Learning life skills through boxing By katie todd

The brains behind the ever-successful Mid Canterbury Boxing Academy stopped by Ashburton on Thursday to see it in action. Four times national boxing champion and international motivational speaker Billy Graham met the young locals benefiting from his unique programme, which uses boxing as a “vehicle to learn life skills”. Graham has founded four boxing gyms around the country aiming to connect young people with mentors, teach them confidence and discipline and help them make the right choices to lead fulfilling and productive lives, and has received recognition from the New Zealand Police and Youth Courts for his work. Mid Canterbury Boxing Academy head coach Cornelius Grobler said Thursday provided a valuable opportunity for young local boxers to spend time with the man who put the vision together. Despite being nearly 70 years old, Graham is very energetic and engaging, he said – and the young boxers love learning new things from him. “Everyone enjoys his company,” he said. “When he came in all the boys lined up and shook his hand – because that kind of respect is

Only eight have chosen to pursue boxing competitively – the remainder enjoying the holistic benefits provided by the programme. “There’s the bag work, and that’s about fitness and self-discipline. When you’re up in the corner of the ring – that helps you deal with pressure. When you’re engaged in combat, that’s about how to use aggression,” he said. A lot of people may see boxing on TV and think it’s about the violence, he said “but that’s not what it’s about here”. The academy is open to all male youth above the age of nine.

The unfiltered ideas of Mid Canterbury youngsters made an impression on Ashburton District Councillors charged with breathing new life into the town’s central business district. Council is currently seeking feedback on its plan to revitalise the CBD and the representatives of nine Mid Canterbury schools took the opportunity to push for colour in what they universally considered a dull and bland space. Chair of the town centre working group councillor Diane Rawlinson said their views were refreshing and timely, as the deadline for feedback on the plans was next Friday. Council is proposing a range of changes which could include reduced speed zones and free timerestricted parking. Rawlinson said it was clear that young people also wanted more colour and street art that encompassed the district’s growing cultural diversity. She said the project was excit-

ing as it would also include council’s new civic centre and library building on Baring Square East. “It is obvious we have a lot to think about and this is our opportunity to include those aspects.” Highlights of the students’ presentations Ashburton Intermediate School: More rubbish bins, more seating, more culturally diverse restaurants or food trucks, fix footpaths, tidy some buildings, mural or graffiti walls, family attractions, like mini golf. Netherby School: More colour in the CBD as it is dull and bland, flags of our different cultures, seating that could be painted in school colours, more fairy lights, street art, a spruce-up for the chessboard. Ashburton College: A street of lights, a walking street, shared space with concrete table tennis tables, street art and sculpture t from local artists, free wi-fi, a digital noticeboard. Businesses to attract: Laserstrike, 10 pin bowling, ice cream and gelato, roof top bar, Kmart. Borough School: Areas to focus

on should be gardens, arts and entertainment spaces. The town should showcase its culture and heritage, with focus on farming and braided rivers, to create an identity. St Joseph’s: Clean and safe family areas, picnic tables, nature walk information, billboards to showcase farming and agriculture, colour in the gardens and buildings. Mt Somers Springburn: Shared and free space to have lunch when rural people visit town, a trampoline park, a scooter road, street art and water refill stations. Hampstead School: Make some streets one-way, more LED lights, an artists’ corner, smokefree, kinetic art and busking. Our Lady of the Snows: Attract new businesses like Toyworld, create a kids’ chill-out hub, make the whole area a plastic bag-free zone. Lauriston: Make Ashburton a destination, rather than a place to pass through, murals, a mini maze in the domain, an indoor playground and competitions like Design Junkies.

Wakanui’s loss is Borough’s gain By Katie todd

There will soon be a new face at the helm of Ashburton’s biggest primary school, and she’s no stranger to the local education scene. Hillary Boyce will be wrapping up 10-and-a-half years as the much-loved principal of Wakanui School, and taking on a new challenge at Ashburton Borough School from term 4 this year. Boyce has previously worked as principal of Borough’s satellite school, Lagmhor School, before it merged with Borough in 1998, and will replace Sam Winterbourn, who has been Borough’s principal for the past 23 years. Boyce said she is looking forward to getting to know Borough’s students and families. “There’s a lot of potential at Borough, with the two sites and the IB [International Bachalaurette] programme,” she said. “I’m really happy to be going back.” In a letter to Borough’s families, Ashburton Borough School Board of Trustees chairperson Mark Cook said that Boyce was selected because she has the skill, knowledge and experience to lead our school forward in this

fast-changing world. She has also been the lead principal for the Hakatere Community of Learning, and knows a fair bit about what goes on at other schools, she said. “And I’m looking forward to the urban location, because there’s a lot to be involved in – the library, the swimming complex … I live in town, so I might even walk to work each day,” Boyce said. However, her departure from Wakanui will not be without a lot of sadness and tears, she said – with one student already writing a card pleading her to stay. “I don’t want to leave, because it’s a fantastic community out here, and I’m really attached to the students and families,” she said. “But it’s about what’s good for the school, and creating the best outcomes for the kids. And I think it’s time for Wakanui to have some fresh eyes.” Winterbourn will be departing Ashburton Borough School at the end of this term, and deputy principal Anne Porter will fill in as acting principal until Boyce commences her role. Wakanui School is due to begin advertising for a new principal in the near future.

Ashburton’s top cop to share road safety tips and tricks By Katie todd

Driving around New Zealand’s roads can take a bit of getting used to – but what better way to pick up tips and tricks, than from our local top cop himself? Senior Sergeant Phil Dean will deliver an information session on New Zealand’s road rules and policing next week.

Organised by The Citizens Advice Bureau, the event is open to anyone who is interested in the topic, but specifically hoped to help newcomers to New Zealand or the Ashburton area. Dean said he will be covering aspects like seatbelts and road signs, as well as a general introduction to policing in New Zealand, and other important laws.

He will also be talking about winter driving hazards like ice on the road, which many newcomers will not have encountered before, he said. The seminar will take place from 10.30am to noon on Monday at Ashburton Seniors Centre on Cameron Street. Attendees will also receive a light lunch and a certificate.

Bird bonanza comes to town BY KATIE TODD

Clucks and crows echoing onto Tancred Street heralded the opening of the Ashburton Fanciers’ Society annual show yesterday. More than 800 ducks, poultry, bantams and pigeons have taken residence in the Ashburton Sports Hall for one of New Zealand’s biggest shows of its kind. Yesterday morning, judges cast their keen eyes over the entries to select the honours, medals and award certificates winners, and at 2pm, the doors were opened to the public. The event will also be open from 1pm today, with a number of rabbits and guinea pigs expected to join from this morning and also go under the scrutiny of judges. Ashburton Fanciers’ Society Secretary-Treasurer Brian Glassey said this year’s entries were definitely up to standard. Despite no cats and limited numbers of rabbits and guinea pigs in this year’s show, there were good numbers of each bird breed, and an extensive sale section – providing something for everyone, he said. Glassey, the star of the 2017 Kiwi documentary Pecking Order, had entered 45 of his own prize birds in the show and was hoping to sweep up some awards himself. The Fanciers’ Society has held shows every year since they were founded in 1892.

Arrest after chase A teenage girl was arrested after police used road spikes to stop her car in the Bay of Plenty yesterday. A police spokeswoman said the 18-year-old failed to stop for police on Te Ngae Road in Rotorua about 9.30am. Police units were called in to stop her. Officers successfully used road spikes when the fleeing car arrived in Paengaroa. The girl was arrested and was currently being spoken to by police. Traffic in the area was stopped and diverted for a time. - NZME

A prominent New Zealand entertainer has appeared in court following an alleged family violence incident. The man, who has interim name suppression, was charged with injuring with intent on Thursday. The alleged victim is a woman. The man was held in police custody overnight before appearing before Judge Pippa Sinclair in the North Shore District Court yesterday. He did not enter a plea and was bailed to return to court next month. - NZME

A cup of tea and a Kiwi cheese roll were on the menu for 55 new New Zealand citizens in Ashburton yesterday. The new citizens came from 14 different countries and have made their homes in the Ashburton District. Mayor Donna Favel congratulated them on making New Zealand their country now. Some had lived in the district for years and others not so long, but all pledged their allegiance as Kiwis yesterday in a group citizenship ceremony at the Ashburton Event Centre. It was a special occasion shared by their families and supporters. Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon joined five other district councillors in welcoming the new citizens, who were all presented with

certificates of their new status and memorial kowhai trees to plant. The largest group of new citizens were Filipino (12), followed by Samoan (11), and British (7). Favel said becoming a New Zealand citizen was an important step and their diverse cultures helped enrich Kiwis’ own culture and history. Skifield set for big influx Mt Hutt Skifield is gearing up for weekend warriors who will hit their slopes today and tomorrow. The skifield opened a week ago for the 2018 season with a base of 30cm and locals and visitors have been enjoying the conditions. The mountain was shrouded in cloud for the early part of the week, but sunshine on Thursday and yesterday had skiers and snowboarders smiling. The Metservice is predicting settled weather with fine weather and high cloud today at the top of Mt Hutt, with some cloud in the picture tomorrow. While rain will fall on the West Coast, the east will be mostly fine. Further north, the All Blacks game against France will be in cool 13 degree temperatures, with a chance of a shower during the game. Meteorologists are keeping a close eye on developments in the north Tasman Sea where they are expecting a low to develop which could potentially go on to impact New Zealand next week.

Chopper crash victim dies A man in his 40s has died after Thursday’s helicopter crash near Waiouru. He was in a critical condition in Hawke’s Bay Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit as a result of injuries he suffered in the helicopter crash. The family have asked for privacy but said: “He was a hugely loved husband, father and brother, and much loved by all his wider family and friends. His death is a tragic loss not only to his family but the wider farming community, and to all those who knew and loved him.” Two men, one in his 40s and the other in his 30s, remain in a serious but stable condition. Two other men did not need hospital treatment. The Hughes MD600N helicopter was undertaking a commercial survey operation

in the area, when at 8.50am, Rescue Co-ordination Centre NZ received an alert from the ELT distress beacon on board, providing a location at Oturua Stream. RCCNZ Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator Dave Wilson said another helicopter from the same company was initially sent to provide a fast, initial response to determine the situation, with the Greenlea Rescue Helicopter from Taupo arriving on scene soon after to provide medical care. Greenlea Rescue Helicopter pilot Nat Every said they were the first helicopter on the scene by about 40 minutes. The Transport Accident Investigation Commission sent three investigators to the crash site and has opened an inquiry. The chief investigator of accidents, Captain Tim Burfoot, said the helicopter was extensively damaged in the crash. - NZME

Attack dogs euthanised The two Rottweilers who mauled autistic man Oliver Beaumont in Winton on Sunday have been euthanised. A Southland District Council spokesperson said the two dogs were euthanised by a vet yesterday. The owners of the dogs had voluntarily surrendered them and had been co-operative in the process. Southland District Council group manager environmental services Bruce Halligan said information was still being gathered on the attack on 22-year-old Winton man Oliver Beaumont, who suffered injuries. The council was yet to make a decision on whether further action would be taken under the Dog Control Act, and no decision would be made until statements from everyone involved had been received, Halligan said. Beaumont suffered severe gashes to his face and puncture wounds on his arm before one of his neighbours and an off-duty police officer managed to halt the attack. He was transported to Southland Hospital where he underwent surgery on Sun-

day night, but was back with his family in Winton by Monday. The partner of the owner of one of the two Rottweilers told The New Zealand Herald earlier this week the “lovely” dogs were not at fault, alleging Beaumont opened his gate and entered his property before the attack. “I am sorry for what has happened, but we are not bad owners and they are not bad dogs. They were protecting their home like all normal dogs would.” The suggestion that Beaumont, who suffers from autism, had entered the property was rejected by his father Chris. “Oliver has always been afraid of dogs as he was attacked three years ago by a similar breed of dog. “These dogs make ... noise whenever anyone walks past. “There’s no way Oliver would even go near those dogs, let alone open the gate.” A video of the attack supplied to Stuff appeared to show the attack taking place in the gravel road Beaumont was walking on, not in the yard containing the dogs. - NZME

‘You’re a psycho’: Man wields tyre lever in road rage incident A man allegedly high on drugs, who drove at 50km/h in reverse down a Dunedin street as he pursued another vehicle in a road-rage incident on Thursday, remains at large. Speaking on condition of anonymity, a woman who was travelling in the vehicle subjected to the man’s late-morning rage said the incident began shortly after 11am, in Columba Ave, Calton Hill. As she travelled down the narrow street in a ute, accompanied by her fiance and another person, the man in a red Mazda Familia hatchback approached their vehicle “in the middle of the road”, she said. When the man pulled alongside their ute, he stopped his car, then reversed down the street at speeds of up to 50km/h in an apparent backwards pursuit. He then spun his vehicle around and continued following their ute towards the Southern Motorway, heading north, she said. As both vehicles reached Lookout Point,

Concerns about on-farm

he Mid Canterbury farming community has been under the pump in recent months, with mycoplasma bovis adding to issues such as a negative public perception over the impact of agriculture on the environment and additional costs related to increasing compliance demands. That’s ratcheted up the pressure on some farmers, and there are growing concerns as to how that will affect them, particularly those who, through no fault of their own, have seen their stock loaded on to trucks and carted away to be destroyed. It was feared the associated feelings of uncertainty and helplessness, or perhaps a feeling of failure – which in some cases was compounded by a lack of access to information or frustration over compensation payouts – that was being felt by those caught up in what can only be described as a very real nightmare may push some close to the edge. Fortunately, the Rural Support Trust network, including the Mid Canterbury trust, swung into action, and has done a sterling job, being a crucial facilitator between farmers and the experts and services that are there to help them. The trusts also have access to trained facilitators who can support farmers with some of the issues they are facing. farmers to understand how to manage stress, adding that when people are under pressure the things that go out the window are often the things that keep them well. “Things like socialising with other people, exercise, nutrition, continuing to learn, contributing to the community. “That’s often your off-farm stuff but it could also be on-farm, like taking the kids eeling or for a motorbike ride.” However, it’s also important to build in recovery and break time to get away from the farm, where all the stress triggers are, Donaldson said. Whether that’s hunting, a girls’ or boys’ night out, a movie, team or kids sport, it provides respite and often a sense of perspective.

“Building in those activities is really important,” she said. “Those are the things that give us more coping space. And keep us on top of life.” Farmers are often characterised as being the strong, silent types but Donaldson said being able to talk about problems was also very important. “If you are struggling to cope with stress, that’s when it’s good to talk about it.” She recommended trying to surround yourself with people who are upbeat and pragmatic, those able to give you a different perspective. That can change the way you look at a situation. “Connections with family and friends, professionals and your community, are a big part of staying well,” she said. “Everybody needs to be able to call on extra resources from time to time. “The businesses or people that are thriving are often the ones that use those support networks and aren’t afraid to say when they are stuck and to look for another perspective. These people may see options you can’t.” Although times are changing, Donaldson said there is still a lot of stigma and misunderstanding that makes it hard for people to let oth-

ers know when they are struggling. She said the words “mental health” were scary to some people, who saw it reflecting a personal fault or failure. “Some people may resist asking for help because they think or fear others will see them as weak. “The reality is we all have mental health, just as we all have physical health. When we have good mental health we are emotionally okay, feel in control, have energy, think clearly and are connected with others. “Yet just as we get help when we have an infection or physical injury, we should do the same with our mental health.” Being proactive about personal health is a strength, Donaldson said, and the earlier that gets done the better the outcome. “These days a resilient farmer is one who adapts to change, is ready for change and is proactive and ready to learn. “A resilient farmer is also someone who’s not afraid to ask for help when they need it,” she said, echoing a message being delivered by farmer, author and rural mental health advocate Doug Avery.

WHAT IS STRESS?

Stress is a normal physical response to changes or events that make you feel threatened or upset. When you sense danger – whether it’s real or imagined – the body’s natural defences automatically kick into high gear; this is known as a “fight or flight” reaction, or stress response. It’s the body’s way of protecting you from harm. This response helps you to stay focused, energetic, and alert, improving your ability to respond intuitively to a situation, for example, being able to slam on your brakes to avoid an accident or keeping you on your toes when you are kicking a game-winning conversion. The danger lies in too much stress or stress over a long time. Beyond a certain point, stress stops being helpful and starts causing damage to your health, your mood, your productivity, your relationships, and the quality of your life. Everyone experiences and deals with stress in different ways.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE WARNING SIGNS OF STRESS? Every person has a different reaction to stress, here are some of the more common warning signs that it’s time to manage your stress and consider getting help: ■ Loss of enjoyment and interest in activities usually enjoyed. ■ Loss of energy and constant tiredness. ■ Persistent worrying about little things. ■ Changes in sleeping patterns: sleeping difficulties despite physical exhaustion, or sometimes sleeping too much. ■ Indigestion or stomach upsets. ■ Muscle tension and pains (for example, lower back, chest, shoulders, joints, nervous “twitches” or muscle spasms). ■ Skin itches or rashes for no apparent reason. ■ Frequent sickness (for example, cold, flu and stomach bugs).

Shortness of breath or shallow breathing. Memory or concentration problems. Doing risky or careless things (excessive drinking, gambling, drug use). Continuous feelings of anxiousness and tension for no obvious reason. Feeling irritable, impatient or teary with no apparent reason. Finding it hard to make decisions and concentrate. A sad mood that will not go away despite good things happening. Loss of appetite or overeating. Isolation by avoiding people, places and events.

WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT STRESS In some instances you may be able to remove the cause of stress. However, it is not always practical to change your workplace, where you live, or your relationships – but you can manage your body’s reaction to stress by learning new ways to manage or cope differently. What you do may make the difference. Here are some ways to help manage stress: ■ Talk about your worries: Spend time with someone you trust. Talk to a friend, partner, parents, counsellor or clergy. Talk to your mates, you might be surprised to find out that they are or have experienced similar difficulties. ■ Limit your expectations: Be selective and use your energy to do the most important and achievable tasks. Set goals you can reach. Do not blame yourself if you don’t reach all your goals, these may be possible next time. ■ Eat well: Eat a variety of fresh foods in a balanced diet. Some foods actually cause increased tension, for example, coffee, tea, chocolate, alcohol and soft drinks. These are foods we crave when we are stressed so be aware and try to limit your intake of them. ■ Make time to exercise, take

time out, and spend time with family and friends: Make some time (three times a week minimum) for exercise such as walking, swimming or something you enjoy. Give yourself a breather now and then. Get away from the farm for a few hours or a day: Spend time with family/whanau and friends or find ways of meeting new friends. Organise your work habits: Get up five or 10 minutes earlier so you don’t have to rush; break large projects down into more manageable smaller tasks. Spend five to 10 minutes at the end of the day preparing for the next day. This helps you gain control of your life. Solve problems: Try to find a solution to conflict; learn to be more assertive and say NO. Get sufficient sleep: To help sleep, take a walk in the evening, practice relaxation, make your bedroom a sleeping space only (remove the TV). Put fun and laughter in your life: This has proven to be good for health and it makes you feel good.

If you or someone you know is experiencing high and persistent levels of stress and would like further information or support, talk to your doctor about how you are feeling. Your doctor will let you know what options are available. “When you are working by yourself, as many farmers are, it is important to get off the farm – go to the bach or play sport. I isolated myself and it was the worst thing I did”. Tourist levy a good idea ... on paper I

don’t have a problem with tourists coming to New Zealand being charged for the privilege, especially if that money goes into tourism infrastructure and conservation. The Government yesterday announced plans to introduce a levy on international visitors – except those from Australia and most Pacific Island Forum countries – as a way to better deliver a long-term funding base to support our tourism and conservation sectors. There’s no doubt both those areas could do with more investment, just as long as that is where the money really will end up. Rising tourist numbers visiting some of the more far-flung spots in the country means the pressure on toilets, carparks and the like is becoming too much

in many areas, especially given these smaller centres have such limited rating bases from which to draw local funding. For that reason, if it’s possible it would make sense for the extra tourism infrastructure funding to be prioritised so the lesser populated areas that are bearing the brunt of increased tourist numbers don’t miss out. It’s also good to see that conservation is earmarked for some of the money. There’s been a bit of debate

lately about whether to charge those from overseas who are accessing attractions like the Great Walks and national parks, given they don’t pay taxes like locals do that go towards the upkeep of those drawcards. On the surface that sounds like it makes perfect sense, but should surcharges on foreigners win support, care will need to be taken at where those prices are set. The last thing we want is to put overseas tourists off the tracks with increased charges and instead divert them to those that don’t. That would merely be shifting the problem rather than solving it. But back to the proposed levy. The plan is for it to be in the region of $25 to $35 and to be collected either as part of a visa fee

or through a proposed Electronic Travel Authority system for those from visa waiver countries. Given how much people from outside Australia and the Pacific Islands will have to pay to come here anyway, that sort of money is not going to put them off. I also like that it’s not being hidden as part of an airline ticket cost. A large number of those visitors come here to experience the New Zealand “great outdoors”, so I can’t see them being put off by the fact they are making an investment in keeping that experience as great as possible. It’s expected that the levy, which if introduced would be implemented in the second half of 2019, would raise between $57-80 million in its first year. Given tourist numbers are expected to increase to 5.1 mil-

lion annually by 2025, up from about 3.7 million last year, it’s imperative that we spend more to ensure that when they get here, those visitors don’t go away disappointed because natural attractions have been over-run. Building a reputation as a great destination is not easy, but losing that reputation can happen almost overnight, particularly in the age of social media. So what I’m waiting for now is more detail as to where this money will go once it has been collected, and confirmation that it will be additional to, rather than replacing the existing spend in those areas. Otherwise it will be another seemingly good idea that does not achieve what it sets out to because it was never given the chance.

wo boys ran for the door to get to the sandpit first, as the school bell rang out. “Wait!” says their teacher, Queenie Kahui Ako or Mrs A. as a lot of children called her. “I haven’t said you could go, come back and sit down.” Tronald (full name Tronald Dump) gave Skim (full name Skim Song Sill) a push to the door and raced back to the mat, sitting up and trying to look angelic. Mrs A. wasn’t having a bar of it and sent Tronald back to the door and told him to walk to the mat, sit down and use his “safe hands” while doing so. Skim managed to sneak in a tongue poking out to Tronald while he was doing this. Mrs A. let the rest of the class go and then dismissed the two boys, who ran again to the door. Mrs A. sighed, she didn’t have the energy to make them come back, picked up her phone and headed to the staff room. Outside Tronald, who was bigger, made it to the sandpit first and grabbed the last truck that was available. Skim arrived and disappointedly looked for a vehicle to play with. His mother had taught him that if he couldn’t get what he wanted, he should ask to take turns with someone. She had also taught him to ask questions when he wasn’t sure

about something. In reality he had learned that if he took something directly from someone who wasn’t going to tell a teacher, he could have it. So Skim headed straight for Kiwi Kev, a skinny little kid with a bully of a neighbour called Ozzy Doneunder. Ozzy thought it was funny when other kids picked on Kiwi and this time was no exception. Skim snatched the truck off Kiwi and headed to the middle of the sandpit, where he sat there like a bullfrog on a stump. Tronald watched this, and initially wasn’t going to get involved, except then he saw that the truck Skim had nicked had a front-end loader on it. Now Tronald had learned from his dad that the best way to get something was to offer someone something that sounded better that what it turned out to be, in exchange for what you wanted. Tronald didn’t have a better truck, but he was sitting in a

corner of the sandpit. Tronald calls out to Skim – “Hey, do you want the best sand in the sandpit Skim?” Skim didn’t answer so Tronald tried again. “Hey Skim, this sand comes with a truck as well.” Now Skim looks up and says, “all the sand is the same”. Tronald replies, “nope, the sand in my corner is deeper and when you drive this truck over it, it doesn’t collapse and your roads stay exactly how you build them”. Well Skim wouldn’t know if the sand was deeper or made better roads but it sounded good so he asked “ok, what do you want for the corner and the truck?” Tronald replied, “I will swap you the corner and the truck for the truck with the front-end loader,” to which Skim thought about and then agreed. And so Tronald moved out of the corner, handed over the truck and sat where Skim had been sitting. For a while the boys played until it became obvious to Skim that the sand was no different. He also noticed that Tronald had made walls around himself, and as he made them he kept pushing them out and having more of the sandpit to himself. Tronald had also managed to take another truck when a kid had gone to get a drink, so now he had two. Skim sat in the corner and

became bitter because he had ended up with a dumb truck and a small amount of sand. Tronald sat in the middle and told everyone how great things were inside his walls, and Kiwi Kev snivelled on the side because he had no truck at all. From a distance Queenie Kahui Ako who was on duty, watched how Skim and Tronald had shared toys. She would give them a sticker for being good. She thought to herself how Kiwi needs to toughen up because every time she saw him he was whingeing about something. And when Tronald and Skim got home, they told their parents what had happened. Tronald’s dad said well done, that’s how life works and he was going to be a great person when he grew up. Skim’s mum said she was proud he had asked questions but sometimes life is not fair. Skim’s dad told him (when his mum couldn’t hear), that if you want something, you just have to take it, and never give up what you have. Peter Livingstone is the principal of Tinwald School. Facade of Labour/Green coalition crumbles A

ny pretence of Jacinda Ardern calling, unchallenged, all the political shots in Aotearoa is now revealed as only paper thin. The plaster beneath is showing. As we understood on the day Winston Peters agreed to join Labour and, very reluctantly, the Greens, in a Coalition of Convenience, when the political chips were down it was Winston, not Jacinda, who had the right either to pick them up and run with them or, alternatively, rubbish them. Thus, this administration has been subject to Winston’s whims since the start and we are well aware of how wayward they can be. So, as Justice Minister Andrew Little arrives on the threshold of Parliament, oozing purpose and persistence, prepared to repeal the Three Strike law initiated by the Act Party in a previous deal with National, Winston Peters steps forward, raises his right arm in denial and Little’s bubble at once bursts and subsides with a sigh. explain how anti violence and all forms of criminality Peter’s party is and thus there can be no question of its reducing the penalty automatically handed out to the inveterate recidivist. Three Strikes should still qualify for a period of incarceration, at the very least. Little is seriously deflated. He sees the Three Strike clause as one of the first that should be removed, as he attempts to review the whole structure of the law and modernise it to meet the demands of now and not then. However, in the face of Winston’s late rejection of his plans, the Justice Minister is powerless. He is obliged, even, to shrug his shoulders in an expression of hopelessness when discussing his predicament with that well-

known media inquisitor, Tova O’Brien. So, as at this time, those of you contemplating a third brush with the law, should be aware you are still likely to finish up behind bars. From the above we can quickly appreciate that although Peters is shortly to become our Acting PM while Ardern is busy bringing into the world another tiny supporter of the Labour Party, to all (those famous), “intents and purposes”, he can claim, already, to be the real PM, as under the dictates of the coalition nothing becomes law unless he and his henchmen agree to it. So his short stint as PM should bring Peters great satisfaction. His position will be openly recognised whereas, normally, few people realise what power he wields off stage. But hey, that’s MMP “democracy” at work! Further development Since the Three Strike fiasco Shane Jones, a well-known heavyweight NZ First MP and Winston’s de facto 2IC, has had some hard-hitting comments to make. One can safely say, Jones is

500g beef mince 2 onions, finely diced 4 cloves garlic 1 sprig rosemary 1 egg Salt and pepper, to taste 2 sprigs fresh thyme or 1t dried thyme 400g can diced tomatoes 1t sugar 500g fettuccine ■ To make the meatballs, place the beef mince, 1 onion, 3 garlic cloves, rosemary and egg into a large bowl. Season with salt and pepper and mix thoroughly. Roll into small balls about the size of a golf ball and set aside in a cool place. ■ Heat oil in a frying pan on medium heat. Place meatballs into the pan, starting at 12 o’clock and work your way clockwise

T , Y N A Volunteer combines her two loves BY M #NVW2018 Thirteen years ago, Ashburton grandmother Dawn Grieve made the decision to combine her two loves – horses and kids – and give back to the Ashburton community. Every Tuesday since, she has grabbed her boots and a lead rope, and headed down to Mid Canterbury Riding for the Disabled (RDA) in Hampstead, Ashburton. Along with around eight other volunteers, Dawn helps to provide therapeutic riding sessions to help local adults and children who live with physical, intellectual and emotional challenges. The sessions are intended to help the riders grow their confidence, independence and selfworth – and there’s no doubting that they work, Dawn said. The most rewarding part she said, is when the “kids do something that they think they couldn’t achieve”. “And it’s also really special when you hear from their teachers that the benefits are spilling into other aspects of their life.” But becoming a volunteer has even more benefits than just that sense of reward, she said. Working alongside other volunteers, you’ll be introduced to a whole new group of likeminded people – and Dawn has

This coming week is National Volunteer Week. People in Mid Canterbury have a good heart. There are many people volunteering informally helping a neighbour, babysitting or dropping off some food to someone who needs it. There are numerous groups where people more formally volunteer like Riding for the Disabled, Red Cross, Birthright, the Art Gallery, Age Concern, IHC, Safer Ashburton, Victim Support, Town Watch, Hospice, Presbyterian Support, Community House Mid Canterbury, Mid Canterbury Children’s Day and Mid Canterbury Animal Shelter. These groups are supported by great volunteers who have a heart for causes, a heart for others and a heart for making our community the great place it is to live and work in.

Tourism Minister Kelvin Davis says that the impact of a proposed levy on tourists and hikes in visa fees and immigration levies are expected to have only a “minimal” impact on tourist numbers. Heartbreaking final text The 22-year-old comedian found murdered in a Melbourne park sent a heartbreaking final message moments before she was killed and her body dumped on a soccer field. Eurydice Dixon was walking through Princes Park in Carlton North, just a few hundred metres from her home, when she pulled out her phone to contact the friend she had left at Flinders Street Station. “I’m almost home safe, HBU [how about you],” she messaged Toby Magnuson on Facebook just after midnight. Dixon, who was in high spirits after a successful comedy gig, had taken the route many times before — but this time, she wouldn’t make it. “She was happy and content. She gave me a hug, blew me a kiss and said she was going for a walk,” Magnuson said. “She was on top of the world because her gig went so well.” Her body was found on a soccer pitch at 2.40am on Wednesday. Police released CCTV images later that day, captured during the childcare student’s walk

Comey was ‘insubordinate’ In a stinging rebuke, the Justice Department watchdog declared Thursday that former FBI Director James Comey was “insubordinate” in his handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation in the explosive final months of the 2016 presidential campaign. But it also found there was no evidence that Comey’s or the department’s final conclusions were motivated by political bias toward either candidate. President Donald Trump had looked to the much-anticipated report to provide a fresh line of attack against Comey and the FBI as Trump claims that a politically tainted bureau tried to undermine his campaign and, through the later Russia investigation, his presidency. He is likely to use the harsh assessment of Comey as validation for his decision to fire him, an act now central to special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into whether the president sought to obstruct justice. Clinton and her supporters, on the other hand, have long complained that she was the one whose election chances were torpedoed by Comey’s investigation announcements about her email practices, in the summer and then shortly before the election. Lawson, Wilson selected Two Ashburton indoor bowlers have been selected to represent the South Island when they clash with their North Island counterparts in Ashburton in August. Fresh off his national triples victory on Thursday, Michael Lawson, along with Grant Wilson, were both named in the ten men and ten ladies sides announced at the completion of the qualifying stage of the national fours yesterday. Lawson will skip the men’s four sides, and will also be the side’s captain, while Wilson will play three for him in the same team. It was a recall for Wilson, who

didn’t play in the side last year, but will this year make his fourth appearance for the island, having played the singles twice and appeared once in a successful men’s fours side. fter a couple of Formula One snooze-fests at Monaco and Canada, I’m sincerely looking forward to this weekend where we have Supercars and the Le Mans 24 Hour roaring into action. The five Kiwis in the V8 series are sitting nicely with Scott McLaughlin and Shane van Gisbergen one and two at the top of the points table, Fabian Coulthard sitting in seventh while Andre Heimgartner and the rapidly-improving Richie Stanaway are 20th and 24th respectively. Two time Le Mans winner, and World Endurance Championship winner, Earl Bamber has been quick in the run up to the biggest endurance race in the world and quite possibly might pick up his third Le Mans 24 Hour title. IndyCar driver Scott Dixon is in a Ford GT40 just days after winning at Texas and would dearly love to win a 24 Hour title to go with his Indy 500 trophy. I don’t need to pump those two races, and the Supercars in particular, up so I suppose I’d better ‘reflect’ on the latest procession, sorry F1 race, and in particular a few comments a number of drivers made post Canada. The race started with a bang, literally, when Lance Stroll decided he didn’t want to share the track with Brendon Hartley and decided to punt him off and up the wall ending both their races. After that mess was tidied up it was well, a bit of a non-event again. It got a bit interesting postrace when winner Sebastian Vettel said it was unfair to say the racing was boring. He won, so for him it’s not boring of course, but he doesn’t have to sit there for an hour plus and watch it from a fan’s perspective. In the words of the great Elvis Presley, “A little less conversation, a little more action, please.” Go the V8s up in Darwin and good luck to Bamber and Dixon at Le Mans, because you can bet your pants there’ll be plenty of action at those two gigs. - NZME

Rakaia coach Wayne Foxcroft reckons his side is in a pretty good position heading into today’s Luisetti Seeds Combined Country Cup rugby final against Waihora. It’s just about the first time this season he’s been able to say that, and really mean it. Rakaia have got to the final without having shown their full hand, thanks to a steady stream of injuries to key players. But those injuries have all come right at the perfect time and apart from a bit of illness, Foxcroft had a fully fit and healthy side to pick and choose from ahead of today’s final at Tai Tapu. Foxcroft knew Waihora were a tough side and rain this week would likely mean a boggy pitch awaited them in Tai Tapu, but whatever both the opposition and the conditions threw at them, Rakaia were ready.

A year ago, Rakaia were in the same position, preparing for a shot at lifting the Combined Country Cup for the first time. But they lost that final against Southbridge by just one point and today they were determined to make amends. Foxcroft said Rakaia had learnt from that experience. They had three players sent to the sinbin that day and knew they couldn’t afford to do that again. Discipline and patience were key. Foxcroft said Rakaia’s game plans so far this season had been working for them, so he wasn’t planning on changing anything radical today. But, they would have something up their sleeves if they were forced to change their game plan due to either the conditions, or what Waihora threw at them. “Our forwards have set a good platform this season, but we do target to get the ball wide because

when everyone’s available, we have some real x-factor out wide,” Foxcroft said. Foxcroft said the game would be won and lost in the forwards. If Rakaia’s forwards could secure their own ball it would give opportunities for their backs to work their magic. It would be an across-the-park effort. “Our senior players need to stand up, like your Andrew Lethams in the backs and Jack (Jackson Donlan) our captain, he’s got to lead from the front,” Foxcroft said. Foxcroft said Rakaia’s best was yet to come. “I don’t think we have played to our potential all year and I don’t think, being a wet pitch, we will be able to play to our full potential either,” Foxcroft said. “It could be this Saturday, I hope it is. But we have still got a lot of potential to play.” A muddy and boggy pitch wasn’t

what Rakaia were used to. Their home ground at the Rakaia Domain had played well this season and Rakaia would need to adapt, but still play their own style. “It may turn it into a forwards battle, back play may be limited, but we will use what we can use,” Foxcroft said. Foxcroft said the Rakaia side which lost both the Combined Country Cup final and the Mid Canterbury Rugby Watters Cup final last year were different. He said last year’s team had better individuals, while this year’s team was better overall. And that, was vital to success. Rugby was a team game and Foxcroft hoped that today that team would come together and finally put together that complete performance that had been just hiding beneath the covers all season and end the day by Donlan holding the Combined Country Cup aloft for the first time.

Waihora and Rakaia will battle it out in wet Rhodes Park in Tai Tapu for the Luisetti Seeds Combined Country Cup. It is Waihora’s fourth combined final hoping to add a second title while Rakaia lost to Southbridge at home last year in their first trip to the big show. Just making the final is an ex-

traordinary feat considering there are 22 teams in the competition, but Waihora and Rakaia proved the top sides in their respective pools and have won through for the chance to be crowned champions. Having both played in a combined final before, they both understand only one team walks away happy. Waihora will be counting on

their experienced heads, boasting plenty of finals experience that coach Joff Mooar hopes that will count when it comes to the crunch. “We have a few wise old heads that have been there and done it before so they know what it’s like, but every game is different,” Mooar said. “Rakaia will bring a massive bit of punch to us so we will really

need to be on our A game. “No one wants to lose a final.” Elsewhere, Lincoln finished seventh with after a 22-12 win over defending champions Southbridge on Thursday night. A new year has brought with it a new seat and a new challenge for Mayfield rower Emma Dyke. When New Zealand Rowing’s women’s eight hits the water in the next two world cup events in Europe over the coming weeks, Dyke will be sitting further back in the boat than she’s become used to in recent years. Dyke had moved from the stroke seat, to six seat, after Rebecca Scown decided to take a break from rowing last year, and it was a move that the 22-yearold had embraced. Dyke said it was easier moving from stroke – the seat directly in front of the coxswain – to six seat, than it would be to move from six to stroke. “Being in the middle four

you’re kind of known as the powerhouse of the boat,” Dyke said. The women’s eight was one of New Zealand Rowing’s newer boats, but they’d certainly been making their presence felt. They caused a boilover at last year’s rowing world championships, beating the USA crew which had dominated the sport for years in their heat, and going on to finish third behind Romania and Canada. But that was the last big race the New Zealand women’s eight have had. Since then it’s been all training, where they’ve gone up against other crews from the New Zealand rowing stable in pacing sessions and the odd race. It meant it was hard to gauge just where they were at heading to Europe, but Dyke remained

confident they were on track. “We just have to focus on numbers and compare our speeds on last year and make sure we are taking a step up each week,” Dyke said. “We were going fast last year and we’ve definitely got more speed this year. “Half our boat is new so we’ve got a good bunch of younger girls and it’s just how we mesh together and how you work as a team.” She said the New Zealand women’s eight was a lot smaller than the likes of Canada, but what they lacked in size they made up for in efficiency and their technical rowing style. “I think we are good enough. “It’s just trying to execute the perfect race when it matters,” Dyke said.

Last year, the Kiwi women’s eight produced a much better race in their heat than they did in their final at the world championships. This time around they needed to ensure they left something in the tank. After sitting out world cup one, New Zealand’s elite rowing crews left for Europe on Thursday and their first challenge would be the second world cup event in Linz, Austria, from June 22-24. They’d then head into a training camp in Germany before the third world cup event in Lucerne, Switzerland, from July 13-15. They’d then return home and trial for selection for the squad which would head back to Europe five weeks later, for the world championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, from September 9-16.

All Blacks an easy target for referee bias In the recently released six-part documentary All or Nothing: the New Zealand All Blacks, the dramatic crescendo to the first episode focuses on the finish of last year’s third test against the Lions at Eden Park. Supporters of the All Blacks won’t find it any easier to watch a year after the event, and nor will they find any explanation for why Romain Poite changed his

mind in the 78th minute on the penalty for offside in front of the posts or why his assistant Jerome Garces convinced him to do so. In the confused melee of a restart, Lions front-rower Ken Owens caught the ball in an offside position, and then, realising what he had done, dropped it in horror and waited for the inevitable. World Rugby have never felt the need to explain Poite’s u-turn, and

it was the culmination of events over three weeks which surely displayed once and for all that match officials don’t automatically favour the All Blacks, a spurious theory which has again gained currency recently for the actions or nonactions by referee Luke Pearce. The All Blacks are an easy target for criticism for their profile and their incredible run of success. There is also a predilection

in some areas of the media to give them a slap in the modern, digital, world because it generates clicks, likes and retweets. It probably won’t ever change, and nor will the All Blacks’ ruthless attitude to the game. Hansen sums it up when he says of that drawn third test: “We feel like we lost and that’s because we expect to win. Do we want to change that? No.” - NZME

Campese to the rescue David Campese is attempting to save Australian rugby from the grassroots. Savea off to France Out of favour All Blacks winger Julian Savea is set to sign a twoyear deal with Top 14 club Toulon, according to French media. RMC Sports reports that Savea, who wasn’t named in the All Blacks squad for the current French series, will replace Fijian winger Semi Radradra who has signed with rivals Bordeaux. Demonstrated skill and expertise working directly with children within the whanau context is highly desirable.
