Fundraiser takes on a riot of colour By Katie todd

Lake Hood is once again set to transform into a rainbow, runners’ wonderland this Sunday, as hundreds tackle Ashburton’s second annual Colour Run. Runners and walkers will make their way around a five kilometre circuit, passing through 10 gates where sponsors will douse them in brightly coloured powders. The event is organised as a fundraiser for CanInspire Charitable Trust, which offers jewellery-making classes to local cancer patients and other individuals experiencing illness, trauma or personal loss. As this year’s event rolls around, organisers urge that it’s not about how fast you can run, it’s how colourful you become that matters. Event Co-ordinator Liz Wells said the event will leave a trail of bright colours and even brighter grins in its wake. With great weather forecast for Sunday and some tickets still available, she encourages everyone to buy up. “We do have a limited number of tickets and once they are gone they are gone,” she said. “We’d love to see as many people jump on board and support CanInspire Charitable Trust to be able to keep doing the great work in our

A local teacher identified as one of the most innovative teachers in the world winged her way to Singapore last week after being selected for the Microsoft Educators Exhange (E2) conference. Junior School Deputy Principal Sue Furndorfler became the second ever Methven Primary School teacher to attend the prestigious event last week. The E2 is an annual event bringing together the most innovative educators and leaders from around the world for the opportunity to collaborate, create and share experiences on

how to integrate technology and education to advance learning. Furndorfler said she was one of 320 different Microsoft Innovator Experts (MIE) selected from around the world to take part in the three-day event, including 11 other primary and secondary teachers from New Zealand. She was selected after submitting an application last year, showing her working with digital resources at Methven Primary School, which itself is a Microsoft Showcase School. The trip was fully paid for by Microsoft. “It’s a really cool conference

and I met a lot of people from around the world,” she said. “We had to work on a project in a collaborative group and I was with someone from Greece, someone from Guatemala and someone from India. So someone had a translator and there was a bit of pidgin English going on but we worked it out.” A number of speakers also addressed crowds during the threeday conference. Furndorfler said she is returning to the classroom schooled up in “computational thinking” and ways to integrate technology into the classroom – from 3D Microsoft Paint, to Minecraft to

Micro-bits as a means of teaching coding. This year, Microsoft selected Singapore as a venue because of its highly regarded education system, identified as the world’s best education system, in an OECD-led study. Last year the event was held in Toronto, and Methven Primary School’s Keryn Hooker was selected to go. Principal Chris Murphy said it was great to have not one but two teachers attend the conference in consecutive years and mingle with the who’s who of education. “It’s a real accolade,” he said.

Fight over council cash for tourism From P1 Wilson, long a critic of council funds supporting the organisation, said that what Ashburton gave compared to the amount Timaru gave to promote its district was way out of kilter. Timaru’s grant was just $100,000, he said. He believes tourism promotion should be funded largely by tourism operators, not local authorities. A review of Experience Mid Canterbury by consultant Peter Winder recommended the organisation play a greater role in supporting local events that brought people into the district. There was no indication in the SOI that this was a focus, Russell Ellis said. Wilson wanted the statement of intent scrapped and Experience Mid Canterbury sent back to the drawing board to produce something that better showed where its money was being spent. He wanted the organisation put on notice that if it didn’t come back with a better document their funding would be in doubt. Like it or not, councillors had no option but to accept the SOI, said business support manager Paul Brake. “Legally they’re required to give you a draft SOI and they’ve done this. You can go back and say you don’t like it, review it change it, but you can’t not adopt it,” he said. When it came to a vote, Wilson found a supporter in Peter Reveley who said councillors had to be aware that funding for Experience Mid Canterbury was built into its longterm plan and if there were no guidelines in the SOI it might find itself forced to honour a funding commitment it might not want.

As hunting season looms and the great Mid Canterbury outdoors beckons, local hunters are being urged to put safety first. Emergency Services say they observe a spike in hunting-related incidents and Search and Rescue operations each autumn, with target misidentification being the biggest cause of fatalities. This year police say it is important that hunters remember to keep themselves and others safe. New Zealand Police Acting Superintendent Mike McIlraith said the responsibility is always on the shooter to positively identify their target, as “the consequences of failing to fully identify a target beyond all doubt are immediate, tragic and catastrophic”.

Mountain Safety Council Chief Executive Officer Mike Daisley said “there is a general perception that the misidentified target incidents are across a valley, several hundred metres away, when in actuality they aren’t.” The Mountain Safety Council’s insights into hunting season indicate that 92 per cent of misidentified target incidents occur when the individuals involved are less than 75 metres apart. McIlraith said anyone who is planning to use a firearm is required to have a valid firearms licence and comply with the New Zealand Arms Code. “If you do not have a licence you must be with someone who does – and they in turn must supervise the unlicensed person closely.” Police also stressed the importance of taking care in the outdoors by “watching

your footing, knowing your limits, and looking out for each other”. They urged hunters to always plan their trip, tell someone their plans, and take sufficient supplies including a personal locator beacon. Outdoor and hunting safety information can be found on the Mountain Safety Council website, and hunters at all levels of experience are encouraged to have a look. Within the Mid-South Canterbury area, the Department of Conservation advise that there are 23 hunting blocks available with a wide range of hunting options. Species hunted include deer, tahr, chamois, goats, pigs and wallaby, and popular spots include Black Hill Range and Mt Hutt, Clyde and Lawrence, and Big Hill and Clearwater in the Hakatere Conservation Park.

Pre-purchased burial plots can’t be treated as an investment, but they could be the cheapest piece of real estate you’ll ever buy, says Ashburton District Council open spaces manager David Askin. As he looks towards developing a new section of the Ashburton cemetery, Askin said there is less than two years’ capacity left in the current cemetery and that makes the new development urgent. “We can’t just sit back on this,” he said. There are an average of 70 burials a year at the cemetery and there are just 160 known plots left. That does not, however, take into account plots that have been pre-purchased or plots that are extra depth to allow a second burial. The council last week received a resource consent for the new development and Askin is keen to see final plans drawn up and for the work to begin. Unlike some other local authorities, the council does not have a time limit on its pre-purchased plots. Some councils require these to be sold back to the council after 60 or 80 years if they have not been used, but Ashburton has allowed unused plots to remain vacant. “We do have quite a lot of pre-purchased plots and there are probably some out there that are very old. We should probably look at doing a stocktake of some kind in the future,” he said. The council received the odd request for a plot to be transferred to a new owner or occasionally for it to be resold. “If they want to sell, we’ll purchase them back but we’ll only pay what they paid originally. They’re not an investment, however, if you do buy a plot and 20 years down the track you need it for a burial, then it will always be a cheap piece of real estate,” he said. Currently a plot in the Ashburton, Methven or Rakaia cemetery comes with a $1325 price tag. The cemetery extension will see new burial grounds created at the eastern end of the existing cemetery. This area will be developed in two stages with the first including a range of options including traditional burial, cremation berms and a natural burial area. As long as there are vacant sites in the existing cemetery there will be the option of purchasing a plot in either section, Askin said. Planning for the cemetery extension began in 2012 and he anticipates the extension will be in use next year.

A dream that’s inspired thousands BY SUE NEWMAN

Today the Mount Somers Track attracts walkers from around the world to enjoy a slice of Mid Canterbury’s back country, but 35 years ago, that track was just one man’s dream. Where others saw farmland, forest and tussock-covered slopes, David Howden saw an opportunity, one that would galvanise teams of outdoor enthusiasts who worked to create a track through the untouched landscape, a track that would be walked by thousands. The first stage of what is now known as the Mount Somers Track was well used by locals. They walked from the Ashburton Gorge Road into what was then the Mt Somers Hut, a musterers’ hut that could accommodate only a handful of visitors. It was basic, at best. The area was well known to Howden, a local farmer who was also involved with a number of outdoor recreation groups. In 1982 he took a number of international agriculture students into the area where they stayed overnight at the Mt Somers Hut. “The next day was a brilliant day and I decided instead of going out by 4WD we’d walk through to Staveley using my knowledge of deer trails,” Howden said. The students’ reaction was unexpected. “They raved about it and said it should become a tourist track.” That fired Howden’s imagination. The land was in a mixture of private and forestry department ownership. Landowner Bob Burnett was less than enthusiastic. He was a developer not a walker and couldn’t see the merit in a track through parts of his land. Howden didn’t give up but admits he was fortunate that a number of things came together, creating the right scenario for the track’s creation. The South Canterbury Catchment Board was paying land holders considerable amounts of money to take grazing off the back country and the Forest Service was looking to do a land swap in the Mt Somers area that would extend that recreation area. While it was certainly not a blessing, all of that occurred at the same time as the government axed development subsidies for farmers. That meant overnight much of Howden’s on-farm work disappeared. “It was also the time of Rogernomics when services and schools were closing and communities were at risk of disappearing. Mt Somers was one of those under threat. I was really keen on the area, I lived there and I saw an opportunity.” The final piece of the puzzle was the change of ownership of Mt Somers Station. New owners Mark and Jo Acland were enthusiastic supporters of developing the track. Using his outdoor recreation contacts, he took 72 people in various groups along what he hoped would become the Mt Somers Track. “They were all given question-

naires asking how we should develop it. Their overwhelming opinion was to just get on and do it,” Howden said. That was all the encouragement he needed. From that point progress was swift. The jig road into an old coalmine was reformed, the Mt Somers Hut was extended to accommodate more bunks, a toilet was built and several local clubs banded together to help build the track. A homemade brochure was printed and in 1987 the district’s MP, Jenny Shipley, officially opened the Mount Somers Subalpine Walkway. It was little more than a foot track with markers placed as a guide. Foot traffic was needed before it became a clear route. That foot traffic came and very quickly the track became popular beyond its developers’ expectations. Development continued with a sauna built at the Mt Somers Hut and in 1989 a second hut, 14-bed Pinnacles, was built by DOC. The Blackburn Mine was reconstructed in 1992 and a time capsule was buried to mark the new millennium. In 2002 the South Face track was surveyed and in 2005, under the co-ordination of Brian Senior, construction started. This section opened in 2003 and in 2007 the Acland Shelter was built.

In 2008 accommodation pressure on the Mt Somers Hut eased when its replacement, the Woolshed Creek Hut, built by DOC, opened. The original musterers’ hut was relocated to the Mt Somers Domain When Howden looks at the track today he says it has become so popular that in parts it is starting to wear out. And he couldn’t be happier. “The people using the track are generally not highly experienced, they’re keen and it’s often their first high country experience so it needs to be a safe track.” That safety is in the hands of a team of enthusiastic vol-

unteers led by walkway society chairman, Barry Austin, he said. “This might have been one man’s idea, but one man’s idea doesn’t get you anywhere unless you can motivate others to help you do the work. I’m very indebted to those early helpers who established the track.” Howden believes he had the easy part of the track’s development. “It’s easy to develop something, the hard part is maintaining it. A track can very easily wear out and the way to save that is by constant maintenance and that’s what Barry and his team are doing. It’s done with passion.” This weekend walkway society members celebrate the track’s 35th birthday with a dinner and on Sunday there will be a walk into the Woolshed Creek Hut.

■ RECYCLING OR RUBBISH?

Not all takeaway coffee cups are created equal but the difference in the lifespan of a plastic cup and a biodegradable cup can be measured in centuries. The growth in use of biodegradable takeaway coffee cups is applauded by the recycling industry, but they’re still another player in bulking up landfill sites, says Ashburton’s waste recovery manager Craig Goodwin. While those cups are described as recyclable, in reality that can only happen if they become part of a ‘hot’ composting process, he said. “There’s such a variation in the products and with a windrow composting system like ours they’re very slow to break down.” Consumers might think they were doing the right thing by putting their coffee cups in the recycling bin, but during the sorting process they would be flicked out and put into landfill, Goodwin said. He recommends that biodegradable cups join their plastic counterparts as rubbish, but said the

key difference is in the length of time the two types of cup take to break down – a year or two against 300 years. By weight, takeaway cups did not contribute significantly to the weight of waste trucked to the Kate Valley Landfill site, he said. Goodwin likened biodegradable coffee cups to compostable barbecue plates and utensils in having the ability to decompose, but not at the same rate as greenwaste. “And that creates a real problem for us. The good thing about these compostable cups though is that if they go into landfill they’ll break down so they’re still a far better option than plastic cups.” Takeout coffee cup lids, however, can be recycled. Goodwin said he was seeing a decline in the quantity of plastic takeaway cups. That’s about education and awareness, similar to the declining use of plastic bags, he said. Right – Even though they may be classed as biodegradable, the new type of coffee cups still end end up in landﬁll along with their predecessors (right).

If you’re able-bodied, have three hours to spare on a Thursday, then the Salvation Army’s home store needs you. As staff look towards increasing demand for the army’s services over winter, community ministries co-ordinator Judith Lilley said increased demand for household goods means someone is needed for pick up and delivery work. “Our lovely van driver has moved away from Ashburton and now we’re looking for someone ablebodied who can give us a few hours each Thursday,” she said. All that’s needed is a clean driver’s licence and the ability to drive a

manual van. The job is not onerous, Lilley said, but it does require someone who is able to lift household furniture. It’s volunteer work that that takes about three hours a week, she said. The home store and community foodbank are also making a plea for food, clothing and household items ahead of winter demand. Warm bedding and jackets are two areas where there is always a shortage and always demand, Lilley said. And in the foodbank, while stocks are adequate at the moment, cans and packets of soup are always in high demand during the colder months, she said.

Sarkozy ‘a real liar’ Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy was handed preliminary charges yesterday over allegations he accepted millions of euros in illegal campaign funding from the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. A judicial official told AP that investigative judges overseeing the probe gave the exPresident charges of illegally funding his 2007 winning campaign, passive corruption and receiving money from Libyan embezzlement. The charges came after Sarkozy was detained for two days of questioning by anticorruption police at a station in Nanterre, northwest of the French capital. Sarkozy, 63, who was France’s President from 2007-12, has repeatedly and vehemently denied any wrongdoing. An investigation involving funding for his winning 2007 presidential campaign first was launched in 2013. Investigators are examining claims that Gaddafi’s regime secretly gave the politician 50 million euros overall for his campaign. The sum would be more than double the legal campaign funding limit at the time — 21m euros. In addition, the alleged payments would violate French rules against foreign financ-

Austin bombing suspect ‘smart, polite’ A 23-year-old suspected of planting deadly bombs that struck fear across Austin was described yesterday by his uncle as a smart and kind “computer geek” and a friend said he was an assertive person who would end up being “kind of dominant and intimidating in conversation.” Neither had any idea what might have motivated Mark Anthony Conditt, who authorities say died after detonating a bomb in his sport utility vehicle as officers moved in for an arrest near Austin. The attacks in the Texas capital and suburban San Antonio killed two people and wounded four others. “I mean this is coming from nowhere. “We just don’t know what. I don’t know how many ways to say it but everyone is caught off guard by this,” Conditt’s uncle, Mike Courtney of Lakewood, Colorado, told The Associated Press. At a news conference, Austin Police Chief Brian Manley said he considers a 25-minute recording on cellphone found with Conditt a “confession,”

in which Conditt talks in great detail about the differences among the bombs he built. But Manley suggested that there might never be a clear motive, noting where the explosives were placed or addressed seems random. Conditt grew up in Pflugerville, a suburb just northeast of Austin where he was still living just a few miles from his parents’ home after moving out. Yesterday authorities recovered homemade explosives from inside the residence, which he shared with roommates. Conditt’s family said in a statement they had “no idea of the darkness that Mark must have been in.” Conditt was the oldest of four children who were all home-schooled. Jeff Reeb, a neighbor of Conditt’s parents in Pflugerville for about 17 years, said he watched Conditt grow up and that he always seemed smart and polite. Reeb, 75, said Conditt and his grandson played together into middle school and that Conditt regularly visited his

In the blog titled Defining my Stance he gives his opinion on several issues, often in response to commentary by someone else. Conditt wrote that gay marriage should be illegal, argued in favour of the death penalty and gave his thoughts on “why we might want to consider” eliminating sex offender registries. Of gay marriage, Conditt wrote: “Homosexuality is not natural. Just look at male and female bodies. They are obviously designed to couple.” In the “about me” section, Conditt wrote that he wasn’t that politically inclined, saying he viewed himself as conservative but didn’t think he had enough information “to defend my stance as well as it should be defended.” - PA

What’s in a name?

Drunken Woman Lettuce because it’s easy to grow, tastes good (sweet rather than bitter) and, importantly, is slow to bolt. In fact, it was because customers kept requesting it that we decided to add it to our list of lettuce seedlings this year.

I enjoy it when a plant has an interesting name or a name that makes complete sense for it. Love in a Mist, Carolina Reaper and Canterbury Bells are just some of the plants I can think of, what I consider to be, intriguing names. But none of those names come close to the newest variety of lettuce seedlings available online – Drunken Woman (Fringed Head) Lettuce. How on earth did it get that name? Obviously, I’ve done a quick google search, and I’ve also asked for opinions on our Facebook page. But I haven’t found a concrete answer yet. Do you know? What I have found, is that it’s an incredibly popular variety of lettuce to have in the garden. Many of our customers have said it’s their absolute must-grow variety

Drunken Woman is an Italian heirloom variety of lettuce that produces attractive bright green leaves with ruffled (almost frizzy) edges in a deep bronze colour. The definition of what an heirloom variety is, is a hot topic of debate. But, generally it means that the plant variety is open-pollinated and that the variety has been around for 50 or more years (some say it must be over 100 years).

In around four to eight weeks you can expect your lettuce to be ready to harvest. Like many other gardeners these days, I like to just pick the leaves I need from the outer edges and leave the plant growing in the garden. Oh, and don’t forget to watch out for slugs.

So, while we’ve only just started selling Drunken Woman, it’s been grown by other gardeners for a long time! And what does open-pollinated mean? This usually refers to seeds/plants that use the birds and bees to naturally pollinate and will ‘breed true’ – i.e. produce plants roughly identical to their parents. When it comes to planting Drunken Woman lettuce, just grow it like you would your other varieties. That is, plant it in welldrained soil in a sheltered spot and space each seedling around 20cm apart.

Raptor an awesome experience

ord revealed its beefed-up Ranger, the Raptor, in Bangkok recently, which will be launched in New Zealand later this year with prices announced closer to

sale date. While the more urban-favoured Ford Ranger has been New Zealand’s number one vehicle for three years in a row, the Raptor has been designed for tougher offroading. The Ranger Raptor includes standard front and rear Fox Racing Shox shock absorbers for high speeds off-road. It has increased ride height, a wider track and improved approach and departure angles for extreme off-road capability and stability. The 2018 Raptor also gets a new powertrain of a 2-litre bi-turbo diesel engine, paired with a 10-speed transmission that provides closer gear ratios over a wider span. Despite its smaller capacity compared to current Ranger models available in New Zealand, the engine produces 157kW of power and 500Nm of torque, making it the most powerful in the line up compared with the 470Nm 3.2-litre diesel Ranger Wildtrak. Designed by Ford Performance, the company says Raptor has been configured specifically for customers in Asia Pacific, with the first models arriving in New Zealand in Q3 this year. New NSX not here - yet

roduction of the new Honda NSX hybrid supercar in righthand-drive form began at the company’s Performance Manufacturing Centre in Marysville, Ohio back in August 2016. Honda Australia launched the secondgeneration NSX in October the same year as a strictly limited volume car sold through five selected dealerships – one each in NSW, Victoria, Queensland, West Australia and South Australia. With Australian Luxury Car Tax the launch price was $420,000 with many of the carbon fibre interior and exterior components offered as options in the US being standard, including the carbon fibre roof, aerodynamics package and carbon ceramic brake discs. Like all cars in the high-price brackets, the NSX should be significantly less expensive in New Zealand where a LCT doesn’t apply. But Honda New Zealand still isn’t saying how much and where enthusiasts will be able to buy one just yet. Back in early 2015 Honda NZ announced the new NSX would go on sale here during 2016 but the local introduction has been pushed back on at least two occasions. However the car is finally coming to New Zealand with an early May launch date being announced last week by Honda New Zealand. We asked the question of Honda NZ but

it is keeping the pricing, sales strategy and detailed specification under wraps till the launch. But that’s about the only things we don’t already know about Honda’s all-new flagship and the successor to the original NSX that shifted many of the benchmarks in the design and production of supercars when it was introduced 1989. The centrepiece of the new NSX is its highly advanced Honda Sport Hybrid

SH-AWD powertrain. At the rear, a direct drive electric motor is housed between the 3.5-litre V6 twin turbocharged engine and the nine-speed dual clutch transmission. In addition, the front wheels of the NSX are powered independently by two parallel high-performance electric motors. The NSX utilises the front-mounted Twin Motor hybrid electric motors to provide electronic torque vectoring that achieves dynamic, instantaneous and continuous

distribution of electric motor torque to enhance the precision of handling and cornering performance in all driving situations. Honda’s V6 turbocharged petrol engine develops a very nice 373kW from 65007000rpm and has 550Nm of torque from 2000-6000rpm. The total combined output of the hybrid system is estimated to be 427kW with 646Nm of torque.

n award-filled year on from its world premiere at the 87th Geneva International Motor Show, the McLaren 720S is again taking the Geneva spotlight with a breathtaking-in-blue bespoke creation from McLaren Special Operations. Combining the deepest of deep blue paint finishes specially formulated for the car with a classic Saddle Tan leather interior, the McLaren 720S in Atlantic Blue by MSO presents the dynamism of the McLaren Super Series wrapped up in a timeless, luxury-accented allure. McLaren Special Operations’ latest creation comes a year after MSO’s first bespoke project on the second-generation Super Series, the 720S Velocity by MSO, which was shown in Geneva in 2017. his year marks a significant milestone for a well-liked and iconic vehicle. It’s just short of 70 years since the first Land Rover was introduced to the public at the Amsterdam Motor Show. During World War Two the Rover car company had produced military vehicles, and when the war ended one of Rover’s “shadow factories” became the manufacturing facility for Land Rovers. The Wilkes brothers, who were executives at Rover, saw an opportunity to develop a utility vehicle using aluminium, which was ready available after the war at a time when steel was hard to come by. A prototype was developed in 1947 and Land Rover production began the following year. The design may have been influenced by the Jeep and the prototype, later nicknamed Centre Steer, was built on a Jeep chassis and axles. The early choice of colour was dictated by military surplus supplies of aircraft

cockpit paint, so early vehicles only came in various shades of light green. Components produced for Rover cars, especially the engines, were ideal for use in the Land Rover. Consequently Rover found themselves in the position of producing both upmarket saloons and utilitarian vehicles. And in a strange twist of fate Rover often made more from the good old go-anywhere basic Land Rovers than from their luxurious cars. The Land Rover was a runaway success and these iconic vehicles are now prized by collectors. Many of those collectors including locals. Edward Winchester and Steve Gielingh will be celebrating Land Rover’s birthday during a national rally based in Methven, which began yesterday and continues until Monday. Both Edward and Steve, both of whom own quite rare Land Rovers, have been looking forward to taking part in the rally being organised by the Association of Rover Car Clubs, incorporating Land Rover.

Rover cars as well as Land Rovers will be seen about the district and Selwyn Heatley, one of the organisers, says enthusiasts are coming from all around the country and from overseas to celebrate this special occasion. Selwyn goes on to say the Land Rovers we’ll see range from the oldest to the newest, with just about everything in between. A varied and very interesting programme has been arranged for those taking part, which includes visits to local attractions and places of historical interest. There are competitions during which driving and navigation skills will be tested and there are also opportunities for retail therapy. The enthusiasts coming to our district are also keen to share their interest with the public and will be doing this by staging a public display at the Methven Showgrounds on Sunday. It will be a fun day with a carnival atmosphere. Land Rovers have always been adapt-

able and have been put to use in countless ways in all sorts of locations and situations, including firefighting. The display on Sunday will include Land Rover fire engines and hopefully a previous Methven appliance along with military vehicles. And during the day an example of a jet engine developed by Rover will be fired up. There will be the opportunity for rides in Land Rovers which will no doubt be enjoyed by younger and older visitors alike and maybe bring back nostalgic memories for some. A fun day like this would not be complete without a tug-of-war, so the Land Rover enthusiasts are having one, but it’s one with a difference. Billed as people power versus Land Rover power, the tug-of-war will no doubt be interesting. And so will the result! The day will conclude with a Grand Parade at 3pm and local Land Rover and Rover owners who are not taking part in rally are invited to bring their vehicles on the day and join the parade. Admission is by gold coin with proceeds going to Methven Care Community Trust. Land Rovers are a whole lot different now than the originals which made their appearance 48 years ago which is as expected. Land Rovers will always be iconic. As are their saloon cousins, Rover cars. And it will be great seeing quite a few of these fabulous vehicles.

NZ politicians should listen and learn P

erhaps we should just praise the lord for a moment that Shane Jones has had nothing to do with the visit of former US President Barack Obama. Because, while most of the country delves its way into the big-hitting political names jaunt around New Zealand, Jones is continuing to make an absolute sham of himself as he struggles to hold back the emotion over this constant issue with Air New Zealand – of which the Government retains a majority ownership of. Jones received a bit of a telling off from Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern for his latest stunt in which he suggested that the boss of Air New Zealand should butt out of politics and that Air New

Zealand’s chairman should be sacked. Jones has been ruthless. He’s thrown verbal attacks left, right and centre, he’s laughed at his own words and that unnerving smile has been produced on more than one occasion. In short, he’s turning into – or has already turned into – Winston Peters. And as one of his men goes to war, the leader of the New Zealand First Party must be sitting back and smiling as his minions

do the dirty work below him. He bartered and bargained his way into some form of power but other than stand like an emotionless puppet next to Ardern, he’s achieved very little in the early stages of the coalition. Peters sold his campaign on a number of things and there were a number of telling points he took to the coalition table as his sweeteners and deals for both Labour and National, but he’s yet to really sink his teeth into any of it – preferring to live a seemingly sheltered life in the background while the likes of Jones make a mockery of things in front of him. Peters heavily relied on the support of both the racing and fishing industries in the lead-up to the election and promised sig-

nificant returns for that support. He announced some harebrained plans for the racing game, including a state-of-theart artificial racecourse in the North Island and promised some form of cash relief at a yet-to-be determined point, but the general feeling is that he based a lot of that on empty promises. New Zealand’s leaders would have done well to sit down and take in the knowledge and experience of Obama while he was in town. Instead, apart from a cordial meeting with the Prime Minister, he preferred – or at least so it seemed – to be on the golf course with good friend and former Prime Minister John Key. Obama exudes coolness and had an uncanny knack while in

the big chair over in America to get things across with minimal effort. He could walk the walk and most certainly talk the talk with the best of them and there’s a reason why he was so popular with his people during his time in the White House. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on which way you look at it – the person who has taken his place is seemingly not going to be worth a pinch of salt to anyone when his time comes to an end, so everyone needs to be making the most of the situation while they can. Especially before it’s gone. Perhaps Jacinda and Winston should have picked up the caddy roles for the day to listen and maybe learn.

I’ve been piggin’ out E

very now and again you stumble across a headline that stops you in your tracks. Maybe it’s a sad one like: “KING ELVIS IS DEAD” A world first: “MAN ON THE MOON” Downright scary: “TERRORISTS HIJACK 4 AIRLINERS, DESTROY WORLD TRADE CENTER, HIT PENTAGON; HUNDREDS DEAD” The unbelievable: “GORDON RAMSEY SEX DWARF EATEN BY BADGER” Amusing: “ELTON TAKES DAVID UP THE AISLE”

Well this week I came across another “track-stopping” headline. One of those moments in one’s life when you look back and you can remember exactly where you were when you first heard the news. “MAKIN’ BACON BETTER” I know right! That got your attention eh? Like me I would suggest you

didn’t think it was possible, but apparently it can be done. The people at the foodie website Delish claim there is a way to make bacon taste even better – just add water. As you possibly already know I am prepared to put my body on the line to test things out, all in the name of research and quality control. So yes I have tried this theory and I can confirm, IT WORKS! What you do is this: Put bacon in a non-stick pan and then add just enough water to cover the bottom of the pan. Cook on medium-high, until the water evaporates, be patient as it’s worth the wait. Then reduce the heat to medium until the bacon is nice and

crispy. Not only will your bacon hold its shape better than bacon cooked without water, but in addition to being crispy, it also comes out kind of moist and a little bit chewy, if that’s possible. And an added bonus – no splatter. So for the mature amongst us, cleaning up (stove top, bench and floor) has now got a whole lot easier. For those a little less mature, cooking bacon in the nude is now a thing. More very good news, especially for the financially challenged amongst us, you don’t have to buy the very best cuts of bacon. My research was performed on a $5 budget-style pack from a local supermarket. For the record I am prepared to put my body on the line again to experiment with ‘sponsored’ finer cut(s) of bacon. I think it will transform ALL bacon. To back my findings up, my lovely wife took part in the experiment also. Not the cooking in the nude part, but I’ll keep working on that!

She is also a fan of bacon. Like me, she carefully chewed each piece, tasting its salty goodness. “It tastes good,” she finally said. I know that doesn’t look overly convincing on paper but if you could have heard the expression she put into the ‘good’, you’d know, like me, it’s a winner. I’m am pretty sure we will both make pigs of ourselves this week and cook up some more bacon, just to make sure it wasn’t a fluke first time up. That’s if Manda hasn’t hogged it all. I can’t remember the last time I saw anyone walking along East St shopping area having a smoke. Outside smoking areas at cafes/restaurants yes. Most smokers (if in town) that I’ve seen tend to go over to the green. The amount of people smoking beside the childrens pool/playground on Walnut Ave by the toilets where the tour buses stop is another story. Apparently the ‘Smokefree parks’ rule doesn’t apply to them? Roberta Well other people end up breathing it in so I think its fine to ban it. Could help people give up too?? And why are cigarette butts not considered rubbish they just get stood on?

Should fine them too. Most smokers are considerate but there will always be those few who ruin things for others. Grahame Yep get rid of smokes in AshVegas altogether, then I wouldn’t have to put up with it drifting over from the neighbours. Really though, I think it’s a great idea to ban it from the central town area, especially in the vicinity of food outlets. Nothing spoils a good meal like smoke drifting though the restaurant door from folk sitting outside. Kristine Okay let’s just get at the guy who pays for not only there own health care but a good percentage of others as well. And you can’t allow them the freedom that you require for yourselves. Good on yas. No wonder the community is no longer a community, people just aren’t allowed to be themselves and be accepted in this town.

$10m revamp for Merivale Mall A $10 million retail refurbishment under way at a Christchurch suburban shopping mall is due to be finished before the end of the year. Nicola Dolan, centre manager at Merivale Mall near Papanui, said works had started last May, would be finished around early November and were being undertaken by Naylor Love, with AMP the project managers and Aecom consulting to them. Evan Harris, Colliers International’s Christchurch-based national retail director of real estate management, welcomed the changes, saying although work has been under way for nearly 12 months, there had been little announced. “There has been a considerable amount of earthquake upgrading work being undertaken and in discussion with tenants there’s been a lot of talk about what’s happening,” he said. The mall has more than 40 stores, with FreshCoice its major tenant. Volatility weighs heavily

nvestors across the globe have been on tenterhooks this week, in the lead up to the Federal Reserve meeting in the US. Recent market volatility has continued to weigh while geopolitical tensions and a continuation of trade issues have also dented investor sentiment. The key focus for investors this week was the US Federal Reserve meeting. It was the first with Jerome Powell at the helm and the Fed chose to raise rates by 25 basis points, taking the Fed funds rate to a range of 1.50 per cent to 1.75 per cent. This was widely expected with the market pricing in a more than 99 per cent chance that rates would increase. The reason markets were on edge in the lead up to the meeting was that it included the projections and expected path for the Fed to take over the remainder of the year and into 2019. For 2018, the Fed reaffirmed its previous guidance that there would be three rate hikes this year, however they upgraded guidance for 2019. The Fed now expects to raise rates another three times in 2019. Ten-year treasury yields spiked again while markets moved lower following the announcement. On the local front, the dairy sector has captured the attention of the market with corporate results from Synlait and Fonterra as well as the latest Global Dairy auction. The Global Dairy auction saw a 1.2 per cent decrease in the index price, its third decline in a row. The driver behind the decline was a sharp fall in the price of skim milk powder. Whole milk powder prices held up well, managing to eke out a 0.1 per cent gain. Most

other products on offer remained flat. On the same day as the dairy auction, Fonterra released its half year result. It was a mixed result which saw the dairy giant record a $348 million loss. There were a number of contributing factors with the Beingmate impairment charge as well as the fine from Danone key to the loss. The company announced a cut to its dividend while CEO Theo Spierings also announced he would be stepping down. However, there were a number of positives for the company as well, with the forecast farmgate milk price being upped to $6.55 from $6.40 for the current season. The company also reaffirmed its full year guidance and had strong growth during the second quarter. Synlait Milk’s half year result could not have been a more different story. The company produced a record half year net profit, driven by higher production levels as well as stronger sales from high margin products. The company also managed to reduce its debt significantly over the period while also expanding its supply through new site purchases. The share price rocketed to a record high following the result, with its share price closing the day up more than 14 per cent. In other corporate news, Kath-

mandu also published its result, although this was somewhat swept to the side as the company also announced that it would acquire Ozob Footwear. The acquisition was funded through a share placement which raised $40 million. The RBNZ was also in focus this week although the outcome seemed like a foregone conclusion. The central bank kept rates on hold, with interim governor Grant Spencer reiterating rhetoric from the previous couple of decisions. Risks remain elevated and it is likely monetary policy will remain accommodative for a considerable period. Next week, Adrian Orr will take over as the new Governor of the RBNZ. Political tensions continue to be present although have been somewhat muted this week by economic data. Concerns remain over the revolving door in the White House as well as the protectionist policies US President Donald Trump has implemented already and what he is planning on doing next. Russian President Vladimir Putin was re-elected in a landslide victory however, the nation remains in hot water with the UK government over allegations the country poisoned a former spy and his daughter with a nerve agent and in the process harmed numerous bystanders. Enghien camp optimistic A late gallop in a Methven workout last weekend is hardly a confidence-instilling experience, but Ricky May knows full well that if the right Enghien turns up at Addington tonight he will be awfully hard to beat. May will sit behind last season’s 3YO Trotter of the Year in a starstudded feature trot at the meeting and will be holding his breath and crossing everything in the hope that the tough son of Love You brings his best game to the meeting. “It’s just a case of him trotting the whole way, if we get that bit sorted we’ll be right,” May said. As he was down in Invercargill last Saturday, May wasn’t onboard for the Methven workout where Enghien galloped 150 metres out from the post after leading throughout. Co-trainer Greg Hope handled the steering duties and, while it wasn’t a terminal gallop, it was enough to stop his momentum, but it was hard to tell if he tripped on a softening track or was up to his old tricks. “He’s so well at the moment, that’s half the problem I think,” said May. “They’ve changed a bit of his shoeing by the sounds of it so maybe that might make a bit of a difference.” Enghien’s task won’t be as easy as just trotting the whole way however, with the lineup featuring big names like Speeding Spur, Bordeaux, Harriet Of Mot and Habibi Inta – so it is undoubtedly the rising star’s biggest test to date. May’s not worried about the standing start though, which surprises him because he believed

workouts last weekend. “He’s drawn one, I just hope we have enough speed to hold up and try and lead because he races well there. “Mongolian Storm has a lot of gate speed and he’s drawn next to us, so it will be interesting.” Cullenburn, a brave second last week fresh up, also will operate from a good draw but May has a decision to make. With no second line behind him, he has the option to drop

straight onto the back of Sheriff who has drawn the pole. “It seems logical really, but I just wonder whether something might buzz out and try to get across him. “A horse like Pat’s Delight could potentially do that.” The Brendon Hill trained pacer, who finished third in the Sires’ Stakes Final on Cup Day, wouldn’t be the worst knockout hope in the race with a nice trail and a solid tempo. - NZHN

Baker marshalling the Sydney troops Champion Kiwi trainer Murray Baker is sweating on a scratching to allow his emerging three-yearold Mongolian Marshal his shot at Gr.1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) glory tomorrow. Baker and his training partner Andrew Forsman have made no secret of how highly they regard the two-win High Chaparral gelding, who races in the same colours as their 2015 Gr.1 Australian Derby (2400m) winner Mongolian Khan. Baker was rapt with barrier draws for his three Rosehill Guineas candidates – barrier three for Gr.1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) winner Vin De Dance, eight for Mission Hill and barrier two for Mongolian Marshal – but his more pressing concern was seeing the latter promoted from one on the ballot to gaining a start. “They’re outstanding draws but I just hope Mongolian Marshal makes the field,” Baker said.

The only water most of them touched for the day was the rain that fell from the sky, so Ashburton College rowers will be itching to get back out onto Lake Ruataniwha today following a minimal day of racing yesterday. The meet was put on hold consistently throughout the day, with the promise of some racing once the weather gods played their part, but there was nothing in the offing and after being put on hold for a final time late yesterday afternoon just three events were held in the evening to help with the load for today’s schedule. The girls’ under-17 coxed quad sculls were the only crew to hit the water yesterday, winning their quarter-final late last evening. That followed a productive day on Wednesday, where the Ashcoll contingent furthered their chances of medals with good results following the completion of the heats and repechages earlier in the week. Haxby Hefford put himself in a good position to push for a medal in the Under-18 Boys’ Sin-

Softball abandoned The South Island Secondary Schools Division Two tournament ended in a wet fashion yesterday without a ball being pitched. Inclement weather meant that the final day of the tournament was abandoned, and teams were sent home early. Despite the weather, Mid Canterbury Softball will be counting the week a success with a good display of talent on offer throughout the three days of play. The two Ashburton College sides both showed they are consistently improving with some strong victories over the course of the week.

Boult, Southee destroy England Cricket history was made at Eden Park yesterday, and not just as it was the inaugural pink ball test to be played in New Zealand. The hosts sent England into a spin of epic proportions in a thrilling first hour and went on to dismiss them for just 58. It was all over 26 minutes before the tea interval in only 20.4 overs. By the dinner break, New Zealand were 88 for one, already 30 runs ahead. Captain Kane Williamson had gone past 50 for the 27th occasion, and was on 59, and eyeing what would be a New Zealand record 18th century in the final session, and Tom Latham on 26. They overtook England just before 6pm on day one – or after just 3 hours 40 minutes of the match which must be a first. New Zealand lost opener Jeet Raval early, caught behind off a swinging Jimmy Anderson delivery but Latham and Williamson dug in. Williamson was circumspect against the seamers but the arrival of offspinner Moeen Ali pricked his interest. He lofted a six high over wide long on, then slapped a four back through mid on, perhaps recognising the going would be easier against the spinner than the seamers. However he was also unfurling handsome drives against the seamers well before the dinner break. Earlier, for a time it seemed likely to be England’s lowest total in 141 years of tests. That remains 45, at Sydney in 1887. Having won the toss, new ball bowlers Trent Boult and Tim Southee had England on the ropes before the first

drinks break as they lurched to 18 for six, still nine runs shy of avoiding the lowest of all test totals, New Zealand’s ignominious 26 against the English on the same ground in 1955. For a few minutes, there was a decent chance of England dipping below that world record before a Craig Overton boundary edged them to 27. Boult was outstanding, having the ball on a string as he dismissed senior batsman Alastair Cook, then spectacularly, captain Joe Root to put England on the back foot at six for two. It became a procession as the pink ball swung noticeably. Dawid Malan, Mark Stoneman, Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow trudged a path back to the pavilion in brisk order. Southee had opener Stoneman caught behind by wicketkeeper BJ Watling low to his left, then had Bairstow chip a return catch back. When Boult bowled Woakes he had a seriously rapid five wickets off just 42 balls at a cost of nine runs. Ali was bowled by a full length ball, to make it 23 for eight. When Stuart Broad was spectacularly caught one-handed by Williamson, leaping salmon-like at gully, England had lost seven for 11 in 7.4 overs. Root was the key dismissal, beaten by a ball which swung in and whistled past his attempted drive. Things went quickly downhill for England from there. Boult finished the innings, having Anderson caught at point. He took a career-best six for 32 off 10.4 overs, while Southee finished with four for 25 in 10 overs. - NZME

A knee injury to young Warriors second-rower Isaiah Papali’i in the early stages of Saturday’s win over the Gold Coast has seen his replacement Leivaha Pulu named to start at GIO Stadium, with middle forward Agnatius Paasi coming on to the bench along with the versatile Jazz Tevaga. The Raiders are hurting after conceding late tries to lose both their opening games against the Titans and Knights, and Kearney says his players know the size of the task awaiting them as they hunt for a third-straight victory. - NZME

Pay turns to rookie He is the rookie that a new coach is relying on to claim his maiden NRL win. Canterbury coach Dean Pay has responded to his team’s disappointing start to the season by handing Jeremy Marshall-King his first career start for tonight’s clash against Penrith. MarshallKing was one of the first signings Pay made when he replaced Des Hasler late last year, luring the playmaker just days after he signed a one-year extension at the Wests Tigers. “From day one I met him, he impressed me right from then. But the coach but says the Wests Tigers playmaker won’t attract any extra attention as Brisbane draft plans to stop the Sydney club’s giant-killing NRL run. Marshall has made his way home after a 2017 campaign with Brisbane that rebooted his career. “Of course I am, I’m really happy ... In familiar territory There’s no doubt Crusaders coach Scott Robertson knows exactly what to expect when the Super Rugby defending champions tackle the Bulls in Christchurch tonight. Robertson’s time in the All Blacks 15-odd years ago included a stint during Bulls mentor John Mitchell’s two-year tenure as New Zealand coach. Mitchell might be in just his first season with the Bulls, but Robertson says his impact is already apparent. “I know his style, and obviously he’s done a great job with the Bulls,” Robertson said. “It’s going to be a slow process for him because it’s his first year, but you can see the changes and the positive style of play.” He says that was particularly apparent in last week’s game against the Chiefs, when the Bulls shot out to a 21-7 lead before losing 41-28. “It just showed how good their individual players can be, taking those opportunities if you give it to them,” Robertson said. “A couple of little short balls, a one on one, and they gassed a few players. “They’re big men, and a little bit fitter. They get off the ground quick and their skill set under pressure has improved remarkably.” The Crusaders are coming off back-to-back losses against the Highlanders and the Hurricanes, and currently sit third in the New Zealand conference after four games. Most know Perenara as the skillful, immensely competitive Hurricanes and All Blacks No. 9. Few, though, appreciate he emerged from Mana College, a co-ed decile two school with under 400 pupils. It’s an area that I love and respect and I’m proud to call home.” From the late Jerry Collins to the So’oialo brothers, Rodney and Steven; Ellison brothers, Tamati and Jacob, all the way through to Anthony Perenise, Alapati Leiua, Faifili Levave and Apisai Naikatini, Perenara knows off by heart all the Hurricanes to progress from Porirua. Tamati Ellison may not be a high-profile All Blacks midfielder but when he turned up at Mana College it sparked something of a turning point in Perenara’s rugby development, opening his eyes to the possibilities before him. “I remember a day when Tamati came into my school and spoke about being a Hurricane and professional rugby player. “Where we were from we were looked at as you play rugby and then you go onto work.

That kept me on to give it everything I had to the game of rugby.” Mixed with the work ethic instilled by parents Thomas and Fiona, Perenara harnessed Ellison’s advice to make the most of his abilities. “The Canes were the team I always supported. I didn’t have the privilege of getting to a helluva

lot of their games as a kid but I definitely watched them week in, week out. “There were a lot of Porirua boys playing for the Canes when I was growing up so seeing them always gave us a little bit of hope. Having those sorts of influences was pretty cool. Watching the Canes was always exciting and it made you want to be part of it. They always played rugby and that’s something even now we try and look back on and take things from the way they played.” Ahead of his 100th Super Rugby match against the undefeated Highlanders in Wellington tomorrow, Perenara is now the one providing inspiration. Perenara isn’t after the accolades but, deep down, he’ll know those in Porirua will proudly puff out their chests as he leads the Canes out this weekend. “Being able to do it 100 times it is special and when I look back I’ll be proud of it but I would rather win this week because it will put our team in a better position.” - NMZE

Injured All Blacks skipper Kieran Read will be nursed carefully back into Super Rugby, placing his availability for the June tests against France in doubt. Read hasn’t played since the test win over Scotland in Edinburgh on November 18, having undergone back surgery a month later to alleviate nerve pain caused by bulging discs. A long-range target for the 32-year-old’s return had been a match for the Crusaders against the Sunwolves in Christchurch on April 21. ‘Storm in a teacup’ Kiwi driver and Supercars championship leader Shane van Gisbergen thinks the debate around the 2018 Holden’s composite panels is a storm in a teacup. The 2016 series champion dominated the opening round on the streets of Adelaide earlier this month but rival teams complained about an unfair weight advantage the new 2018 ZB Commodore had over rivals. It features light-weight composite panels on the bonnet and roof as opposed to the steel panels used on the Ford, Nissan and old model Commodores. But van Gisbergen said those views are ill-informed. “The thing people don’t realise or they haven’t looked at is the hatchback of the car – the way the car separates at the firewall, there was no firewall so we had to make our own,” he said. “Then there is all steel hinges for the hatchback on the top of the roof and all the weight is back up high again. “It really isn’t an advantage. “I think people got excited about the composite roof and don’t see all the stuff that goes with it. “I think it is fair. We do have a lighter car, which is great, but it isn’t the centre of gravity that is the advantage. “I think it is a storm in a teacup. “It has been allowed because it isn’t an advantage. People kick up a stink about it. “Last year, we didn’t have the best car to start with and we ground it out and brought the pace back. “Other teams don’t remember the same result happened last year at the same race.”

While it proved extremely fast on the Adelaide street circuit van Gisbergen said the real test of his new car will come this weekend at the Melbourne Park Formula 1 circuit. “It was interesting at the testing trying to figure out how the car was going to be,” van Gisbergen explained. “When we got to Adelaide it was pretty quick and similar to last year. “But I think we will only find out what it is like over the next few rounds what it is really like. Adelaide isn’t really an aerodynamic circuit so we are not too sure. “I think it is pretty similar [to last year’s car]. It gets done with all the parity testing and it actually didn’t feel like it had big downforce. It actually felt less in some corners. But the way it drives it is a lot smoother and a lot less attitude through the corners so that makes it easier to drive and set up. “You don’t really know until you get to a place with faster corners like Melbourne this weekend or Phillip Island – that is when we will get the true picture of how good it really is.” But despite that change van Gisbergen isn’t expecting the racing to be any different. - AAP

Ashburton-born cyclist Jason Christie has been given a lifeline ahead of next month’s Commonwealth Games. Cycling New Zealand announced this week that Christie, who wasn’t initially named in the squad to head to the Gold Coast, had been called in as a replacement for Alex Frame and will compete at the Games. It came off the back of a tumultuous couple of months, in which Christie appealed his non-selection with the New Zealand Sports Tribunal. The Sports Tribunal earlier this month dismissed Christie’s appeal against the decision not to be selected by Cycling New Zealand, which chose five other riders ahead of him, including a substitute when one became unavailable. Christie appealed on the grounds that CNZ’s nomination criteria had not been properly implemented or followed, that he was not afforded a reasonable opportunity to satisfy the applicable criteria and that there was no material on which the nomination decision could reasonably be based. Based on results and his performance, he believed that he should have been selected ahead of five of the other riders. Christie won the National road race championship in controversial fashion in early January, when he appeared to be showing a “middle-finger salute” to riders who finished just behind him in the sprint. He later claimed the two fingers were to celebrate his second win of the title and no malice was intended, although he issued a statement, saying, “I want to publicly apologise for this image of myself that I’m deeply ashamed of. “I know there is no excuse for this and I promise to do better next time.” Christie, who is in Tasmania preparing for the Oceania Championships this weekend posted to his social media accounts yesterday, announcing the news to his followers. “What can I say, never give up, don’t stop believing,” he said. “Super excited to be heading to the Gold Coast to race the Commonwealth Games Road Race.” Christie was back in his old stomping ground earlier this year and showed everyone his class with a comprehensive win in the Ride the Rakaia. A non-professional cyclist, with no ties to a team or sponsor, Christie now races for Tasman.
