Local motorists are being prompted to think twice when they leave their vehicles. Following a small number of recent car break-ins and thefts, Ashburton police are urging people to
be wary of any opportunists who may be lurking. Sergeant Dan Harker said it is important that people remove any valuables from their car – or anything that may be indicative of valuables, like laptop bags – even if it means stowing it in a less vis-
ible part of the vehicle. It was also worth double checking that vehicles are left locked, he said. “Make sure your vehicle is not attractive to thieves.” Thefts could occur in both private residential and public areas, rural and urban, police advised.

“And the majority of thefts occur overnight – but that’s not to say they don’t occur during the day,” Harker said. Car break-ins have been relatively common in the district this year, according to police data. In the first five months of this
year, Mid Canterbury police stations recorded 65 incidents of theft of motor vehicle parts or contents – averaging three a week. In the five months prior to that, Mid Canterbury police stations were only recording about one a week.

Christmas in the Park returns Ashburton Mitre 10 Mega Christmas in the Park is back this year with a big, fun, family event at the Ashburton Domain on December 8. The night will include local musical and dance talent, a fireworks display, and of course Santa will be taking time out of his busy schedule to perform for the children once again. Ashburton New Life Church pastor Lisa Anderson’s vision of a free family event celebrating the true meaning of Christmas first came to life in 2013 and has grown each year with crowds of up to 11,000 attending the event. “It’s important that this event stays free to all,” Anderson said. “It can be difficult for families to get in the car and attend events out of town these days, with time and cost issues and we are so grateful to local businesses who sponsor us and individuals who volunteer their time to help keep it cost-free and family friendly.” The event is held under the auspices of the Ashburton Christian Ministers’ Association, who used to hold a carols service in the domain each year.
The association was happy to support a Christmas concert that celebrated the true meaning of the season and brought families together for a fun night, she said. In 2016, Dave Dobbyn wowed Ashburton with Kiwi musical favourites, after spending the day prior to the concert, visiting and speaking to schools and groups in the district. This year, the domain oval will come to life again and families are welcome to bring a blanket and a picnic tea before the concert starts. There will be coffee and hot food available at the venue, and organisers are expecting people to start arriving from 5pm onwards. Organisers are on the hunt for a creative person to design and manage the 2018 Christmas stage and as the event is run solely by volunteers, this is also a volunteer position. Contact details are on the event’s Facebook page. The line-up of performers for this year is yet to be announced but organisers say they have a spectacular Christmas celebration up their sleeve.

Dissent over Ashburton i-SITE closure almost disappeared By Sue NewmaN

Last winter was marked by petitions, rallies and a groundswell of community outrage as the closed signs were hammered up on Ashburton i-SITE. Ten months down the track the central town building remains closed and the role the i-SITE played has been absorbed by several local businesses, mainly the Ashburton Library and House of Travel. And what has also happened over those 10 months is the angst
over the closure appears to have disappeared, says Ashburton’s district librarian Jill Watson. Initially locals regularly told library staff that the service they were providing was inferior to that provided by i-SITE staff, but that vocal discontent had largely stopped, she said. Today the library has added a steady trade in providing information about the district and accommodation options to travellers. Since November almost 700 people have used the library’s information service. Numbers
peaked in January at 129. “People are wanting a range of information. It could be where to find a B&B or they might want a map of the town and mostly we can provide them with what they’re looking for,” she said. While House of Travel had taken up the transport booking service from the i-SITE, Watson said there was still a gap in this service on Saturday afternoons and Sundays. “A lot of people will come into us wanting this, but it’s a service we can’t provide so there’s a gap for people who don’t use a credit
card to do it online,” she said. “It’s largely settled down well and we’re anticipating business will pick up again over the summer.” The closure of Ashburton’s iSITE came on the back of two Ashburton District Council reports, commissioned to identify the cost and value of both the Ashburton and the Methven iSITES. All up the two cost ratepayers $30,000 a year to run and between them they recorded a loss for the 2016/2017 year of $48,000. Councillors agreed to close the
Ashburton site and make changes to the way the Methven site operated. The central town building owned by the council, has been empty since October and options for its use were still under consideration, said council business support group manager Paul Brake. The i-SITE opened in October 1989 and its 30th anniversary will be celebrated on October 17 when former volunteers and staff will meet at the Hotel Ashburton to share their memories.

This has the benefit of avoiding a rates bill that arrives right on Christmas as occurred with bimonthly billing, Hogg said. “We have had people querying why the first payment is on August 20 but this pulls us into line with every other council where the rates bill comes in the middle of the three month period.” Rates were due for payment on Monday and over the past two days there had been more people than normal at the customer services counter, but a check on bank activity showed a very large number of people had paid on time, she said.

The first instalment of the Ashburton District’s new quarterly rates bills has been ticked off, but not without some angst among ratepayers. In line with most other councils around New Zealand, Ashburton opted to make the change this year to quarterly rates bills rather than bi-monthly, but that change has had more than a few ratepayers baulking at paying a three monthly bill just two months after they wrapped up their previous rating year in June. The transition was always going to be a bit difficult for some, finance manager Sandy Hogg said, but the change had been well publicised along with the additional payment options around direct debit that had been introduced.

Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon will next week kick off a programme to be more accessible to everyone, regardless of where they live. During a jam-packed four-day trip around his electorate, he will be hosting 15 clinics in communities like Mayfield, Hinds and Fairton, through to smaller areas like Carew and Rangitata Huts. Falloon has one office in Ashburton and one in Timaru, where he said he has spoken with hundreds of locals on issues ranging “from immigration through to problems with ACC, access to student loans through to helping our farmers deal with MPI over mycoplasma bovis.” He has also held five constituency clinics or “pop-up offices” in Methven, Pleasant Point and Temuka, but said 15 in four days is unprecedented. “It’s important wherever people live that they have access to me as their local MP. Our community is diverse and so are the issues we have here,” Falloon said. Falloon will also be holding a public meeting on the End of Life Choice Bill in Ashburton next Monday. The End of Life

He’s been gracing our television and computer screens for the past four-and-a-half years as a news reporter, but things are about to get very different for former Methven lad, Ben Irwin. Twenty-seven-year-old Irwin is about to uproot his life and relocate to the remote location of Doha in Qatar where he has accepted a role as a news producer for Al Jazeera English – a role which the former Mount Hutt College student can’t wait to sink his teeth into. “It’s pretty exciting, but also a little daunting in some ways too,” he said. “But I can’t wait to get over there, where I’m going to be based and working from the headquarters for their global news, so it’s going to be quite the experience.” Irwin has risen in recent years from one of TV3’s young news journalist team to become a frequent face amongst their daily news coverage and while there were opportunities to further himself within the mix in New Zealand, getting away and spending some time overseas while advancing himself profes-

and have no kids that it would be a good time to go out and do something like this because the goal is to return to New Zealand at some point.” Al Jazeera holds a strong place in the global news market and is bettered only in terms of size and scope by the BBC – so Irwin is going from a big player at a national level to a worldwide recognised brand. “International relations have always been something I’ve been interested in and the chance to branch out and do something different was a real part of the overall appeal of it. “And after four and a bit years of being in front of the camera, being behind it is going to help me add a few more tools to the toolkit as well.” Irwin is heading to his new quarters in late September but is planning on spending a few weeks back in Methven before he heads off including partaking in one last social venture before he jets away. “I’m actually looking forward to getting back for one last hurrah at the Methven races with a few of my mates, that should be a good way to sign things off before heading overseas.”

Failures continue on Montalto water supply By Sue NewmaN

A water filtration trial is about to get under way on the Montalto water supply as the small rural scheme continues to be given a fail mark by its owner, the Ashburton District Council. Its users have been required to boil their household water supply for 111 out of the past 365 days and that has led to a permanent boil water notice being put in place, said council assets manager Andrew Guthrie. “Given this situation, the council has determined that it is safest and prudent to place the scheme on a permanent boil water notice until planned upgrades for the scheme demonstrate that it is safe to remove the notice,” he said. In the wake of findings from the Havelock North Inquiry, the council has been assessing its water supplies with greater scrutiny and is continuing to investigate treatment upgrade options for Montalto that will provide safe potable drinking water through the scheme’s current source. This upgrade will likely
involve filtration and upgraded ultra-violet disinfection equipment. “As part of these investigations, we will be piloting cartridge filtration equipment in coming months – on a small scale, to determine if this equipment would be suitable as part of the upgrade. “Once we have trialled this equipment and are satisfied with
the results, then we will begin implementing the full upgrade. We will review the need for the permanent boil water notice when the new equipment is operational,” Guthrie said. There are about 30 connections to the Montalto supply which is mainly used for stockwater, but in some cases is also used for household supply. The Havelock North inquiry
had changed the landscape for local authorities when it came to drinking water supplies and the council is now working to ensure all of its community supplies are up to the new standards, he said. For most that meant bore heads would need to be raised and UV treatment systems installed. “We’re making the best management we can based on what we know now.” The management of community water supplies was becoming increasingly complex with tougher standards in place and possibly future changes to the way supplies were managed, Guthrie said. Currently local authorities manage their own drinking water supplies but a current review could see this change, with drinking water managed by independent regional or super regional providers. The review is getting ready to unveil options for how the new water landscape could look, reporting to the Government in October with a decision on regulation likely next year.
Learning Support staff take a day’s strike action By Katie todd

More local members of the New Zealand Educational Institute (NZEI) Te Rui Roa took a day’s strike action yesterday. Learning Support specialists employed directly by the Ministry of Education took industrial action for better pay and working conditions. Rallies were held in 18 centres across the country, with a small group from Ashburton heading to Christchurch central. The Ministry employs 850 Learning Support specialists around the country in total, who
provide specialist, itinerant support to the increasing number of children with the highest learning needs in schools and early childhood education centres. They include educational psychologists, early intervention teachers, advisors on deaf children, physiotherapists, speech language therapists and occupational therapists. Learning Support specialists are asking for a tangible offer from the Ministry of Education to reduce their overwhelming caseloads. NZEI Te Riu Roa National Executive member Byron Sanders
said there aren’t enough specialists for the children who need the support. “Those of us in the job are pushed to our limits with extreme workloads,” he said. “We need more front-line specialists so all children get the support they need without delay, and we have to ensure specialist staff are paid enough to both recruit and retain their skills for our children.” In Mid Canterbury, Hampstead School principal Peter Melrose said schools rely on the expert advice and guidance of Learning Support specialists to
make things as easy as possible for students. “But their workloads are growing all the time,” he said. According to data from the Ministry of Education there are 49 students in Ashburton District with high needs or very high needs. Ten years ago, there were 33 – marking nearly a 50 per cent increase. The nationwide strike was held after a secret ballot which closed on Monday. Learning Support staff have previously received the offer of a 2 per cent payrise from the Ministry of Education, followed by a further 2 per cent in March 2019.

Teacher faces charges A Christchurch teacher appeared in court yesterday accused of sexually abusing two girls over a 14-year period. The man, in his sixties, cannot be named after a judge granted him interim name suppression at Christchurch District Court. He faces a total of 17 charges, including rape, along with other counts of sexual violation and indecent assault. The allegations date from January 2004 to May 11 this year. The man was remanded on bail without plea to appear in court again on September 13, with special bail conditions that he does not apply for any travel documents or try to leave the country. - NZME
One dead in gang clash A man has been shot dead in Whanganui, amid reports of a gang clash in the suburb of Castlecliff. Detective Inspector Ross McKay said police have started a homicide investigation after a fatal shooting in Puriri St about 9.40am yesterday. The offenders remain outstanding, however it was believed those involved were known to each other and were known to police, McKay said. Stuff reported the man, a Mongrel Mob member, had died protecting children and other occupants when rival gang members turned up at his home. McKay said additional staff have been sent to Whanganui to assist. - NZME

Maori seats have a mana of their own W
inston Peters continues to campaign for the abolition of Maori-specific seats in parliament. He has done so for many years. His argument, that there is no longer any need for them as Maori, these days, is well represented in the Beehive in its own right. Many electorates are held by Maori members. What’s more, the last election saw the demise – for the time being, at least – of the Maori Party, which, thanks to its willingness to go into a form of coalition with National, had been able to punch above its proverbial weight almost since Tari-

ana Turia and Dr Pita Sharples set it up on the rebound from their rejection by Labour over the Foreshore and Seabed Act of 2004. Thus, claims Winston and his followers, such seats are surplus to requirement. A Maori voice is now well-established in the House, indicating the Maori seats, after 100, and more, years, have served their purpose and done their dash. We simply don’t need them anymore. And so says another leading advocate of Maori seat abolition, Dr Don Brash, to whom l referred last week, whose mantra is “we are all now one”. It’s a widespread feeling throughout Aotearoa, New Zealand. So that’s it then. The venerable Maori seats should now fade gracefully into the mists of NZ political history from which they emerged more than a century ago. But just a second, is the gun being jumped? Things may not seem
as they look. At this very moment, a bill piloted by Rino Tirikatene, is being considered by Parliament, under the terms of which the Maori seats would be officially entrenched in whatever electoral system is in force and a 75 per cent majority would be required if they were to be abolished. Whatever Winston Peters, Dr Brash or many other perhaps marginally less distinguished voters may feel, the Maori seats seem destined to be around for some time yet. And the reason for that is not hard to see, whatever the numbers and any “practical” considerations that may be on the table. The fact is those long-existing Maori seats have a mana of their own; an overwhelming emotional attachment. They are an integral part of our political and national scene with long-held appeal and prestige. In a word, they are “outside” the normal political boundaries and are therefore unlikely ever to lose their lofty status. It seems to me any politician attempting to expunge them from the record is on a hiding to nothing. Peters has said he is prepared to look at Tirikatene’s bill but only after a referendum has been held on it. Presumably the well-remunerated deputy PM and Foreign

Minister assumes the people will do the job for him and turn down the suggestion that the seats remain in the House in perpetuity. He will then be able to get on with crusading for their permanent removal. Long-term, I fear he may be seriously disappointed. MPs’ pay Further, the tricky issue of pay scales for MPs has been brought to the surface again by our “stillnew-to-motherhood” PM, Jacinda Ardern. In a statement that must have brought a spine-tingling shudder to all her colleagues, she has “frozen” them for a year. Oh dear! How will they manage? At least one MP I may have mentioned from time to time is on an annual salary of at least $325,000. How does he get by, I wonder? However, Jacinda’s well-timed announcement will have brought joy and elation to the hardpressed teachers and nurses. The punitive approach to crime is not working – minister By DaviD Fisher Minister of Corrections Kelvin Davis has issued a heartfelt call to change “a level of imprisonment that is simply devastating our Maori whanau and communities”. “The system is broken. It’s not working. And our whanau are hurting the most,” he told 700 people gathered for the second day of the Government’s criminal justice summit. “If we genuinely want to see fewer Maori caught in the system as both perpetrators and victims of crime, then we need to fundamentally change our approach to criminal justice.” Maori make up more than 50 per cent of around 10,200 people in prison yet are 15 per cent of the population. Finding an answer to the high rate of Maori imprisonment will be key to the Government’s pledge to reduce the prison population by 30 per cent in 15 years. Davis spoke of a former inmate called Sam, who he met at a marae in Whangarei. He said Sam told him he had “never been hit or abused” until he was taken from his family of 16 children by a government which considered the burden was too much for his parents to shoulder. He was placed with a boys’
home in Levin – the former Hokio Boys’ Home features in the stories of many caught in a life of crime – when he stayed four years. “He had never known abuse or violence in his life until he walked through their doors.” When he returned to Auckland, he felt alien in the city which had once been home and joined a gang inside a fortnight. That bond with the gang lasted for 48 years, his life on a path that began with the state removing him from his home, Davis said. “Sam is now 60. The gang patches on his face still vivid. His life has been spent in and out of prison. “Why didn’t we do something? As a Government, as Maori: Why didn’t we help? “There had to be dozens of points in Sam’s life when someone
could have stepped in.” Davis said the one time the state did step in, it was to take him from his family which “sent him down the path that ultimately turned him into a gang member” along with his whanau. “It’s our fault he spent nearly half a century in a gang.” Davis said there were “5000 Sams” in prison – the number of Maori currently incarcerated. “We need to do something together to create a different future for Maori and for their whanau. “We need to break the cycle, connect them to their people, help them, and have hope for them. And if we accept that there is a need for change – then we must all be part of that.” Davis said the system needed to change, but the Government also

Little spoke of “grinding poverty”, homelessness, mental health services which were under pressure and an education system which still allowed children to “slip through the cracks”. Govt puts stop to performance pay Performance pay for public service chief executives has been ended, State Services Minister Chris Hipkins announced yesterday. Until now public service chief executive remuneration packages have included the potential to receive a discretionary payment of up to 15 per cent for exceptional performance. Hipkins has also signalled a move to set lower pay rates when chief executives are appointed and together the moves could save up to $4 million by 2021/2022. “The decision to remove performance pay, in addition to dialling-back pay settings, including the appointment and reappointment of chief executives at lower points in the remuneration range, will put the brakes on the growth rate of chief executive pay,” Hipkins said. “These moves will reduce the total potential forecast expenditure on chief executive remuneration by up to $4 million by 2021/2022. “We want a public service with an international reputation for excellence that is motivated by a spirit of service to the community.” The move comes a day after Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced a year-long pay freeze for MPs while a new pay-setting system is devised. MPs’ pay is based on a formula and the Remuneration Authority has no discretion. MPs were about to get a 3 per cent pay rise, but that will not now occur. Hipkins acknowledged the State Services Commissioner Peter Hughes and
needed to change its attitude and its systems. “As a Government we need to make sure the system helps and does not hurt Maori further. “We need to make sure those who have found their way into the system leave as better people – not broken people.” Davis said the greater proportion of Maori in the prison system meant it was for Maori to “lead the solution”. He said about half of those Maori in prison were from his iwi, Ngapuhi. He had whanau in prison and childhood friends. “That’s not to excuse the offences these people have committed – but something has to be done to reduce the scale of this problem and the sheer waste of human potential.” Davis said the problem was not new and previous governments had failed to accept or overcome the challenge. “We take pride in New Zealand as a country that leads the world in many ways. “But there is an ugly reality in this country. We are a world leader when it comes to putting people in prison. We can’t seem to get enough of it.” Davis’ comments echo Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s speech on Monday night during which

Welcome back Christmas in the Park I
t’s not for everyone, but the return of Christmas in the Park to Ashburton this year will be welcomed by many. There was real disappointment last year when it was announced the event wouldn’t go ahead, but true to their word organisers of the hugely popular event said it would return in the future – and return it has. News yesterday that the New Life Church, who have been the driving force behind the event since it was first held back in 2013, were bringing the night back to life in 2018 was a bit of an early Christmas gift for the Ashburton District and some-
thing we now need the community to get behind to ensure it remains a viable event for years to come. A free event boasting some of the best local, and national talent, available – Christmas in the Park was a yearly staple for many in the lead-up to the festive season and after missing out
last year many will be keen to flood to the Ashburton Domain on December 8 to reinstate the tradition. When it was last held, in 2017 – the event attracted 11,000 people to enjoy the festivities, making it one of the biggest social events in terms of crowd size on the annual district calendar alongside an event like the Multi-Cultural Bite. So, it’s vitally important that it remains a part of the calendar from year to year. We sometimes struggle with big ticket events in this district, particularly of an entertainment factor at which we can get the

family out of the house and go and enjoy it as an entire town, district and region. There are events like the MultiCultural Bite or the annual Ashburton A&P Show, but neither seems to boast the togetherness that Christmas in the Park does in that sense that everyone is sitting enjoying the same thing at the same time. So, ultimately it comes down to us as a community to make sure we nurture the night. Whether that be as families or friends attending the event, or through our generosity as sponsors or performers who so willing give their time, effort and
money to make the night go off without a hitch. Organisers are also on the search this year for someone to help design the stage on which performers will showcase their talents – so although you might not be able to help in some ways, there are plenty of options of how you can roll the sleeves up and do your bit. As has been said, we are lucky that the New Life Church has brought the event back and we must now take the responsibility of ensure its future for years to come. It might be a wee way away yet, but the time for a little Christmas spirit starts now.

ost of us take simple things, like being able to flick on a light switch or boil a jug, for granted. But from these small, every day things right through to making sure street lights come on at night, 24/7 electricity is humming away behind the scenes, keeping our district powered up and connected. Did you know that the electricity network in Ashburton District is 3074 kilometres long? In our district, EA Networks looks after this network and its fibre optic communications network. The company is a co-operatively owned business, where residents that are connected to the local electricity distribution system, automatically become shareholders in the company. Whenever a resident disconnects from the EA Networks power network or moves away from the district, they can have their shares refunded. Ashburton District Council holds 28,750,000 of the 30,069,100 shares in EA Networks with the rest of the shares belonging to residents. As part of being a shareholder in the company, you receive a vote to elect a member to the EA Networks Shareholders’ Committee. The duties of those on the shareholders’ committee include appointing the directors of Electricity Ashburton, reviewing the performance of EA Networks in line with its annual Statement of Corporate Intent, and reporting the company’s performance to shareholders. Council directly appoints three out of the seven members on the shareholders’ committee. I would like to congratulate David Ward on his recent reappointment for another threeyear term as one of the council appointees. David has been a member of the shareholders’

He runs a farm near Fairton with his wife Hilary and together they won the Gallagher Technology and Innovation Award at the 2017 Deer Industry Environmental Awards. The other two council appointees on the committee are well-known local businesspeople Anne Marett and Chris Robertson. Anne was appointed in 2013 and is the director of Croys Chartered Accountants. She is also the chair of the Netball Mainland board and previously worked as a registered nurse. Chris was appointed in 2004 and is a partner at law firm Russell Moon & Fail. He is also involved with several other community organisations in the district. Council’s involvement in appointing three of the members to the shareholders’ committee contributes to our community outcomes of a thriving and diverse local economy, where the infrastructure and services meet current and foreseeable future needs; and an involved
community with quality leadership, where we work together with government, community organisations and the private sector to promote our community interest. The four other members are elected by the shareholders and are currently Ian Cullimore (chairman), Jeanette Maxwell, Alister Lilley and Robert Newlands. The council appointments are staggered throughout each three-year term to ensure there is continuity on the committee. The relationship between council and EA Networks extends much further into the community. As many of you will know, EA Networks is the naming sponsor of the EA Networks Centre, after contributing $1 million to the cost of the facility. The contribution from it was important in helping meet the community target of raising $5 million to go towards the overall cost. The company also provides schools in the district with fibre optic, ultra-fast broadband internet to ensure all our tamariki
have access to online education tools. The EA Networks AGM for shareholders is being held next Wednesday, August 29 at the Hotel Ashburton on Racecourse Road from 5.30pm. I encourage everyone that is interested to head along to the meeting to hear about the past year in business, what has been achieved, and what will be happening in our district over the next year. If you are unable to go, but still want to vote at the AGM, you can download a proxy voting form from the EA Networks website to ensure your vote is counted. coming up. Fertiliser, regular watering and some annuals planted would be a great improvement at no great cost. Not last year’s perennials that never looked colourful or tidy. A well cared for lawn with flowers would greatly improve this

Humiliation for Turnbull Malcolm Turnbull has survived a “humiliating” leadership challenge from Peter Dutton, winning a party-room vote 48-35 and forcing his rival to resign from cabinet. While Turnbull has won the day, the battle for the leadership of the party is not over. Dutton will move from the Home Affairs Minister position he lobbied hard to create to the backbench, where he is likely to continue to agitate for the leadership. Turnbull declared his top position in the Liberal Party vacant at a party-room meeting yesterday in a shock tactic that saved him but came at a massive cost. The tight vote means 40 per cent of the Liberal Party do not want Turnbull to continue as leader and has increased the chance of a rushed election before Christmas. Mr Dutton put his hand up to challenge Mr Turnbull for the top job after the PM’s risky move to take control of the party. The deputy leadership was also declared vacant, but Julie Bishop was the only person nominated so hung on to her role. Turnbull offered for Dutton to remain in cabinet and keep his job of Home Affairs, but he declined the offer, The Daily Telegraph reported. Dutton visited Turnbull in the ministerial wing of Parliament House shortly before the formal meeting. Sky News political editor David Speers said the fact that 35 of his party members voted against Turnbull was a humiliation for him. “In Parliament, he’s going to be standing there in front of a backbench, a third, nearly half of whom don’t support him,” he said. “Incredibly difficult to see how Malcolm Turnbull can recover from this.” While the challenge over the prime ministership was ostensibly about energy policy, the true source of the leadership tensions goes much deeper. Dutton was seen as an alternative leader who could better represent the conservative wing of the party, which

Chief government whip Nola Marino announced the close margin in the votes after the tense party room meeting. “It is always orderly in our party room,” Marino said. “He (the PM) thanked the colleagues for their support.” Commentators have declared the troubled result for the PM as a “mortal wounding”, securing support of more than 40 per cent of the party room. Dutton’s resignation means Turnbull will have to reshuffle his cabinet, with commentators predicting a second leadership ballot in the weeks or months ahead.
The move also raises questions over whether any of Dutton’s allies could stand down. If he had won yesterday’s spill he would have become Australia’s sixth prime minister in just eight years. Turnbull won his spill against Tony Abbott in September 2015 when he won by a margin of 10 votes, 54 to 44. Julia Gillard won her first challenge from Kevin Rudd who was only about to collect support from about 30 per cent of his colleagues. Gillard was defeated in the second spill. Bob Hawke won his first ballot with 60 per cent of the vote to lose the second challenge. ABC’s Patricia Karvelas said the result was devastating for Turnbull and could spark another leadership challenge in days. “I’ve had contact with some of the people doing numbers and building support for Peter Dutton who are saying that
as close as Thursday, yes – it’s Tuesday – that’s in two days, they may have another shot,” she said. “It is devastating for the Prime Minister. “There’s no other way of viewing it.” ABC political journalist Barrie Cassidy said Turnbull adopted his tactic for everyone to see. “Why did he declare the position vacant today? And surely, that is because he knew that three weeks from now, there would be two more terrible Newspolls, it would give Peter Dutton lots of time to make all of those calls and to round up the numbers, so he decided to strike today,” Cassidy said. “But then by doing that, he’s just exposed the weaknesses of his position. “You can’t … even putting aside who wins this particular ballot, you can’t claim to have the 35 people voting against you.” - AAP

Mickey Serong, 18, had her number shared with the rapper’s 26.3 million Instagram followers in a post that has since been deleted. Man in a rage strangled pregnant wife Hours after Chris Watts made a public plea for his missing wife and daughters to return home, police arrested the 33-year-old Colorado man for allegedly murdering all three of them. But Watts has now claimed he’s only guilty of one murder. According to Watts’ unsealed arrest affidavit, the former oil worker claimed he strangled his pregnant wife Shanann
in a rage after witnessing the deaths of his daughters Bella, 4, and Celeste, 3, on a baby monitor. Watts told police he and Shanann spent the early hours of August 13 sitting together upset and crying after he told his pregnant wife he wanted to go through with their separation. Watts denied he was having an affair but an investiga-
tion later uncovered he was in a relationship with a co-worker. Watts first told police Shanann left the house to visit a friend and he then left for work. A day later, one of Shanann’s friends reported her and her two young daughters missing after they failed to return to their family home. Watts fronted cameras for a number of local TV stations
and pleaded for his wife to come home. “It wasn’t like her not to answer a phone call or text and when her friend Nicole showed up at the door, I was like ‘Something’s up’. Then I came home and it was like walking into a ghost town, she wasn’t here,” he said. “Shanann, Bella and Celeste if you’re out there just please come home.” - PA

New data has confirmed Kiwis’ love for a bargain, with $6 out of every $10 spent on groceries going on items which are on sale or promotion. Insights from Nielsen found New Zealand supermarket shoppers are well ahead of Western world counterparts in wanting to nab savings. For every $10 spent on groceries last year, Australians spent $4 on promotions, Britain $3, Germany $2 and France just a $1.80. Kiwis spent almost $6 for every $10 on promotions. Retail NZ general manager of public affairs Greg Harford said Kiwis were often shopping on a budget so it was no surprise many were after a bargain. “Kiwis are definitely keen on a bargain, and we see evidence of that right across the retail sector. They are always looking for a good deal and both retailers and suppliers see massive interest from customers when items go on sale,” Harford said. “The better the specials, the bigger the interest from consumers – and we see that every year with massive queues for Boxing

The government put an end to years of legal battles, announcing it will pay former residential red zone owners 100 per cent of the 2007/08 rateable value for uninsured homes. The ex-gratia payments will be made to the former owners of 103 uninsured and under-insured red zone properties who didn’t take part in the legal action against the Crown and didn’t accept earlier offers. The total cost of the payments, expected over the next few weeks, is forecast to be about $12 million, Greater Christchurch Regeneration Minister Megan Woods said in a statement. “The plight of people who were uninsured at the time of the quakes has been one of the difficult legacies of the earthquakes,” she said. The payment will be made to property owners who have not already received a payment for their uninsured improvements and will be implemented immediately. The dispute originally emerged when insured property owners were offered 100 per cent of the

There’s nothing like a good meatloaf T
2t lemon juice
he humble meatloaf is one of life’s under-rated comfort foods. It’s too often overlooked as a good dinner option or it’s discounted as something that’s just too basic to bother with. But a good meatloaf takes a lot of beating – for dinner, in a sandwich, or sliced and eaten cold from a lunch box.
■ Combine the beef, sausage, breadcrumbs, onions, salt and pepper, garlic, parsley, curry and egg in a large bowl. Mix well. ■ Mix milk and water. Add to the meat mixture a bit at a time until it is smooth but firm. Shape into a loaf shape and put into a greased baking tin. ■ Bake for 30min at 190°C. While the meatloaf is cooking, make up the sauce. ■ Sauce: Saute the onions in butter until golden. ■ Add the tomato sauce, wine (or beef stock), worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, water, vinegar, coffee and lemon juice. ■ Bring slowly to the boil, lower heat and simmer for 10 or so minutes. ■ After the meatloaf has cooked for 30 min or so, pour half the sauce over. ■ Return it to the oven and bake for another 45 min, basting often with remaining sauce.
Barbecue meatloaf 500g minced raw beef 500g sausage meat 2 medium onions, chopped finely 4 slices white sandwich bread, stale, crumbled 1 whole egg 1/4 t salt 1/2 C milk 1/4 C water 2t curry powder 4T parsley, finely chopped 1/4 t pepper Sauce: 1/4 C tomato sauce 1/4 C tomato chutney 1/4 C worcestershire sauce 2T malt vinegar 1/4 C brown sugar ■ Preheat oven to 180°C. ■ Combine mince, sausage meat, onions, breadcrumbs, curry powder, salt and pepper. ■ Add milk, egg and water mixed together, thoroughly mix all ingredients. ■ Place in an oven-proof roasting dish shaping with wet hands into a loaf. ■ Put into pre-heated oven. ■ While meatloaf is cooking, heat sauce ingredients and simmer for 5 mins. ■ After approx 20-25 mins drain any fat out of dish. ■ After fat is gone pour sauce over the loaf. ■ Return to oven for approx 30 mins frequently spooning sauce over loaf. ■ Serve hot or cold.
Cheesy meatloaf 500g Quality Mark beef mince 1T olive oil 1 onion, chopped 1 clove garlic, crushed 2C fresh breadcrumbs 2T red wine
Simple meatloaf 1 egg, lightly beaten 2T grated parmesan 3T tomato paste Bunch fresh parsley, coarsely chopped 5 fresh basil leaves, chopped 1/2 t dried oregano 1C mozzarella cheese, grated ■ Preheat oven to 200°C. ■ Heat oil in a large saucepan and stir onion and garlic over a moderate heat until soft. ■ Cool and then combine with all other meatloaf ingredients, but only half the breadcrumbs. ■ Season with salt and pepper and mix well with clean hands. ■ Turn mixture into a greased meatloaf tin and firmly press down to fill the dish. ■ Cover with aluminium foil and bake in oven for 30 minutes. ■ Remove foil and top with remaining fresh breadcrumbs, grated mozzarella and lots of pepper. ■ Bake until cheese melts and bubbles. ■ Stand in pan for 5–10 minutes before serving.
Indian meatloaf 600-700g beef mince 1 red onion, peeled and finely diced 2t minced garlic 1T curry powder or paste 1 1/4 C fresh breadcrumbs, cooked rice or lentils 1T freshly-chopped thyme 1 egg, beaten 1/4 C worcestershire sauce 400g can Indian-style tomatoes 1/2 C beef stock ■ Preheat the oven to 180°C. ■ Mix together the mince, onion, garlic and half the curry powder. ■ Work in the breadcrumbs, thyme, egg, worcestershire sauce and half the canned tomatoes. ■ Mould into a loaf shape. ■ Place in a shallow oven-proof dish, or press the mixture into a greased loaf tin. ■ Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes. ■ Stir the remaining tomatoes and curry powder or paste in with the beef stock. ■ When the meatloaf has baked
500g lean beef mince 450g sausage meat, or sausages, peeled 1 onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 egg 1C grated carrot 1/2 C chopped parsley 2t prepared mustard 2t mixed herbs 1t salt Pepper Topping 2T rolled oats 1T brown sugar 2T tomato sauce 1/4 C chopped parsley
for 30 minutes, pour the tomato mixture over the top. ■ Return to the oven and cook a further 20 minutes. ■ Rest the meatloaf for 5 minutes before carving into thick slices.
Top notch meatloaf 600g lean minced beef 600g sausage meat 1C fine breadcrumbs 2 medium onions, chopped fine 1T curry powder 1/2 C water 1T chopped parsley 1 beaten egg 1 clove crushed garlic 1/2 C milk Salt and pepper to taste Sauce 1 very finely chopped or minced onion 1T butter 1/2 C tomato sauce 1/4 C red wine or beef stock 1/4 C worcestershire sauce 1/4 C brown sugar, packed 1/4 C water 2T vinegar 1T instant coffee
■ Preheat the oven to 190°C. ■ Combine the mince, sausage meat, onion, garlic, egg, carrot, parsley, mustard, herbs, salt and the pepper to taste. ■ Mix well. Combine all the topping ingredients. ■ Press the mixture into a 22cm loaf tin, spread with the prepared topping and cover with tinfoil. ■ Cook for 30 minutes then remove the foil. Cook for a further 30 minutes or until the juices run clear when tested with a skewer.

Stunning wake-up call at Hakatere

■ Preheat the oven to 180°C. ■ Filling: Heat a dash of oil in a large saucepan over a very high heat. Add the lamb in two batches to brown, breaking up any lumps with a wooden spoon. Drain and set aside in a bowl. ■ Reduce the heat to medium and add another dash of oil to the pan. Add the onion and garlic and cook for about 5 minutes until the onion is soft. Add the lamb back to the pan along with one can of tomatoes, stock, cayenne pepper, sugar, rosemary, pumpkin and spinach. Simmer for about 10 minutes until reduced to a thick sauce. Stir through the mint and season to taste. ■ Cannelloni: Cover the base of the baking dish with the second can of tomatoes. Bring a pot of water to the boil. Remove from heat then soak the unfolded
pasta sheets for a few minutes to soften. Gently remove with a wooden spoon and cool slightly, then cut into rectangles. Spoon a line of the mince near the short edge of a rectangle and roll it up. Place the roll seam side-down in the baking dish. Repeat until the dish is full. Spread the crème fraîche over the cannelloni tubes to cover them, sprinkle with the cheese, season with salt and pepper and bake in the oven for 30 minutes. ■ If need be, grill for a few minutes just before serving to get it golden and bubbling on top. Hitting the speaking circuit I
took a step way outside of my comfort zone last week, and I’m so glad I did. I received an invitation from two lovely girls at Allenton School – Jazzy Christie and Libby Feutz – to go and speak to their class about my job. It wasn’t the first time I’d been asked to go and speak to a group about my job, but it was the first time I’d accepted the invitation. I’m a writer, not a speaker. I much prefer being the one putting people on the spot and asking the tough questions, rather than being the one on the spot myself. But, after reading their lovely email which said how they had been reading my articles and were inspired, and how they loved how I put heaps of “exciting details” and “amazing descriptive language” into my stories, they had me. I figured, if I was going to go and stand up in front of a group
and talk about myself and my job for the first time, kids would be a perfect audience to start with. And I was right. The seniors in room four at Allenton School were great. I arrived feeling more than a little nervous and having had a busy week putting all those details and descriptive language into many stories, I hadn’t had time to really think about what I was going to say. So, I just told them a bit about myself and dug way back into my memory bank to try and find some interesting tales to tell them. Having first started working at the Guardian 16 years ago there must have been plenty to pick and choose from, although ongoing memory issues post having children (aka baby brain) meant I struggled to come up with many. But still, a lot of the kids

seemed genuinely interested in what I had to say, much to my relief. Each child had a pre-prepared question to ask me, and despite my nerves, I think I managed to pull answers out of my head for all of them. One boy in particular really made my day when, after not looking all that interested for a start, asked his pre-prepared question – what was my favourite sport? The smile that swept across his face when I said it was rugby league and that my favourite team was the Warriors and my
favourite player was Shaun Johnson, was priceless. To me, my job was a job just like any other, and I enjoyed it. But as I was telling these kids that I got paid to go and watch sport, and meet all sorts of pretty cool people doing some amazing things, whose stories I then got to tell through the written word, I realised that a sports reporter gig was in fact pretty cool. And I think a few of them agreed. Towards the end, all questions answered and the end of the school day looming, I asked one final question of my own. Did anyone now want to be a journalist when they grew up? I didn’t count, but a fair few hands were thrown enthusiastically up in the air. That made putting my big girl pants on and getting over my fear of public speaking well and truly worth it.
Aussies win on payday Finally, a victory for the Wallabies. The All Blacks are the best team in the world, but their players are trumped by a couple of Aussies on payday. Star fullback Israel Folau ($2.2m) and captain Michael Hooper ($1.1m) are in the penthouse of rugby earnings. In a role reversal, lightweight loose forward Hooper scores a handy little victory over his All Blacks captaincy counterpart Kieran Read, one of the greatest forwards ever. None of the current team even make the world’s top 10. - NZME
Everyone chasing ABs Praise from their Rugby Championship rivals is barely registering with the All Blacks, who say they can go to another gear. It’s only one round in but the world champions already look capable of pulling off a third successive clean sweep of the Sanzaar competition. Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus admits the New Zealanders are on another level. Following his team’s 34-21 defeat of Argentina, Erasmus said the All Blacks’ first-up display was awesome. “We are chasing them, everyone is chasing them,” Erasmus said. - AAP
Cheika under fire

How many is enough? Ryan Crotty is the only person who can decide when he gives away rugby, according league and rugby player Shontayne Hape. Hape, who played 14 tests for the Kiwis and 13 for the England rugby team and was forced to retire in 2014 after multiple concussions, told Radio Sport the All Blacks midfielder probably had next year’s World Cup on his mind. Calls for Crotty to retire have increased since he was concussed during Saturday’s first Bledisloe test against Australia, his sixth head injury in two years. But Hape said as a World Cup was the only thing missing from Crotty’s impressive CV, it would be a strong motivation to keep him playing. “He probably thinks he has unfinished business. “After seeing the head knock on Saturday he will probably be spending the next couple of months off.’’ But Hape would not rule out him not coming back. “I had to wince when looked at it. “I could see straight away that he was gone. “I feel sorry for him. “He has had six knocks in the last couple of years. “Obviously he doesn’t go out looking for them but it’s just the nature of the sport. “How many is enough? “I had to realise when enough was enough as I was getting knocked out in training.
“The guys were not even hitting my head, just bumping into me and I was getting knocked out. “The difference between now and then was that we were hiding it. “A lot of the knocks at least in today’s game with the HIA [head injury assessment] are seen. “Everything around concussion is monitored. “It’s only a good thing for the players.’’ H a p e said the
decision to retire came down to the player. “The medical guys can only check so much and pretty much rely on the advice of what you are giving them. “You have to be honest with yourself.’’
Most players were honest these days because they were finding out some of the long-term effects of concussion. “After head knocks I was struggling. “I could not bear any sunlight, any noise and there was always nausea. “My head would be throbbing like having a mean hangover for the week.’’ He said that Crotty would be getting the best advice possible and it was up to him how he felt. - NZME
Michael Cheika must be axed as Wallabies coach … right now. That’s the opinion of senior rugby journalist Greg Growden following Saturday’s Bledisloe Cup defeat. Growden says that now’s the time for Rugby Australia to get rid of Cheika as coach, to give a replacement time to plan ahead of next year’s World Cup. “Drastic action is required because Cheika’s Wallabies are going absolutely nowhere, sending Australian rugby into a frightening nose-dive,” Growden wrote. He suggests Rugby Australia look at hiring Joe Schmidt or even taking the drastic measure and get a league coaching great like Wayne Bennett or Craig Bellamy to take the helm. - AAP
Goodhue happy at home For Jack Goodhue, scoring a try in the prestigious Bledisloe Cup clash was the highlight of his rugby career and the Kawakawa lad can’t wait to play in front of his whanāu this weekend. The 23-year-old Northland and Crusaders’ midfield back was one of the standout performers in the All Blacks’ 38-13 win over the Wallabies last weekend. His parents and possibly brothers Cam, Josh and Axel will be at Eden Park for the return leg on Saturday and a win for the home side will retain their strong-hold on the much-coveted trophy. - NZME

Thurston ‘tempted’ Ahead of his final home game for North Queensland, retiring Cowboys star Johnathan Thurston has revealed how close he came to leaving the NRL club and signing a lucrative overseas rugby deal. Thurston admits he was tempted by big money deals from Japan and France during a turbulent time in his career in 2010 but remained focused on winning the Cowboys’ maiden title, which they claimed in 2015. “That came at a time in my life that was pretty rough here, but I had unfinished business. I always wanted to bring a premiership to North Queensland so to be able to do that is probably the best memory I have got wearing the jersey,” Thurston said. - AAP
Maloney targets Storm Penrith veteran James Maloney has targeted the club’s final-round clash against Melbourne to make his return from a knee injury. After suffering an MCL injury in their win over Gold Coast, Maloney will miss his second game in a row when the Panthers visit the Warriors on Friday. But the Origin star said he should be back in full training next week. “The doc checked the knee out Monday when we come in. The good news just keeps on coming for Taonga Mbambo. The Year 13 Ashburton College student took part in the Canterbury Road Race Championships in Christchurch at the weekend and crossed the finish line in first place in the under-18 men’s section. Just a week out from a big trip to Australia where he’ll compete at the Australian Open and Schools’ Cross Country Championships on the Sunshine Coast, in Queensland, it’s a win that couldn’t have come at a better time. Mbambo leaves this week for Australia, where the championships will take place from August 25-27. He’s been busy preparing for the trip under the tutelage of Timaru’s Craig Motley, who has had him on a weekly schedule and given him motivation and encouragement which Mbambo said had been invaluable. Mbambo said the Australian trip would not have been possible without the help and support he’d received from the Ashburton community. A number of organisations had supported him financially, including the St. David’s and Hinds churches, the Ashburton Lions Club, Sir Richard Hadlee Sports Trust, the Rotary Club Trust of Ashburton and the Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains, along with many individuals. Mbambo wasn’t the only Ashburton runner in action at the Canterbury Road Race Championships, with fellow Ashburton College student Matthew Clough finishing seventh in the open men’s race.
Raiders lose Tapine Canberra forward Joseph Tapine has been ruled out for their final two games of the NRL season due to a broken thumb. Scans confirmed Tapine suffered the injury in Sunday’s upset win over the Roosters, ruling him out for the rest of the season. Tapine has been one of coach Ricky Stuart’s best forwards this season, totalling 58 tackle busts and 15 offloads to go with an average 85 metres and 31 tackles in 76 minutes. Positive news for Hartley’s F1 future Pierre Gasly’s promotion to the Red Bull Formula 1 team is another positive sign for Kiwi Formula 1 driver Brendon Hartley. The Frenchman was confirmed yesterday as Red Bull’s fulltime replacement for Australian Daniel Ricciardo, who will leave for Renault at the end of the 2018 season. Gasly will take that seat next year and join Max Verstappen in the senior squad. That means there is currently a vacant seat at Toro Rosso for 2019. The Formula 1 silly season has been kind to Le Mans winner and World Endurance champion Hartley, who is currently contesting his first full season in the sport’s highest echelon. Red Bull contracted driver Carlos Sainz Jr has been confirmed
at McLaren next year while Ricciardo’s move to Renault and the subsequent promotion of Gasly eases the pressure on Hartley to hold onto his seat moving into 2019. In short, two drivers under Red Bull contract have left the organisation. While it is understood Hartley has a two-year deal with Toro Rosso, the team admitted earlier in the season it looked into replacing the Kiwi with McLaren junior driver Lando Norris. At the time Hartley had made a couple of uncharacteristic driving errors while the team’s inability to give him a competitive car meant good results were not forthcoming. But Hartley has shown significant signs of improvement in the
Brendon Hartley past few races, often making the best of a bad situation and working hard to get his car further up the grid than it maybe deserves to be. He is known to be very good at providing quality feedback on the car and engine, which is a
big help for a team that is in the first year of a partnership with engine-supplier Honda. Red Bull will also use Honda engines from 2019, which could mean his knowledge of the equipment could be invaluable as the team makes the transition. Hartley is also the consummate professional. He has remained calm and measured throughout his time in Formula 1 thus far, worked hard and not been outlandish with his media appearances. He appears to be very popular and is well respected in the paddock. A couple of months ago it seemed Hartley would struggle to see out the season in Formula 1 – now it appears he will continue his dream in 2019 as well.- NZME
Cronulla captain Paul Gallen fears the Sharks could be left with a gaping hole at fullback if the club doesn’t fetch the signature of Valentine Holmes or Ben Barba. The 37-year-old, who decided to play on for a record 19th season last week, said Cronulla couldn’t afford to sit on their hands with Holmes weighing up his future and Ben Barba eyeing an NRL return. “(It) could ... be a problem for Flanno (coach Shane Flanagan) going forward,” Gallen said. “They’re going to throw everything they can to keep Val Holmes at the club long term.” - AAP

The postponement of yesterday’s trials at Foxton to next Tuesday has left Awapuni trainer Mark Oulaghan with a less-than-desirable pathway to Saturday week’s Gr.1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m) at Hastings and has led to the likely withdrawal of Shadows Cast from the weight-for-age sprint. “We were hoping to trial him today and that hasn’t happened. “We’ve decided not to trial at Taupo [on Wednesday] so we’ll give the first day at Hastings a miss,” Oulaghan said. “He handles soft going to a point but I don’t want to kick him off on a track that doesn’t suit. “We’ll just have to be a bit flexible and do the right thing by the horse.”

In brief Final spots elusive Ashburton College’s junior boys’ basketball teams have fallen just short of finals berths in South Canterbury competitions. The school’s junior A boys went down 43-37 to Roncalli in their junior A grade semi-final in Timaru on Friday night, while the junior B boys also went down 47-25 to Timaru Boys’ High School 10A. The Ashburton College junior B side had started the season in B grade but ended up making the top four in the A grade. In the senior competitions, the Ashburton College senior boys’ blue team went down 69-44 to TBHS 13A in the senior A grade’s semifinals, while the school’s senior boys’ red team lost 29-20 to the TBHS Pacers in their senior B grade semi-final. Ashburton College’s junior girls have also been in action, but in Christchurch, and claimed fifth spot in the Christchurch Intermediate Division I competition with a narrow 46-44 win over Kaiapoi last week.

Gold stars a highlight The handing out of three gold stars and a first championship title for one player has highlighted indoor bowls action in Ashburton over the past fortnight following two championship fours events on successive weeks. Two Saturdays ago, the Ashburton Indoor Bowls Association tried something a little different by holding one of their championship fours events as a drawn championship, in which
players’ names were drawn out to make up the teams. A pleasing field of 32 bowlers took to the mats for the tournament, with Russell Ellis leading his team of himself, Kevin Smith, Rod Webb and Jackie Gilbert who emerged victorious over Martin Nordqvist, Merv Gilbert, Jenny Nordqvist and Tom Palatchie. The title gave Kevin Smith his 10th championship and therefore his second gold star, while
for Jackie Gilbert it was her first championship event. The new format was well received by players and looks set to continue in the future. After his success the previous week, Russell Ellis returned on the weekend to earn himself another championship title when he teamed up with Geoff and Bernice Laird as well as Gaylene Smith to win the Open Championship Fours title.
The quartet saw off the challenge of Mat Bassett, Graeme Chapman, Robyn Atkinson and Maxine Chapman to take the title. Ellis claimed his 10th title and his second gold star with the victory while Geoff Laird picked up his first gold star for his fifth title. Tomorrow night the representative side will look to continue their fine season when they take on a Geraldine and Temuka side in Temuka.

Neville attacks Man Utd chief for reaction Manchester United chief Ed Woodward has been criticised for his reaction to the Red Devils’ 3-2 defeat at Brighton by former player Gary Neville. Woodward, United’s executive vice-chairman, remained in his seat after the match at the Amex Stadium where his team’s defensive failings were exposed time and again. United failed to bring in the new centre-back Jose Mourinho wanted during the summer and former defender Neville said Woodward, having handed him a contract extension until 2020 in January, had to back the Portuguese manager. “If Ed Woodward was going to
doubt Jose Mourinho, the time to doubt him was at the point whereby he should have said I’m not giving you a new contract last January,” Neville said on Sky Sports. “The minute he gave him a contract extension – which some may say was unnecessary halfway through a season – believing in the manager and showing the faith, he had to then buy him the centre-backs. “He had to get (Harry) Maguire and (Toby) Alderweireld because they wouldn’t have made those mistakes at Brighton.” Neville said Woodward’s actions at Brighton could be viewed as a “show of dissent”.

The Ashburton College and Mt Hutt College girls’ first XV will today have home ground advantage in the Aoraki secondary school girls’ rugby competition semi-finals for the first time ever. The Ash/Hutt girls are the defending champions and have a proud history in the competition in recent seasons, but this was the first year they’d been granted
a home semi-final fixture. The semi-finals and finals were traditionally held in Timaru, and the players were excited to get a chance to play finals footy on their home turf against Timaru Girls’ High School (TGHS) today. “We have beaten TGHS on the two previous occasions this season, so fingers crossed we can make the final in Timaru next week,” Ash/Hutt coach Grant Elvines said.
In last week’s final round robin games, Ash/Hutt were due to play Geraldine High School and although Geraldine had to default the match due to a lack of players, they still played a 10-aside match to give the girls a bit of a run around heading into the finals, Elvines said. Ash/Hutt were the defending champions, after going through the season unbeaten and defeating TGHS 64-40 in the final.
The year before that they lost just one game, and the year before that, they were unbeaten. This year their biggest opposition had come from another allgirls school, Timaru’s Craighead. Craighead had handed Ash/ Hutt their only loss this season. That 27-20 loss was in the season opener and when the two sides met for a second time this season it was Ash/Hutt that came away with the win 17-10.

If today’s semi-finals went the way they should on paper, then Craighead and Ash/Hutt would be the two teams left fighting it out for the title in Timaru next week. Today’s semi-final against TGHS will kick off at 4.30pm at the Celtic Rugby Club on Keenans Road, and Elvines and his team were hoping they’d get a heap of home-town support along to cheer them on.
