It might have been a long two-week wait for swimmers when the EA Networks Centre pools closed for maintenance, but that wait is almost over. Come the early hours of Monday morning, the pool complex will reopen. Its pools have been resealed, broken or cracked tiles have been replaced and each has been filled with fresh, warm water. The shutdown was part of a routine maintenance schedule, Ashburton District Council service delivery group manager Neil McCann said. “The whole process has gone very well and we’re all on track to be ready to get back and operating Monday morning,” he said. Refilling the pools started at 8am on Friday and levels rose quite quickly, McCann said. The closure had been scheduled for early January because attendance figures indicated that was the quietest time of the year, he said. The complex’s stadium is now on a two-week shutdown while rails are installed for curtains that can be hung between courts to prevent stray balls from one court moving onto another. Dead man’s evidence ‘okay’ Evidence of a dead man will be allowed when police prosecute an Ashburton man for dishonestly taking a caravan. The case has been before the Ashburton District Court since early 2017 and police allege Harry James Mitchell, 47, dishonestly took the caravan as well as damaging it and trying to set fire to it. Mitchell has had at least six separate defence counsel as he has fought the charges over that time. The case was back before Judge Joanna Maze yesterday, and she had been asked to rule on the admissibility of evidence of Russell Kennelly, who police say was the

complainant and caravan owner. In a defended hearing that started last April, Kennelly said he had bought a caravan from Mitchell for $6700 then allowed him to rent it for $100 a week. The payments stopped when the caravan was moved by Kennelly, at the request of Mitchell, and damage to a television was said to have occurred. Police say the caravan was then moved by Mitchell and found a few months later with a different number plate and paint job. Kennelly’s ownership of the caravan was challenged at the April hearing and the judge at the time adjourned the case so Kennelly, who ran a cara-

borrowed $6700 from Kennelly and that he was paying it off at $100 a week; the caravan had been collateral for the loan. There was no paperwork, like a sale and purchase agreement, to support Kennelly’s assertions. She said it was not fair that her client would be assessed on his demeanour in the witness box as well as his answers, while the judge would only have the written document to assess Kennelly’s credibility. Crown prosecutor Andrew McRae said Mitchell would actually have an advantage in that he knew what was in Kennelly’s evidence and would have time to prepare answers.

McRae said the crown would not present the photos Kennelly had been sourcing. After hearing legal arguments from both lawyers yesterday, Judge Maze said Kennelly’s written evidence from the April hearing could be presented by police when a new hearing took place. The onus would be on the prosecution to prove Mitchell’s version of events was not reasonably possible. She remanded the case to Tuesday, when it will be added to a list of defended charges to be heard that day. She said it needed to be dealt with urgently as it had been before the court for far too long.

Mid Canterbury’s Winchmore Research Station is being sold by crown institute AgResearch after 72 years of providing grazing and arable analysis for the farming community. The asking price is unknown as the transaction will be carried out by private treaty with offers taken to the end of next month unless the property is sold beforehand. Originally 308 hectares, the farm is being subdivided into two parcels, either side of the Dromore Methven Road, with the larger parcel of about 247ha to be sold on the open market. All research on the land northwest of Ashburton will not be entirely lost as a condition of the sale is that long term fertiliser trials are carried on for a further 30 years. As late as last year AgResearch chief executive Tom Richardson had said the crown researcher was committed to ongoing trials at Winchmore to keep adding to science. Infrastructure director John O’Dea said AgResearch’s projects and priorities had changed in recent years with more research held on commercial farms and the focus was on small scale intensive research. “The sale of Winchmore will enable AgResearch to invest in its wider research facilities, and thus continue driving prosperity by transforming agriculture,’’ he said. Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury vice-president David Clark said farmers would be disappointed that more government funded research was being lost in farming. He said Mid Canterbury would virtually have no research soon by Crown Research Institutes (CRIs) when it was needed the most by farmers so they could remain world leaders in agriculture. ‘The continued erosion of research capability from CRIs such as AgResearch is just further eroding research in agriculture. FANZ chief executive Vera Power said the site had provided extremely useful information for almost 70 years. “This has allowed us to track changes to pastoral land as agriculture evolves and supports our evidence base for sustainable management.” O’Dea said Winchmore’s Lismore soils and spray irrigation would enable a wide range of future cropping and grazing options. “Modern de-stoning technology now means the stony Lismore soils are regarded as some of the most sought after and

productive soils for intensive vegetable and arable production.’’ Crops on the farm this season include potatoes, wheat, barley, maize, peas and specialist seeds, with a small area retained in lucerne and permanent pasture. Historically, the farm had limited winter-forage cropping and was mainly used as a grazing property. The research station was established in the late 1940s during the introduction of border-strip irrigation in farming, and looked at the benefits of irrigation and phosphate fertiliser for pasture and crop production as well as sheep and beef farming. Winchmore was part of 8100 hectares bought by George Hart in 1853 which in 1945 was transferred to His Majesty the King “for the purpose of the Small Farms Act 1932-1933’’. A year later a proposal was put forward to Cabinet for a research and experimental irrigation station on 283ha of Crown land near Ashburton. In the 1950s and 1960s Winchmore Irrigation Research Station developed automated irrigation system technology. Over the next two decades re-

search monitored the grass grub beetle and other crop pests, in line with the rise of insecticides. Long term trials on irrigation and phosphate fertiliser have resulted in more than 500 science publications being published on superphosphate, nutrient cycling; reactive phosphate rock application, soil physics; soil organic matter and soil biology. Research extended to experimental crops such as paddy rice, field peas, malting barley and apples. Five new pivot irrigators added in 2017 to replace an old border dyke system were part of a $2 million upgraded irrigation system to future-proof research at Winchmore. Leading up to the sale announcement, scientists were expecting to use the modern irrigators for new research in different farmland uses, optimising water for farm production and new digital technologies. Included in the sale is a range of buildings including offices, meeting rooms, workshop and implement sheds, a woolshed and covered yards and a new set of cattle yards. Ngai Tahu had first right of refusal but declined to buy the property.

Ashburton’s Burns night celebration will be held at 6pm on February 3 at the Ashburton Sinclair Centre, with a traditional Scottish meal, entertainment and an address to the haggis. This year for the first time, the event will also celebrate the coming together of three groups with their roots in Scotland – Ashburton’s Scottish Society, the Ashburton Pipe Band and Ashburton’s highland dancing fraternity. As well as the Burns Night dinner, the event will include entertainment by highland dancers and the pipe band.

Village Green update What will be a new style housing development for the Ashburton District, The Village Green near Lake Hood, has taken one giant step towards ground work beginning. Developers John Skevington and Joanne Ruane have received their resource consent for the project which will eventually see 32 homes built in a village style development. It’s a project that’s been more than 12 years in the planning. Skevington said the project was still on target for work to begin early next months and he is just waiting for one or two issues to be ticked off by the Ashburton District Council.

dings and leave them to pack everything up,” he said. “Sometimes we’d have three weddings on a Saturday, but people don’t get married in churches so much now.” Not surprisingly, Graham’s working life also involved plants. He did his horticulture apprenticeship in the Ashburton Domain, stayed on and rose to the rank of foreman. He might be 81 but, show season is about to start and he’ll be on board at virtually every event around the South Island – usually as a judge, occasionally as an exhibitor – however, he’s no longer chasing the glory of national awards. He already has a number of those certificates tucked away. He’s still a big player in the local dahlia group and at its shows and is happy to share his knowledge. Today he reckons he’s the last of the old dahlia experts still to be hitting the show circuit. “It looks as though I’m the grandfather of New Zealand dahlias. I’ve been involved probably longer than anyone else in New Zealand now,” he said.

When it comes to sticking with something they love, Graham Gunn has it mastered. He’s logged 64 years as organist with St Andrew’s Church and 60 years as a dahlia grower, exhibitor and judge and, at 81, he can’t see any reason why he’d pull the pin on either of his passions any time soon. His love affair with dahlias goes back to his primary school days and the influence of his school principal and a teacher who was a keen horticulturalist. “In those days there were a lot of flower shows and I exhibited as a child. I had great encouragement, especially from my mother. She was very keen and I ended up getting involved in all the flower shows around Ashburton,” Graham said. He’s not sure why dahlias became his flower of choice, other than their popularity at the time, but he knows why he’s stuck with them. They’re the flower that keeps on giving, blooming for several months with their tubers lasting for years. “They reward you well if you keep cutting, tying them up, spraying and watering. They’re good value.” Today Graham’s dahlia plot is small, just a few borders in his backyard. It’s a big step back from the days when he worked a quarter-acre section on Trevors Road, growing a range of flowers to sell and, with his dahlias, for the show bench. “It got to the stage where I had to stop. I used to dig it all by hand but it was just too much work. It was starting to beat me and I wasn’t going to have that,” he said. Unlike many dahlia experts, Graham has never dabbled in breeding new varieties. He doesn’t grow from seed and is happy to stick with his tried and true favourites. “When you sow seeds you get a lot of strange things, but you do get a few you might consider good. It takes a lot of time and patience, but it’s good if you get something really good.” New varieties or ‘risings’ do come on to the show bench, but when it comes to judging, the same rules apply whether they’re a new vari-

ety or one that’s been around for decades. “New risings still have to conform to standards that have been set.” The life of a dahlia judge is not always an easy one. Younger exhibitors, particularly those who’re breeding new varieties, have a very different approach to the game to exhibitors of yesteryear, he said. “I supposed I loved judging more in the early days. Now exhibitors are most competitive and they’re very critical. As judge I have to be very careful because they’re prepared to have you on. It does spoil it a bit for me, but they all want to win.” Graham’s never backed down

from an unhappy exhibitor. “I can stick up for myself, I can justify my decisions.” Judges sit exams today; in Graham’s day they didn’t. Qualifying to do the job was about building up a reputation as a person who knew his flowers. He reckons he’s the last judge left standing who got the job without a qualification, but qualifications don’t always mean you can do the job, he said. “Theory is all very well, but it’s your eye at the end of the day.” Judging is about more than strolling around deciding which blooms are best. It’s hard work and Graham admits he’s pretty knackered after a day as sole judge at a big show.

When it comes to dahlias, he doesn’t like to play favourites, but admits he’s a fan of red flowers, dark red and he prefers pom poms, small water lilies and collarettes. For most of his show years Graham has juggled commitments as an organist at St Andrew’s, and later at St Stephen’s too, with commitments on the dahlia show bench. He remembers the tight schedule needed to fit everything in at weekends. “My parents were very supportive and on Saturdays we’d fill both cars with flowers and take them to a show. I’d put them on the show bench and then I’d come home in my car to play the organ at wed-

Motorist let child take control of car

Dog left for 40 minutes in a hot vehicle

Police are appealing for help to identify a motorist photographed allowing a child to take the wheel while she was driving on Auckland’s Southern Motorway. A witness captured an image of the driver, head down and on a phone, while a child sat on her lap, in peak-hour traffic on Thursday. The photo supplied to the Herald showed the child with both hands on the steering wheel. While police were not aware of receiving a report of the incident, Auckland Motorways Police Sergeant Andrew Meale urged anyone who could have relevant information, to get in touch. Meale said it was a reminder for drivers to ensure all occupants in a vehicle were properly restrained. “Wearing your seatbelt and making sure your children are properly restrained will keep you and your children safe, as

even a low-speed impact can cause a great deal of harm to an unrestrained child. “Keeping children restrained at all times when they are travelling in a vehicle also reduces the risk of the driver getting distracted, which could potentially pose a risk to the safety of other road users,” Meale said. Meale also took the chance to remind motorists it was “never safe” for a driver to take photographs from a vehicle in active traffic lanes. “We also want to urge motorists who witness anyone driving dangerously to report it to police at the earliest opportunity, but most importantly when it is safe to do so.” Speaking to the Herald following the incident, the witness said her attention was first brought to the car when she spotted a kid “jumping around” on the front seat. “He’s jumping around and she’s play-fighting and next

thing he disappeared and I saw him jump into the driver’s seat. “She moved into the left lane and I got alongside her and I saw her texting on the phone and the kid driving the car, she wasn’t even holding the steering wheel.” The motorist said the incident occurred in the Manukau area about 5pm. Peak-hour traffic was moving slowly initially, but “it cleared up and all of a sudden ... everyone was starting to do 60, 70, 80 [km/h]”, the woman said. Although driving herself, she said she felt compelled to take photos to serve as a safety warning to other motorists and perhaps to protect the child. “I just couldn’t believe it ... so yes I grabbed my phone and took a photo, but I couldn’t believe what I was seeing,” she said. The woman said the child appeared to be “having a laugh” while driving. - NZME

The SPCA had to break two dogs out of hot cars on Thursday – with one distressed pup having been stuck in the vehicle for 40 minutes. “Yesterday was the first nice day we have had in Wellington in a number of days and along with that we also had a concerning number of cases of dogs in hot cars in just one day,” said SPCA spokeswoman Jessie Gilchrist. “Our inspectorate team received over six calls from concerned members of the public about dogs in hot cars, and had to break two dogs out of vehicles for their safety. “If one good day is like this, we don’t want to imagine what the rest of summer is like.” One dog was found by inspectors trying to crawl under a seat to the nearest bit of shade it could find. “It was drooling, and had urinated in distress,” Gilchrist said. The dog was taken back to the centre for a full vet examination. “Yesterday it was around 21 degrees, in 10 minutes the dogs in those cars would have been sitting in 31 degree heat, in 30 minutes it would be 40 degrees. One

of those dogs was in the car for over 40 minutes.” On top of this, the owners of the dogs were abusive to inspectors, she said. “It was a shame to see the owners of the dogs becoming abusive to our inspectors, questioning what they were doing, telling them their pets were fine, and asking who was going to pay the costs of the broken window. “We are looking out for the welfare of their pets and seeing easily preventable cases like these, met with abuse is disappointing.” Gilchrist urged people not to leave their pets in hot cars. “It takes only minutes for a pet left in a vehicle on a warm day to succumb to heatstroke and suffocation. “Most people don’t realise how hot it can get in a parked car on a balmy day, let alone a sweltering hot summer day.” On a 30°C day, temperatures in a car with windows down can reach 39°C within five minutes, and 49°C in half an hour. “If the purpose of your trip is not for your dog, then please leave them at home.” - NZME

Trump axes Pelosi trip She imperilled his State of the Union address. He denied her a plane to visit troops abroad. The shutdown battle between President Donald Trump and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is playing out as a surreal game of constitutional brinkmanship, with both flexing their political powers from opposite ends of Pennsylvania Avenue as the negotiations to end the month-long partial government shutdown remain stalled. In dramatic fashion, Trump issued a letter to Pelosi, just before she and other lawmakers were set to depart on the previously undisclosed trip to Afghanistan and Brussels. Trump belittled the trip as a “public relations event” – even though he had just made a similar warzone stop – and said it would be best if Pelosi remained in Washington to negotiate to reopen the government. “Obviously, if you would like to make your journey by flying commercial, that would certainly be your prerogative,” wrote Trump, who had been smarting since Pelosi, the day before, called on him to postpone his January 29 State of the Union address due to the shutdown. Denying military aircraft to a senior lawmaker – let alone the speaker, who is second in line to the White House, travelling to a combat region – is very rare. Lawmakers were caught off guard. Queen Elizabeth II’s husband, Prince Philip, was involved in a car crash yesterday while driving in rural England but was not injured. Buckingham Palace said Philip, 97, was checked by a doctor after the accident and determined to be fine. The palace said the two-car accident happened near Sandringham Estate, the queen’s country retreat in eastern England. Witnesses told the BBC Philip appeared “very shocked” and shaken after the collision, which caused the Land Rover he was driving to overturn. Norfolk Police said the drivers of both cars, a Land Rover and a Kia, were given alcohol breath tests under routine procedures following a collision. The force said both drivers tested negative. “The male driver of the Land

Rover was uninjured. The female driver of the Kia suffered cuts while the female passenger sustained an arm injury, both requiring hospital treatment,” the police force said. The two women from the Kia were treated at nearby Queen Elizabeth Hospital and discharged, the statement said. Witnesses described seeing broken glass and debris at the scene. Police did not say how the accident happened. There was no indication anyone was arrested for a driving offence. Philip had a passenger in his car, but the palace did not identify the person. It is likely the prince was travelling with a protection officer, a standard security procedure for Britain’s senior royals. Philip has largely retired from public life. Still, it appears even the Bronx-born artist didn’t anticipate the response to the 58-second video that she posted to her Instagram account – a denunciation of the shutdown that quickly racked up millions of views and inspired calls for her to run for president.

Happy Birthday Betty Ryan Reynolds has joked that Betty White is his “ex-girlfriend” in a birthday tribute to the iconic actress. The Deadpool star – who is married to Blake Lively – took to social media to wish the Golden Girls actress a happy birthday as she turned 97 years old, and joked that he had once been in a relationship with the television star, who is more than 50 years his senior. Posting a picture on Instagram of himself and Betty, the 42-year-old actor wrote: “I don’t usually wish ex-girlfriends Happy Birthday. But Betty’s special. With just nine months to run until October’s local body elections, Ashburton’s district councillors will be returning to the debating chamber for the new year, knowing they’ll need to up their game if they want another term around the council table. In December, 2017, one year after the 2016 elections, reporter Sue Newman rated councillors’ performance; today she measures how that’s changed another year down the track.

One year on: Councillors’ report card I

t’s been a tumultuous year for Ashburton District councillors and Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel. They’ve wrapped up their second year running the district, but that doesn’t mean they’ve got it mastered. What it does mean, is that voters have now had two years to see if they’ve got what they voted for, if the candidates they chose have done the job they promised. If they have, well and good, but if not, then those 13 people have less than nine months to win the public over. The year has been marked by debate, discussion, decisions made, decisions overturned and a few decisions made in the past that have returned to bite and

haunt. As councillors have gained confidence, found allies and most have found their feet, there’s been less sniping and stalling, but that may have come at a cost – less debate, discussion and argument – in public, at least. Few seem prepared to publicly say what they think. Why? It hasn’t been an easy year and there are likely to be some around the council table who’re wondering whether it’s been worth the angst. And there will be some who are wondering whether they’ll do it again come October’s local body elections. There were pledges made at election time that may or may not have won seats. The question is, have councillors lived up to those pledges and promises. The acid

test will come in October. Some of those, new to the job in October, 2016, are still finding their feet, other newbies are rising towards the light, but it’s clear the council table is not a team of equals. Some councillors more than earn their paltry pay, while others are probably well paid for their input. Favel is still firmly gripping the reins. She’s had a tough two years. Much of her time has been spent trying to bring newcomers up to speed, helping them find their feet. She’s now cut the apron strings and they’re sinking or swimming according to their own ability. But the show is still Favel’s. She likes to be in control. What appears to be happening increasingly over the past year, is

that more of the heavy discussion and debate is taking place behind closed doors. Yes, there’s the issue of commercial sensitivity and the protection of individuals, but you have to ask, is that being stretched too far? We elect our councillors and mayor to run our district and that means we want more than decisions delivered, we want to know how and why those decisions were made. Watching and listening from the press bench, reporters only see part of the action, usually the done deals. There are three council committee meetings and one council meeting every six weeks. In between there are countless sub-committee meetings and

workshops where all the real work is done. And most often reporters are banned from those. Is that right? Unless there are dollars and cents under discussion, why can’t the business of this district be discussed with the district present. After all it’s our money they’re spending. What happens over the next nine months will decide the fate of those 13 elected members. There’s an odds-on chance councillor numbers will be cut to nine. It will then be imperative we elect the best possible people to those nine seats come October. How have our current crop fared, who’s become a star, whose star has fallen and whose star may never rise?

MAYOR, DONNA FAVEL

I

n her 2016 candidate statement Favel said she stood for transparency, improved communication and more meaningful reporting. She said she believed in a triple bottom line – people, profit and planet, that she was not afraid to seek clarification and to ask questions. She asks more questions and seeks greater clarification on issues than anyone else around the meeting table, so many at times that she seems to be labouring a pointless point – or is it because few of her councillors are asking those questions? She’s a save-theplanet advocate, getting in behind bio-diversity projects and global warming initia-

tives. And yes she’s out there among the people, attending more events than any mayor we’ve had, BUT ... it appears under her watch more business has been conducted in committee, communication has become more controlled and managed, and if reporting has become more meaningful that’s between councillors and staff, not councillors and the community. Favel likes to be liked and she wants to be a mayor who does the right things for her district, but sometimes those two goals are not mutually exclusive. Doing the right thing sometimes means the public – and your councillors – might not like what you say. That’s the price paid for being a leader. She’s a stickler for process (it’s probably her most used word), for minutae, for labouring the point. Not for her decisions on the fly, decisions

according to gut, decisions according to community demand. For her the mayoralty is about doing things in a way she believes is correct. Today she’s a much more confident and assured mayor, one who likes to be in control. She’s an incredibly hard worker and there’s not much she doesn’t attend, not many places she doesn’t go. Over the past two years she’s definitely put in the hard yards in terms of being seen out and about in her patch and she’s now starting to make herself visible nationally. To her credit she never misses an opportunity to push the district’s profile and to grab any chance she can to steer the national spotlight our way. Most mayors since Geoff Geering retired from his long stint at the top have managed two terms; it’s the third attempt that’s been their undoing. Will Favel continue the pattern?

The wise heads: Neil Brown, Stuart Wilson, Russell Ellis, Peter Reveley These four might not always agree, but they’re all motivated by doing what’s best for the district and they’re not afraid to stand up and be counted. Three share a common rural background, even though Brown is now an urban councillor and Wilson has retired, while Ellis is urban through and through.

DEPUTY MAYOR NEIL BROWN

B

rown’s pledge was consistency and reliability. He’s lived up to that in spades. His motivation has always been about getting the best deal for ratepayer dollars and he’ll argue with anyone if he thinks they want to spend money unwisely. He draws on his huge store of knowledge, lines up his facts and has no hesitation in stating his case. If you want to go into public debate with Brown make sure you know what you’re talking about. He does. For a councillor in his fifth term, Brown still has a passion for the district. The big question is will he be tossing his hat in the ring for a sixth? It’s a big call for a man who runs a large-scale dairy farming enterprise. He spends more time off farm than on and given the paltry deputy mayor’s salary, he’s far from rewarded for what he does. The second question mark hanging over Brown is, if he stands again, will he want to be more than the bridesmaid? Will this year be the year he decides to step out of the shadows and make a run for the top job? In his role as deputy mayor Brown might not have the power, but he certainly has the mana.

Between them they have a huge store of knowledge about the district, the council, council projects and how council business should be run around the meeting table. Their knowledge is both deep and broad, they’ll willingly share it when asked and all are adept at cutting through what they might see as frivolous

STUART WILSON SERVICE DELIVERY COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN

W

ilson’s passionate about roading. At the last election he made a commitment to keep pushing for more money in the roading budget and better roads for the district. He’s been absolutely true to that commitment and he’ll fight tooth and nail to push any spare dollars in this direction. He’s never been keen on social spending or the dollars going on items he sees as discretionary. He’s always been about councils sticking with their core business and he’ll argue the toss with anyone who doesn’t agree. Wilson has a huge store of institutional knowledge, he comes to meetings well prepared and expects every other councillor to do likewise. He’s not a time waster and can’t be bothered with trivial debate. He’ll wrap up nine years as a councillor in October and, while he might be the senior statesman in terms of age, he’s sharp as a tack around the meeting table. He hasn’t made his intentions clear on another term; expectations are he’ll be back. In case he decides to call time on his local body career, the current crop of newbies would do well to get alongside him now and tap into his knowledge. If he goes there’ll be a yawning knowledge gap.

PETER REVELEY

CHAIRMAN FINANCE COMMITTEE

E

llis is in his second term. He’s learned from the best and he’s now one of the team’s seniors. He votes as he sees it, he plays no favourites and he’s motivated solely by doing what’s best for the district. He has that rare ability to find a way through a debate that’s become bogged down in conflict. That said, he’s not a man who’ll be chasing the populist vote. Last time around Ellis campaigned on commonsense, on making decisions that were in the best interest of ratepayers – long and short term. And that’s largely what he’s done. When he stood in 2013 it was as a strong advocate for improving traffic flows through Ashburton and for ensuring the second bridge across the Ashburton River was not sited at the end of Chalmers Avenue. He didn’t win that one, but his belief is still the same. If there was a vote for the councillor with the most commonsense, he’d be one of probably only a couple of contenders. Somehow Ellis has managed to run a business and meet all the requirements of being a high contributing councillor. Fingers crossed he’ll stand for a third term. First time around he also stood for mayor, will he stand on that platform again?

eveley has years of experience around the council table, but he’s made it clear this term will be his last. He’s a tenacious and fearless councillor, never afraid to voice an opinion and never afraid to run against the crowd. This term has been his best. He’s contributed more, put more runs on the board and seemed more assured in his role. His departure will leave a huge gap. His independent thoughts and views will be missed and no-one is a better advocate for the rural sector than Reveley. Over his years around the council table he’s followed the same line – putting money into core issues before anything else. Reveley’s a free thinker who tells it like it is and is happy to stand alone rather than sell his soul to the majority.

The rising stars: Selwyn Price, Liz McMillan and Leen Braam These councillors could be the face of the future, it’s just a question of how far they want to go and whether they’re prepared to do the work that’s needed

P

rice has been the second year surprise. He’s moved from being the councillor who chased small details and who appeared to object for the sake of objecting, to become a councillor who gets the bigger picture and who’s not afraid to stand up and be counted – for all the right reasons. He has a strong social conscience, is an environmentalist and is a keen advocate of listening to the community and taking what people are saying into debate. If his fellow councillors don’t agree, he’s happy to be a lone vote on issues. He comes to meetings well prepared, well read and ready to do his bit. He’s looked, listened and learned and it shows. He’s become a dogged debater and is happy to hold his position if he believes he’s right. Pre-election Price said he was committed to talking with the community, face-toface and online and he said the council as an organisation could do better in responding to the views of the community. His frustration is clear when councillors appear to ignore community opinion. Consultation is his mantra, but he wants genuine consultation with a genuine desire to listen. He’s not showing his hand yet on his second-term intentions, but it would be a waste of three years of local body growth if he bowed out now.

LEEN BRAAM

B

raam, watches, waits and chooses his moments. And when he enters a debate it’s clear he’s planned what he’s going to say and he won’t be deterred when it comes to making his point. While he’s not the most vocal of the rising stars, he’s one to watch. Pre-election he said he was committed to learning from the past, moving on and using the knowledge gained to make better decisions in the future. And he’s living up to that. He’ll never let a decision he doesn’t agree with slip by without comment. If that’s not the majority view, Braam doesn’t care, he’ll tell it exactly as he sees it. Over the past two years he and Favel have not always seen eye-to-eye, but he’s proven he doesn’t hold a grudge when something doesn’t go his way. He simply moves on. From the outset Braam was committed to knowing his stuff, knowing what he was talking about and only talking when he had something of value to say. That hasn’t changed. He’s not about sitting around the council to make friends and he has no voting allegiance to any one person. He’s there to get the job done. He’s always well prepared and he’s always prepared to state his case.

M

cMillan had the advantage of coming to council with a few terms around the Methven Community Board table under her belt. She had a head start on other newbies and she’s kept that lead. While she’s unashamedly an advocate for Methven, her council outlook is much broader than that. She does her homework, is happy to voice her opinion and when she does, it’s clear she’s put plenty of thought into an issue. In her pre-election statement she said she would be a grassroots councillor, working to get the best outcome for the community. And she’s remained true to that pledge. She looks at how decisions will affect people. Common-sense and communication were to be her

councillor style and she’s delivered. There’s nothing that goes on in the western ward that escapes her attention and she’s absolutely her constituents’ advocate. McMillan is her own person. She votes as she sees it, not as others might like her to. She comes to council well read, well prepared and with an open mind. She’s a quiet councillor that others would do well not to underestimate. While she might not be the most outspoken of the rising stars, she’s watching, learning and has definitely found her feet.

U

rquhart came to council on the anti-second bridge site ticket. That hasn’t changed. He rarely contributes to public debate or discussion, but you can count on him to vote against spending on anything but the essentials. His election statement included a desire for transparency, communication and commonsense. To be fair, he couldn’t achieve those goals on his own, but he’s never publicly called council to task on any of those issues. Urquhart won’t go near any debate unless he’s in possession of rock-solid facts. He’s a councillor who watches and listens.

in public meetings. For all the public knows they could be outspoken debaters during in-committee discussions we’ll never know. The media can only judge what they see.

DIANE RAWLINSON

R

awlinson is still to make her mark. There’s a sense that there’s plenty of potential below the surface, and perhaps it’s seen during in-committee debate, but in public meetings she’s still a councillor in waiting. To her credit she’s taken with gusto the chairmanship of the council’s town centre redevelopment committee. She’s got a big project in her hands and she’s passionate about it. She must also be frustrated at the slow pace with which change is happening. There’s everything in her background to indicate she could be a solid contributor around the council table, she just needs to lift the lid, to roll her sleeves up and start putting herself in the mix. Maybe this year is Rawlinson’s year to start making vote-winning moves.

MARK MALCOLM

M

alcolm’s often the debating chamber surprise. He’s still an unknown quantity, he’ll sit and listen to debate and occasionally wade in with a wise comment or a pithy remark. He’s the hardest councillor to read in terms of his understanding of issues, his motivation and whether or not he’s enjoying the job. His strength lies in his willingness to say it as he sees it and to vote according to what he sees as right. In his early months he appeared to be swayed by other councillors, now he’s his own person. It’s clear Malcolm works hard in his eastern ward patch and it’s clear he has a pretty good grasp of issues the council is facing, he just needs to up his involvement around the council table.

LYNETTE LOVETT

L

ovett also brought with her a strong background in community organisations and came with an impeccable pedigree for a rural ward councillor. The problem is, she’s as yet, neither shown, nor given a hint of what she’s capable of. There’s a sense that Lovett enjoys the job, but may not have fully read the job description. During the first year she sat, watched and learned. There was an expectation in year two she’d be ready to throw her thoughts and ideas into debates. She hasn’t. She’s still waiting. Is year three her year? Lovett does her homework, clearly understands what’s going on around the council table, but it’s time she started stating her opinion, making her mark. She’s a councillor with plenty of potential, she just needs to become a participant rather than a bystander.

THELMA BELL

B

ell works tirelessly as an advocate for the district’s immigrants and, mayor aside, would probably receive the award for most photographed elected member. When it comes to the debating chamber, however, that’s not her natural home. She struggles to keep up with the flow of a meeting and unfortunately will often ask a question that’s either already been answered or relates to discussion that’s done and dusted. But she does ask questions, more than some other councillors, and full marks for that. And she does have the confidence to vote according to how she sees an issue regardless of support. Bell has gained in confidence but she still has a long distance to travel before she can be regarded as a solid contributor to the business of council.

Beef 2 Quality Mark rib eye steaks on the bone (approximately 500g each) Smashed potatoes 600-800g small potatoes, scrubbed 3T olive oil 2 cloves garlic, crushed 2T finely chopped rosemary leaves Herb sauce 2 handfuls basil leaves 1 small handful flat-leaf Parsley leaves 1 clove garlic, crushed 1T lemon juice 3/4 C olive oil To serve Crisp green salad ■ Preheat the oven to 210°C. Place a shallow roasting tray in the oven to heat. Line a second shallow roasting tray with baking paper. ■ Beef: Heat a barbecue grill plate until hot. Rub beef with a little oil and season. ■ Place on the hot grill and barbecue for eight minutes. Transfer to the hot tray and place in the oven for a further 17 minutes. Remove from the oven and place beef on a

warmed plate, cover loosely with foil and a clean tea towel. Leave to rest in a warm place for 15 minutes or more. ■ Smashed potatoes: Parboil the potatoes in lightly salted boiling water for 10 minutes. Drain. Place potatoes on the baking paper-lined tray and crush lightly with a potato masher (you want to break the skin). Drizzle with the oil and season. Place in the oven and roast for 15 minutes, then remove and sprinkle over the garlic and rosemary. Return to the oven and roast for a further 10 minutes until crisp and golden. ■ Herb sauce: Place the herbs and garlic in a food processor and season. Process until the herbs are well chopped. Add the lemon juice, drizzle in the olive oil and process until well combined. Place the sauce in a small bowl, cover well with plastic wrap and place in the fridge. ■ To serve: Serve beef with the smashed potatoes, the herb sauce and a crisp green salad. But you can see where some of it is going … and you can comment on the address of that wallet.” Social media feeds show people who have lost money in the Cryptopia theft begging for their money back and wanting to know which currencies are affected, said Pentney. He says Cryptopia wasn’t large enough for the hack to have a substantial effect on the broader market for cryptocurrencies, but the exchange provided support for a number of niche cryptocurrencies, which could struggle to trade, particularly if Cryptopia held a large portion of those assets. Other implications of the hack would depend on whether the funds were permanently lost or whether Cryptopia bounced back and was in a position to refund

customers, Pentney says. However, even reimbursement could be tricky, as cryptocurrency prices may have fluctuated since the time of the hack. “In some ways this is a more complicated situation than previous high-profile exchange hacks, as there are indications dozens of different cryptocurrencies may be involved. This makes the tracking and reimbursement process more difficult.” New Zealanders who lost money permanently through the theft might be able to apply for tax relief, Pentney says. The world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange says it has frozen some funds from hacked Christchurch digital assets exchange Cryptopia. New Zealand police were called into Cryptopia late on Monday night to investigate the theft of several million dollars-worth of cryptocurrencies and have done a scene examination and a forensic digital investigation. It’s not clear exactly what happened, but the cryptocurrency exchange went into maintenance on Monday night, followed by an automated alert that showed a digital “wallet” receiving more than $NZ3 million from Cryptopia. Since then it’s been possible to see some transactions involving that wallet, including money going to the giant international cryptocurrency exchange Binance. Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao said on Twitter on Thursday that the hackers appeared to have sent his company some of the stolen funds from Cryptopia, and Binance had frozen them. “I don’t understand why the hackers keep sending to Binance,” Zhao, known as CZ, said. “Social media will be pretty fast to report it and we will freeze it. It’s a highrisk manoeuvre for them.” Bell Gully senior associate Campbell Pentney is a tax specialist with expertise in cryptocurrencies. He says he was not personally affected by the theft, but like many around the world has been watching the digital wallet money is thought to be in. “You can follow transactions involving that wallet because the

Mortgage brokers say a new sub-4 per cent mortgage rate launched by a major bank could be the start of another mortgage war. From yesterday Westpac is offering a one-year fixed term rate of 3.99 per cent – down 16 basis points on its standard rate of 4.15 per cent. The offer is only available until February 1 and is only open to those with more than 20 per cent equity and a have their salary going into a transactional account at the bank. Karen Tatterson, a mortgage broker with loan market, expected other banks to follow. “I think they probably will. I think they will probably be inclined to match it.” She said she was also able to get 3.99 per cent from Kiwibank over one year, an offer that had been available since before Christmas. John Bolton, managing director of Squirrel Mortgages, said he had been surprised to see the Westpac rate but also expected other banks to match it.

In praise of older drivers A

sk any old, really old person what they see as one of the key ingredients in keeping their independence and they’re likely to tell you it’s being able to drive. They mightn’t go far behind the wheel and they mightn’t leave home all that often, but the simple act of being able to decide when you go to the supermarket or out visiting, when you go to meetings or church, that’s the thread that keeps many oldies in touch with life outside their four walls. A 97-year-old Prince Philip is still behind the wheel but this week he crashed, flipped his vehicle and walked away dazed, bleeding but unharmed and that’s got half the world talking about oldies behind the wheel.

Ashburton has its fair share of aged drivers, many of them pretty good drivers, but there’s no definition of what constitutes age behind the wheel. There’s no defining point that says how old is too old. Ultimately who drives and who does not all comes down to those drivers passing their medical and passing a driving test as required. Many continue to pass both year after year, ensuring they retain their independence.

Some of those drivers are well into their 90s, one’s over 100. And good on them. It’s easy to question the safety of a driver over the age of perhaps 90, but are those drivers any less safe than a 17-year-old? Yes their reaction times are likely to be slower, but so is their driving speed. The reverse could be applied to youth drivers – reaction times may be quicker, but those reactions may be wrong because of their inexperience, and when it comes to speed, there’s more likely to be too much of it rather than too little. For an older driver, knowing a driving test is coming up could be the thing that keeps them mentally active. It gives them a goal, something

to work towards and that has to be good in anyone’s books. The renewal rules are clear and are designed to ensure only those who are fit to drive continue to drive after the age of 75. There is no upper limit. Meet the criteria and you’re good to go. Statistics show that older drivers are involved in fewer crashes than other age groups because they tend to drive conservatively, travel fewer kilometres and restrict their driving to times and situations in which they feel safe. The natural caution of age means they’re likely to be their own best monitor of what they can and cannot do. Yes it’s frustrating when you’re following a slow driver, when you’re waiting at a roundabout or

intersection for someone who’s clearly aged to get their wheels rolling, but are they any less safe behind the wheel just because they’re a bit slower? Perhaps the problem lies in the impatience of younger drivers who believe that every second they wait is a second wasted. It’s easy to condemn those older drivers, to say they should be off the road, but God willing, each of us will get there one day. If we’re still physically able and the lights are still on upstairs, we’ll be lining up every two years at our GP’s door for a medical and then perhaps to take a driving test that will retain or remove our independence. It’s a simple equation. Pass and you’re good to go. Fail and you turn in your ticket.

adly, the New Year has begun much as the old one ended. Watch any television news this month and you will have been informed of the fatal consequences of a never-ending succession of country-wide traffic accidents, most of them caused, as ever, by excessive speed and mad consumption of alcohol. Despite the best efforts of police and other agencies, the carnage on our roads continues unabated. “When will they ever learn?” as a famous popular song once asked. Elsewhere, lethally-flawed drugs seem to be changing hands regularly, often with disastrous results, while a series of home invasions of elderly citizens has led to them being roughed up and items stolen. (By “old people”, I refer to those in their eighties which, in my book, are not the “new seventies” or any other such age.) By any standard, they are old, defenceless and often in poor health. That they are frequently attacked in their homes of many years says little for the attitude of some Kiwis to their fellow citizens. Even the dreadful Trump would call such incidents “disgraceful” and, for once, he would be right. They are. Meanwhile, “casual” murders, often caused by brazen stabbings in the street or by other equally devastating methods, are haphazard, rampant and on the up. The death of the English tourist, Grace Millane, is a case in point. As the PM said, “it should not have happened in New Zealand”; to which I would add, “or anywhere else”. The usual crop of holiday drownings has been fully reported, while the incidence of arson, especially involving much-loved buildings, such as churches, still the centres of many communities, has been frightening. Readers can make their own additions to the list of mostly self-inflicted tragedies in Aoteara, New Zealand, suffered in the first three weeks of 2019. While the nation seems to be enveloped in a shroud of self-destruction, the news from overseas appears no less depressing. The Brexit imbroglio con-

Despite the best efforts of police and other agencies, the carnage on our roads continues unabated. tinues; it is obvious there is no “magic bullet” with which Theresa May can either extricate herself from the unenviable position in which she now finds herself or, in a matter of hours, we are told, offer the nation an alternative plan any more likely than any other to bring a resolution to this insoluble impasse. The fact is only another referendum is likely to reverse the issue as the consequences of the first have now been fully realised by many of the original EU “leavers”, who may not have appreciated exactly what they were voting for but having witnessed the difficulties of the two years since that catastrophic vote might now be keen to switch sides and “Stay”. However, as long as May remains at No 10, there seems to be little likelihood of that. Despite being one of the original “Stayers”, the PM feels strongly she must abide by the will of the people who voted, by a mere four per cent majority, to leave, thus obliging her to find the best deal for the United Kingdom to do so, whatever her personal feelings about the matter. May is therefore proving to be a respected diehard supporter of democracy and anxious to do

her level best to accommodate the expressed wishes of the voters. Thus, she persists, resolutely, in the search for such a solution. Her own party is badly divided as are the opposition, so stalemate is inevitable. It is beginning to look as if on March 29 Britain will officially leave the European Union with nothing to replace it. Such an event will have significant ramifications around the world, not least here in New Zealand where separate trade and other agreements will have to be painstakingly negotiated. It is not a pretty prospect. There is even said to be a “rogue family” cutting a swathe through the North Island, stealing, littering and swearing as it goes. It is led, apparently, by a small boy with lurid, expletive-loaded language and hand signals to match. One of his favourite expressions, “I’ll knock your brains out”. And as if all that were not enough to give the world-atlarge a severe migraine, there’s Trump. Reckless, bombastic and hell-bent on turning himself into a long-stay dictator, he remains a considerable threat to the way in which the world and, in particu-

lar, the United States of America works. Economies, international trade and business are all under threat, and ever-present on “the button”, his small, but itchy finger. So I regret having to begin my 2019 offerings on such a sombre – some might say, depressing – note but, as I’m sure you will agree, facts must be faced and suitable action taken. Last year was yet another record year for deaths on our roads, three hundred and eighty in all. The tragic repercussions of such events are life-changing but almost all avoidable. Surely, we can, at the very least, bring down the number of such fatalities in 2019. Despite all the gloom and doom above – which I feel bound to put before you – I wish all the wise readers of the Ashburton Guardian the happiest of New Years! Prepare for that return to school The long, long summer holidays are just about over for thousands of Mid Canterbury children. For those families after weeks of days without routine, during the last week of January routine will become the norm. A return to school doesn’t just happen without plenty of planning on the home front. Whether children are heading to secondary school, boarding school, primary or intermediate, or whether they’re entering the classroom for the first time, good planning and being prepared makes the whole experience so much easier for everyone. The start of the school year is not always an easy time for students. Many will be anxious about their first days in a new school or a new classroom but opportunities to talk about the new year where they can air any concerns they have will make the transition a little easier. How well they make the transition from one stage to the next is made a whole lot easier with mum, dad and their extended family on side and involved. v If they’re new to school a visit to the school grounds over the holidays

might help them feel comfortable with their new surroundings. If they’re taking a new route to school, then walking, scooting or cycling in the days before school starts is a good idea.

Lunchboxes Packing a tasty, nutritious lunch with sufficient food for snacks during the day is important, but unfortunately there’s no guarantee your child will eat the lunch you’ve spent precious morning minutes preparing. A healthy lunchbox should include a mix of fruit, vegetables, whole grains (such as wholegrain bread, crackers or cereals), dairy products (such as cheese and yogurt) and protein (such as nuts, seeds, eggs, meat and fish). Limit treats such as chips and chocolate biscuits. Getting your child to help pack their lunchbox could be one way to ensure they’ll eat it and don’t pack food items that are complicated or messy to eat. At school, most kids like food that is quick to eat. And remember kids need to keep hydrated so don’t forget their water bottle.

The easiest way to learn

Stationery Unless the school provides stationery, you’ll probably have a stationery list from your child’s school. Most stationery shops have deals on at this time of year so it pays to shop around. Covering and labelling your child’s books can be really time consuming – don’t leave it till the night before. Look online for ideas such as wrapping the books in plain paper and getting your child to decorate – this can be cheaper and a lot more fun than buying sticky covering.

Uniform A return to school also puts a strain on family finances. Uniforms are expensive but you need to have every item ticked off to ensure your child starts the school year kitted out appropriately. Check if your school has a secondhand uniform shop, look at local Facebook pages and most schools have second-hand uniform shops that open up a week or two before school returns. The garments in these are generally in excellent condition and they’re

a great option for saving money on clothing a child will grow out of. If you’re on a benefit or low income, you may be eligible for assistance from Work and Income for the costs of school uniforms and stationery. Make sure you’ve labelled your child’s lunchbox, drink bottle, sunhat and any clothing likely to be taken off during the day.

Supporting your child It’s important your child knows they’re not in the school system on their own, that there is plenty of support and encouragement at home. This can make a huge difference to their progress. As the year progresses it’s important to be involved with school events too, to talk to their teachers and to raise issues if you have concerns about how your child is working in the classroom and interacting with other children in the playground Keeping children engaged in education is vital for their success at school and later in life and for parents it is important to ensure your child is attending school regularly.

Bond wants BBL review Rachel Reid is preparing to take on the Coast to Coast multisport race for the first time. BY ERIN TASKER

Rachel Reid has a time in her head that she’d like to see next to her name after she crossed the finish line at next month’s Coast to Coast. But really, the time doesn’t matter that much to her. Her main goal was simply to finish the two-day individual section of the iconic multisport race, and hopefully make it to the finish line before the first of the one-day individual competitors. Another big bonus would be if she could finish the kayak leg in a quicker time than husband Chris. The couple are both first-time entrants, but with three kids at home to work around as well as jobs and family-life in general, they’d had few opportunities to train together. They are unlikely to see much of each other come race weekend, either. Rachel said Chris was faster, but she hoped she might have a bit of an edge in the kayak leg and maybe finish that faster than him. But for both of them, it isn’t about who beat who, or what time they finished in.

It was simply about finishing. For the Reids, their Coast to Coast journey so far had had to fit in to their already busy lives. Chris – a joiner – gets up early to train in the mornings, and Rachel – a preschool teacher – trains at night. When you’re a husband and wife duo – and parents – both preparing for your first Coast to Coast you need to be organised, and you need a lot of family support. Rachel said she and Chris were lucky that they’d had a huge amount of family support, and without that, they wouldn’t have been able to do what they are about to do. “The other bonus is we both know what it’s like. “We both know how much effort we both have to put in, so I know if he’s going out for a three or four hour training session, I know that’s what’s required,” Rachel said. When you were both doing the same thing, you understood what the other person had to do, and why, and it also helped to motivate you. Rachel first thought about doing the Coast to Coast a few years ago, but it wasn’t until last year’s

event – where Chris was support crew for a friend – that those thoughts returned. She has never been on a road bike or in a kayak before, and although she has done a bit of running, she has not done a lot of trail running, and certainly nothing to the extent of what she will find herself doing come February 8. “There’s nothing like throwing yourself in the deep end. “I’ll either sink or swim,” Rachel said. She initially thought the kayak leg would be the one that would cause her the most anxiety, but as the days until race weekend tick away, it is actually the biking that she is the most worried about now. She has done a lot of racing with the Tinwald Cycling Club in order to learn how to bunch ride because she was nervous she might find herself in a bunch with people who didn’t know how to bunch ride. All she could really control, was her own performance. “I’m not going to do it to beat any time, I’m doing it for myself. “I just want to complete it,” Rachel said. “At the end of the day as long

as I know that I’m putting 100 per cent into it, that’s what I’m excited about.” While a lot of people enlisted the help of trainers, or special training programmes to help prepare them for the race, the Reids haven’t. Rachel said she has followed a plan on the Coast to Coast website, with a few alterations to fit around life. Between them, the three Reid children had something on just about every day after school, and Rachel said that they really hadn’t wanted their kids missing out on anything just because mum and dad had decided to enter a race. When the couple crossed the finish line after a gruelling couple of days, their kids will be there. Leah is likely to be there waiting, while James is keen to run the last little bit of the race with Chris, and the youngest, Thomas, is hoping to cross the finish line with Rachel. And those moments were likely to be special, and ones that they may get to experience again one day. “I’d love to do the two-day again, but in saying that, I haven’t done this one yet,” Rachel said.

There will be a distinct Mid Canterbury flavour when shooters take to the range at Trentham for the New Zealand National Rifle Shooting Championships, and the Long Range World Championships on January 25 to February 10. Making up a large contingent of shooters from the region is the Snowden family, who will all be playing a part at the event. John Snowden will be representing New Zealand at the world championships in the open side, and will look to become the first person to defend the Ballinger Belt as winner of the national championships.

His daughter Megan will be competing in her third national championships, and will compete in the New Zealand under-21 team, while mum Coby will shoot in the national championships and play a part in running the world championships as secretary of the national rifle association. “It is going to be a huge event,” Coby Snowden said. “In some ways it is bigger for us than the Commonwealth games as it includes countries from all over the world (not just the Commonwealth).” The world championships are held every four years, with New Zealand last holding the event in 1995.

Snowden said they expect there to be around 450 shooters competing. For Megan who has only been shooting for three years, the stepup to international shooting is one she is looking forward to. “I’m really pumped to be there,” she said. “I will try and do everything the same but with the world championship match there is going to be hundreds of new people there, so that will be different. “I will be treating both events equally, the world champs match actually comes before the nationals so I haven’t been training for it specifically. “I am just hoping to help the team succeed and then look at

nats as a way to improve my personal shooting.” Competition is expected to be stiff, with Great Britain the ones to watch, while America and Australia also have top shooters. “It is our home range in theory but it is always going to be tough and conditions like the wind and whether you are focused in to the day or not,” Coby Snowden said. Bumper clash on the pitch With a highlight reel boasting more moments than most good television shows, the final round of last year’s Pritchard Shield cricket competition here in Mid Canterbury was a boomer when Tech Stags and Coldstream locked horns. In a game where the winner was going to walk away with the major piece of silverware locally, it ebbed and flowed before Tech asserted their dominance as the early-season top club in senior cricket with a 64-run victory. Youngsters bring home the silverware The Ashburton Athletics Club have had a successful trip south to the Colgate Games, coming back with more medals and pennants than athletes.

The club sent 20 athletes south to Dunedin for the annual threeday event last weekend, which was held at the Caledonian ground.

Toby Grant and Gretchen Ross were the two most successful athletes, with Grant winning a gold medal in discus, 100m, shot put and a silver in the 200m,

while Ross won a gold pennant in the 60m, 100m, 200m, discus, long jump and was part of the gold pennant wining eight year old relay.

Ashleigh Barty has survived an injury scare and a spirited challenge from opponent Maria Sakkari to scrap her way into the Australian Open fourth round for the first time. Australia’s big title hope needed a medical timeout after the first set to treat an apparent abdominal strain but returned to complete a hardfought 7-5 6-1 third-round win over the tough Greek. Barty thundered down 13 aces and dropped serve just once, but looked ginger at times with her movement, no doubt the result of a gruelling workload of eight matches in the past 12 days. “The lively conditions suit both of us so it took time to get used to how dead and slow it is in here with the roof closed,” Barty said. - AAP

The thwack of a ball on racquets returned to the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre on Thursday night, with the resumption of sunset doubles signalling the start of the 2019 tennis year. “Last night was packed and it was a good feeling seeing everybody back out there playing,” Mid Canterbury tennis coach Andre van Rooyen said yesterday. “We had a good holiday but it is good to get back started again.” It was a good start in the division one of the sunset doubles for the Lakers, who comfortably accounted for the Ball Wackers 6-0, while all the other games finished 4-2 in favour of Heineken Openers, Croziers Turkeys and Cates Grain and Seeds. Mid Canterbury Tennis will also be hosting a summer tennis camp next week for children aged between four and 16. Exodus to Perth continues Exciting three-year-old filly Arma Indie has been snapped up by clients of big-spending Perth trainer Mike Reed. Co-trainer David Butt confirmed she left Southland yesterday destined for Auckland, from which she would fly to Melbourne next week and then on to Perth. Parsons stable divided Balcairn trainers John and Karen Parsons have a three-pronged attack in today’s Listed Liquorland Gore Guineas (1335m), but key members of the stable cannot agree as to which of the trio is their leading hope. While the unbeaten Jamie Richards trained runner Weaponry dominates the market as a $2 favourite, the Parsons representatives Fire Show ($7.50), Superstatic ($15) and Final Savings ($17) are all rated a strong eachway chance by TAB bookmakers. “Everyone in the stable has got a different pick,” Karen Parsons said. “Chris (Johnson) has got one, Gos (Gosen Jagoo) has got one and I’ve got one.” Fire Show hasn’t raced since finishing fourth to The Chosen One in the Listed Zacinto Stakes (1600m) in October and had previously been stakes-placed behind smart filly Xpression. “He had a few issues, so we didn’t push on to the New Zealand Guineas. “Everything went wrong, so we’ve come again fresh now and he is very forward. “But we’ve got a horror draw

Long road for Vile duo Awapuni gallopers Jacksstar and Rock On have been on the road to recovery after tendon issues in the last couple of years and trainer Gary Vile is hoping his patience with the pair pays off at Trentham today. The stablemates will line-up in the Gr.3 NZ Campus of Innovation & Sport Wellington Cup (3200m) and Vile said it has been a long process getting both runners back to their best. - NZME

We would like to thank everyone who took the time to visit Mum over the past 18 months after she became too unwell to remain in her own home, especially her brothers, sisters and their partners who were regulars. She always enjoyed catching up on the family news and kept us all informed of the goings on in the extended family. Our thanks to the staff at Radius Millstream for the care given to Mum while she was one of their residents. Having been a carer herself it was good for us to know that she was well looked after. Also thank you to Drs Penny Holdaway and Malcolm Wootton for their care and respect of Mum over the past few years. We wish to acknowledge the many expressions of sympathy and gestures of kindness to our family and to thank everyone who came to Mum’s funeral, burial and to the celebration at the Hotel Ashburton afterwards: it was important to her that everyone got to have a good catch up and a laugh! Lastly our thanks to Paterson’s Funeral Services for their guidance and to Bernard Egan for making Mum’s funeral about her. Please accept this as a personal thank you from Carolyn’s seven children and their families.
