Thousands of Mid Cantabrians reflected on the sacrifices made by their fellow New Zealanders in war at Anzac services across the district yesterday. Prince to meet with attack victims NZME Prince William has arrived in Christchurch to pay the royal family’s respects to the victims of the March 15 mosque shootings. William, the Duke of Cambridge, flew in from Auckland, where, with Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, he attended the 11am Anzac Day Civic Service at the Auckland War Memorial at the domain. He laid a wreath on behalf of his grandmother the Queen but did not address the crowd. Security was tight at the domain: armed police guarded the approaches to the service and security staff stood, backs to the prince, scanning the crowd in all directions. Some who attended yesterday morning’s dawn service at the domain stayed on to see the prince.

Audrey Tolua, who is visiting from Napier with her niece and nephew, toured the Auckland War Memorial Museum after the early service and decided to stay. Remuera West Scouts John and Daniel Hayes, who had marched with other scouts at the 9am Anzac service in Newmarket, secured prime spots on the museum steps to watch the royal visit. “We came to see Prince William and Jacinda Ardern,” said John, 15. In Christchurch, the prince will meet survivors of the mosque terror attacks and their families. Buckingham Palace said of his visit: “The duke will meet with those affected by the attack and will pay tribute to the extraordinary compassion and solidarity that the people of New Zealand have displayed in recent weeks.”

Race death a tragic accident A police and WorkSafe investigation into the death of a motorcyclist at the Mountain Thunder street race in Methven two years ago found it was accidental. Chief Coroner Deborah Marshall said she accepted the findings of both investigations and that the death of Ruaraidh Mor McLeod had been a tragic accident.

McLeod, 25, was a carpenter living at Governors Bay and taking part in his first road circuit race when he crashed into a barrier after losing control at a corner. The annual Mountain Thunder event had been organised by the Methven Lions Club for nine years previously and the race was held on a closed circuit that had hay bales at the corners to act as a

primary crash barrier. The crash was investigated by government regulator WorkSafe and the police serious crash unit, who obtained film footage of the crash from a spectator. McLeod’s motorcycle was found to be in sound mechanical condition. A police investigator concluded he braked heavily for the turn, locking the rear wheel

up. He lost control as he tried to correct, hitting the barrier at about 57km/h. He somersaulted from the bike on to the footpath behind the safety barrier and suffered impact injuries to the head. McLeod had been racing motorcycles on tracks for 18 months, but was not experienced on road surfaces. WorkSafe looked at the safety

features of the track, including the use of hay bales as safety barriers and found that there had been no breach of health and safety legislation. The coroner said she accepted the conclusions of the two investigations. “Mr McLeod’s death was a tragic accident.” The club has not held a street race since the fatality.

Mosque survivor stands with Kiwis Christchurch mosque shooting survivor Mustafa Boztas, 21, attended the Anzac Day dawn service yesterday morning after being discharged from hospital earlier this week. Boztas, who moved to New Zealand from Turkey 10 years ago, said he wanted to show solidarity and stand with other Kiwis

as one. “I’m from Turkey and this is my 10th year coming to Anzac Day. “I came to show my support, and respect and honour our granddads, fathers and sons.” He says he didn’t feel like he was in danger. “I knew it was safe to be here.” Prince William was in

Christchurch yesterday. “I’m looking forward to meeting Prince William and the Prime Minister. It’s good to see him support us,” Boztas said. Boztas was shot in the leg at the Al Noor Mosque. Thousands gathered in central Christchurch for an especially poignant dawn service just five

weeks after New Zealand’s worst ever terror attack in the city. Security around Cranmer Square near Hagley Park was tight with more than 30 armed police and roads blocked off. Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel said the “recent atrocity perpetrated on our city” has given everyone cause to pause and

reflect. Dalziel said it was extraordinary that Turkey today lets Kiwis and Australia visit the old Anzac battleground every year which is now a memorial to peace. Three flags hung limp in the calm morning air by the cenotaph: New Zealand, Australia and Turkey. – NZME

Swinging stoush NZME The official world record holder for the longest marathon on a swing says a Napier teen’s consistent rest breaks will likely invalidate his world record claim. But Charlie O’Brien says the methods that helped him clock up a total of 33 hours and 11 minutes on a park swing in Taradale Park last Thursday were both sensible and legal. The back-and-forth is the latest development in a saga that has gone up and down for O’Brien since he sat on the swing and pendulumed himself into Hawke’s Bay legend. Video footage, log books and

statements all need to be assessed before O’Brien can take the title, but current world record holder Aimee Pivott, from Pukekohe, says he won’t. Pivott swung for 32 hours two minutes and three seconds in October 2013. The mum-of-two beat an existing record of 31 hours, set by a Canadian in 2008, and she says she had to do it the hard way. “At this stage he has not broken the record by an hour,” she said. Pivott was raising money with her swingathon for a liberty wheelchair swing in Pukekohe.

A 91-year-old New Plymouth veteran made a special trip to Auckland’s Anzac Day service yesterday to tick off an item on his “bucket list” while he’s still well enough. Clive Jones, who served as an Air Force air frame mechanic from 1949 to 1966, grew up in Mt Roskill and remembers attending Anzac Day services at the Auckland War Memorial Museum as a child. “I’m not well, to be honest,” he said in his wheelchair outside the museum yesterday. “I’ve got a collapsed lung, I’ve got two artificial hips. It was just a thing I wanted to see, that’s all. “It was a bucket-list thing. I haven’t been very well. I’ve been in

hospital twice recently.” He remembers looking up a relative who was killed in World War One when he visited the museum after an Anzac Day service as an 11-year-old. He said the service had not changed much despite the use of big screens and other technology. “It’s probably a bigger crowd,” was all he would concede. Born in 1927, Jones was too young to serve in World War Two, but his two older brothers and three brothers-in-law all fought. “I tried for the navy when I was 16 at Otahuhu College. They wouldn’t take me,” he said. When he eventually joined the air force, he helped to service the Harvard aircraft that took part in a

fly-past while the crowd sang the national anthem at yesterday’s service. He was one of the military personnel who were ordered to load and unload ships on the Auckland wharves during the 1951 waterfront dispute, ferried in from the Chelsea sugar refinery wearing work clothes over their uniforms. After he left the air force he worked as a carpenter in Blenheim, Taranaki and Waiouru. Son Garry Jones, an Aucklander who brought his dad to the service yesterday, said it was well worth it. “We normally do it at St Heliers but that was cancelled so we came here, and particularly with Prince William being here that adds a little bit more to it,” he said.

The frontman of Kiwi band dDub, Derek Browne, has died after a short battle with cancer. An obituary published in the New Zealand Herald said Browne passed away on April 23, leaving behind wife Veronica Herber. “Dearly loved husband and soulmate of Veronica and dearly loved stepdad and mate of Sevy and Kris,” the obituary said. “Much loved and cherished beautiful son of Judy and the late Michael.”

Browne was first diagnosed with prostate cancer in November last year after he suddenly became ill with lower back pain and fatigue. Just months prior he had been fit and able to climb trees in his work as an arborist. Browne founded dDub and for 15 years the band toured the country, playing more than 56 gigs in a single year alone. He was the lead singer and guitarist of the band which released one tour EP, two albums and several singles. Browne is to be farewelled today at a service in Piha Domain.

Before the undertakers could move in, Anusha Kumari wrested herself away from her sisters and flung herself on the three coffins, wailing. In an instant, she was left childless and a widow when suicide bombers attacked churches and luxury hotels in and near Sri Lanka’s capital of Colombo. The toll was highest at St Sebastian’s Church in Negombo. Of the more than 350 people killed by the suicide bombings that the government blamed on Muslim extremists, about a third of them died at the church in the seaside fishing town while attending Easter Mass. And perhaps no-one lost more relatives than 43-year-old Kumari, whose daughter, son, husband, sister-in-law and two nieces were killed. They were buried three days later near

the church on vacant land that has quickly become a cemetery for the victims. Kumari, who was injured from the blast, left the hospital to bury her family. Afterward, she reclined in a cane chair at her home, hooked up to an IV dangling from an open window. Gauze bandages covered the bridge of her nose and her right eye. There was still shrapnel in her face. A photo of her children was on the wall, while on the shelf were small statues of Jesus, Mary and St Sebastian, an early Christian martyr riddled with wounds from Roman arrows. She could see her son’s drum kit on the upstairs landing, a gift from his father after doing well on exams and a school portrait of her daughter. All day, relatives, neighbours and nuns wandered in and out of the large house, offering food, consolation and prayer. “You won’t believe it, but I had the perfect family,” Kumari said. “In 24 years of

marriage, my husband and I never argued. All four of us slept in the same room. Now I have lost everything.” Tears mixed with blood from her bandaged right eye. “All these people, they have their own families. They’ll go home and I’ll be alone,” she said. During the funeral at the makeshift cemetery near St Sebastian’s, where mourners had to pass through security checks, a military drone buzzed overhead as the Rev. Niroshan Perera led prayers for the dead. Perera, who grew up with Kumari’s husband, Dulip Appuhami, and his siblings, recalled going as a boy with his friends and family to the church’s well, where the faithful believed the water could cure them of diseases. When the funeral ended, Perera encouraged everyone to go home quickly, fearing another attack.

Five-year-old found buried in shallow grave Authorities searching for a missing fiveyear-old Illinois boy who had lived in deplorable conditions dug up his body yesterday and charged his parents with murder, sadly declaring that the youngster would “no longer have to suffer”. The body, believed to be that of Andrew “AJ” Freund, was covered in plastic and buried in a shallow grave in a rural area of Woodstock in McHenry County, Crystal Lake police chief James Black said. Black said investigators went to the site after they interviewed the boy’s parents overnight and presented them with cellphone evidence. Woodstock is about 80km north-west of Chicago and a few miles from the family’s home in Crystal Lake. “This is not the outcome that we want to talk about ... but it is the unfortunate result,” said Jeffrey Sallet, who runs the FBI in northern Illinois. The parents, Andrew Freund Sr and JoAnn Cunningham, each face charges of

The couple reported AJ missing last Thursday, telling officers they had last seen him at bedtime the previous night. Freund told a dispatcher that they’d checked “closets, the basement, the garage, everywhere”, but investigators quickly knocked down the possibility of a kidnapping.

Speaking to reporters, Black had a message for AJ’s relatives: “It is my hope that you may have some solace in knowing that AJ is no longer suffering and his killers have been brought to justice.” Crystal Lake police had visited the house over the years, according to records released by the department. One report described the home as littered with dog faeces and urine, including a child’s bedroom where the “smell of faeces was overwhelming”. Another report said the house was “cluttered, dirty and in disrepair”, and sometimes without electricity. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, known as DCFS, had contact with the family since AJ was born with opiates in his body in 2013. The Northwest Herald said he was in foster care for two years before being returned to his parents. A younger brother was removed from the home last week. Black said the cause of AJ’s death remains under investigation.

Racist murderer executed AP An avowed racist who orchestrated one of the most gruesome hate crimes in US history was executed yesterday in Texas for the dragging death of a black man. John William King, who was white, received lethal injection for the slaying nearly 21 years ago of James Byrd Jr, who was chained to the back of a truck and dragged for nearly 5km along a secluded road in the piney woods outside Jasper, Texas. The 49-year-old Byrd was alive for at least 3km before his body was ripped to pieces in the early morning hours of June 7, 1998. Prosecutors said Byrd was targeted because he was black. King was openly racist and had offensive tattoos on his body, including one of a black man with a noose around his neck hanging from a tree, according to authorities. King, 44, was put to death at the state penitentiary in Huntsville, Texas. He was the fourth inmate executed this year in the US and the third in Texas, the nation’s busiest capital punishment state. King kept his eyes closed as witnesses arrived in the death chamber and never turned his head toward relatives of his victim. Asked by warden Bill Lewis if he had a final statement, King replied: “No.” Within seconds, the lethal dose of the sedative pentobarbital began taking effect. He took a few barely audible breaths and had no other movement. He was pronounced dead 12 minutes after the injection. In a statement released after his execution, King said: “Capital punishment: them without the capital get the punishment.” Byrd’s sister, Clara Taylor, who watched King die, said he “showed no remorse then and showed no remorse tonight”. “The execution for his crime was just punishment,” she said. “I felt nothing – no sense of relief, no sense of happy this is over with.” As witnesses emerged from the prison, about two dozen people standing down the street began to cheer. The killing of Byrd was a hate crime that put a national spotlight on Jasper, a town of about 7600 residents near the Texas-Louisiana border that was branded with a racist stigma it has tried to shake off ever since. King’s appellate lawyers had tried to stop his execution, arguing King’s constitutional rights were violated because his trial attorneys didn’t present his claims of innocence and conceded his guilt. The US Supreme Court rejected King’s last-minute appeal.

The difficult thing about buying a home is knowing what you don’t know. If you’re a first-home buyer, or it’s been a long time since you were last in the property market, it can be tricky to know what to look out for. “Most things seem hard when you do them for the first time and navigating the property market is no different,” says Kevin Lampen-Smith, chief executive of the Real Estate Authority (REA). “We encourage everyone to build a support team when they’re preparing to buy a property so they’re ready when they find a place they like. Family and friends can be a good source of information and support, but you need some professionals on your side too.” Lampen-Smith says that means

finding a lawyer or conveyancer before you start looking at properties (and getting their advice before you sign anything). The REA also recommends buyers hire a qualified property inspector to check a place out before making an offer. “Every property you’ll see will come

with a different set of things to think about,” Lampen-Smith says. “To make that decision making a bit easier, the REA has developed Property Checker, a new, interactive online tool on settled.govt.nz.” Like the name suggests, the tool helps buyers identify potential problems with a property. “It’s easy to use – all you need to do is answer a set of questions about a property that you’re interested in,” Lampen-Smith says. “If you’ve gone to an open home and thought, ‘this could be the place for us’, you can go through the questions to find out what research you should be doing.” For example, if you’re checking out a property built in the early 2000s

with monolithic cladding, Property Checker will flag up things you need to ask about, such as the home’s weathertightness and structural integrity. It will also point out possible property hazards, such as earthquakes, flooding, coastal erosion or volcanic eruption, and explain the impact of different types of ownership. “None of this is designed to put you off the property, but to highlight things you might not have thought about,” Lampen-Smith says. “Think of Property Checker as a critical friend that honestly gives you their objective opinion. It won’t have all the information you need, but it’s a great place to start.”

Sorento - style and performance K ia has come a long way. Ever since Peter Schreyer, former Audi designer, became head designer at Kia Motors, the range’s looks have progressed in leaps and bounds. With a former BMW designer recently joining the team as head of styling, the future is looking very bright for Kia. Locally, Kia has gone from being at the lower end of the shortlist, to best-selling SUV two years running. The new design direction has played a significant part, but a nod has to be made to the fact that Kia has achieved top spot – ahead of all other car brands – for dependability in overseas test. And let’s not forget that Kia have a leading warranty programme with five years’ cover and Roadside Assist. New Zealand’s taste for SUVs has also helped, with the range including the highly popular Kia Sportage and the impressive Kia Sorento, ticking the boxes for great contenders in both the mid-size and large seven-seater SUV segments. This brings us nicely to the Kia Sorento. As a seven-seater, it’s up against popular brands like Toyota, Volkswagen, Mazda and Ford. Those shopping in this segment would very much benefit from giving the Kia a go. The spec sheet shows the Kia Sorento range to be impressively equipped, but it’s the finer details that really make a difference. Details that you only appreciate once you live with the

vehicle, rather than experience it on a test drive. Take the pull-up rear window blinds. Anyone with young children will know that a rear sunshade is essential for longer car journeys. The Sorento’s blinds offer nice advantages over aftermarket shades that you wouldn’t realise until you’ve spent time in the car with kids. They entirely cover the win-

dow, so there’s no need at all to keep adjusting. The edges of the blinds cannot be reached by little children who might interfere with them, they disappear into the door when not in use so can’t be stood on when left on the floor, and – perhaps the biggest benefit of all – you can now lower the window with the blinds still in place, giving the back seats both shade and fresh air.

Window blinds aside, the Sorento has an impressively premium feel that would rival more ‘luxury’ brands. Even the base model boasts some impressive gear and stats. Fuel economy starts from just 6.5L/100km with CO2 at 164g/ km, with the 2.2L diesel providing 147kW of power and 441Nm torque through its all-wheel drive and 8-speed automatic transmission.

It boasts a cavernous 1662 litres of space (seats down), and features a 7” touchscreen with Apply CarPlay/Android Auto smart phone connectivity. ack in March 2013 Trevor and Kathryn Shaw shared their interest in motoring with us. In that article we recounted how, when Trevor was growing up in England, he decided he liked American cars. After emigrating with his parents and sister to New Zealand in 1960, Trevor and his father established a painting business. In the early days of the business American cars – a 1928 National Chevrolet and a 1937 Chevrolet Master Deluxe – served as work vehicles. As time went on other business vehicles were purchased, but Trevor never forgot how much he liked those Chevrolets and in retirement he and Kathryn were able to purchase another Chevrolet Deluxe. They joined the Vintage Car Club and Trevor, always keen to help, became actively involved in various ways, including two terms as chairman. Vintage Car Club members, many others in the community and us here at Guardian Motoring were saddened when we heard of Trevor’s recent passing. He was a kind, cheerful gentleman who had a wonderful knack of making others feel special. We offer Kathryn and her family our condolences. Wheels Week Annually at this time of year thoughts turn to the uniquely Ashburton extravaganza which is about to happen – Wheels Week Plus. This wonderful celebration of the wheel takes place between May 4 and 19. Corn, bacon and courgette rice slice 5 eggs 1/2 C cooked long grain rice 2 courgettes, grated 420g can corn kernels, rinsed and drained 4 rashers bacon, rind removed, diced 1/2 C grated tasty cheese Salsa: 1 red onion, diced 2 tomatoes, diced 1T olive oil Salt, to season Pepper, to season ■■ Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced). Lightly grease and line a 20cm square pan with baking paper. ■■ In a large bowl, whisk eggs and rice together. Squeeze excess moisture from the courgettes. Add courgettes, corn, bacon and half of the cheese to the egg mixture. Mix well. Season to taste.

■■ Pour mixture into prepared pan. Sprinkle remaining cheese over the top. Bake for 25-30 minutes, until just set. Leave to cool in pan for 10 minutes. Remove and cut into 8 slices. ■■ Meanwhile, to make salsa, com-

Moving on and leaving the hate behind I

t was an act of extraordinary leadership when the commander of the Turkish Ottoman Army wrote about the Anzacs who lost their lives on his shores at Gallipoli in World War One. Instead of demonising our brave soldiers as foreigners who arrived to kill and reap mayhem, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk called them heroes. “Those heroes who shed their blood and lost their lives; you are now lying in the soil of a friendly country,” he wrote in 1934, words which are today inscribed at the Ari Burnu Memorial in Gallipoli. “Therefore rest in peace,” he

continued. “You, the mothers who sent their sons away from faraway countries, wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. “After having lost their lives on this land, they have become our sons as well.” These words could only have

brought comfort to New Zealanders and Australians who lost their sons, brothers and fathers in such a pointless conflict. Ataturk went on to lead modern-day Turkey, and his words have been recalled at many an Anzac Day service since, including in Ashburton yesterday by Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon, and also in Gallipoli itself at the dawn service attended by thousands. What marks the commander’s words as extraordinary, is that at a time when it would have been easy to degenerate into xenophobia and hatred of an old war enemy, he found it in his heart

to reach out, and be kind and gracious. We can learn a lot from this today, particularly in the current climate of terrorist attacks claiming the lives of hundreds, if not thousands, throughout the world each year. Terror seems to be the language of war of today, as various groups and individuals act on allegiances they have with any one group, and direct their hate towards those they see as the enemy. In Ashburton yesterday, armed police were present at services, providing a reminder of the climate we live in.

It is crazy to think, and almost beyond comprehension, that just six weeks ago Ashburton was a secondary target for a terrorist who carried out the Christchurch attacks. Thankfully, we as New Zealanders can begin to move on and leave the hate behind. However, key to this has been our embracing of the values we all share as Kiwis, those of love and acceptance for our fellow countrymen and women, no matter their race or religion. These values are, after all, what our Anzacs fought for over previous generations and continue to fight for today.

Laura Van Ryn, two students at Indiana’s Taylor University, were involved in a van-truck collision that killed five people; in a tragic mix-up that took five weeks to resolve, a seriously injured and comatose Cerak was mistakenly identified as Van Ryn, who had actually died in the crash and was buried by Cerak’s family. acinda Ardern shrugs her stylish shoulders, grimaces attractively into the camera and makes a gesture of deep-seated helplessness, “That’s MMP for you”, she sighs. Indeed it is, and at its threadbare worst. Her Labour Party, having paid for and accepted the report on the issue, as produced by the endlessly-willing, and stratospherically expensive, Sir Michael Cullen, is obliged, despite Sir Michael’s weasel words, to agree there can be no Capital Gains Tax (CGT) on her watch. Although a firm believer in the efficacy and fairness of a CGT, and having campaigned on the issue, the exigencies of MMP, mean Labour is constantly held to ransom by Winston and his raggle-taggle collection of List-Seated, parliamentary stooges. Winston and those six stooges say “No” to a CGT so that’s an end to it, at least while Jacinda remains on the Bridge of S.S. Labour. Winston knows – or thinks he does – that the nation at large is strongly against a Capital Gains Tax, so to be seen and heard canvassing for one would be, as he sees it, political suicide. Such are his feelings of parliamentary immortality, he simply cannot allow that to happen, as he proposes to be an integral part of any government that may take office between now and 2030, when he will be a mere ninety-two years old and only just getting into his stride. In his opinion, the country cannot do without him; he must, therefore, always be ready to be the vital cog in the wheel of government, at least until the Grim Reaper finally loses patience and intervenes, once and for all. On the other hand, our world-feted Prime Minister – her likeness projected onto every significant building on the planet – was wedded to the idea of a CGT. That forces outside her control are attempting to

dissuade her from pursuing such a tax is a matter of great sadness to her. She may well have thought of it as her thermo-nuclear moment in her crusade to end inequality, hunger and homelessness. The feeling at large, however, seems to be that campaigning for a Capital Gains Tax is similar to purchasing a ticket to political oblivion, something about which her less than idolised colleagues – whose faces never appear on buildings, except possibly, in the form of vulgar graffiti – are less than enthusiastic. The revolving opinions on this issue of two of the political mega luminaries of our time, Knights of the Realm, Michael Cullen and Roger Douglas, are relevant here. Sir Michael’s current view of a CGT is that it is, “extremely socially unacceptable and economically unnecessary (sic)”. Originally, it must be said, he was greatly in favour of such a tax. Similarly, Sir Roger, once a strong campaigner for the proposed legislation, these days describes it as “a joke”. “Government should”, he recently pronounced, “re-think the way it spends money, instead

of a Capital Gains Tax. I think, broadly, it’s a joke. Get rid of feefree university places, the Shane Jones Circus and his Provincial Growth Fund,” says the founder of Rogernomics, an opinion with which many voters would warmly agree. One can’t help being a little surprised, though, that Jacinda should apparently have given up on a pivotal aspect of her philosophy without much of a struggle. “The coalition has not been able to reach a consensus,” the PM laments. “I still believe in a CGT; the Labour Party has now campaigned for one over three elections but still lacks a mandate with which to introduce it.” From where I sit, I would have thought Ardern’s international manna – not to mention the adulation in which she is held in Aotearoa, New Zealand – would be sufficient for her to steam-roll the doubters, press on with her mission and bring off a Capital Gains Tax victory where several of her predecessors have failed. That the CGT is anathema to the business and financial worlds, is a nightmare to administer and the costs not with the candle, could, one has to think,

be overcome simply by our PM’s current world-wide popularity and force of personality. What Jacinda says, so often nowadays, goes. So why not a Capital Gains Tax? Even a loss would surely be but a minor glitch in her perpetual popularity, popularity that should be strong enough to see her back on the Treasury benches next year. Her iron-clad celebrity status would shield her against the occasional sling or arrow, a CGT might eventuate after all, and people discover, to their pleasant surprise, it is not quite the man-eating ogre of antiquity as, for so long, advertised. Jacinda might then be seen surveying her adoring colleagues with a winsome grin of satisfaction, flickering across her friendly features! “I told you so, Sir Michael”, it seems to say. Racing reporter Matt Markham takes a look at the racing week that was and has a look at the weekend ahead.

hile our presence on the harness racing stage may not be as great as it once was, Mid Canterbury can still pull a pretty hefty punch and stand up tall just like we did at Timaru on Wednesday. There were Mid Canterbury names scattered throughout the winners list, including some great success for a few of the lesser known lights of the industry from within our district. Wendy Stevenson started the ball rolling when her ultra-consistent mare, Gotta Future delivered a standout performance to knock off another local pacer, Iknow and John Hay. The Gotta Go Cullen mare has been in grand form recently and was very deserving of her victory after a smart drive by John Dunn. Hay didn’t have to wait too long, he was in the winners’ circle in the very next race when Nearis Green, wearing the colours of his father Cyril, came from the trail to win after showing exceptionally good stand start manners to lead and trail. It too was a Mid Canterbury quinella with the Wendy Nordqvist owned Spot On finishing second. A couple of good Rakaia lads combined a little later on when Girls Let Loose made it two wins in a row. After winning at Forbury last week in the hands of Sarah O’Reilly, the Stuart Sutherland trained trotter was driven by Gerard O’Reilly. Ricky May made sure he wasn’t left out when he won on Donegal Gilbert and then Brent White unleashed a promising type in Cranbourne to win a couple of races later. May then grabbed another – and a double for Brendon Hill when Fancy won the penultimate race of the day.

Riverton shows how it’s done There is a lot of conversation around at the moment about the future of some tracks in the South Island and just where they sit in the make-up of the racing industry. Some have been set for closure following the release of the Messara report and despite plenty of public outcry, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of wiggle room for some clubs to keep their tracks in action. An unfortunate situation we find ourselves in is that those in the flash suits sitting in Wellington and Auckland making all the decisions are so far separated from the the actual racing world that they have no idea. Riverton’s annual Easter Saturday meet-

They had 4000 people on course and the turnover from punters was far higher than that which was wagered at a supposed big day of racing at Ellerslie in Auckland on the same day. Sure, the furnishings aren’t as flash and the grandstands might be a little more worn down than some of the big tracks, but meetings like Riverton, Reefton and Waikouaiti are the beating heart of the industry. They draw some of the biggest fields and make for a return to the former glory days of racing with decent crowds out and enjoying the spectacle. Don’t ruin that.

Where’s our race meeting? Harness racing fans who keep up with the play will have noticed that a meeting scheduled for the Ashburton Trotting Club this weekend is no longer in existence. The meeting was removed by Harness Racing New Zealand earlier in the season – and it would be safe to say it’s not been the most well-received decision made by the industry leaders judging by reaction

from trainers around the Canterbury region. With no meeting in the region from Wednesday’s Timaru meeting until Addington next week, it’s left a big gap for a lot of horses which has put a few noses out of joint. Admittedly, the fault doesn’t rest solely with HRNZ, they were forced by the Racing Board to delete the date due to a clash with the Blenheim galloping meeting due to the fact they couldn’t service both meetings with their control truck – incidentally, it was the same reason that Ashburton lost their Boxing Day date. It’s not a major meeting, but it’s still a blow for the industry in this part of the country. It certainly does seem as though the powers above aren’t that fond of Ashburton at the moment for some reason and their actions and decisions would certainly reflect that.

Racing this week As previously said, there’s not much to get excited about locally this weekend which is a real shame, but there’s still a bit worth sinking the teeth into. Harness fans have the excitement of

Group One racing tonight from Alexandra Park and then Diamonds Day at Invercargill tomorrow with some cracking fields in action. On the thoroughbred side of the fence, the two-day meeting at Waterlea Racecorse in Blenheim is always interesting racing. On speed runners are often the best bets of the day up there and looking through the fields there is no shortage of them.

What are we backing? Feelin The Love snuck into third at the nice place price of $3.60 last Saturday and Far From True was late scratched at Motukarara on Monday so we’ll call that a winning weekend. Gallops: I can’t believe I’m doing it, I said I wouldn’t again – but one of my own goes around today at Blenheim and it’s just the sort of track she’ll love. Attimo is in the sixth of the day with Lisa Allpress in the saddle. Look out if she finds the rail early. Trots: He might give you $3 for the win, but Morningstar Gold should prove very hard to beat in the last race of the day tomorrow from Invercargill on Diamonds Day.

Steel surge downs Mystics NZME Finding their groove late, the Southern Steel powered home to clinch a 66-60 win over the much-improved Northern Mystics to close out Round Nine in Dunedin last night. Well in the contest heading down the home straight, the Mystics could not contain the defending champions who showed their pedigree when it mattered most, lifting the intensity levels and improving their accuracy to finish in dominant fashion. Unlucky to miss out on a bonus point, the Mystics started full of promise, changes in the final quarter taking time to settle as the Steel overcame a slow start, capitalising on opportunities while the visitor’s chances dried up. There were no surprises in the Steel line-up with goal shoot Lenize Potgieter reclaiming the starting spot. Captain Phoenix Karaka continued to be ruled out of action with concussion, but the Mystics welcomed back wing attack Elisapeta Toeava from injury while retaining the well-performed Grace Kukutai at wing defence. Cleary denies blow-up led to Gould exit AAP Penrith coach Ivan Cleary has embraced the pressure of leading the NRL club following the shock exit of Panthers supremo Phil Gould. “I understand that I’m the leader of the club here and I have to – the results will always fall on my shoulders,” Cleary said yesterday. “By nature I believe in collaboration and one thing I love about rugby league has been the team environment. But I know the buck will stop with me.”

Cleary was speaking a day after the club agreed to make Gould’s position as general manager of football redundant, after he approached them about leaving. His exit comes five months after Cleary was brought back to the club as coach despite Gould making overtures to lure Wayne Bennett. Cleary was at pains to deny suggestions of a power struggle between the pair, emanating from Gould’s decision to sack him in 2015. While it was Gould who pushed previous coach Anthony Griffin

out last August, chairman Dave O’Neill came over the top by bringing Cleary back on a mammoth five-year deal. “There’s no falling out. Never has been,” insisted Cleary. I’ve known Gus (Gould) for almost 25 years, he’s been a huge part in my life and my career as a player and a coach.” Cleary was also forced to deny that a disagreement over a recent recruitment decision was the catalyst for Gould’s exit. “There was no blow-ups. I’ve never had a blow-up with Gus in

my life actually,” Cleary said. “I know it seems like a nice narrative but Gus has always said that this role he’s in will come to an end at some point. He was always the one going to know that. “For him to make that decision, I certainly respect that decision and feel indebted that it’s now our job as a staff and me leading that staff, to take it from here.” Cleary was a little surprised when Gould opted to leave with three-and-a-half years left of a five-year deal to continue a tenure that began in 2012.

Freak accident The Black Sticks Women were dealt a cruel blow ahead of their must-win FIH Pro League match against Australia yesterday when Rose Keddell suffered a freak injury. The seasoned defender needed stitches to her head after copping a knock while training this week, Black Sticks interim coach Sean Dancer confirmed. The 25-year-old was out running when a rubbish bin dropped from the truck after it had been emptied, striking the 165-cap star. Calls for Adams’ trade NZME Calls for a Steven Adams’ trade have grown louder in the wake of the Oklahoma City Thunder’s Western Conference play-offs loss. Leading by 15 points with six minutes to play, the Thunder looked assured of keeping their season alive, but a furious Portland Trail Blazers comeback was capped off by a miraculous deep three-pointer from Damian Lillard, giving Portland a 118-115 victory and a 4-1 series victory. Adams had 10 points, four rebounds, two assists and three blocks, but missed most of the final quarter due to foul trouble

and match-up problems. Some fans have since taken to Twitter demanding an Adams trade, questioning the Kiwi’s performance this season. Adams was first tipped to be traded when an American sports journalist slammed the Kiwi big man’s season as ‘disappointing’. “The guy they are going to have to trade is Adams who has been really, really disappointing … not only in this series but down the stretch too,” Simmons said. He still believed Adams would be an attractive buy for another franchise, however, with the Kiwi’s leadership and team-first attitude often hailed as one of the best in the NBA.

Ashburton’s JION Karate Dojo has taken on a bit of a golden glow after a busy couple of weeks for some of its top young karate exponents. Taylah Burrowes and Kyle Cabangun both headed to Australia before Easter for the Australian Karate Championships and the Australian Open Championships, where both performed with distinction. Burrowes returned home from Sydney with gold from the school championships and bronze from the Australian Open, while Cabangun also won a gold in his weight division. On their return to New Zealand they lined up for the New

Zealand Open, which ran on Good Friday and was attended by three JION members – Burrowes, Cabangun and Leanne Walsh. There, Burrowes won gold in her age and weight division kumite, and bronze in her age division kata. She also joined in the team kumite with two girls from Auckland and together they won team gold and from there she attended a two-day national training camp. On the Saturday it was the turn of the younger development and intermediate level competitors who also brought home a haul of medals for JION. Brooke Edmond took bronze in the six to seven-year-old development kata and the devel-

opment kumite, while Madison Edmond won gold in the eight to nine-year-old development kumite 30kg-plus category. In the eight and nine-yearold development section, Carina Lupse took silver in the development kumite 30kg-plus, while in the 10 to 11-year-old intermediate kata Isabel Wang took bronze. She also took bronze in the same age intermediate kumite. Meanwhile, Rakaia’s Tayla Davidson was also in action at the New Zealand open and she too came home with an impressive medal haul. She won gold in kumite, silver in kata, gold in team kata and bronze in team kumite, and also attended the two-day national camp.

The World Cup loss that changed McCaw’s life NZME Former All Blacks captain Richie McCaw has opened up on how the darkest day in his rugby career became his greatest life lesson. Speaking on Radio Hauraki’s A Few Good Men podcast, McCaw recalled how tough the All Black’s 2007 World Cup quarterfinal loss to France was for him at the time. But now, looking back on it as a turning point, McCaw credited that dark day as one of the reasons he went on to lead the All Blacks to redemption and win the 2011 and 2015 World Cups. “People ask me what is the worst thing that happened to you in rugby? For a while, I’d say the 2007 World Cup quarter-final but probably now I’d say it was one of the best things that happened to me,” McCaw said. “I wouldn’t have put the time and effort and work into what happened for the [next] eight years … I don’t think the All Blacks would have been successful for the [following] eight years had we not gone through that.

“Yes, it was tough at the time but the learnings we got out of it and where it took us, the path it took us, wouldn’t have happened if we hadn’t gone through that. “It showed you how tough it is to actually win a World Cup. It put that right in perspective. You never took anything for granted after that.” Since hanging up his boots, McCaw has refocused his competitiveness to the world of adventure racing, adding that the valuable lesson he learned in the 2007 event had motivated him to continue challenging himself. “I always said, ‘what am I going to miss from not playing rugby?’ It’s the challenge but also the learning. I think if you haven’t got something you are trying to get to or be better at, then you are just going to plateau and you’re just going to turn up and it’s going to be the same old. “Whereas if you’ve got something you really want to figure out so that you’re not on a plateau, then you are going to have a purpose to get out of bed each day.”

Strong showing at nationals Ashburton waterskiers have again shown they are some of the best in New Zealand with a stand-out run of performances at the national championships in the Oraeki Basin over the long weekend. After some outstanding success both locally and on the international stage over the past couple of months, the Ashburton contingent carried their form through to the nationals and made the most of some spectacular weather for waterskiing picking up some huge scores along the way and also making full use of the new Nautique boat and a new jump ramp which had been imported from America in the lead-up to the championships. Again, it was the prowess of the Donaldson twins, Hugh and George, which led the charge for the Ashburton group, but rising star Emily Milner made sure her name was in lights with some outstanding results as well. Hugh was in particularly good form with solid results throughout the course of the championships. He walked away with the prestigious Wade Trophy for the highest tricks score of any skier under 21 in any event at championships. That title sat alongside his effort to finish second in the New Zealand open men’s competition. Hugh claimed gold in the under-21 tricks, silver in the jump and bronze in the slalom as well

as picking up another bronze medal in the open men’s competitions with 50-metre jump. Brother George wasn’t left out. He claimed silver in the open men’s slalom – producing some outstanding runs and skiing on to the short 12-metre line in all three rounds. He set the score to beat in the open men’s event, but was eventually collared, finishing fourth overall in the open men’s competition and second overall to Hugh in the under-21 category with a gold in slalom and silver in tricks. Milner, fresh off a grand weekend at the Canterbury championships, won bronze overall in New Zealand girls, with a silver in tricks, and bronzes in slalom and jump, including a 33m personal best. She also claimed the Silver Star for women award, with her strong scores overall throughout the season over three different sites. The young up-and-comer was also selected for the first time to ski in the New Zealand open women’s division. Other results from the championship for local skiers saw Lana Leckenby a close fourth in open women’s slalom and she picked up bronze in both the slalom and tricks. Courtney Donaldson won silver in both the women’s jump and overall and came fourth in slalom and tricks. Neil Donaldson was a close silver in SM3 tricks.

Kelly Slater expects the world’s best surfers to be “dodging bullets” today when a predicted huge swell hits Australia’s Bells Beach for the concluding stages of the Rip Curl Pro. The 11-time world champion was the first man through to the round of 16 after ousting Australian world title hope Julian Wilson in a tactical encounter yesterday. Wilson was frustrated after passing up priority on what turned out to be the best wave of a heat which the the 47-year-old Slater won 11.84 points to 7.20. As soon as he got out of the water, Slater was looking ahead to what is being described as a “50-year storm”, with the prospect of a 15-foot (five-metre) swell today and tomorrow. “It’s going to be big; it could be a 20-year swell from Point Break,” Slater said. “It’s always when you put that expectation that it doesn’t happen. “I think it’s going to be too big for Bells tomorrow and we’ll be trying to catch the inside waves.” Slater said he would have to search around for a bigger board to tackle whatever Bells offered up.

“Tomorrow’s round is going to be dodging bullets,” he said. “I don’t know that it’s going to be favouring anybody. “I think it’s just going to be choosing the right waves and positioning yourself. “Surf wise, I don’t think anyone looks like a giant favourite; maybe a John John (Florence) or something like that. “I’m just expecting it to be some big mushy walls out wide and we’re going to be trying to sneak in on some six-to-eight footers. “But it could be as big as ‘81. Who knows?” It was a second successive disappointing result for world title contender Wilson, who bowed out at the same stage at the season-opening event on the Gold Coast earlier this month. “I was definitely thinking for (Wilson), for his confidence and his year now, the pressure’s on because he’s had two bad results and I was going to have two bad results,” Slater said. “So, if there was any talk of me being back in the world title hunt it wasn’t going to happen if I lost that heat.” Slater’s next opponent will be Peterson Crisanto, who won an all-Brazilian encounter against Michael Rodrigues.

DEATHS POPE, Michael Bernard (Mick) (QSM) – On April 24, 2019 passed away peacefully at Rosebank Resthome, Ashburton. Aged 89 years. Husband of Helen and father of Mark, and Brent. Loved brother and brotherin-law of Peggy and Harold Maher, Bernie, and the late Gabrielle. Loved brother-inlaw of Lynn and Gerard Smith and Denis and Denise Nyhan. The basketball boom at Ashburton College has continued and the junior A side are preparing to step on to new ground. The side are preparing to make their debut in the Canterbury under-17 competition and it is something that has coach Mark Douglas excited. “It is the first time ever the junior boys have been in the Canterbury competition,” he said.

PHOTO JAIME PITT-MACKAY 220419-JPM-0001 “It is a good chance to stretch them out and challenge them. “We are just giving them a chance to be exposed to the next level, this will be another step up.” Douglas said he has been impressed with the team’s commitment to the challenge ahead of them, with many taking on extra training on top of their two scheduled sessions a week.

“They are training most days,” he said. “They are all pretty thirsty, but we do like to mix it up so we have our two scheduled trainings and we like to do something different so we have done a yoga session, a spin class and kick boxing.” The group will also be receiving a training session from a Basketball New Zealand high perfor-

mance coach. “It is cool that they are going to have access to a high level coach like that,” he said. While Douglas is excited for their debut in the competition this weekend, he is not expecting there to be any easy games. “I think we will win some games and we will definitely lose some, but there is going to be no expectation on the players,” he said.

“I was up in Christchurch the other week for a coaching course and they used the Canterbury under-17 side as examples of who the players are we will be playing against and there are some incredible talents there.” Ashburton College has nine basketball teams playing in competitions around Canterbury, the highest number they have had.
