Double fatality crash caps horror week By Jaime Pitt-MacKay

The sombre tone in Tyrone Burrowes’ voice yesterday told the story of a tough week at the office. With the memories of a horrific early morning crash on Sunday involving eight teenagers still fresh in their minds, the Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade chief and his team were called to a double fatality crash on the edge of Chertsey on Thursday night. Crashes, particularly those with a large number of people involved, are always taxing on first responders, but to have two in the space of a week puts an extra strain on the emotional state of those called to the scene. “It’s certainly been tough,” he said. “It is challenging when you are dealing with six injuries like we had last night and the eight that we had on Sunday morning. “But it was what we are trained to do.” Burrowes said good procedures were in place through Fire and Emergency New Zealand to help firefighters deal with such situations and they had already checked in with the Rakaia team. “They are doing well considering.” The majority of those who attended Thursday night’s crash

Emergency services were called to the scene of the three-vehicle crash near the intersection of Wilkinsons Road, next to the Chertsey Racecourse, and State Highway One around 7pm. The Guardian understands that a southbound vehicle crossed the centre line and clipped a northbound vehicle before also hitting a second car, which was also heading north. The two occupants of the southbound vehicle were killed

and it is also understood they are Mid Canterbury locals. The road was closed for up to five hours while emergency services worked to attend to those injured and the Serious Crash Unit were on the scene quickly to begin their investigations before returning again on Friday morning. A police spokesperson said the road was re-opened shortly after midnight. “Enquiries into the cause of the crash are ongoing and the names of the deceased will be released

once all next-of-kin notifications have taken place,” they said. St John spokesman Gerard Campbell said two ambulances from Ashburton were sent to the scene and took two patients, one with serious injuries and one with moderate injuries, to Christchurch Hospital. The crash occurred on the same day a 14-year-old was charged over Sunday morning’s crash involving a group of teenagers – just 10 minutes north of Thursday’s accident site – in the Rakaia township.

A 27-year-old male has been arrested in relation to an incident where a male was alleged to have entered a woman’s vehicle in the middle of the day and assaulted her. The 27-year-old was arrested by police on Friday and has been charged with indecent assault,

and with unlawfully getting into a motor vehicle. Ashburton sub-area supervisor senior sergeant Leigh Jenkins said enquiries are ongoing in relation to the individual’s recent activity. Police put out an appeal for information on Wednesday. In a press release, Detective Craig Clare said that at about 3.30pm last Thursday a woman

was parked directly outside the post office on East Street when a man she did not know allegedly got into her vehicle. The man supposedly demanded a ride to Allenton before assaulting her. The woman was able to force the man out of the vehicle. Clare said at the time they believed it to be a random, isolated

incident and at that stage it was not connected to the suspicious approach of an Ashburton Intermediate student last Friday, or an incident mentioned in a post on the Ashburton Noticeboard Facebook group where a woman said her daughter had been approached by a man matching the description of the man involved with this incident.

Local police joined their colleagues nationwide in paying tribute to slain Constable Matthew Hunt on Friday, a week after he was shot and killed completing a traffic stop in the Auckland suburb of Massey. Police commissioner Andrew Coster asked all officers to observe a minute’s silence at 10.37am. Ashburton sub-area supervisor senior sergeant Leigh Jenkins said the flag at the Ashburton Police Station had been at half-mast since the incident, and that staff observed the minute’s silence standing out the back of the police station. “Staff feel for the family of Constable Hunt,” Jenkins said. “Our staff run toward danger, and on occasion this is the result. “Mid Canterbury staff are appreciative for the level of support we receive in the communities we work in.” Only one Ashburton police officer has died while on active duty, he was constable Peter Robert Heritage who was killed in a car accident on the Ashburton River bridge in 1983. A number of Ashburton officers have had notable brushes with death, including Mark Prendergast and Mark Dryland, who were shot at when they attempted to serve a tresspass notice in relation to a domestic incident on April 12, 1998. Prendergast was shot in the shoulder, while Dryland suffered a head injury from wood splinters from a fence post that exploded from the impact of a bullet. The person fired six shots at the officers as they made their way onto the property. Another Ashburton police officer, constable Vince Nolan, narrowly escaped death in 1972 when he was shot at almost point-blank range in the Ashburton police watch-house.

Boulevard Day canned for this year By Sue Newman

In a shock move, the organisers of Boulevard Day have decided to can this year’s event, taking a break from the street day that has been an Ashburton District institution for decades. The decision to call the event off was not an easy one, Bob McDonald and Sue Cooper said, but it has come on the back of concerns over news that Covid-19 cases have now been found in Christchurch. That has sparked fears the disease could spread to other South Island locations and that made the risk of holding an event that attracts thousands of people and where contact tracing would be impossible, simply too high, McDonald said. “What if another outbreak kicked off at Boulevard Day. We don’t want to be responsible for the biggest Covid outbreak in the South Island and we see there are so many cons and not enough pros for holding this, this year,” he said. In an email to stallholders and local retailers McDonald and Cooper said the risk to public safety far outweighed the benefits of holding the event. An indication of stallholder caution came in the numbers confirmed for this year’s event – just 45 and that’s less than half the confirmations that would usually be received by the end of June, McDonald said.

As Covid-19 cases are ongoing, organisers of Boulevard Day have decided to pull the pin for this year. A point had been reached in the organising time frame where a decision had to be made and because everything was so uncertain the call had to be made, Cooper said. Feedback from stallholders

who had already booked sites was positive, she said, with everyone saying they would book again in 2021. An additional concern was the feedback filtering through from some of the event’s traditional

supporters saying they were evaluating their business plans and the events they would attend. And when that was added to the clear changes in people’s spending habits, it made sense to call the event off, she said.

Call for a moratorium on water bottling plants By Sue Newman

Stopping the establishment of a water bottling plant on the outskirts of Ashburton was a battle the community fought on its own, but it’s one that could soon see local authorities around New Zealand mount united opposition. Queenstown Lakes is leading the charge in calling for a nationwide moratorium on applications by companies wanting to take or use water for water bottling or for

bulk export. That council has put a remit to next month’s local government conference calling for a comprehensive review of legislation and the policy that needs to be developed around the issue. And it hopes other councils will add their support. Because large scale water bottling was a relatively new industry in New Zealand, there was no clear policy governing taking water for this use, the Queenstown Lakes council said.

At Thursday’s Ashburton District Council meeting councillors gave mayor Neil Brown a clear mandate to support the remit, but councillor Diane Rawlinson questioned whether the remit would effectively stop the bottling of water for domestic use. “I believe bottling water for bulk export is what aggrieves most people, doing this for no return. I believe this is really a two-part debate,” she said. The Mid Canterbury commu-

nity was united in opposing plans by a New Zealand company to buy a council owned section in the North East Business Park and to use its water consent to establish a water bottling plant. After huge community angst and protest rallies, the water bottling company abandoned its plans. In its remit, the Queenstown council said it was concerned that consents to take water were being ‘banked’ against the day they could be sold as part of a land deal

and that effectively created an unregulated water market. It wants other councils to support it in calling for Local Government New Zealand to initiate a comprehensive, nationwide discussion on water bottling but in the interim it wants a moratorium on applications to take or use water for bottling and bulk exports. It also wants regional councils to review inactive water bottling consents with a view to withdrawing these.

New Zealand’s national ambulance service provides many different opportunities to volunteer, and there are not many of them that Rochelle Spencer has not filled in her time with St John. She has worked on the frontlines, helped nurture young people in the organisation’s youth wing and is now working to ensure their operations in the Ashburton District run smoothly. Spencer currently is the youth manager for the district, and is also on the area comittee. She started volunteering with St John as a youth leader in 2006 when her daughter became a cadet, having herself been a cadet in her youth, and family had been involved in the organisation as well. “You could say it was in my genes,” she said. She is now the area manager for the youth groups in both the Ashburton and Selwyn Districts, managing seven youth divisions, two in the Ashburton District in Ashburton and Methven and five

od, with an online platform built to allow cadets to still complete their badges, just in an online way.

“We have really good numbers at the moment and they are always increasing,” she said. “It is something that is really thriving. “We have no trouble finding kids but it is hard finding volunteer leaders. “A lot of people just don’t have the time to volunteer these days. “I absolutely love it, the kids are amazing, some of the youngest ones from when I first started have got married and are now paramedics or nurses, they really become your family. “I consider all the people my family, it is not just an organisation.” Spencer, who is a qualified embalmer for a local funeral home, spends, on average, around two hours a week in her role as area youth leader, but that total can increase in the build-up to big events such as camps and competitions. “Most of the time we roll in to a camp with no sleep, so you can imagine what it is like by the end of that weekend, but it is great fun,” she said.

Spencer has also worked as a volunteer emergency medical technician, and is currently on the Ashburton area committee which handles the running of all services operated by St John in the local district. “I’ve been doing it for three years because the elections are this year,” she said. The committee is in control of the welfare of members in the district and the organisation’s role in the community. The council controls the running of the local health shuttle, Op Shop, operational services, youth groups and caring callers. “We have more than 100 volunteers in the district at the moment,” she said. “There is always room for more, especially in Methven with the youth divisions.” Spencer encouraged anyone interested in volunteering with St John to give it a go. Retiring to take up volunteering By Susan Sandys

After helping others throughout her whole working life, Beverley Price had one goal for when she retired, and that was to keep helping people. “There’s been something in me for a number of years now – I will volunteer when I retire,” she said. The 66-year-old was a Salvation Army minister for 33 years, and served throughout New Zealand in the role, including at Auckland, Wellington, Tauranga, Eltham and Christchurch. As such, she has been based in many a Salvation Army setting, including working in resthomes, and administration at the organisation’s headquarters. “Within Salvation Army I have been involved with elderly for a number of years, so I like that age group. They have had these wonderful lives before they have got to this stage,” Price said. She grew up in Hamilton, but took the opportunity to retire to Ashburton in 2018 to be near her mother who was in a resthome in

Christchurch at the time. Price said after all these years of looking forward to volunteering, she had recently joined up to Presbyterian Support’s HomeShare. The service is currently expanding, looking for more volunteers to use their own homes to host older people in small groups, providing companionship and activities. Price takes a group of three to four into her cosy lounge room, at her two-bedroom town-centre unit, each Monday. Her group has returned this month after taking a hiatus through the Covid-19 alert levels. “It’s wonderful to be able to volunteer, whatever your age and circumstances,” she said. Her jobs include cooking everyone a main meal and dessert, with Presbyterian Support reimbursing the cost of the food. She also sets up activities, with the number-tile game Rummy-O being a favourite. “We play this game and they love it,” she said. “I enjoy their company, and just meeting another group of people.”

If the measure is cups of tea, then Friends of Ashburton Hospital have poured somewhere in the thousands. No one quite knows, and no one quite has the time to sit down and try and work it out, but somewhere within that vicinity sits well with co-ordinator Dot Webb. Established in 1974, members of the volunteer-run organisation have been a regular presence and only the threat of Covid-19 stopped the tea trolley from jingling its way down the corridors on a daily basis. And the return post lockdown wasn’t just welcomed by patients either. “The volunteers do such an amazing job, especially when we are busy,” acting charge nurse, Julie Broker said. The volunteer role, while all encompassing, can see those who give their time taking on all variances of tasks throughout the day from handing out morning tea, to changing library books on a Wednesday, but their core functions run far deeper than just what’s on the surface. “Our 50 volunteers are very special people,” Webb said. “They are kind, caring, compassionate, non-judgement and excellent communicators. “But what we really give out the most is time.” Webb said the even just sitting with an anxious patient and holding their hand or reading to them could often make all the difference to someone. But the act of giving is something that certainly goes both ways. Many of the volunteers live by themselves so the social aspect of the hospital environment is one they welcome each time they walk through the doors. “We get to know some of the longer stay patients and the staff quite well. “For the volunteers, giving back to the community and having a sense of belonging is a

In fact, The CBD contract consists of three separate stages of work, and only the undergrounding of the first stage (Cass Street and portions of Havelock, Tancred and Burnett streets) will be completed by summer. Appeal referred Governor-General Dame Patsy Reddy has referred Scott Watson’s convictions for murder back to the Court of Appeal, Justice Minister Andrew Little announced yesterday. Watson has been in prison since 1999 for the murders of Olivia Hope, 17, and Ben Smart, 21, who disappeared in the Marlborough Sounds on New Year’s Day 1998. He unsuccessfully appealed to the Court of Appeal in 2000 and lost a subsequent application for leave to appeal to the Privy Council. This is the fourth time Watson has challenged his convictions for the murders.

Around five years ago, some volunteers began knitting baby clothes and blankets for the maternity ward and again, like anything with time, the demand for those has grown substantially too.

“Now, thanks to a generous grant from Advance Ashburton, we were able to purchase a good supply of pure wool for the knitters amongst us.” That grant was received just prior to lockdown commencing and the race was on immediately to ensure that the wool was sourced and delivered to those keen knitters before Alert Level Four arrived and made travel impossible. The group are prominent throughout the year at the hospital and make sure each year to bring some Christmas cheer to the facility at what can be an emotional time for those there during the festive season. tive volunteers in-tow singing carols and doing their best to put a smile on everyone’s face. The group lays a wreath each year on Anzac Day also. Usually it’s placed in the chapel, but this year it was moved to reception, so everyone was able to see it. While seemingly well served in terms of numbers, the group are always on the look-out for new volunteers. Having secretary, Jane Riach and treasurer, Jackie Rapley on board and helping has lessened Webb’s workload considerably, but more volunteers of all ages would be more than welcome. Anyone wishing to be involved, can contact Webb on 03 302-4745. The group operates from Monday to Friday in the mornings for about an hour each day.

One new case There was one new case of Covid-19 recorded in New Zealand yesterday in managed isolation at an Auckland hotel. There are 14 active cases of the novel coronavirus and a total of 1170 cases. All of the active cases are in quarantine and there are no cases in the community. The new case is a man in his 30s who tested positive for Covid-19 during the routine testing on day three.

Mangawhai residents have seen street signs and debris flying as a tornado touched down at the coastal town north of Auckland. Library life’s the world for Jill By Sue Newman

Forty-five years is a long time in anyone’s working life, but when those years have been logged with one employer it becomes a remarkable achievement. And that’s the milestone librarian Jill Watson has just marked as a member of the Ashburton Library team, for most of those years as its manager. She arrived in 1975 with a boyfriend on her mind. The romance ended, but her job as children’s librarian didn’t. Today, Jill admits she had no intention of staying with one library for so many years, but said there was never any compelling reason to leave. “Unlike many people I didn’t see a career that involved shifting around the country. There were always other projects and opportunities coming up here,” she said. When she arrived in Ashburton the current library was just a few years old. It had opened in 1967 and was considered very modern and top-of-the-line for the day. The one thing it had that few others had – old or new – was a leaky roof. And that roof has continued to leak for all of its life, with buckets to catch drips always handy. In 2000, as a millennium project, the children’s library was extended and that meant Jill, her team and thousands of books, had to move across town to a large building on Havelock Street. “It was a huge undertaking and we had most of our book stocks out. Winter was a bit tricky, but we managed and as long as our people could find us we were happy,” she said. The library team eventually returned home to their leaky building. Over the years the library world has been one of constant change, but Jill says she’s now facing one of the most exciting and most challenging projects of her working life – planning the services that will be available in the new district library to be built in Baring Square East. She’s visited libraries across New Zealand and says Christchurch’s Turanga ranks number one as an aspirational model. Granted, Ashburton’s library will be much smaller and will have a distinctly local flavour, but in terms of the overall concept, if we end up with a mini-Turanga, Jill will be happy. “When it comes to a modern library this just blows me away.” Turanga embodies everything a library of the 21st century should be – a place for books but a place for so much more, she said. Her goal is to have the new library completely fitted out on day one. “But doing that is going to be a real challenge. It’s not just moving staff and books, it’s moving into a new world and new partnerships with the community.” Libraries are still absolutely relevant today, Jill said and while reading habits may have changed, people are still reading hard copy books, and in big numbers, she said.

“We still play an important part in people’s lives.” She’s an avid reader and admits what she reads depends on her mood. History is always a winner, but the style of novel depends on the day. Looking back, Jill says it seems a lifetime ago she entered the world of library employment as a school leaver working as a shelver in the Canterbury Public Library. She studied part-time, eventually earning two degrees. However, no matter how much you’ve learned, how much experience you have, you still have to take a deep breath before leaping into a challenge like setting up Ashburton’s new library. “I’m already starting to get nervous about planning for this because I want it to be an absolute wow moment when it opens.” Retirement is not on her radar. There are still too many exciting opportunities in the library world, she said. Life is not all about books for Jill, and when she heads home it’s to a 20 acre farmlet and a team of norwich terriers. She’s a highly respected breeder and a multiple winner in the show world. Feedback on charges for growth, development sought The way the Ashburton District Council funds its activities and services, as well as how it fairly charges for growth and development in the district are the subject of two public consultations now open for feedback until Sunday, July 26. Residents are being asked to have their say on the council’s draft Revenue & Financing Policy and the draft Development and Financial Contributions Policy, which are both proposing changes over the next three years from July 2021. The council is proposing to change the way it funds elderly persons housing, stock water management and wastewater under the Review and Financing Policy, and is also suggesting some rating boundary changes for the solid waste collection service to be extended. Consideration is also being given to whether the council should increase contributions under the draft Development and Financial Contributions Policy. Ashburton District Mayor, Neil Brown said both policies are central to setting out how the council funds the services, infrastructure and activities it provides. “We’ve established the draft ideas for how we believe rates would be charged over the next three years, as well as what people should expect to contribute when they build and connect to local infrastruc-

ture,” he said. “Now it’s up to residents to go through these proposals and tell us if we are on the right track or not. Our local services and activities affect everyone in this district, so make sure you have your say before consultation closes.” Submissions for both the draft Revenue and Financing Policy as well as the draft Development & Financial Contributions Policy can be made until 5pm, Sunday, July 26. The Ashburton Art Gallery for the first time has a photographic work on its prominent foyer wall. Seismic Shift by Adrian Hall features one picture of the Aramoana salt marsh and another of the docks at Port Chalmers. The latter features the Majestic Princess cruise ship. Not that Hall is taken with cruise ships as a beautiful subject within themselves. “They are glamorous palaces of poker machines and unlimited buffet, but in fact they have no useful purpose at all, in fact they divert people’s attention from more serious problems, and provide tax havens for people to live on six months per year,” he said. Rather the inclusion of the ship is part of the bigger picture of the landscapes not

being presented in their real-world form of horizontally, but are instead placed vertically on the wall, to add a dimension verging into the interesting, disturbing and engaging. “It changes the whole perspective on that reality, and it causes people to look again. It gives another type of tension.” Hall was pleased to see progress of the work on Friday as gallery staff installed it. The 76-year-old is based at Aramoana, where he has been for about 16 years, and is involved in the Aramoana Conservation Trust. He is a renowned New Zealand artist, having had his career as a teacher and practitioner span many decades and countries, beginning at the Royal College of Art in London in the 1960s, where he studied philosophy with Iris Murdoch and met Yoko Ono, eventually assisting her in a number of performances.

Queenstown to get $85m from Govt The Government will invest $85 million in the Queenstown economy to combat the economic fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced the funding in Queenstown yesterday. “Coming off the skifield, seeing the enthusiasm that is there amongst local residents and domestic tourists really does speak to the hope that is there but there is no denying that this region of course with our borders being closed will feel significant jobs from that.” “We also need to create other job opportunities and that’s why it is such a pleasure ... to announce $85m worth of investment into Queenstown.” The $85m will include $35m alongside the funding being put up at a local level for the town centre redevelopment, and $50m that will go into phase 1 of a project focused on arterial routes around the town centre project, Ardern said. “Construction is the second biggest employer here.” Ardern said there was “just no playbook” for responding to the pandemic. “This is only one part of the announcements that will be having an impact on Queenstown. We

know for instance the wage subsidy has made a difference here, we know even things like the tax loss carryback scheme has made a difference here ... but there is more to come. “It is about moving as quickly as we can but also investing in longterm projects.” She said it was time to think about what tourism might look like in the future. “When we do see a return of our international guests, I think our goal should be that they return to a place where we value our sustainability, but we’re also valuing the people who work in the industry.” Queenstown mayor Jim Boult said the funding would be a “major shot in the arm” for the district.

“This will create jobs, you all know that we have massive unemployment and we’ve been saying for some time if you can’t wield a knife in the kitchen, maybe you can swing a shovel on a construction site. “We can get some of this work under way in three months, it also opens the door to further projects that we are considering and looking forward to.” Tourism minister Kelvin Davis said: “We know people are doing it tough, businesses are doing it tough ... and people are relying on the here and now. “We know there’s still tough times ahead but this Government is doing as much as we can to try and alleviate some of those pressures.”

The government has also announced that $25 million has been earmarked to help tourism businesses working on conservation land. Davis and Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage have announced most tourism-related DOC concession fees will be waived from March 1, 2020 until June 30 next year. The funding will come out of the $400m Tourism Recovery Package so DOC won’t be left short-changed on funding for its conservation work. Davis said tourism businesses have been doing it tough with the borders closed to international visitors. “In addition to the billions invested through the wage subsidy

Interest rates likely to fall further Interest rates are likely to fall further and mortgage interest rates will soon fall below 2 per cent, according to Fergus McDonald, head of bonds and currency at Nikko Asset Management. “I still think there will be a further round of mortgage rate reductions,” McDonald said on a webinar. “Banks are awash with cash and they can borrow as much as they like from the Reserve Bank at 0.25 per cent,” he said. “However, they’re having trouble lending in any volume.” McDonald pointed to government measures aimed at cushioning the economy through the Covid-19 crisis, such as the loan scheme for small businesses that’s administered by the Inland Revenue Department and to the business finance guarantee scheme that’s administered by the banks. The IRD scheme has processed 88,000 applications and lent $1.48 billion with an average loan size of $16,776. The government allocated $6.25 billion to the BFGS and the latest figures available from the New Zealand Bankers’ Association show that at June 8, the banks had lent just $86 million – these numbers are expected to be updated in the next few days. McDonald suggested that the government wage subsidy schemes – the latest one runs through to the beginning of September – may be sufficient support for the businesses that needed help. But the Reserve Bank has made it clear as recently as this week that it stands ready to do whatever is necessary to support the economic recovery, he said. A fall in mortgage rates “to having a one in front of them” would also help small businesses, many

All new arrivals are supposed to be quarantined for two weeks before they’re allowed freedom of movement within NZ, although there have been some well-publicised breaches. “The border closure issue, certainly, is not easily solved in New Zealand” and will continue to impact on the tourism industry, which usually accounts for about 5 per cent of economic activity. But the export sector has been “the star performer” through the crisis, McDonald said.

Snap up some bottles to go. Despite its obstacle-course consequences for motorists, the reconfigured city centre’s dedicated cycle lane network makes sightseeing by bike a breeze – so, you might as well use them! I joined Stu Waddel from Chill for his two-hour long cycle tour which threads together a highlights reel of old and new Christchurch. And his story-telling is masterly. It’s the street art, the public art that has really redefined the city centre’s fabric with a distinct persona, from the spell-binding profusion of wall murals to the striking installations like Michael Parekowhai’s powerful bronze sculpture of a bull standing on a piano. Despite living in Christchurch, I hadn’t previously appreciated some of the hidden gems that Stu lustily incorporated into his touring route. Edging North Hagley Park in Park Terrace, Solidarity Grid is a

public art installation of 21 street lamps from 21 cities, gifted to the city as a gesture of solidarity during the recovery. Tootling through the Botanic Gardens, Stu led me to the urban treasure adjoining the Daffodil Woodland. Flora and Otto is a throne-like stone armchair and ottoman, lovingly mosaicked with broken china, crowdsourced from households during the quake. Within the city centre, we also savoured some of the new pocket precincts that have sprung up in recent years like Salt District, a hive of mixed-use buildings with boutiques and boho eateries on the ground floor, while offices and apartments rise above – once again bedecked in eye-catching mural art. The lip-smacking Little High eatery emporium is in the same ’hood. I also took a cultural and culinary meander along the City Promenade, flanking the Avon River, with Cate and Riwai Grace from Amiki Tours, dipping into the city’s multi-cultural narrative and some of the creative Maori businesses in the city centre like the Kombucha Girls at Riverside Market. And the night time kai safari is a progressive dinner, threading together a string of eateries with seasonal shared plates of local produce from fabulous venues like Inati.

It’s the street art, the public art that has really redefined the city centre’s fabric with a distinct persona, due to a spell-binding profusion of wall murals. It’s also a great way to decipher the plethora of Maori design elements that now enrich the city centre’s fabric. The glittering giant of Te Pae, the city’s glittering new convention centre, is nearing completion. Its sheer heft is being artfully softened by the 40,000 herring bone tiles, fashioned in braided river patterns, taking shape on its curvaceous façade. In spring, waka tours will be launched in the Avon River, while many of the city’s old-standards, like Punting on the Avon, the tram and gondola are about to purr back into life. New Brighton’s long-awaited hot salt-water pools have just opened. I headed for our heritage-wreathed hills, joining Nicole Ellwood from Crater Rim Walks, for a personal guided hike on the Godley Head Loop Track, complete with drinks and eats. Nicole runs a variety of bespoke tours on the walkway network, atop the caldera of this ancient shield volcano. Rest assured, it last blew 5 million years ago. From the exalted coastal promontory of Godley Head, at the eastern end of the walkway, the vista over Lyttelton Harbour’s bright cerulean water, backed by the light-tanned Banks Peninsula landscape of tussock and

basalt rock, scalloped by bays and pronged by rugged peaks, all make for a painterly landscape. But Nicole really brought the headland to life with so many anecdotes and insights as we strolled the trail. I could virtually see those mighty sailing ships hauling wide-eyed early settlers and precious British cargo past the headland to dock at Lyttelton, after three torrid months at sea. Dove-tailing with the 75th anniversary of the end of World War Two, the gun emplacements of the coastal defence battery at Godley Head have just been refreshed with some superb wall murals by Wongi Wilson, in tribute to the home guard, particularly to the women who operated the whole compound. The sirens to the past continue with a stirring relic from Captain Scott’s ill-fated polar expedition at Godley Head. One of the pre-fabricated huts that travelled to and from Antarctica on the Terra Nova, is now permanently located on the headland. Climb the stairs onto the roof balcony for even more elevated views. After the Terra Nova returned to Lyttelton, Scott’s grieving wife Kathleen actually stayed in the hut after it was first assembled in Sumner, as did Scott’s dog handler. Kathleen learned of her

husband’s death on her voyage out here. Soon after arriving, she was commissioned to sculpt his magnificent memorial statue, which you can admire on the City Promenade by Worcester Blvd. My runaway soft-adventure highlight was also on the Port Hills, at the Christchurch Adventure Park. Alongside the plethora of high-octane mountain bike and walking trails, and New Zealand’s longest chairlift, the park also boasts a four zipline adventure tour, including the nation’s highest and longest lines. I opted to do the stand-alone Long Ride, which spans 1.1km. Hurtling down to the floor of Cashmere Valley from just below the Sign of the Kiwi and flying over the pine forest canopy with an eagle’s view across the city, it’s a high-velocity, catch-yourbreath ride to remember. The rush of air is exhilarating as you charge down the line at speeds up to 100km/h! A few too many Boston Cream donuts may have weighed me down – hitting an average of 85km/h. Volunteers, the beating heart of the community

O

ne of the greatest gifts a human can give is their time. And it’s only fitting that on National Volunteer Week, we acknowledge just a small sample of the thousands of people in this district who, in some way or another, give their time through volunteer work each and every year. It’s a role – that of a volunteer, that can never really be given a true worth. Yet, in the same breath, it’s a role that society can’t do without. In every walk of life there’s an element of volunteer work that keeps the wheels turning. Even a newspaper like ours relies on the kindness of some of our contributors to pen their thoughts for you to enjoy. A small example, I know – but an example all the same. At the other end of the scale, there’s those who volunteer their time to run towards danger while everyone else is, generally, running away from it. Our emergency responders in this district are absolute gems of people. This week, perhaps more than other weeks, we need to embrace them and thank them for what they do for us each and every time the alarm goes off. The Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade and St John staff have had to bear witness to two horrific accidents within the past week. They don’t do it because they live for the thrill or the drama that comes with the role, they do it because they want to help and to make a difference and we should be extremely grateful for that. So, if you’re a volunteer out there in our community – in any variation of the term, I’m sure I can speak on behalf of everyone when we say “thank you”. Thank you for giving up your time for others. Thank you for what you have done and what you continue to do. Our district and our community runs on the work of volunteers and we don’t probably appreciate them as much as we should. Thank you.

long night of sleep and needs hydration to keep your body going. You will be surprised how much more energy you will have in the morning by drinking water first. Make it doable Set yourself a goal. Think again – do you really want to eat a smoothie for breakfast, salad for lunch and vege bowl for dinner for the rest of your life? Probably not. So, think again. What foods do you love that make you feel happy, is it a scone, is it chocolate, is it a baked potato? Include them in your diet in small amounts throughout the week, so that you won’t feel restricted and feel the need to binge on them once in a while. What we restrict we generally binge on later on. Reward yourself Well, you are on a diet, so how can you reward yourself without ruining your efforts? What are other options you can reward yourself which don’t include food? For each milestone plan a reward – go to the cinema, visit a spa, get a manicure, ... make it

special, make it about you. Most people won’t notice the change you are going through, especially at the beginning, so learn to celebrate in your own way. One extra tip is to share your goal and effort with someone close to you, it will make it more real and keep you accountable. Another great way on how to keep yourself motivated and pull through tough times is to join a group of like-minded women who walk the same journey as you. Wise up to water woes I

’ve never agreed with the one-eyed Cantab bashing of Auckland, and Aucklanders until now. They can go jump in a creek – if they had one to jump in; they’ve all dried up. The simple reason is, history is repeating itself with their lack of water and this is not new news. Their mayor, Phil Dry Cough Goff campaigned on improving Auckland’s infrastructure in 2016, and in 2017, this was the headline on May 10 – ‘Aucklanders Face Largest Water Crisis in 23 Years’. That headline was after Phil took over, and 23 years after the 1994 water crisis. I lived in Auckland in 1994. As a teacher we tirelessly taught water use, water conservation and the importance of knowing the water cycle, especially where the water you drink, and need to live on, comes from. We used to teach the children “if it’s yellow, let it mellow, if it’s brown, flush it down.” We also ran around putting bricks in cisterns at school and home. All for nothing, because at the same time the council allowed Auckland to expand at an unprecedented rate. One of the most absurd decisions was to carve up quarter-acre sections into tiny 350-500m2 plots and have two bathroom houses built on them. The removal of villas and bungalows in suburbs like Epsom and Mt Albert was relentless. Where once was a house with one toilet and shower, would now be four sections with sometimes three toilets and two showers. This meant a four-fold rates take for the council on that one piece of land. Street after street were rebuilt and at a pace that even then makes any development here

abysmally slow. At what cost? The impact has been building day in and day out. Auckland Council, before it merged with other councils, allowed unbridled urban development with no balancing in terms of infrastructure development. They deserve the latest water crisis they face now. For the mayor to now demand millions of extra litres of water to be taken from the Waikato river, whether Tainui Iwi agree or not, is an arrogant and a scathing indictment of his failure to work through a historical problem for the Queen City. The brilliance of Goff’s failure is that we can learn from it. At some point sourcing water will become a crisis for Ashburton, unless planning and decisions are made now. The cost of not protecting this district’s water source is too high. In 2018 Ashburton’s water supply lost its secure status and led to water upgrades which are in our council’s long term plan. Most of the time this type of council work is seriously boring stuff to read about. That’s why the ongoing headlines about Auckland should shake us awake enough to make sure we take an interest in the council plans. Recently council discussions on water meters was reported on. I think it’s a no-brainer. As a school we have had a water meter for almost 10 years. As soon as it was connected,

the council contacted us to say the school was losing an average of 20-25 cubic metres of water a day! We had serious problems with leaks in a number of places, and that water was just pouring out of our pipes without us knowing. Now we can detect a leak straight away as we know our daily use on average. We also know what a small leak looks like compared to a large one. The simple action of installing a meter has saved thousands of litres of water and dollars.

Now is the time to get behind council initiatives and accept the cost that comes with having access to clean, unrestricted water. We have already had headlines about our water, let’s not make the mistakes Dorklanders have made. Peter Livingstone is the principal of Tinwald School. LETTERS Words matter In the wake of the March 15 terror attack in Christchurch, this community held a vigil, expressing our horror, and condemning violence fuelled by bigotry. Phill Hooper, as MC, made a statement that we should call out racism whenever and wherever we find it. At the conclusion of the event I personally thanked Mr Hooper for making that assertion, which had gone unsaid by the other speakers. His opinion piece, Be like Tret-

is! (Ashburton Guardian, June 19, 2020) displays a concerningly disappointing move away from that ideal. In it Mr Hooper suggests that we should learn to co-exist alongside those who might see our lives as less important than theirs. Worse, he goes on to mislead with statements and figures that stifle the reality of the situation that black Americans have faced for centuries. He paraphrases the slogan All Lives Matter, which is broadly seen as criticism of the Black Lives Matter movement, and

which implies that all lives are equally at risk. He follows this up with death by police shooting statistics, ignoring the demographics of the three groups listed, attempting to show that “the cops in the US certainly aren’t biased”. On average, black Americans are 2.5 times as likely as white Americans to be shot and killed by police officers. In Minnesota, where George Floyd was murdered, black Americans are nearly four times as likely to be killed by law enforcement. Sadly, those figures are echoed

here in New Zealand, where Maori and Pasifika are disproportionately represented in the justice system, and are more likely to suffer ethnicity-related discrimination. Those statistics gave rise to the current Human Rights Commission Give Nothing to Racism campaign. Words matter. Beginning the steps towards retirement A

sk anyone who’s retired and they will say to start saving for retirement as soon as you can! Even if it seems a long way off, it pays to start planning for retirement as early as possible. How much we need to save will depend on our own circumstances, but the sooner we start, the better the position we’ll be in when we eventually stop working. While NZ Super (the government pension) can help us get by, it’s our own savings that will help to make retirement fun and comfortable.

How much will I need to retire? Everyone’s retirement needs are different. To work this out, start by thinking about how long you will have in retirement, what sort of lifestyle you will want, and where you will live.

How many years will I have in retirement? We’re living longer these days. On average, 80 per cent of 65-year-old men can now expect to live until they’re 90, and 65-year-old women until they’re 94. In the future, we’ll probably live even longer. These figures are based on the latest Statistics New Zealand cohort life tables. Let’s say you plan to retire at 65. You need to save or have another plan to provide the income you want for 25 years or more, and make sure your money lasts as long as you do.

What sort of retirement lifestyle do I want? What will your cost of living be in retirement? Some costs may go up (like healthcare) while others (such as education, clothing, housing, work-related travel) may go down. If you have children, they will probably be financially independent. You also need to think about what your goals might be in retirement – travelling to new places? Joining clubs, going out to dinner and shows?

Will I live in my own home or rent? If you rent, you’ll need more savings to cover the cost – but on the other hand, you won’t have money tied up in a home. However, owning the place you live in, debt-free, will reduce the risk of rent increases or being asked to find a new place to live. You’ll have more control over your finances, but you will have to take care of

maintenance, insurance and rates. Being mortgage-free by retirement is a great goal to aim for. The reason many people currently in retirement are able to manage financially is because they no longer have the burden of mortgage repayments.

Take basics into account, such as insurance, maintaining the house and car, or replacing a major appliance. Build in some funds for the unexpected. Residential Care Subsidy – How it works for you

I

f you need long-term residential care in a hospital or resthome, you may be able to get a Residential Care Subsidy from the Ministry of Health. Important information: This subsidy helps with the cost of care. It’s paid directly to the hospital or resthome by the Ministry of Health. Who can get it You may be able to get a Residential Care Subsidy if you are aged either: • 65 or older • under 65 and have a partner, or • 50-64 and single with no dependent children • are assessed as needing long-term residential care in a hospital or resthome • need this care for an indefinite length of time • are receiving contracted care services. It may also depend on: • any money or assets you and your partner (if you have one) have • how much you and your partner (if you have one) earn. Asset limits If you’re 50-64 and single with no dependent children, you’ll automatically

Community Services Card creating cheaper visits to the doctor C

hanges to Community Services Card benefits mean Community Service card holders will pay less each time they visit their doctor. If a SuperGold card has CSC on the back of it you can use it for health services as well as the SuperGold discounts – meaning lower fees for general practice visits for health, injury and more. Many medical practices are now offering lower fees for enrolled Community Service Card holders, and many more are joining as time goes on. It’s important to make sure you always carry your card to make it easy to get all the benefits on offer, especially when visiting your doctor. The card can also be used for any child in your care who is under 18, while all children under the age of 13 are already free. If you haven’t yet got a Community Services Card, it’s worth checking if you can get one. ou’re eligible to withdraw all your KiwiSaver funds when you reach the age of eligibility (currently 65). If you joined KiwiSaver before July 1, 2019 and were aged between 60-64 you would have been locked into KiwiSaver for five years. Being locked in meant you could not withdraw your funds when you were 65. It’s going to hurt, and he knows it, but Ashburton jockey Jason Laking can’t wait to get back to business today when he jumps back in the saddle for the first time since lockdown. Like his fellow jockeys across the country, Laking has been champing at the bit to get back out on the track and return to doing what he loves, after almost three months on the sideline due to Covid-19. Thoroughbred racing returns to the South Island today with a bumper 11-race card from Riccarton Park in Christchurch, and Laking will be one of a number of Mid Canterbury interests involved in the meeting with half a

dozen rides across the day. But there was no way the talented hoop was going to downplay just how tough it has been to get to this point, and how tough the first day back competitive riding will be. “It’s been a struggle to get those last few kilograms off, that’s for sure,” he said on Thursday night. “The first five kgs came off pretty easily, but the next five have been tough – I’ve just been in the spa and managed to drop another kg and a half there just in fluids really.” After such an extensive period not really having to keep a close eye on his weight, getting back to being race ready has been a process, but at the end of the day it’s all part of the job.

Laking mainly uses the spa as a way to keep the extra trim off, but he also spends plenty of time running in sweat gear to help, especially leading into race meetings. Jockeys are fined or suspended if they present themselves to a race meeting over their advertised weight. When he does throw his leg over his first ride today, it won’t be going in completely fresh. Alongside with his work for Midlands, Laking travels to Christchurch multiple times each week in the early hours of the morning to ride trackwork, which has helped get the fitness levels up. “There’s getting yourself fit, then becoming trackwork fit –

but you can’t really get race fit until you’re out there doing it. “I’d imagine I’ll be blowing a bit after my rides this week, just until the body gets used to it again. “It’s pretty taxing out there and I don’t think people realise just how much it can take out of you.” With a young family at home, Laking said he’d enjoyed being able to spend a bit more time around the house over the past few months, but was now ready to get back to work and hopefully start putting some winners on the board. “That first winner, when it comes – it will feel pretty good, I reckon.” Laking headed into lockdown with 15 wins on the board for the season and was well on track to

surpass his best season tally for a number of seasons of 19. He’s still hopeful he can get there too. “It gets a bit harder during the winter to get rides because I ride at a high weight, but I’m quite excited about a few of the rides I’ve got coming up, there’s some really nice ones there to look forward to.” And what about today, can the Ashburton hoop make it a successful return to the track? “I’ve got quite a nice book of rides, I thought. “Blair Flight (race eight) was very good in a jump out last week and I’ve got a bit of time for a first starter, Gogo Mr Joe (race five). “He should win one pretty quickly, I think.” Racing fields - P30-31

Grand slammin’ talent

If you haven’t already, make note of the name Diego Quispe-Kim. The Mid Canterbury tennis sensation has continued an inevitable ascent to the top, as he settles in to a grind of winter training on the court. However the plaudits have not stopped flowing, with the teen named Outstanding Junior Sportsperson at the Mid Canterbury Sports Awards earlier this month. “It felt very special because of the koru as the trophy,” he said. It is the latest in a long list of accomplishments as the 14-year-old has emerged as the best in the country for his age. He was a New Zealand representative at the World Junior Teams event in Malaysia and was also named in the under-17 Canterbury team. Winning has become an infectious habit for Quispe-Kim. Over the past year he has had several tournament wins, both in New Zealand and abroad, including standout tournament wins at the 2019 Rod Laver Championship under-14 event and the Kiwi Indoor Junior Championship. “I only lost six games in the whole tournament (Kiwi Indoor Junior Championships),” he said. “I didn’t drop a set.” Over a two-week stretch in July, QuispeKim won both the Rod Laver under-14 singles after also clinching the lead-in event in Australia over some of the best junior players in the Asia-Pacific region. Due to Covid-19, Quispe-Kim won’t get an opportunity to replicate his feats across the Tasman this year. He is targeting both the under-18 National Junior Championships in December and next year’s Junior Davis Cup. He says training alongside his father and

It also helps being a self-described “competitive” sport-loving teenager to help drive him towards success. Originally from Christchurch, he first tried his hand at the sport by the age of three by virtue of a family friend. As he hones his skill set under the helm of Tennis New Zealand’s high performance department, his results indicate a lethal all-round game which has left many op-

ponents floundering in his wake. He feels his forehand is a key aspect of his arsenal after years of watching Spanish superstar and fellow left-hander Rafael Nadal and Argentine grand slam winner Juan Martín del Potro. “I mostly stay on the baseline, that’s where I feel most comfortable,” he said. “I like Juan Martin del Potro because of his big forehand, and he’s from South America like my dad.” Quispe-Kim’s father is originally from Peru, while his mother hails from South Ko-

rea. He acknowledges that his volleys are one area of his game where he wanted to focus on. “I don’t practice volleys too much. But you need to volley a lot, especially if you want to finish points off easily in a game. “You just have to keep training; train, train, train and stay positive.” It is an approach which has reaped rewards for the Mid Canterbury prodigy as he climbs towards a professional tennis dream.

An elite tennis coach who has mentored some of the game’s biggest names believes local teen Diego Quispe-Kim has the talent to shine on the world stage. Tennis New Zealand’s high performance director Christophe Lambert was in Ashburton this week where he worked alongside the young tennis wunderkind. A focus on the technical nuances and game strategies were the focus during a two-hour session at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre on Wednesday. Before Lambert was appointed to the high performance role earlier this year, he had been Tennis New Zealand’s national coach for two years. The 14-year-old has been on Lambert’s radar since he first became involved with Tennis New Zealand. “I’ve been following what Diego has been doing because he is one of our national champions,” he said. “Diego has raw talent which makes things very interesting.” The French expat has more than 25 years of high performance coaching experience and

has schooled the likes of threetime Grand Slam winner Andy Murray. He also coached current US Open champion Bianca Andreescu in 2016, only a year before the

Canadian turned professional. Quispe-Kim’s prowess on court has seen the Ashburton College pupil collect a plethora of trophies both locally and nationally. He has received coaching from

Lambert previously, however this was the first time Lambert had travelled to Mid Canterbury especially. Lambert said the youngster had the potential to exceed not just in

New Zealand, but internationally. “He could do very well in New Zealand and could do very well on the world stage,” he said. “The issue is we need to provide him with a good environment so he can thrive and so he can do well at the international level.” Although Quispe-Kim was blessed with a prodigious skill, Lambert said there was still plenty of work to do around the technical and tactical elements of the sport. “He is a young kid,” he said. “He’s got natural talent and a good feel for the game. “He will also need to improve his physicality too as he probably won’t be a tall player.” He added that the mental side of the game will also be a consideration during Quispe-Kim’s development. “At the beginning of your career, he needs to be better in every area to reach the next level. “He’s got something which many other players don’t have and that’s the love of the game and he’s got the talent. “That’s something you can’t teach and you can’t coach. “Now he’s got to learn the other sides outside of that.”

he captain’s armband is a funny old thing. Some are born to it. Others grow into it. There’s a few who grab it willingly, but are found wanting on the big stage when it really, really counts. And some seem doomed to endure a horrible streak of bad luck to go along with the honour of leading their team-mates into battle. Weird stuff happens, too. Like last Sunday, with the two opposing skippers in the Super Rugby Aotearoa at the Cake Tin. Neither Dane Coles nor Codie Taylor were expecting to be thrust into that position, even though they are clearly the two best hookers in the country, and are competing for the starter’s black jersey. The weird thing? These two blokes both went to some little school in the Horowhenua, just a couple of years apart. But they say there’s no such thing as co-incidence. Taylor was fulfilling the captain’s role (rather well, too, it should be noted) because Scott

Barrett looks like he’s fallen smack bang into that ‘bad luck’ category. Named Crusaders captain at the start of the season, it seemed to be an inspired choice, considering he hadn’t worn the armband since playing for the Under 13s in Taranaki. The Crusaders, usually the slow starters of the competition, charged out of the blocks, boasting a 5-1 record with only the Sharks in front of them, when Covid dropped its deadly cargo. But just before the re-jigged New Zealand-only competition began, Barrett suffered a ‘friendly fire’ injury, in a Crusader v Crusader pre-season game, damaging the plantar fascia ligament in his foot. Locks need to use their feet, quite often, with a great deal of pressure applied. So it’s the sideline for Barrett, unfortunately for the whole season. One or two scribes had quietly pencilled him in for future All Blacks leadership duties too. There is one captain who played on with a broken foot, several games in fact, including

one of those Rugby World Cup final things. But he’s out there on a planet of his own, and pretty much transcends any conversations about ‘normal’ skippers. From the first category, born to it, you’d be chucking in the likes of Graham Mourie, Buck Shelford, Wilson Whineray, Brian Lochore, and Sean Fitzpatrick. Kieran Read will probably eventually fit into that lot, after a bit of history has passed; at the moment it still seems a bit like he was operating in Richie’s shadow. Toddy was absolutely a legendary leader of the Crusaders in his time, but couldn’t quite transfer that to the All Blacks stage, nor unfortunately the coaching career later on. Reuben Thorne? Apparently, on a still night, the residents around

Lancaster Park can still hear the strains of ‘Reuben Thorne, Reuben Thorne, Reuben Thorne’ rustling through the tumbleweeds. That southern man, him of the quivering lower lip? The one who, when New Zealand was in the grip of an energy crisis, magnanimously told the nation he was turning down his underfloor heating a couple of notches? Not quite the common-man touch. Gary Whetton had a go for a while, but he was only ever leading the clique of Auks in the side. The point of it all? The most important captain of all is, as per usual, the All Blacks skipper. And the current one, Sam Cane, has a huge question mark hanging over him, and that’s the dreaded injury stick. After Richie retired, Cane became a regular member of the ABs’ leadership team, and was a regular starter, but his form was often lost due to head injuries (and he was gathering a collection of yellow cards as well). But it was in 2018 when many thought they’d seen the last of Cane on a rugby field, when he

After gathering a good head of pre-season steam, Methven is looking content as they join the Watters Cup battle. Last year’s beaten finalists will be ensuring any advantage pays off as they get their first competition crack at home today against Celtic. Coaching staff spoke about the first round bye week as a positive, and now the side has two warm-up games safely under their belts. If it is perceived as luck of the draw for the team, motivation should also bolster the team’s attitude after being pipped in extra time during last year’s Watters Cup finale. The team looked in exceptional touch during their two pre-season hitouts. They accounted for Prebbleton 4026 in the Busch-Lemon Shield game a fortnight ago and backed it up a week later with a 24-14 win over Mackenzie in Fairlie. However, the side should be wary of the opposition today who themselves wont be down on motivation after being stunned by Hampstead 25-19 in last week’s Watters Cup opener. Although Celtic have some freshfaced newcomers among their 2020 group, they will be all the better for last week’s game and the more experienced heads should have no problem in consolidating the side for battle today. Execution should be the focus for the visitors, after several chances went begging last week when they had a depleted Hampstead on the rack. Both winners from last weekend face off in Hinds today. Fresh off their historic win at home last week, Hampstead will be looking

But already this year, Cane is missing in action as the Aotearoa comp kicks into gear. Maybe, with all the ructions going on around the world, there’ll be no international rugby at all this season. That might just be a very good thing for the man charged with leading our top team into action, coming back in 2021, a year to recover properly and start again with a clean sheet and a rejuvenated body. The fans do like to see their captain actually on the field of play.

Mid Canterbury United will be banking on strong local support as they knuckle down for a crucial game in Ashburton today. The club hosts St Albans Shirley in Mainland’s Canterbury Championship League, in what stands as a pivotal game for the seventh-placed United. The Mid Cantabrians’ campaign was waylaid in Christchurch last week when Universities put seven past them. A week is a long time in football however and while a step up to the CCL grade is already offering its challenges, it is a long time since United dropped consecutive games. Their opponents currently sit fourth on the CCL ladder with a 1-1-1 record over the first three weeks. The Christchurch club is coming off a 2-2 draw at Burwood last week. The reserves will also be in action from 12.30pm in what serves as a curtain-raiser for the senior game. The budding United contingent will again undertake another tough battle against more experienced counterparts. Senior men’s division 2 is set for an enthralling showdown as Methen do battle with Ferrymead Bays in a top-of-the-table clash. Only one goal in the PD column separates the two teams as the two clubs head in today’s game at Ferrymead Park locked up on seven competition points apiece. A battle between Methven’s offensive clout and Ferrymead’s defensive strength appears to be the big talking point. Methven have been devastating on attack over the first three weeks of football, however the side have leaked eight goals compared to Ferrymead’s two. United’s division 4 side also travel up State Highway 1 today where the competition contenders meet Nomads United Blue in Harewood. The visitors are unbeaten after three games, while the Nomads are coming off a stinging 4-0 loss at home to Waimakariri. Methven will be counting on home advantage today in division 6 as the team strives for its first win of the season against Hornby at the Methven Domain.

World Cup ‘massive’ for New Zealand Australia and New Zealand have won the right to host the 2023 Women’s World Cup football tournament by a comfortable margin after a vote by the FIFA Council. Their joint proposal beat a rival bid from Colombia to host the tournament which is being expanded to 32 teams. Japan, who had also put forward a bid to stage the event, pulled out on Monday after they were ranked below the joint bid by world governing body FIFA’s evaluation report. The report highlighted the infrastructure and organisational advantages of the Australia/New Zealand bid which FIFA believed would make for a commercially successful tournament. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said New Zealand was honoured to have been selected as co-hosts. “It will be a historic tournament of firsts that will create a profound and enduring legacy for women’s football in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond. “We are looking forward to delivering the best ever FIFA Women’s World Cup™ in both nations, one that will elevate the women’s game and inspire women and girls around the world.” NZF President and FIFA Council Member, Johanna Wood, believes Australia-New Zealand will deliver a tournament the likes of which has not been seen before. “Australia and New Zealand will not only host a FIFA Women’s World Cup that is the largest tournament ever run, but it will also be a catalyst for ensuring the development of women’s football continues in the Asia-Pacific region and globally. “Our two nations have worked together to deliver an exceptional, historic bid and I would like to

thank FIFA and the whole football family for giving us this opportunity. “The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 will bring us all together in a celebration of our shared loved of football.” Football Ferns’ captain, Ali Riley, believes placing players’ needs first will produce great benefits for the tournament. “As players, we have been in close contact with both FIFA and NZF to develop a tournament which will enable players to deliver their very best on the field. “To lead the Football Ferns in a home FIFA Women’s World Cup in New Zealand will be truly special and inspire a new generation of Football Ferns.” There had been media reports that the vote could be tight with UEFA’s European representatives backing Colombia but in the end the margin of victory was wide with Australia and New Zealand gaining 22 votes to Colombia’s 13. The tournament will be held in July and August and New Zealand will host four of the eight pools and also one of the quarter-finals and a semi-final. The opening game of the tournament will be held at Eden Park. The 2019 World Cup in France was hailed as a watershed for global interest in the women’s game and FIFA President Gianni Infantino personally drove the campaign to increase the field to 32 teams from 24 for 2023. Infantino had also expressed a preference for the successful Australia/New Zealand bid during the FIFA Council meeting. Colombia, who were hoping to become the first South American nation to hold the tournament, were disappointed at the decision

but vowed to keep fighting to host a major FIFA event. “We wanted the seat of the Women’s World Cup 2023 for Colombia and we gave everything to get it,” the country’s sports minis-

try wrote on twitter. “We will work more strongly to bring another World Cup to Colombia. With the efforts of all, women’s soccer (here) ... will keep growing.”

Long-awaited home game for Crusaders Crusaders fans will get to see their team in the flesh for the first time since lockdown this Sunday afternoon, when they host the Chiefs. Lockdown and the cancellation of the regular Super Rugby season meant Christchurch had only been able to host two games so far this year. Crusaders boss Colin Mansbridge said 13,000 seats had already been sold at the 17,000 capacity stadium and was confident the remainder would be snapped up by their rugby-starved fans. “The best seats have gone but there are still some available and you know quite often we can sell later. “And I think people in Christchurch, especially with the Crusaders, can be a little bit complacent sometimes. “But yeah, I think it’s time to get on and buy a ticket if you haven’t got one yet.” Mansbridge was hoping the early 3.35pm kick-off would encourage plenty of families to come along. “There’s a lot less club sport on during that time of the day so the Sunday’s a little bit freer. “And so we’ve just noticed across the super comp, that on the Sunday afternoon there’s a lot more excitement and you can get home at a reasonable hour and not necessarily have to walk through a chilly evening.” And it wasn’t just this weekend’s match that was attracting a lot of interest, with 10,000 tickets already sold for the home clash with traditional rivals the Blues, happening in two weeks. Mansbridge said the ticket sales were a sight for sore eyes, with all Super Rugby franchises left licking their wounds after a massive cut in gate takings due to lockdown.
