Critically endangered birds that nest along the Ashburton River are making it unswimmable for people. The river has long been rated as polluted, but ongoing testing for the source of the E.coli contamination points to precious birds like the black-billed gulls who feed, wade and poo in it. The river has been a waterway of
concern for the Ashburton Water Zone Committee, who commissioned investigation after investigation as the finger was pointed at farmers for polluting practices. But the birds are to blame. Principal surface water scientist Adrian Meredith said there was no longer any point in further investigations as work over the past 20 years provided strong evidence that high E.coli levels in
the river came from an avian source. Prior to the past week’s wet weather, some 8000 endangered black-billed gulls were nesting in the river about 1.5km upstream of the State Highway 1 bridge. Thousands of black-backed gulls are also known to frequent the area.

Toot fills foodbank shelves By SuSan SandyS

Toot for Tucker on Monday night has replenished dwindling Mid Canterbury foodbank supplies. Increasing costs including fuel and housing prices has put the squeeze on many Mid Cantabrians, and growing numbers are calling on foodbanks. Salvation Army chaplain Judith Lilley said volunteers at the community foodbank always looked forward to the items which came from the annual Toot for Tucker. Demand on the foodbank had grown 10 to 15 per cent in the last year alone. “Our shelves get really bare with Christmas coming up and into the New Year, it’s just the boost we need,” Lilley said. And while inclement weather post-
poned the initial event by one week, and drizzle set in as it was under way on Monday night, support was high. “The rain didn’t dampen the community spirit,” Lilley said. Maureen Thomas, a volunteer at Ashburton St Vincent de Paul, said demand had grown at the organisation’s foodbank by about 10 per cent in the last year. It was not only beneficiaries and lower income workers requiring help, but also some middle income families, due to the high cost of rents, power and fuel. The organisation gave out up to12 food parcels each week, so was very grateful for the replenishment of supplies from Toot for Tucker. Ashburton County Lions runs the event annually, and has seen it grow since introducing it in 2001.
President Nicola Kelly said it had been heart-warming to see many youngsters from groups such as cadets, brownies and rangers join the huge number of volunteers who drove street to street, tooting along the way, and collecting supplies. “It was great to see the children running out with their bags, they really got into it,” Kelly said. This year had been the first time ever the event had had to be postponed. The postponement may have dropped response a little, as the number of boxes collected was slightly down on last year. Nevertheless, the tally was impressive, with more than 300 boxes filled with collected supplies. “It’s just amazing really, we thank the public immensely for their generosity,” Kelly said.
From P1 Water sampled at SH1 in summer and autumn reflected their presence through faecal source tracking technology, Meredith said. The E. coli readings did not correlate to river flow variations. It was likely the contamination pattern had been occurring in the river for a long time but only became an issue when regular water quality sampling began, he said. Environment Canterbury will continue to sample the water as part of its regular monitoring programme but the water zone committee said investigations into the source could stop. Meredith said because the riverbed birds polluting the river were highly valued and endangered, controlling the source was not an option. Swimmers needed to be redirected. While the birds were generating more than 50 per cent of E. coli in the river, it was still important to reduce other known sources, like livestock, he said. Meredith said SH1 was a convenient spot for swimmers, but the committee could consider enhancing a swimming hole in the river that was less affected by the birds. Committee member Angela Cushnie said the river’s poor water quality rating had been used to discredit rural people. Stuart Wilson agreed. “It is a pity we can’t publicise nationally it is unsafe to swim at State Highway One because of endangered bird species. It (the river) always gets a red cross because it is highly contaminated. It is not giving everyone outside the district a fair image.” Meredith said a safe swimming spot might be found on the north branch as it was less contaminated. Endangered birds nesting in the riverbed near Lake Hood are also to receive a helping hand with their survival. A gate and signage is to be erected on an access road to the riverbed to keep vehicles out and stop them running over nests in and along the riverbed. It is an offence under the Wildlife Act to disturb endangered, nesting birds and punishable by a maximum $20,000 fine.

Don’t leave pets in cars over summer – AA Roadservice By Jaime Pitt-macKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
People are being urged to be more aware when it comes to leaving their pets in cars over the summer months, by not leaving them in there at all. The AA Roadservice has received more than 4000 call-outs nationwide for animals locked in vehicles since 2012, at an average of 52 call-outs a month. Mid Canterbury has made up only 10 of those call-outs according to the NZAA’s data. By October 31, officers have already responded to 530 call-outs for locked animals, with two of those being in Mid Canterbury. Local AA contractor Dave Stevens said the two most important things for people to remember is to call straight away, and to remember that the call-out is free whether you are an AA member or not. “The biggest thing we get with lock-ins is that people have faffed about for 20 minutes trying to fix the problem for themselves, and then they have to wait the added time for us to get there,” he said. “Your first thing to do should be to call (0800 500 222, or *222 from mobile phones).”
Stevens said the best option if the response time is going to be too long on a hot day is to break either the driver side or passenger side door window to get the car open as they are the easiest windows to replace. People can now be fined $300 if a dog is left in a vehicle and it becomes heat stressed under the animal welfare regulations, and if a complaint warrants further enforcement action, people could also face prosecution. The New Zealand Companion Animal Council has a simple message for dog owners. “If the purpose of your trip is not to take your dog somewhere, please leave your dog at home,” said acting operations manager Bianka Atlas. On a 30 degree day, the temperature inside a vehicle can reach 39 degrees in five minutes and in 30 minutes, it will be 49 degrees, and this can occur even if a vehicle is parked in the shade with the windows down. Signs that indicate a dog is heat stressed include: shade seeking behaviour, excessive panting, excessive drooling and hyperventilation. Anyone who sees a dog suffering in a hot car is urged to call the police, SPCA or AA immediately.
He might be man’s best friend, so treat him as such. Never leave your pet to cook in a closed car.

Much thought put into pool closure of alternate venues were determining factors in the council’s decision to temporarily close the pools in January for routine maintenance. They will close from January 7 to 20, while grouting and sealant replacement is carried out on three of the four pools and maintenance work is completed in the facility’s changing rooms. This two-week period has proven to be one of the centre’s quietest times, with many people away on holiday, and usual
Ashburton District Council managers have put a great deal of thought into the timing of EA Networks Centre pool maintenance this summer. Chief executive Hamish Riach said the aim was to cause the least disruption to the community as possible. “We greatly value our visitors and have made every effort to ensure that disruption in service is kept to a minimum,” Riach said. Traditionally low visitation numbers and the availability
swimming programmes not happening. Council service delivery group manager Neil McCann acknowledged concerns about why this particular timeframe was chosen, and wanted to reassure residents that it was carefully selected to be of least disruption. “While it might seem contradictory, the height of summer and the school holidays does not appear to attract more visitors, or even sustain the same number we usually see at other times of
the year,” he said. The council had also selected a time when other facilities, such as the Tinwald pool, community pools and the Ashburton Domain paddling pool would all be open. Had this work been scheduled for the winter months, swimmers would have no alternative options, and a number of swimming programmes would have to be cancelled, he said. And the Tinwald pool would open for additional hours during the closure.
All pools need to be maintained throughout their lifespan to keep them running at their best. While other facilities could do this in the off-season, EA Networks Centre was open all-year round, so a suitable time had to be chosen. Pool members would not be charged fees or would receive credits. The main pool would remain open but be available for swim squad training only, as changing rooms would also be closed for maintenance.

In brief Footloose and carefree The Kiwi comedian behind the How to Dad social media craze has thrown his support behind a woman angry at being kicked out of Sylvia Park shopping centre for being barefoot, agreeing that walking footloose is part of our culture. The ranks of the Ashburton Justices of the Peace grew by one yesterday when Methven farmer Rob Withers was sworn into the office at a special sitting of the Ashburton District Court. Withers, who was warmly welcomed as a JP by Judge Joanna Maze, will be available for the people of his rural community to witness documents, take declarations and swear affidavits. Some JPs also train to under-
take judicial duties in the district court system, like hearing minor offences and traffic cases. Judge Maze said JPs played an important part in the judicial system and she pulled rank to be the first to congratulate Withers on his new office. “You are a necessary part of the system and we tend to forget how much work JPs do, hard-working JPs committed to the communities they serve.” Ashburton JPs president Ian Moore presented Withers with
a badge of membership after he swore an oath of allegiance and office before Judge Maze to uphold the law. Withers and his wife Jane, and their three children, have lived on a dairy and beef farm at Springburn for the past 18 years. He went to Springburn Primary School and Christ’s College, before completing a Diploma in Agriculture and Farm Management at Lincoln. He travelled and worked overseas for four years on a sheep
farm in the south of England before returning to the home farm at Springburn. The farm now includes support blocks at Staveley and Alford Forest. Withers has been involved in Methven tennis, soccer and rugby and was president of the Methven A&P Association from 2012-13. He is president of the Staveley Hall Society. He said he saw becoming a Justice of the Peace as a way to help and serve in his community.
Mid Canterbury patient suffers lead poisoning BY SUSAN SANDYS

Mid Canterbury has recorded a case of lead absorption, leading to warnings about exposure to the toxic substance. The Canterbury District Health Board is not disclosing any information about the case, reported in its notifiable diseases for the district in the week ending November 16, in order
to protect the patient’s identity. “However, most notified cases of lead exposure are related to occupation, for example, radiator repairers, contractors removing old lead-based paint,” a media spokesperson said. And the most common nonoccupational exposure was from sanding or removing old lead-based paint. The Ministry of Health warns
that untreated lead poisoning in both adults and children can cause brain damage and even be fatal. Preschoolers are particularly at risk as they may swallow paint chips and contaminated soil while playing outdoors. Contaminated soil can be brought indoors by animals or on people’s clothes and shoes. Many adults and children
with lead poisoning may have no symptoms, or vague or nonspecific symptoms such as stomach pains, difficulty sleeping, constipation and loss of appetite. Pets often show symptoms before people, and those with unwell pets diagnosed by vets to have lead poisoning, are advised to have a doctor check all members of their household.
Trials will begin next year to turn central Auckland into a car-free zone. The Auckland Council voted unanimously yesterday to adopt a strategy called Access for Everyone, which calls for all non-essential vehicles to be kept out of the inner city. As part of the strategy, the council instructed officials to come up with a plan for trials. Mayor Phil Goff says trials will start next year, based on a plan to be presented in March. - NZME
Sinkhole traps truck A Waste Management rubbish truck was swallowed by a sinkhole in Christchurch after a burst water main flooded the road yesterday. Resident Matthew Terrance Ryley, who was there during the comical incident told the Herald: “It’s the third time [the water main] had blown but this is the first time someone has dumped a truck in a hole. I heard this sort of thud and a whole lot of revving of an engine. I went outside and the truck was in the hole with its ass in the air.” - NZME

It will hopefully be a case of third time lucky for black-billed gulls desperately trying to breed on the Ashburton River this season. Heavy rain and rising river levels have worked against their efforts, but they are not giving up and may still successfully raise their young. About 8000 of the critically endangered birds were building nests and sitting on eggs about one kilometre upstream
of the State Highway One bridge about two weeks ago, but shifted downstream when floods came through. About half of them settled around the bridge, and started over, beginning to build new nests. But once again floods came through. About 2000 remained at the State Highway One site on Monday, huddled on diminishing shingle islands and restless, squawking and flying over the highway bridge.
Remaining gulls not at the site are likely to be biding their time in surrounding farm paddocks. Forest and Bird Ashburton chairwoman Edith Smith said those birds, as well as the 2000 or so remaining at the bridge, would most likely try one more time to breed, once waters subsided. “They will generally have a go nesting three times over the season,” Smith said. Mating behaviour was continuing among the bridge colony, showing the birds are deter-
mined to create a new generation despite nature being against them. “Floods are just one of the pitfalls, they have evolved this way,” Smith said. Gulls flying over the bridge have created a spectacle, but also presented the occasional risk of them being hit by trucks. Smith said the central location of the bridge site meant many Mid Cantabrians could enjoy seeing the gulls achieve their breeding successes, giving a view
almost as good as a nature documentary. “We are pretty lucky to have these critically endangered birds and all the dramas, it’s like a TV show,” she said. The Ashburton River was a highly significant breeding site for the birds, which are the world’s rarest gull. Meanwhile, a colony of about 5000 at the Ashburton River mouth is raising young and doing well, with floodwaters not having a big impact on the area.

on holiday.” A statement released by police described the scene met by officers as “horrific.” Last Friday morning, police were called to a property in the village of Leulumoega – about 6km from Faleolo International Airport – where they discovered the bodies of two men “badly slayed,” police said.
It is understood the men’s injuries were extremely severe – with relatives of both men describing, on social media, that what they went through was “torture”. The pair, later identified as the 69-year-old Samoan-Kiwi and a 42-year-old local man, were found near an outside kitchen. - NZME

Fight on to sell Brexit deal Prime Minister Theresa May made a blunt appeal to sceptical lawmakers yesterday to back her divorce deal with the European Union: It isn’t perfect, but it’s all there is, and the alternative is a leap into the unknown. In essence, she urged Parliament: Let’s agree and move on, for the sake of the voters. Britain and the 27 other EU leaders signed off on a Brexit deal after more than a year and a half of tough negotiations. It was a day many doubted would ever come, but May was anything but triumphant as she reported back to Parliament, which now controls the fate of the deal. May confirmed that British lawmakers will vote on December 11, after several days of debate, on whether to approve or reject the agreement. Scores of legislators – from both the opposition and May’s governing Conservative Party – have vowed to oppose it. Rejection would plunge Britain into a political crisis and potential financial turmoil just weeks before it is due to leave the EU on March 29. “No one knows what would happen if this deal didn’t pass,” May told the House of

Sleepy pilot overshoots his destination by 50km A small plane overshot its destination in Australia by almost 50km after its pilot fell asleep in the cockpit, air safety officials say. The pilot was the only person on board the freight flight from Devonport to King Island in Tasmania on November 8. The incident, classified as a case of “incapacitation”, is being investigated by the Austral-
ian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB). Officials have not said how the pilot awoke before landing the plane safely. The Piper PA-31 aircraft, operated by Vortex Air, had been due to complete the 240km trip at 07.15 local time. “During the cruise, the pilot fell asleep, resulting in the aircraft overflying King Island by
46 kilometres,” the ATSB said in a brief statement. Aviation expert Neil Hansford said that Australia had strict rules relating to pilot fatigue. “There is no way in the world that someone should’ve taken on that flight fatigued,” he told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. On its website, Vortex Air
says it runs charter flights for “groups, corporates and leisure travellers” around Australia. ‘Flawless’: NASA craft lands on Mars A NASA spacecraft designed to drill down into Mars’ interior landed on the planet yesterday after a perilous, supersonic plunge through its red skies, setting off jubilation among scientists who had waited in white-knuckle suspense for confirmation to arrive across 100 million miles of space. Flight controllers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, leaped out of their chairs, screaming, dancing and hugging, upon learning that InSight had arrived on Mars, the graveyard for a multitude of previous missions. “Touchdown confirmed!” a flight controller called out just before 3pm EST, instantly
dispelling the anxiety that had gripped the control room as the spacecraft made its sixminute descent. Because of the distance between Earth and Mars, it took eight minutes for confirmation to arrive, relayed by a pair of tiny satellites that had been trailing InSight throughout the six-month, 482-million-kilometre journey. The two satellites not only transmitted the good news in almost real time, they also sent back InSight’s first snapshot of Mars just 4½ minutes after landing. The picture was speckled with dirt because the dust cover was still on the lander’s camera, but the terrain around
the spacecraft looked smooth and sandy with just one sizable rock visible – pretty much what scientists had hoped for. Better photos are expected in the days ahead, after the dust covers come off. It was NASA’s – indeed, humanity’s – eighth successful landing at Mars since the 1976 Viking probes, and the first in six years. NASA’s Curiosity rover, which arrived in 2012, is still on the move on Mars. “Flawless,” declared JPL’s chief engineer, Rob Manning. “This is what we really hoped and imagined in our mind’s eye,” he added. “Sometimes things work out in your favour.” NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine, presiding over his
first Mars landing as the space agency’s boss, said: “What an amazing day for our country.” InSight, a $1 billion international project, includes a German mechanical mole that will burrow down 5 metres to measure Mars’ internal heat. The lander also has a French seismometer for measuring quakes, if they exist on our smaller, geologically calmer neighbour. Another experiment will calculate Mars’ wobble to reveal the makeup of the planet’s core. Seven hours after touchdown, NASA reported that InSight’s vital solar panels were open and recharging its batteries. - AP

Birds, not rural folk, to blame
Y
esterday’s Ashburton Water Zone committee meeting provided a small win for the rural community of this district. It’s been long known that it is highly advisable to steer clear of swimming in certain parts of the Ashburton river but the common misconception, largely through lack of information about it being anything else, has led to the finger being pointed at pollution caused by the rural sector of the Mid Canterbury community. But the statistics and the data are in and it would appear that something we’ve been fighting to keep strong and plentiful is the main reason behind why it is
deemed unsafe to wile away the summer months in our own river. This isn’t a black mark against the birds that call the shores of our river home either – but finally an understanding of what and who is responsible for the high levels of E. coli found in our waters. Despite the advancements of time, there is – at least
it would appear – still a strong urban against rural divide in our quarters. Largely because there is often nothing else to point the finger at. Our rural sector cops a lot at times, most of it unjustified and most of it because they are, like everyone else, just trying to make a living in the best way possible. Findings and announcements like that of yesterday will go a long way to trying to ease that gap between the two groups as more learnings and data is uncovered. We are blessed in the Mid Canterbury region to have some wonderful swimming destinations for the summer months – and any
other season for the more hardy – and it would be wonderful to think that one day we might be able to get back to the glory days which have passed. As a kid growing up we would spend hours jumping off the bridge in the RDR or down at the river looking for a good water hole and that is a tradition which has spawned from our forefathers. Many generations have swum frequently in our waters over decades – most of whom without any sign of any form of contamination or illness. But the myriad of information made available now as technology improves and water
testing is ramped up has installed an element of fear in many folk – no one wants to get sick, even if the risk is minimal. All of a sudden, the appeal isn’t quite as attractive as what it once was, we are more mindful of our surroundings. Where we would once just run and jump, there’s now hesitation. And where’s the fun in that? Knowing what the source of the contamination levels in our rivers is gives us a big step in the right direction – but how we try and combat that to bring things back to the way they once were will be the next major question to be answered.

W
hen you think ‘council’, some of the services that might immediately jump to mind are water, rubbish or roads. These are some of our core services we provide in the community, but there is actually a whole host of other responsibilities and tasks that the council also looks after. One such task that many people might not ordinarily consider, is council-owned properties. The council owns and manages over 1500 properties across the district for strategic, social and investment purposes. This includes elderly persons housing, industrial and commercial properties and the management of Crown reserve land. It’s a big job, and the council’s commercial team work very hard keeping these properties and any related activities ticking along. Each property is managed according to the reasons for why it is held, with leases, easements, licences to occupy, reviews and sales all carefully considered on a case by case basis. A recent council matter garnering community interest of late has been around the Order of St John’s plans to extend their Tancred Street headquarters and how they can guarantee legal right of way to the rear of that property through a council-

We are fully supportive of the work St John does in our community, and are working with this invaluable service provider to see that their plans can move forward. For many years, St John has had an informal right-of-way through the Burnett Street property, but their plans dictate that they would need guaranteed certainty moving forward. This is why the council is trying to find the best solution possible for this request. We were working through the
option of selling the land to St John. We’ve recently confirmed that the property is in fact reserve land, and therefore disposing of this land is not as straight forward as a regular property sale. There are rules dictated by Government legislation and it’s therefore important that we go about this task in the right way. There is a report coming to the council’s finance and business support committee meeting tomorrow (Thursday, November 29) where council will be discussing this matter further, especially in regard to the newly
discovered information that the status of the land is reserve. You can see our agendas for all of our meetings on the council website ashburtondc. govt.nz, and I also encourage all residents to consider attending these meetings to see our local decision-making processes in action. Will NZ follow Aust’s housing slump? By Liam Dann House prices have slumped in Australia – around 3 per cent nationwide, but as much as 5 per cent in the Melbourne market and more than 7 per cent in Sydney. With Auckland’s market already stalled and tracking sideways, will we see the trend migrate across the Tasman? In a report released yesterday, ASB economists have looked at the historic correlation between the Australian and New Zealand markets. The bad news is ... it exists. The good news: there are a few variables which suggest the flow through might be tempered this time. “New Zealand house prices have tended to broadly track those in Australia, reflecting similar demand and supply side determinants,” writes ASB senior economist Mark Smith. Smith analysed the historic house price data for both nations over the past 25 years. The results showed a positive two-way relationship between the two markets, with Australia typically having a stronger influence on the New Zealand market than
vice-versa. Sydney prices also appeared to show a stronger influence over Auckland prices than did the prices in cities like Melbourne and Wellington. Typically the New Zealand market responds to Australian house price movements, with a peak impact after about six months, he says.

Smith concludes that mortgage rates and net-migration are significant drivers of the New Zealand market. Australian house prices are more responsive to dwelling supply than New Zealand prices are. By anne GiBson Supermarket giant Woolworths New Zealand, which owns the Countdown chain, has cut some top-level executive staff in New Zealand. “Woolworths NZ has simplified its leadership team, reducing the number of people from 17 to 11. “It was led in New Zealand,”
a statement from the company said yesterday morning. In June, the business announced its new chief was Australian Natalie Davis as managing director of Woolworths NZ. She replaced Dave Chambers who left the business at the end of June and she started at the beginning of July. The staff roles cut are under-
stood to be in a number of divisions. Some of the people worked at New Zealand headquarters on Favona Road, Mangere. Woolworths has 180 Countdown supermarkets in New Zealand, where more than 18,000 people work, according to the company’s website. – NZME

By Lucy Bennett Changes have been made to the controversial Workplace Relations Bill which gives small business a “fair go”, New Zealand First leader Winston Peters says. The bill, which was supported by all three Government partners at first reading, has been the subject of horse-trading between Labour and New Zealand First since it returned from a select committee with few material changes in September. At that time Peters described it as a work in progress but yesterday the bill was back before Parliament, with changes outlined by Workplace Relations Minister Iain Lees-Galloway in supplementary order paper. One change is around the multi-employer collective agreement (Meca) provisions. Employers have a responsibility to enter into bargaining, but are not compelled to settle an agreement, based on reasonable grounds. The other major change is that while unions have the right to enter work sites where union mem-
bers are covered by, or bargaining for, a collective agreement, they need consent from employers in all other circumstances. Peters said New Zealand First’s changes gave small and regional businesses a fair go. “We have looked out for small and medium-sized business to ensure that the law reflects their reality. “We heard that changes needed to be made to ensure small businesses weren’t unfairly treated under the legislation. This is consistent with the bill’s exemption for small business from the 90-day trial rules,” Peters said. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the Government took on board some of the key concerns raised through submissions made during the select committee process. “The Government has also had its own constructive internal discussions to produce an improved bill. Each party has brought their different views and the subsequent consensus reached will result in employment law that is better for workers and employ-
ers,” she said. Every aspect of the bill was better than the current employment legislation and provided rights and protections for workers that had been stripped by the previous National government, she said. “Overall there is much to celebrate in this legislation, which I am sure will lead to better and more consistent outcomes in New Zealand workplaces.” National has called the bill a “return to the 1970s”. It is expected to pass its second reading with the support of all Government parties. Lees-Galloway said earlier yesterday that all three parties and unions were happy with the changes. “I would summarise the changes as reasonable changes that ensure that the bill continues to strengthen workers’ rights, strikes a good balance between the needs of businesses and workers and is something that all three parties of Government are very comfortable with.” – NZME

Got that broad bean feeling? It’s broad bean season and that’s a cause for celebration – for some. Many people turn their noses up at broad beans based on past experience where they were presented with large, dry, almost inedible beans boiled to within an inch of their lives. There’s much more to the humble broad bean, but to enjoy them at their best you really need to have a home vege plot. If you have broad beans in the garden, then you can pick them when they’re young and at their best. That’s when they’d give young peas a run for their money.

300g podded broad beans 150g rindless, smoked, dry cured streaky bacon 3T extra virgin olive oil, plus 1t, and extra to serve 1 fat garlic clove, finely chopped 50g (1-2) shallots, finely chopped 1T lemon juice ** 2T coarsely chopped fresh flat leaf parsley or mint Sea salt flakes

■ Drop the beans into a pan of well-salted boiling water and cook for 5 minutes or until just tender. Drain and, when cool enough to handle, nick the skin of each one with your fingernail and pop out the beans. ■ Cut the bacon rashers crossways into thin strips (about 2cm). ■ Heat the 1t of oil in a large frying pan, add the bacon and stir-fry over a high heat for about 3 minutes, until crisp and golden. ■ Tip on to a plate lined with kitchen paper and set aside. ■ Add the 3T oil and the garlic to the pan and put over a medium heat. ■ As soon as the garlic is sizzling (but not browned), turn down the heat. Add the shallots, then soften for 3-4 minutes. Stir in the beans. ■ Stir for 2 minutes until warmed through. ■ Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the lemon juice, most of the crisp bacon, the parsley or mint and some seasoning to taste. ■ Spoon on to a serving plate, drizzle over a little more oil, then scatter over the remaining crisp bacon and a few sea salt flakes and serve.

Broad bean dip
300g podded fresh broad bean 2 garlic cloves, halved lengthways 3 anchovy fillets, chopped 25g parmesan, grated Juice and zest 1/2 lemon 3T olive oil ■ Cook the broad beans in a pan of boiling salted water for 3 mins until they float. ■ Drain and quickly run under icecold water to stop them cooking. ■ Squeeze the small green beans from their skins and discard the skins. ■ Fry the garlic and anchovies in a small pan for a few minutes until golden. ■ Stir through the broad beans. ■ Transfer to a bowl (or use a pestle and mortar) and crush the broad beans with the parmesan, lemon juice and zest, and oil. ■ Will keep in the fridge for 3 days.

■ Blanch broad beans and remove husks. ■ Blend all ingredients except prosciutto and mint in food processor until combined but chunky. ■ Add a tablespoon of water if required. Season to taste. ■ Spread on toasted sesame flatbread and top with a twist of prosciutto. ■ Add a squeeze of lime juice before serving. Garnish with SANTOS mint leaves.

■ In a small bowl, beat the egg yolks with the cream and mustard. ■ Season with lots of black pepper. ■ Cook the pasta following pack instructions. Drain the pasta, saving some of the cooking water. ■ Toss pasta through the pancetta in the frying pan. ■ Tip in the egg and cream mix and stir to coat, adding a splash of the reserved water, if needed. ■ Toss half of the grated parmesan through and scatter the remain$2,200* ing parmesan on top.
200g self-raising flour, plus extra for dusting 100g butter 3 medium eggs 200ml reduced-fat crème fraîche 40g vegetarian parmesan, finely grated Handful fresh thyme leaves, plus extra sprigs to garnish 250g freshly podded broad beans 280g jar roasted red peppers in oil, drained and roughly chopped ■ Place the flour in a bowl and add butter. Rub in with your fingertips until the mixture looks like fine breadcrumbs. ■ Add 2T cold water and work the mixture into a ball. ■ Wrap in cling film and chill for 30 minutes. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the pastry. ■ Use to line a 23cm round x 3cm deep loose-bottomed, fluted tart tin – press into the tin if you find this easier. ■ Prick the base several times with a fork and pop in the freezer for 10 minutes. ■ Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 200°C. ■ Line the pastry with baking paper and baking beans and blindbake for 10 minutes. ■ Remove the paper and beans and bake for a further 5 minutes or until the pastry is dry and pale golden. ■ In a large bowl, beat together the eggs, crème fraîche and parmesan. Stir in the thyme, broad beans and red peppers and season with plenty of black pepper. ■ Pour into the pastry case and bake for 25-30 minutes or until the filling is just set and pale golden. Cool in the tin for 10 minutes, then put on a serving plate. ■ Garnish with thyme sprigs, slice and serve with a salad, if you like.

Serious about safety Joseph Parker’s promoters Duco Events have committed to putting all boxers appearing on their cards through MRI brain scans – starting with their next event in Christchurch on December 15. Duco Events have previously required fighters to undergo a mandatory CT scan to gain medical clearance to enter the ring. The Mid Canterbury Bowling Sub Centre Over 70s tournament was held at the Ashburton MSA Bowling Club, and it was the trio of Bruce Harper, Mike Quinn and John Moffat who took it out with three wins and 13 ends. In second place was the team of Bruce Hopwood, John Withell and Ian Moore with two wins, one draw and 13 ends, ahead of Eric Maw, Maurice Reid and Ann Leitch in third with two wins and 13 ends. End of F1 for Hartley Brendon Hartley’s run with Toro Rosso is over. And according to Motorsport journalist Bob McMurray, so is his Formula One racing career. The Kiwi driver was axed by the team after Toro Rosso announced Alexander Albon, who finished third in Formula Two this year, as the new driver to team up with Daniil Kvyat for the 2019 season. With Hartley’s 2018 team-mate Pierre Gasly promoted to the Red Bull Formula One team there seemed a chance the Le Mans winner and World Endurance champion would race for a second full season. But after finishing the season in 19th on the drivers’ championship standings out of 20 drivers with just four points and a ninthplaced finish at the USA Grand Prix his best of the season, the 29-year-old’s departure wasn’t a huge surprise. According to McMurray, who believed Hartley’s performance simply wasn’t good enough, said that the Kiwi driver’s only shot at staying in Formula One was to be a test driver. “All the seats are filled now for this coming season, every seat is effectively spoken for, so there’s not going to be any seats in Formula One,” McMurray said yesterday. “The best he can hope for is

“I’m not being down on Brendon, I think he’s a fantastic driver, but he simply could have beaten Gasly.
“So that kind of wraps up his career certainly with Torro Rosso and Red Bull, most probably with Formula One. “Maybe it’s time for Brendon to start looking at new pastures.” Hartley made his Formula One debut last season at the USA Grand Prix, replacing Gasly for the drive before becoming a fulltime replacement for Kvyat. He recorded his first Formula One point at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in April with a 10th placing. The last time a New Zealand driver earned a Formula One point was Chris Amon in the 1976 Spanish Grand Prix. Hartley followed that up with a 10th at the German Grand Prix in July and a career-best ninth in Austin. He had five retirements from his 21 races this year including a scary crash at the Canadian Grand Prix when he collided with Williams-Mercedes driver Lance Stroll and was pushed into a wall on the opening lap. It seems unlikely that Hartley will find a drive at another Formula One team for next season. All the driving spots are filled except for one with Lance Stroll widely expected to be announced as the second Force India driver alongside Sergio Perez. - NZME
Tennis’ Big Three The Big Three of men’s tennis are the year-ending top three – something that last happened in 2014. With Novak Djokovic at world No.1, Rafael Nadal No. 2 and Roger Federer at No.3 yesterday, the legendary trio lead the season’s final ATP rankings for the seventh time. This is the first time, though, that each spent time at No.1 during the same year. The seven changes there were the most since 1999, when there were eight. - PA
Newcombe Medal shared Young guns Ashleigh Barty and Alex de Minaur have been named as joint winners of the Newcombe Medal on a historic night for Australian tennis. Judges were unable to split Barty and de Minaur after both enjoyed stellar seasons, ensuring Australian tennis’ highest individual honour was shared for the first time in the award’s nineyear history. Barty joins former US Open champion and French Open finalist Samantha Stosur (2010, 2011, 2012) as only the second multiple recipient after ending 2018 as Australia’s highest-ranked player at No.15 in the world. - AAP
Verstappen a threat Lewis Hamilton says he expects Max Verstappen to be in the thick of next season’s Formula One championship fight. Hamilton won the 11th grand prix of his title-winning campaign with a dominant performance at the year’s final race in Abu Dhabi on Sunday, and celebrated by going backstage at a Guns N’ Roses concert. The Mercedes star, 33, will be heading to his traditional winter training base in Colorado from where he will take stock of a remarkable season which took him to within two titles of Michael Schumacher’s record seven haul. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, who Hamilton beat to the championship with two rounds to spare, will be among his rivals again in 2019, while the Briton has also backed Verstappen to feature prominently. - PA

Golf’s brave new direction? A
s the rain steadily fell from the sky once again on Saturday, I found myself doing something you wouldn’t often find me doing. I watched golf. And I actually enjoyed it. Golf, to me, was a bit like what a lot of people thought of test cricket. Long, slow and boring. But this golf was different. It was totally American, over the top and edge of the seat stuff. I didn’t even know what I was watching for a start. My husband had been watching it, so from the 17th hole I sat down and started watching too. Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson were playing each other. Now, I knew enough about golf to understand who these guys were, how the game worked, what the big tournaments were, and that kind of thing. But this one had escaped my sporting radar. Turns out it was The Match. It wasn’t a tournament, it was
just a round of golf between two of the world’s best players, and there just happened to be a massive $US9 million up for grabs. It wasn’t just any $US9 million either, it was $US9 million in cash, sitting right there in clear plastic boxes on the course. Turns out it was being played at the Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas. That explained a lot. I asked why it was Woods and Mickelson playing and not, for example, the top two players in the world at the moment as dictated by the world rankings, and that would be Justin Rose and Brooks Koepka. My husband informed me it was because Woods and Mickelson were pretty much the most famous golfers in the world, which kind of made sense. Had it been Rose and Koepka playing off in The Match, it probably wouldn’t have had the same ring to it, and had non-golfing types like me on the edge of my seat. It was going to be a pretty big
payday for one of them, with $NZ13 million on the line, and just to add to the entertainment I’m told there was the odd wager on some of the holes before I tuned in. While on a golf course in Mid Canterbury losing a hole might have meant having to buy your opponent a beer, in the case of these two guys they were talking hundreds of thousands of dollars. When there was a potential pay-day of $US9 million, and you were already in a pretty good financial position after years of being among the top golfers in the world and all those fancy endorsements that came with it, why not? To put the amount into context though, that pay-packet was more than 10 per cent of Mickelson’s career earnings. It was a hang of a lot of money, even in his books. The pair squared off in 18 holes of match play and Mickelson looked set to wrap it up on the 17th hole, until Tiger chipped in to send it to the final hole.

And the drama wasn’t done with. There was so little between them that 18 holes wasn’t enough. As darkness started to fall they played an extra hole, but even that still wasn’t enough so they headed to the 20th hole, which was lit by floodlights, and just kept playing it until someone got one up. There were a couple of putts conceded there, by both players, that – when you considered the prize on offer – was incredibly sporting. But like Mickelson said when he conceded Tiger’s putt on the 21st hole, “I don’t want to end it like this”.

Eventually Mickelson took it out on the 22nd hole, and it wasn’t until the photographers started snapping away and the flashes lit the scene up, and the television cameras shot back to the presenters at their little desk that you realised just how dark it was. It was quite a finish, to quite a match. As a non-golfer, I was drawn to the invitation-only event with only 700 people present on the course for a number of reasons. It was because of who was playing and it was fascinating listening in on the dialogue between both them, and them and their caddies, and because it was such a typical, over the top American type event with such a dramatic ending. They certainly don’t do things by halves in America. They went all out for this firsttime event and I’m sure it proved to be a winner in terms of both ratings, and money raised for charity – which I only found out right at the very end, was also part of it.

Top draw for Speeding Spur Speeding Spur was the big winner among the New Zealand Inter Dominion contingent when the barrier draws were announced for the opening heats of the series on Monday. The John and Josh Dickietrained square-gaiter has drawn perfectly in barrier two in the first heat of the trotting series at Melton on Saturday night. Landing that starting spot saw Australian bookmakers open the seven-year-old at $1.35 win odds. Speeding Spur has been prepped for his Inter Dominion tilt at the Dickies’ Clevedon property and will fly to Melbourne tonight. It is a familiar trip for reigning New Zealand trotter of the year and his team, and it is one his trainers expect him to thrive on. “If anything he loves the travelling, he likes getting away from home,” Josh Dickie said. “He knows he is in charge at home, but when he is away he relaxes out a bit. “Flying and going to a different property is something he doesn’t have to worry about usually.” The Dickies gave Speeding
Spur a thorough checking over after he returned to their stable following his fourth behind Marcoola in the Dominion. The horse passed their inspection with flying colours to book his ticket to Victoria. “He got home straight away; we had to obviously make sure everything was all good with him before we decided to go to the Inter Dominions. “Everything was all good and his trackwork has been great and we are looking forward to getting him over there.” Josh Dickie has five days to study the form of the 11 rivals drawn around him. Monty Python, who is a solid mobile beginner, also contests the opening trotting heat for Oamaru trainer Phil Williamson. Alderbeck, who is only a moderate off the gate, drew nicely in barrier four for Williamson in the second heat of the trotting series. She has the favourite and gateflyer, Torando Valley, two spots outside her in barrier 6. The Andy Gath-trained trotter has opened at $1.50 odds in heat two.

Top galloper returns Hawke’s Bay spring carnival star Melody Belle enjoyed a winning outing at the trials on her home track at Matamata yesterday and looks set to add to her Group One haul. The Jamie Richards-trained mare is unbeaten in three races this season having won the Gr.2 Foxbridge Plate at Te Rapa before taking out a Group One double at Hastings with victories in the Tarzino Trophy (1400m) and Windsor Park Plate (1600m). Black-type targeted Well-travelled mare Bisou Bisou achieved black-type at Counties on Saturday when victorious in the Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1400m). The seven-yearold is now unbeaten in her two starts for new trainer Nigel Tiley and will be set for more stakes targets this season after beating Group One winner Volpe Veloce by a short-head on Saturday. “She was very well ridden and Andrew (Calder, jockey) saved a lot of ground on her,” Tiley said. “We’re looking for fillies and mares races (with her now). There’s a nice race coming up at Te Rapa in three weeks’ time, the Cal Isuzu Stakes. It’s 1600m, so we’ll try and stretch her out to a mile.” - NZME

New role for Hansen? Steve Hansen is set to quit as All Blacks coach after next year’s Rugby World Cup in Japan – and take up a newly created role as New Zealand Rugby’s director of rugby. That’s the stunning claim made by former Irish test back-rower Alan Quinlan. Quinlan, who played 27 tests for the Irish between 1999 and 2008, claims to have details about NZR’s succession plan should Hansen decide to stand down as All Blacks head coach after next year’s World Cup – in a similar move to that of Joe Schmidt. Schmidt announced on Monday that he will “finish coaching” after the Japan showpiece to “prioritise family commitments”. Speaking on the On The Ball AM show, Quinlan reveals he has spoken to former All Blacks Justin Marshall and Jeff Wilson, who claim to have inside information on Hansen’s future. “I spoke to Jeff Wilson last week and I was asking him and Justin Marshall: ‘What’s the talk back home in New Zealand?’,” Quinlan says. “Both of them were saying there’s no major talk of Joe Schmidt coming back. “They know what he’s achieving and people know he’s doing really well in Ireland. “The talk is that Steve Hansen is going up as a director of rugby and then there will be a possibility of a [vacant head coach] position.”
Pressure on Cheika Former Wallabies players have called for immediate changes in the Australian side, slamming under fire head coach Michael Cheika for having “too much control”. Cheika’s side now hold a winning ratio of just 30 per cent – the worst success rate since 1958. Former test hooker Brendan Cannon has urged RA to take immediate action. “They can’t sit back and let this decline continue without someone deciding to take the bull by the horns, say this is unacceptable and we need to do something to turn it around.” - AAP
Schmidt’s legacy Ireland fullback Rob Kearney believes coach Joe Schmidt will do everything in his power to set Ireland up for a sustained period of success after he leaves. Schmidt has dragged Ireland from eighth to second in the world in five years at the helm, and the New Zealander will step down after next year’s World Cup. Former England assistant coach Andy Farrell will replace Schmidt as Ireland boss after the tournament, with the Irish Rugby Football Union quick to confirm its long-term plans. - AAP
Thunder sign Priest Steve Hansen: Does he have a new job pencilled in already? According to Quinlan, the expectation is that All Blacks assistant Ian Foster will replace Hansen. “The thing that happened when Graham Henry left was that Hansen stepped up. “So, there’s not really an awful lot of change or structure to the group. “There’s talk that a similar sce-
nario is happening with Ian Foster and he’ll step up and take the head coach role – with Hansen moving up into that director of rugby role.” Hansen is expected to make an announcement on his future on December 17 in Christchurch. Quinlan doesn’t think Schmidt, who led the Irish to a historic win over the All Blacks a fortnight
ago, will return to New Zealand any time soon. “He might not go back for a while, he might take a break. “Any of the Super Rugby franchises will take him. “He could go to Australia and take a job there,” Quinlan said. “Everyone would want Joe if he went back down to the Southern Hemisphere.” - NZME
Sydney Thunder have secured their powerhouse three internationals for this summer’s Women’s Big Bash League, with Kiwi Rachel Priest joining Harmanpreet Kaur and Stefanie Taylor at the club. New Zealand’s day of disaster The Black Caps’ collapse at the hands of Yasir Shah and Pakistan yesterday morning created several unwanted records. From 50-0, the Black Caps tumbled to 90 all out in their first innings, with Shah taking eight wickets. Here are some of the records that fell during the innings, and other stunning statistics from the meltdown. Most ducks in a test innings The Black Caps equalled the record for the most ducks in a test innings, with six in their first innings. Ross Taylor, Henry Nicholls, Colin de Grandhomme, Ish Sodhi, Neil Wagner and Trent Boult all came and went without scoring – five of them being victims of Shah. The record for a match, in case it becomes relevant, is 11. The best bowling figures against New Zealand Shah’s 8-41 were the best figures ever recorded in a test match against the Black Caps, beating a long-standing record held by the delightfully named ‘Goofy’ Lawrence. A 6’5” South African fast bowl-
er, Lawrence took 8-53 against New Zealand in 1961, but only played five tests due to South Africa’s limited test schedule. Other incredible names – any excuse to write Srinivasaraghavan Venkataraghavan is always welcome – also took eight wickets against the Black Caps, with Shah joining Lawrence, Venkataraghavan, Erapalli Prasanna and Paul Strang as the best of an exclusive club. Shah will need four more wickets to claim the best figures in a match against New Zealand, a record held by Courtney Walsh’s 13-55, set back in 1995. 10 wickets in a day by one bowler Shah became the first player this century to claim 10 wickets in a day, adding the only two wickets to fall in the second innings to the eight he claimed in the first. His first innings figures were the third-best ever by a Pakistani, but claiming 10 in a day was a first for a Pakistan bowler, and he was the first man from any nation to hit that milestone since Anil Kumble in 1999. The record?
15 in a day, by England bowler Johnny Briggs back in the 19th century. The worst performance ever by batsmen 4-11 From Ross Taylor at four to Trent Boult at 11, the Black Caps added just five runs – the least in test history from batsmen 4-11. Ajaz Patel produced four of them at number 10, and a single to BJ Watling was all the rest that could be mustered. The old record was eight runs, set by the Sri Lankan lineup in 1990. The Black Caps’ lowest total since 2013 2013 was a bad time for Black Caps batsmen, with the famous 45 all out against South Africa in January being followed by collapsing for 68 against England in May. That innings at Lord’s – when chasing just 238 for victory – saw Stuart Broad take seven wickets, and England only use two bowlers to claim all 10 wickets. Since then, the Black Caps hadn’t been bowled for under 100 – until yesterday. (An unsurprising aside – the Black Caps have never won a test when being bowled out for 90 or
fewer in an innings.) 10 wickets for 40 runs After being well positioned at 50-0, the Black Caps lost all 10 wickets for 40 runs. If that doesn’t do much for you, then how about... Seven wickets for 11 runs From 61-1 to 72-8 – or perhaps you prefer… Seven wickets in 27 balls For Yasir Shah, as he ripped the innings to pieces. That innings, was in fact the ... Eighth shortest innings by New Zealand The Black Caps lasted just 35.3 overs – the record being 19.2 overs, in the aforementioned “All out for 45” debacle against South Africa in 2013. But, to end on a positive note – when Kane Williamson reached seven in his first innings, he passed Martin Crowe for fourth on the all-time test runscoring charts for New Zealand. Jilted Warriors star Shaun Johnson has requested a release from the final year of his contract with the Auckland NRL club. The 28-year-old halfback has a year remaining on his current million dollars per season deal but wants out immediately after the Warriors made it clear they are in no rush to re-sign him beyond 2019. As first reported by the Herald last month, the Warriors informed Johnson and his manager that they would not be moving quickly to offer him a contract extension and that he was free to test his value on the open market. In an explosive development in a fast-moving story, a disgruntled Johnson met with Warriors boss Cameron George and coach Stephen Kearney yesterday and requested an immediate release while he explores options with several rival clubs in Australia. It’s unclear where he might land if he is eventually released but Cronulla are believed to be the early front-runners among a group of at least four clubs willing to bid for his services. However, Johnson’s request has been denied and the Warriors are so far holding firm in insisting that
he see out the remainder of his contract. The Penrose-based franchise are believed to have plans in the pipeline to replace the 162-game veteran long-term but still want him on deck at Mt Smart next season. The Warriors have not ruled out re-signing the mercurial playmaker for 2020 and beyond but concerns over his consistency mean they are unwilling to throw him the amount of cash reserved only for the game’s elite players. Johnson, the club’s marquee player and poster boy since his debut back in 2011, has not taken the news well. Up until now, he has been the club’s priority every time his contract has come up for renewal and Johnson now finds himself in unfamiliar territory. Johnson last year became the highest paid player in the club’s history when he re-signed on a two-year extension worth sevenfigures. However, much like the club is now doing, he took his time before recommitting and had discussions with rival clubs including the Sydney Roosters. With a cloud of uncertainty hanging over his future at the Warriors, Johnson is now ready to up
and leave rather than stick around and prove his worth and value to the club. Calls to the Warriors have so far gone unanswered but the ball is now in their court regarding Johnson’s future. If the Warriors do decide to grant him his wish and release Johnson it will send a clear message to fans that the club is not just doing what it’s always done in automatically re-signing him. The news comes after Johnson broke his silence on the matter via an emotional social media post on Monday expressing his frustration at the situation and explaining the impasse meant he was shopping himself around. “I thought it’s best I clear a couple things up regarding my situation at this stage with the Warriors,” said Johnson. “Firstly, there is no contract for me to sign past 2019. “Secondly if you saw the article that came out a few weeks back [...] they said they are in no rush to resign me. Since then they have told me again at this stage they [won’t] be offering me anything. “That means I get to spread my wings and see what’s out there so right now that’s what I’m doing!”. - NZME

Tessa McCann didn’t have a lot of game time under her belt as she headed into the defence of her Canterbury Open women’s singles tennis title in Christchurch at the weekend. But that didn’t hold her back and she came out on top in hardfought three-set battles in both her semi-final and the final to reclaim her crown. It was another in a long string of tournament wins for McCann, one of the country’s top juniors who attended Rangi Ruru Girls’
School in Christchurch but lived in Ashburton, but it was one that meant so much to her as the youngster looked to rebuild her confidence after a not-so-memorable 2017/18 season. McCann, 17, took out her first Canterbury women’s singles title last season, but she said the rest of the season was a shocker. “I went to nationals and I just froze and didn’t play well, and lost lots of three-setters and lost, having had match points and set points,” McCann said. Her confidence took a massive hit, but she appeared to break the
three-set curse in her title defence at the weekend. After heading into the tournament as the defending champion and second seed, she beat Jade Feneon 6-2 2-6 7-5 in the final, having to fight her way back into the match after going from leading 4-2 in the final set to losing three games in a row, to set up a thrilling finish. Feneon had earlier beaten top seed Abby Mason in one semifinal, while McCann beat Beth Williamson – who had recently returned from a scholarship in America – in her semi 7-6 3-6 6-2.
McCann’s build-up to the tournament had been limited to training and a few hits here and there, as she had decided to take a break from playing premier grade tennis in Christchurch this season. In fact, other than a tournament in Otago in September, the last time McCann had actually played a match was back in March. Needing a bit of a break from tennis, McCann had started working as a lifeguard in the weekends, but once she returned to Ashburton for the summer after her final Year 12 exam today it was possible she could make the odd appear-
ance in the local competition at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre. She didn’t have any club commitments this season, but she still had some tournaments on her radar, including an ITF tournament in Christchurch in January, and the national secondary schools’ tournament. But one tournament that wasn’t on her radar was the nationals, and it would be the first time since her family returned to New Zealand from a year in Australia in 2013 that she hadn’t played at the nationals.
