RSA’s theme this year: Not all wounds bleed By Katie todd

Red poppies were cropping up on clothes around town yesterday, as the Returned Services Association’s annual appeal hit the streets. Poppy sellers were out in force, including members of the Ashburton Cadet Unit, as they raised money to support returned service personnel and their families. The theme for this year’s poppy day was “not all wounds bleed”. The RSA is seeking to highlight the fact that mental health injuries are the most common, but least understood, of all wounds suffered by New Zealand servicemen and women. In the build up to Ashburton’s Anzac commemorations on Wednesday, the cadet unit will also be working to clean up memorial sites today. For those who were unable to purchase a poppy yesterday, donations to the RSA can be made online, through www.rsa.org.nz/ donate. $3 donations can also be made by texting POPPY to 4662. Farmers are being kept in the dark over the government’s plans to cull herds infected with mycoplasma bovis and the compensation they might receive, Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon says. Falloon, who met with one of the affected farmers earlier this week, said it was now more than three weeks since Minister of Agriculture Damien O’Connor and the Ministry for Primary Industries made the call to resume culling. “But for many farmers I’ve been working with, there’s been little information provided to them

about when culling will happen. “It’s incomprehensible that the Government would delay a decision to resume culling for so long, and then have no apparent plan on when and how culling would actually occur.” He said the decision to resume culling was the right one, but farmers with infected herds need certainty around the process. “Many have to make decisions very soon on feed and without the right information from the Government there’ll be costly mistakes. “There’s been no certainty yet from Government about what compensation farmers will re-

O’Connor was optimistic that given MPI had boosted its compensation team, earlier concerns about payment delays would be resolved. However, he said the compensation process was very complex and required a huge amount of information.

Staff at Rainer Irrigation in Ashburton were flying high yesterday after the company was awarded Irrigation New Zealand’s Innovation Award on Thursday night. Rainer won the award for its Vibra Screen, a cutting edge piece of equipment designed and built in Ashburton. The screen removes solids larger than 1mm, which allows solids and liquid to be separated in effluent, with the liquid able to be recycled in centre pivot irrigators to fertilise pasture. Rainer assistant manager Lucas Cawte said everybody at the company’s Ashburton base was talking about the win. “We’re really stoked. Everyone’s flying high and talking about it. It’s a real achievement.” He said full credit had to go to all the Rainer staff involved in the product, from its research and development through to its manufacture and launch more than three years later. “While we were surprised (to win), I think it’s deserved. We’ve got utmost faith in the product, which is reflected in the feedback from our clients. “All the staff have contributed in one shape or form, so hats off to the team.” He also wanted to thank Rainer’s customers who were involved in the screen’s development.

As Ashburton police follow up information about recent theft incidents, they are urging locals to take measures to protect their work tools and other belongings. Police said yesterday they had received a couple of reports of incidents and said tools left in cars appear to be a particular tar-

get of late – prompting the need for “particular vigilance” from tradesmen. Senior Sergeant Paul Dean said he advised removing tools from unattended vehicles and recording serial numbers where possible. He said police sometimes came across tools that are “probably stolen”, but have no way to prove that they have been taken with-

out the serial number having been recorded. Serial numbers are located on boxes and on tools themselves and can easily be recorded by the owners, he said. “And one good way people can record serial numbers is to take photos using their phone or device.” Also ensuring no tools are left in unattended vehicles could also

Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel also advised residents to be aware and keep yourself safe.

She said locals could remove temptation from would-be criminals by avoiding leaving valuables visible in their cars and locking away toys, tools and equipment out of sight. She also suggested joining a local network such as Neighbourhood Support or an online network like Neighbourly and reporting any incidents or suspicious behaviour to NZ Police.

In brief Body found in house A woman found dead in a Christchurch house did not die in suspicious circumstances, police say. Police were called to a residential address on Fletcher Place, Upper Riccarton, at 2.10am yesterday and the area was cordoned from that time onwards. Last night Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Worner, Christchurch CIB, said police had conducted a scene examination and determined there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death. Perched towards the front of the O’Reilly Auditorium, and listening to the high-decibel laughter behind me, it was easy to forget there were only a handful of others watching the One Man Two Guvnors dress rehearsal on Thursday. But such was the effect of the unabashedly ditsy humour, that few of us could avoid gut-busting giggle fits that night. Yep – you can wrap my balls in bacon and send me to the nurse, because the Big Little Theatre Company have absolutely nailed this one. I’ll admit the synopsis of the legendary London comedy show had me scratching my head at first. It’s 1963 and Francis Henshall (Mitchell Farr) – the permanently hungry protagonist, is negotiating life with two Guvnors, attempting to keep each from finding out about the other. One is Roscoe Crabb (Kate McIlroy), visiting Brighton to collect 6000 from his fiancées Dad.

The other is snooty Stanley Stubbers (William Wallis), who is hiding from police and looking for a lover named Rachel. Little do neither Francis nor Stanley know that Roscoe is in fact Rachel, disguised as her own brother, who died shortly before marriage to the ever confused Pauline Clench (Elise Hefferman). Where all the slapstick humour was to fit into that tightly-wound plotline, I struggled to fathom. But as the house lights dimmed and the polished Brighton accents began to babble on stage, boy I was hooked. Like Henshaw’s made-up diagnosis, I think I must have a touch of “disease of the diaphragm” – because I couldn’t stop laughing that night. Farr delivered an absolutely stellar lead performance, unflinchingly consuming an entire envelope live on stage and – during interactions with audience members – firing off unscripted one-liners perfectly attuned to his character. The unsuspecting character of

Alfie (James Brady) also provided an endless stream of amusement. Alfie is a fragile, elderly war veteran attempting to work as a waiter, but impeded by a constant stream of misfortune; and Brady had him and his bumbling behaviour down to a tee. And between the action, Charlie Clench (Magdalene Haugh) earned roars of laughter with interjected quips of wisdom, not least, that “love passes through a marriage quicker than shit passes through a dog”. Musical accompaniment to the show is provided by Wayne Pannett and a band of eclectic, everresourceful instrumentalists who performed toe-tapping numbers with washboards, car horns and even spoons. An Ashburtononly addition were the Waynette dancers, who delivered bright aesthetic dance-interludes and accompaniment oozing in 1960s Brighton. With the play organised in celebration of the Event Centre’s tenth anniversary, it would also be criminal not to mention the

outstanding set that utilised the stage and facilities to full capacity. Aiding seamless transformations between the Brighton Pier and the iconic Cricketers Arms, the big-scale background vistas were a true standout. So, for those who know Commedia Dell’Arte and the surgicalprecision timing it takes, this show was an absolute success. And for those unaware, this show is still awe-inspiringly clever, in both its original scripting and BLTC’s top-notch delivery. The unfathomable time and effort it took to put this show on has absolutely paid off. There’s truly something for everyone – and I urge you to secure your seat, and give yourself a good old ab workout from the laughter. One Man Two Guvnors opened last night at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre. Two more performances will take place – tonight at 7.30pm and tomorrow afternoon, with tickets now on sale from ticketdirect.co.nz

The historic home and garden of artist Bill Sutton, in Christchurch’s red zone, will be saved and restored. Megan Woods, the minister responsible for the city’s regeneration, says the building is unique. “Bill Sutton was one of the most influential artists in New Zealand history and created most of his works in his studio at Templar Street,” she said yesterday. “We want to save it for future generations to visit for its very special cultural and heritage significance.” The government owns the building, which will be gifted to the city. - NZN

Woman robbed A woman walking to her car in central Christchurch has been assaulted and then robbed. Christchurch Metro response manager Senior Sergeant Paul Reeves said a man had been arrested following the serious assault. After robbing her the man ran off. Middleton stays in NZ Mark Middleton, the stepfather of murdered Lower Hutt teenager Karla Cardno, has learned he will not be deported. Middleton was served a deportation notice on April 10 after living in New Zealand for 56 years. Yesterday Middleton told media the decision by immigration officials had been overturned at the ministerial level. - NZME

Teens learn leadership skills By Colin WillisCroft

Two Mid Canterbury students have spent the start of the school holidays honing their leadership skills. Kate Braidwood from Mt Hutt College and Harriet Stock from Ashburton College spent three days this week in Twizel on a leadership programme run by New Zealand Young Farmers. The girls, members of TeenAg clubs at their respective schools, were two of 18 students on the course, which was designed to enhance the skills of emerging leaders within the clubs. They were taught how to set goals, communicate, deal with conflict, run effective meetings and write a curriculum vitae. “It’s about producing confident young adults who can excel in the primary industries,” said NZ Young Farmers school engagement team member Mary Holmes. Kate said the course was an amazing experience. “I met lots of like-minded people, made new friends and learned a lot about myself.”

“Over the three days we met a vet, a shepherd and a farm manager,” she said. “Their advice was really helpful.” The students also visited High Country Salmon, which is one of three farms raising salmon on the hydro canals surrounding Twizel. Kate plans to study a Bachelor of Agricultural Science at Lincoln University next year. Harriet said she got a lot out of the course, particularly finding out about different types of peoples’ characters and how they worked with each other. Her immediate plans were to help build up the membership and competitiveness of the TeenAg club at Ashburton College. Although unsure what her working life holds in store, Harriet said something in the agriculture field appealed, given she enjoys animals and the outdoors. The course was the first of three planned across New Zealand this year. TeenAg clubs are a key part of the work being done by NZ Young Farmers to attract students into the agri-food sector.

Duckmanton’s dad wants answers The father of slain sex worker Renee Duckmanton is demanding to why her killer was allowed to stay in New Zealand after arriving on a fake passport and going on to commit murder. Gambian-born butcher Sainey Marong was jailed for a minimum of 18 years at the High Court in Christchurch yesterday in what a judge described as a premeditated, “cold-blooded”, and “particularly callous and cruel” murder. Marong was subject to a deportation order in May 2016 when he picked up Duckmanton from the city’s red light district, strangled her to death, and set her body on fire. But Duckmanton’s father, Brent McGrath, who sat through the harrowing trial earlier this year, is disgusted that Marong was able to stay in New Zealand. “They know that he ditched his passport in the toilet at the airport but they don’t actually know what his real name is. But despite that, and knowing his status, they gave him a tax number and said, ‘Go hard’,” the Christchurch truck driver said. “Everything [Marong] did was premeditated. Why didn’t they send him back to where he came from? I work hard, I pay my taxes, but I don’t mind because look at the beautiful country we get to live in. Why didn’t they just put him on a plane? I seriously don’t get it.” Marong arrived at Auckland Airport on a flight from Melbourne via Hong Kong on a fake passport on January 10, 2014. He destroyed the passport at the airport,

the court heard. But Marong had been living and working in New Zealand legally at the time of Duckmanton’s murder. Immigration New Zealand confirmed that “up until the date of the crime [Marong] was lawfully in New Zealand”. “Subsequent to his arrest, his status has become unlawful,” said Immigration New Zealand assistant general manager, Peter Devoy. He was unable to answer other questions put to Immigration New Zealand, citing “legal and privacy reasons”. Statutory suppression orders ban

After secondary school, he studied computer science and commerce at university before dropping out to drive a taxi. He left The Gambia on August 28, 2012, leaving behind a wife and three children. After going to neighbouring Senegal, he went to Hong Kong for 14 months before landing in New Zealand. McGrath says immigration controls need tightening to prevent similar tragedies from happening in the future.

“Something has to change or else you’ll have another family going through what we are going through,” he said. “It’s not about blame, it’s about accountability. Just like he’s accountable for what he did to Renee. I have to get something good out of this.” If police hadn’t caught Marong quickly, McGrath fears “he would’ve gone on to become one of New Zealand’s first major serial killers”. “I don’t know if New Zealand has ever seen anything like what he’s done. He’s just sick,” he said. McGrath described his daughter as a fun, caring, and beautiful woman who wanted to have a baby. “She would’ve been an amazing mum,” he said. “I actually wish she’d have had one before this so there was a piece of her still walking around.” McGrath says he suspected his daughter was working on the streets. He had confronted her earlier, and she’d denied it. “She said, ‘Dad, don’t be stupid’. I knew she was lying, I’ve been around a bit, but I left it at that,” he said. “She was so very strong that she would’ve done it anyway no matter what I said. It wasn’t until the police came and told me that she was dead that I knew for sure that she had been [a sex worker]. “She would’ve done a lot of good in this world. She was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.” - NZME

Driver on bail in stolen car – 3 dead The 20-year-old driver of a stolen ute that caused a triple fatal crash in Coromandel was on bail for drugs charges and had previously broken his neck in a serious car smash. Haydn David Clark, 20, from Drury, was driving the ute that police say crossed the centre line and collided with a car containing Jocelyn (Anne) Fielder, 64, and her husband Ian, 66. All three were killed in the crash near the Kopu Bridge on State Highway 25 on Thursday night. The couple, described as “fun-loving, friendly” people, were returning home to Turua after having dinner at a friend’s house. Clark was driving a ute which police say had been reported stolen. It crossed the centre line and collided with the Fielders’ vehicle, police said. Clark’s father Jim, 54, survived the crash and is in hospital. Clark was facing methamphetamine charges and was on bail, including a 24hour curfew order. A small crowd of family and friends, including children, are gathered outside the home of Haydn Clark’s family at Drury. The home is at the rear of a block of units. People are standing outside the unit. Clark’s Facebook page shows he crashed a car in 2014 and suffered a broken neck, which required a hospital stay and to wear a “halo” head brace. One post refers to him losing his driver’s licence, having a vehicle green stickered for not complying with road rules and stating that he owed more than $1000 in fines. In August 2015 he posted a picture of a mangled car with the caption saying it was about a year since he wrote it off. Friends jokingly commented he “still hadn’t learned”, with another saying he was lucky to be alive. Clark commented saying he had learned his lesson since the 2015 accident, adding he had “munted that car”. Clark had posted several videos of carrelated stunts, including one in April 2016 where a car was shown speeding down a road, spinning out and leaving plumes of smoke in its wake. The month before he had posted a video

with a car he said was at his house pulling a similar stunt. “Lazy drivway skid at mine [sic],” he said. Another post asked whether anyone “got any vids of me doing skids in the corvette can u post them? [sic]” Several posts referred to incidents where Clark had appeared in court or had altercations with police. Two flowers have been placed at the scene of the crash. The gerberas were the only thing to mark where the crash took place, after contractors covered up an oil slick early yesterday. The Fielders’ neighbour said the couple had been on their way home from a friend’s place, where they had dinner every Thursday, when the crash happened. “It was a little ritual they had,” he said. The neighbour said he was heartbroken at the deaths of the couple, who he described as “fun-loving, friendly” people. He had heard the crash shortly after finishing work in Kopu on Thursday night. He was washing his truck in a yard in Kopu when he heard the bang, from the crash. “I thought that someone had dropped something from the freight yard. Then I heard sirens. “Then I came over the bridge to come home and bang, there it all was.” He didn’t find out his neighbours were involved until yesterday morning. Speaking to the Herald about hearing the news, he had to fight back tears. “I couldn’t believe it. I still can’t believe it. It’s just wrong.” The neighbour said they had lived in the area for “30 years or so”. They had raised their kids there. Their grandchildren lived in the area too, and had been friends with the neighbours’ children. Outside of work, he said they were “neat” people who enjoyed a laugh as well as being outdoors. “They loved their golf, loved fishing.” Anne Fielder, in particular, was very down to earth. “A spade is a spade with Anne, that’s just how she was.” - NZME

Kim drops sticking point South Korean President Moon Jae-in said yesterday that his rival, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, isn’t asking for the withdrawal of US troops from the Korean Peninsula as a precondition for abandoning his nuclear weapons. If true, this would seem to remove a major sticking point to a potential nuclear disarmament deal. North Korea, a small, authoritarian nation surrounded by bigger and richer neighbours, has always linked its pursuit of nuclear weapons to what it calls a “hostile” US policy that is embodied by the 28,500 US troops stationed in South Korea, the 50,000 stationed in Japan, and the “nuclear umbrella” security guarantee that Washington offers allies Seoul and Tokyo. Although Moon reported that North Korea isn’t asking for the US troops to leave, he said the North still wants the United States to end its “hostile” policy and offer security guarantees. When North Korea has previously talked about “hostility” it has been linked to the US troops in South Korea. It won’t be until Moon and Kim meet next week, and then when Kim is to meet US President Donald Trump sometime in May or June, that outsiders

US president Donald Trump has given his “blessing” for North and South Korea to discuss the end of the Korean War at their summit next week amid a diplomatic push to end the North Korean nuclear standoff. Women see legal abortion closer than ever Pushed by a wave of demonstrations by women’s groups, the homeland of Pope Francis seems closer than ever to legalising abortion. The protests and shifting public opinion have led conservative President Mauricio Macri to call for Congress to launch a debate on a broader legalisation of abortion in Argentina, which currently allows the procedure only in cases of

rape or risks to the mother’s health. A bill allowing elective abortion in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy was introduced in Congress earlier this year with the backing of 70 lawmakers from across the political spectrum. The bill needs 129 votes in the 257-seat lower house and then would go to the Senate. The lower house vote is expected in June. Macri has said that

even though he remains antiabortion, he would not veto the bill if passed. Argentina’s health ministry estimates that between 370,000 to 522,000 Argentine women undergo illegal abortions each year and thousands of women, mainly poor, are hospitalised each year for complications. It is the main cause of maternal death. “What point is there in penal-

ising abortions if they continue to happen?” asked Nelly Minyersky, a 90-year-old lawyer and one of the authors of the bill, who underwent an illegal abortion more than 50 years ago. Charlize Theron isn’t leaving the United States over racism concerns. But the white South Africa-born actress, who has adopted a black daughter and son, says: “I am constantly concerned about the safety of my kids. I don’t know a parent who’s not.” Theron, 42, was quoted in Elle magazine last week saying that she wouldn’t travel to parts of the US with her family because of worries over racism, and that she had thought about leaving the country to keep her children safe. The actress and producer said her comments were “taken to the extreme” in reports. “I was trying to share an honest moment of what my thought process sometimes is. And it was taken to the extreme of a statement that is not how I feel at all,” she said.

ANZAC DAY FEATURE

The not-so-sweet mem Memories of World War One can now only be gathered from books, film clips and family archives, but for many people living in the Ashburton District, memories from World War Two are still very much alive. The number of WWII veterans who can speak about their years of service are dwindling but, for many still living, that war marked their childhood and memories of that time are still fresh. Several residents of Coldstream House shared those memories with reporter Sue Newman.

Betty Gear was nine when World War Two broke out, 15 when it ended. As a young girl living in the heart of London, air raids, bombed out buildings and the death of friends and family were part of her growing years and today, those memories are still raw. “It was absolutely terrifying for a little girl. As children we couldn’t really understand what was happening and why it was happening,” she said. Her family lived in densely populated Greenwich where bombing was constant. Her life was lived between her house and the air raid shelter in the back yard. “The government dug the shelter in our garden, it was an Anderson shelter with corrugated iron. We used to have seven people in this tiny space and you couldn’t sleep because the bombing was so loud. You couldn’t hear

yourself speak let alone sleep.” And each time the family ran to their garden bomb shelter, their loyal dog waited, refusing to enter until each family member was safely inside. Betty’s family counted themselves lucky, their house wasn’t destroyed but it lost its roof and its windows. The roof was replaced by tarpaulin and the windows were boarded up. No point in replacing either as they were likely to be destroyed in the next air raid, she said. “We lived in almost complete darkness.” Like thousands of families, Betty’s considered letting their daughter join the vast evacuation of children from London to the country. She refused, saying she wanted to stay with her family, regardless of the risk. “A lot of children didn’t want to go and for those of us who did

stay, some of the schools were kept open for us. It used to be announced at school at assembly that the school was very sorry to say that such and such had been killed. That happened so often.” Remaining in London, however came at a cost. People lived on edge, always waiting for the next air raid siren to sound, but the toughest issue was rationing, she said. “Those rations were very strict. We had half an ounce of butter per person, per week and very little meat. We did have fish.” Betty recalls the huge bombs that fell and the devastation to large areas of London and she recalls the incendiary bombs that the children dubbed buzz bombs. “They’d come screaming in. I can still hear them. You never saw hysteria, but when the war came people who were really quite reserved, talked to one another a lot

more, they asked each other what it was like for them the night before.” When the news came that the war had ended, Betty said there was music and dancing in the street and after so many sombre years, that was wonderful for children to see. The war might have been over, but the reminders of those years remained for many years in the shape of shattered buildings and the heartbreak of so many deaths, Betty said. “So many homes were destroyed, so if you had somewhere to put a bed in your house you would put one, so you could take people in after the war.” Her family was lucky, they all survived, but the war changed people in many ways, Betty said. “All my growing up was done during the war really, going in and

Cath Bassett Cath Bassett counts herself lucky that, as a country child on a remote West Coast dairy farm, food was never really in short supply during the war. The family ate what they grew, but like the rest of New Zealand, they were on butter rations. “The slogan was butter for Britain. And sugar was rationed too,” she said. But in many ways, living in Taramakau, Cath said, she was sheltered from the worst impacts of the war. Her brothers, as farmers, were exempt from war service, but the war was ever present, at home and at school. “My father served in World War One but he didn’t talk about it much. That war had a terrible impact on the men and they said

Cath Bassett there would never be another war after World War One, but look what happened,” Cath said. When the war ended, shortages of many goods continued because of the huge effort New Zealand made to send food and goods to Britain. “You had to put your name down to get blankets. I was lucky, I got a pair but those shortages lasted for a long time so we just had to wait for things. So much went to Britain during the war and to the troops,” she said. Betty and Ralph married in 1951, but even then the post-war short-

As a six-year-old when World War Two broke out Mary Ward has many memories of those war years, but for her the real impact of those years came through the experiences of her husband, Lester. “I remember my brother Norman was in the tank company and I remember him coming home on leave and hearing all the things he did in camp and then I remember coming home one day and my mother was crying. She said “Norman’s going away overseas.” Norman was fortunate, he came home and Mary recalls trains coming into the station, soldiers leaning out windows waving and families lined up waiting to be reunited with family members they may not have seen for six years. When Mary was 18 she met Lester and they married in 1953. If her war memories were scant, for Lester, who was seven years older, those memories were stark.

Mary Ward “He’d been a prisoner of war for almost the duration of the war. “He was caught in Italy by the Germans and they bundled the soldiers into big trucks and they were driven to a camp in Munich. “He had a pretty tough time. He went away a big, strong person and came home a very small man.” The camp was on a site no larger than a quarter acre section. On that section were row upon row of huts where 800 to 900 men were crammed into every possible space. “It was dreadful for the men but Lester was lucky, he struck some

good chaps in his hut.” Along with hunger, boredom was the biggest issue facing the prisoners but to pass the time they formed sports teams, one hut playing the other. Looking back, Mary said, it was odd the equipment they managed to find. One man had a dart board and another in Lester’s hut had a gramophone and one record, Vera Lynn “At night they’d lie in their bunks and listen to her singing.” The behaviour of camp guards made a huge difference in prisoners’ lives and Lester talked about one who supplied the men biscuits. The camp was surrounded by a 10-foot wire fence and when they were told the war was over, the men rushed at the fence, jumped on it and flattened it, Mary said. Lester didn’t often talk about his experiences but one day a stranger knocked at the Wards door. It was a fellow prisoner of war and they were able to share their memories. Years later Lester and Mary went to Munich hoping to find the camp. Nothing remained. In spite of the horrors of his war experience, Mary said her husband was never bitter or angry about those years. Joan Archer The excitement when World War Two ended is something Joan Archer will never forget. “I was in my last year at high school when the war finished and we were so excited. “People went into Timaru and there was dancing in the streets,” she said. “I can picture where I was sitting when the news came that the war was over.” The crowds that turned out to greet the retuning soldiers were huge, she said and families had to wave placards so they could be found. “It was an absolute melee.” Joan recalls the way Timaru’s Caroline Bay changed during the war. There was barbed wire all around the bay “just in case the Japanese came”, she said. And while New Zealand was a long way from the heart of the war, Joan said church services at night were banned because of a fear that lights could put the country under enemy attack. She remembers how the war changed school life. If your school gym frock wore out, then there were no replacements available. “And we couldn’t get black stockings to wear, we had to wear boys’ socks.”

Julie Burrowes Her mother’s wedding dress is a simple reminder for Julie Burrows of World War Two. “My parents were married dur-

ing the war so my mum was a war bride. “Back in those days people made all their own clothes so my mother made her own wedding dress, it was pure cream and all made by hand.” Her father served overseas, but when Julie asked him about those years, he refused to talk about what had happened and where he’d been, she said. While she is too young to have any memories of the war, Julie attends Anzac services but says it is her mother’s war-time wedding dress that is the greatest reminder of that time of conflict.

Joan Archer Because she lived in the country there was always plenty of milk available, butter was made every Saturday and while many things were in short supply the food basics were not. The war did dramatically change the quality of goods available however. After painstakingly knitting a cardigan and proudly wearing it, Joan remembers washing it and watching all the colour leech out. The good quality wool had all been used for army uniforms. Like all New Zealanders, Joan’s family lived with the dread of finding out family or friends had been killed. “We used to get the paper in the morning to see who had been killed in action and then we’d get in touch with people to

share their sorrow.” Those war years were a time of waiting and wondering, wondering who would be called up and then who wouldn’t come back, Joan said. She recalls packaging of food parcels to send to England. “You’d wrap a fruit cake in calico – it had to be absolutely cold – sew it up and send it away,” she said. As she approaches her 90th birthday, Joan, an ex-primary school teacher, said she has so many memories to enjoy, but those associated with the war are always tinged with sadness. “So many men left their homes and their country. A lot never came back, but they did it for the love of New Zealand.” In her bedroom she has a cher-

The RSA – standing the tests of time If Merv Brenton achieves just one thing under his reign as president of the Ashburton RSA, growing the organisation’s membership, he’ll be a happy man. And to achieve the growth in membership that eludes most RSAs, the Ashburton committee has come up with a new membership category. It will be contacting sports clubs around the district offering them an opportunity to become corporate members. “We’re aware we have to get some new blood in so we’ve come up with this idea of getting sports clubs connected to the RSA. Even if two or three from a club decide to join, that’s two or three new members on our books,” Merv said. The executive committee wanted Ashburton’s RSA to become the place of choice for people wanting to share a drink or social time with Page 4 friends, he said. “We need members because the people within the RSA are ageing.” Clubs that did not come up with creative ways to gain new members were putting their future at risk, Merv said. It wasn’t just clubs in smaller areas that were going into recess, clubs in cities such as Palmerston North and Nelson had closed on the back of falling numbers and the ever tightening regime of rules

Ian and Alison King have owned Hinds Mechanical for nearly 5 years. They moved here from the north island and both say they have settled very well in Hinds. The business has come a long way since they first started, adding more staff and equipment to the place. They keep a range of stock from belts, filters, bulbs, lubricants and much more. Ian says it’s important to try and keep things in stock for local people as it can save them a trip to town. They also stock supercharge batteries, Kumho tyres and Iron man 4x4 gear. They are a stockist and fitting agent for Iron man 4x4 and have a range of gear in their shop along with catalogues. They have a good range of tyres and are competitive with their pricing. They repair and replace everything from car, 4x4, motorbikes, calfateria and even pivot tyres. They also do warrant of fitness for vehicles and trailers. They work on a large variety of vehicles from farm bikes, cars, utes, tractors and trucks. They are MTA approved members and

are able to do servicing and maintenance on new and late model vehicles and are able to carry out diagnostic scans. There is plenty more they want to do to the place over time. Doing on farm servicing is something new they have just added, Ian says it saves the farmers time bringing their gear in when someone can go out to their farm and do it all in one go. From page 5 The number of World War Two vets declines every year, but it is the individuals who join the organisation as associate members who are now its strength, he said. The difference between returned service members and associates comes in the benefits the servicemen and women receive through the organisation’s welfare fund. Funds come from the annual Poppy Day street appeal that was held yesterday. With the loss of ageing returned servicemen and women stories of the war are also lost, Merv said, because people hold those stories close, choosing not to talk about the war because they do not want to revive painful memories. While the membership of the RSA might be changing, its role in ensuring servicemen and women of any war were not forgotten is unchanging. Merv, however, wants to see some change in the way their service is remembered. “It’s always been about Lest we Forget, but I prefer to see this as We Will Never Forget Them. The roots of our organisation are in the past but we need to look forward too. We must maintain the principles of the RSA but times are changing time.” As a challenge, he’d love to see membership rise from 800 to 1000 but more than that he’d like to see the members already on the books making better use of their club, turning out more often on Thursday club nights and sharing camaraderie on other nights too. Saturday, April 21, 2018 Saturday, meals are available each of those nights for members and the public, and an all-comers lunch is served up on Wednesdays. “Having more of our members actually using the club would make a huge difference but anyone can come in here at any time, they just need to sign in. We’d love to see people turning up and enjoying our hospitality.” Merv has taken over the leadership position just ahead of Anzac Day and said he’s stepping in and stepping up at the association’s busiest time. He’s no stranger to the work of the RSA around the commemorative events however, having been MC at services last year in Ashburton. “That’s the one day of the year we’re in the public’s eye all day, but the records here are pretty good; we’ve been doing this for 100 years and it’s just a matter of meeting all the requirements,” he said. The event itself may have changed little over the years, but staging Ashburton’s three services – dawn, cemetery and civic – now comes accompanied by a raft of regulations that must be met, Merv said. Those constantly changing regulations make it a bit tougher each year to make the organisation’s Anzac Day commitments. In the lead up to Anzac Day, Merv and his team visit schools and tell the Anzac story and they’re visiting resthomes to carry out services ahead of the actual day. The resurgence in interest in Anzac Day was heartening for the RSA, he said and that growth in interest showed through each year, with growing numbers, particularly of younger people, attending services.

e’re adapting the way we operate things and we’re hoping you’ll come along for the journey. For more than 130 years here at the Guardian, the focus has been on bringing quality, local news to you in the newspaper – six days a week for 52 weeks of the year. It’s been our mission statement, our goal and, in most instances, we’ve achieved that. But, the world around us is changing. And so, we must change with it. And our challenge is to do so while not impacting directly on you, our valued print and digital subscribers. In this world of technology where everything is sitting at the tip of your fingers, bringing news to people in a prompt and timely

fashion is paramount. Which means that it’s no longer just about having the news sitting at the end of your driveway each morning – we now need to ensure we have something new and fresh for you to read at lunchtime, afternoon tea time and through those awkward family dinners where you don’t really even want to speak to anyone. And so, we’re shaking things up a bit. We have our much-adored print

edition, six days a week, but we also have a successful website and, of course, the Ashburton App from which we can relay news to the community. Finding the perfect balance where we don’t give one a misjustice over the other is a bit like getting a marble to sit still in the middle of a see-saw – but we’re going to be giving it a go. So, from now, you’ll see a stronger presence from us on our online platforms. The Guardian website will be updated with fresh, not-seenbefore news at various points during the day and the Ashburton App will continue to provide news throughout the day. It’s us delivering more than we have delivered before and keeping up with the times and

the demands of what is going on around us. We’re not always going to get it right, but who likes perfection anyway? There will be times when things should be online for immediate consumption, but due to any number of restraints they won’t be. But over time the goal is to bring a whole new level to how we produce our news, not just catering for our usual readers, but opening up news from within the Ashburton District and its surrounds to a whole new realm of people. Sitting side by side that coverage will be that from the Selwyn App which launches next month. With a fulltime dedicated journalist in former Guardian em-

ployee Jonathon Leask, who will be bringing the only form of news from the Selwyn District to the people from within its boundaries – once again, our opportunities increase even more. It’s an exciting time and the chance to bring you more news than you’ve ever had before across all platforms also has the team here at the Guardian buzzing about the potential ahead. Minister of short straws Nick Lindo

hielded, these days, by a patriarchal beard of Old Testament proportions, Andrew Little is the current holder of the position of Minister of Short Straws – which doubles with that of Minister of Poison Chalices – in Jacinda Ardern’s, still-creaking, coalition administration. Thus, it is Little’s role to take to the good folk in Taranaki the bad news that Jacinda – arbitrarily – has decided to initiate the beginning of the end to all oil drilling, and prospecting for the “black gold”, in New Zealand waters. As approximately 11,000 of those “good folk” rely on the oil industry for their livelihoods, it is hardly surprising the local mayor described the announcement as a “kick in the guts” (or it may have been, “teeth”). Even though the jobs may not be lost overnight, but merely in “due course”, Little’s bolt from the blue message is hardly designed to bring either confidence or feelings of long-term security to the area. What’s more, it should have been Ardern herself fronting up to the people most likely to be affected by her no-consultation policy and not her “Minister for All Things Dark and Difficult”. As we all know, it was only Little’s selfless decision to stand aside from the leadership of the Labour Party in favour of – and in time for – Ardern to get the top job. In my book, Little deserved some much more appealing tasks than those to which Adern subsequently appointed him. Another of his responsibilities, one recalls, is to bring a happy ending to the Pike River Mine

PHOTO AP disaster, whereby the bones of the victims are brought out safely from the mine, without endangering the lives of the rescuers. “Show pony” Winston Peters was seen and heard shouting the odds outside that mine before the last election telling us how a change of government was going to resolve the problem. Doubtless, I was not alone in hoping he, in a moment of breathtaking, but doomed, bravura, would offer to do the job himself. Unsurprisingly, that did not happen, so now it is poor old Andrew who is left to tip-toe

through the tangle and bring home the bones to the families. I have heard it also rumoured that when Mr Little is not directly involved in specific issues, he is, in addition to all his other heavy reponsibilities, Minister of Justice. How much more can the overworked minister be expected to take on? While the immediate past leader of the party struggles with his portfolios, Ardern has done a runner to “Gay Paree” and other European capitals, where she has walked on red carpets and powwowed with the great and good.

She is said to be having her “nuclear moment” which I assume to be one of her pregnancy cravings. Most mothers-to-be go through such overwhelming urges, but those tend to be a longing for just-ripe strawberries or tulips from Amsterdam. Obviously, an expectant prime minister yearns for rather different objectives so a “nuclear moment” should not surprise us. As Ardern’s condition is virtually unheard of for a PM in office, the literature available on the matter is scarce, if not actually, non-existent. We must therefore make of any of Ardern’s hankerings what we may. There is, though, just the possibility that Ardern has in the deepest recesses of her then very childish mind – if she was actually alive at the time – memories of her illustrious predecessor’s speech at the Oxford Union, when David Lange made his legendary quip to one of his debating opponents when he said, “I can smell the uranium on your breath”! Soon after that, nuclear-powered ships were banned for ever from New Zealand ports. Like all PMs, male or female, Ardern, too, no doubt hopes to leave a significant and long-lasting legacy. Elsewhere, peeping above the political parapet, comes news the Greens have, at last, selected a successor to the self-immolated, Metiria Turei. The new co-leader of the party is to be Marama Davidson. Better-qualified gurus than I have described the appointment as a significant “lurch to the left” for the Greens as Davidson is a “card-carrying Marxist”. What we should expect from that appellation remains to be seen. I certainly don’t see her coleader colleague, James Shaw, in that bracket. As that statesman-of-ourtimes, the one and-only Donald Trump is fond of saying: “We shall have to wait and see.”

YOUR VIEW Smoke and mirrors In her latest Guardian column (Tuesday, April 19) Labour List MP Jo Luxton states: “Labour will increase spending on regional roading improvements by 98 per cent, investing a total of $6.1 billion.” This would be good news, but I’m sorry to say to Ms Luxton the figure she claims is nowhere in the spending plan her Transport Minister Phil Twyford has released recently.

In it the regional improvements category quotes upper spending limits over the next 10 years: $140 million, $180 million, $210 million, $210 million, $210 million, $210 million, $180 million, $190 million, $190 million, $200 million. Over 10 years those figures total $1.92 billion, nowhere near Ms Luxton’s figure of $6.1 billion for regional improvements. Incidentally the lower spending limits over 10 years total just $750 million, again a very long way

One-in-three Kiwis struggle More than one-in-three New Zealanders is either struggling or only just getting by, according to new research on the financial wellbeing of Kiwis. The ANZ Financial Wellbeing study is the first time the bank has extended its research beyond testing financial literacy and behaviour to study how people’s socio-economic background and psychological factors influence people’s financial wellbeing. The research is designed to test how well someone is able to meet their current financial commitments and needs comfortably and whether they have the resilience to continue doing so in the future, and was set up by UK financial capability expert Elaine Kempson. It found that while the majority of people were either doing okay (40 per cent) or had no worries (23 per cent), 24 per cent were only getting by and 13 per cent were struggling. Those with no worries were more likely to be older, male, have a university qualification, earn more and be in a partnership. Both partners were likely to

be savers and the individuals had high levels of savings and low debt. Those who were doing okay were likely to have secure em-

ployment and a steady household income. They had lower levels of consumer debt than those just getting by, although mortgage debt levels were sim-

ilar. For those just getting by it was tough to make ends meet. Most could meet the every day costs of paying for food or bills, but 37 per cent said they did not have any savings and 38 per cent described their current financial situation as “bad”. Household incomes were more likely to be below average and most said a government payment or allowance was their main income. Of those who worked many had variable incomes. Those just getting by had an average of $2600 outstanding on consumer debt and were more likely to borrow from friends and family and financial institutions like payday lenders. They also had lower savings. Of those who were struggling 92 per cent said they sometimes, often or always ran short of money to pay for food and other regular expenses. A further 79 per cent did not have any savings and 84 per cent could survive for less than a month without having to borrow if their income dropped by a third. - NZME

In brief Staff underpaid A Christchurch restaurant owner fined $70,000 for under-paying 25 workers said he did not agree with New Zealand employment laws and ran his business “how it is in Japan”. Japan Power, which trades as Samurai Bowl was fined $70,000 by the Employment Relations Authority after found to be ignoring employment laws. It says director Masakazu Takeuchi breached the rights of 25 employees by failing to correctly pay annual leave, holiday pay and paying minimum wage rather than the agreed hourly rate. - NZME

IRD left $800m short New Zealand is missing out on about $800 million in its annual tax take due to the country’s self-employed under-reporting their income by about 20 per cent, according to the Inland Revenue Department. Research by Victoria University and the government’s tax authority estimates New Zealand’s self-employed, which account for 12 per cent of the workforce, on average underreport their income by a fifth. Statistics New Zealand figures show there were 306,100 self-employed in the country as at December 31, up from 260,600 a year earlier. - NZME

Firm copies artist’s work, apologises Shane Hansen is stubborn. So when a campervan hire company copied his artwork on vans without his permission he wasn’t going to let it go. And he’s glad he didn’t. After filing a claim in the Auckland High Court against Escape Rentals last year, which was followed by months of discussions and negotiations, the New Zealand company issued a public apology to the Tutukaka artist. “I wanted to show others that you can actually stand up for something. Heaps of artists have opened up to me and said the same thing happened to them or a friend and they’ve done nothing about it,” Hansen said. “For me this is who I am and this is what I do and so I needed

that apology in order to say that they acted unlawfully, and they did take that from me, and my moral rights were breached.” Hansen filed the claim in February last year after a friend texted him a photo of an Escape Rentals van he’d seen travelling around the South Island in January. Hansen alleged the company copied five of his artworks and spray painted them on rental vans. He said this was a copyright infringement, a breach of his moral rights and a breach of the Fair Trading Act. The court date was set for midJuly but the two parties reached a settlement outside of court and Escape Rentals posted the public apology on its website and Facebook page on Wednesday

acknowledging it “crossed a line and copied a renowned NZ artist’s work without consent or permission”. Brendon Pope, general manager of Escape Rentals, told the Northern Advocate the company regretted the mistake. “We didn’t mean to cause Shane Hansen any distress or disrespect, and we’re certainly sorry if we have. This is why we’ve apologised. We’ve reached a settlement but more importantly we’ve learned a valuable lesson. We’ve made some changes to our approach to artwork, now everything we’re doing is wholly original and I think that’s a good thing.” Pope did not wish to comment further. - NZME

Mid Canterbury’s senior netball competition kicked off on Thursday night and things ran true to form across the board. Usual heavyweights, Celtic, made light work of their match against a youthful Ashburton College A side, winning 34-14 in a match which they dominated from the outset. With a strong mid-court, the green and whites fed the ball beautifully down court to allow their sharpshooters, who found their targets quickly, to work their magic.

The win sounded a warning to the other teams in the competition that they mean business – a motion which their opponents next week, Southern, will have taken plenty of notice of. Southern squared off with United on Thursday night and despite a valiant effort in a match which swung backwards and forwards throughout, they were unable to hold off the United charge, losing 31-36. United played an exciting brand of netball with big passes down the court to their shooters who weren’t afraid to shoot from anywhere inside the circle.

Methven secured a confidence-building victory in their opening match of the season, coming out on the right side of a nailbiting effort against Hampstead, 30-29. Mt Somers, who are a new team to the top tiers of local netball this season, made the best possible start to their foray into the competition with a dominant victory over Southern B, 47-14. With strong aspirations of making it into the Premier part of the competition after the completion of the grading rounds, it was the perfect start for the competition newcomers, who looked slick across the court.

In other action from the night’s play, Celtic C, one of three sides in the top level of the competition for the club, matched their clubmates by producing a comprehensive win against Ashburton College B while Celtic B completed the hat-trick of results for the club for the night with their 52-18 win over Rakaia. Next week’s match-ups will see a battle between first round winners, Methven and United, Ashburton College v Hampstead, Celtic B v Celtic C, Southern B v Ashburton College B, Celtic v Southern and Rakaia and Mt Somers.

The permutations around the prospect of three games of rugby in the space of a week won’t be lost on Mid Canterbury senior sides. With an extra round of play squeezed in on Anzac Day, the next week will be make or break time for the five local teams competing in the Combined Country Rugby competition, with a maximum of 15 points up for grabs across the three matches. That could be enough to secure a playoff spot for some teams, while it will be enough to see the business end of the competition become nothing more than a formality for others. Coaches will be charged with ensuring they handle their players’ workloads closely, while trying to maximise the opportunity at the same time. Rakaia will head into the busy period having had the luxury of a week off last weekend with the bye, but that hasn’t stopped coach Wayne Foxcroft from sitting by the phone for most of the week with their opponents, Hornby, struggling. In three matches so far, the Hornby side have had an average

of 70 points scored in each game. “They’ve clearly been battling,” Foxcroft said. “There has been some word about that they might not be seeing the competition out, whether that’s true or not I’m not sure. “We’ve trained as if we are playing, but also have been waiting for the phone to ring too.” Should the match go ahead, which looked likely, Foxcroft will use the opportunity to bring some of his lesser known names into the starting line up and rest some of his more known stars with a big week ahead. “We are in a good position, because we have real depth in our squad which is great.

“So, some of those guys who have been starting probably won’t and we’ll bring in some of the guys off the bench.” With maximum points from their three games thus far, Rakaia have an opportunity to make it four from four today and Foxcroft knows that the week ahead could see them cement a spot in the top tier of the competition come playoff time. “We have a big week, but so does everyone. “Prebbleton on Wednesday will be a big game and then there’s Southern next Saturday. “The boys know what three wins this week would mean for the team so hopefully we can go

Hopes bleak for Read All Blacks return The prospect of Kieran Read leading the All Blacks against France in June is looking increasingly bleak. Nothing official has been announced but All Blacks coach Steve Hansen and Crusaders counterpart Scott Robertson have both cast considerable doubt that Read will be fit for the three-test series.

The 32-year-old hasn’t played since suffering a back injury which required surgery in December to ease pain in his leg. A long-range forecast was for Read to return to action in today’s home match against the Sunwolves but his rehabilitation has taken longer than expected. He is yet to even train with the Crusaders and Robertson said

Armstrong settles Lance Armstrong has reached a $5 million settlement with the federal government in a whistleblower lawsuit that could have sought $100 million in damages from the cyclist who was stripped of his seven Tour de France wins after admitting he used performance-enhancing drugs throughout much of his career. The deal came as the two sides prepared for a trial that was scheduled to start May 7. Armstrong’s former US Postal Service team-mate Floyd Landis filed the original lawsuit in 2010 and is eligible for up to 25 per cent of the settlement. - PA

Methven nabs own tourney Methven bowlers took top honours in their own tournament at the McNally Street Indoor Bowls stadium on Thursday night. The Methven Rosebowl is traditionally one of the first tournaments of the indoor bowls season and 12 teams of four took to the mats for the contest, all in search of glory.

An impressive last-start winner of the Gr.3 Manawatu Classic, Sherrif is on trial for an Australian trip with both Queensland and South Australia in the mix, though James

over 1600m before appreciating the step up to 2000m at Awapuni. said it is more likely he will head to the latter state. “I’m tending to lean towards South Australia rather than Queensland,” he said. “If he goes for the Queensland Derby he’d have to run in the Grand Prix beforehand and that could be a run too many. “By going to South Australia he can go straight in the Derby over there then come home.”

Golden girls in NZ team Ashburton rowers, Mollie Gibson and Veronica Wall have gained national recognition by being named in the Rowing NZ Junior side yesterday. The pair, who are both students at Ashburton College, have enjoyed a stellar year on the waters around the country, including a domination of the single sculls and double sculls at the recent Maadi Cup championships at Lake Ruataniwha near Twizel last month. Wall made the side last year, but it is the first appearance in the silver fern for Gibson who was one of the stories of the Maadi Cup after working her way brilliantly through to the final of the single sculls before bursting away with the gold in the final against a strong line up of scullers. In an extra great result for rowing locally, Justin Wall has been named as one of the coaches of the national side. Gibson will be a part of the Junior Women’s Quadruple Scull, which is also the reserve squad for the Junior Women’s Double Sculls. Wall has been given the coveted spot of the Junior Women’s Single Scull – a further sign that her future in the sport will see her competing at the elite level in the future. The squad was announced yesterday at Lake Karapiro and it will be straight to work for the crews before they depart for Racice in Veronica Wall and Mollie Gibson are on their way to the Czech Republic in August. the Czech Republic in early August.

Ko still has the talent, says Leadbetter Lydia Ko’s former coach David Leadbetter says it’s been tough to watch the deterioration in the Kiwis’ game. Writing on his website, Leadbetter said he was responding to the many stories circulating about the state of Ko’s game over the past year. The coach, who worked with Ko from 2013 to 2016, said he and colleague Sean Hogan might not have had all of the answers, but she was on track to become one of the greatest LPGA players of all time. “Hopefully, Lydia is able to resurrect her game. “She obviously still has the talent, but it’s not always an easy task to climb back up the mountaintop. “Lydia is a great young lady, we only wish the best for her. “We honestly felt that if the decision was left entirely up to her, that she would still be with us. “Not only did Lydia change her swing and putting coaches, but also her equipment company (Callaway), caddy, workout coach, sports psychologist, and putting grip company. “So many changes can be extremely hard to absorb. This year, she even changed her swing coach and caddy once again. “In a nutshell, it is an interesting story. One that will probably have more questions than answers. “Lydia can certainly win more tournaments, even Majors, but there’s no possible way that she can play better than she played for those first three years. “It just goes to show, that not

all of this, she had an excellent chance of remaining No 1 in the world with a solid finish at the last tournament of the year. “She shot 62 (10 under par) in the second round and things seemed to be on track. “Her last round, unfortunately, was very average and she just lost out on winning the LPGA Player of the Year. “In this day and age, we have ways of measuring energy output in the swing. “In the last quarter of the year, she had lost 20 per cent of her energy which could only mean one thing – complete fatigue. “Unfortunately, to the unknowledgeable, this can be misconstrued as experiencing swing issues. “Well, you will have swing issues when you’re too fatigued to workout, practice, and are mentally drained. “At the end of the year, she and her “team” decided that even though she had won five tournaments including a Major earlier in the year, that they wanted to move on. “This was obviously perfectly within their rights to do so, but it was a shame considering the success that she had with Sean and I. We were very close with Lydia and we were sad about the separation. “However, life goes on.’’ Ko’s current world ranking is 16 and in the seven tournaments she has played this year, she has missed the cut once with her best placing being tied for 10th in the HSBC World Championship in Singapore last month. - NZME
