Murder victim ‘a tragic, sad loss’ She was the teenager whose body was found in a vacant house in South Auckland and is now the subject of a homicide investigation. But to her loved ones, Demetrius “Demi” Pairama was an extraordinary young lady who loved the arts, performing in her kapa haka group and most of all, her whanau. The 17-year-old was on Thursday officially named by police as the victim of a homicide in the suburb of Mangere this week. It is thought she had lain dead at the Housing New Zealand house, on Buckland Road, from last Saturday. Her body was discovered by authorities on Sunday and removed from the property this week. Family and friends have paid tribute to the teen, who was a student at Northland College in Kaikohe. Former principal Jim Luders, who finished at the school at the end of term one, said Demi was a high needs student who was very much loved. “We are absolutely shattered at this news. We put a lot of love and care into her here in Kaikohe. “She was a high needs student requiring sensitive support which she repaid with boundless smiles and energy. “A very tragic and sad loss.” An aunt, Christine Peterson Whiu, said there were tears when they received the news of

the tragedy involving a girl she dubbed “our beautiful niece”. “For us, Demetrius was a quiet, go-with-the-flow young girl who loved kapa haka, singing and arts and crafts. “She was very creative but mostly she loved her whanau,” she said. “Through some people’s eyes, she was different – and this would determine the way they acted towards her, which was very sad.” Peterson Whiu said people’s opinions tended to change once they sat down and had a chat with Demi, to get to know her better. “They got to know that she was a really nice young lady who just wanted to be treated the same – as equals. “She is a beautiful person whose soul matched her. She will be really missed by many of our whanau.” A homicide investigation continues and police are still working to establish the circumstances that led to the teenager’s death. Police have not revealed how she died, but no one has yet been charged in relation to the death. Detective Inspector Tofilau Fa’a Va’aelua said yesterday: “We are confident that through our inquiries we will ultimately determine what has transpired at this vacant property.” - NZME
A newspaper delivery driver was pursued and attacked by a group of young people after she accidentally clipped one of them with an in-flight newspaper.

A Guardian delivery driver thought she was going to be killed yesterday morning during an assault from a group of youths. Cee Jay Fletcher was tossing Guardian and Press newspapers to Methven properties shortly after 1am when she accidentally struck one of a group of 20-somethings and was pursued, then attacked. Fletcher has delivered newspapers for around six years and was travelling with a colleague in the back seat, training to be her relief driver, when the trouble began in Wayne Place. She said she had called “paper coming, get out of the way”, before throwing the newspaper at a driveway by the youths and accidentally clipping one individual. The group began following Fletcher’s van and when
it stopped about 10 minutes later, pulled open the door and grabbed her. “They were waiting all across the road. They tried to pull me out, and luckily I had my seatbelt on so they couldn’t. I put my arm on the horn, hoping someone might hear and come out,” she said. “I thought I was gonna get killed.” Fletcher attempted to accelerate away and believes she may have run over the youth’s foot as she did so. During the incident she believes items were thrown at her van, as well as a number of newspapers being taken. “There’s been a lot of damage to my van. You can’t even open the driver’s door and the roof is buckled in. They’ve left me with a vehicle that is not reliable” “In fact I’d be surprised if it doesn’t get written off.”
She herself was feeling “pretty sore” through her neck, back and legs yesterday as a result of the attack, which had retriggered an existing medical condition. However, she is thankful for the company of the relief driver, who had done what he could from the back seat to scare the attackers off. “I’d hate to think what would have happened if I’d been out on my own.” Police were yesterday making enquires to locate the people responsible for the attack. Fletcher said the group had been identified, and were not locals. In all her time working as a delivery driver, she had never experienced an attack of that nature, she said. Methven residents have taken to social media to offer their condolences and sympathies to Fletcher.

Original hole-in-oner shares trophy By Matt MarkhaM

The walls of the Tinwald Golf Course are littered with more than 120 names of players who have managed to snare an elusive hole-in-one in the close to 51 years of the club’s history, but there are none more important up there than that of Brian Bradley. Bradley’s was the first, within the first year of the club officially opening, and it just so happens that today is exactly 50 years to the day that he made a slice of Tinwald golfing history. And to mark the occasion, Bradley, who isn’t in the best of health, decided to give back the small trophy he was awarded 50 years ago for the achievement, so it can take pride of place in the club’s trophy cabinets to be seen by golfers for generations to come. “It has been sitting in the cabinet at home, but it deserves to be here,” Bradley said. The small trophy with a golf ball mounted on the top of it was handed over yesterday by Bradley to Tinwald Golf Club president, Chris Hart. Alongside Bradley, was Phil Kenny – who was part of the foursome playing when he hit the magical shot. Bradley and Kenny were joined that day by Kenny’s father, the late Keith and also his brother, Alister. “We were all school boys, playing with our Dad,” Kenny said. “I always remember how Brian used to hit a really clean long ball, we were pretty excited at the time.” At 15 years old, Bradley recalled that back then subs for schoolboys were $2 for a season and there was a bit of disdain among some of the older members of the club that a young fella had been the first to score a holein-one on the course. “There were a few comments about someone who had paid a $2 sub getting there first. “We didn’t go into the clubrooms to celebrate or anything though, there were no beers or shouting the bar that’s for sure.” Bradley achieved the feat on the then par three sixth hole

which ran alongside the railway track which borders the southern side of the course. That hole is no longer there, but there have been a few recent holes-in-one scored on the same hole number – just at a different part of the course. Tinwald Golf Club president, Chris Hart said it was a special moment for the club to receive the trophy from Bradley, especially considering its part in history.
“Brian’s effort all those years ago is a big part of this club, it’s his name first on the list of players to have hit a hole-in-one, so it’s great that the trophy is going to be in the clubrooms for everyone to see in the future.” Bradley doesn’t play golf anymore, but still has fond memories of his time on the greens and a trip back to the Tinwald Golf Course yesterday to commemorate his achievement 50 years ago was a special moment.

Tony’s a Grand Master of photography Photography captured his heart more than 25 years ago, and now Tony Stewart has achieved the penultimate – Grand Master with the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography. The former teacher talks to Susan Sandys.
“
It’s mind-blowing,” says Ashburton born and bred photographer Tony Stewart. He has just returned from the prestigious 2018 Iris Awards, organised by the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography (NZIPP). The awards were judged in a public forum over a three-day period by panels of national and international judges and announced at a gala black-tie dinner in Wellington on Monday night. The best images receive gold, silver and bronze at the annual awards and a select few photographers, this year just four, receive the penultimate honour of Grand Master. Stewart was among them, making him the first to ever achieve the honour in the NZIPP Canterbury and Westland region. It is something which takes years to do, as entrants need to build up a suite of the gold, silver and bronze accolades. For Stewart, the 48-year-old dad of two who established his Photoshots business in Christchurch 19 years ago, it was a goal which began to come into focus about five years ago. “When you first start off you think it’s [Grand Master award]
so far away, you kind of have this idea when you start, that’s for someone else.” His final elusive gold had been something he was aiming for over the past two to three years. The image which earned him this year’s gold also won the landscape category. It was a triptych of images he took from a boat at Breaksea Sound in Fiordland. “It is a very special place that many Kiwis don’t get to visit,” Stewart said. That meant it deserved special treatment and he transformed his images of the natural landscape, cropping them, converting them to black and white variants, turning them 90 degrees and arranging them as a narrative of three. Stewart first fell in love with photography at the age of 21 while studying at university. It was a hobby which he continued with as he taught in secondary schools and then travelled.
Upon returning from overseas he decided to take a leap of faith and go into photography fulltime, and do a one-year course. “It was just the allure of something creative. Every day I wake up and don’t know what I am going to be doing that day,” he said. “It’s not particularly easy, it sounds glamorous but there’s a lot of computer work.” Daily variety, along with the attraction of getting the next great image, has continued to keep him inspired. He may be capturing a threeyear-old for a child portrait one day and the prime minister at a high-flying function the next. When he established his photography business he began with mainly weddings, whereas today he mostly does commercial work. Bookings each year include some at his old school of Ashburton College, where he shoots school photos and the annual school ball.

The Ashburton Trust Event Centre remained abuzz with excitement throughout day two of the four-day New Zealand Highland & National Championships yesterday.
The Canterbury West Coast championship for competitors under 16 has wrapped up, and the big event – the New Zealand championships – is now underway. An awards ceremony was held yesterday for those that had com-
peted in the junior categories, with trophies dished out to the runner-up and winning dancers in each age category. An opening ceremony then welcomed senior competitors from Auckland through to Southland.
Today and tomorrow, dancers will compete to the melody of songs like the Irish Jig, Irish Hornpipe, Sword Dance and Sailors Hornpipe. Ashburton National and Highland Dancing Association vicepresident Megan Christie said
senior competitors would be vying for New Zealand rankings, from one to 10, as well as a range of cups, trophies and medallions. Entry to watch the event is free and all are welcome. The competition was last held in Ashburton in 2015.

Baby seen sat on driver’s lap in car Shocking footage has emerged of an Auckland mother driving home with her young baby on her lap. On Tuesday at 5.35pm a motorist caught the mother driving with a baby on her lap, sitting between her chest and the steering wheel during peak-hour traffic. The incident, which occurred on State Highway 1 northbound between Penrose and Greenlane, was shared on Facebook leaving social media users shocked. Danny de Hek, the man who created Shocking Auckland Drivers Facebook page, told the Herald he was alarmed at the mother’s dangerous behaviour. “I thought it was a disrespect for everything really. It’s arrogant thinking that’s okay. What planet is she on?” he said. “It’s really shocking. And people have a go at foreign drivers when they come to New Zealand. How about we look at ourselves!” According to NZ Transport Agency, it is the driver’s responsibility to make sure that any child under seven years of age is properly restrained by an approved child restraint that is appropriate for the age and size of the child. “They must not travel in the vehicle if you can’t put them in an approved child restraint. The vehicle’s safety belt on its own is not an approved child restraint,” the NZTA website says. Others took to social media to slam the mother, with some calling her actions a “death sentence” for her baby. “Oh my goodness me! If that airbag went off that kid is dead,” one person said.
“I’d rather my kid cry for a car ride and remain safe than be quiet and dead.” Another commented saying: “Unfortunately, I have seen a few young kids being held by a passenger in the front seat when doing daycare drop off. I certainly know how hard and frustrating getting a child into a car seat can be, but the risk of an accident and what could happen surely outweighs that.” Last month an Auckland man was slammed for driving while a toddler was sat on his lap. A member of the public snapped the driver in West Auckland in June. The man who took the photo said he and his partner were walking past the vehicle when they spotted the family shortly before 1pm. A woman was in the back of the vehicle with another young child. “I could see a child on the driver’s lap. My partner told the woman in the back: ‘You can’t do this, it’s so dangerous’. “She kept saying it was okay, but my partner was telling her it was not okay.” The man said the driver then wound down the passenger window – where another child was seated – and yelled at them. “After he told me to f*** off, that’s when I got my phone out and took a photo.’’ The couple, who took the vehicle’s number plate down, went to the Henderson Police Station to report the incident, in the hopes the driver would be called up for his actions. “It was just crazy,” the man said. – NZME

Attack an affront to everyone I
t’s always sad to hear of someone being attacked while going about their daily business. But when you hear that it’s someone directly involved with what you do in your day-to-day life, then it seems to hit home even harder than any other instance of a similar event. So, when news came through yesterday morning that one of our delivery team had been attacked by a group of people in Methven in the early hours of Friday morning – the entire Guardian staffing team stopped and took stock of what had
unfolded. We have the most utmost respect for all of the people who head out in the dark of the night to deliver our product. They battle it out with some of the most bizarre weather situations from snow, high winds and
flooding, right through to those absolutely toe-biting frosts that we endure during the winter. It’s a pretty thankless task too at the end of the day – and because of the hours of operation, they are usually an unseen hero of what we do here in the newspaper business. But yet without fail, they get the job done every morning – unless there are some extreme circumstances that mean they can’t and in the past year that’s been because of flooding around the district or the usual winter snowfall.
We can produce a paper every day of the week if we want – but if we don’t have the people ready and waiting to deliver it to your front gate each morning, there’s not much point really is there? What unfolded in Methven on Friday morning is a stark reminder that there are people out there who don’t think normally. If the natural reaction of someone is to chase after a person in a car and then confront and attack them after accidentally being struck by a flying newspaper – then they do need serious help. Methven is a busy town at this
time of the year and to hear the police confirm that the group involved weren’t locals was somewhat comforting – but not for the driver in question. They will have been back out on the road this morning, delivering your paper to you to read as would have all of their colleagues around the district who do the same six days a week to get the Guardian and The Press to you. Hopefully, they have done so today without finding any trouble standing in their way as they got the job done.

Bumpy road to wedded bliss BY RACHEL STEWART

no more believe in the existence of a God than I do fairies in the garden. Yet, I will vigorously defend anyone’s right to wholeheartedly believe in either of them. Whatever floats their boat. I take people as I find them. Even if some Christians have not often taken me as they find me. Over the years my gayness has prompted many Christians to feel free to tell me the error of my ways. If I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard the old “hate the sin, love the sinner” line, I’d be rolling in cream and Jodie Foster would be licking it off me as we speak. I like brains and beauty, thanks. But, no, I’m in my 19th year of unwedded bliss with someone even more amazing, and there’s not a drop of cream in the house. Nor will we be ordering a wedding cake any time soon. But if, by some miraculous turn of events, we were to change our minds about partaking in such an historically heterosexual construct originally designed by the church to facilitate women becoming the property of men, we now know that Kath’s Devine Cakes in Warkworth is not the place to go. I reckon I know six things about
Kath. She’s a baker of beautiful cakes, is literate, and a devout Christian. Oh, and she’s also extremely polite. Her email to two women, who inquired about getting their wedding cake made for their nuptials, revealed much. “I do not wish to offend either of you and I thank you for letting me know that it is a same-sex wedding,” she wrote. “Even though as individuals you are both fabulous and amazing people, I must follow the integrity of my heart and beliefs. Our Government has legalised same-sex marriages, but it is not my belief that it is correct, therefore I will not support you and cannot make your wedding cake for you.” Can’t say it more candidly than that, really. Which means the fifth thing I know about her is that she’s honest. A rare commodity these days. Not to be sneezed at. The sixth thing? Well, I reckon she’s a bigot. But, hey, there’s lots of it about. And posting about Kath’s bigotry on Facebook, and talking to the media, only serves to fuel the other side of the bigotry coin. You know, those who loudly reckon she’s somehow evil personified. Those who encourage abuse towards her. Those who can’t see that people are allowed to follow their own beliefs and ethics.
I’m fine with all of it. Why? Because if I wanted to get married, I’d rather know our cake baker feels the way Kath does. Better that than having her accept our order, then sneering behind our backs, while only thinking of the money. The world’s full of that. What it’s not full of is people prepared to follow their personal belief systems, and say no to the money. Not much of that about. Not much at all. And, sure, if your local muffler dealer starts with the anti-gay carry on, and refuses to fix your leaky exhaust, then that would be bad. But, I doubt the muffler dude gives a toss. As Kath’s refusal to serve was directly related to two women marrying each other, it feels more like a direct hit rather than some untargeted homophobic shrapnel spray. For the two women involved in this, get used to bigotry. You shouldn’t have to, but you need to. Kath will not be the first, or last, killjoy you ever meet. There will be many more on the bumpy road to gay wedded bliss, and beyond. Not everyone will approve of your every move and, in the end, you’re just another young couple in love. Happy nuptials! As for the cake, mark my words. There will be a willing baker along any minute more than happy to take your gay dosh.
They may even get to appear backlit angelic by taking no dosh from you and taking the marketing kudos instead. Would that be more acceptable to you than Kath’s unwavering moral code? Because life sure is complicated these days. Who and what we think of as bad sometimes means we can’t see the good for the trees. My hope for Kath is that she does not receive too much hateful discrimination via online harassment, for exercising her right to discriminate. Abuse won’t change her mind. And we all know what the Human Rights Act says about discrimination, but we also know that a person has a right to exercise religious freedom and beliefs. The Act needs some serious work. Or none. Whatever. My advice? Let’s all just put on our big girl pants and throw our heads back and laugh at the state of our world, and all who reside in her. And eat cake. Subcontractors owed $41m About a thousand subcontractors are owed $41 million from construction companies formerly part of the Hawkins Group, liquidators say. In an unusually complex report, covering 10 companies from the group, BDO’s Andrew Bethell and Andrew McKay outline a lattice of $400m in related-party lending and $37.5m owed for retention payments or to trade creditors. A separate report by the same liquidators into related party H Constructions Schools 2 PPP – established to build four schools in Auckland, Queenstown and Christchurch – and H Construction North Island found unsecured third-party creditors were owed another $3.9m. The vast majority of unsecured creditors - a listing of which fills more than 10 pages of the report into the group of 10 – are owed by treasury company Orange H Construction, and two H Construction companies established to respectively manage projects in the north and south islands. Outside of related-party loans payable, assets of the group and school-building company amount
to $2.9m. “It is too early to estimate what funds, if any, will be available for unsecured creditors,” liquidators said in their report. Liquidators were yet to quantify the amount owed to secured creditors but noted they had been informed by receivers that “substantial amounts” were owed to parent McConnell Group – not in liquidation or receivership – under a general security arrangement.

Guardian owner discovers
the magic of the
Fifa World Cup Former Guardian editor Coen Lammers is covering his fifth Fifa World Cup and reports on his travels around Russia with Guardian owner and football novice Bruce Bell.
T
he Fifa World Cup is the biggest sporting event in the world, but it sometimes takes a fresh viewpoint to fully appreciate its beauty and scale. After attending four previous World Cups it has been an eyeopener and refreshing to travel around the Russian World Cup circus with Guardian owner Bruce Bell, who had never seen a major football match in his life. Bruce, however, realised that the Fifa World Cup was the biggest sport show on our planet and was keen to see this event. Travelling to Russia is not straightforward and can be daunting, but by joining forces, Bruce could see the World Cup alongside a veteran, while this writer suddenly had someone to share the experience with during the long trains across the Russian plains. Six months of planning and discussing matches, cities, travel routes, accommodation and modes of transport resulted in a detailed schedule that looked pretty solid, but even the best spreadsheet does not fully prepare you for the realities of travelling during a World Cup in Russia.
One thing that you can be sure of, is that nothing is sure in Russia, and Bruce soon found that out. Our first stop was in the southern city of Samara in the heartland of Russia, close to the border of Kazakhstan. Arriving after a 40-hour haul from Christchurch to a provincial Russian city was a bit of a shock to the system, but Bruce was keen to embrace all that was thrown at him. The first challenge you need to adapt to in Russia is the bureaucracy that has not changed much since the Soviet days. Going through customs, checking into a hotel or flight, boarding a train or getting into a stadium always requires paperwork, passports and lots of loud stamping, so patience is important. Another shock to the system was travelling from near zero degrees in Christchurch to 35°C heat, but being on the banks of the 2kmwide mighty Volga River at least provided a cool breeze, unexpected beauty and the chance for a quick dip, if you were silly enough to brave the brown water. The first match we attended
together was immediately one to remember as Russia took on Uruguay in the biggest match of group A in the brand-new Samara Arena. Samara is the space travel capital of Russia and the stadium is designed like a futuristic spaceship dome. Bruce could hardly believe his eyes and, coming from a staunch rugby background, it was the first of many unexpected ‘wow’ moments during his World Cup. The 2011 Rugby World Cup final was the largest ever sporting event our man from Ashburton had experienced, but hearing 45,000 Russians roaring ROS-SI-YA! ROSSI-YA! for 90 minutes proved a real eye-opener. Especially as the chants continued unabated while the home side was getting thrashed 0-3 by Luis Suarez and his mates. That tribal loyalty is a key difference between New Zealand sporting fans, where most of us tend to follow a team, and overseas football fans who live, suffer and perish with their team. The following 72 hours will be three days Bruce will never forget, because it nearly broke the poor old fella. “Doing” the World Cup is
fantastic, but it is hard work, especially with games spread across a giant nation like Russia. Straight after the Russia match, we stole a few hours’ sleep before racing to the airport to fly to Moscow. With the plane slightly delayed, our tight schedule to make the next match between France and Denmark seemed to be a bridge too far. In our desperation we agreed to an “official” airport taxi company in the terminal who ripped us off for a ride to the city that proved to be about 10 times the usual price. But we were in a rush and no time to worry about the gangster who talked us into that taxi. After dropping our bags at the hotel, we flagged down another taxi to drop us off at a metro station and with minutes to spare we arrived at the giant Luzhniki Stadium, originally built for the 1980 Moscow Olympics, sweat pouring down our backs, trying to keep our cool in the time-consuming security checks. And as it turned out, all that effort was for the most boring match of the tournament, the only 0-0 score in the entire World Cup,
enough for both Denmark and France to advance. Collapsing back at our hotel, we only had a few hours to enjoy our nice beds before we made our way to another taxi, another metro ride to the Kursky train station for the bullet train to the fortress city of Nizhny Novgorod. We arrived at the magnificent stadium to watch our third match in three days, Switzerland v Costa Rica, which was a virtual dead rubber but turned out to be a cracking game with a late 2-2 equaliser to give the noisy Costa Rica fans something to celebrate. The lasting memory in Nizhny for Bruce will not be the football, but the Soviet-style digs we ended up in. Way out in some indistinct industrial area, we opened the door to find rooms that could hardly fit a suitcase. Bruce took a deep breath and said “it is what it is” and, strangely enough, the weird lodgings and their Fawlty Towers-style staff grew on us. The large, scary Russian woman running the ‘hotel’ even provided Bruce with a new name, Bell John, and turned out to have a weird sense of humour.

After a few days catching up on sleep in Nizhny we witnessed the first second-round play-off match where France easily eliminated Uruguay. The games were getting better and so was the company, as Bruce was meeting new people from all corners of the world. At the matches alone he was sitting next to fans from Bangladesh, Bermuda, Uganda, Jamaica, Canada, Brazil, Costa Rica and 14 other nations. And that’s not even counting the dozens of others we encountered on trains, planes, in bars and in the streets. Bruce soon realised that the Fifa World Cup is much bigger and more significant to more people in more countries than he could have possibly imagined. The Fifa World Cup is contested by 207 countries, which is 12 more than the member states of the United Nations. The 2.4 million spectators at the games are just a fraction of the total amount of foreigners roaming around Russia, with hundreds of thousands more travelling with the hope of getting a ticket or just to enjoy the party.

One Australian who grew up in Israel, very appropriately dubbed one of our trips the Train of Babylon, referring to the biblical story in which God tries to confuse his people by making them all speak a different language. He made the reference to our train carriage with Brazilians, Irish, Kiwis, Australians, Peruvians, South Africans, English, Germans, Russians, Argentinians, Mexicans, Americans, Japanese and Chinese fans all travelling to Moscow for the second semi-final. This kind of scene would have surprised and bemused Bruce at the start of his trip, but had now become his new reality of the World Cup. The tournament really kicked into gear back in Moscow when England eliminated Columbia in a penalty shoot-out. That night got Bruce his first taste of the clichéd drunken English football fans as he watched them taunt the poor crying Columbians who had been the best supporters in Russia, which firmly put Bruce’s allegiance with “anyone but England”. Our trip to the next quarterfinal
in Nizhny Novgorod was another cultural experience as we got stuck in the traditional Russian mode of transport, the third-class train carriage, with a few hundred passengers squashed into a sleeper train with three-storey bunks. Bruce desperately tried to zone out, but the oppressive heat and stench created by sweat and people cooking their own food will stay with him for a long time. In Niznhny Novgorod, Bruce became an instant celebrity at a street party ahead of the quarterfinal where France knocked out Uruguay due to his uncanny resemblance to French national coach Didier Deschamps. Numerous selfies and free drinks later, Bruce had even learned a few French chants, but still wonders what they all mean. After yet another unhealthy short sleep, two Aeroflot flights took us to St Petersburg for the first semifinal between Belgium and France. Strangely enough, the city was dominated by tens of thousands of Brazilians who had clearly not expected to lose to Belgium and had booked tickets and accommodation in the Venice of the
north. We watched the Russian fairytale come to an end and felt sad for our hosts who staggered back to their homes in silence, resembling a scene in the Walking Dead series. The compulsory visit to the Winter Palace turned into a game of patience, queuing with tens of thousands of football fans on top of the thousands of locals and other tourists who inadvertently got caught in the World Cup circus. Kiwis are just not used to squeezing through corridors shoulder to shoulder, so we soon escaped back to our own personal bubble out on the street. Our sympathies for that semi were with Belgium, but sadly France was too classy, so we took the train back to Moscow the following morning wondering if England could make it all the way to the final. The 800km train ride took just under four hours on the bullet train and reminded us what we are missing out on in New Zealand. The Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow was pumping when we arrived for England’s clash against Croatia, with thousands of English board-
ing last-minute flights to join the bandwagon. All looked well for them after Kieran Trippier had given them an early lead, but once the Croatians had struck back and took the lead in extra time, that English dream was shattered. Sadly, we witnessed again that their fans struggle to handle their booze and their defeats as a few of them attacked some Brazilians who gave them a slight ribbing. So now we know that France and Croatia will be fighting for the World Cup on Monday morning and Bruce is the envy of a billion fans as he has football’s equivalent of the Willy Wonka’s Golden Ticket in his pocket. Not surprisingly, Bruce says that his view of the game of football and the World Cup will never be the same and that it is impossible to comprehend in New Zealand just how major the event is and what it does to people around the globe. He admits the World Cup has converted him to football and, even though he still loves his rugby, the next Crusaders match at AMI Stadium just won’t be the same.

Horror audition Actress Mira Sorvino says she was tied to a chair and gagged with a condom a director pulled out of his pocket during an audition when she was just 16 years old. The Romy and Michelle actress alleged to The HFPA in Conversation podcast she had been propositioned multiple times throughout her career, and that her friends were told having sex with people for roles was the norm. Sorvino, now 50, claims the condom incident happened at one of her first auditions, the Daily Mail reports. Sorvino did not name the casting director or the movie she was auditioning for.

Group snaps selfies in front of dying men
As the victims of a horrific crash lay dying on the road, a group of bystanders gathered around – but instead of helping they started taking videos and selfies in front of the bloody scene. The three men, aged between 25 and 30, were riding a motorcycle in Rajasthan, India when they were hit by a school bus. A group of onlookers gathered at the scene but not one person attempted to administer first aid to the victims, who were all labourers at a concrete
factory. One of the men died instantly but the other two writhed in agony for nearly 30 minutes as the group snapped pictures of their dying moments, according to The Telegraph India. Photos and videos of the horrific incident circulated on social media, with one clip showing the injured men lying in pools of blood and begging for help as about a dozen men stand around them. The victims were later identified as Parmanand, Gemra Ram and Chandra Prakash.
Local police have condemned the behaviour of the men saying no attempts were made to help the victims or transport them to hospital. When emergency services finally did arrive the two men who were still alive, Gemra Ram and Chandra Prakash, were taken to hospital. Unfortunately both men succumbed to their injuries, with one man dying on the way and the other later in hospital. Police said that if help had been called sooner, the two could have survived.
“They lay unattended for nearly half an hour. One died on the spot, another in a hospital and the third on way to Jodhpur from Barmer,” local police officer Manohar told the publication. “It was against humanity. Those who were present should have helped them but instead one of them was busy taking a selfie video.” People on Twitter lashed out at the bystanders and called for them to be held responsible for their cruel actions. - NZME
Abuse claims ‘unfathomable’ Whitney Houston’s mother says allegations that her superstar daughter and her son were molested by her niece, Dee Dee Warwick, are “unfathomable.” In a statement to People magazine on behalf of herself and niece, singer Dionne Warwick, Cissy Houston revealed they first learned of the claims two days before the documentary Whitney premiered in May. In the film, Whitney Houston’s longtime assistant said the singer told her that cousin Dee Dee Warwick molested her as a child and Whitney’s oldest brother also claimed he, too, was molested.

Arrest warrant issued for notorious conman
An arrest warrant has been issued for a notorious trickster who poses as a commercial pilot to rip off his victims. Dubbed the Catch Me If You Can conman, Barry John Faulkner, 69, from Paddington in Brisbane’s inner west and Sydney’s Surry Hills, was due in the District Court in Brisbane yesterday for a hearing for allegedly breaching a suspended sentence imposed by the District Court in Southport in 2005. He allegedly breached the sentence when he was convicted of scamming $3500 in cash from Bernard Baggetto on January 11, 2008, The Courier Mail reports. In court yesterday, Faulkner’s lawyer Brendan Ryan told Judge Jennifer Rosengren that Faulkner was
Barry John Faulkner sick “in bed” in his flat in Surry Hills in Sydney, so could not come to court. Ryan tendered a report from Surry Hills GP Rad Naidu, but Judge Rosengren said the report by Dr Naidu “doesn’t tell us much” about Faulkner’s
condition. Ryan said Faulkner had suffered a stroke in April when he was released from Arthur Gorrie prison, and was hospitalised in Royal Brisbane Hospital. He also had a second stroke shortly afterwards and was admitted to a hospital on the Gold Coast, Ryan said. Judge Rosengren issued an arrest warrant citing “the lack of sufficient medical evidence as to his current circumstances” and Faulkner’s “multitude” of lengthy criminal histories scattered across almost every state and territory. Crown Prosecutor Jacqueline Ball tendered Faulkner’s criminal histories in Queensland, NSW, Victoria, NT, WA and an Australian Federal Police history and said she was “sceptical” of Faulkner’s story
and “no further explanation of reasons why he is unfit to travel”. Ryan said Faulkner had spent 44 years in jail over his lifetime. Court records show he has more than 80 convictions, mostly for fraud, and has adopted more than 50 aliases. He has duped people around the nation by posing as a doctor, an Army officer, a Fedex courier, an American millionaire, an Olympic official, a CIA agent and the guitarist in the 1960’s band The Monkees. He was dubbed the Catch Me If You Can conman because his scams mirrored those of the charming American criminal who was played by Leonardo DiCaprio, in the 2002 film. - NZME
Musical coming to NZ A musical based on the life of Nelson Mandela is heading to New Zealand in 2019. Madiba the Musical will be staged at Auckland’s Bruce Mason Centre from January 24-February 3; Wellington’s Opera House from February 7-10; and Christchurch’s Isaac Theatre Royal from February 14-17. The international production, which began its world tour in France, looks at the life of Mandela and his fight against apartheid in South Africa. Mandela spent 27 years of his life in prison for fighting the racist white ruling in South Africa, and later became the country’s first black president in 1994.

Chilean priest arrested Authorities have arrested a priest on accusations of sexually abusing minors, the latest turn in a scandal engulfing Chile’s Roman Catholic Church for having covered up abuses for decades. Oscar Munoz Toledo, a priest who was once the chancellor of Santiago’s archbishopric, was arrested by police on the orders of prosecutor Emiliano Arias, who is investigating 14 other suspended priests in the southern diocese of Rancagua for allegedly participating in a network of abuse. Munoz is accused of the abuse and statutory rape of seven minors, and Arias did not rule out that there were more victims. - AP

Porn actress Stormy Daniels was arrested at a strip club and is accused of letting patrons touch her in violation of a state law, her attorney said. She was later released and the charges dropped. 10-year-old state law known as the Community Defense Act that says dancers at “sexually oriented” businesses are prohibited from touching customers and vice-versa. Police said two other dancers were arrested along with Daniels. Prosecutors will decide whether to pursue charges against those women. Police said Daniels’ arrest was part of a long-term human trafficking investigation of adult

Trump unloads on May, Brexit Donald Trump has launched an extraordinary attack on Theresa May in a scathing interview with the British press. Speaking with The Sun’s political editor Tom Newton Dunn, Trump slammed the British prime minister over her Brexit plan, negotiation skills and trade stance, even saying her political nemesis Boris Johnson – who resigned earlier this week – would “make a great Prime Minister”. The interview couldn’t come at a worse time for May, who is currently in a vulnerable political position. Her proposal for the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union – which the majority of Brits voted in favour of in 2016 – has been deemed too “soft” by the movement’s more conservative supporters. Three senior government ministers recently quit over the issue. Porn star’s charges dropped Prosecutors have dropped charges against Stormy Daniels just hours after the porn star was arrested and accused of illegally rubbing undercover police officers’ faces against her bare breasts during a performance at an Ohio strip club. Her attorney said she was “set up” in a Columbus police sting operation, calling it an “absurd use of law enforcement resources”. Police said they routinely conduct such undercover operations. The 39-year-old adult film star who claims to have had sex with President Donald Trump was charged with three misdemeanors, each punishable by up to six months in jail and a $US1000 fine. She was released on $US6000 bail around daybreak. By early afternoon, prosecutors said they were dropping the case because Ohio’s law against physical contact between strippers and customers applies only to someone who “regularly” performs at a club. In Daniels’ case, it was her first appearance at Sirens in Columbus. Police said Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, smacked the faces of two female officers and one male officer with her bare breasts. Rare whale killed Icelandic whalers appear to have killed an endangered blue whale before chopping it up to be eaten as a delicacy in Japan. Photos of the massive mammal, which can grow to 33 metres long, were posted online by conservation groups claiming it was slain by Kristján Loftsson’s whaling company, the Daily Mail reports. The huge carcass was seen being hauled in to port by the Hvalur 8 ship while tied to the side of the vessel before being dragged on to the dock. Crew members then took turns posing for photo straddling its back, having needed run-ups to clamber on top of the world’s biggest animal, video from the scene showed. Blue whales were almost hunted to extinction last century and there are only 10,000 to 25,000 left alive. One has not been slaughtered for more than 50 years. Sea Sheperd said it was the 22nd whale killed by Loftsson’s outfit in the past three weeks, the others being endangered fin whales. “Loftsson ordered his crew to butcher the whale just like it was another Fin whale,” the anti-whaling group claimed. - NZME
A blast in an industrial park in a southwestern province has killed 19 people and injured 12 others, China’s official Xinhua News Agency said yesterday. The blast occurred at the Yibin Hengda Technology Co., a chemical plant in an industrial park in the city of Yibin in Sichuan province at 6.30pm on Thursday, Xinhua said. Xinhua cited the Jiang’an county government as saying the fire was put out on Friday morning and the injured were in stable condition. Efforts have been made to improve work safety standards but deadly industrial accidents remain common in China, where enforcement of safety regulations can sometimes be lax. - AP
Mall partly collapses A newly opened shopping mall on Mexico City’s south side partly collapsed yesterday after structural problems led the mall’s operators to quickly evacuate the area, and no injuries were reported. Officials said a support beam failed in a cantilevered office area on the top floors that stuck out from the main mall building. Restaurant worker Juan Ramon Hernandez said people in the mall were evacuated only about five minutes before the offices sheared off. “We heard a big noise and they began to evacuate us from the plaza,” said Hernandez. “About five minutes later was when the collapse happened.” - AP

When Kelsey Ashworth missed out on the Mainland team for the 2018 Beko Netball League, she considered packing netball in for a while. But then the former Ashburton woman got a call that changed everything. “I trialled for the team but was unsuccessful, and I think I played maybe two club games and they contacted me asking if I would come along to a training one night, then they asked Stacey (Peters) and I to be squad members from there on in,” Ashworth said. She’s gone on to become an integral part of the Mainland team, known for her feisty, body-on-theline type style which makes her a formidable opponent in the midcourt.
It is a style Ashburton netball fans are hoping they will see again tomorrow, when Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre hosts the side’s final game of the round robin – a must-win match against South if Mainland are to stand a chance of making the grand final. Ashworth played a key role in Mainland’s first game in Ashburton earlier this season – a win over the side topping the table heading into the defining final round, Waikato/Bay of Plenty. Ashworth is fit. When she isn’t playing netball, she is a multisporter who completed her first Coast to Coast in 2016 and while on her OE in the UK, represented New Zealand at the World Duathlon Championships. “After I missed out (on the Beko squad) I thought I’d maybe have a break from netball and focus on
multisport again, but I decided to play club, and it’s turned out to be pretty full on. It’s funny how things turn out sometimes,” Ashworth said. While she was living in the UK, the 25-year-old found keeping up her multisport training wasn’t easy, so she put it aside for a while, turning her attention back to netball and ended up being a training partner for the Wasps Super League team. The Wasps won the title that season, and the next. Back in New Zealand, it is back to netball for Ashworth, and making the Beko team was one of her goals. Now she’s achieved that, she doesn’t know what will come next. “I’d love to get an ANZ contract at some point, but realistically age-wise that might be a barrier, but I’ll just keep playing for as long as I can, and as hard as I can,”

Ashworth said. Growing up in Ashburton, Ashworth played for Ashburton College at the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Netball Championships, and when she played for the Mid Canterbury Under-17 team she was coached by Andrea Cousins, who today is assistant coach of the Mainland side. The head coach, Ronelle van Dongen, is also a former Ashburton woman, so when the Beko team arrives at Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre on Sunday there will be a real Ashburton flavour to the side. Ashworth has been a key player this season, but how much she’ll feature on Sunday is unknown. “I’ve got quite a lot of game time which has been really good because when I first came into the squad I was almost expecting to be a training partner type role, but
it’s been really good getting out on court and getting some game time,” Ashworth said. She was in the 10 last weekend when Mainland lost to Central in Lincoln, a loss which saw them drop from the top of the table and out of the top two, but Ashworth only got five minutes on court. That loss meant Mainland has to beat South this weekend and rely on other results to go their way if they are to finish in the top two and progress to the final. Ashworth said Mainland’s season came down to this one game, so there was no room for error, and she hoped Ashburton netball fans would get out and support them, as they did last month. Sunday’s game at the EA Networks Centre starts at 1.10pm, and entry is $5 for adults while under-16s are free.

Round four of Mid Canterbury Rugby’s Watters Cup is shaping up to be a doozy. With the form team of the competition in the first three rounds – Southern – having the bye today, it is a chance for the other four teams to step it up and ensure they’ll be there come semi-finals in two weeks. Two big clashes are set to take to the field – Hampstead hosting Methven, and Celtic hosting Rakaia – and both games will have a big impact on the standings no matter which way they panned out. As it stands, the top three are likely to be Southern, Rakaia and Celtic, it is just a matter of which order they finish, with the real fight being for that fourth spot. If Hampstead lose to Methven today they were gone, but if Hampstead do manage to win what would be their first Watters Cup win in nine years, that would set up an intriguing final week where Methven would have to beat Celtic to make the semi-finals. Rakaia co-coach Terry Murray said it was a big week for all sides. “It’s going to be one of those defining weeks for a lot of teams. Like they say in the NRL, it’s moving week,” Murray said. All Rakaia could do was focus on their own game, and their own results, he said. “We don’t need to do anything different. We just need to stick to our systems and have belief in each other and play as we have been playing, and if we are good enough to beat Celtic, so be it. “But I totally believe in our squad’s structure, training and the work we did early on.” Rakaia brought a fitness trainer on board for the first six weeks of the season and it had paid dividends, Murray said. “If we stick to what we know then I think we’ve got a squad that can get through this week,” Murray said. He is confident Rakaia has the goods. They showed glimpses of

what they were capable of against Methven last week. “When we stuck to our structures and played the way we wanted to play we looked good,” Murray said. Celtic head into the game off the bye and have a win over Hampstead and a loss to Southern to their name so far. Facing them will be a Rakaia side which narrowly avoided being the first team to lose a Watters Cup game to Hampstead in nine seasons in round one, and also had to hang on to win against a gallant Methven side last week, showing just how close the competition was. Having the bye in the final
round means today’s game against Methven could be Hampstead’s last chance for a win this season. “Obviously that’s going to be, I imagine, quite a close game because both of us want to get that win and whoever doesn’t get that win is probably going to be winless for the year (in the Watters Cup),” Bovey said. It is Hampstead’s final shot to get that elusive first Watters Cup win in nine years, before it becomes 10 years, so Bovey said Hampstead would set out to empty their tanks – they couldn’t afford to leave any questions unanswered. They knew Methven had been struggling with injuries, but that
didn’t change the way they would approach the game. “They might be struggling with injuries, but geez they have done pretty well so I’m a bit relieved that they do have injuries, because imagine if they didn’t,” Bovey said. “It’s a game that we will prepare for and go into knowing it’s certainly not a game where we will waltz in and say ‘they’ve got injuries, we’ve got this’. It will be a dog fight.” Methven coach Andy Pearce said his side didn’t have a good record against Hampstead and he was expecting a hard, physical battle. “They play a different style to
us and we have to adapt to that,” Pearce said. He said Methven needed to take what wins they could get and keep improving, as they looked to develop their young side for years to come. “I’m impressed with the way these young lads are playing. It’s really good, they are stepping up to the mark and Watters Cup is a different level again, it’s a local derby every week,” Pearce said. In Methven’s two other Watters Cup games so far this season – losses to Southern and Rakaia they’d had just 19 players and had to rely on players backing up from the Bs to fill their bench.
Kaino’s story should inspire Blues Jerome Kaino will tonight play his final professional match in New Zealand when he runs out for the Blues against the Crusaders in Christchurch, a warrior in enemy territory who will almost certainly get the respect he deserves from a notoriously partisan crowd because of who he is and what he has achieved in the game. Will we see his like again? Probably not, and here’s why: The now 35-year-old played 81 tests but admits he was probably an All Black before he deserved to be. Despite not being allowed to play contact sports at his south Auckland primary school (the school banned them for “safety” reasons), he thrived on a scholarship at St Kents after switching from
fullback to loose forward. He was quick and athletic, but rangy with not much meat on his bones. He was known to those close to him as “Aunty” because of his willingness to look after the young children in his immediate family (and do the domestic chores). His work ethic was terrible at the Blues after he joined in 2004 (a year after they won their last title). It all came a bit too easy and he enjoyed the night life a little too much. He was convicted of drink driving after getting behind the wheel following a big night and bumping into the back of a stationary car. Once he turned up to training a little worse for wear and it took Keven Mealamu to put him
back on the straight and narrow. He also received a slap across the chops from none other than the late Jerry Collins for not preparing properly for All Blacks training and forgetting the lineout calls. Kaino loved him for it and still mourns the death of his loose forward brother in a car crash in France just over three years ago. And yet, despite it all, he thrived. Eventually. From talented young kid with an ordinary attitude to an All Black enforcer who starred in two World Cups, it has been a hell of a career for Kaino, who now leaves for French club Toulouse. He made the All Blacks as a “project” in 2004 – Kaino’s first game was against the Barbarians at Twickenham, a man of the match
performance – but wasn’t recalled until two years later when he was a substitute against Ireland in Hamilton and then earned a start a week later at Eden Park (where he had a stinker and drove home down State Highway 1 wondering if he’d play for the All Blacks again). Kaino was dropped by head coach Graham Henry, as he knew he would be, due to a lack of fitness. Instead of settling for a comfortable career at Auckland and the Blues, he trained with the sevens squad, represented the Junior All Blacks, and re-modelled himself into a different beast altogether. He was recalled to the top team in 2008 and was a fixture in it until last year.
There were plenty of opportunities for him to fail, but he refused to, and that says something about the depth of character in a man who arrived in New Zealand from American Samoa as a four-yearold who hardly spoke a word of English. Would players in his position today have the same fortitude? It’s difficult to say, but Kaino’s progress and the fact he became so consistently hard on himself in terms of his performance should be a shining example to the current Blues crop, in particular. He was brilliant in the 2011 World Cup, but later reflected that he had a poor test in the final, won 8-7 by the All Blacks. - NZME

Ashburton’s young multisport extraordinaire Matthew Clough has won his second silver medal at the ITU Multisport World Championships in Denmark. Clough, 17, won silver in the under-19 aquathlon on Thursday, adding to the silver medal he won earlier in the week in the 18-19 year age group in the cross triathlon. He came within just a few seconds of making that second medal a gold though, finishing in 31.25 minutes with the winner crossing the line in 31.18 minutes. An aquathlon is a 1km open water swim followed by a 5km run, and Clough came out of the water second. “The course was covered in jellyfish, mostly everyone getting stung on the swim,” Clough said. “I came out of the water with both arms and my face stung, but it’s the same for everyone and it didn’t slow me down. I had a super fast transition and chased a few guys down reasonably quickly.” It was a hot day, with the temperature reaching about 28°C, which the Kiwis in the field weren’t used to, having made the trek to Europe from the New Zealand winter. “The run was a bit of a battle but I ended up crossing over the line in second place,” Clough said. “I had the fastest run time of the day so that is something that I am super proud of. I am so happy to be bringing home two medals from worlds this year, and being both silver makes me even more hungry to come back next year and chase down some gold.” Clough’s first silver came in the cross tri, in the first year he has

Clough said race conditions for that one were near perfect. The water was about 19 degrees, and the air temperature was 23 degrees. “I had a really good swim start, leading the pack the whole way,” Clough said. He came out of the water first, almost two-and-a-half minutes in front of the rest of the field. “Overall I had the fifth fast-
est swim time of the day, that’s including all of the professional men,” Clough said. The mountain bike was a dry, technical course and Clough had a few near misses but stayed on the bike the whole way. “One other boy in my age group came past me about a third of the way into the ride, and I pushed hard trying to not let him get too far in front,” Clough said. “I think I pushed a bit too hard on the bike because when it came to the run I was in pain city. “I went on to the run course 2 minutes and 40 seconds be-
hind first. The first lap of the run I made up one minute on first place but really struggled through the second 5km lap on the run.” Clough said overall he was happy with the race as he knew that he’d left every single bit of himself out on the course. “To me, that is a personal win.” With Denmark done, Clough will return home and have a short break before turning his attention to Maui, Hawaii, in October, where he will be competing at the World Xterra Championships.

Andy Murray certainly enjoyed his new role at Wimbledon. The two-time champion made his debut as a BBC commentator for the quarterfinal between Rafael Nadal and Juan Martin del Potro, and was left feeling privileged to have witnessed the gruelling five-set battle. Nadal came from a set down to win after 4 hours, 48 minutes and Murray – who had to pull out of this year’s tournament because of a lengthy injury layoff – was impressed. Viewers seemed to enjoy Murray’s expert insight as well. He and fellow commentator Tim Henman – a former Wimbledon semifinalist – joked about which of them the public would view as more boring. - AP
Waratahs’ belief grows Belief is growing but defence is still a work in progress for the surging Super Rugby finals-bound NSW Waratahs. The Tahs enter today’s final round home game with the Brumbies having already secured the Australian conference and seeking a historic home and away clean sweep of that section. Mickelson’s big regret Phil Mickelson wishes he could take back the moment when he swatted a moving golf ball at the US Open. “But there’s not much I can do about it now other than just try to ... act a little better,” Mickelson said this week at the Scottish Open. In his most extensive comments since he purposely violated the Rules of Golf at Shinnecock Hills, Mickelson said whatever backlash he receives from players and the public was his own doing. Mickelson was sliding far out of contention in the third round of the US Open when he chased after a bogey putt on the 13th hole and hit it back toward the hole to keep it rolling off the front of the green. When the Crusaders Knights run onto the field against the Chiefs under-18s today, two Ashburton rugby players will be among them. Josh Ree and Elama Touli were named in the side to play in the game in Hamilton following a Junior Knights Development Camp in Christchurch this week. Both are players in the Crusaders region secondary schools’ UC Championship rugby competition, with Touli a key player in the Mid Canterbury Combined side – made up from players from Ashburton College and Mt Hutt College – while Ree is in his first year playing for St Andrew’s College. Ree played for Mid Canterbury Combined last year and was one of two Ashburton players picked
up by St Andrew’s this season. Liam McCormack was picked up and was also part of the Crusaders Knights development camp. He made a development group which played a Canterbury selection in Christchurch yesterday. Elama and Touli were both initially only picked as part of the wider training group for this week’s camp. A total of 70 players were selected for the camp, which focussed on educating young players on the physical and mental skills required to perform at the top level. During the camp the young players had the opportunity to learn from world class coaching and development staff over the four days, and from there a squad of 26 players was picked to travel to Hamilton to play the Chiefs Under-18s.

Youthful French v experienced Croats A World Cup of surprises concludes with a final of contrasts. Powered by the dynamism of Kylian Mbappe, France have youthful exuberance in a side packed with some of soccer’s highest-value talent. They also have pedigree – winners in 1998 and finalists in 2006. Croatia have a veteran roster that has been stretched to the limit but continues to win in Russia. The Croats never give in, prevailing in a shootout against Denmark, again on penalties against Russia – after being stung by a late equaliser – and then recovering from conceding early against England. Just don’t suggest Croatia will be weary in Sunday’s final when they return to the Luzhniki Stadium. Croatia’s star midfielder Luka Modric said “we will see who will be tired” was the team ethos going into Wednesday’s semifinal, feeling Croatia had been underestimated by the English. Modric, along with Mario Mandzukic, are the 32-year-olds who have propelled Croatia to their first major soccer final. In the previous four World Cups, Croatia failed to qualify in 2010 and was ousted in the group stage the other three occasions. Before then, in their World Cup debut in 1998, Croatia reached the semifinals where they lost to France. When Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic visited the team hotel in Moscow on Wednesday, that 1998 game was on his mind – even before beating England. “We might have the chance for the revenge in the finals with the French,” Plenkovic said. France beat Belgium 1-0 a night earlier. “We have a good opportunity to give them something back for 20 years ago when they reached the final,” Croatia defender Dejan Lovren said. “Maybe it’s our time to revenge something but it’s a tough game and it will be difficult.”
A country of 65 million, France have stars like 19-year-old sensation Mbappe, midfielder Paul Pogba and striker Antoine Griezmann. Croatia are the fourth-smallest country of the 32 World Cup teams with just over four million people. In a coaching journey across Croatia, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, Zlatko Dalic’s belief in his own abilities never dimmed. “I used to say, ‘Give me a Barcelona or a Real Madrid and I will win titles’,” Dalic said. Such jobs no longer seem so far out of reach, especially if Dalic collects the biggest prize in football on Monday morning. Croatia will win the World Cup for the first time if Dalic’s team can get the better of France and coach Didier Deschamps. Receiving trophies is nothing new for Deschamps. As a player, the midfielder won titles at clubs in France, Italy and England, as well as the 1998 World Cup and 2000 European Championship with France. As a coach, he led France to the Euro 2016 final, losing to Portugal. But the 51-year-old Dalic had a largely unremarkable playing career before switching to coaching in his native Croatia. “In my life I have always taken the harder path, had to fight for everything myself,” Dalic said through a translator at Luzhniki Stadium. “I started at the bottom of the ladder.” The climb required a leap into the unknown with a move to the Middle East in 2010. “I did not want to stay in Croa-
tia and be a middling coach and to live off handouts,” Dalic said. “I went abroad whenever it was possible to find a job.” Dalic eventually landed at AlHilal, where he won the Saudi Crown Prince Cup, and then reached the Asian Champions League final with Al-Ain. “We cannot sneeze at that. These are major competitions,” Dalic said. “This brought me huge experience ... and I built a name for myself. This was a hard path but I believed in myself. When Croatia called, I never had any doubts.” The call that ended Dalic’s nomadic seven-year journey came last year, when Croatia had a game remaining to salvage qualification. “He is very dedicated to football,” Croatian federation president Davor Suker said, “and we gave him the chance.” Dalic led Croatia into the World Cup playoffs, where it beat Ukraine over two matches. Now he has taken his country further than ever before in a major soccer competition, eclipsing Suker’s semifinalists in 1998. “The coach has created a special atmosphere,” said Croatia defender Dejan Lovren, who plays for Liverpool. “He knows exactly how to interact with players and does it in a unique way.” - AAP

Warner’s half century David Warner has produced his first half-century since copping a 12-month ban from international cricket, scoring 55 to help extend Winnipeg’s campaign at the Global T20 in Canada. A captain’s knock from Warner, coupled with an unbeaten 65 from fellow Australian Ben McDermott, piloted Winnipeg to a seven-wicket win over Edmonton in the elimination final. Warner smacked four sixes, depositing one loose delivery from South African seamer Wayne Parnell over the temporary fence and into adjoining parklands on the outskirts of Toronto. After a brief search from young fans and officials during the fifth over of the chase the ball was deemed lost. Umpires looked set to replace the ball with a new shiny ball but Warner objected, shaking his finger and head while presumably asking for a customary like-for-like replacement. - AP

They might have the title wrapped up, but Mid Canterbury United’s Mainland Football division two team proved that they weren’t invincible last Saturday. They had to mount a big comeback to down Selwyn United last weekend to maintain their unbeaten record and will be looking for improvement in their next outing at the Ashburton Domain today against the FC Twenty 11 Mavericks. It’s been a funny few weeks for Mid Canterbury United. They headed into last weekend’s Selwyn United game off a default win against Western, which gave them a big enough buffer at the top of the table to ensure they wouldn’t be beaten to the title. With sodden pitches
having led to an unplanned twoweek break last month, they hadn’t had a lot of football. They opted to play into the stiff breeze and the bright sun last Saturday and while it seemed like the smarter option as they opened the scoring from a corner headed into the net by Sam Willis within 10 minutes, they were left thinking otherwise soon after. Selwyn mounted numerous attacking plays, opting to play long down the right wing and it soon paid off when Mid Canterbury goalkeeper Marty Fitzgerald opted to attempt to regather the ball rather than punching it clear, the ball landing at the feet of Selwyn’s striker who chipped the committed keeper to make it 1-1. Selwyn kept the pressure on for the remainder of the half and
scored again from a mistake at centre back giving Fitzgerald no chance, before Fitzgerald made a crucial error, being dispossessed at the corner flag after making ground to get possession. Selwyn easily slotted the ball into the goal and went to the break 3-1 up, and Mid Canterbury United were looking in real trouble for the first time this season. Player/coach Fitzgerald asked his team to be patient with the ball and with the breeze at their backs they opened the second half scoring via a well-finished chance by Jordan Lugg, playing well at left half. Mid Canterbury United then pressed on and scored the equaliser through Nial Young, who put in a man-of-the-match performance at centre half, and they continued to dominate play with
large periods of possession and giving Selwyn few chances to attack. Mid Canterbury United were again rewarded with Luke Martin smashing the ball into the net with 10 minutes to play and it remained that way till the final whistle. Coach Fitzgerald praised his team for an outstanding comeback which ensured they remained undefeated this season. He said his side was home at the Ashburton Domain again today, against FC Twenty 11 Mavericks, and he was hoping people would head along to support them. That game will take place at 2.30pm today, while Mid Canterbury United’s 17th grade side is away today to Nomads United AFC 17A at Nunweek Park.
Warriors’ Johnson searching for space Shaun Johnson is adamant he won’t be left isolated again when his Warriors face Brisbane in the NRL. The Kiwi playmaker had more reason than most for despondency coming off the 36-4 pasting from Penrith which he said created a “hangover” early in the week. The Warriors were left questioning themselves for the first time this season while Johnson considered how he was so eclipsed by Panthers rookie Jarome Luai, who tore a listless defence to shreds. A perennial gripe of Warriors
fans is why the mercurial Johnson can run so hot and cold. With Brisbane likely to employ a rush defence similar to the effective Penrith strategy, Johnson and five-eighth Blake Green have paused for a re-think. “My involvement’s a big one going forward, along with finding out how I can inject myself in a different way when a team wants to try and shut me off like that,” Johnson said. “Where I’m in the team at the moment, I’m floating out the back. Greeny is working the middle, so I’m not seeing as much
ball in those sorts of games.” Coach Stephen Kearney has retained nearly the same side for the clash between two teams that round out the bottom of the top eight. However, they are on different trajectories with Brisbane chasing a fourth straight win after a 34-0 blitz of the Gold Coast last week. Brumbies co-captain Christian Lealiifano will make a decision about his Super Rugby future during the next month. The former Wallabies playmaker is yet to confirm if he will continue with the ACT-based team after playing in the nation’s capital since making his debut in 2008. Lealiifano, 30, has signed to play in Japan for Toyota Jido Shokki once the Brumbies’ season comes to an end, which is likely to be as soon as tonight. If the Brumbies don’t upset NSW or other results don’t go their way, they will miss the finals for the first time since 2012. But Lealiifano did back up coach Dan McKellar’s thoughts about his future at the club. - AP
Modric leads chase Croatia captain Luka Modric leads a group of four major contenders for the World Cup’s Golden Ball; awarded to the best player at the tournament. Lionel Messi won the Golden Ball four years ago despite Argentina being beaten by Germany in the Rio final. The award from the 2010 edition in South Africa went to Diego Forlan from Uruguay, even though his team only finished fourth. The last player from a World Cup winning team to claim the award was Brazil’s Romario in 1994. A player from the title-winning team has won the award at 10 of the past 20 World Cups. Windies in control Kraigg Brathwaite’s second consecutive century put West Indies in control on the first day of the second cricket test against Bangladesh on Thursday. The opener struck 110 runs off 279 balls to lift the West Indies, 1-0 ahead in the series, to 295 for four at the close after Bangladesh won the toss and sent in the home side to bat. Bangladesh had reduced the hosts to 138 for three, but Brathwaite joined forces with Shimron Hetmyer to add 109 for the fourth wicket. Despite Brathwaite becoming Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s third victim, Hetmyer reached stumps 16 runs short of a maiden test century. - AP

One of the locals, who just so happens to be kicking a few goals at the moment, is hoping to break his hometown duck at Ashburton tomorrow but knows if he does it will come as a bit a shock. Young junior driver John Morrison is riding the crest of a wave currently having driven six winners over the last six weeks – but he’s yet to get that elusive win on the track which borders the town where he was born and raised, Ashburton. “It’d be nice to get one there, seeing as it’s home,” Morrison said. “But you can’t push for things too much, that’s usually when they start going wrong so I’m just taking the it will happen when it happens approach.” Morrison has four drives on the Ashburton track at tomorrow’s Ashburton Trotting Club meeting, the last for the racing season, and

while they’re all probably outside chances, a top three placing, or better, is quite possible for each. Two of his chances, Clifden Clowers and Paul’s Verdict will come down to the races in the float with their driver as he is currently holding the role of caretaker trainer for Blenheim based horsewoman, Sandra Mounce. Both raced at Forbury on Thursday night and both finished fifth, exceeding the expectations of Morrison. “I was pretty happy with both of them considering I knew they would need the run. “They’ve both bounced back from the trip down to Dunedin too so hopefully they take another step on Sunday.” Morrison will also drive Eja Patron for Warren Stapleton in the last of the day and warned that the season-campaigner’s latest runs might not be as bad as what the formline would make out. “There hasn’t been a lot in the luck depart-
ment looking back at some of the videos, so hopefully we can get some this week.” Of the four drives though, Morrison is most excited about the prospects of Rosinupthebow early on in the day. The Malcolm Shinn trained pacer is yet to win a race but has shown plenty of potential. “She’s a really nice horse and she’s fresh up which is usually a good thing with anything that Malcolm trains. “She seems to have a lot of high speed too, so hopefully we get a chance to use it.” With his recent run of form, Morrison has elevated himself to fifth on the national junior drivers premiership and while he won’t rundown those in front of him, he can toast to a good season with 17 winners in the bank heading into racing at Addington last night. The most recent of those 17 came on Thursday night at Forbury when he was victorious on Magic Blaze for local trainer Raewyn Low at a double figure price.

Due to this we are looking for an energetic, hands on, team player to support both our Warehouse and Further Processing Departments.
An opportunity exists for a Design Consultant/Sales Consultant to join the Colourplus team. The position involves selling all aspects of decor in-store and consulting with clients in their own home. The position is 40 hours per week including rostered Saturdays until 1pm every 3 weeks.
Core Responsibilities: • Labeling and packing of socks. • Running the automated packaging machines. • Stocktaking and inventory control. • Monthly reports for stock-takes on barcodes and packaging. • Scanning of product and updating associated files and systems to reflect current status. • Updating internal reports relating to these departments.
A qualification and experience would be an advantage, but is not a pre-requisite as full training will be given to the right person. Ideally this position would suit a dynamic friendly, customer driven person, who is keen to learn and develop the necessary skills needed in this exciting industry. Enthusiasm is essential, as is a natural flair for colour and design.
The ideal candidate would have a combination of the following skills and experience: • Prior experience working in a factory environment and warehousing. • Good level of understanding and ability to use MS Office Excel. • Good understanding of internal systems and standard operating procedures. • The ability to multi-task and prioritise effectively to achieve department and company targets
