An Ashburton man has been sentenced to 10 months home detention after admitting six charges of assaulting his children and two of assaulting his wife. One of the assaults involved the man holding his son by his legs and swinging him into a wall. He struck his daughter with a Bible and repeatedly slapped her in a separate incident and also choked
his wife, the Ashburton District Court was told this week. The man said he was disciplining his family, actions that would be acceptable in his home country. Judge Ian Mill disagreed. “What you have done is committed crimes against your family.” The wife and children no longer live in Ashburton and are pro-
tected. A probation officer’s report said the man showed little remorse though defence lawyer Josh Lucas said that remorse might not have been obvious because of a language barrier. Judge Mill said the man’s wife and two children had been victims of his abuse for the past five years. “On an occasion when one of
the children kicked a ball and smashed a window you ordered the children into the bedroom, you picked up your son and threw him on to the bed then took hold of his legs and swung him around, striking him against a wall.

A plan to get Ashburton residents more clued up on all things elections is off to a slow start, but that has not dented the organiser’s hope for running regular events in the future. The first elections open day was held at Community House yesterday, and was organised by registrar of electors Gisela Craig. “Mostly we had people from the council and community groups coming through,” she said. “The hope is that word will
trickle down through those community groups and get the word out.” The open day displayed a large range of information around why you need to be enrolled to vote in elections and referendums, information about the general and Maori rolls, and a mock voting station to take people through the processes of casting a vote. Information was also available about the process if a person was unable to sign their own documents, or they needed to vote overseas.
“We get a lot of people that don’t update their addresses and we have to get in contact with them after elections and tell them their votes didn’t count,” she said. “They say ‘we enrolled when we were 18,’ but you have to update it every time you move.” Craig said the biggest thing was making sure the people of Ashburton were informed. “Hopefully we will be able to run these every two or three months and get more members of the public coming through,” she said.

Hoping to kick-start CBD revamp

In starting work on his four storey development on the corner of East and Burnett streets, businessman Willy Murney hopes his project will kick-start other CBD rebuilds. Currently the first steps in a construction project that will take all of next year to complete are being taken – eight metre plus piles being driven into the ground, but already, Murney said he was being approached by potential tenants for his multi-storey development. They’re a mix of retail and office. He’s in no rush to let, wanting the right mix of tenants for the prime inner town spot. “Looking at the interest shown already, I think it’ll go pretty well,” he said. A desire to see Ashburton’s town centre come back to life was one of the big drivers for building at this time, Murney said. “We’re doing this to help fix up the CBD, it’s a bit lacklustre at the moment and with what the council is planning for the streets, it should eventually look pretty good.” As well as providing new retail and commercial space on East Street, the project was also about creating an attractive and vibrant Burnett Street, he said.

Police had submitted the starting point for penalty was between 20 and 26 months in jail and the judge agreed, settling on 22 months which he converted to 10 months’ home detention. Judge Mill said the probation report noted that the man blamed his victims for what happened. “You said you are not a violent person and you only smacked your children when they were naughty. None of this is in the form of smacking. They are clearly assaults.”

plan town centre rebuilds to move those forward to help revitalise the CBD as quickly as possible and create a shopping environment that will attract not just locals but out of towners too.

Stern warning for drink driver A Westerfield man who crashed his car after drinking alcohol was given a stern warning by Ashburton District Court Judge Ian Mill this week. Ethan Daniel White, 22, a freezing worker, lost control of his car on the Methven highway on October 14 and ended up in hospital.
A sample of his blood showed 102 milligrams of alcohol. Police said the vehicle veered onto the grass verge, he over-corrected and went to the other side of the road, where he hit a power pole and fence, the vehicle rotating 180 degrees as it came to rest. White admitted charges of drink driving and careless use.
Others to appear before Judge Ian Mill this week: Benjamin William Galland pleaded guilty to assaulting his partner’s father. He was fined $300 and ordered to pay $130 court costs. Galland said he had apologised to the man: “We are all good now.” Glen Matthew Hamilton, 32, admitted dishonestly using a stolen paywave card to buy tobacco and other goods worth $165. Police said the paywave card was stolen from a wallet among belongings in a changing room at EA Networks Centre on May 31. Later that day Hamilton used the card at Mobil, then a few minutes later at BP and then shortly after at Z Energy. He told officers who arrested him he had been given the card by an unnamed person. Hamilton was remanded to December 17 for sentence. Hayden Jacob Young, 21, was breath-tested by police after driving his car up onto the
footpath on Harrison Street on November 14. He blew 759 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath. He admitted a charge of drink driving and was fined $800, disqualified from driving for six months and ordered to pay $130 court costs. “It was a silly thing to do. I won’t do it again,” he told the judge. An Ashburton man charged with assault, burglary and wounding with intent has been granted electronically monitored bail until the charges are dealt with next February. Dar-

Maki was disqualified indefinitely in 2006 and was caught driving on Walnut Avenue after going to buy groceries. His lawyer Gretchen Hart said it had been three years since his last conviction and he was trying to make better decisions. Judge Mill said taking steps to get his licence reinstated would help and gave him time to get the ball rolling. Jesse Hemi pleaded not guilty to two charges of aggravated
A special report has been ordered for Raymond Hemi, who is charged with assaulting police and failing to answer police bail. Hemi will be the subject of a special report assessing his fitness to plead to the charges. Lawyer Marilyn Gilchrist said previous charges faced by Hemi had also been the subject of special reports. He suffered a brain injury as a child, the result of an accident. “It is the responsibility of the ACC but over the years, for various reasons, that has not occurred,” she said. Hemi was remanded to January 21.
Bid for freedom stopped short by police A young man who tried to make a hasty exit from the dock at the Ashburton District Court this week was stopped in his tracks and bundled into the cell area. Judge Ian Mill was deciding where Gareth Michael Wright should stay on remand until the court could deal with a charge laid under child protection legis-
lation. Wright is a registrable offender and serving a sentence of intensive supervision following conviction for posting harmful digital communications. he was quickly restrained by police on duty in the courtroom. He was subdued while the court carried on its business. When he eventually returned, Wright was remanded to a Timaru address from today. He will appear again on December 3 to answer the charges against him.
Boil water notices The Ashburton District Council has issued precautionary boil water notices for those on the Methven and Mt Somers water supplies. Both have been attributed to high turbidity in the water believed to be caused by the exceptionally high rainfall being experienced in the district. The notices will remain in place until further advised by council.

Manslaughter charge A Christchurch man accused of causing a late-night car crash that killed a teenage girl and injured three others before allegedly fleeing the scene has been granted interim name suppression. The alleged driver, 19, sobbed in the dock of Christchurch District Court yesterday charged with the manslaughter of 18-year-old Alexia Chrissy-Marie Noble-Hazelwood. Meth dealing denied A Christchurch school teacher yesterday denied dealing methamphetamine. The teacher, in his 50s, first appeared at Christchurch District Court last month charged with possession of 1.5 grams of the Class A controlled drug for supply, as well as possession of a glass P pipe. He is jointly charged with a 46-yearold man. The teacher, who has interim name suppression, entered not guilty pleas yesterday. He has elected trial by jury. - NZME

Ashburton College’s youngest students will be giving back to the community next week when they take part in the college’s community services day next Wednesday. The day has been launched by the college’s new community services committee which is headed by William Hii. “We want to give something back to our community through actually getting out there and rolling up our sleeves,” he said. More than 250 Year 9 students will take part in the day, supported by about 50 staff from Ashburton College, and volunteers from Safer Ashburton and Volunteering Mid and South Canterbury. The activities will range from weeding, planting and landscaping in areas such as the Harris Reserve, Wakanui Beach, Argyle Park and an emergency and community organisations car wash. It is hoped the day will become a regular on the Ashburton College calendar, alongside other initiatives the committee started this year. These initiatives include regular visits to the Terrace View Retirement Village and assisting the Ashburton Youth Council with events such as the Bite Nite. Social media abuse, threats not on S
ocial media and the ability to post online has brought about many wonderful changes in our lives when it comes to how we interact with each other on a daily basis. But there’s a dark side to the business too, a troubling endemic which sees people appear as though they are above any form of jurisdiction and can freely comment without fear of retribution. At times of grief and tragedy it is often at its worst. They are moments where all normal way of thinking goes out the window and a nasty line of vitriol appears that most people would never dream
of posting. Yet, they do – and they do it in such a brutal manner that it’s hard not to be concerned for the mental well-being of those on the receiving end, irrelevant of the circumstances. Yesterday I read an online posting just like it and it was deeply troubling. It concerned the
tragic death of a young woman in Christchurch last weekend after a vehicle she was a passenger in crashed. There is more to the story than just that, the driver fled the scene. Then, two days later, he posted on his social media account that he couldn’t hide any more and was handing himself into the police. What followed was a tirade of abuse and threats, some which would have made even the hardiest of souls cringe at the very sight. In a time when that horrible black dog, suicide is an ever-lurking threat among the youth of New Zealand – there’s
just no need for it. But, instead of trying to stop the truly horrible comments, there were those who took it upon themselves to egg them on, encouraging further responses. Yes, this is an extreme case. A young person has died in tragic circumstances and her friends and family – all of whom have taken to the post to comment are looking for answers and resolution to their grief. But are death threats to someone else really the answer? Justice will naturally take its course and those responsible will be handed their punishment
through the court system as well as living with that guilt for their entire lives. Emotion is powerful, but when we deal in it we often tend to let things get a little out of control. Perhaps this is the core reason behind a lot of the mental health issues we are seeing currently – the rise and rise of online bullying and social media attacks, which are then in turn causing troubling problems for those who are in the direct line of such attacks. We should be better than that as a society. We can be better than that as a society. So, let’s do it.

y nominees for Outstanding Female Politicians of 2018 are: Theresa May, Angela Merkel and our very own, Jacinda Ardern. In the UK – thanks to the reckless promise of a referendum on Britain’s future – or otherwise – in the European Union (EU), made by her flighty predecessor, David Cameron – May was handed a toxic chalice full to the brim with a brew of vitriolic potential, the merest drop of which, spilt, inadvertently, on the smooth surface of the age-worn Cabinet table – at which William Gladstone and Benjamin Disraeli once sat – was always likely to lead to the instant resignation of one of her ever-sosensitive colleagues. But May is made of sterner stuff. There is about her a recognisably Churchillian aura, which enables her to “fight on the beaches” and never dream of surrendering. Thus, she has battled on via the chancelleries of Europe, bringing with her her latest solution to this intractable problem. Certainly no sign of surrender, even at this eleventh hour, which finds her attempting to persuade her fellow members in the House of Commons to back her latest – and last? – proposal. Despite the flabbiness of some of her male colleagues, who don’t seem to appreciate the necessity for Cabinet consistency, and resign – “dramatically” – when miffed by the refusal of colleagues to see it their way – May is still at the helm and undoubtedly prepared to go down with the ship, if absolutely unavoidable. The fact that senior Tories can still enjoy the luxury – and smugness – of “noble” resignation, comes only from the fact their party and its leader are most unlikely to “go to the country” if, as seems more than likely, that would let in the dreaded Labour leader, “born

again”, Jeremy Corbyn. In these ways and in her always unflappable – and immaculatelydressed appearance outside No. 10, and elsewhere – Theresa May has been the epitome of British doggedness and commitment. It may still not be enough to “get her over the EU line” but that will not be for lack of trying Merkel, too, has faced enormous political pressure this year, as, first, she had to fashion some sort of coalition government in Germany, after the indecisive election of September 2017. On that occasion, her own party, the CDU, did not do well enough to form a government of its own. However, led by Merkel, a long period of negotiation followed from which – through the sheer force of her personality and her powers of persuasion, Merkel emerged as Chancellor for the fourth consecutive parliament and as the major influence ensuring the future of the EU. She must now be seen as the key political figure in Europe, “fighting the good fight” against the dangerous resurgence of Nazi fanatics and other far right groups. She has also handled, with great skill and diplomacy – if not always to the taste of a good few of her country men and women – that hottest of topics, the absorption of many thousands of immigrants into her nation. In that, she has shown a strong attitude of Christian decency and concern so conspicuously absent in the rhetorical ravings
of Donald Trump. Merkel is now the “Grand Old Lady” of Germany, and well beyond, on whose personality and breadth of vision much of the rest of the world depends. Her warm relationship with the much younger Emmanuel Macron of France has been noted and much admired. Together the two of them can do much to ensure composure and compassion in Europe as Britain writhes in its European death throes. And then there’s Jacinda. She has undoubtedly been an inspiration to the nation this year. Both her ability and willingness to “go in to bat” – an expression she is herself fond of using – for the nation and for all of us lucky enough to live in it, has been outstanding. That she is so giftedly articulate is a huge advantage to her

the VP. Unlike the President of the United States he appeared to be listening to what she had to say and she to him. At home, Ardern has handled her creaky coalition with tact and good humour. She rules over a strange assortment of varying views, some of them long since redundant but her ineffable charm seems to conquer all. On her watch so far, it has to be said, though, that enormous amounts of money have been spent or promised on, and to, a range of undertakings, some of which border on the extravagant and almost inexplicable. Such, however, is the momentum Ardern generates, even the National Party has been slow to respond. (Although, in recent times, they have been preoccupied with their own internal wranglings.)

and her grasp of, and speedy response to, the curliest of media questions, has helped her to establish herself as a political phenomenon far beyond our restricted shores. That Mike Pence, VP of the United States wanted to sit next to her at the delegates’ dinner in Singapore last week shows how highly-rated she is on the world stage – and that even, without her partner and daughter in tow. It was mildly unfortunate Ardern found herself sitting next to the fairly dowdy-looking Karen Pence but she still seemed to get in a few significant words with

So these are three talented women, sure of what they want to achieve and with the strength of purpose and will to see that they do. May is under the greatest pressure but her political nous and experience may still see her through. Merkel is working towards well-earned retirement and the gratitude of a nation, while Ardern is still in the early stages of establishing the Labour Party as a realistic alternative to National and not just a temporary stop-gap while National blows its boilers, refuels and prepares for another long period in office.

Dispute ends in shooting An argument outside a Chicago hospital turned deadly when a man pulled out a gun and killed an emergency room doctor with whom he was having a domestic relationship, then ran into the hospital and fatally shot a pharmacy resident and a police officer, authorities said. The attacker also died yesterday but it was not clear if he took his own life or was killed by police at Mercy Hospital on the city’s South Side, Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said. Chicago “lost a doctor, pharmaceutical assistant and a police officer, all going about their day, all doing what they loved,” Mayor Rahm Emanuel said, fighting back tears. “This just tears at the soul of our city. It is the face and a consequence of evil.” Mercy Hospital said the staff who died were Tamara O’Neal, 38, an emergency room physician and Dayna Less, 25, a first year pharmacy resident who had recently graduated from Purdue University. The slain officer was identified as Samuel Jimenez, 28, who joined the department in February 2017 and had recently completed his probationary period, Johnson said. Police said he was married
On psychiatric hold Heather Locklear has been placed on a 5150 psychiatric hold after reportedly beating up her boyfriend. Locklear, 57, was taken to a hospital after her therapist determined that she was having a mental breakdown, TMZ reports. The Hollywood star was at her home, and a third party called 911 for her before she was taken to hospital, the New York Post reports. There have been conflicting reports about whether her boyfriend, former American Motorcycle Association motocross racer Chris Heisser, was actually there at the time.

Shock as Nissan’s Ghosn held in probe The arrest of Nissan Motor Co.’s chairman Carlos Ghosn on charges he under-reported his income and misused company funds caused the company’s shares to tumble and left many in Japan shocked by his downfall. Prosecutors said they were holding Ghosn for allegedly collaborating to falsify securities statements and underreport Ghosn’s income. A second Nissan executive, Greg Kelly, was also suspected of collaborating with him to under-report some $44.6 million in Ghosn’s income from 2011-2015.
Carlos Ghosn Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said yesterday that the government was watching for economic fallout from the scandal at one of the
world’s biggest automakers. “It’s extremely regrettable,” Suga said of the arrest. “We will watch the development closely.” Ghosn was arrested on Monday and Nissan’s CEO Hiroto Saikawa said the company’s board will meet on Thursday to approve his dismissal. Prosecutors refused to say where he was being held in Tokyo. There was no word from Ghosn himself about the situation. He reportedly was questioned and arrested shortly after arriving Monday from overseas aboard a private jet. The Brazilian-born executive
became one of the auto industry’s most powerful executives by engineering a turnaround at Nissan and leading the company for nearly two decades. The scandal abruptly threw into question Ghosn’s future as leader of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance, which sold 10.6 million cars last year, more than any other manufacturer. Saikawa, in a 90-minute news conference late Monday, said the company was overdue for some change and that power had been too heavily concentrated in one person. - AP

Three held over ‘chilling’ gun plan – police Australian police say they have arrested three men who were plotting to commit a terror attack in Melbourne. The group had been attempting to source a semiautomatic rifle to kill as many people as possible in a crowded place, authorities said. The suspects – aged 21, 26 and 30 – were allegedly inspired by the Islamic State group. There was no ongoing threat to the public, said Chief Com-
missioner Graham Ashton. Ashton said the men had not settled on a location for the alleged attack, but their planning had “escalated” in recent days. “They were certainly looking at a place of mass gathering, where there would be crowds, because they were trying to focus on trying to have a place where they could kill as many people as possible,” he told reporters yesterday. Ashton said the suspects
arrested yesterday had become “more energised” in the past week, but it was unclear whether this was due to increased public discussion about terrorism. The three men, all Australian citizens of Turkish descent, were arrested in police raids in Melbourne’s north-west on Tuesday. Two are brothers, police said. The group had been tracked by authorities since last year and recently had their pass-
ports cancelled over fears they would engage in terrorism activity overseas, Ashton said. Police said the men had been in the process of acquiring a semi-automatic .22 calibre rifle. The stock, which has polarised opinion in the investment community, has been under fire from various quarters over share sales by top management, worries about the regulations in China, and ongoing scepticism about the validity of claims around its a1 beta free milk – this time from the US dairy sector. The company says its a1 beta protein free milk can be beneficial for people who have trouble digesting standard milk, which contains both the a1 and a2 beta proteins. In an earnings update issued at the annual meeting in Melbourne, a2 Milk said its net profit shot up by 64.5 per cent to $86 million in the first four months of its financial year, compared with the corresponding period last year – a record. Revenue for the four months came to $368.4m, up 40.5 per cent over the same period last year, which was at the top end of market expectations. The company turned in a net profit after tax of $195.7 million the June year, up 116 per cent over the previous year’s. Chief executive Jayne Hrdlicka said she was not concerned about a bid by the US National Milk Producers Federation to get a2 Milk to row back on its US advertising claims. Senior federation executive and
lawyer Clay Detlefsen has called on a2 Milk to “defend and subs t a n t i a t e” its advertising and marketing claims, and to participate in an official process started by the federation’s complaints. Hrdlicka said she was confident a2 Milk would be successful in the US, where it has lifted its points of distribution by 50 per cent in the first four months. “We know that we are rattling the big US dairy players because we are in effect shaking up the category and we know that we are taking market share in all segments of milk consumption,” she said. “At our heart we are a disrupter. It has taken this company a lot of time to get to a strong position today and that’s because we are dogged in doing the right thing by consumers.” Shane Solly, portfolio manager at Harbour Asset Management – which has a stake in a2 Milk – said the company had made inroads into the US, repeating a pattern that started with a big incursion into the Australian fresh milk market where it now has 10 per cent of the market and 33 per cent of the infant formula market there. “While the US dairy industry may not be seen as being particu-
larly innovative, the retailers are,” Solly said. “But they have a long way to go.” A2 Milk was skimpy about its prospects for the full year, other than to say that it expected strong revenue growth to continue but at a slightly more moderate rate than in the first four months. Hrdlicka said the company had a well managed “daigou” unofficial trading network in China and had been anticipating rule changes governing the trade – announced in August – for some time. Momentum in China infant formula – where it now has 5.6 per cent market share – has continued to build for a2 Milk. “As we have said on several occasions, the a2 Milk Company and our well managed daigou network, have been anticipating and preparing for these changes for some time,” she said. – NZME

So far, her business has sold around 7000 sets of the bands and is gearing up to launch new products ahead of Christmas, though she is tight-lipped on what these will be. “We wanted to own a business but we never expected this,” Wong says. “We haven’t planned to have a warehouse, but if things carry on the way they are going I can see it happening in the next six months.” The pair say they aren’t worried about resistance bands being a current fad and had named the business accordingly to be able to introduce new products. “The market is becoming saturated with resistance bands ... we’re not worried because we have goals to expand and that’s why we have called ourselves Peach Builder, because we don’t want to just be selling bands.” – NZME

The internet saw it with Iyia Liu’s waist trainer and it is happening again with another trendy product plastered over social media: the resistance band. A Palmerston North couple who sell the training bands designed to enhance the derrière spent $16,000 to get their e-commerce business started and have since turned over $280,000. Micah Hatch, 29, and Jessica Wong, 26, started The Peach Builder Co in February and have used Instagram, social media influencers, including Shaaanxo and Lauren Curtis, and online giveaways to drive sales and brand awareness. On average the pair send out around 300 orders per week and expect their sales to exceed $1 million by April next year. “I work out at the gym and used to get quite a sore lower back. I would squat quite heavy and often found I was injuring my lower back so I did a quick Google search on things that could help, came across resistance bands, started using them ... and realised
there was a gap in the market for them,” Wong says. Wong says she could not find resistance bands locally so decided to import around 500 from China – which sold out within the first month. “We ran out of stock a couple of times, but the demand was there so we kept on ordering.” Fast-forward almost nine months, the couple has sold thousands of resistance bands, placed eight shipping orders and trademarked the name The Peach Builder Co. Most sales of the bands are going to Australia, its main market, and the brand has 45,000 followers on Instagram and just over 10,000 on Facebook. The Peach Builder Co relies on Instagram and influencers to post about its product, using on average two influencers per month. It also uses Facebook marketing. “Social media marketing and influencer marketing is still not taken as seriously as it should be. We’ve seen the power of it and we’ve seen other companies see the power of it,” Hatch says. “Everyone is on their phones

Salads have come of age The weather might be something of a rollercoaster ride of hot and cold, but in amongst the odd chilly day, the warm spring days scream salads. Whether those salads are the main meal or whether they accompany the main event, they can be stars in their own right. Gone are the days when shredded lettuce, tomato, cucumber and hard boiled egg made a salad. Today salads have come of age and just about any ingredient can be right at home in a salad bowl.
Lamb, pumpkin and chickpea salad 3T olive oil Salt and pepper 1kg butternut pumpkin, peeled and cubed 1 piece (300g) lamb backstrap 1 400g tin chickpeas, drained and rinsed 2 red onions, quartered 1 punnet grape tomatoes, halved 100g low-fat feta cheese, cubed 2C (150g) baby rocket Dressing 1/2 C balsamic vinegar 3T olive oil 1 clove garlic, crushed 1t honey
Ham and bean salad
Top-notch potato salad
250g green beans, trimmed 425g can four bean mix, well drained 100g feta, diced 1C cooked diced ham, chicken or turkey 1/2 C cherry tomatoes, halved 1/2 red onion, finely sliced 3C salad leaves 1T fresh basil or parsley leaves 1T fresh basil or parsley leaves 1/4-1/2 C viniagrette
700g baby new potatoes, scrubbed 1 sprig mint 150g sliced salami 1/2 C mayonnaise 4t wholegrain mustard 4-5 gherkins, sliced 4 radishes, sliced 3 spring onions, sliced 1-2T flat-leaf parsley leaves
■ Blanch green beans by plunging into boiling water for 2-3 minutes. ■ Drain and cool quickly by rinsing in cold water. ■ In a bowl, toss together drained bean mix, green beans, feta, ham, cherry tomatoes, and red onion. ■ Stir through vinagrette. ■ Arrange alternate layers of salad greens and bean mixture on plates. ■ Scatter with fresh basil or parsley. ■ Serve with crusty bread.
■ Cook new potatoes in boiling salted water with a sprig of mint until just tender. ■ In a non-stick frying pan, panfry the salami until crisp. ■ Remove, draining any fat off before adding to the salad. ■ Combine mayonnaise with mustard and gherkins. ■ Drain cooked potatoes and rinse in cold water, drain well. ■ Turn into a salad bowl with remaining ingredients. ■ Toss with mayonnaise mixture. ■ Serve scattered with parsley leaves.
Roasted cauliflower salad 1 cauliflower 4T olive oil 2 cloves of garlic, finely chopped 15-20 olives, pitted and chopped Juice of 1 lemon Zest of 1/2 a lemon 1 fresh chilli, finely chopped 1/2 C walnuts chopped 1/4 C flat-leaf parsley, chopped ■ Preheat oven on bake, to 180°C. ■ Cut cauliflower into florets and toss with 2T olive oil and the garlic until coated. ■ Place baking paper on a baking tray and spread florets out in an even layer. ■ Roast for 20 minutes (or until tender), turning every 10 minutes to get even caramelisation. ■ Remove from oven and place in a bowl. ■ Toss with remaining olive oil, olives, lemon juice and zest, chilli, walnuts and parsley.
■ Preheat oven to 220°C/200°C fan-forced. ■ Line a baking tray with baking paper. ■ In a large bowl, place the 3T olive oil and salt and pepper. ■ Add cubed pumpkin and lamb backstrap. ■ Toss all to coat in oil and lay the pumpkin on the baking tray. ■ Bake pumpkin for 20 minutes. ■ While the pumpkin is roasting, panfry the lamb backstrap for 2-3 mins each side. ■ Place on a plate to rest until the pumpkin is ready. ■ In a serving dish, toss together the chickpeas, onions, tomatoes, feta and rocket. ■ In a small bowl, whisk together the salad dressing ingredients. ■ Slice the lamb. ■ Leave the pumpkin to cool for a few minutes after removing from the oven. ■ Toss with the rest of the salad ingredients. ■ Drizzle with salad dressing and top with sliced lamb.
Asparagus and kumara salad 400-500g kumara, cut into 3cm chunks A drizzle of olive oil 2T red wine vinegar 2t sugar 1/2 red onion, thinly sliced 250g asparagus, trimmed 1/4 C chopped parsley 1/2 C roasted, chopped walnuts 1/4 C parmesan, shaved Dressing: 2t wholegrain mustard 2t liquid honey 2T extra virgin olive oil 1T red wine vinegar ■ Preheat oven to 200°C. ■ Line an oven tray with baking paper. ■ Toss kumara with a good drizzle of olive oil on prepared tray. ■ Season with salt and pepper, and roast for about 25 minutes or until golden and tender. ■ Mix red wine vinegar and sugar together and add red onion. ■ Leave to marinate for about 15 minutes. ■ Drain, reserving vinegar for the dressing. ■ Cook asparagus but leave it with a little bite. ■ Drain and place in a bowl of iced water to quickly cool, then drain. ■ Mix all dressing ingredients together. ■ Toss roast kumara, asparagus, parsley, walnuts ■ Add half the dressing, half the pickled red onion and half the parmesan. ■ Scatter over remaining pickled red onion and parmesan, and drizzle with remaining dressing.

Front-runner holds off rivals Amanda Ward saw off all challengers to secure victory in Tinwald Cycling Club’s race on Sunday. Ward took out the 48km handicap Canterbury Tree Topping Ltd event around the Wakanui Beach block, after starting off the front mark. Ward made a solo bid for glory early and would have been only too aware that the chasing group were making a solid charge to the line, but she held on bravely to
find the line first and lift the Ineson Cup, with the chasing group finishing inside 20 seconds behind. Shane Brookland led the bunch in to secure second place and fastest time honours, riding the distance in 69.56 minutes, while Myles O’Donnell made his trip south from Prebbleton worthwhile, securing the third place spoils. Fourth placegetter Steve Hands took second best time,
while Richard Kirwan and Paul Macfie rounded out the top six in a tight finish. The juniors and division 2 contested a 16km handicap event and Zac Brookland made it a good day for the Brookland barn, securing the victory with a well-executed ride. Brooke Wylie produced a top shelf effort to claim the secondplace spoils, while Zoe Spillane continued her good form to take the final podium position. Mitch Brookland ensured he
didn’t leave empty-handed with a good ride to take fourth spot, ahead of the fast finishing Caitlin Titheridge who lifted fastest time honours, riding the course in 28.53 minutes. In the race for division two honours Janette Hooper turned the tables on the race the week before to take victory from Harriet Sutton and Debbie Skinner. This Sunday the club travels to Mt Somers to contest a 45km mass start event.

Sharks release NFL hopeful Holmes By Darren Walton Cronulla have granted Valentine Holmes a release from his NRL contract so the representative ace can pursue a career in the NFL. The Sharks released a statement yesterday saying under the terms of the release Holmes will not be permitted to play for any other NRL club in 2019 should his American plans not work out. Holmes has just returned from a holiday in the US where he is
said to have viewed an NFL franchise in the hope of following in the footsteps of Jarryd Hayne, who earned a contract with the San Francisco 49ers in 2015. “This news brings great disappointment to the Cronulla Sharks, who have worked hard to re-sign Holmes to a five-year extension, which would have made him the highest-paid player in the club’s history. “While this is in no way the outcome the club planned for, there was no option but to grant
a release to Holmes. “Under the terms of the release, if Holmes is unsuccessful in the NFL and wants to return to the NRL in 2019, it will be with the Cronulla Sharks only – Valentine will not be eligible to play for any other NRL club during 2019.” Holmes acknowledged the Sharks’ understanding and support of his decision, while confirming he would enter fresh discussions with the club about his rugby league career if his American dream doesn’t pan out.
“I will be forever grateful to the Cronulla Sharks Football Club and the Sharks fans for the past five years of support,” he said. “It was a special moment we all shared winning the club’s first ever NRL premiership (in 2016).” Grand final-winning former team-mate Luke Lewis is backing Holmes to make a successful transition to American football. Dane Coles has given an insight into where the All Blacks are keen to improve. All Blacks coach Steve Hansen admitted after last weekend’s loss to Ireland that his side is stuck between the old and the new in terms of attempting to evolve certain aspects of their game. Hansen identified decisionmaking as a key failure in Dublin. He said had the All Blacks gone with their new way of thinking, more opportunities could have been created and executed. Instead, Ireland’s suffocating pressure stifled the All Blacks, preventing them from scoring a try. After arriving in Rome ahead of their final test of the season, Coles explained the All Blacks were grappling with friction between instinctive talent and sticking to game-plans. “We’ve got some of the best players in the world who just play what they see in front of them,” Coles said. “In the weekend everything we did Ireland were there. We didn’t break them down. “They were just everywhere, they played their hearts out. “We’ve got guys reacting to situations and sometimes that’s going out of your structure and playing what’s in front of you so we’re still trying to find that balance. “It’s a tough one because you definitely need that structure in the game and then you need to react and play and we’re still trying to find that so hopefully we can find a few solutions from the weekend’s game.” Rather than relying on individuals to spark attacking movements, Coles said it was about getting set early and providing clear options. The All Blacks appeared uncharacteristically rattled at times in Dublin where they were caught shuffling sideways rather than runners punching onto the ball at pace. “The big thing is to trust what you see. We probably didn’t do that in the weekend. “There was some space and we didn’t see it and didn’t make the right call.” - NZME

Invincibility aura gone O
n Sunday morning, New Zealand rugby fans were once again shown just how much the gap between us and the rest of the world has closed. A few years ago, seeing New Zealand ranked at number one in the world with Ireland at two would have seemed unimaginable, but that’s what the world rankings say right now. And if you listen to what the Irish media are saying, the Irish have leap-frogged us to take the number one spot thanks to their 16-9 win at the weekend. The Irish were pretty darn happy with the win, and for good reason. To not only beat the All Blacks, but to score one of the tries of the season against them and at the same time keep the men in black try-less, was a huge moment in Irish rugby. It was only the second time the Irish had ever beaten the All Blacks, and just what the result meant to both teams was plain to see when Brodie Retallick dropped the ball with time up and the final whistle was blown. All Blacks were down on their
haunches, while the Irish went bananas, both on and off the field. It was like they’d just won the World Cup, which – given the way things are looking right now – may be something that could become a reality in years to come. A test match between the All Blacks and Ireland right now was up there with a Bledisloe Cup match in terms of intensity, drama and skill, and that was a great thing. At the 63-minute mark, Ireland were up 16-6 and hard on defence, when referee Wayne Barnes blew a penalty in their favour. The reaction of the players said it all. Fist pumps in the air and cries of ‘yeah’ – it was as though they had won the game already, and it was clear that this was a massive game for the Irish. A few minutes later a high tackle gave the All Blacks a chance to add another three to their tally, and they had to take it. They’d thrown a heck of a lot at the Irish defence and not been able to find a way through, so they took the chance to lessen the gap to seven with 11 minutes to go, set-

ting up what could have been a classic nail-biting finish. But the Irish had an answer for everything. When Kieran Read and Ben Smith fumbled the ball at the back with seven minutes to go and were bundled backwards over the sideline, the Irish reactions again said it all. The All Blacks produced another lineout steal to defuse that situation and keep themselves in the game, but they just couldn’t find a way through the defence. More than once during that game one of the commentators declared ‘this is the All Blacks at their best’, after a terrific run which amounted to nothing. Yes, the All Blacks were at their best at times on Sunday morning, but unfortunately their best just
wasn’t enough on this occasion. The Irish are passionate people, in life and in sport. The desire in the Irish players’ eyes to notch up that second win against the best rugby team in the world was plain to see. Sunday morning’s game was the 31st time the two countries had played each other since 1905, and for the majority of that history it had been New Zealand on top. The Irish only beat us for the first time two years ago, in that memorable match played on neutral turf in Chicago. Sunday’s second ever win against the mighty All Blacks was deserved. The Irish defence was heroic, and in a game made up of moments the Irish simply took theirs, whereas the All Blacks didn’t. The Irish were simply a better team on the day. The All Blacks are still great – they are still a skilful and talented team – and in the eyes of most rugby playing nations we are the team to beat, but a couple of times this year teams have proven that although we are good, we are not invincible.

Upset test win Pakistan succumbed to debutant spinner Ajaz Patel’s five-wicket haul and lost the first test against New Zealand by four runs on Monday. Needing 139 more runs with all 10 wickets in hand on the fourth day, Pakistan was bowled out for 171 with Patel taking 5-59 and Wagner claiming 2-27. Azhar Ali (65) and Asad Shafiq (45) seemed to have carried Pakistan to victory with an 82-run fourth wicket stand before Wagner broke through just before lunch by having Shafiq caught behind. Babar Azam’s (10) run out in a mixup with Azhar triggered the collapse as Pakistan lost its last six wickets for only 24 runs. Azhar was the last man to be dismissed when Patel had him leg before wicket as New Zealand recorded its narrowest test victory in terms of runs. “My game plan was very simple, we as a unit believed we can do something special here and everything went our way,” said Patel, a 30-yearold left-arm spinner. “Lot of credit goes to the environment around us because we keep it very relaxed.” New Zealand, who conceded a 74run first innings lead, were bowled out for 249 in their second innings,
giving the visitors an overall lead of 175 runs. The Black Caps fought to successfully defend the second smallest target in their test history with Patel and Wagner making the run-chase difficult for Pakistan on a wearing wicket. Azhar shielded No. 11 batsman Mohammad Abbas for 7.4 overs to get the last precious 12 runs before he was outdone by Patel’s guile with Pakistan narrowly falling short. Azhar’s third half century in six test matches this year featured five boundaries and came off 136 balls. “We knew the surface was not easy and we saw this throughout from both sides. It’s a great advertisement for test cricket that it came down to the wire,” New Zealand captain Kane Williamson said. “From our prospective we ended on the right side, we showed the fighting attitude.” Wagner, who bowled an unchanged 13-over spell with lot of energy, also had Yasir Shah caught in the slips as Pakistan lost five wickets for 17 runs after lunch. “It’s very disappointing to lose it,” Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed said. “We had an opportunity (to win) but we will try not to repeat mistakes in the next two test matches.” The second test begins in Dubai on Saturday. - AP

More Kiwis at the Interdoms By Michael Guerin New Zealand’s Inter Dominion assault could swell to seven after some surprise additions. The annual trans-Tasman harness racing series returns to Victoria on Saturday week and has the added bonus of the return of the trotting series, which was last held in 2012. Both series will consist of three rounds of heats spread across Victoria and 2760m mobile finals at Melton on December 15 but the series, like last week’s New Zealand Cup, has been hit by the extraordinary number of injuries, retirements and overseas sales in the open class ranks this year. But while a brutal Cup week in Christchurch last week suggested New Zealand could have only two

But with driving sons Nathan, Brad and Matthew so busy at home, Williamson will use Anthony Butt as the pair’s driver. Jip Jip Rock has shown plenty of promise, including a last-start victory at Te Aroha. Cran Dalgety is leaning toward going to Melbourne as the Inter Dominion final could be no stronger than the Auckland Cup. “I am talking to the owner about it and he gets the final call but I am keen to go,” says Dalgety. In the trotting series Speeding Spur was always likely to go and after jogging out soundly for trainers John and Josh Dickie on Monday morning he will be in the series barring anything unforseen happening this week.

Rivalry? What rivalry? BY LAINE CLARK Holden’s Shane van Gisbergen has played down his feud with championship rival Scott McLaughlin before this weekend’s Supercars series decider, dismissing it as a media beat up. In the closest championship in a decade, McLaughlin will head to Newcastle with just a 14 point lead over fellow Kiwi van Gisbergen after their title duel appeared to get personal in the previous round in Auckland. In what was a string of incidents, van Gisbergen appeared to cross the line when he parked so close to McLaughlin’s Falcon after beating his rival in the round’s opening race that the humiliated series leader couldn’t get out of his car as live TV cameras rolled. Van Gisbergen’s Red Bull Racing team manager Mark Dutton didn’t help matters when he described the incident that left McLaughlin fuming as “funny”. An unimpressed McLaughlin,
25, later made it clear he hoped to get the last laugh by claiming his maiden championship on Newcastle’s tough street circuit. But van Gisbergen, 29, insisted he had no problem with McLaughlin as he attempts to add to his 2016 championship title.

Youngest GP winner Turkish rider Can Oncu has won his maiden Moto3 race to become the youngest grand prix winner in motorcycling at age 15. Making his debut at the Valencia Grand Prix, Oncu secured the historic victory by taking advantage of crashes in front of him on a wet track. Organisers of Sunday’s Longbeach Coastal Challenge have their fingers and toes crossed that when 1000-odd competitors line up at the start line for the day’s events, the sun will be shining down on them. Online entries for the 12th running of the Ruralco Longbeach Coastal Challenge are due to close tonight and just who will take out this year’s main event – the 35km mountain bike race – is anyone’s guess, with the winner from the past few years unable to compete this year. biker Anton Cooper was one of the event’s ambassadors and has attended all bar two of the events over the past 12 years, but he is unable to take part this year due to family commitments, race spokesperson Anna Jemmett said. The Longbeach Coastal Challenge had grown over the years, both in terms of the numbers competing, and the events on offer. What started out as an event solely for mountain bikers, now includes races for runners and walkers too, and at its peak attracted 1400 competitors in its 10th anniversary year. An event run entirely by vol-
unteers from the Hinds and Districts Lions Club and Longbeach School, and raced over the picturesque Longbeach Estate, all proceeds from the event go back into the community. It is a big job, with members of the Hinds Lions group spending countless hours out on the land marking out tracks in the days leading up to the event. Due to things like crop rotations and the weather, the courses the longer events took tended to vary from year to year, Jemmett said. That was part of the reason why a lot of people came back year after year to compete, she said. In virtually all but the 5km
walk/run event, there were a few challenges along the way including water crossings. “At the end of the day it’s not a walk around a paddock or around the domain, it’s a coastal challenge and there’s a bit of up and down and fun involved,” Jemmett said. Although Cooper would not be there to reclaim his crown on Sunday, he has donated a signed jersey which would go to whoever crossed the finish line first in the 35km event. Cooper’s winning time last year was just under 1.20 hours, and one of the other memorable performances on the day came from
Ashburton multisporter Matt Clough, who won the 21km half marathon event and kept running straight to his bike for the 23km mountain bike event, in which he came second. The Longbeach Coastal Challenge offered something for everything, with the running events covering 21km, 12km and 5km distances, with 12km and 5km options for walkers, and 35km, 23km and 12km family rides for the mountain bikers.
