Crash pair lay dead for several hours The two people killed in a horrific crash in Pakuranga are believed to be teenagers. Pakuranga residents reported hearing a “loud bang” about 4.30am yesterday before two people were found dead in a crashed car in Pakuranga about 7.30am. Police said speed appeared to be a factor in the crash in which the pair, a male and a female, were killed. Senior Sergeant Jono Chappell said investigations have found that the crash took place at about that time. “Early indications suggest that speed appears to be a factor in this crash, however this will form part of the investigation by our Serious Crash Unit.” A bunch of flowers lay at the scene of the crash. A patch of torn up grass marks where the car appeared to have come off the road.

Two street lights had been knocked over and a fence on the side of Pakuranga Road was crumpled and partially ripped off. One woman told the Herald her mother heard the crash in the early hours but she herself did not hear anything until the steady sound of sirens later in the morning. The car had veered off Pakuranga Road and crashed into a building near Udys Rd and Johns Lane. It was severely damaged and split into at least four pieces. The building contains a number of businesses, including a dentist’s practice. Police were called to the incident about 7.20am. The Serious Crash Unit attended. The deaths have been referred to the Coroner. - NZME

Silver Ferns coach resigns Janine Southby has resigned as Silver Ferns coach. Southby has stepped down in wake of Netball New Zealand’s Independent Review of the 2018 Commonwealth Games campaign. The Ferns missed out on a medal in Australia after losing to Malawi, England, Australia and Jamaica. Southby was widely criticised for her selections and rotation strategy during her tenure, while her record of winning just six of 18 games across the Ferns’ most recent international season (including 11 straight losses to Tier One nations Australia, England and Jamaica)

led to calls for her sacking. Further confirming New Zealand’s recent demise in the netball world, the Ferns fell out of the top two of the Netball Federation rankings this month for the first time since the rankings began in 2008. “Earlier today I accepted Janine Southby’s resignation from her role as Silver Ferns head coach,” said Netball New Zealand CEO Jennie Wyllie. “I am very sad to have reached this point,” Southby said yesterday. Fifty-eight years of unflinching commitment to the Ashburton Variety Theatre have paid off for Alan “Mac” McQuarters. The founding member was named as the society’s new patron at a ceremony on Thursday night. Family, friends and society members gathered to hear the announcement before the society held a celebratory supper. President Kim Vessey said McQuarters was very deserving of

the new role. “Alan has two big loves. One is the fire brigade and the other is our society,” she said. The Ashburton Variety Theatre’s past patron, Mona Reddicliffe, passed away earlier this year, and among a number of worthy candidates, the committee felt that McQuarters stood out. First to welcome him to his role was Reddicliffe’s daughter, and many others have since shared their congratulations and pride. When he first received a visit

from Vessey asking if he would like to be patron, McQuarters told members he felt so humbled and blessed. “I jumped from one side of the room and said ‘why me’?” As an avid ambassador of the musical arts in Ashburton, McQuarters also saw the Ashburton Trust Event Centre grow from a dream to a reality. He has previously been awarded life membership to the society, and in 2012 won the Queen’s Service Award for services to the community.

Stand-out flooring apprentice sweeps stage at awards By Matt MarkhaM

An Ashburton apprentice has gained national recognition at the BCITO Flooring Awards in Auckland this week. Kenneth Aitken, who works for Skip-2-It Carpets and Curtains Ltd, was awarded the Stage 2 Flooring Apprentice of the Year Award and was on hand to receive his prize. Award winners are selected based on the achievement and skills they display at courses provided by the Allied Trades Institute throughout the year. Skip-2-It’s Skip Muir said that Aitken was fully deserving of the award. “It’s a really great achievement for him, he’s done a fantastic job,” he said. Muir said that Aitken’s entry into the world of trades wasn’t a traditional one, instead spurred by a connection through sport – in this case hockey. At the time he was working at the Fairton meat processing plant and with work slowing down, he took up an offer to give Muir a hand. “He was actually doing me a favour, but when things got pretty grim out at the works, I offered him a job and he took the opportunity. “He’s shown promise from the outset.” Skip-2-It looks to employ around half a dozen staff at a time and Muir said it was Aitken’s “level head” that helped him with the requirements of trade. “He’s a bit older than the usual apprentices you get out of schools or something similar and

I noticed at the awards that a lot of the people up on stage getting awards were older people. “Already he’s talking about wanting to get back up there and get the next award on the list which is the supreme one.” Allied Institute principal tutor, Jeff Henry said Aitken was a standout entry. “Ken showed he has the whole package,” he said. “He has a natural ability to get on well with everyone and was always conscious of doing his best whether it was theory or practical. Everything Ken did was with confidence and quality.” BCITO chief executive, Warwick Quinn said the awards were a great recognition of achievement. “The awards are a fantastic opportunity for our top performing trainees to be celebrated by their peers,” he said. “All the winners are fantastic role models who are already proving themselves in the industry.” Last year 1221 people were employed in the flooring trade in Canterbury while it is predicted that over the next four years that number will increase by 100 workers, however in order to fill new roles and replace people retiring, more than 400 people will be required for the trade in Canterbury. Visitors could pay multiple times Tourism operators are welcoming a proposed tourism levy but say they’re concerned visitors could end up paying multiple times to go on the Department of Conservation (DOC) land. In a submission to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, Tourism Export Council of New Zealand (TECNZ) says the proposed International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy is welcomed, as local Councils and by default ratepayers can’t continue to foot the bill for tourism infrastructure when tourism demand outstrips the day to day needs of local communities. “The projected $57 $80 million

raised needs to be reinvested back into tourism across infrastructure and conservation initiatives and transparency in spending is important.” TECNZ Chief Executive Judy Chen said. There is also concern that visitors could be hit with multiple fees for conservation, first through the Visitor Levy and then when visiting DOC estates through commercial operators who already pay a concession accessing the area. “Paying to access the conservation estate is nothing new. Tourism operators have paid a concession to DOC for years and these costs are passed to the visitor. This new levy effectively means our vis-

Aust minister: I make no apologies By Lucy Bennett Australian Immigration Minister Peter Dutton has addressed the stoush between himself and Justice Minister Andrew Little, saying he makes no apology for deporting criminals and will continue to do so. He did not directly address an issue central to Little’s criticism this week of Australia’s deportation policy, the good character test under which people can be deported arbitrarily, which Little called the grounds “amorphous and tenu-

ous”. Speaking at a press conference in Australia yesterday, Dutton was asked about Little’s comments. “I’m no friend of criminals, let’s be very clear about it ... and I’m going to continue to do it, and the law is very clear.” Little, who appeared on the ABC’s Foreign Correspondent programme this week along with Foreign Affairs and acting Prime Minister Winston Peters, was critical of Australia’s deportation policies, saying there appeared to be a venal, political strain to them and “certainly not consistent with any

humanitarian ideals that I thought both countries once shared”. Speaking to Australian radio on Thursday, Dutton said Little might want to reflect a little more on the trans-Tasman relationship. “There’s a lot that we do for New Zealand ... We’re a big land mass between them and boats coming from Indonesia and Southeast Asia,” Dutton said. “New Zealand don’t contribute really anything to the defence effort that we’ve got where we’re trying to surveil boats that might be on their way to New Zealand.

“So I hope that Andrew Little reflects a little more on the relationship between Australia and New Zealand where we do a lot of the heavy lifting. We intercept boats which stop them from making their way to New Zealand. “There’s a lot to this relationship and I was really disappointed in Mr Little’s comments during the week. I hope that he doesn’t repeat them,” Dutton said. Little said yesterday he wasn’t sure which comments Dutton was referring to. “I think it’s the general tone that

Show brings popular kids’ book to life One of the most popular children’s books in history will come to life on the Ashburton stage in October. Few children’s books have stood the test of time quite like Dr Seuss’s 200-word masterpiece, The Cat In The Hat, and as popular as it was when the book was written in the 1950s it remains the same to this day. Now, a stage show has been created to bring the book to life and it will show at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre on Wednesday, October 10 for two shows, one at 10am and the other at 12.30pm. The play was adapted for the stage in 2009 by the National Theatre of Great Britain and tells the story consistent with the book of two children at home who are bored and are visited by the cat with the red and white striped hat. Over 12 months of planning, The Cat in the Hat tour features a full scale set of the house and over 70 props which the cast use to bring to life every detail of the book. Clear road map needed for emissions Federated Farmers supports moves to significantly reduce emissions and meet New Zealand’s Paris Agreement commitments but says this should not be at the expense of Kiwis’ economic and social wellbeing. “We need that clear road map to a low net emissions economy and a long-term plan of action that endures political cycles. But New Zealand should not lock itself into an inflexible approach that disadvantages us more than other nations,” Feds climate change spokesperson Andrew Hoggard says. “In the decades to 2050 we’ll also be grappling with the major cost implications of an ageing population. We must have regard for the impact various net zero

options would have on emissions prices and on GDP, jobs and incomes.” In its submission on the Zero Carbon Bill, Federated Famers said the best option of the three put forward in the Our Climate Your Say discussion paper was the two baskets approach that focused on reductions in longlived greenhouse gas emissions (carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide) while stabilising short-lived emissions (methane). Hoggard said New Zealand’s primary industries earned 64 per cent of the total merchandise export income in 2017/18, not to mention the several billion dollars of food produced for domestic consumption. We had an unsubsidised but highly ef-

ficient agricultural sector which is markedly exposed to competition from moderately to highly subsidised producers in other nations. “Successive governments have worked hard to remove barriers to trade. It would be counterproductive for future governments to impose costs on our producers that would undermine those trade gains. “The wrong policies could reduce our emissions-efficient food production, a gap that will be filled by much less emissionsefficient producers overseas. We lose economically, and so does the planet in terms of global warming and climate change.” The Federation’s submission said regardless of which 2050

target is adopted, agricultural biological emissions should not come under the ETS until costeffective mitigations are available to farmers and our international competitors make similar moves. It also noted the great potential for forest and other woody vegetation to sequest carbon, including establishment of new commercial forests, farm woodlots, shelter belts, slope stability, erosion control planting and riparian planting. “But there’s a warning with this,” Hoggard said. “We’re very concerned about the potential for climate change policy to drive large-scale land use change from sheep and beef farming to forestry, when it’s farming that underpins the social, economic and

employment viability of rural communities.” The notion that foresters will want to plant on marginal land “is highly questionable. “Resource management, health and safety and economic factors are shifting new commercial forestry planting to land that is easy to maintain, and close to transport and processing infrastructure – the sort of land currently farmed. “When plantation forestry is harvested on steep, highly erodible land, land users and communities downstream are highly vulnerable to catastrophically destructive and costly debris flow damage – just think of recent events at Motueka and Tologa Bay.”

Bouncy fun for the holidays The Tinwald Memorial hall has transformed into a bouncy castle wonderland, thanks to the folk at Pop Up Playground. Tradie wins $22,000 payout By Aimee ShAw An Auckland tradie who lost his job following a complaint over his alleged flirting with a customer has been awarded more than $22,000 in compensation. The Employment Relations Authority found assistant roofing technician Samuel Newman, who was also a health and safety supervisor, to have been unjustly dismissed by his employer and suffered unjust disadvantages. The authority ordered Solid Roofing to pay Newman $22,875 in compensation for humiliation, loss of dignity and injury to feelings and lost wages. Newman, 22, was dismissed in January after a written warning following a customer complaint in respect of damage to a property and “unprofessional behaviour”. Following the written warning Newman had a heated discussion with Solid Roofing director Peter Vandenberg. Newman told the authority the phone call ended with Vandenberg hanging up and telling him he was stood down until further notice. Newman claimed his dismissal was unjustified, which Vandenberg denied. He said there had been numerous complaints about

Newman and his work performance. Vandenberg said Newman was warned about his performance prior to the written warning, which came following a serious customer complaint. He said Newman was given a verbal warning for failing to provide a safety analysis on a job. Newman was called into a meeting with Vandenberg in January who discussed a job he had been working on in the Auckland suburb of Cockle Bay with supervisor Jamie Cameron. Vandenberg told Newman the customer was not happy with the end result and

asked about the customer’s actions towards him. The authority heard there was a lot of joking at Solid Roofing’s Christmas party about Newman’s interactions with this customer. Newman said the customer had been flirtatious with him, offered him ham and cheese croissants, a drink and asked him to come inside her house. Other than accepting a glass of water, Newman said he refused her requests. Vandenberg said he received a call from the customer’s husband about the quality of the work and was told about alleged sexual in-

Forum seeks advice on sugar labelling An open consultation on sugar labelling hopes to increase consumers’ knowledge on the amount of sugar in their food. The consultation, which runs alongside the Australia and New Zealand Ministerial Forum on Food Regulation, will be open until September and seeks advice from consumers on what would improve sugar labels on packaged food and drinks. The Food Regulation Standing Committee (FRSC) is inviting stakeholders, including industry, public health and consumer organisations and other interested parties, to make submissions. The desired outcome is that food labels will provide adequate information about sugars to enable consumers to make informed choices in support of the dietary guidelines. Food Safety Minister Damien O’Connor said the consultation stems from the fact that people want to know how much sugar is in their food and how they can consume less. “This is significant progress in an area that matters to New Zealanders,” O’Connor said. “We want food labels to provide clear, contextual information about sugars to allow consumers to make informed choices in support of the dietary guidelines.” The consultation will also look at options for education on how to read and interpret labels, pictures such as teaspoons to convey the amount of sugar and advisory labels for foods high in added sugars. “Effective labelling contributes to the Government’s objective to improve the health and wellbeing of New Zealanders through healthy eating,” O’Connor said. NZ and Australia share a joint system for food labelling which is overseen by the

Australia and New Zealand Ministerial Forum on Food Regulation. “New Zealand benefits from the joint food regulatory system with Australia. We export around $3.6 billion of food to Australia and import around $1.8 billion. It makes sense to have the same rules for food labelling across both countries,” O’Connor said. At the November 2017 meeting, the forum agreed that information about sugars provided on food labels does not provide adequate contextual information to enable consumers to make informed choices in support of dietary guidelines and agreed to further examine regulatory and non-regulatory options to address this issue. Consumer research in relation to understanding of sugars and food labelling suggests that consumers are confused about how much sugar they should be consuming; they may not be able to determine whether a single product is high or low in sugars; and they can be confused about what are added sugars and what types of sugar should be limited in the diet for good health. There is also limited other information available to consumers in Australia and New Zealand about the added sugar content of foods – beyond food labels. The latest data available indicates that on average, over half of Australians and New Zealanders exceeded the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) recommendations in relation to the consumption of added sugars in 2011-12 and 2008-09. Adolescents in particular were the highest consumers of added sugars in both countries. – NZME

Fitzgibbon said Vandenberg’s actions had a significant impact on Newman, who had “suffered physically, mentally and went from being a confident person to being apprehensive”.

Mr Vandenberg failed to treat Mr Newman in good faith and failed to provide him with wages and time records when requested,” Fitzgibbon said. He also failed to respect the authority’s investigation process, she said. “Solid Roofing had ample opportunity to comply with its statutory obligation, it deliberately chose not to.” Vandenberg told the Herald he would lodge an appeal against the decision. “We’ve got very good grounds to lodge an appeal,” he said. “I was absolutely gobsmacked, gobsmacked that this can happen in this country. He said the Employment Relations Authority was biased. “The unfortunate thing is every employer out there is in the same boat. It is so biased in favour of the employee ... suggestion would leave a conspicuous hole in the Government’s finances. But the councils do have a case for recompense for what the Americans call “unfunded mandates”, where policies adopted by central government, often with little consultation, impose administrative and other costs on councils, like it or not. One possible way of offsetting that would be to abolish the rates exemption on Crown land, which the Local Government Business Forum reckons is worth around $220 million a year, or 4 per cent of the rates take. More generally, though, it argues that transfers from central government should be contestable and linked to specific projects, like the Tourism Infrastructure Fund, which “seems to be working well on a small scale”. It approves of replacing Auckland’s $114 annual transport levy with a regional fuel tax, despite its drawbacks — notably the leakage when trucks and other users fill up outside the super city’s boundary. But it sees it as only an OK alternative until the technology for proper road user charging and congestion charging is available. Also in the “might work” basket are infrastructure bonds to finance specific projects, where both the debt and the funding earmarked to service it are quarantined from the rest of a council’s finances. The Productivity Commission expects to start work on this inquiry in September. It promises plenty of public consultation. Its recommendations, says Finance Minister Grant Robertson, will not be ignored.

Networks Association and that champion of localism, the New Zealand Initiative. A paper the group released in April outlines several new sources of funding it either recommends or thinks might work and are worth looking into. Like Local Government NZ, it sees some scope to increase user charges. The normal argument for user pays is that it allows consumers to decide what they want to buy and gives information to suppliers about what is wanted and what is not. The downside is that it can be regressive and at least some of the things councils do are things the community is willing to subsidise or which benefit everyone. For some councils, the forum sees scope to increase debt, so long as it is incurred to provide long-lived assets. Only Auckland City and the Wellington Regional Council have a debt-to-assets ratio of more than 20 per cent. Ultimately, though, servicing and repaying that debt is a charge on whatever funding sources the council has. In that context a value capture tax is worth a look. It would recover some of the infrastructure costs councils incur from properties whose value rises as a direct result of that investment. “Arguments against it include the difficulty in identifying properties that would benefit, the inability to make a certain link between the capital gain and the council action and difficulty in quantifying the value,” the forum says. Auckland Mayor Phil Goff has floated the idea of central government remitting to the councils the GST it collects on rates – a tax on a tax. Given that in the 2017 financial year councils’ rates income was $5.5 billion, Goff’s

he rickety and antiquated finances of local government are to be properly reviewed and, with any luck, overhauled. The Productivity Commission inquiry the Government has initiated, which was part of the coalition agreement, will look into what is driving councils’ increasing costs and spending, and into options for new funding and financing tools. Any reforms flowing from it cannot come soon enough for hard-pressed ratepayers. This week’s inflation data show that, yet again, rates have grown faster than the cost of living: 3.1 per cent nationwide over the past year, while the consumers’ price index rose 1.5 per cent. Over the past 10 years, the “property rates and related services” component of the CPI (the “related services” are mostly water and rubbish collection charges) have risen 57 per cent, outstripping growth in both the CPI (17.3 per cent) and the population (14.4 per cent). Indeed, officials’ briefing to the incoming Minister of Local Government, Nanaia Mahuta, pointed out that the compound growth in rates over the past 10 years, per capita, has also outstripped growth in per capita GDP, average weekly earnings and an index of local government costs. Despite that brisk growth in rates, which provide 59 per cent of their operating income on average nationwide, councils are struggling to cover their costs. Auckland is notoriously failing to cope with rapid population growth. On the other hand, Local Government New Zealand estimates that 32 territorial local authorities will see their populations shrink by 2031, often combined with an ageing profile for those who remain. The Auditor-General has raised a red flag over the fact that the depreciation of infrastructure assets the councils claim is half as large again as the amount they spend renewing them — never mind dealing with population growth or the mounting risks from climate change. The Shand Inquiry 10 years ago recommended that reliance on rates be reduced to 50 per cent of councils’ operating funding. It hasn’t happened, but it remains good advice. Property values are a pretty rough proxy for ability to pay. Nor do they align well with the benefits households receive from local government. As a base for a wealth tax, property value leaves a lot to be desired. It ignores other asset classes and offsetting mortgage debt. And crucially, it is hard on people who are asset-rich but income-poor, including many pensioners and farmers. So what are the alternatives? One group the Productivity Commission will no doubt hear from is the Local Government Business Forum, whose members include Business New Zealand, Federated Farmers, the Chambers of Commerce, the Electricity

So I took a deep breath and yelled “I hate you Jews!” I shouted, “Kill them all!” My eyes covered with tears. Then I ran. I ran all the way home. I ran inside and hid under my bed. I cried. My head hurt. “Asher! What were you thinking?” yelled

Never run away like that!” he explained. “I’m sorry,” I sob. “Ok we need to go back,” says Dad. “Before they realise we’re not there.” Back at the town square a line of Jews is heading for the train station. “Where are they going?” I ask the man next to me. “Nobody knows,” says the man. “But they don’t come back. My family have been gone for weeks now.” I watched as the train started to move away. My eyes filled with tears. I knew my mother was on that train. I wonder will I be next?

Dreams for the 21st century Kate Sheppard making it possible for women being able to vote that’s something to think about? To me that just seems a part of life nowadays. I just wonder how do you make a difference? You never know maybe this story will make a difference in the world? At night time I look out the window and say I am going to make the world a better place to be in. “You may see me struggle but you will never see me quit” That would have to be my favourite quotes. Things will come and go. There will be a surprise around every corner. I learned this a few years ago my dog she died. I think of her every single day. I still cry myself to sleep sometimes. I know how hard it is to let something that’s been with you your whole life. She is still in my life and she is kind of an imaginary friend. Now that makes me think… I wonder I know how I am going

to make difference? I just want make children lives who live without a home, as amazing as possible. I don’t think it is fair that there are children in our world who live without, for their whole live childhood. Put yourself in their shoes. How would you feel if you had no warmth? No food? No nothing? I believe I can make a difference. Just because I’m 10 doesn’t mean I can’t make a difference. Together we can make the world a better place to be. Think about it, we could donate more money to the homeless shelter. Visit schools and teach other kids like me that there are kids that don’t live like us. But at the end we are all the same and we could also speak to the children and tell them they are not alone. I think that would make their day if a child like me lets them know everything will be ok. But remember I can’t do this on my own. New Zealand please some kids need your help! Thank you if I win the writing competition I will give my prize for homeless children’s warmth and health and help get a roof over their heads.

The Teddy Bear Just when I’m about to fall asleep, I hear my door screech. So many thoughts run through my head. Who could it be? What would anybody want now – and why? My door bursts open and I hear, “come out wherever you are!” I yell for mum, but no words come out. I hold my breath, close my eyes and stay still for as long as possible. Waiting. I feel it getting closer to my bed. It yanks the blankets off me. I open my eyes and I see my new teddy bear that mum bought me yesterday. I wonder if it was the teddy bear. Surely, it can’t be.

and Dad. But when they get here the teddy bear is lying on the ground. I try to tell them everything but they say I just had a bad dream. I lie awake thinking. I must think of a plan. Finally I think of it. The next night I wait under my bed for the teddy bear to come out. Pillows are in my bed to look like me. Finally the bear comes out. It walks to the bed, I jump out from under my bed and dive on it with a box. “Yes!” I chant. I run to the other side of the room and grab some duct tape. I wrap the tape around the box as much as I can and leave it in the hallway. I go back to bed and I fall asleep, smiling.

The next night, I go to bed feeling kind of scared. Just as I’m about to go to sleep, I hear my door screech. Oh no, I think to myself, not this again.

In the morning, I bike to the local second hand shop. I hand the box over the counter and say “sell this.” Then I leave.

The footsteps come closer to my bed. I freeze. The bed sheets are yanked off me. I force open my eyes. It’s the teddy, standing over me. I scream for Mum

The next day a girl comes to the shop and says “Mummy can I have this? Pleeeeeeease can I have this box with a bear inside?” “Ok darling,” says the mum.

A big week ahead at council table W

ith a view to the future, next week will be a big week around the Ashburton District Council. Monday’s gathering to ponder submissions made on the Ashburton CBD will pave the way for future generations of business owners in the hub of our main centre and from the very youth of our district who spoke a few weeks ago, to some of our longest standing retailers – it’s time for action, and there should be no mucking around. Submissions have been pretty strongly in favour of seeing work

done on returning some vibrancy and life to the Ashburton CBD as well as making some changes to the overall look and feel of the area. Business Mid Canterbury have made sure their voice is well heard in the process and have

been one of the real drivers for something to happen. But while the CBD is important and certainly a hot topic for a lot of people, it will be usurped in the popularity stakes when it comes time for council to sit down and vote on how our numbers will stack up in terms of representation in the future. Will it be the status quo of 12, or are we set to reduce to 9? Basic facts would suggest that for a good majority of our population, it won’t make any difference at all. The district will still operate,

decisions will still be made, rates will rise and fall and things will still get done – but the number of people deciding on the best course of action could alter. I’ve got no preference on the matter. There’s benefits on both sides of the argument and it’s quite clear to see why some councillors are more vocal for the proposed change, just as it is quite simple to see how some are vehemently against reducing the numbers. As people in our district, we probably should care a little bit more than what most of us do.

Thirty-four submissions were made on the representation and 22 came back in favour of the change, in a world where the majority rules that would suggest that by the end of the week we may be looking at a councillor list of nine in the future. But history would suggest that just because it would seem the majority are in favour, there’s no certainty that it will correlate to that being the outcome. It will be a hotly contested issue, that is certain and there will be plenty of interest in the outcome.

ven now, though well within our established expectations, the performance of the Leader of the Free World during his recent shambolic progress through some of that, same, Free World, was excrutiating, to put it mildly. Ignorance, rudeness, insult and disloyalty – characteristics with which we have become familiar since Trump took office at the beginning of last year – were all present, to amaze, shock and bring despair to the vast majority of those of us who look to the United States for genuine leadership. His final comment to Putin to the effect he prefers to trust the Russians – the KGB? – rather than his own CIA, brought his travels to a “triumphant” conclusion. That, at almost the same moment, France was prevailing in the World Football Cup final, Serena Williams was losing at Wimbledon and Djokovic winning it, helped to distract some of the appalled citizens of the Western World from Trump’s mind-blowing utterances. To those distractions can be added also the apparent imminent self-immolation of the European Union (EU). American politicians of all hues and persuasions were quick to turn to Twitter, Facebook, and the like, to express their outrage that their own president had so publicly shamed them. But once the inevitable cliches – “at the end of the day”; “when the dust settles” etc – have “done their dash”, will Trump’s pathetic comments make any difference? The American people seem to have adjusted to having in the White House a man who must be on the verge of being certifiably deranged. He has, since, if reluctantly, accepted that Russia did “meddle” in the 2016 election, but Trump seems somehow to see that as normal, and thus no cause for alarm. Therefore, we can expect the charade/French farce at the White House to continue una-

Back here, we can but watch and wonder. The tariff war instigated by the same Goliath in Pennsylvania Avenue, is upon us, or at least in the offing. However, news today of the potential abolition of such taxes as applied on certain Chinese goods and reductions elsewhere. I even think I heard the sum of $600 million mentioned, in which case the gang Trump is being outmanoeuvred in its own back yard. While all these titanic events are unfolding in the great wide world beyond the seas, we are facing the mega challenge of whether or not the Health Minister should have put his family before the nurses. In the 33 hours leading up to the moment the nurses withdrew their labour last Thursday, the minister directly affected was busy accompanying his family to an unnamed holiday destination. David Clark justified his absence from the barricades on the grounds of family first. This led to a furious, on-screen, “exchange of views”, between media heavyweights, Tova O’Brien – for nurses – and Duncan Garner, for family. I’m with Tova on this; if you are a leader you must be seen by the troops when they are up against it. I’d have to say, though, that by comparison with the seismic

upheavals still rolling in Trump’s wake, the Tova-Duncan spat is quite small beer. As deadline approaches, coming in on the overhead wires, the suggestion we simply do not have enough political parties to make MMP viable. I shall be able to give this provocative idea serious, overnight consideration . . . Night now come and gone. I have to say that stuffing the Beehive with representatives of one-idea parties – the renters, the drug takers; even the pet party – for example, appeals not at all to me. If there are not enough spontaneous interest groups to make MMP a more effective system of government then that means people have voted with their feet and decided we have, now, as many parties as we need. We are left, therefore, with the impossible job of making a silk purse out of a sow’s ear, always a tall order. As far as is known, all goes well within the first family. Mother, daughter and good bloke all beavering away in their chosen roles. We are told there may be a National response to this idyllic, vote-gathering scenario in the early weeks of 2019, with the arrival of another mini, but National, person in the household of Mr and Mrs Bridges. Of course, there would be a major difference in the circumstances as it seems unlikely

mother and father Bridges would be likely to change their public personas and mum become the leader of the Opposition. However, the ultra wise ladies and gentlemen on the board of the National Party are said to believe the scheme has great popularity potential. In fact, these may be the lengths to which future party leaders may have to go to ensure election to high office. Quite a daunting prospect, really and, in some cases, physically impossible. Finally, late news has informed us that on his return from the bad hair of Helsinki, the Leader of the Free World, suffered a grammatical “event” (aka “meltdown”) when he was overcome by a passing cloud of angry negatives which, in turn, caused him to mis-speak. I feel sure you will join with me in wishing the Titan of our Times a full and speedy recovery. From personal experience I can identify with the discomfort the president is now experiencing. Angry negatives can be nasty little buggers. The life of All Black legend Jonah Lomu is set to be told in the two-part mini-series Jonah, The Untold Story. The legendary All Black died on November 18, 2015 of a heart attack following a long battle with kidney failure. Not only did he leave behind a wife, Nadene, and two sons, but a legion of fans around the world. Jonah, The Untold Story will explore the phenomenal tale of the boy from Tonga who took New Zealand and the rugby world by storm. Jonah’s wife Nadene said it’s been a “heart-breaking and emotional journey” making the show. “I appreciate the efforts of all involved in bringing Jonah’s story to live,” she said.

Trump invites Putin to US Unbowed by swirling criticism of his summit encounter with Vladimir Putin, President Donald Trump swiftly invited the Russian leader to the White House later this year for a second get-together. Cleanup from the first continued with no letup yesterday, as Trump belatedly decided Putin’s “incredible offer” of shared US-Russia investigations was no good after all. A White House meeting would be a dramatic extension of legitimacy to the Russian leader, who has long been isolated by the West for activities in Ukraine, Syria and beyond and is believed to have interfered in the 2016 presidential election that sent Trump to the presidency. No Russian leader has visited the White House in nearly

a decade. Trump asked National Security Adviser John Bolton to invite Putin, and “those discussions are already underway,” Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said yesterday. Trump earlier had tweeted that he looked forward to “our second meeting” as he defended his performance at the summit, in which the two leaders conferred on a range of issues including terrorism, Israeli security, nuclear proliferation and North Korea. “There are many answers, some easy and some hard, to these problems ... but they can ALL be solved!” Trump tweeted. There was no immediate reaction from the Kremlin to the invitation. News of the invite appeared to catch even the president’s

top intelligence official by surprise. “Say that again,” National Intelligence Director Dan Coats responded, when informed of the invitation during an appearance at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado. “OK,” he continued, pausing for a deep breath. “That’s going to be special.” Then the White House announced Trump “disagrees” with Putin’s offer to allow US questioning of 12 Russians who have been indicted for election interference in exchange for Russian interviews with the former US ambassador to Russia and other Americans the Kremlin accuses of unspecified crimes. Trump initially had described the idea as an “incredible offer”. The White House backtrack

came just before the Senate voted overwhelmingly against the proposal. It was Congress’ first formal rebuke of Trump’s actions from the summit and its aftermath. Asked about the Putin invitation, Alaska Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan said “I wouldn’t do it, that’s for damn sure”. “If the Russians want a better relationship, trips to the White House aren’t going to help,” he added. “They should stop invading their neighbours. They should stop meddling in our elections.” Mixed messages from Trump have increased worries in Congress that the White House is not taking seriously the threat that senior officials say Russia now poses to the upcoming 2018 midterm elections. - AP

Auckland, Australia? Kendrick Lamar committed the ultimate sin during his first Auckland show on Thursday night, calling the city Auckland, Australia. The acclaimed hip-hop star made the faux pas during the second of his New Zealand concerts. Fans were quick to take to social media to point out the hip-hop star’s error. “Kendrick Lamar was doing so well until he said ‘Auckland, Australia’,” Dan Newman said on Twitter. According to one concert-goer, he corrected himself 10 minutes later saying “Auckland, New Zealand”.

Virgin Mary statue ‘weeping’ olive oil Inside a Catholic church in New Mexico, a seven-foot-tall bronze statue of the Virgin Mary appears to be “weeping,” according to church leaders. The sculpture, known locally as Our Lady of Guadalupe, is not crying human tears; an investigator with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Las Cruces said her “tears” have the same chemical makeup as olive oil treated with perfume – a substance that, when blessed, would be chrism, a sacred oil used in the Catholic Church to anoint parishioners. But, church leaders say, the rare occurrence has prompted people from all over to come for conversions, confessions and to watch the statue of the

Calls for help to battle fires

Temporary millionaire For a few minutes, a Boston woman says she was a millionaire. Ellen Fleming says she received a voicemail from a TD Ameritrade financial consultant on Wednesday afternoon that a deposit had been made into her account. The 26-year-old opened the company’s app on her cellphone and was surprised to find $1.1 million instead of the $50 that she had left a few months ago. Fleming tells The Boston Globe that she immediately thought about quitting her job and paying her student loans. Instead, she called the consultant back and informed them of the mix-up. Fleming says the money was meant for a woman with the same name who lives in Florida. She jokes that in her obituary she would like to be referred to as a “one-time millionaire.” - AP

EU ruling against Google opens ‘opportunity,’ rival says European regulators’ latest swipe at the dominance of US tech giant Google could open new opportunities for rivals in search and web browsers – that is, if cellphone manufacturers decide to make the most of the opening. The European Commission this week fined Google a record $5 billion for forcing cellphone makers that use the company’s Android operating system to install Google’s search and browser apps. It also set a 90-day deadline for Google to rectify the problem or risk further fines. A remedy could involve unbundling its core apps Search, Chrome and Play Store from eight other apps it packages with Android. The company could also decide to reverse its practice of barring Android manufacturers from selling devices using altered versions of Android, such as Amazon’s Fire OS. EU Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said concerns about restricting competition “wasn’t just a remote possibility from theory books”. She said Amazon tried to licence its Android-based Fire OS in 2012, but Google’s contracts prevented it. “Manufacturers could not launch Fire OS on even a single

Sweden has called for help in fighting forest fires raging across the country and as far north as the Arctic Circle as record temperatures hit Norway, Finland and Sweden. Italy and Norway have both sent firefighting aircraft to help battle wildfires that have raged in some places for days. The national weather service has issued fire warnings for almost the entire country. An intense heat dome has swelled over Scandinavia, spurring some of the region’s hottest weather ever recorded. More than 80 wildfires are reportedly burning in Sweden, mostly in the central and western parts of the country, but also in the Arctic north. Thousands of people have been warned to remain inside with the windows shut to avoid breathing smoky air. Normally, temperatures in Scandinavia during July reach up to 20°C. Scandal rocks Peru The head of Peru’s judicial branch resigned yesterday in the wake of a mounting corruption scandal involving secret phone recordings capturing numerous judges making behind-the-scenes deals on everything from promotions to criminal sentences. The latest scandal to embroil this South American nation has ensnared some of the country’s highest-ranking judges and political officials and comes just four months after then-President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski stepped down in a separate corruption probe. In a short letter shared on Twitter, judicial chief Duberli Rodriguez announced he was tendering his resignation “due to the institutional crisis”. The accounts of judicial misconduct became public two weeks ago when the Peruvian investigative news website IDLReporteros and the Panorama news analysis television show published a series of telephone recordings involving an extensive network of judges, businessmen and local authorities describing back-room deals. In one recording, judge Cesar Hinostroza is caught talking with a person about the suspect in the rape of an 11-year-old girl. After asking the child’s age, Hinostroza promises to pull up the case file and investigate. Then he asks: “What do you all want? For the sentence to be reduced or be declared innocent?” - AP

Police arrested celebrity plastic surgeon Denis Cesar Barros Furtado yesterday, five days after he went on the run following the death of a patient he gave injections to enlarge her buttocks. Known as “Dr. Bumbum” — Brazilian slang for backside, Furtado was arrested at an office complex in Rio de Janeiro’s Barra de Tijuca neighbourhood. Police also arrested his mother, Maria de Fatima Barros, who worked with him. - AP

Isis suspect wanted Australia will not give up its quest to prosecute an Australian Islamic State group suspect despite a Turkish court rejecting an extradition application, the Australian prime minister said yesterday. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said he was disappointed that the Criminal Court in the southern city of Kilis rejected Australia’s request to extradite Australian citizen Neil Prakash. “We’ll be working closely with the Turkish authorities to see how we can ensure that he is brought back to face justice in Australian courts,” Turnbull told reporters. - AP

Boat capsizes Yemeni security officials and tribal leaders say a boat carrying more than 160 African migrants has capsized off the southern province of Shabwa. It is not immediately clear if there have been any fatalities or if any migrants have been rescued. The authorities and tribal leaders said the boat departed from the port of Bosaso in Somalia carrying 100 Somalis and 60 Ethiopians, including women and children. - AP

Abuse report delayed The head of the Chilean Roman Catholic Church’s abuse prevention committee says he will not deliver a report on sex abuse committed by priests against minors to Chile’s attorney general. The 2300-page report was ordered by Pope Francis after he visited the South American country. Bishop Juan Ignacio Gonzalez said the information in the report could harm those who testified in secret if it became known. He said that “the pope is the only recipient of this report.” Francis received the report earlier this year and then publicly denounced a “culture of abuse and cover-up” in Chile’s Catholic Church. - AP

Bellbird feeding Janine Barker was at the top of the Takaka Hill earlier this year during January. She spotted this bellbird feeding on southern rata flowers. Members of the Ashburton Photographic Society often have to be quite patient and quiet while waiting for the perfect photo, and Janine had to wait while the bellbird made its way towards a point where she could see it clearly. Tim McVie was only about 13 when he started playing squash. It is a sport that has given him so much and a sport that he loves – and now it is his job. McVie is Squash Midlands’ first squash development officer for the Ashburton region and his job is to encourage younger people to join local clubs. McVie is one of three development officers employed across the Midlands district thanks to funding. The other two positions are based in Timaru and Oamaru, and the funding for the Ashburton-based position came from the Community Trust of Mid and

South Canterbury. McVie is a professional squash coach who has been teaching young people the finer points of the sport for 10 years. Based at Rolleston, McVie was the squash coach at the Christchurch Squash Club and ran his own coaching business when the opportunity arose to spread his wings into Ashburton. He jumped at it. A squad of budding young Ashburton squash players has been formed and every Tuesday McVie helps them to become better players. He is keen to recruit more players. Over the past two weeks, McVie has hosted a squash holiday programme at the Collegiate Squash

Club, catering for complete beginners through to those who had played the game before and wanted to improve their skills. Holiday programmes were also held in Timaru and Oamaru, but Ashburton’s first session proved to be the most popular, with the biggest numbers. McVie said the holiday programmes, and the squash development officer role, were all about introducing kids to the sport and giving them a chance to give it a go. “For this junior development role it’s trying to work with the schools and get some kids along to the clubs,” McVie said. Ashburton has three squash

clubs – Ashburton, Collegiate and Celtic – while Methven and Rakaia also come under his umbrella. “I love it, it’s a fantastic game and it’s pretty cool being able to pass on the knowledge that I have learnt over the years and help other people who want to improve,” McVie said. When he first set out in the working world, becoming a squash coach was not what McVie intended. “I actually did a BCom in accounting, so worked at an accounting firm for about a year, but it wasn’t really for me,” McVie said. So, he turned his love for squash into a job. McVie started playing squash

when he was about 13 and living in Oamaru. “My parents both played at the Excelsior club so I just got into it through them, which I think is common for our sport,” McVie said. “I was an A grader – I was A2 – and I played for Canterbury a couple of times in the senior team. “I don’t know if I’d still call myself a squash player, I’ve had a few too many injuries over the past few years, but I’m trying to get back into it.” But his main aim is ensuring the future of the sport he loves was secure, by showing youngsters how to play and hopefully keeping on the court.

Rowdy fans tarnish win for Thomas atop Alpe d’Huez One of cycling’s big attractions is that fans don’t have to pay to watch – and they can get as close as they want to the riders. The sport paid for that unlimited access this week when unruly spectators interrupted the most iconic climb of the Tour de France. With fans pressing too close to an elite group of riders at the conclusion of the 21 hairpin bends up to Alpe d’Huez, top contender Vincenzo Nibali crashed into a police motorbike and later withdrew from the race, four-time champion Chris Froome received some undesired contact on his back, and yellow jersey holder Geraint Thomas was booed on the podium. “If people don’t like Sky and want to boo, that’s fine. Boo all you like, but don’t affect the race,” Thomas said. “Don’t touch the riders. Don’t spit at us. Voice your opinions all you want but let us do the racing.” Attitudes toward Sky soured when Froome was involved in an asthma drug case stemming from last year’s Spanish Vuelta — even though he was cleared of wrongdoing just days before the Tour started. There were two police motorbikes. When Froome accelerated, I followed him, I was feeling good. Then we slowed down and I hit the ground.” Nibali was diagnosed with a fractured vertebra and the Bahrain-Merida rider later tweeted that he was withdrawing from the Tour. Tom Dumoulin crossed second, two seconds behind Thomas, and Romain Bardet came third, three seconds back. Froome, who finished fourth, four seconds behind, refused to talk to reporters afterward. A fan who allegedly hit him during the stage was put in handcuffs by French police. “You expect professional athletes to play sport and entertain

without being touched or impacted on by the crowd,” Sky general manager Dave Brailsford said. “Part of the joy of our sport is how close the crowd gets. But we have to bear in mind that if it impacts on the race, as it did with Nibali today, then that’s too much.” Thomas extended his lead over Froome in the overall standings to 1 minute, 39 seconds. He’ll likely hold on to the yellow jersey for at least several more days as the Tour returns to flatter roads for Stages 13 and 14 before the climbs resume in the Massif Central and the Pyrenees. “In my eyes Froomey is still our leader,” Thomas said. “I’m just going to enjoy it now.” The last and most feared of the three stages in the Alps this year, the 175.5km leg began in BourgSaint-Maurice and took the peloton over three gruelling, beyondcategory climbs. Pay cut needed for Isaac Luke to stay Off-contract Warriors hooker Issac Luke wants to stay and the club want to keep him but salary cap restrictions could still prevent him from re-signing for next season. The 31-year-old has been one of the Warriors’ finest this season having rediscovered his best form to help propel the Auckland outfit towards their first finals appearance since 2011. The Kiwi international was dynamic in last week’s win over Brisbane and will be primed for another big performance in tomorrow’s clash against Melbourne at Mt Smart Stadium. The Warriors are looking to cement their place in the top eight and put themselves in contention for a spot in the top four, while Luke’s personal match-up with Storm captain Cameron Smith will be worth the price of admission alone. The former South Sydney premiership winner has declared he wants to remain in Auckland in 2019, but he may have to settle for a heavily reduced contract with the Warriors having little left to spend under the salary cap. “I have spoken to Mooks (coach Stephen Kearney) about it. I want to stay,” Luke told NRL.com. “Obviously it is about what is best for the club and they have a lot of depth in my area at the moment. “At the moment I am just trying to help those boys grow. I have to let my footy do the talking. I want a contract.” The Warriors have plenty options at hooker in Nathaniel Roache and rookies Sam Cook and Karl Lawton, but the club would love to keep Luke on their books for one more year.

Roache is held in high regard but has been sidelined all year with a back injury, continuing a horror run that has left him stalled on 20 games and short of the amount of experience the club anticipated he would have. The 22-year-old is set to return next season and the Warriors would be thrilled if he could finish his apprenticeship alongside Luke before filling the No. 9 jersey in 2020. Unfortunately for Luke, confirmation this week that former captain Simon Mannering will retire at the end of the season does not improve the club’s position under the salary cap. Mannering was weighing up whether to re-sign for a 15th season, but it’s understood he was prepared to take an extreme pay cut and play for a minimal amount. The Warriors were never stockpiling a large sum to retain the 31-year-old backrower and his decision to hang the boots up does not leave them with extra cash to splash out on retaining Luke. Talks between the club and Luke’s agent are continuing but the situation remains uncertain. If a rival club decided they needed a new hooker and made Luke an attractive offer it is unlikely the Warriors would be able to match it. “If what it takes to get Issac to stay next season is within our reach we will do everything we can to keep him,” explained Warriors general manager of football Brian Smith. “He’s keen to stay and we just need to make sure that we can afford him and we’ve got to comply with the salary cap so it’s going to be a bit of a juggling act.” - NZME

If Southern beats Rakaia today, they’ll be assured of a spot in Mid Canterbury Rugby’s big show and get the chance to defend the Watters Cup. That’s just one of the possible scenarios that could play out today when the final whistle blows on the round robin games of the sport’s local showpiece competition. Southern topped the points table heading into today’s games and going into the match against the team they beat in the 2018 final they are the favourites. They are unbeaten so far in the Watters Cup, while Rakaia has a loss and two narrow wins to their name. Neither side will be taking the other lightly though. The same game at the same time last year was arguably the game of the season, and Rakaia won it, but two weeks later the same two teams met in the final and it was Southern who came out on top. Ask any coach of Mid Canterbury’s senior rugby sides and they’ll all tell you, it is a different game when it is local teams playing local teams. Rakaia were the only team to make the finals of the Combined Country Cup, but they’ve struggled to find their feet since losing the combined competition’s final to Waihora. “We need to get back on the horse and start doing what we were doing in that other competition,” Foxcroft said. That is easier said than done when it is friend-versus-friend, but Rakaia will be extra determined to win today given it is captain Jackson Donlan’s 100th division one game for Rakaia. “It always does change for some reason, when you start playing local teams they all seem to know each other and they niggle,” Foxcroft said. But on the other side, Southern, if anything, has stepped it up since the combined competition. They just missed out on making the combined finals, but have gone on to become the form team of the Watters Cup where their

But Methven won”t make life easy for them, knowing that they are an outside win of also making the top three. If Southern beat Rakaia and doesn’t let them get a bonus point, and Methven wins with a

bonus point, Methven will leapfrog Rakaia into third. So Methven are determined. “We will be treating it like a final,” Methven coach Andy Pearce said. Celtic coach Geoff Wright said his side was wary of Methven, because they had tipped his side up in a similar situation before. Another potential scenario this weekend is that if Celtic wins, and Southern loses, Celtic could finish on top of the table and go straight to the final. All Celtic can do though, is focus on their own game.

“It’s not in our control. What we can control is the game against Methven and that’s what we will be focusing on. We just have to make sure we have our mind on the job,” Wright said. Whoever finishes top of the table by the end of today will go straight to the final and get next weekend off, while the second and third placed teams play off for that second spot in the final. Rakaia will host Southern at the Rakaia Domain today at 2.45pm, while Methven will host Celtic at the Methven Domain with kickoff also at 2.45pm.

NZ sevens sides aim to create history at RWC The goal for New Zealand heading into the Rugby World Cup Sevens is clear: defend the titles they won in Moscow four years ago. Both the All Blacks and Black Ferns sevens sides arrived in San Francisco as defending World Cup champions, Commonwealth Games gold medallists, and with an eye on creating history – no one has managed to defend their titles in the history of the tournament. Speaking ahead of their first game, All Blacks co-captain Tim Mikkelson – who was named player of the tournament at the 2013 World Cup – said defending

their title was very much on their minds. “Going back-to-back is something we’ve talked about. We want this team to create its own history and legacy,” said Mikkelson. ”There are so many teams that could win and it will be the team that can execute under pressure; you have to play every game like it’s a final in this knock-out format, so we need to step up and do the business. “We’ve been preparing really well. We have a great group of guys in our team who have worked extremely hard and hopefully if we play well across four games, we’ll

get the title again.” Having won alongside the Black Ferns in 2013 and again at the Commonwealth Games earlier this year, Mikkelson said both teams were motivated to do it again. “Our teams train in the same facilities so we know how hard each other work every day, so to get a result alongside the women is awesome. Hopefully we can do it again.” Black Ferns captain Sarah Goss echoed Mikkelson’s sentiment: “Sharing success with the men is amazing. “We train day in, day out for the same thing, so I hope we can do it

again this weekend.” For the Black Ferns, the World Cup comes during a moment where the appetite for women’s rugby seems to be at an all-time high and all eyes will be on them again as they hope to build on their recent run of form. The Black Ferns sevens team were one of the highlights of the Commonwealth Games after their incredible final match against Australia to win the gold medal, a victory which was sealed by a special extra-time try from Kelly Brazier. They are also coming into the World Cup on the back of a string

of dominant victories, having won the last three World Series tournaments. Goss expressed fond memories about their successes at the Gold Coast and Moscow, but said the challenge of going back-to-back will be unique. “Moscow was a special moment, we were an inexperienced team and it was incredible to take a Rugby World Cup home to New Zealand. Taylah takes gold national champs Ashburton 14-year-old Taylah Burrowes has claimed her first gold medal at the national karate championships. The win in the 14/15 year old kumite division topped off a big few months for Burrowes, who also won gold at the New Zealand Open in March, and finished fourth at the Oceania championships, narrowly missing out on bronze. While the win earlier this year at the New Zealand Open (which is open to people from other countries too) was Burrowes’ second win at that competition, last weekend’s win was her first New Zealand national title at the national championships. She had to defeat three others on her way to winning gold. “One of them was quite close, but the other two weren’t too bad,” Burrowes said. She said she wasn’t sure how she’d fare going into the competition, having only arrived home from a holiday in Fiji a couple of

Kerber eyes Aussie Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber will be back to defend her Sydney International title as she eyes off another Australian Open crown. Goalkeeper costly Brazil goalkeeper Alisson became the world’s most expensive goalkeeper on Thursday when he joined Liverpool from Roma. Roma said the deal for Brazil’s starting goalkeeper at the World Cup in Russia “could be worth up to $84.5 million. “In terms of my life and my career, it’s a huge step for me being part of this club and this family,” the 25-year-old Alisson said. Bathurst on Lowndes’ mind Ipswich may be in Craig Lowndes’ sights but Bathurst is on his mind. The Supercars great admits he is looking forward to simply racing again at this weekend’s Ipswich SuperSprint after the “whirlwind” since announcing a fortnight ago he would retire from full-time driving at season’s end. Lowndes said he had no regrets about his shock call and would be “pushing hard” for an unprecedented 13th win at his final Ipswich event. But the 44-year-old reckoned his Supercars swansong wouldn’t be complete without conquering Mount Panorama one more time. Tahs’ Newsome back in favour He watched from the grandstand the last time the Waratahs won the Super Rugby title but promoted winger Alex Newsome now has the chance to help them get back to that pinnacle. Today’s quarterfinal against the Highlanders in Sydney will be the biggest game yet for 23-year-old Newsome, who hails from Glen Innes in the New England region of country NSW. He was part of the NSW under20s team the year the Tahs won their only Super Rugby title in 2014. Newsome broke into that competition with the Western Force

last year, appearing in most games of what turned out to be their final Super campaign. He made four starts for NSW earlier in the season, with his last run-on appearance coming in a mid-season 29-0 loss to the Lions. The Waratahs have played eight games since that loss, their biggest of the season. “I had a few things to work on in the middle of the season and now I’m back playing some good footy,” Newsome said. “Just getting back to what I know works for me, playing my game and getting my involve-

Kai Kara France is the latest Kiwi mixed martial artist to earn a contract with the UFC. Help for Tokyo 2020 Tokyo Games organisers must seek foreign expertise in sports where the country has little tradition or experience, says IOC vice-president John Coates. “Obviously in sports in which Japan is not traditionally strong, and doesn’t have a lot of experience in, then more liaison work with international federations is necessary,” Kyodo News quoted Coates as saying. “The federations are not going to have to worry too much about karate or judo or baseball or softball –track and field, great experience there, swimming too – but you go to rowing, canoeing, some of those sports, and it is going to need greater reliance on the international federations, in terms of operational planning.” The comments come after some federations – including sailing and baseball – raised concerns about Japan’s ability to deliver. - AAP

Dasoudi ranks as Miller’s previous best galloper, having split Group One winners Booming and Eileen Dubh when second in the 2011 Gr.1 Thorndon Mile (1600m) at Trentham and finished a luckless third to Keep The Peace and Wall Street in the Gr.1 Haunui Farm WFA Classic (1600m) at Otaki two starts later. “Early on, Dasoudi won two in a row and was then beaten a neck and then won her next start, but until Te Toro Pearl, I hadn’t had one that had won three in a row,”

Miller said. “I think she’s probably as good as Dasoudi too – and maybe a little bit better.” Raced by Keith and Craig Pennell, Te Toro Pearl placed in her first two trials before finishing sixth on debut at Te Aroha, her only defeat in four starts. “Her second trial at Cambridge, she sat 10 wide and only got beaten by a head, and I began to gallop her with Waipipi Lad as a mate and she was not only keeping up but beating him,” Miller said. “I said to the guys ‘if she lives up to her trials and trackwork, we’re going to have a bit of fun’. She has surprised me though, just how quickly she has come to it. I’d have been happy to get one win out of her in her first preparation.” Millar was delighted with the improvement Te Toro Pearl has

made through each of her runs and her courage in overcoming tough runs on heavy tracks to record wins at New Plymouth, Avondale and Tauranga leading into Saturday’s race. “She’s in great order going into this one too. She’s jumping out of her skin,” Miller said. “Four in a row will be hard but as long as she kicks on and does what she’s been doing, she should be competitive. She handles these heavy tracks.” Safely through Saturday’s race, Miller intends continuing to take Te Toro Pearl through the grades with a view to stepping her up to better company next preparation. Kiwi commentator bound for Hong Kong New Zealand race caller Tom Wood has been called up to the big leagues and will join Hong Kong’s broadcast team in the new season. Currently Singapore Turf Club’s number one race caller, Wood has spent the last 18 months in the South East Asian racing jurisdiction, taking over his current role from Australian race caller Matt Jones earlier this year. “I was the number two here for the first 13 or 14 months behind Matt Jones and when he decided to go back to Victoria and go farming I was in a fortunate spot to be put into the number one role here,” Wood said. “This year I have ticked off a few good races like the (Singapore) Derby last weekend and then before that the Kranji Mile meeting.

“But he gave me a whole stack of opportunities when I was number two to him.
