Mid Canterbury’s Five Star Beef feedlot is suspected by ministry officials to have the mycoplasma bovis cattle disease. The Ashburton feedlot, owned by Anzco Foods, has been issued with a notice of direction by Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) after it received 44 cattle from a supplier that has since been

found to have M. bovis. The cattle are from an undisclosed South Island property, outside of Canterbury, and have been quarantined. “The cattle are suspected to have been infected before they arrived at Five Star Beef and quarantine protocols were implemented immediately following notification of these animals of interest,” said chief executive Peter Conley.

He said there was no issue with eating beef from infected herds as MPI had confirmed the disease was not a food safety risk. “We are working closely with MPI on a plan to manage the impact of M. bovis on the property,” he said.

Exciting milestone for civic centre

It’s been years in the making, but yesterday a giant step forward was taken in a project that will see Ashburton with a new administration building and public library. The Ashburton District Council has appointed Athfield Architects Ltd as lead architect and designer for the multi-million dollar project’s design work. This will see a new council administration building and library built in Baring Square East. The new build will require the demolition of the Methodist Church Hall, the old Ashburton County Council building and possibly a Havelock Street building now owned by the council and currently used as a vehicle service centre. The future of another building on the site, the historic Pioneer Hall, is unclear. Athfield Architects’ proposal was one of 13 received and short-listed to four, before being evaluated, under a process carried out by Logic Group, project manager for the building.

Of particular importance in selecting the successful tenderer was that they had extensive experience in designing civic administration projects throughout New Zealand, mayor Donna Favel said. “Athfield’s impressive track record of designing civic projects, including council offices, community facilities and libraries, speaks to their ability to successfully carry out master planning and architectural design work in this space,” she said. The architect’s brief was to design a new building on the site adjacent to Baring Square East, and while that would disappoint some people because it would see the demolition of the former County Council building, it did create an exciting opportunity to incorporate Baring Square East into the design of the new building, Favel said. “Councillors and council staff were now keen to being working with Athfield to continue moving the project forward to the next

In addition, neighbouring farms are some distance from cattle on the property.’’ Anzco agriculture and livestock general manager Grant Bunting said the feedlot had “exemplary’’ record-keeping for incoming cattle, but the cattle had arrived before the property they were on was identified with the disease. “That is one of the challenges we have and one of the issues of the feedlot. We bring in cattle every day with the checks and balances okay, but we could find in four weeks that the same thing can happen again.’’ Testing incoming cattle for the disease was impractical because of the length of the tests, their invasiveness and the scale of a business bringing in 40,000 cattle a year. Conley said the feedlot had also received attention this week from the animal rights group, Safe, questioning the merits of grain-finishing animals on feedlots in New Zealand. “This issue is unrelated to the current challenges Five Star Beef is facing with M. bovis. Any farm infected by M. bovis is going through a very difficult time because of the uncertainty and stress associated with it.’’ Five Star Beef is the largest feedlot in New Zealand and was established in 1991. It produces 40,000 to 45,000

head of cattle each year, mainly as wagyu beef for the Japanese market. Cattle are grazed usually for about six months before being finished on grain on average for 75 days to reach target weights although there are shorter and longer programmes. In the feedlot groups of 250-260 cattle go to 60m by 60m uncovered pens. M. bovis was first found in July last year. In its latest update MPI said the total number of confirmed infected properties was 63 with 35 of them still active. Five Star Beef said animal welfare was a high priority for the company and it was not in its interests to compromise animal welfare. The company is working closely with MPI to carry out all required measures and has introduced additional controls to minimise the risk of the disease spreading. Under MPI direction, Five Star Beef will continue to restrict access in and out of the site and ensure all vehicles and work boots are cleaned with the provided washing facilities. MPI issues a notice of direction to farms when it believes that taking stock from a property could spread M. bovis. The notice does not restrict movement of stock or goods on to the farm, but cattle can only move off the farm with a permit. Anzco, mainly Japanese owned, is one of New Zealand’s largest exporters with sales of $1.45 billion and it employs 3000 staff worldwide.

Police are reminding drivers to keep off their phones while behind the wheel and it appears Mid Canterbury drivers are among those who should listen. Following a mobile phone operation in Wellington earlier this month, which caught a “disappointing” number of distracted drivers, police are suggesting that mobile phones be kept off or on silent while driving to reduce temptation. A police spokesperson said that drivers using mobile phones has become a significant problem. Last year, $1.8 million in fines was dished out around the country to drivers using their phones. That included 348 drivers using their phones while driving in Mid and South Canterbury, equating to more than $27,200 in fines. Drivers can be issued a fine of up to $80 and since the law was introduced in 2009, more than one infringement ticket has been handed out a day across Mid and South Canterbury on average. Ashburton driving instructor Alan Baird said the danger is twofold. “If you’re focused on your phone, not the road, then you’re not aware of what’s around you. Your vision is distracted, but also your mind,” he said. Earlier this week he had been

taking a driving lesson and had to warn his pupil to stay out of the way of a girl who was “head down, looking at her phone”. “You could see her swerving around the road,” he said. “It completely takes your attention.” Senior Sergeant Vaughn Lapslie said drivers using phones are un-

able to focus on what is happening around them. “When you are out driving have a look around you when you stop at the lights … a lot of people will look at their phones and start tapping away,” he said. “Often as they do this they then miss the green light and the traffic moving off. It is the same level

of distraction when someone is driving, but obviously the consequences of that moment’s distraction or inattention are greater at 50km/h or faster.” During this year’s Road Safety Week, police were working to highlight distractions as one of the biggest contributors to crashes. More than 40 New Zealanders

died on the road last year due to distractions like cellphones, and an additional 240 were seriously injured. The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) estimated that distractions are a factor in at least 12 per cent of crashes and drivers sending a text are around 23 times more likely to crash.

Organisers of Ashburton’s Suffrage 125th celebrations have scored every event organiser’s dream – an overwhelming response that has forced them to move to a larger venue. The event to mark the 125th anniversary of women’s suffrage in New Zealand will now be held in the Ashburton Event Centre. Community response was so strong that the initial plan to hold the celebration in the Ashburton

Museum had to be abandoned, said museum director Tanya Robinson. “Community interest in the event has been absolutely fantastic. We are thrilled with the overwhelming response of people wishing to attend and commemorate such an important milestone in our country’s history. Women and men from throughout Mid Canterbury were at the forefront of championing suffrage, and it’s fitting that so many people would wish to take part in com-

memorating the occasion.,” she said. Winter virus hits preschool numbers

A late winter virus appears to be cutting a swathe through preschool rolls. Stepping Stones at Braebrook has had a string of sick children over the past two weeks and the virus is now hitting staff, manager Kim Wall said. “We’ve had lots of high temperatures and some children have had a nasty cough, but our parents are pretty good at keeping their children at home,” she said. On one day this week the centre had several teachers off sick so it was all hands on deck when it came to having staff on the floor, Wall said. “We’re fortunate in that we fund extra teachers ourselves so we’re running above the ministry’s official staffing level.” And that meant when staff were off sick, there were always good options available to ensure the centre could still meet its staff-to-student ratio, she said. Some preschools appear to have escaped the virus, with staff saying they’d experienced little more than the usual winter ills, but at Jigsaw, staff confirmed that they had had a small number of children who experienced similar symptoms to the Braebrook youngsters.

Speedy motorists

A late winter virus has been hitting some local preschools hard. The virus, that typically has symptoms of a headache and high temperature, is also bumping up numbers through medical centres, GP spokesperson Eti Avnit said. The illness, however, was not the flu that was anticipated to hit New Zealand this winter, she said.

She applauded the efforts of preschools in ensuring students who became unwell were collected by parents and said that simple hygiene measures such as handwashing and not sharing drink bottles were crucial in helping stem the spread of the illness. Parents of ill children should

trust their instincts and if they were concerned they should consult their GP, she said. “Seek the attention of your GP, they’ll know your child and even if your doctor is busy, bring your child in. They can be assessed by a nurse and they’ll know if you’ll need to see the doctor.”

The bill is about giving people with a “terminal illness or a grievous and irremediable medical condition” the option of requesting assisted dying. The motivation for this bill is compassion. It includes a range of safeguards to ensure the assisted dying option cannot be abused. When the public was asked its thoughts on the bill, 35,000 sub-

missions were received and these will be heard by members of the select committee MPs during a 25 day New Zealand-wide tour. A final report on the bill will come back to Parliament at the end of March. Assisted dying is legal in the Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland. Ashburton’s End of Life Choice Bill meeting will be held on Monday night in the Seniors’ Centre at 5.30pm.

Methven’s Forest Drive is a speedsters highway, according to data recorded by electronic speed display devices. The device measured motorists’ speeds from July 4 to July 31 and found that 29 per cent of drivers were travelling in excess of the 50 kilometre speed limit. Over that period almost half of motorists were recorded travelling between 47 and 50 kilometres per hour. The stretch of road also had its share of dawdlers with 24 per cent travelling below the speed limit. Most who travelled above the speed limit did so at between 51 and 60 km/h – 25 per cent, while four per cent of motorists were travelling at speeds of up to 70 km/h.

Missing man Christchurch police are searching for a 40-year-old man who went missing after a fire at his home on Thursday night. Michael Croucher was last seen by a neighbour at his Woolston home at about 5pm, police said. Police have said there was no evidence to suggest he was caught up or injured in the fire. Croucher was an avid cyclist in and around Woolston. People who have seen Croucher were encouraged to contact police on 03 363 7400. – NZME

Mayor pitches Mid Canterbury to medical students Ashburton mayor Donna Favel made a big pitch this week to capture the hearts of Otago medical students in the hope they might opt for a career in rural medicine. The third year students from Otago Medical School spent time at the council and at Ashburton Hospital during a week-long visit to the Ashburton District. They also spent time in schools and with a range of health related organisations and services. The visit is designed to provide the students with an overview of a smaller rural community and an understanding of the health needs of that community. Several of the group of eight

were from rural areas, Favel said, and while she made the case for Ashburton as an ideal place to live and work, she told the students she knew they’d also be under pressure to return to their home towns too. Favel also discussed with students the roles the council played in other areas that would involve the medical profession, such as environmental health and civil defence. The students were: Isabelle Clarke, Courtney Hemi, Gillian Macken, Phillipa Rolleston, Matthew Shewan, Jonathan Svohnge, Alexander Torrie and Harry Wynne.

The colour of our lakes The impact of farming, forestry and climate change on our lakes has been captured by four years of satellite observations. The first comprehensive assessment of lake water colour, led by the University of Waikato’s Dr Moritz Lehmann, revealed the full global range – some being a stable blue, some varying strongly through the seasons, and others suffering the effects of man-made pollution. In the data, colour was expressed as “dominant wavelength” – an intensification of the colour as perceived by the human eye. Lehmann said that while clear and pristine lakes were blue, a non-blue colour did not necessarily mean that the water was polluted. The colour of water was related to the amount of algae, suspended sediments and tannins, or brown soil-derived organic material, he said.

“These substances are naturally present, but may also be enhanced by pollution.” The development of the spacebased methodology was timely as water colour had recently been added to the New Zealand national environmental monitoring standards for lakes. According to the most recent data, more than half of the lakes regularly monitored in New Zealand are graded from average to poor. Long-term monitoring data showed levels of total nitrogen, total phosphorus, algal indicator chlorophyll-a and visual clarity were generally improving at lakes over the 2004 to 2013 period, but trends had been worsening for bottom-water dissolved oxygen and nitrate-nitrogen. Among those lakes consistently rated bad are Lake Horowhenua, Lake Wairarapa, and Lake Ellesmere. NZME

Currently anyone in New Zealand can set themselves up in business as a property manager, but that open market inevitably sees some renters getting a bad deal, says Ashburton Real Estate company owner Trevor Hurley. He’s backing a call that’s growing within the real estate industry for property managers to become regulated as a way of protecting the interests of all

tenants and landlords. “Most of us are governed under REINZ and we have certain standards to keep up to but we compete with private property management companies with no standards they need to keep to,” Hurley said. Govt bailout for polytechs of another troubled polytechnic, Greymouth-based Tai Poutini. Hipkins said an independent financial adviser was appointed to Whitireia last month. “Whitireia will require $15m in 2018 to meet its cash shortfall and operating costs. Further support may be required in 2019 unless urgent action is taken,” he said. He said that while Unitec and Whitireia both have unique issues, they are not alone in facing the effects of falling student numbers. “This situation shows the absolute need for the work now being done under the Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics Roadmap 2020 to secure a viable future for the institutes of technology and polytechnics sector across New Zealand,” he said. “We need a strong polytechnic sector that delivers what New Zealand’s learners and employers need from it in a rapidly changing world, and at an affordable cost to taxpayers.” – NZME

The Government has announced a $65 million bailout for struggling Unitec and Whitireia polytechnics and a likely takeover of Whitireia and the Wellington Institute of Technology (Weltec) by a state-appointed commissioner. Education Minister Chris Hipkins visited Unitec at Mt Albert yesterday to announce a $50m loan for Unitec and a $15m capital injection for Porirua-based Whitireia. Hipkins said both Wellington institutes were struggling financially and he had decided to consult on dissolving their joint council and appointing a commissioner. “Like the Auckland-based Unitec, Porirua-based Whitireia is in extreme financial difficulty and approached the Government for urgent financial assistance,” he said. Unitec’s council was replaced last month by a commissioner, Murray Strong, who has also been appointed Crown manager

Relationship will remain strong New Zealand’s relationship with Australia will remain strong regardless of who leads it, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said. Turnbull fronted the media yesterday afternoon saying if he received a letter signed by a majority, he would call a party room meeting on Friday for the leadership challenge. Parliament following questions about Commonwealth funding for his wife’s childcare centres. Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters was in Canberra yesterday for regular talks with his Australian counterpart Julie Bishop. Peters told Radio NZ yesterday he had made it clear that New Zealand looked forward to a more stable political situation in Australia. Peters said the instability could have an impact on the wider Pacific region if it got out of hand. Peters said it was a situation of enormous uncertainty at present. – NZME

Bishop tipped to run too The Liberal leadership is shaping up to be a threeway contest with Julie Bishop poised to make a run for the top job. A senior Liberal source told news.com. au that the Foreign Minister would throw her hat in the ring in the event of a leadership spill today. There has been growing pressure on the Foreign Minister to declare herself as the third candidate for the top job, with members of cabinet “strongly” encouraging her to run, 7 News reports. With things in Canberra moving a mile a minute, it’s yet to be seen whether Bishop actually takes up the call, but a spokesperson for her office said she is “considering her options”. This in itself marks a shift from her previous position. When asked about her leadership ambitions in recent media interviews, Bishop emphasised her loyalty to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. Two nights ago, 7.30’s Leigh Sales asked the Foreign Minister whether she’d run if it meant saving the party. “That’s such a hypothetical. I mean, it’s got so many hypotheticals built into it,” Bishop responded, the day after she was re-elected to her position. “No. I’ve just been elected as deputy leader of the party. I don’t take that for granted, and I will do my very best to act out that role as deputy in support of the Coalition delivering good government for the Australian people.” Sales pointed out that the polls suggested she’d be their only chance at survival. “Peter Dutton made it clear in April that he wanted to be prime minister,” replied Bishop. “I think that was a signal to colleagues that he wants the job. I’ve got a job. I’m getting on with my job of delivering good government for the people of Australia, and supporting the Turnbull government in doing that.” A News Corp Australia poll showed Bishop is the preferred leader for the party with 34 per cent of votes, followed by Turnbull at 30 per cent, Tony Abbott at 17 per cent and Peter Dutton at 10 per cent. Turnbull has revealed he will resign as Prime Minister today if a spill motion is carried against him. “I will treat that as a vote of no confidence and I will not stand as a candidate in the ballot,” he said. Oblivion helmer Joe Kosinski is directing the film, a sequel to the 1986 Top Gun, from a script by Peter Craig, Justin Marks and Eric Warren Singer. This latest project will be set in a world of drone technology and will explore the end of the era of dogfighting, with Cruise portraying a flight instructor. Islamic State releases new audio from leader The Islamic State group has released a new militant audio recording, purportedly of its shadowy leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, his first in almost a year. In the audio, al-Baghdadi – whose whereabouts and fate remain unknown – urges followers to “persevere” and continue fighting the group’s enemies everywhere. The 54-minute audio entitled Give Glad Tidings to the Patient was released by the extremist group’s central media arm, alFurqan Foundation, yesterday evening. The audio’s authenticity could not be independently verified and there were no clues as to where it was recorded. The question of whether al-Baghdadi is

dead or alive has been a continuing source of mystery and confusion. The extremist group has lost around 90 percent of territory it controlled in Iraq and Syria in 2014, when IS declared its so-called “caliphate”. He is believed to be hiding somewhere in the desert that stretches across the Syrian-Iraqi border region. His last audio message was on September 28, 2017 in which he called on his followers to burn their enemies everywhere and target “media centers of the infidels.” In yesterday’s recording, al-Baghdadi congratulates followers on the occasion of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Ada and makes references to current events, including Turkey’s row with the United

States over its detention of American pastor Andrew Brunson. If the voice on the audio is confirmed to be that of al-Baghdadi, this would date the message to this month and disprove reports of his death. “America is going through the worst time in its entire existence,” al-Baghdad says, adding that Russia is competing with the US over regional influence and clout. He also criticises surrenders by the rebels in southern Syria to President Bashar Assad’s forces, calling them traitors and urges fighters to join the Islamic State group instead. He also urges patience, perseverance and continued jihad, or holy war. - AP

Your property is likely to be your most valuable asset, so it goes without saying that you’d want to insure it. If anything were to happen, like a fire or natural disaster, it can be hugely stressful emotionally and financially. Lately, many insurance companies have been reviewing the way they insure and what they charge as premiums, as natural events are only becoming more common worldwide. If you’re looking to buy or sell, it’s important to think carefully about your insurance options. “Insurance needs to be right up there on your to-do list when buying a home. A reputable lender will usually want proof that you’ve arranged property insurance before settlement,” says Kevin Lampen-Smith, chief executive of the Real Estate Authority (REA). Finding out about a property’s insurability starts with talking to different insurance companies to get quotes. Consider meeting with an insurance broker – an independent insurance expert who doesn’t work for any particular insurance company. If you haven’t owned a property before but you have contents insurance, contact the company that this insurance is with. Having an existing relationship with an insurer can help show others that you’re a good risk. An insurer will want to know details about the property, like its address, age, condition and what materials it’s made from. “If there’s a licensed real estate agent selling the property, they can help you with this information. You can also ask if the property is currently insured and whether there have been any incidents at the property that could affect its chances of being reinsured in the future,” Lampen-Smith says. Ask whether the property has been subject to an Earthquake Commission (EQC) claim. If it has, request more information and seek legal advice. Be aware that insurance companies are reassessing how they cover coastal or cliff-top properties due to the increasing risk of environmental damage. “As the risk changes, the cost of premiums may increase, exclusions may be added, or insurance cover may be withdrawn for some properties,” he says.

The most common type of insurance cover is sum insured – you decide how much cover you want, based on what it would cost to completely rebuild the property. “It’s important to get this number right,” Lampen-Smith explains. “Set it too high and you could be paying for insurance you don’t need, but set it too low and the payout may not be enough to rebuild the home.” While earthquake damage is covered by EQC, in order to qualify for it you must have valid private home and/or contents insurance that includes fire insurance.

If you’re looking at an apartment, this insurance will usually be included in the annual body corporate fee. “Check this carefully before you make the offer.” If you cannot find a company willing to insure a property you’re interested in, it may be safer to walk away. “If you do find a place that an insurer is happy to cover, make sure you read and understand the policy. Don’t leave any insurance matters to the last minute or fail to read the fine print,” Lampen-Smith warns. If the insurer agrees to cover the

property, and your offer is accepted, let your lender know immediately. You will need the insurance to start on settlement day when the property officially becomes yours, even if you aren’t moving in that day.

Fundraiser on wheels

his Sunday all across the country branches of the Vintage Car Club are staging a variety of events which will see hundreds of vehicles on the road or on display at the same time, to raise funds to support the Cancer Society. Health Promoter Mandy Casey says the collaboration between the Cancer Society and the Vintage Car Club is wonderful. Ashburton Vintage Car Club President Trevor Begg agrees and goes on to say he is pleased this nationwide project which was launched last year is being repeated. Locally the Vintage Car Club is staging a Show and Show at their Clubrooms on Maronan Road. Anyone who would like to come along in their pride and joy, any make, any model any type is more than welcome to take part. The more the merrier! There is a fee of $10 per car to enter the Show and Shine and spectators are asked to make a gold coin donation to view the vehicles. All proceeds will go to the Cancer Society. Mandy Casey is fascinated to hear about the variety of vehicles expected to take part. The show starts at noon, a food stall will be operating. Bond’s DB5 revisited T

he iconic Aston Martin DB5 is back, thanks to a unique collaboration between Aston Martin and EON Productions, the company that produces the James Bond films. Following the successful DB4 G.T. continuation project, a series of 25 Goldfinger DB5 continuation editions, will be created for customers by Aston Martin Works and EON Productions. The Goldfinger DB5 continuation will be based on James Bond’s legendary car from 1964 and built by Aston Martin Works at Newport Pagnell – the original home of the DB5. They will be authentic reproductions of the DB5 seen on screen, with some sympathetic modifications to ensure the highest levels of build quality and reliability. This authenticity will extend to include functioning gadgets such as revolving number plates and more, which were made famous in Goldfinger. The gadgets will be co-developed with Oscar®-winner Chris Corbould, special effects supervisor from the James Bond films. Officially sanctioned by Aston Martin and EON Productions, all the Goldfinger edition cars will be produced to one specification – Silver Birch paint – just like the original. The most instantly recognisable car of all-time, the DB5 made its first appearance in the third James Bond movie, Goldfinger, alongside Sean Connery as James Bond. Laden with gadgets and armaments installed by Q Branch, the secret agent’s Aston Martin became an instant hit with moviegoers. Since its seminal appearance in Goldfinger the DB5 has featured in a further six James Bond movies: Thunderball (1965), again with Connery; GoldenEye (1995) and Tomorrow Never

Dies (1997) with Pierce Brosnan and three appearances alongside Daniel Craig in Casino Royale (2006), Skyfall (2012) and Spectre (2015). James Bond and his DB5 have become two icons of popular culture and one of the most successful and enduring movie partnerships of all-time. Such was its popularity, the DB5’s movie debut even spawned a Corgi die-cast model, an astonishing 2.5m of which were sold in its first year of production (1965). No wonder an entire generation of children grew-up aspiring to own an Aston Martin. Now, thanks to the remarkable Goldfinger DB5 continuation project, a fortunate 25 of them can now own a faithful and authentic tribute to that original car. A further three cars will be built – one each for EON and Aston Martin, plus another to be auctioned for charity. Going coast to coast

he drive across the USA, from sea to shining sea, is one of the must do trips on many a driver’s bucket list. Whichever roads you choose, this trans-continental odyssey is sure to captivate you as it has for countless other travelers, writers and artists over the years. Throw in an element of competition and timing, along with an exquisite vintage Bentley motor car and, what you end up with, could be argued to be the journey of a lifetime. The third edition of the Endurance Rally Associations’ classic American road trip was acclaimed by some as the best yet and, along with another 32 crews, Bill and Julie Holroyd, in a William Medcalf prepared 1927 Bentley 4 ½, took up the challenge. Their route to the chequered flag was a typically tough one and it led them from the charming southern city of Charleston, on the hot and humid South Carolina coast, all the way to Seattle in the cold, clear Pacific Northwest. Covering an impressive 8000km over 22 days, the rally saw everything that only such an epic road trip could produce. Temperatures in the Deep South approached a fuel boiling 40°c, a tropical storm, Alberta, soaked everything and everybody to the bone, the 4302m altitude and thin air of the legendary Pikes Peak tested the fuel/air mixtures and the brakes and steering in equal measure. Bill himself admitted that the rally was very demanding. “One day was 750km long and I felt like I had undergone a full-body workout each day. “Thankfully, the car was faultless for the entire trip which is a credit to William and the team. “Credit must also go to my absolute rookie navigator who started the rally telling me to slow down for every corner but by the end of the trip was exhorting me to drive like a madman!”

E-Type Made good as new P

eople dream of escaping the rat race, but turning a dream into reality can be harder than it sounds. Late in 2016, father and son team Dominic and Marcus Holland managed it, quitting respective jobs in IT and digital marketing in the City of London to acquire a classic car restoration business, E-Type UK Ltd, in Kent. “We were opposite ends of the career timeline,” explained Dominic. “I was coming to the end of a job in the City, working in IT and Marcus was making his way in digital marketing in the City as well. “Over time, you become conscious of the fact that time itself is a scarce resource.” “We both loved cars and thought we’d do something we were passionate about rather than being a cog in a big corporate wheel, which had been my life so far and was going to be his.” At first, neither of the two men knew where to start but dismissed the initial idea of setting up shop in a shed and inspired by other businesses they had seen, started looking for a going concern to buy. E-Type UK Ltd appeared advertised simply as a “classic car business for sale”. A visit revealed a well-established firm with a large customer base that the pair both fell in love with, but also felt was ripe for development. “There was no stock, a small restoration team with only one full-time employee and four part-time, so there was plenty to do,” said Dominic. It was a substantial challenge, not least because neither of the two men came from an automotive or restoration background – but what they did have was considerable experience in customer relations.

They could not have picked a trickier subject, since the E-Type was highly sophisticated for its day, with fully independent suspension and exotic, aircraft-like construction. Three series of E-Type were built between 1961 and 1975. The first was powered first by a 3.8-litre, six-cylinder engine which was later replaced by a more driveable 4.2-litre version. A slightly more practical, if uncomfortably styled, 2+2 also joined the family, while the final Series 3 E-Type was powered by a 5.3-litre V12 engine. One of the challenges all restorers of classic cars face is managing expectations but, said Dominic, “we have always had the desire to do whatever it takes to get people what they want”. It’s a useful mindset, because however good the condition, classic cars are notoriously fickle in their ways and, by modern standards, not big on reliability. “Customers new to classics are sometimes unprepared for what goes with classic car ownership,” said Marcus. “As people have become accustomed to modern cars that are completely reliable, we sometimes have to explain that a component designed in the 1960s is still just that.” The workshop staff now total 11, the longest serving of whom has been with the business for eight years. The team now undertakes everything from maintenance to full-blown, nut and bolt restorations. “We try to understand what a customer wants to achieve and then deliver a car that meets their expectations,” said Marcus. For instance, an immaculate, show-winning “concours” car rebuilt to the original factory specification is not necessarily

ideal for driving to the south of France and in that case, added Marcus, “you would probably want a hybrid, something built to a very high standard but with some upgrades”. While purists might cringe at the thought of any modifications to an E-Type Jaguar, improvements can be desirable, such as upgraded front disc brakes to replace originals, which were no match for the Jaguar’s performance. Even in 1961, the top speed of a 3.8-litre E-Type was quoted by the factory at 150mph and acceleration from standstill to 60mph was a whisker over seven seconds. Other modifications include fuel-injection for Series 3 5.3-litre V12 engines originally fitted with four carburettors which could be unpredictable when hot. Stainless steel exhaust systems resist corrosion indefinitely and enhance the unmistakable E-Type sound. The E-Type’s world debut took place at the Geneva motor show in 1961 after the display car was driven flat-out from Coventry to Switzerland by Jaguar’s renowned test driver Norman Dewis, famously arriving only 20 minutes before the reveal was due to take place. Such stories are the stuff of legend and because of that, together with the E-Type’s beauty and character, their value has soared. Ten years ago it was possible to by a useable 4.2-litre Coupé for about £15,000 ($28,000). Now, a fully restored example from E-Type UK will cost about £200,000 ($385,000). That said, as far as classic car investments go, this one is gold plated. “Some customers simply ask for a driveable car,” said E-Type UK managing

director Marcus Holland – and the company’s own Series 3 V12 E-Type is a perfect example of that. It has been meticulously restored from scratch, with upgrades including AP Racing disc brakes, fuel-injection and unseen details such as alloy radiators with modern electric fans to keep the big engine cool. Grasping the ignition key brings a kind of anticipation lost to owners of most modern cars, and hairs stand to attention on the back of the neck as the V12 engine bursts into life and settles into a civilised purr. The driver’s seat is high and for tall people it pays to snuggle down a little to look out over the long nose beneath the windscreen frame. The upgraded five-speed gearbox is notchy and direct but the engine is so flexible the E-Type moves away with just a murmur, the accelerator pedal almost untouched. We set off along main roads to a nearby town in blistering summer heat; the ride is compliant and comfortable and long journeys would be no hardship in this beautiful car. The steering is direct, too, while the modern brakes are powerful with a solid feel. Throttle response is instantaneous, the 277bhp engine delivering a healthy punch and an intoxicating soundtrack that has to be worth at least half of the Jaguar’s tall price tag. We negotiate the town with its weekday traffic, but the engine doesn’t miss a beat, then reluctantly return to base, reflecting on the fact that this E-type provides an experience that is easily as good as, if not better than, a totally original Series 3 car.

Brabus lights up the G N

ew Mercedes G-Class deliveries have started in some European and American markets, just in time for early customers to start tearing their new SUV apart with help from German-based tuning house Brabus. The Mercedes specialists have just launched a ‘refinement programme’ for the latest evolution of the off-road 4x4, boasting exclusive Brabus design parts, bigger wheels and, of course, more power for the Mercedes-Benz G 500. Like Brabus’ take on the X-Class ute, the G 500 package features the company’s PowerXtra performance upgrade, boosting the four-litre twin-turbo V8’s output by 58kW and 100Nm of torque. In standard Mercedes trim, the engine produces 310kW and 610Nm. But thanks to the Brabus performance kit – a plug-and-play control module replacement – the new Brabustuned G 500 performance is increased to 368kW (500 hp) at 5600 rpm and peak torque of 710Nm constantly between 2250 and 4250 rpm. The increase in oomph is thanks to increased boost pressure and new mapping for injection and ignition, with the new tune tested in the lab and onand off-road. The Brabus G 500 sprints from rest to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds (0.2 faster than stock) and the top speed remains electronically limited to 210 km/h. The engine note is also upgraded with a specially developed stainless sport exhaust system with two chrome tailpipes exiting on each side of the SUV. Brabus say the new pipes offers an optimal mix of sound, performance and longevity. There’s also a Coming Home mode that closes active flaps in the exhaust, keeping

your neighbours happy if you’re an early riser. In the body department, Brabus fit a new front fascia attachment to give the production bumper a more striking profile and reduce front-axle lift at high speeds. The facelift also includes a new tailor-made radiator grille

that lights up in blue when the driver unlocks the car. The new G-Class also features auxiliary headlamps above the windshield. This naked-carbon module on the roof, available with a high-gloss or matte surface finish, is fitted with two powerful lights that act as flashers or, using the high beams, two sets of high-performance LEDs each for off-roading at night. At the back, a roof-mounted wing (or airfoil as Brabus calls it) ensures this G-

A hood scoop made from carbon fibers is also added, which not only lends the GClass an even more characteristic profile, but also optimises the exchange of cool and hot air in the engine bay. Sneak preview of the new Corolla

riving through Auckland’s Great North Road as it morphs into K Road is good fun for petrol-heads young and old alike. The smorgasbord of new car dealerships is a sight to behold, and on more than a few occasions it’s been the scene of a great four-wheeled ‘first sighting’. I expected to see one new car along the busy stretch – that car being the Tesla Model 3. What I didn’t expect was to also spot the new Toyota Corolla. We’ve been giving the new Corolla plenty of props of late, given its integral role in Toyota’s larger overarching plan of making the brand and its products less of a bore. So having spotted two proudly on display at Auckland City Toyota, curiosity led to a brief visit. One thing led to another, and we were handed the keys to the top-of-the-range Corolla ZR for the morning. The ZR comes loaded with plenty of tech and trim changes. It sports a deeper bodykit and 18-inch wheels on the outside, and heads-up display, a JBL sound system, and ultra comfy heated suede sports seats on the inside. That’s on top of a heap of standard

kit that includes an 8.0-inch infotainment system as well as a stack of safety kit. That safety tech deserves a bit of attention because it’s really quite impressive. Adaptive cruise control that slows the car all the way to 0km/h, lane-tracing assist, vehicle sway warning, autonomous emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and automatic high beam are all standard across the range. Engines? Well, the SX and ZR models share the same naturally aspirated 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 125kW and 200Nm to its name. Humble figures on first reading, but that’s 21 per cent more power and 15 per cent more torque than the outgoing 1.8-litre. All from a more compact unit, despite the additional 200cc of capacity. There’s also a Hybrid variant, which comes equipped with a 72kW 1.8-litre petrol engine paired with a supporting hybrid system. But most people considering a Corolla

probably place the engine changes or safety changes second or third on the totem pole of importance, at best. The big story here is how the Corolla looks, inside and out. Interior-wise things are bolted well together, much like the last Corolla’s interior. The difference is that material quality has improved across the board. Soft touch materials don’t just adorn major touch points, but they also find home all over the

dashboard and door cards. The supporting design is also of the more mature variety, with contrast stitching in this ZR model complimenting a few well-weighted licks of silver accenting. And the exterior styling? Well, a shrinking violet the new Corolla certainly is not – particularly in ZR trim. You’ll like it or loath it, much like a lot of the Japanese brand’s other current designs. But we tend to think that it’s one of the most ambitiously styled Corollas since the ‘90s. Sharp edges and defined character lines make it something that not only stands out in its own segment, but also stands on its own two legs. The leering headlights wrap around the nose while feeding into the gaping honeycomb grill, and out back the boot-lid looks like an unfolded piece of origami paper. The new Corolla will launch next month. Pricing is also still to be confirmed, although it’s expected that this range topping ZR will slot in at a similar price as its predecessor in the high $30k-bracket.

500g Quality Mark lean beef mince 1 onion, finely chopped 1 clove garlic, crushed 2T tomato paste 400g can chopped tomatoes in juice 1C Campbell’s Real Stock –Beef 1t sugar 1 punnet cherry tomatoes, halved (optional) Mozzarella parcels 1 packet wonton or dumpling wrappers 200g mozzarella 1 bunch fresh basil 1 egg, lightly beaten To serve Fresh basil or parsley Freshly grated parmesan

mince and break it up quickly with a wooden spoon. Stir it for a few minutes until brown all over. Transfer to a bowl, cool slightly then drain off and discard fat. ■ Wipe out the mince pan and turn the heat down to medium. Add another tablespoon of oil, the onion and garlic. Stir for 5 minutes until soft and translucent. Add the tomato paste, tinned tomatoes, stock and sugar. Simmer for 15-20 minutes or until it becomes a pasta sauce consistency. Season to taste. Add the cherry tomatoes (if using) and

simmer for another few minutes. ■ Mozzarella parcels: Slice the mozzarella into 2-3cm pieces. Brush a wonton wrapper with egg, and place a slice of cheese and a basil leaf in the middle. Season with salt and pepper and roll it up. Press the ends firmly with your fingers to seal. Repeat with the remaining filling. You can cut the ends off if you have lots of excess pastry sticking out. ■ Bring a large saucepan of water with a pinch of salt to a rapid boil. Add the parcels and cook for 5 minutes (or 3 minutes if using homemade pasta). ■ To serve: Combine the mozzarella parcels with the mince and spoon into warmed bowls. nd we thought we had some political problems … The tune of Advance Australia Fair has a very muted tone to it at the moment as that country battens down the hatches for what could well be one of its biggest political situations in many, many years. Despite his announcement yesterday that he would fight for his right to remain the Prime Minister of our closest neighbours, it appears Malcolm Turnbull might as well pack up his boomerang and hit the highway right back to wherever it is he first hailed from. There is an element of Turnbull that is quite likeable, but then again – how much can you really like a politician? It was an intriguing day to

watch unfold from the comfort of little old Aotearoa yesterday and the next 24 hours should be just as entertaining – but it does give a lot of credence to the fact that, although we might bemoan our own government regularly, things haven’t got this bad for a while. At the centre of all of the debacle is a man called Peter Dutton. Many will have never heard of him, but to paint a picture he’s a lot like the Prime Minister of another country in that he’s a

fan of the outlandish statement and prefers to use the social media site Twitter to ply his trade in poking the bear and promoting his own beliefs. There is no hiding from the fact that he is quite disliked by many of his fellow countrymen – so much in fact that many have called for his head to roll over his various involvements in government-funded corporations and even his citizenship. His involvement has Kiwis living in Australia worried as he’s made no attempt to hide the fact that he’s not that fond of internationals living in his homeland and would quite happily send them packing. So, it’s nervous times across the board. Just not in the land of the free. Today will be a huge day in

Australia’s history. Turnbull is ready to fight – but if he sees the evidence that he’s lost the confidence that saw him assume the role of Prime Minister he’ll step aside which will likely see a snap election take place with current treasurer, Scott Morrison squaring off with Dutton. And then, by this time tomorrow, Australia could be looking at a new leader – potentially one that it would seem a majority of the country aren’t the biggest fans of and a man who one day pledges his allegiance to the Prime Minister and then the next day turns around and whacks him in the back of the head with the proverbial didgeridoo, only to benefit personally as he falls to the floor. Interesting times.

Really TV One?

would like to kick off this week’s column with a confession and a question. Confession … I have added Country Calendar to our MySky list. Question … Does that mean I have finally grown up? Wait don’t answer that just yet! I have more evidence to back up my case your honour. I found myself scoffing and muttering at a programme trailer over the weekend. You know the type, a 30-second ad for a new TV show that we should all watch. “When one’s husband is a multi-millionaire, life can be something of a fairy-tale but, when it all comes crashing down, it seems the bigger the money, the bigger the fight. Don’t miss Millionaires Ex Wives Club, Tuesday, 8.40pm on One.” I can’t believe good old reliable, sensible and mature TV One has sunk to this low. What a complete load of bollocks! The sad part of it is that this load of twaddle was probably the highest rating show of the night. Why would we want to watch it? To make ourselves feel better about our lives, because these

successful people are going through a messy time. I have just done a bit of research to make sure I have the programme plot correct, for a second I worried that it was a fictional series, the type of which TV One has been known for in the past. Here’s what one reviewer said: “Millionaires’ Ex-Wives Club manages – just – to err on the side of cautious documentary rather than full voyeuristic freak show as it explores what drives women to pursue outlandish amounts of money through the courts, after their marriages to super-wealthy husbands hit the rocks.” I’m really disappointed with TV One, I would have thought they’d leave this kind of junk telly to TV2 or 3. I guess it’s all about target

demographics and where the age group attracted to these type of shows spend their money. My fear for them is that it may turn more people like me (mature) on to the likes of Netflix, where you can watch a TV series or documentary, minus the ads, for the cost of a couple of coffees a month. I leave an episode of Country Calendar educated, with an insight into what it takes to produce an organic, free-range chicken or a bottle of hemp oil. What do people leave the Millionaires Ex Wives Club with? I very much doubt they leave with positive thoughts that’s for sure. Mind you, I think the same can be said for watching the news at 6pm. When you stop and analyse the stories, 90 per cent are negative, that can’t be good for your state of mind, but I guess good news doesn’t help ratings? If you want to watch some good telly, here are the top three shows Mrs Hoops and I have viewed of late. 3. Safe – An eight episode drama series created by mystery novelist Harlan Coben. It’s a whodunit that

will make you guess and re guess each episode. 2. Designated Survivor – Drama series about a lowerlevel cabinet member, who becomes President of the USA after a devastating attack claims the lives of the president and most of the Cabinet. It stars Kiefer Sutherland, Maggie Q and Natascha McElhone (Californication). 1. Homeland – This is our favourite TV show of all time. It is a must-watch thriller that has won multiple awards including several Emmy and Golden Globe Awards. So, scoffing at and refusing to watch trash like Millionaires Ex Wives Club and adding Country Calendar to MySky, does that mean I am officially grown up or am I just old now? YOUR VIEW Taxi service I am writing to say how disappointed I was in the Ashburton Taxi service on Saturday nightWe were at a family 21st birthday and at the end of the night I rang for a taxi, told the lady the address where we wanted to be picked up and she said there would be one there “as soon as they can”, so we waited what seemed like a lifetime bearing in mind it was about

-4°C, but in reality was only about 20 mins, so I rang to see how long they would be, she then said me nobody would be picking us up from the address as there was $30 bill owing from there. I told her that was unfair on the people at the function who wanted to go home, she was very rude and, to be honest, I was a bit angry with her on the phone because it was so cold and I asked “how are we supposed to get home, its

very cold”, she then said “that’s life honey,” and hung up. So thank you Ashburton Taxis for your fantastic service. Air NZ’s second highest ever profit By Grant Bradley Air New Zealand has announced pre-tax earnings of $540 million, the second highest profit in the airline’s history, and it will pay staff an $1800 bonus. Net profit after tax grew 2.1 per cent to $390m. Staff bonuses of up to $1800 will be paid to all permanent employees who do not participate in a short-term incentive programme.

Chairman Tony Carter said the result demonstrated the airline’s resilience. “This is an impressive financial result, driven by strong revenue growth across the airline’s key markets, as well as continued focus on sustainable cost improvement, despite significantly higher fuel prices.’’

About 8500 staff will be paid the bonus next week. The airline has paid bonuses before. In 2016, when it recorded its best-ever annual result it paid out $20.5m in bonuses. More than 8000 staff enjoyed a $2500 bonus then. And last year when pre-tax earnings dropped to $527m, it handed out a $1700 bonus. This year’s result was in line with analysts’ forecasts. A Bloomberg poll of five analysts forecast a pre-tax profit of between $543m and $571m with an average figure of $553m. Fuel costs contributed another $160 million to costs although this was partly offset by opertating efficiencies of $104 million. During the past year, the airline has battled with disruption to its network caused by the Marsden Pt fuel pipeline rupture, severe storms affecting its domestic operation and international flights and some of its Dreamliners pulled from service at times for repairs. The airline estimates continued costs of schedule changes

will hurt next year’s result by between $30 million and $40 million. This means, based on an average jet fuel price of $US85 ($126) a barrel, underlying earnings would drop to be between $425m and $525m. Operating revenue increased by $376m to $5.5 billion, an increase of 7.4 per cent on the prior year. Passenger revenue increased by $303m to $4.7 billion, a 6.9 per cent increase. Chief executive Christopher Luxon acknowledged the impact of external disruptions on the airline’s operational performance and thanked customers and staff for their loyalty and support. Customers have complained about some leased planes and having their plans disrupted. He acknowledged some service was below par. “These disruptions have resulted in a level of service for some that did not meet the high standards we set for ourselves,’’ Luxon said. To deliver greater schedule reliability for customers, Air New Zealand will be leasing three widebody aircraft, two Boeing 777-200s and one Boeing 777-

The market week in review I

t was a fairly positive week for markets this week. The NZX 50 logged multiple record closing highs, as investors zoned in on reporting season with an abundance of heavyweights reporting. The Australian market also continued to push higher, with the country’s benchmark hitting 10-and-a-half-year highs. While in America, the current bull market is set to become the longest on record, turning 3453 days old on Wednesday. In that time, the S&P 500 has skyrocketed more than 300 per cent. This week saw annual net migration fall to 4720 for the month of July, down from 4840 in June. Despite the fall, the number is still high by historical standards. The decrease was mainly driven by non-NZ citizens leaving the country. Turning to reporting season, market darling The a2 Milk Company said annual profit more than double from last year. Its products are now being sold in 10,000 stores in China and 6000 stores in the US. Net profit jumped 116 per cent to $195.7m, while revenue was up 68 per cent. Looking ahead, the company said it expects further revenue growth in 2019. The company said marketing investment is now expected to be higher than originally expected in order to build its distribution network more quickly and increase brand awareness. The share price jumped 6.1 per cent on the news and is up 45.6 per cent this year. New Zealand’s largest building materials supplier, Fletcher Building, reported a net loss of $190m. The company says it won’t pay a final dividend but expects to resume dividends in 2019, as the

company grapples with problems within the buildings and interiors unit of its construction division. Fletcher is in the middle of an overhaul of its business after facing delays and budget blowouts on several major construction projects. The company has also laid off 90 staff this year as part of a restructuring initiative to save $30m. Honey exporter Comvita announced they have returned to an operating profit despite a second poor honey harvest. Net sales increased 19 per cent, with China outperforming as well as a breakthrough in North America, with sales of $26.8m. The company reported a final dividend of 2 cents per share, bringing the total to 6 cents per share. Comvita commented “the history of honey harvests in New Zealand shows that empirically a third consecutive poor honey season is unlikely”. The company is working to reduce the financial exposure in the event of another poor harvest by selecting hive sites that optimise profitability. Trade Me reported an annual profit rise of 2.3 per cent as revenue rose on higher sales of its premium products. The company announced a special dividend of 22 cents per share, as well as raising its final dividend to 10.5 cents per share. The company expects 5-8 per cent

revenue growth in 2019. National carrier Air New Zealand reported its second highest profit in the company’s history, of $540m. The company is awarding staff bonuses of up to $1800 for all permanent employees. Shareholders will receive a final dividend of 11 cents per share, taking the total ordinary declared dividend for the year to 22 cents per share. Meanwhile, Mercury fell in the wake of its full year result on Tuesday. The company’s operating earnings lifted 7.3 per cent, driven by abnormally wet conditions in the North Island which pushed hydro generation to record levels. The company also announced that it will not be paying a special dividend due to its team up with Infratil to buy rival Tilt Renewables. Mercury now has the lowest dividend yield within the sector. This week we also saw the GlobalDairyTrade index drop 3.6 per cent, down for a sixth consecutive auction. New Zealand key product group, whole milk powder fell 2.1 per cent. The most dramatic moves at the event saw butter fall 8.5 per cent, anhydrous milk fat drop 6.9 per cent, while cheddar declined 4.7 per cent. Rennet casein was the only product on the day to experience a gain, increasing by 2.8 per cent. In the week ahead reporting season starts to unwind. Ole Ole up for the challenge Andrew Forsman has a high opinion of Ole Ole but he’s holding off on his chants of approval ahead of the inaugural Platinum Homes Taranaki Challenge (1400m) at New Plymouth tomorrow. The Cambridge trainer races the stakes-placed Makfi threeyear-old gelding with Auckland breeder Brett Wilkinson and is excited to have a runner in New Zealand’s richest special conditions maiden. But Forsman, who trains in partnership with Murray Baker, doesn’t share the confidence of TAB bookmakers who have installed Ole Ole a $3.50 favourite for the race on the back of his comprehensive last-start maiden win at Woodville. “He’s on the way up and we really only gave him that run to have him ready for this race so he would have taken a lot of improvement from that,” Forsman said. “He scrambled around a bit and didn’t really like the ground. I was impressed with it because it wasn’t the weakest maiden you’d see either. But I’m not going into this race with high hopes. “I just think the track will be too heavy for him especially against some of those older, more experienced ones.” Track conditions at Pukekura Raceway were rated as heavy 11 on Thursday morning and while Ole Ole has now won on a heavy track and run second in the Listed Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Pukekohe on a heavy 10 track, it’s

Trainer Lance O’Sullivan has reported quality stayer Charles Road has come through his firstup effort in the Gr.2 Lisa Chittick Foxbridge Plate (1200m) in good fashion and will now head to Hastings for an open handicap over a mile on September 1. The Gr.2 Chairman’s Quality (2600m) winner finished tenth in the Foxbridge Plate where he made up good ground over the concluding stages. “We were very pleased with him in the Foxbridge Plate,” O’Sullivan, who trains in partnership with Andrew Scott, said. “He is a stayer resuming and I was probably surprised that he finished as close as he did to them. He certainly finished a few lengths closer than what I expected.”

Ole Ole will race in the slot of Sir Patrick and Justine, Lady Hogan, who offered Forsman and Wilkinson a partnership deal when they didn’t have a horse of their own for the race, which is run under sweepstake-type conditions similar to Australia’s The Everest but for horses who were still in maiden grade at the beginning of June. “It’s a good concept and to have a chance in it is exciting.

The horse is in good form anyway and I’m looking forward to it,” said Forsman, who came into the ownership after stable owner Wilkinson approached him about taking a share when Ole Ole was still a yearling. “Brett wasn’t taking him to the yearling sales and he asked me to come and have a look at him and it’s worked out that I’m racing half with him. It’s worked out well. We’ve had a lot of fun so far.”

He should be right there in the running to have a shot at them, so we’d like to think he’ll go close.” The Big Opal has won seven of his 15 steeplechase starts but failed in the Grand National Steeples (5600m) at Riccarton.

The Pakuranga Hunt meeting tomorrow, set to be held at Te Rapa, will now be run at Te Aroha. New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing has cited heavy rain and prevailing track conditions for the change in venue. The transfer has also resulted in the change in a number of race distances. All hurdle races will now be run over 3100m, the Maiden Chase will be run over 3500m (reduced from 3900m), while the Bridges Insurance Pakuranga Hunt Cup will now be run over 5200m (increased from 4800m). The meeting is historically held at Ellerslie.

Waller seeking rain Leading Sydney trainer Chris Waller is hopeful he can get New Zealand-bred gelding Liapari back to his winning ways in the Premier’s Cup (1900m) at Rosehill tomorrow. The Nom du Jeu six-year-old won the Listed Civic Stakes (1350m) three starts ago, but has been unplaced in his subsequent two starts. “He’s done a pretty good job this prep, winning a Listed race,” Waller said. “I think he’ll appreciate stepping up to the 1900m, albeit right at the edge of his distance range. “There is some talk that we might get a bit of rain on the weekend, that will play to his benefit and he’s got a good draw.” Liapari was formerly trained in New Zealand by Karen Zimmerman and won one of his nine starts in his homeland before transferring to Waller.

ABs keep iron pack By GreGor Paul To no one’s surprise, after all eight players left Sydney with a clean bill of health, the All Blacks have selected the same pack to start at Eden Park as they did in the Bledisloe opener. No surprise because the All Blacks destroyed the Wallabies at set piece. It wasn’t annihilation but it was close: a definite victory by knockout rather than a points decision. The Wallabies didn’t ever really enter the scrummaging battle, preferring instead to mostly drop before the engagement rather than endure the humiliation of being physically buckled for all to see. They didn’t shy away at the lineout, though, but were instead out-thought by a unit that was tactically smarter and athletically more able. The insult added to injury was the lack of influence either David Pocock or Michael Hooper were able to have at the tackled ball. Neither managed to pilfer much – nothing memorable or momentous anyway – and if anything, the All Blacks looked more capable on the floor through Sam Cane, Kieran Read and of course Brodie Retallick. If the All Blacks backs had attacked better off scrum and lineout it would have been easier to appreciate the dominance of the forwards. Mostly, but not always by any means, they win the battle of the gainline and collectively they have 526 caps which is only 10 behind the pack that started the 2015 World Cup final. If and when Dane Coles returns, the All Blacks will be regularly picking in 2018 the same tight five that started that World Cup final in 2015, with Read having also been at No8 in that game with Cane coming off the bench. As a rugby coach, Sean Carter is determined to get the best out of his players both on the field and off. He has a passion for both the game and for developing young players and as he prepares for his first Heartland Championship as head coach of Mid Canterbury, Carter is excited by the players he and assistant coaches Jason Rickard and Dale Palmer have pulled together to form the region’s 2018 team and what they could produce in this year’s competition. Mid Canterbury will kick off their Heartland Championship campaign against HorowhenuaKapiti in Foxton on Saturday afternoon, with an end goal of a top four finish and a spot in the Meads Cup finals in their sights. But they aren’t getting too far ahead of themselves. Carter said it was important not to set expectations that were too far-reaching, so they’ll be taking it one step at a time. Carter came to the Mid Canterbury coaching role off a couple of years assisting with the Rakaia side, after making a bit of a comeback to coaching following a few years off while his kids were young. An openside flanker in his playing days, Carter played for Marist in the Christchurch club rugby competition’s hey-day when there were 18 or 19 teams vying for top honours and also represented Ellesmere and the New Zealand Police. Carter joined the police when he was 19 and spent 21 years as a police officer, including 16 years as a dog handler, but today he is a financial insurance loss adjuster who lives at West Melton. It was West Melton where he first caught the coaching bug. Carter was one of those who took on the job of trying to help the West Melton Rugby Club get a senior team back out on to the park, to give the club more of an identity and give young players something to aspire to. They brought in a coach who asked Carter if he’d give him a hand and from there he also got into JAB representative coaching with both Ellesmere and Canterbury Country. It was through his son Tom Hanham-Carter, who went to school with the son of Mark Boag from the Rakaia Rugby Club, that he first became involved with the Rakaia club and Mid Canterbury Rugby. He’s spent the past couple of years helping coach the club’s seniors, while Tom has also become an influential part of their backline and would also take to the field at centre in today’s opening Heartland clash for Mid Canterbury. As a coach, Carter is a firm believer that nothing that happened on a rugby field was necessarily wrong, it was more about how a player recovered and learned from what they did and what they’d do the next time. He wants to instil confidence

Blow for All White All Whites midfielder Ryan Thomas has suffered a massive setback after joining Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven. The 23-year-old is set to miss most of the season after suffering a knee injury at training. Thomas has told the PSV website he suffered the injury when he blocked the ball at training and after having scans it doesn’t look good. “It is not fun, but this also belongs to the life of a top athlete. In the coming days we will look at what the best plan is and then I will get to work,” he said.

Steve Smith stars Steve Smith has given national selectors a reminder of the immense talent they’ll be unable to call upon this summer, earning man-of-the-match honours in his most polished performance as a banned batsman. Smith lifted the Barbados Tridents to a two-run victory over the Jamaica Tallawahs in Florida on Thursday, when he starred with bat and ball in the Caribbean Premier League. Australia’s sacked skipper topscored for Barbados with 63 from 44 balls, helping them recover from 3-39 to finish 6-156. ven. Mid Canterbury had to play most of the game with 14 men due to a red card to Maleli Sau in the opening minutes. This year, a top four finish to the round robin and a spot in the Meads Cup is the ultimate goal, but this weekend they have just one thing in mind and that is starting their 2018 campaign with a win. If they could do that in Foxton against Horowhenua-Kapiti tomorrow, that would set them well and truly on the right path, Carter said.

Referee Nigel Owens has revealed that the homophobic abuse he suffered while officiating an England international at Twickenham in 2014 almost forced him into an early retirement. The Welshman, speaking ahead of this weekend’s Pride event in Cardiff, also revealed that the intervention of a handwritten letter from Rugby Football Union chairman Bill Beaumont was the reason he decided against hanging up his whistle. Two supporters were banned from Twickenham for two years and fined after an investigation into their actions during England’s match against New Zealand in 2014. Owens considered quitting after that game, but Beaumont managed to convince him to continue. He said the letter gave him strength and Beaumont said the RFU was doing everything it could to deal with the issue and that there was no place for it sport. - NZME

If social media interest is anything to go by, the Ashburton Squash Club could be set for an invasion of women on Sunday. The club is hosting a Ladies’ Squash Fitness Day on Sunday, aimed at showcasing squash to potential newcomers as both a sport and a way to keep fit. Ashburton Squash Club social media and new membership coordinator Julie Smith said a Facebook page set up for the event had prompted around 70 people to say they were interested in the event. If 70 people turned up, the club would be absolutely blown away;

they’d have been happy with 40 or 50. Smith was a tennis player years ago, but then a friend introduced her to squash, and while she loved the sport she also loved the workout it provided. “It’s just so great for fitness and there is quite a few new ladies getting into this this year and we wanted to emphasise the fitness side of it and have an open afternoon with a few different things going on,” Smith said. They’ll take the women through everything from warming up and stretching, to having a go themselves, before giving them the opportunity to sit back with a glass of wine and some

refreshments while watching a couple of top players battle it out on court. Top local woman Katrina Palmer will hit the court to play an exhibition match against one of the club’s top men, Sam Shearer. It is all about introducing potential newcomers – particularly women and juniors – to the sport, and something squash clubs around New Zealand are trying to do. The Methven Squash Club held a similar day recently. “We’ve got so many clubs with so many good facilities. It’s just been awesome this year, the tournaments have all been filling up before the closing days. Three years ago you’d be ringing

around a few days before trying to get as many people as you could,” Smith said. She said everywhere you went, there were squash courts. The Ashburton club had four and Smith said when she was in the air force, every base she went to had squash courts. No gear is required on Sunday – rackets and balls will be supplied. All the women needed to do was show up in gym gear ready to give it a go, and bring a plate for everyone to share while they watched the exhibition match. The women’s squash fitness day at the Ashburton Squash Club on Harrison Street will start at 2pm on Sunday.

Folau leaving Mystics for Sydney Silver Ferns shooter Maria Folau has called time on her career with the Northern Mystics after nine years with the team and has been granted an exemption to still play for New Zealand. Folau announced ysterday that she is making a full time move to Sydney, where her husband Israel Folau is based with the Waratahs Super Rugby side. The Netball New Zealand Board granted Folau a 12-month exemption, deeming her eligible to play for the Silver Ferns in 2019 despite no longer being contracted to a New Zealand ANZ Premiership team. Folau made her debut with the Northern Mystics in 2010 and has remained a mainstay of the franchise for the past nine seasons. “This has been one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make, I consider the Northern Mystics my netball family and this club will always hold a special place in my heart, but I feel the time is right for me to make a full time move to my new home in Sydney,” she said. “My life and my family are now based outside of New Zealand, so my support networks have also shifted across the Tasman”. Folau has played 128 tests for New Zealand since making her debut in 2007 and was last week named in the Silver Ferns squad to play in next month’s Quad Series. NNZ board chair Allison Ferguson said Folau’s long and dedicated career as a Silver Fern, her personal circumstances, and her loyalty to the game here led to the exemption being granted. “She has shown an unquestionable loyalty to netball in New Zealand including both the Silver Ferns and Mystics,” Ferguson said. “It has been a tough season for Maria this year, now that she and her family live in Australia, travelling between the two countries to continue playing the game she has dedicated much of her life to. “Maria’s experience is really

Eliza still hoping to vault this season Eliza McCartney’s hopes of getting back over the pole vault bar again this season are still alive. However the clock is ticking for the world class vaulter. She picked up a heel injury in the Diamond League meeting in Birmingham last weekend. She is aiming to be back in time to contest the DL final in Zurich on August 30, and the seasonending Continental Cup teams event in the Czech Republic on September 9. McCartney suffered bruising to the fat pad of her left heel when she landed awkwardly on her second attempt in Birmingham, and immediately withdrew from the event and had ice applied to the foot. The Rio Olympic bronze medallist has returned from London, where she sought medical advice, to her base in Leverkusen, Germany. She is about to start light training, in a bid to keep alive her DL final ambitions. It is mending, but as it’s an injury McCartney has never had before, there is no anecdotal evidence to work with. McCartney has set three personal best heights this year, and is now up to 4.94m, just the third woman to reach that mark outdoors. Only multiple world and Olympic champion Yelena Isinbayeva (six times) and American Sandi Morris (once) have gone over 5m. McCartney had been hoping to end her best season on a high and challenge Morris for the DL crown. The top 12-ranked athletes compete in Zurich, all previous points accrued during the season are scrubbed and the winner takes all. - NZME

Mickelson joined Twitter yesterday and shared the annoucement of the clash which will take place in November. According to reports they will play for $NZ13.4m. Golf.com reported last month that Woods and Mickelson, who have combined for 19 majors, 122 victories on the PGA Tour and 90 years on earth, were on the verge of agreeing to the winner-take-all match. Back-to-back missions The Ashburton College/Mt Hutt College girls’ rugby team will get a chance to defend its Aoraki title after convincingly seeing off a challenge from Timaru Girls’ High School in Wednesday’s semifinal. Given a home semifinal in the Aoraki Secondary Schools’ girls’ rugby competition for the first time, Ash/Hutt took to the field at

They did just that, running away with the game 69-24 to secure themselves a spot in next week’s final against Timaru’s Craighead, after the season’s other top contenders downed Timaru’s Roncalli

Ash/Hutt’s semifinal opposition on Wednesday was the school that they beat in last year’s final, Timaru Girls’ High School. Ash/Hutt won last season’s final 64-40 to cap off a stellar season

and they are hopeful of defending that title and adding another to their names next week. Ash/Hutt had a strong recent history in the competition. They were unbeaten in the 2017 competition, lost just one game in the 2016 competition, and were unbeaten in the 2015 competition.
