A wanted person was arrested during an operation that saw Police and the Armed Offenders Squad swarming Racecourse Road on Wednesday evening. Teams descended on the Allenton street at about 7pm, where they successfully located and arrested a man “wanted for family harm incidents in Christch-

urch,” Ashburton Police Senior Sergeant Mark Worner said. Residents reported looking out their windows and seeing dozens of police vehicles, police dogs and about 10 armed officers at the scene during the operation. Worner said the man was returned to Christchurch by police officers, where he appeared in Court yesterday on family harm related charges.

He said the incident was unrelated to an earlier incident which occurred in Hornby, Christchurch, where the armed offenders had also been seen responding to an attempted robbery of an Armourguard cash-in-transit vehicle. Later that night, Police sirens were again echoing around Allenton as a vehicle pursuit took place.

The pursuit began around Chalmers Avenue at 3.23am on Thursday morning, and police said the driver ended up stopping their car on Rakaia Highway and running from their vehicle. “A police dog unit attempted to track him but unfortunately he was not able to be located at the time,” a police spokesperson said.

Ashburton firefighters assisting at ship fire By Katie todd

Three teams of Ashburton firefighters have been helping battle a fierce blaze on board a fishing vessel in Timaru. A fuel fire ignited on the 80m Korean fishing vessel, the Dong Won 701, in its dock at the Port of Timaru at 9.30pm on Monday evening, and teams from across Otago and Canterbury have been working to extinguish the fire since. The first Ashburton team arrived on Tuesday morning, and two more have followed, said Ashburton Volunteer Support Officer Murray Cairns. They are joining forces with career and volunteer Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) teams from Christchurch, Dunedin, Temuka, Waimate, St Andrews, Geraldine, Fairlie and Pleasant Point, who are working rotating shifts. FENZ Canterbury Assistant Area Commander Stephen Butler said “we’re much appreciative of the help from Ashburton”. Altogether, he said teams had been employing a number of different firefighting tactics to try and extinguish the flames. Crews were having to negotiate the ship’s “difficult structure” along with other significant technical considerations. “You can’t just fill it up with water because it will sink, so we have to organise our provisions so that all water taken on board

can be removed,” he said. He said FENZ had been working closely with its owners, experts from Auckland and “all the agencies we can to ensure the safety of crews while working on board – because safety is of course paramount.” Initially, three crew members from the ship had to be treated for smoke inhalation. On Tuesday and Wednesday, crews had been boundary cooling from a tug boat, and yesterday began to enter the ship itself to fight the fire from inside. FENZ area commander Steven Greenyer said teams are doing everything they can to extinguish the fire and ensure public safety. Ashburton FENZ described the experience as a huge learning curve for the town’s firefighters, who “don’t see something like this every day”. The port was closed till 10am Wednesday but all roads that lead directly to the fuel terminal have now been re-opened. A large amount of onlookers have been watching the firefighting efforts, and Salvation Army crews have been providing food and water for firefighters. The Transport Accident Investigation Commission have also opened an inquiry into the fire and its surrounding circumstances, and investigators have been at the scene since Tuesday. Damage to the vessel is expected to be substantial.

The Ashburton Art Gallery have lifted the veil on an expansive exhibition, hoped to generate conversation for years to come. The Water Project, the gallery’s biggest undertaking to date, was declared open at an event held on Wednesday night. Thirteen notable Kiwi artists have spent a year working on diverse sculptures, paintings, pictures and installations interpreting the topic of water – from its spiritual significance to its political divisiveness, historical impacts and scientific disparities. Ashburton Art Gallery president Derek Binnie said water will become the most important issue facing mankind. Water often goes undiscussed despite the fact “it’s all around us

… it’s part of the fabric of society,” he said. The works were given a Maori blessing by Te Wera King of Arowhenua and several artists spoke on their experiences creating the event, including through stories and poetry. Eleven of the artists undertook a seminar and four-day exploratory road trip in Canterbury last March, drawing artistic inspiration from site visits and consultations with NIWA scientists, conservationists and iwi representatives, several of whom were at the opening on Wednesday night. The artists acknowledged the Art Gallery curator Shirin Khosraviani for “living and breathing water” during the past year in order to get the project off the ground. Ashburton Art Gallery exhibi-

tions assistant Nicole Bourke said it had been a full-on final week of installations leading up to the opening, and the gallery team were looking forward to being able to enjoy the completed exhibition. “I think it will be a crowd-pleaser,” she said. Yesterday, the 13 artists delivered a public floor talk at the gallery, and locals turned up to hear the story behind the artworks. The Water Project, spread over all three exhibition spaces at the Art Gallery, will be open until June 22, and school holiday activities tackling “the wonder of water” will be held from this weekend. The gallery hopes The Water Project will tour to other parts of the country thereafter, and invite water-related conversation from other regions.

‘People person’ principal officially farewelled By Katie todd

Allenton Principal Graham Smith was showered with cards, gifts, books and gratitude as he bid farewell to his school yesterday afternoon. A leaving assembly was held for their principal of five years, who is departing to travel overseas with his wife and swap full time principal work for parttime relief teaching. Smith’s career has spanned 12 schools in total, including 28 years in the Mid Canterbury district as principal of Hinds School, Methven Primary School then Allenton School. Staff yesterday acknowledged his “incredible” contribution to Allenton School. Junior syndicate leader Fiona Maw said Smith had shown “genuine care for the children”, and senior area leader Kerrin Corcoran said staff were better off for his support and encouragement. Middle syndicate leader Janine Barker said he had always

put people at the forefront of his decision making. “He’s made positive changes for all the right reasons, while maintaining good common sense,” she said. Board of Trustees chairperson Andrew Leete said he was a “really caring man,” and praised the amount of hard work he did behind the scenes. Smith was also lauded in speeches from student school leaders Jasmin and Libby, who shared stories of his encouragement and “what we think of, when we think of Mr Smith”. Smith’s replacement, Bruce Tilby, will step in at the start of Term 2. Tilby has previously worked as principal in a number of schools in Auckland and Orewa. Rate rise pruned to 5 per cent By Sue NewmaN

In what became a great example of juggling Ashburton District councillors have achieved the impossible, almost halving the district’s rate increase for the coming year. In its draft long term plan, the council had signalled rates would be likely to rise by 9.7 per cent next year but when they signed off their draft long term plan yesterday, that average rate rise sat at just 5 per cent. And over the next 10 years, the news is good for ratepayers with

rate increases predicted to be modest with the highest, 6.1 per cent likely in 2019/2020 and the lowest in 2021/2022, 0.9 per cent. As dollars have been carved from next year’s budgets, several projects were pushed further down the to-do list as district councillors took a critical look at every budget item. Achieving a lower than anticipated rate came with a number of victims – Lake Hood residents, as their rating zone changed from rural to urban, a push back on a raft of projects planned for Ashburton’s resource recovery park

deferring development of new sports fields around the EA Networks Centre with a commitment to secure 50 per cent of the funding required from user groups, loan funding the shortfall on capital works programmes in roading rather than rate funding and the strategic use of forestry revenue and reserves to off-set rates. As the council’s newly appointed finance committee chairman, Russell Ellis’ first job in the role was to move that the long term plan should be adopted and put out for community consultation. “A lot of work has gone into this

and now we’re asking ratepayers of this district to spend some time going through it and giving us their views,” he said. The Our Place Our Plan document provided people with a great opportunity to become involved in what happened in their district in the future and to understand how and where the money they paid in rates was spent, Ellis said. “Sometimes I get very frustrated by the lack of response when we ask them to do so, but this is a chance to see us face-to-face and talk about what we’re doing over

the next 10 years to move this district forward.” The council will spend $35.4 million of rates money in the coming year. This represents 51 per cent of its income. Changes to the way the council rates for water has meant property owners in many parts of the district are now facing a decrease in rates next year, some more than 15 per cent down – Mayfield, a 21.6 per cent decrease and Mt Somers 18.4 per cent. Rates will rise, however, in Ashburton, up 8.7 per cent. The draft long term plan is now out for public consultation.

Dairy group hopes to bag top title By Sue NewmaN

Ten years ago there were a small number of Filipinos working on dairy farms around the Ashburton District. They were the pioneers who saw opportunities for work and a new life in a new country and they had the courage to leave behind family, friends and their culture. For those early arrivals life in a new country also came with a sense of isolation and a need to build new support networks. And one of those new, New Zealanders, Earl Magtibay did just that. He contacted other Filipinos working on farms in the district and established an informal group that met for support and friendship. News of the support group spread and what started as a handful of Rakaia dairy farm workers has grown to a 300 plus strong member group and growing. Add family members to that number and it runs well over 1000. The story of the Filipino Dairy Workers’ support group might be an Ashburton story, but on Saturday it will be a story that is told to the rest of the country. As winners of the Ashburton regional Trustpower Community Awards, the group will be presenting their story in the national finals in Queenstown, hoping to win the supreme title. The event celebrates the work of voluntary groups and organi-

With just a two days to go until he’s on stage, Magtibay admits he’s a little nervous about presenting the dairy workers’ story. “I just want to get our story across because we believe it is something special. We want to

make our district proud,” he said. The hardest part in preparing for the finals presentation has been condensing a story that spans 10 years into just eight minutes, Magtibay said. Final touch ups are now being made to what will be a video and power point presentation. “We only have one chance to

tell this story and we want to make sure it is good.” As well as providing social support, the group arranges courses in food safety, workflow systems, first aid and driving, through funding from lottery grants. They conduct free seminars on employment rights, immigration, and progress in the dairy indus-

try to keep their members upto-date. One of its achievements has been successfully petitioning to have mobile consular services in Ashburton, saving workers time and money travelling to renew their passports. Because of their actions, this service is now offered nationwide. The organisation has become a respected source of knowledge for migrant worker issues and is participating in a PhD project through Lincoln University on the integration of migrant dairy workers in New Zealand, Travelling to Queenstown with Magtibay as part of the presentation group will be mayor Donna Favel, councillor Thelma Bell and group director Urduja Pasion. The supreme winner receives a custom-made trophy, $4000 in prize money, a $1000 voucher from one of New Zealand’s leading training providers for the community sector, Exult. The Runner-up will receive $2500 in prize money, a $500 Exult voucher and a framed certificate. The Whetu Mataiata Award, which is an award to recognise a group that is already putting in the hard yards, but has potential to thrive even more with a little extra support, receives a framed certificate and a consultancy service package from award sponsor, Exult. The awards gain exposure in national media, so there is significant opportunity for the winning group to boost their profile.

Mt Hutt staff battle snow drifts to get back to work By SuSaN SaNdyS

Mt Hutt management estimate the ski area received up to 50 centimetres of snow in a snowstorm this week. The wintry blast which caused havoc throughout New Zealand closed Methven schools on Tuesday, with more than six centimetres of snow falling in the

town. The bitterly cold conditions continued to hang around on Wednesday, with Methven’s temperatures remaining in single digits, and thunder and sleet reported from nearby areas in the morning. On Wednesday afternoon Mt Hutt staff made their way via groomer through deep snow drifts back to Mt Hutt after the

autumn storm. Manager James McKenzie said drifts on the access road were up to two metres high, and snow on the skifield itself would most likely be wind affected. As of next week about 20 staff daily will be making their way up to the skifield as they aim to finish off summer maintenance as well as the $1.5 million of im-

provements under way. A welding team of four begins at the weekend, working on installing pumps and pipe for a new snowmaking system. They will join other staff, including a team of builders from Bradfords who have been doing modifications in the base lodge. “It’s busy times, it always is in autumn, and everything is start-

ing to arrive,” McKenzie said. McKenzie expected the majority of snow from this week’s storm to have melted by the time winter came round, but was looking forward to further snowstorms leading up to the opening date of June 8. It was not unusual to get snow on the mountain this time of year.

Arachnophobes beware, a warming climate is bringing more creepy crawlies to Mid Canterbury. After the hottest summer on record, Spiderban Limited owner Mike Ward says he has been busier than ever. Whitetail spiders and house flies have had a boom season, and now with the weather beginning to cool down for winter, the work just keeps coming as cluster flies and rodents start to move indoors. Ward and his team of pest controllers cover from Mid Canterbury to as far south as Invercargill. Ward said he had had many a call over the summer and autumn from people wanting their homes treated for spiders, and some had phoned following being bitten by a whitetail. The whitetail bites in particular could be quite nasty and even lead to a festering wound which left a scar, and one of his customers had suffered an anaphylactic reaction and been forced to use her epipen. “It’s been good conditions for them, because they are predominantly aggressive towards other spiders they tend to be the main one that people see,” Ward said. Ward does not only exterminate spiders,

but has a fascination for them as well, and keeps a few whitetails on hand in clear containers. He has created a video of two whitetail spiders mating and put it on YouTube where it has received almost 1000 views. He looks after the whitetails like pets, in that he feeds them what they like, and that is other live spiders. He takes them to shows and finds people love learning all about them. Come winter he will euthanase the spiders by putting them in the freezer, and then source new stock for summer. Ward said it had not only been a change in the climate towards hotter summers which encouraged spiders, but they had also thrived in last summer’s humidity. He said spiders were still active this time of year and could even begin to come into the house more after being transported on firewood. In addition, house flies would remain active until the end of May, and cluster fly populations had grown in Mid Canterbury with an increase in irrigation. Cluster flies laid their eggs in worm holes in the ground, and the larvae ate the worms before emerging, and then hibernated indoors over winter. They particularly thrived in foothills areas such as Mt Somers and Staveley.

DOC Mahaanui Operations Manager Andy Thompson said people who fished had a responsibility to ensure they knew where marine reserves were and their boundaries. “The Pohatu Marine Reserve was established in 1999 and is one of several marine protection areas around Banks Peninsula, which also includes the Akaroa Marine Reserve, Akaroa Taiapure, and Banks Peninsular Marine Mammals Sanctuary.” “These cases are a reminder that people who fish in marine reserves can expect to be prosecuted.” The location and boundaries of the marine reserves are clearly marked on the DOC website, as well as on all updated marine charts and signs at all boat ramps in Akaroa Harbour. Fishing in a marine reserve has a maximum penalty of $10,000 or three months’ imprisonment, or both. Equipment used in the offending can be forfeited. Fishing or taking, in relation to any marine life, includes any attempt at taking.

Anglers need to check the location of marine reserves before they go fishing, says DOC. The Department of Conservation has laid charges for six incidents of alleged illegal fishing in Pohatu Marine Reserve and Akaroa Marine Reserve on Banks Peninsula. Last week four Canterbury men were prosecuted and fined in the Christchurch District Court for illegally fishing in one of these reserves. Grant Richard Burgess, James Cunningham, Sean Cunningham and Mark Donald Macalister Nelson all pleaded guilty in court on April 4 to charges of taking marine life from Pohatu Marine Reserve, on the southeast side of Banks Peninsula. DOC rangers on a routine boat patrol of the marine reserve saw the offenders fishing from two separate boats on January 4. The men told the rangers they weren’t aware of the marine reserve. Judge Gary MacAskill said there was no reasonable excuse for their actions and they ought to have made sure what protected areas there were in the locality. An order was made for forfeiture of the fish that were

Funerals don’t always make an easy conversation topic – especially if you’re trying to talk about your own. But that’s exactly what Paterson’s Funeral Services are calling on locals to do this week. They’re marking Take the Time to Talk awareness week, and encouraging families and friends to speak about their final wishes and consider options like preplanning and pre-paying for their funerals. Take the Time to Talk awareness week is held across New Zealand and organised by the Funeral Directors’ Association of New Zealand (FDANZ) to which Paterson’s belong. This year’s focus is “goodbye is as important as hello,” and FDANZ are reminding people that putting focus on our goodbyes can help “allow our loved ones the best opportunity to grieve well”. Paterson’s Funeral Services manager Barry Hayman said 20 years ago there weren’t a lot of people who talked about what they wanted. “Nowadays it’s still hard, particularly for men,” he said. However, a throng of Ashburtonians turned up at Paterson’s on Tuesday afternoon to engage in discussion, and it’s hoped more will follow. “The idea of recording your own funeral requests may seem a little unusual to some. But when you think about it, it’s really just an extraordinary way of showing your family how much you care,” the FDANZ said. A concert that united a Kiwi blues superstar and an Ashburton-acclaimed choir has been hailed a “huge success”. Paul Ubana Jones (right) and the Mid Canterbury Choir (MCC) brought Ride that Train to the stage at Ashburton Trust Event Centre last Friday after weeks of planning and rehearsals. Despite living just up the road in Southbridge it was Ubana Jones’ first Ashburton concert –

the 72nd for the Mid Canterbury Choir. Around 250 people turned out to watch the show and hear different styles of music from both performers’ repertoires. Mid Canterbury Choir manager Carol Gunn said Ubana Jones enthralled the crowd with the magic of his music and his stories about each song – often very funny. Ubana Jones has four decades of professional performance, nine albums and a number of international awards under his

belt, and has worked alongside names like BB King, Bob Dylan, Norah Jones, Crowded House and Taj Mahal. “Paul enjoyed working with the choir and heaped praise on them for their songs in the concert,” she said. “His guitar playing was exceptional – from soulful through to so animated it was a wonder the guitar strings held out,” she said. Ubana Jones is now working on his 10th album which he hopes to produce as an LP.

Horror in paradise Fourteen people were murdered in just 36 hours in the Mexican city of Cancun last week. All are considered to have been cartel-related but they were dangerously close to popular tourist hotspots. On April 4 alone, nine people were killed and one person was shot. Five of them were killed in a home where neighbours said the occupants were drug dealers. Another three were killed standing outside a tamale stand next to a clothing store, the Daily Mail reports. On Thursday April 5, another five were murdered in separate incidents in the city. The spate of violence is the worst in the city since 2004 and occurred as thousands of tourists partied in the town’s notorious hotels, bars and clubs for Spring Break. According to the office of Civil Protection, 112,000 people flocked to Cancun for the holiday. On April 11, in a separate incident, a woman’s body was found in the street with a “message” left on it. She had been shot several times in the face. Since the start of the year, more than 100 people have been shot in the party town. The closest murders last week were around eight miles from the hotel zone which tourists flock to. Earlier this year, locals told

‘I don’t take normal graduation photos’ A gun-loving college senior’s graduation photo has gone viral in the US after February’s Parkland school shooting. Brenna Spencer, who is graduating from the University of Tennessee with a communications degree, posted the photo on Twitter on April 8. She is pictured wearing a pink “Women for Trump” T-shirt which she is lifting up, exposing a handgun tucked into her jeans. It was accompanied by the caption: “I don’t take normal college graduation photos ...” Spencer appeared on Fox & Friends yesterday, and defended her provocative post. She said she wanted her graduation photo to reflect her passion for the Second Amendment – the right to bear arms. “The Second Amendment has been under attack – especially on college campuses,” Spencer said on the programme. “So I think it’s really important to empower people to show that you should be allowed to protect yourself. Your rights don’t stop at a college campus.” Despite attracting serious criticism on social media, Spencer stood by her post. “It’s really, really important to empower the tens of millions of ... gun-owning women and let them know that they have a voice,” she said. “It’s really, really important to stand up for what you believe in.” The post has already attracted almost 90,000 “likes” and more than 12,000 comments. - AP

show issues that the council has been notified about – but it is a very good place to start. The property file at the council may also contain a lot of relevant information that isn’t on the LIM, such as a site plan and the original plans of the house. It may also show whether uphill properties drain onto the one you’re interested in. Some property information is free from some councils online or if you visit the council offices in person.

Want a room with a view? Like the idea of looking down on your neighbours? New Zealand’s varied topography means there’s plenty of opportunities for hillside living, but if you’ve never lived on a hill before you may be unaware of some of the issues involved. Just as with any property purchase, you need to do as much research as you can before making an offer. You can do some of this homework easily by yourself. Take, for example, the property’s position. What’s the access like? If the property is set away from the road, think about how you’ll feel walking up (or down) to and from the house in wet and windy weather. Factor in that you may often be carrying luggage, small children or bags of groceries – still keen? If the property is tucked into a hillside, think carefully about its position relative to the sun and the prevailing winds. If it’s standing proudly on the side or top of a hill, consider the impact of high winds while you gaze at the views. Think too, about how future trimming or clearing away any vegetation to maximise views and sun could impact on land stability. When you’re inside, look around the property to see if you can find anything that could signpost land movement, such

as doors or windows no longer closing easily or uneven floors. The old marble trick – drop a marble on the floor and see where it rolls – will indicate uneven foundations caused by instability. Outside, keep an eye out for any steps that may be pulling away from the building, or diagonal cracks in plaster, brickwork, solid walls or foundations. If you’re used to living on the flat, you may be unfamiliar with things like retaining walls. These are often found on hillside properties and it’s absolutely crucial to check them out as they can be expensive to fix. When you’re viewing a property, keep an eye out for any retaining walls or fences that are tilting at unusual angles. Can you see any small slips, subsidence, bulges or cracks? It’s worth checking out any large retaining walls belonging to adjacent neighbouring properties as well.

The Earthquake Commission’s website (www.eqc.govt.nz) has detailed information on what to look out for. One of the key documents that can help you find out more is the Land Information Memorandum (LIM), which is a summary of all the information held by the different departments at the local council on the day the LIM was produced. A LIM will provide information on issues with the land (such as whether it is prone to slippage or erosion), stormwater and sewage drainage. It should show all the permissions, building consents or resource consents that relate to the original property and any changes since it was built. It should also tell you if it is in a high wind area or in a flight path. A LIM is not the be-all and end-all of information about a property – it can only

Once you’ve got the LIM, it’s a good idea to ask your lawyer or conveyancer to help you understand the report. If you have any concerns about the property following reading through a LIM, it may be a good idea to seek further professional advice from a surveyor or engineer. There’s no guarantee that any property will be trouble-free, but you’ll sleep much easier knowing that you went into any transaction armed with as much information as possible. New M5 best of both worlds

ver since the launch of the first BMW M5 in 1984, the ultimate 5-series has always been resolutely rear-wheel-drive, but as the super-saloon power war hikes on past the 600bhp point, the new, sixth-generation 2018 BMW M5 has gone all-wheel-drive. The new F90 M5 is still very much rearbiased, but in theory should be less scary in the rain or on frosty winter mornings. And the 2018 M5 even has the option to switch to a fully rear-drive mode. The best of both worlds perhaps. Based on the latest F90 generation 5-series, the new 2018 M5 is lighter than the car it replaces, thanks to plenty of aluminium in its construction, and some composite components. At 1855kg the new M5 still a pretty weighty beast, though, albeit a smidge lighter than the AMG E63. The roof is made of carbonfibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP), with the dual benefit of lowering the centre of gravity and increasing torsional rigidity, along with the less prosaic bonus of looking kinda racy when specced in a lacquered bare weave finish. Despite all that fresh air in its face, the new BMW M5 is really quite a subtle, understated car. You’ll probably find yourself in one of two camps – a fan of its under-the-radar, sleeper disguise, or wishing it was a bit more wild-looking. It’s a lot of car, both in terms of dimen-

sions and performance. The all-wheel drive helps the new M5 crack 0-62mph in 3.4 seconds, and 0-124mph in 11.1 seconds, making it the fastest-accelerating iteration yet. Whip the 155mph top speed limiter off as part of the optional M Driver’s package and it can hit 190mph. The new 2018 M5 has a development of the previous car’s twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8,

using the most powerful version used in the 30 Jahre edition as its starting point. Max power is 592bhp (or a nice round 600 metric horsepower), and maximum torque is a frankly brutal 553lb ft from 1800rpm. Branded ‘xDrive,’ BMW’s name for its AWD systems across the board, the M5’s set-up is made possible by a single ECU that controls both differentials along with

the stability control, ABS and various other vehicle dynamics systems. The central computer is extremely quick at processing information – this type of system wouldn’t have been possible a few years ago. Carbon ceramic brakes are also an option. There’s probably little to be gained on the road, but on the track they work well.

New-style Yankee muscle T hey say “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” Well. So this is the 2019 Chevrolet Camaro; a refresh of the current model and a continuation of the Alpha platform that debuted in 2015. Chevrolet label it “bold” in their press release, and they’re certainly not wrong. The Camaro’s styling has come under scrutiny all day, as it’s clearly a hefty departure from the previous model, as well as the Aussie-designed fifth-gen model before that. It adopts a corporate face that Chevrolet are clearly marching forward with. You can also see it slapped on the all-new Silverado and Suburban – an integrated grill and headlight fascia that takes up plenty of vertical and horizontal real estate, while sweeping from one side of the car to the other. The announcement showcases the visual differences between the ‘lower tier’ models and those that come with higher pricing. Entry-level cars get two distinctly separate grill areas, the bottom of which curls around to form vents in front of the front wheels. Big daddy models connect the two areas into one huge gaping mouth, helping optimise air flow among other things. If you’re looking at these models wondering why those with the dual grill look familiar, it’s because we got a sneak peek of the look in the most recent Transformers action flicks. Little did we know that a next-generation Camaro was hiding in plain sight. The dominating discussions on looks are a bit of a shame, given that they overshadow what’s possibly one of the world’s greatest performance bargains; the new Turbo 1LE [pictured above]. That naming convention won’t be anything new to bow-tie fans, but what is new is pairing it with the turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. It comes with 205kW, 400Nm of torque, and no automatic option. Yup, it’s manual only, and that’s a huge sign of confidence in product given America’s lack of interest in manual cars. With less weight, a stick, FE2 suspension coupled with revised dampers, stabilizers for

lateral stiffness, and a beefier Brembo brake package, the Turbo 1LE could be the track weapon of choice. New Zealand won’t be getting it, though. Not for now anyway, though given how few four-cylinder Mustangs sell in New Zealand compared to V8s. What we will get is the 2SS, which sports the more aggressive new face out of the pair revealed today. American specs showcase an output of 332kW and 617Nm (compared to the new Mustang GT’s 339kW and 556Nm). Now we wait on pricing. If leaks over the ditch are anything to go by, expect our high-spec 2SS to be priced close to the $100,000 mark. And with HSV SportsCat and Silverado pricing now out of the bag, it’s just a matter of time before the Camaro follows suit.

Maserati keeps it sharp

aserati has updated and improved its best-selling Ghibli luxury sports saloon, the model that has helped expand the Italian marque’s share of the premiere sports car market throughout the world. There are now two new versions of the Ghibli available, with a host of new technology features and a power boost for the top-of-the range Ghibli GrandSport model. The Ghibli shares its core architecture – chassis, suspension layout, V6 engines and eight-speed ZF automatic transmission – with Maserati’s flagship, the Quattroporte, but is 293mm shorter and 50kg lighter. Driven spent more than 400km behind the wheel driving the GrandSport model across some of Australia’s tightest, twistiest mountain roads in the Snowy Mountains, and can confirm the new model retains the sharp road manners Maserati is renowned for. The 3-litre V6 engine delivers 320kW of power in the S model, and we were powering up and down the steep, windy roads, with the paddle-shifters processing the gear changes fast enough to deliver a thrilling and agile drive. There is enough pop and crackle from the exhaust on the downshift to satisfy the enthusiast, without scaring the neighbours. The exterior changes are subtle, with adjustments to the bumpers and other styling refinements, but then the current

Refined versatility

t was pouring when we left Ashburton for Queenstown and then became progressively worse with light snow on the climb through the Lindis. Ideal driving conditions though to appreciate the grip and excellent roadholding of this sporty, all-wheel-drive version of Hyundai’s eye-catching, compact SUV, Kona models. Of which there’s currently four - two front-wheel-drive models in either entry level ($31,990) or higher specified ($36,990) Elite form. Both with 2.0-litre, 110kW/180Nm petrol engines and six speed autos. Then there’s two 1.6-litre turbo 130 kW/265Nm all-wheel-drive models. They have dual-clutch, seven speed autos, a sportier rear suspension and cost either $36,990 or $41,990 for the Elite. While they look the same, they quiet different to drive. In our household a 2.0litre would likely be the choice of she who must be obeyed, while mine would be either of the edgier 1.6 turbo’s. I’ll come back to why a little later. But no matter which is chosen you’ll be driving a distinctive but attractive looking SUV with a nicely sculpted front, shapely scalloped sides complete with contrasting, strategically placed dark grey ‘body armour’ and a neatly shaped rear. Size wise, they are a little shorter, but wider than both the Mazda CX-3 and Toyota C-HR. So those amongst our travelling group were surprised about how much rear passenger space there is. The rear seats to sit quite low meaning easier access and decent headroom. Although three standard sized blokes were fitted therein, without complaint for a 20km drive, for

any longer distances two would be best. Given those distinctive outside looks, the Kona cabins are much more mainstream. But nicely laid out with very practical style and function. There’s a large central tablet-style multimedia display for the Apple Carplay, Android Auto and an Auto Link system which give both connectivity and quick access to information, entertainment and comfort options. A smartphone is required for navigation as there’s no dedicated system. Elite models have full leather interiors, heated front seats, wireless smartphone charging, a heads-up display, LED headlights and 18” alloy wheels instead of 17inch. My drive-time with the 2.0litre Elite was shorter than planned, but found it delivers pretty much what you expect in a smooth, predictable manner and is very well setup for comfortable, everyday driving. Also some drivers will be more at ease with the more sedate, sometimes smoother reactions of its engine and conventional 6-speed auto than those delivered by the 1.6T. Whose very willing direct injection turbo delivers 265 Nm (on hand right from 1500 rpm to 4500rpm) and the urgent manner in which the smart, quick changing, seven-speed dual clutch auto makes the most of this. Meaning agreeably quick out of town motoring as well as both effortless overtaking and mountain pass ascents. Where through the likes of the tight winding corners of the Lindis it excelled with precise, predictable handling and cornering - thanks to its well sorted dynamic combination of steering, a rigid chassis, dual arm multi-link rear suspen-

sion and its all-wheel-drive system. In fact it drove so well it was easy to forget that one was driving a SUV, albeit one that sits quite low. Indeed the ground clearance is 170mm, something that needs to be kept in mind with deeper ruts when driving on rougher shingle roads. Where otherwise the loose surfaces and corrugations were very well dealt with. The front seats were long distance excellent, both comfort and support wise. Plus there’s very good views all-round from the drivers seat. It’s quiet to, although the 235/45 tyres made the presence of some lengths of very coarse chip known. The claimed overall fuel economy figures are 7.2L/100km for the 2litre, and even with its extra grunt, a lesser 6.7L/100 km for the 1.6T. And despite being very new when I collected it, the trip computer on the test car showed an impressive 7.0L/100km for my return trip from Wanaka. All Kona have an array of “SmartSense” active safety technologies which includes the radar-based lane assist, forward collision warning and blind spot warning. No adaptive cruise control though. The boot, back seats up, holds 361litres of luggage and there’s the usual fire extinguisher and first aid kit therein.

Stand up, tell council what you think A

s a district most of us are pretty keen to have our say, providing we don’t have to stand up and be counted. We have opinions we love to share, providing we can share them with like-minded people and we’re often quicker to criticise and condemn than we are to praise or hand out a well earned bouquet. And that’s never more true than when it comes to saying what we think about what’s right and what’s wrong about life in the Ashburton District. It’s easy to grumble to friends about the way the council is doing its job, to criticise spending as a waste of rates money and to suggest those at the top don’t really know what they’re doing. But don’t ask most of us to put our names, faces and opinions

out there for the rest of the district to see. And that’s a shame. Council staff have, over the past eight or so months, been working on a planning exercise that takes place every three years. It’s called a review of the district’s long term plan, the document that spells out how the council will spend its money over the coming 10 years. New projects and core council work, they must all be slotted in to this plan and paid for out of a

pool of funds that has very definite limits. Staff do the hard yards, preparing the first cut budget and then councillors take over looking at what the wish list costs and deciding what can be done, what can be deferred and what should be canned. It’s a gruelling job for council staff and a challenging one for councillors. And it can’t be guess work. If it’s not in the plan it won’t be done – unless the circumstances are exceptional and then the cash has to be found from somewhere. This time round the council team has come up with a plan that’s as good as you can get without hiking rates up by a ridiculous amount. In fact, by judicious juggling, they’ve produced a plan where

the rates increase is almost half that flagged in the current long term plan. Well done to them. And now it’s our turn. The plan doesn’t end when it’s adopted by the council. That’s only the beginning of its journey where we become the lead players. Our Place Our Plan is now out in the public forum. It’s ours to mull over, to condemn, to criticise or to praise. We have a great opportunity here. If we like it, that’s fine, but if we don’t then don’t moan to the neighbour, tell our councillors. They want to hear. This process is called public consultation. It’s our process to own. We need to get off our complacent butts and take part, to read the plan – in its summarised form of course.

And then we need to do something else. We need to make a submission if we feel strongly about any issues and we need to make the effort to turn up at any of the half dozen meetings that will be held around the district from next week. Those meetings are an opportunity to talk eyeball to eyeball with district councillors, to ask them why decisions were made and to let them know if you don’t agree. They are a forum where questions can be asked and where answers should be given. Don’t be shy, don’t be apathetic, don’t be the person who grizzles behind the scenes but who won’t stand up and be counted. This round of consultation is YOUR opportunity, grab it with both hands.

Is it time to ‘zhoosh’ up the Games? T

he Commonwealth Games. I’m just not that into it! I in no way intend to belittle any of the athletes, coaches, officials or venues, but it just isn’t grabbing me the way the Olympics do. A lot has been said about the coverage and I’m sure that is a contributing factor. TVNZ has obviously seen the games as a money-maker and are jamming as many commercials in a night’s viewing as possible. I’m guessing those advertisers will be paying top dollar for them as well. I know a lot of people were stoked TVNZ had won the rights and were looking forward to seeing the Games for free, but it is coming at a cost, a bad-taste-inyour-mouth cost. Mind you, as much as I think TVNZ has shot themselves in the foot with the ad-athon each evening, is it any worse than paying a subscription to Sky TV and then having to watch ads? Yeah sure it’s nowhere near as many, but having to pay to watch ads just doesn’t sit right for me. No wonder Netflix and other streaming options are becoming so popular. Just a warning from personal experience, if you do get Netflix be prepared for some sleep deprivation when you start bingewatching some TV shows. I think

I averaged about four hours a night when we discovered Homeland. So what would drag people like me back to watching the Games? I think I have a solution! I can’t help looking at some of the athletes with their 12-pack abs and biceps larger than the average thigh muscle and think to myself, it’s amazing what hard work and multi vitamins can do eh? I’m sure they are doing their best to drug test the athletes, I just hope they are as vigilant when it comes to masking agent testing as well. I think we could be nearing a time when we say, go for it, whack as many pills down your throat as you want. I’d watch the 100 metres, run in six seconds, the four-metre high jump and 57-metre shot put. We may have to rethink the javelin, discus and hammer for spectator safety though. You could get the decathlon done and dusted in half a day

I learned from reading certain councillors’ 18-month assessments, published in last Saturday’s Guardian, that along with a number of citizens (electors) I am capable of making negative statements about what I consider the core responsibilities of any New Zealand council. One councillor also used the words unthankful and ungrateful when referring to a section of the borough’s constituents. Perhaps, I am all of these, but I have observed and experienced less-than-satisfactory aspects of urban and rural infrastructure, particularly, roading and stormwater removal which are causing residents concern. In addition, the removal of a

instead of two. Also, it’s going to save the organisers a hell of a lot of money in drug testing, both at the Games and year round with the random tests. Then you get the drug companies on board with sponsorship. Maybe then the Games could actually make some money instead of losing heaps. Imagine it, “The 2018 Commonwealth Games brought to you by No Doze, keeping you awake and watching all 12 days”. Individual events could be sponsored. The beach volleyball could be sponsored by a sunscreen company – “Blocking sun at the net”. The weightlifting brought to you by Panadol, if you’ve had too long at the bar. The trap shooting thanks to IVF – “Make sure your shots hit the mark”. The fullbore shooting could be sponsored by Durex – “Keeping your live rounds contained”. “The pole vault, brought to you by Viagra, getting you up and your leg over.” Too soon? Killing the golden goose The National Party’s spokesman for energy and resources, Jonathan Young, has called the Government’s decision to ban gas and oil petroleum exploration economic vandalism, saying it was a case of “killing the golden goose”. Young said yesterday he was “very disappointed” the Government had not consulted the industry before making the announcement. “It’s also a policy they never forecast prior to the election. I think they’re just throwing the industry under the bus.” The move by the Government comes off the back of a Westpac report, which said that New Zealand could save as much as $30 billion in the long-term by immediate and gradual action on climate change. However, Young has warned the Government’s move is likely to have an immediate impact on Taranaki where 4500 people rely on the oil and gas industry for work.

“They are now potentially at risk of losing a well-paid job,” he said. “They have issues around their families, their mortgages. “You have a region that has only 110,000 people, so you’re looking at a good percentage of that population being affected.” Earlier this month, the Government announced via Regional Economic Development Minister Shane Jones, a $100,000 fund to be invested towards research on how to transition Taranaki as a clean energy centre. “That’s the equivalent to probably one year’s income in the oil and gas sector,” said Young. “It’s nowhere near enough, and if they are true to their word for a just transition for regions like Taranaki, then that’s just the tip of the iceberg and they had better step up and make some significant investment to help the thousands of people in this industry transition.” The Government also announced an additional $20 mil-

Volatility the only constant T

he roller-coaster ride for investors has continued this week as volatility remains the only constant in the investing landscape. Trade has again dominated headlines for markets, while rising political tensions in the Middle East have certainly garnered plenty of attention. With the global reporting season underway, albeit slowly, investors appear to be happy adopting a cautious stance. Closer to home, there was little to drive markets in terms of economic data, so investors were left to watch the trickle of corporate news flow and take cues from global peers. At the close of last week, the latest jobs report from the US was released and missed expectations. There were 103,000 jobs added during March, well below the expected 185,000. The unemployment rate remained at 4.1 per cent while there were some revisions for previous months as well. Wage growth has been a key focus for markets as it is an indicator of inflation. Wages grew slightly faster for the month, up 0.3 per cent, however, were in line on an annualised basis, up 2.7 per cent. It seems that investors are not the only ones in the US that are concerned that inflation may get away. The Federal Reserve minutes showed that this is high on the agenda for the committee. faster than currently proposed to keep inflation under control. The Fed continues to see strong economic growth this year and expects inflation to pick up along with it. Interest rates are the key tool central banks have to control inflation. Chinese President Xi Jinping adopted a more conciliatory stance in terms of trade this week, expressing that China will be adopting a more open market approach and specifically reducing tariffs on car imports. Trade has been a point of contention between the US and China for a number of weeks now and the subsequent uncertainty has put significant downward pressure on global markets. Although no timing was given around when the more open Chinese economy might occur, the market took this as a positive step forward and now sees less chance that there will be a full-blown trade war. There was an escalation of threats from the US, UK and France to Syria and its ally Russia this week, following the alleged chemical attack on Douma. US President Donald Trump has promised a forceful response to the attack and has been backed by French President Emmanuel

Macron and British Prime Minister Theresa May. Russia has warned against any military action against the rogue nation and has said that any US missiles will be shot down. This event and the war of words that has followed is creating further uncertainty in the market and has put investors on edge. The energy sector has been a beneficiary of the event as it has driven oil prices to a multiyear high. The Quarterly Survey of Business Opinion was the local highlight this week, however, it showed that New Zealand businesses remained pessimistic in the first quarter of the year. Although there was a rebound from the prior quarter, businesses have not recovered from the postelection slump as uncertainty around new government policies is weighing. The own activity index was positive, and showed that a large number of firms are considering investment spending in the next 12 months. Hiring intentions also firmed for the quarter. Global reporting season will steal the spotlight over the next couple of weeks after getting off to a slow start this week. Gibbs eyes Sydney weather Sydney’s weather is playing against Danzdanzdance’s bid for glory in tomorrow’s $1 million Gr.1 Australian Oaks (2400m) at Randwick. “She’s done really well since her last race,” trainer Chris Gibbs said. “I wouldn’t mind some rain, but it doesn’t look like we’re going to get it – you can’t control the weather unfortunately.” Danzdanzdance headed to Sydney off the back of her third in the Gr.1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) and she finished fifth in her Australian debut in the Gr.1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill. “She was just too fresh, she pulled and she had no cover,” Gibbs said. “She has definitely improved and we’ve got a nice draw and a very good jockey.” Former champion New Zealand rider Michael Walker was aboard Danzdanzdance in the Vinery and he takes the reins again in the Oaks. Meanwhile, Gibbs has three black type contenders in good order for the Hastings meeting. Dunns appeal penalty Robert and John Dunn have lodged an appeal with the Judicial Control Authority against the $14,000 fine they received late last month. Robert Dunn confirmed that he and his son will seek a review of the fine amount after the prosecuting Racing Integrity Unit only submitted for a $4000 fine. He will resume from a spell in the Motion Entertainment 2YO (1230m) with trainer Brendon Hawtin pleased by the colt’s progress. “I’m really happy with him, he’s had a good break and he trialled up well,” he said. A son of Darci Brahma and the Group Two winner Smoulder, Lite My Cigar won his 800m heat at Cambridge last month following a lay-off after two unplaced runs last year. “He didn’t have much luck in his first start at Pukekohe and then we went to Trentham, probably one of those silly things you do when you’re trying to qualify for the big race (the Karaka Million),” Hawtin said. Lite My Cigar was out of the money in the Gr.2 Wakefield Challenge Stakes (1200m), but has come back a stronger individual this time around. Basketball 3x3 thriving Lincoln University basketballer Sophie Schrader, a former Mid Canterbury representative, will head to China later this year with her 3x3 basketball team. The Lincoln University (LU) side won the women’s title at the recent national tertiary 3x3 tournament and will travel to the 3x3 World University League in Xia-

men, China, in November with the men’s Auckland University team. Auckland were runners-up last year and defeated Otago in their final. The LU women beat University of Canterbury 20-13. LU looked to have the final in the bag after forcing two separate

shot clock violations as part of a 9-0 run to go up 13-4 against the Canterbury. That was until Canterbury’s Laken Wairau started to aggressively shoot from deep, hitting twice to cut the lead to only four points. Lincoln’s Schrader then managed a crucial steal resulting in

a two-point bucket, which fired another Lincoln run to victory. The rise of 3x3 basketball has been seen across the sport this year with the standard of play jumping to new levels. LU head coach Josh Thompson said his side was excited to have another opportunity on the international scene.

Bumper crowd for Broncos clash By DaviD Skipwith The Warriors are preparing to host another bumper crowd for tomorrow’s home game against Brisbane and expect a near sellout for the following week’s top of the table clash against St George. Last weekend the club drew a sell-out crowd of 25,600 to Mt Smart Stadium for the NRL double header that saw Wests Tigers upset Melbourne, before the Warriors claimed their fifth-straight win with a 22-12 victory over North Queensland. Warriors CEO Cameron George said ticket sales for the Broncos match were on course to exceed 20,000 again, while fans were already getting excited in anticipation of the showdown between the currently unbeaten Warriors and Dragons on April 20. Tomorrow’s match is the first of

four home games at Mt Smart in the next five weeks, with the Warriors playing their traditional Anzac Day clash against the Storm in Melbourne in round eight, before returning home to host back-toback games against Wests Tigers and the Sydney Roosters. “We’re confident we’ll get another big crowd,” George said. “There’s a lot of interest. We’d dearly love to sell the place out again but certainly we should have 20,000 plus and our ticket sales are indicating that we’ll certainly get that. “The team are really focused on putting in another good performance against what will be a desperate Brisbane Broncos. “The St George game is selling equally as good as the Broncos game and that’s a great indication 10 days out from the game.” The Dragons, who host Cronul-

Still in with a shot Ashburton’s John Snowden has slipped down the leaderboard in the Queen’s Prize individual fullbore shooting competition at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, though scores remain tight across the top half of the table. Snowden, 49, finished the second day of shooting yesterday on 252-25v, level with Scotsman Alexander Walker in 14th place. Australian Jim Bailey has maintained his place at the top with 255-37v. The field of 33 returns to the Bellmont Shooting Centre tomorrow to shoot over 900 and 1000 yards.

Snowden was in second equal place after Tuesday’s competition, which involved seven shots each over 300, 500 and 600 yards. The highest score for each shot is five; the v in the score is how many times they struck inside the v-bull, which is a smaller ring inside the bullseye and is largely used as a tie-breaker. Yesterday, they shot 10 times over the same distances, with Snowden recording 49-2v over 300 yards, 50-4v over 500 yards and 48-5v over 600 yards, giving him a combined 252-25v for the two days so far. Shooters have a break today and

return to have 15 shots at both 900 and 1000 yards tomorrow. Snowden’s partner in the pairs, Brian Carter, sits in sixth on 25333v. Englishman David Luckman holds the Games record for the event of 401-42v (set at Glasgow in 2014) and currently sits in second on 255-32v. Flags on course will help shooters calculate the effect of wind over the longer distances. A bullet travels at around 3200km/h but can be pushed off target by a breeze, which the shooters will have to make adjustments for.

Entering the final lap, Gaze was leading but decided to pull off to get air in his back tyre. A mechanic blasted a CO2 cannister into the valve in the hope it would last until the finish. Cooper pounced on the advantage. Shortly afterwards, Gaze was ushered through by secondplaced South African Alan Hatherly to continue duelling with his compatriot. He came from an estimated 28s back to regather the lead in an elbow-to-elbow passing manoeuvre, creating one of the Games’ most thrilling moments. “I had the motivation from four years ago where I felt a bit robbed,” Gaze said. “Today I wasn’t accepting anything other than a win. “I’ve built the sort of perseverance to handle something like that [a flat tyre] over the past 12

Mixing it with the best Six Mid Canterbury swimmers will be sharing the water with the countryâ€™s best age-group swimmers in Auckland next week. Josh Giles, Jared Scammell, Bree Middleton, Courtney Elliott, Blake Farr and Bailey Tait are members of the Jennian Homes Ashburton Swim Team competing at the New Zealand Age Group Championships,

where they will share thte pool with recent bronze medallist Lewis Clareburt, who will be returning from the Commonwealth Games to compete for his Wellington team, Capital Swim Club. Clareburt, 18, won bronze in the 400m individual medley and will be competing in that event as well as freestyle, butterfly and backstroke events.
