Ashburton’s RSA says it will be business as usual this Anzac Day, despite concerns in other parts of the country about security following the Christchurch mosque attacks. Police have said they will have a visible presence nationwide for safety and reassurance. Ashburton RSA president Merv
Brenton said the returned services’ association would hold its usual dawn, cemetery and civic services in Ashburton on Anzac Day. He said the association had spoken with police and would be guided by them if circumstances changed, but there was no reason to cancel or consolidate Mid Canterbury services. Methven will also hold its annual Anzac Day celebration, and
services are also being organised at the Hakatere Marae, Hinds, Mayfield and Rakaia. Brenton said he had been in consultation with police. “They will get back to me if there are any major changes. I believe that the services should go ahead or else our warriors years ago wasted their time going overseas to have the country we have now got.”
He said it was a great chance for Kiwis of all backgrounds to show their current unity and pay homage to the country’s past by attending Anzac Day services. “All the people who have lost their lives in wars have done it to give us a better place to live in. We can come together on Anzac Day and be united.” The RSA will plant a cluster of white crosses near the cenotaph
in Baring Square West as a symbol of lives that had been lost over the years. Brenton hoped that young people would continue to show their support on the day itself as it was an important part of their history.

Methven is growing into a wellness destination ahead of the hot pools project coming to town. Yesterday, The Salt House opened in The Mall featuring a halotherapy salt clinic. Operator Cherie Summers-Wight said she was excited to see bookings coming in. The natural therapist had already been operating treatments including Emmett Technique and Bowen Therapy from her Methven home base. She was now offering these at the new site, alongside the salt clinic. The clinic is a small room with lowering lighting and ambient music, featuring a salt-covered floor with various types of seating, resembling a white-sand beach. Clients undergoing a salt clinic session rest while a dry salt aerosol emits through the air from a medically-approved halo-med device. The salt used in the machine is crushed finely so that it is inhalable, and thus goes into the lower respiratory system, attaching itself to allergens such as pollens and dust so helping to remove them. It is also considered good for skin conditions due to antibacterial properties. Summers-Wight said the therapy harked back to the 1800s, having had its origins from a phenomenon noticed in Poland of miners in salt caves having less respiratory and skin conditions. She expected winter would become even busier. “People will often seek halotherapy for colds and flus, to treat these symptoms before they get out of control,” she said. Summers-Wight is originally from Rotorua, but settled across
the Tasman with Aussie husband Peter. In 2016 the couple decided to swap the stifling heat of Northern Queensland for the pristine beauty of the South Island. They planned to buy a house in Queenstown, but on their way there stopped in Methven and fell in love with the little ski and farming town. “We just love the community feel,” Summers-Wight said. Meanwhile, up the road another new wellness business, Flow Pool and Studio, is booming after opening in February. Located on Barkers Road near the Methven Walkway on the outskirts of town, Flow is averaging 240 clients per week at classes such as yoga, pilates and aquacise. Facilities include a 14-metre long hydrotherapy pool and a float cabin. The latter has a dense magnesium sulphate solution providing a weightless experience akin to floating in the Dead Sea. Owner-operator Melanie Pedler said the centre employs about eight health and wellbeing therapists while a physiotherapist leases a space on-site. Pedler and husband Andrew Davidson have lived in Methven for about 13 years and have three children aged 14, 12 and nine. They had some time away in Australia, where Pedler gained experience working at a special school with hydrotherapy facilities. Pedler is trained in health physical education and the outdoor education industry, and has almost finished her Masters in special education with a focus on the private sector. She and Davidson had planned to install a swimming pool at their Methven home, and it had made sense to extend this project and open Flow, she said. “I just saw so many positive

The opening of the two businesses complements a range of therapies offered in Methven, such as reiki, acupuncture, and hot stone massage, and precedes the Opuke Thermal Pools and Spa project. The Government’s Provincial Growth Fund has loaned $7.5 million to the hot pools project, which has a planned opening date of winter next year.

Facelift for town’s skatepark Local skaters will be picking up new tricks and flips at the Ashburton skatepark this Saturday when New Zealand’s longest running learn-to-skate programme provider, Cheapskates Skate Skool, are in town to help launch the park’s new street art. Renowned Christchurch artist, Wongi Wilson is in Ashburton this week creating the new artwork, which will be unveiled at the Ashburton Skate Jam event on Saturday. His design for the popular West Street skatepark is inspired by young people in the Ashburton community, who were invited to submit their ideas for the work at the Ashburton Art Gallery in February. The event is an initiative of Ashburton District Council and Safer Ashburton, with the primer paint kindly donated by Resene ColourShop Ashburton. Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel said the new artwork will give the skatepark a fresh look with a uniquely Ashburton District touch. “The skatepark is a great space for young people and families to hang out and keep active,” she said. “It’s fantastic to see so many people making use of it on the weekends and after school, and we want to make sure it continues to be a place that everyone can feel proud of. “As a public space that’s targeted at our young people, it’s fitting that the new artwork will feature their ideas about what the district means to them. “It’s something they’ll be able to a feel part of and take pride in.” The Ashburton Skate Jam is a

featured on a number of buildings in central Christchurch. Wilson also worked on the previous facelift of the skatepark 10 years ago. The Ashburton Skate Jam will be happening from noon-4pm on Saturday at the Ashburton skatepark, on the corner of West and Moore Streets.

Anzac Day to be held as per usual
From P1 There will be a dawn service at 6.30am at the cenotaph, with Ashburton District Mayor Donna Favel as guest speaker. Labour MP Jo Luxton will speak at the Ashburton cemetery at 9am and Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon will speak at the civic service at the cenotaph at 11am. Ashburton College head students will also speak at the civic service. There will also be events at the RSA throughout the day, including a chance for people to have a cuppa between services. Brenton is expecting a full house at the establishment later in the day. Viv Barrett has organised Methven’s Anzac Day service for years and said it would continue as usual on April 25. About 600 people were expected to march in the town’s parade and they would gather at the memorial archway at 9.15am and march to the centennial hall for a 10am service. While there were no longer any surviving World War One veterans, Methven did have a World War Two veteran, he said. In Auckland, police have asked organisers of Anzac Day commemorations to consider consolidating the number of events in the interests of safety. The RSA’s national administration has said it is up to communities to decide. RSA’s chief executive, Jack Steer, said police concerns were from a security perspective for people but there was no direct threat to any specific service.

Driver refused breath, blood tests A man stopped in the drop-off zone at EA Networks Centre after public concerns about his driving refused to be tested for alcohol, the Ashburton District Court was told yesterday. Annanias Mushonga, 48, had to be pepper-sprayed when he wouldn’t get out of the vehicle. Mushonga yesterday admitted charges of refusing to accompany and refusing to permit a blood specimen arising from the incident on May 31 last year. Police withdrew a third charge of resisting police. He had pleaded not guilty, but changed his pleas before a scheduled hearing this week. Judge Kevin Phillips fined him $800 and disqualified him from driving for nine months. He must also pay court costs of $130. Police prosecutor Grant Neal said police were alerted about the labourer’s bad driving on River Terrace by a member of the public about 8.15pm. He was located in the sport centre’s drop-off zone where he failed to take a breath screening test as instructed by officers. “He refused to get out of the vehicle and was arrested. He struggled against police when an attempt was made to remove him,” the sergeant said.
Mushonga was pepper sprayed and removed. He refused to give an evidential breath test and refused to allow a sample of his blood to be taken for alcohol analysis. He claimed he had done everything police had asked him to do. Judge Phillips disagreed and said the summary of facts suggested Mushonga had been unco-operative from the outset. He had been reported for bad driving, then refused to get out
and did not comply with directions to take the breath screening test, the judge said. Mushonga’s lawyer Douglas Brown said his client had only consumed two beers before driving that night but Judge Phillips said he drew inferences from the facts about his alcohol level. “I consider the attitude you displayed, following your bad driving – enough to have a member of the public report it – means that your level at the time was a high one and I don’t accept
you had two alcoholic drinks. I believe it would be above a moderate level.”

Others to appear in the Ashburton District Court this week included: Joshua William Hurst, 20, a labourer, was sentenced to three months community detention and 100 hours community work on charges of burglary, careless use and making a false statement to police. He had gone with an associate to a farm, where the pair intended to steal petrol for their vehicle – they intended to drive to Fairlie for drugs. When they realised the farm bowser contained diesel, they stole a truck and trailer and drove off. Hurst got out at the farm gate and drove their own vehicle behind the stolen truck. Both vehicles ended up in a water race. The pair asked a local farmer for help and he ran them home, where Hurst then reported his vehicle stolen. Judge Kevin Phillips said Hurst and his associate were no doubt affected by drugs when they committed the crime but it appeared he had cleaned up his life. Hurst still needed to be accountable for the burglary though and others
Royce Cole Tyler Morgans, 20, a labourer, was sentenced to four months’ community detention on several charges, including threatening to kill his father and theft. He was also sentenced to 12 months’ intensive supervision and ordered to make reparation of $1500. The charges arose after a family argument, in which Morgans threatened to “cave” his father’s head in with a garden spade. Luke Joshua Roulston admitted charges of intentionally damaging a window, using threatening language and unlawful possession of ammunition. The charges arose from an incident last October when he was asked to leave the victim’s home. He responded by becoming aggressive and hitting a table with a mop. He later broke a bedroom window and while the victim was trying to administer first aid, Roulston said he had come back to shoot her. He was remanded to June 17 for sentence.

Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon admits to being disappointed at negative comments on social media regarding the upcoming open day at the Ashburton Masjid. He is wanting to drum up as much support for the open day as possible, saying learning about the Muslim culture will help ensure events such as the Christchurch terror attack never happen again. The Ashburton Muslim com-
munity is reaching out to Mid Cantabrians to show their appreciation of the support they have received following the attack, so are holding the open day this coming Sunday. Falloon has helped members organise the event and has raised funds for a garden planting to be undertaken on the day. On his Andrew Falloon MP for Rangitata Facebook page, Falloon posted a flyer on April 4 about the event. The post has since received 156 comments, and 154 reactions.

The vast majority of reactions are likes and love-hearts, but 15 are angry faces. And as is the case with many Facebook posts, negative commenters sparked up debate. One woman wrote “How about we emphasise native culture in NZ … now we are drowning in all other cultures around the world”. Falloon said while the small amount of negative reaction was disappointing, he was keen to ensure it did not detract from what would be “a really positive event”. “I support freedom of speech but don’t condone hate speech. Hearing NZ conference for Ashburton The biennial conference of Hearing New Zealand will next month be hosted here in Ashburton. The event, which will see members from around the country travelling into the district is to be held from Thursday, May 9 through to and including Saturday, May 11 and runs in two parts. Throughout Thursday and until mid-afternoon frontline personnel – those who deal directly with those with hearing impairment will meet and take the opportunity to network and upskill with guidance from a motivational coach. The second part of the conference which will be attended by delegates from around the country will commence on Friday afternoon with an official opening and a keynote presentation by Gael Hannan; a Canadian actress, blogger and author on hearing loss and hearing issues. Hannan comes with an international reputation not just for her message but the ways in which she illuminates it. The Ashburton Hearing Association is putting the call out and inviting members of the public to attend the opening ceremony at the Seniors Centre and listen to Hannan’s address. Later that evening those attending the conference will meet for a conference dinner, entertainment and awards presentations.

Auckland Regional Public Health Service (ARPHS) has been notified of three new measles cases, taking the number of confirmed cases in Auckland for this year to 15. Medical Officer of Health Dr William Rainger says the new cases are in isolation and ARPHS is following up with contacts in family, household, education, healthcare and social settings to prevent spread of the disease. “At this stage, we believe the new cases are linked to other preexisting cases.”
Charges dropped after hearing Charges of theft, disorderly behaviour and threatening to injure against Simon David McKenzie were dropped after an unusual hearing in the Ashburton District Court yesterday. McKenzie, 38, had pleaded not guilty and police brought two local bar owners to court as witnesses to his behaviour. Since charges were laid after events in June last year, McKenzie has consistently told the court
that he is God and cannot be prosecuted. Kelly’s Bar owner Belinda Fine said McKenzie walked off with one of their pint glasses after becoming aggressive at the bar when they were closing up. Arcadia nightclub owner Paul Millichamp said McKenzie came drunk to his bar, threatened to kill him and set fire to the building. McKenzie said he believed he

had left Kelly’s with a glass he had brought there and denied making the threats at Acadia. He said he had asked police to provide CCTV footage of the incident. Police constable Jamie Townsend said it was likely footage of the incident had been written over by the time he was told to inquire about it. Judge Kevin Phillips noted McKenzie had mentioned access to the footage at two previous ap-
pearances though there was no court order for police to produce it. The investigation process had not been good enough in that regard, he said. He also said that for the theft of a pint glass to be proven, McKenzie had to have guilty knowledge he was walking away with it – he did not and said he believed it was a glass he brought to the pub. McKenzie said he had been out that night celebrating the dis-
missal of other criminal charges. Giving evidence yesterday, he said those charges had been thrown out on the grounds that he was God. He had gone to the Ashburton bar with his own glass and a Bible. He left there for the nightclub where he denied the altercation and allegations he was throwing punches before being pinned to the ground by a security guard.

Open day draws hundreds Around 550 members of the public from areas including Ashburton, Christchurch, Kirwee and Hororata came along to Fonterra’s Darfield site open day on Saturday. People were queuing at the gates early, eager to get the rare chance to look behind the
scenes of the world’s joint-largest milk dryer, a distribution centre the size of seven rugby fields and the new cream cheese plant. GM operations Darfield and Upper South Island Harriet Van Genne-Knape said it was great to see such a turn out.
“It was a little wet and cold but that didn’t seem to deter anyone. From the very young, to the group from an Ashburton retirement home, there was something of interest to everyone. “The kids loved getting into the tankers and I hear our auto-
mated forklifts and freshly made cream cheese were also a hit.” The site open gates event was one of three held around the country on Saturday, with the co-operative’s Te Rapa and Edendale sites also hosting visitors and lifting the lid on dairy production.

A man was seriously injured following an alleged attack at Paremoremo Prison on Monday afternoon. Emergency services were called to the Auckland prison just after 3pm yesterday after a male, aged in his 20’s, had been stabbed. Prison director Andy Langley confirmed a prisoner was taken to hospital after an alleged assault. “The area in which the assault took place is secured as a crime scene and police have been informed,” he said. “Corrections will also carry out a full investigation into the incident, and will ensure all evidence is provided to police.” Langley said they have a zero tolerance for violence policy. “Any violence or assaults against other prisoners or staff is not tolerated. Any prisoner using such behaviour will be held to account for their actions, including facing criminal charges.” He said staff are constantly working to ensure the prison provides the safest environment possible for staff and prisoners.

Thirteen in hospital

Thirteen victims of the Christchurch terror attack remain in hospital, with one person still fighting for their life in intensive care. It’s been 26 days since a heavily armed gunman stormed into the Al Noor and Linwood mosques in Christchurch during Friday prayer and killed 50 Muslim worshippers. Canterbury District Health Board confirmed yesterday that 13 people are still in hospital. All are in a stable condition except for one person who is in Christchurch Hospital’s ICU in a critical condition. A 5-year-old girl who was transported to Starship Children’s Hospital in Auckland is in a stable condition, as is her wounded father, who is nearby at Auckland City Hospital. The alleged gunman, a 28-year-old Australian man, faces 50 murder charges and 39 attempted murder charges. Police have said other charges are still under consideration. On Friday at the High Court in Christchurch, Justice Cameron Mander ordered mental health
A Christchurch schoolboy yesterday denied distributing objectionable material from the mosque terror attacks. The teenager, who for legal reasons cannot be named, entered the denial plea in the Youth Court in Christchurch yesterday. He was refused electronically monitored bail last week by Judge Stephen O’Driscoll. The boy’s lawyer, Moana Cole, has appealed the decision and the case will be heard at the High Court in Christchurch today. Yesterday, the teen was remanded in the custody of Oranga Tamariki to come back to Youth Court on May 21 for a status hearing. The Herald understands police were alerted after concerns about his behaviour. The boy’s school cannot be named and his principal declined to comment, referring inquiries to police. Police also refused to comment. There have been other unrelated cases before the courts since the Christchurch terror attacks. Christchurch businessman Philip Neville Arps, 44, appeared in court last month on charges of

The judge stressed that the move was “normal procedure” and an “entirely ordinary and regular step” to be taken at this stage of the judicial process. order – which was not opposed by the accused’s new defence lawyers Shane Tait and Jonathan Hudson – on the grounds of undue hardship. Charging documents lodged with the court only refer to the 39 attempted murder victims by alphabetical-numerical numbers, starting with “W001” and ending with “W039”. The accused has been remanded in custody and is due to reappear in court on June 14.

The alleged offending occurred on March 16, the day after the shootings at two Christchurch mosques, in which 50 people died and dozens were injured. The Chief Censor’s office has classified the shooter’s livestream and so-called manifesto as objectionable under the Films, Video and Publications Classifications Act. The charges have a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison and apply from the moment the material was released, not the point it was banned by the Chief Censor. Arps was declined bail and remanded in custody until his next appearance on April 15. An 18-year-old Christchurch student, who has interim name suppression, has also been charged with distributing a livestream and of showing a photograph of the Deans Ave mosque where 42 Muslims were shot dead with the message “target acquired” and further online messaging allegedly inciting extreme violence.

Have your say, but do it with dignity A
s someone who uses social media, in particular Facebook, quite frequently, it never ceases to amaze me when it comes to the behaviour of some individuals. There is a certain sense of self-righteousness that some people tend to take when it comes to commenting on matters of public opinion and it’s often that theirs is the most important and there’s no chance of anyone being able to engage in a good healthy debate. I’ll admit to feeling a little sorry for our MP Andrew Falloon this week, and am certain he would have been surprised at the reaction to what many viewed as a positive post about the Ashburton Masjid opening its doors to
the public this weekend. Thankfully, most people saw the post for what it was – an information sharing service in which the invitation was being extended to those within the community to go and spend some time at the mosque and learn more about the beliefs and rituals followed by those who worship and pray there. Instead, Andrew had to deal with some vitriol from some
corners who suggested he was ignoring other parts of society, and that some reacted to the post with anger would suggest that, despite some of the massive inroads made toward a little more equality in our society in the wake of the Christchurch shootings, there is still some way to go. Andrew’s experiences earlier in the week are not isolated and there are countless examples around poor use of social media that you can witness any day of the week. Spend some time reading comments on any news article shared on social media and you’ll quickly grasp that some people’s way of interacting is a path of allout attack and bitterness towards anyone who might not quite see
things the way they do. Our own Facebook page here at the Guardian is heavily monitored because of some of the subjects we often have to deal with and some of the comments that remain unseen by the public are enough to make you wonder exactly what goes through some people’s minds at times. It’s not really something you can eliminate either. Yes, there is the block button, but there is also the element of allowing someone to have their opinion that you have to consider. If we were to refrain from allowing everyone who had something a little bit different to say all the time, then there wouldn’t be much engagement.
So, we take the approach of, if we feel something is insensitive, rude or well off the mark, then we will moderate it – and it happens a lot more than you’d think. Social media has a lot of benefits – it’s immediacy and ability to share far and wide information of importance is fantastic. But there is a dark side which sees keyboard warriors wading into matters of public conversation passing inappropriate comments without any real retribution. Time will eventually catch up with those people and slowly but surely their opinions will become less and less read, but as quick as some go, others arrive. And it’s something society could do well to try to remove all together.

o some extent, the immediate dust is settling. On March 15, a deranged but sinisterly-committed-to-murder, Australian, domiciled unobtrusively in Dunedin, for some months two years ago, shot dead 50 Muslims at prayer in two mosques in Christchurch. To this atrocity the Muslim community has displayed astonishing powers of forgiveness and love while also showing signs of seeking retaliatory revenge. Now much-quoted, Farid Ahmed, said at the gathering on National Remembrance Day in Christchurch on March 29, “I don’t want to have a heart that is boiling like a volcano. A volcano has anger, fury and rage; it doesn’t have peace, it has hatred. I don’t want to have a heart like that and I believe no one does ... that is why I have chosen peace, I have chosen love and I have forgiven”. A stunned silence followed as the crowds digested the depth and compassion of Ahmed’s words before, as one, they launched into a standing ovation. It was, indeed, a moment to remember. Not long after the initial horror, PM Jacinda Ardern was on the move, impressing all with her safe hands and ability to bring kindness and understanding to the families of those killed, as well as the injured, so quickly transferred to
that but, even so, given only a parliamentary day’s discussion our MPs are unlikely to remove so-far undetected fish hooks and other, under the radar, blemishes, which may bring much angst in the days ahead. However, despite the reservations, Jacinda can hardly be accused of fiddling while Rome burned. Meanwhile, and predictably, less-principled parliamentarians are making political capital out of the slaughter of the Ides of March, namely, the two Greens, Golriz Ghahraman and Marama Davidson, in particular. The former accuses some of her fellow, but unnamed, colleagues in the House, of endemic hate speech, while the latter, at a vigil – yes, a vigil – for the victims of the mosque massacres, embarked on an uninhibited rant to the effect: “this land we are standing on is land we were violently removed from to uphold the same agenda that killed the people in the mosques yesterday”. Even the illustrious Dame Anne Salmond has had her ten cents worth: “White Supremacy is part of us”, she opined. Which brings me, finally, to hate and free, speech. They are becoming indistinguishable, the one from the other. One man’s (and, of course, woman’s) hate is another’s free. To risk saying anything that

So far so good but ... when the PM told us firmly that, “there is one thing I can assure you, the gun laws of this country will be changed” at that moment the situation changed down a gear, though we may not have realised it at the time. The trouble was what Jacinda’s said amounted to a hasty utterance, and, at once, it introduced a political element into the proceedings, one that was bound to lead to controversy and cries of knee-jerk reaction, something history has proved to be a dangerous thing. The fact is that, even for all the right reasons, as the public may perceive them to be, in the face of such carnage, law on the hoof and in a hurry often turns out to be bad law which fails to achieve the noble ideals for which it was originally introduced. Only a day was to be put aside for debate in Parliament when the norm for such proposed and complex legislation would be more like six months. In its present mood the public would certainly not stand for

Social media goes code-red at the slightest perceived slur on anyone or anything, so persons courageous enough to make what they regard as a significant point about a current issue better have ready a comprehensive list of explanations when Twitter, Facebook et al light up, as they invariably do. Some unoriginal examples: “I was misquoted”, “l was taken out of context”, “my words have been systematically distorted”, “I was hacked by the KGB”. Above all, when you have tested the waters and found them rough and inhospitable, bail out as soon as you can and settle for discussing the weather prospects for the next three days. To revert to that old wartime exhortation – be like dad and keep mum, (at least until the self-righteous tumult dies down). The social media ghouls will have found several new victims to eviscerate by then, all of them guilty of heinous speech, of one kind or the other. Israelis head to ballot box aap
Israelis are set to vote in an election that could hand conservative Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a record fifth term or see him dethroned by an ex-general who has pledged clean government and social cohesion. Dubbed “King Bibi” by both Time and Economist magazines, Netanyahu has rallied a rightist camp hardened against Palestinians and played up Israeli foreign policy boons that are the fruit of his Trump administration ties. But the 69-year-old Likud party leader’s hope of overtaking Israel’s founding father, David Ben-Gurion, as longest-serving premier in July has been dented by a looming graft indictment. He denies any wrongdoing. Critics warn of “Bibi fatigue” and argue that the parliamentary election should bring fresh faces to high office. Stalking Netanyahu in the opinion polls has been Benny Gantz, a former chief of the armed forces and centrist political novice. Buttressed by two other former generals at the top of his Blue and White party, Gantz has sought to push back against Netanyahu’s self-styled image as Israeli protector. With little policy daylight separating the two candidates on Iran and the Palestinians, or on Israel’s humming economy, much of the voting will by guided by the question of their character.

Netanyahu casts himself as the victim of media bias and judicial overreach. Gantz casts himself as a salve for Israel’s religiously and ethnically riven society and its relations with liberal Jews abroad. “This election is about one thing — whether or not Netanyahu should remain in office. It’s the only thing that really de-
fines 12 out of the 13 parties which will be in the next Knesset,” said Anshel Pfeffer, author of the biography “Bibi: The Turbulent Life and Times of Benjamin Netanyahu”. No party has ever won an outright majority in the 120-seat parliament, meaning days or even weeks of coalition negotiations will lie ahead. Israel’s president, Reuven Rivlin, will consult with the leaders of every party represented in the Knesset and choose whoever he believes has the best chance of forming a government.

UK law forces May to consult on EU aap
Britain’s parliament has approved legislation giving lawmakers the power to scrutinise and even change Prime Minister Theresa May’s request the European Union agree to delay Brexit until June 30. The bill, which has received its final rubber stamp approval from Queen Elizabeth, gives MPs the chance to make legally binding changes to May’s requested departure date during a debate scheduled for today. Britain’s House of Lords had earlier approved the legislation. May has already asked Brussels to extend Britain’s EU membership until June 30 to allow talks with the Labour Party in
search of a different exit plan. It is a last-ditch attempt to keep control after parliament rejected May’s own Brexit deal three times. But MPs want additional legal guarantees against a “no-deal” exit happening on April 12 – the current exit day. “Both houses of parliament have strongly made clear their view that a no deal would be deeply damaging to jobs, manufacturing and security of our country,” Labour MP Yvette Cooper, who helped propose the legislation, said. The bill passed through the Commons by a single vote last week and was then approved with minor changes in the House of Lords, an unelected body whose role is to refine and scrutinise legislation.
The passage of the bill represents a significant blow to May’s authority, overturning the long-standing convention the government has sole control of the agenda in parliament, allowing it to control what laws are passed. May is due to travel to Paris and Berlin on today to press her request for a short delay, before it is formally discussed by EU leaders on later this week. The decision can be vetoed by any of the other 27 member states. If Britain’s exit is delayed beyond May 22, the EU has said it will have to take part in European Parliament elections. The British government on Monday took the legal steps necessary to take part in that vote.
Whoopi Goldberg was back in the hospital last week after coming down with an illness. The hospitalisation came not long after Whoopi nearly died from pneumonia and sepsis. “I am here. I’m much better. I’m much, much better,” she said on an episode of The View. Whoopi’s health has been of grave concern as of late. The comedy legend was away from the morning show she helms for over a month while she battled illness. On March 14, she surprised her fellow co-hosts in returning during the middle of the show. Whoopi detailed how her health issues were very dire at one point.
Married at First Sight The behaviour exhibited on this year’s season of Married at First Sight Australia was so shocking that a Channel 9 boss has declared changes will be made to the show. According to news.com.au, Channel 9‘s head of content, production and development, Adrian Swift, was stunned by what he saw on the show. Last month, the show’s executive producer John Walsh said he wanted “less cheating and drama” for the show’s return in 2020. This year’s season has featured affairs, fights, and one husband calling his wife the c-word. Over 25,000 people have signed a petition asking for the show to be taken off air.

Eggboy avoids criminal conviction aap
A teenager who cracked an egg on Senator Fraser Anning’s head last month has avoided criminal charges over the incident. Police yesterday confirmed 17-year-old Will Connolly had received an official caution. Senator Anning, 69, has also avoided charges for subsequently striking the boy. “On assessment of all the circumstances, the 69-year-old’s actions were treated as self-defence and there was no reasonable prospect of conviction," police said in a statement. The incident followed remarks from the senator blaming Muslim migrants for

Detectives are still hoping to identify a young man seen kicking Connolly while he was being held to the ground by others during the Moorabbin scuffle on March 16.
Emilia Clarke ‘wanted to die’ Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke says she “wanted to die” when she was hospitalised due to two brain aneurysms. Clarke, who plays Daenerys Targaryen in the HBO series, shared images from the ordeal during an interview on the US chat show Sunday Morning. The 32-yearold actress suffered the aneurysms in 2011 at the age of 24, the same year Game of Thrones began. Clarke told Smith that in the second aneurysm, a part of her brain “died”. Clarke says at her lowest moments, she was ready to let go. “In my worst moments, I wanted to pull the plug. I asked the medical staff to let me die.” The actress says she feared she would never act again, which is her “reason for living”.

Payroll software provider PaySauce says its recurring revenue more than doubled in the March quarter and its customer numbers jumped 86 per cent from a year earlier. “By migrating our entire customer base to Inland Revenue’s new Payday Filing system in the fourth quarter of 2018, well ahead of the April deadline, we were free to focus on product and partnerships,” co-founder and chief executive Asantha Wijeyeratne said. The company kicked off its strategic partnership in earnest with key industry body Dairy Women’s Network with a series of educational workshops delivered in col-
laboration with DairyNZ. “We hosted 11 events spanning from Gore in the deep south to Taipa in the far north attended by hundreds of our target customers. These were held in the lead-up to major payroll compliance changes under Payday Filing, giving us an opportunity to address real and pressing concerns for attendees,” Wijeyeratne said. PaySauce, which targets small to medium-sized businesses, says total recurring revenue rose to $240,000 from $117,000 in the same quarter last year. Customer numbers rose to 1384 from 746 and the number of employees covered climbed to 7237 from 3729. PaySauce listed on NZX on December 21 via a backdoor listing
through the shell of Energy Mad, which then had a market capitalisation of $128.6 million, based on the last trade in Energy Mad shares at 2.2 cents. PaySauce shares last traded yesterday at 1.1 cents, valuing the company at $64.3 million. PaySauce provides cloud-based software-as-a-service. It has specialised in services to farming and other primary industries and formed a partnership in December with the 10,000-member Dairy Women’s Network to deliver payroll and compliance services. Among its services, it provides payday advances that cost employers nothing but allow workers to bypass payday lenders by drawing down their own salary.
‘Drop Google tax plan’ – accounting body NZME New Zealand should drop its plan to try and tax borderless digital economy firms and focus instead on a “very damaging threat” from global proposals to change how exporters’ income is taxed internationally. John Cuthbertson, of Chartered Accountants of Australia New Zealand, says the country needs to be careful that the “tokenism” of the proposed unilateral digital economy levy doesn’t end up costing a lot more than it will ever bring in. In February, Revenue and Finance Ministers Stuart Nash and Grant Robertson announced their intention to impose a digital services tax that could collect between $30 million and $70m a year, depending on its design. But Cuthbertson, the New Zealand tax and financial services leader for peak accounting body,
said Ireland and Germany were now backing off earlier proposals to impose such a tax because of wider changes emerging in the OECD work. A January policy note from the OECD’s tax avoidance project, known as BEPS, says the proposals it is now assessing “may reach into fundamental aspects of the current international tax architecture” by changing the presumption that profits earned by a company should, generally, be taxed in their home country. The proposed digital services tax could turn out to be “a Trojan horse for countries like New Zealand”, Cuthbertson said, exposing the local tax base to claims from other countries that tax should be paid there rather than in New Zealand; “Under the US proposal, currently favoured at the OECD, part of the tax revenue paid by exporters, such
as Fonterra and Zespri, is at risk of migrating offshore,” he said. While the BEPS process had been glacial it had “morphed” quickly into a bigger global conversation about the impact of digitisation on all economic activity across borders, not just tech company activity. The January OECD note says the proposals “go beyond the limitations on taxing rights determined by reference to a physical presence generally accepted as another cornerstone of the current rules”. Concepts such as “significant economic presence” in a market were being examined to replace the long-standing rules requiring tax to be paid where a firm was judged to have a “permanent establishment” in a country. A discussion document is due on the New Zealand digital tax proposal next month.

Rocket Lab has taken its next leap announcing yesterday it will offer an in-house satellite platform that can be launched from its Electron vehicle. The Photon space ship could treble the New Zealand-founded company’s revenue and take it closer to a stock market listing. Morgan Stanley has picked Rocket Lab, which it says is cashflow positive, as a winner in the small-rocket race to space. Rocket Lab founder Peter Beck said the satellite platform, known as a “bus’’ could be an even bigger disruptor to the space industry than the Electron, a small, comparatively inexpensive way of getting equipment into low-Earth orbit. The Photon was designed to be an integrated part of Rocket Lab missions from the start of the Electron programme. “Small satellite operators want to focus on providing data or services from space, but building satellite hardware is a significant barrier to achieving this,’’ he said. The time, resources and expertise required to build hardware could draw small satellite opera-

Beck said interest in Rocket Lab was growing as people realised other paper rocket companies weren’t going to fly. “We’re starting to see some consolidation in the rocket industry – people are realising this game is not an easy one.’’ Asked whether there were plans to go public Beck said he wanted to make sure the company was on the right trajectory first. We have no timeline on any of that. There are certain things we want to achieve and Photon as part of that allows us to triple the size of the business. We’ll do that and who knows where it goes from there. He said the company was already cashflow positive. “We’ve ended up doing very well.”
Rocket Lab would launch a trial Photon craft in the last quarter of this year. “We’ll demonstrate a high-end version of Photon that you can get your laptop to dial in and get to it to take photos.’’ Customer missions on Photon are planned for next year and Beck said there had already been inquiries about it. The firm will in the meantime continue with its traditional launches where a customer provides the entire satellite. The next launch at Mahia Peninsula scheduled for later this month will be for the US Air Force of a 180kg load including a cubesat to test out miniaturised avionics, another to help evaluate efforts to track space junk. The last launch was for a Pentagon research agency, Darpa (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency). Asked whether Rocket Lab had stepped up security in line with the country’s heightened threat level, Beck said there hadn’t been any change. “We’ve always run extremely high-security levels – it’s the nature of the technology.’’ Rocket Lab has been identified

School holiday baking The school holidays are looming and what better time to tackle some home baking, especially if you have keen young cooks around the house. Fortunately cake and biscuit making is not a difficult skill to learn. The key is to follow the recipe, ensure your measurements are accurate and leave nothing to guess work. Dried fruit slice
200g butter, softened 1/2 caster sugar 1t vanilla essence 1 1/4 C plain flour 1/4 C cocoa 1 1/2 C cornflakes, lightly crushed Icing: 1 1/2 C icing sugar 1T cocoa 1T butter (softened) 1-2T boiling water
Oat and chocolate biscuits 250g butter 3T condensed milk 3/4 C raw sugar 1 1/2 C flour 1 1/2 C rolled oats 1t baking powder 200g dark chocolate, roughly chopped ■■ Beat butter, condensed milk and sugar together until light and creamy. ■■ Add flour, rolled oats, baking powder and chocolate chunks. ■■ Flatten spoonfuls onto a well greased oven tray. ■■ Cook for 15 - 20 minutes in a medium oven, 160°C, until golden brown. ■■ Cool on a wire rack and store in an airtight container.
Banana bread 125g butter 1/2 C soft brown sugar 1/2 C caster sugar 2 eggs 2C flour 1t baking powder 1t ground cinnamon 1t baking soda 1C milk 2 bananas (ripe), mashed 1/4 C walnuts, chopped ■■ Preheat oven to 180°C. ■■ Grease and line a 25cm loaf pan. ■■ Beat butter and sugars until pale and creamy. ■■ Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. ■■ Sift flour, baking powder, and cinnamon. ■■ Dissolve baking soda in milk. Add to creamed butter mixture with bananas and walnuts. Mix together. ■■ Pour batter into prepared loaf pan, and bake for 1 hour or until a skewer comes out clean.
■■ Preheat oven to 180°C. ■■ Grease or line a baking tray with baking paper. ■■ In a large bowl beat butter, sugar and vanilla until light and fluffy. ■■ Sift in flour and cocoa, stir thoroughly with the butter mixture until combined before stirring in the cornflakes. ■■ Place heaped teaspoonfuls onto baking tray. ■■ Squeeze mixture together gently if necessary then press lightly with a fork. ■■ Bake for 15-20 minutes. ■■ Cool on a wire rack before icing. Icing: ■■ Mix icing sugar, cocoa, butter and 1T boiling water at a time until combined, adding more hot water, if necessary, until icing is a spreadable consistency. ■■ Ice biscuits and top with half a walnut.
2C dried fruit, roughly chopped 1t vanilla paste 500ml water 1 1/2 C wholemeal flour 1t ground ginger 1C brown sugar 170g butter, chilled and diced 1 egg, cold 1/2 C rolled oats ■■ Preheat the oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced). ■■ Line a 20x30cm lamington tin with baking paper. ■■ Place the dried fruit and vanilla in a small saucepan and cover with 2 cups of water. ■■ Place over a gentle heat and cook for 10-15 minutes or until the fruit has softened completely into a jammy compote. ■■ Set aside to cool. ■■ Place the remaining ingredients in the bowl of a food processor. ■■ Blitz just until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. ■■ Place in the fridge until ready to bake. ■■ Press half of the mixture into the tin. ■■ Cover with the fruit compote and then top with remaining mixture. ■■ Bake for 25 minutes or until golden on top. ■■ Let cool, then slice into squares.
Apple sauce cake 125g butter 180g sugar 2 eggs 2C plain flour 1t cinnamon 1t baking powder 375g apple sauce Topping: 2t butter, melted 1 1/2 t caster sugar 1/2 t cinnamon ■■ Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced). ■■ Grease a ring tin and line the base with baking paper. ■■ Beat butter and sugar until pale and creamy. ■■ Add eggs one at a time, beating well between each addition. ■■ Fold through flour, cinnamon and baking powder. ■■ Finally, fold through the apple sauce. ■■ Pour into prepared tin and bake for 30-35 minutes until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. ■■ Once cooked, remove cake from tin and place right side up on a cooling rack. Topping: ■■ Brush the cake with melted butter. ■■ Combine sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle over the top.
Hint: Having an electric beater will make many recipes much easier.

Garlic aioli ■■ To make the aioli, place egg yolks, vinegar, lemon juice, garlic and mustard into a food processor and puree on a high speed. ■■ Add oil slowly in a fine stream until a mayonnaise type consistency has been reached.
■■ Season to taste. Fry the squid ■■ In a large shallow dish, sift together the flours, salt and pepper. Dip the strips of squid into milk, then into the seasoned flour, tossing to coat well. Dust off excess flour. ■■ Place enough oil into a frying pan to shallow fry. Shallow fry the squid strips for a couple of minutes or until golden brown and the edges are beginning to curl. ■■ Cut limes in half and dip in sugar. Place a frying pan on medium heat. Add lime halves cut-side down to the frying pan and cook quickly until caramelised and golden. ■■ Serve squid on a bed of rocket and garnish with caramelised limes. Big payout for Noves Former France coach Guy Noves is entitled to one million euros in compensation for wrongful dismissal by the national rugby federation, a French court says. The FFR alleged Noves was guilty of serious misconduct, but a Toulouse labour tribunal decided otherwise. Noves was asking for 2.88 million euros. Both parties have the right to appeal, although initial reactions suggested that they had accepted the outcome. “I am satisfied with this decision. First hints of Japan squad Blues loose forward Akira Ioane has been included in an All Blacks foundation day squad as preparations for the international season get underway. Forty-one players have been named to attend a one day camp in Wellington next week. A second foundation day for North Island-based players will take place in Auckland next month and one for South Island-based players in Christchurch in June. Ioane is the only uncapped player. But there’s no spot for his veteran Blues team-mate Ma’a Nonu. Injured All Blacks Sam Cane and Waisake Naholo have also been included in the foundation day squad. All Blacks coach Steve Hansen will select a 31-man squad for the Rugby World Cup later in the year following the Rugby Championship. New Zealand Rugby Head of High Performance Mike Anthony said the timing of the foundation days had been agreed at last year’s meeting between Super Rugby coaches and All Blacks management. “Given the All Blacks have an incredibly short lead-in time to the

Savea not moving Former All Blacks winger Julian Savea has shut down reports that he will be moving to struggling South African rugby outfit the Kings. Savea, who scored 46 tries in 54 tests for the All Blacks before joining Toulon last year, has fallen out of favour at the French club and has been publicly criticised by owner Mourad Boudjellal. 25,000 sign petition A petition opposing calls for the Crusaders to change its name following the Christchurch terrorist attacks that targeted the city’s Muslim worshippers is nearing 25,000 supporters. Intensity high on futsal finals night Battling for possession during the finals of Mid Canterbury Football’s futsal competition for term one are Alistair Kilgour and Tyler Maher. The final games of the term were fought out at Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre on Sunday, with the junior section being won by Methven Messi and the youth section by Rangers. Shits and Giggles took out the senior social grade with their social team, and the premiership with their premier team. They played Methven Methletics – a team that had come up from social – in their final game and were given a run for their money, with the scores tied at 6-all with three minutes remaining. But S&G pulled away and finished with a 10-6 win. The futsal competition – which caters from Year 1 to senior – had good numbers this term, and it is hoped numbers will continue to climb in the future.

Hazard still a star for Blues With Real Madrid reportedly lining up a huge offer to tempt Eden Hazard to the Bernabeu next season, Chelsea’s fans may wonder how many more times they will be able to savour watching the Belgian maestro at his dazzling best. An inspired Hazard, whose contract expires at the end of next season, scored both goals in the 2-0 Premier League victory over West Ham United, the first a dazzling solo effort that brought back memories of Diego Maradona in his pomp. His second, in the 90th minute, capped a mesmerising display that sealed Chelsea’s third consecutive league win. The 28-year-old has scored 19 goals in all competitions for Chelsea this season to equal his best haul. Manager Maurizio Sarri said having Hazard in such unstoppable form made winning “easy” but appeared almost resigned to losing him. Asked about a fee of Stg100 million ($NZ183m) Real Madrid are reported to be willing to pay for Hazard, Sarri replied: “It is too cheap in this market. “We have seen in the last few windows every price I think. So it is very hard to get another player like him.”
Hazard, who joined the club in 2012, offered a pinch of comfort after the match but the fear remains, for Chelsea fans and anyone who enjoys watching a master craftsman at work, that his days in London might be numbered. “They are wrong,” he said. “For now I am just focusing on Chelsea until the end of the season. “We are in good momentum. A slow start ended up costing the Ashburton Barbarians in Saturday’s opening round of the Canterbury Rugby League division one competition. The Barbarians headed to Burnham to play the defending champion Burnham Chevaliers and came away with a 30-14 loss, which wasn’t the start to the season they were after, Barbarians coach Steve Gamble said. “In saying that, I was impressed with the way the boys played. “I think the first game jitters and all that, the boys just weren’t completing sets and getting a bit too excited, but they did settle down in the second half,” Gamble said. The Barbarians simply gave up too much ball and territory in the first half and by the time the second half rolled around, while they played better, they were tired from all of the extra tackling they’d had to do in the first half.
Gamble said the Chevaliers were a side against which no team could afford to make mistakes, because if they did, the Burnham side would punish them. But Gamble said his side never gave up and he was impressed with the heart they showed. “It might not have been the result that we wanted, or the score, but I think the boys are looking really good,” Gamble said. This week the team was looking to build on their week one performance and hopefully pick up their first win, but at this stage they didn’t know who that would be against. The Barbarians only found out last Monday that their season would be getting under way on Saturday – they thought they had another week or two until the competition started. Gamble said the Barbarians will be playing the Woolston Rams at Robilliard Park on Saturday, with a 1pm kickoff.

A moment in the Manly Sea Eagles and South Sydney Rabbitohs match has seen Cronulla Sharks skipper Paul Gallen reveal a tactic “every team does”. The HIA has aimed to test concussions in a bid to lessen the long-term effects of head and brain injuries on players. However, Marty Taupau, who went off with what looked like a sore shoulder, was given the HIA test, which gave his side a free interchange. “I’ve had an issue with the HIA forever and a day,” Gallen said on Channel 9’s Sunday Footy Show.
“In my opinion this isn’t a HIA and if it is a HIA, he shouldn’t be allowed back in the game because he stays down for an extended period of time. “He has a neck problem here in my opinion. “I’m not a doctor but I’m pretty sure it’s a burner. “He goes through a HIA, which is a free interchange, and gets to come back on the field which is another free interchange. “We talk about this game becoming a war of attrition and limited interchange and referees aren’t giving as many penalties

Warriors probably right, says Johnson Shaun Johnson has admitted the Warriors were probably right to force him out of the club. The Auckland-raised Johnson’s messy and premature departure from his hometown club caused a huge controversy last year. The way it unfolded left the Warriors without a recognised halves partner for Blake Green, but it did raise the prospect of Johnson reaching new heights with the tough Cronulla outfit. Johnson is expected to return from injury against the champion Roosters at Shark Park on Saturday night, when he and Chad Townsend will face the star pairing of Cooper Cronk and Luke Keary. Johnson has had a promising start to the season, but was
absent with a quadricep injury when the Sharks were beaten by Parramatta in the latest round. Asked by former State of Origin playmaker Jamie Soward whether he needed re-energising, Johnson told NRLTV: “I probably did to be fair, now looking back on it”. “When you are in the moment, you probably don’t think you do. Obviously the Warriors saw me becoming a bit stale and maybe they were right. “I took that on board and came over here.” Johnson had a brilliant debut year for the Warriors when they reached the 2011 grand final, but that was followed by six years out of the playoffs. My Warriors must do better
I
n recent weeks I have refrained from writing an opinion piece on my favourite topic, my beloved Warriors. There were two reasons – one being not wanting to get too far ahead of myself, and the other being not wanting to jinx them. But now we’re four weeks into the competition, so I feel the time is right to put forward my thoughts on the NRL team that has got to be – let’s be honest – a contender for the hardest team ever to support. We’re four weeks in and after watching the Warriors blow the Bulldogs off the park in round one I thought we’d be four wins from four outings at this point. But instead we’ve got a 50 per cent strike rate, having won two from four to be ninth on the table. It was hard to know what this season had in store for us Warriors fans. Last year we made the top eight for the first time in donkey’s years and that was great, even though we didn’t make it past week one of the play-offs. In a perfect world you’d take that 2018 season and build on it and become true premiership

contenders in 2019, but this was the Warriors and it was highly possible they could go in the complete other direction. A big talking point ahead of the 2019 season was the departure of play-maker Shaun Johnson to the Sharks. To many, Johnson was the Warriors – he was the magic spark who popped up at just the right time to produce that something special we needed. How much would his absence be felt? In week one, it wasn’t felt a lot in all honesty. This new guy I’d never heard of before called Adam Keighran ran onto the park and slotted in pretty darn well, and the Warriors produced a not-too-bad a performance to put the Bulldogs away. In week two and three though, we were left wondering whether maybe week one was more of a case of the Bulldogs being pretty bad, than the Warriors being pretty good. Week three in particular – that awful loss to Manly in Christchurch – was the hardest to watch. I was one of the thousands who headed along to the game

and even dragged my husband and kids along with me, and we ended up doing something I never do – we left early. It was only 10 minutes before the end, the score had blown out way too far for one of those awesome Warriors comebacks to even be a hint of a possibility, the kids were cold and bored, so we left. That performance in Christchurch was not a performance worthy of a top eight contender, and fortunately last weekend against early wooden spoon contenders the Titans, the Warriors improved and managed to get back in the winner’s circle. But, four games in and having only won two games was not the position us Warriors fans were hoping to be in. Winning 50 per cent of our games this season would not be
enough for a top eight finish. Last year’s NRL was the tightest ever. The Warriors just made the top eight, finishing in eight spot with 15 wins from 24 outings. The top qualifiers and minor premiers, the Roosters, only won 16 of their 24, with only two competition points separating the top eight. The Warriors won five on the trot to start the season in 2018 and that set them up for the season ahead, and while two from four wasn’t a bad start – we’re one of six teams sitting on four points after two rounds – we must do better. Last season was tremendous. The Warriors were like a new team and only the odd glimpse of the Warriors of old sneaking in, but this season already there’s been too much of the Warriors of old – the Warriors that had us fans spending much more time than we’d have liked with our heads in our hands. This season I’d really like to have my hands in the air in celebration a lot more than using them to hold my head in despair, and only time will tell which way the cookie will crumble.
Brennan joins Tigers Richmond have made their first big AFLW move, signing star forward Katie Brennan away from the Western Bulldogs. The Tigers, who will enter the competition in 2020, announced Brennan will join the club on a two-year deal yesterday. One of the competition’s original marquees for the debut season in 2017, Brennan captained the Western Bulldogs in their first two seasons and was co-captain this year with Ellie Blackburn. She wasn’t a part of the Dogs’ premiership team in 2018 after she was controversially suspended from the grand final in a case that was headed to the Human Rights Commission before a deal was struck with the AFL. - AAP
Wilson in career switch Australian basketball representative Tom Wilson has quit the Sydney Kings and the NBL to chase an AFL career. Six weeks after making his debut for the Boomers, the 21-year-old guard officially cut ties with the Kings yesterday to make the transition to Australian rules football. Collingwood, Geelong and Gold Coast have been linked as suitors for Wilson, who is expected to sign a multi-year deal as a Category B rookie this off-season. Category B contracts fall outside the salary cap, with Collingwood’s Mason Cox and Geelong’s Mark Blicavs both successfully transitioning to senior lists in recent years. - AAP

F1 set to celebrate contentious milestone race Formula One will celebrate its 1000th world championship race this weekend at the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai, one of the sport’s newer tracks, but the milestone requires careful wording. The sport has often had a problem with anniversaries and this one is no exception. The fact is that some of the 999 championship races have been questionable grands prix and several past race winners didn’t drive an F1 car. From 1950 to 1960, 11 editions of the Indianapolis 500 were included as part of the championship even if very few F1 drivers crossed the Atlantic to compete as homegrown racers took all the points and raced to their own rules. Bill Vukovich finished seventh in the 1953 F1 championship, and sixth in 1954, after winning the Indy 500 in those years but racing in no other rounds. His death in the 1955 Indy technically made him the first driver to be killed while competing in an F1 championship race. Yet Vukovich never drove an F1 car. In 1952 and 1953 the world championship was run to Formula Two rules because there were not enough F1 cars to fill the grid after Alfa Romeo pulled out. That means that 26 races included in the championship tally since the first at Silverstone in 1950 did not actually feature F1 cars. Hungarian Ferenc Szisz is generally regarded as the first winner of a grand prix, at Le Mans in 1906, while the Monaco GP, glamour race of the current calendar, dates back to 1929. Calling China the 1000th F1 race would be similarly inaccurate since there have been numerous non-championship F1 races staged down the decades. The last was at Brands Hatch in 1983 when reigning world champion Keke Rosberg stood on top of a podium that featured American Danny Sullivan and Australia’s 1980 F1 champion Alan Jones. While it is often stated that only two women have raced in the F1 world championship, Desire Wilson won a round of the British F1 championship in a Wolf at Brands Hatch in 1980. So the Chinese GP will be the 1000th race to count towards the official FIA drivers’ world championship standings? Choices for speed sensation The greatest sprinter in New Zealand history is set to have some input into whether his national record is broken. Gus Nketia holds the New Zealand 100 metre record, with a time of 10.11 seconds, but his record is rapidly being chased down by his son, Edward Osei-Nketia, who ran a stunning 10.19 at the Australian championships over the weekend. However, as Osei-Nketia closes in on his father’s time, the question has become whether his son will go past the mark in New Zealand colours, or whether he will be representing Australia. Athletics New Zealand have admitted that Australia, with the vast resources and the relay programme they possess, is an attractive option for Osei-Nketia, and Australian officials have approached the 17-year-old about running in the green and gold. Nketia says the choice is likely to be made before his son’s 18th birthday, in early May. While he will give advice and be a sounding board in the decision-making process, the call will ultimately be his son’s to make, though Nketia did note what the main factors may be in the eventual decision. “We need to make a decision on which country he wants to represent, because there is the [Oceania Championships] coming up. “It comes down to Edward, whichever way he wants to go. “We want a country that will be behind him to help him achieve what he wants to get, and not to represent just for the sake of the sport,” he told Radio Sport. However, there could be another complicating factor. Osei-Nketia has desires to be an All Black, and is on a scholarship at Scots College in Wellington. Nketia says at the moment, rugby is still a major option in his son’s sporting future. “Right now, it’s all about rugby to him. “He loves rugby, New Zealand, the All Blacks, all these things. “Back in Canberra, he was in the first XV, pretty good on the field, but obviously Canberra rugby is very different to New Zealand schoolboy rugby, so we have to see what impact he’s going to have in New Zealand – the standard is quite high compared to here. “So if I can look at that side of

Rose lining up a green jacket at the 83rd Masters World No.1 Justin Rose is the man to beat at this week’s Masters, where recent history suggests golf’s biggest names will populate the leaderboard by Sunday at a major championship that is more predictable than any other. able to draw his driver, fade his irons from hanging lies and have the artistry to hit great recovery shots. He must also be on form and mentally resilient. Englishman Rose ticks all these boxes. It is almost as if Augusta National was designed with him in mind.
He has finished top-15 each of the past five years, including a pair of runner-up finishes, most notably a play-off loss to Sergio Garcia in 2017. Rose has been a machine from tee to green at Augusta, and if the putter co-operates it will take a mighty performance from someone else to beat him. - PA

Some of Canterbury’s top club netballers were in action in Ashburton on Sunday, and this weekend they’re set to come back for more. Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre is hosting the annual inter-centre netball competition which sees clubs from Christchurch, Selwyn, North Canterbury, Mid Canterbury and South Canterbury face off against each other in what is an important part of the pre-season buildup for all teams. Day one played out in Ashburton on Sunday with each team playing two games, and the teams will return again this Sunday for two more games to wrap the
competition up. Mid Canterbury has four teams – Celtic, Methven A, Hampstead A and Ashburton College A – playing in the competition’s premier one grade, and two – United A and Southern A – playing in the premier two grade. Last year’s Mid Canterbury champions Celtic A are playing with a squad which is a combination of both their A and B sides – both teams finished last season in the Mid Canterbury Netball premier one grade. They picked up a 41-38 win over Old Boys A from Timaru in their second game, after starting the competition with a 56-34 loss to Kia Toa, a side which came to Ashburton with a couple of familiar faces in their squad, former
Ashburton players Chelsea Corbett and Sophie Beveridge, who both featured in the shooting circle on day one. Christchurch’s Kia Toa proved to be one of the toughest teams to face on court on day one, as they followed up their win over Celtic with a 67-31 win over another Mid Canterbury side – Hampstead A – in their second game. That was Hampstead A’s second loss of the day, with their first coming at the hands of another Mid Canterbury side, Ashburton College. The young school side took that one out 49-38. It was a good day for Ashburton College A, taking on Timaru’s Harlequins in the final game of the day and winning 43-31, to
be the only local side to take two wins from two outings. Harlequins was another side with some familiar faces on court, with Ashburton women Kayla Frew and Makayla Cromie taking to the court for them, and they went down to Craighead A in their other game, 46-41. Methven A were Craighead A’s other opposition on day one and that game ended in a 39-all draw. Earlier, Methven A’s day got off to a not-so-good start, going down 67-33 to Selwyn’s Broadfield A. It was a good day for Broadfield A, beating Rangiora High School 70-43 in their other game, while the Rangiora school side’s other game was also a loss, going down to Old Boys A 47-40.
In the premier two grade, the day didn’t start so well for Mid Canterbury’s United A, going down to Technical B 60-36, and they had the bye in the second round so played a friendly game instead, to ensure they didn’t miss out on valuable time on court. Southern A had a better start, beating Rolleston 42-34, but in game two they were beaten by UC A 67-46. In other premier two games, UC A made it two-from-two with a 58-48 win over Marist Albion, while Technical B also beat Marist Albion 60-57. Villa Maria were also in action in premier two, and they beat Rolleston 67-20 in their one game on Sunday.
