Failure to give way blamed
Stern words from Preece
By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
A failure to give way has been determined to have caused two of three fatal crashes that have occurred in the Ashburton District this year. Speaking at the Ashburton District Road Safety co-ordinating committee, Mid South Canterbury highway patrol Sergeant Steve Burgerhout said police believed the crashes at the intersection of Mitcham and Hepburns roads and Junction and Coldstream roads had been due to a failure to give way, leading to the deaths of four people.
P3
“Four of the five deaths on our roads this year can all be attributed to a failure to give way,” he said. The confirmation of avoidable accidents, which have resulted in death, adds to the frustration and emotion surrounding the current road toll for the year of 146, the highest the figure has been at this point of the year over the past five years. The first of the fatal crashes locally was a two-car crash that occurred at the intersection of Coldstream and Junction roads just after 10am oan March 4.
The crash claimed the life of 82-yearold Mary Rose Ashfield of Ashburton, who passed away in hospital following the crash. An inspection and case review was carried out on the intersection by the Ashburton District Council and it was deemed unnecessary to upgrade, with scheduled maintenance set to happen in the near future.

Focus on M. bovis surge NZME An independent report has been commissioned into the cause and effects of the current surge in the mycoplasma bovis eradication programme and to identify additional immediate improvements. Last month, the Ministry for Primary Industries announced the programme was increasing activity before autumn and winter stock movements. About 300 farmers would be contacted as a priority and it was expected 250 of those would have notice-of-direction movement controls placed on them immediately and, following testing, that 10 per cent to 12 per cent might become confirmed properties. About two-thirds of the properties were beef farms and the remainder dairy. As of last Friday, 111 of the 300 high-risk farms had been contacted and 56 notices of direction triggered. Management and oversight of the response focus were being changed.
Those changes would strengthen MPI’s work at a regional level, starting with Canterbury, the update said. There would also be an increased focus on working with industry partners and key groups, including Federated Farmers. An independent industry expert had been commissioned, alongside the MPI’s chief science adviser, to deliver the report on the current surge and the findings would be shared with farm-
burton Mayor Donna Favel announced a group of representatives from the local agricultural and health industries had been formed to help address potential and ongoing concerns regarding M. bovis in the Ashburton District. The group’s objective was to help facilitate discussions between the MPI and relevant organisations “to ensure information is consistently shared in a timely and targeted manner with the district’s farming community’’. Favel was joined by representatives from the MPI, Federated Farmers, DairyNZ, Beef + Lamb New Zealand, the Rural Support Trust Mid Canterbury, Vet Ent and Ashburton Hospital. “M. bovis has inflicted a great deal of stress and uncertainty for our people, and we each recognised that something more needed to be done to help support our farmers during this time of need,’’ she said. Ashburton was the district most affected by the disease, she said.
ers. The Technical Advisory Group would be reconvened ahead of its planned midyear review to review the programme, particularly in light of the current surge – “and reassure us that the programme remains on track towards eradication’’. Kelvan Smith had been appointed as independent chairman of the governance group to improve oversight and decision-making. Last week, Ash-

Police in the Ashburton District are growing frustrated at the high number of drivers they are seeing using mobile telephones while driving. Speaking at the Ashburton District Road Safety co-ordinating committee meeting yesterday, Mid South Canterbury Highway Patrol Sergeant Steve Burgerhout said he had been taking time to record numbers of drivers he could see using mobile phones
drivers can cover more than just those using their cellphones, but that police can only take action against phone use. “There is no specific offence for eating while driving per se, even though that is obviously still distracting,” he said. “If you are driving along with two hands on a pie and have to react quickly, you aren’t going to be able to. So if there was something like that, all we could do would be to explore something like reckless misuse of a motor vehicle.”
matic loss of licence. Burgerhout said he was pleased to note that in the hour that he spent monitoring, all drivers he saw were wearing seatbelts and he felt cellphones were now a bigger issue. In the period of July, 2018, to the end of February, 2019, highway patrol staff in the district handed out 372 tickets for distracted driving, while they handed out 592 for restraint offences in the same time period. Burgerhout said distracted

Luxton to support End of Life Choice Bill By Susan Sandys susan.s@theguardian.co.nz
Labour List MP based in Rangitata Jo Luxton says she will support the End of Life Choice Bill at its second reading. MPs are set to debate and vote on the bill later this month. “This difficult debate is undoubtedly the single biggest decision I have had to make as an MP, and one that I feel an enormous responsibility to our people to get right,” Luxton said. Luxton said she had not wanted to show her hand over the issue until meeting with the bill’s sponsor David Seymour. “That meeting occurred recently, and we were able to openly discuss the latest changes to the Bill, as well as the criteria for my support.” She said her vote would be based on the provision that robust protections would be in place, and that access to assisted dying would be for terminally ill only. “I believe that by locking in the right checks and balances, we will deliver peace of mind for New Zealand families,” she said. Luxton joins fellow local MPs, National’s Andrew Falloon and Amy Adams, in planning to support the bill at second reading.

Topp Twins to take stage in Methven By Susan Sandys
susan.s@theguardian.co.nz
Dame Lynda Topp admits to a few nerves as she prepares to take to the stage in Methven this month. She and sister Dame Jools will kick off their Topp Twins Heading for the Hills Tour on May 23, 7pm, at the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall Methven. “It’s always frightening playing your home town, because there’s people out there you know,” Lynda said. While the iconic duo have a 40-year performing career behind them, they have never performed a big show in the ski town, where Lynda operates her Topp Country Café with wife Donna Topp. Lynda said she believed the last time they had performed there was at the Methven A&P Show some years ago. Despite the nerves, she was more than ever looking forward to entertaining audiences where she expected to see many familiar faces. The day after the show the twins plan to have a leisurely breakfast at Lynda and Donna’s “dame good café”. The Topp Twins will then hit the road and perform at Oamaru Opera House on May 25

and Balclutha War Memorial Hall on May 26 as they slowly take the tour in stages to every corner of New Zealand. “Not a lot of acts go to the small towns anymore, some small towns are thriving, other’s not doing so well. When you turn up into small towns they seem to be really appreciative, you have thought about them,” Lynda said. “We have had such a great run in New Zealand, you have to pay back a little bit, you can’t just keep doing the big shows in the big cities.” And she was looking forward to the lifestyle of living in the Topp Twins travelling stinky for a few nights. “We love it, it’s like a lifestyle when we go on the Heading for the Hills Tour.” Tickets were available online, but yesterday she had 100 couriered to the café as many older people preferred to buy them this way. At the Methven show, there would be a group of Mt Somers women doing the bar as they fundraised for Fiji orphanages, and Lynda and Jools planned to themselves make a donation to Ashburton and Mt Hutt girls’ rugby.

■■ WHEELS WEEK
Wheels Week rolls on By Jaime Pitt-MacKay Jaime.p@theguardian.co.nz
Organisers of Wheels Week have been amazed with the crowds at events so far, and are looking forward to things rolling in to the weekend. Wheels Week, which now runs over a fortnight, is well in to its first week, and chairperson of the organising committee Ross Butterick said they have been amazed at the crowds that have shown up to events so far. “It has been very good, the crowds have been terrific everywhere,” he said. “I am involved with the speedway stuff myself and the crowds were terrific. “We had cars from Whangarei to Invercargill, probably our biggest event yet and the week just keeps building as it goes.” Butterick said he thinks the success behind Wheels Week is the variety of events on offer, and the amount of support it receives from the town. “There really is something for everyone,” he said. “All the town also gets behind the event and we have worked on it hard and we have cut down the committee to four people.”
The week continues tonight with a visit to a prestige car garage, which there are still tickets available for, Butterick said. “I have been a couple of times and there are some wonderful vehicles out there,” he said. “It is something that you can’t see normally.” Tickets are available from Butterick on 0274778068, with minivans departing A to B Autos at 7.15pm, and returning at 9.15pm. On Thursday and Friday a number of vehicles from multiple groups will be on display on the East Street Green. The Americar Rod & Custom Club, Ashburton Toyota, Mid Canterbury 4X4 Club and the Ashburton Car Club will all be displaying vehicles. On Saturday and Sunday, one of the main drawcards of Wheels Week will take place in the Ashburton Industrial Estate in the form of the AutoSparks Street Sprints. Saturday will also see a crack team of local celebrities duke it out against the wheelchair basketball team in a game of wheelchair basketball at 3pm at the Oxford Street Stadium.
Plans afoot for donations NZME Details of a plan to get more of the money raised following the Christchurch terror attacks to the families and the loved ones of the victims of the shooting will be unveiled later this week. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has also revealed the Government will be partnering with Victim Support to support the distribution of the funds. A Givealittle fundraising page raised $10.5 million, donated by almost 100,000 people. An additional $3 million has also been raised by several Muslim groups. But, according to RNZ, only $3 million has been distributed so far. Ardern yesterday confirmed elements of a distribution plan for the remainder of the funds will be unveiled later this week.
She said that ultimately, the donations are being handled by Victim Support – an organisation that supports the victims of crime. “We have been advised that they [Victim Support] plan to issue an outline of how they will be working and distributing the funds some time this week. “Ultimately, they don’t want to hold on to them [the funds] – but they do want to make sure they’re working alongside the Muslim community to make sure the right decisions are being made along the way.” She also said details as to how long Victim Support would continue to accept donations relating to the attack would be unveiled this week as well. “I don’t think there is any question that there has been significant generosity and that will make a big difference.”

Awards beckon for The Angelettas Methven girl-band The Angelettas are off to the country music capital of New Zealand this month. Playing predominantly country rock, originals, covers and instrumentals, the five members are all in Year 8 at Mount Hutt College and students of Methven music teacher Wayne Pannett. Alice Miers, Rose Dargue, Charli Hellyer, Bella Casey-Solly and Leah Maw will head south to Gore on May 30 for the Gold Guitar awards, where they plan to audition in four classes to gain a spot in the final and perform at the junior and intermediate concert on June 1. The Angelettas will also compete in the Freeze Ya Bits Off Busking Awards, where members will set up their electric guitars and keyboard to run though battery-powered amps on the main streets of Gore. For these awards, judges make their way up and down the streets picking the best. The Angelettas members have been rehearsing three times a week at nearby Methven Primary School where Pannett is based, as well as throughout the school holidays. This month they will up their practice schedule further, and are holding a fund-raising concert on May 19, 4.30pm, in the Woolshed Theatre on Back Track, where they will be joined by local country music singer and singing teacher Amelia James. ■■WAIKATO DISTRICT HEALTH BOARD
NZME
Health Minister David Clark has appointed a commissioner to oversee the troubled Waikato Health Board. a having a Crown Monitor, it was unable to address ongoing performance issues with clinical services. It had also been unable to recruit a permanent chief executive since Nigel Murray resigned in October 2017. “I have consistently made it clear to DHB chairs that I expect them to be careful stewards of our health system and deliver quality services to their communities. Where those expectations
are not met I have a range of options available, including appointing a commissioner. “Poutasi spent 11 years as Director-General of Health and would be tasked with improving the DHB’s financial and clinical performance. I also expect robust governance arrangements to continue, particularly community and iwi engagement. She would also be making deputy commissioner appointments.”
Poutasi will share her time between the Waikato DHB and the New Zealand Qualifications Authority where she is chief executive. Clark also said he would change legislation so that he could cancel the Waikato DHB elections this year while the commissioner was in place. They would resume in October 2022. Clark said last month he was considering replacing the board with a commissioner over his “serious dissatisfaction” with its performance. He gave the board until May 3 to respond. In a letter to Clark, all board members offered to resign, with the exception of Dave Macpherson and Mary Anne Gill. Commenting after yesterday’s announcement, Macpherson disagreed with Clark’s decision. “Despite some bad earlier decisions, it wasn’t ‘dysfunctional’, but given the minister never spoke to any members, other than those he’d appointed himself, there was no chance he’d recognise the large amount of work the board has been doing to turn around the failing ship it had inherited,” Macpherson said. “There has not been due process, and nor has there been any democratic process.”

Kiwi family able to retrieve some belongings NZME The family of Alan Culverwell who was shot and killed on his yacht in Panama by pirates will be allowed to retrieve some of their belongings. Culverwell’s sister, Derryn Hughes said the family will be allowed back onto the boat after spending the past five days with only the clothes they had on at the time of the attack. “Part of what today is about is getting access to the boat and
taking off their personal effects that they need to take with them,” she said. “Some dear friends of theirs took the two children out the other day and bought them new outfits because literally, they’d been living in the clothes that they had on.” Culverwell’s daughter, 11, and wife, Derryn Culverwell, were injured in the attack which took place under the cover of darkness on May 2. Health Minister sacks board Health Minister David Clark appointed a commissioner to the troubled Waikato District Health Board yesterday, saying it was “necessary” to address its numerous issues. Clark announced former Director-General of Health Dr Karen Poutasi will take up the commissioner’s role from today. The 11 board members who have been sacked are chair Sally Webb, deputy chair Professor Margaret Wilson, Crystal Beavis, Sally Christie, Martin Gallagher, Mary Anne Gill, Tania Hodges, Dave Macpherson, Pippa Mahood, Sharon Mariu and Dr Clyde Wade. “After careful consideration of the submissions from board members, I have decided that the appointment of a commissioner is necessary to lead the significant changes required at the DHB,” Clark said. “While I thank board members for their service, installing a commissioner is a necessary step towards addressing the DHB’s deteriorating financial position, lack of strong governance, and ongoing performance issues with clinical services.” Clark said instability at a governance level had meant despite

The family had been travelling on their yacht for the past two years and were making their way back to New Zealand at the time of the attack. Local authorities will not let the family return home as investigators piece together the crime, however.
Leandro Herrera and Avelino Arosemena have appeared in court over the attack, reports Reuters. They are charged with aggravated homicide, robbery, criminal association and mistreatment of a minor. A third suspect made a separate court appearance because they are a minor. Derryn’s ongoing “responsibilities” to the investigation meant she would likely be unable to fly home for least another week, her sister-in-law Derryn Hughes said.
Foul play Vandals are being blamed for attacking the putting greens of the Wairakei International Golf Course, forcing its closure till spring. In a press release, the celebrated 18-hole course said the damage was significantly impacting the condition of playing surfaces. The damage started to become apparent during Easter weekend. Extensive soil and foliar tests have returned clear results. “We are awaiting further soil and foliar tests but have been advised that the cause of the damage is due to the inadvertent application of a herbicide. “We suspect that the introduction of this substance was intentionally done so by a third party.” - NZME
Crash victims named Police can now name the three people who died in a crash involving a truck and a van on State Highway 1 in Hatepe, south of Taupo, on Saturday. They were Joseph Steven Takau, 41, Viliami Tatofi Fifita, 22, and Siale O’Failoto Koloi, 22, all from Auckland. Police said their thoughts were with their families and friends at this tragic time. The Serious Crash unit continues to investigate the cause of the crash. - NZME

Crackers and cheese, no please
N
othing in life should be taken for granted, be it money, work or even a couple of crackers on a plate with a few slices of cheese. Often it’s the little, seemingly innocuous, things in life that we tend not to give 100 per cent to. The things that you look at and think “she’ll be right” or “that’ll do” all the while knowing it’s not your best effort and you could have done that little bit better. Although little they can sometimes be, they are the most significant though, and damage can always be done by taking the most simplistic and easy route available. Ashburton College principal Ross Preece gave a prime example of that yesterday when he presented his disappointment to
the Ashburton District Council’s international relations sub-committee, advising that we’d better up our game in the future if we intend drawing high-flying figures to our district. He expressed his shock at the fact that a powerful visitor to the district was offered up nothing more than instant coffee, crackers and cheese, two commercial bought peanut brownies and three slices of commercially made Christmas cake.
And he’s got a really good point. But what’s more disappointing here? The fact that such basic food was, most likely, cobbled together from what was left over in the fridge or the fact that the opportunity to showcase some of the incredible services available from around the district weren’t utilised to further showcase what this district has to offer. We have some remarkable restaurants, cafes and food outlets which would have jumped over the top of each other to be given the opportunity to provide catering for the occasion. Surely such special visits like that from influential people around the globe are deserving of the best possible services we have at our fingertips.
There was robust discussion around the council table a while back about the amount of money spent on hosting international visitors when they are in Ashburton and rightly or wrongly, it was decided to tighten the purse strings. The previous council could probably have been best described as being lavish with their spending of such things and something had to give with a number of councillors, both new and from that existing council moved to have things tightened right up. But you wouldn’t expect things to have been that restricted that the option of taking visitors out for a lunch to showcase produce sourced from within our boundaries would become an untena-
ble option. There is a lot of emphasis put on building our relationships with international visitors and ensuring that the Ashburton District is portrayed in the best possible fashion to the rest of the world but the prospect of plain crackers and a couple of slices of cheese will leave a pretty stale taste in the mouth of anyone. So let’s hope the council heeds the advice of Preece, who has sounded the warning bell to those on the sub-committee and challenged them to be better. It’s not good enough to just take things for granted that they will suffice, when the end goal is to portray yourself as something far more forward-thinking and proactive than that.

TODAY IN HISTORY Today is Wednesday, May 8, the 128th day of 2019. There are 237 days left in the year. Today’s highlight in history: On May 8, 1996, South Africa took another step from apartheid to democracy by adopting a constitution that guaranteed equal rights for blacks and whites. On this date: In 1429, the Siege of Orleans during the Hundred Years’ War ended as English troops withdrew after being defeated by French forces under Joan of Arc. In 1541, Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto reached the Mississippi River. In 1794, Antoine Lavoisier, the father of modern chemistry, was executed on the guillotine during France’s Reign of Terror. In 1921, Sweden’s Parliament voted to abolish the death penalty. In 1945, President Harry S. Truman announced on radio that Nazi Germany’s forces had surrendered, and that “the flags of freedom fly all over Europe”. In 1958, Vice President Richard Nixon was shoved, stoned, booed and spat upon by antiAmerican protesters in Lima, Peru. In 1970, anti-war protests took place across the United States and around the world; in New York, construction workers broke up a demonstration on Wall Street. Cheryl Moana Marie hits No. 1. Pop singer John Rowles established himself as an international star in the late 1960s. His hit single Cheryl Moana Marie sold a million copies worldwide. OUT OF SCHOOL
N
ow from the silly-ideasto-try-without-research bin – Friday afternoons off for children. Yip, our long lost relatives from the coal valleys of West Wales have come up with a brilliant idea to deal with a problem they can’t be bothered solving. It seems their dear little lads and lassies get tired at school after midday on a Friday, so rather than think outside the coal shaft, they have decided to just send the kids home. (The Telegraph, April 12, 2019). Yip, if little Tommy Jones begins yawning in the middle of his lesson learning how to read Welsh road signs, pack him off home. Or if precocious Wynny starts sleeping after a late night of watching The Valleys, and eating cheese on toast then phone auntie and get her picked up in the chippie van. Now being the innovative educational thinker I am, I immediately processed what this means for Welsh teachers and present to you the top five activities they do as soon as the kids have left the school gate.
Number five – learn their vowels Yip, despite holding the title of educationalist, Welsh teachers still don’t know their vowels. Now that’s fine when you want to drive around Wales, but they realised on their little OE to New Zealand, that in order to operate in this world you need to read words that have vowels. It must be hilarious to use GPS in Wales and hear the voice assistant try to say “at Cwmystwyth turn right”. Now if Cwmystwyth had vowels like it should then we all know this quaint little pig farming town is actually called

Cow-my-stew-eyeth. The Welsh simply couldn’t be bothered with writing the vowels, mainly because they left school early on Fridays.
spend hours watching high level programming such as Geordie Shore, in order to learn how to be as posh as the Brits. This has become such an obsession that they now have their own version inspirationally titled The Valleys. It begins with a stirring rendition of Land of Our Fathers sung by a boys’ choir, before cutting to late night drinking in an abandoned coal mine.
Number four – prepare for St David’s Day No matter what time of the year it is, the Welsh love to be ready with an extravagant costume of daffodils on St David’s Day. Teachers love to plan ahead and be ready for things. This annual celebration culminates in a feast of cawl and rarebit. Now cawl is a fancy word for left over stew with lashings of leeks. Rarebit is simply cheese on toast. Yip nothing says Wales more than I can’t be bothered cooking, so I have boiled up veges from the village of Cow-my-steweyeth, and because it has no taste, I’m going to smother toast in melted cheese and dip that in it when I eat.
Number two – planning their next holiday to Cardiff Cardiff to Wales is like Notre Dame to the French. Cardiff has electricity, internet and some rugby posts. This is a required hikoi for all Welshies and it is considered good fortune if you visit and it’s raining. The teachers love to organise themselves and talk fervently for hours about what type of umbrella to take and will they possibly get a glimpse of Warren Gatland or some rugby player named Jones.
Number three – watch re-runs of Geordie Shore Oh yes – the Welsh teachers are seriously jealous of their sophisticated neighbours, and
Number one – learn how to drive a digger and emigrate to Ashburton
to a scenic flight over Ashburton, floral art, pampering and beauty treatments as well as an evening dinner out. For mothers who are usually on call 24/7 it was a day of relaxation, fellowship and fun.
Altrusa members wish to thank all the businesses and members of the public who sponsored this day to make it such a success. Your contribution of gifts and time is greatly appreciated. Also, our grateful thanks go to
Facebook us! This is really the big one for Welsh teachers with free Friday afternoons. They spend hours in school chairs, with metre rulers as control sticks, practising how to dig trenches for shoddy fibre installs in Ashvegas. Having learnt their vowels, and wearing a St David’s Day costume without cheese stains, they go to Cardiff to sit their immigration exam. While a job rustling sheep in the Whangamongamonga Valley, or a job crushing coal in Desperate Town, West Coast is okay, they really want to make their mark digging through Wakanui silt loam. So far only two have been successful and ride the roads as king of the trenches. They sing songs of the coal mines in their cabs that would make Shirley Bassey cry. Should you happen to come across one, just don’t ask them if they know all their vowels. Peter Livingstone is the principal of Tinwald School. It’s a boy for royal couple AP The improbable love story between an American actress and a British royal took the best of all possible turns on Monday with the arrival of a healthy baby boy. The as-yet-unnamed baby arrived less than a year after Prince Harry wed Meghan Markle in a spectacular televised event on the grounds of Windsor Castle that was watched the world over. Meghan is now the Duchess of Sussex, but she still does things her own way: The couple bucked royal tradition by declining to say where the baby was born and opting not to come out to pose with the newborn just hours after the birth. Instead, an obviously overjoyed Harry emerged to tell the world – via its waiting TV cameras – that a baby had been born. It marked a moment the nation is likely to remember as a once-troubled boy undone by the death of his mother Princess Diana in 1997 car crash seemed giddy in his embrace of fatherhood. “This little thing is absolutely to die for,” the ginger-haired, bearded prince said. “I’m just over the moon.” The baby weighed 7 pounds, 3 ounces (3.26 kilograms) at birth and was born at 5.26am (4.26pm NZT on Monday). Harry said their son was a little bit overdue and that had given the royal couple more time to contemplate names. Harry promised that more details – such as the baby’s name – will be shared in the coming days.
McLean loses award A lifetime achievement award has been offered — and rescinded — for American Pie singer Don McLean. The 73-yearold announced on Monday that he was receiving the George and Ira Gershwin Award for Lifetime Musical Achievement, presented by the Student Alumni Association of University of California, Los Angeles. Past recipients included Julie Andrews, Ella Fitzgerald and Ray Charles. But the Portland Press Herald reports that the award was rescinded after the association was told of a domestic disturbance involving Don and Patrisha McLean in 2016.
Britain’s Prince Harry speaks at Windsor Castle, Windsor, England after his wife Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex gave birth to a baby boy. It is the first child for Harry and Meghan, who married a year ago. PHOTO AP Harry and the palace didn’t immediately provide details on whether the baby was born at a hospital or if it was a home birth. The royal couple had earlier said they wanted to keep details private. The infant is seventh in line to the British throne and is the eighth great-grandchild of 93-year-old Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest reigning monarch. It is a satisfying moment for the queen as the monarchy grows in popularity in part because of public affection for
Harry, his older brother Prince William, and their two wives, Meghan and Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge. Harry, the 34-year-old son of Prince Charles, said he was present at the birth. “It’s been the most amazing experience I could ever have possibly imagined,” he said. “How any woman does what they do is beyond comprehension. “We’re both absolutely thrilled and so grateful for all the love and support from everybody out there. It’s been
amazing, so we just wanted to share this with everybody,” he said. Word that the baby had been born was withheld while senior members of the royal family, including the queen, were told. Princess Diana’s family was also informed. Buckingham Palace said minutes before 2pm that Meghan had gone into labour (in fact the baby had already been born) and Harry emerged less than an hour later to announce the birth in person.
■■RUSSIA
Airliner heavy with extra fuel before takeoff AP A Russian airliner that took off from Moscow was airborne for just 28 minutes before returning to make an emergency landing while still heavy with unburned fuel, which then ignited after a rough touchdown. Flames quickly engulfed the aircraft, killing 41 of the 78 people aboard. A day after the horrifying accident at Sheremetyevo airport, Russian news media quoted the pilot, Denis Evdokimov, as saying he followed procedures for landing with excess weight. But the crew reportedly did not dump any fuel, which is common for flights that have to land soon after takeoff to prevent being overly heavy. The pilot said he was not certain why the plane landed hard. Video showed flames bursting from the jet’s underside as it touched down, then raging across the rear of
Employees of the Russian Emergency Situations work at the wreckage of Sukhoi SSJ100 aircraft of Aeroflot Airlines in Sheremetyevo airport, outside Moscow. PHOTO AP the Sukhoi SSJ100’s fuselage within seconds as the airliner bounced down the runway. “Everything happened right away, at lightning speed. There was a strong blow – my eyes almost popped out – a second was a little quieter, a third, and then smoke, and it started to burn immediately,” survivor
Marina Sitnikova was quoted as telling the magazine Snob. When the plane came to a halt, some of the people aboard plunged down inflatable slides deployed from the forward part of the plane. Some of those who escaped were carrying luggage, raising concerns that grabbing
their bags may have delayed an evacuation in which every second was critical. “I do not know what to say about people who ran out with bags. God is their judge,” survivor Mikhail Savchenko wrote on Facebook. Evdokimov said the plane had lost radio communications because of a lightning strike, but it was not clear if that precipitated the emergency landing. A flight attendant said there was a sharp flash soon after the Aeroflot flight took off, bound for the northern city of Murmansk. “We took off, got into a cloud, there was strong hail, and at that moment there was a pop and some kind of flash, like electricity,” flight attendant Tatiana Kasatnika said in a video posted on YouTube. Russia’s main investigative agency said both of the plane’s flight recorders — data and voice —were recovered from the charred wreckage.
Mistaken identity A leading photo agency has been left red-faced after they were unable to tell two iconic black comedians apart, confusing Chris Rock for fellow Hollywood funny guy Kevin Hart. The gaffe occurred when Getty Images snapped Rock and his partner Megalyn Echikunwoke together at the lavish Met Gala fashion event at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art yesterday. The only problem was they mistook Rock for Hart, tagging the latter in photo captions, and compounding the error by incorrectly assuming Echikunwoke was Hart’s wife, Eniko Parrish.
Schumer’s ‘royal’ baby Meghan Markle isn’t the only one celebrating a newborn. Comedian Amy Schumer has also given birth to her first child. Schumer and husband Chris Fischer’s son was born Sunday night according to her Instagram where she posted a photo of her family of three. In the caption she writes that at “10:55 pm last night. Our royal baby was born.” Since Schumer revealed her pregnancy, she has joked about what it is like to be expecting at the same time as the Duchess of Sussex. She even speculated in her Netflix special that they were to the day, the same amount of pregnant.

No need to raise capital – Craig
NZ dollar drops against Aussie after RBA keeps rates on hold NZME The New Zealand dollar fell sharply against the Australian dollar but was higher against the US dollar after the Reserve Bank of Australia left its cash rate unchanged at 1.5 per cent. The kiwi was trading at 93.95 Australian cents at 5pm yesterday in Wellington compared with 94.36 shortly before the RBA’s statement and 94.37 at 8am. It was trading at 66.12 US cents from 66.08 earlier yesterday. The trade-weighted index was at 72.15 points from 72.17. Peter Cavanaugh, the senior client advisor at Bancorp Treasury Services, says the market was close to 50/50 betting on either a rate cut or no change. “Therefore, somebody would be disappointed. Those that were
pleased, didn’t have much conviction and those who were disappointed probably went away thinking there will be another day,” Cavanaugh says. “The RBA’s statement reads neutral, very neutral and, if anything, has a slight positive bias.” The Australian central bank expects underlying inflation to reach 2 per cent in 2020 and to go a little higher. The labour market will remain strong and the “adjustment” in the housing market will continue, it believes. “You read all that and you say, why do they have to do anything,” Cavanaugh says. There had also been something for everyone in the Australian retail trade data released earlier yesterday, he says. The 0.3 per cent increase in the month of March came in above
expectations of a 0.2 per cent increase but the March quarter sales fell 0.1 per cent in inflation-adjusted terms, the first negative reading since the September quarter of 2012. Other Australian figures showed a higher-than-expected trade surplus of $A5.14 billion compared with expectations of $A4.48 billion. The market is now looking ahead to the Reserve Bank of New Zealand’s latest monetary policy statement due at 2pm today. The odds are slightly higher that the RBNZ will cut its official cash rate from 1.75 per cent to 1.5 per cent. The New Zealand dollar was trading at 50.38 British pence from 50.45, at 58.95 euro cents from 58.96, at 73.14 Japanese yen from 73.26, and at 4.4801 Chinese yuan from 4.4671.
Kernahan to leave Fletcher Building By Jenny Ruth NZME
Fletcher Building’s Michelle Kernahan is leaving the company at the end of July for a “new career challenge”. The company’s statement doesn’t say what her new position will be. Kernahan’s appointment as chief executive of Fletcher’s building products division was announced in July last year although she didn’t start in that role until November when former KiwiRail chief executive Peter Reidy took over the con-
struction division Kernahan had been managing since March 2017. Her appointment to head the building products division had all the hallmarks of a promotion given chief executive Ross Taylor had identified that division as a core business. It hasn’t been plain sailing at the building products division though. In February, Fletcher reported the division’s operating profit had fallen 10 per cent in the six months ended December. Kernahan’s stint heading the construction division can only be
described as tumultuous because her appointment came just as Fletcher was beginning to reveal that division was in trouble. Those losses, nearly $1 billion over 18 months, had been the result of unfavourable contracts the construction division had signed that put all the risks on Fletcher, rather than on the client, which in many cases was the government. Fletcher also announced yesterday that its chief information officer, John Bell, is retiring and plans to leave the company in the second half of 2019.

which will grow in value while in storage. “I liken it to a wine business or an agriculture business where harvesting takes place – the debt is roughly matched by inventory,” Craig said. “And inventory in terms of the honey industry actually increases in value. It doesn’t decrease, that’s a naturation thing, a bit like wine. I think there’s a general lack of appreciation of that.” Comvita’s borrowings had also gone up due to investment in assets and infrastructure, including a new warehouse and a 20 per cent stake in Apiter, a supplier of propolis in Uruguay. “The reality is we could raise capital, we don’t need to raise capital. We need to make profits so we can pay interest and pay dividends.” In February Comvita reported a first-half net loss of $2.7m as the planned shift to more formal sales channels was taking longer than expected. Analysts were underwhelmed by the performance and remain frustrated by profit guidance predictions being consistently wide of the mark.

The Comvita chairman is adamant the company can navigate through a third consecutive poor honey season without raising capital despite forecasting a $6 million loss. However, Neil Craig acknowledges investors are concerned after the natural health products company issued another profit warning on Monday. “Raising capital is an option for us, but it’s not necessary,” Craig told the Herald when asked about the pressure building on Comvita’s balance sheet amid high debt and falling earnings. “We have significant bank headroom … we said that at the half-year announcement because we know it’s a perceived issue. But it’s not an issue for the board and it’s not an issue for the company and it’s certainly not an issue for the bank.” Comvita shares fell 14.5 per cent on Monday to $3.58 after the company warned the market of an expected $6m loss for the year. The stock is now down 46 per
viewing its apiary business operations and under-performing assets, withdrawing from sites that have become non-viable due to overcrowding, and moving hives to where there are large tracts of manuka. While honey production per hive was higher than the previous year, poor weather patterns saw lower production overall. Comvita also blamed over-crowding of manuka sites with hives by competing beekeepers, “most notably” in Northland and East Cape. Comvita has invested heavily in its own plantations, which it says will produce “material quantities” of honey over the next two to three years. Craig said the company could not rely on a better season next year and simply needed to make profits. As at December 31 the company’s net bank borrowing was $104m, while total inventory had climbed to $120m. The company has borrowed to purchase high UMF manuka honey inventory, which it says provides the business with secure, high-quality honey supply

More than 300 mountain bikers spent six hours riding round and round a loop of the Ashburton River Trail on Sunday. They were taking part in the Mid Canterbury Mountain Bike Club’s annual six hour endurance race, which race organiser Tabitha Armour said was a great success and a whole lot of fun. All up the 304 riders completed 1179 laps of a 9.5km loop, for a grand total of 11,201kms ridden over the six-hour period. Some took part as teams while a few hardy competitors competed as individuals, tackling the entire six hours solo. All up 14 men completed the event solo, along with three women. Flynn Marshall completed the most laps in the solo men’s junior section, with 14 laps, while Olly Pearce completed the same number of laps to top the solo men’s open section. In the veteran men’s solo section, Andrew Beale finished on top with 11 laps just ahead of Peter Page, who also completed 11 laps, while in the solo women’s section Haley Van Leeuwen came out on top with 13 laps. Sixteen laps was the winning number in the teams category, with team Shotgun winning the men’s section with 16 laps ahead of team Oamaru Honda, which also completed 16 laps. Rapid Thigh Movement was the winning team for the women, with 13 laps, ahead
of BIGALS, while the top two teams in the mixed section both completed 14 laps, with Gears and Beers just winning out. The family section was won by team Adrenaline Rush 2.0 with 14 laps, with Where’s the B Line? second. Two school sections were well supported, with team AIS Vegan Nachos winning the Year 7 and 8 section with 13 laps, while team Fast and Furious won the Year 9 to 13 section with 15 laps. The majority of the riders taking part came from around Canterbury, with 42 per cent of the field locals and 31 per cent coming from Christchurch, but they did get a few entries from further afield, including one visitor from the United Kingdom and another from Wellington. Armour said it was a great day, although the decision to move it forward on the calendar by a week this year didn’t pay off, and next year the event would be back on Mothers’ Day, as it had been in previous years. Armour said the event – which formed part of the Wheels Week itinerary – had been moved because people had said if it wasn’t on Mothers’ Day they’d be free to head along and help out. But they didn’t get any extra helpers, and unlike the events they’d held on Mothers’ Day, the 2019 field didn’t hit capacity. All proceeds of the event would go towards resurfacing work at the western end of the mountain bike track and adding in some optional technical lines.

Bucks on the cusp of Eastern finals AP Giannis Antetokounmpo had 39 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Bucks to a 113-101 victory over the Boston Celtics in Game 4 of their second-round playoff series yesterday and move Milwaukee within one win from its first trip to the Eastern Conference finals since 2001. “Giannis, it’s hard to find the words (for) what he does for our team, both ends of the court,” Milwaukee coach Mike Budenholzer said. “He’s special, but he’s very hungry. He wants more, and he’s playing that way.” The Bucks have won three straight since losing the opener of
the best-of-seven series at home and can eliminate the Celtics in Game 5 at home tomorrow. They have not reached the East finals since the 2001 team fell to Philadelphia in seven games. Boston beat Milwaukee in seven games in the first round last year, but will have to win three straight – two on the road – to return. “It takes a lot of mental fortitude, it takes a lot of mental toughness, and it reveals a lot,” Celtics coach Brad Stevens said. “I’m looking forward to that challenge.” One game after Antetokounmpo was two assists shy of a triple-double, he scored 17 points with seven rebounds in the fourth
quarter to help the Bucks pull away. George Hill, who scored 15 points, and Pat Connaughton, who had nine points and 10 rebounds, again led the Bucks bench, which outscored Boston’s 32-7. “Yeah that was killer,” Stevens said. “Their bench comes in, they’ve had no dropoff. Connaughton’s been excellent. George Hill’s been absolutely tremendous.” In what might be his last home game for the Celtics, Kyrie Irving scored 23 points with 10 assists. Irving, who can become a free agent this summer, left the court to a lone fan shouting at him, “Don’t leave!”

Ashburton College A’s fight to stay in the top flight of the Canterbury secondary schools’ SuperNet competition could not have got off to a better start. They headed to Christchurch on Sunday and came home with a 29-20 win over Darfield High School and a 32-16 win over Cashmere High School under their belts, and this afternoon they’ll head to Christchurch to take on Rangi Ruru where they hope to make it three-from-three. Finishing in the bottom three of the top section of SuperNet last year meant that before this season’s competition got under way, Ashburton College A were one of the sides that had to prove themselves if they wanted to stay up. The bottom three teams from the top section and the top three from the B section were set to play each other in a qualifying round, with the top three at the end of that set to feature in the A section this year. It’s ended up being five teams though, due to the withdrawal of Ellesmere College. That left Ashburton College, Rangi Ruru and Kaiapoi High School as the bottom three from the top flight last season, and two of the top teams from the B section last year, Darfield and Cashmere, to fight it out. College coach Kaye Kennedy said her team has been playing well, but Rangi Ruru won’t be easy. “They will probably be our toughest competition in this qualifying round, so that could be a tough game for us and we would love to come away with a win,” Kennedy said. She was happy with her side’s two wins on Sunday, particularly with how many goals they’d scored in shortened games of four eight minute quarters. “To score 30 goals is pretty good,” Kennedy said. The wins gave the Ashburton side a bit of breathing space and put them in a strong position to retain their spot in the top grade. After Rangi Ruru today, they have just Kaiapoi High School left to play on Saturday.
Basketballers get first win on the board Mid Canterbury claimed the first win of their return to top level men’s basketball in Christchurch on Sunday. The Mid Canterbury men’s team fronted up against the Celebration Lions in the division one competition in Christchurch and came away with an impressive 71-59 win, to bounce back well from their first up loss to Gators. Mid Canterbury started well against Celebration, looking to fast break at every opportunity, and that combined with some
solid man-to-man defence saw them out to an 18–10 lead which the Lions managed to close back to two by quarter-time. Mid Canterbury got on an early roll in the second quarter and the Lions called a time out, which slowed the scoring with both sides struggling to find the net. Their defence intensified and they sped up the game, which helped them to extend their lead to 10 at the end of the second quarter, 38–28. Mid Canterbury kept their work
rate up, but the Lions weren’t going away, and they kept snipping away at the lead. A good finish to the third quarter enabled Mid Canterbury to stretch the lead to 12 points, and in the final quarter Mid Canterbury continued to run at the Lions and eventually ran out comfortable winners. Pip Johnston had another good all-round game, leading the way for Mid Canterbury with 23 points (four 3 pointers). He controlled play and regular-
ly hit the lane runners on the fast break. Nick Fechney was also in top form. Not only was he a regular on the end of Johnston’s passes, his all-round play was strong and he finished with 20 points. Mid Canterbury coach Brian Kerr said overall the work rates of all players was excellent. “We played man-to-man for most of the game, and the pleasing aspect was the intensity levels,” Kerr said. “Help defence was good and
the boxing out on the defensive boards was a lot better, restricting second shots. “Overall the offence flowed better than it had the previous week. “Free throw percentages went up to 61 per cent and again we had 31 shots from the line highlighting our willingness to drive.” Kerr said Mid Canterbury made improvements from last week, and while there was still work to be done on refining plays, things were certainly heading in the right direction.

■■OPINION
Getting to the business end
I
t’s hard to believe, but this weekend the final round of the combined country senior rugby competition will take to fields around Canterbury Country. The new-look competition aimed to shorten what was a heck of a long season and cut out the need for mid-week games, and it’s certainly done that. It feels like only yesterday I was talking to the coaches of our five local sides for the first time, and asking what we could expect from their teams in 2019. But now, we know. Right from the start, everyone said that the competition was going to be tight and bonus points could be vital come the business end of the competition, and they were right. There’s a number of different scenarios which could play out on Saturday. The new three-pool format sees the top two teams from each of those pools go through to the top eight play-offs, with the remaining two spots being wildcard places which will be given to the next two best teams
from a combined leaderboard. At this stage, there’s just one Mid Canterbury team safe in a top eight position, and that’s Southern. They’ve got 27 points and sit atop the pool A leaderboard with Darfield, and have a chance to finish as the competition’s team to beat on Saturday. Darfield arguably has the tougher ask of the two today, with defending champions Waihora their opposition, while Kaiapoi has the job of trying to beat Southern, at Hinds, during their jubliee weekend. Southern doesn’t really need any more motivation than that, and from what I saw at Hinds on Saturday when they demolished Hornby 62-17, they’ll be hard to beat. When it comes to motivation though, Waihora’s also got plenty. Their season pretty much goes on the line on Saturday against Darfield. If Waihora don’t win, there’s a chance that they might miss out on the finals. At the moment, Waihora are sitting in the first wildcard spot,
Erin Tasker SPORTS REPORTER
but there’s a couple of teams within striking range that have what should be an easy five points up for the taking on Saturday. So Waihora will be looking to control their own destiny and not leave anything up to chance. Among the teams quietly hoping that Waihora don’t get up against Darfield, are two Mid Canterbury sides – Rakaia and Celtic. Rakaia are the team that lost to Waihora in that final in 2018 and they’re eager for another crack, but they did not help their own cause by losing a game they should have won against Ohoka on Saturday which meant, while they were still a playoffs chance, they need to beat Southbridge with a bonus point on Saturday and rely on a few
other results to play into their hands to stand a chance. It’s a similar story for Celtic. The Mid Canterbury Rugby Watters Cup champions from 2018 have been one of the surprise packages this season, and they could also nab one of those wildcards depending on a few outcomes on Saturday. Early in the season, having lost the majority of their squad from 2018 and with a reasonable list of injuries, Celtic were really struggling to even fill their squad, but they’ve managed to not just get by, but get by well. On Saturday they surpassed 60 points in beating Oxford, and if they can beat Lincoln in the final round with a bonus point, they could potentially make the play-offs. Two teams that won’t be in the top eight though, are Methven and Hampstead. Both had the potential to be contenders in the combined competition, and with that now not happening they’re turning their attention to what could well be one of the most intriguing Watters Cup battles we’ve seen in a while.
In brief Smith out for Landers? Highlanders and All Black fullback Ben Smith may have played his last game for the Highlanders. Smith has been ruled out for six to eight weeks with a high hamstring injury. Smith (32) picked up the injury in the last 10 minutes of the side’s draw with the Chiefs on Saturday. Highlanders assistant coach Glenn Delaney confirmed Smith was out for this period and said it was a blow to Smith and the Highlanders team. The side would look to play Matt Faddes or Josh McKay at fullback. - NZME
Tahuriorangi re-signs All Blacks and Chiefs halfback Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi has announced he has re-signed with New Zealand Rugby until 2021. 24-year-old Tahuriorangi, a product of Rotorua Boys’ High School, has long been recognised as a talented player with an exceptional pass. Tahuriorangi headed south to New Plymouth making his provincial debut in 2015 for Taranaki following the success of the New Zealand Under 20’s campaign. Tahuriorangi has played three times for the All Blacks, more than 30 Super Rugby games for the Chiefs and 31 matches for Taranaki. - NZME
Folau stoush rolls on Rugby Australia has come under fire for its handling of the protracted Israel Folau saga, as the disgraced Wallabies star’s code of conduct hearing dragged into a fourth day. It’s been almost a month since Folau’s homophobic social media post triggered widespread reaction, including his employer’s promise to tear up his lucrative four-year contract. Many fans and team-mates have also come out in support of Folau, with former All Blacks winger Inga Tuigamala saying Folau should be “commended” and that his views should be “put in perspective”. - NZME
Draws an anomaly The 12th round of matches in Super Rugby produced a modern statistical oddity: two matches which ended in ties. The championshipleading Crusaders scored and converted a try after the siren to draw 21-21 with the Sharks and the Chiefs rallied from 12-28 to draw 31-31 with the Highlanders. The results highlight the fact that ties have become a rarity in modern rugby. Matches are typically higher-scoring and five- or seven-point tries tend to produce more disparity on the scoreboard than when threeor four-point tries fostered closer games. For instance, the great Ireland lock Willie John McBride played in 80 test matches between 1962 and 1975, of which 13 ended drawn. - AP

Rakaia’s winning run continued with a 69-7 win over Mt Somers on Friday night, while Collegiate also remained unbeaten with a 37-7 win over Allenton. Meanwhile Celtic picked up their second win, beating Hampstead 33-17 and Methven beat Southern 34-15 on Thursday night. The two mid-week games were due to the opening of duck shooting on Saturday. There are genuine fears that bars and restaurants in host cities could run dry of a rugby fan staple – beer – during the Rugby World Cup in Japan later this year. Concerns have been raised at in Sapporo, Hokkaido and Oita which could host the bulk of the expected 400,000 fans to the tournament that runs from September to November. Wholesalers and restaurant owners have admitted the prospect of beer shortages was “a realistic problem”. - NZME

bury female drivers have shown in the event. She says it’s important to the club to celebrate the achievements and support of all females in the harness racing community. “The aim of the day is to highlight women in our industry. “We want to recognise and promote not just the female drivers but also the trainers, owners, stablehands and partners that are
dedicated to harness racing and are great role models for the next generation,” said Shand. This year’s driving lineup features Kimberly Butt, Katie Cox, Ineka Lee, Loren Lester, Amber Lethaby, Mikayla Lewis, Laura McKay, Sarah O’Reilly, Sam Ottley, Ashleigh Stewart, Olivia Thornley, Amanda Tomlinson, Kerryn Tomlinson, Sheree Tomlinson and Jessica Young.
The mother and daughter combination of Amanda, Kerryn and Sheree Tomlinson will add to the spectacle on Mother’s Day, being the first time a mother and her two daughters have competed. A day that the club has used over the years to salute women in racing, this year they will be hosting a Mother’s Day Pink Ribbon breakfast in the venue’s Grey Way Lounge.
Sarah O’Reilly will be at the Mother’s Day meeting on Sunday.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 19): Successful move of the day: Give your energy to those who give back. And even though it’s not always possible or advisable to love only those who love you, etc., today it’s your ticket to heart-happiness. TAURUS (Apr 20-May 20): Even though you may feel clueless as to what is your next move, your intention to avoid trouble and steer yourself in a healthful and supportive direction will lead you into becoming who you want to be. GEMINI (May 21-Jun 21): You’ll be put in a position today. Make it easy for present-you by saying yes. Make it easy for future-you by saying no. The second way is better, causing you less stress overall, but of course, it’s harder. CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 22): When you’re doing something for the first time, it seems to take a lot longer. The novelty changes your perception of time and makes moments stretch. Break the routine. Variety is a must for a memorable life. LEO (Jul 23-Aug 22): There are a lot of things that mistakenly pass for gratitude. Manners, humility, deference – they’re all fine, but they are not gratitude. Gratitude is a type of joy. If it doesn’t feel joyful, then it’s not gratitude. VIRGO (Aug 23-Sep 22): Get into the kind of relationships you can handle. You know what you have time for and what you don’t. You know what feels easy and what seems right but somehow isn’t quite. Trust yourself. LIBRA (Sep 23-Oct 23): You have a problem. Other people have the same problem. If you can solve it for you, you can solve it for others. Knowing it’s bigger than you will give you motivation to dig in and try harder for the answer. SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 21): “No judgment but...” is one way judgy sentences start. If you find yourself judging, even if only mentally, then add an “or not” to the end of what you were thinking. Because the opposite idea may be just as true. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): An unhelpful idea that’s been engrained in you since you were small will be tricky to free yourself from, but that’s exactly what you need to do to move to a lighter mode of being. CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19): The different kinds of inspiration will compound. Intellectual inspiration will ignite physical exuberance; social inspiration will effervesce into spiritual joy. AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): For a conflict to resolve, one person has to soften in the name of resolution. That person is automatically the bigger person, as it takes a great spirit to be humble. PISCES (Feb 19-Mar 20): Your learning process can be very mysterious. Maybe it feels like nothing is clicking in, but keep exposing yourself to the material you want to absorb. When it does click in, it will be sudden and magical.

Huge day on speedway track By Erin Tasker

New Zealand titles went on the line during a massive two days on the track at the Ashburton Speedway on Saturday and Sunday. The annual national title weekend formed part of the Wheels Week festivities, and organisers couldn’t have asked for a better weekend, with clear skies and good crowds.
The New Zealand ministock and production titles were up for grabs, along with the six-shooter and New Zealand modifieds title. The six-shooter title went the way of Gene Spooner, with Josh Buchanan second and Peter Keith third, while the modifieds leaderboard was topped by Michael Gourley, with Andrew Naven second and Jake Ackers third.
David Filius won the production saloons title, with Whetu Taewa second and Ian Clark third, while the race for the adult ministock title was tight, with Paul Archbold just taking it out ahead of second placed Shaun Hayman, with Alan Finch third. Youth ministocks were also in action, with Laura Weir claiming the youth ministocks A title ahead of Brook McPherson in
second and Korban Bright in third. The youth ministocks B title was won by Jordanlee Paratene by just one point ahead of Ben Smart, with Adam Evans in third spot. The two-day speedway event was one of the feature events of weekend one of Ashburton’s annual Wheels Week festivities, and this weekend spectators will turn
their attention from the track to the road. The Ashburton Car Club will host its highly-popular annual Street Sprints event in the Riverside Industrial Park, with racing in the 30th anniversary event set to start on Saturday morning. It will run through until late Sunday afternoon, when the top two drivers will complete one last lap to find the 2019 champion.
