Colourful street art, water stations to refill drink bottles and snazzy seating were ideas promoted to the Ashburton District Council yesterday by some of their youngest ratepayers. Councillors had asked eight schools for their students’ thoughts on what to include in a revitalised town centre. Council is currently asking for community feedback on plans for a central

business area revamp and is also in the early planning stages of building a new headquarters at Baring Square East. Councillor Russell Ellis applauded the students’ suggestions, saying council might have been able to reduce consultants’ fees considerably if they had gone to the students first. Hampstead School students Josiah Abernathy, Milla Overend and Alex Cojocaru said interesting street art, like that in Wellington city, and the crea-

tive use of LED lighting would make the town sparkle. It would also attract buskers and musicians. Making some streets one-way would also encourage cafes to develop onto footpath areas.

Funding boost to Igniting Change By Linda CLarke

The Methven Community Board has been given $20,000 to advance a promotional plan to attract more people to its town and the wider foothills area. A project, called Igniting Change, has already identified business and tourist opportunities for Methven and the board had asked the Ashburton District Council for $32,000 to further some plans. Preliminary discussions have already been held around the possible development of an agricultural training college in Methven, a biological dairy production and boutique butter plant, and a brewery and distillery operation. Councillors on the finance and business support committee decided yesterday to allocate $20,000 to the board, which will concentrate on the preparation and implementation of a Methven area promotional plan and the development of an annual event that would draw visitors. Community board chairman Dan McLaughlin said yesterday the plan was to fit people with ideas, needs, wants and ability together. As an example, community members had been approached by an Australian company looking to buy butter. “They want a product, we have to find someone to do it.” The Igniting Change project is also aimed at filling empty business space and McLaughlin said five of six empty shops would be leased within the next few months. A report for councillors by community relations manager Vincie Billante said community ideas at the moment were multiple and wide-ranging but some ideas and actions did merit further consideration and were worthy of development and council support. The $20,000 will come from the Economic Development Budget. Councillor Stuart Wilson said allowing someone with initiative to develop the project’s ideas was an excellent use of money in the fund. The approval for funding was unanimous.

Treasures unearthed in council offices By Linda CLarke

A precious hand-coloured photograph has been found unloved and unappreciated in an Ashburton District Council office. The framed image by renowned aerial photographer Leo White was discovered on the floor of the asset management office by Ashburton Art Gallery staff recently; they are in the process of assessing council’s art collection, which includes paintings and sculptures it has bought or been gifted over the years. The assessment was yielding some surprises, gallery curator Shirin Khosraviani told councillors on the finance and business support committee yes-

terday. The Leo White photograph was a case in point. White was a passionate flyer and photographer and began capturing some of New Zealand’s iconic landscapes by air in the late 1940s. He set up a business, Whites Aviation, which involved employing a team of women to hand-colour his black and white prints. The images are now highly sought after. Khosraviani said staff had thought it was a photograph. “It was sitting on the floor and we missed it the first time. We were told it was a painting but it was a photograph.” She said council had two of the

Whites Aviation photographs in its collection, as well as a pottery piece by David Brokenshire. “He made very beautiful and significant work in New Zealand as a potter and it is lovely to see it undamaged and in the collection.” Gallery staff are spending one day a month hunting down council’s treasures, assessing, cataloguing and storing them. The information may be one day available to the public in a searchable database, and they will be able to see what is in council’s collection and where they can view the artworks. Council would also eventually have to decide how it wanted to display the pieces.

Students have their say on planned CBD revamp From P1 A group from Ashburton Intermediate School started the forum, with suggestions for a mini golf course in Baring Square and graffiti art walls, that could be the responsibility of schools. Kasey Higson, Leilani Fifita and Jack Middleton also made a plea for more picnic tables and chairs. They said more colour was needed in the CBD. It was a common theme from other schools, Netherby suggesting the inner town was dull and bland and needed to reflect the district’s growing cultural mix; flags of the different nationalities that now called Ashburton home might help. Ashburton College senior students Maggie Tarry and Megan White said closing off East Street between Burnett and Tancred Street to create a walking street was a good idea. The space could be inviting and include features like concrete table tennis tables. They said students also liked the idea of a rooftop bar or restaurant, sculptures and an ice cream and gelato shop. It was important for younger people that the area had free wi-fi.

Welcoming plan adopted By Linda CLarke

The Ashburton District took a big step forward yesterday to become one of five official Welcoming Communities in the country. The Ashburton District Council adopted a welcoming plan, developed by the community with help from Immigration New Zealand. It is aimed at fostering connections and integration between newcomers and local community members. The district is now home to people from many countries of

the world as they work in agriculture and industries that boost the town. Ashburton was one of five towns selected to trial the welcoming plan programme. Newcomers community development advisor Ilana Batchelor said adopting the plan was a significant step in the Welcoming Communities journey and to becoming an accredited welcoming community. It had been recognised as a plan of high quality by Immigration New Zealand and those in the community who helped develop it, she said.

Immigration New Zealand has funded Batchelor’s wages this far and council is expected to contribute as the plan is implemented in the future. Immigration New Zealand’s Tony McNeill said it had been an exciting journey as the plan evolved over the past six months. “It is really special and we get to do it first, along with four other centres. “New Zealand is so diverse and getting more diverse – that provides a lot of challenges as we try to bed people down in a new district.” McNeill said it was a plan for

the future and Ashburton was doing an exemplary job. Councillors were unanimous in voting to adopt the plan, councillor Diane Rawlinson saying it would be important to keep the plan from becoming “corporatised”. “We have to be professional but keep it grassroots for the people it is meant to attract.” Mid Canterbury’s work in the welcoming migrant space has been recognised both nationally and internationally and Ashburton will host the national manager of Welcoming Cities Australia, Aleem Ali, on June 22.

In brief More ploughing matches Hard on the heels of ploughing matches in Hinds and Ashburton last weekend, two more events, organised by the Methven and Rakaia ploughing associations, are being held this weekend. First up is the Methven event on Saturday, which is at Bill Burrows’ property on Rakaia Barrhill Methven Road near its intersection with Woods Road. Rakaia’s match is on Sunday at Neville and Marilyn Copland’s Waddells Road property, just out of Chertsey. There are about 30 entrants for the Methven event, with 26 for Rakaia’s. Both matches will feature Silver Plough, vintage and horse categories, while Methven’s will also have a young farmer section. The public is welcome to attend, with the best time being between about noon to 2.30pm.

Poultry enthusiasts are winging their way to Ashburton for one of New Zealand’s biggest bird exhibitions today and tomorrow. The Ashburton Fanciers’ Society are hosting their annual show

at the Ashburton Sports Hall on Tancred Street, with an array of poultry, ducks, bantams and pigeons going under the spotlight. From tomorrow, creatures of the furry variety will also join the show, with space reserved for a number of rabbits and cavies.

Judges will be dishing out prizes to the top entries in each category, including honours, medals and award certificates. Ashburton Fanciers’ Society Secretary Brian Glassey said the public are welcome to come and view the show from 2pm on Fri-

day and 1pm on Saturday. Judging will take place on the morning of each day. The society has held shows every year since they were founded in 1892, and some previous shows have seen over 1000 entries.

RMA breaches ‘not prosecuted’ Fewer than a hundred prosecutions are being carried out under New Zealand’s main environmental law each year, despite thousands of breaches. Now a legal researcher is investigating whether the 27-yearold Resource Management Act (RMA) is having the deterrent effect that any law including criminal offences should. Under the RMA, councils have delegated responsibility for the

everyday management of land, freshwater and other resources, and for ensuring that growth and development occurs within the environmental bottom lines. University of Canterbury College of Business and Law doctoral student Mark Wright said it was striking that the same system used to punish assailants and burglars is also used to punish people breaking RMA rules. Equally, from his experience

as a lawyer prosecuting environmental non-compliance cases, Wright knows the system can play out substantially differently in RMA cases. “There is a difference between the law itself and how it works in practice,” he said. “There are thousands of breaches of the RMA every year, yet under 100 prosecutions a year.” Further, he said, every coun-

cil had a different approach to prosecution. Some of the smaller councils would never consider taking a prosecution, he said. “What it leads to is a system where there are not many prost being undertaken, and a ecutions lot of variation between regions.” Using deterrence theory, Wright was exploring how well the current system is working to discourage breaches of the rules. - NZME

A car taken from a man after he was assaulted and dumped at a service station in Northland has not been found and police are appealing to members of the public for any sightings. A 23-yearold man as dumped at the Mobil service station in Kamo about 9.15am yesterday after he was assaulted near the entrance to the Denby Golf Club in Tikipunga. Police say the man was assaulted there and then driven to Kamo and then his car was taken. The car is described as a white 1995 Honda Civic with the registration of TH8868. - NZME

Streaker fined $1000 A naked streaker who invaded the pitch during an NRL rugby league match in Christchurch on Saturday denied alcohol was behind his actions, telling a court yesterday, “I probably would’ve done it sober as well”. Royce Wilbur Edwards, 21, sprung from the stands at a packed AMI Stadium to run onto the field during the NZ Warriors vs Manly Sea Eagles game. He slipped on the wet grass before he was tackled by security guards. Yesterday at Christchurch District Court, the labourer from Rolleston admitted behaving in a disorderly manner and was fined the maximum $1000. Edwards told police he’d been drinking alcohol when he took his clothes off and ran across the field. - NZME

Calling all bird lovers to special talk By Katie todd

Locals will get a glimpse into the everyday struggles of species like Ashburton’s black-billed gulls during a special talk next week. Researcher Claudia Mischler will be making a presentation to the Ashburton branch of Forest & Bird entitled: From the Arctic to the sub-Antarctic and a little in between: life amongst seabirds in some of the remotest places, and a comparison to the life of New Zealand birds. All bird lovers are invited to come along and glimpse her fascinating photographic journey – and see how our native seabirds stack up against international species, Forest & Bird said. Mischler grew up in Canada but has researched birds in New Zealand for the past five years. She spent the first three and a half years based out of Blenheim working for a consultancy undertaking seabird research on various species, such as the black petrel, flesh-footed shearwaters, blackbilled gulls, black-fronted terns, and Chatham Island albatross. She is also about to complete her Masters, which has been focused on the population status and genetics of the black-billed gulls that make themselves known in Ashburton each September. Mischler’s talk will be held from 7.30pm at the Sinclair Centre next Tuesday, and members and nonmembers are welcome to join. ‘Heartbreaking’ kiwi killing devastating Conservationists are disgusted at a person whose dog killed two kiwi that were a crucial part of a breeding population – and then deliberately cut off one of their transmitters. The two Coromandel brown kiwi were found dead at Port Charles on the Coromandel two months ago but it is only now that the transmitters and straps have returned from DNA testing, that it has been con-

firmed dogs were the cause of death. Helicopter crashes; five injured A helicopter with five people onboard crashed just before 9am yesterday at Ngamatea Station between Waiouru and the Kaweka Range, on the Napier-Taihape Road. Three rescue helicopters from Hawke’s Bay, Palmerston North and Taupo picked up five people and took them to hospital. One male, in his 40s, remains in a critical condition in Hawke’s Bay Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit. One male, in his 40s, is now in a serious but stable condition. One male, in his 30s, is in a serious condition. Two more patients with minor injuries were assessed by St John upon arrival at Bridge Pa Aerodrome by rescue helicopter, and did not require hospital treatment. The Transport Accident Investigation Commission has sent three investigators to the crash site. They were expected to arrive at the site this morning. The Commission has opened an inquiry into the crash. The Chief Investigator of Accidents, Captain Tim Burfoot, says the accident involved a Hughes MD600N helicopter. “The helicopter was on a commercial operation with five people on board when it crashed,” Capt. Burfoot said. The helicopter has been extensively damaged, he added. The Commission opened an inquiry when it believes the circumstances of an accident or incident had – or was likely to have – significant implications for transport safety, or when the inquiry may allow the Commission to make findings or recommendations to improve transport safety. Rescue Co-ordination Centre NZ co-ordinated the response to the incident. At 8.50am, RCCNZ received an alert from the ELT distress beacon on board, providing a location at Oturua Stream. The helicopter was undertaking a commercial survey operation in the area. RCCNZ Search and Rescue Mission Co-ordinator Dave Wilson said another helicopter from the same company was initially sent to provide a fast, initial response to determine the situation, with the Greenlea Rescue Helicopter from Taupo arriving on scene soon after to provide medical care. “Distress beacons can summon life-saving help to people who need it and get them to hospital faster. In this particular case, the alert from the distress beacon was the only notification that the aircraft had crashed.” One person was in a critical condition, two were in a serious condition and two others had suffered less serious injuries. RCCNZ tasked two additional rescue helicopters with intensive care paramedics; one from the Hawkes Bay Helicopter Rescue Trust and the Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter. All patients have been taken to hospital. - NZME

Last weekend’s inaugural Little Miss Independence pageant and talent show was a great success, organisers say, with around 200 people attending the event at the Tinwald Memorial Hall on Saturday night. Held to help Mid Canterbury’s Filipino community celebrate Philippines Independence Day, the event involved 14 girls between the ages of five and 10 years, who were competing to win the Miss Independence crown. They wore cultural costumes, demonstrated a talent they had been working on and wore gowns. However organiser Pilar Ward said the real focus was on helping the girls gain confidence, make new friends and have fun, while also learning about their culture and Independence Day history. In keeping with the theme of co-operating with others and having fun, no one went home empty-handed, as all 14 girls won a prize. In the lead-up to the evening, other events involving the girls were held over previous weekends, including tree planting at Argyle Park and a picnic. his week was a busy one for central banks around the world. The Federal Reserve announced that it will raise the target range for its federal funds rate by 0.25 per cent, making the new range 1.75 per cent-2.00 per cent. This increase puts it above New Zealand’s OCR for the first time in 18 years. The Fed also suggested two more increases are likely this year, commenting that the economy is doing very well, noting solid gains in employment, household spending, and business investment could continue. This saw treasury yields rise, pushing bond prices lower. US markets held steady after President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed an agreement aimed at establishing a peace regime on the Korean Peninsula. However a lack of detail in the agreement was noted. Meanwhile, the Italian share market surged this week after the Italian Economic Minister, Giovanni Tria, said the new Government has no plans to leave the euro and is seeking to boost growth through investment and structural reforms instead of deficit spending. The latest REINZ figures showed house prices have set a new national price record of $562,000, up 5 per cent. This was driven by strong growth in Tasman and Northland. House prices in Tasman have gone up 16.2 per cent to $612,000,

with the region leapfrogging both Wellington and the Bay of Plenty to become the second most expensive region in New Zealand. Only Auckland, Gisborne and Southland saw a year-on-year price decrease. The NZX 50 continued to hit fresh new highs this week, following a 3.5 per cent gain last week. A number of companies within the benchmark are trading at or near all-time highs, namely Mainfreight, Fisher & Paykel Healthcare and Ryman Healthcare. Scales held its annual general meeting on Wednesday and said that its apple crop was much larger than in recent years, with one third of apples now sold. The company commented that overall pricing has been in line with expectations. Management maintained its earnings guidance for FY18 and said they continue to evaluate potential acquisition opportunities. In corporate news, Restaurant Brands gained after announcing it had entered into a master franchise agreement with Yum! Brands for the continued operation of the Pizza Hut brand in New Zealand. Off the main index, Tegel’s directors and its auditor are in

dispute over the value of the company’s goodwill. The company posted a 24 per cent drop in net profits and Tegel’s directors unanimously recommended shareholders accept a $437.8 million takeover offer from Philippines poultry company Bounty Fresh Foods. However, they point out there is no benefit in accepting the offer early, but if shareholders do, they will still be entitled to the 4.1 cent per share dividend. Cinema software company Vista Group announced they have signed an agreement with Les Cinémas Pathé Gaumont, leaders of exhibition theatre in France. Les Cinémas Pathé Gaumont who also operate in the Netherlands, Switzerland and Belgium, plan to roll-out the software in 2019. The company’s share price is up 28.82 per cent this year. Across the Tasman, APA Group, an Australian natural gas infrastructure company, received a non-binding takeover offer from a consortium led by Hong Kong’s CK Infrastructure Holdings. The stock jumped 21 per cent on the news. A transaction would be subject to a shareholder vote and approval from relevant regulators, which may be a stumbling block for the deal. Is it really OK TO BUY AP HOUSE?

There is no denying that methamphetamine is a dangerous and insidious drug. Users come from all walks of life and live in all communities and some drug testing companies have claimed that up to 80 per cent of New Zealand homes could contain traces of the drug. However, the recent report from the prime minister’s chief science advisor has pointed out that most people run a very low risk of living in a property with dangerous levels of meth contamination. The May 2018 report from Professor Sir Peter Gluckman found that there was no point in testing a property for meth contamination unless there was a strong suspicion or evidence that it had been used as a meth ‘lab’ or there had been very heavy drug use there. The researchers found no evidence of anyone being harmed from passive use and said there was no adverse health risk of third-hand exposure to methamphetamine residue from smoking found on household surfaces.

If you learn that a property has tested positive for methamphetamine before you make an offer (and you are still interested in buying it), your course of action depends on the level of the result and your appetite for the work required to put it right. You can seek advice from a meth testing and remediation company on the estimated amount of work required for results above 15 micrograms per 100cm2, and negotiate with the seller for an according reduction in price. Alternatively, you can add a condition to your offer asking the seller to clean and decontaminate the property to an agreed acceptable level. Talk to your lawyer before making an offer on a property if you are concerned that it may be affected but you don’t have time to get it tested. They will be able to advise you about including a satisfactory test as a condition of your offer.

According to the report, a house is safe to live in up to a methamphetamine level of 15 micrograms per 100cm2, with no adverse health effects.

Bear in mind that meth testing is not currently regulated in New Zealand. It may be a good idea to research the particular remediation company before you engage them.

When it comes to looking at properties, it’s always better to rely on concrete knowledge or evidence rather than rumour. If you are concerned about a house you are interested in, ask the real estate agent if it has been tested, noting that levels less than 15 micrograms per 100cm2 are safe to live in.

If the local council has been notified (usually by the New Zealand Police) that the property has been used as a site for heavy meth consumption or production, this should be recorded on the Land Information Memorandum (LIM).

It’s nearly time to prune your roses. Depending on where you live late June to mid-August is when to prune. If you’ve never pruned roses before we highly recommend attending one of the New Zealand Rose Society’s free demonstrations. Before you prune, spray your roses with lime sulphur – this knocks off all the leaves and sends them into a dormant state. It also gets rid of diseases like rust, scale and black spot. Next, it’s time to tidy up your asparagus and strawberry patches. Unpicked asparagus spears grow into ferns which can get over a metre tall. Once the ferns are completely brown and dry, trim them off at ground level and put in your compost bin. Weed your bed and mulch it to stop weeds germinating. When the new spears start emerging in early spring or when the weather starts to warm up, you can start applying liquid fertiliser. Now on to your strawberries. Now’s the time to divide your strawberry plants and remove the runners. Your main plant won’t fruit forever so it’s important for it to grow new plants to keep producing a fresh supply of fruit.

June is a good time to plant your garlic. The general rule of thumb is plant on the shortest day of the year (June 21) and harvest on the longest day (December 21). But any time from May until the end of July is fine. It’s also a good month to plant native trees while the soil is nice and wet but not too boggy from winter.

But it’s equally as important to remove the surplus runners/new plants so they don’t compete for nutrients from the soil with your main patch.

And now for maintenance. The weather is getting cooler now – so remember to check your cauliflowers aren’t getting hit by the frost, and fold over their leaves to protect them.

Here’s how to do it: split your strawberries and keep the new plant off the runner (the little stems running off that go on to make new plants) closest to your main clump.

If you’ve already planted your broad beans, check they aren’t falling over. If they are, stake them by putting a stake at each end of your crop and wrapping string around them all.

Remove the other runners and new plants and dispose of them or grow your strawberry supply by planting them elsewhere in the garden.

Don’t forget to cut all the leaves off your heleborus, otherwise known as winter roses – this will help produce taller flower stems.

The Swiss army knife of SUVs I suzu is as serious off-road brand as you can get. And by serious I mean they have two models, and both are aimed at the tough rugged outdoors of New Zealand. They have the D-Max Ute, which comes in 6 model variants, and the MU-X, their 7 seater SUV. Isuzu are well known and loved to those who live outside the big smoke. However, most of us who live in the cities are surprised to hear that this brand called Isuzu are as popular as Ford and Toyota in New Zealand’s ute and outdoor market. And Isuzu are pushing hard to make big waves in the SUV market with their MU-X. Unlike the shared platform D-Max that has six model variants, the MU-X only has the one. There are also no options, it comes fully loaded. It’s powered by the Isuzu 4JJ1 3.0L engine, which produces 130kw and 430 Nm @ 2000 > 2200 rpm. The transmission is an Aisin 6-speed with sequential shift and brake shift lock electronically controlled, with Adaptive Grade Logic Control and fuel-saving lockup torque converter. This is paired with a Terrain Command control with ‘shift on the fly’ 4H-2WD selection at up to 100km/h. For off roading, the MU-X is fitted with plenty of rugged off-road protection, which includes front steel plate skid/

splash shield and steel plate guards. Safety features include Traction Control System (TCS) and Electronic Stability Control (ESC), and a reversing camera. Six airbags come as standard; dual front, front side and full-length curtain – to keep

passengers on both sides of the car safe. Front seatbelt pre-tensioners pull back when the airbags are activated, for extra safety. On the outside, it includes 18-inch alloy wheels, side steps, roof rails, and Bi-LED projector headlamps with Daytime Running Lights (DRL). The interior comes with 7 leather seats, which can fold flat for additional cargo space. Also included is a Multi-Information Display for the driver, Touch screen Sat Nav GPS, Premium Audio sound system includes USB and Bluetooth connectivity plus audio streaming. There’s eight speakers and Live Surround Sound combined with a 10.2” roof mounted rear monitor. And if you want to customise the MUX, Isuzu has a few accessories available. When you start driving the MU-X, you realise you are sitting on what seems like the second story of this vehicle. It’s very high off the ground, and you from time to time think that this vehicle is just massive. But the visibility all around is brilliant; big side mirrors, and a great vantage point from the high driver’s seat. You soon forget about its size and quickly become very secure and confident behind the wheel.

Much like the D-Max the MU-X is a very easy vehicle to drive. Out of all the serious off road vehicles, Isuzu seems to be one of the few that have managed to give you all you need to go off the beaten track, while still leaving you with a great driving vehicle on the roads. You notice this when you are up around 100 km/h, the MU-X is flat and stable, and even in some long corners, you do not get the body roll some other trucks have, which instinctively makes you slow down. Off road, the MU-X is hard to beat, I did not take this model off road, but I have taken other MU-X and D-Max models deep in the rugged terrain of New Zealand in the past. And straight from the dealership, these vehicles are very impressive, even for someone who might be nervous about off roading. The 4WD system is second to none, and you really have to push this vehicle a long way before you start to reach its limits. I really like this truck, and I call it a truck because the word SUV just seems a bit too soft to describe it. It’s a great looking, 7 seater, 3-ton towing, go-anywhere, tough truck. he countdown is on to the 96th Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Two weeks ahead of the start of the most famous hill climb in the world, the I.D. R Pikes Peak appeared at the final official test in its final livery and bearing its start number.

Ferrari fetches a cool $99m

he world’s most expensive car has been sold for a reported $US70 million ($NZ99m) to an entrepreneur who made his fortune selling car mats. David MacNeil, who founded WeatherTech, paid the record fee for a Tour de France-winning 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO. Only 39 models of the supercar were built between 1962 and 1964 and the last one to sell cost an estimated $US42m ($NZ59m). It was restored in the UK in the 1990s, but the prestigious car has raced all over Europe and Africa. It won the ten-day Tour de France road rally in 1964 and placed fourth at Le Mans the year before. Mr MacNeil, who’s based in Chicago, has assembled a ultra-rare Ferrari collection. It includes a 1960 Ferrari 250 GT, Berlinetta SWB, a 250 GT Lusso, 275 GTB, 365 GTB/4 Daytona, F40, and F50. Mr MacNeil’s purchase of the 250 GTO puts him on an elite list of owners that includes Ralph Lauren, Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason and British billionaire Lord Anthony Bamford, who owns two of them. James Knight, Group Motoring chairman at UK auction house Bonhams, told CNN: “The Ferrari 250 GTO is the motoring market’s equivalent of Van Gogh’s Sunflowers and a talisman for any top-end collection.” Ferrari historian Marcel Massini has said he expects a 250 GTO to fetch $100 million in the next five years.

The Jaguar E-PACE recognises the approaching driver, based on both a key fob and smartphone Bluetooth signal. Rally a very big deal

ecently this writer was the recipient of a very interesting book – the official souvenir record of the 13th International Veteran and Vintage Rally staged in New Zealand in 1972. Aine Whiting passed on the book, which had been collected by her late husband Norm. Norm had a lifelong interest in anything mechanical and a fascination with ploughing. While Aine isn’t sure how he came by it, she knows the book would have appealed to Norm. And it’s easy to see why. Along with historical information about vintage and veteran motoring, the book features some wonderful photos of vehicles which took part on what was a huge event. The 13th International Rally was the second such event to be held in this country. Seven years earlier entrants had come from around the world to take part in the 6th International, or as it is often called the Haast Rally. It was the first of the series to be held outside Europe and our people, landscape, roads and scenery made a lasting impres-

sion and resulted in requests to return. In 1972 there were more than 750 entrants in 18 classes, competing over 20 alternative routes, all of which lead to Nelson. Those taking part could join a route along the way, and six of the routes travelled through Ashburton. Several local members of the Vintage Car Club including the late Hans van Lith driving his impressive 1929 Nash, took part. The rally brings back memories for local Vintage Car Club Branch Patron Diane Ross. At the time she and Rob did not have an eligible vehicle, but they followed one route and assisted by manning a checkpoint.

Diane says it was wonderful seeing all the cars congregated at Nelson. Along with the fun of being amongst such a large and interesting gathering, two things which happened have remained in Diane’s memory. At the time she was missing a badge for her Chrysler. A fellow enthusiast approached Diane telling her back home in his garage he had just the badge she needed. About three weeks later it arrived in the mail. Racing was one of the activities in Nelson which fascinated Diane. She says at the time she thought and looking back she still thinks the Bugatti driven by the late Bruce Pidgeon looked like a demented bumble bee. It was the first time Diane had seen such a special car racing, or to perhaps put it more accurately, bouncing around a track. The registration process of recording so many entries on so many routes could have been a logistical nightmare for the organisers, but in a perhaps ironical twist they adopted modern technology to record older vehicles. A state of the art Burroughs B500 computer was programmed for printing and statistical purposes and did the job well. The computer had a value of a then staggering $400,000 and took up a lot of space.

How times have changed; these words are being written on a laptop which in comparison size wise is a bit like a pimple on a pumpkin, cost about one fifth of one per cent of that price and probably has several hundred times more power. Aine Whiting has very kindly passed on a treasure – one of those books which reveals more each time it’s opened – a book which has already brought back many memories and will continue to do so.

A weekend wacky and wonderful

ong weekends like our recent Queen’s Birthday holiday give people the opportunity to do all sorts of things. Sometimes wacky and sometimes wonderful, sometimes both. Several decades ago the Christchurch Branch of the Vintage Car Club started a Queens Birthday weekend tradition, which far from becoming mundane, continues to attract increasing numbers of competitors of all ages. Competitors isn’t quite the right word, because there aren’t really any prizes, although some lucky if that’s the correct description, entrants will have their names drawn out of a hat and given the job of organising the following year’s event. Very democratic! Over the years starting places for this two-day event beginning on Saturday have varied, this year it commenced in Oamaru by tradition Saturday night is spent in Fairlie. This year part of Sunday was devoted to a gymkhana held at Pete’s Patch, a nearby farm. The route often includes challenging offroad sections and only vintage or veteran

vehicles can take part. In a way it’s like going back in time to conditions which were predominant when the vehicles were new. It’s known as the Irishman Rally because in its early years it went to Irishman Creek Station, the farm run by Bill Hamilton, recognised as father of the jet boat. This year several hearty local enthusiasts, including David and Marion Oakley, were among the 165 entrants who took part and had a lot of fun. Travelling in their Ford Model A Tudor, the Oakleys said their car and (with a few minor exceptions) all the vehicles performed well, handling at times rugged terrain without too much bother. A hoar frost throughout the Hakataramea Valley made that part of the journey spectacular. The Irishman Rally is just one of a variety events organised by vintage motoring enthusiasts. Another of local significance is next year’s National South Island Easter Rally being hosted here and coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Ashburton Branch. An enthusiastic organising committee has planning well under way for that event.

he Polestar 1 is set to make its first dynamic appearance at the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed from 12-15 July. Festivalgoers will see prototype #004 of the two-door Electric Performance Hybrid charge up the famous hill climb, set in the grounds of Goodwood House in West Sussex, England. Driven by Polestar chief test driver Joakim Rydholm, the drive is part of the continued global launch of the Polestar brand and the Polestar 1. It’s an opportunity for enthusiasts and the public to get a closer look at the design and performance of the car as it continues its real-world performance, chassis and suspension-testing programme. “I am really excited to drive the Polestar 1 prototype up the hill at Goodwood,” enthuses Rydholm. “Driving the hill climb has been a long-time ambition, and to be able to do it in the same prototype in which we’ve spent so many months of development is truly special.” Polestar will also be present in the manufacturer area. In contrast to the camouflaged prototype, two production-specification Polestar 1 cars will be on display, representing yet another opportunity to experience the car in detail ahead of the first customer deliveries in 2019. Thomas Ingenlath, Chief Executive Officer of Polestar, comments: “I’m thrilled that we’re going to be at the Goodwood Festival of Speed – it’s everything a big car event should be: full of passion, enthusiasm and a chance to get really close to the cars. “The response to the Polestar 1 from the UK and northern Europe has been fantastic and it’s a wonderful opportunity to meet so many people who share our passion for Polestar and the future of the brand.”

■ Marinade: Place all the ingredients in a small bowl and whisk to combine.

QUICK RECIPE

600g Quality Mark sirloin or rump, cut into strips (about 3cm x 1cm) 200g dried noodles 1/2 head broccoli, cut into florets and sliced 150g green beans, sliced 125g button mushrooms, sliced 3 spring onions, trimmed and very finely sliced 1 red chilli, deseeded and very finely sliced 1T sesame seeds, toasted Marinade 2.5cm piece fresh ginger, peeled and finely grated 1 clove garlic, crushed 2T peanut oil 1T rice wine vinegar 2T light soy sauce

■ Beef: Place the beef strips in a non-metallic dish and pour over the marinade. Cover and leave to marinate for about 10 minutes. ■ Meanwhile, cook the noodles in boiling water until tender, about 6 minutes. Drain and refresh under cold water. Add a dash of oil and toss to prevent them sticking together.

■ Heat a wok until hot. Add a good dash of oil, and when hot, add half the beef and stir-fry for 1-2 minutes. Transfer to a plate and repeat with remaining beef. Keep remaining marinade. ■ Add another dash of oil to the wok. Add the broccoli and beans and stir-fry until partially tender. (Add a dash of water or stock if the vegetables look dry and are colouring too quickly). Add mushrooms, spring onions and chilli. Stir-fry until all vegetables are just tender, about 5 minutes. Return the beef and remaining marinade to the wok, toss quickly then serve immediately. ■ Place the noodles in a large shallow serving bowl. Peters gets his 15 minutes T

he man who arguably has no right to hold one of the highest positions in New Zealand, is about to take hold of it. Luckily for us, or unluckily depending on what way you might be looking at it, Winston Peters’ reign at the top of the country is only set to be short-lived while Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern heads off to give birth to her child. Winston is a little bit like that cousin in your family who all the older family members seem to be drawn toward through their smooth talking and wily ways. But the younger family members generally see right through

the facade and know exactly what’s really going on. In many ways, the leader of the New Zealand First Party is a wily old fox with more than just the one trick up his sleeve. He lurks around the chicken coop that is otherwise known as parliament in the hope that one of his prey will make a false step and then he pounces, irrelevant

of the consequences of that action. And you’ve got to admire him for it. From the day he first stepped into the public domain as a politician, Peters has been a straight shooter. He’s never held back, his position has always been clear and he’s never minded too much about what bridges he might burn on the way down the path that has been his incredible political career. With his time at the top set to only be fleeting, Winston’s chance to make a real impact on the country will be minimum, but there will be more than just a few

nervous sections of the population watching his every move with more intensity than they normally would. In fact it’s easy to imagine how a resounding number of Kiwis will be feeling extremely uncomfortable. Last year’s election showed that perhaps Peters’ popularity around the traps was dwindling. Peters’ party, New Zealand First, lost three of its seats in parliament. And of course, Peters himself was the holder of one of the three seats chopped. Yet here he is about to embark on a stint as Prime Minister of our country and everyone,

including the media, will be on close watch. Peters, as has been written before, is a master of misleading the media and on more than one occasion he’s led a reporter on a merry old chase for nothing, other than personal enjoyment. This irks some people, while for others it’s almost as enjoyable as it must be for Peters to create. What the New Zealand First leader is, though, is clever. He knows what he wants and he also knows how to get it. And he knows how to not give anything away. A dangerous trait for a man who’s about to be in charge of this country.

expanding probe into Russia’s election meddling as he lashed out at a top Justice Department official overseeing the inquiry. A St. Anthony, Minnesota, police officer was acquitted of manslaughter in the fatal shooting of Philando Castile, a black motorist who had just informed the officer that he was carrying a gun about whether words can kill. Tap fizzy on the head A

national news story caused quite a debate this week. Growing support for ‘cigarette-style’ warnings on fizzy drinks. A proposal to put “cigarettestyle” warnings on sugary drinks in a bid to combat obesity, type 2 diabetes and poor dental health is gaining support from around New Zealand. The New Zealand Dental Association is pushing for graphic images of rotten teeth to be put on fizzy drink packaging. But the Beverage Council says the proposal is ridiculous and “alarmist”. So what do the locals think? Melissa: While it didn’t work with cigarettes, if there was that picture on the bottle some kids might actually say “no thanks I’ll have water”...my 5&6 year olds were just talking about teeth this morning and how some kids teeth are black with decay or yellow, they know why, mixture of sugar and not brushing teeth. Mary: Water is free for goodness sake, turn on a tap. Nigel: No. Parents should have a ‘don’t be dumb shits when it comes to your children’s health’ sign on their foreheads. Steve: What’s the point? It hasn’t worked on smoking so why bother. Maybe if water was more affordable and taxes sky rocketed on fizzies then people would be more likely to ease up on buying them. When you can pay 90c for a 1.5ltr bottle of fizz but pay $3 for 500ml of water...... well. Shaun: Waste of time. Will only increase the price. The issue with increasing the price is that you can buy 2lts cheaper than you can buy 600mls. So if you are short on cash you will actually consume more of it. Sylka: No I disagree if we want to buy it let us we don’t need to c that shit on the bottle id honestly just peel it off. Several people answered with a resounding YES! I agree with them. I’m not suggesting it is the magic bullet but if it plays a part in a reduction in rotting teeth and obesity, then bring it on. I also agree with Mary, what’s wrong with water, out of the tap, it’s free. I would love to see our local primary schools (I think you’d be pushing you know what uphill to enforce it at secondary schools) follow the lead of other schools and go fizzy free. Here’s Consumer NZ’s top tips for drinking water: – Don’t let tall tales about dangerous chemicals scare you into buying an expensive water filter – almost all our tap water is safe to drink (97 per cent of our water complied with National Standards for protection against bacteria in 2014). – Whole-home water filters are usually overkill, unless you’ve got problems with hard water. If you want to remove the taste of chlorine, get a jug filter or a filter at the tap. – Don’t believe the marketing hype around sports drinks or vitamin water. The main carbohydrates and electrolytes in sports drinks are just plain-old sugar and sodium.

– The idea that “if you’re feeling thirsty, you’re already dehydrated” is a myth. For healthy adults, thirst will kick in before any of the signs of dehydration. Just drinking when you’re thirsty is fine. – Don’t get sucked in by the health benefits of alkaline water. There’s no evidence it’s any better than tap water. If those tips weren’t enough to sway you the water way, how about this? Our fizzy drinks are among the worst in the world when it comes to sugar content. A Waikato University study has found New Zealand’s fizzy drinks contain more sugar than those in most other Western countries. Dr Gerhard Sundborn said that the findings are further proof a sugar tax is needed in this country. He said the study’s results

weren’t surprising considering New Zealand had the third highest obesity rate for adults in the OECD. Sundborn told Newstalk ZB’s Chris Lynch New Zealand fizzy drinks and juice average oneand-a-half-times more sugar than Canada, Australia and the US. One and a half times! When Shaun Bovey and Craig Dwyer took over as the coaches of Hampstead’s senior rugby team this season, they knew they had a huge mountain to climb. They’d taken over a side that had spent the past few seasons stuck down at the bottom of the heap, struggling to win a game. You could just about count the number of games they’d won in recent years on one hand. They knew the only way to turn the club around was with a hang of a lot of work, but they were determined to do it. Last weekend, that work finally paid off. Hampstead won their first game of the season, a nail-biter against Hurunui, 27-26, in front of their long-suffering, passionate home crowd. And Bovey wasn’t even there to see it. “You wouldn’t actually believe it, of all weeks, I actually couldn’t be there because I had a family event on. “So for the big one we actually won, I wasn’t actually there,” Bovey said. It was the first game he’d missed all season. “I get a feeling I might get the ‘don’t come Monday’,” Bovey joked. Bovey and Dwyer took on the challenge of coaching Hamp-

stead because they loved the game, and hated to see a club, or a side, struggling. They were determined to turn it around, but it was a case of baby steps. Bovey came to Hampstead from leading the Rakaia senior Bs and remembered his interview for the Hampstead job. “We just said to them this is never going to be an overnight thing.

“It’s not just rebuilding a team, it’s rebuilding a club and its culture,” Bovey said. They needed to get the faith back in not just the players, but also the community, and try and attract sponsors, because, Bovey said, they weren’t exactly lining up at their door. “We said to them at the start it’s a two- to three-year plan to get that team going and we are really pleased with where we are at the moment,” Bovey said. “We are just absolutely stoked we have got these guys to where

When you lost game after game it could be hard to keep your heads up and believe that you could actually do it, Bovey said. “A big part of it for us has been the belief and we had a meeting with them the week before the Hurunui game and it was about instilling that belief in them that they could win, and having that trust and respect in each other,” Bovey said. Bovey and Dwyer set out to teach their side how to play modern rugby with structure and discipline. Bovey said on paper, Hampstead should have been a good side. A team of largely Pacific Island players, they had plenty of natural flair, but natural flair without structure was no good. Hampstead was a young side compared to many in the competition, Bovey said. That was good because if those players stuck around through this building stage, Hampstead would be a force to be reckoned with in senior rugby in three or four years, Bovey said. The challenge, though, was holding on to those players and the best way to do that was to win. It was easier to keep players coming back if they played for a winning side.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen has compared head injuries in rugby union to a car crash, believing sometimes they’re simply nobody’s fault. Hansen found himself once again defending his team’s discipline as they build towards the second test. Questions about the skull fracture suffered by French winger Remy Grosso in the first test riled Hansen yesterday. He has maintained his forwards Sam Cane and Ofa Tu’ungafasi were unlucky to connect with the head in a double tackle which earned nothing more than a penalty. - AAP

On May 5 Westlake Boys’ 1st XV hosted Rangitoto College’s 1st XV in a clash of North Harbour’s biggest rugby schools, but it was the pre-match haka challenges that was the talking point. Viewers on social media slammed both schools’ efforts with many saying they should “never do a haka again”, and should “leave it to Māori”. “Wow ... Debut for Radrardra Former Parramatta NRL star Semi Radradra will make his rugby union test debut for Fiji in their Pacific Nations Cup clash against Georgia in Suva tomorrow. Radradra, who was a standout on the wing for the Eels and now plays his club rugby for Toulon in France, will start at outside centre. Fiji coach John McKee said Radradra had been in outstanding form for Toulon in the Top 14 club competition this season and for the Barbarians team that beat England at Twickenham. Local bowlers triumph There was double delight for Ashburton indoor bowlers on the mats at the EA Networks Centre yesterday with both national titles going to teams featuring players from the district. Highly decorated player, Michael Lawson teamed up with former Ashburton player Simon Thomas and Otago’s Daniel French to work their way through to, and win the final of the Open triples competition – much to the delight of a large contingent of local supporters at the venue to take in the action. Just metres away from where Lawson and his team-mates were playing, Mark Sheard, Joyce Cleghorn and Helen Rennie were matching his effort on their way to winning the corresponding Masters event – capping an incredible day for the Ashburton district. In the open event, Lawson and his side had to fight off the chal-

lenge of some stern competition to make the final, but played consistent all day and Thomas, who skipped the team, produced some big shots when they were required – especially in the final against Mark Appleby, Robert Abraham and Kirstyn Harrison from Hawke’s Bay. Lawson is the Ashburton Indoor Bowls Association president, and also the vice president of New Zealand Indoor Bowls, so his role this week has already been immense off the mats, but yesterday he made his impact on them. It was his second national triples title, having won the event at Blenheim back in 2006. Grant Wilson, Fiona Keegan and Murray Bassett made their way through to the last 16 in yesterday’s competition while Matt Markham, who played with James Sullivan and Jeremy Markham were defeated in the final 32.

Sheard’s effort to win his second national title for the week after he claimed the singles on Sunday, continued his huge run of form. He and Rennie were beaten semi-finalists in the pairs on Tuesday and down the scorecard in yesterday’s final, he had to pull out all the stops, helped ably by some strong early bowls from Cleghorn and Rennie. The Masters section yesterday was littered with Ashburton sides, with Martin Nordqvist, Jim Stewart and Jenny Nordqvist and also Winston Lee, Cecil Tubb and Bill Allnut winning their way through to the quarter-finals. John Cuthbertson and Kevin and Gaylene Smith were defeated by Sheard in the last 16 while Geoff Laird, Maurice Sunbeam and Bernice Laird, Barry, Graeme and Neill Chapman and Donald Bell, Maureen Eaden and Neill Chapman were all defeated in

the first round yesterday morning. The victory will assure Sheard the title of Player of the Tournament in the Masters event section no matter what he does in the final event of the week, the fours, which begins today. In the open event, Lawson will be out to grab himself another title, and go one better in the event than he did last year. He teams up with French, Matt Markham and Keri Te Tamaki. Sheard will team up with Gaynor and Lester Hurst and also Rennie as he looks to make it three for the week in a Masters section with plenty of Ashburton names involved. Following the qualifying stages both the North and South Island teams for the Inter Island clash, which is also being held in Ashburton in August, will be named with a number of local players in contention for selection.

Amelia Kerr’s stunning batting performance in Dublin yesterday is sure to lead to a reassessment of her future direction in the game. Kerr’s rise to prominence as a teenage prodigy rested, at least in the public domain, on her clever leg spin. Batting, from the outside, seemed a sidebar. But not to the Tawa College schoolgirl, whose first love in cricket was, and is, her batting. Not even her warmest admirers would have foreseen 232 not out against the hapless Irish coming. Opening the batting in a notable promotion up the order, it set up a 305-run belting, locked in a 3-0 series sweep and left her the leading performer in the series with bat and ball. Her ODI batting average has zoomed to 67.66 and having taken 36 wickets in 20 matches at 18.3 apiece has laid the platform for what promises to be a stellar career. Back at school, from which she’s taken a break for New Zealand’s tour to Ireland and England, to be followed by a stint in English women’s cricket’s T20, you’d imagine they’d have considered taking a day off, or at least renaming June 14, Amelia Kerr Day. Kerr’s start in cricket was playing with the boys. She got a dispensation to play in Tawa’s first XI, the sole female given that release. “That was the best practice for me growing up,” she said. Cricket is in her blood, and remembers playing the game from about six. Her grandfather Bruce Murray was a test opener in 13 tests from 1968-71 (on one memorable occasion in India, Murray, fielding at third man, had a banana lobbed in his direction; he picked it up and ran towards the middle to let the umpires know. The bowler didn’t see him waving his arms, bowled the ball and the batsman top edged it to where Murray, running in, clutched the catch, greeting his team-mates with ball in one hand, banana in the other); Dad Robbie Kerr played first-class for Wellington through the 1990s; Mum Jo represented Wellington in the late 1980s. “The biggest thing for me was I always wanted to represent my country,” she said. “Definitely in the future I’d love to be an allrounder and bat in the top four. That will take time, because we have an established top four, but that’s for the future.” After yesterday it might not take as long as that. She had been unaware of the record, could hear ground announcements over the loudspeakers but couldn’t hear what they were because of the clapping. The games at 3.00am I am a nocturnal being who prefers to watch obscure cycling races instead of sleeping at normal hours, but my long-standing theory of 3.00am being the worst time to consume sport again applies to this World Cup. Most people could fairly comfortably either stay up for the midnight game or rise early for the 6am contest, but the 3.00am games are smack bang in the middle of unproducitivity. Banish these games to hell.

Cup – they’re comfortably in the second tier of favourites in Russia – there’s always a bit of schadenfreude to go around when they get knocked out. They do have a fairly easy path to the quarter-finals this time around, but that hasn’t stopped them from glorious collapses in the past. God, let’s just hope Raheem Sterling isn’t in any way involved.

The famous rematch of the 7-1 drubbing could come as early as the round of 16, which would be fittingly anticlimactic for a game which is impossible to live up to expectations. Unless Brazil get revenge by absoluting battering the Germans, there’s no way it will be as good as the 2014 edition, and it will probably end with a dour 1-0 German win. Watching a replay of the 7-1 game would rank ahead a good 75 per cent of group games in terms of watchability. - NZME

There’s no real Group of Death at this World Cup (Group A is absolutely the Group of Life), but the highest quality of football is likely to be on display in Groups C and D. In Group C, France are the favourites to advance but have a touch of their usual flakiness, with Peru and Denmark likely fighting it out for second spot. Australia seem a bit overmatched, so if you’re a fan of watching the Aussies lose on the big stage, Group C might be for you. In Group D, Argentina could get a stern test from the exciting Croatian and Nigerian squads, while everyone’s favourite Euro 2016 darling is back – Iceland, who have the added bonus of now being the focal point of a whole bunch of bad arguments involving New Zealand football.

Van der Eik’s Team Donkey took on Farmers Corner in the competition’s latest round and came away with a win.
