Foley loses appeal bid

Ashburton’s business community is funding a short-term fix-up of the central business district to disguise empty shops and deliver a much-needed lift to East Street. They say the work cannot wait, even though the Ashburton District Council is working on a long-term revamp. Business Mid Canterbury (BMC) has galvanised retailers and landlords for the campaign that will fill shop windows with iconic images of the district. Spokesman Neil Pluck said BMC supported council’s longterm vision for the CBD and he hoped that could be achieved in five years, despite the imminent red-stickering of some buildings in the area. Earlier this year, council said it would be placing placards on

the exterior of 155 earthquakeprone buildings, most in the CBD, and that strengthening work or demolition was required within 12 years. Pluck said BMC liked council’s plans for the future, which included one-way streets and bike lanes, and there was no reason to delay making them reality. Contractors demolishing or working on new buildings could work around new layouts, roads and other features without causing damage. He said the CBD was slipping into disrepair before the 2011 quakes and now desperate for even a quick fix. A working group who called themselves “the short-termers” was about to start beautification on East Street between Moore Street and Tancred Street. Retailers and landlords on that stretch of East Street are backing

the work and will help pay for it. BMC is also contributing and Pluck hopes council will come to the party with some money. An estimate of the work is $10,000 but Pluck doubted it would cost that much as business owners in and outside the CBD had offered to do the work either super-cheap or for free. The short-term work will involve fixing large photographs of iconic Mid Canterbury scenes, taken by well-known Methven photographer Bill Irwin, on the front windows of shops waiting to be tenanted. Hanging baskets with highquality artificial plants would also be hung from shop verandahs; they would be taken down at night and looked after by individual retailers. Pluck said the photographs would be large enough to fill windows and the artificial plants

would be indistinguishable from real ones. Landlords had already moved to create displays in vacant shops to create a more positive feel. An artfully created gate would be created to block the dark and weedy alley between buildings mid-block. The beautification work would move north block by block. Pluck said the district needed Ashburton’s town centre to be vibrant and healthy and council could not afford to wait 10 years to implement its plan. “The CBD needs a birthday and it needs to start now.” Submissions on council’s CBD plan closed yesterday at 5pm. With a couple of hours to go, nearly 60 submissions had been received, the majority from private individuals. Submissions will be heard by councillors next month.

A jealous truck driver who bashed his Christchurch neighbour and occasional lover to death has lost his latest appeal to the highest court in New Zealand. Timothy Joseph Foley admitted assaulting 41-year-old Michelle Mary Lawrence before he phoned emergency services on June 9, 2012. But in his appeals, Foley claims that there was a “13 to 15 minute window” where another person had delivered the final fatal blows. Foley pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced in May 2015 to life imprisonment with a minimum non-parole period of 11 years, eight months after pleading guilty to the murder of Lawrence in the suburb of Linwood. The Court of Appeal dismissed Foley’s first appeal, concluding it was unlikely a third person could have inflicted the fatal injuries in such a narrow timeframe while also finding “nothing meritorious in the various complaints made about the process which had preceded his guilty plea”, including complaints over police and counsel conduct. And now, the Supreme Court has agreed with the trial and appeal judges that there has not been a miscarriage of justice, and Foley’s bid to appeal his conviction has been denied. Foley received a trespass notice from Lawrence five days before her murder. On the night of the attack, he struck her around the head “at least eight times” with a steel jimmy bar. Foley phoned 111 before covering her with a blanket and leaving her bloodied and dying on the floor. She was rushed to hospital with head injuries and died three weeks later. In sentencing, Justice Cameron Mander said Foley had “harboured some jealousy” after thinking she was having a relationship with another man. Reports before the court during his trial noted Foley – who had 85 previous convictions primarily for fraud and dishonesty offences – had a “habit of telling grandiose lies”. - NZME

Scout’s rescue efforts earn rare, coveted award By Katie todd

A brave rescue effort on the skifield has earned a local scout a rare and coveted award. Ronan Kenny has just taken home The Chief Scout’s Commendation after helping a badly injured skier in September. Kenny and his father had been skiing off-trail near the bottom of the triple chairlift at Mt Hutt when he heard a voice pleading for help, Mania-ORoto scout group zone leader Michelle Brown explained. He looked up to see a badly injured skier near a rock, and immediately yelled out to his father who was lower on the trail to get assistance. While he made several attempts at climbing up, it was too icy for him to do so safely. However, Kenny continued to yell out to the man and reassure him that help was on the way. The first ski patrol member on the scene then asked Kenny to climb around the other side of the rock and advise the

rest of the patrol members to approach from the top rather than underneath the rock because of the icy conditions. For more than 30 minutes, Kenny stayed put in the “cold, gloomy conditions” protecting the ski patrol members and the patient by diverting other skiers and riders away. Kenny received a letter of commendation from the Mt Hutt Ski Patrol for his efforts with an injured guest with life threatening injuries, and Mt Hutt also contacted scouts. On recommendation of Governor-General Dame Patsy Reddy – New Zealand’s Chief Scout – Kenny was then presented with The Chief Scout’s Commendation last week. “I think he was pretty gobsmacked. It came as quite a surprise,” Brown said. It was the first time anyone in the Mania-O-Roto scout group could recall a member receiving The Chief Scout’s Commendation. Kenny’s father was particularly over the moon to see him win the award, Brown said.

Big day round the ECan table Environment Canterbury Council (ECan) adopted its long-term plan for 2018-28 on Thursday as well as approving the draft Regional Land Transport Plan, and their initial proposal for representation in the upcoming 2019 local body elections. ECan chairman Steve Lowndes said it was a significant day around the council table confirming the activity and budget for the coming years. “It is a balancing act around budgets, community desires from both ends of the spectrum on many issues, what we have to do under the regulatory framework, and what we are inspired to achieve,” Lowndes said. “The council has enjoyed and valued the input from those peo-

ple who have engaged with us during the process. “While it is not possible to please absolutely everyone, as often views come from completely opposing sides, as a whole we are happy with where this plan has landed. “It is ambitious, focused on action on the ground, and will deliver the results we want to see.” The outcome of the ECan LTP has the total rates revenue for 2018/19 set to rise by 4.9 per cent from the total rates revenue in 2017/18. The Regional Land Transport Plan was also approved through the recommendation from the Canterbury Regional Transport Committee to incorporate changes arising from a review.

The changes centre around the incorporation of the draft Transport Agency Investment Proposal, and accelerating the LED street light renewal programme of activities for Waimate District Council. “Essentially this plan is our bid to central Government for the support required for transport networks into/out of and around our region. “We consulted with the community on the plan earlier in the year, and it aligns with the Government’s direction and community needs,” Lowndes said. ECan also approved its initial proposal for the ward boundaries, and number of councillors for each, for the 2019 elections to go out for public consultation. Lowndes said that the time had

come to look to the formation of a fully-elected council again. “The controversy around the governance model is no secret, with many people holding views on whether commissioners should have been brought in and when the return to fully-elected should have happened. “Regardless, as a council there has been a great deal of excellent work and progress made over the past few years, and the mixed model is currently working extremely well as a cohesive unit. “The constituencies and representation we will now be consulting on, reflects where we think the communities of interest lie, but it is important to note that once elected the council works as a whole and represents all interests

across the region.” Under the proposal, Selwyn is joined with the Ashburton District to form a ‘Mid Canterbury’ ward with two elected representatives. North Canterbury (Waimakariri, Hurunui, Kaikoura) has two, South Canterbury (Timaru, Waimate, Mackenzie, part of Waitaki) has one. Christchurch is divided into four wards with two members each. Te Reo Maori names have been adopted for each of the constituencies, but not released to the public yet. It was acknowledged at the meeting that avenues are also being explored with Ngai Tahu regarding mana whenua representation continuing on the council after the elections.

Many Mid Cantabrians have had their lives saved by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. Here three share their stories as the service celebrates 25 years nationwide. Susan Sandys reports.

estpac Rescue Helicopter has completed over 10,000 missions during its 25 years service. When accidents and medical emergencies occur, the service is there 24/7. It brings medical assistance to patients at the scene within an hour and increases their chance of making a full recovery by up to

80 per cent. Those who have been rescued in the past, and their families, remember well the moment they first heard the helicopter in the distance and the feeling of huge relief as it arrived. The service responds to all sorts of emergencies, including motor vehicle accidents, search and rescue missions and medical incidents.

The crew are intensive care paramedics and train in winching, search and rescue, orientation, bush survival and helicopter underwater escape. Westpac Rescue Helicopters service the four main New Zealand centres; Auckland, Waikato, Wellington and Christchurch and from these bases cover the majority of New Zealand.

shburton snowboarder Andrew Jopson was contending with a few icy patches on Mt Hutt when he caught his edge and fell face first. The surface of the snow was hard and his body slammed into it. He got back up again, but felt pain in his abdomen and knew something was not right. “I wasn’t really sure how bad I hurt myself, so I just kind of made my way to the mountain medical centre,” he said. Staff there put him on a stretcher and called the Westpac chopper in. The helicopter ride saved him what would have been a bumpy

and painful ride to hospital by ambulance. “They were really good, the guys that were in the helicopter they just helped keep me calm while I was being airlifted, it was super quick,” he recalls now, five years later. Jopson, today aged 20, is forever grateful that he was able to get to hospital so quickly. Once admitted he was diagnosed with a ruptured spleen and had to stay in hospital for three nights. For the following 90 days he could do little more physical activity than walking, but the University of Canterbury student is back up on the mountain as a regular visitor once again.

hris Keenan knew the macrocarpa he had been cutting into with his chainsaw was falling. It was December 17, 2010, and the Pendarves farm manager had been out removing the tree on a newly-acquired block. He had scarfed the tree in the right place and was wearing all the correct safety gear. But as careful as he had been, it was not careful enough. The element of the unknown came into play and the tree sprang back. By the time he realised which way it was going, it was too late. He tried to get out of its path, but its branches hung low at their tips and were touching the ground around him, blocking him from making a quick exit. “And I probably went the wrong way,” the dad of two recalls. Soon he was pinned to the ground by a heavy branch across his hip area. His son Jake was 10 at the time and was nearby at a tractor when he heard his father screaming. With no cellphone reception in the area, it was fortuitous that an Ashburton District Council ranger was checking water races about 400 metres away and Jake ran to him to raise the alarm. The ranger radioed back to the council office, from where a 111 call was made.

Keenan does not remember much from the time he was under the tree, but does recall his mates from the Pendarves Rural Fire Unit arriving on the scene and comforting him. He is himself a member of the brigade. The Westpac helicopter team was on the way and, luckily for Keenan, did not mind stopping by at the scene despite already having a patient on board on the way to Christchurch. They dropped off a paramedic, who was able to stabilise Keenan prior to fire brigade members lifting the branch off him. “There was quite a feeling of relief to get out from there and still be breathing,” he said. He then was kept in an ambulance at the scene, where he drifted in and out of consciousness and was given medication to numb the pain. The chopper returned soon after and he believed getting to hospital as quickly as he did made his full recovery so much more likely. Like many Mid Cantabrians, he is in awe of the lifesaving service offered by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter teams. “Every minute counts, they are just amazing those guys,” he said. In hospital he was diagnosed with a broken pelvis and was there for one month. He got back to work within six months.

ethven dad Ron Smith is in no doubt today that the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, along with an emergency personal locator beacon, saved his life. About one year ago he and fellow experienced trampers Verity Lydford, Lew Shaw and Danny Symons were on a weekend hiking trip on the West Coast. After an hour of challenging terrain, Smith slowed up with pain in his chest. He was able to reach Boo Boo Hut by about 7pm. His friends had waited for him and made sure the fire was going and the billy boiling, so he was able to replenish with a hot drink. However, by this time his pain was turning into severe discomfort. Lydford recalls Smith reported his pain rating as eight out of 10, and within an hour of arriving at the hut his heart rate decreased from the high 90s to mid-80s. “We were not sure what Ron was suffering from. Discussions were had around indigestion, heart attack and angina,”

Lydford said. “The call was made at 8.40pm to activate my beacon.” The beacon used was manufactured by Ocean Signal, which have used Smith’s story in a press release to promote their product. The Westpac chopper was soon on its way and arrived about 10pm. It winched down a medic to assess Smith, before he was transported to Greymouth Hospital. He was diagnosed as having suffered a heart attack. He was flown to Christchurch Hospital the next day and had a stent installed. He has now recovered and is once again able to get out on the hills and do what he enjoys. He said it had been terrific to have the professional chopper paramedics be able to come to the rescue in his case and all the other many call-outs they responded to. “They really looked after me. I would have died if I had of walked out,” Smith said.

Volunteers community’s lifeblood By Katie todd

Every year, around 5000 people will be admitted to the Ashburton Hospital. Around 2600 day patients will receive care, around 15,000 patients will attend outpatient appointments and more than 300 mothers will give birth. But the service would not be the same without the silent army of volunteers working away behind the scenes, said volunteer co-ordinator Sara Grant – by assisting patients and the hospital’s 430 staff. With National Volunteer Week well under way, there are hundreds of volunteers at the hospital deserving a big pat on the back including the Friends of the Hospital and Tuarangi Home, Red Cross volunteers, Day and Night Sitters, Meals on Wheels drivers, Pulmonary Rehab volunteers and Park Street Day Care Centre volunteers, to name a few. Active round the hospital and beyond, volunteers make a big difference to the support the hospital is able to provide, Grant said. Around 50 volunteers work as Friends of Ashburton Hospital and Tuarangi Home, providing all the home comforts and support patients need. From brewing hot cuppas to maintaining a library trolley, taking patients to the weekly chapel service, knitting for the maternity unit and decorating the annual Christmas tree at the hospital main entrance, the Friends of Ashburton Hospital and Tuarangi Home are always happy to take on a wide range of roles, Grant said. At nightfall, a Red Cross volunteer assists the evening district nurse on her rounds. It can make all the difference for the District Nurse to have an extra set of eyes to read letterbox numbers in the dark, or an extra set of hands to carry equipment into patients’ homes. Meanwhile, chronically ill people receive care and companionship from a group of volunteer Day and Night Sitters, who are happy to provide support and relief for family members.

Then, five days a week between 11.45am and 12.45pm, volunteer drivers from church groups, service and sports clubs and local businesses take to the streets to distribute hot, nutritious Meals on Wheels to older local citizens unable to shop for and prepare their own meals. This service can enable someone to remain in his or her own home, rather than living out their days in a rest home or hospital, Acting Director of Nursing Jane Harnett said. “One of our valued volunteers makes Christmas cards which are delivered to each meals on wheels recipient at Christmas time.” And in the eight-week Ashburton Pulmonary Rehab Programme, volunteers assist specialist health professionals who educate and support patients to breathe a little easier. Those with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder can learn breathing, diet, exercise and day-to-day living techniques. Volunteers add their own value to the hospital’s services, Grant and Harnett explained. “They engage with patients, while we can concentrate on improving their health outcomes”. “It’s about providing a positive patient experience using a more holistic approach. Volunteers can allow us to be more patient-centric,” Harnett said. Just around the corner, another 80 volunteers give their time to the Canterbury DHB run Park Street Day Care Centre, a five-day-aweek service which helps people live in their own home for as long as possible. Regular volunteers help with morning and afternoon teas, serve lunch and join in with activities on the day. Driving volunteers pick up and drop off the 56 members, while entertaining volunteers provide music, talks, fun, trips to open homes and gardens throughout the week, Park Street Day Centre Co-ordinator, Sue Hopkins said. But it’s evident volunteers are exactly what make the valuable service possible. “Our volunteers are just fantastic, they all give their time and

talent. We couldn’t run without them,” Hopkins said. Park Street Day Care Centre are currently hoping to recruit a few more driving volunteers, and she said she would be happy to hear from anyone willing to help. On behalf of Ashburton Health Services, Grant and Harnett said they would like to thank each and every volunteer who chooses to give their time to the local health system. “You add value to the services we provide to the people of Mid Canterbury and our staff,” they said. Stroke figures set to soar

Half a century of volunteering Volunteering has become a way of life for Andrew Brown, who has been helping out at the Ashburton A&P Association for more than 50 years. Brown started volunteering his services at the annual Ashburton A&P Show as a sheep pen steward in 1965. Six years later he was serving on the association’s committee and then in 1990 he became president. “I don’t think I’ve missed a show in my life,” he said. “You

just keep on going.” Brown said he has made a lot of good friends over the years through volunteering, which is one of the reasons why he continues to do it. “It’s a good organisation with good people,” he said of the association, although it has changed since he first got involved. “In the 1960s there were a lot of young farmers who all finished up as stewards. Mind you there was a lot more sheep in those days too.”

He would like to see more young people getting involved today. “With organisations like that, you really do need more young faces coming through.” These days Brown helps out where he’s needed, whether that’s with sheep, grain and seeds, or as maintenance officer in the home industries pavilion. The Ashburton A&P spirit is strong within Brown’s family. Both his grandfather and father were involved, while wife Marion is on the current committee.

Dennis Hopkins recalled feeling unwell and rather light-headed when he woke early one morning in April. It wasn’t until the Taranaki man popped to the loo, walked back to bed, and found he couldn’t talk that he realised something serious had hit him. His wife, Julia, however knew exactly what was happening. “I think you’re having a stroke.” She turned on the light and realised his left eye and the side of his mouth was drooping, then rang for an ambulance immediately. After several months of treatment, Hopkins’ speech and memory had improved, although he’d had to leave his job as a school bus driver. The 71-year-old was thankful his wife had recognised the signs; after all, she’d suffered two strokes herself some years before. New research now warns the Hopkins’ experience is likely to become much more common among Kiwis. In only the next decade, the number of stroke sufferers could balloon by 40 per cent. If further reductions in stroke incidence couldn’t be achieved, the number of sufferers could rise from 7231 in 2015 to 10,112 in 2028. This increase – forecast in a study published in the New Zealand Medical Journal yesterday – would come as a result due to our ageing and growing popula-

tion. But the figure still came as a surprise to the researcher who led the work. “We knew it would go up but didn’t expect the increase to be quite this high,” said Associate Professor Anna Ranta, who heads the University of Otago’s Department of Medicine in Wellington. “The large increase emphasises that our New Zealand health sector needs to implement effective stroke prevention programmes and stroke intervention strategies to minimise the impact on both human suffering and healthcare expenditure.” In New Zealand, it had been estimated up to 9000 people had a stroke each year, and 50,000 people lived with the consequences. Ranta said the new study aimed to project stroke volumes over the next 10 years to help with health sector planning. “Because these figures are growing due to our population growing, it is imperative that the health sector plans ahead and implements effective and appropriate prevention and post-stroke intervention strategies to manage the rise in stroke burden.” Stroke Foundation chief executive Mark Vivian urged all Kiwis to learn FAST, which taught people to recognise the most common symptoms of stroke – facial drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulties – and dial 111 immediately. - NZME

Fabulous final night for schools’ music festival The last night of the annual Heartland Bank Schools’ Music Festival on Thursday was filled with smiling faces and fabulous performances all round. The massed choir kicked off the night with Haere Mai. The intricate harmonies let the audience know they were in for an amazing night. St Joseph’s were first to perform for the night with songs both old and new. Nervous faces walked onto the stage but as soon as the island beats of their first song was heard, they were in familiar territory and the audience watched enthralled as they showcased their talent with well-rehearsed dance moves. Dorie was up next with a cheeky performance. They took the audience for a fun-filled walk down memory lane. The theme song to the Monkees was an audience favourite and laughter rippled through the air. The choir’s antics made the crowd want to jump up and join in. The massed choir was up again with enthusiastic performances from everyone. The positive messages of the songs were inspiring and obvious favourites for

the students. Methven School sang upbeat songs accompanied by live instruments which was a crowd pleaser. Their two talented soloists did a fantastic job. The Ashburton Intermediate choir also gave us the pleasure of live instruments and a talented soloist. The experience of the choir was clear as the harmonies left the audience in awe. The representative choir never ceases to amaze. Elaine Vallender out-did herself once again with her arrangement of an old favourite, Somewhere over the Rainbow. Mount Hutt College debuted their junior choir at the festival and what a pleasure it was to hear them. The completely student-based group chose popular songs that everyone enjoyed. We hope to see them continue and grow as a choir. The massed choir ended the evening with great song choices. We are the World kept the crowd transfixed right until the very end. This was the final performance for Dale Thompson and Fiona Maw. Their contribution will be sorely missed. Congratulations to the per-

The Guardian is a paid daily newspaper circulating within Ashburton and Mid Canterbury. According to their promopuff, the Guardian has gone back to its roots, focusing on news and views as they occur, as opposed to trying to please the community with softer offerings. This refocusing was probably a tough decision – but it has

worked. Circulation – the hallmark of any paid daily – is up. And the improved letters to the editor. In terms of tougher news, the Guardian’s councillor report card story is a good example. The paper has highlighted what the councillors have done and not done in the 12 months since the last election. This story has been done many times before – and it is a good

one for community newspapers. It offers an opportunity for a community newspaper to demonstrate that it is watching what is going on, as opposed, say, to confining its local body coverage to a happy-snap of the mayor and visiting worthy. Community newspaper have a responsibility to report what is going on in their communities, sometimes warts and all.

As part of it all, a normally housebound resident is given a tour of the town’s fairy lights and there’s even home baking involved. More wishes come in and more volunteers are needed. It’s real Kiwi Christmas culture, led by the local paper which does it because it’s the right thing to do.

If Fletcher Building was a movie, it would be Honey I Shrunk The Kids. The shrinking of one of New Zealand’s biggest businesses was graphically illustrated this week at its strategy presentation in Sydney. Unveiled by chief executive Ross Taylor, the strategy included a graphic showing Fletcher as it is now – a group that employs about 18,000 people spread across North America, Europe and Asia. On the page below was a very different picture: it showed that Fletcher’s presence on the globe once the new strategy is executed will be limited to Australia and New Zealand. The Ministry for Primary Industries will start telling farmers directly if neighbouring properties are infected with M. bovis cattle disease or are at high risk. “Some farmers have expressed frustration at not being formally told when a neighbour’s farm is identified as an infected property,” Biosecurity Minister Damien O’Connor said. “MPI [Ministry of Primary Industries] will start directly informing neighbouring farms of infected properties or high-risk properties. This will mean farmers can take appropriate steps to improve their on-farm biosecurity and reduce the risk to their own stock. “This is a measured step that balances the privacy concerns of individuals with the need for farmers to protect their own farms,” O’Connor said in a statement. MPI would also publish a list on its website of the National Animal Identification and Tracing (Nait) numbers of all affected animals, including all those associated with or traced from an infected property. “MPI would also beef up enforcement of the Animal Status Declara-

A salute to all the volunteers W

here would we be without the services of the wonderful people in our community who volunteer their time? People who put their hands up, offering to work for a cause without pay and often without recognition, are the foundation stones of a community with a heart. As National Volunteer Week draws to a close, it’s only fitting the final words of the week hone in on the selfless people who help make our amazing wee community tick on a daily basis. They’re the people who do the jobs that others often don’t want to do. The ones who roll the sleeves up and just get the job done, they see something that

needs doing, and they do it – without complaint and without the expectation of reward. Some do it permanently, others are just every now and then, but each contribution to society is just as important as the other. We are extremely lucky in our small corner of the world to have an abundance of people who volunteer their time daily to ensure that things keep ticking over, across all walks of

life whether. Figures this week suggest that 1.2 million New Zealanders can be classified as volunteers for the work that they do, but you could rest assured in saying that if you sat down and worked it all out that the number would be almost double that amount. But we need to ensure that it continues well into the future. The younger minds of our community need to be made aware of the value of volunteering your time and if only a small percentage of them carry on with that kind of service throughout their lives, then that’s a success. A world without volunteer work certainly has a very bleak outlook. This week has a seen an

incredible act of generosity and volunteer work by the team at Hokonui. They’ve been collecting furiously as person after person arrived through their doors to deliver food to give to the Ashburton Foodbank. The pile of cans of food and other non-perishable items is quite simply amazing, and it will ensure that the foodbank stocks are well and truly served through the remaining winter months. Although not a direct act of volunteering, it still fits perfectly into the category of everything that volunteering is about and that’s giving back to the community – something the Ashburton district is incredibly good at. When the chips are down,

we’ve shown time and time again that there is no hesitation in getting stuck in to help each other when it’s needed and that is something we should be extremely proud of. We’ve attempted to tell some of the stories of those who generously volunteer in this week’s newspapers. In the perfect world we would share them all, but there might not be enough newsprint in a week’s worth of the Guardian to cover everyone. So, if you are one of the thousands of people across our district who do volunteer, consider this as our salute to you. The Ashburton District is better off for your generosity and long may it continue.

he universal outrage over President Trump’s ruthless decision to separate children from their asylum-seeking parents on the Mexican border – a scheme with which even Herr Hitler would have been considerably impressed – has, at last, led to Trump shedding crocodile tears and ending the primitive practice. By a remarkable feat of Twitter-turned deception and blatant “mistruths”, he is somehow blaming the Democrats for his latest policy of the grotesque. It seems the belated intervention of the president’s wife and daughter – as well as that of a former First Lady – has actually penetrated the thick skin of the Commander-in-Chief. As the grandson of a former German immigrant – and a draft-dodger of World War One – (as was his grandson when called up to serve in Vietnam) – one might have thought Trump would have shown greater sympathy for the many thousands of would-be immigrants who wish to escape the current horrors of their own countries and make their way to the United States of America, the land they

have always understood to be that “of the free”. For many of them that is not quite how they have found it. With a xenophobe of Trump’s fanatic intensity in charge, that is hardly surprising. However, he will no doubt find an alternative, “final solution” – something with which the Fuhrer really would have found himself in complete agreement – the details of which are even now forming in his crazed mind. Meanwhile, our much-loved Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, after having given birth to her first child and that of her partner, Clarke Gayford, one can be fairly sure the Ardern-Gayfords will not be separated from their offspring either in the immediate aftermath of its birth or at some unspecified time in the future.

The idea is, of course, abhorrent, that there should ever be an immigration system in our country that enforced such separation, wherever the hopeful immigrant might have come from. With that in mind, it has been surprising the policies of Trump have taken as long as they have to rouse the indignation of shocked citizens round the world. It seems only the overdue involvement of Madam Trump has led to the ending of her husband’s obscene practice. Even then, it has been quite a surprise he did not at once reply with an angry tweet castigating his wife for meddling in “matters she doesn’t understand”. His twittering is not, normally, affected by such old-fashioned scruples. The fact is, though, the world at large has been slow to show its disdain for this latest episode of tyrannical “Trumpery”. The opposition should have been louder and stronger from the first moment it was discovered these dreadful activities were going on under the guise of “firm government”. It is not even a joke to com-

Sport GIVING IT HER ALL Sarah Hewson is off to the Triathlon World Championships on the Gold Coast. BY ERIN TASKER

When Sarah Hewson exceeded her own expectations in her first half ironman event, it made her wonder what she could achieve if she really set her mind to it. So, she found herself a coach and began a more structured training regime and qualified for the Triathlon World Championships. The 28-year-old Ashburton woman was still pinching herself, struggling to believe that in September this year she’d be on the Gold Coast competing alongside some of the world’s best triathletes. “If someone had said that to me a couple of years ago … I would have said ‘dreams are free, mate’,” Hewson said. She’d always been sporty, but it wasn’t until she returned from a stint overseas that she really discovered her passion for triathlon and half ironman racing. “I’d dipped in and out for the past five years or so, but I came back from overseas and decided I needed to do something about my fitness and I’d always wanted to do a half ironman,” Hewson said.

She entered Challenge Wanaka. “And I surprised myself with where I got with the amount of training I did, and me being quite competitive, I decided to get a coach and see how far it could go,” Hewson said. She never dreamt she’d make it as far as she had though. Earlier this year she competed in a triathlon at Corsair Bay where she knew qualification for the world champs was a possibility if she got in the top 12, and within 20 per cent of the winning age group time. “I did that quite easily, and I was quite shocked. “I knew that if I had a good race and just had fun out there and raced my race, there was a high possibility that I could be named in the age group team.” She was, and now Hewson was preparing to take on the world’s best in the 25-29 age group at the worlds. Hewson said she had never really been a goal-setter, she just took everything as it came, and looking ahead to the Gold Coast was no different. She had no real idea of how she hoped to fare in Australia, she

just wanted to give it her all. “I’m just riding the bicycle really, and will see where I’m going,” she said. “I love it and I’m happy to go training. I love getting out on my bike and I’ve got a great group of people I swim with.” In her early multisport days, swimming was her strength. She’d grown up swimming, and having played sports like netball and touch for years, running came naturally. On the bike though, she’d put a lot of work in to bring herself up to speed. At her first half ironman she finished eighth in her category in a time of 5.46.23 hours. “I thought, well if I can get eighth in my age group that’s alright. “I didn’t know what a good time was but everyone said to me it was a good time, so I thought if I can do that with minimal training, I’ll see what else I can do,” Hewson said. Earlier this year she went to Melbourne to compete in a half ironman and finished in under five hours. “I didn’t expect that.

“I had a really good bike, I did my bike in 2.45 hours and averaged 34km/h.” At this year’s Challenge Wanaka Half Marathon she finished third in her age group in a time of 5.26.14 hours. The Wanaka event was really how it all began for her. Before heading off on her big OE, Hewson was there, but competing over the shorter triathlon distance. It was then that she decided she’d love to try the longer event some time, and when she got home from overseas, the time was right. “I always remember that event, the atmosphere down there was just amazing, so I sorted myself out with a bike and got the gear and tried to get myself out the door and do my own training,” Hewson said. She did it, but once she got herself a coach after that first half ironman, training became a lot easier. Her Wanaka-based coach set her a plan and she just had to stick to it. “It’s great having a coach. He sets my plans and you just go off

that, so you don’t have to think, you just look at it and do it,” Hewson said. Between now and September, there was a lot of hard work to be done. There was training, which had to fit in around her job in the office on her family’s farm, and she had to watch what she ate. “You can do all the training, but you need to look at your nutrition and make sure you listen to your body. “It’s easy to push yourself too far and that’s when you can get injured, or sick, or fatigued,” Hewson said. On the Gold Coast the triathlon would be Olympic distance. That’s a 1.5km swim, a 40km bike and a 10km run to finish. Hewson said it was actually the longer distances that really appealed to her, in fact the half ironman – which was a 1.9km swim, a 90km bike and then a 21.5km half marathon to finish – was her preferred event. Once she ticked off the Triathlon World Championships, her next challenge could be to see just how far she could get in the world of half ironman.

A mouth-watering top-of-the-table clash awaits Ashburton rugby league fans today. The Ashburton Barbarians are hoping the public will get out and support them in their crucial Canterbury Rugby League division one clash against the Burnham Chevaliers at Robilliard Park, as they look to carry on the kind of form that took them to a huge 102-point win last weekend. The Burnham Chevaliers were unbeaten this season and sitting at the top of the table heading into the match, with the Barbarians second on points differential, and the Ashburton side know they will have their work cut out for them. It was the Burnham side who handed the Barbarians their first loss this season last month, with their superior fitness shining through in the second half at Burnham. The Ashburton Barbarians led 14-10 at half-time, but Burnham came storming back and won it 44-26. There were plenty of bright spots that day for the Barbarians though, not least Xavier Bartlett’s footwork which led him to score a hat-trick, and his side would need more of that today if they were to get on top of the Chevaliers. The Barbarians headed into the match off a massive win, 112-10 over the Celebration

Lions. The Lions arrived in Ashburton with just 12 players and although they were determined to make a game of it, the Barbarians were never really troubled, leading 46-6 at half-time. Not only did they win big, but the Barbarians also came through the match injury-free, manager Matt Milne said. That meant they should be at full strength for the Chevaliers clash. It had been an odd few weeks in the Canterbury Rugby League division one competition. The Barbarians’ first loss to the Chevaliers was followed by their second loss of the season to the Woolston Rams. Addington then pulled out of the competition meaning the draw had to be re-jigged, so the Barbarians were facing the challenge of the undefeated Burnham side a bit earlier than they’d anticipated. But, they were up for it. “Without any doubt the boys will want to rectify the result of the last encounter with them,” Milne said. “It will be another great game of rugby league going by the last encounter between these two sides and if you had ever thought about coming down and watching then this is the game you want to see.” The game will kick off at Robilliard Park, at the southern end of Chalmers Avenue, at 2pm today.

Marsters bolts into Kiwis Esan Marsters is the bolter in the Kiwis team to face England tomorrow in Denver. The Tigers centre, who has only played 28 NRL games, has been selected ahead of Broncos utility Jordan Kahu, who has been a regular in the Kiwis environment since 2014. With the squad already stripped of so much experience, most pundits thought Michael Maguire would opt for Kahu – who has played fullback, wing and centre for his country – but the new coach has sprung a surprise. “I was very happy and comfortable to go with [Esan],” said Maguire. “He’s been playing well for his club, he’s very strong from the back field bringing the ball back and can offload. “He’s shown some good form and his size and strength is something I am looking forward to seeing on [Sunday].” Maguire admitted he delayed the decision until the last possible moment. “I wanted to go through the training session first before I decided which way I went with Jordan and Esan,” said Maguire. “I wanted to make sure I was thorough.” The other noticeable feature of the team is the employment of Marty Taupau at lock. Taupau has played most of his 20 tests as a prop – usually providing impact from the bench – but has some experience in the back row. “I like to have a bit of size there in the forwards,” said Maguire. “Having Marty there gives us some really good punch through the middle. “He’s got experience. “He’s got great skills and he can play that 13 role. “They have a big forward pack and I thought it was good if I could match that, with the experience I have got through the middle.” Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and Nelson Asofa Solomona will be the starting front

Embracing leadership By Matt Encarnacion From larrikin to leader, James Maloney’s reluctant new role has come somewhat out of the Blues. This time last year he was just the sidekick to Mitchell Pearce for his state. This time last month he was just the deputy – and second oldest bloke at Penrith – to Peter Wallace for his club. But heading into State of Origin II tomorrow, Maloney is shouldering a new kind of responsibility as a leader. “It’s something I’ve never wanted. “I’ve never had any ambitions to do that sort of thing. But the way things have fallen, it’s just had to happen. And I think it’s been good for me,” Maloney told AAP. After game one, NSW coach Brad Fittler admitted he was surprised Maloney hadn’t lived up to his reputation as being the larrikin of the team during their 10 days as a group. He had been advertised as such after stints at Melbourne, the Warriors, Sydney Roosters and Cronulla over his decade in the game – not once lasting more than three seasons at the same club. But when he entered Blues camp on day one, he realised something for the first time in his career. “It’s just about an understanding of the effect you have on other people. “It’s a good thing,” he said. Queensland captain Greg Inglis has described tomorrow’s mustwin State of Origin II as the biggest of his glittering Maroons career. But Inglis reckoned his team’s focus would be on another Queenslander – returning fullback Billy Slater in his landmark 30th game. Slater, 35, will become the 10th Queenslander and 11th overall to enter the 30-Origin club after overcoming a hamstring injury that forced him to pull out ahead of game one. Queensland are yet to confirm prop Dylan Napa will play, giving him until as late as the captain’s run to show he has overcome an ankle injury. Melbourne’s Tim Glasby is on standby. Ahead of his 32nd Origin, Inglis admitted he had never faced a bigger challenge than leading the Maroons into game two as Queensland try to keep the series alive. England coach Wayne Bennett has named debutants Jake Connor and Tommy Makinson in his team in tomorrow’s historic rugby league test against New Zealand in the United States. Bill will help enormously,” Inglis said. “You saw last year when they made a massive mistake on Queensland’s behalf in game one but he came back in game two and you saw the difference he made. “Bill is an exceptional player; one of a kind. Fiji coach Matt Adamson has set his team the task of beating a “vulnerable” Australia to win the next Rugby League World Cup, claiming there’s no reason why the Pacific Nation can’t do it. Adamson will lead Fiji on an interim basis for the first time in tonight’s test against Papua New Guinea, before he hopes to be appointed as the full-time replacement for Michael Potter is named in July. Man U sign Fred Manchester United have completed the signing of Brazil midfielder Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk, the Premier League club have announced. Celtic A’s unbeaten record came under threat, while Methven A and Hampstead A picked up vital wins, in an action-packed latest round of Mid Canterbury Netball’s ACL premier one competition. Heading into the penultimate games of the second round, Celtic A’s unbeaten season had them sitting pretty at the top of the table while the remaining five teams were huddled down the bottom, desperate to get more points on the board with a relegation match looming in two weeks. United A had the unenviable task of facing the Celtic A side, but produced one of their best performances of the season to really rattle the competition leaders. Only a couple of goals separated the two teams for much of the match, but Celtic A just managed to edge ahead late in the game to claim a 29-23 win – their closest margin of the season. From the outset, the game looked like a cracker. The two sides were locked at 5-all early in the piece before Celtic A landed two goals late in the quarter to lead 8-6 at quarter time, and two goals remained the margin at half-time, 12-10. Celtic A were struggling to get their goals in and United A were pouncing on any opportunities, but in the third and fourth quarters Celtic gained the smallest of edges which took them out to a five goal lead a couple of times.

United kept fighting though, reducing the gap back to two at one stage in the final quarter, but Celtic finished with a flourish thanks largely to the addition of Sala Bueta to the shooting circle. Celtic coach Angela Leadley said defence saved the day for her side, along with strong shooting from Bueta, and she was pleased her girls pulled together to survive the scare. Filly exceeding expectations The encouraging start Te Toro Pearl has made to her career has come as a pleasant surprise to Cambridge trainer Jon Miller. The daughter of Bullbars has won consecutive races and will chase a hat-trick when she steps out at the Tauranga meeting today in the Sanpellegrino 3YO Premier (1400m). “When I first got her she was nothing extraordinary, but since she trialled and had her first race the penny has really dropped,” Miller said. Te Toro Pearl was sixth on debut and then broke her maiden at New Plymouth before a follow-up success at Avondale. “I’ve tried to keep her to her own age group on these heavy tracks and this race fits in well,” Miller said. “She’s thrived after her last two runs, she’s eating well and her work has been good. She hasn’t missed a beat.” Te Toro Pearl has yet to race be-

The son of Rip Van Winkle will improve with the experience of his first race day outing at the Te Aroha meeting tomorrow in the Jadran Basketball Team 1000m, although breeder, owner and trainer Darrell Hollinshead isn’t ruling anything out. “It wouldn’t surprise me if he won, if he did everything right, but he doesn’t know a lot at this stage,” he said. “He’s very green, probably the greenest horse we’ve lined up. “He should get through the ground and we thought we’d give him a run on raceday rather than go back to the trials again.” Lord Valentine finished runner-up in his sole trial appearance at Te Awamutu last month. “He got back to last and then

came around them,” Hollinshead said. “He still hasn’t been among other horses and I think we’ll have a lot of fun with him later on. “The family don’t usually get going until they’re late threeyear-olds, apart from Te Akau Shark.” Close relation Te Akau Shark won his first two starts before finishing fourth in the Gr.1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m). Lord Valentine is out of Prickley Princess, the four-time winner being a half-sister to the Gr.1 Easter Handicap (1600m) winner Ponderosa Miss, whose brother Ecuador is a multiple Australian stakes winner and Group One placegetter. Another name in the pedigree the Hollinshead family enjoyed success with was the Gr.2 Waikato Gold Cup (2400m) winner Bak Da Chief and his stakes-performed dam Havitbak. - NZME

Keep calm, relax, says Whitelock

Last year Southern won the Watters Cup, but who will get their hands on the trophy in 2018?

Southern may head into today’s opening round of Watters Cup rugby clashes as defending champions, but they know that fact counts for little. With the Combined Country Cup competition now done, Mid Canterbury’s five senior teams head into battle for the most prestigious annual prize in Mid Canterbury Rugby circles, knowing that it’s anyone’s for the taking. Methven coach Andy Pearce said when it came down to just the local teams it was often friend versus friend, and that could have a big impact on the outcome. “Local derbys can change a lot of things. “When you’re playing against friends your decision making can go out the window a bit,” Pearce said. Methven had drawn defending champions Southern in the first round and headed into the clash without a few key players. They had four players out with injury for the next three to four weeks, one leaving on his big OE and another heading back to the UK. But they’d worked hard on blooding new players this season, knowing that depth was vital. Among those injured were first-fives Davey Maw and Jason Kjestrup. Ruben Early was seen as a future first-five at the start of the season but he needed to step up thanks to those injuries, and he’d done that, Pearce said. “I wouldn’t say we are quietly

confident, but I’m happy with the way we have been developing and working as a team,” Pearce said. “The goal is always to make the final and to win it, but we take it one week at a time now.” For Southern coach Andrew Carr, consistency was the key. He said his side had a tendency to put in a strong 60 minutes, but the other 20 minutes were hurting them. “But having said that I’m still pretty confident we will be up there and we will give it a shot, and still believe we will be good enough,” Carr said.

Winning was something that hadn’t come easy for Hampstead in recent years. It was believed to be nine years since Hampstead last won a Watters Cup game. They made the semi-finals in 2009 and two years before that

“Being realistic, if we could pick a couple of teams off we would be over the moon.” Bovey said the Hampstead team that Celtic would face on Saturday was completely different from the one they faced in round two of the combined competition. “We had three people banned when we played Celtic, from our first game, and two of them were quite powerful ball carriers for us. “We have built our squad since then and gained better and more

quality players, and we have more confidence and structure,” Bovey said. “What Celtic experienced last time will be completely different to what we will offer this time around.” Having avoided the wooden spoon in the combined competition, Bovey said the whole mood and feeling within the Hampstead camp was much lighter. “If we hadn’t got these two wins going into the Watters Cup, we wouldn’t have had belief, but now we have a couple of wins and momentum going forward,” Bovey said. “If we can pick off Celtic this weekend, the confidence it would give our boys … it’s crazy thinking what they could do.” Celtic coach Shane Enright said no team could be taken lightly in the Watters Cup, Hampstead included. “They are in better form than us. “We have to hope we train well and get our heads in the right space,” Enright said. “They are in form and any team in form is a hard team to beat.” He said Celtic were yet to produce a full 80-minute performance this season and he was hoping his players were saving their best for last. “We have just got to put 80 minutes on the paddock and hope we have no injuries and everything goes to plan,” Enright said. Meanwhile Rakaia had another week to lick their wounds after last weekend’s combined competition final loss to Waihora. They have the bye in round one of the Watters Cup competition.

Playing with a dry ball under a roof in perfect conditions has everyone within the All Blacks excited about the third test against France and captain Sam Whitelock’s biggest job tonight might be to try to curb the enthusiasm of the four new caps in particular. Shannon Frizell and Jack Goodhue will start against France in Dunedin tonight, with Richie Mo’unga and Jackson Hemopo on the bench and likely to appear in the second half. All will be extremely eager to make their mark. “The biggest challenge for any person going into a new team, especially the All Blacks, is playing their natural game. “They’ve been selected for a reason, they’re good footballers, so hopefully they just go out and play their natural game,” Whitelock said yesterday after his team’s captain’s run. “They’re so excited and enthusiastic to do well, if anything we have to tell them to relax a bit.” Frizell, starting at No.6, is likely to move to No.8 in place of Luke Whitelock in the second half, allowing fellow Highlander Hemopo to move to the blindside flank. “He just wants to get out there,” Whitelock said of 24-year-old Frizell. “He hasn’t said a lot but through his actions I can see he’s ready to go. “Playing here under the roof, everyone gets excited, no matter if it’s Super Rugby or what it is. “This week will be no different – both sides will want to play attacking rugby.” The All Blacks’ review of their performance in Wellington, a scratchy 26-13 win which clinched the series, made special mention of their lack of effectiveness at the breakdown. It is one area of improvement for tonight. “There is always cause and effect,” Whitelock said. “If that ball carrier can do the job, it makes that breakdown easier.” - NZME

Big weekend for Kiwi drivers By Erin Thompson Formula One is in France this weekend for round eight of the 2018 championship. I think I’ve kicked that dog when it’s down enough since the start of the season, so suffice to say I wish Brendon Hartley all the best this weekend in the hope of keeping Helmut Marko off his case. I’m looking forward to settling in and watching Scott Dixon this weekend. He’s back in the US after having a punt at the Le Mans 24 Hour in the Ganassi Ford GT40.

Things didn’t go too well so he’ll be keen to get back to his winning ways in the IndyCar championship at Road America. After a slow start Dixon has been in a bit of a purple patch having finished second at the IndyCar Grand Prix, third at the Indianapolis 500, a win in race one at Detroit with another win at the Texas Motor Speedway. On top of that, he won at Road America last year. The Kiwi leads the series by 19 points. For over a decade this open wheel championship has been as close as anything anywhere in the world. Dixon has

always been there, or there about, in the championship since he entered it back in 2003. He’s only finished outside the top 10 at season’s end once, and won four titles. Having spoken to a number of IndyCar drivers over the years, the one central thought is that if you want to win an IndyCar championship, you ‘have to go through Dixon’. Closer to home it’s great to see World Rally Championship Hyundai driver Hayden Paddon reunited with former long-term co-driver John Kennard. The pair are returning to where it all started for Paddon on the roads

of his youth at the Rally of South Canterbury. It’s the fourth round of the New Zealand Rally Championship (only been part of the NZRC twice, the last back in the 1980s) and 10 years since they won in an EVO8. This time around he’ll be piloting his Hyundai i20 AP4+. It’s going to be fantastic for the rest of the drivers in the field, and fans of course, to compete against and watch one of our very best rally duos in action back at home. They are the only Kiwis to have won a WRC event – Argentina in 2016, how good is that? - NZME

Café Assistant / Checkout Operator We currently have two part time positions available for friendly, customer focused applicants who understand that delivering excellent service and giving attention to detail is vital! You will be of neat and tidy appearance and physically fit, as constant standing and lifting is required. You will also be honest and reliable and have the ability to make decisions, as at times you will be required to work on your own. Experience in food handling would be an asset. Although these positions are part time, the ability to cover staff leave when required would be preferable.

Working between two large established familyrun farms with over 1400 hectares of diverse crops. Some of your responsibilities include: • Operate the Agrifac sprayer • Keep accurate records to a high level • Computer literate • Operate machinery over the different seasons (cultivation, planting, growing, harvest) • Operate harvesters (blackcurrant, onion, potato, carrots) • Be part of a team and work in with everyone involved • Maintaining modern agricultural fleet.

The majority of shift times will be Café based with some Checkout operation required. Full training will be given.

To be successful in this role you will be reliable, level headed and need strong farming knowledge, experience spraying fruit or vegetables and be able to adapt to changing situations whilst working autonomously.
