Mid Cantabrians catch panic-buying bug By Susan Sandys

Coronavirus is nowhere near pandemic levels in New Zealand, but many people have caught the panic-buying bug. Yesterday large bags of flour were in short supply at Ashburton New World, and there appears to be no hand sanitiser on shelves at either Countdown or New World.

And of course, there are gaps on the toilet paper shelves. Countdown New Zealand general manager merchandise Steve Mills said there was plenty of food and toilet paper available across the country and there was no need for customers to stockpile. “We work with some great local suppliers who are manufac-

turing toilet paper right here in New Zealand, and our suppliers are confident there is plenty to go around. We have a lot of stock coming through the network and going into stores each day.” Countdown was working with its suppliers to manage the increased demand for hand sanitiser, which was in high demand globally, and limit it to two per

customer. Foodstuffs head of corporate affairs Antoinette Laird said shopper behaviour had largely returned to normal following last weekend’s flurry of activity. “We continue to encourage customers to shop normally, our teams have everything in hand and if people purchase as usual there are no issues,” she said.

Compared to may parts of New Zealand, the Ashburton District has been something of a sleepy hollow over the past year in terms of growth in house prices. Sales values have shifted just 2.8 per cent since February 2019 compared to many areas south of Ashburton where price growth has been well over 10 per cent. The slowest spot in the south, however, has been the country’s price star, Queenstown Lakes, where prices have shifted less than 1 per cent. In February, the average value of a house sold in the Ashburton District was $366,408. Along with Queenstown and Ashburton, Selwyn was the other low price growth spot in the South Island. Peninsular and coastal Dunedin at 21.4 per cent and Invercargill, 19.3 per cent, saw the strongest price lift over the past year in the South Island. In line with stronger growth in areas with traditionally lower average sales prices, the greatest lift in North Island prices came in Whanganui, 29.1 per cent and Rangitikei, 31.9 per cent. Eleven areas of New Zealand now have an average house price that tops $1 million, with Auckland city east the most expensive place to buy at $1.568 million. The only million dollar price patches outside the greater Auckland area are Wellington west at $1.011 million and Queenstown Lakes at $1.212 million. The average selling price for a house in New Zealand in February was $722,475, up 5.3 per cent on February 2019.

Led astray with bird flu leaflets By Susan Sandys

Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon was surprised to be given a bird flu leaflet from 2014 when he arrived off a plane from Singapore. He said health officials have been handing out the advisory leaflets to alighting international passengers at airports this week. “What’s clear from the leaflets is that they’re not related to COVID-19 at all,” Falloon said. As well as him receiving one as he landed at Christchurch Airport on Saturday, a contact of his had received one upon landing in Auckland on Thursday night. From the date on the leaflets of August 2014, they were printed when there was an outbreak of bird flu in China, and listed symptoms match up with bird flu rather than coronavirus, he noted. For example they advise passengers to seek medical advice if they have bruising or bleeding, or a skin rash. “The danger is that people coming in with coronavirus will read the leaflet with the incorrect symptoms and think they don’t have it,” he said.

Falloon granted that much of the response to coronavirus from health officials had been “good”. “The 14-day isolation programmes they’ve been running have helped keep the number of infections and incursions low compared to other countries,” he said. “But recycling leaflets which describe different symptoms and an entirely different disease is downright dangerous. It needlessly increases the risk of spreading coronavirus all for the sake of the cost of some new leaflets.” And while the leaflet has the Healthline phone number, it omits Healthline’s dedicated coronavirus number, established last month, of 0800 358 5453. Health Minister David Clark was questioned by National’s Health spokesperson Michael Woodhouse in Parliament about the issue this week, but rejected the claim. Yesterday morning Clark’s office referred the Guardian to the Ministry of Health for comment, but the ministry was not able to get back by deadline late yesterday afternoon.

Rubbish removal makeover for Ashton Beach By Heather Mackenzie

Ashton Beach had a rubbish removal makeover yesterday, thanks to 40 Ashburton Borough School pupils. Ashburton Borough School teacher John Hooper said the school made it their mission to rid the beach of rubbish as part their learning around Kaitiakitanga, which means guardianship and protection of the environment. “The first week in March is Sea Week, so that’s a nice fit for this project. Along with this we also run a poetry competition with a sea environmental theme too,” Hooper said. “We have been coming here for around 15 years now and I think we have only missed doing it once or twice in all that time. The

students are learning to look after their environment and the community also wins through having a litter-free area to enjoy.” High on the list of rubbish collected was all kinds of plastic, with beer bottles and broken glass coming in a close second. Hooper said the plastic items had blown down to the beach from the nearby Ashburton Riverbed. Plastic wrap, general packaging and fizzy drink containers were the main culprits. The general consensus among the students and their seven parent helpers was there seemed to be a lot more old car parts, including a burned-out car, and waste metal, than in previous years. Hooper said they will recycle or reuse as much as possible from

Three other greenie shields are given out at the school via the greenie club. The power shields, a senior and junior award, go to the class that saved the most power, with the leaf shield going to the class that has done the best job sorting their rubbish and recycling bins. Hooper is passionate about the environment and said he is proud of the student-led programmes at the school and how they set their attendees up for a lifetime of caring about the natural world around them.

A local support group for families of prisoners has been established by a woman who found no support when her son was arrested and immediately placed in prison. The PALS Support Group for Mid Canterbury was officially launched on Wednesday evening at a gathering of local community group leaders. The group has been started for family, friends and other “frontline” people that have a connection with someone in prison to get support and guidance in a non-judgemental and friendly environment. Facilitator Bronnie McKenna shared her story about her son being in the corrections system and how in the days following his arrest, she was unable to find help from anywhere, including a helpline that turned her down saying they do not assist families of prisoners. She eventually turned to social media to find answers for the questions she had. What she found, however, was a negative area that blamed the system and lacked respect.

“The number one focus for us is to respect the victims and their families and the corrections system,” she said. “It is not just a way to slag off the system.” At the launch, PILLARS founder Verna McFelin, who set the groundwork for groups like this, spoke about what the organisation she founded more than 30 years ago does around supporting families and children impacted by having at least one parent in the corrections system. “We know on any one day there are around 23,000 children nationwide that have at least one parent in prison,” she said. McFelin said those children are 10 times more likely to end up in prison than other children, often experience mental health issues and do not speak about the experience of having a parent in prison for fear of being bullied and ostracised. She said the impact of having a parent in the corrections system can start right from the point of the arrest and for that reason PILLARS is currently working with police in North Canterbury around protocols for what to do

when children are present when they are arresting someone. “I spoke with my 40-year-old daughter the other day, she was eight or 10 at the time of my husband’s arrest and she hid under the bed and I had to drag her from under there,” she said. “When talking to her about it she couldn’t remember it at all, she had wiped it from her mind and it is traumatic.” PILLARS also runs a mentoring programme with children of prisoners, with volunteer mentors pairing up with the children for a minimum of one year to help try and break the cycle of children of prisoners being more likely to end up in prison themselves. “We have had 2000 children through the mentoring programme and, so far, only four have ever come to the attention of the police,” she said. “The mentors have to sign on for a minimum of a year, but they average around three-and-a-half years because they love those kids.” PILLARS also runs a number of services in corrections facilities across the country for helping parents on the inside learn best

how to connect with their children on visits. There is also a helpline available that provides support and advice, and a website for children to use that walks them through a prison and answers any questions they may have about it. The organisation also conducted a large-scale survey in the early 2010s and from that has developed a number of resources, including a best practice manual and a number of toolkits for professionals on how to deal with families and children with a family member in prison. “We have a school toolkit that can equip teachers for how to deal with children that have a parent in prison,” she said. “We also have one for lawyers. “There is also a checklist for doctors and health professionals as we have often found that needs of the children are not being met when they are in situations like this and we advocate them getting full health check-ups.” The first PALS support group session will be held at the BASE Youth Centre on Burnett Street on March 16. McKenna said they chose that

location as it was a nice casual setting for people to enjoy a cuppa and a chat and they could bring their children with them if they were not able to arrange childcare. McKenna, who is a restorative justice facilitator, hoped the word spread about the group as much as possible as it was difficult to identify families that were impacted. They were often quiet about it due to the shame associated with having a loved one in prison, while services like corrections were unable to give exact numbers of families impacted. “We believe there are tens of families impacted and we are working on the idea that there are between 30 and 50 families in the district,” she said. The group has been launched thanks to a grant of $8000 from Advance Ashburton and their executive officer Sandy Wood said they were amazed at the need for the group in Ashburton and were more than happy to support it. ig city, lots happening, that’s how former Mount Hutt College student Daniel Pannett views life in London. Based in the English capital, Pannett has spent the past 12 months carting his camera gear around Europe, working alongside Newshub’s Europe correspondent Lloyd Burr, filming globally significant news stories or those with a New Zealand twist for TV3. Pannett’s journey to London began way back in 2009, set in motion by spending two years studying TV production at what was referred to then as the Christchurch Aoraki Polytech. While on the course, Pannett was lucky enough to be offered work experience with TV3. That mean going out with film crews, carrying tripods and generally doing what he was told. He is grateful for this chance as it provided him with a foot in the door at the TV station that would lead on to bigger things down the track. 2012 rolled around and Pannett got a job working for the Christchurch-based business Broadcast Media. This job was yet another major milestone moment in his career. Pannett attributes much of his present success to what he learned working for company owners Joe and Angela Morgan. Broadcast Media is a production company, covering news and current affairs, as well as making corporate videos and TV shows. A big part of the job was covering breaking news like fires, snowstorms and car accidents — a steep learning curve for the young camera operator. Pannett knows the value of learning from being in the field and the experience to be gained through coming into contact with unique situations and dealing with all sorts of different people. “I learnt so much from Joe and I think it is so important when you are starting out to have someone like that who can just coach you through all the little things that are impossible to

No longer just carrying tripods and staying out of the way, Pannett proved himself to be an accomplished camera operator and in 2019 TV3 offered him the “Europe camera gig” as he calls it. Things can get pretty hectic for team Pannett and Burr because they cover all of the United Kingdom and Europe for Newshub. It is up to them to make sure they cover all relevant stories. Pannett says the key to not missing anything is planning well in advance. “We cover lots of sport, politics, the royal family etc, but we also do a lot of planning. Looking ahead a few months at a time, making sure we are not missing anything that is coming up.” Planning is not only vital for

covering the events themselves, but to guarantee Pannett and Burr access when they get there, as it’s up to them to apply for media accreditation and book flights, accommodation and transport. Hopping around Europe filming famous people and world-changing events sounds all very exciting and, to a certain extent, Pannett admits is it, however, the flipside of the job is long days, dealing with different time zones and broken sleep. “Because of the time zones, our live crosses back to NZ for Newshub live at 6pm are at 5am UK time, which can be tough especially in a London winter.” “Our days would usually involve shooting a story during the day, then edit, send the story off, get some sleep and then up at 3.30am to head to our live cross position wherever it may be, depending on the story. It could be outside Downing Street or

Westminster or outside Buckingham palace or wherever we may be around the UK or Europe.” Due to the amount of time he and Burr have to spend in each other’s company, Pannett knows it is vital to get along. He said they spend a lot of time together working and travelling, all on very little sleep, and if you couldn’t communicate properly it just wouldn’t work. Thankfully that is not the case for the Newshub team, as they knew each other before Pannett landed in London. “We were great mates before I moved here as we worked in Wellington together. We haven’t had a fight over here yet.” Of course it’s not all 3am starts and eating 2-minute noodles on the run. Pannett has certainly experienced many once-in-alifetime moments during the past 12 months. Being live and up close at monumental events like Meghan

and Harry’s wedding, the 75th D-Day anniversary and the fire at Notre Dame in Paris is all mind-boggling stuff, but Pannett reckons his career highlight to date is still remains flying to America to cover the 2016 election of President Trump. “Patrick Gower and I spent a few weeks in Cleveland and Philadelphia for the Republican and Democratic conventions.” Gower and Pannett then went back a few months later for the November election. While there the pair took off on road trips around Florida and Pennsylvania, attending a few Trump and Clinton rallies. “It was pretty incredible to be in America during that time.” Pannett still has another 12 months to go on his European contract. What happens after that he’s not too sure. “I will see what happens, but will keep doing what I am doing at this stage.”

Not quite a Lotto win, but it’ll do By Heather Mackenzie

Dave Brown, from Waikouaiti, was among the hundreds of campervan owners attending the Ashburton Motorhome Show last weekend. Knowing the large Ashburton event was the place to sell his selfbuilt campervan, Brown threw a few vital bits and pieces in the van and headed north for the three day show. After finding his spot at the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds on Friday, he knew the next thing on

his to-do-list was to purchase a Lotto ticket. The thought of winning $50 million was just too hard to ignore. Setting off on his e-bike Brown arrived at 6.05pm to find the shop had closed at 6pm. Long story short it took another two trips to fins a Lotto outlet before he finally held a potentially winning ticket in his hand. “After all those trips into the town to get the Lotto ticket I didn’t win anyway, I should have stayed in the van and saved myself the trouble.”

Brown’s dream of a $50 million lifestyle for him and his wife Reywa may not have worked out, but there was good news, when a couple from Ashburton agreed to buy his van. “I had a feeling they wanted to buy it when they first looked at it on Saturday, so it wasn’t a big surprise when they came back in Sunday and said ‘yes’.” Selling something you built and designed yourself and travelled over 10,000km a year in is bound to cause a mixture of emotions, however Brown said he and Rey-

wa had agreed a caravan was a better option heading into the future and, yes, Brown has built it himself. Brown, a keen fisherman, said that he can quite happily spend 13 hours a day on a riverbank, but his wife Reywa doesn’t share his enthusiasm, so she needs an independent vehicle to head off and explore the surroundings. “I will be sad to see it go, but we have decided that a caravan and attached car will suit our needs better now.” The couple purchasing the van

Over the eighteen months it took Brown to complete the build he thought of everything, from the large, water-sealed shower to the nearly 2m high roof and a large gas-operated fridge, nothing was overlooked. For Brown one of the most important things in the van is a comfortable, good sized bed. “In the last van we had the bed was a three-quarter one and it was too small for us and once the dog decided he need to be on the bed too, nobody got any sleep.”

Former Greens Party leader dies unexpectedly By RNZ Former Green Party co-leader Jeanette Fitzsimons has died after suffering a “massive stroke” in hospital after a fall on her Coromandel farm on Thursday morning. As tributes flow from across the political landscape, Fitzsimons’ husband, Harry Parke, said her death was totally unexpected. “Yesterday [Thursday} morning she was out on the farm doing stuff, she had a bit of a fall and finally ended up in Thames Hospital where she had a massive stroke and died at 9.45pm last night – very peacefully I might add. “The day before, she was using a chainsaw – that’s the sort of person she is. She worked a lot harder than I ever did. I was totally in awe of her. “Fortunately we both had very much the same convictions about what needed changing in the planet and we had a very close relationship.” Fitzsimons became the co-leader of the Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand in 1995, and when the party joined the Alliance led by Jim Anderton’s New Labour Party, she took on the deputy leadership role. After the first MMP election in 1996, she entered Parliament as a list MP for the Alliance but it wasn’t long before strains appeared in the grouping. She felt herself left out of its decision-making and the Green Party itself was increasingly unhappy with the Alliance’s direction. The agreement to send New Zealand troops to Afghanistan in the United States-led so-called war on terror was a step too far for the Greens and they left the Alliance. Fitzsimons won the Coromandel seat for the Greens in 1999, the country’s first elected Green MP and was disappointed when she lost it in the following election, although the party remained in Parliament due to its party vote.

Former Green Party leader Jeanette Fitzsimons. She and her co-leader Rod Donald were strong influences in the change in public perception of the party as a group of sandal-wearing tree-huggers. Parke said Fitzsimons was “instrumental” in getting the Green Party up and running in the 1990s. More recently, her focus had been on climate change. “She fought really hard to get people to accept you can’t keep growing the economy and stop climate change. It just seems people don’t want to hear that.” Fitzsimons was known for never raising her voice in the House and never responding to barbs thrown around in Parliament. “She strongly believed that never got you anywhere, that all it did was take the focus off the subject you were talking about and your energy needed to be totally on what you were trying to achieve. I think she held that up admirably,” Parke said. “She never let her emotions get in the way of what needed to be said and what needed to be done. “She totally lived her convictions and there was no way that anyone could say she didn’t live up to what she was saying.”

In 2018, she addressed the Green Party’s two-day annual meeting, and later told reporters what the Green Party had achieved after 10 months in Government was impressive but the caucus should be careful not to get the “speed wobbles”. “James’ [Shaw’s] account of what has been achieved by three and a half ministers in Government is pretty impressive and I’m delighted by the portfolios we got and the work the ministers are doing,” she said. “There’s always the risk at this stage of getting the speed wobbles. There’s always a tension between keeping the Government going smoothly and getting a lot of achievements from ministerial work and staying true to our original kaupapa.” But Fitzsimons said the Greens’ support for the Electoral (Integrity) Amendment Bill was a low point. “It’s wrong, it denies MPs’ basic freedom of speech, freedom of association, freedom of thought. It’s contrary to the Bill of Rights and i’s contrary to our policy.” Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said Fitzsimons was a “steward of

the New Zealand environmental political movement”. “During her 14 years in Parliament she was an early voice for action on issues now considered mainstream like climate change, the deteriorating state of our water and clean energy.” Ardern noted that Fitzsimons once polled as the most trustworthy party leader in New Zealand – “a fitting endorsement of her kind, caring and passionate brand of politics”. “New Zealand has lost someone completely and utterly driven by values, who embodied the notion of leaving this place better than they found it. Jeanette did that.” In a statement, the Green Party said it was mourning Fitzsimons with the “heaviest of hearts”. Its co-leader Marama Davidson said Fitzsimons was “a taonga of the green movement”. “To me, she feels like a bastion of what we believe in, and a signpost for what we want for this world.” Davidson said Fitzsimons left behind a remarkable legacy. Fitzsimons was the first female co-leader of the Green Party. Jeanette, thank you so much for everything you have done, for standing so staunch and strong for the planet. We will miss you so much.” Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters said on Twitter he was “very sad” to hear of Fitzsimons’ death. “She was someone who had her principles and stuck to them.” Fitzsimons was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2010.

Dunedin doctor sentenced to 19 years in jail NZME The doctor who murdered Dunedin teen Amber-Rose Rush has been sentenced to 19 years in jail without parole. Venod Skantha was sentenced at the High Court in Dunedin yesterday afternoon for Rush’s murder. On November 27 last year, a High Court jury found 32-year-old Skantha guilty of murdering Rush. He was also found guilty of four charges of threatening to kill – related to the Crown’s star witness against him. Rush’s father Amber-Rose Shane spoke outside court after the sentencing. “It’s pretty hard to say but the

family would like to say thank you to the judge, the prosecution, and to everybody,” he said. “The life sentence is not what we would have asked for – we would have asked for more, but it is what it is. “From all of us we’d like to thank the country ... myself and my children will just go on and be strong together.” Crown lawyer Robin Bates pushed for a minimum of 19 to 21 years imprisonment at yesterday’s sentencing. He told the court the murder was committed in an attempt to avoid detection or prosecution. “Murder was essentially a means of silencing Amber – to stop her making reports to police

and his employers.” But defence lawyer Jonathan Eaton says Skantha maintains his innocence. “He extends his sincerest condolences to the Rush family – as he did at the time of her death.” Eaton says Skantha will be appealing his sentence on the basis there’s been a miscarriage of justice. Justice Gerald Nation says the murder was particularly callous – and he would take this into account in the sentence. “All murders are callous to a degree … [but you] burned your clothes and toasted marshmallows over the flames, then feigned sorrow to her mother. “But that’s not what made it cal-

lous to a high level. What made it callous to a high level is the efficient and clinical way Amber-Rose was killed – together with how you left her in her bed in a pool of blood for her mother to find in the morning. “This was not something she could live with. She ended up taking her own life.” The judge sentenced Skantha to 19 years behind bars without parole. Amber-Rose’s older brother, Jayden Rush, was the only family member to read out a victim impact statement in court yesterday. It was written by his mother – Lisa-Ann Mills – who died in a suspected suicide four months after Amber-Rose’s death.

Couple find lost dog beheaded NZME A young South Auckland couple have been left reeling after finding their missing dog decapitated. It was a heart-wrenching end to two weeks of desperate searching for the pet named Simba. Jeffrey Rapana, 19, had just pulled into the driveway of his Pukekohe home, when he saw his partner standing outside visibly upset. “She said ‘I think I found Simba’,” Rapana told media. “I just started bawling my eyes out because I knew something had happened to him. “She mumbled to me, ‘I think he has no head’.” Hera Ratahi, 19, found the body of their beloved pet dog – in a scruffy condition and beheaded – discarded in a creek on Kayes Rd on March 4. They had looked after the pitbull since he was a puppy. “I don’t know how someone could do that,” Rapana said. The couple had feared the dog was stolen, a suspicion that has only grown since they found Simba’s body. Simba went missing on February 19, shortly after he had been let outside to relieve himself. Ratahi heard Simba make a “weird bark” and shortly after went outside to look for him but he had vanished. The dog had been like a best friend to Rapana. “We were looking for him every single day for two weeks,” he said. The couple are urging people to come forward with any information about the dog’s disappearance or death. “We want to know who did it,” Ratahi said. “Whoever did it doesn’t deserve to be walking around today. They should be put away.” The couple also wanted to warn others to keep a close eye on their pets. “This can’t happen again,” she said. They intend on getting Simba cremated. “My partner wants him home.” The SPCA Auckland confirmed details of the case and said an inspector was to meet the couple yesterday. The inspector was also set to meet the council workers who found the body. SPCA Auckland chief executive Andrea Midgen said “thankfully” cases like this one are fairly rare.

How long till coronavirus arrives here? U

ntil now coronavirus has been something that was happening somewhere else and while there had been four cases reported in New Zealand, they could be tracked to a point of origin. No longer. The latest person to test positive attended a huge public concert. The potential for widespread infection has clearly been huge. All you need is to have been within a metre of the infected man for more than 15 minutes and you’re likely to have bought yourself a case of the rapidlyspreading disease. What makes this case particularly scary is that there is no way to know who was near the

confirmed Covid-19 carrier, at the concert or in the community. And that means there will be hundreds of concert-goers who are wondering if they are now infected and could be spreading the disease. They’ll be taking a long, hard look at their lives and wondering if they should go into lock-up for the next 14 days. Suddenly, coronavirus is real, and clearly it’s coming to a town

near you. Or, is it already there? While it’s something you’d be darned unlucky to die from, who wants to take the chance? And who wants to take the chance of infecting someone who may have a compromised immune system, someone for whom Covid-19 might be a death sentence? But what to do? Clearly there’s already panic abroad. Stores are running out of face masks, that we’re being told won’t make much difference when it comes to catching the thing, and they’re also running out of that handbag and back pocket essential – hand sanitiser. Panic buying has hit the country and people, fearing the need

to either self isolate in case they are infected, or self isolate so they don’t become infected, are stocking up big time on food staples and non-perishables. You can’t dismiss people’s fears as just silly hysteria. No-one wants to get sick and no-one wants to make others sick. Person-to-person infection aside, the impact of coronavirus is clearly being felt in a multitude of less personal ways. Tourism has gone into slowdown, businesses are feeling the pinch as people elect not to travel, or choose to stay home rather than go into public places where they’re among crowds of strangers. For businesses, there’s also a

question that must be hanging over many heads – will there come a time when they should close their doors and tell staff to stay home – just to be safe. Other than going into self isolation, there may not be a lot we can do to keep ourselves safe. Yes we can ensure we wash our hands well with sanitiser, but we can’t do a darned thing about the stuff that may be floating in the air we breathe. With just four confirmed cases, we’re light years away from an outbreak, such as a mid winter flu brings, but the risk is most definitely there. And, for Joe Public, that is increasingly becoming a worry, one for which there’s no easy answer.

Today’s question is . . . why? W

hy? Such a simple word but such a powerful one. Questioning why is to invite understanding but can provoke animosity. Why close an i-SITE? Why buy a facemask if you never wore one during flu season? At the moment I’m struggling with what should be an easy decision. See, it’s no secret I love my motorbike. I’m more in love with it than Simon Bridges is with his blue suits. I’d rather ride in the rain than have a day off work (hang on, I might re-think that one). Anyway, I love to ride and so it should be a no-brainer having the opportunity to go on two different motorcycle rides coming up, especially as they are both on one weekend. My struggle is why one of them is happening and that is making me think about being part of it. Both rides are organised by local riders, with North Island connections. The first is from a group called Tribal Nations Motorcycle Club, or TNMC for short, its mother chapter is in Ngaruawahia. This group is coming to Ashburton via Christchurch on Saturday, March 14. They aim to arrive in the West Street carpark between 1pm1.30pm. It’s organised by the Te Turu region of riders based in Christchurch. They have organised King Cass to perform, entry is free and there will be Harley rides along with TNMC and RATS (Riders Against Teenage Suicide) merchandise and food available. They will also run raffles as a fundraiser. They will be charging their own riders and anyone who rides with them $15, and then will turn

around and give all proceeds to Safer Ashburton. Think about that – in their own time they are going to ride from ‘Up Norf’ as we call it, and then pay some of their own money to a local group here that supports locals – not them. They have done this before when they rode down to Reefton and gave all the proceeds of their ride to the Reefton RSA. In December their Kai and Koha ride in Twizel raised over $7000 for Heartland Services. Then there is the second ride. It’s called the Ride of Remembrance 2020 on Sunday, March 15, beginning in Rangiora at 10am and riding into Christchurch as a way to honour the 51 lives lost in the Mosque tragedies. But I have to ask why? This ride is hosted by Man Up Canterbury and supported by Tu Tangata Riders. Don’t know them? How about their Auckland connection – Brian Tamaki and Destiny Church. He is the patriarch of the Man Up campaign. In the last few days he directly spoke about the covid-19 virus being a sign that we must turn back to the One True God. That’s the God according to him. So why ride in remembrance of a hate event against Islam? Would this self-appointed, silver tongued street preacher embrace Muslims if they do not recognise his God? In a Facebook post following the March attacks, Tamaki said, “we cannot accept the proliferation of Islam in our country.”

There will be riders coming from the North Island and local riders are being asked to meet up with them the day before and escort them into Rangiora. It costs the same as the TNMC ride, to ride with them, but the $15 is not for a local group helping victims and communities, it covers the lunch. There is a stipulation that the ride is open to “Iron Horse Riders” – big, loud, v-twin American bikes. It’s all about the look and the noise. Why? Why ride down here and make a show of riding into a city still healing from the brutality of the attacks, when your own leader is anti-Islam? Who is this ride for? I’m going to bet that of the two rides, the Remembrance Ride will get national media coverage. Man Up have specifically selected an event that will be in the media spotlight, so that they are. I have no idea of the route they will take but I’ll wager a year’s worth of Ministry of Education biscuits they will ride the motorway, across both lanes, loud and in your face. There will be no national

coverage of the humility of the TNMC ride to Ashburton. This group have come together to raise awareness of abuse, mental well-being and suicide. Some of them will ride from as far as Auckland, Nelson and Invercargill. They seek no glory, do not stipulate what bike you must ride. In fact, how much coverage have you seen of this event? They will be wearing patches, but do not let first impressions fool you, this is no hardened gang. One of their patches is F.A.I.T.H – Family, Acceptance, Integrity, Trust, Honesty. Sounds just like the type of faith Brian Tamaki needs. If these guys are prepared to do this for us and Safer Ashburton, then the very least we can do is be there for them. Our challenge is to help them raise more than the Twizel ride. See you at the West Street carpark, Saturday, March 14, 1.30pm onwards and don’t ask why. e live in interesting times, fortunately at a distance from some of the events overseas. We saw a little bit of it in New Zealand last weekend with lines outside supermarkets. The fear behind that appears to be the prospect of being isolated in your house for two weeks. Sharemarkets have gone through wild swings because the effects of the virus cannot be quantified. The world’s first avocado milk – made in the Hawke’s Bay – has been flying off supermarket shelves in the United States and is on track to surpass $1 million in sales by August. The drink, developed by Auckland chef and TV personality and the owner of Asian cooking school Sachie’s Kitchen, Sachie Nomura, came about following a failed attempt in the kitchen. Nomura has spent the last four years developing “hundreds” of iterations of the recipe, and invested about $500,000 into research and development. Her Avocadomilk product is now in 100 stores in the US, through Californian supermarket chains Gelson’s Markets and Lassen’s, and has piqued the interest of Target, which is reinventing itself and pushing into the grocery space. Sales of the drink priced at $US7.99 for 800ml are expected to surpass $1 million within in the next six months. It went on sale in the US in November. Nomura says the drink has 40 per cent of a regular-sized avocado in one 800ml bottle, and was a “world first”, which had made it easy to get supermarkets in America to get on board and stock the product. “What we learnt – why there isn’t avocado milk in the market – is that, from hard experience, it is one of

the most unstable fruits in the world; it would go brown, oil separation occurs, let alone how to de-husk, de-pip an avocado, and generate a beverage with a shelf life and make it taste [good],” Nomura said, adding that’s what took the four years of research and development. Unlike most Kiwi export companies, the US was Avocadomilk’s first launch market. America, as an export market, is often put in the “too hard basket” by New Zealand companies – usually left to later down the track to explore. “Our market research told us that California was the place that was the trendsetter when it comes to alternative plant-based products, and that’s where all the major food trends occur – we figured that was the place to go,” Nomura told media,

“We put our feelers out to some of the retailers there and have had amazing responses.” It is made in Hawke’s Bay from avocados imported from Mexico. So far the company has produced more than 100,000 litres of the milk, the equivalent of about 160,000 bottles. The company has no immediate plans to bring the milk to New Zealand. However, it does plan to launch a dairy version of the avocado milk in Aotearoa in the future. It also plans to roll-out a food service product for cafes and restaurants. “The product is 100 per cent plant-based right now, but we certainly think with New Zealand having a really strong dairy heritage there’s an opportunity to make a dairy version of avocado milk – ice cream avocado milk, yoghurt avocado milk.” Nomura said she had already developed the recipe for a dairy version and was looking for a partner with the expertise to help her bring it to the market in New Zealand. “Our big focus right now is the west coast of America, then we’ll start moving up into Portland and Colorado. We’ve already had demand from the east coast, from New York, so we’ll service that as well as central markets in Texas. Once we have that nutted out we’ll start to look at other markets.”

Ceasefire deal for Syria AP The presidents of Russia and Turkey said they reached agreement on a cease-fire which was to begin at midnight Thursday in north-western Syria, where escalating fighting had threatened to put forces from the two countries into direct conflict. The deal struck by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan would set up a security corridor along a key eastwest highway in Idlib province. Putin voiced hope the agreement will serve as a “good basis for ending the fighting in the Idlib de-escalation zone, put an end to suffering of civilian population and contain a growing humanitarian crisis.” The agreement appears to achieve Russia’s key goal of allowing the Syrian government to secure control over strategic highways essential for consolidating its grip on the country after a devastating nine-year war. But in a nod to Turkey’s interests, the deal also puts the brakes on Syrian President Bashar Assad’s push to reclaim control over all of Idlib province, the last opposition-controlled region that borders Turkey. Erdogan said he and Putin agreed to help refugees return to their homes. More than 900,000 people have been displaced by the fighting since Assad’s forces began an offensive in December backed by Russian airstrikes. Both leaders had underlined the need for an agreement at the start of the Kremlin talks, which lasted more than six hours. One goal had been to prevent damaging their bilateral relations and blossoming trade.

PHOTO AP UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres noted the ceasefire agreement and hoped it will lead “to an immediate and lasting cessation of hostilities that ensures the protection of civilians in north-west Syria, who have already endured enormous suffering,” UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said. Guterres also called for a return to the UN-facilitated political process, aimed at ending the nine-year conflict, Dujarric said. Until the latest crisis, Putin and Erdogan had managed to co-ordinate their interests in Syria even though Moscow backed Assad while Ankara supported the government’s foes. Both Russia and Turkey wanted to avoid a showdown but the sharply conflicting interests in Idlib province made it difficult to negotiate a mutually acceptable compromise. The Syrian offensive in Idlib has resulted in Turkey sending in thousands of troops to repel the Syrian army. Clashes on the ground and in the air have

left dozens dead on both sides. Russia, which has helped Assad reclaim most of the country’s territory, has signalled it won’t sit by while Turkey routs his troops. The fighting also has pushed nearly 1 million Syrian civilians toward Turkey, which already hosts more than 3.5 million Syrian refugees. Erdogan responded by opening Turkey’s gateway to Europe in an apparent bid to persuade the West to offer more support to Ankara. He has frequently threatened to open Turkey’s borders to Europe, maintaining that the European Union has not upheld its end of a more than 6 billion-euro deal designed to stem the flow of migrants after more than 1 million people entered the EU in 2015. “The world’s eyes are on us,” Erdogan had said. “The steps we will take, the right decisions we will take here today will help ease (concerns in) the region and our countries.” After Turkey had downed several Syrian jets, Moscow

warned Ankara on Sunday that its aircraft would be unsafe if they enter Syrian airspace. The fighting in Idlib is the most severe test of Russia-Turkey ties since Turkey’s downed a Russian warplane near the Syrian border in November 2015. Russia responded then with sweeping economic sanctions, cutting the flow of its tourists to Turkey and banning most Turkish exports — a punishment that eventually forced Turkey to back off. The talks in Moscow marked the 10th meeting in just over a year between Putin and Erdogan, who call each other “dear friend” and have polished a fine art of bargaining. In October, they agreed to deploy their forces across Syria’s north-eastern border to fill the void left by President Donald Trump’s abrupt withdrawal of US forces. Before that, they had negotiated deals that saw opposition fighters from various areas in Syria move into Idlib, and in 2018 carved out a de-escalation zone in Idlib. They blamed one another for the collapse of the Idlib deal, with Moscow holding Ankara responsible for letting al-Qaida-linked militants launch attacks from the area and Turkey accusing Moscow of failing to rein in Assad. The Russian and Turkish foreign ministers said Thursday’s agreement involves a ceasefire to be enforced starting at midnight along existing battle lines. In the deal with Erdogan, Putin appeared to accept the presence of Turkey-backed militants in areas alongside the border and put brakes for now on Assad’s attempts to claim full control over Idlib. That compromise will allow Turkey to secure its stake in Syria and prevent refugees from fleeing across the border.

New York police under review after arrest NZME Video showing New York City police officers arresting a young black man sparked outrage and elicited questions about the amount of force used to make the arrest in a city where mistrust of police remains high more than five years after Eric Garner’s death from an officer’s chokehold. Fitzroy Gayle, 20, pleads for help in the video, recorded by a woman who then tweeted it, as several officers wrestle him into submission Wednesday evening on a Brooklyn sidewalk. When Gayle asked a lone plainclothes officer why he was being stopped, the officer did not appear to answer before uniformed backup rushed in. “This was painful to watch,” Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted. “We still need to get all the facts about this case and a full

investigation is underway, but I don’t like what I saw. It doesn’t reflect what we’re building in New York City.” The city’s largest police union responded on Twitter, calling de Blasio’s remarks “anti-police rhetoric” and accusing him of “inflaming the situation” with a rush to judgment. The man in the video had fled officers who approached him and another man as they were smoking marijuana in a park around 7pm, Shea said. The officers were responding to an automated alert to gunshots, Shea said. Both men were later apprehended, but there is no indication they were linked to the gunfire, he said. Gayle was arrested and charged with resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration and marijuana possession. The second man, whom police have not identified, was issued a summons.

The episode is under internal review. Shea said there were “some disturbing points” to the video. One of the officers could be seen standing on the man’s ankle, he said, offering a possible explanation for why Gayle screamed during the scrum. Photos of Gayle taken after the arrest showed abrasions to his knee but no apparent injuries to his face or upper body, the commissioner said. “The end is what concerns me,” Shea said. A better outcome would have seen officers approaching the men followed by “discussion and no running” from police, he said. “No physical resistance at all. No arrest needed.” Gayle’s lawyer, Sanford Rubenstein, said the video demonstrates “that the era of stop and frisk is not over in New York City. The police officers involved in this brutal assault must be brought to justice.”

Rev Kevin McCall, a civil rights activist in Brooklyn, said Gayle’s family was calling for District Attorney Eric Gonzalez to open his own investigation into the officers’ conduct. McCall also said Shea should suspend the officers. The arrest came on the heels of renewed spotlight on stop, question and frisk, a policing strategy once championed by former Mayor Mike Bloomberg, who expressed regret for its overuse as he launched his now-suspended campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination. Data released last month showed such encounters increased by 22 per cent last year. Black people and non-white Hispanic people were 88 per cent of those stopped and 90 per cent of those frisked, and 88 per cent of those against whom force was used, according to an analysis by the New York Civil Liberties Union.

Allen’s memoir ‘upsetting’ Woody Allen’s estranged daughter Dylan Farrow has called the publication of her father’s memoir “deeply upsetting” and an “utter betrayal” against her brother Ronan. The filmmaker’s new book, titled Apropos of Nothing, is being published by Hachette, the same company that released Ronan’s book detailing his investigations into cases of abuse, Catch and Kill. In a statement posted to her Twitter account, Dylan – who has previously accused Allen of molesting her when she was a child – said she had not been contacted by any fact checkers to verify her father’s memoir. Allen has always denied allegations of abuse.

Lumley ambushed Joanna Lumley has told how she was ambushed by armed bandits while making a TV documentary. The actor had been filming in troubled Haiti when she and her camera crew were stopped in their car. Joanna, 73, said: “Suddenly there was a blockage across the road. They’d put branches down. “Our bodyguards got out and said, ‘Come on guys, clear it away’. And they said, ‘No, we want your money or your life.’ Sometimes they dig trenches, pour oil in and set fire to it, then they come with guns and take your wallets.” But Joanna’s ordeal did not leave her feeling desperate to leave the Caribbean country.

Katy Perry pregnant Katy Perry has revealed she’s pregnant in a very show business way. The 35-yearold pop star showed off her growing baby bump at the end of the video for her latest song Never Worn White. On Instagram, Perry said her pregnancy is “probably the longest secret” she has “ever had to keep”. The news was confirmed by Perry’s label, Capitol Music Group. The baby will be Perry’s first, and the second for her fiance, Orlando Bloom, who has a 9-year-old son, Flynn, with exwife Miranda Kerr. Not willing to skate on last season’s form, the boys from the Southern Rugby Club are set to hit the restart button for the upcoming club season. The Mid Canterbury club are on the road next week where they play the first of two pre-season games. After finishing the regular season atop Section A of the Com-

bined Country Competition, Southern were joint winners of the Luisetti Seeds Cup Final last year following the 31-all draw with Glenmark Cheviot in the final. The club travels to South Canterbury over the coming weeks – their first pre-season game is against Pleasant Point on Friday before taking on Harlequins RFC in a fortnight. With a new coaching setup and

some new faces, the upcoming pre-season fixtures may offer more of a gauge for the club compared to their successful 2019 campaign. Co-coach Jon Dampney said there were three new coaches and a new manager who have been brought into the fold. “We’ve had a bit of a change from last year to this year, but it is an exciting one.” A decision on head coach was

still to be confirmed, Dampney said. The squad has begun to assemble for pre-season training although a significant portion of players have harvesting commitments. “It kind of knocks around a bit,” he said. Following on from a stellar season in the combined country rugby competition last year, there should be a healthy dose

of anticipation from the playing group. Dampney said a major focus was “starting again”. “Last year was a good year, but that year has finished. “We’ve got new faces and new coaches so she’s pretty exciting times. “We’re really just looking forward to getting everyone to training and seeing what we can do.”

It may have been by the most minuscule of margins at the Mount Hutt College (MHC) athletics finals, but a record broken is a record broken. MHC pupil Charlie Brown scampered his way to a win in the under-16.5 100m sprint, breaking a combined record which has stood for more than fifteen years as he was crowned athletics champion in his age category. Brown’s time of 11.59sec eclipsed the previous record of 11.60secs in the category, which was registered in 2000 and again in 2005. The finals were scheduled for Wednesday, however were pushed back a day due to the weather. Other winners throughout the day includ-

ed Samuel Ree and Monique Johnson, who won the senior boys’ and girls’ champion titles respectively. Alongside Brown, Meghan Foster won the under-16.5 title for the girls. Elsewhere on the day, Maddison Foster won the under-15 girls’, Johan Struwig took out the under-15 boys’, Lucy Reeve the under-14 girls’ and Thomas McKenzie the under-14 boys’. The youngest champions of the day were Gishbert Pangilinan and Mikayla Marshall who won the under-12.5 boys’ and girls’ categories respectively. MHC sports co-ordinator Latoya Keepa said it was a great day for all. ‘”We got lucky with the weather after it was postponed. “The kids had fun and we were happy with how the day went.”

IRONMAN LEGEND Cameron Brown remains one of the favourites to take out this year’s Ironman New Zealand title today, 23 years after competing in his first event. Brown, 47, will line up once again hoping to add to the 12 titles he’s already won. He competed in his first triathlon in 1987 and tried his hand at the shorter distance in a hope to get to an Olympics. It never eventuated so instead he went for the 3.86km swim, the 180km bike and the 42.2km run. Brown never looked back. He competed in his first Ironman in Auckland in 1997, falling in love with it straight away. “Ever since I left school it’s been my full-time job which is pretty cool.” However, age is catching up with Brown, injury forced him out of last year’s race and he’s had his issues over the summer. “The body is breaking down, I broke down plenty of times last year with a few calf injuries, so just trying to manage them and look after them. “As I get older and you think you’re still in your twenties but keeping those injuries at bay is very very important now. “I’ve just come off a seven week disruption with a calf injury but things are going well now. “It’s when I stop training I tend to tighten up and get injured, so the idea is to keep the body moving and keep it flexible and so it’s hard when you love it so much and you keep pushing yourself,” he said. Brown had a golden run in the Taupo event; he owned it for a while, winning 10 times in 11 years. In total he’s won 12 times, his first victory was in 2001, his last in 2016. He’s been European Ironman Champion, while he’s finished second twice and third twice at the World Championships in Hawaii. Brown has no plans on giving up and says he’ll be doing another northern hemisphere season this year and still has a couple of events on his bucket list including Ironman Canada which he in-

Cameron Brown exits the water. tends to do for the first time later this year. So why does he remain at the top of his game? He feels the Ironman allows older athletes to be competitive. “Definitely, I think as a sport we mature in our thirties, I’m probably the odd one out, I’m still going well in my late forties.” “I think it’s just a passion for the sport, trying to push the body still and every year you keep raising the bar as other athletes are pushing the boundaries so you keep pushing it also.” After the disappointment of failing to finish last year, Brown is motivated to do well this weekend, and that means winning. “Definitely, probably a bit more luck on my side as I’m up against

thirty-year-olds, so if they fall apart then hopefully I can come through. “Being nearly 48 makes it more and more difficult every year but I’m always up for a challenge.” Brown excells on the run and has often relied on the last leg to chase down his opponents, and he feels that will be one of his strengths again this weekend. “I’ve been a little hindered. “I’ve only had five or six weeks build-up to this race because of the calf injury which took a lot longer to get over than I anticipated. “But the run has really come up the last few weeks and I’m really excited about that and hopefully I’ve done enough to make it as strong as I can.”

He’ll have plenty of competition once again with New Zealanders Mike Phillips, Methven’s Braden Currie and Joe Skipper of Britain leading another stellar field, while American Jocelyn McCauley and Meredith Kessler do battle with New Zealander Teresa Adam in the women’s race. However, outside the pros there are another 1300 doing for pleasure, if you can call it that. Many of them are doing it for the first time, attempting to tick off a bucket list item. Brown loves being a part of a much bigger event. “It’s great. “It’s one of those sports where professionals and amateurs compete on the same course at the same time.

“We’re out there for eight hours but some people are out there for 17 hours and you see them on the course and a lot of them inspire you to keep pushing as well.” “It’s not just the three o’clock finishers, there’s still massive crowds at one o’clock in the morning watching those people finish as well. Almost 1400 people will be taking part in Ironman this weekend with the youngest being 20 and the oldest 80. There are also just over a thousand people taking part in the 70.3 half Ironman event. But keep an eye out for Cameron Brown somewhere around Taupo on Saturday, he’s likely to be that fella somewhere near the front.

‘If he dies, he dies. It’s not really my problem’ By Christopher Reive Yoel Romero has never been stopped in his 13-fight UFC career. Israel Adesanya wants to change that. The Kiwi UFC middleweight champion will face Romero in a five-round headline bout at UFC 248 in Las Vegas tomorrow (NZ time), in his first official title defence since dethroning Robert Whittaker last October.

Romero has proven to be a tough out throughout his career. The 42-year-old Cuban has lost just three times inside the UFC octagon, with all three losses by decision. A perennial title contender, Romero has become known for his erratic and violent style of fighting and is thought by fans and pundits to be an opponent fighters in the division only face if they have to. “He’s the guy no one wants to

fight,” Adesanya said. “Why? I’ve seen him get rocked, I’ve seen him get stopped, I’ve seen him get bloodied, I’ve seen him cry; I’ll make him cry. He’s human like anyone else. “I want 5-0. I want a wash out … I want a clean sweep. But, if he dies he dies. It’s not really my problem.” Adesanya requested a fight against Romero when challenger Paulo Costa was ruled out of action with injury late last year.

There were layers to requesting Romero as an opponent, one of which being the fact Romero is an Olympic silver medal-winning wrestler and could pose a test unlike any other Adesanya has faced. In his last four fights, Romero has attempted to take his opponents to the canvas 64 times, succeeding on 16 of those. In his two title fights against Whittaker, Romero attempted a total of 56 takedowns through 10 rounds. He won’t be the first to try get

Adesanya to the ground should he take that approach, but could find it to be a tricky task. Adesanya has successfully evaded 84 of 98 takedown attempts during his seven bouts in the UFC. Even when he is taken to the ground, keeping him there is another task as he has shown an impressive sprawling ability. “If he comes heavy with the wrestling he’d better pack a lunch because he’s going to be in for a long day,” Adesanya said.

Vital clash for Blues and Canes When the season’s Super Rugby draw was announced, this clash was one that was expected to pique the interest of Kiwi rugby fans. But while former Hurricanes star Beauden Barrett won’t be running out for the Blues this weekend, there is still plenty of intrigue surrounding it. For the Blues, the clash against the Hurricanes shapes up as a pivotal and telling fixture of how the team is poised going forward. The cellar dwellers of the New Zealand conference over the past few seasons, some stellar performances away from home showed signed that their fortunes were starting to change. However, they are yet to win on New Zealand soil this year, with losses to the Chiefs and Crusaders. The Hurricanes shape up as a good measuring stick for the Blues, with the sides expected

to scuffle for the No.3-seeded Kiwi team this year, behind the Chiefs and Crusaders. The Blues come into the match off the back of a long trip home from South Africa, made even longer by flight delays. However, they will be able to turn to the likes of Akira Ioane and Gerard Cowley-Tuioti who did not make the trip to South Africa to provide some energy on the park. The Hurricanes return to Wellington after dismantling the Sunwolves in Napier, in a match that saw them run in 10 tries – five of which were either scored or assisted by midfielder Vince Aso. The Hurricanes have won three of their four matches this season, with the sole loss coming in the opening round of the campaign. The Blues hold a 3-2 record through five rounds – yet to have a bye – with all their victories coming outside of New Zealand.

Memories of Jonah will simply last forever By Phil Gifford

’ve only been booed off stage at a rugby club once. It was in the late 1990s in the South Island. After making a speech I was taking questions from the audience. Who, asked a rugged-looking farmer, was the greatest All Black I’d ever seen? I said I had to divide the answer to this into best forward and best back. The best forward was Colin Meads (keep in mind this was at a time when Richie McCaw was still at school). There was a round of enthusiastic applause. The best back was Jonah Lomu. The silence that followed was broken by a voice from the back calling, “Bull****!” Booing then broke out. I thanked them all for their time and scurried off stage. This week as a cricket spectator at Hagley Oval I was asked the same “greatest All Black” question by a friendly cricket fan, who was a Iittle puzzled, but more polite than the rugby club audience, when I stuck with Lomu as the greatest back. I agree with our only unbeaten All Black coach, Sir Fred Allen, who a decade ago, when we had a “best ever All Black” conversation, firmly backed Dan Carter for his all-round skills. As Fred pointed out, Carter was the complete footballer. But I’d still argue that Lomu had even more influence on global rugby than Carter. For years after the 1995 World Cup, Jonah was a name you’d hear from a rental car clerk in Las Vegas (“How’s your man Jonah’s health,” I was asked in 2000) to a taxi driver in London (“How big is that bloody Lomu?” asked a cabbie during the 1999 World Cup). In Europe and even in America he transcended the game in the way Muhammad Ali would tran-

scend boxing. And, in the brief, golden periods when Lomu was in full health on the rugby field, he was, like Ali, the greatest. It’ll soon be 25 years since Lomu ran onto Ellis Park for the first game of the ‘95 Cup, with the All Blacks playing Ireland. By the time the tournament was over the then 20-year-old would be a household name in England, a target for American football clubs, and the first All Black to have a story written about him in Time magazine. Lomu was the man all South Africans wanted to meet. President Nelson Mandela was introduced to the players before the final. Before rugby officials could say the name, when he got to Lomu his famous smile beamed, his hand shot out, and he said, “Hi Jonah, nice to meet you.” Most importantly for the sport, in New York, billionaire media tycoon Rupert Murdoch saw him on television and told Sam Chisholm, his man negotiating a $555 million rugby television deal with South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, “We’ve got to have that guy.” Would there have been professional rugby without Lomu? Almost certainly. But did he speed up the process, give the game a previously unheard of worldwide boost, and up the financial ante? Hell, yes. No player has ever dominated a World Cup the way Lomu did in 1995. In that first game against Ireland he scored two tries, then ran 70 metres, swatting aside four tacklers, and, when the fifth managed to halt him on the line, popped the ball up to flanker Josh Kronfeld for a try that would later be judged by an IRB panel the best of the tournament. The All Blacks won 43-19. Four days later Wales were dispatched, 34-9. Lomu didn’t

score a try, but he set up one for Kronfeld again, this time bashing through five tacklers in the process. He was rested for the 145-17 rout of Japan, but, on June 11 at Ellis Park, it was quarter-final time, against Scotland. By then Lomumania had gripped South Africa, and the rugby world. Scotland’s captain Gavin Hastings was asked for his views on the new star. A charming man with a droll sense of humour, he deadpanned: “He’s a big bastard isn’t he?” Against Scotland, Lomu did something different again. On the flinty ground at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria he twice ran such a fast outside line it left the poor Scottish right wing, Craig Joiner, looking as if his sprigs have been screwed into the sunscorched turf. Lomu scored, and the All Blacks won 48-30. On a sunny Cape Town Sunday during the All Blacks’ 45-29 win over England in a semi-final comes the moment that cemented Lomu as a national figure in Britain. Straight after the kickoff is knocked on by England captain Will Carling, the All Blacks attack from the scrum. Fullback Glen Osborne’s pass to Lomu falls behind him, but he just has time to pick it up and head for the line. In his 2004 book, “Jonah”, Lomu describes what happens. “Look out, here’s Tony Underwood coming in for the hit. Misses. Spins. Goal-line ahead. Not far now. Around the outside of (Will) Carling. Damn. He’s clipped me. Stumbling. Keep your balance Jonah. Get your balance. Look up. Mike Catt. Two strides. No option. Shoulder in my vision. Get your knee up Jonah. Bang. Into him. Over him. Through him. Sorry Mike.” Catt was left, as one English

writer said, “like roadkill in a white jersey”. On TVNZ commentator Keith Quinn lost it. He’d prepared for a Lomu try, and even had a phrase he’d borrowed from an NBA basketball writer, “all muscle and pump”, written down and ready to use. In the excitement the paper was knocked off his desk, and all he could gasp out was, “Oh. Oh. Oh. Lomu”. The final, at Ellis Park, wasn’t a Hollywood ending for Lomu. Let’s not revisit too much the gastric illness that struck down nine out of the 15 starting All Blacks in the days before that warm Saturday afternoon, but between some listless-looking All Blacks, and an inspired South African side, Lomu, for the only time at the World Cup, couldn’t shred defensive lines. South Africa won in extra time, 15-12. So, seven tries in five World Cup games, but no gold medal, why do I still think so highly of Lomu? Let me offer some thoughts. One. For a wing he was a giant, and would still be considered so if he was playing now, at 1.96m (6ft 5in) and 120kg. But he was also stunningly fast. As a schoolboy at Wesley College he was timed over the 100 metres at 10.89s. “I’ve seen players that big before,” said his ‘95 All Black manager, Colin Meads, “but they were all forwards. I’ve never seen anyone Jonah’s size who had his speed.” Two. He had what coaches call soft hands, able to hold even an awkward pass, and terrific balance. Even much later in his career, when he was secretly battling kidney disease, he could score tries no other wing could hope to. In 2000 in Sydney, when the All Blacks won, 39-35, in what opposing Wallaby captain John

Eales told me was the greatest test he ever played in, Lomu would tip toe down the sideline to score the try to seal the match. “Who else but Jonah,” said All Black captain Todd Blackadder years later, “would have scored that try?” Indeed. Three. He was no flat-track bully. At the 1999 World Cup, when France beat the All Blacks 43-21 at Twickenham in the semi-final, Lomu was the best All Black on the field. He scored his second try of that game just after halftime, by smashing aside one of the biggest, toughest French forwards, the rugged Moroccan Abdel Benazzi. Four. He was, in his own words, a Southsider, a kid from Mangere, who’d buy a car with a sound system so loud I once heard the bass booming long before I saw him driving down the street to the All Blacks’ hotel. For some stiff-necked old-schoolers it was all a bit too much, and he was sometimes judged more harshly as a player than someone from rugby’s traditional heartlands would have been. Five. He was a good man. The last time I saw him was in 2014, a year before he died, at a monster truck show at Waikaraka Park. He loved large, noisy machines, and was acting as a PR man for one of the drivers. The damage illness had wrought on the rampaging player of his youth was clear. He moved slowly and carefully. My final memory was of him gently shaking hands with my then 3-year-old grandson Cooper, telling him to enjoy the day. It’s beyond sad that Jonah himself would have so few left in his life. But for some of us the memories will last forever.

Umpiring a family affair As we head into the winter code season, the role of officials and administrators are just as integral as the performers on the turf and court. This week sports reporter Adam Burns caught up with father daughter combo and netball umpires Ashlein and Heath Lyttle By Adam Burns

It can be a formidable task officiating competitive sport. No just the physical demands, but the mental ones also. But for Mid Canterbury netball umpires Heath and Ashlein Lyttle, at least they can swap notes. The pair are again set to don the whistle ahead of a busy Mid Canterbury netball season. The fact they are a father-and-daughter combination in premier grade netball is not the only factor which make the Lyttles unique. Ashlein is undaunted as a teenager adjudicating players much older than herself, while father Heath is one of a handful of men involved in a sport dominated by the opposite gender. Initially this was an element Heath had to learn to acclimatise to after being roped in by coach and umpire Wendy Hopwood about four years ago. “One of the biggest challenges was being a male in a female-dominated sport which was hard to adjust to at the start. “It takes time to adjust to that sort of stuff. “There’s only three of us men who are umpires. “It’s just normal now.” But it was already on the radar and Heath thought it would be a good way to keep fit in the winter. Heath also officiates local softball during the summer. Although both codes are pointedly different, there are general elements that he has transferred over to the courtside from the diamond. “The mental side, how you take things in. “Having to learn the rules becomes second nature and keeping up with all the rule changes.” Although the softballing rulebook was

Ashlein has been umpiring for nearly two years and said it was a natural move given she was on the side of the court most weeks with both parents involved. “We were here most of the time, so thought I may as well get in and do something while I’m here,” she said. Although she is officiating in a mixture of grades, Ashlein – like her father – made her own mental adjustments when officiating the big guns at premier level. “Getting up to premier – they’re a lot older. “It can be intimidating but you just got to block it all out.” With both her father and some of the more experienced local officials, there was plenty of support on hand for the Ashburton College pupil. Despite its challenges though, there re-

mains a significant allure in being involved in bigger games and advancing the craft. “I guess for any sport, when you’re officiating, your one goal is to be at the top at the end and trying to get near that is always an aim,” Heath said. “Getting those really close, challenging games and thriving off the tightness of the game.” Ashlein, who is also a Mid Canterbury age group rep as a player, admits her biggest long term priority remains with ball in hand. However she is encouraged that she has another string to the bow to fall back on. “There is definitely a second option that I can go to,” she said. Her father said she has youth on her side and that she had the potential to go far given she has started at an early age. “The earlier that you do it the better,” he said.

heaviest defeat in the fledgling club’s history. In six games, the Wolfpack have scored 70 points, but conceded 214. They’re back in action next weekend against Hull Kingston Rovers. The bottom Super League team is relegated at the end of the season and replaced by the winners of the second-tier Championship.

Last year Heath completed his New Zealand theory exam and was hoping to be nominated to complete a practical test, which is assessed by Netball New Zealand panel examiners in 2020. Pike launches Sydney assault Multiple Group One-winning sprinter The Bostonian is set to return to action at Randwick today, kicking off a Sydney autumn carnival campaign for Cambridge trainer Tony Pike. The winner of the Gr.1 Doomben 10,000 (1200m) and Gr.1 Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m) in Queensland last winter, the Jimmy Choux gelding will line up in today’s Gr.1 Canterbury Stakes at Randwick. The Bostonian had four starts in Melbourne in the spring, headed by a third-placing in the Gr.2 Schillaci Stakes (1100m) behind subsequent The Everest (1200m) placegetter Trekking. He also finished within two and a half lengths of the winners Nature Strip in the Gr.1 Moir Stakes (1000m) and Loving Gaby in the Gr.1 Manikato Stakes (1200m). A stylish winner of a trial at Tauranga early last month, The Bostonian takes a strong first-up record into today’s race. He has won five of his six starts in that state. one in a seven-horse field and will be ridden by Nash Rawiller. “With such a small field, it’s certainly going to be a very tactical race and it’ll be interesting to see how it plays out,” Pike said. “They’ve had quite a significant amount of rain in Sydney this week, which you would say is going to help his chances. “I’ve been really happy with his build-up. He trialled well in early February, and then he had a gallop at Ellerslie last week that I thought was very good. “He’s going into the race in very good order and has a great record fresh. We expect him to run a very good race. If he comes through it well, the George Ryder Stakes is the logical next step.” The Bostonian has been joined on his trip across the Tasman by two-year-old stablemate Not An Option. The son of Not a Single Doubt was an impressive winner of his first two starts including the Gr.2 Wakefield Challenge Stakes (1100m), then placed in the Gr.2 Eclipse Stakes

(1200m) before a tough run from a wide gate when unplaced in the Karaka Million 2YO (1200m). “He travelled over with The Bostonian and is set to trial at Randwick on the 14th,” Pike said. “The most likely plan with him is to have two trials, then run fresh up in the Kindergarten Stakes (Gr.3, 1100m) at Randwick on April 4. “We gave him a break after the Karaka Million (1200m), and that did him the world of good. He’s looking great and coming up very well.” Sherwood Forest, who handed Pike his second Gr.1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) at Ellerslie last Saturday, is also in line for a trip to Sydney. “He’s come through the Derby well,” Pike said. “We’re just giving him a quiet week or 10 days, and then as long as we continue to be happy with him, he’ll fly over to Sydney to run in the Rosehill Guineas (Gr.1, 2000m) on March 21. Sports world under caution By Tim Dahlberg So far, at least, spring training ballparks are drawing good crowds and NBA and NHL arenas are mostly full. There’s little sign of coronavirus panic among US sports fans, even if the team store doesn’t carry masks with their favorite player’s name and number on them. That may change. And soon. Two colleges this week cancelled trips to the Seattle area for basketball games after an outbreak of the new coronavirus in Washington state, the first major US sports disruptions because of the virus. Chicago State officials said in a statement that the decision not to make the trip to an area under a state of emergency was done with the “health and well-being of the campus community in mind.’’ It might be undue caution, but the schools decided the risk of contracting the virus was greater than reward of possibly winning a game. That mean’s there will be no senior day this year at Seattle University, where players were supposed to be honored before Saturday’s game against Missouri-Kansas City. These are dangerous and unpredictable times. “There’s a virus spreading that can kill, and it seems no large gathering is completely safe. In Denmark on Thursday, a former professional soccer player who represented the country at the 2010 World Cup tested positive for the virus. Thirteen people who attended a soccer game in Amsterdam along with Thomas Kahlenberg were put in home quarantine, while three players from the Lyngby club who had been in contact with Kahlenberg were also quarantined. And in Las Vegas, where five conference basketball tournaments will be played over the next week, officials yesterday announced the first presumptive case of the virus. Nobody knows just how much the coronavirus will spread. Nobody knows how much it will disrupt American sports or American society. Recent events in affected areas around the world, though, suggest it won’t be good. An ominous pattern is developing that threatens sports – at least temporarily – as we know them now. In Italy, all sports events will take place without fans for at least

Sports competitions and pre-Olympic events have been cancelled in Japan, even as organizers vow the Summer Olympics will go on as planned in July. In England, pre-game handshakes between Premier League players have been banned, and there are suggestions some future matches may end up being played without fans. Even players in the Italy-South Korea Davis Cup qualifier this weekend will have to adjust. They will handle their own towels, so the ball kids don’t have to touch their sweat. Suddenly, the hypothetical doesn’t seem so hypothetical anymore. Sports draw crowds, and crowds are the enemy of efforts to contain the virus. Could we see empty stadiums as the major league season begins?

It seems implausible at first blush, but the Seattle Mariners open at home in three weeks and right now all bets are off. How about March Madness, where thousands gather in arenas across the country? Does anyone trust the NCAA with coming up with a plan to protect both athletes and fans as so little is still known about where the virus has spread? Let’s go a little further down the road on a crowded spring sports schedule. Can you imagine a Kentucky Derby run with no spectators? A Masters played with just players on the course? Again, no one really knows. Already, though, those with underlying medical conditions are being advised to stay away from crowds, and people 65 and older are at tremendous risk, too, And, really, how much fun will it be to be at a basketball game while listening with increasing

dread to sniffles from fans in the row behind? An unexpected sneeze could empty a row, or even a section. Players themselves are also at risk. Already NBA players are avoiding high-fives and autograph seekers, acting on league guidance, and MLB is telling players not to accept balls and pens from fans when signing autographs. And how about the possibility of players catching the virus from team-mates? In Florida yesterday, Cubs pitcher Yu Darvish was scratched from a scheduled start because of illness and he tweeted that he was worried about being in the clubhouse because he had a cough. Meanwhile, in Switzerland IOC President Thomas Bach insisted the Olympics will begin as scheduled in Tokyo in July. The words postponement and cancellation weren’t even brought

up in two days of IOC meetings, Bach said. Bach, of course, is protecting both the golden goose and the Olympic brand. But the bottom line is he can’t forecast how this will all end up any more than baseball commissioner Rob Manfred can. A number of Olympic qualifiers have already been postponed and are in limbo. And while next week’s lighting of the Olympic torch in Greece is still on, it’s hard to imagine a torch relay following as planned across Japan beginning March 26 if the virus is still spreading there. Right now, the biggest inconvenience for US sports fans is having to carry hand sanitiser and wait in longer lines at the washroom sinks. But events are proving to be as fast moving as the virus. That could change and change quick. Nobody really knows.

their AC75s for the first time. However, the event is in jeopardy due to the virus outbreak, which has seen sporting events across Italy altered or cancelled. Barker said they could only work with the information they had at the moment, which was

that at this stage the event would go ahead as planned. “I think you’d say with everything you read about in Italy, it sounds like it’s certainly a risky proposition right now, but I’m sure the guys running the event there are talking with the Italian

government and what have you to try and understand what’s required,” Barker said. “You hear about football matches with no one in the stadiums and all the travel bans around Northern Italy. So, definitely, you do wonder how likely it is that it will happen.”
