With a slew of tenders now closed and under assessment, the progress of Ashburton’s new civic administration building and library is on track for work to start in October next year. Tenders for quantity surveying and a range of engineering work

including mechanical, hydraulic, fire protection and electrical work have been evaluated and tenders for structural, general and geotechnical engineering work are still to be evaluated by the Ashburton District Council’s Project Control Group (PCG). Those tenders will go to the October 30 Ashburton District Coun-

cil meeting for sign off. There were a good number of tenders received across all work and the quality of those tenders was high, business support manager Paul Brake said. Currently the architects, Athfields Ltd, were still refining building concept drawings and these would come to a council work-

shop in December, and were likely to be signed off in late December. This is in line with a timeline that set a year end completion of this stage of the project, he said. The council administration building and library site includes land currently occupied by the Methodist Church Hall. When the council bought the hall and

land, the original agreement with the Methodist Church was that no work would take place on the new build until the church had completed design work to strengthen its historic Baring Square church.

Firefighters are warning Mid Canterbury locals to be extra vigilant as the region starts to dry up after a run of incredibly warm weather. It’s been a hectic time for local fire units with a spike in attendances coinciding with the arrival of some really warm weather over the past few weeks. The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade alone has had close to 30 call-outs in the past two weeks, continuing its run as one of the busiest volunteer stations in the country. But as the weather continues to warm up, Rural Fire Officer Don Geddes is sure that locals can help keep the number of call-outs down by simply supervising any fires that might be lit. “It’s all the usual stuff we remind everyone of from year to year really,” he said. “We are starting to see a rise in call-outs to vegetation type fires which sits alongside the change to some pretty warm weather. “The Ashburton volunteer guys have been really busy lately and any call-out that can be prevented is actually a really good result for the community.” Geddes said the onus was on the person in control of the fire to make sure that they were on hand at all times and ready to act should things look like getting out of control. But he also said the biggest issue was a lack of respect for the power of ashes and embers which could remain warm for weeks before reigniting during wind. “That’s where a lot of people get caught out, they’ll watch something burn right down but then not properly extinguish it. “It’s a really common mistake, but one we’re trying to make sure

The Ashburton District Council will keep a protective eye on historic Pioneer Hall when it builds its new admin and civic building next door, says Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel. Favel made the pledge when she unveiled an historic plaque on the hall on Monday. It is now home to Historic Places Mid Canterbury. The bright blue plaque had earlier been fixed high on the Havelock Street frontage of the hall, which sits next to the former art gallery and museum building – which will need to make way for the new council build. Favel said the council was trying to honour the district’s history and had projects on the go at Wakanui Beach and the Chinese village on Allens Road. Pioneer Hall was already a heritage-listed building, she said. “We will be doing everything we can to make sure we honour what we can, including saving this building.” Historic Places Mid Canterbury has called the hall home since 2007 but the building started its life as a base for the Ashburton Hospital Board in 1916. It has been a women’s rest rooms, a taxi office and the headquarters for Birthright. The information plaque is a welcome sign. The historic places group embarked last year on a campaign to highlight Ashburton’s buildings of importance with informative plaques, coloured blue. The first was erected on the 100-year-old overhead railbridge in November and Pioneer Hall became the second site this week. Another six or seven buildings are in the pipeline, with the group talking with building owners around town.

From P1 This agreement, however, has been amended, council assets manager Colin Windleborn said, to allow the council to move ahead with its project. “Originally we were waiting for them to have their design work done for their building before the handover of the hall, but now it doesn’t matter where the church is at with its plans we just have to give them a specified period of notice and we can then take occupancy of the hall,” Windleborn said. And that meant the council was now able to move ahead on its own time frame without any pressure on the church, he said. The council, however, cannot take over ownership of the hall or schedule its demolition before March 1. “We’ll be working with them (the congregation) to find them somewhere else to meet.” The church will be strengthened and new meeting rooms built once the hall is demolished. The council has carried out a survey of the church and buildings close to its Baring Square site to establish the state of these ahead of work on the civic project. It would be a critical step in the project in terms of understanding available space, when both the hall and the county council building were demolished and there was a clear site, Windleborn said. The county building will continue to be used as the council chamber until the Havelock Street Civil Defence building is completed in mid December. This will become the council’s meeting chamber until the new administration building opens in early 2021.

The unveiling took place before the historic places group’s annual meeting. Project leader Nigel Gilkison said the modest little hall provided a great base for the group and the plaque project had good support. “It is one of those projects people really get behind and it is really, really heartening to see that sort of kindness.”

Ireland said it was a shame some of that work had been undone by lack of maintenance. Other “defeats” around that time included the demolition of the Ashburton Railway Station and the former Ashburton Tech building. The loss of the railway station was a tragedy, he said. “If only we could have got some firm in there.”

Former historic places local chairman Peter Ireland said the group had to kit the hall out with chairs and tea-making facilities when it took it over in 2007. Before then, members had met in church halls so the permanent base was gratefully received. Back then members were involved in a project to restore several rural cemeteries that had become overgrown.

Building consent for MSA big ticket project By Sue NewmaN

A giant step has been taken in the Ashburton MSA’s rebuild project with the granting of a building consent. When the Burnett Street end of the complex is demolished and rebuilt, it will be the completion of a project that started about 16 years ago. Originally the entire complex was to be replaced and a car parking area built on the upper level. Only the central and Havelock end of the premises, however, have been rebuilt. When an engineer’s report indicated the Burnett Street end of the building needed significant strengthening after the Canterbury earthquakes, the club’s committee was faced with two choices – spend more than $1m on strengthening work, or a new build. It opted to rebuild. With the building consent in its hands, the club is on track to start work after September 1, 2019. The search for building contractors will begin shortly, with a start date for building after September 1, 2019. “Everything’s up to time according to our original plan,” club manager Simon McDonnell said.

Climber injured A climber was flown from the Ashburton Lakes with serious injuries on Monday. A travelling party of six activated their personal locator beacon on the eastern side of Mount Harper around 12.20pm on Monday after one member of the group was injured following a fall. A helicopter transported the injured climber to the Christchurch Hospital in a critical condition.

Auction cancelled

The MSA’s Burnett Street frontage is to undergo a major revamp. The Burnett Street section of the complex was built in 1941 and includes the upper level restaurant and lower level club offices, meeting rooms and snooker room. In the rebuild the restaurant will move to the ground floor. One facility that won’t survive

the rebuild will be the MSA library. Its popularity has been declining and the club would soon have been forced to make a decision on its future anyway, he said. The new section will have a larger ground floor but a slightly smaller upper level. The distinctive art deco frontage will not be

recreated in the rebuild. When demolition work starts, the club’s offices will move into the now vacant room near the Havelock Street entrance that until recently housed the TAB. The club restaurant will also be out of business, for at least 12 months.

Protection order breached couple’s children were at the Caltex service station in Ashburton. The children’s mother and her new partner drove past in the Saxelby family car, a Nissan Pathfinder, with another of the former couple’s children in the car. Saxelby denied noticing the pair drive past, but both the ex-partner and her boyfriend testified that he saw them and quickly got into his vehicle and followed them closely across the Ashburton River bridge. They said they pulled into the Z service station at Tinwald, knowing there would be a forecourt security camera there.

An auction night planned to rally the support of the Mid Canterbury community for Nikki Tyrell has had to be cancelled due to a lack of ticket sales. Organisers advised over the weekend that they had to unfortunately pull the pin on the event. Driving close behind his expartner on State Highway One resulted in a Mayfield man being found guilty of breach of a protection order. David Saxelby, 32, unsuccessfully fought the charge at a judge alone trial in the Ashburton District Court yesterday. The court heard Saxelby had been served a temporary protection order in January by his ex-partner and mother of their children. Pedestrian hit by car A pedestrian has been moderately injured after a collision with a car in central Christchurch. A police spokeswoman said they received a report at 11.20am that a person with moderate injuries was lying under a car on Victoria Street. The weather is changing at the wrong time this week as the district gears up for its annual Ashburton A&P Show. Sideshow and ride operators are enjoying setting up in fine conditions, with temperatures set to hit 26 degrees today after reaching into the early 20s for the last five days in a row. Tomorrow southerlies are forecast to move in with rain developing, and the maximum is just 16 degrees, followed by 15 degrees on Friday with overcast conditions, and 17 on Saturday with cloud breaking way to fine weather. Show events convenor Chris Watson said it was good news that rain was not forecast for the two show days of Friday and Saturday, and that Saturday was set to be fine. The cooler conditions compared to the start of the week were arriving on the tail-end of rain, which would have farmers happy their paddocks had received a dousing. “Everyone’s irrigating, so having a bit of rain will not hurt,” Watson said. Entries are up on last year, at 4772, no small feat considering about 140 less represented due to no cattle showing this year due to mycoplasma bovis.

Cameron at fight night Former Commonwealth cruiserweight champion Shane Cameron will be the special guest at The Dubliner’s Fight Night on December 8. Fight Night II will be held at the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall Methven, and will feature an evening of live boxing with all proceeds going to the Methven Rugby Football Club. Job seeker numbers rising By Sue NewmaN

Ashburton employers might be struggling to find the right staff for the job, but the latest unemployment statistics show job seeker numbers in the Ashburton District are on the rise. For the September quarter 433 people were registered with the Ministry of Social Development

as looking for work, the second highest number in the past six years. Job seeker numbers hit a low for the September quarter in 2014 at 312. The six year high for that period was in 2016, 430. Last year there were 413 registered job seekers at the end of September. Not every person registered as looking for work, however, is able

to step into a job immediately. OF those on the register only 259 were listed as job ready. The remainder were listed as having a range of health or disability conditions. More males, 230, than females, 193 were looking for work, with the majority, 263 listed as New Zealand European. Forty to 54 year olds made up

the bulk of job seekers, 138, followed by 25-39 year-olds. 116 and 18 – 24 year olds, 82. Almost half of those on job seeker support had been receiving a benefit for less than one year. Total number of people receiving benefits in the district was 1119. Of those 259 were receiving sole parent support and 428 a supported living payment.

Taranaki sting nets cash, drugs Police have arrested three people and seized cash, drugs and a luxury vehicle in a Taranaki organised crime operation. Two vehicles were stopped and searched in New Plymouth on Monday. A 42-year-old local man was arrested and charged with possession of methamphetamine for supply, and was due to appear in the New Plymouth District Court yesterday. A 45-year-old Waitara man and 32-year-old Opunake woman have also been charged with possession of methamphetamine. In one of the vehicles 11 grams of methamphetamine

was found, as well as an envelope containing what police described as a “large quantity of cash”. A commercial premises on State Highway 3 has also been cordoned off and searched as part of ongoing inquiries, police said. The arrests follow an investigation into the sale and supply of methamphetamine in the Taranaki area. “We want to reassure the community we followed up their concerns and will work tirelessly to hold those responsible for drug offending to account,” Detective Senior Sergeant Brent Matuku said.

Missing man’s partner dies in Rotorua Hospital It’s been eight days since Rotorua man Wi Keefe Kaa sat beside his dying partner’s bedside at Rotorua Hospital. He left the hospital and hasn’t been seen since. His partner of 30 years died yesterday morning and their daughter is appealing for help to find her father so they can grieve for her together.

Kaa, known by his middle name Keefe, had been visiting his partner, who had been in a critical condition in Rotorua Hospital. He was last seen by his family at her bedside on Saturday October 13. He left the intensive care unit upset about his partner’s suffering, telling family he

was getting food, but his family haven’t seen him since. Hospital staff confirmed he went back to the intensive care unit two days later on the night of Monday October 15 to visit her. Family members reported his disappearance to police on Saturday October 20.

Woman’s death unexplained Police have named the woman who died in Christchurch in what they deemed an unexplained death as American citizen Lauren Biddle. The 22-year-old, who was working in New Zealand, died early on Monday morning. “A post-mortem was completed today and preliminary results have been forwarded to the Coroner,” Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Cottam said yesterday. “As part of the post-mortem process, Police and the Coroner are waiting on toxicology results.” Police are still carrying out a scene examination at the address which they believe Biddle had been at – which is expected to be completed today. Emergency services were initially called to the incident by a friend who was performing CPR on Biddle at Cliffton Terrace. “We have been in contact with Lauren’s US-based family and have been working with the US Embassy to offer them the support they need,” Cottam said. “No further information is available at this stage. Trump awaits death reports President Donald Trump said he’s not satisfied with the explanations he’s heard about the death of Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi and is awaiting reports from US personnel returning from the region. Khashoggi, who lived in the United States and wrote critically about the Saudi royal family, died earlier this month at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul. Saudi Arabia said he was killed in a fist-fight, but Turkish officials said the 59-year-old Washington Post columnist was attacked and killed by a 15-man Saudi team. Asked if he believed Saudi Arabia’s explanation, Trump said, “I am not satisfied with what I’ve heard.” “We’re going to get to the bottom of it. We have people over in Saudi Arabia now. We have top intelligence people in Turkey. They’re coming back either tonight or tomorrow,” Trump told reporters on the South Lawn of the White House before leaving for a political rally in Texas. “We’re going to know a lot over the next two days about the Saudi situation,” said Trump. “It’s a very sad thing.” Trump spoke with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who is the son of Saudi King Salman.

Schumer pregnant US comedian Amy Schumer has announced she is pregnant with her first child – on a friend’s Instagram account. Monsanto verdict upheld, award cut to $78m A Northern California judge has upheld a jury’s verdict that found Monsanto’s weed killer caused a groundskeeper’s cancer, but she slashed the amount of money to be paid. In denying Monsanto’s request for a new trial, San Francisco Superior Court Judge Suzanne Bolanos cut the jury’s punitive damage award from $250 million to $39 million. The judge had earlier said she had strong doubts about the jury’s entire punitive damage award. Bolanos gave DeWayne

Johnson until December 7 to accept the reduced amount or demand a new trial. Johnson’s spokeswoman Diana McKinley said he and his lawyers are reviewing the decision and haven’t decided the next step. “Although we believe a reduction in punitive damages was unwarranted and we are weighing the options, we are pleased the court did not disturb the verdict,” she said. Monsanto spokesman Daniel Childs said that the com-

pany was pleased with the reduced reward but still planned to appeal the verdict. Childs said there’s no scientific proof linking Roundup to cancer. The jury awarded punitive damages after it found that the St. Louis-based agribusiness had purposely ignored warnings and evidence that its popular Roundup product causes cancer, including Johnson’s lymphoma. Houston Rockets guard Chris Paul and his Los Angeles Lakers counterpart Rajon Rondo weren’t the only ones to get ejected after Saturday’s on-court brawl: Red Hot Chili Peppers front man Anthony Kiedis was also booted from the Staples Center. The 55-year-old Los Angeles native was ejected after cursing at Paul and giving the NBA All-Star the middle finger as he was being escorted off the court in the wake of Saturday’s melee according to DailyMail. Paul and Rondo began fighting after the latter appeared to spit on the former.

Microplastics found in humans Microplastics have been found in humans for the first time leading to fears they could be causing a raft of health and fertility problems. Although previous studies have calculated that Europeans could ingest as many as 11,000 tiny pieces of plastic a year, through consuming seafood or accidentally eating bits of packaging, it has never been proven until now. Scientists at the Austrian Environment Agency and the University of Vienna analysed stool samples of people from eight countries and found every one contained microplastics.

In some cases nine different types of plastic were found in a single sample. On average, 20 microplastic particles per 10g of human waste were found. “This is the first study of its kind and confirms ... that plastics ultimately reach the human gut,” said Dr Philipp Schwabl, the lead researcher who presented the findings at the United European Gastroenterology meeting. “While the highest plastic concentrations in animal studies have been found in the gut, the smallest microplastic particles are capable of entering

the bloodstream, lymphatic system and may even reach the liver. We need further research to understand what this means for human health.” Microplastics are particles of plastic less than 5mm and are used in various products. They also form when large pieces break down through weathering, degradation or wear and tear. Microplastics – shed by everything from synthetic clothing to road paint – are present in 83 per cent of tap water samples, all German beers and even in European rainwater, studies show.

Experts fear that microplastics in the body may damage the immune system, trigger inflammation, and can help carry toxins such as mercury or pesticides into the body. The study looked at eight individuals from Finland, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, the UK and Austria. Their food diaries showed that all were exposed to plastics during the week by consuming plastic-wrapped foods or drinking from plastic bottles. Six of them consumed sea fish, that often consume microplastics. - NZME

Wonder Woman delayed The world will have to wait a while longer for the Wonder Woman sequel, which will now arrive in cinemas in mid-2020. Warner Bros. announced that Wonder Woman 1984 will now open on June 5, 2020 — three years since the release of the first film, which made more than US $820 million at the box office worldwide. The sequel, which will see Gal Gadot return as the titular Amazonian superhero, had been slated for a November 2019 release. Patty Jenkins is returning as director and has teased fans with tidbits about the series’ time jump to the 1980s.

Our firefighters need a helping hand E

very time a fire alarm goes off in our district a group of hardy souls drop whatever it is they are doing and run to the rescue. It doesn’t matter if they’re halfway through their dinner, just about to jump into the shower or even four hours into what could have been a full night’s sleep, they leave it all behind to go and help those in need. We’re bloody lucky to have an incredible group of firefighters right around our district. They’re a dedicated bunch of volunteers who do it for the love of being able to make that little bit of difference. Some might never save a life,

some might not be able to stop a house from burning to the ground or a complete paddock of crop from being wasted, but they will always do their best for anyone concerned when they are asked to. But the battle is real, our firefighters are flat out. The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade is one of the busiest

volunteer units in New Zealand and unless there is a dramatic reduction in call-outs, will reach 400 call-outs in the 12 months of 2018. That’s some huge numbers for a group of volunteers. A lot of the call-outs aren’t for anything in particular. There are a lot of alarm activations thrown into the mix that’s for sure. But it doesn’t stop them from walking away from their jobs to jump in the truck and go and check it out. The thing is though, as great as our volunteer firefighters are, they can only do so much. The buck ultimately rests with

us as a community. It might seem like an odd situation, but the firefighting crews of Mid Canterbury wouldn’t mind if they were less busy than they are. And that’s where we can step in and play a role. By ensuring we are as safe as we possibly can when it comes to fire or burning something – we automatically reduce the chance of having to call the fire brigade. A lot of that attention will be pointed in the direction of our more rural corners – particularly when it comes to rubbish fires and burn-offs, but it’s as much about the town folk being vigilant as well.

If you light a firepit to sit outside one night and enjoy the warmer evenings a little bit longer, make sure you put it out properly. A good nor’west wind can flare something like that up in a heartbeat and any stray embers could spell disaster. So, it is pretty simple. I would doubt there is anyone who would begrudge the work done by our firefighters and any chance to help them out should be welcomed. So be smart, if you’re burning something, burn it safe – or you might just find out that you’re burning a lot more than you bargained for.

xtraordinary scenes in the foyer of Parliament last week. We are now as familiar with them as we are with details of the gruesome death of Jamel Khasghoggi in the Saudi consulate in Turkey. Jami-Lee Ross’ treatment by National has, at least so far, been marginally less brutal. National’s hitherto “conventional”, “reliable” representative for Botany, Jami-Lee Ross, holds media spellbound as he delivers hour-long tirade against his erstwhile friend and current leader, Simon Bridges. He ends by announcing his *resignation from the party and his decision to stand in the resultant by-election for the electorate where, at last year’s election, he had a majority of just under 13,000. This pre-exempts Bridges’ concurrent caucus meeting where it is unanimously been decided to expel J-L.R from the party, forthwith. ( * Later rescinded by Ross in favour of staying on as an Independent in Parliament once the extreme unlikelihood of his standing and winning a by-election in Botany as an Independent had dawned on his troubled mind.) Such a public display of mayhem and vitriol in the National Party is said to be unprecented. The eyes and ears of the members of the media on hand to witness and listen to this cataclysmic political explosion will remember October 16, 2018 as a turning point in their careers, if not their very lives. Among Jami-Lee Ross’ earliest, and most serious allegations against Simon Bridges was one involving a wealthy Chinese businessman’s donation of $100,000 to the party, which, according to the, “on a mission”, Ross, Bridges asked him to break into different, sub $15,000 “parcels”, with concocted names attached, so they would meet the requirements of electoral law. If that had turned out to be true, Bridges would have found

All in all, Jami-Lee Ross could have said to have been “thirsting for revenge”, which might go at least some way to explaining his hour-long diatribe. In, between, Ross has taken to the police a number of secret recordings of what he claims is Bridges instructing him to break up the donation (as described above). The conversations include also racial and dismissive comments about several of their National colleagues. All in all, an imbroglio without borders. As I said last week, however this brutish affair pans out it has already, surely, put an end to any forlorn hopes Bridges may have had of becoming Prime Minister in 2020. The fact he was ever chosen to take over the party from Bill English was always both a surprise and a mistake. For all sorts of reasons he has not got what it takes to lead a political party to victory, “anytime soon”. Charisma and mana seem to have by-passed him, both vital characteristics in the make-up of a successful political leader. He lacks, also, a telegenic presence which, these days, is the most important trait a would-be Prime Minister can possess. Now, as Bridges crawls, bruised and bleeding, out from under this collapse and control of his party, National will now have to go through an urgent search for a suitable replacement

himself inextricably wedged between the devil and the deep blue sea. His replies to persistent media questioning on the issue were less than convincing, consisting of endlessly repeated references to the matter now “being in the hands of the police”. He had, he insisted, “done nothing wrong”. Unsurprisingly, that issue has now become sufficiently fudged for Bridges to survive its potential dangers. Although the member for Botany has some “form” in matters of challenging the behaviour of “senior officers” – not least his spat some years ago with Len Brown, then Mayor of Auckland – his apparently unprovoked outburst – as well as similar comments he had made the day before – seemed to stupefy his National colleagues (now, former, colleagues.) That Bridges had also accused him of being the now legendary “leaker” of his, Bridges’, “gettingto-know-the-nation” tour by limo and expensive hotel (as alleged) and that he, Ross, had recently had mental troubles, further enraged the Botany man, which is why he drove “nine hours” from Auckland to Wellington so as to be in position to launch his broadside condemnation at precisely the moment he was, himself, being condemned by the Top Brass of the National Party. Bridges had, by then, also managed to throw in a number of accusations of *sexual assault

for him, and a lot sooner than they might have anticipated. This time it has to be a woman. National seem not to have a man likely to cause palpitations in the Ardern camp. Judith Collins would be a no-nonsense popular choice; if she were fit, Nikki Kaye, already a double political winner over Jacinda, would be an admirable foil while Amy Adams would bring intellect, erudition and a rich degree of articulation to the position. So, Simon, this is your Rubicon moment – every politician seems to have to have a “moment” of some sort these days. For the good of the party, you must gird your loins and cross it. (Your Rubicon). As you do, think Andrew Little. He accepted his fate, realised his un-electability and stood aside for Jacinda. It was a “Far, far better thing than he had ever done before” (Dickens). Simon Bridges, you should do the same. By so doing, you will establish a moment of admirable selflessness in the annals of the National Party. A worthy legacy, surely, if not quite the one you may have had in mind. Sir Peter’s $150m real estate empire Sir Peter Jackson’s hometown once flirted with labelling itself Wellywood, but perhaps Jacksonville would be more appropriate after revelations the rich-list director has acquired more than a hundred million dollars in Wellington real estate over the past two decades. According to data collated by CoreLogic the Hollywood director – and driving force behind the capital’s subsidised Wellywood film industry – has assembled a property empire based in Wellington, but with outposts stretching from Masterton to Queenstown, worth $150m. HRV Clean Water, owned by Vector, has been fined $440,000 after pleading guilty to making unsubstantiated claims about the benefits of its water filters and also for making misleading claims about the quality of New Zealand’s home water supply. The fine was issued by Judge John Macdonald in the Auckland District Court on October 19 for claims made in promotional material between July 2, 2014 and October 12, 2017. The unsubstantiated claims related to the ability of a magnetic ‘ioniser’ in its water filter systems to soften water, which would in turn help to relieve drinkers of skin conditions, such as eczema and dermatitis. The claims made included statements such as “reduces skin irritations, dermatitis and eczema” and “removes existing lime scale and extends the life of your appliances”. Commissioner Anna Rawlings said the company did not have reasonable grounds to make such claims. “HRV relied heavily on the information provided by the supplier without getting this verified by an expert,” Rawlings said.

HRV has been hit with big fine, following legal action by the Commerce Commission. “Although HRV had some testing done, the results did not provide a reasonable basis for the various claims it had made about the benefits of using the filters.” HRV made further misleading representations about the quality of the water and about the additives in New Zealand’s home water supply. This included the claim that “90 per cent of our waterways are polluted below swimming standards, yet this is where we source our water from”, and that the filter would “remove many of the additives,

as well as funny tastes and smells from your water supply”. Rawlings said these misleading statements likely created concern among consumers. In a statement released yesterday, HRV said that it accepted the findings and the fine imposed. The company said it has taken steps to address the concerns and remove any inaccurate information. “We also put in place additional processes to ensure tighter control over marketing material in the future,” the statement said. - NZME

Tauranga struggling to fill skilled roles Tauranga is in the midst of a perfect storm as industries across the board struggle to find skilled workers, despite strong interest from overseas and New Zealand to the city. Recruitment agencies claim it is hard to fill some positions, with one saying there is a gap in the market between those seeking work and the jobs available. Priority One projects manager

Delectable, delicious asparagus If you’re lucky enough to have an asparagus patch in your back yard you’ll be enjoying one of the few vegetables that are available for only a very short season. While most vegetables are grown year round in some part of New Zealand or imported, asparagus has just one season, October to December. And that makes it an absolute treat eaten alone with just a dab of butter, salt and lemon juice or combined with other ingredients as part of a meal.

Sundried tomato, asparagus and olive loaf

Asparagus and meatball pasta 500g pork mince Chopped chillies Chopped onion Salt and pepper 1 egg, beaten 1/2 C breadcrumbs 500g pack orzo pasta Large bunch of asparagus, sliced in half lengthways 200g tub crème fraîche ■ Combine first six ingredients and roll into balls. ■ Heat oven to 180°C. ■ Put the meatballs on a tray lined with foil, season. ■ Cook for 20 mins until cooked through. ■ Bring pan of salted water to the boil, add the orzo and cook for 4 mins. ■ Add asparagus and simmer for 4 mins more. ■ Drain, then tip back into the pan along with the meatballs. ■ Add crème fraîche, mix and season well.

Asparagus soup 25g butter A little vegetable oil 350g asparagus spears, stalks chopped 3 shallots, finely sliced 2 garlic cloves, crushed 2 large handfuls spinach 700ml vegetable or chicken stock Olive oil, for drizzling Sour dough bread, to serve ■ Heat the butter and oil in a large saucepan until foaming. ■ Fry the asparagus tips for a few mins to soften. ■ Remove and set aside. ■ Add the shallots, asparagus stalks and garlic. ■ Cook for 5-10 mins until softened but still bright. ■ Stir through the spinach, pour over the stock, bring to the boil, then blitz with a hand blender. ■ Season generously and add hot water to loosen if needed. ■ Ladle into bowls and scatter the asparagus tips over each. ■ Drizzle with olive oil and serve with sourdough bread.

Baked asparagus and salmon

100ml olive oil Extra oil for greasing 250g asparagus spears, each cut into 3 pieces 200g self-raising flour 1T thyme leaves 3 large eggs, lightly beaten 100ml milk Handful pitted black olives 100g sundried tomatoes, roughly chopped 100g gruyere cheese, grated ■ Heat oven to 190°C. ■ Oil and line the base of a loaf tin (approx 22 x 10 x 5cm) with baking paper. ■ Cook the asparagus in boiling, salted water for 2 mins, drain. ■ Cool quickly under cold running water. Pat dry. ■ Mix the flour and thyme with seasoning in a large bowl. ■ Make a well in the centre. ■ Add the eggs, milk and oil, stirring all the time to draw the flour into the centre. DESIGNER COMFORT ■ Beat for 1 min make a smooth MADE to IN NORWAY batter. ■ Reserve 5 asparagus tips and a few olives. ■ Add the remaining asparagus, tomatoes, olives and two-thirds of the cheese to the batter. ■ Pour into the tin, then put the reserved asparagus and olives on top. ■ Sprinkle with the remaining cheese. ■ Bake for 35-40 mins until the cake feels firm to the touch and is golden and crusty on top. ■ Cool in the tin for 5 mins, then turn out and cool on a wire rack.

Asparagus pasta 2 bunches asparagus, woody ends removed 1 drizzle rice bran oil 1 pinch chilli flakes 250g spaghetti 2T pine nuts 1 small lemon, juice and zest 2T fresh parsley, roughly chopped 2T fresh mint, roughly chopped 2T olive oil, use a good quality

12 asparagus spears, blanched 2T chopped dill, and extra for decorating 1/4 t salt and pepper 6 eggs, lightly whisked 1T olive oil 1 knob butter 2 spring onions, sliced thinly 200g NZ hot-smoked salmon, flaked 1T capers

■ Place asparagus in an oven tray. ■ Drizzle with a little rice bran oil and sprinkle with the chilli flakes. ■ Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper. ■ Roast for approximately 15 minutes at 200°C. ■ Cook the spaghetti according to packet instructions, in plenty of boiling water, until al dente. ■ In a small frying pan, gently toast the pine nuts until golden. Set aside. ■ Drain the pasta. ■ Add the asparagus, the lemon juice and zest, the pine nuts, and the herbs. ■ Drizzle through the olive oil. ■ Gently toss to combine and serve immediately. ■ Garnish with parmesan.

■ Preheat an oven to 180°C. ■ Cut asparagus in half, retaining the spear ends for the top. ■ Slice the remaining halves into 1cm pieces. Add dill, salt and pepper to the eggs. ■ In an ovenproof frying pan, heat the oil and butter. ■ Add the spring onions and cook for 2 minutes until softened. ■ Add the sliced asparagus and cook for 1 minute. ■ Remove from the heat. ■ Pour the seasoned eggs into the pan. ■ Poke the flaked salmon evenly through the eggs. ■ Decorate the top with the spears. ■ Place into the oven for 25 minutes until puffed and just set. ■ Take from the oven, sprinkle with the dill and capers. ■ Serve warm with your favourite chutney.

Hint:

If for some happy reason you are inundated with asparagus, freeze them by blanching first. Plunge into boiling water for 3 to 4 minutes and remove immediately to chilled water. Drain. Pack in containers, label and freeze for up to nine months.

The balance of power BY GREGOR PAUL It’s too hard to resist going all Star Wars when analysing the changing roles played by Codie Taylor and Dane Coles. In 2015 when Taylor first came into the squad, he was the raw youngster being given the chance to learn his craft at the school of Coles, who was at the time, the world’s best hooker. Taylor was Luke Skywalker, Coles Obi-wan Kenobe. That was the way of things until 2017 when in an alarming further similarity to the movie, Coles, like Kenobe, was struck down. Concussion and calf injuries saw him miss much of the first part of 2017, while a serious knee injury ruled him out of almost all of this season. And with Coles out of the picture, again, eerily similar to the Star Wars story, Taylor fasttracked the learning of his craft. With regular game time, Taylor grew in confidence and he’s been one of the most consistently impressive All Blacks since the Lions series last year. Which means that here we are now with the old master ready to come back, but not necessarily in such an obvious mentoring capacity. If there was a bit of daylight between them at the start of 2017, then there no longer is. There is certainly not an obvious gap between them in terms of ability and potential impact and at the moment Taylor sits as the number one, until Coles has at least had some more time on the field, having only managed bit parts in the Mitre 10 Cup so far this year. Perhaps when he’s back in the groove, Coles will reclaim his starting role, but there has been a role reversal that should last for the next few weeks at least. Taylor, once the pupil, is now playing the role of teacher. “I came into the mix in 2015 and he has always been unreal for me,” Taylor says of Coles.

Tongans put on a show

n Saturday night I witnessed some of the most incredible scenes I’ve ever seen on New Zealand sporting soil, and the most incredible part of it was that there wasn’t a New Zealand team in sight. Like thousands of people around the country I tuned in to the first ever rugby league test match between Australia and Tonga at Mt Smart Stadium, and it was just amazing. It wasn’t so much what happened on the field, as it was about what happened off the field. Mt Smart was bathed in a brilliant sea of red as New Zealand’s large Tongan community stepped out in full colour and voice to support their Mate Ma’a Tonga side. I have been to Mt Smart Stadium a few times before to watch my beloved Warriors, and I can not imagine what it must have been like to have been there in person on Saturday night’s grand occasion. Watching avdily as the thousands of people all wearing red

and proudly toting their Tongan flags swarmed down the hill and into the stadium as the game neared, and then seeing just how much red there was in the stands was truly a sight to behold. There was the odd Australian supporter there, every now and then you’d catch a glimpse of the union jack peeking through the mass of Tongan flags, but they were well and truly outsupported. I’m sure the Australian players well knew that they were going to be on the losing side when it came to support from the sidelines, but judging by the looks on the faces of some of the players as the two sides walked out of the players’ tunnel, I think even they were surprised by the scene they were met with. A couple of tentative wee smiles and ‘what on earth have we walked into’ sort of looks were exchanged between players. There were plenty of players in both sides who have played in big league matches before,

whether it be NRL grand finals, State of Origin, or World Cup finals, but this was something else altogether. Tongan fans are a passionate bunch. The support for their side wasn’t limited to Auckland on Saturday, or in the days leading up to the historical clash. If you have ventured on to the roads of Ashburton at all in the past week, I can almost guarantee that you would have passed a car with Tongan flags flying on the roof, hanging out windows or draped over bonnets. Sometimes passion can go too far. A while ago referee Matt Chechin spoke out about the

death threats he received after refereeing the Rugby League World Cup semi-final between Tonga and England, which Tonga lost. But on Saturday night, the passion was all positive. The Tongans didn’t have a lot to cheer about when it came to the on-field action and the final score, but when there was something to cheer about the crowd could probably just about have been heard from the top of the Sky Tower. The roar when Tevita Pangai Junior spied a gap on the 15-minute mark and went in for his side’s first try after Australia had scored a couple of quick ones, was huge. It may not have been Tonga’s night on the field, but the match was a win. The tears on the cheeks of the Tongans as they sung the national anthem, and the feeling they put out when they performed their Sipi Tau showed just how much the occasion meant to the players. And it was a pleasure to watch it.

A hole-in-one is a memorable feat for any golfer, but Methven golfer Tania Wilson’s first ace had some added wow factor. Wilson was playing at the Ocean Course in the holiday resort of Kauai, Hawaii, when she struck her first ace in September. The ace came on the picturesque course’s par three, 115-yard eighth hole and was struck with the 19-handicap golfer’s own nine wood, with Wilson and husband Stuart having taken their own clubs on the long trip to Hawaii. The couple were on a Charlie’s Golf Tour, a holiday which saw them cruise around the islands’ golfing spots, clubs in tow, and playing five rounds of golf in 10 days. It was the third time that the couple had been on one of the unique golfing holidays, but it was the first time either of them had achieved the rare golfing feat of a hole-inone. “If you want to know the real

story, my husband said he nearly got one the day before, so I showed him the next day how it was really done,” Wilson joked. “It was an expensive shout though, the dollar was not in our favour.” Wilson, a golfer of 14 years, said the shot felt good off the tee. “I was really pleased with it. “I went ‘that felt good’ and the girls said it went in the hole and I said ‘no it didn’t, it was short and it went behind’,” Wilson said. But when they got to the green her playing mates wouldn’t even let her get her putter out of her bag, making her go straight to the hole to check, and the ball was indeed in the hole. Sadly though, the rest of Wilson’s Ocean Course round didn’t quite live up to that perfect shot on the eighth. “I had eight points in two holes, then I blew up after that. “The reality clicked in.” But, it gave her one heck of a story to tell when she got back to the Methven Golf Club.

Raptors go four straight Kawhi Leonard scored 22 points, Kyle Lowry had 16 points and a season-high 14 assists, and Toronto never trailed in a 127106 victory over the Charlotte Hornets yesterday, the Raptors’ fourth straight win to open the NBA season. Jonas Valanciunas scored 17 points, Danny Green had 16, and Serge Ibaka added 15 as the Raptors won for the ninth time in 11 meetings with the Hornets. Toronto is the first NBA team to reach four wins. Denver (3-0) can match the Raptors when it hosts Sacramento today. Bolt’s future uncertain Usain Bolt’s A-League bid could end this week after the Central Coast Mariners excluded the Olympic great from team training until his contract offer impasse is resolved. Bolt scored two goals in his maiden start for the Mariners more than a week ago with the club confirming yesterday they tabled a contract to the Jamaican sprint superstar, who has been on an indefinite trial since mid-August. Reports claim the Mariners offer was a meagre $150,000, with the 32-year-old reportedly seeking $3 million. - AAP

Mourinho not moving Jose Mourinho has dismissed speculation linking him with a return to Real Madrid saying he wants to stay on as Manchester United manager beyond his current contract. Current Real coach Julen Lopetegui is under pressure following a string of results that has left his side seventh in La Liga and Spanish media have reported that Mourinho is favourite if Lopetegui is sacked. “My future is here,” Mourinho said. “I have a contract and until the final days of my contract I am only thinking about Manchester United.” - AAP

Chelsea assistant coach Marco Ianni has been charged with improper conduct by the English Football Association after his exuberant celebrations in front of the Manchester United bench sparked an altercation with their boss Jose Mourinho. Chelsea scored a late equaliser to hold United to a 2-2 draw in the Premier League on Saturday and Ianni celebrated the goal in front of United’s bench, leading to an ugly melee. - AAP

Sociedad, Girona draw Real Sociedad have moved into the top half of Spain’s La Liga after a stalemate with Girona. The hosts had to settle for a point and climbed to ninth after the goalless draw. Ozil stars as Arsenal gun down Leicester By Mark Mann-Bryan A sublime display from captain Mesut Ozil inspired Arsenal as they came from behind to beat Leicester in the Premier League and extend their winning run to 10 games. After a shaky start from the Gunners, Leicester took the lead through a Hector Bellerin own goal but Ozil – back in the side following a back spasm – turned home an equaliser on the stroke of half-time. He was then heavily involved in two goals for substitute PierreEmerick Aubameyang, who had also netted twice off the bench at Fulham last time out, with Arsenal

eventually running out 3-1 winners at the Emirates Stadium. Coach Unai Emery will be slightly concerned by the pedestrian nature of Arsenal’s opening 40 minutes, but the Spaniard will be pleased to toast a seven-match Premier League winning streak which has taken his side to within two points of the top. While Arsenal were flat-footed from the start, the visitors started particularly brightly with Kelechi Iheanacho twice threatening in the opening exchanges. Embellish back on track Embellish showed a glimpse of his talent at last week’s Te Awamutu trials, but he won’t be part of the Te Akau Racing Stables squad competing at the New Zealand Cup meeting at Riccarton next month. Winner of the Gr.1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) last November, the son of Savabeel hasn’t raced since finishing midfield in the Gr.1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington in March. In the meantime he has had just two trials, the first when unplaced at Cambridge earlier this month and the other when beating Caprikosa over 1150m last Thursday. “He looks to be back on track,”

trainer Jamie Richards said. “He’s taken a bit of time this year, but Opie (Bosson) was pleased with his trial.” A winner of three of his eight starts, Embellish holds a nomination for the Gr.2 Coupland’s Bakeries Mile (1600m) at Riccarton on November 14, but won’t be taking his place in the feature. “It’s come around a bit too soon,” Richards said. “We’ll play around with him and have him ready for Ellerslie over the Christmas-New Year period. “He could start off in an open 1300m at Tauranga on November 3 and could be a chance for a race like the Gr.2 Rich Hill Mile at Ellerslie (January 1).”

The Lindsays bought a 50 per cent interest in Embellish after his Group One win and soon afterward he finished second in the Listed Karaka Million 3YO Classic (1600m) at Ellerslie, splitting Scott Base and Savvy Coup. Though Embellish will be missing from the Coupland’s Bakeries Mile, his stablemate Te Akau Shark is currently the $1.90 Fixed Odds favourite in the 1600m feature, while Sword Of Osman put his hand up for a tilt at the Gr.1 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) on November 10 with a narrow win in Monday’s Gr.2 James and Annie Sarten Memorial Stakes (1400m) at Te Rapa. - NZME

The duo will play the two remaining one-day A games against Pakistan A in Dubai this week, before linking with the Black Caps as part of a 13-player squad. The sun didn’t stop smiling down on the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre over Labour weekend, helping to make the annual Ashburton Trust Junior Tennis Open a huge success. Around 130 young tennis players from around the South Island converged on the tennis centre for the tournament, which began on Saturday morning and wrapped up on Monday. The 14s age group was the one

which attracted the biggest field, and the singles titles were won by Nathan McKenzie for the boys and Amelia McKeown for the girls, beating Luca Landells and Brianna Howell in their respective finals. The 14s doubles titles went the way of McKenzie and Ben Michael, who beat Landells and Tyler Leonard in the final, while the girls’ final was won by McKeown and Howell, who defeated Lucy Crawford and Phoebe GuileHughes in a three set final.

In the older age group, the 16/18 boys’ singles title was won by Grayson Cullen, who only dropped one game in the final against Jenner Johnson, while the doubles title was won by Ayoub Ahmad and Cullen. They downed the Ashburton pairing of Connor Brosnahan and Bryn Looij in the final 6-0 6-3. Down in the 12s, the girls’ singles final saw Charlie Byers defeat Maia Liu, while the girls’ doubles final was won by Nishitha Maarka and Isabella Van Dooren.

For the boys, the 12s singles title was taken out by top seed Josh Karathra who beat Oliver Bubb in the final 4-6 6-3 6-3, and the doubles title was also won by the top seeds, Tyrell Eden and Gus Preston. In the 10s, third seed Tate Aikawa downed top seed Jacob Adam in the semi-finals on his way to the final, in which he beat Ashburton’s Riley Breen 2-4 4-1 7-4. Breen took out the doubles title though, teaming up with Josh Gilbert and taking out the final.

For the 10s girls, the singles title was won by Lucy Young, while the doubles title was won by Aminah Ahmad and Young. The youngest competitors were in the under 9s section, where the boys’ singles was won by Hugo Brosnahan, who beat Anzac Robinson Hawkins in the final, and the girls’ title was won by Arabella Brosnahan in a round robin. Arabella Brosnahan then teamed up with Annalise King to take out the doubles title.
