When Ashburton’s aquatic centre and sports stadium were first on the drawing board, it was never intended those facilities should pay their way, says retired district councillor Kelvin Holmes. He’s slammed Ashburton’s district councillors for making what he described as a “soft decision” when they opted to scrap a 40 per cent increase in stadium fees, replacing it with a 15 per

cent increase each year for three years. The end result would be even tougher on stadium users, Holmes said. He was one of the hundreds of people who made a submission on the Ashburton District Council’s proposal to raise stadium fees by 40 per cent and pool and gym fees by 9 per cent next year. “The end result will be the same, a stadium that no one can afford to use,” he said. “It’s a soft decision, it didn’t re-

ally recognise the submissions and users are still left having to decide whether they can afford to use the stadium or not.” Holmes was a district councillor when the sports complex was in its infancy and from the outset it was accepted that it was never going to be financially self-supporting, Holmes said. “I look at the discussions and it’s obvious too many people (councillors) are wanting this as close to user pays as possible. If we go to user pays all the way

then no one will use it. Yes, the users should pay some of the costs but not to the detriment of not being able to use it at all.” In opting for a 15 per cent increase each year for three years to arrive at the required 40 per cent rise in fees, councillors may have thought user angst might have been eased. It had not; all they had done was spread the pain, the end result would be the same, if not worse, he said. “They are simply not recognis-

ing what those submitters were trying to get across. They put this out there to get a steer on where to go but they’ve effectively done nothing.” The most important consideration for councillors should be fairness, and were charges fair and equitable for families using the complex, Holmes said.

Electorate win possible in 2020 for Labour, says new chairman By SuSan SandyS

Matt Luxton is the new chairman of the Labour Electorate Committee (LEC) for Rangitata. The 48-year-old Hinds-based building company manager has only just started in the role after the LEC’s annual general meeting this week, but already has a strong family association with the governing Labour Party. This is through his wife Jo Luxton, who is a List MP based in the Rangitata electorate. Luxton replaces Glen Cameron, who stood down at the meeting after five years in the role. Luxton said his goals in the new role included building the party vote in the electorate. And winning the electorate in 2020 was not unachieveable, after Jo

slashed National’s majority last year when Andrew Falloon won. “When you look at the big picture that’s only 3500 votes to win off Andrew, so yes, we will be working harder,” Luxton said. Luxton has an additional family association with politics, in that his cousin in the North Island, John Luxton, is a former National MP. “We are the black sheep of the family,” he joked, referring to the family division over political party support. Cameron said following the meeting he was pleased to be leaving the LEC in good heart, after seeing a complete turnaround in the Labour Party’s fortunes throughout his reign. “We were really down in the polls, now we are in government

and we have an MP,” he said. The lowest point had been when former Rangitata candidate Steve Gibson sparked controversy and quit the party in 2014. There had been a lesson learned through that, however, in that the relatively short candidate selection process did not allow enough time to get to know potential candidates. Cameron worked through Labour Party channels to introduce a longer candidate selection process, and this has since been adopted in other areas around the country. “That’s what sort of helped Jo too,” Cameron said, adding the longer selection time frame had helped her have the time to get to know constituents, and vice versa, prior to the election.

After standing proudly over the Methven Racecourse for more than 100 years, the main public grandstand took in a final view and crashed to the turf yesterday afternoon – succumbing like other old buildings around the district to the demands of earthquake standards. The magnificent structure was first built by Aikens in 1915 and owned by the then Racing Club who operated from the Mt Harding Racecourse on the outskirts of Methven. The build cost 1200 pounds and the grandstand was made to seat 500 people. The Methven Trotting Club would later take over the land and the fittings and have remained the building’s owners since with only minor extensions made in the subsequent years. Methven Trotting Club president, Hamish Molloy said his committee and those before them had discussed frequently the future of the building following the earthquakes and unfortunately the cost of bring the building up to standard was too significant for a club that relies largely on income from their four race meetings a year to meet. “In a perfect world you would keep it and build it up to strength,” Molloy said. “But unfortunately, it’s just not possible and the decision was made to bring it down.” The demolition hasn’t been all plain sailing with asbestos found in the building which required removal before Greg Donaldson Contracting could step in to com-

Cashing in on Methven tourism By Sue NewmaN

When it comes to tourism, Methven is the Ashburton District’s front window, says Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon. This week he facilitated a meeting of Methven business owners aimed at generating ideas that would turn the ski village and surrounding areas into a year round tourist destination. Some of those ideas had real merit, Falloon said, particularly a cycleway that focused on the Methven area and catering for the emerging mid-age bracket traveller whose children were older and who were fit, had more cash freedom and a willingness to travel. With a new cycleway to be developed from Picton to Christchurch and established cycleways to the south, creating a link through the Ashburton District was a logical move, Falloon said. “We need to do whatever we need to do to link these up. Cycleways have been a wildly successful model.” Methven was the district’s premier tourist area in the winter and it could be in the summer as well. If that occurred the entire district would benefit, he said. “The best way Mid Canterbury can succeed in tourism, to me, is if we use Methven as our front window.” Accepting that Methven would never become another Queens-

Doing that, however, would come at a cost and there was a suggestion that a person needed to be employed who was dedicated to working on behalf of the

Methven area, promoting it and co-ordinating events, he said. “We can’t afford not to do this, but how do we fund it? 100 per cent buy in from businesses would be needed.” Other ideas were catering for the growing numbers of independent travellers and freedom campers, businesses partnering together to offer package tours, revitalisation

of the kids-for-free model, exploring the massive potential of the Indian market, and better signage. “I’m keen to carry this conversation on if I can and if they want me to, and I’m interested in seeing what we can do to develop more in the way of attractions, possibly things like adventure tourism and multi-day multisport events,” Falloon said.

There were strong, new markets such as India on offer but it was important not to forget the potential of the domestic market as well, he said. The single, biggest impediment to growth was identified as labour shortages and many people at the meeting were concerned about plans to cut immigration numbers.

Stadium users were stunned to find that in spite of receiving so much opposition to the higher fees, councillors had all but ignored what the community was saying. “This is saying that it doesn’t matter, we’re making the decision we want to make, we’ll do it anyway. Now we’ll be following through with our options.” While it had signed over the ownership and operation of the

complex to the council in the early days of the project, Stadium Trust chairman Maurice Myers said the original objective had been to provide a community hub for the benefit of Mid Canterbury people. “The brief the council gave us was to raise $5 million before the project could proceed and we did that.” From the outset it was always clear that community pools did not make money and in his earlier

position as chairman of the Community Pool Board, Myers said he had submitted figures from a range of other council pools around New Zealand that made it very clear that none made money. While he could understand the council’s drive to have the stadium running on a 50/50 user and rates basis, the question was whether the shortfall could be bridged by increasing use rather than ramping up the price.

A Bronze Tiki for selfless service to scouting movement By Katie todd

After 16 years of selfless service to local Scouting, a “deserving” Darryl Dellow has taken home a Bronze Tiki in recognition of his efforts. Dellow was nominated as the recipient of the award for his involvement with the Tinwald Group, Netherby Group and District team from 1990 until today, and took home the award at the end of last month. Dellow first began helping at the Netherby Group in 1990 but took a break after having children. In 2001 he joined again and has worked in a variety of roles, becoming a “role model for the Scouting youth” and a mentor for new leaders. Mania-O-Roto Scout Zone Leader Michele Brown said during the time Dellow was a cub leader, young cubs thrived due to his enthusiasm, fun and sense of adventure. While he was a district cub leader, Dellow organised a number of Spring Cub Camps with great success and was an inspiration to leaders

around him. And as the Tinwald Group treasurer, she said Dellow had the gift of balancing the books and chasing the last parent. Dellow said although it was definitely nice to be recognised the idea of an award had no bearing on why he wanted to help out with Scouting. “It’s just so good to see the involvement and the growth. You see kids start off shy and reserved and come out quite confident … and that’s good to see.” With his own children now grown up, Dellow said he has tried to step back from Scouting, but still works in the background as patron of the Tinwald Group. “Darryl is an inspirational leader to both his peers and to the youth that he works with,” Brown said. Harrison joins trustees Methven’s Care Trust will benefit from some international experience and guidance with returning local Sir Graeme Harrison joining its team of trustees. Harrison was born in Methven and after a career that saw him involved with a range of international organisations, returned home in 2010 after an absence of 45 years. During those years Harrison went to university in New Zealand and the United Kingdom, spent 13 years based overseas, founded one of New Zealand’s leading export businesses and represented the country and his business on numerous trade missions and in international forums. He was the inaugural Chairman of the New Zealand International Business Forum for eight years, served on national bodies such as the New Zealand-China Coun-

Sir Graeme Harrison cil, and has a number of current involvements with Lincoln University. He has long been associated with the New Zealand meat industry and has held company governance roles for extended periods in seafood and dairy. Sir Graeme has been honoured by the Governments of New Zea-

land (2011) and Japan (2015). In 2010 he was named Federated Farmers Agribusiness person of the year and in 2016 he received the Rabobank Australia and New Zealand Leadership Award. Joanna Suyker, MCT chairperson, said she was delighted Harrison had accepted an invitation to join the trust. “Having someone of this calibre join our team just shows the support that Methven Care Trust has in our community”, she said. The Methven Care Trust is the fundraising arm and developer of the new aged care facility in Methven to replace Methven House. Harrison’s parents, Kath and Tom Harrison, were residents of Methven House. He joins chairperson Suyker, and trustees Janine Holland, Jan Anderson, Colin Lill and Roger Henderson.

Methven Heritage Centre title dropped By SuSan SandyS

The Mt Hutt Memorial Hall and Heritage Board is to seek the opinion of Methven people on what the name of the hall it oversees should be. Traditionally the community hall has been known as the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall, but in more recent years it has also been called the Methven Heritage Centre. Methven Community Board members were recently consulted on their take on the issue, and advised that the hall be called either the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall or the Methven Memorial Hall. Mt Hutt Memorial Hall and Heritage Board chairman Martin Nordqvist has his own opinion on the issue, and is favouring a name change. He wants to see the hall called the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall –

Methven. “We don’t want to lose either of them I think, we want to keep both the names, Mt Hutt and Methven, they are both relevant to our area,” Nordqvist said. The memorial hall title not only encompassed the building’s traditional roots, he said, but had an advantage in that buildings with a memorial title were eligible for certain types of funding. The board will ask Methven residents for their opinion in the Snowfed community newspaper, and take these into account when making a decision. The hall is a focal point for the community, encompassing meeting rooms, the town’s live performance space, the Methven i-SITE, Methven Travel, New Zealand Alpine and Agriculture Encounter, New Zealand Ski Heritage Museum and Methven Art Gallery.

Ashburton audience tough to crack By Katie todd

“Okay Ashburton … so you put the papier mache dog on the ledge, and then you solve the pigeon poo problem, and the real dog is safe.” It was a sentence never uttered before – and probably never to be uttered again. And it was the result of two top Kiwi comedians going head-to-head with a tough-to-crack Ashburton audience earlier this week. Nick Rado, head writer for 7 Days, and Raybon Kan, Metro Best Comedian winner, brought their show Rado & Raybon Save the World to the Ashburton Trust Event Centre on Tuesday night. The duo are on tour around New Zealand, and the show consists of both stand-up comedy and finding solutions to all the audience’s problems – big, small, gross or bizarre. While the smaller-than-anticipated turnout saw the Ashburton show shifted from the Event Centre auditorium into the foyer, the duo did not hesitate to make fun of the elephant in the room. “Well, what can I say?” began Rado. “It’s always been a dream of mine to perform in an Ashbur-

ton foyer.” The pair, close pals since meeting backstage at the Edinburgh Festival, delivered differing yet complementary styles of comedy. The slightly cynical Raybon negotiated the tough topics of racism and divorce with surprisingly innovative humour, while Rado earned chuckles through enrapturing spiels with painfully dry endings – most notably, a 25 minute tale to justify a pun about a Meatloaf song. Later, the audience were called upon to anonymously submit their problems. The pair tackled everything from “how do I make my 7-yearold son eat his dinner” and “what can I do to stop my kittens suckling on my dressing gown?” to “how can the Act party win more votes?” Inevitably, the ability of the two to produce a hilarious answer for each question was hit and miss. But I don’t think any audience member could have doubted the remarkable resourcefulness and wit of the duo. Following the show, Rado said he promises to return to Ashburton “with a vengeance”. The duo headed to Geraldine

Four literary whizzes from Mt Somers Springburn School are celebrating first place success at the regional Lit Quiz competition – despite it being their debut appearance at the event. Year 7s Jess Heaven, Bronte Brown, Will Murphy and Arlo Bruce will be winging their way to Wellington in June to compete in the national competition, after taking out the Lit Quiz Mid-South Canterbury heat on Tuesday. At the heat at Waihi School, the four proved their literary prowess against 30 other teams, each also consisting of four students between 10 and 13 years of age. Teacher Hayley Duthie said the “quite

close” competition kept the Mt Somers Springburn School team on their toes. “They were losing by half a point going into the last round … but they got 84 points, and second place went to Grantlea Downs with 81.5 and Highfield came third with 79.” Teams were allowed to double their points for one round – and Mt Somers Springburn School selected ‘superheroes’ as their strongest suit. The winning team has been given $1000 to fund their trip to the nationals, and Duthie said all of them are thrilled with the win. In Wellington, they will compete against top-scoring teams from around the country and vie for a place in the international competition.

Fuchsia growers gather in Ashburton It might be one of the smaller national gatherings of enthusiasts, but Ashburton Fuchsia Group members say their annual conference is one of the country’s friendliest events. Groups of fuchsia growers have met annually but over time numbers have declined and this year Ashburton hosts the organisa-

tion’s annual gathering where numbers are now at just 60 attendees. Local president May Sanford said the gathering will be high on fellowship. The National Fuchsia Society’s annual meeting and Fuchsiarama will be held at the Hotel Ashburton from today until Sunday.

After months in the works, the Tinwald School Fete has been deemed an “amazing” success. Perfect weather and an array of activities lured crowds in their throngs to the event last Sunday, and funds raised will help revitalise the school’s adventure playground.

Red and white in aid of Tonga An impressive, student-led effort at Allenton School has further boosted the Red Cross Pacific Fund in aid of Tonga. Allenton School house leaders approached principal Graham Smith to see if the school could have a mufti day to raise funds for the Tongan Relief Fund and, on March 2, it was all go. Students dressed up in red and white and gave gold coins generously. An impressive total of about $760 was raised for the island nation.

Time to shrink councillor numbers? F

or the first time since the Ashburton District Council was formed in 1989, its elected members have said there are too many of them on the payroll. They’ve decided that 12 people around a council table is three too many, saying nine would create a better functioning team. Not every councillor sees it that way, but when they voted the weight of numbers won the day with just three, Mark Malcolm, Selwyn Price and Thelma Bell, wanting to stick with the status quo. It wasn’t an idea that came out of the ether or left field. Reviewing elected member numbers is something every local authority is required to do

every six years and when we measure our numbers against the rest of the country, our numbers are big. In Canterbury the council stands alone with 12 councillors – Waimakariri (population 59,200) has 11; Selwyn, (population 59,300) has 10; Timaru (population 47,100) has nine and Hurunui (population 12,800) also has nine. Councillors are in a better position to know what works than any

one of us, but we also have an opportunity to have a say in both an online survey and later, through the submission process. When you look at the pros and cons of fewer councillors there’s not a lot to argue. The greater the number of people involved in a decisionmaking process, the less chance there is of a decision being made. It becomes an exercise in herding cats. Councillors themselves proved this over the civic centre and library rebuild. They had a project controlgroup, of which three councillors were members. That group reported back to all councillors and that meant everyone was informed.

This way of doing things didn’t sit well with some of the newer councillors and they wanted everyone to be part of the group. They wanted to be part of the action. And they were – for a short time. It didn’t work and they’ve now gone back to the original plan; too many voices muddied the water and stymied progress. Again, not everyone was happy when the big team was canned, but that’s democracy in action. The risky part with a smaller number of councillors, is that there will be no room for slackers, for not doing your homework and for failing to stand up and be counted. If a smaller number gets the

public nod, then we’ll need a lineup of strong candidates next time round. On the up side, each one of those will be better paid as the funding pool won’t decrease, that’s population based. We’ve had two attempts to cut numbers in the past, 2006 and 2012; let’s hope this year the idea’s time has come. It’s up to us to make sure we lay the foundations for the councillor team we will need after next year’s election, the team that will lead us into the future – one mayor and nine committed and forwardthinking men and women who are prepared to stand up and be counted and who have the courage and foresight to carry our district’s future on their shoulders.

The laying days of Easter M

y first job was getting laid. I was young, and inexperienced, she was my first. I’d never done it with anyone before and she taught me much that would serve me well later in life. I think we were around the same age at a guess, I’m not entirely sure. Although she was certainly my first, I pretty much knew she’d had others before me. And not just fooling around either. The real deal, going all the way – getting laid. I knew nothing of her history but just accepted her for what she was. She was a really great chick, no actually on reflection that’s not right, . . . she was a chook, a good layer . . . and her name was Meg. She and I spent weeks on end together, for a number of years, but only at one time of year. The weeks leading up to Easter. Meg the Hen was an Easter institution at Hays Department Store (where Farmers is now) and making sure she delivered the goods – foil-wrapped marshmellow eggs – earned me my very first pay packets. I can’t remember my exact age, but employment was a fuzzy business back then, cheap child labour wasn’t frowned upon, and I guess I must have been in about Standard Four or Form One when I landed the gig. So let me describe the scenario, paint you a mind picture, so we can re-live those halcyon times together. Meg was a big girl, you could say that about girls then, around a metre or more tall – that’s large for a chook. She squatted on her nest in front of a diorama wall depicting the Easter Bunny scurrying down

a country lane, with a large egg in his hand. There was a slot in the diorama where kiddies could place their sixpence, and later five cent pieces, and I sat concealed from public view behind this set up with a counter-weighted lift and a cardboard channel from the coin slot, running on an angle down to a shoebox on the floor. On receipt of said sixpence appearing through the slot and rolling down into the shoebox, the real talent which had landed me the position, kicked in. “Book book book book book book . . . book book book,” I would chirp. Bringing my entire range of skills together simultaneously, I would pull the counter-weighted lift down, and on the outside, the little kids would observe Meg obediently crouching over her nest. In this position, the small hole in the wall, concealed on her offside would line up perfectly with a tube through her abdomen and out her lady bits. At this juncture, I would place the foil wrapped egg on its delivery trip through said hen’s abdomen and with a further chorus of “book book book book boooooook”, like Josh Groban, I’d raise her up. One egg delivered. One happy kid. Where it got really stressful, was when a whole family or even several families, finding it hard to contain their excitement, stuck multiple coins in quick

succession into the slot, causing me a Mr Bean-style moment of panic, and making a quick guess at the number of eggs required. If there was crying on the other side following the lay, I’d keep delivering extra eggs until the unrest subsided. Confession: Sometimes I’m sure I laid more than we were paid for. I still sometimes lay awake at night, wondering if I seriously impacted Mr Hays’ bottom line. I kind of have a fiscal fit. Sometimes as a test, staff would insert washers into the slot to check on my concentration. Laying an egg for a washer was a serious employee breach. So after the bell rang at Hampstead at three each afternoon, off I’d head to my job on the pushbike and take up my position assisting the celebrity hen. At times I could hear raucous laughing from the ladies in the nearby haberdashery and cosmetics departments who I’m sure at times had to visit Mrs James in the lingerie department to secure dry underwear after my youthful “book book booking”, ringing out across the store, had made them piss theirs. All these years later I can only hope they were laughing with me not at me, but that might be a bit of a stretch. Meg taught me the value of earning a dollar (or a pound pre-67), the commitment of turning up and doing the job, and how to treat a lady. Well, that last one might just look good on paper. I don’t know what became of her, I was eventu-

Bright star extinguished He was given two years to live at the age of 21. For the next 55 years he defied the odds – and astounded the world with his theories on the cosmos. The world’s greatest scientist – and one of its finest minds – Professor Stephen Hawking, died peacefully at the age of 76 yesterday at his home in Cambridge, north of London. In a statement, the physicist’s children, Lucy, Robert and Tim said: “We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today. “He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years. “His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humour inspired people across the world. “He once said, ‘It would not be much of a universe if it wasn’t home to the people you love.’ We will miss him forever.” In 1962, when Stephen Hawking turned 21, he was diagnosed with a degenerative motor neuron disease similar to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig’s disease. Doctors said it would probably kill him within two years. Soon afterwards, he went to Cambridge to start a PhD

Trilogy set to leave NZX; sale looms

The company first joined the NZX in 2010 when it was just the Ecoya candlemaker. The shares rose 1.1 per cent to $2.80 yesterday. “In recommending the scheme your directors have taken into account that whilst TIL is well positioned to deliver growth in earnings, delivering this growth will take some time and involves execution risks,” said chair Grant Baker, whose Business Bakery unit threw its 31 per cent stake

behind the offer. “Throughout this process no superior proposal has emerged that the directors believe is more favourable to shareholders than the scheme.” The deal is still subject to Overseas Investment Office approval, and once that’s received Trilogy will seek a High Court order ratifying the transaction.

It’s aiming to delist on April 11 and pay shareholders on April 20, Baker said. Trilogy issued a profit warning earlier this week, saying earnings could miss guidance by as much as 10 per cent on weak Ecoya candle sales in the fourth quarter and uncertain timing for orders of its Lanocorp beauty products.

Rocket Lab prepares for launch Aerospace company Rocket Lab has confirmed its first fully-commercial rocket launch will take off from Mahia in just a few weeks. The United States-based orbital launch provider confirmed its next launch will be a fully-commercial flight to put two Lemur-2 cubesats into orbit for launch customer Spire Global. Those would be used to provide commercial ship-tracking and weather monitoring services. Rocket Lab would confirm a full launch manifest in coming weeks. The flight’s name was put to a vote on social media, with “It’s Business Time” coming out as a clear fan favourite and a continuation of company’s previous

flight names, “It’s a Test” and “Still Testing”. Rocket Lab founder and chief executive Peter Beck said “It’s Business Time” highlighted Rocket Lab’s agile approach to responsive space. “The launch has been manifested just weeks out from launch, rather than the many months or years it can typically take under existing launch models. “As the satellite industry continues to innovate at break-neck pace and the demand for orbital infrastructure grows, we’re there with a production line of Electron vehicles ready to go and a private launch site licensed for flight every 72 hours. “Launch will no longer be the bottleneck that slows innovation

Staff told via text that they no longer have jobs Just one week after Doughnut Time announced they were closing a large portion of their stores in a desperate bid to save the brand, the company’s few remaining employees have been notified via text message they no longer have a job. Last week, it was reported the doughnut chain would be sold by founder Damien Griffiths to the company’s former CEO, Dan Strachotta. But according to the ABC, Griffiths has refused to sign over the company, sending Doughnut Time into liquidation – and leaving all employees of the chain

On Tuesday, Trilogy said Business Bakery would pick up certain transaction costs for Citic, and the Grant Samuel report said the skincare products firm planned to enter into consultancy agreements with Steve Sinclair and Grant Baker, with Citic suggesting the skincare products maker pay the same amount of director and consulting fees as it did in management fees to Business Bakery, including potential for renegotiation. Business Bakery received $330,000 in the March 2017 year. Trilogy is the second company to delist from NZX this year, following Xero’s shift to consolidate its listing on the ASX. The Auckland-based company first joined the bourse in 2010 when it was just the Ecoya candle maker, raising $10 million in an initial public offering selling shares at $1 apiece. That was underwritten by the Business Bakery, which ended up buying almost a third of the shares giving it a stake of 65 percent. Trilogy International is set to delist from NZX with shareholders backing a $211 million takeover from China’s Citic Capital Partners at yesterday’s special meeting, leaving regulatory approvals the final obstacle to the deal. Almost 53 million shares, amounting to 99 per cent support, were cast in favour of a resolution for a scheme of arrangement with Citic, which will see the Chinese investment firm pay $2.90 a share to take over the listed skincare products and scented candle maker, a notice to the stock exchange shows. The scheme structure required at least 75 per cent support and half the firm’s voting rights to be cast, which was met with almost 74 per cent. Trilogy’s directors backed the offer, which fell within independent adviser Grant Samuel’s valuation range of between $2.59 and $2.94 per share, and was 28 per cent higher than the $2.26 price the shares were trading at before the offer, a level the independent adviser report said was close to the average premium offered in successful takeovers of listed companies.

Skin may benefit from wearing wool AgResearch scientists are shedding new light on the connection between what people wear and the health of their skin. In research funded by Australian Wool Innovation (AWI), AgResearch has been working with human volunteers and testing skin reactions to different fabrics – and initial findings show benefits for skin health from the natural fibre (wool) over a synthetic fibre (polyester). The work follows on from studies by AWI at the Queensland Institute of Dermatology and the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute that showed significant reductions in sufferers’ eczema symptoms from wearing superfine wool garments against the skin. “There’s been a lot of science looking at the connection between our health and what we put in our bodies, but here we are looking what we wear on our bodies and what that may mean for our skin health,” AgResearch scientist Dr Alex Hodgson said. “We set out with our 16 volunteers to look at how their healthy skin reacted to wearing close-fitting fabrics during the day – wool and polyester. “The volunteers wore merino wool base-layer shirts, with a patch of polyester on one side of

From this, we can see that wool promoted the maintenance of healthy skin whilst polyester had

a drying effect with some inflammation.” “The study has a second phase which involves a ‘long-term’ wear study in which the volunteers wear the trial garments continuously for five days and nights. The results of this will be assessed later this year.” “Ultimately this work is about providing guidance and reassur-

ance for consumers. We know consumers now consider many factors before they buy goods. Just as people now know what different foods can do to their health, our aim is that people will also be able to make informed choices about what they wear, and what that might mean for the health of their skin.”

Clarification on M. bovis eradication urgently needed

P

ressure continues to mount on Ministry for Primary Industries officials to make a decision on whether eradication of mycoplasma bovis remains a possibility. That decision is due in the next couple of weeks but an increasing number of farmers I’ve spoken to reckon that’s just postponing the inevitable and the ministry should accept that the disease is here to stay and time and money would be better spent working out a management plan rather continuing to try and get rid of it. I understand that it’s not a decision that can be taken lightly

but given M. bovis was confirmed in the middle of last year, and new infected properties are found quite regularly these days, for farmers to move on someone has to make the hard decision soon. It can’t be put off any longer. Sometimes I get the feeling

that MPI has almost accepted that the disease is here to stay but they just find it hard to admit that to themselves. A couple of weeks ago it announced that it was “especially interested” to hear from people who have received cattle or calves from Southland-based Southern Centre Dairies Limited at any time after January 1, 2016, who have not already been contacted by the ministry. I’m sorry but if there are concerns about stock movements going back more than two years, then I’m not filled with confidence that eradication is still a possibility.

Agriculture Minister Damien O’Connor said last week that a significant piece of work was under way to look at the technical feasibility of eradication and the cost benefit of eradication versus long-term management. I sincerely hope that work began months ago and it’s not going to delay the decision. There is also the very real possibility that the country will end up divided geographically over M. bovis, with Cook Strait the boundary. O’Connor has already asked his officials to explore the feasibility and implications of making the North Island M. bovis free,

given the majority of infected properties are in the South. We saw something similar earlier this year, when organisers of a major North Island cattle show asked southerners not to attend, after receiving advice from both MPI and DairyNZ. However, that was for one event and not a blanket policy. It would be a big call for that sort of message to come from a government ministry, and it could be perceived that South Island farmers have been given up on, effectively making them second class citizens. That may not be the intention but it would be the reality.

Rural women on global stage Opportunities and challenges for rural women was the key theme of New Zealand’s National Statement at the SixtySecond Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW 62) delivered yesterday in New York. The National Statement was delivered by Minister for Women Julie Anne Genter. “New Zealand rural women’s continued resilience and innovative spirit were represented on the world stage today,” Genter said. “The Provincial Growth Fund will ensure more money is invested in our regions, and this will benefit our rural women. “New Zealand recognises that women are disproportionately affected by climate change in weather dependent rural economies. “New Zealand supports the Gender Action Plan, recently adopted by the United Nations, which seeks to promote genderresponsive climate policy. “Reproductive and sexual health services and rights continue to be of particular importance in New Zealand, and around the world. “We were able to shine a light on rural New Zealand women who throughout history have been the backbone of rural New Zealand communities. “We are pleased their leadership is increasingly being recognised. An example of this recognition is the appointment of Katie Milne as Federated Farmers president, making her the first woman president in its 118-year history”, Genter said.

QUICK MEAL

Ham, cheese and pineapple pizza pinwheels 2C self-raising flour Pinch of salt 75g cold butter, cut into cubes Approx 3/4 C milk 1/4 C tomato paste 100g shaved ham, sliced 225g can pineapple pieces, drained 1C grated mozzarella ■ Preheat the oven to 200°C. ■ Line a baking tray with baking paper. ■ Sift the flour and salt into a large bowl. Rub the butter into the flour with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. ■ Add the milk and mix together with a knife until a soft dough forms. ■ Turn the dough onto a lightly floured board and lightly knead it until it is smooth. ■ Roll the dough out into a rectangle approximately 35cm x 25cm.

Allenton Croquet Club Club President Ann Sunbeam welcomed a good attendance of members to the monthly meeting. Only a few weeks till the closing. Allenton Sports Club will close on Saturday April 8. Most competitions and tournaments have been completed except the last round of the gala cup. Trophies should be returned. Those using club mallets are asked to return them to enable them to be labelled properly While the Waireka Club lawns are being upgraded their club members are using our lawns.

The greens will be closed this Saturday to allow the Association Gold Cup matches to be played. This tournament includes players from throughout New Zealand. Upcoming dates to look forward to, short notice but next Tuesday 20th, we will be holding our Two Club challenge, this has had a few years off, and we are looking to re-launch it, so from 4:30 onwards, until about 6ish report to the starters box, pay your $5 and play nine holes with only 2 clubs, one of which must be your putter. Therefore you have to make a choice, do I go for length off the tee and take a rescue club and hope I don’t go in a bunker,

or do I go for a mid-iron and play for accuracy. Prize giving will be on the night when the last groups are in, should be before 8 o’clock. Russell Moon and Fail have again put up a club sub for the season long RMF Cup, this will kick off on March 24, all the dates and points allocation to follow soon. Run and Walk Ashburton The opening of the winter series for Run and Walk Ashburton took place on Saturday March 10, 2018. We had a lovely sunny day with a light breeze. Eleven walkers went from the Domain Pavilion around various streets up to Argyle Park and back, with four runners completing several circuits around the Domain. The afternoon was enjoyed by all who attended.

Mid Canterbury Women’s Institute Hinds The Hinds Women’s Institute began the New Year with a meeting held in the Hinds Community Centre. President Betty Wilson welcomed members and everyone joined in the Ode and Aspirations. Apologies were received; correspondence and financial matters were dealt with. The usual business end of the meeting was conducted and members were reminded of our forthcoming AGM and the Mid-Canterbury AGM on 16th March. Members were also advised that the Home and Country Magazine is now available online. A reminder too, that Hinds WI will supply morning tea at the Hinds RSA service. Our member Annette told us about her holiday to Britain and Ireland late in 2017. For many of us it was a trip down memory lane and it was so refreshing to be reminded of many totally British places she visited. For others it was interesting to hear about Annette’s experiences in, and view the photographs of, London, Plymouth, Bath, Cardiff, Dublin, Derry, Edinburgh, the many castles etc. She and her husband plan another trip next year.

Lowcliffe Six members met at the home of Olive Philpott for the February meeting. Good to catch up after the Christmas holidays. After the Aspirations were said and minutes of the last meeting read, activities for the coming year were discussed.

Lowcliffe WI will be providing lunch for the forthcoming Annual meeting on March 16. The Project for the year, “Teach a Skill” was discussed and several ideas were forthcoming. Lowcliffe will send a delegate to the National AGM in Lower Hutt in May. The Annual meeting produced an interesting Annual Report and a healthy balance sheet. Members were saddened to record the passing of two members during the year. Elections of officers were then held and dates for the year sorted. The Meeting closed and lunch followed ending an enjoyable time sharing together.

Netherby President Pauline Palmer welcomed thirty members and a new transfer. She hoped that all had had a lovely Christmas and a Happy New Year, also thanking all those who had delivered Meals on Wheels the week previously. The new National Theme is to be “share the Friendship” and the project, “Teach a Skill”. “Golden Threads” became “Golden Moments” as each member shared their joys from the holiday break. The monthly raffle was won by Ngaire Gibbs, and the roll call of a loaf to be donated to the Cancer Society brought forth eight loaves. Valmai Mitchell won both the North Church and Moylan Trophies in the competitions. The Annual General Meeting saw Pauline reading

Wakanui Wakanui WI started 2018 with a meeting including the Annual Meeting held at the home of Margaret Cullimore. President, Jenette Storrier welcomed all present including a new members, Bernice Laird. The motto for the evening was, “When hands reach out in friendship, hearts are touched with joy.” New programmes for the year were distributed showing an interesting year ahead. Jeanette Cuthbertson was nominated to serve a further year on the Mid Canterbury Executive. Sue Kent, Secretary, presented the Annual Report for 2017 showing a busy and productive year. Officers elected for 2018 were: President Jenette Storrier, Vice-Presidents Julianna Protheroe and Diane Carter, Secretary Sue Kent and Treasurer Jeanette Begg. The trophy for most points in competitions for the year was won by Janet Butterick.

Encouraging update The recovery signs are looking good for the side-lined New Zealand Horse of the Year Bonneval. The multiple Group One winner’s proposed autumn campaign in Australia was halted by a suspensory ligament issue, but the outlook is encouraging. “We had another scan done 10 days after the initial scan and things look fairly positive at this stage,” said Andrew Forsman, who trains Bonneval at Cambridge with Murray Baker. “She’ll have a good break and hopefully, all going well, we can get her back to the track in the spring.”

In brief Rogers to coach Former Test opener Chris Rogers will become Australia’s new highperformance batting coach after impressing in youth mentor roles. Rogers, who scored five centuries during his 25-Test career, will join the Brisbane-based national performance program on a threeyear contract that begins in May. He replaces 21-Test batsman Matthew Elliot, who was only appointed to the post in February 2017. Rogers, 40, most recently was an assistant coach for Australia’s under-19 world cup team and has previously held coaching roles for Cricket Australia XI teams and English county club Somerset.

The 43-year-old did not look like he had made much progress from his winless 2017 campaign at the opening Supercars round in Adelaide. Australian guard Dante Exum is nearing a return to NBA action after reaching the final stage of his rehabilitation from a shoulder injury. The 22-year-old, who separated his left shoulder in what teammate and compatriot Joe Ingles described as a “freak” accident in a pre-season game in October last year, trained with G League team Salt Lake City Stars on Tuesday. The Jazz described it as his last stage in the “return to play protocol”. Local media reported that Exum could return to the NBA as early as this week but head coach Quin Snyder didn’t reveal a date when addressing reporters. “Over this next week, we’ll continue to evaluate where he is,” Snyder told reporters on Tuesday. “But he’s put himself in a position where there’s a very real chance he’s going to be able to come back this year and we’ll hope that’s sooner than later.”

New Zealand allrounder Mitchell Santner has been ruled out of cricket for up to nine months with a knee injury which requires surgery. The 26-year-old, who has been a star performer with the bat in the recent one-dayers against England, was missing from the 12-man squad named on Wednesday for the two-Test series. He has been replaced by 31-year-old Canterbury legspinner Todd Astle. Santner, who has taken 34 wickets at an average of 37 from 17 Tests with his left-arm spin, experienced discomfort in his right knee during the recent England and Australia one-day matches and a scan revealed a bone defect. A further scan showed it had deteriorated further and required surgery. Santner will be operated on later this week. He would be out of cricket for six to nine months. “On a personal level everyone feels for Mitchell. He’s a popular guy in the changing room and he’s well respected for the work he puts in for the side,” New Zealand coach Mike Hesson said. “Mitchell is a key player in all three formats for us, so we’ll certainly miss him in the upcoming series. “It’s important though that he gets this fixed and we have him

Westpac rescuers swap wings for wheels Westpac Air Rescue staff competing in Le Race next week hope that they won’t be needing their colleagues when they take on the 100km cycling race from Christchurch to Akaroa. The Air Rescue Trust has been selected as the charity of choice for Le Race and four staff members will be teaming up to fly the flag for their respected flying medical service. Le Race Event Manager Sheree Stevens said even though she hoped that none of the competitors on March 24 will need an aerial evacuation, the Air Rescue Trust was a great organisation for the cyclists to support. “Our competitors cover a lot of tricky terrain, just like cyclists around the South Island each week, and it is good to know that these fantastic people are ready to come to the rescue if required,” said Stevens. Three pilots and one nurse will be part of the race to show their appreciation for the event’s support from for the Air Rescue Trust. Helicopter pilot Matt Boulcott will be riding on behalf of the helicopter crews, while the New Zealand Flying Doctor Service is represented by pilot Rupert McLachlan, flight nurse Nurse Francine Buick and former pilot Grant Mitchell.

The foursome has been clocking up the hours to be well prepared for the 100km slog across the Banks Peninsula hills, and Rupert McLachlan says it has not been easy to fit the training in with their busy rosters. “All my training now needs to fit around shift work and my kids, so I just ride whenever I can,” McLachlan said, who still manages to fit in a very respectable 300km each week. Amazingly, in between training and work he still finds time to groom a possible future star of Le Race. “I love riding with my fouryear-old, he loves getting out on his mountain bike.” Since the Air Rescue Service was formed in 1989, it has completed over 10,000 rescues, with nearly half of those for motor accidents, leisure activities and other accident, including cyclists who may have taken a tumble. Cyclists who compete in Le Race can make a donation when they register or are invited to enter teams to fundraise for the Air Rescue Service, which requires $7 million to stay in the air each year. “We are fortunate we have a generous community behind us,” said Christine Prince, CEO of the Air Rescue Service. “We are only 50 per cent government funded, so our com-

Warriors coach Stephen Kearney wants his side to improve their focus and discipline ahead of their first home NRL game of the season against the Gold Coast Titans on Saturday. Expectations are high following their impressive round one 32-20 upset win over South Sydney in Perth last Saturday and the pressure is on the team to continue their good start and register opening back-to-back wins for just the third time since the club’s inception in 1995. Mid Canterbury Softball will host a secondary schools softball tournament next week for the first time in 30 years. Eight boys teams and five girls teams from schools all over the South Island will compete on five diamonds at Argyle Park starting Monday in the four-day event. Tournament director Carl O’Neill said Argyle Park would be

transformed for the event with the addition of a portacom to act as headquarters and extra netting erected around the diamonds. Mid Canterbury Softball has also used the occasion to update some of its equipment, including bases. The division two event will be supported by New Zealand Softball, who have appointed umpires. O’Neill, who played softball in

his youth, has previously coached Ashburton College teams and said Ashcoll teams had been attending school softball tournaments for the past five years. The girls are this year being coached by Pat Patea and are a mix of ages from Year 9 to 13. The side includes New Zealand representative Kate Flanagan, who plays her club softball in Christchurch but is a student at the college. The boys are coached by Ritch-

ie Johnstone and are also a mix of ages, though there was more experience at secondary school tournament level. O’Neill said games were scheduled to get under way at 9am on Monday. Both AshColl teams will have games at 5pm on the opening day. He said spectators were welcome at the event to support both local and visiting teams and there would be some good softball tal-

ent on display. The girls will play a round robin and include teams from AshColl, Buller, Southland, Dunstan and Burnside. The boys will play in two pools of four with crossover play beginning Wednesday. The teams include AshColl, Southland, Timaru, Lincoln, Rolleston, Dunstan and two Christchurch schools. Both finals will be on Thursday, starting with the girls at 11am.
