Methven dairy farmer Matt Walker is still working through compensation claims for losses nearly 16 months after mycoplasma bovis entered his herds. He learned of the disease in March last year and his family has gone through the culling of four herds, but was still “working through bovis’’ and waiting for some compensation to come through. Milk loss claims had yet to be filed. Farmers were not dealing with the same compensation delays for feed and other claims they were last year with the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), but the response process was still lengthy, he said. “I think to be fair to them things have

improved and we haven’t been in testing for quite some time and are past that stage. We have moved past four depopulations of cows, calves and beef animals so we are fully depopulated now and are working to try and get some sort of normality. “It’s been 16 months or so and we still have some time to go.’’ During a visit to Ashburton last November new MPI director-general Ray Smith made it a priority to improve the disease response. Walker estimates his final compensation will be in the order of $6 to $8 million, but that is overshadowed by a larger loss. “They are large numbers, but they aren’t the main loss. You lose the love

of farming and the emotion and stress it puts on you makes you think, gee, do you want to carry on farming? You just have to box on because there’s not much else you can do but work through it.’’ Last October he got to the stage where he was feeding 900 cows completely on a silage diet as they had run out of fodderbeet and large feed bills were mounting, with bills to be paid since settled. Thousands of cows, calves and beef cattle were sent to the meat processors. Yet to be finalised are some animal compensation and loss of milk production compensation.

Cooking up a donation for shuttle By Sue Newman

Patricia McLaren’s happy place is her kitchen and this week she’s been whipping up a storm, baking, pickles, chutneys and jams for a very good cause. While she’s a regular at Ashburton’s Saturday morning Farmers’ Market, tomorrow her stall will be stocked with an even greater array of goodies as she raises money for a cause dear to her heart, the St John shuttle service. She knows first-hand the valuable role the shuttle service plays in the lives of many Ashburton people and said she’d decided, as a user, it was time she gave something back. “They do such a good job and they’ve saved my bacon when I needed to go up to Christchurch. I love using it, you don’t have to bother with driving in all that traffic,” she said. Last year Patricia won a Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year local hero award for her work in raising funds for Ronald McDonald House. Over many years she’s stocked a stall at the weekly farmers’ market with goodies from her kitchen and in the past two years alone, she’s handed over $13,000 in market profits. Nothing goes to waste in her garden – or in the gardens of friends; it’s turned into jams or chutneys that are then sold with profits going back to community organisations.

Tomorrow’s fundraiser for the St John shuttle service will have a big range of her usual goodies, but she’ll have jars of freshly made cherry conserve and corn relish available as well as her very

popular cheese straws. “Everyone seems to love those,” she said. For her, baking and preserving for charity is the work that gets her up every day, Patricia said.

“I get so excited when I’m driving over the bridge to the market.” Her spare bedroom, hall cupboards and even her lounge are usually stacked with produce

ready to take to the market or to give to people in need. The St John shuttle fundraising stall will be in business from 8.30am to 12.30pm tomorrow in Ashburton’s West Street carpark.

Kiwibank and Post changes cut Western Union adrift By Sue Newman

Ashburton’s Western Union office is slated for closure as its two partner businesses Kiwibank and NZ Post move out of the East Street building that has been their base for many years. NZ Post will no longer be a stand-alone business from May 13, becoming an agency as part of Ashburton’s Paper Plus. Kiwibank is also on the move

and will open in its new purpose-built home at 56 Cass Street on the same day. The Kiwibank move involved a significant investment in the Ashburton District, but the new model was one the company was looking forward to rolling out in the town, a spokesperson said. Those changes will leave Western Union customers in limbo as NZ Post and Kiwibank have both

confirmed it will not be part of their new business models. One user said he regularly sent money to his family in the United States and knows that with the large number of people on working visas in the Ashburton District, many people would be lost without the service. Transfers could be done online, but the fees were higher, he said. Paper Plus owner Terry McNab

said he was surprised when told he would not get the Western Union agency as part of his deal with NZ Post. “I only found that out yesterday but I’m going to chase it because I thought it was coming to us,” he said. He’s keen to take the money transfer service on saying it would not only fit well within the postal agency, but that it would see a much needed ser-

vice for the district retained in the district. Ashburton needed the service because of the large number of people who were working here and sending money home to their families, McNab said. A Western Union New Zealand spokesperson was unable to provide details on the organisation’s future in Ashburton, saying those details would be provided by head office.

One of Mid Canterbury’s greatest electric vehicle (EV) enthusiasts was the first to charge at Methven’s new fast-charger station as it opened this week. Matt Harris is solutions architect at EA Networks in Ashburton, as well as Mid Canterbury Champion for the Better NZ Trust which has its annual electric vehicle road trip coming through Methven tomorrow. Harris and colleague, engineering services manager Shaneel Singh, visited the newly installed station on Thursday to switch it on. The station is located behind the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall Methven, opposite The Blue Pub. It will now be available 24/7, alongside EA Networks’ other stations at Rakaia, Ashburton and EA Networks headquarters. Harris bought his Nissan Leaf two years ago for $11,000, and said it was working out perfectly as his family’s second car. With a 15-kilometre journey from his home at Lake Hood into work each day in

Ashburton, the car was perfect, and its range was also suitable for a trip to Christchurch. “It completely makes sense from an environmental and financial point of view,” Harris said. And with modern electric vehicles having ranges up to 600 kilometres, and fast-charger stations requiring an average 25 minutes of charge time, it was making sense for more and more people to switch to electric. Harris was looking forward to the Better NZ Trust road trip stopping at the new Methven station at 3pm tomorrow. A variety of electric vehicles would be represented, including luxury Teslas. Car owners were hoping members of the public would turn out to find out all about driving electric, and take the opportunity of going for a test drive. Singh said the new station would help attract people to town and assist in opening up the nearby scenic highway to electric vehicle drivers. “Electric is the next revolution in the transportation sector,” Singh said.

Science block makeover nears completion A half a million dollar makeover of the Mount Hutt College science block is nearing completion. Principal John Schreurs said the one-year refurbishment in B Block has resulted in two upgraded science labs, as well as an upgraded classroom, technician’s area and toilets. “Property and science staff have worked very hard to get everything back into the spaces,” Schreurs said. Just some finishing touches were needed and the facilities would be ready at the beginning of Term 2. Teacher Sidinei Teixeira said she and students were looking forward to doing all their experiments and study in the new labs. She was particularly pleased to see the labs now up to modern health and safety standards, with wash facilities such as eyerinse basins and a shower. The Ministry of Education funded the makeover, with a price tag of more than $500,000, as part of regular capital expenditure in the school’s five to ten year plan. PHOTO SUSAN SANDYS

The Christchurch restaurant owner famous for teaching his customers Te Reo is bringing his passion for Maori language to Ashburton. Anton Matthews is bringing his FUSH Te Reo roadshow to the Ashburton Trust Event Centre on Tuesday, April 16. He is also bringing his Little FUSH waka pop-up restaurant. Ashburton District Council’s Welcoming Communities is supporting the roadshow, which will include a two-hour Te Reo class for beginners. The class is fun and interactive and begins at 6pm, said council’s community development advisor Ilana Batchelor. Everyone is welcome. The pop-up restaurant will be set up on the corner of Havelock and East Streets from noon to 2pm and

then they will be serving their kai from 4pm at the event centre carpark before the Te Reo class begins at 6pm. People are welcome to just turn up on the day, but to guarantee a spot, they should grab a free ticket at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/ mobilising-te-reo-ashburton-tickets-59280344105. Matthews gained national attention when he advertised Te Reo classes at his Wigram fish and chip shop; the classes attracted hundreds and had to be moved to bigger venues. Batchelor said the Ashburton evening, from 6pm-8pm, was about fun and learning. People could learn about Maori pronunciation, use of basic words and phrases they could use at home and in the workplace.

Water safety video a success A water safety video released four weeks ago is making an impact with nearly 10,000 Facebook and You Tube views. The video was created by Ashburton irrigation schemes, Ashburton District Council, Water Safety New Zealand and local community members for rural communities, highlighting the need to be vigilant to prevent drownings of young children. Two of the stars of the video are Mayfield pre-schoolers Angus and George Dampney who live on a farm which has a water race close to their house. It also has duck ponds, irrigation and effluent ponds and an effluent wedge. “We are around water all the time. Water safety is really important and the danger it can pose to children needs to be taken seriously,” their mother Hayley Dampney said. The video was produced after two rural children were drowned around Canterbury over the past few months. While the overall numbers of preventable drownings in New Zealand fell significantly in 2018, from 92 in 2017 to 68 in 2018, drownings of young children to date in 2019 is already at four. In the last 10 years, there have been 58 preventable toddler drownings in New Zealand.

When it comes to votes in an animal popularity poll, rats are among the creatures least likely to make it to the top of the list. But for Ashburton artist Lisa Harper, choosing a rat as her subject for this year’s Zonta Ashburton Female Art Awards was a choice that proved to be an all-round winner with the public. Her Reno Rat acrylic on canvas painting won the people’s choice award and no one was more surprised than Harper. “I was just pleased to be accepted, I didn’t even think I’d make it and to win this award is great,” she said. Reno Rat started out as a small and simple piece, but as he evolved the work

became more complex. The wallpaper on the wall he is emerging through took hours to complete, Harper said. She’s been painting since childhood and takes her inspiration from animals. “I love capturing the character of my subject to allow the viewer to get a sense of their soul,” she said. By using acrylics Harper said she was able to build up detail in the rat’s fur and to put a sparkle in his eyes. Rats might not be the most popular of animals, but as Reno Rat started evolving, she said she became quite fond of him. Premier Award winner was Melissa MacLeod and the Young Generation Award winner was Lucinda Webber.

Carpentry apprentice of the year title up for grabs By Sue Newman

Across the Ashburton District there are dozens of carpentry apprentices working for dozens of building companies and one of those apprentices could become 2019 apprentice of the year. The search is on for this year’s top apprentice as part of the Registered Master Builders’ Carters competition for the building and construction sector. The event is open to all carpentry apprentices under the age of 30. The awards recognise both the excellence among carpentry apprentices and acknowlege the employers who contrib-

ute to the industry by investing in talented young people. Last year’s winner was Peter Ravn, a fine arts graduate, who switched career paths after struggling to find work in his chosen field of set design. He switched careers to gain experience to take into his first choice career, but has decided he is enjoying carpentry so much he’s in the industry to stay. In brief Police officer charged An Auckland police officer has been charged with dangerous driving after being involved in a pursuit last year. Auckland City District Commander Superintendent Karyn Malthus said the 30-year-old police officer appeared in Auckland District Court yesterday on a charge of dangerous driving. A police spokesman said the pursuit took place in central Auckland in October. The officer was charged following a review of a fleeing driver incident that allegedly occurred on-duty while undertaking urgent driving duties. The officer was currently on restricted duties. Police were unable to comment further because the matter was before the courts. - NZME

Police nab assets, guns, drugs

A man is in hospital with a stab wound after an assault in Petone. Emergency services were called to an address on Hutt Rd at about 2.40pm yesterday. A police spokeswoman said they were working to understand the circumstances of the incident but it appeared the parties involved were known to one another. Two people were assisting police with their inquiries and no one else was being sought in relation to the incident, she said. - NZME

The Comancheros gang which police raided in Auckland today were being assisted by notorious international drug syndicate the Sinaloa cartel, police have revealed. Eighty police executed 10 search warrants across Auckland yesterday, seizing $3.7 million in assets including luxury vehicles, cash and weapons and arresting senior members of the gang. At a press conference yesterday, Detective Superintendent Greg Williams said the Auckland chapter of the Australian gang had grown quickly since members were deported from Australia in recent years. He also revealed that it had been working with an international partner to allegedly import methamphetamine into the country. “The reality is that most of our gangs across the country are

dealing in these drugs for the profit,” Williams said. “And we’re seeing a number of international groups – in this case the Sinaloa cartel was also involved – we are seeing a number of these international partners wanting to send the drugs down here to sell.” Founded by recently imprisoned drug lord Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman, the Sinaloa cartel is considered the largest drug trafficking organisation in the world. Five people appeared in court in Auckland yesterday on charges of conspiracy to import methamphetamine and conspiracy to import the ingredients used in manufacturing the drug. The gang had allegedly planned to import $1 million in precursor drugs. Police national manager of the financial crime group Iain Chapman said the raids were important because they had targeted

a lawyer and an accountant who were alleged to have enabled the gang to launder their money. “Police have the tools are resources available to us to effectively target this profession,” he said at the press conference. “So I want to make it really clear that if you in your professional capacity choose to enable an organised crime group to flourish through laundering of their funds, that you can expect … full and robust attention from police.” Another important factor in the raids were the nature of the assets seized, Chapman said. As well as two properties, police had seized four V-Rod Harley-Davidson motorcycles, three Range Rovers and a Rolls-Royce. “These are really significant assets. They’re status symbols that a gang would choose to use as a sphere of influence to entice younger people to join that gang. “So by removing these types of

assets, we’re removing the desire to join these gangs.” Also seized was $60,000 in cash, a loaded pistol, and an MSSA pistol-grip shotgun and ammunition. The arrests and seizures had “dealt a major blow” to the organisation, Williams said. The gang was formed in New Zealand as a result of the controversial deportation of expat Kiwis from Australia, known as “501s”, he said. The gang had since expanded to around 20 members and associates. He said that behind the group’s flashy image, which members promoted on social media, was enormous damage to communities caused by their alleged drug dealing. “We just want the community to remember that behind that is an immense amount of suffering. “While they deal those drugs, those people and their families are suffering from … addiction.”

Police search for man after mosque incident NZME Christchurch police say they are reviewing the way they responded to a man who shouted abuse outside the Christchurch mosque where 42 people were killed. Two armed police officers were at the scene when the man caused a disturbance outside the mosque at around 4.30pm on Wednesday. Video taken at the time shows they spoke to the man before letting him go. Yesterday, police said they were now searching for the man, who was described as Caucasian and was wearing a black “Trump for New Zealand” shirt and a black baseball cap.

Canterbury District Commander Superintendent John Price said the incident was being treated extremely seriously. “I spent time at the Masjid Al Noor mosque last night and the community is understandably shaken by this behaviour,” he said. “Two armed officers were outside the mosque at the time [and] we are reviewing our response to this incident. “Our community has no tolerance for those who target or victimise others because of their identity, and nor does police. “This is especially so for members of our Muslim community who are already dealing with so

much.” A post on the Muslims in Christchurch & Canterbury Facebook page said the man was “swearing and saying that all Muslims are terrorists” and “that we hate Jesus, in addition to saying that we all need to leave NZ, among other things”. The man was outside the mosque for around 15 minutes while he “kicked and tried to damage some of the memorial items” along Deans Ave in front of the masjid. A photo of the man surfaced online of him being talked to by police. Yesterday, a police spokesperson said the man could face criminal charges.

“Police are aware of a man who acted in a disorderly manner on Deans Ave yesterday, and are actively seeking him. He could face a disorderly behaviour charge,” the spokesman said. Armed police remain outside the Al Noor Mosque where a gunman entered during Friday prayer on March 15 and killed 42 people. The shooter then went across town to Linwood Mosque and killed another seven people. Several people have been charged with various offences since the attack, including a 28-year-old Australian national who faces 50 charges of murder and 39 charges of attempted murder.

A boatie who came into strife when his boat began to sink in the Tiri Channel near Whangaparaoa has been rescued by Coastguard. Coastguard North Shore Rescue were notified about the incident by police around 2.40pm yesterday and emergency services were deployed. Police Eagle helicopter, Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter, maritime police and coastguard were all deployed to locate him. Police said the man received medical treatment for non-life threatening injuries. - NZME

Census prosecutions Statistics New Zealand is prosecuting 60 people for refusing to fill out last year’s Census. Yesterday it was announced one in seven Kiwis had failed to complete the national population assessment but only 60 will be prosecuted. Everyone must complete a Census form and those who don’t or who provide false or incomplete information can be fined up to $500, under the Statistics Act 1975. - NZME

Retrial ordered A bitterly-fought defamation case between former politician Colin Craig and lawyer Jordan Williams will get another chapter. The Supreme Court yesterday ordered a retrial, saying that a High Court jury in the case had been misdirected. Craig was elated, saying it had been a long fight since the jury ruled in 2016 that he had defamed Williams and should pay him $1.27 million. “It is ancient history in some respects,” he said. “And ultimately there are no great winners in defamation proceedings. “But I think it’s important to get to the end of this one.” Williams, who was ordered by the Supreme Court to pay $35,000 in costs, said he did not want to comment. - NZME

Death penalty sought AP California prosecutors have announced they will seek the death penalty if they convict the man suspected of being the notorious Golden State Killer who eluded capture for decades. The move comes less than a month after Governor Gavin Newsom announced a moratorium on executing any of the 737 inmates on the nation’s largest death row. Newsom’s reprieve lasts only so long as he is governor and does not prevent prosecutors from seeking nor judges and juries from imposing death sentences. Prosecutors from four counties briefly announced their decision during a short court hearing for Joseph DeAngelo. He was arrested a year ago based on DNA evidence linking him to at least 13 murders and more than 50 rapes across California in the 1970s and 80s. He stood expressionless in an orange jail uniform, staring forward from a courtroom cage, as prosecutors from Sacramento, Santa Barbara, Orange and Ventura spoke. Big bucks from Swift Music superstar Taylor Swift says the efforts of a Tennessee LGBTQ advocacy group to fight a handful of contentious bills moving inside the state’s Republicancontrolled General Assembly inspired her to make a sizeable donation. According to the Tennessee Equality Project, Swift donated $US113,000 ($NZ167,574) to the organisation on Tuesday. The group posted a handwritten letter from Swift, who cited a recent petition of Tennessee faith leaders who oppose a series of bills they say target LGBTQ individuals. Swift praised the religious leaders for “standing up against the ‘Slate of Hate’ in our state legislature.”

Making an offer When people buy houses on TV reality shows there’s usually a set piece where the host sits somewhere with the buyers and they make an offer on a property over the phone. There’s no paperwork, no hassles and nothing written down. In real life it’s not quite that simple. “The rules governing real estate transactions in New Zealand require all offers to be presented to sellers in writing,” says Real Estate Authority (REA) chief executive Kevin LampenSmith. “A written offer provides the sellers with a clear record of all the information about the offer and is a solid base for further negotiations. If, for whatever reason, a written offer can’t be provided, the real estate agent can present a verbal offer to the seller. It’s not enough for them to say, ‘Ms Brown will offer you $657,000 for your home’. They must provide full details of all the conditions, so the seller is able to

make an informed decision.” In any case, a written sale and purchase agreement must be signed and accepted by all parties for a sale to be valid. So, while it’s fine in principle to present a verbal offer, Lampen-Smith says getting it written down is a safer bet. “It’s better for you as a buyer too – nothing focuses the mind like writing down exactly how much you are planning to spend on a property. Don’t forget to get your lawyer involved

before you sign anything; a sale and purchase agreement is a legal contract and you can’t just change your mind after you sign it.” When more than one potential buyer makes a written offer on a property, the seller can choose whichever one they think the best (and then open further negotiations, if necessary). “Although real estate agents work for the seller, they are required to treat everyone fairly and in good faith,” Lampen-Smith says. “If you make an offer on a property and there are other offers on the table, the real estate agent must tell you that it has become a multi-offer process.” Some agencies will ask you to sign an acknowledgement of multi-offer form, he says. “If you’re told that you are now in a multi-offer process, you should be aware that it’s time to put your best offer forward.

You may not have the chance to make changes or improve your offer later. You should also be told if your competitor buyers pull out and you’re the only one left, in case you want to review your offer before it goes to the seller.” Remember that the most attractive offer to a seller may not be the one with the highest figure written on it, Lampen-Smith says. “Be aware, too, that a seller may choose to negotiate with you but that doesn’t mean they’ve accepted your offer. If you don’t agree on the seller’s terms and conditions listed in the sale and purchase agreement, they can choose to move on to negotiate with another buyer.” The next time you make an offer, make sure you do as much research as you can about the property and get your finances sorted. Talk to your lawyer about the paperwork – and make sure you put any offer in writing.

Although I still feel like I’m only just farewelling summer, it’s nice to be able to slacken off from my watering programme and think about my winter garden. Luckily the end of warmer weather doesn’t also mean the end of bright colourful flowers in the garden. Now’s the perfect time to inject new bursts of colour – and the easiest way is to plant some pansies. The brightly coloured overlapping petals of the pansy cheer up any garden spot. They’re cute, yet bold, come in a rainbow of colours and, best of all, are one of the easiest flowers to grow. Pansies flower right from autumn through spring, often when it feels like

there’s not much colour happening in your garden. They’re extremely hardy – surviving frosts, wind and rain. In one to two months you’ll start to see a burst of colour coming through. Once they’re flowering, pick them to encourage more blooms. The more you pick, the more will grow. Arrange your pansies in a vase with some interesting foliage, to bring bursts of colour into your house this winter. And for the chefs out there – pansies are also edible, having a sweet grassy flavour. Use them to bring colour to winter salads, or to garnish a cake. You can even freeze them in ice cubes and add to your drinks.

Bolts from the blue Bernard Egan MOTORING

ometimes people appear out of the blue. Things do too. Both these happened recently. My friend Tony Adams and I had been having a chat as we sometimes do. A chat which covered a wide range of topics. Those readers who have immediately thought no doubt cars were mentioned would be correct. After all Tony knows a fair bit about cars. Anyway, out of the blue appeared Graham and Heather McEvoy, which was really neat because they are great people who neither Tony nor I had seen for what seems like a very long time. Graham said “Don’t go away, I’ve got something in the car I think would interest you and we’ve been waiting for the chance to catch up”. So seeing Graham and Heather came out of the blue, so did the object he had to share. That object being a book. A pretty old book, a book which has been well thumbed over and is showing

its age but in a lovely way – it has a great patina. The cover and other publication details have gone, but the contents indicate it was probably published around 1923 or 1924. It’s a motorists’ Road Guide complied by the Canterbury Automobile Association, which was affiliated to the New Zealand Automobile Union. The publishers state it is a motorist’s duty to join the Association, which at the time had 1800 members. A Branch of the Association chaired by D. Friedlander existed in Ashburton at the time of publication. Contents include a report from the Good Roads Association of New Zealand appears, which includes the objects of that organisation. Many of the objects have a familiar ring to them, like securing better results from public money expended on roads. Two hundred and twenty four pages of the book have survived and these consist mainly of maps and touring instructions along with useful hints for motorists. The hints are fascinating. For example, should you meet a restive horse, pull up and assist the rider to pass. This is followed by a reminder “if this rule is more honoured motorists would have a better name in country districts”. Another instruction is to always observe the speed limit indicated on the finger signs, some being quoted as a speedy 10 miles per hour. It goes on to say “always start out early especially where roads are not so good because one never knows what might happen along the way”. And an extensive list of what to take when touring indicates there was no end of things which might happen. Insulated wire, insulated tape, spare bolts and nuts, two files – one flat one round, copper and asbestos washers, hacksaw blades and a small vice are among an extensive range of spares recommended. Not sure where one stashed the luggage! The advertisements provide an interesting look back both in regard to the products and the providers. Some of the touring instructions are a reminder of the challenges faced by early motorists. Part of the trail to the Ashburton River Mouth is said to be a road following the river bounded by willows which is somewhat rough in places. Another part of the route is described as an excellent road, but winding and narrow so motorists must keep an eye out because it is impossible to see many yards ahead. Over Easter there will be vehicles in Ashburton for the Vintage Car Club National South Island Easter Rally which are

older than this book. And some vehicles which are a little bit younger. This brings to mind a couple of thoughts. One wonders how many of those early

cars had a copy of this book on board. Maybe this copy was in one of those cars. An owner of the book certainly followed some of the roads because notations have been made on some of the route descriptions. And it’s the route descriptions which bring to mind the other thought. Those taking part on the Easter Rally will follow routes mapped out by the organisers. They will be venturing into places mentioned in the book, but getting there on roads which are far better and this is of course reflected in the different language used in modern day instructions. The terminology used back in the day is delightful. Look out for all these incredible vehicles during Easter time, and if you can visit the massive car display being staged at the Racecourse on Easter Saturday between 10.00am and 2.00pm. The book was a useful – probably essential – guide when published and knowing it came in handy for a motorist or motorists back in the day makes it rather special. Over time it has, and will continue to provide, fascinating information and be a reminder pioneer motoring. It’s so good Graham and Heather – along with this fascinating book – appeared out of the blue.

A plug-in Escape

he new-generation Ford Escape SUV will bring a highly efficient hybrid model to one of the most popular segments in New Zealand, offering customers an advanced powertrain alongside greater practicality, improved cabin space all wrapped in distinctive style. The Escape will be the first electrified Ford model offered in New Zealand, with significant investment in advanced technology filtering through to local customers. When the battery reaches its lowest state-of-charge, the Escape automatically reverts to EV Auto mode – supplementing petrol engine power with electric motor assistance using recaptured energy for optimised fuel-efficiency. The all-new Escape introduces a distinctive exterior with premium proportions. A streamlined silhouette improves aerodynamics, for better economy, and incorporates the longer wheelbase. This creates a larger footprint on the road benefiting ride and stability; a longer bonnet; further reclined rear windshield angle; and lower roofline. ecord-breaking racer Zef Eisenberg survived a 195mph scare to establish a stunning new benchmark for the Flying Mile at Pendine Sands in South

Wales. Riding a specially made 400bhp supercharged Suzuki Hayabusa that was built and prepared by Eisenberg’s MADMAX Racing Team, he set a two-way average of 182.40mph last weekend. In 1927, Sir Malcolm Campbell reached 174.8mph at Pendine in his iconic aero-engined Blue Bird. That record was unbroken until 2015, when actor Idris Elba achieved 180.36mph along the historic beach in a 650hp Bentley Super Sport twin-turbo W12 – yet the intrepid Eisenberg needed only a single run in both directions on the Green Monster to surpass them both, with a rear tyre that was found to be falling apart after the first run! “The bike had been spinning the rear wheel for two miles at 240mph,” explained Eisenberg. “We were using a GP racing tyre, too – the best you can get, but I assume it’s not used to that much power or wheelspin. That’s why these records are so hard to

For the third run, a harder compound of tyre was used, but the extreme demands of running at maximum rpm for nearly three miles – and constant wheelspin at such high revs – took its toll on the motorcycle’s highly stressed engine. “I was doing 195mph approaching the end of the mile,” said Eisenberg of the moment the engine blew, “and my helmet visor and leathers were sprayed with black engine oil, obscuring my vision. “I lost sight of the finish flags, but I couldn’t just slam on the brakes due to the sand. Fortunately, I managed to keep it straight and bring it to a stop. “Then I noticed engine oil spraying onto the hot exhaust, but unless I jumped off and dropped the bike, I couldn’t get off because I couldn’t put the kick-stand down on the sand! Luckily, the oil never caught fire on the hot exhaust, as the bike would have burst into flames.”

Sticky one pot roast chicken

1 ■■ Preheat oven to 180°C. Heat the oil in a large heavy-based ovenproof frying pan/ casserole dish over medium heat. ■■ Fry the bacon until it is slightly brown. Add the whole shallots, baby potatoes, bay leaves and fry off until everything is coated in the bacon fat. ■■ Deglaze with white wine. Place the chicken to the middle of the casserole dish making sure shallots and potatoes aren’t under the chicken so they can get

golden and crispy while roasting. Dot in herbs, lemon and garlic. ■■ Cover with the lid and transfer to the oven. Cook for 1 hour. ■■ Take the lid off and cook uncovered for a further 30 minutes or until the chicken and vegetables are golden. ■■ Sprinkle with salt and pepper and serve with salad greens. A big day in the future of our council W

ith a local government election just around the corner, today could be a big day in just how things get set to play out when the community goes to the polls to choose their elected members. We’ve been waiting with bated breath for the best part of this week, for the decision to be announced by the Local Government Commission who have been charged with ultimately determining whether there will by nine representatives around the council table post October or the current number of 12. It’s been a lengthy process to get to this point. But no one can argue against the fact that it hasn’t been fair and reasonable.

After deciding at a council level that nine was the preferred option, the matter went public for consultation and four objectors were found to a reduction in representational numbers. Of those four, only one wished to publicly object which resulted in a hearing with the Local Government Commission to hear both arguments before making

their decision, which has been reserved since March 21st. Initially an outcome was expected on Wednesday, then it was pushed back to yesterday and with no official word last night, one can only presume that it will come to light at some stage today. And while it may not seem on face value that it’s a major in the make up of our district council and its councillors, in an election year – this close to the moment of truth when we find out who’s in the game leading into voting in October, it has been well drawn out. The difference between nine and 12 numerically might not seem like much, but when you consider that one of those seats

that will be removed comes from the eastern ward and the other two will come from the urban ward, then the permutations of what that could mean for some potential candidates will have them very interested in what the final decision is. As has been written in this space before for the community it won’t mean much of a change, the same level of expectation will be placed on the nine councillors as is currently placed on the 12. Their workloads may increase, but it’s not going to be at the detriment of the community. Then there is of course the possibility that the commission decides that there is enough in the objections to warrant not

allowing the reduction in representation numbers. The good money would suggest that a real lack of weight in numbers behind the objections will see the change accepted without much fuss, but there’s always a small possibility when it comes to toss of the coin decisions. Nominations open for candidates to start putting their names forward for this year’s election in July and there’s enough word on the street to suggest that a few new names might be looking to throw their hats into the ring. They, like all those currently sitting around the table, will be, like us, awaiting this decision with great anticipation.

’m a bit excited about the future of sport in our region. I bet you haven’t heard those words much in the last 10 years. Yeah I know we are not in a good space currently, in fact in some codes things couldn’t get much worse. Take cricket for example, and I don’t want to be one of those “back in my day” commentators, but back in my day you had to fight like hell to get into a senior club cricket squad. Once you made it, if you didn’t turn up for training you were no chance for a run on Saturday. The past few years people are frantically ringing around to try and drum up an eleven to take the paddock. Now the face of senior cricket has changed, for the better in my opinion, to a mid-week T20 competition. If that drags more people to or even back to the sport, then that’s a good thing. Sometimes you have to tear things down to rebuild them eh? That leads me to my positive outlook for the future. I see a two-pronged attack needed for sport to recover in this and probably every other region in the country. Getting the right people involved with the off-field side of sport and then getting those people to repair the gaping hole that is youth sport. We seem to have a substantial crop of junior sports people and then out of nowhere a mad man hops into a combine harvester and ploughs through the middle of them, leaving gaping holes

But I think there are ways we can stoke up that internal fire a bit, without having to use a hot poker. One of the major issues with youth sport these days is the amount of screen time that sport disrupts. So let’s play them at their own game! No, I’m not suggesting players should be doing status updates on Facebook between overs or selfies at halftime. But get the team to create a Facebook page, Instagram account and twitter handle for their side. Create some buzz online about the team and sport online. It’s also a quick and easy way for a coach or manager to share some news amongst the team and supporters. “Hey Johnny,

post up that there will an earlier start to practice this week”. You might get some of their friends or school mates looking on and wanting to be part of the action or turning up to support the team. The other essential is the right people coaching and managing these youth teams. I’m not having a pop at any past coaches, simply looking forward positively. It can’t be a teacher turning up after school because no one else will do it and they once played two games for the 2nd XV when they were in the sixth form at Havatokatoka High in 1979 and therefore drew the short straw. They must have some mana about them, someone the kids will look up to straight away. They have been there and done that. This is the element that excites me just now, we have a good collection of these people in place

right now which bodes well for the future of sport. I think of college rugby and the names Morgan, Middleton, Donald, Galbraith and Hobbs involved. Harrison, Naish and Winter in cricket. Mitchell, Tappin and Shaw in netball. Kerr, Johnstone and Douglas in basketball. Grobler and Leath in boxing. Van Rooyen and Leonard in tennis. These are just a few of the ‘right’ people involved in sport right now, hopefully guiding sport back on the tracks to a return to the good old days. Future-proofing your retirement By Tamsyn Parker An average salary earner could have over $1.5 million saved in their KiwiSaver fund by retirement if they start young, invest in a growth fund and put 10 per cent of their income into it. But the same 25 year old would only have around $408k if they contribute 3 per cent and invest in a conservative fund from the age of 25. Figures crunched by research firm Canstar reveal how much of a difference it could make to a person’s nest egg by saving at higher contribution rates in the wake of new rates being added to the options on offer. From April 1 KiwiSaver members were able to choose to save at 6 per cent and 10 per cent of their salary adding to the existing 3 per cent, 4 per cent and 8 per cent options. Jose George, general manager of Canstar New Zealand, said the key message was to start early and be disciplined. “It is much harder for someone on $50k to save 10 per cent than

someone on $100k. “But if you are disciplined and save over time it makes a lot of difference.” The research showed waiting until the age of 45 to start saving made it much harder to get a large pot of money even for someone on a higher salary. A 45-year-old earning $50K and saving 10 per cent in a growth fund could have around $342,000 while a person earning $100k could

The last five years have seen a particularly strong run in the share market and a down-turn is anticipated at some point in the future. “The challenge we have is since the global financial crisis we haven’t had a down-turn – so we can’t really factor in anything that hasn’t happened yet, but we know will happen.” They also assume a starting balance of $17,130 – the current average in people’s KiwiSaver accounts, an employer contribution of 3 per cent and that the salary rises at a rate of 2.16 per cent every year. The good news is that KiwiSaver members should be able to get a much clearer idea of how much they will have saved by age 65 from next year with a change being slated for annual member statements which would mean providers have to tell people how much they could have at 65 and what this would translate to in terms of a weekly amount.

It is one of many strategies.” He said people should pay off high interest debt before increasing contributions to KiwiSaver and aim to pay off their mortgage by retirement. George also warned that the figures produced by Canstar were not inflation adjusted. While $1.5 million might sound like a lot it would potentially buy a lot less by the time a person reached 65. “While it looks attractive in today’s money it’s not worth as much. Focus on global economy I t was a mixed week for global markets as concerns over the outlook for the global economy continued to weigh on sentiment. On Tuesday, the International Monetary Fund cut its global growth forecast for 2019 to 3.3 per cent, the lowest expansion since 2016 and down from its earlier projection of 3.5 per cent in January. Back home, the NZX continued to cool after hitting a record high last Tuesday. Retirement village operators remained under pressure as fears of a softening housing market continued to weigh on the sector. Shares in Trustpower fell 2.4 per cent after it dropped its profit guidance, due to below average generation volumes. The company also warned that it expects 2020 earnings to drop further. In corporate news, Tourism Holdings’ TH2 venture with Thor Industries will merge its CamperMate and Roadtrippers Australasia businesses with Australian outdoor tourism marketplaces GoSeeAustralia and Outdoria. The transaction brings together all four businesses into one entity, in which TH2 will become the largest shareholder with a 35 per cent stake. Off the main index, Comvita announced it has entered into a conditional agreement to acquire the remaining 49 per cent of its China Joint Venture for $20.8m. The honey maker will acquire the JV by issuing 4.05 million Comvita shares at $4.35 per share and an additional cash payment of

$3.2m. Chief Executive Scott Coulter said “this completes the final piece of the jigsaw with respect to our China Strategy, which we have been working on for a number of years”. Shares gained 0.7 per cent following the announcement. The United States announced it was considering tariffs on $11bn of European goods, heightening tensions over a long-running translantic aircraft subsidy dispute. President Donald Trump tweeted “The World Trade Organisation finds that the European Union subsidies to Airbus has adversely impacted the United States, which will now put tariffs on $11b of EU products! … The EU has taken advantage of the US on trade for many years. It will soon stop!”. His comments came a day after the US Trade Representative proposed a list of EU products targeted for tariffs, ranging from large commercial aircraft to dairy products and wine, as retaliation for European aircraft subsidies. In response, the European Commission said it had started to draw up plans to retaliate over Boeing subsidies. The European Central Bank (ECB) President Mario Draghi left interest rates unchanged and said risks surrounding the euro area

were “tilted toward the downside”. Draghi said the ECB has been forced to backtrack its plans to tighten monetary policy, due to the climate of the global economy. Staying in Europe, European leaders have offered to delay Brexit until the end of October. However, the UK government has yet to sign off the extension. UK lawmakers have so far rejected Theresa May’s agreement three times but they’ve also failed to reach a majority of support for an alternative option. The UK was meant to leave the EU on March 29 following two years of negotiations. Looking ahead, the focus will be on the US reporting season where investors will be able to take the pulse of corporate America. Earnings growth has been very strong over the last four or five quarters, in part due to the Trump Administration’s tax cuts that were implemented in early 2018. This helped push annual earnings growth to more than 20 per cent, levels we hadn’t seen since 2011. However, the one-off boost from the tax cuts is behind us and the global economy has slowed over the past six months. In awe of local sprinter Racing reporter Matt Markham takes a look at the racing week that was and has a look at the weekend ahead. Signify still going strong It’s hard not to have anything but admiration for Ashburton sprinter, Signify. The Snooky Cowan-trained seven-yearold registered the 11th win of his career at Riccarton last Saturday when beating a handy field of sprinters by the barest of margins. Add into that a further 17 placings and his 50 start career makes for some really good reading with more than $430,000 in the bank. At seven years old and now a rating over 100, things should be tough for the son of Perfectly Ready, but his will to win is his biggest asset. He doesn’t win by big margins, but he does win and knows how to fight right to the line. He races again tomorrow and will carry a big weight but is sure to give another huge sight. A winner of the Telegraph Handicap last season and placed in the race again this year, he has to rate as one of the best gallopers to come out of Ashburton in recent years and that observation in itself raises some interesting discussion points. Chertsey Trophy Day this weekend I’ve got really fond memories growing up of heading along to what was the old Chertsey Gymkhana at the Chertsey Racecourse for their big day of the year. There were never enough stalls for horse and most were geared up after being tied up to the floats they travelled in and some of the best of the best would step out onto the track and get involved in the action. Sadly, those days are no more. But the Trophy Day aspect of the occasion still lives on, just a little further down the road at Ashburton and Chertsey’s big day just so happens to be tomorrow. Horses, trainers, drivers and owners from all over Canterbury and further afield

will travel to Ashburton for the day and for those inclined to follow a bit of form from the trials around these parts, there’s always a winner or two to be found as well.

South Island racing still the poor cousin I had an interesting chat with leading South Island hoop, Terry Moseley at the trials at Ashburton on Tuesday. We were chatting about the racing week ahead with trials then races at both Wingatui on Thursday and then Riccarton on Saturday and I made the comment that it was a busy week for the South Island jocks. Terry’s reply was pretty straight to the point. “I wish it was like that every week,” he said. There’s no hiding from the fact that the horse population in the South Island in thoroughbred circles plays a direct role in a

lesser number of race meetings than up in the North Island, but surely between Canterbury and Southland there is enough of a presence to see two meetings a week. Often there are two, but it’s not consistent and it can make it hard to place horses, especially coming into the colder parts of the year where tracks can deteriorate.

How good is he? If you haven’t managed to lock your eyes on the talk horse of the harness world at the moment, U May Cullect, I’d suggest you jump onto the Harness Racing New Zealand website and have a look at him winning the last race at Addington last Friday night. The Southland trained, driven and owned pacer is something special – but just how special seems to be a sticking point among racing fans around the country. After two stunning wins to open his career in his home region, he trekked up to Addington last week and dished out a beating to a handy field of pacers at HQ – yes, they weren’t world beaters that he took on, but he treated them with contempt and showed a bit of class doing it. By Gotta Go Cullect, there’s so much about him that reminds you of his grand sire, Christian Cullen. That effortless way of covering the ground and seemingly flawless and beautiful action. He’s an injury-prone pacer though, so let’s hope we get to see him live up to somewhere near his full potential. On what I’ve seen, he’s got Cup class written all over him.

Again it’s a big weekend of racing in the Canterbury region with plenty to get involved with. Action kicks off today with a rare Friday

afternoon harness racing meeting at Addington, don’t get caught out. With the Crusaders and Highlanders match on later tonight the meeting has become a day meeting and there’s plenty of good racing to consume. Saturday sees a return to Riccarton for another day of the Autumn Carnival. After a huge day last week the momentum should be continued with some great horse flesh doing battle. Then, on Sunday it’s back to Rangiora for Rangiora Classic Day – a huge day of harness racing with some really top liners doing battle in some key races during the day. Keep an eye out for the likes of Marcoola, Thefixer and Chase Auckland.

What are we backing Not a bad result last week. A G’s White Socks nearly grabbed the Easter Cup for us at a great each way quote running a bold second placing and we didn’t gain anything, nor did we lose anything with Final Say who was scratched from the Riccarton meeting. Here’s what is worth looking at this weekend. Harness: Laurence Hanrahan heads to Addington this afternoon with his promising pacer, Ultimate Rocker. He’s talented, but will have to live up to all his potential in a good field. With some of the opposition he’s got, there could be a nice each way price on offer so he’s well worth an each way investment. Gallops: Disclaimer – I own a share in him, so my opinion is slightly biased, but I do think Producer is a great place bet in the last race at Riccarton tomorrow. He hasn’t finished further back than sixth in his last six starts with four of those runs coming on the big track. He gets back, but generally works home well and in the right race over the long distance he’s a good chance tomorrow.

Sonny Bill Williams will miss the next six weeks at least for the Blues after he undergoes surgery tomorrow on a problematic knee. Williams hurt his right knee when providing the offload for Otere Black’s try against the Stormers at Eden Park, a problem which kept him from the win over the Waratahs last weekend. After it was decided that arthroscopy surgery was necessary in order to tidy up a cartilage issue which has been troubling the big midfielder for some time, he must now get used to a much longer break and the clock is ticking on his All Blacks ambitions this year. He will not make the All Blacks foundation day in Wellington on Monday, but no player has been called into the initial squad of 41 as a replacement. “It’s a big blow,” Blues coach Leon MacDonald said yesterday. “I feel sorry for him. It’s unfortunate, he’s obviously landed on it awkwardly and has caused some damage there. “For him to have a return-to-rugby plan will help. “We’ll miss him on the rugby field, obviously, but he’s still con-

South Africa in Yokohama in five months, MacDonald sounded cautiously optimistic. “Whatever he puts his mind to, he makes happen,” he said. “If he still wants to play later

on he’s the sort of guy you’d never write off. “This year he really wants to make the World Cup squad and be a part of that obviously, so he’s driven to recover well from this injury and get back on the field.” Williams’ absence puts more importance on Ma’a Nonu, the second-five who has gone to a new level recently as the Blues have strung four wins together in a season for the first time since 2011. “We’re lucky to have Ma’a and he’s thriving with the extra minutes and game time,” MacDonald said. Williams’ latest issue comes on top of ankle, wrist and shoulder problems over the past few years. He is a rare talent but his confrontational style in both union and league has taken its toll and the best he can probably hope for is one last hurrah. He is contracted to the Blues and New Zealand Rugby until the end of the year, and it’s difficult to see him re-committing given that injury toll and what he has achieved. Over the next seven weeks, the Blues play the Chiefs and Highlanders before having a bye. Then they play the Brumbies, Hurricanes, Chiefs again and the Crusaders.

Dan Carter loves a challenge and is ready for his next one – recovering from neck surgery. The All Black great underwent surgery after a cervical spine problem was discovered last month during a failed medical that halted his return to French club Racing 92. The 37-year-old posted a photo of himself on Twitter after his surgery assuring his fans and followers that it went well. “Another challenge to conquer! Happy my neck surgery went well and now the long road to recovery starts,” he wrote on Twitter. Carter was expected to join the Parisian club, reportedly worth up to $49,000 a month, until the deal was cancelled at the eleventh hour after failing a medical. After receiving the news last month, Carter said he was disappointed after the tough week. “I’m incredibly disappointed that I won’t be able to join Racing for the rest of their season.”

Franks again missing from Crusaders line-up Owen Franks’ stop-start Super Rugby season has hit another judder-bar. The Crusaders and All Blacks prop has been left out of the squad to play the Highlanders tonight in Christchurch due to a shoulder injury. Franks has played just once in the last month, clocking 40 minutes against the Brumbies last week. Crusaders coach Scott Robertson says Franks will go for a scan and they’ll take their time with him. “He’ll get a scan ... see how things are going with his shoulder,” said Robertson. “And the best thing for him, we just realise that we’ll take our time with our players because we’ve got the depth in the squad, something we’re really fortunate to have. “We’re rolling and trusting our squad and it’s really important that we’ve got as many bodies available by the end of the competition and by trusting the players now.” Fellow All Blacks Codie Taylor and George Bridge are also nursing minor injuries and weren’t considered, while Sam Whitelock, Bryn Hall, Jack Goodhue and Brayden Ennor return to the side. Despite missing some big names, Robertson said they were determined to pick their best team in what will be a tricky southern derby against the Highlanders. “We’ve picked the best team for this week.

“We needed to. We know how desperate the Highlanders are, the position they’re in and they’ve certainly mentioned how important this game is to them.” Meanwhile, Highlanders firstfive Josh Ioane will start his first match since their round four loss to the Hurricanes last month, taking over from the injured Marty Banks. Ashburton water skier Emily Milner secured bragging rights at the Canterbury Water Ski Regionals last weekend on Lake Crichton with a massive competition on the water. Milner, who recently returned from Australia where she competed, claimed the highest award in Canterbury Water Skiing when she took out the Champion of Champions title after wins in her age group in the slalom, trick and jump sections. A spokesperson for the Canterbury Water Ski Association, said that Milner’s success was exceptional and a huge reward for a young skier who showed commitment, toughness and perseverance. With the national championships just around the corner, the form shown by Milner puts her in good stead for a successful championships which begin next week in Auckland. Milner wasn’t the only local name to feature at the Canterbury Water Ski regionals. Courtney Donaldson was first in her age group for slalom, trick and jump while brothers, Hugh and George Donaldson featured strongly in the men’s division. Neil Donaldson also came away with trophies for efforts competing with Gavin Green – underlining a strong weekend on the water for the Ashburton District.

Then the Manchester United defender’s flailing right arm swiped across Messi’s face, and blood poured from the Barcelona forward’s nose. Already trailing against a dominating Barcelona side, United had to resort to physicality after 30 minutes to try to thwart the fivetime European champions yesterday. It helped prevent any further damage to the scoreline, as Barcelona won the first leg of their quarter-final 1-0 after United defender Luke Shaw unwittingly helped Luis Suarez’s header into the net in the 12th minute. An equaliser never looked likely, though, with United failing to register a shot on goal in a Champions League game at Old Trafford for the first time since 2005. Barcelona’s goal – initially flagged for offside before being

awarded via a video review – came during an exhilarating spell when the visitors’ possession exceeded 80 per cent. “It was a great header from Luis,” Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde said. “He was fighting for every cause. He was getting stuck into the defenders, trying to work really hard.” But as Barcelona became sloppy and error-strewn, the early passing rhythm faded. “We lost the ball in our own half a few times too often,” Barcelona defender Nelson Semedo said. “But shutting down those errors gave us this big victory.” While the Spanish champions ended a six-game winless run on the road in European knockout games stretching back to 2016, this quarter-final is very much still in play heading into the second leg on Tuesday. The next big thing in golf when he won the British Open two years ago, the 25-year-old Texan is now in one big slump. He hasn’t won since. He hasn’t finished in the top 10 in his last 15 tournaments, and even more jarring is that he has finished an average of just over 14 shots behind the winner, except for the three times he missed the cut. It would figure that if any golf course could cure whatever is ailing him, it would be Augusta National. Spieth is exuding patience, if not confidence. “My expectations are high this week. I feel great about the state of my game right now,” said Spieth.

Basketball Mid Canterbury’s men’s A grade competition has been given a makeover for the 2019 season. The new-look competition got under way for the season at the home of Basketball Mid Canterbury (BBMC) – the Oxford Street stadium – on Wednesday night, with a focus on embracing the growth in men’s basketball in Mid Canterbury. When they came up with the new plan, there were two main outcomes in the minds of Basketball Mid Canterbury (BBMC) officials. BBMC’s senior men’s basketball co-ordinator Brian Kerr said the aims were to create development pathways and exposure for the district’s younger players, and continuing development and tournament exposure for senior players playing in high level competitions. “The idea was to complement the wonderful junior programme that we have here in Ashburton and also take into account that the sport has risen in popularity, which was highlighted by the large numbers of players turning up to the (Ashburton) College basketball trials this year and last year,” Kerr said. For this year’s men’s A grade competition games would go back to full length – four 10 minute quarters – and have official referees. Five teams would take part in the competition and Kerr predicted they would be evenly matched. The teams are College A, Newlands-Gannets, Checkers-MSA Team Donkey, Star-Farmers Corner and Nomads. Kerr said a team had also been entered in to the men’s division one competition which would get under way on April 28. Opening night on Wednesday night saw two outstanding matches between two evenly matched sides. The Ashburton College Boys took on the experience of the Checkers MSA team, otherwise

Fotu Hala was one of the standouts for the College side but early fouls kept him off the court for a lot longer than the side would have liked. Quinn Ritchie top-scored with 19 points while Sam Pearce chipped in with a solid 12 point effort including two from beyond the three-point line. The second match of the night started in a scratchy fashion with

both Nomads and Star making lots of mistakes and offering up plenty of turnovers. Nomads emerged at the end of the first quarter with a one-point lead 14-13. In a polar opposite of the first quarter the second was played at a frenetic tempo and intensity. Nomads really found their stride and were able to head into the break up 43-34. They again kept the pressure on in the third while Star had few answers and it looked set to be a one-sided affair with Nomads up by 17 going into the final quarter 72-55. Star stuck to their guns during the final stages of the game though and worked their way back into the match with Marvin

Nomads had little answer for the onslaught but managed to have their noses in front and looked home up by one point with nine seconds to play. Middleton said the Bucks are more confident entering the playoffs than they have been in the past. Dearly loved and adored husband of Elaine for 67 years, much loved father and father-in-law of Marie and John, Pauline, Michael and Margaret, Gerard and Claire and treasured Grandad of Daniel, Mark, Bridget and Ian, Katrina and Andrew, Josh and Samantha, Hannah, James and Livvie, Terry and Candace, Corey and Max, Josh and Courtenay. Mid Canterbury will have one less team making regular trips to Timaru to play in the Mid/South Canterbury senior hockey competitions this season. But the withdrawal of Hampstead/Collegians from the senior women’s competition isn’t necessarily a bad thing for hockey in the region, Mid Canterbury Hockey president James Tavendale said. Hampstead/Collegians have found wins hard to come by in the Mid/South competition in recent seasons, but just because they’ve decided not to play in that competition this season it

doesn’t mean they won’t feature on the turf at all. They will still exist as a team, but have filtered back into the Mid Canterbury first grade women’s competition instead, and Tavendale said that will be an extremely competitive grade. This year’s first grade women’s competition features seven teams, while Mid Canterbury’s first grade men’s competition features six teams. Two Mid Canterbury teams are left playing in the Mid/South Canterbury senior competition – Hampstead for the women and Wakanui for the men – and both are traditional contenders. Both came out on top in their

round robins last year, with Wakanui winning the prestigious McCosker Trophy but then falling short when teams played off for the Walker and Hall Shield to finish the season off. Hampstead also finished what was otherwise a top season, with a loss in their final outing of the season. No Hampstead/Collegians in the mix this season means there will be a bye in the women’s competition this year, but Hampstead will be in action when play gets under way tomorrow, playing the Craighead 1st XI in Timaru. There’s five teams in the Mid/ South Canterbury senior men’s

competition this year too, and Wakanui are at home for their first outing of the season tomorrow against Northern Hearts. In the Mid/South Canterbury women’s division two competition, a new team formed last year that was a combination of players from Ashburton College and Mount Hutt College – Opuke-Hakatere – is back for anther season, and they’ll play Cambridge at home in their first game on Sunday. Mid Canterbury also has three teams in the Mid/South boys’ division three competition – two from Wakanui and an Allenton/ Methven side – and they’ll kick off their season on April 29.

Ashburton College’s boys’ 1st and 2nd XIs are both playing in Christchurch competitions this year, and Ashburton’s hockey turf will host a tournament – as they now do most years – during the secondary schools’ winter tournament week later in the season. The Ashburton turf will also host the Finch Rosebowl senior women’s tournament at Queen’s Birthday weekend. With Mid Canterbury’s junior competitions also bursting at the seams, Tavendale said it’s shaping up to be a big hockey season. “Overall our hockey numbers are still going really well, we are probably around capacity for our turf,” Tavendale said.
