved her umpiring was up to a zone standard, meaning she was now eligible to progress through to national qualifications. Rule and Adlam’s badges showed that they had both proven themselves to be efficient,

competent and experienced at a centre premier level in all areas of the bench. They were also now eligible to progress through to national qualifications. Mid Canterbury Netball’s Aimee Cosgrove said both awards were tough to obtain and all

It’s schadenfreude The football world is having its fun at Germany’s expense and no one is laughing louder than Sweden. Germany’s shock 2-0 loss to South Korea yesterday saw the defending World Cup champions eliminated in the group stage of the tournament for the first time since 1938. A 1-0 defeat to Mexico in its opening game in Russia set the tone for Joachim Low’s men, who finished bottom of Group F with three points from three games. The reigning champions’ only win was a thrilling 2-1 victory over Sweden in its second game, courtesy of a stunning Toni Kroos strike from a set piece in the 95th minute. But what happened afterwards was just as big a talking point as Kroos’ pearler into the top corner. Germany’s coaching staff stormed the touchline in elation over the shock win – and Sweden coach Janne Andersson wasn’t impressed one bit. The dejected 55-year-old took

a swipe at coach Low for bad sportsmanship. “Some of the German coaches celebrated by running in our direction, rubbing it into our faces by making gestures, and that really got me annoyed and angry,” he said. “There were many people on our bench who were very annoyed. “We fought it out for 95 minutes and when the final whistle goes you (should) shake hands and leave, so I was very angry with that.” Swedish star Emil Forsberg told news channel TV4: “There is lack of respect and disgusting behaviour. “You do not run into our area and celebrate that way.” That “disgusting behaviour” has come back to haunt the Germans. Its elation has turned to despair and in an ironic twist, Sweden is the one celebrating with the most gusto after they thrashed Mexico 3-0 yesterday to top the group.

Joachim Low Perhaps Low was reflecting on those over-the-top antics against Sweden when he skewered his side’s “arrogance” in Russia. “We have turned up with a sense of arrogance,” Low said. “We thought we could just turn a switch after the bad friendlies. “This is something for us to reckon with. “This is historic. I am sure this will create some public uproar in Germany.”

Big win for AshColl Five Ashburton College players notched up double points when the senior boys’ basketball team beat Riccarton High School 89-59 in their secondary school Thomson Trophy game this week. Coach Brian Kerr said a tough battle had been expected but college took a healthy lead into half-time and kept the pressure on. Quinn Ritchie (15 points) and Marc Juntilla (13) led the points scoring with solid support from Abel Wilson (12), Fotu Hala (12) and Harry Jackson (10). Kerr said Jackson had a standout game, also dominating the defensive boards. Riccarton, at home, initially started the better but it wasn’t long before college settled themselves and then set about their work. They began with a full court zone press which quickly began to reap reward as they caused the Riccarton guards lots of problems advancing the ball. This in turn led to turnovers which allowed the AshColl to initiate their fast break, which gave them an early lead. An early time out by Riccarton allowed them to nullify the college press, however they were still subjected to a high intensity zone defence which continued to stifle their attack. AshColl, on the other hand, found gaps in Riccarton’s defence and punished the home team on their turnovers. The defensive intensity was continued

on by the college bench players who gave Riccarton no respite. AshColl took a healthy lead at halftime and were in control. This time there were no lapses in the third quarter as there were the previous week and the college’s 3-2 zone defence really put the screws on the Riccarton offence. “The pleasing aspect from a coach’s perspective was that the whole bench got good minutes on court and were able to contribute at both ends. “They maintained the defensive intensity for the most which has been a key in getting good results. “There was also more inside play as they exploited gaps in the Riccarton defence which was encouraging as it added another level to their offensive play. “We also tried a couple of variations on our game plan which were relatively successful. “Still some things to improve upon but overall a good result.” Tuesday’s win has AshColl second equal on the division two points table, behind Papanui. They play Ellesmere College, at Ellesmere, this Tuesday. The senior girls play St Andrew’s College in Christchurch in their next Whelan Trophy encounter. Mid Canterbury United were just one win away from taking out the Mainland Football men’s division two title, and hoping that win might come on home soil tomorrow. But they’ve ended up getting the points they needed to secure themselves the title without a ball even being kicked, after their scheduled opposition for tomorrow – Western AFC – having defaulted.

It’s been a season to remember for the Mid Canterbury United men. Heading into the latest round they were 10 wins from 10 outings and have scored a whopping 48 goals and conceded just eight. Their latest win on Saturday was a 5-0 demolition of Parklands United after a two-week break due to sodden grounds around Canterbury, meaning Mainland Football’s competitions had to be called off. Fitzgerald set his side a task of

taking the game to Parklands, and they did. They opened the scoring after just 15 minutes through Luke Martin, who added a second just five minutes later from a tight angle, and his hat-trick goal came at the 38-minute mark. With Parklands electing to play long it made it reasonably easy for Mid Canterbury United’s defence, with man of the match going to John Moses at centre back. Canterbury United’s dominance when it came to possession of the football. Niall Young made great inroads at left half and scored in the 41st minute, with Luciano Drudi also scoring in the 43rd minute to see Mid Canterbury head to half-time up 5-0. Fitzgerald praised his squad for a great first half but asked them for more structured passing in the second half, and for them to work more as a team on attacking play.

But just six minutes into the second half a Parklands striker went down with a broken ankle and could not be moved from the pitch, which all but concluded the match with the score still at 5-0. That win put Mid Canterbury United on 33 points with three games to play, with the closest team to them having just 18 points to their names. That meant even if Mid Canterbury lost their last three games of the season, no one could beat them, Fitzgerald said.
