Life is going to get tougher for hard working New Zealanders, National Party leader Simon Bridges told an audience of around 300 people in Ashburton yesterday afternoon. A higher cost of living, policies that will make it harder for small to mediumsized businesses to operate, a housing market that will likely go backwards and increased government intervention in people’s everyday lives are all on their way to becoming realities under the Labour-New Zealand First Government,
Bridges told the public meeting, which is part of his Connecting with Communities regional roadshow. Fuel taxes and increased compliance and regulatory demands around areas such as housing are set to drive up the cost of living, Bridges said, and it will be ordinary New Zealanders who will pay for it. He said while a regional fuel tax for Auckland might sound like a good idea in principle, it will actually be bad for South Island motorists. That’s because there’s no way the Government can force petrol compa-
nies to pay the money they will have to pay from their Auckland operations, he said, adding that instead of the tax being recovered from Auckland, it will come from motorists in the lower North Island and the South Island. Small to medium-sized businesses that make up regional economies like that of Mid Canterbury will also be hurt by the Government’s changes to industrial relations law, Bridges said.

National leader Bridges: More pain to come From P1 Those changes included a big increase to the minimum wage and changes to the 90-day employment trial period, he said, which will make those businesses think twice about taking on new staff, resulting in more unemployment. “That’s my biggest anxiety,” he said. “That we’ll be sending more people to Australia.” Bridges said the culmination of a number of other industrial relations changes will collectively add up to the re-unionising of the New Zealand workforce, which he said would be a backward step and would get in the way of local enterprise. The world today required flexibility and that was not helped by union bureaucrats clipping the ticket but not really providing any benefits to workers. Bridges also had bad news for home owners and the housing market in general. “As of today, under this government, there will be fewer houses built than there are consents out there,” he said, basing his view on houses being worth less under a capital gains tax, which he said will happen under the current government. The spin-off from a lowering in house values was that developers will be less
likely to want to build more of them. Bridges also questioned the government’s spending priorities, saying the 125 working groups it had created since coming to power cost millions and basically just provided jobs for consultants and retired politicians in Wellington. “We have to be careful about death by quango.” He also refuted claims that infrastructure in areas like health and education was allowed to run down under nine years of a National government. Every year National was in office spending in both those areas went up, he said, which included major hospital and infrastructure building projects. The same was true in education, with many new classrooms built. The government’s regional roads policy also came under fire from Bridges, in particular its failure to support the four-laning of the State Highway between Ashburton and Christchurch, which if it had gone ahead would have been a game-changer for the region in terms of efficiency, productivity and safety, he said. Speaking after the meeting, he pledged to put it back on the agenda should national become to government in 2020.

Coeliac Disease is the condition that an estimated 495 Mid Canterbury residents have – yet likely only 20 per cent know about. But this week, Coeliac New Zealand are urging locals to wake up. The organisation’s Mid Canterbury branch are hosting a free afternoon tea today marking Coeliac Awareness Week. Organiser Heather Stewart said people will be available to answer any questions people might have about the condition, while offering an abundance of gluten free goodies from local restaurants and cafes and national sponsors – including gluten free cheerios from Netherby Meats, gluten free
WHAT IS GLUTEN? It is found in grains wheat, barley oats and rye. It is used in cooking and baking – and many prepared foods. Obvious foods that contain gluten include bread, cakes, cereal, biscuits pastry pasta, batter and breadcrumbs.
But gluten is hidden in many seasonings and processed foods such as sausages, soups, stock, sauces, gravies and dressings. Gluten content is identified on labels and packaging. More information on the disease can be found at www.coeliac.org.nz.

Stewart said she has also helped newly-diagnosed people by showing them around the supermarket or her pantry, so
they get familiar with finding the foods they need. Coeliac New Zealand also send her updates if a manufacturer has made an error and a supposedly gluten free product could contain gluten. Coeliac disease affects around 70,000 Kiwis in total. It is a genetically inherited condition which tends to affect more females than males. A number of people who don’t know they have coeliac disease can still be diagnosed with all sorts of other conditions, like irritable bowel syndrome – leaving them very ill, Stewart said. The Coeliac New Zealand afternoon tea will be held at the Ashburton Parents’ Centre from 2pm to 4pm today, and anyone is welcome to join.

Positive results keep on coming
Bars, restaurants recommit to Ashburton Alcohol Accord
The Ashburton Guardian has posted another positive result with an increase in circulation in the latest round of the ABC (Audit Bureau of Circulations) figures. It is the fourth consecutive quarter in which the Guardian has shown an increase in circulation and for the second quarter in a row they have been the only paid daily newspaper in New Zealand to show such a positive result. The news, announced yesterday, came hot on the heels of a few big weeks in which the paper was a finalist for Newspaper of the Year at the prestigious Voyager Media Awards and a massive haul of awards at last weekend’s Community Newspaper Awards Ceremony in Rotorua. Ashburton Guardian general manager, Desme Daniels said the latest round of figures was another great result for the newspaper. “Whilst every paid daily newspaper is suffering from a decrease in circulation, the Ashburton Guardian has yet again shown growth,” she said. “This is undoubtedly a reflection of the quality of the newspaper and all its associated printed products. “And our results are starting to see our industry peers asking the serious questions of how we are doing it and what our secret is.” With a circulation of around 4600 the Guardian is one of the smallest on the list of papers audited, but the positive result certainly stands out amongst a powerful crowd of mastheads. Ashburton Guardian editor, Matt Markham, said the result
was another nod of the cap towards traditional journalism. “The news world is changing, there’s no doubt about it,” he said. “We are seeing less and less importance put on good strong local news in papers around the country yet we are sticking strong to what is important to our readers while also not being afraid to roll the sleeves up and ask some of the harder questions when they need to be asked. “The recent changes by Fairfax to their news structure has been met with some criticism around the country but the fact some of their major mastheads have shown significant decreases in circulation is the real proof that they are, in some sense, getting it wrong.” Markham said the decision to take the Guardian away from feeling like a nice and fluffy community paper and not rest on any laurels when it comes to taking a harder stance on subjects has clearly been a positive move which is shown through circulation results and accolades received. “We are the small fish in the pond, but they certainly know that the little old Ashburton Guardian is there, that’s for sure.” Ashburton Guardian owner and publisher, Bruce Bell said he was proud of his entire team for another great result. “It’s been a great week; accolades at the Community Newspaper Awards and then a further increase in circulation, the only paid newspaper to do so, again. The dedication of our staff has been outstanding. I’m very proud,” he said.

If you’re thinking of misbehaving in the Blue Pub on a Friday night, be warned – you might find yourself banned from your grandmother’s birthday dinner at Cleavers Corner the next weekend. A group of 13 licensed bars and restaurants signed their recommitment to the Ashburton Alcohol Accord on Tuesday, pledging to work together to promote the safe sale and supply of alcohol and to address alcohol related issues. That includes the ability to trespass patrons from all 13 bars and restaurants if they are caught compromising the safety of one. Ashburton Alcohol Accord President Sarah Davidson said the group started in 2009, and have trespassed 67 people over the years for varying periods of time. “It’s worked really well. Currently we only have two people trespassed,” she said. The group also work together to develop guidelines around the sale and supply of alcohol to ensure all are fulfilling their responsibilities under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012, and presenting a consistent and united front to alcohol related issues. The group meet every two months, and work in conjunction with Ashburton Police, Ashburton Licensing Trust and the Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drug Service. Similar accords operate in other parts of New Zealand, but Ashburton’s accord is unique in that the licensees are the leaders. Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel and Senior Sergeant Phil Dean were also in attendance at the meeting on Wednesday. Current accord members are Ashburton Club and MSA, Devon Tavern, the Somerset Grocer, The Print Room, Hotel Ashburton, Speight’s Ale House, Braided Rivers, The Blue Pub Methven, The Brown Pub Methven, Bedrock Bar & Stonegrill, The Phat Duck, Mt Somers Tavern and Cleavers Corner.

Night gets off to great start Night number two of the Heartland Bank Primary Schools’ Music Festival on Wednesday opened with a proud National Anthem conducted by Anna Lischner, the musical director. Kerrin Corcoran then conducted the mass choir through a harmonic performance of Haere Mai, My Dad Loves His Rugby and Human. It was a brilliant way to start the show. Hampstead School, conducted by Ali Hetherington, followed the opening act. Their first song, One and a Million, was delivered with bounding enthusiasm and the choreography of We Know The Way was sharp and slick. Ashburton Borough Senior Choir, conducted by Jo Castelow, brought to the table A Disney Silly Sing Along Medley, comprising classics like Hakuna Matata, Bippity Boppity Boo
and more. A superb medley with a range of classics took the audience on a wonderful trip down memory lane. Kerrin Corcoran took to the stage for a second time to conduct the Allenton School Choir. Their first piece Titanium was brilliantly sung and What About Us had everyone in the audience humming along. The Mass Choir, this time conducted by Melanie Sloan, proceeded to wow the audience with a further three songs. Up Along The Coast was a rousing performance, as was Try Everything, which the kids all had brilliant smiles on their faces singing to. Wake Me Up had impressive layers of harmony, to which the audience was deeply impressed. Chertsey was next up, conducted by Rebecca Blyth, singing Take More Photos and The
Best Day of My Life. The choir completely owned the stage and, although they were small in number, had great enthusiasm and held their parts well. Marianne Lemmens conducted the Hinds Choir through Rona, sung with perfect timing and an exciting performance of This Is Me. Both songs were sung with huge smiles and it was a pleasure to watch The Representative Choir followed, conducted by Elaine Vallender. A gorgeous rendition of Somewhere Over The Rainbow, sung with a new twist to an old classic, with solo by Laura Bogden, was the perfect beginning for the choir. Bop Shu Wap had great harmonies and The Lion Sleeps Tonight was very polished and slick, featuring Olivia Fox with a sensational solo.
Special guest performers Phoenix Chorus took to the stage, conducted by Jo Castelow. As a member of the Chorus it was very exciting to sing again at the festival. They began with a polished No Umbrella Blues. We followed with This Is Me, with a solo from Rhianna Drye and finished with Steal Your Rock and Roll, with solos from Jack Bubb, Rhianna Drye and Erin Connelly-Whyte. For the finale, the Mass Choir took to the stage one final time, conducted by Anna Lischner, to perform Surfin’ U.S.A, Happy and We are the World. All three songs were sung t and confidently, a vistrongly brant ending performance, with all the kids looking proud and joyous. It was a brilliant way to end a spectacular evening. Two students have been excluded from school after a schoolyard attack at Ashburton College. Principal Ross Preece confirmed yesterday that after a meeting with the Board of Trustees, two students involved in the fight had been excluded and another had returned to school with conditions. Video footage of the fight was sent to NZME by a concerned parent and shows two college students throwing punches at each other while others stand around and watch. Other students get involved, launching in and punching a pupil on the ground. The footage continues for about 16 seconds before anyone steps in to stop the attack. A concerned mother, who wished to remain anonymous, said it was one of many violent attacks she knew of at the school. She believed violence had increased dramatically over the past two years. “A boy confronted a gang member after his bike had been stolen. “What started as a one-on-one fight over the stolen bike, turned into a savage beating of an innocent pupil,” she said. Preece said violence at the college seemed to be at Year 9 and 10 level. “Our students don’t like violence and if you look closely you will see a couple of lads trying to drag a mate out of the scrap, because they are aware that such incidents are treated very seriously by our board of trustees. “There is no gang problem at our school. We have a handful of students from families with gang backgrounds, out of 1200 students, and they respect our school as a place that they can get on with their learning. “None of the lads involved are gang members or are from gang households.” He confirmed the fight was over a stolen bike. Ministry of Education deputy secretary Katrina Casey said this week that it had spoken to the principal and was satisfied the school was taking this matter seriously and had appropriate systems in place. -NZME

It’s a girl for PM given she is the first child born to a female New Zealand Prime Minister, in power, in our country’s history. It is thought Ardern may be the only current female world leader to now have a young child. Although this is a first for New Zealand, Ardern is not the first woman in power in recent times to give birth while running a country. Former Pakistan PM Benazir Bhutto gave birth to daughter Bakhtawar on January 25, 1990, while she was in office. In mid-January, Ardern shocked the country when she announced, via social media, that she was expecting. There was great support from the New Zealand public, political colleagues and from fans around the world. Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull was one of the first international leaders to tweet about the news. “Congratulations Jacinda Ardern on your wonderful news today. When we spoke this morning you sounded more excited than you did when you won the election!” Former New Zealand prime ministers also came out in support, with Jenny Shipley and Helen Clark offering congratulatory messages. - NZME
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has given birth to New Zealand’s First Baby, a 3.31kg baby girl. “Welcome to our village wee one,” Ardern wrote on Instagram at 6.15pm yesterday. The little girl – whose name has yet to be announced – was born at 4.45pm. “Thank you so much for your best wishes and your kindness. We’re all doing really well thanks to the wonderful team at Auckland City Hospital.” Ardern, 37, posted a photo of the baby, alongside herself and partner Clarke Gayford. “I’m sure we’re going through all of the emotions new parents go through, but at the same time feeling so grateful for all the kindness and best wishes from so many people. Thank you,” Jacinda Ardern said. Both mum and the baby are doing well. The New Zealand Labour party have also congratulated the couple posting, “welcome to the team” on Instagram. The Prime Minister’s office will announce later when the family is due to leave hospital. Andrew Little has welcomed the baby by posting a video of him wearing a party hat, dancing and waving a sign saying “congrats”. The child’s birth is significant;

Methven Primary School students combatted a chilly Thursday morning by tucking into hot chocolates and bacon, and celebrating the warm-hearted folks within their community. Fonterra shouted breakfast for the school, along with other local community groups as part of their ongoing Grass Roots programme. The breakfast was a chance to highlight the positive efforts of the Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade – who are currently working to distribute free smoke alarms around the community, and the Salvation Army – who helped dish up food at the event. The Fonterra Grass Roots Fund itself provides resourcing for a number of schools and groups around the country, and has donated hi-vis vests to Methven Primary School for all students to use on the school bus, acting principal Sue Furndorfler said. She said it had been a fun morning, with some guests also partaking in a race around the school scooter track. TVNZ Breakfast Host Matty McLean broadcast live from the event, and students said they were very excited about the chance to be on live TV. The Fonterra Grass Roots Fund invites community groups to apply for grants of $500 to $5000. Since the fund began, over 2500 grants have been provided to school groups, educational groups, charitable trusts, sports clubs and local emergency services around the country.

U-turn welcomed The Government has welcomed a U-turn by the United States on its controversial policy of separating children from their parents at the US-Mexico border. “Separating families at the southern border was concerning to many New Zealanders. New Zealand Cabinet Ministers and MPs were concerned as well,” Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters said yesterday. “The coalition Government conveyed its concerns to the US Embassy in Wellington yesterday afternoon,” he said. Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade officials phoned embassy officials to relay the Government’s views. “The practice of separating children from their parents and detaining them was simply not a humanitarian approach and any reversal of that practice should be welcomed,” Peters said in a statement. US President Donald Trump signed an executive order yesterday ending the policy which sparked a backlash after images of distressed children being separated from their parents after illegally crossing into the United States appeared in the media. Following a meeting of Republican politicians, Trump said it was important to be strong on border security. “The Republicans want security, and insist on security for our country. “And we will have that at the same time we have compassion, we want to keep families together. “It’s very important. “I’ll be signing something in a little while that’s going to do that,” he said, according to a transcript of his comments. Under the policy, adults were

draw from the United Nations all together. A former contender for the role of UN Secretary-General, Clark said the withdrawal of the US from the Human Rights Council was “a very, very significant step”. Clark said no one was lily white. The US on the council had rightly raised issues about authoritarian regimes but “it also needs to be conscious of the rights of small children being ripped away from their parents”. - NZME

Perry announced this week that German DJ, Zedd, will be joining her for her two Auckland shows on August 20 and 21. Zedd announced his arrival on the electronic music scene with the hit song Clarity. He has since accumulated multiple platinum records and a Grammy award. Perry’s shows that have been touring through the UK and Europe have already been described as quite the spectacle.

In my opinion, strawberries, like many fruit and veg, just seem to taste juicier and better when you’ve grown them yourself. So, every winter I like to ensure we have a good strawberry patch set up to enjoy in summer. Sometimes that means creating a whole new strawberry patch and other years I just top up my existing patch with new plants. This year at Awapuni Nurseries we have three varieties of strawberries available to order. All three (Chandler, Camerosa and Ventana) are what we would describe as good home-garden varieties that produce sweet, medium-sized fruit but the Ventana strawberries have more of a conical shape to them. Some gardeners like specific varieties, but if you’re starting out and have no preference we would recommend any of these varieties. You can order your strawberry seedlings from www.awapuni.co.nz. Each regularsized bundle has around four plants which should produce between 60 to 100 strawberries come Christmas. I recommend planting as many strawberry plants as you can fit – I don’t think you can ever have too many strawberries!

When you’ve found just the right spot or spots, prepare the soil by digging in a general fertiliser that’s rich in potassium. Something like Tui Strawberry Food already has the extra potassium – this will help stimulate plant growth and big, juicy fruit. If you’re planting in a pot or hanging basket, use a good potting mix and an extra boost of liquid fertiliser or again just use one of the Tui strawberry products. Before planting in the garden raise your bed by mounding the soil. This will encourage circulation, drainage and can add depth to shallow soil. Plant your seedlings around the edges of your garden or pots to encourage the strawberries to hang over the sides and prevent the fruit from touching the ground and rotting. Dig a hole 10cm deep and place the seedling inside. A deep hole is required to give the roots plenty of room to spread out and grow but be careful not to bury the plant. Pack the soil firmly around each seedling and surround with peastraw or newspaper to help keep away weeds. Place netting or wire over your plants when they begin to produce fruit. This will block out birds and ensure you get to eat the strawberries yourself. In spring, add another dose of general fertiliser or Tui Strawberry Food to your strawberries to encourage sturdier plants that are more disease resistant heading in to the warmer months. Come Christmas you'll be able to put your strawberries to the test and decide for yourself whether home-grown really does taste better. And remember your strawberry plants will be most productive in their second year.

Dispensing with subtleties H arley-Davidson always has mid-year models of interest, and the 2018 HarleyDavidson Forty-Eight Special definitely fits that category. Part of the popular Sportster platform, which now includes the all-new Iron 1200, the Forty-Eight Special redefines the lowbar cruiser it is based on. While this motorcycle is closely related to the Sportster Forty-Eight, the 2018 Harley-Davidson Forty-Eight Special is definitely its own motorcycle. Yes, it shares many major components with the standard Forty-Eight, but with Harley-Davidsons, the magic is in the details. Rather than narrow flat bars, the FortyEight Special gets Tallboy handlebars. The Tallboy bars put your fists up with a 7.25-inch rise, and the fairly flat bend gives the Forty-Eight Special an aggressive custom look. While the standard Forty-Eight is intended to evoke the 1940s, the Forty-Eight Special has a 1970s vibe. The graphic treatment on the 2.2-gallon peanut tank pays homage to the notorious AMF era that isn’t the least bit subtle. Black may be a popular colour scheme, but the Forty-Eight Special proudly flaunts its chrome. Yes, there are black cylinders on the familiar Evolution 1200 engine, but the pushrod tubes, lower rocker boxes, and tappet covers set that off nicely with chrome. In contrast to the black air filter box on the intake side, the Forty-Eight Special
has chrome shields for the black exhaust system. Michelin Scorcher tires are mounted on black aluminum rims. The 9-spoke design uses split spokes, and a Michelin Scorcher 31 is up front and a Scorcher 11T on the rear. They are both fat 16-inchers.
The suspension is high spec for a Sportster. Like the Forty-Eight, the Forty-Eight Special gets a 49mm fork grasped by a hefty triple clamp. Inside that fork is cartridge damping for impressive performance. In common with the Sportster FortyEight, the Forty-Eight Special has forward
controls and a resolute solo seat. Harley-Davidson has set a goal of 100 new models by 2027. The 2018 Harley-Davidson Forty-Eight Special isn’t an all-new bike, but it does put them one model closer to their goal in style.

Ford’s finest hour
E
veryone knows about Ford’s intense war with Ferrari in the 1960s, and how it crescendoed at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans with a (now iconic) blue-oval whitewash of the top three. Less well versed is the huge influence from New Zealanders there was on that podium. The winning car was driven by two of them; Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon (you may have heard of them), while Denny Hulme – Aotearoa’s only Formula 1 world champion – finished second with co-driver Ken Miles of the UK. Miles and Hulme had dominated much of the race, but were told in the late stages to slow for a formation finish, and that ultimately led to the all-Kiwi GT40 (dressed in black and white) to cross the line first in controversial fashion. Not that Ford gave a rats about which driver finished where; all they’d cared about was thrashing Ferrari. The third of those GT40 MkIIs was driven by two American drivers; Ronnie Bucknum and Dick Hutcherson. They finished 12 laps down, but still played a key role in the fight with their Holman & Moody-campaigned Ford. Though Bucknum and Hutcherson have since passed away, their car lives on, and now it’s set to come up for sale at RM Sotheby’s August sale at Pebble Beach, Monterey, California. Price? In the ballpark of $9-12 million US dollars, or $NZ13-17 million. According to the auction house, this is the exact chassis that claimed the thirdplaced finish - P/1016. It’s been restored to racing spec and decoration, including that fabulous and uniquely ‘60s pink and gold livery. There’s a few interesting sidenotes, when it comes to chassis P/1016.
It’s the only GT40 to take on the competition equipped with an automatic transmission. And it also only raced three more times before being retired from competition. These races included two performances at the 24 Hours Daytona Continental, and a return to Le Mans in 1967. From there it had a deservedly sedate
life, jetted around the world to various car shows including the Goodwood Festival of Speed and Pebble Beach. “The sale of this GT40 represents a real chance for any collector or motorsport enthusiast to own a significant piece of history,” says RM Sotheby’s Alexander Weaver. “This Ford has been restored to the
condition it raced in, which will be a vital consideration for any prospective buyer. “Few cars can be considered gold standard, but this GT40 is, and will always be remembered as one of the Fords that finally beat Ferrari.” Should any Kiwi readers want to have a crack at bidding on this beautiful thing, it goes under the hammer on August 24–25.

eugeot has launched an integrated car and electric bike mobility solution, the all-new Peugeot 5008 SUV and the eF01 Electric Bike. In the UK, 36 per cent of UK motorists commute to work, but parking challenges mean that many may still have to find another mode of travel to complete the ‘last mile’ to their workplace. The issue is even more of a problem in London, with 46 per cent of the capital’s drivers concerned about parking. Peugeot’s unique, fold-away electric bike integrates neatly into the boot space of the all-new 5008 SUV with a mobile charging dock, giving commuters an onboard solution to conquer the final part of their journey. ack in March, Ford New Zealand confirmed that the Mustang GT Bullitt (a modern day tribute to Steve McQueen’s on-screen sidekick in the ‘70s film of the same name) would be coming here by the end of the year. Now, they’ve confirmed even more details. In a new release, Ford have said that only 50 of the staunch rear-wheel drive coupes would be coming here – the first of them landing in October. Ford have also confirmed price; a starting RRP of $93,490. That might sound a fair whack more than the $79,990 GT V8 base price, but consider too the limited numbers. Of that 50 coming to New Zealand, 30 of them have already been sold. What makes a Bullitt Mustang a Bullitt? Well – apart from visual changes including new 19-inch Torq Thrust wheels, revised front fascia, aero kit, badging, and signature ‘Dark Highland Green’ and ‘Shadow Black’ colourways – the biggest upgrade is power. Ford have squeezed 6kW more out of their Coyote 5.0-litre V8. It now develops 345kW and 566Nm of torque, which helps it hit a top speed of 262km/h (12km/h more than the standard GT). And this makes it the most powerful Mustang that Ford NZ sells here.

A
fter a six-month preparation and development programme, a race-ready Bentley Bentayga is in Colorado and ready to take on the 96th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb this weekend. Along the exceptionally challenging 12.42-mile course, which features 156 corners and a 4720 ft climb, the Bentayga will have to average a minimum of 60 mph to achieve its target – to claim the outright Production SUV record. Tackling the challenge will be two-time overall Pikes Peak champion Rhys Millen, whose race team has been working tirelessly with Bentley Motorsport this year to prepare the car for The Race to The Clouds. The combination of 600 bhp engine, adaptive air suspension and 48V electric active anti-roll control makes the Bentayga the perfect challenger for the SUV record. As a competitor in the Production class, minimal changes have been permitted. The car features a roll cage, fire suppression system and racing seat, plus new tyres selected from Pirelli’s DOT-marked range. Around 300 kg of interior trim has been temporarily removed for the event as stipulated by the rules, but in all other respects the Bentayga is a standard W12powered production car. A sports exhaust from Akrapovic completes the specification of the car, which is finished in eye-catching Radium Satin paintwork and Bentley’s Styling Specification kit – adding a carbon fibre front splitter, diffuser, side skirts and aerodynamic rear spoiler. Bentley’s Director of Motorsport, Brian Gush, comments: “Our preparation for the event has been extremely thorough, and our Bentley Motorsport race engineers have produced
a car that demonstrates the Bentayga’s inherent potential to the full. “It’s now up to Rhys to drive the best run possible – but after his performances in testing, we have every confidence in him. “The weather is the one factor we can’t control so we’re hoping for a clear Sunday morning.” Driver Rhys Millen comments: “We’ve honed the Bentayga’s incredible abilities and ensured we have a car for Pikes Peak that’s both safe and fast through two very productive test sessions with the Bentley Motorsport team. “The course is one you can only attack with a car that can gain and lose speed very quickly, because it’s so tight and twisty. “The combination of 600 bhp, 664 lb ft (900
Nm) and carbon ceramic brakes means that the Bentayga can accelerate and decelerate incredibly hard – and that’s what I’ll be counting on for my run. “I can’t wait to get started at the mountain later this week.” For this unique challenge of performance, speed and precision, Bentley has again partnered with Mobil 1, who provide engine oils for the Bentley range.

Graeme Wilson believes there are at least 100 wax-eyes waiting not-so-patiently to eat them out of house and home! The ultimate beef burger Serves 4
Cucumber Tomatoes Caramelised onions Tomato relish or use your favourite relish ■ Preheat the oven to 180°C. Line a shallow oven tray with baking paper. ■ Beef: Mix all the beef ingredients together in a bowl and season. Form into 4 large patties and rub each with a little olive oil. ■ Heat a large frying pan until hot
and brown patties for about 2 minutes on each side. ■ Transfer to the tray and place in the oven to cook for 8-10 minutes until cooked in the centre. ■ Caramelised onions: Heat a dash of oil in a heavy-based saucepan over low heat and add the onions, sugar and salt. Cook gently for about 30 minutes or until the onions are soft, stirring from time to time. Add the thyme and red wine vinegar and cook for a further 5 minutes. ■ To serve: Slice the buns in half horizontally and oven grill cut sides, if wished. Top each bun base with mayonnaise, lettuce, cucumber strips, beef patty, tomato, onion and tomato relish. Finish with bun tops that you have spread with mayonnaise. We will report without fear, favour E
vents at Ashburton College earlier this week have certainly poked the tiger in some corners of the district. A nationally viewed video of a nasty and violent incident at the school, the second of its kind in recent memory, emerged and all of a sudden, this sleepy little district was the subject of everyone’s attention, wanted or not. The video was the lead story on the New Zealand Herald website for a good portion of the morning and was picked up by other major newspapers like the Otago Daily Times during the course of the day. It was only natural then that the same story was going to be of huge prominence in the daily newspaper of the same district where the incident occurred.
But it has since been questioned whether or not we should have – and other articles and opinions written and shared on the subject have been met with the same disdain from some sections. One of our mottos here at the Guardian is that we will report without fear, or favour. If there’s a serious issue going on in this district, we are going to write about it. Yes, not everyone is going to
be happy about that fact, but then again there are a number of people who are just as happy to read about such topical issues. The main concerns around our coverage of the incident earlier this week seem to rest around the editorial comment which ran on this very page on the same day that the story filled the front page and a letter to the editor which was published on Wednesday, speaking of a former student’s experiences anonymously. That editorial was never written with the intent of damaging the Ashburton College name, yet it would appear that is how it has been received. To the point where a public invitation is to be issued via
a radio interview this morning to myself to spend a day at Ashburton College to try and learn just how well the school is progressing and to see all the great things that they are doing. The only problem? It’s already clearly evident all the great things that are being done at the school because we try and detail as many of them as we possibly can. And conversations with staff, students and parents every week confirm that. But whether or not that was happening was never the issue in the first place. The entire premise of the editorial comment on that day was to highlight that we, as a society, have a glaringly obvious issue with violence and bullying
in our schools. Not to single out one school in particular, but to open the discussion lines around such things. In a perfect world we wouldn’t have to detail and offer comment on such issues because they wouldn’t exist – but unfortunately, we aren’t living in a perfect world. So that means every now and then we are going to write about subjects that are negative and subjects that will strike at the very core of some individuals and as much as we can sympathise in almost every instant, our approach must be to report without fear or favour. And so, that’s what we shall continue to do.

love the way Mid Canterbury people jump on a cause to help others. The Guardian ran a story about the local foodbank having some empty shelves due to winter biting. Not only just winter biting I’d suggest, there’s a lot of people sailing pretty close to the wind at the moment. I’m lucky to be in a position to be able to facilitate some help and started auctioning some goodies from the prize cupboard at Hokonui. The response was awesome and pretty soon we had hundreds of food items on their way into the studio. Those auctions were boosted by a phone call from New World Ashburton, who said come on over and fill up a trolley with what you need and we will pay for it. $330 worth of groceries later we left the store with big grins on our faces. Several other local businesses got in touch and said we can help out. Pretty soon we were delivering over $500 worth of food to the foodbank. But we could hardly leave it there could we. There was still space on the shelves for more food. So we came up with the idea of challenging all local businesses to pop up the stairs to Hokonui with some food and in return we’d put them in the draw to win

There’s no way either of us would have supported a fundraiser, the other was running. Helping out ‘the competition’, pfft, no chance. It’s great to see us working together for the greater good!

We are hoping to have all donations in by lunchtime today and looking at the pile that had amassed as of 11am yesterday we will need a van or small truck to ship the tucker to the foodbank. Technology for all its downsides (cellphones should be banned from schools is next week’s column), has been a huge help with this food drive. Without all the auctions on Facebook, that had people bidding with cans of food to win Event Centre show tickets, ski passes, beauty vouchers, books, food and more, this beast wouldn’t have grown as big as it has. I have also sent messages to a heap of people who are in busi-
ness in town asking (not bullying) for their support. It is a quick and effective way of spreading POSITIVE news. To all the businesses, big and small, plus all the other wonderful people who have helped put the food mountains together, thank you so much! Thousands of new homes Fletcher Building’s house construction business will develop a new Auckland house-panel factory to make thousands of new residences, some for the Government’s KiwiBuild. Ross Taylor, chief executive, said in Sydney yesterlday morning that plans for the new venture were advancing. “The factory will be built in Auckland. “We’ve not chosen a site yet. We are already able to make KiwiBuild-style housing so we can respond to that,” he said of the Government plan to build 100,000 affordable homes during a decade. “Fletcher Living has developed a panelised solution that reduces duplex construction times from 22 weeks to nine weeks,” a new presentation out yesterday said. “The new market offer will reduce construction time, improve cost control around skilled trades, reduce defects and waste in a controlled factory environment and improve safety outcomes,” the statement said. Taylor said components for 300 to 350 homes could be built in the new factory annually. The business is building more than 1000 homes annually, he said. But Taylor refused to reveal more on big loss-making commercial construction contracts. “We are in confidentiality agreements with our customers so we’re seeing them ... how we described them in February.” - NZME
Budget coach services ManaBus and Naked Bus have confirmed that they will cease operations in July. The companies are part of InMotion Group. A spokeswoman said that the decision to end the budget bus operations was in order to focus more exclusively on the company’s ferry services. - NZME
Shooting for a million Xero is confident of tripling its UK customer base in the next few years, saying the compulsory digitisation of tax returns is providing a tailwind to its rapid pace of growth in the world’s fifth-biggest economy. The ad agency declared New Zealand’s most effective in the country at last year’s Effie Awards has let go 20 of its staff. Aucklandbased FCB, one of the biggest ad agencies in the country, made the announcement about the job cuts internally to staff last week. Trump making his mark
I
t was a mixed week for global markets after President Donald Trump threatened to impose a 10 per cent tariff on $200 billion of Chinese imports, a tit-for-tat move as the two nations move closer towards a potential trade war. Trump recently ordered tariffs on US$50 billion in Chinese goods in retaliation for intellectual property theft. The tariffs were met by China which frustrated the President. The statement caused markets to tumble on Tuesday, however they managed to find strength later on in the week. The trade confrontation puts the world’s two largest economies against each other and could disrupt global supply chains for the tech and auto industries, sectors heavily reliant on outsourced components. Trump’s threats sent global markets downhill and weakened both the US dollar and Chinese yuan. The Dow Jones tumbled, erasing all of its gains for the year. Closer to home, the New Zealand dollar rose to a six-week high against the Australian dollar on expectations that the Australian economy will be hit harder if China’s growth slows. Meanwhile, New Zealand’s gross domestic product rose 0.5 per cent in the March quarter, following a 0.6 per cent increase in the December quarter, with growth in service industries more than offsetting a fall in construction activity. in the March quarter, following a 2.8 per cent fall last quarter. A rebound in milk production contributed to the rise, thanks to improved weather conditions. Annual GDP growth for the year ending March was 2.7 per cent and the size of the economy in current prices was $286 billion. Global dairy prices continued to fall this week after the Global Dairy Trade auction index fell 1.2 per cent from its previous auction two weeks ago. Key product group, whole milk powder, slipped 1.0 per cent while skim milk powder declined by 1.1 per cent. The only two groups to see an increase in price was lactose which rose by 8.2 per cent and butter gaining 0.8 per cent. In corporate news, Fletcher Building confirmed its strategy to improve its financial and operating performance. The company is restructuring to cut costs of $30 million a year, as well as instigating an executive shakeup. Its strategy is to focus on a simpler and leaner operating model. Pushpay completed a bookbuild for Eliot Crowther’s $100 million sell down after the cofounder sold his 9.03 per cent stake in the company.
The company reiterated its revenue guidance of US$20.5-22.0m for the quarter ending June. Manuka honey producer Comvita bought a 20 per cent stake in Uruguay’s Apiter for US$6.25 million to secure propolis supplies. In April the company downgraded its earnings forecast from $17.1 million to $8-11 million after poor weather hampered honey production. At the same time, it announced it was in talks with an unnamed third party for a potential takeover. However the deal fell through after the two parties couldn’t agree on a price. Gentrack entered into an agreement to acquire Evolve Parent Ltd and Evolve Analytics Ltd, a market leading provider of energy data analysis software in the UK, for an enterprise value of £23m ($44.2m). Evolve specialises in the identification and correction of settlement billing errors as well as the accuracy of standing data. Synlait confirmed its manufacturing site in Pokeno will be commissioned for the 2019/2020 season. Initially, Synlait’s Pokeno site will produce infant-grade ingredients while regulatory registration is obtained for infant formula base powder production. Art Deco targets Classic Allan Sharrock only needs to think back 12 months to gain all the confidence he needs going into tomorrow’s Listed Woburn Farm Tauranga Classic (1400m). The New Plymouth trainer had contemplated lining up his emerging winter star Art Deco in the weight-for-age fillies and mares features against the topbilling pair of Underthemoonlight and New York Minute after two third placings at her lead-up runs, one of them beating home New York Minute. However, he took the easier option of tackling the Rating 85 sprint and was left wondering if he had made the right choice. The Road To Rock mare cruised to a 3 3/4-length victory, clocking 38.16 seconds for her final 600m split, a sectional that ranked favourably alongside Underthemoonlight’s last 600m of 39.51 in winning the Tauranga Classic. “I did think about it and I talked to [co-owner] Bill Gleeson about it but she would have been out of her grade, racing those mares on level weights and we felt it wasn’t the right thing to do,” Sharrock said. “She won in her grade and ran a quicker last sectional, albeit she was at 1200m and they went 1400m. “We’ll see how she measures up this year. “She’s a bloody good mare and we’re positive she can run well.” With Underthemoonlight and New York Minute returning for Saturday’s Tauranga Classic and both presenting at the top of their game, Art Deco is facing just as stern a task as she would have last year. Last-start Listed Rotorua Stakes winner Tomelilla and stablemate Deals In Heels, who went within a whisker of beating Underthemoonlight at Te Rapa a fortnight ago, add to the depth of
Group One performer Prince Of Passion is likely to do his future racing across the Tasman. The Thorndon Mile (1600m) runner-up will shortly return to the Cambridge stable of Jon Miller before joining an as yet unconfirmed Australian trainer. But don’t expect to see champion driver Tony Herlihy back at Alexandra Park tonight or any time in the next month. Herlihy resumed driving fast work at his South Auckland training establishment this week, over five weeks after a race smash at Alexandra Park left him with ribs broken in a particularly nasty place. longer than last time I had a similar injury, but it is good to be back driving fast work,” he said. “But I am not going to rush back into race driving. “I am going on holiday in a few weeks and I’d rather give the injured ribs that extra time to recover. “So I probably won’t be back driving on racenight for another three or even four weeks.” That will see his stable’s young reinsmen Tony Cameron and junior Luke Whittaker do the majority of his driving at what is admittedly a quieter time of the season. But Herlihy still has some major winter goals with juvenile trotter Tickle Me Pink, who is being set for an Australian campaign.

which she is eligible for. “So she might also go to the Redwood at Maryborough before that and could even contest her Breeders Crown heat over there in Victoria depending on how the timing works out.” Herlihy’s stable star Temporale has also rejoined the stable after a huge season which saw him win the National Trot and finish second in two of Australia’s biggest races. That form plateaued toward the end of the season, but Temporale raced like a horse still growing into his big frame and could be even better next season. “He looks like he has put a bit of muscle on and all going well we will give him a shot at Cup week in Christchurch this time in.” - HRNZ
James McDonald has capped his international comeback with victory aboard Expert Eye in the Gr.3 Jersey Stakes (1400m) at Royal Ascot. Ardossan returning Exciting colt Ardossan is on target for a return to black type action. The Redoute’s Choice colt, who was unbeaten in New Zealand, is expected to resume in the Gr.3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on July 28. Ardossan began his career with Cambridge trainer Stephen Marsh and won both of his starts, including success in the Listed Waikato Equine Veterinary Centre Stakes (1100m), before he transferred to Mick Price’s Caulfield stable. Mutarakem racked up a record 170th Sydney metropolitan win of the season for the ex-patriate New Zealand trainer and, fittingly, Hugh Bowman was in the saddle. Mutarakem’s triumph does not compare with the achievements of his champion stablemate Winx, but Waller insisted the win was just as cherished after eclipsing his previous season best set in 2015-16. “Whether it’s a midweek or a big Group One we still get the same kick out of it this far into the season,” Waller said. “There’s always something to look forward to when you’ve got a big stable, whether it’s an up-andcoming horse or Winx.” - NZME

A new young crop of future rugby stars came together this week for their first official training as a Mid Canterbury squad. New Mid Canterbury rugby coach Sean Carter named a squad of 27 players at the weekend as they looked ahead to an annual clash against Ellesmere on July 3 and it was full of fresh, new faces. “I think out of the 27 there are only nine guys that have actually played Heartland rugby before. “So it’s a great opportunity for them, and the coaching group is really excited about it because it’s a challenge for us too,” Carter said. Among the surprises was the inclusion of a 19-year-old who had been plying his trade for the Mt Somers senior Bs this season. Finn Cleary had come to Mid Canterbury from Wanganui and had been playing lock for Mt Somers, but he was also comfortable in the front row and Carter saw him as a loose forward for Mid Canterbury. “I saw him playing against the Rakaia div two team when I was having a look at a boy who was playing for the Rakaia colts, and he was just one of those players who really stood out,” Carter said. “I looked at him and thought, ‘yeah, that’s a kid I can really work with’.” He said Cleary had passion and a desire to be better and he had potential to be a great asset to Mid Canterbury moving forward. Carter said he was committed to looking at those within the district and giving them the opportunity and tools to upskill, so the initial Mid Canterbury squad was made up entirely of Mid Canterbury-based players. “It’s an opportunity that they may not have had in the past and may not get in the future, but these are the guys who are performing really well at club level,” Carter said. A wider training group had been getting together for regular training sessions in recent weeks,

Carter said that was part of the reason why Koroitamana hadn’t been considered at this point, while it was a similar story for Caucau, who had been given a few things to work on by the new Mid Canterbury coaching team. Southern may have been the defending Watters Cup champions, and only narrowly missed out on this year’s combined competition finals, but they’d only had one player included in the initial Mid Canterbury squad. That player was Southern captain Eric Duff, with some of his team-mates among those who had made themselves unavailable. Hampstead also had one player in the squad – front rower Mathew Iakapo.
Carter said the fact Hampstead had won their last two games of the combined competition was good for Mid Canterbury Rugby. “We need teams to be competitive and we need clubs to be able to put teams out on the park week in and week out, and Hampstead have done that,” Carter said. Celtic was the other big provider to the team, with eight players named in the squad for the Ellesmere game. Mid Canterbury and Ellesmere played each other every season and the game was a key part of Mid Canterbury’s build up to the Heartland Championship, which would kick off on August 25 with Mid Canterbury away to Horowhenua-Kapiti in Foxton. The Mid Canterbury versus Ellesmere game would be played in Ashburton on July 3.

Shannon Frizell
Tongan-born Shannon Frizell (24) moved to Nelson after signing a development contract with the Tasman Rugby Union back in 2015. Frizell represented New Zealand Marist at Under 19 level and also played for the Tasman sevens team before making his provincial debut for Tasman in 2016 with a blockbuster 2017 Mako season. But it wasn’t until Frizell, who
stands tall at 1.95m, earned a contract with the Highlanders that his name cropped up on the Super Rugby circuit. His dynamic rugby skills, which were on full display when he scored three tries in the Highlanders win over the Blues in round 10 of Super Rugby.
Jackson Hemopo
Since making his debut for the Highlanders in 2015, Jackson Hemopo has impressed selectors with his outstanding form. Hemopo was a member of the 2013 New Zealand Under 20 side and played for Otago between 2013-2015 before signing a deal to return to Manawatu in 2016 where
he has continued to develop ever since. The 24-year-old lock/loose forward was selected for the Maori All Blacks for their Northern Tour last year on the back of a very impressive provincial season with Manawatu. Standing at 1.93m, Hemopo has since continued to prove his skill with the Highlanders.
Jack Goodhue
Jack Goodhue, 23-year-old centre, made his first appearance in 2014 after joining the Canterbury squad for the ITM Cup. Goodhue made five appearances and scored two tries but a concussion ended his season prema-
turely. And after starting the first two games of the following season, ACL and MCL knee injuries ruled him out for almost a year. Goodhue was back on the field in 2016 before being promoted to the full Crusaders squad for 2017. Goodhue almost made his All Blacks debut last season when he was included as an injury cover for Ryan Crotty in the All Blacks for the Pasifika Challenge against Samoa and three-test series against the British and Irish Lions.
Richie Mo’unga
The dynamic Crusaders and Canterbury first five-eighth, Richie Mo’unga, first made his
Super Rugby debut playing for the Crusaders in the 2016 season. Starting all 16 matches and starring in their Super Rugby-winning campaign in 2017, Mo’unga was the leading points scorer, scoring 160 in just 10 games for Canterbury. Mo’unga was called to join the squad as injury cover for the third Bledisloe Cup test last year. The 24-year-old then played for the Barbarians that faced the All Blacks during the Northern Tour, scoring the game’s opening try, before joining the All Blacks squad and making his debut off the bench against the French XV. - NMZE

A dream start and strong finish led Ashburton College’s senior boys’ basketball team to a valuable 82-76 win in Canterbury secondary school basketball’s Thomson Trophy on Tuesday night. Up against a strong St Thomas’ College side, Ashburton College were able to get their fast break game going and score easy layups early, running their offence efficiently and freeing up the outside guards who in turn were accurate from the perimeter. The first two quarters were all Ashburton and heading into the third quarter with a 27-point lead, they were well and truly in the box seat. “Basketball however can turn pretty quickly,” coach Brian Kerr said. A string of accurate threepointers by St Thomas cut into the College lead and halfway through the final quarter St
Thomas had drawn level at 66-all. “An important steal by Sam Pearce to score a lay-up and a big three pointer from Fotu Hala gave Ashburton College the impetus and more importantly a seven-point lead,” Kerr said. “St Thomas had to resort to fouling to put college onto the free throw line to stop the clock, and hopefully for college to miss from the line.” But Ashburton College converted enough free throws to maintain the lead and run out winners 82-76. Kerr said with a 27-point lead at half time, his side should have run out easy winners. “However we’d played St Thomas earlier in the season and they had put 20 points on us so I knew they were very capable. “They fired for about nine minutes of the entire game and nearly took it away from us,” Kerr said. “In saying that, I’m proud of how the boys responded and
Marc Juntilla fought out that last five minutes as we were struggling. “The key was keeping calm and the fact that individuals stepped
up with important plays when it mattered.” Quinn Ritchie led the way in scoring 25 points and was busy all night, combining well with Marc Juntilla (18 points) and Pearce (5 points). Hala was big on the boards against bigger opponents and contributed 25 points as well, with 11 points coming in the final quarter. “Harry Jackson was also solid on the boards as he helped even out the rebounding struggle,” Kerr said. “Young Riley Sa was again in the thick of the defensive arena and pulled down a couple of big rebounds in the last minutes of the fourth quarter.” In the girls’ Whelan Trophy competition, Ashburton College’s girls didn’t play this week. They’re back on court next week against Rangiora High School. Next week the Ashburton boys play Riccarton High School.

Blues set to seize the moment By scoTT BailEy NSW’s attacking middle are ready to seize the moment and take whatever limited chances Queensland offer them in State of Origin II at ANZ Stadium. The Blues’ attacking prowess up the centre was the difference in the series opener, as fullback James Tedesco and hooker Damien Cook played the games of their lives in the 22-12 win. But Queensland have shown time and time again throughout their 12-year reign that they are quick learners. Never was that clearer than last year when Andrew Fifita ran 50 more metres in game one than he did in the following two games combined. And the pair are aware the Maroons won’t present them with as many chances as they try to win just their second series in 12 years. “I don’t think those opportunities will be as big as they were in game one,” Tedesco admitted. “Obviously, they will tighten up their defence in the middle and know that’s where we’re coming. “With (Billy) Slater coming back and other players coming in, obviously they must win so it’s a big game for us.” Not that he is concerned. After he broke through 13 tackles in the series opener, Tedesco spoke about the importance of backing himself more than in previous Origin encounters. And with that in mind, he’s not concerned about the Maroons’ efforts to try to shut him down.

Langer cracks whip By Ian Mccullough Coach Justin Langer has warned Australia’s struggling bowlers they need to quickly get to grips with international cricket. The world champions arrived in Durham yesterday ahead of the fourth ODI against England having already surrendered the five-match series after Tuesday’s record 242-run defeat at Trent Bridge. England clubbed a world record 6-481 against an inexperienced attack with Andrew Tye being the biggest victim of the onslaught, conceding 100 runs from just nine overs. The 31-year-old is only the second Australian bowler to concede a century in a one-day international. The West Australian finished with figures of 0-100 – the worst by an Australian in an ODI since Mick Lewis went for 0-113 in South Africa’s famous victory in Johannesburg in 2006. Tye has taken 2-181 in his last 18 overs of international cricket and, although Langer believes he can bounce back, the newlyappointed coach has warned him he needs to improve fast. “He’s probably one of the best people I have ever met in the game of cricket,” Langer said. “He’ll stay up but what I’ve said to him, like our batters, he’s got to learn how to
bowl at the first 10 overs, the second 10 overs and at the death.” While the bowlers bore the brunt of the criticism Langer was also frustrated by the batsman’s inability to see out 50 overs for a third successive match. Shaun Marsh is the one player to score a century for the 2015 World Cup winners with only Travis Head and Glenn Maxwell joining him in passing 50. While Langer admitted chasing down the English total was always going to be a huge task he believes the batsmen missed a great opportunity to score some runs on a perfect batting surface. “We’ve got to bat against the top and against spin,” he said. “We need to have more rounded players. “In 20-over cricket you can get away with it as it’s more condensed. “But in 50 overs you have a lot more time in the game than you think. “For us to get bowled out in the 37th over on the best batting track in the world – there was huge missed opportunities there for some of our batters. “We really couldn’t have had a worse day.” Australia have played at the Riverside Ground four times, winning against Bangladesh in 1999 and England in 2005. Bates in record form Not content with merely destroying the One Day International record book, the White Ferns yesterday made Twenty20 history as well – for only a few hours. Led by a record-breaking innings by Suzie Bates, the White Ferns blasted the highest score in Women’s International T20 cricket, smashing 216/1 against South Africa in the first match of their TriNation series in Taunton. Already holders of the highest score in ODI cricket, the White Ferns continued their phenomenal run with the bat to snare the T20 record just 12 days later. However, the record lasted for only a matter of hours. Following their 66-run loss to New Zealand, South Africa’s bowlers were shellacked by England shortly after. England blasted 250-3, breaking the
record by a staggering 34 runs. The White Ferns’ total was set thanks to the powerful opening duo of Bates and Sophie Devine, who were once again to the fore as the Ferns roared past the previous record. Devine and Bates combined for the biggest partnership in Twenty20 history – adding 182 in their opening stand, as both players blasted career-best knocks. Devine smoked 73 from 48 balls, but the history was accomplished by Bates, who became the first White Fern to hit a T20 century as she unleashed, smiting 16 fours and three sixes for an unbeaten 124 off just 66 balls. A big win on Monday was followed by a big loss on Wednesday night for the Ashburton College A netball side. After cruising to a 45-18 win over Burnside High School in an annual sporting exchange between the two schools to start the week, the Kaye Kennedy-coached side
headed into their latest Canterbury secondary schools’ SuperNet competition game against fellow mid-table side Rangiora High School feeling good. But they found themselves under huge pressure right from the opening whistle and came home with a disappointing 40-19 loss. “We really struggled to find our connec-
tions through the court,” Kennedy said. “Rangiora had two very tall shooters who had the ability to be accurate from anywhere in the circle, making it tough for our circle defenders. “In saying that, they did a really good job and picked up some intercepts and tips giving us some turnovers. “Unfortunately, we just lacked cohesion

and didn’t score off our own centre passes enough.” Kennedy said that the girls were hurting after the match and were determined to continue building as the season progressed. Ashburton College’s next SuperNet game will be against St Margaret’s in Christchurch next Wednesday night.
