One of New Zealand’s darkest days has cast its ugly shadow on Mid Canterbury. While many people who call the district home were caught up in the effects of the terrorist attack in Christchurch, police flooded to protect local places of Muslim worship. Ashburton’s Islamic place of worship on Tinwald’s Jane Street between State Highway 1 and McMurdo Street was blocked off by multiple armed police officers and police cars. After the Christchurch shootings and well into the evening a heavy police presence remained at the Ashburton Masjid. The Masjid was converted from a church building in 2017. The Masjid is just up the road from Tinwald School which was advised to close its grounds following the arrival of police. “We received a notification after 3 o’clock to ensure all students and staff go home as soon as possible and that all the buildings will be locked and that is what we have done,” school principal Peter Livingstone said.
“I have also sent a text message to all of our families to ensure that children do not come back to the school to play as the grounds are closed. “All our thoughts are with the people of Christchurch.” An online manifesto said to be written by one of the alleged shooters suggests the Ashburton mosque was also a target. Attacking the Christchurch and Linwood mosques also allowed for an extra planned attack on the mosque in Ashburton, he said. “Whilst I am unsure as of this time of writing whether I will reach that target, it was a bonus objective.” Many people were placed in lockdown in Christchurch, including boarding students at wellknown high schools. St Margaret’s College boarder Sammy Hood was at a volleyball tournament and was placed in lockdown at the New Brighton library. Hood said they were initially not sure what was happening, and that their parents had been advised to not come to the school to collect them. The lockdown of schools Christchurch-wide ended shortly

after 6pm, allowing parents to collect their children under a heavy police presence around the city. On behalf of the Ashburton District Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel said she was sending her heartfelt support to the families of the victims of the Christchurch mosque shootings. “This is an incredible shock for all of New Zealand and I’m so saddened by what has happened.” Favel said she had been in touch with Ashburton police and said she understood there was an increased police presence in the community to ensure public safety. “To the best of my knowledge everything is contained in Christchurch but this is a developing event and if anyone in our community sees any suspicious activity you must report it to the police. This is such a distressing situation for New Zealand,” she said. Favel commended the rapid and outstanding response of New Zealand Police to the incident. She has sent messages of sympathy and support to Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel and to the Ashburton Muslim community.

NZ’s innocence shattered Forty people have been killed and 20 people hurt after four gunmen stormed two Christchurch mosques in the worst terror attack on New Zealand soil. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said 10 people were killed at Linwood and 30 at the Deans Ave mosque near Hagley Park. A further 20 people were injured. Ardern said it was an “unprecedented” situation and described it as a terrorist attack. Those in custody had not been on any terrorism watch list: “It’s not a matter of someone having slipped under the radar.” She said it was obvious the at-
tacks had been planned for some time. Three people were arrested in relation to the attacks, while one other was arrested separately. Ardern said she could not give any more detail about the alleged offenders. There were two bombs attached to suspects’ vehicles but they had been disarmed. She said she was asking questions about them, including access to firearms, of her officials. The National Security Threat Level had been lifted from low to high. The Defence Force was transporting more police to

attack. “We stand here and condemn absolutely the attack that occurred today by an extremist, right wing, violent terrorist. “[He] has taken the lives,” he said, before correcting to: “they have stolen the lives in a vicious, murderous attack that has claimed so many New Zealanders. Morrison said the attack reminds us about the evil that is ever present and would seek to “strike us out at any time.” The lockdown of schools throughout Christchurch was lifted at 5.50pm. - NZME

Explosive Students protest climate change devices stolen BY LINDA CLARKE

Police are investigating after a number of items were stolen from a locked shed at the Ashburton railway yard this week. Police were advised at 11am on Thursday morning that a large quantity of equipment, including 24 railway detonators, a fire extinguisher and a handheld communications radio were taken. “The detonators are used as a secondary emergency warning device for train drivers and others on the network, and carried by track gangs and Rail Protection Officers, and are a key part of rail safety rules,” KiwiRail acting chief operations officer Henare Clarke said. “They should not be detonated near people. “KiwiRail requires that detonators are kept locked in boxes and stowed securely in vehicles, which are also locked. We will investigate whether security can be increased at the site where the break-in occurred.” Senior sergeant Matt Emery said police have concerns that if the items were found by someone who does not understand what they are, they could cause serious injuries. The detonators are round, orange and marked as ‘Explosive’.
Thirteen youngsters from Ashburton Borough School led the town’s student protest over climate change yesterday, while Mount Hutt College students were spreading the word in Methven. Members of Borough school’s environmental committee, known as the Greenies, had spent their lunchtimes this week preparing signs aimed at making adults think about the impacts of climate change. From the chessboard on East Street yesterday, they lined up and chanted their message at passing motorists. One of the three student leaders, 11-year-old Maddie, said the group received plenty of encouragement from drivers, who tooted their support. The Greenies had originally planned to send a video message of support to striking Christchurch students but were encouraged by their principal to stage their own protest in Ashburton during the lunch break. “We’ve had a really positive reaction and we have had people say chant louder, you’re doing an awesome job,” Maddie said. Teacher John Hooper said Maddie and other student leaders Bella and Charlotte had galvanised the Borough students to get their message across. “They want people to limit climate change and they want the Government to think about how to limit climate change.” He said the older students had a good

In Methven, Mount Hutt College’s head girl Caitlin Smith said a “tree” had been erected on the campus and students were sticking “leaves” with ideas and thoughts around climate change. “We have had a lot of discussion about the day and what we can do around school, in terms of less pack-

aging in the café and more recycling bins.” She said it was good students had been able to take part in the student action during their lunch hour without interrupting the academic programme. “There is more we can do in our little part of New Zealand and more we can do in our school.” The government says climate change is already occurring in New Zealand, with higher temperatures, a change or rainfall patterns and more frequent extreme weather events. In Canterbury, there will be up to 35 more days where temperatures exceed 25 degrees Celsius, and while the number of frosts will drop, rainfall will vary.

In brief ‘No animosity’ The man accused of assaulting Green Party co-leader James Shaw says “sorry to New Zealand” and that he has no animosity towards Shaw. The man, 47, appeared in Wellington District Court yesterday. He has been charged with injuring Shaw with intent, which carries a maximum penalty of five years. He entered no plea and was granted interim name suppression. Shaw was grabbed and hit in the face as he walked to work in central Wellington just before 8am on Thursday. Shaw said he had a bit of a sore head and a lot of people have these kinds of incidents occur and come off a lot worse than I do, he said. - NZME
More fruit flies Two more of the male Queensland fruit fly have been found in the Auckland suburb of Northcote, bringing the total to six. Biosecurity New Zealand says the discovery means it is “zeroing in” on the flies and will increase its operational response. The latest finds will mean an expansion of Zone A in Northcote and restrictions on the movement of fruit, vegetables and green waste, head of Biosecurity New Zealand Roger Smith said. Big contributions recognised One community group and three individuals were recognised for their contribution to life in the Ashburton District at a civic ceremony in Ashburton yesterday. The annual awards recognise individuals and groups who have given outstanding voluntary service to the community and range across several categories. In some a number of awards can be made each year but with the most prestigious, the Ashburton Medal, there can be just one recipient. Mayor Donna Favel presented each of the recipients with their award and read for each the nomination document that outlined the organisations they had been involved in and the time they had given to their community. “I was thrilled with the high calibre of the nominations for this year’s awards. It’s such a pleasure to see all of the hard work happening in our community thanks to the selfless efforts of these volunteers and I’m delighted to be able to present these awards to four very deserving people and groups,” she said. The four who received awards were very worthy recipients, she said.

Martin Nordqvist’s services to the Methven community through his involvement with many organisations over many years, were recognised yesterday when he was awarded the Ashburton Medal. Nordqvist farmed in the Methven area and has had a life-long involvement in harness racing, serving for several years on the Harness Racing NZ Executive. He is a past committee member and president of both the Methven and Mt Hutt Trotting Clubs and is a life member of both. Over many years he has given time to his chosen sport, indoor bowls, on both the national and local executives. He spent two years as the organisation’s national president.
Mayor’s Award recipient Jill Newton Jill Newton has been involved with Town Watch for 24 years and for all of that time has been the group’s secretary. She is out on Saturday nights, twice a month for five hours each night, travelling about 100 kilometres each shift keeping an eye on Ashburton after dark. Patrollers are the eyes and ears of the police and if they come across incidents where intervention is needed they alert police. Since the early 1970s Jill has been involved with the New Zealand Ostomy Society and has run many camps for young ostomates.
She has held various positions with the Ashburton branch of the organisation and for almost 21 years took on the roll of secretary and treasurer. She has been secretary of the South Canterbury branch for 16 years and has been a member of the national executive for 18 years. She adds to her volunteer list, 34 years evening district nursing services, 33 years as a community pool volunteer lifeguard, 13 years and a Civil Defence welfare team member and membership of the Ashburton Kidney Support Group.
His community involvement is extensive. He chaired the organising committee for the centennial celebrations of the town’s secondary and primary schools, spent three terms on the Methven Community Board, and two terms as an Ashburton District councillor. He currently chairs the Mt Hutt Hall committee and is on the Methven Domain Board. He is also a Justice of the Peace. Nordqvist said he was humbled to receive the award. Volunteering was what his family had done over many generations, he said. “Everything I have been able to do has been made possible by the support of my wife Jenny and my family.”

Mayor’s Award for Public Service, Gwenda Ireland Gwenda Ireland’s years as a volunteer can be counted in more than 30. She started her involvement with Ashburton’s cancer support group, helping with local fundraising and Christmas Baking. She is active in the organisation’s annual Daffodil Day appeal. She also has a long history as a volunteer with the Friends of Ashburton Hospital and for 31 years she has volunteered weekly,serving morning tea. The group also pre-
pares toiletry packs for patients and knits woollen garments for the Ashburton Maternity ward. After the earthquake when a number of patients were transferred to Ashburton, Gwenda was one of a team of volunteers who were part of a visitor roster making sure they had the toiletries they needed as many arrived with very little. With husband Peter, Gwenda is a regular on the meals on wheels delivery roster.

Ashburton Age Concern has been recognised for the important role its volunteers plays in the lives of older people in providing a range of support and social activities. The organisation is a service, information and resource agency that links people with other groups and organisations. It offers professional and practical help, advice and support. Across the organisation there are more than 90 volunteers. Those volunteers organise the annual Lavender Day, provide courtesy drivers, run a 50 plus club and 206 Club and run falls prevention and confident driving courses.

The special relationship between Fairton School and nearby Talley’s vegetable processing plant grew this week with the delivery of 44 new safety vests for students. The school and Talley’s signed a road safety agreement in 2016 and since then the school community and Talley’s staff and truck drivers have been sharing the road outside their school with new purpose. Every student at the school, 35 at the moment, has a hi-vis vest that they wear to and from school and on school outings. Principal Mike Hill said the vests, with the school’s logo printed on the front, meant students were highly visible whether they were using the road or at other school events. “We even wear them when we go across the road to the Fairton Hall.” The vests are supplied by Talley’s as part of the road safety agreement and some of the original vests were needing replacement. Talley’s drivers are also under instruction to obey the speed limit and be extra careful around the school. Talley’s plant manager Jeff Richardson and HR manager Julie Cumberland were on hand to deliver the new vests yesterday. Richardson said a large number of people worked at the plant on Fairfield Road, using the road with heavy trucks and trailers going to and from the plant. He said Talley’s was proud to support the school and keen for the relationship to grow further.

Ashburton College, a 50-year journey By Sue NewmaN

Ashburton College is today looking to a new future with a $50 million rebuild of the current school announced on Thursday by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, but the school also has a past that stretches back over two schools and more than a century. Prior to 1965 Ashburton was served by two secondary schools, Ashburton High School on the site of today’s Ashburton Intermediate and Ashburton Hakatere College on the site of the Ashburton Police station, polytech and Balmoral Hall. Changes in the education system, with the focus moving from specialist technical colleges to a broader education for all students signalled change for Ashburton, but it was to be many years before the final amalgamation of the two secondary schools was sealed. In the early 1960s the issue of amalgamation was discussed, discussion continued and the community was often divided over the prospect of two schools with long histories and different philosophies being combined as one. There was a strong push for the minister of Education to take the initiative on amalgamation and in early 1964 Arthur Kinsella spoke at a public meeting and asked for guidance from the community.
Within five years, the Ashburton College of today will be a vastly different place, when its $50 million rebuild is completed. Options considered were for two single sex schools or one co-ed school which would need to operate from the two existing school sites until a new school was built. A co-ed school won the day and while the two school boards were not keen on amalgamation they agreed to work on the project. Final proposals were approved in November 1964 and the new school was established from term one, 1965. Dave Thurlow was appointed

Several names were suggested for the new school – Churchill College, John Grigg College, McCallum College and Canterbury College, but Ashburton was chosen as a compromise that would retain links with both of the amalgamated schools. sites for seven years with the senior division on the High School site and the juniors at Hakatere College while the new school was built. The Walnut Avenue site was a controversial choice for the new school. The original decision was to consolidate the secondary school on the high school site and develop an intermediate school on the Hakatere site. This was overturned by a citizens group that rallied the com-
munity and involved deputations to Prime Minister Keith Holyoake. An offer by local businessman Bob Burnett to buy the Hakatere site was the deal swinger and the announcement that a new school would be built on the Walnut Avenue site was made on September 1968. Tenders were called in 1969 and the first stage of work was completed in 1971 and the juniors moved in at the start of the school year. The seniors did not follow until June 1972. The new school was home to 1200 students, rising to 1400 in 1974. When it opened the new school was considered very modern. It was the first S68 type secondary school built in New Zealand. It consisted of a series of teaching blocks connected by covered walkways with a library as its central focal point. It included lecture theatres and team teaching facilities as well as an arts and crafts block, a senior studies block a gym and administration block. R Block was added in 1986. Almost 50 years after it was built the school no longer meets modern educational needs and its buildings have become tired and outdated. The new school will, like its predecessor, be built in stages, with the first likely to be ready in 2022.

o take a step into the small colonial-style St Andrew’s building at Tinwald is to take a step back in time. It is the oldest church structure which remains in regular use in Mid Canterbury, having opened on St Patrick’s Day in 1879. The woodwork and stained glass windows hark back to an era of when churches were the heart and soul of their surrounding communities. Built for 430 pounds and blessed by

Bishop Harper, Primate of New Zealand, on March 17, 1879, it later required enlarging, and this was done around the turn of the century, at a cost of 120 pounds. Last century it was roughcast, because weatherboards had begun to deteriorate. Nevertheless, it is a building which has stood the test of time, and over the decades the church community it serves has proved to be just as solid. While congregation numbers have mirrored a nationwide decline as religious worship falls out of favour, there remains a core of up to 30 regular attendees, and

Reverend Lois Ranson and Reverend Surrey Lamont serve the parish, and they are themselves long-time parishioners who have graduated from being lay preachers to becoming ordained. Ranson’s life-long association with the church goes back to attending Sunday school as a child. Her father was headmaster of Tinwald School and the family lived just around the corner. It was at a time when the majority of people attended church, and she remembers the fairs held twice a year with pony rides, kiddy train, chocolate wheels and the highly popular dunkthe-vicar event. Ranson and

late husband Clarry were married there in 1963, most of their five children were christened there, and the funerals of both her parents, Alex and Orma Saunders, were held there. And last year, in her role as minister, she had the pleasure of marrying her youngest son and his new bride there. Ranson recalled that for the church’s 100th anniversary a new driveway was installed, and the parish was involved in bringing out two refugee families from Vietnam as a centenary project, who went on to work and thrive in the Ashburton community. The parish continues to be actively involved in its surrounding community, and joins with other parishes for a charity blanket knitting drive and has held an indoor bowling club at the church hall for 40 years. It runs a community fruit and vegetable garden, based at the rear of the church, and operates a
low-cost housing project across the road. Among long-time parishioners looking forward to 140-year anniversary celebrations is Kevin Stewart. His parents lived one-and-a-half blocks away when he was growing up, and it was said you could set your clock by his mum Stella arriving each Sunday. He was baptised at the church, and is still a regular despite now living on the other side of the river in Ashburton. “I pass all the other churches to come out here, because I feel it’s my church,” Stewart said. “It’s a close-knit family, to me it’s a feeling of belonging.” Ranson agreed, and said there was something very unifying about worshipping together. “There’s a feeling of sacredness about this place.” A celebration service will be held on Sunday at 10am, and this will be taken by the new bishop of the Christchurch diocese, Peter Carrell. The service will be followed by a catered lunch in the church hall. People with ties to the parish going back generations are expected to attend from throughout Canterbury.

Kim rethinking US talks North Korean leader Kim JongUn will soon make a decision on whether to continue diplomatic talks and maintain the country’s moratorium on missile launches and nuclear tests, a senior North Korean official said, noting the US threw away a golden opportunity at the recent summit between their leaders. Vice Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui, addressing an urgent meeting Friday of diplomats and foreign media in Pyongyang, including The Associated Press, said the North was deeply disappointed by the failure of the two sides to reach any agreements at the Hanoi summit between Kim and President Donald Trump. She said Pyongyang now has no intention of compromising or continuing talks unless the United States takes measures that are commensurate to the changes it has taken – such as the 15-month moratorium on launches and tests – and changes its “political calculation.” Choe, who attended the February 27-28 talks in Hanoi, said Kim was puzzled by what she called the “eccentric” negotiation position of the US She suggested that while Trump was more willing to talk, the US position was hardened by the uncompromising demands of

Israeli military aircraft have bombed Hamas facilities in the Gaza Strip, hours after two rockets were launched from the Palestinian enclave at Tel Aviv in the first such attack since a 2014 war. There was no immediate word of casualties in the air strikes that hit six buildings used by the dominant Islamist group’s security forces, and which had been evacuated as a precaution. Witnesses said powerful explosions from the air strikes rocked buildings in Gaza and lit the skies over targeted sites. The Israeli military said it was targeting “terror sites” in Gaza. In a possible sign of further escalation, it said rocket sirens were sounded in Israeli communities near the Gaza border. On Thursday night, the sirens howled further north, in Tel Aviv, Israel’s commercial capital, set off by what the military said were two incoming, longerrange rockets from Gaza. That salvo caused no casualties or damage, missing built-up areas. But it rattled Israeli nerves ahead of an April 9 election in which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is seeking a fifth term on the strength of his national security credentials. Explosions were heard in Tel Aviv and witnesses said interceptor missiles were fired skyward and detonated – although the military said no rockets were shot down. It was the first such attack on the city since the 2014 Gaza war between Hamas and Israel. There have been several smaller rounds of fighting since, reined in by Egyptian and UN mediations. An Israeli military spokesman laid the blame with Hamas. – AP

Chance to be a dad again A new marriage and a baby! Chance the Rapper’s new wife Kirsten Corley revealed on her Instagram Story that she and her newly minted spouse are expecting their second child together. Kirsten posted a selfie in a yellow bikini with her baby bump clearly sticking out. Her hand rested on top of her belly. “Oh yeah, we’re pregnant,” she captioned the photo. Chance added that the baby is due in September. The news comes after Chance and Kirsten held a star-studded wedding ceremony at the Pelican Hill resort in California. Melting Mediterranean lamb rolls
Lamb ■ Lay a schnitzel out on a clean chopping board. If you are using beef schnitzels, you may want to cut them in half so you have two pieces to roll up. If your schnitzels are quite thick, bang them out thinner with a rolling pin or meat mallet to make them larger

– the thinner they are the better, as you have more area for rolling. ■ Near one edge of a piece of schnitzel, place a slice of cheese, a slice of capsicum, a few pieces of onion, a few pistachios, half a prune, a few coriander leaves, a sprinkle of lemon zest and a pinch of cumin. ■ Season with salt and pepper and roll up carefully. Secure the roll with a toothpick by threading it through the meat a couple of times. Repeat for the remainder of the schnitzels.
■ Brush the rolls all over with a little oil and season with salt and pepper as required. ■ Place on a hot BBQ grill or in a frying pan on a high heat, turning every couple of minutes to brown evenly. It will take about 10 minutes for the lamb or beef rolls to cook through. To serve ■ Remove from the heat, sprinkle with fresh coriander, a squeeze of lemon and a dash of oil. Sxerve these with garlic pita breads and a fresh green salad.

New Zealand as we knew it has died Y
esterday life in New Zealand changed for ever. When gunmen walked into two of Christchurch’s mosques and started shooting those inside. Dozens were injured and several were killed. It was an event that most in New Zealand would never have believed could occur. What most believed could never happen, did. We’re no longer immune to the radical racism that plagues most countries, we are no longer a place
that people of all colours, creeds and cultures can freely call home. In just a few short minutes we’ve joined the rest of the world in having a culture where differences are not tolerated, where being different can cost a life. Yesterday was the day New Zea-
land as we know it, died. We’ve prided ourselves as a people who welcomed all comers. We prided ourselves on being tolerant. We are proudly New Zealanders and we welcomed people from all corners of the world to share the privilege of being New Zealanders too. People from other parts of the world who choose to come to New Zealand do so because they choose to do so. They come for the freedom we offer for them to live their lives
in their own way, worshipping as they wish, celebrating their own culture. For people from other cultures living in New Zealand is like living a dream They become part of the huge cultural mix that is now New Zealand, the mix that makes us a blessed country. And we’ve taken pride in that, rightly so. Killing people because they may worship a different God, wear different clothes, speak a different language is not who we are as a
people. That was yesterday. Today we’re just like the rest of the world where being different can cost you your life. Those killed, those injured were our people. Those who killed are not. Yesterday will go down in history as one of our bleakest and it will go down in history as the day New Zealand changed for ever. No longer are we a safe haven. The mosque gunmen killed more than innocent victims, they killed New Zealand as we knew it.

This Government is delivering for Ashburton
E
ducation is one of the Government’s top priorities. This was underlined, along with our commitment to rebuild outdated and unsuitable classrooms, with the announcement of a $50 million investment in Ashburton College. It was quite special standing alongside the Prime Minister and Minister of Education as they made this announcement, and seeing the delight and excitement in the eyes of the Ashburton College community. It was quite clear that, with this announcement, came a sigh of relief for many. This investment is important and it is in alignment with our Government’s 30-year strategic plan and outlook for education. I’m proud of this announcement because it reinforces my belief, and the Government’s work programme, that we must support quality education that enables our children, and young people to participate and interact confidently with the

education system. We must ensure we’re doing all that we can to equip students for the 21st century. That is why this investment comes at a critical time for the Ashburton College community. The majority of Ashburton College’s buildings were constructed in the 1970s. Many of the classrooms are in poor condition, inflexible, and are disconnected teaching spaces that do not support collaboration between teachers or students. This investment comes at a critical time because it recognises the college’s move into the new, integrated school curriculum and their desire to create a modern twenty first century
learning environment, one that is conducive to the diverse needs and abilities of its students. For too long, the previous Government allowed classrooms and schools, not just here in Mid Canterbury but across New Zealand, to fall into poor conditions and deteriorate. I’m incredibly proud to be a part of a Government that places children and young people at the heart of policy. At the same time we also recognise the importance of quality learning spaces and facilities and the impact that this has on learners’ experiences. It doesn’t stop there though. Since coming into Government we’ve not only approved 1500 new teaching places and started work on building or rebuilding 200 new classrooms, but we’ve gotten our teeth into some of the biggest reforms in education that New Zealand has seen. This includes our review into Tomorrow’s Schools, the NCEA Review, our Early Learning
Strategic Plan and our reform of Vocational Education. We need our education sector and system to be strong, responsive, and we need both to provide certainty to learners, teachers parents, employers and communities. I’m both excited and humbled to be a part of a Government that is redefining the way our children and young people interact with the education system, from cradle to grave and from here in Ashburton to Northland. Every New Zealander, in every corner of the country and from every walk of life, deserves access to quality education. That is how we make sure everybody can realise their full potential. Married At First Sight – that show
T
he ratings are high and social media is full of it. Married at First Sight (MAFS) is a television series in which total strangers are put together by so-called experts and married. A low view of marriage indeed. Every episode has its share of conflict, abuse, anger and shouting with the ever present tension of possible marital break up. No doubt a lot of it is staged to keep the ratings high. It can be called “reality“ television but there is a much better reality which produces long lasting marriages. Jesus said, “what God has
joined together, let no one separate”. We are to have great compassion for people with marriage and relationship difficulties and try to help in any way possible. However the words of Jesus are our ideal. MAFS makes no attempt to show the devastation that can follow marriage break ups, for everyone including children. We want marriages to last and not be casually broken up.
Sometimes Christians have presented marriage wrongly. The husband is not the boss. The Bible says a husband “must love his wife as he loves himself” and husbands are to “love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her”. Maybe hard to do. But a long way from the selfishness and taking offence over trivia that we see on MAFS. Our western culture can be selfish and materialistic. Some overseas cultures seem to have a healthier concept of marriage and relationships than our own. MAFS does nothing to correct this, it trivialises marriage. Putting
two beautiful but selfish people together in a marriage equals disaster. Attitudes are critical. It might be better to start with these magnificent words, “Love is patient, love is kind ... it always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres”. Minister on the evening news and seeing the coverage. How frustrating and disappointing to see that neither TV1 nor TV3 had any mention of it in their 6pm bulletins. What does it take for the larger media organisations to notice what is happening in the regions – a tourist peeing in a bush! TV3 did show a short clip of the Prime Minister at Ashburton
College, however the item was about Shane Jones being naughty. How often does the Prime Minister, Minister of Education and our very own staunchly supportive MP, Jo Luxton, stop at the only high school in a town and announce a $50 million dollar upgrade? Seriously, the total ignoring of such an amazing announce-
ment for a town our size is disgusting by the two main evening news providers. Well done to the team at the Guardian for being proactive and having photos on your website on the day of the announcement and may the fleas of a thousand camels infect the armpits of the producers of TV1 and TV3. Fonterra jobs go in shakeup
Jobs have been lost at Fonterra but New Zealand’s biggest company won’t say how many as its major internal business review and debt reduction drive rolls on. Responding to Herald questions about the effects so far of its “back to basics” programme on jobs and organisation structure, a spokesman said there were “some redundancies” as part of recently confirmed organisational changes. Asked how many, the written response was: “No, this is not about numbers. It’s about teams working more efficiently together, which is why some new roles have also been created.” The website of the milk processor and global dairy exporter says it employs 22,000 people worldwide. The company, which last year posted a historic first annual net loss of $196 million and debt of $6.2 billion, said if there had been significant or material changes as part of the review it would have announced them to the market. Fonterra, owned by 10,000-or so dairy farmers, has non-voting, dividend-carrying units in farmer
shares listed on the sharemarket. New chief executive Miles Hurrell recently said the company was making good progress on its review and asset divestments to fulfil a pledge to reduce debt by $800m this financial year. All eyes will be on the company on Wednesday when it announces

its interim financial results. It is also expected to announce some firm asset sale plans. Market watchers aren’t optimistic the half year news will be positive given last month’s announcement no interim dividend will be paid and a decision on any full-year dividend could only be
made at the end of the financial year and would depend on the cooperative’s full-year earnings and balance sheet position. However new chairman John Monaghan at the same time announced a lift in the milk price forecast to be paid to farmers this dairy season, again highlighting
the tension Fonterra’s current structure creates between the share price and the milk price. As a farmer-owned co-operative its reason-for-being is to pay its farmer-owners the maximum possible through the annual milk price. But it is also trying to function as a corporate commercial enterprise and pay dividends. It has had no formal earnings retention policy to shore up the balance sheet when big-ticket outlays and overseas investment losses happen as they have been in recent years. Fonterra’s share price has fallen more than 20 per cent since its stretched balance sheet became public last year. An immediate imperative for Monaghan and Hurrell is to retain Fonterra’s credit ratings to avoid higher interest costs on its borrowings, which at the end of the July 2018 financial year were $6.2b. Fitch Ratings earlier this month put Fonterra on a “negative” outlook while retaining, for now, its “A” long-term credit rating. - NZME
US billionaire Ric Kayne plans two new golf courses He’s already spent an estimated $100 million creating one of the world’s best golf courses in New Zealand. Now American billionaire Ric Kayne plans to spend a further $50m-plus developing two new public courses north of Auckland. Kayne, working with Queenstown-based landscape architect John Darby of Darby Partners and world-class golf course designer Tom Doak, developed the private links-style, invitation-only Tara Iti course near Mangawhai, 80 minutes north of Auckland. It’s the course where ex-President Barack Obama played last March with former-Prime Minister John Key. Now Kayne plans to build two new beachfront links-style courses on land adjacent to and south of Tara Iti, on part of a 764ha block of land he wants state consent to lease for more than a century from the Ngati Manuhiri iwi. He proposes that 200ha goes to Auckland Council to extend existing reserve areas, having already gifted 200ha of land at Tara Iti as a reserve. Kayne also plans to create visitor accommodation, a clubhouse, 60 new lots for homes, a public camping ground near the beach and a retail centre for food and surfing shops. Kayne said: “The wider vision is now for the adjacent 700ha Mangawhai South Forest. “Ngati Manuhiri is partnering with Kayne and Darby Partners on a similar development. The goal is to create a significant recreational, economic and environmental asset for Auckland and New Zea-
Ric Kayne on the site of two planned new public golf courses. land.” Mook Hohneck, chairman of the Ngati Manuhiri Settlement Trust, confirmed negotiations were under way for part of the 764ha the tribe bought as part of its Treaty settlement, but says some land has been sold and part is already reserve. “We’re discussing with Kayne to lease part of the land which the settlement trust owns, to fulfil the tribal aspirations, both commercial and cultural. We want to realise the potential for the land. Because of our size and commercial capability, we see it as advantageous to have secure relationships with strategic partners, built on trust, honesty and goodwill. “This provides the platform for the trust to proceed with their
commitment to achieve the tribal long term aspirations. To date, we have always had a good relationship with both Ric Kayne and John Darby,” Hohneck said. Kayne says the area would be turned into a “world golfing destination”, with the member-only Tara Iti to the north and the two new 18-hole public courses to the south, all along a strip of golden sand beach facing Little Barrier Island [Te Hauturu-o-Toi] and the Hen and Chicken Islands [two main islands, Marotere and Taranga]. Kayne says he had no profit motive in developing Tara Iti but he does plan to make the next stage pay. “We will make a dollar from the operation of the golf club with visitors.” - NZME

AshColl facing uphill battle Ashburton College’s first XI are set to take to the field for the final day of their Canterbury youth first XIs twoday match against Christchurch Boys’ High School’s (CBHS) second XI in Ashburton today, weather permitting. The visitors had a strong day one at the Ashburton Domain last weekend, all out for 194 with Mackenzie Smith top scoring with 52 and Kobe Beecroft adding 47, while for the home side Tom Middleton took 3/28. In reply, Ashburton College lost regular wickets on their way to being all out for 111 off 50.5 overs, with Jonty Small the top runs scorer on 21. So long as the forecast rain stays away, CBHS will send their batsmen out for their second innings when play gets under way today. There’s still one more game for the Ashburton College first XI after today, and that’s their final two-day game against St Thomas of Canterbury first XI, over the next two Saturdays. Meanwhile the Ashburton College
Combined XI took on Christchurch Boys’ High School’s fifth XI and lost by six wickets last weekend. The Ashburton College side was dismissed for 142 with Lachie Jemmett top scoring with 47, followed by Sam Reilly-Segil’s 26. CBHS reached the target in 29 overs, with Jack Middleton the best of the bowlers with 2/8 off four overs. This weekend the combined side is off to Bower Park in Christchurch to take on Shirley Boys’ High School’s second XI in their final game of the season. Meanwhile it’s semi-finals time in the Canterbury Country Year 9 and 10 competition, with top of the table Mid Canterbury Methven District hosting Rangiora High School in Methven this afternoon. The Selwyn’s Malvern Lions host Leeston-Southbridge in the other semi-final at Darfield, while Mid Canterbury Ashburton District – which only joined the competition for the second half of the season, heads to Lincoln to play Selwyn’s Lincoln Lions.

Third test abandoned The third cricket test between the Black Caps and Bangladesh in Christchurch has been called off after a shooting at a nearby mosque yesterday. The shooting happened just minutes away from Hagley Oval, where the test was set to be held, and the Bangladesh cricket team narrowly avoided the incident, having to flee the scene. The team had just arrived at the Al Noor Mosque for Friday prayer when a gunman opened fire, with video showing several Bangladeshi players and media escaping the scene. “We’ve cancelled the game. “I’ve spoken to my counterpart at Bangladesh cricket – we agree it’s inappropriate to play cricket at this time,” said NZ Cricket CEO David White. White said New Zealand Cricket were shocked and appalled by what had unfolded. “Both teams are deeply affected. “As a country we’ll have to look at [security of visiting teams]. “It seemed to be a safe haven. I’m sure all of New Zealand will take a look at their approach.” Mohammad Isam, a Bangladeshi journalist for Cricinfo who was on the scene, said that all the players are safe, but want to fly back to Bangladesh. “I don’t think they’re in a mental state to play cricket at all. “I think they want to go back home as soon as possible. “I’m speaking from experience, I’m speaking from what I’ve heard. Isam described the scenes. “When that was happening, one of the players had called me to contact the police. I’m new in Christchurch, I didn’t know who to contact. I just got in someone’s car and just we went near that place and it was very traumatic. “It was very traumatic there and people
were running out from that mosque presumably, and the Bangladesh players were coming out. “They (the players) are in terrible and severe mental [distress], they’re not feeling well. “They were just outside the mosque about to get off from the bus and go into the mosque when they heard shooting and a lot of people running out and they saw someone wounded in front of them. “And seeing that, they didn’t get off the bus. About ten minutes later they ran out of the bus and ran through Hagley Park and into the Hagley Oval.” Bangladesh Cricket confirmed that all their team members are now safely back in the team hotel. Bangladesh’s strength and conditioning coach Mario Villavarayen said the players were shaken up. “I spoke to one of them shortly after [the incident]. “They didn’t see anything but heard gunshots. They were at the ground [Hagley Oval] and just started running. A member of the Black Caps staff told the Herald the team were having an optional training session at Lincoln, about 30 minutes away from Hagley Oval. A Black Caps spokesman told the Herald nine of the team members live in Christchurch and are currently at home with their families. The players have been told to stay indoors and a planned meeting at the team hotel was cancelled. New Zealand Cricket have also been in contact with members of the Australian under-19 women’s team, who are also in Christchurch. According to a spokesman, the players from all the teams are safe and accounted for. This is the first time a test held in New Zealand has been called off. - NZME

‘Home track’ for Signify Alex “Snookie” Cowan is claiming home track advantage for today’s Listed Gavelhouse.com Lightning Handicap (1200m) at Trentham. The Ashburton trainer will produce Signify in the sprint feature at the Wellington Racing Club meeting some 542km away from his actual home base. But such is Signify’s record at Trentham, Cowan reckons it’s like playing a home game. “It’s like a home track for him. “He loves the place and that’s the number one reason we’re here,” said Cowan, who trains Signify for his wife Tracey. In four races at Trentham, Signify has won the 2017 Gr.1 Telegraph (1200m) and the Lightning Handicap later that year before an unplaced Telegraph run last year and a gallant third placing in this year’s running. “He travelled to Wellington on

Mid Canterbury’s tennis champions for the 2018/19 season are set to be crowned this weekend. Will someone add to their title tally, or will there be a new winner? The Guardian’s Erin Tasker takes a look at the weekend ahead.

An ace gunning for his 10th title and a new kid on the block are the favourites to battle it out for the title of Mid Canterbury’s top tennis player this weekend. It’s Gala Cup weekend, and the 2018/19 instalment of the annual Mid Canterbury Tennis championships is shaping up to be a cracker. Rhys Cromie heads into the tournament as the defending champion, with his victory a year ago being the ninth time the engravers have had to etch his name into the silverware, but he has one heck of battle on his hands if he’s to take his title tally to double figures this season. Cameron McCracken has been one of North Canterbury’s top players in recent years, but this season he has switched his tennis allegiance to Mid Canterbury,
and has really made his presence felt. So much so that he heads into the weekend as the tournament’s top seed, with Cromie having to settle for the second seed tag. When McCracken and Cromie last met on the tennis court on February 16 McCracken came out on top 6-4 7-5, but when they clashed on December 1 last year it was Cromie who won a serious battle, 10-8 in the third set super tie-break. For both players, those losses are the only ones each of them has suffered in the Mid Canterbury A grade tennis competition so far this season. If the seedings go to plan this weekend, they’ll face off against each other for the third time this season, tomorrow afternoon in the Gala Cup A grade men’s singles final. But there’s a few other players in
the mix who are more than capable of producing the kind of form which could take them to the final instead. Flynn Ness, who won the Gala Cup in 2017, is back for another shot at getting his name on the cup and is the tourney’s third seed, while a couple of other talented young players, Sam Bubb and Eddie Dargue, are seeded fourth and fifth. The experienced Jason Feutz is seeded sixth and Connor Brosnahan is seeded seventh, while Tyler Leonard is seeded eighth. To get to the final, those players will have to win three games in a draw of 18 players, but none of them will have it easy. McCracken will face the winner of Gareth Evans versus Mathieu Lucas in his first match, and if seedings go to plan he’ll then play Brosnahan in the quarters, and Ness in the semis.
Cromie will take on Bryn Looij in his first match, and if seedings go to plan in the bottom half of the draw he will play Dargue in the quarters and Bubb in the semis. Competition is set to be tight in the women’s draw too, although the draw is a lot smaller. Defending champion Tessa McCann headlines what will be a battle of the young guns, with Jade Brosnahan and Ashleigh Leonard rounding out a three-player round robin draw. It’s a similar story in the women’s doubles, with three pairings set to battle it out. McCann is joined by Larissa Allan, while Jade Brosnahan will pair up with her sister Christal Brosnahan, and Ashleigh Leonard will combine with her mum Dianna Leonard. Eleven pairings make up the men’s A grade doubles, with Cro-
mie and Peter Leonard the top seeds and McCracken and Andre van Rooyen second seeds. There’s five teams vying for the mixed doubles title, with father and daughter Neil and Tessa McCann the top seeds, and another father-daughter pairing – Ashleigh and Peter Leonard – the second seeds. A reserve players will also be vying for honours this weekend, with Jake Parsons the top seed for the men’s singles and Ollie Bubb the second seed, while the men’s doubles will be played as a fourteam round robin. Ollie Bubb and Ryan Watt will be the top seeds, with Riley Breen and Parsons the second seeds. It was set to be a straight final in the A reserve women’s singles, with Ilapaula Cabalse and Grace Austin the only entries, and that game was due to be played last night.

In brief City facing transfer ban Manchester City will reportedly be banned from making signings in the next two transfer windows by FIFA for breaking rules related to the protection of youth players and third-party ownership. The club is already being investigated by the Football Association and Premier League for allegations related to youth transfers and financial fair play rules, with the latter also of interest to European governing body UEFA. Cycling title on the line Mid Canterbury honours will go on the line in the final race of the Tinwald Cycling Club’s road programme for the summer today. While the club’s weekly races were held on Sundays throughout the summer, the big one – the season-ending Mid Canterbury Championships – were held on Saturdays, meaning that today, the roads of Wakanui will be transformed into a cycling battlefield. Just who will finish the season on top though, was just about anyone’s guess, with a number
of riders having shown in recent weeks that they were capable of producing the type of form that could see them cross the line first today. The race is a 64km handicap event, which will see riders complete four laps of what the club calls the Wakanui Beach block, and because it’s a handicap race all riders are in with a shot of taking it out. But, there are some riders in particular that could be ones to watch in certain marks, should they find the front.
The likes of Gene Shurrock, Gary Weston, Roger Wilson, Shane Brookland and Lucy Kirwan are among those who could be leading contenders to be this year’s Mid Canterbury champion. When it came to the fastest time honours though, Brad Hudson is likely to be the rider to beat for the men, and Kristine Marriott for the women, when racing gets under way at 2pm. Last year, the Mid Canterbury Championships race was won by Pam Harcourt, while last year’s
fastest time honours went to one of Mid Canterbury’s most famous recent cycling exports, former Olympian Hayden Roulston. Meanwhile, the Tinwald Cycling Club’s Whizz Wheelers section – held on the club’s velodrome – has also now wrapped up for the season, with the prizegiving held at the club’s Maronan Road headquarters last night. An end of season prizegiving will also take place at the clubrooms after today’s racing.
In Melbourne Victory’s storm of a season, today’s A-League meeting with Brisbane Roar appears to be the eye of a hurricane. In the past is Asian Champions League disappointment and a six-game winless run. In the future are away trips to league leaders Perth, Sydney FC and Asian giants Guangzhou Evergrande. And this weekend is the visit of the Roar, without a coach or a chance of finals football. Given all that, it’s imperative Victory – not long ago touted as the only hope of preventing a Perth Glory double this season – seizes the chance to get back on the winner’s list, though coach Kevin Muscat says he’s not feeling the pressure. - AAP
Joyce ‘desperate’ If Warren Joyce is entering the final weeks of his Melbourne City tenure as expected, then he’d like to leave Australian shores with the parting gift of an A-League victory over Sydney FC. City, woefully out of form already, face their bogey team at Leichhardt Oval on Sunday, having lost their past seven matches against their Sky Blue rivals. That includes all five under Joyce, with City on a run of conceding 12 straight goals to the reigning premiers. Joyce laughed he was “obviously desperate” to break through on Sunday but to do so he needs to shuffle his playing pack accordingly. Back in the mix are crucial defenders Bart Schenkeveld and Ritchie De Laet (suspension) and Harrison Delbridge (hamstring). Front row of contrasts While All Blacks front rower Owen Franks will play his 150th Super Rugby match for the Crusaders tonight, it’s a different story for his propping partner. George Bower, who made his debut of the bench last weekend, has been given the nod in the No1 jersey for the clash against the Highlanders in Dunedin with Tim Perry and Joe Moody both injured. Franks, who will become just the third Crusader to play 150 games for the club, said while Bower was fresh to the competition, there was no need to offer any veteran advice. “Guys, when they get to this level, have played a lot of rugby themselves making their way up and in a week like this they’ve probably got enough on their mind already,” Franks said. “I’m pretty pumped for George. “He’s one of those guys who comes into pre-season and takes every opportunity he gets and deserves his crack this week.” Bower will get his first start in the competition in familiar territory, playing his Mitre 10 Cup football with Otago. Cardiff set for carnage Cardiff is preparing for pandemonium, with Wales’ Six Nations Grand Slam match-day in the city expected to break all records. With Irish supporters travelling in their thousands on 50 extra flights from Dublin, and yet more who have spent the week at the Cheltenham Festival, a record 275,000 people are expected in town. Around 7000 extra passengers will pass through the city’s airport today and Cardiff Council said they are anticipating a throng to rival 2012, when 275,313 people packed the capital as Wales beat France to clinch a clean sweep. - PA

Despite serious assault charges hanging over his head, ex-Melbourne Rebel Amanaki Mafi will return to Super Rugby action for the Sunwolves this weekend. Mafi has been named on the bench for tonight’s clash with the Queensland Reds in Tokyo. The 29-year-old was added to the Sunwolves squad last week despite a court matter after allegedly bashing his thenRebels team-mate Lopeti Timani in Dunedin last year still being dealt with. The No.8 left Melbourne at the end of the year and returned to Japan where he had made 22 test appearances including being part of the Brave Blossoms’ 2015 World Cup squad. - AAP
Another All Black on the way to play rugby in France French club Pau have continued their raid of New Zealand talent after signing Luke Whitelock on a reported three-year deal. The seven test All Blacks No. 8 and Highlanders co-captain will be a somewhat surprising deflection.
The 28-year-old has been knocking on the door of national selection for several years, having made his test debut in 2013. Last year he featured in five tests, including the match in Tokyo where he captained the All Blacks to the 69-31 victory.
With Kieran Read set to join Japanese club Toyota after the World Cup, Whitelock’s strong defensive and lineout abilities would have been in the mix, along with Blues No. 8 Akira Ioane, to replace the All Blacks captain at the back of the scrum.
Reports from France instead suggest that Pau coach Simon Mannix and president Bernard Pontneau have lured Whitelock to join All Blacks fullback and fellow Highlander Ben Smith next season. Smith has signed a seven-month

Mustangs rule Melbourne Scott McLaughlin has won his 50th career qualifying session but not a clean sweep of pole positions at the Australian Grand Prix, denied by Chaz Mostert at Melbourne’s Albert Park. McLaughlin won the first three poles of the meet but was edged out by just eight hundredths of a second in the fourth and final qualifying session by Mostert. The DJR Team Penske man has been utterly rampant in Melbourne and looks set to increase his championship lead in races this weekend. “It would have been cool to be four up but congrats to Chaz and his team,” McLaughlin said. “We’ve got a great car for the races as well and we start from pole three times.” Since entering the sport, McLaughlin has been known as a qualifying ace and this season he’s won four of the first six pole positions on offer. Curiously, he’s won 17 of those poles in car No.33 while at Barry Rogers Motorsport, and 33 in car No.17. The Kiwi also won both races at the Adelaide 500 and with the superior pace of his Mustang, should leave Melbourne with an enhanced lead in the series standings. His fellow Ford drivers dined out on the street circuit designed for Formula One. In race three qualifying, the top four finishers were Mustangs; five of the top six finishers were Mustangs for race four. Yesterday, McLaughlin beat Tickford Racing’s Cam Waters to the qualifying win for race five before Mostert snuck home in race six. Mostert’s strategy of staying in pit lane longer than his rivals paid dividends for his first qualifying win in 18 months.
