The Ashburton mayoralty will be a fourcandidate race in the October local body elections, with sitting mayor Donna Favel facing challenges from two of her team and from one outsider. Along with Favel, long serving councillor Neil Brown, one-term councillor Leen Braam and a past member and chair of the Ashburton Trust Tony Todd are chasing the chance to become the district’s mayor. Favel is seeking a second term in the mayoral chair after defeating two-term mayor Angus McKay in 2016. She had already served two terms as a district councillor in the urban ward before winning the mayoralty. Brown will have completed five terms as a district councillor, four of those in the western ward, with the current term for the urban ward. He is also deputy mayor. Braam was elected to the council’s urban ward at the last election and chairs the Chinese Village working group. Todd was for many years a member of the Ashburton Trust, serving as its chair for his last two terms. If you’re on your way past the Ashburton Trust Event Centre this week, keep an ear out for the hard-working vocal chords of 149 Mid Canterbury Summer Singing School (MCSSS) students. The group launched into a week of practice yesterday before they bring a musical theatre production to the stage on Friday and Saturday. It’s the biggest production yet for the MCSSS, which has been operating each January for 18 years and is musically helmed by Ashburton singing tutor Jo Castelow. “We now have people from all over, from as far as Timaru and Christchurch, and each time brings a new mix of voices,” said Castelow. Some singers have been involved in the week-long course for more than 10 years, she said,

This year’s production is themed Time Travellers and will cover musical theatre and tunes from across the ages – from My Fair Lady and Bing Crosby to recent hits like Hamilton and Moana, along with everything in between, Castelow said. “Among the juniors everyone knows the songs from Moana, but they find that they love singing the older ones just as much,” she said. And not only does the theme provide something for everyone in the audience, she said, but gives the young singers the opportunity to learn about various musicals. The group received their music a month ago, and auditioned for solo positions on Sunday. They are currently un undergoing two days of musical

She will have to win a second term on October 12 to have an opportunity to try to break the three-term bogey in 2021. Ballot papers will arrive in mailboxes around the district from September 20, with postal voting closing at noon on October 12. A by-election will now need to be held early next year. Ten candidates are chasing five seats in the Ashburton District Council’s urban ward, four candidates for two seats in the eastern ward and three candidates in the western ward.

A number of older buildings around the Ashburton District will shortly be sporting signs that spell out how they rank against new building standards. As part of the on-going drive to ensure all buildings will be earthquake safe, the Ashburton District Council will be sending signs to owners of buildings built prior to 1976 and will be asking them to display those signs prominently on the outside of their property. The public notification is part of the council’s drive to ensure every older building has been inspected by engineers and that where required, strengthen-

ing work is either carried out or planned in the future. It’s been a long process getting to this point, council building services manager Michael Wong said, but the placard templates had now arrived and these would be sent to property owners over the next month. The placards would serve a two fold purpose – making the public aware of a building’s compliance level and encouraging owners to carry out necessary strengthening work. Prior to becoming mayor Favel said she was asked to describe her leadership style and she had responded that sometimes she led from the front, at other times from beside and occasionally from behind. Looking back, she said she had done all three and had also tried for a collaborative approach, The mayor’s job, Favel said was in equal parts – chairman of the board, advocate for the community and cheerleader for the district. While taking out the bins yesterday morning, she said she noticed that the security camera had been taken and the padlock had been cut off from her honesty box. All money had been cleared from the box before the theft, but Raisbeck said she was still gutted to discover the break-in, which she presumes is the work of people “who don’t care about other people”. Te Araroa walkers are on the rise, benefiting the summer tourism industry in Methven. Many who do the 3000-kilometre trail, which runs the length of New Zealand, end up in the ski town, as it is a natural resting point near the uncrossable Rakaia River. Methven i-SITE consultant Lyndsay Agnew said December to February was peak season for trail walkers, and she was assisting about half a dozen per week. “Most of them are doing the whole trail or the whole South Island, depending on how much time they have got,” she said. “They are really interesting people, you have to be a certain breed to want to go and walk 3000 kilometres.” They mostly came from Europe and North America, and walked north to south, hitch-hiking into Methven from above Lake Coleridge. They generally stayed in the campground or backpacker lodges in Methven. “It’s nice to have them here and they spread the word when they go back,” she said. Walkers rejoin the trail on Blackford Road in the Rakaia Gorge, and Methven Travel provides transport on the “empty” section of its school bus run, and operates an on-demand shuttle service in school holidays. The Te Araroa section through Mid Canterbury goes from here to the Hakatere Heron Road, taking a public access easement over Glenariffe Station, then crossing the 60,000-hectare Hakatere Conservation Park. Among those undertaking Te Araroa is American Clayton Beckett. His trail name is Chef, he has a travel blog at chefspecial5.com and is from Connecticut. The 26-year-old is walking the South Island section, south to north, and was in Methven at the weekend. He said he ended up staying two nights instead of one at Snow Denn Lodge because he needed the rest, and the fact it of-

He flew into Auckland in midDecember, and had his cellphone stolen in his first two days. He flew to Queenstown and shuttled to the southern end of Te Araroa at Bluff, and walked 555 kilometres north to Twizel over the next fortnight, staying in high country huts and his tent. With last week’s storm system forecast he decided to skip the next section and he

hitchhiked to Methven, and left at the weekend aiming to hitch to north of Lake Coleridge to resume the trail. Beckett said the trail to date had had many river crossings, and some mountainous terrain, as well as farm tracks and dirt roads. Besides the road walks, which he did not like as they lacked the wilderness appeal of true trail walking, and a lack of markers in some areas, he was enjoying the scenery and meeting lots of people. Of the few fellow hikers he had met, most were walking north to

south. “A lot of Kiwis don’t even know about the trail,” Beckett said. He was not worried about being without a cellphone. “If you don’t have service it’s not going to help you and you are not going to get that in the mountains,” he said. He was confident enough from previous trail walking in Chile and America not to worry about an emergency locator beacon. In the 12 months to July last year, 550 people walked the full length from Cape Reinga to Bluff,

Bold plan for new look domain By Sue Newman

A radical revamp and redesign of Ashburton’s Domain is planned to create a greenspace that will meet the recreational needs of the district for the next 30 years. The Ashburton District Council decided work was needed to ensure the domain remained the district’s crown jewel and that it could meet the community’s changing needs. Four key values were seen as people, recreation, plants and heritage, and long term goals were seen as celebrating the domain’s water way, creating a cohesive play environment, strengthening connections and establishing a new hub focal point. When it came to creating a new look domain the key themes were seen as nature, learning through play, heritage and diversity and a 30 year plan with a $10 million implementation price tag, was developed. The new look domain will eventually be divided into five precincts – gardens, sports, play, promenade and events, but in creating those, some traditional domain users and activities may find themselves looking for new homes or finding those homes in other parts of the domain. The most significant change is likely to be for the domain’s bowling club. For around 140 years the Ashburton Bowling Club has played on greens in an area of the domain near West Street and alongside the domain aviary. In the new plan bowls would find a new home in the old camping ground area currently accessed from Grigg Street – or in greenfields space at the EA Networks Centre. One of the key features of the redesigned domain will be new pedestrian pathways to improve circulation patterns and to provide better links into the central business area. A promenade will be developed along the domain’s Walnut Avenue edge. A new activity hub is planned and it will be a starting point for people visiting the domain for information, refreshments, dining and a space for community activities, education and display. The hub is likely to be centred on the area currently used as bowling greens. The existing playground will be retained but play equipment wil be given a more themed appearance and a natural and botanical theme is proposed that suits the garden theme. A water play area will be developed to replace the existing paddling pool and play and picnic areas will be developed in that area. Entry into the domain may change with the redevelopment, possibly to a left turn

only into the area from West Street with a new central access proposed off Walnut Avenue. Included in the plan is a major revamp of the parks department work base, possibly away from the domain base. There are 25 projects included in the plan, with work on these starting in the current financial year with completion not until 2048. The majority of money, $6.9 million, will be spent between 2028 and 2038 and the only project that has not been assigned a likely cost is the relocation of the bowling club. The draft redevelopment plan was received by the council on Thursday and if adopted by the new council after the October 12 local body elections, will go out for community consultation early next year. The domain was first laid out in 1864 and covered approximately 100 acares. In 1874 a domain board was established to adminsiter the land and areas were leased to early settlers for stock grazing. Income from this was used to plant trees and erect fences.

There are some bold plans in place for the future of the Ashburton Domain.

Mid Canterbury farmers affected by mycoplasma bovis have been paid out more than $22 million in compensation, but there is still plenty of work left to tackle the disease on the ground in the district. A total of 211 compensation claims have been lodged with the Ministry of Primary Industries from the Mid Canterbury district, Geoff Gwyn, M. bovis programme director, said. One hundred and seventy-seven of those have been settled for the value of $22.8 million. Gwyn said his big focus for MPI’s response to the M. bovis outbreak was making decisions at a regional level to drive local solutions for local people. Currently there have been 26 confirmed cases in the district, 24 of which have been cleared. There are two that are currently considered active, while 25 farms are currently under a notice of direction. If a farm is placed under notice of direction, it means there’s a high risk that cattle on the farm may be infected with M. bovis. A further 72 farms are currently under active surveillance, which Gwyn said were more than likely to not have the disease, and that they were following a process of due diligence to ensure they were not. Gwyn said MPI is currently in the process of rolling out a new website

based around dealing with M. bovis that will include video accounts from farmers who have gone through the eradication process. It was agreed that a local one should also be produced, and it will be a combined effort between MPI and the Ashburton District Council. Gwyn said there was no time-frame yet, but he expected it would not take long to be produced. Beef + Lamb and Dairy New Zealand have been working together to produce workshops to assist farmers with biosecurity, said Dairy NZ South Island head Tony Finch. “If there is any silver lining that can be taken out of the mycoplasma bovis cloud, it is there will be an improvement in biosecurity and governance or response and improve those things for the future,” he said. Northern South Island regional manager Charlotte Austin has been dealing more directly with local farmers, and said if there is anything to be learnt from the M. bovis outbreak it would be to strictly adhere to the Nait and biosecurity demands. “If there was one thing I could get tattooed on my forehead to remind farmers to do, it would be NAIT (national animal identification tracing),” she said. Austin said the lessons learned from this outbreak would be incredibly helpful when it came to dealing with issues like this in the future.

Long fire service recognised D

ave O’Donnell has a motto, one which he keeps under his belt and in the back of his mind every time his pager goes. “Keep calm, don’t panic. The incident will still be there when you get there,” O’Donnell said. It is a motto which has stood the Ashburton grandfather in good stead throughout his more than 25 years as a rural firefighter. His long career is to be recognised tonight when he is presented with the 25-year gold star at a ceremony at the Lake House at Lake Hood. It all began back in 1992, when he joined the Mt Somers rural fire unit. About three years later he and his family moved to Mayfield, so he joined the rural fire unit there and became its deputy chief fire officer. He was also appointed rural fire officer for the Ashburton District, a role which tied in well with his career as he already worked at the Ashburton District Council as a water ranger. It put him at the upper level of fire management in the district, directly under principal rural fire officer Jim Mitchell, then Don Geddes, and deputy rural fire officer Terry O’Neill. From about 2005 onwards he was on call as the acting deputy principal rural fire officer, keeping this role up until the amalgamation that formed FENZ in 2017. As rural fire officer he worked with all the units in the district, and at the operations and administration level for many of the larger fires to which multiple brigades were called to. Among these was the Mt Somers riverbed fire of 2004, one of Mid Canterbury’s largest vegetation fires in recent history. Almost a dozen families had to be evacuated in the blaze in nor’wester conditions on a hot January day, in what many firefighters called the summer from hell. At its peak, more than 150 firefighters and other personnel were involved. They were assisted by two fixed wing aircraft and a fleet of helicopters as they

battled the blaze on both sides of the Ashburton south branch riverbed. O’Donnell had an involvement in this blaze right from the start, as he was the one who noticed it and called it in to emergency services. In his water ranger role he had been working with a farmer on installing a siphon in the Ran-

gitata Diversion Race in the Mt Somers area. “We saw the smoke in the distance, there was a total fire ban on at the time and we knew if anyone had smoke we had to send someone to it,” he said. From his truck he phoned straight through to the fire emergency communications centre, and then drove to Mt Somers.

Once there he noticed that inadvertently Mt Somers had not been called out, but Methven was on the way instead. He phoned back through to comms to make sure they got Mt Somers onto the job, and went straight to the fire, to find farmers first on the scene doing their best to dampen flames with bags and shovels. “By that time it was beyond Mt

Somers,” O’Donnell said. All the district’s units were required for the blaze, and ultimately one of the country’s newly-formed national incident management teams were called in, representing the first time they had been launched into service in Mid Canterbury. It was a hot blustery Monday afternoon, and O’Donnell’s day on the job fighting the fire and helping oversee the response extended into many days as he remained on site for 107 hours straight. “The start of the Mt Somers fire shows how critical things are, that’s why there’s a lot of rural units in the district, if one gets there before the main team, they can make such a difference,” he said. The Mt Somers fire was among a number of large vegetation fires O’Donnell has been involved in over the years. Added to that there has been an increasing number of medical call-outs and motor vehicle accidents, due to the district’s growing population. In his water ranger role, O’Donnell worked in the Pendarves area and since about 2004 he has been with the Pendarves rural fire unit. He said belonging to a rural fire unit is like belonging to a large family, and he has thrived in the camaraderie the role offers, as well as continuously improving his skills through the training offered. At the age of 69, O’Donnell has no plans to retire, and thinks he has many good years service left in him yet. He is grateful to wife Sheral for her support over the years. “Most incoming calls are usually when you are busy working, or relaxing, or lighting the barbecue. You do this for the community, and when there’s a fire the community comes first.” He wants to see new members come on board to rural brigades, ensuring the strong tradition of volunteer fire fighting continues for generations to come. “What I say to others is join the team, test your boundaries, and make life-long friends.”

Finding ways to reduce alcohol-related crime and tackling illegal behaviour in and around bars was the main focus of the Ashburton Alcohol Accord meeting on Thursday. The group, made up of licensed premises in the Ashburton District, meet every two months and often have a guest speaker, who for this meeting was the Health Promotion Agency’s principal adviser for drinking environments, Mark Lyne. Lyne said his main role was working with licensed premises to reduce alcohol-related harm. “We covered topics like how designs and layouts of bars and bottle stores can reduce the risk of crime and disorder,” he said. “We also talked about how to keep bars drug free, whether that is people taking drugs before coming to a bar, taking drugs at a bar, or the worst would be dealing drugs at a bar.” Lyne said it was clear most of the drug use involving bars in Ashburton was people consuming drugs before heading to a bar. “It is more in a way replacing pre-loading with alcohol before

heading to a bar,” he said. The topic of drink spiking is one that is also becoming more prevalent nationwide, said Lyne, but less so in the Ashburton district. There are two types of drink spiking, where alcohol is poured into a non-alcoholic drink or alcoholic drink to increase the alcohol content, which is the more common type of drink spiking that happens in the district. Lyne said the other type of drink spiking that can occur is through adding date-rape drugs to drink, which is less common here. Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drug Service general manager Chris Clark said it was often important to get nationwide perspectives along to the accord meetings. “The group meets bi-monthly and we have a guest speaker, often local but not always, and it is a good chance for all the people from the regulatory agencies like the New Zealand Police and liquor licensing manager and licensed premises to come together and share any information they might have,” she said. “It is also a good chance for the licensed premises to ask any questions they might have for the regulatory agencies as well.”

The Ashburton Alcohol Accord is keen to find ways to reduce alcohol-related crime and tackle illegal behaviour in and around bars.

Playground almost a reality

Overwhelming response Ashburton Society of Arts has been overwhelmed with members wanting to display their works for its Early Spring Show which opens tomorrow. “We have a lot of enthusiastic members,” said spokesperson Ngaio McKee. About 17 artists were enrolled as of yesterday when hanging of works was under way, and there was one on the

waiting list. They are exhibiting along guest artist Claire Forbes from Timaru (pictured) in the annual show, which will run to September 15 at the Short Street Studio. Forbes’ series of landscapes in watercolour feature mountain and rural vistas with an evocative feel under moody skies, from areas including the West

Coast, Glenorchy and South Canterbury. “Sometimes I think the blue skies can be too pretty. Watercolour is magic at light conditions and I really like it when light is bursting through the skies,” she said. The exhibition will be open 11am to 4pm weekends, and 10am to 2pm Mondays and Wednesdays.

A children’s playground planned for Camrose Estates will be a reality within two to three weeks, the Ashburton District Council says. The council reported to the Methven Community Board at the board’s six-weekly meeting this week that there had been a hold-up with the installer, but this was now progressing. The playground’s location was shifted slightly after complaints from a neighbour. Board chairperson Dan McLaughlin said some in town were thinking it was this objection to the playground’s location that was causing the delay to its installation. But this was not the case, and the hold-up had been with the contractor. He hoped the council and its contractor would now make good on their reported time frame of two to three weeks. “We have heard that before,” he said. Last year the council released a landscape concept plan for the playground, showing equipment including a climbing cube, mouse house, octopus swing, double spring perch, play panel, wok and mound-stepping logs. The $95,000 cost was to be paid for by the developer as per conditions in the subdivision consent. Vegetation and mounding of the landscape were expected to create a buffer between the playground and residences, helping to reduce noise.

The disinformation war NZME When a projectile struck a Hong Kong woman in the eye this week as protesters clashed with the police, China responded quickly: Its state television network reported that the woman had been injured not by one of the police’s beanbag rounds, but by a protester. The network’s website went further: It posted what it said was a photo of the woman counting out cash on a Hong Kong sidewalk – insinuating, as Chinese reports have claimed before, that the protesters are merely paid provocateurs. The assertion was more than just spin or fake news. The Communist Party exerts overwhelming control over media content inside China’s so-called Great Firewall, and it is now using it as a cudgel in an information war over the protests that have convulsed Hong Kong for months. In recent days, China has more aggressively stirred up nationalist and anti-Western sentiment using state and social media, and it has manipulated the context of images and videos to undermine the protesters. Chinese officials have begun branding the demonstrations as a prelude to terrorism. The result, both in mainland China and abroad, has been to create an alternate version of what, seen from Hong Kong, is clearly a popular demonstration movement. In China’s version, a small, violent gang of protesters, unsupported by residents and provoked by foreign agents, is running rampant, calling for Hong Kong’s independence and tearing China apart. This narrative almost certainly reflects that of the country’s leaders, including Xi Jinping, and it is fuelling misunderstanding – and, increasingly, anger – among the Chinese public. That could, in turn, raise pressure on the government, increasing the risk of an overreaction or miscalculation based on limited or inaccurate information. People posting on Weibo, a Chinese social media service similar to Twitter, are increasingly calling for Beijing to act. “Beating them to a pulp is not enough,” one person said about protesters Tuesday, echoing an increasingly common sentiment on Weibo. “They must be beaten to death. Just send a few tanks over to clean them up.” Since China’s censors have the ability to quickly remove offending comments, the abundance of them suggests that the government is willing to tolerate the warning they deliver, however ominous it sounds. China has long curated the content that it allows its citizens to see and read.

Police clash with protesters in Hong Kong streets. Its new campaign has echoes of tactics used by other countries, principally Russia, to inundate domestic and international audiences with bursts of information, propaganda and, in some cases, outright disinformation. “Propagandists observe each other across borders, and they learn from each other,” said Peter Pomerantsev, the author of “This is Not Propaganda,” a new book that describes how authoritarian governments have weaponised social media that were once hailed as harbingers for democratic ideals. The disinformation has clearly been aimed at undermining sympathy for the Hong Kong protesters’ goals, which now include demands for greater democratic freedoms for the territory’s 7 million residents. Propaganda in the traditional sense, Pomerantsev said, would try to win over an audience, while disinformation is meant simply to sow confusion and fuel conspiracies. “You have to smother everything with doubt, and conspiracy is very effective in creating that,” Pomerantsev said in a telephone interview. Though China’s disinformation network has received less

global attention than Russia’s, the country’s officials have, over the last decade, built a machinery of online controls that far exceed any other country’s. Many overseas websites are blocked in China. Censors embedded within its internet companies delete anything unacceptable. The police have arrested people who speak out of turn in chat groups, or who share sensitive content online. The state media – whose history of propagandising stretches back to Mao Zedong’s era – have also made powerful inroads in the new media online, filling the mainland’s information vacuum with an officially Sinicized worldview. Hong Kong, which Britain returned to Chinese rule in 1997, remains outside China’s firewall, and thus is sitting along one of the world’s most profound online divides. Preserving the city’s freedom to live without the mainland’s controls has become one of the causes now motivating the protests. “Deep inside, mainlanders and Hong Kong people have very different life experiences and emotions,” said Fang Kecheng, an assistant professor of journalism at the Chinese

University of Hong Kong. “Without the shared emotions, it’s not easy for mainlanders – even those who can freely access information – to empathise with Hong Kong people, which is an important explanation for how the government has been able to create a parallel universe of narratives.” China’s new aggressiveness in the effort represents a shift in tactics. When large protests erupted in June over the Hong Kong government’s proposed law allowing the extradition of criminal suspects to the mainland, China’s state media – and officials – largely ignored them. That changed on July 1, when protesters stormed Hong Kong’s Legislative Council building. A flurry of articles and editorials in China’s state media followed, condemning the vandalism and violence – without explaining what the protesters were protesting about. Since then, the state media have vigorously defended the police in Hong Kong, belittled the protesters and accused Westerners of orchestrating the turmoil. Efforts to contextualise the situation or express sympathy for the protesters were swiftly purged from social media.

New Netflix comedy Jackie Van Beek and Madeleine Sami are directing a new comedy film for Netflix starring Aubrey Plaza. According to Deadline, The Breaker Upperers stars Van Beek and Sami will direct Hope, a new Netflix comedy written by Karen McCullah & Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith (Legally Blonde, 10 Things I Hate About You). Parks and Recreation and Legion star Aubrey Plaza will take on the lead role in the film, the plot of which is still under wraps. Hope will be the second film codirected by Van Beek and Sami.

shburton’s new library and civic centre will set new standards in the preservation of history and the use of environmentally sustainable design and features. On Thursday Ashburton District councillors approved general concept plans for the $51.3 million project and gave the go-ahead to the design team to further develop the design. In unveiling the plans, project manager Shaun Pont said a major milestone had been reached.

“It’s a pretty exciting project,” he said. The complex will see an extensive use of timber in its construction. Temperature control will be by a chilled beam heating and cooling system that utilises water from an artesian well. The library performance spaces and public spaces will run over two levels, with the council meeting chamber on the first floor. The second level will be the council’s administration space.

“When we started this project one of the big drivers was a strong focus on sustainability and one of the key elements in this was a timber structure. “We know it has a premium in cost but we’re putting it forward because of the benefits of sustainability,” Pont said. When you added earthquake resilience into the mix, timber ticked all the boxes, he said. The chilled beam heating and cooling system will utilise four on-site bores, two to draw water

into the system and two to return the same amount of water to the aquifer. This system is already in use in several new commercial buildings in Christchurch, including ECan and the city library, Turanga. It also comes with a cost-saving payback within two to five years. While environmentally sustainable features came at a higher cost, Pont said he was comfortable that these could be included within the $3 million the council

There were a number of key elements that were taken into account in the design, including the relationship of the new building with Baring Square east, the character of surrounding buildings and the integration of historic Pioneer Hall into the new building, architect Trevor Watt said. “Integrating PIoneer Hall was one of the bigger challenges and we tested lots of options with this. “It’s important to give it a func-

tional use, so we looked at it a bit out of the box and it will sit in a void, but will be integrated into the library,” he said. While the building will retain its exterior integrity, it will be given a treatment that will be a first in New Zealand – its roof will be removed and replaced with a glass dome which means the interior can be viewed from the building’s first floor. “It now becomes an exciting part of our project rather than being a challenging part.”

The new building will wrap around and open on to courtyards and a small espresso bar will be included in the western corner of the ground floor. This will have outdoor seating. “We’ve celebrated its links to historic buildings, the landscape and views to the alps,” Watts said. There will be decks on levels one and two overlooking Baring Square. The building will take advantage of the structural elements of Baring Square with its entrance

lining up with the clocktower and the square’s war memorial. Exterior materials will include a mix of timber, textured ceramic panels and the district’s arable sector will be recognised in the use of both textured and smooth stainless steel to reflect grain silos. The district’s connections to its history, its agriculture and its environment would be drawn on for the look and feel of the interior, such as a Canterbury Plains graphic on the floor, Watt said.

he final pieces of the puzzle are now in place, so let’s get set for what should be a very intriguing ride to the day the polls close. The closing of nominations for this year’s local government elections yesterday at lunchtime marked a significant milestone in the process of which will end with a potentially new-look council come October when the polls officially close. We’ve had conjecture, speculation and outcomes that surprised people, but now we can settle into the motions and do our homework to ensure that we make the best possible decisions when it comes time to tick the box. I think there’s a strong rea-

son to be happy with what has come through the nomination process, especially considering a week ago, things were looking a little grim when it came to the numbers. If there’s a concern, it’s the Methven Community Board. That there’s not enough names in the hat to even form a complete board is a little troubling, but hopefully the pending

by-election in that area is a seamless process and there’s a resolution in the quickest possible fashion. Other than that though, it’s game on. We’ve got elections in all other wards and each really does look as interesting as the next. The depth and strength of candidates this year is incredible with each and every person capable of making an extremely valuable contribution to the greater Ashburton District. The big message to get out though is that every vote is going to count and by that we mean that in order to ensure the right results, this district needs as many people to head to the polls

as possible. It’s easy to see, even at this early stage, that the margin of success across all options is going to be minimal and, in some cases, it looks certain to go right down to the wire, especially when it comes to the top job. That race in itself is worthy of every bit of information available, we have four outstanding contenders – all of whom would do a grand job in the role of mayor of this district, it’s just a shame that only one can make that contribution. What stands the four out is that they all bring a particular skill set or knowledge to the role from within the district and each would be able to pick up and

handle the role of mayor with aplomb should they be elected. I’m predicting one of the closest title races to the mayoralty we’ve seen. Over the coming weeks we’ll see a lot of our contenders stepping up to the plate and looking to deliver their key messages in order to foster support from within the community. The trick is to absorb as much of that information as you can and then take that knowledge and use it to make your final decision. The person that remains standing at the end of the October 12 is who will represent us for the next three years. And we owe it to ourselves to get it right.

k, here’s something to think about on a Saturday. Is Ashburton ready to develop its own local air park complex? It is something I’ve given a great deal of thought to over the years and I thought it might be kinda cool to run it up the flagpole and see what sort of reaction is out there now. Of course mention of flags is probably not a good start. Remember what happened last time they were in the news? I’m hoping for better with this. It is no secret amongst aviators that Ashburton is blessed with one of the best airfields in the country. Seriously. A lot of other places would kill for what we have here. And the biggest thing is, it has so much potential. Way more than has been currently recognised. When I was a kid in the ’60s, there was the ancient aero club hangar (recently demolished to make way for a nice new one) and the aero clubrooms. That was it. All the wartime stuff had gone, apart from an old Kittyhawk hangar on an adjoining farm. None of the other buildings now in-situ existed at that stage. Through the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and beyond there has been an explosion of structures out there, all on leased land. But the potential exists for the owner of the airfield, the Ashburton District Council, to carve off a portion and create a freehold airpark to further enhance the options the airfield presents and, importantly, return some revenue. Plus rates. It seems a no-brainer. Money for this town’s administration for jam. And a fantastic opportunity for aviators. Here’s what I am thinking. Well that dirt track parallels runway 11 across the back of the airfield and there’s enough room set back along there to carve off a number of freeholds on which to build hangar apartments. I’m guessing there would be a great market for them. A hangar apartment, to spell it out, offers accommodation for one’s aircraft and has an apartment or living space in a mezzanine or above. For those struggling in the imagination department, I’ve dug up something as a rough idea to get you in the game. There could be a mix. Say a

block of two or three in one tilt slab cluster. Maybe a few standalones as well to break things up a bit. But a properly planned nirvana for aviators would be a very cool concept. We are ideally placed here for recreational aviation in Canterbury. Harewood is increasingly a “big guns space”, Rangiora airfield is packed and, sorry Rangiora, but your airfield is not a patch on ours. Now there is town water right up to the area in question and it would seem there would be little standing in the way of this happening, other than the will. I’d really like to see a cluster of the right people develop this idea and take it to council. The opportunity to own an

The mortgage war is back on with banks making more cuts to fixed home loan rates and one offering a record low 3.55 per cent over one year. From yesterday Kiwibank cut its one-year rate by 24 basis points to 3.55 per cent and its two-year rate by 14 basis points to 3.65 per cent. According to interest.co.nz the Kiwibank rate is now the lowest amongst the major banks with ANZ, BNZ and Westpac all offering 3.69 per cent fixed over one year. Its rate is also the lowest over two years with ASB the nearest major offering 3.69 per cent over two years. The rate cuts come after the official cash rate was unexpectedly cut by 50 basis points to a record low of 1 per cent last week. The initial response saw the banks only trim their fixed rates by small amounts – just four basis points. But this week rates have fallen further. Mark Brown, head of fixed income at Harbour Asset Management, said global interest rates had fallen sharply over the past few months bringing bank funding costs down. Since the OCR cut last week wholesale rates had fallen further, he said. Both ASB bank and Westpac have raised money through bond issues in recent weeks. The banks offered to pay investors 85 basis points over the

five-year swap rate which he said was lower than had been seen for years. The ASB bond will pay investors just 1.83 per cent while the Westpac rate was set at 2.22 per cent. Previously the spread had been set at 95 basis points over the swap rate. He said the banks were able to do that because of the weight of money looking to invest in the fixed interest market. “The appetite for fixed interest has been strong. Institutions have been happy to buy at tighter spreads than they have before.” Bank bonds were being seen as safe haven investments in times of turmoil with markets falling as concerns over the potential for a global recession mount, he said. Mortgage brokers said the bank fixed home loans rate were now at an “unprecedented level” but could still fall further. “We are in uncharted territory,” said John Bolton at Squirrel Mortgages. He said rates could still go lower pointing to Australia where mortgage rates have hit 2.99 per cent on the same official cash rate as New Zealand. “There is strong potential for rates to keep slipping,” he said. But Bolton said the flipside of the coin was that rates were falling because things were looking pretty scary in the global economy. Karen Tatterson, a mortgage broker at Loan Market, said those wanting to break their mortgage and secure a lower rate should be

cautious as they could be hit with high fees. “It is worthwhile having that conversation and getting a quote.” But she said only those due to come off their fixed term soon were likely to save money. Those who had less than 60 days to go could book the rate in, she said. Hidden trap for some Tatterson said not all borrowers were winning in this market. She had heard of a case where falling property prices in Auckland meant a borrower had gone above the 80 per cent loan-to-value threshold and had been told by their bank they will now need to pay a higher interest rate. Those with lower equity face interest rates of 60 basis points or more above borrowers who have equity of at least 20 per cent in their home. “There are a lot of people in a good space, but there are some people who are going to be disadvantaged. “If you budgeted on paying below 4 per cent and now have to pay above it that can have a big impact on a person’s financial wellbeing,” she said. Those most at risk were people who bought at the peak of the market in 2016 with deposits just over 20 per cent who were facing falling house prices. But Bolton said people would have to ask to borrow more money to trigger a revaluation of their property by the bank.

Fonterra’s former chief executive Theo Spierings pocketed $43 million in his time in the job, based on a new payment disclosure from the embattled dairy company after Herald inquiries. The company has disclosed the Dutchman received an incentive payment of $4.67 million when he left the job in August last year, despite Fonterra’s huge financial losses. This takes his total pay during seven years as chief executive to $43m. Fonterra has revealed the final payment ahead of its scheduled disclosure in the upcoming 2019 annual report under pressure for more information, triggered by a Herald report that Spierings was in line for another payout under a historic incentive scheme. The company said it had made more detail available to its farmer-shareholders and was now extending that to the public. Fonterra this week announced an expected loss of $590-$675m this year and asset writedowns of about $820-$860m. It will not pay a dividend. In a statement Fonterra said the final payment to Spierings was made under the Velocity Leadership Incentive, a long-term in-

College A and Celtic A will contest the 2019 Mid Canterbury Netball premier one final after both won close, but vastly different semi-finals at the EA Networks Centre on Thursday night. Top-of-the-table College A took on fourth ranked United A in the night’s first semi-final and although the underdog United side led for much of the match, the young competition favourites came through when it mattered, just edging ahead in the dying stages to take it out 38-37. It was a dramatic finish to a drama-filled game, where neither side gave an inch from start to finish. United just managed to get their noses in front early, leading 11-9 at the end of the first quarter, but College came out firing in the second, scoring the first

three goals to lead 12-11. United recovered and by halftime they’d restored their twogoal margin to be 23-21 up at the mid-point, but again College A came out all guns blazing in the third quarter and soon the two sides were locked at 26-all. A late turnover gave United the slightest of edges again though, and by three-quarter time the margin was three, at 31-28. With their seasons on the line, College A were determined to fight their way back, but United A weren’t going to lie down. So started a final quarter which had the large, vocal crowd on the edges of their seats. College drew level at 31-all, then United got out by three, before College came back to again level things up. With three min-

utes on the clock, it was anyone’s game, at 35-all. With just over a minute to play, came the deciding moment. College A nabbed a turnover and scored off it which put them one goal ahead, and from there they made the mature yet possibly slightly risky decision to just pass the ball around as the final minute ticked away. It worked, and they held on for the win. College A coach Kaye Kennedy said she was incredibly proud of her young side. “I was really proud of the way the girls just managed to keep their cool in that last little bit when we were down, because there was a lot of crowd noise and it could have gone either way. “We could’ve absolutely lost our heads and turned the ball over,

but we didn’t,” Kennedy said. After the excitement died down from that game, the two versus three semi-final then pitted the defending champions Celtic A against a Hampstead A side they’d lost to in the season’s third and final championship round. While it wasn’t the best performance of the season by either side, with both struggling to turn possession into points at times, Celtic A held on to take it out 2422 to secure the second spot in next Saturday’s final. Celtic A coach Ange Leadley said it was a great team effort. “It was good to step it up another notch and see some things that we have been practising definitely put out on the court, and I think that the determination of the girls really stood out

for me,” Leadley said. In the night’s other premier one match, Methven A’s disappointing season came to a close with their second loss to Mt Somers, 28-25, in the play-off for fifth. For Mid Canterbury rugby coaches Dale Palmer and Jason Rickard, today’s final pre-Heartland Championship hit-out will be the best gauge yet of how their team is tracking. That’s because that final opposition is South Canterbury, a fellow Heartland Championship side which will have a point to prove in 2019 after losing last year’s Meads Cup final to Thames Valley, despite having gone in as the hot favourites. While neither team is likely to show their full hand today, with a meeting in week four of the 2019 Heartland Championship just around the corner, the game will still give both sides an idea of where they’re at. For Palmer and Rickard, with just a week to go before their 2019 campaign kicks off against Horowhenua-Kapiti in Ashburton, the game is a final chance to try things out. “As it’s the last pre-season game, we are giving some of the guys that haven’t had a start an opportunity, and one of those is Inoke Tonga at first-five, because he showed some real promise in the Canterbury B game,” Palmer said. That Canterbury B game was last weekend, and it was a mudbath, as today’s game could well be, too. The weather is again forecast to be wet and cold, and it means that the game between Mid Canterbury A and South Canterbury A which was meant to be the curtain-raiser to the main affair at Alpine Energy Stadium, had instead been moved to Pleasant Point in a bid to preserve the field at Alpine. Kick-off in the game between the two A sides will now be at 12.50pm at Pleasant Point, with the main game kicking off at Alpine at 2.30pm. Among the others making their first start for Mid Canterbury today in that main game will be Rakaia’s Cory Sinclair at halfback, with Will Mackenzie moving to the bench. Mid Canterbury’s other leading halfback contender from the past couple of seasons, Methven’s Tyler Blackburn, will also start from the bench today, having started at

took a lot from the Canterbury B game despite the atrocious conditions making the going tough. “They were a really big pack and they were fast, and while the weather took the speed away a bit, we measured up against them.” Playing a fellow Heartland Championship side in today’s final pre-season hit-out was good, Palmer said. It would be the best gauge yet of where his side was. “I don’t know a lot about South Canterbury, and to be fair we haven’t been – in the first three games – worried about who we are going up against and what they will be doing, we have just been worried about our structures,” Palmer said. And he was happy with progress, but still wanted to see more. “I just want to see the guys con-

tinue building on what we have been talking about doing at training, and keep building our patterns,” Palmer said. “And I just want to see the guys that are taking to the field and getting that first start, take that opportunity and create competition for spots.”

Japanese international signs to play for Otago NZME

Otago has signed Japanese international Harumichi Tatekawa for the next four weeks. Tatekawa (29) arrived midweek and has not been named in the Otago team to take on Southland in a Ranfurly Shield challenge today. Tatekawa has played more than 50 internationals for Japan, last playing for the Cherry Blossoms last year. He has also played Super Rugby for the Brumbies. He can play first five-eighth and midfield.

With Josh Ioane with the All Blacks and other pivot options injured, the Otago coaches have turned to Vilimoni Koroi to play first five-eighth. Koroi, a playmaker in the sevens game, has limited experience at first five-eighth and his performance in the first-up game last week was mixed. Tatekawa will be with the side for four weeks and will then return to Japan. Whether he makes the Japanese side for the World Cup is up in the

air; he did not make the squad which played in the Pacific Nations Cup. He joins Englishman Henry Purdy (wing) and South Africans Louis Conradie (lock) and Rowan Gouws (halfback) as foreign players signed by Otago. No more than six foreign players can be named in a match-day squad of 23 for a provincial side. Ioane could play for Otago again this year but that depends on his involvement with the All Blacks. Three Mid Canterbury rugby league players are set to lace up their boots in Invercargill this afternoon and take to the park for the Aoraki Eels. Seamus Smyth, Ash Searle and Leps Seitava have all been named in the starting line-up for the Aoraki side’s first outing in this year’s South Island Premier Competition against the Southland Rams, and team manager Steve McKeown is excited. He reckons that the three Mid Canterbury players and their team-mates could be a force in this season’s competition, and although Southland are no slouches on the league field, McKeown headed to Invercargill yesterday reasonably confident of a win. “I think, had we sent our best team down there, I would just about have been counting the points on the way down in the van,” McKeown said. The Eels are missing around five players due to injury, and another is out due to work commitments, but they’re still a good side, McKeown said. “We are still quietly confident we have enough in the team to get that win.” Searle was part of the Eels’ 2018 campaign, although he was affected by injury, and this year it’s a similar story. While he’s been named to start today, a shoulder complaint means the Eels have also taken injury cover, just in case. Searle is listed as a Chertsey Oilers player on the team list, as is Smyth. Although Smyth played for the Ashburton Barbarians in the Canterbury Rugby League di-

That leaves Seitava as the sole Barbarian listed on the team sheet, although he’s been more known as a Rakaia rugby player in the past couple of years, than a league player. But McKeown said he’s got potential. “He’s a bit green, but he’s

showed enough to suggest he can foot it with the big boys,” McKeown said. Southland already have a tick in the win column this season. Aoraki had the bye in round one, where Southland took to the field and notched up a 32-18 win over the West Coast Chargers, and Otago ran out 48-10 winners against a Canterbury Maori side brought into the competition to

replace Tasman, who aren’t fielding a team this year. While McKeown was confident heading into the season, he didn’t want to get too far ahead of himself, either. Last year, he felt the same way, but a couple of two point losses meant that the Eels ended up having to settle for third place. The Otago Whalers took the premiership out last year, and

they have the bye this week, before heading to Timaru to play the Eels next week. The week after that, the Eels will play Canterbury Maori, at the Allenton Rugby Club. Both that day, and next weekend in Timaru, junior sides from around the Aoraki region will also be in action. The Eels will then finish up against the West Coast in Timaru.

All Blacks’ loss just a blip in the big picture By Phil Gifford

T

he test in Perth last weekend was hard to watch for a New Zealander. For some of us the 47-26 thrashing stirred dark, uncomfortable memories. Kurtley Beale laughing as he dodged two tackles and strolled behind the posts for a try in the last minute reminded me that the worst display by an All Black team in the professional era was also in a Bledisloe Cup test, the game in Sydney in 1999. We lost then 28-7, exactly the same margin as last weekend in Perth, but that wasn’t the worst of it. Late in the Sydney game a scrum was set inside the All Black 22. By the time referee Jim Fleming took mercy on New Zealand and blew it up the Wallabies had marched over and through the All Black forwards, laughing and jeering as they went. Australia went on to win the World Cup in Cardiff nine weeks later. The All Blacks were beaten in the Cup semi-final by France, and

lost the playoff for third place to South Africa. Two 21 point losses to Australia before a World Cup? Should we draw any conclusions from history? This week Jeff Wilson, on the field that horrible rain drenched night in Sydney, joined Simon Barnett and myself on NewstalkZB and offered hope. “I really think this a better team than we had in 1999 to deal with this sort of adversity,” said Wilson. “The amount of experience there is in this side, they can well and truly respond to that (loss). I have great faith in what they’re doing, and their records show they have some of the best coaching there’s ever been in the game.” At Eden Park there’s a chance for the All Blacks to bury the Perth ghost in a hurry. I don’t believe Wilson is being too optimistic when he says there are crucial differences between the current team and the side of 1999, variations that suggest the present squad should handle pressure better. In 2015 the All Blacks have a

number of players who are at the end of their international careers. But in ‘99 the problem was not having too many older players but that most of the veterans, especially in the forwards, had left the game during the previous two years. Long term captain Sean Fitzpatrick had a knee so damaged it finally ground to a standstill. Michael Jones, our only loose forward fit to fully compare to Richie McCaw, had retired. Zinzan Brooke had gone, and Frank Bunce had fallen out of favour after flirting with playing for a French club. The captain was Taine Randell, as decent, and good hearted a person as ever played the game. But he was only 23 years old. Fifteen years after the campaign of ‘99 he’d tell me, “Basically the only one who had any idea of what I was going through was my girlfriend, Jo, who is now my wife. “We had no idea. The rugby was okay, but the All Blacks is a big machine. There are so many things you’re called on to do, and I just wasn’t mature enough.

“I talked to a few people about it, but not one ever said to me, ‘Don’t take the job. You’re out of your depth.’ I was in just my fourth year of international rugby, and I was one of the most experienced forwards in the team. “You need experience to be unruffled under pressure. To be able to look and go, ‘Yeah, we’ve been in this situation before.’” When Read runs out at the head of the All Blacks in Yokohama against South Africa on September 21, it’ll be his 122nd test. Christian Cullen, moved from fullback to centre in ‘99, would later say of the leadership vacuum in the semi-final lost 43-31 to France, “If ever there was a time when we needed Fitzy back it was now. He was the sort of bloke who would have said. ‘Listen, this is what we are going to ****ing do.’ But we didn’t have that type of leadership any more.” The current All Blacks do, and they have another string to their bow, which will need to really click in to bring the World Cup home. For years they’ve consciously

worked on developing on field leaders. For tonight’s test at Eden Park there are chances being taken with selection, but they’re not as great as they seem at first glance. In the front row Nepo Laulala gets just his 10th test as a starting prop. But beside him Dane Coles will be playing his 64th. Richie Mo’unga plays his fourth test as a starting first-five, but his halfback, Aaron Smith will be in his 86th international. Coach Steve Hansen is in his 16th season with the All Blacks, the last eight as head coach. With the position, despite the team’s quite extraordinary success, comes sniping, and the latest barbs centre on the theory that Hansen is past his use by date. The Bledisloe Cup test at Eden Park, and, much more importantly, the World Cup, will be the only true ways to measure that theory. But having been in Sydney, and then at Twickenham, in 1999 I’m one who’s happy that the men in charge of the 2015 All Black team are weathered troupers, who have walked this road before.

A year after coming together to contest a revived tournament, Mid Canterbury’s senior men’s and women’s basketball teams are preparing for another shot this weekend. They’re on the West Coast for the South Island Divisional Basketball Tournament, a tournament they were integral in bringing back to life last season, and hopes are high that they might come home successful. The tournament is a new version of a third division tournament that used to be contested annually, but fell by the wayside a few years ago. The old tournament was aimed at the smaller associations in the South Island, and last year those associations decided to bring it back and take turns at organising it, with Mid Canterbury going first, followed by the West Coast this year. Last year, Mid Canterbury fielded two men’s teams and one women’s team, with one of the men’s teams – Mid Canterbury Green – taking out the men’s title, and the women finishing fourth. This year there’s just one Mid Canterbury men’s side making the trip to the Coast, but it’s a strong side full of players who have played a lot of good basketball this season. They’ll line up in a two pool competition. They are in pool B along with West Coast and ABC Rhythm, while pool A will see the Stoke Bears, South Canterbury, the ABC Rebels and Westland fight it out. Spokesperson for the Mid Canterbury women’s side Ange Leadley said the women’s draw will feature three teams – Mid Canterbury, West Coast and Westland. They will all play each other twice, once today and then once tomorrow, to decide the tournament winner. Last year, the women’s team

to have some fun,” Leadley said. The Mid Canterbury women will start their campaign against Westland with a 10am game today before taking on West Coast at 6pm, while the Mid Canterbury men will play ABC Rhythm at 2pm followed by West Coast at 6pm.

Crunch time for MCUFC The Mid Canterbury United Football club might not have been able to make it out on to the field last Saturday due to weather, but will still have a shot at lifting the Mainland Football division one title. The side travel north today to face off against the Burnham FC Bobcats, while their game from last Saturday against Nomads United AFC has been re-scheduled to be played in Rolleston on Thursday. Goals will once again be the main focus for the Mid Canterbury side who still sit behind Halswell United on goal difference. Should Halswell win today, Mid Canterbury will need to win their two remaining games and with a significant margin in both to boost their goal difference. In division five the Mid Canterbury United Football Club’s second team also have their sights set on taking a title, currently sitting top of the table with one game to go. They host the Universities AFC Jugs at the Ashburton Domain, a side who have managed to pick up one win and two draws this season. Mid Canterbury currently sit on top of the table by one point to the second Universities AFC Yellow Jackets, and two-points clear of the third-and-fourth-placed Nomads United AFC White and Nomads United AFC Pressies. The game begins at 2.30pm. With the division three title safely locked away for the season, Methven FC host the Selwyn United division three side at the Methven Domain today. Nine points clear of the second placed Western AFC Generals, Methven will look to extend their eight game unbeaten run since the leagues were adjusted earlier this season. In division six, the Methven FC Senior Bs host the Universities AFC Presidents at the Methven Domain. Both games also begin at 2.30pm.

Eden Park clash will test the resolve of Hansen’s All Blacks By Patrick McKendry For All Blacks coach Steve Hansen, this is a test like any other – it comes with the usual expectation of a good performance and a victory. No change there, then. And yet, really, it’s a bit different; it’s his 100th in charge of New Zealand, it’s his final Bledisloe Cup encounter, and it’s a match which will prove whether his team of talented individuals retain a trophy housed in Wellington since 2003. It will also give an indication of whether this team is in decline or not. Pressure? Yes, you could say that.

Leaving aside the World Cup for a moment, and the thought of that looming defence of the William Webb Ellis Cup may be playing a part in the underwhelming performances of Hansen’s men this year, this test before what will be a sell-out Eden Park is a special occasion for many reasons. Four years ago the All Blacks were in a similar position of having to win at Eden Park after losing Bledisloe 1 and they responded in what was Dan Carter’s final test at home; one of many highlights enjoyed by perhaps the best ever first-five to have played the game. Similarly, this is a test Hansen will not forget in a hurry, win or lose.

Not that he has dwelled on his milestone after eight years in charge. “I haven’t even thought about it,” he said. “They’re all special.” Extra special if the All Blacks respond to last week’s record drubbing in Perth, though? “They’re all special when you win, of course they are. “It’s a privilege of being given the honour of being head coach of the All Blacks, even if it’s only for one test. “It’s no different to a player. You strive to being the best you can be and if you play one test match, well that’s better than the bloke who played none, isn’t it. “Every test match we play – I’m

not big on milestones, I think let’s enjoy it for what it is. “This is an exciting one because there’s a lot on it. That’s why they’re called test matches, they’re going to test our resolve to step up to the plate and we’ll learn a lot out of it.” There were various conclusions reached after Hansen’s 17-minute press conference at the team’s Auckland hotel this week. Grumpy, spiky, a bit on edge, were common observations as to his demeanor. And it’s an approach he will be expecting of his players: professional, business-like, direct. They haven’t suddenly become poor players, they just haven’t been playing very well.

It’s clear their attitude wasn’t right at Optus which was curious but the reality is the game was in the balance when Scott Barrett was sent off and the result a virtual foregone conclusion once he was. Can the Wallabies reach that level of performance again at a place they haven’t won since 1986? Possibly. Will the All Blacks play as poorly again? It’s doubtful. “I’m loving it,” Hansen said about the position in which he and his team find themselves. “This is the best challenge we could get. We didn’t front up last week and we need to front up this week or it [Cup] will be going back to Australia.”

Monbet has raced just once – at Addington on a Sunday in March – since winning the Dominion Handicap in November of 2016 owing to numerous health setbacks. The relief of his Woodend Beach co-trainers, Greg and Nina Hope, at finally making it back to the races was short-lived. “About a week later he developed an infection in his leg that went right through his body,” said Greg Hope. “At one stage we were frightened he was going to die. “We ended up running every antibiotic known to man through him and that eventually got on top of it.”

So, it was back to square one – again. It’s hard to complain when a horse has won you over $770,000, but it’s fair to say Hope was at the end of his tether. “One day we’ll be able to write a book about him. “We’ll call it The Trials and Tribulations of Monbet,” he quipped. “It will be a best-seller.” Enghien, a former two and three-year-old Trotter of the Year, hasn’t been seen since the Harness Jewels at Cambridge in June of last year. He missed his entire five-yearold season. “He had a little strain on a fetlock so we played it safe, really. “Just to make sure it didn’t end up being a problem long term we played it on the side of caution. “He’s good as gold now after a long, slow build. “It’s probably been five months since he came back in to work.” Enghien, in the hands of Ben Hope, won the four-horse trial, getting over the top of In Se-

quence and Hey Yo in the shadows of the post. Monbet sat last, on his stablemate’s back, and was allowed to run to the line under his own steam for regular driver, Ricky May. Greg Hope, speaking 24 hours after the trial, was suitably pleased with everything. “Ricky jumped off Monbet and said he felt awesome. “They both pulled up well and I gave them a light jog this morning (Thursday). “They’ll trial again next week and then we’ll have a look at a race for them.” That won’t be easy. “They’re so high in the handicaps, we really need a free-for-all because I don’t want them chasing off long marks. “Enghien is rated 100 and Monbet is a 127.” Hope said he inquired about getting Monbet’s rating reduced given it was approaching three years since his last win, but that fell on deaf ears. Enghien is the more forward of

the two, and with a slightly more palatable rating, he might be the first one seen on race night. “Based on what we’ve felt, Enghien is slightly more forward than Monbet, and their heart rates reflect that, too. “There is nothing like a good run or two under the belt and hopefully we can get those runs before the other good ones hit the track.” Don’t for a second think either horse will have lost their edge, either. “I’ve got no doubt they’re both as good as anything running around at present. “I know they’ve had a long time off the scene and are going to need a race or two to see the best, but it’s still there.” As for driving engagements when they inevitably clash, Hope says May will get the pick of the two and son Ben will drive the other. “We are lucky that we own Monbet ourselves and our partner in Enghien, Richard Dellaca, is very relaxed about it, too.”

Progressive galloper Helena Baby faces his toughest assignment to date when he tackles a star-studded field in the Gr.2 U S Navy Flag Foxbridge Plate (1200m) at Te Rapa today. But trainer John Bell has full confidence in his lightly-tried five-year-old as he attempts to go one better than stablemate Julius, who was beaten a nose last year by reigning Horse of the Year Melody Belle. Spring might not yet have sprung, but a host of Group One stars will assemble at Te Rapa today, with Melody Belle and boom stablemate Te Akau Shark among them. Despite the step-up in class, Bell is pleased with Helena Baby, who routed his rivals in the Listed Opunake Cup (1400m) last month, and believes he can make that quantum leap. “He had a freshen-up since his win at Taranaki and the little bit of fast-work he has had has been on the course proper and the sectionals have been very satisfying,” he said. “He has got fresh legs and I have no issues with him coming back to 1200m. “We are going to ride our own race and not worry about Melody Belle and Te Akau Shark or any of the other top horses. “He steps up to weight-for-age but we are very comfortable with where we are at and I am looking forward to it.” Helena Baby has won his past five races and has stepped through the grades to be rated 88, ten points inferior to his ultra-talented but injury-plagued stablemate Julius when he contested the race last year. “They are different types of horses but they have the same strength, determination and class,” Bell said. “This horse has carried lower weights and come through the grades.” Owned in Hong Kong, there is a chance that New Zealand racing fans will only see Helena Baby on two more occasions, with the Gr.1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m) on August 31 also on the radar. “At this stage, there is a possibility of him going into quarantine on September 3 to head up to Hong Kong,” Bell said.
