Falloon road-blocked by transport minister By Sue Newman

Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon says he has been muzzled when it comes to making the case for roading improvements in the Ashburton District. Since he was elected Falloon said he had been a strong advocate for the district on both local and state highway roading issues, but his lines of communication with NZTA experts have been cut. He’s been told he can no longer speak with the agency’s officials without the permission of Transport Minister Phil Twyford. And that’s both unacceptable and undemocratic, Falloon said. “I’ve met with the South Island director and other NZTA officials on two occasions, in January and June 2018. These meetings are an important part of the work I do as our local MP, in the past we’ve talked about much-needed projects like a second bridge over the Ashburton River, lights in Tinwald, and fixing the Walnut Ave and East and West St intersections.” On March 25 Falloon sought another meeting with NZTA to talk about upcoming roading projects and to pass on concerns about trouble spots across the state highway network in Mid Canterbury. “The meeting was declined and I was told I needed to seek the

Andrew Falloon approval of Transport Minister Phil Twyford and NZTA in Wellington. I did so, and inexplicably my meeting with NZTA was again refused.” He said he accepted that if an MP wanted to visit a sensitive or hazardous site then authorisation would be needed, but in the past even those requests had been approved.. “This was a request for a meeting in an office, hardly anything that could be deemed hazardous.” Instead of a meeting, Falloon received a letter from Safe Roads director Tony Fisher highlighting a draft option plan for safety

improvements on State Highway 1. This was released last year. “Those points were quite irrelevant to the issues I wanted to raise,” Falloon said. His previous meetings with NZTA officials had been entirely professional and there were no issues that could be seen as sensitive, he said. “Phil Twyford may not like my advocacy for a four-lane highway to Christchurch, or my criticism of his decision to take $5 billion out of the state highway network, but that’s hardly an excuse to cut off my access to a government agency that’s ultimately responsible to Parliament.” Having his meetings with Government agencies vetoed affected his ability to serve the district as its MP, Falloon said. He’s not alone in finding access to NZTA officials has become off limits, with Northland MP Matt King and Waimakariri MP Matt Doocey also having a similar experience, he said. In response to Falloon’s request for reasons for his communication ban, Twyford said that Falloon had been provided with a full update from NZTA, including details on community feedback. “Andrew Falloon is playing politics. No-one wants NZTA officials tied up in meetings when they have important work to get on with,” he said.

Man ‘showed no empathy for those killed’ NZME A Christchurch businessman has pleaded guilty to two charges of distributing footage of the Al Noor Mosque attack. Philip Neville Arps – who owned a white supremacist themed insulation company – was convicted on both charges when he appeared via video link in the

Christchurch District Court yesterday. One charge was for sharing raw footage from the accused shooter’s livestream to approximately 30 people on Facebook. The other was for requesting the footage be modified by another person – having crosshairs and a “kill count” added. The court heard he intended to

distribute this modified footage as a meme. A police statement says Arps, 44, said the modified footage was “awesome” – and says he showed no empathy for the people killed. In 2016 Arps was one of a group of men who filmed themselves doing Hitler salutes as they delivered boxes of pigs heads and offal to the Al Noor mosque.

Police are looking for information from the public after a number of burglaries at commercial properties in Tinwald. Two businesses were broken into on the evening of April 24 or the early morning of April 25. The two businesses hit were the Tinwald Tavern and Kebizza Ashburton. A police spokeswoman said they had undertaken forensic examinations at both premises and that inquiries were ongoing, and that there is a possibility the two were linked. “Anyone with information should contact Police (03 307 8400, quoting file number 190425/1079) or Crimestoppers (0800 555 111),” she said. “Police take these seriously and are actively working to locate the person or persons involved.” Tinwald Tavern owner Greg

King said the burglar had managed to gain access to the main bar area, but left before stealing anything. “They have forced their way through the doors and gained access to the main bar area but the alarm has gone off after 20 seconds and they were out again and they got nothing,” he said. “We have gotten a good image on the security cameras. King said incidents like this did not happen too frequently and that a full security set-up with monitored surveillance was a big help. Last week Spice Express, which is based in the same block of shops in Tinwald as Kebizza, was also burgled. The door was forced open and broken, and the store’s till was stolen from behind the counter, while drawers were searched in the back of the restaurant.

Council to hear civic centre views By Sue Newman

Of the 169 people who took the time to make a submission on the civic centre and library planned for Ashburton, only nine will present those submissions in person. On Tuesday Ashburton District councillors will listen as those nine people share their thoughts on the project. Speakers are Edward Wood, Nigel Gilkinson for Historic Places Mid Canterbury, Angus McKay, Roger Bray, Brian Cameron, Anna Raukawa for Life Dance Academy, Fiona and John White, Reverend Heather Kennedy for the Ashbur-

ton Methodist Church and Ken Leadley. When the council put the civic centre and library out for public consultation it included four options – a $45 million build (its preferred option), a $53 million build, option three, a $41 million build and a $39 million one. Of the 169 submissions received, the majority, 46 per cent or 78 submissions, supported spending $53 million on the project and a further 32 per cent, 53 submitters supported the council’s $45 million option. An additional 4 per cent, 6 submitters, wanted a combination of options one and two.

In the submissions a range of comments were made with 46 submitters urging the council to ensure the building was built for the future, not just for today’s needs. Long-term it would be cheaper to spend $53 million today rather than cutting corners and then having to extend the complex in the future, many said. The cost and funding of the new building attracted the most comments, 48. While many of those submitters wanted more money spent there were as many who had concerns over the debt the project would incur. Including a cafe in the building did not win universal acceptance.

Of the 14 people who commented, most suggested there were already enough cafes in the area. Forty comments were made on the inclusion of performance space in the library (option two), with many of those questioning the need for this, believing this need was already being met. Of the 42 comments on library features, almost all wanted option two to ensure the new library would be a multi-purpose space that would meet the needs of the community well into the future. Out of the 169 submissions, only 5 per cent, nine submitters, supported option three, $41 million, while another 5 per cent

wanted option four. Fourteen submitters did not select a preferred option. The majority of submitters may have wanted the $53 million build, but when it came to speaking to their submissions, five of those who will appear before councillors on Tuesday, support the council’s preferred option, $45 million. Two will speak in support of the $53 million build, one for the $41 million project and one has not chosen a preferred option. Councillors will hear submissions on Tuesday morning and will then deliberate on all submissions received.

Renovations on the Ashburton St John station are well under way and are on track to be completed by mid-June. The renovations, which are expected to cost approximately $750,000, were necessary to future-proof the building. “The $750,000 renovation to the Ashburton St John station will provide space for the increased number of staff and vehicles,” Ashburton executive officer Elaine Vallender said. “The building project is on target and, while it seems like it is taking forever, is expected to be completed in mid-June.” The alterations include creating two more bedrooms, a work area and training space, and undercover parking for two ambulances. A new preparation and storage area will also be created, freeing up the old storeroom for an office. The renovation will also include a new bathroom and kitchen and new floor coverings throughout the station. Currently the ambulance operation is working out of temporary accommodation. “While this isn’t ideal, the staff are coping with the cramped conditions and the lack of space,” she said. Boil water notice lifted The Ashburton District Council has removed the precautionary boil water notice in place for the Mount Somers water supply. Residents connected to this scheme can now resume using their drinking water as normal. The council detected high levels of turbidity in the water on Monday, April 22, and issued the precautionary boil water notice. It is believed the rainfall experienced in the district at the time caused the turbidity levels to rise. A precautionary boil water notice remains in place for the Methven-Springfield supply. Residents connected to this scheme should continue to boil their drinking water, water used in food preparation and for hygiene purposes for at least three minutes before consuming. The MethvenSpringfield precautionary boil water notice will remain in place until further advised.

A father of two young children has been killed in a workplace incident yesterday. The man, believed to be in his mid-40s, was working on site at Auckland Cranes in Wiri. It is understood the man, an engineer, was crushed between a moving crane and a stationary piece of machinery. Emergency services were called just before 8am yesterday to an address in south Auckland. Auckland Cranes director Tony Gibson said staff had been in contact with the man’s family. Worksafe was investigating the death and said the incident was similar to one weeks ago in Te Puke where a man died at the Te Puke Sawmill. – NZME

Prince William paid a surprise visit to the 5-year-old girl who was shot in the Al Noor Mosque shooting last month. The little girl, Alen Alsati, received critical injuries after she was shot multiple times in the attacks on March 15. Earlier this month she woke from a coma and was unable to see, speak or eat by herself but in the weeks since has made small steps in recovery. Tourists ignore seal warning NZME

DOC communications adviser Trish Grant said seals and wild animals could become unpredictable when under stress. “Adult seals can move surprisingly quickly on land. While they can look harmless, seals can inflict serious injuries to dogs or people and can carry infectious diseases.” DOC guidelines for people around seals: • Stay at least 20 metres away. • Don’t disturb seals by making loud noises or throwing things. • Keep dogs and children away. Dogs can attack seals. • Don’t feed seals as they can become reliant on humans for food. • Never attempt to touch a seal. • If people are concerned about seals because they are in danger, injured or being harassed by people or dogs, they should call the DOC emergency hotline 0800 DOC HOT (0800 362 468).

An Auckland couple and the Department of Conservation are warning tourists about ignoring danger signs after a group approached and touched wild seals in the Tasman region. On Tuesday afternoon an Auckland couple were at Wharariki Beach in Tasman when they witnessed a group of tourists ignoring DOC warning signings. They said they saw up to a dozen tourists walk past the warning signs and make their way to a group of wild seals on the rocks. Despite warnings to keep a distance away from the animals, the group was seen patting the wild sea creatures, putting both the animals and themselves in danger. “They paid no attention to the DOC signs asking people to not harass the wildlife.” The couple decided to film the incident in the hope it would be a warning to the dangers tourists put themselves and sea life in. Children were among the tourists up close to the wild seals. The Auckland couple said they feared adults normalising interaction with wild and potentially

Former Government minister Meka Whaitiri has broken her silence about an incident last year in which she was accused of assaulting a staff member, resulting in her sacking as a minister. The staff member, a press secretary, was left with bruising after the alleged encounter with Whaitiri at an event attended by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern in Gisborne on August 27, 2018. Whaitiri, in an interview with Turanga FM in front of whanau including her mother, continued to refute the claims. “There was no altercation and there was no assault. I did not touch my staff member,” she told Turanga FM. “I growled at her for not doing her job, but I didn’t touch her.” She recounted her version of events on August 27. “We had the Prime Minister in Tairawhiti, we had five Crown ministers. So I knew as the local MP it was going to be an exciting but a very busy day,” Whaitiri told Turanga FM. Whaitiri said she had sat down for lunch with kaumatua and Ardern’s partner and baby when she noticed other ministers leaving the hall. She got up and could see through the doors that Ardern was having a stand-up press

conference outside, “surrounded by all the ministers that had accompanied her, except me”. “Clearly I was disappointed that in my neck of the woods I had lost the opportunity to stand with the Prime Minister and my colleagues. I took my staff member outside to show her the lost opportunity and to express to her, as I did, that this was her job.” Whaitiri said she did not raise her voice because she was in a public place. “Two days later I got a call from the Prime Minister’s office; it completely blindsided me.” She said she was told the Prime Minister’s office had received a complaint she had manhandled a staff member. “I immediately said I absolutely refute those allegations.” Whaitiri’s version of events is at odds with David Patten’s conclusion in his report. Patten, a Wellington lawyer who conducted an inquiry for Ministerial Services, found that, on the balance of probabilities, the staff member’s version was the more likely explanation of events. But he found it more probable that Whaitiri approached the staffer from behind and grabbed her by the arm and that Whaitiri spoke in a raised voice to the staffer.

Prince William visits Al Noor Mosque NZME We must unite to fight extremism in all its forms, Prince William said in a speech at Christchurch’s Al Noor Masjid where 42 Muslim worshippers were killed on March 15. Visiting the mosque on behalf of his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II, who turned 93 on Easter Sunday, Prince William told about 100 members of the mosque community, and dignitaries including Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, that the message from the Christchurch mosques could not be more clear. “The global idealism of hate will fail to divide us”, he said. He commended Christchurch and New Zealand for the way it had responded to the shooting on March 15 when 50 people were fatally shot at two Christchurch mosques, saying the response was an example to inspire the world. The Duke of Cambridge visited Al Noor Mosque to meet Imam Gamal Fouda and Muslim community families impacted by the Christchurch mosques terrorist attack in New Zealand. Man spiked ice cream sundaes

Name suppression for shooting accused

NZME An Auckland man has admitted to a charge of attempting to stupefy after spiking McDonald’s ice cream sundaes at a west Auckland store. The 22-year-old Rodney man pleaded guilty at the Auckland District Court in front of Judge Nevin Dawson, who continued his interim name suppression. The man had been charged with one count of attempting to stupefy after prescription medication was found in several sundaes bought from Te Atatu McDonald’s in May last year. The man was not an employee

of McDonald’s, police confirmed at the time. The people said at the time they took the ice creams home and ate them, discovering halfway through that there was prescription medication in the desserts. “We ate them at home, and we all found traces and whole pills of prescription medicine. My sister ingested one. I found one in my mouth and spat it out,” one said on social media. “The police are involved. We got off so lucky. Had a child ingested it. There would be more of an issue. I don’t know who would do such a thing but its disgusting [sic]!!”

Speaking to media, one of the people who ate the ice creams explained it all started when her sister, while eating her sundae, complained about “an extremely funny taste”. “My partner and my sister went to leave when I found one [pill] in mine. We went straight to hospital they said it was someone’s medication. But it’s not enough to do any damage so suggested keeping going with police.” A McDonald’s spokesperson last year said the investigation had cleared all staff of any wrongdoing. The man is due to be sentenced on June 20.

NZME A Waikato man has appeared in court after a Karapiro cafe worker was shot in the head on Anzac Day. The 67-year-old made a brief appearance in the Hamilton District Court yesterday afternoon before Community Magistrate Ngaire Mascelle on a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The man is accused of shooting the victim, an Asian man working at the Karapiro Cafe and Gifts on

Thursday morning, in the head. The victim was in Waikato Hospital’s high dependency unit in a serious but stable condition. Kerry Burroughs, counsel for the accused, asked for his client to be remanded in custody of mental health authorities at Waikato Hospital’s Henry Bennett Centre for assessment. He also successfully argued for the man’s name to be suppressed. It’s understood the man’s charge is likely to be upgraded. The man will reappear in court next month.

he soggy charred remains of the carpet squish with every step, blackened photo frames line shelves and shattered glass covers the floor. While it might be an alien scene to most people, the burned remains of a building are where you can expect to find a fire investigator. For fire investigators like Bevan Findlay, the objectives of investigating are simple; identify an origin and identify a cause. A fire requires three components: An ignition source, be that natural, accidental or intentional. Fuel and oxygen. “Get all three of those things in the right amounts and you will have a fire,” Findlay said. Findlay’s full job title with Fire and Emergency New Zealand is fire risk management officer and spends most of his days educating people around the dangers of fire. Unfortunately, when those messages do not fall into place, or accidents happen, Findlay has to put his fire investigating hat on. “We are on call one week in every three,” he said. “So it is myself, Craig Chambers in Timaru and someone from Christchurch covers the other week. “I could go a couple of those cycles without being called to an investigation and it would be very rare to be called to two in the same week.” Once at the scene, the investigator looks to follow the same process. They talk to the firefighters involved in fighting the fire, the homeowners and people who may have seen the fire. “We talk to firefighters about what happened at the time,

then we generally come back out in the daylight or the next day and photograph and inspect the inside and the outside of the property,” he said. The initial thing that is looked for is the general area of origin and any directional evidence that might indicate where the fire spread. “A piece of wood might be burned more on the left side than the right side and we can start to build a picture of what happened,” he said. The fire at a Chertsey home on Monday evening presented a few challenges for Findlay. “Typically the most damage is where the fire has been burning the longest, but in this case the homeowner has opened a door at the

opposite end of the house to the fire which has added more oxygen and fuelled the fire,” he said. The deepest charring and the most damage was in the kitchen and that all pointed to the fire starting in the kitchen, but the other evidence pointed to it starting in the lounge.” And while the information the homeowners provide can be important, Findlay said initially it is important to look at the scene fresh without any suggested ideas. “You talk to the owners and reconstruct the scene,” he said. “He said there was a candle unattended which of course was a strong thought, but I just had to shelve it and

follow the system. “It is a scientific process with physical evidence and you have to come up with a testable hypothesis.” There can often be small things that might throw an investigator’s initial thoughts and a logical thinking brain can often be required to get past them. “In this case there were several glass bottles that had fallen and broken behind the couch where I thought the fire may have started which threw me off and it wasn’t until I figured out that they had fallen through the burnt away couch as they couldn’t have fallen there

before the fire had started, I could rule them out as a cause,” he said. And while a glass bottle on a shelf might seem fairly innocent, they have been known to start fires in the past. “There have been cases in the past where glass bottles have magnified the light enough to start a fire and that is what we would consider a natural cause,” he said.

While the job might simply seem to be about determining the cause of fires, Findlay says the role can often take on a lot more meaning. “Ultimately our role is about reducing harm from unwanted fires,” he said. “It has been nice to see in this case there has been great support for the people in-

volved, but there was an investigator who arrived at the scene of another fire the next morning to find the family sleeping in their car outside the property so the first thing he did was ring the support networks

that he knew of to help those people out,” he said. “It is one of those roles where you have got to be prepared to go beyond the job title. “It is part of being decent. I know a lot of the community groups in town and I

always say if there is anything you need just call, if there is anything confusing around insurance, just call me.” As houses are often the most significant thing people own in terms of financial value, insurance is an important process and companies are often involved from as soon as Findlay is at a scene. “If it is a clear-cut case they will just go off my findings, if it is a bit more complicated they will often send their own fire investigator and an assessor will generally be there the next day after the fire,” he said. “They can even have electrical equipment sent away to be tested if they think it may be involved in

the fire.” While the calls to a fire may be few and far between, they do often come at late hours and can be time consuming. “The other day I was called to a fire in Timaru just after 8.30pm and got home just after midnight, including travel time, so that one wasn’t too bad,” he said. “Some take a couple of hours, but most can pretty much take up a whole day. “If it is a fire where there has been a fatality it is likely that we would have multiple investigators there and there would also be police investigators and that would take several days, but fortunately I haven’t had to deal with one yet.”

Mozambique battered again NZME Cyclone Kenneth has battered northern Mozambique with gusts of up to 280km/h after killing three people on the island nation of Comoros. Impoverished Mozambique is still recovering from another powerful tropical cyclone which made landfall farther south last month, flattening the port city of Beira and killing more than 1000 people across a swathe of southeastern Africa. A cyclone-monitoring centre on the French island of La Reunion said Kenneth made landfall at the port city of Pemba and was expected to weaken as it moved inland. The storm caused storm surges of up to five metres in some areas and rains associated with it could cause serious flooding, the centre said. A spokesman for Mozambique’s National Institute of Disaster Management (INGC) said the government had evacuated 30,000 people from areas likely to be hit by the cyclone. Mozambican officials said more than 680,000 people were at risk from the latest storm. There were concerns that five rivers and coastal waterways could burst their banks, leading to severe flooding. The Cranberries are honouring late frontwoman Dolores O’Riordan with one final album. The Irish rock act will release its eighth and last album, In the End. The band’s remaining members – Mike Hogan, Noel Hogan and Fergal Lawler – put the 11-song album together from unfinished demos found on O’Riordan’s personal hard drive after her death. “It was just like winning the Lotto,” lead guitarist Noel Hogan told the Associated Press of discovering O’Riordan’s songs. “And that was it. We had the songs.” The band agreed they would only release the album if it measured up to their and O’Riordan’s standards.

Macron offers yellow vests tax cuts NZME Emmanuel Macron has pledged tax cuts but says the French would also have to work more as he outlined his response to months of anti-government protests. Macron is under pressure to quell nearly six months of “yellow vest” demonstrations that have brought weekly havoc to cities nationwide. A first salvo of measures offered last December and worth 10 billion euros failed to calm anger among low-income workers. Macron, who has struggled to shake off the moniker “president of the rich” over his past as an investment banker, said he wanted a “significant” cut in income tax, which would be financed by closing loopholes some companies benefit from. He said government spending would also be squeezed and the French would have to work longer hours. The tax cuts, which come at a time when France is battling to keep its budget deficit in check and stick to European Union

rules, would be worth around 5 billion euros, he said. “We must work more, I’ve said it before. France works much less than its neighbours. We need to have a real debate on this,” Macron told an audience of journalists at the Elysee Palace. Macron said he also wanted to get the French more involved in the democratic process by making it easier to hold referendums on some issues. A new push to decentralise government, breaking away from the historic “centrist” method where all is decided in Paris, would also be made within a year, and no more schools or hospitals would be closed without backing from the local mayor. Although the number of demonstrators has declined since a peak in November, protesters clashed with police for a 23rd straight week last Saturday, with the sustained unrest having a draining effect on business, tourism and the economy. This latest response is the result of a three-month long national debate, during which Macron discussed issues from high

taxes to local democracy with groups of citizens at town hall meetings around the country. Dubbed the “great debate”, it also involved one meeting where he stayed up debating issues of state with philosophers until after midnight. Despite the criticism levelled at him, and opinion poll ratings that have fallen to around 30 per cent, Macron stuck to his guns on his policy platform, saying his government had already implemented many reforms and would go on. The yellow vest street rebellion erupted over planned diesel tax hikes but quickly morphed into a broader backlash against inequality and a political elite perceived as having lost touch with ordinary voters. Macron, who swept to power promising to “transform France” and “make work pay”, has seen his ambitious reform agenda derailed, or at least knocked off target, by the unrest. Pension and unemployment insurance reforms planned for 2019 have made little progress so far.

Central Canada hit by flooding NZME Rising waters are prompting further evacuations in central Canada, with the mayor of the country’s capital, Ottawa, declaring a state of emergency and Quebec authorities warning that a hydroelectric dam was at risk of breaking. Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson declared the emergency in response to rising water levels along the Ottawa River and weather forecasts that called for significant rainfall. In a statement on Twitter, Watson asked for help from the Ontario provincial government and the country’s military. He warned that “flood levels are currently forecasted to exceed the levels that caused significant damage to numerous properties in the city of Ottawa in 2017”.

Facebook and its fully-owned subsidiary Instagram filed a lawsuit in US federal court against one company and three people based in New Zealand for allegedly selling fake followers, the social network’s director of platform enforcement and litigation Jessica Romero said in a post yesterday. The post does not name the company, but a rep for Facebook has told media that it is Social Media Series – which was founded in 2016 and has three director shareholders: Arend Alexander Hubert Nollen of Upper Hutt, Leon Francis Hedges of Upper Hutt and David James Pekka Pasanen of Lower Hutt. Its registered business address is a private home.

The defendants operated a service that provided fake likes, views and followers to Instagram users, Romero alleges. “The complaint alleges the company and individuals used different companies and websites to sell fake engagement services to Instagram users. We previously suspended accounts associated with the defendants and formally warned them in writing that they were in violation of our Terms of

Use. However, their activity persisted.” By filing the lawsuit, we are sending a message that this kind of fraudulent activity is not tolerated on our services, and we will act to protect the integrity of our platform, Romero said. The lawsuit specifically asks the court to prevent the defendants from: • Engaging and profiting in the sale of fake likes, views and followers on Instagram • Violating our Terms of Use and Community Guidelines • Violating the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act and other California laws for distributing fake likes on Instagram even after their access was revoked and their accounts were suspended.

Chinese buying revives monthly exports By Rebecca Howard NZME

New Zealand’s exports hit a record in March amid revived Chinese demand for local dairy, meat and forestry products. The value of total goods exports lifted 19 per cent to $5.7 billion last month from March 2018. At the same time, imports shrank 3.5 per cent to $4.8 billion, Stats NZ said. The monthly trade balance was a surplus of $922 million, the largest since the April 2011 record of $1.2 billion. Economists had expected a monthly surplus of $116 million, according to a Bloomberg poll. February’s trade surplus of $12 million was revised to a deficit of $68 million.

“Exports to China were the leading contributor to increases in several primary sector commodities including dairy products, beef, lamb, and forestry products,” international statistics manager Tehseen Islam said. Exports to China were up 52 per cent at $1.5 billion in March. Exports of dairy products led the overall rise in exports, up 22 per cent to $1.4 billion. This rise was led by milk powder, up $226 million from a year earlier. The increase was driven by a larger quantity, but unit values also rose, up 6.5 per cent on March 2018, Stats NZ said. The value of cheese exports rose $42 million, while butter exports fell, also by $42 million.

Other main contributors to the rise in total exports were meat and edible offal, food preparations such as infant formula, forestry products, and fruit. The decline in imports was due to a 20 per cent slide in purchases of petroleum and products to $516 million. Vehicles, parts and accessory imports were down 11 per cent at $717 million while aircraft and parts imports were down 54 per cent at $71 million. In seasonally adjusted terms, the March surplus was $201 million, the first since December 2017. The annual deficit was $5.6 billion in the March 2019 year. Economists had expected a deficit of $5.3 billion.

Barnes, who founded Perpetual Guardian and successfully implemented a four-day working week for his workforce last year, says productivity increases, staff are happier and there are flow-on benefits for society and companies when staff work fewer hours – contrary to the traditional view of big business. Tech founder Elon Musk and China’s second-richest man Jack Ma, who founded one of the largest internet companies in the world, Alibaba, have come under fire in recent weeks for their views on excessive work hours among employees. Ma recently endorsed a 12-hour work day, calling it a “huge blessing” for young workers. ournalism, in it’s entirety, is a complex and always changing beast. No two days are ever the same and it’s a role in which individuals must be willing to constantly adapt to meet the needs of change. The role of a news agency, is no different. Newspapers, websites, radio stations and television shows are constantly having to change their focus, introduce new features and keep minds stimulated to ensure they remain in hold of a captive audience. Readers having to pay for premium content, isn’t a big thing in New Zealand. Here, it’s a little different – the Ashburton Guardian was the first newspaper in the country to put its content behind a paywall – but

even we’ve relaxed that ruling a little bit allowing for some exclusive content for free through our website or on the Ashburton App. But for the majority of New Zealanders, it’s a completely foreign innovation. That’s all about to change though. The New Zealand Herald announced yesterday that, from next week, they will launch digital subscriptions with premium content being uploaded across many

facets of their news divisions including; business, politics, news, sport, lifestyle and entertainment as well as special features. It’s a bold move, but someone had to be the first major news organisation to do it and the Herald is biting the bullet and hooking into it. The cost will be $5 a week – the price of a good cup of coffee, but whether it’s worth the expenditure will remain to be seen with no real idea on what kind of content is going to go into hiding behind the paywall. Where the challenge will sit though is providing a point of difference and ensuring that the news that is being placed within that realm isn’t readily accessible from other avenues, most importantly NZME’s main rival, Stuff.

The numbers will look good from the outset though, with all current subscribers to the Herald and NZME’s five regional newspapers, The Northern Advocate, Bay of Plenty Times, Rotorua Daily Post, Hawke’s Bay Today and Whanganui Chronicle, gaining automatic access. As more and more people turn to digital devices to get their news fix at various points throughout the day, one can only presume that this announcement is the tip of the iceberg for online news in this country. As much as we might want to hide ourselves from the truth sometimes, the days of a printed newspaper do seem numbered in some sense with so much focus being pumped into technology and the ability to give informa-

tion in such a fast and prompt manner to those in need of it. So, we can’t stand here with our hands on our hearts and say that in two, three or four years’ time we’ll be still doing things exactly the same as what we are now – but we are confident we’ll still be here. Things change so quickly in this beast that we call the news world and if you don’t keep up you stand to get well and truly left behind. Don’t be alarmed by the fact that the Herald is to slowly but surely start putting content behind a paid subscription – in many ways, it’s just the subscription of newspapers transferring over to a digital platform to meet the demands of the everyday Kiwi citizen.

Fighting social media By Damien Venuto NZME

E

fforts by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and French President Emmanuel Macron to bring the world together against online extremism and terrorism face a major obstacle: the President of the United States of America. The dangers posed by social media are certainly global, but the companies at the centre of the mess are American – and that doesn’t bode well for any hope of constraining them through regulation. First off, the US already has a long history of not playing ball with the rest of the world. The superpower has withdrawn from or declined to ratify the International Criminal Court, the Kyoto Protocol, the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty and, most recently, the Paris Climate Accord. Each of those was an attempt to deal with a major global issue, but in each instance the US went its own way. If the threat of nuclear apocalypse wasn’t quite enough to bring the US on side, what hope do a few social media posts have? Under a President who has pledged to put America first and had few qualms about raising international tensions with a series of trade fights, there’s little indication that the US will suddenly adopt a global approach when sitting down with the G7 leaders next month. If recent reports out of the US are anything to go by, the country is already charging down a different path from the rest of the world. At a private meeting on Tuesday, President Donald Trump met Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey to discuss the importance of “pro-

tecting the health of the public conversation ahead of the 2020 US elections”. This followed numerous accusations of bias, with Trump claiming conservative voices were being silenced amid social media companies’ efforts to clamp down on extremist content and fake accounts. While the rest of the world is concerned about how little is being done to curb extremism online, the message from the most powerful politician in the US seems to be that social media’s censorship efforts sometimes go too far and that tech giants wield too much power over public discourse. With these two world views set to meet next month, it could devolve into a collision course rather than a collaborative show of unity. Where do we draw the line? As the volume dials up on calls for stronger regulation of social media, the free speech acolytes are also becoming louder in airing their concerns about the impact any regulatory efforts might have on online freedom. Ardern isn’t oblivious to that debate and was quick to distance the G7 meeting from any consideration of free speech. “This isn’t about freedom of expression,” she said during a press conference on Wednesday. “This is about preventing violent extremism and terrorism online. I don’t think anyone would argue that the terrorist on the 15th of March had a right to livestream the murder of 50 people. And that is what this call is specifically focused on.” These points are all valid, but any steps to clamp down on the publishing or distribution of content will invariably lead to questions about what is and isn’t appropriate. Even viewed in a

vacuum, Ardern’s specific focus poses complex questions: what do we define as terrorism? what types of groups do we allow on social media? and do we continue to permit anyone in the world to livestream when they please? The Ted Talk stage recently provided a glimpse of how seemingly simple problems can become complex when they play out on social media. When asked why Twitter simply doesn’t get rid of Nazis, Dorsey explained that even something as widely reviled as Nazism can be difficult to define on social media. “We’re in a situation right now where that term is used fairly loosely, and we just cannot take any one mention of that word accusing someone else as a factual indication that they should be removed from the platform,” Dorsey said. Like the rest of the tech world, the Twitter boss is betting heavily on the potential of artificial intelligence to eventually allow truly offensive and harmful content to be weeded out efficiently and effectively. But until that happens, many of the tough decisions on social media are being out-sourced to human eyes, like those of the content moderators cramped into Mumbai offices and charged with the responsibility of identifying fake news on Facebook in the lead-up to the Indian election. Prepare for a tech fight Social media organisations get away with such a bare-minimum response to fake news and extreme content only because they have long been able to hide behind the fact that they are only platforms, not media channels. This rule remains enshrined in the Communications Decency Act passed by Congress in 1996,

and there have been few indications of it changing any time soon. Without the burden of having to employ the staff numbers necessary to run a media company responsibly, the big tech companies’ profits have soared. And the tech giants aren’t simply going to sit back and watch their margins being ripped apart by the efforts of a few foreign governments. Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg has already called in reinforcements, this week appointing Jennifer Newstead as general counsel, tasked with defending Facebook as international pressure mounts. Newstead isn’t your standard, run-of-the-mill lawyer. She was plucked straight out of Trump’s State Department and previously played a major role in selling the Patriot Act to the US Congress. That controversial piece of legislation was developed in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks and greatly increased the US government’s ability to conduct surveillance on its own citizens. If anything, this sends a strong message that Facebook won’t be a pushover as it starts to work with governments on reshaping social media in a world that no longer accepts the hands-off approach. Ardern and Macron better come prepared for a fight. leek. Cover and cook over a low heat until soft, but not coloured, about 10 minutes. Add the red pepper, carrot and courgette, cover and cook for a further 2-3 minutes. ■■ Pour in the tomatoes and vegetable stock and cook for 20 minutes until all the vegetables are tender. Using a stick blender, blend until nearly smooth, leaving behind a few chunky pieces. Set aside to reheat when ready to use. ■■ Potato wedges: Peel or scrub the potatoes and cut lengthwise into chunky, but even-sized wedges, 6-8cm long and 3-4cm thick. ■■ Blanch the wedges for 5 minutes in lightly salted boiling water. Drain and quickly dry off over the heat. Place in a shallow roasting dish and pour over the oil, toss well to coat each wedge

of potato. Sprinkle over paprika. Place in the oven and roast for 25-30 minutes, turning once during cooking until golden and cooked through. ■■ Beef: Rub the steaks with a dash of oil and season. Heat a barbecue grill until hot (or heat a large frying pan over a high heat). ■■ Place steaks on the grill for 3-4 minutes, then turn over and cook for a further 3-4 minutes for medium steak. Remove from the heat and place on a warmed plate. ■■ Cover loosely with foil and leave to rest for 5 minutes. Two top netballers were in Ashburton yesterday delivering a coaching programme aimed at making both better players, and better people. Anna Kennedy (nee Thompson) and Hayley Saunders spent years playing top level netball in New Zealand, with Kennedy pulling on the black dress of the Silver Ferns on 13 occasions, but after calling time on their playing careers both are now focused on the future. They first came together as a coaching duo in the form of Hayley and Anna Netball, but they’ve recently rebranded as HeadStart

Sport + Life and are branching out into other sports, and looking at life outside of sport. Yesterday, HeadStart made its first visit to Ashburton and the duo hosted coaching clinics for kids aged from Year 5 right up to Year 13 at the EA Networks Centre. In a way the coaching is their chance to give back to the game that has given them so much, but it’s also a chance to stay involved in the sport and help shape the game’s future stars. Saunders – who now lived in Mt Maunganui – said they spied a gap in the market when it came to netball coaching, and while they focus on basic skills, they also want

to encourage the development of every player’s individual spark, and give them confidence on the court which extends to life off the court. “We find it really rewarding when kids are like ‘wow, I didn’t know I could do that’,” Saunders said. Hearing a parent say that their child’s confidence off the court has increased, too, is the biggest reward, she said. Saunders played 95 games for Waikato/Bay of Plenty before calling time on her ANZ Championship career at the end of last season. After nine years of top level netball, she knows what it takes to

get to the top, but she also knows how important it is for kids to simply be involved. She said life can be tough for kids these days, with so many added pressures that weren’t around 20 years ago, and that’s why they decided to add the life component into their coaching programme. “We don’t want to be a platform for good kids to get better, we want to be for everyone,” Saunders said. Kennedy said the life side of the programme is about looking at the other side of sport and how they can help people off the court as well. Kennedy – who married for-

mer professional rugby player Ross Kennedy late last year – said they’ve already expanded their services to include rugby, with the help of her husband, and they are eyeing up other sports, too. This is Kennedy’s first full season of not playing top level netball in 14 years. She didn’t intend to play last year, but ended up playing half a season for the Northern Stars team in the ANZ Championship. She’s still playing club netball, and although her high level days are behind her, don’t go calling her retired. “I always said I would never say that word,” she said.

With just three rounds to go before play-offs, it’s crunch time for a number of teams in rugby’s Luisetti Seeds Combined Country Cup. Every point from here on in is vital, and one team hopeful of picking up their second win on the trot, to give their finals hopes a real shot in the arm today, is Celtic. They’re at home to Hurunui, a side that – going on results so far this season alone – they should beat. But the Shane Enright coached side is not taking anything for granted. While Celtic have picked up two wins from their four games so far this season, the games they’ve lost have been by reasonable margins, and they hurt. The defending Mid Canterbury Rugby champions have been struggling for numbers in 2019. An exodus of players from the side that broke a long Watters Cup drought last season, combined with a bad run of injuries, have given Enright a massive headache. But, despite the challenges they’ve faced, they’re still well and truly in the mix for the finals. This year’s combined competition format is different from previous years. It’s now three pools, with the top two teams from each pool going straight into the quarter finals. They’ll be joined by the two next best teams from a combined points table, who will be given wildcards. With three games to go, Celtic’s pool C is heading for an interesting finish. It’s the only team with no unbeaten teams, with Prebbleton on top with 17 points and Lincoln second on 16. Celtic are fifth, but only seven points behind Prebbleton. The only pool where you’d have to say that, with three games remaining, a Mid Canterbury side should make the finals, is pool A.

Henry Miller and his Celtic team-mates are at home to Hurunui today. Southern are one of two unbeaten sides in pool A, and today in Darfield they’ll face off against the other unbeaten side. Southern has taken maximum points from its four games so far, including an easy five points in the Easter weekend round after Hampstead were forced to default. Defaulting the Good Friday match wasn’t an easy decision for Hampstead, but they simply didn’t have the numbers due largely to players being tied up with church commitments.

Hampstead have one bonus point win and two extra bonus points to their name after four games, and are still a mathematical chance of making the playoffs. Today they are off to Kaiapoi to play the team just three points ahead of them on the points table. In pool B, two Mid Canterbury teams feature. Rakaia and Methven battled it out under lights at the Methven Domain last weekend, with the visitors coming out on top, moving Rakaia to fourth position on the pool B leader-

board. Rakaia are at home today against Oxford in a crossover match between pool B and pool C, where a win will give them a welcome push up the table. They could be third by the end of today if second placed Glenmark-Cheviot get up against third placed Southbridge. Methven are also at home today, but they have a big ask ahead of them. They’re fifth on the table on six points with just one win so far, and their opposition at the Methven Domain today is Springston – the only other side

in the same position as Southern, unbeaten, top of the table, and on maximum points. Meanwhile, Ashburton Celtic’s first women’s team will play their first competition game at home today. They’re set to host Burnside – a team they beat pre-season – in a Canterbury Metro women’s championship match at 1pm. All of the Mid Canterbury teams in the combined country men’s competition will kick off at 2.45pm at their respective venues.

Mo’unga signs three-year deal with New Zealand Rugby NZME

Richie Mo’unga has re-signed for another three years.

One of the rising stars of New Zealand Rugby, All Blacks and Crusaders first five-eighth Richie Mo’unga, has re-signed with New Zealand Rugby, his Super Rugby club and his Canterbury province, inking a new deal through to 2022. The news is further good news for New Zealand Rugby, which has extended contracts with several All Blacks in recent weeks, including Aaron Smith, Ngani Laumape, Nathan Harris, Liam Coltman, Patrick Tuipulotu and Dalton Papalii, with a strong core of experienced players committed to New Zealand Rugby post-2019. Twenty-four-year-old Mo’unga made his provincial debut for Canterbury in 2013 and his Investec Super Rugby debut with the Crusaders three years later. He first played for the All Blacks

against a France XV on the Vista Northern Tour in 2017 and made his full test debut against France last year in Dunedin. He has played nine tests to date. Mo’unga said: “I’m really fortunate to have had some amazing opportunities with Canterbury, the Crusaders, and the All Blacks, and I feel there is still plenty I want to achieve in New Zealand rugby, which was a huge motivation for me to re-commit. “I’m really grateful to be part of a club that means a lot to me and that has given me the opportunity to better myself as a rugby player and as a person. “I want to keep striving to be the best I can be, which ultimately is why I’ve made the decision to stay in this environment.” All Blacks Head Coach Steve Hansen said: “Congratulations to Richie on his re-signing. He is de-

Mustang changes slammed AAP Former champion John Bowe says the decision to force mid-season aerodynamic changes on Ford’s all-conquering Mustang makes a mockery of the Supercars championship. Supercars announced on Tuesday testing had shown the Mustang held an unfair aerodynamic advantage over its Holden and Nissan rivals. The championship has ordered alterations be made to the car ahead of next week’s event in Perth, mainly to the vehicle’s rear wing. Rivals have long claimed the Mustang held an unfair advantage under Supercars regulations which prevent significant disparity between competing cars. Led by DJR Team Penske star Scott McLaughlin, the Mustang has won nine out of 10 races in 2019. Bowe said the situation bore similarities to his championship winning year in 1995 when the undertray of his Falcon had to be trimmed ahead of that season’s endurance events. “Just goes to show that the squeaky wheel usually gets the oil,” Bowe said on his Facebook page. “I’m a racing and car guy, but this sort of thing going on in the midst of the season makes a mockery of the series. “It reminds me of 1993 and 1995 when the whinging (sic) from Holden had changes made mid season. Captain Maddison takes charge By Erin Tasker

Opposition players sometimes take Maddison Foster a bit lightly on the football field, but it’s a mistake they generally only make once. For much of her young playing career so far the 13-year-old has been the only girl in a boys’ team, playing in a boys’ competition, and that’s just the way she likes it. That’s because it makes Foster a better player. The Ashburton girl, who attends Mount Hutt College is not one to shy away from the action or take a back seat, and she’s not afraid to make her voice heard on the pitch. This season, her voice is being heard a lot more than usual. Foster has this season been made captain of the Mid Canterbury United 13th grade team – a challenge she’s enjoying. She’s the only girl in the team, and often the only girl on the field, but she’s happy being the boss. From her position at centre back she gets a pretty good view of the game and what her team-mates should be doing. She loves the game, and she knows the game. Foster said her first taste of football came at school, playing with friends, and she enjoyed the schoolyard games so much she decided to sign up to play. Her first official season, five years ago, was spent in the local Mid Canterbury competition and the following season she trialled for, and made, her first Mid Canterbury travelling team.

For the past four seasons, she’s spent her Saturday mornings taking to the field in Mainland Football competitions for Mid Canterbury United, which involves travelling to Christchurch pretty much every second weekend, and this year her team is in the Mainland Football 13th grade division one competition. During the school holidays, she was selected to attend a Federation Talent Centre camp at English Park in Christchurch and while there she learnt a lot and got to train and play alongside some of the top 13th grade girls from the top half of the South Island. She loved it, and while she knows there’s definite pathways to get to the top available to young girls in football these days, Foster isn’t sure what her future holds. “Some days I feel like I want to play as a job, and other days I just want to play it more socially,” Foster said. At 13, she’s got plenty of time to decide which path she wants to take, and for now her attention is simply on doing her best for the Mid Canterbury United 13th grade side. The team started the season with a win and a loss before breaking for the school holidays, and today they’re back in action, travelling to Christchurch’s Burnside Park to take on FC Twenty 11 13 Red. Later this season, in the September school holidays, the team will head to Queenstown for the South Island tournament.

Methven FC keen to resume season After a disruptive start to their season, the Methven FC Seniors are hopeful they might actually get out onto the football field today. A default against them to start the season and a late cancellation due to a team dropping to a lower grade last weekend mean that Methven FC have only had one actual game in the Mainland Football division three competition so far this season, and that was a loss. A team that started the season with high hopes, having taken out the division four competition last season and earning themselves promotion to division three, Methven FC’s players are – not surprisingly – chomping at the bit to get out there and show people what they can do. Today, they’ll get the chance to do that in Christchurch when they take on Coastal Spirit D3s at Cuthberts Green at 2.30pm. Back home, at the Methven Domain, the club’s division six side – the Methven FC Reserves – will be looking to give their home fans something to cheer about. They’re hosting the Halswell United Globetrotters today at 2.30pm at the Methven Domain.

Mid Canterbury United has a team in the same competition and they’re also at home today in what’s expected to be one of their toughest games of the season so far. Mid Canterbury United are currently unbeaten on top of the division six leaderboard and they will today host Oxford FC, another unbeaten team, at 2.30pm at the Ashburton Domain. The team that Methven FC’s Seniors were meant to play in division three last weekend – the Christchurch United Pressies – has dropped down to division six, meaning it’s now a 14-team competition. Meanwhile, in the Mainland Football division one competition, Mid Canterbury United are on the road to the CTFC Turtles today. Both sides have two wins each so far this season, so on that they appear to be similarly matched sides. Both sides are going into the match off the back of convincing wins in their last outings. That game will be played at Garrick Memorial Park in Christchurch at 2.30pm today.

Kiwi caught up in Fleche Wallonne crash carnage NZME Kiwi cyclist Dion Smith was one of the victims of a crash-filled finale at Fleche Wallonne. Smith, who has been impressive in a helping role in his first season with the Mitchelton-Scott squad, was one of several riders unable to finish the Belgian classic after going down hard in a crash with 35 kilometres to go. The 26-year-old, who had claimed top 25 finishes in his last two classics – the Amstel Gold Race and Brabantse Pijl – despite not being the lead rider for his team, was forced to withdraw after the painful landing, and he wasn’t the last rider to have to do so. Remarkably, only one of the seven riders from Mitchelton-Scott – Australian climber Damien Howson – was able to finish the race, with all of his team-mates coming unstuck in crashes, including one of the favourites for the race, Adam Yates. “Six out of seven riders were involved in crashes, some of them multiple,” confirmed Mitchelton-Scott head sport director Matt White. “Lucky for us is that nobody was seriously injured but obviously Adam Yates going down with Nick Schultz and four or five others coming in with one lap to go, that was our day done.” Two of the worst-off riders were Domenico Pozzovivo, who suffered concussion after a particularly heavy landing, and fellow veteran Roman Kreuziger, who left a lot of skin on the road after being caught up in the same incident.

With just two games to go in round one, things are starting to get interesting in the Canterbury Rugby League division one competition. The unbeaten Marist Saints are the unexpected team to beat at the top of the table, with the defending champion Burnham Chevaliers and the Ashburton Barbarians in second place with both having won two from three. Burnham beat the Barbarians in the opening game of the season, while Marist are the Barbarians’ opposition in their last game of round one next weekend, and they know that will be a big one. But today the Barbarians players have just one thing on their minds, and that’s getting win number three on the board for the season when they come up against the Shirley Hawks. The Barbarians are off to Christchurch to play Shirley this afternoon at McFarlane Park and will be hoping to ensure that the Hawks’ winless start to the season continues. They’re in a pretty good position to do that too, having blown the Halswell Hornets off the park in their last outing, on their home turf at Robilliard Park on Good Friday. The Barbarians were unstoppable against the Halswell team – the club’s first division one side in more than five years – and although they had a good win, 6618, Barbarians coach Steve Gamble said it was far from perfect. While happy with the 66 points his side scored, he wasn’t happy with the 18 points they let in. Against a side like Marist or Burn-

They opened their account with a win before having a week off due to the school holidays, but today Hampstead will be back on the turf. The Mid/South Canterbury senior hockey competitions get back under way again today with Mid Canterbury’s sole women’s team – Hampstead – off to Timaru

for the second time this season, and hopeful of coming back with the same result. In round one Hampstead came away with a convincing win over the Craighead 1st XI, 5-0. and today they will face another young and fit side in the form of the competition’s other school side - the Timaru Girls’ High School (TGHS) 1st XI. TGHS didn’t have such a good

day at the office when the competition got under way a couple of weeks ago, beaten 6-1 by Geraldine. Hampstead took out the round robin competition in 2018, but lost the knock-out final to Cambridge – their only loss of the season. Cambridge started 2019 with a bye and will take on Craighead today.

Meanwhile, Mid Canterbury’s sole men’s team in the Mid/South competition, Wakanui, has the bye today. It makes for an odd start to the season – a 4-1 win over Northern Hearts in round one followed by two weeks off before they take to the turf again – but today’s bye was actually at Wakanui’s request due to a number of players unavailable.

They’ll be back into the business end of things next weekend with an away game against Tainui in Timaru. One team that will be in action on the Ashburton hockey turf this weekend will be the Opuke-Hakatere team in the Mid/South Canterbury division two women’s competition. They’re at home to Craighead’s second XI at 1.40pm tomorrow.

Pitman savours HK experience Riccarton trainer Michael Pitman is enjoying the build-up to racing at Sha Tin on Sunday as his class sprinter Enzo’s Lad gets set to contest the $HK16 million Gr.1 the Chairman’s Sprint Prize (1200m). The Kiwi conditioner is enjoying every minute of his time in Hong Kong, as he takes in what is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Pitman, who prepares the dual Group one winner with son Matthew, was happy to answer questions when attending a media briefing prior to the all-important barrier draw for Sunday where his charge drew favourably in gate two. “He’s got a good temperament and I couldn’t be happier,” Pitman said. “Up here it is phenomenal what the Hong Kong Jockey Club

do for horses, they get so well treated. “He flew in from Sydney and within half an hour the vets had taken a blood test and within an hour we had the results, which I don’t think would happen in too many places in the world. “His blood was perfect after two days of travelling. He’s a dude, he’s pretty laidback for a sprinter, he doesn’t get worked up, he’s push-button.” Pitman said he was gradually trying to acclimatise his six-yearold speedster to the humid surrounds of Sha Tin. “We have got to go out and race in the heat,” Pitman said. “We’re in air-conditioned boxes and we started out at 21 degrees, but we’re gradually putting the temperature up to try to get him used to it.”

The 63-year-old is understandably proud of his dual Group One winning sprinter, who earned his ticket to Hong Kong care of victory in the Gr.1 Telegraph (1200m) back in January when winning the Trentham dash for the second time. “He ran 1:06 and change when he won the Telegraph the second time around and he had 58kgs on his back,” Pitman said. “He is the first horse since Mr Tiz, one of the best gallopers in Australasia of his time, to win the Telegraph back-to-back. “I couldn’t get to sleep that night wondering where I could run this horse. He was weighted out of New Zealand racing. “I rang Mark Player (of the Hong Kong Jockey Club) at midnight because they indicated he could have come last year. I said

to Mark ‘you better put me in the hat for going to Hong Kong’ and we’re here. “At the moment, we’ve got a ticket in a $NZ2.5 million raffle and we’re here because we deserve to be here and I am pretty proud of that, to be honest.” While proud to be flying the flag for New Zealand on the international scene, Pitman is also a great advertisement of what a can-do attitude can achieve. The trainer has overcome several set-backs in his life, most recently battling bowel cancer that has led to him shedding 33kgs, but the top-five New Zealand trainer has continued to make the most out of life. “Back in August I got diagnosed with cancer quite badly, but I’m all right. Peter McKay had contemplated turning out his talented sprinting three-year-old Cavallo Veloce after his stakes placing at Hastings earlier this month. The Matamata trainer was delighted with the O’Reilly colt’s recent performances. “I was halfway thinking he’d done enough. He’d given us confidence that he could foot it with the best sprinters for next season,” McKay said. “But when it’s a Group race back against his own age group so close to home, we had to have a go.” Cavallo Veloce, whom McKay races with his wife Kim and Te Awamutu businessman Wayne John, looks one of the best chances in a vintage Gr.3 Inglis Sales Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) at Te Rapa on Saturday. McKay said his charge had trained on well since Hastings and, from barrier six, he was hoping to get an economical run in the first half of the field before unleashing his trademark dazzling sprint. “He seems to have a pretty good turn of foot over 1200m. Over 1200m, he relaxes well and then he can really reel off a quick closing sectional,” McKay said. Cavallo Veloce hasn’t raced beyond 1400m so far but that wasn’t McKay’s intention. “We had been hoping to get him ready for the 2000 Guineas (Gr.1, 1600m) and then for the Karaka Million (1600m) but he had bad boils when he was getting prepared for those races and missed work and we had to keep freshening him up. McKay said Cavallo Veloce would spell after the Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes and he was keen to test his charge over 1600m in the spring. “Shaun [McKay, jockey] says he might pull for the first couple of strides in his races but as soon as he sits behind another horse he drops the bit and relaxes so hopefully he can get a strong mile.” - NZ Racing Desk
