Councillors fire up over roading By Sue Newman

A major work project on Ashburton’s Chalmers Avenue might be close to completion, but the end result is nothing short of a disgrace, Russell Ellis said. At Thursday’s Ashburton District Council service delivery meeting, the councillor told staff that the state of the road surface was an embarrassment to the council. “If you call this completed to a satisfactory level, I’d be very disappointed,” he said. Diane Rawlinson agreed. “People are asking me, ‘is this the final seal?’ If this is a reflection of our work, our reputation will not be upheld,” she said. The Chalmers Avenue project saw sections of road dug up to lay pipes three metres underground and is due for completion at the end of this month. Reinstatement of the road had been completed last week, said council projects and operations manager Shyamal Ram, but a practical completion had not yet been issued to the contractor. “After it was completed we had heavy rain and that resulted in potholes and we went back to ACL (contractors) to fill those

potholes,” he said. In the spring another coat of seal will be applied to the road and the job will not be considered completed and handed over to
the council for 12 months to allow for any failures to be remedied by the contractor. While Ellis was far from happy with the current state of the
road and the answers he was given, Ram said he and the roading team were satisfied with where it was at within the contract because practical completion had
not yet been issued. Chalmers Avenue was not the only road to fail the councillor satisfaction test after a reseal following the laying of underground pipes. Harrison Street was another good example of a road surface not being returned to its pre-dig quality, Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel said. “We are not meeting the expectations of the community,” she said. Service delivery group manager Neil McCann said the problem with reinstating a section of road that had been excavated to three metres was that the reinstated part was new while the areas of road on either side were a different quality because they could be quite old. “Yes, we have issues, but we’re doing the best to try to address these and contracts such as Chalmers Avenue have a 12-month maintenance period. For the next 12 months the road still, effectively, belongs to ACL.”

Ashburton police have turned to the nation’s television audience in a bid to help crack the case of the district-wide crime spree that occurred in May. In the latest episode of the popular television show Police Ten 7, the story of the crime spree that occurred across the district in the early hours of May 24 featured. “We haven’t locked anyone up for it yet and we have hit a bit of brick wall with the case so that is why we have decided to do the story,” Detective Craig Clare said. Spanning five hours, the crime spree began at the Z petrol station
in Tinwald, where a person who was travelling in a stolen green Toyota Prado smashed open the glass door to the store and stole a large quantity of cigarettes. The offender then travelled south to Hinds, while being followed by a local security firm vehicle. In Hinds, the offender used their vehicle to ram the security firm’s vehicle. From there, the vehicle carried on to Mayfield, where a police car pulled in behind the stolen vehicle. The vehicle was then reversed into the police car, ramming it and disabling it.

“It was a very cops and robbers situation,” Clare said. Mt Somers was the next destination for the offender, where the situation took a more serious turn. The stolen vehicle was parked behind the Mt Somers General Store and the offender exited the vehicle and entered a nearby house, turning on lights and rummaging through drawers until he was able to find a set of keys. The first stolen vehicle was set alight, destroying it, the carport it was parked under and a nearby shed and vegetation as the offender drove off after stealing
another vehicle. Clare said it was a very distressing situation for the young couple in the house and that the decision to set the vehicle alight was a dangerous decision. “The fire is the most alarming part as it could’ve led to serious injury or death,” he said. The offender then travelled along the inland scenic route in the second stolen vehicle to Christchurch and has set it alight after a short pursuit near the Christchurch International Airport that police abandoned due to the dangerous driving of the offender. The green Toyota Prado that
was used at the beginning of the crime spree was stolen in Methven between 1pm and 3pm, May 23, and Clare said he was hopeful that someone may have seen the offender driving the vehicle in the township at that time and may be able to identify that person. Police believe the offender to be a caucasian male who is approximately 6ft tall, he was wearing black pants with Athletics Team and 23 in white writing on the left leg. If anyone has any information, they are asked to call 0800 1074636 and to press the number five on their phone.

Heritage trail could be tourism winner By Sue Newman

Ashburton is sitting on a tourism gold mine that could boost visitor numbers and put the district on the map as a place that recognises and celebrates its history, says Heritage New Zealand chief executive Andrew Coleman. “You’ve got a fantastic portfolio of heritage and you have a great opportunity in Ashburton and the wider region to protect what you have and I urge you to develop a heritage trail,” he said. While the district might not be unique in New Zealand in terms of its heritage, it was much further ahead than many places in recognising and celebrating what it had, Coleman said. “I implore you to make the most of what you have here.” Coleman was in Ashburton for the unveiling of the district’s seventh Blue Plaque used to mark a heritage site. Thursday’s unveiling was on the Ashburton Courthouse. His visit was his second this month with the first to the Allen’s Road Chinese market garden site to celebrate its recognition by Heritage New Zealand as a significant archaeological site. He congratulated the council for the role it had played in protecting that site which has now become New Zealand’s seventh post-1900 site to receive an archaeological declaration. “In heritage terms – if you drive up Allens Road you see some sheds and people might call them old, derelict and falling down, but
the archaeological declaration is more about what’s under the ground. Like most of New Zealand’s history, it’s largely under the ground,” Coleman said. When he travelled around the district, it became apparent that there were many important historic sites and Ashburton was leading the country in recognising these with the blue plaque project, he said. Like the rest of New Zealand, however, the Ashburton District could also count its history in lost sites and buildings, and that meant it was important to recognise what was still there and could still be protected, Coleman said. If the district developed and promoted a heritage trail it would give travellers another reason to stop and spend time in the area, he said. When he checked out information brochures, Coleman said there were plenty extolling the district’s recreational activities, but nothing about its heritage. “I want the community to, please, recognise what you have. A heritage trail brochure needs to be promoted. When you have such a good portfolio you need to tell people arriving into your district that it’s a great heritage trail place. Stop and explore it.” Historic Places Mid Canterbury chairwoman Julie Luxton said that a heritage brochure was produced before the Canterbury earthquakes, but it would need significant updating. The basics, however, were still there but it would be timely to have it updated, she said.

For the first time since sweeping gun law reforms were passed following the March 15 terror attack in Christchurch, Mid Canterbury firearms owners will be able to take part in the gun buyback scheme in the district. A collection event is being held today at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre from 10am till 3pm. Sub-area supervisor Senior Sergeant Leigh Jenkins said the events are not run by local police, but that he would be visiting to get a look at the process. The Ashburton College drama class would be running a sausage sizzle as well, he said. There is no estimate for numbers of owners expected, though last Saturday eight events were held nationwide, and a total of 692 firearm owners were processed, handing in a total of 1055 prohibited firearms and 2315 parts and accessories. The total amount compensated to firearms owners was $1,757,414. Three more events are scheduled for the wider Mid Canterbury area. Initially three events were scheduled for Rakaia, but that has been changed to one event each for Rakaia and Methven. The Rakaia event will be held at the Rakaia Community Hall on Mackie Street on August 10 and the Methven event will be held at the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall at 160 Main Street on August 11. Both events will be held from 10am till 3pm. Firearms owners should complete the online notification form on the police website. When they come to a collection event, they should bring photo ID, bank account number, firearms licence (if applicable), online notification reference number, all prohibited parts – cleared of all ammunition – and any other firearm/s or parts they wish to hand into police for destruction.

Mid Canterbury mothers have had the chance to voice their concerns that a members bill proposed by National MP Louise Upston that would extend anti-natal hospital stays to a minimum of three days is not enough. Upston held a talk on Friday with mothers at The Stork Network in Ashburton, which was organised by Stork Network education manager Zalie Doyle who had initially replied to Upston on social media about the proposed bill. “I decided to be a keyboard warrior and put my thoughts in because I thought it wasn’t good enough,” Doyle said. Mothers are eligible for a minimum hospital stay of 48 hours post-birth by their choice and Upston’s 3 Day Postnatal Stay Amendment Bill would extend that to three days. Doyle said while that was a great step, she believed there was more need to have better care and attention following their release from hospital. This includes access to more professional staff, such as lactation specialists to assist with breastfeeding, and increasing

funding to allow fathers to spend more time at home in the weeks and months following a birth. “Anything to support fathers would be great,” she said. Doyle said many fathers are being forced to use up all their avail-
able annual leave and sick leave just to be with their partners for two to three weeks following the birth. A small group of mothers attended the talk and agreed with the sentiment, saying that with-
out their partners being there to care for them, they would not have been able to look after themselves. “If my husband wasn’t there, there would have been no way I would’ve eaten, I wouldn’t have
taken my medication, I was just so focused on caring for my child,” one mother said. Doyle said difficulty in accessing lactation specialists was an issue for mothers, especially with such a focus placed on mothers to breastfeed as a first option. Upston said being able to go around the country and meet mothers, midwives and groups like The Stork Network were important to crafting the bill. The network is a new parenting education and children’s retail store in Allenton. Doyle said a survey of parents found they were more concerned about their partner not having time off work to support them in the weeks following childbirth, and the issue of post-natal depression, which up to 20 per cent of mothers encountered.

A popular event is about to return to the streets of Methven. A rail jam event is set to return to the fold early next month and play a part in an action-packed weekend known as White Out. The snow festival is set to run over the course of August 9 to 10 and the event looks set to bring some vibrancy into the skifield township for the weekend with some notable bands performing over the course of both nights at both pre and post-parties. E-scooters could be operating on a trial basis in Selwyn from December. In May the Selwyn District Council agreed to a six-month trial of Lime Scooters in Rolleston once safety concerns and other issues had been addressed. Group manager environmental and regulatory services, Tim Harris, said the council continued to work with Lime Scooters to finalise more specific proposals for Selwyn which address the concerns of the council. The council has also received another proposal from Lava Scooters and are working with the Christchurch company to make sure their proposal addresses all of council’s concerns. Harris said the main focus has been to the development of potential speed restricted areas in high volume pedestrian areas, geo-fencing to restrict use of the e-scooters in areas such as the State Highway 1 and the enhanced use of education. “If all of the issues discussed at the May 2019 council meeting have been addressed to the satisfaction of the council, which will also include amendments to the current Traffic and Parking Bylaw, e-scooters could be operating for a trial period beginning December 2019,” Harris said. The proposal by Lime was to introduce 200 scooters to the Rolleston town area that would make Rolleston the fifth place in New Zealand and the first rural town to allow the scooters.

ussell Langdon has not given up on seeing New Zealand’s iconic blue duck return to his birdlife sanctuary at Lagmhor. He has encountered blow after blow in seeking re-admission to the whio breeding programme since being removed from it in 2010. Awarded the QSM in 2006 for services to conservation, Langdon once successfully bred many blue ducks at his Riverbridge Native Species Trust, which borders the south branch of the Ashburton River. But a treasured breeding pair were separated when a big snow crushed their aviary and the female escaped and never returned. The Department of Conservation subsequently removed Langdon from its breeding programme. He has since constructed new aviaries and introduced snow-proofing measures, so thinks he should be considered once again, but feels like he has been endlessly knocking on bureaucrats’ doors. The latest chapter in his efforts was the most disheartening of all, when in response to a letter from Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon outlining his concerns, Minister
of Conservation Eugenie Sage outlined the department’s belief that Langdon had not followed instructions on how to effectively care for the blue duck pair, meaning the female “died of starvation”. Thus the department did not believe Mr Langdon was “a suitable candidate” for the programme, she said. “The department is unaware of any change in circumstance that would make Mr Langdon a suitable candidate now, however, it is happy for Mr Langdon to supply evidence that can prove otherwise,” Sage said in the letter to Falloon. Langdon not only disagrees with the department’s take on what happened to the female duck, but also on how easy it makes it sound for him to prove himself as a suitable candidate. He has been knocking on doors, not only with the department, but also with the blue duck co-ordination centre and found no joy in trying to make headway with his application to get blue ducks back to the 8.3 hectare sanctuary. His modern and secure aviaries lead into extensive outdoor lakes and ponds, surrounded by thousands of native trees and shrubs. Thorough pest trapping is con-
ducted ensuring safe breeding conditions with no stoats, rats, ferrets or feral cats around. The land is protected by a QEII covenant and visited by touring ornithologists from around the world. It has been praised by
conservationists both locally and nationally as an oasis of bird habitat on the Canterbury Plains. Langdon is a member of the brown teal recovery programme, a species even more rare than the blue duck. He believes blue duck
would complement the sanctuary perfectly and even attract visitors to Mid Canterbury. Whio are considered a waterfowl species iconic to New Zealand and feature on the country’s $10 note. Langdon successfully breeds a wide range of other species at the sanctuary, including little owls, kakariki and weta, while the wetlands there provide habitat for many wild species such as pied stilts, spoonbills and marsh crake. Another point Sage made in her letter, was that the quota of whio required for release in the South Island was already being met with more than enough capacity at breeding facilities at Orana Wildlife Park and the Isaac Conservation and Wildlife Trust. However, Langdon believes the more efforts under way the better and it will all help in the end towards seeing blue duck return to healthy numbers in the wild. Today aged 88, he has not given up on one day seeing blue duck return to his sanctuary, but thinks it might be something his grandsons will have to continue to pursue. As members of Riverbridge, they had been helping him in his work. “It’s over to the next generation,” he said.

Drunk-driver jailed for friend’s death
Two men arrested in drugs bust

A fleeing drunk and high driver who caused a late-night, highspeed crash that killed a teenage girl, before he ran away from the scene, was yesterday jailed for three-and-a-half years. Darrin Ray Stewart was driving on Gloucester St in Christchurch on November 16 last year when he smashed into a school building, killing Alexia Chrissy-Marie Noble-Hazelwood, 18. As his four passengers – all friends who had begged him to slow down – lay dead and injured, Stewart ran off and escaped police. Officers later caught up with Stewart and he was charged with manslaughter, reckless driving causing injury, and failing to stop and ascertain injury. There was a packed public gallery for yesterday’s sentencing at the High Court in Christchurch. Noble-Hazelwood’s family members and friends wore white T-shirts with her photograph and “RIP Alexia” emblazoned on the front, while others held framed photos and booklets of her. Stewart, a Hornby scaffolder, stood in court to issue a direct apology to Noble-Hazelwood’s family and friends. He wept as he said how “very sorry” he was for what happened. “It hurts me every day,” he said. He is disgusted by his actions,

Family spokesman Denis Gempton called Stewart’s actions that night as “foolish and utterly cowardly”, especially when he “ran away … and left them for dead”. “You’ve given this family a life sentence of sadness.” Gempton hoped others would
learn from the tragedy and the dangers of drugs, alcohol and dangerous driving. He also hoped that Stewart would “take your punishment for this crime like a man” and that he would eventually sort his life out. The court heard how Stewart had been out socialising with friends that night. He later admitted drinking 11 bottles of bourbon mixers and smoking cannabis. But he got behind the wheel of his Mitsubishi Diamante and drove his friends around town. As he left a Linwood petrol station, a police car flashed their lights for him to pull over.
Stewart took off down Linwood Ave at high speeds. There was a short pursuit before the officer abandoned it on safety grounds. Stewart’s speeds were estimated at being somewhere between 110-160km/h through the 50km/h city streets. His friends begged him to stop. “Shut the f*** up,” he told one mate. He narrowly missed one parked car, sped through a red light, but as he approached a school, he lost control. The car veered to the wrong side of the road, hit a kerb, became airborne, and crashed through a metal fence and into the side of a school. Two unrestrained passengers were thrown out of the vehicle. Noble-Hazelwood’s body was found approximately 10m away. She died instantly. Another passenger suffered a broken leg, broken arm, and laceration to head, while all of the others were also injured. After freeing himself from the car, Stewart jumped a fence and ran off through the school grounds. Defence counsel Anselm Williams said Stewart had, from the beginning, expressed a “great deal of sorrow and remorse” for the tragedy. Yesterday, Justice Rachel Dunningham accepted Stewart’s “genuine remorse, shame and guilt” and sentenced him to three-and-a-half years in jail.

Support staff need urgent NZME Schools across the country will soon find out whether they will get access to new support staff as the Government confirms its plan to help more children with learning needs. But principals say they are worried the strategy won’t address urgent issues quickly enough and lacks a real, longterm funding commitment. Associate Education Minister Tracey Martin has announced the final version of the Government’s strategy to improve learning support for about 200,000 students who need additional assistance. The plan comes on the back of a select committee inquiry looking into improving education for children with dyslexia, dyspraxia, and autism spectrum disorders and has been in consultation since a draft was released last year. The cornerstone of the policy is the introduction of 600 “Learning Support Co-ordinators” across schools from January next year – a project first announced in 2018.
Associate Education Minister Tracey Martin While the final plan released yesterday does say not how the co-ordinators will be allocated, Martin said schools would next week find out who would get access to additional staff. “The schools that will have the allocation, they will be told next week who those schools are. They can then start advertising for those positions,” she told Newstalk ZB. “It may be that they can’t all be filled by the school at the beginning of the 2020 year but the money is all there should they be able to fill all those positions.”
Martin said she would be putting in a bid for the 2020 Budget for further tranches of support staff. Auckland Primary Principals’ Association president Heath McNeil said while the intent of the action plan was important, many of its goals were “we wills” subject to getting more funding down the line. “For example, the next tranche of [the co-ordinators] is subject to funding, so other than those first 600 schools, the nearly 2000 other schools across New Zealand are left in no certainty that they will get one,” he said. “We’ve got boards of trustees now that are forced into topping up ministry funding by tens of thousands, in some cases hundreds of thousands, every year out of their operational budgets ... We’ve just had a significant number of our students with needs have teacher aide funding cuts, pretty drastic ones, in the last three months.” McNeil points to other aims of the action plan, including reducing waiting times for early intervention. “But the timeframe for that is
six-and-a-half years with no real targets,” he said. “They’ve identified the right areas, but there doesn’t appear to be long-term commitment with adequate resourcing. If we are just saying everything is subject to funding, what assurances are we giving to parents?” Martin said the Government had provided $619.7 million of new funding over four years in its first two Budgets, including $29.6m in May to tackle growing demand. Other key parts of yesterday’s announcement include a plan to, by 2025, introduce universal testing and screening for children to see whether they need additional help as they start school and extending support for gifted children from next year. “Dyslexia students, particularly, are not picked up if their family doesn’t have money,” Martin said. “One of the things we’ve never had in this country is centrally collected information about the different learning support students need ... and that’s why we’re going to centrally collect that data.”
NZME Two people have been arrested as Customs seize 100kg of methamphetamine with a street value of up to $50 million. The Australian men in their mid-20s were to appear in the Auckland District Court yesterday charged with importing and possessing between 70kg and 100kg of methamphetamine, hidden inside plastic storage pallets. Based on the New Zealand Drug Harm Index, the seizure has prevented an estimated $86 million to $124m of social and community harm. If the quantity of methamphetamine had been sold, in per gram amounts, it would have had a street value of between $35 million and $50m. The two men arrived at Auckland Airport in June 2019. Although their arrival cards stated they were visiting the country for a short time, Customs investigators allegedly established the men had rented a storage unit. Customs investigators carried out multiple search warrants, with the assistance of NZ Police, at the storage unit and where the men were staying on Thursday. The search of the storage unit allegedly located 142 black and green plastic storage pallets and evidence of drug extraction from within the pallets. During the search, two plastic pallets were allegedly found partially disassembled, with compressed methamphetamine visible in hidden compartments. The search of the West Auckland home of one of the arrested men allegedly located an estimated $50,000 cash, hidden inside a dishwasher and inside a backpack. The search of a hotel room in central Auckland, where the second arrested man was staying, allegedly located keys to the storage unit. Customs investigations manager Bruce Berry said the investigation and seizure was the result of analysing intelligence information about how some drug syndicates operate. “It is not unusual for foreign nationals to arrive into the country, solely for the purpose of facilitating drug shipments,” Berry said. “This seizure and the arrests are an example of some very good intelligence and investigative work, and we acknowledge the assistance of NZ Police. “The concealment method was quite sophisticated and not easily identifiable. We are still in process of completing the methamphetamine extraction to confirm the weight and purity. We already know that a significant amount of methamphetamine is involved, and Customs is very pleased to have stopped it from reaching the streets and harming our communities.”

Missile test a ‘warning’
AP A day after two North Korean missile launches rattled Asia, Pyongyang announced that leader Kim Jong-un had supervised the test of a new tactical guided weapon that was meant as a “solemn warning” about rival South Korea’s weapons development and plans to hold military exercises with the United States. South Korea’s military said that the flight data of the weapon launched Thursday showed similarities to the Russian-made Iskander, a shortrange, nuclear-capable missile. A North Korean version could likely reach all of South Korea and would be extremely hard to intercept. The North Korean statement was carried in state media and directed at “South Korean military warmongers”. It appears to be part of a broader pressure campaign during recent weeks to make sure Pyongyang gets what it wants as US and North Korean officials struggle to set up working-level talks after a recent meeting on the Korean border between Kim and President Donald Trump seemed to provide a step forward in stalled nuclear negotiations. Although the North had harsh words for South Korea, the statement stayed away from the kind of belligerent attacks on the United States that have marked past announcements, a possible signal that it’s interested in keeping diplomacy alive. It made clear, however, that North Korea is infuriated over Seoul’s purchase of US-made

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo played down Thursday’s launches and said in an interview with Bloomberg TV that working-level talks with North Korea could start “in a couple weeks.” “Everybody tries to get ready for negotiations and create leverage and create risk for the other side,” Pompeo said of the launches. The North Korean statement was gloating at times, saying the weapons test “must have given uneasiness and agony to some targeted forces enough as it intended”. It also accused South Korea of introducing “ultramodern offensive weapons”. That’s likely a reference to South Korea’s purchase and ongoing deployment of USmade F-35 fighter jets. Earlier
this month, North Korea said it would develop and test “special weapons” to destroy the aircraft. In its biggest weapons purchase, South Korea is to buy 40 F-35 fighter jets from Lockheed Martin by 2021. The first two arrived in March and two others are to be delivered in coming weeks. After watching the launches, Kim said the new weapons are hard to intercept because of their “low-altitude gliding and leaping flight orbit,” the North’s Korean Central News Agency reported yesterday. He was quoted as saying the possession of “such a state-ofthe-art weaponry system” is of “huge eventful significance” in bolstering his country’s armed forces and guaranteeing national security. A joint South Korean-US analysis of the launches showed the North Korean weapons are of a new type of short-range ballistic missile that have a “similar flight fea-

Jailed for recording harassment NZME An Indonesian bookkeeper who rose to national prominence after she was sentenced to jail for recording her boss to prove he was sexually harassing her is expected to receive amnesty from the country’s president as early as next week. A grant of amnesty by President Joko Widodo would reverse two Supreme Court rulings and spare the bookkeeper, Nuril Maknun, a sixmonth jail term, in a case that has highlighted the frequent mistreatment of women in Indonesia. The president signalled his intention to grant amnesty last week when he asked for the parliament’s approval, which it granted Thursday. Once the president receives a formal letter of approval from the parliament, he will issue a decree granting Nuril amnesty, an aide to the pres-
ident said. “Baiq Nuril is the real victim, not the perpetrator,” said parliament member Erma Suryani Ranik, using an honorific for Nuril as she read a statement from parliament supporting the grant of amnesty. Nuril appeared before the parliament, where she spoke from the podium, thanked her supporters and urged parliament not to let other women suffer the same treatment. The plight of Nuril, 41, resonated with women across the predominantly Muslim nation, who have little recourse against the verbal harassment they often face in the workplace and in public places. Indonesia’s law against sexual harassment does not cover verbal abuse unless there is also physical contact. The case against Nuril also called attention to gender inequities in Indonesia’s judicial system, under which Nuril
was punished for recording her boss’s lewd remarks to her but he faced no legal consequences for having uttered them. After her boss, the principal at the high school where she worked, learned of the recording, Nuril lost her job, while his career flourished. She was charged with distributing obscene material and served two months in jail while awaiting trial. He was never charged with a crime. The case propelled Nuril, a mother of three, into the national spotlight, where she has become a rare voice for Indonesian women and equal rights. “For other women who might have experienced cases like me, we have to be brave,” she said in an interview. “Our dignity as women, our selfworth as women, should not be easily trampled by other people.”

Robertson eyes funding flexibility

Warehouse Group’s efforts to revive flagging growth are showing “encouraging signs” after the retailer upgraded its earnings forecast, says research house Forsyth Barr. The retailer said better trading and gains from its transformation programme mean adjusted profit after tax will beat the previous guidance of $63-$66 million in the year ending July 28, and it now expects to report adjusted profit of $67-$70 million, up from $59 million a year earlier. The improvement was due to a better trading performance and benefits reaped from the transformation programme. The company said earnings might be even higher because it doesn’t expect to pay the full amount of its short-term incentive scheme. Warehouse also said its balance sheet is stronger, with net debt expected to be $60-$80 million at the balance date, down from $153.1 million at the first-half update. That’s due to better management of working capital and inventory levels, it said. “Warehouse is in the early stages of its business transformation

but continued operational/sales improvement and working capital gains are encouraging signs of execution,” Forsyth Barr analyst Guy Hooper said in a note. However, Hooper said it’s still early days for the transformation programme, which seeks to strip out complexity in the business and make it a more flexible operator. The stock climbed 4.7 per cent to $2.21 on Thursday, its highest close in about two years. It’s rated an average ‘hold’ based on four analyst recommendations compiled by Refinitiv, with a median price target of $2.03. It last traded up 0.9 percent at $2.23. Warehouse has been attempting to adapt to the changing retail environment in which online
purchases have undermined the traditional ‘bricks and mortar’ networks. That’s included some unsuccessful forays into new lines of business, such as its attempt to build a consumer finance arm to complement its core business. Chief executive Nick Grayston has been tasked with returning the business to growth under an ‘Everyday Low Prices’ model rather than relying on traditional discounting. He’s also integrated the back-office operations of the group’s various businesses to cut costs. Like many traditional retail chains, Warehouse shifted more sales to online channels, and its new digital platform was in its testing phase in the fourth quarter.
Finance Minister Grant Robertson says too much government time is spent juggling small funding pools rather than focusing on strategic issues and getting value for money and he plans to introduce greater flexibility to its financial management. The government has already made changes to the Public Finance Act requiring the finance minister to report on child well-being and child poverty at every budget. Robertson will introduce legislation to amend it further by requiring the government to show how its well-being and fiscal objectives will guide its budget and for the Treasury to report on the state of current and future well-being in New Zealand at least every four years. Robertson yesterday told a Victoria University conference recognising the 30th anniversary of the Public Finance Act that the legislation and public finance system have limitations that undermine the government’s pursuit of well-being goals.
Hooper said the online platform – TheMarket – is due to launch in early August, and will sell mostly Australian and New Zealand brands “which we understand will offer customers loyalty benefits and provide an additional subscription based service”. He noted risks to the business include the New Zealand expansion of Wesfarmers-owned Kmart and entry of Amazon into Australia. However, the company’s physical network and strong brands – which include Warehouse ‘Red Sheds’, Warehouse Stationery, and Noel Leeming – give it a good position. At its first-half update, Warehouse said it will update investors on its mid-term strategy at the annual result.

Debate over alcohol advertising rules
The more examples the ASA is able to see, the better equipped it will be to ensure that New Zealand’s strict legislative restrictions are reflected in the ads that appear online. Advertising executive Ahamad Salim has worked on numerous alcohol campaigns over the years and says he isn’t concerned by the prospect of a tightening of the rules. “To be honest, the internal marketing rules of most of the alcohol clients we work with are so much stricter than any country’s code,” says Salim, group business director at Colenso BBDO.
He says there’s far too much at stake for major companies to be pushing the bounds when it comes to online advertising. “The alcohol industry is already under so much scrutiny, and they don’t want to be caught doing the wrong thing.” Salim says that in any industry, alcohol or otherwise, the riskiest advertising rarely comes from big established brands but rather from smaller challengers, who are looking to get noticed in a cluttered market – and this is where you sometimes see mis-steps. The alcohol industry has already seen an example of that at the ASA

Turning to the global reporting season, more than 100 components of the S&P 500 announced results this week and overall, the earnings season is off to a good start. At the time of writing, 77 per cent of companies reported have beat earnings estimates while 63 per cent of those have beaten sales forecasts. Shares in Boeing dropped 3.1 per cent after the company posted a significant quarterly loss due to higher costs as its 737 Max jet remains grounded. It also warned that it could suspend production of the aircraft if delays worsen. Meanwhile, Caterpillar shares slid 4.5 per cent after reporting weaker than expected earnings and revenue amid rising costs. Staying in the US, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the US and China remain far apart on key concerns on trade, ahead of meetings in Shanghai next week. “I would say there are a lot of issues,” Mnuchin said ahead of the highly anticipated meetings, which are set to include US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer. Mnuchin said that he expects trade negotiations between the US and China to continue in Washington after the trip. The meeting will mark the first high-level negotiations between the two sides since nearly a dozen rounds of talks fell apart in May.

Low interest rate attracts investors T he NZX continued to grind higher this week, as the current low interest rate environment attracts investors to the sharemarket. A slew of companies within the index are trading at record highs, including market heavyweights, the a2 Milk Company and Mainfreight, with shares up 54 per cent and 37 per cent respectively so far this year. The NZX50 is up a healthy 22.7 per cent year to date. Meanwhile, the New Zealand dollar declined 0.4 per cent against the US dollar on Wednesday after the Reserve Bank of New Zealand said it was refreshing its strategy for unconventional monetary policy. In corporate news, Oceania Healthcare reported an increase in operating revenue of 2.9 per cent due to increased aged care occupancy, a greater number of premium rooms and good performance from its retirement village operations. Underlying net profit after tax from continuing operations of $49.7m was slightly down on last year. Improved development margins were offset by increased wage costs, along with higher interest expense to fund development activity. The company declared a final dividend of 2.6 cents per share. Meanwhile, enterprise software company, Gentrack downgraded operating earnings guidance from slightly above $31m, to a range of between $27m and $28m. The company said the decrease in guidance was due to delays in customer projects and contracts. Its shares traded down as much as 15 per cent following the result.

Looking further ahead, the rules being shaped for alcohol advertising today will also take on greater significance in coming years if recreational cannabis is legalised in this market. There are still many variables and few guarantees, but opportunistic start-up companies will certainly snap at any opportunity to get noticed in the local scene if legislation is liberalised. You can rest assured, though, the fastidious eyes at the ASA will be watching closely if New Zealand media starts to take on a greener hue. Goodale says that the point of an ad agency is also to protect the client and ensure that terrible ideas don’t see the light of day. “That’s an important part of the role of an ad agency,” he says. “They take the raw idea of what a client wants to do, polish it up and make it a campaignable idea that captures the hearts and minds of the public.”

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) is calling on interest groups and the public to have their say on a review of the guidelines for advertisements featuring alcoholic beverages. New Zealand legislation already provides strict guidelines on what can and cannot be done in alcohol advertising, but the review is part of a regular effort by the ASA to ensure that its guidelines continue to reflect the way products are advertised in the modern media environment. “This is not about whether advertising alcohol should be legal or not,” says ASA chief executive Hilary Souter. “That’s a discussion you need to have with the Government.” Instead, she says, the review’s aim is to make sure the ASA isn’t missing anything in its efforts to ensure that alcohol advertising observes a high standard of social responsibility – particularly when it comes to children. That standard has become increasingly difficult to achieve as advertising has moved online –
as illustrated by an ASA decision last year, in which a university researcher was able to access Corona advertising while logged into a Facebook profile for someone aged under 18. To its credit, Corona quickly acknowledged a mistake had been made and updated its age verification controls on Facebook. Souter says Facebook also has strict rules governing how alcohol is advertised on its platforms, doing what it can to ensure younger consumers aren’t exposed to the wrong kind of content online. That said, the online environment is evolving quickly and there could be ways in which ads are slipping through the cracks and reaching eyeballs that shouldn’t be targeted. Souter says the review of the code presents an opportunity for members of the public to provide examples of online ads they’re worried about, saying that many of the guidelines have been shaped by real-world examples that have appeared before the board. The guidelines are malleable, bending over time to reflect changing media and social standards.

New Zealand singer, actor, writer and producer Ali Harper, soon to present her one-woman show
W
hen Ali Harper left school, she was not quite sure what she wanted to do, she just knew it was something to do with acting, singing and being in the theatre. Her mother, however, had different plans. She told her 18-year-old daughter she needed to go to secretarial and business school. “She was trying to protect me from a life that would be full of challenges,” Harper said. With bookkeeping, typing, shorthand and business management skills under her belt, Ali was happy enough in her first job after graduating from polytech.
But when a chance to audition for Chess the Musical came up, she took it. “I had been listening to that record since I was 14, pretending I was in the show.” After a youth of being in many a theatre production, it was a love she just could not get out of her system. She got a part in the show, which was touring New Zealand with the original West End stars, and found herself quitting her office job in Christchurch and going on tour. “It was absolutely amazing, a life-changing experience.” It gave her the impetus to pursue an education in what she had always wanted to do, and she got into the New Zealand Drama School in Wellington.
Upon graduation, Harper went to Australia and began to tread the mill of audition after audition, and found it hard going. “I just lacked confidence. I noticed everyone walked into the audition room and said ‘This is me, this is who I am’.” As a typical diffident Kiwi, she felt she wasn’t selling herself as well as she could be. She knew she was in the right field, she just wasn’t sure what the next step would be. But coming back to New Zealand gave her the spark of creativity she needed and, at the age of 25, she decided to produce her own show. “It was fantastic being in control,
not waiting for the phone to ring,” she said. She set up her own production company and has not looked back since, producing and touring many shows throughout New Zealand and overseas. Even those secretarial skills have come in handy, helping in running her own office. Her latest show is A Doris Day Special, written as a tribute to the Hollywood legend who passed away earlier this year aged 97. Harper said portraying Day on stage was the realisation of a dream, after she had always been compared to her throughout her life, and had always idolised her.

in Ashburton, has no regrets about pursuing a career in entertainment. Susan Sandys reports. “For many, many years I have been told I’m reminiscent of Doris Day – freckles … blonde hair … I have a sunshiny disposition just like Doris Day, and I’m proud of that.” And who could forget those hit songs which have stood the test of time – Que Sera Sera, A Secret Love, Sentimental Journey and Dream a little Dream of Me. In undertaking her research for the show, Harper met Day herself. In 2016 she was among a crowd in Carmel by the Sea in America where Day would annually talk to the public from her balcony on her birthday. Harper had gone there with her director Stephanie McKellar-Smith, and as people in the crowd got a chance to talk to Day, their
voice transmitted by phone, Harper took the opportunity and sang one of Day’s most famous songs to her, A Secret Love. It was a highlight of Harper’s life when Day responded with “Wow! You sound good! Oh my gosh. You make that song sound really so good”. Harper will bring the one-woman show A Doris Day Special to the Ashburton Trust Event Centre on August 15. Portraying the Hollywood icon herself, Harper sings many of those hit songs in the show. The show is set in a Hollywood Television Studio in 1971 where Doris Mary Anne Von Kappelhoff is filming her own television special.
Harper’s tribute gives a glimpse into a life that was not always filled with sunshine and daisies. Day had many tough times, including four marriages in which one husband was abusive, being injured in a car crash and having her son pass away before she did. “She was an incredibly brave and empowering woman, the tragedies in her life did not define her.” Harper is no stranger to performing one-woman shows around New Zealand and beyond. She was awarded Best Actress at the United Solo Festival in New York with Bombshells and was awarded Best One Woman Show in New York late last year for The Court Theatre production of Songs for Nobodies.
This year she has been touring the high seas on a cruise liner, presenting her Legendary Divas show. She has already taken A Doris Day Special to numerous cities around New Zealand, to much acclaim. “Now it’s time to get back on the road as a way to honour and celebrate one of the great entertainers of our time,” she said. Harper is today a mum of three, aged from eight to 19, who lives in her home city of Christchurch with husband Iain, and has never had any regrets about the career path she chose. “If I had chosen to go down another direction I would have been denying my true calling,” she said.

Stealing from graves? Are you kidding? I
’m not quite sure what kind of person it would take to steal something from another person’s grave, but I’m picking they’re the sort of individual that most of us wouldn’t really want to hang out with. Yesterday morning I received a phone call from a local man who had just discovered that, for the third time, someone had taken an item from his late wife’s grave at the Ashburton Cemetery. Yes, you read that right – the third time. I felt deeply sorry for the man, and I feel deeply disturbed that people think this okay. Dealing with the passing of someone special in your life is a hard process. It takes time, a lot of time, to come to grips with

and to accept. One of the ways that many people often help themselves through that process is by paying frequent visits to the cemetery to spend time with their loved one and to remember. Often there are items left on graves to serve as a reminder, keepsakes the hold plenty of meaning and importance to the people involved. And they should be able to do this without
fear of coming back the next day, or the next week, to find that those items have been stolen by someone. The items stolen from the headstone of the man’s late wife aren’t hugely valuable, but they do have significant meaning and whilst he has had enough of the acts and rightly declared he’d be keen to get his hands on the “low bastards”, he’s once again going to replace what was taken – and believe that this time round people will do good. The Ashburton District Council is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the Ashburton Cemetery and it was revealed to me that they didn’t want this particular incident taken to the media for fear of creating a copy-
cat-like scenario. My response to that is that I would hardly imagine the sort of people who are reading this newspaper are the same sort of people you’ll find lurking around in a cemetery stealing things off people’s graves. Instead, our subscriber base and the people who pay to read these pages would suggest, that in large, our readers are upstanding members of the community. The sort of people who, after reading this editorial, might just keep their eyes peeled a little more next time they drive past the cemetery and look to see if something suspicious is unfolding and then report it to the relevant authorities if it is. It’s important that our com-
munity is kept informed of incidents like this and that we don’t hide behind the fear of a repeat because of something being out in the public. Those “low-bastards”, as yesterday’s caller so rightly put it, are the minority in this community, whereas the good are the majority and we need to remember that. I sincerely hope that the return of the special item that was on the top of the grave of the wife of yesterday’s caller is the final time that it has to happen and that something, which to everyone else is so insignificant, but is incredibly significant to someone else, remains where it rightfully should be for many years to come.

Nature vs nurture Pt 2 O
n more than one occasion I have read the following statement in the local court news; “he is a good boy”. This statement has come from either the young man’s mother or his lawyer. On more than one occasion, I have wanted to call BS because I have known the offender and his past. So how do these young men end up in front of a judge? As a follow-up to my first piece three weeks ago, I’m going to timeline the development of a boy’s life leading up to him being in front of a judge. In my first article I outlined factors that were common in cases of boys who exhibited negative behaviours and I believe were key in them becoming monsters who abuse our women. So the following is a timetable of a boy’s transition from boy to monster. The Pre-School Years William was born to a first time mum who was not married, but in a long term relationship. The excitement of having a child soon wore off. The economic reality put pressure on the relationship and it wasn’t long before William’s mum was being asked by her partner when she would be returning to work. Daycare was expensive but there was a friend who could have William three days a week, so by the time William was two, he spent many of his waking hours in another house, being transported to and from daycare

and having less and less amounts of contact time with his mother. William never had to share until a sibling arrived when he was three-and-a-half. He didn’t understand why he had to share the small amount of time he did have at home with someone else. Now it became easier to allow William to have more and more screen time to occupy him, rather than engage with him on a personal level. It was at this point that his family moved, but not his dad. William knew that his mum and dad shouted, but he didn’t know why. Now William was in a new house and couldn’t go to mum’s friend anymore for visits. This meant he was constantly wanting his mother’s attention at home, and she was always getting angry at him quickly. By the time he was five, William was in a pattern of using tantrums and yelling to get what he wanted. His mother was in a pattern of yelling at him, taking away his TV from his bedroom and putting him in time out. The School Years Not long after William started school, a new dad came to the
house. He started having some of his friends visit during the weekend. They were always doing silly stuff and soon William and his sister were left alone to play in their bedrooms while his mum and new dad stayed up late. William didn’t like having to look after his sister. She couldn’t play his games, and when she annoyed him, he started hitting her. He made sure she had stopped crying before his mum found out. One day, William’s mum didn’t wake up in time to take him to school, so he hit her to wake her up. He yelled at her and she told him to go away. He made his sister toast and played on the play station until his mum woke up. William started hitting his mum more when he didn’t get his way, he had been yelling and swearing at her for a while. Then he swore at his teacher and got into trouble at school. His mum was called in and found out he had been hitting and yelling at other children. William didn’t like the consequences from school and whinged incessantly to his mum. She went back to the school and said it was the teacher’s fault for not understanding him. William’s new dad said it was because the female teachers at school were weak. So William’s mum asked if he could go with his grandfather in his truck on the weekends and holidays. It seemed to work well because for those few hours he got what he wanted.
The High School Years By the time William was fourteen, he was three years behind in his schooling. Not because he had a learning disability, but because he was missing school, not taking interest in the lessons and not caring about school consequences. It had now got to a point where William openly defied his mother. She had had two more children and the new dad had long gone. William would choose to go to school if he wanted, but only to see his few friends. He wanted a girlfriend, but they laughed at his attempts. At sixteen William and friends were stealing and they started stealing from other people. William punched another student because he wouldn’t give him what he wanted. At eighteen he was charged with assault after he was caught fighting at a McDonalds. William now stands before a judge and at one point in the court proceedings, his mother says underneath all of this he is a ‘good boy’. But I believe, unless there is a major turnaround or intervention, William is on the path to becoming a monster. Peter Livingstone is the principal of Tinwald School. Thank God for the volunteers
I
have often noted in the newspapers I read, much mention of organisations, sports clubs, service providers, schools, conservation projects and various charities, how much they appreciate all the people who support them, especially the many hours of voluntary time given by ‘good sorts’. Some of these people have even been given a financial reward, from time to time, by such media promotions as the ASB Good Sorts, which identifies someone who has gone over and above in their dedication to a worthy enterprise or an organisation, especially those that help out the poor, needy or marginalised in our community. This is all well and good, but it also highlights the imbalance in our society, for those groups that rely on volunteers, charitable contributions and the like to prop-up or stop-gap the shortfall

in the provision of welfare for a large portion of our society. One of the organisations that specialises in these endeavours are our churches and churchbased organisations. Unfortunately, those who reach out to people in need, because of their Christian conviction and calling to follow in Jesus’ footsteps, are also those who are least recognised of our large, voluntary workforce. There are some who are readily identified as active in this area, such as the Salvation Army and St. Vincent de Paul op-shops, (among a plethora of op-shops) but that is just the tip of the iceberg, as there are many other organisations, such as the Meth-

odist Mission and Presbyterian Support, who largely go unrecognised for the fantastic work they do, with whatever funding they can raise. There are also many Christian volunteers serving other endeavours who do so because they see that they are helping those in need, as Jesus showed us to do. Then there is a, largely unrecognised, workforce of volunteers who serve the church itself. For every worshipping congregation, there are those who prepare and present the music and teach in Sunday services, those who look after and administer church buildings for the multi-faceted use they provide, as well as all those who undertake the very important roles of providing hospitality and catering for church events. These ‘good sorts’ do this because of their commitment to the church, to their faith and to the
groups of people they belong to. However, unlike many other endeavours, such as sports and community events, they are largely taken for granted, poorly recognised and quite often considered invisible. I wish there were ways and means we could properly reward these tireless volunteers who have served their Lord, Jesus Christ, in small ways and large, often for most of their lives. Thank you God, for all the gifted and talented people who have answered the call to service, and who have done so faithfully, serving the church, the community and the world in their spare time. LETTERS Discarded needle I read in Friday’s Guardian an article regarding someone out walking, not wanting to up pick a needle item for some consecutive days and in turn making us believe that to be solely the council’s responsibility. This article took up much of the front page of the Guardian, quite staggering. A week ago i saw a knife on a footpath, i picked it up and dumped it, done. Yes, perhaps the council could have acted quicker, but I cant help wonder if this person who was concerned for children’s safety couldn’t have removed it immediately. Best case scenario, don’t dump rubbish. Second best, see rubbish and pick it up. Third best, don’t blame ‘THE SYSTEM’. The council do have responsibility, as do we all. Patrick Forde

College A may be the youngest team in the Mid Canterbury Netball premier one competition, but their latest win means that they are officially the team to beat. They came away with a 37-32 win from their top-of-the-table clash with a previously unbeaten United A at the EA Networks Centre on Thursday night, and as a result moved to an outright lead on the points table at the mid-point of the season’s third and final championship round. It was a game that started off as most expected it would, with the two sides going goal for goal, until United A managed to get a small roll on, only for College A to come back with a roll of their own to lead 9-7 at quarter time. College extended that lead to five early in the second quarter, and although United got back to within two by half-time, College A weren’t giving them much room to move and weren’t going to give up their lead easily. Both sides made changes in the third, with United switching Alice Hamill to goal attack and Stacey Smith Grant moving out to wing attack, with Nat Shaw entering the game on defence. For College A, Dani McArthur moved to the shooting circle to join the steady-as-ever Hayley Tallentire, while Emma Stagg and Grace Adams joined the fray in the mid-court, and it was those changes which had the most impact early on, with College A extending their lead to eight. United A grabbed a couple back to trail 29-24 at three quarter time, but for United A to make up that deficit, something needed to change. So United coach Claire Tappin did just that, bringing Anna Edzes back on at goal keep after a quarter off, and it was a move that paid dividends early, with United again getting back within two goals. But, United made a couple of uncharacteristic mistakes late in the game which the young College side took advantage of, and

moved back out to a five goal margin by full-time. College A coach Kaye Kennedy said a big effort from her midcourt and circle defenders meant they picked up a lot of ball before United could get it to the steady Olivia McLennan under the hoop. “I was pleased with our ball retention and once again Hayley (Tallentire) had a high shooting percentage to finish it off,” Kennedy said. The night before that game, the College side had gone down 40-36 to St Margarets in the Canterbury secondary schools’ net-
ball competition, SuperNet, in Christchurch. That was a big improvement on their last outing against St Margarets, though, so Kennedy said it had been a good week. United A coach Tappin said her team was simply outplayed by a better team. She felt her side stood up well to College’s strong circle defence, but they made their fair share of errors and were disappointed in themselves. But it also helped to motivate them. “We’re stronger for the loss
now, rather than in the semis,” Tappin said. The result meant that with just two games remaining before finals, the young College side were three from three in the final round, while United A, Hampstead A and defending champions Celtic A had two wins each. Methven A and Mt Somers were still without a win in this round, with Mt Somers suffering the heaviest defeat of the latest round, beaten 41-15 by Celtic A on Thursday night. Celtic A coach Ange Leadley said her team produced a good,
solid 40-minute performance. “Things we have been working on all came together and the girls really delivered a strong performance,” Leadley said. Meanwhile, Methven A’s disappointing run also continued, with Hampstead A handing them a 3223 defeat. Meanwhile, in premier two, Southern A notched up another big win, downing Hampstead B 51-25, while the night’s other two games were closer affairs. Celtic B beat Methven B 2419, while Ashburton College B downed Celtic C 28-22.

First Midlands titles for duo By Erin Tasker

They came from all corners of the Squash Midlands district to battle it out in Timaru, but it was two players from the same Ashburton club who proved too tough to beat. They were there for the pinnacle event on the Squash Midlands calendar – the Midlands Open – and at the end of a tough couple of days at the Timaru Squash Club last weekend it was the Ashburton Squash Club’s Katrina Palmer and Lee Barker who took out the open women’s and men’s titles respectively. Top seed Barker faced Oamaru’s Keidah Bungard in the men’s final and won it in four sets to claim his first Midlands Open men’s title. A former Midlands junior champion who originally hailed from Oamaru, Barker moved to Ashburton around six or seven years ago, around the same time he picked up a squash racket again.
He’d first started playing when he was about 11, but stopped when he left school. Now 35, he is well and truly making up for lost time. He only missed a couple of the tournaments on the Midlands Circuit this season, and in the

“There was a comment made afterwards that it was the closest women’s final that we have had in a number of years,” Palmer said. For Palmer, it was also her first Midlands Open title. In fact, it was her first appearance at the tournament. Originally from Nelson, she moved to Ashburton two years ago after four years living in Perth. Like Barker, Palmer is having a stellar 2019 season so far, despite having been battling a knee injury. As well as the wins she’d taken at a local level, she also exceeded expectations a few weeks ago when she played at the nationals in Auckland. She finished 19th in a draw of 32 – her best finish from multiple appearances. She was also part of the Midlands team which attended a quadrangular tournament in Dunedin earlier this year and is likely to be a part of the next Midlands team named – the one to
head to Christchurch for the senior teams nationals in six weeks time. Barker was also likely to be named in that team, as Midlands prepared to send a men’s team to the event for the first time in many years. Palmer said last year was the first time Midlands had ever sent a women’s team to the tournament and, although they were seeded bottom, they gave some teams a run for their money. This year, Midlands could be a force to be reckoned with, with the men’s line-up in particular likely to be strong, Palmer said. But there was still plenty of squash to be played before then, including Palmer and Barker’s home club’s annual open tournament. The Ashburton Open is set to be played next weekend and while Barker will have to be a favourite to take out the men’s title, Palmer won’t be a contender for the women’s title as she is going to be away.

Beckley Memorial default A week after battling it out in one final, Methven and Rakaia’s senior B rugby teams were due to do it all over again tomorrow, with more silverware on the line. But, instead, the Bruce Beckley Memorial Cup – a prize with a proud history spanning more than 50 years – is headed straight to the trophy cabinet at the Methven Rugby Club, after Rakaia yesterday made the call to default the match. Initially, after Rakaia advised they’d have to default due to a lack
of numbers, the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union made the decision to postpone the match and look to find another potential date to play it in the future. But late yesterday, Mid Canterbury Rugby Union chief executive Ian Patterson said the default would stand. The initial decision to postpone was largely down to the Bruce Beckley Memorial Cup’s long and proud history, and a desire to keep that going, but it wasn’t a decision popular with everyone.
“Obviously the union is extremely disappointed with the situation, given this has been a traditional fixture for many years and has always followed a week after the club final,” Patterson said. The annual Beckley Memorial was always the final act of the Mid Canterbury Rugby senior B season, and always held the Sunday of the weekend after the main final, and it was always held at Mt Somers. “While the player unavailability
is a result of a number of issues, it’s still disappointing that Rakaia can’t field a side for such an important occasion.” Rakaia and Methven played each other a week ago today for the Second Grade Cup, and Rakaia came out on top in that one 27-14, meaning they would have been favourites to add the Beckley Cup to Rakaia’s impressive silverware collection this season. That included Mid Canterbury Rugby’s showpiece, the Watters
Cup, which Rakaia’s senior side won in an extra-time thriller, also over Methven, last weekend. But the Beckley Cup would instead now make its way to Methven for the summer, without a whistle having been blown. The Bruce Beckley Cup was donated by Muriel and Ron Beckley following the tragic passing of their son Bruce more than 50 years ago. It was first played for in 1962, with Old Boys being the first side to have their name engraved on the trophy.
Litmus test for the World Cup AP The All Blacks and Springboks coaches agree the winner of tonight’s Rugby Championship test in Wellington will take a slight edge into the World Cup where the teams will meet again in the first round of pool play. New Zealand coach Steve Hansen and South Africa coach Rassie Erasmus also agree the winner of the match will likely win this year’s Championship and that the tournament is only a stepping stone towards the World Cup and a re-match in Yokohama on Sept. 21. “In the bigger scheme of things one will always play down this test match and say the World Cup is the most important,” Erasmus said. “But in the same breath it’s a New Zealand-South Africa test match so for both teams it’s very important.”
Hansen is thinking along similar lines. “In the big scheme of this year does the result matter?” Hansen said. “I guess it will give whoever wins it a little confidence going in to the World Cup. But I don’t think it’s going to affect the World Cup, no.” The Springboks seem to be heading towards the World Cup on a well-defined road with a clearly understood game plan and consistent selections. New Zealand, instead, has plunged off down various cul-de-sacs in both tactics and selection, choosing ever-larger squads comprising players who often make only one appearance before vanishing from the radar. The Springboks’ lineup for Saturday’s match is a stable one; the All Blacks team sees the return of many front-line players including its first choice tight-five. But it still has an experimental cast.

eauden Barrett at fullback and Richie Mo’unga at first-five just may be the best stroke the All Black selectors have pulled since they picked a 20-year-old, Rieko Ioane, on the wing to play against the 2017 Lions in his first test start. “We just think he’s the boy,” said Hansen when the team was announced in ‘17, and we discovered Ioane had seen off incumbent Julian Savea. We’d later discover, when a documentary was released a year later, that Hansen had to work hard to convince assistant Ian Foster of the wisdom of the move. At training Hansen said to Foster, “Have a look and see what you think. Be open. If it doesn’t work, change it.” It did, and they didn’t. What’s fascinating about the selectors finding a way to include both Barrett and Mo’unga, who I believe are the two best first-fives in world rugby, in the same starting lineup, is that the veteran, Barrett, has been moved to allow the newcomer to take the 10 jersey. Over the 16 seasons Hansen has been involved with the All
Blacks, first as an assistant, then as head coach, the mantra that team comes first has been drummed into the players. It would appear to have worked. The discussion between Hansen and Barrett over the selection feels like a classic case of angst-free Kiwiana. “I (Hansen) said ‘you’re playing fullback’ and he said ‘no worries’. That’s about how it went.” As it happens both players make pretty good fullbacks, but Barrett, whose tackling technique is impeccable, would probably have a slender edge if the competition was just to play at 15. Within the game in Wellington the chance to sometimes swap roles may occur, and the two will discover how easily or otherwise they find making tactical decisions. And if you were going to experiment, as Hansen and Co have in other parts of the team as well, best to do it against the pressure that will be provided by a South African team that looms as the most formidable opposition in the Rugby Championship. Beating South Africa was the pinnacle for New Zealand Rugby for generations.
Which made it slightly odd when, in the 2000s, the Springboks often struggled, and Australia became the foe of choice, the yardstick for All Black success or failure. For traditionalists the renaissance of the Springboks, will feel right and fitting. Playing, and hopefully beating, the Aussies was fine, but somehow there was slightly more satisfaction from succeeding in a Titanic battle with a Springbok side, teams that always felt loaded with forwards apparently conceived by two rocks in a granite quarry. My mind flashes back to a sunny high veldt August in Pretoria in 1996. All Black flanker Josh Kronfeld is accepting congratulations in the changing room at Loftus Versfeld. The All Blacks have just beaten the Springboks, 33-26, and, after 68 years, have finally won a series in South Africa. Former All Black Don Clarke, then living in South Africa, finds himself crying. But Kronfeld can barely muster a smile. I’ve known Josh’s parents from when we were all teenagers, and first saw him when he was in a carrycot. But when we shake hands, just lifting up his arm is exhausting
for the super-fit man he has become. The victory, it’s obvious, has only been won with a huge physical effort that’s left the All Blacks as drained as they are delighted. Now, I’d suggest, it’s back to the future in our rugby, with the test in Wellington a fascinating preview of what we might expect in eight weeks’ time in Yokohama, when the All Blacks face South Africa in the opening game of their World Cup campaign. Nothing much has changed from 2015, when, although the Wallabies, with the help of some appalling refereeing, staggered through to the final, the only real challenge to a majestic All Black side in the whole of the tournament came in the semi-final, when they had to battle all the way to beat South Africa, 20-18. That match was so tight, it took time, if you were a Kiwi, for the joy of the victory to sink in. Tension? Steve Hansen arrived at the semi-final press conference on the third floor of the Twickenham media centre slightly breathless. He apologised, blamed the stairs, then grinned and said, “Don’t want to put any extra strain on the heart after that game.” Indeed.
It is a long shot, but possible, that the All Blacks and South Africa could meet twice, at opposite ends of the tournament in Japan. For the test in Wellington, Boks’ coach Rassie Erasmus has picked probably the strongest team he can, after, like Hansen, rolling the dice in the first round. Erasmus said this week that his side “wouldn’t be getting carried away” with their 35-17 win over the Wallabies, probably echoing what Hansen felt after the All Blacks beat the Pumas, 20-16. This year the wins that count won’t be in Buenos Aires or Wellington. If the weather holds, we could see some exciting play. Just as they used to, the Boks have a gigantic pack. Flanker Pieter-Stephen du Toit, at 120kg, is heavier than All Black lock Brodie Retallick, and No.8 Duane Vermeulen, at 117kg, is heaver than Retallick’s locking partner, Sam Whitelock. So it would be amazing if the All Blacks didn’t want to run all that prime beef in green jerseys all over the paddock. And as it happens they should have just the fast, decisive, daring men at first-five and fullback to do the job.

Finals loom on the turf Cambridge are coming to town today for what’s likely to be a couple of big battles on the Ashburton hockey turf, with finals hockey just around the corner. Cambridge’s women will take on Hampstead, while Cambridge’s men will take on Wakanui, on a day of penultimate games of the competitions where the scenarios are reasonably similar. Cambridge are third on the points table in both competitions, while Wakanui are second on the men’s leaderboard, and Hampstead – after a slow start to the season – have powered back to be tied at the top of the women’s leaderboard with Geraldine. In hockey, although there’s knock-out finals to finish,
the biggest traditional prizes actually go to the teams that finish on top at the end of the round robin, and both Wakanui and Hampstead are well and truly in contention. But Hampstead need to beat Cambridge today, and Geraldine in their last game of the round robin next week, because leading contenders Geraldine have an extra game to play. They were last night due to play Cambridge in a deferred match from a couple of weeks ago, and if they won that as expected, it will have moved them clear at the top of the table. Hampstead appear to be the form side of the competition at the moment, with last week’s 5-1 win over Timaru
Girls’ High School the latest in a string of big wins for the Nicky Foden-coached side, but they could find themselves needing a couple of things to go their way in the last round if they’re to finish on top. For the men, Wakanui already have ground to make up to take that number one spot. Both competitions will head into knockout stage on August 10, with one playing two, and three playing four, and all finals will be played in Timaru on August 24.

Breen adds more titles to a growing collection A busy and successful winter means that by the time the summer sporting season rolls around, Ashburton’s Riley Breen will be more than ready. He’s been in top form during the off-season, which saw him head indoors and claim a number of titles at the recent Southern Junior Indoor Open, a tier two tournament. Tier two tournaments were awarded to regions such as Canterbury and Otago and they could only run one tier two tournament per year, so players travelled from around the country to play in them in order to help keep their gradings improving at a slightly better rate than playing solely in local tournaments would. In the Dunedin tournament, Breen was the top seed for the boys’ 10-year singles and he breezed to a 4-0 5-3 win in the first round, and then took on Timaru’s Hugo Brosnahan in the semi-final. The two played out a great match, where Breen won the first set 10-8 in a tie-breaker before powering away in the second to take it 4-0 and secure a spot in the final. In that final he took on Auckland’s Sam Fussell and it was a good match, full of strong hitting from both players, but Breen’s consistency shone through and he took the win 4-1 4-0.
Breen also competed in the 10s doubles with fellow Ashburton player Josh Gilbert and they swept through the early rounds with ease before coming up against Isaac Boomer and Alvin Na from Christchurch. The Christchurch duo took the first set 4-1, but the Ashburton pairing fought back to level it by taking the second set 4-1 and then the third in a tie-break to secure both the match and the title. With the 10s done, Breen stayed on for another couple days to play in the higher 11s age group and again played well in the early rounds, before downing third seed Louis De Lautour from Christchurch in the semi-finals 6-3 6-2. He then took on the number two seed, Spencer Weyburne from Wellington, in the final and again his consistency and never-give-up attitude saw him take the title 6-2 6-4. He teamed up with De Lautour for the 11s doubles and they swept through to final to play Tasman Daly and Anzac Robinson, both from Christchurch. It followed a similar pattern to Breen’s earlier doubles final, with the Christchurch boys winning a tight first set 6-4, before Breen and De Lautour fought back to win the second set 6-1, and then take a tight third set tie break 10-8.

Maumalo steps out of the shadow of The Beast NZME As little as three years ago, there were still some doubts about Ken Maumalo. It’s hard to believe now – as he has developed into one of the most effective wingers in the NRL, reminiscent of a Sherman tank with a sidestep – but they were there. He was anointed as the heir apparent to Manu Vatuvei, but some doubted he was the real deal.
His try scoring ability was questioned, as well as his defensive nous and he could occasionally be a bit wobbly under the high ball. Even in the 2017 season, when his form kept Vatuvei out of the team and prompted his early release, not everyone was sure Maumalo could escape the immense shadow of the “Beast”. How wrong they were. Maumalo’s development has been stunning, and he is now one
of the most valuable players in the competition. “He’s done really well in terms of his development as an NRL player over the last 24, 30 months,” said Warriors coach Stephen Kearney. “He’s got better and better on the field and what I really admire is that he wants to continue to improve.” Maumalo’s become a superb finisher, capable of acrobatics that defy his 1.91m, 111kg frame;
he’s second in the NRL try scoring charts with 12, and is steady and sure under the bombs that come his way. He’s also a yardage demon; in a sport where metres and momentum are so vital, few are more effective than Maumalo, who returns for the Warriors today after missing last week’s win over Cronulla due to concussion. He is third in the competition for most runs (310) and second for metres gained (3008).
He has smashed out 1008 post contact metres, well ahead of the next best and the 24-year-old also has 16 line breaks, the second highest in the NRL. “He has been massive for the team,” said Warriors front rower Agnatius Paasi. “It’s like having another prop. “For us middles, to see him come back to the 40 or halfway is so good. “When he is running it back I always smile.”

A happy hunting ground A strong team of young Mid Canterbury swimmers produced some top results at last weekend’s Canterbury Short Course Championships in Christchurch. Open to all swimmers aged 12 years and over, the Ashburton Swim Team sent seven swimmers to the event and between them they came home with a fair haul of medals. Blake Farr won the 800m freestyle and took top 10 placings in the 50m butterfly, the 100m freestyle and the 100m individual medley, while Hannah-Mae Joyce also picked up a top 10 finish in her 800m frestyle event. Hannah King won her 800m freestyle final and was third in the 200m breaststroke, as well as finishing in the top 10 in her 200m individual medley, 200m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 400m freestyle and 100m individual medley events. Bree Middleton added to her growing medal collection with a win in both her 800m and 200m freestyle finals, and took silvers in both the 50m freestyle and 200m individual medley. She also finished in the top 10 in the 100m backstroke. Bailey Tait was second in his 100m freestyle final, while Lucy Reeve took a third placing in her 300m butterfly as well as top 10 placings in the 800m freestyle and 100m butterfly. Also making a large contribution to the medal haul was Mitchell Veix, who won both his 400m individual medley and 400m freestyle events, as well as finishing second in the 50m, 200m and 100m butterfly, and third in the 200m freestyle. Veix also finished in the top 10 in his 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke and 100m freestyle races. It was a great weekend for the young team and they were back in the pool this week training hard ahead of the season’s next big challenge. On August 3 and 4 they will head to Timaru for the Timaru Winter Meet, which would be the first ever competition for some of the Ashburton club’s newest members. After that a number of swimmers are eyeing up the South Island Championships, which will be held in Dunedin from August 16-18 – an event which swimmers had to qualify for.

McLeod on the bench Methven’s Dallas McLeod has been named on the bench for the Canterbury rugby side’s first pre-season hit-out today. Canterbury will take on the Tasman Mako this afternoon in what’s been dubbed the Battle of the Mainland in Hanmer Springs. Eight Crusaders will start today’s match, with kick-off at 1.30pm.
Wall makes A final Ashburton rower Veronica Wall and her NZ Under-23 quad crew are through to their A final at the World Rowing Under-23 Championships. After a delayed start to racing due to severe weather conditions, the crew raced in a repechage on day two at Sarasota-Bradenton in the US and placed second to progress to the final. The quad finished second on day one, which put them into the repechage.
Goals galore needed Goals, goals and more goals is going to be the main focus for Mid Canterbury United’s first team today when they travel to Christchurch to take on Shirley St Albans Thunder Panthers. Mid Canterbury sit tied top of the table with the Halswell United 1964s in the Mainland Football division one competition, but are 10 goals behind on goal difference, and will need either large scoring wins or fortunate results if they are going to win division one. Their game kicks off at 2.30pm at St Albans Park, while the Mid Canterbury United second team will also face off against Shirley St Albans in Christchurch. They’re in fourth spot. They play at 2.30pm at the Burwood Domain.
Methven on top The Methven FC Senior As are on the road today looking for the latest win of what’s been a top season so far. Methven FC will take on the Christchurch United Dogs at the Christchurch Football Centre at 2.30pm, where a win will ensure they remain the team to beat in the Mainland Football division three competition. Meanwhile, the Methven FC Reserves, in the division six competition, are hosting the CTFC Newbies at the Methven Domain at 2.30pm.

After strong interest in a new-look softball tournament, which is to be held in Ashburton later this year, a get-together is being planned to discuss the tournament. On August 7 at the Ashburton Club & MSA, the meeting is open to all interested parties, players, coaches or administrators. The plan is to get everyone interested in the same room to discuss the finer details like the tournament’s format, rules, teams and entries. All are welcome to attend.

Donkeys hit the top ahead of basketball finals Team Donkey are the team to beat heading into the finals of Basketball Mid Canterbury’s men’s A grade competition. When the last round robin games wrapped up on Wednesday night at the Oxford Street stadium, Team Donkey were on top of the table with nine wins from their 12 games, giving them next week off. Team Donkey also have the bye in the final round on Wednesday night, where Newlands and Farmers Corner took out wins. Farmers Corner’s win came over College, 103-95, despite the young College side starting strong and holding a good lead at the halfway point. Farmers Corner held a slender
31-30 after the first quarter, but College fired in the second, pushing the ball up the court and putting pressure back on to Farmers Corner to lead 59-48 at the break. The third quarter was defining, as Farmers Corner took it to the young side and hit a series of three pointers, forcing College to foul, and proving deadly from the free throw line to re-establish a 80-76 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Momentum had swung, and while College rallied, two fast breaks from turnovers curtailed their fightback and gave Farmers Corner the win, in a game where the outside shooting was very good. A total of 25 three-pointers featured in the game, but it was
Farmers Corner’s inside game and offensive rebounding that was the difference between the two sides, College coach Brian Kerr said. For Farmers Corner, Xavier Bartlett was excellent from long range hitting 24 points (eight 3-pointers) while Randy Buenafe scored 29 points (five 3-pointers) with a wonderful all-round display. But the real damage came from Ramil Ilumin, who was consistently putting pressure on. For College, Quinn Ritchie top scored with 33 points (seven 3-pointers) while Fotu Hala worked hard for his 15 points and Pasi Hala cut well to the basket. In the night’s other game, Newlands got off to a good start to
lead 25-13 over Nomads at the end of the first quarter, and the second quarter was much of the same, with Nomads unable to make inroads, trailing 46-29 at the mid-point. It was the third quarter that Newlands really took a toll, as they were able to restrict Nomads to just six points whilst scoring 27. The third quarter has proven to be Nomads’ Achilles heel, but starting the final quarter down 73-35 they finally began stringing some plays together as Newlands’ play became a little loose. But the result was never really in doubt, with Newlands taking it 84-60. Newlands were able to run with pace through Marc Juntilla, Liam
O’Connor and Nick Fechney, and when the break wasn’t on they managed to run their offence efficiently. Juntilla top scored with 27, while Fechney had a good game, netting 20 points, generally through driving hard to the basket. For Nomads, Tony Gilbert worked hard all game finishing with 18 points, supported by Jamie Smitheram on 16 points. The win means Newlands finished third on the table after three rounds, while Farmers Corner were second heading into the finals. This week, Farmers Corner will take on Newlands in what is likely to be a big game at 6pm, followed by College taking on Nomads at 7.30pm, with Team Donkey having the bye.

Loved mother of Pauline, Judy, Miriam and Mark; mother-inlaw of Robert and Patrick; grandmother of the late Vicky, Peter, Megan, Rob and Kate and Great-grandmother of Regan, Alex, Alexsis and Hazel. Much loved sister of 9, survived by her loved brother John.
