The first steps have been taken in a deal that could catapult Ashburton’s second river bridge from the district’s long-term radar on to its medium-term to-do list. When the government announced earlier this year it had allocated $3 billion over three years to invest in regional economic development through a Provincial Growth Fund (PGF), the Ashburton District Council saw an opportunity to secure funding for the district’s second bridge project.

This is likely to come with a $35 million-plus price tag. The council has taken the first steps in the two-pronged process of securing money from the PGF, lodging an application for business case funding. It has asked for $94,000 to prepare the case for project funding, but the all-up cost of this work is likely to be $300,000, with the balance coming from both the council and the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA), council chief executive Hamish Riach said. This application was lodged last

month. “We’re hoping we’ll hear before Christmas, then we can get on to the detailed business case in January and, given that so much work has already been done, this should only take a few months to prepare,” he said. He anticipates a business case could be lodged around April, but from that point there is far less clarity around timeframes.

The Rangitata Diversion Race company and three parties who appealed consents associated with a planned mega storage lake at Klondyke have met to work through their differences. Two days of mediation were held last month and another is scheduled in February aimed at the sides reaching agreement; if not, the matter moves on an expensive path to the Environment Court. RDR was granted 21 consents in July for the storage facility, which will make use of an existing take from the river and a new one for an additional 10 cumecs. It also allows the RDR to replace an underperforming bio-acoustic fish fence with a more efficient system of rotary drums. Ngai Tahu, a group of South Canterbury anglers and another irrigation company appealed the granting of the extra 10 cumecs; the anglers also appealed consents related to the fish fence. The big storage lake, estimated to cost $265 million to build, is about future-proofing water for irrigators, as well as creating the ability to use water for other purposes, like supplementing flows in the Ashburton River and managed aquifer recharge. Water could also be moved south for irrigation in South Canterbury. RDR chief executive Ben Curry said the matters discussed at mediation were confidential but

then since the scheme was built nearly 80 years ago – water is taken by consent from the Rangitata River and distributed by the 67km canal to irrigators across the Mid Canterbury plains. The water is also used for hydro-generation. Curry said the recent wet November had resulted in little demand for irrigation. “At this time of year, we would normally be seeing up to 100 per cent delivery to irrigators. Today, there’s about 5 to 10 per cent going to irrigators.” Trustpower is generating electricity from the remaining water, which could also have been put in storage if a facility was available. Government planning to improve water storage was highlighted as essential for future resilience against drought and climate change at a recent expert discussion, IrrigationNZ chief executive Andrew Curtis said. “More frequent droughts and more variable rainfall will affect both urban and rural communities and will mean that we will need to rethink how we manage water in the future. “For example with less rainfall forecast over summer in western areas of New Zealand, there will be more demand for water storage from both councils and farmers to provide a reliable water supply.” Curtis said local and regional water storage would be critical in the future for both urban and rural water users, and for the environment.

The bridge is currently in the council’s long term plan for construction to begin in 2026 but PGF funding could see work start earlier. “Will it be earlier than where it is? I absolutely hope so. It’s highly

likely to come forward if everything is granted,” he said Regional development minister Shane Jones had given the council cause for optimism with his talk about the funds value for ‘trees and bridges’, but Riach is

not getting too excited. “Even if we get every tick, there’s still a huge amount of work to do, a lot of processes to go through, but it’s under way and we’re certainly optimistic about funding for the business case,” he said.

There was clear community support for a second bridge and with its application the council was ‘in amongst it’. The PGF was an opportunity to try and bring that project forward, Riach said.

A man has claimed Ashburton’s latest big win of $1 million that was drawn last Saturday. The man, who has asked to remain anonymous, had only purchased a ticket for the lucky draw after his wife reminded him just before it was drawn to try his luck. “I was at home with my wife when the Lotto draw came on TV. As the numbers were coming out, I turned to my wife and said ‘Look at those numbers, surely no silly bugger will have them’,” he said. “Little did I know at the time, those were my numbers coming out of the machine.” Blissfully unaware of his success, the man went to bed and did not check his numbers on MyLotto until the morning. “When I logged into my MyLotto account, my ticket popped up and I watched as the numbers were circled off one by one. When the sixth number was circled, I thought, well that’ll be a few hundred bucks,” he said.

“It wasn’t until I scrolled down and saw a large number with a lot of zeros that I realised I’d won much more than that. “I yelled out at my wife to get up and come look at the computer. We could scarcely believe what we were seeing, so we decided to print the ticket straight away just in case we were imagining it.” When it comes to picking his numbers, it is a true lottery, by just selecting random numbers to go on his ticket. The couple celebrated with champagne with gold flecks in it, but are planning on spending their winnings more responsibly. “The timing truly couldn’t have been better as we’re planning to buy a house,” he said. The million dollar ticket followed another Ashburton first division success of $500,000, making it a lucky year for Ashburton with three first division wins. Ashburton’s biggest win came via a winning powerball ticket in 2016 which scooped $22.2 million for the ticket-holder.

Mid Canterbury dairy farmers are out of pocket again by an average $82,500 as a result of another Fonterra cut to the milk price and their town neighbours will feel the pinch as well. The dairy giant announced yesterday its 2018-19 forecast had dropped from a range of $6.25-$6.50 a kilogram of milksolids to $6-$6.30/kg. A 25 cents reduction will result in Mid Canterbury suppliers receiving $50 million less revenue from their milk with less money circulating around Ashburton and the outlying district. The average Mid Canterbury farmer will be hurting financially more than many other parts of the country because they produce more milk. Farmers typically dish up 330,000kg of milksolids from herds averaging 760 cows compared with the national average of 430 cows yielding 160,000kg. They had a pretty good inkling the milk price was vulnerable despite commodity prices finally rising at the GlobalDairyTrade (GDT) auction this week because of the seven consecu-

tive falls previously. Farmers have seen the payout drop from an originally promising $7/kg to $6.75/kg in August and again to a range of $6.25$6.50/kg in October before the latest cut. Fonterra chairman John Monaghan said the revised forecast was from demand failing to keep up with strong milk supplies globally, as reflected by downward GDT prices since May. Fonterra recommended farmers budget with caution as there remained unknown elements in the global supply and demand picture. Earnings per share were forecasted at 25 to 35 cents a share for the full year. The co-op revealed that its first-quarter revenue of $3.8 billion was down 4 per cent and sales volumes were back six per cent. The first quarter gross margin of $656m was down $14m from the same period last year. Chief executive Miles Hurrell said the co-op generally made a smaller proportion of its total annual sales in the first quarter because of the seasonal nature

of its milk supply. However, it provided an indication of challenges that needed to be addressed particularly for Australian ingredient, Greater China foodservice and Asia foodservice businesses, he said. Suppliers were informed the co-op was making progress with reviewing assets to turn around the first loss in 17 years of $196 million for the 2017-18 year. Monaghan said an agreement in principle had been reached with Beingmate that would result in Fonterra returning to full ownership of the Darnum plant by the end of the year and enter a multi-year agreement for Beingmate to buy its ingredients. “We are also looking at our ongoing ownership of Tip Top. … We want to see Tip Top remain a New Zealand based business and this is being factored into our options. He said Tip Top was its only ice cream business and while performing well had reached maturity as an investment. The co-op was months away from completing the review and remained committed to reducing debt levels by $800m by the end of the financial year, he said.

■ SUDDEN UNEXPECTED DEATH IN INFANCY

Promoting safe sleeping BY SUE NEWMAN

Safe sleep practices for babies is part of the post natal education given by every midwife to every new mother, but each year around 44 families suffer the grief of losing a baby to a sudden unexpected death in infancy (SUDI). To highlight the importance of safe sleep practices, the SUDI organisation has tagged today Safe Sleep Day, where the risk factors that can contribute to infant deaths are spelled out. The day is about encouraging communities and organisations to promote safe sleep practices in fun and creative ways, but the underlying message is a serious one, says Ashburton’s Hospital midwife manager Julie Dockrill. Safe practices include placing a baby in its own bed or if co-sleeping is desired, placing the baby in a woven bassinet or a pepi pod, not smoking, positioning the baby flat on its back to sleep and encouraging and supporting a mother to breastfeed. “Every mum gets education around safe sleep, it’s part of our discharge process and it’s part of the information all midwives give to new mothers,” Dockrill said. The message is also reinforced by midwives during home visits. While back sleeping could lead to a baby’s head reshaping, this normally righted itself by the time they were two or three, she said. “Research shows that babies have the perfect head shape with their own natural cushion at the back.” Many parents felt there were so many things they should have for a new baby but products made with natural fibres were always best, she said. Safe Sleep day was also a good opportunity to highlight safe sleep practices to caregivers and grandparents, Dockrill said.

Three years down the track, Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre is running like a well-oiled machine, but that doesn’t mean there are not improvements that can be made, says Ashburton District Council service delivery group manager Neil McCann. After its three year milestone, the management of the centre’s gym underwent a review by district councillors, who decided it was better kept in house rather than leased to a private operator. And now it’s time to take a look at the overall operation of the complex to ensure the way it’s managed and staffed today is fit for the future, McCann said. “We started out with a blank page and staffed the complex the way we believed we needed. This hasn’t changed since we opened. “Now we are asking ourselves have demands changed since we started and have we adjusted to meet the needs in the best way possible.” Staff had been given an opportunity to put forward ideas and solutions for issues they faced and suggestions had been gathered from user groups. From there a draft proposal had been developed, he said. The review was about ensuring the centre was well placed for the future and that resources were in the right places to deal with growing user demand, McCann said.

In brief Firefighters busy Firefighters across the district have been kept busy with a variety of call-outs this week. The Methven Unit responded to reports of a car on fire near Pudding Hill at about 2.30am on Wednesday. Nobody was in the vehicle, but it is believed to have been deliberately set alight, and police are making inquiries. The Hinds Unit responded to a minor structure fire at 7.48am on Monday, but fire chief Dave Kingsbury said staff had the situation under control when they arrived. It was an early start for Ashburton firefighters on Tuesday after they responded to a medical assist at 2.55am.

It was International Volunteer Day, and about 30 volunteers from around 10 organisations attended the planting, following a celebratory Dilmah Tea Party at Hotel Ashburton. The theme for 2018 is volunteers build resilient communities, and Moylan said Volunteering Mid and South Canterbury was always looking for more organisations to come on board in helping with goals such as this. “It gives them access to volunteers, access to training, advocacy and support,” Moylan said. There were about 80 organisations altogether which belonged to the group.

Monitoring rise welcomed The Ashburton Water Zone Committee is welcoming an increase in the monitoring of land-use practices that can affect community drinking supplies. Zone Committee Chair Bill Thomas said ensuring the community has a safe supply of drinking water was a non-negotiable priority for the committee. “In the past two years, we have seen greater awareness of the need to protect our community drinking water zones and ensure nearby land-uses are not impacting on water quality. “Earlier this year we signed off

on a new Safe and Sustainable Drinking Water priority outcome that will help ensure there is a sustainable supply of water that meets the needs of future generations and complies with drinking water standards. “Environment Canterbury’s increased focus on monitoring water quality and land-use compliance will help make sure this happens,” he said. As part of the increased monitoring programme, Environment Canterbury staff will be checking land use, water and discharge consents within and next to

community drinking water protection zones. Ashburton Zone Delivery Lead Janine Holland said the Ashburton Zone Team would be checking hundreds of consents during the next year as the monitoring programme rolls out. “There are just under 30 community drinking water protection zones in our district. These range from only a few metres in circumference to several hundred metres in circumference. Staff will be looking at consented activities which potentially impact on these zones.

“We will be particularly focused on checking compliance with consent conditions that could impact the quality and quantity of water being taken from a community water bore. “This includes effluent discharges, groundwater and surface water takes, land use practices or industrial activities,” she said. Much of the monitoring will be desktop analysis but site visits would be undertaken to high risk activities and locations. The monitoring programme got under way this month.

House prices in the Ashburton District are showing little signs of lifting, with Quotable Value putting the three months price change at just 1.4 per cent. In having a static housing market Ashburton joins most of the South Island’s local authorities, with only Mackenzie and coastal Dunedin showing any real growth over that period. Over the past 12 months, however, the Ashburton District has lagged behind many areas in house price growth, particularly those to the south. Invercargill, and all areas of Dunedin saw house price rises above 10 per cent. Queenstown Lakes joins 10 areas in the North Island in having a current average value for houses sold of $1 million plus. Buller remains the cheapest place in the South Island to buy a home at $191,998.

Tourist Grace Millane still missing A new photograph showing the last known sighting of missing tourist Grace Millane has been released by police. The blurry image – taken from CCTV security footage – shows the young woman dressed in a black dress and white shoes, with her brown hair down. The image was captured on Saturday night, about 7.15pm, in downtown Auckland near SkyCity, police said. It is the last time anyone has seen Millane, whose 22nd birthday was the next day. Detective Inspector Scott Beard said police were dealing with her family in the United Kingdom and were expecting her father to arrive today. “Her family member is coming out – obviously, they’re distraught. They’re on the other side of the world and they haven’t heard from her.” Beard said there was no evidence of foul play at this stage and police were speaking with people at the backpackers Millane was staying at – including those she was with on Saturday night. He would not confirm what was left at the room, but said her belongings remained there. Millane, who has been in New

Everyone is worried. Please make contact with your friends and family.’’ Millane’s brother, Michael Millane, posted on social media that the family had been calling his sister’s cellphone – but that it was going straight to voicemail. He said she had been staying at X Backpackers – which she described as a “party hostel’’ – and had been sharing a room with two other girls and a boy. “She spoke to someone in the family every day on WhatsApp, Facebook or FaceTime. The contact with us stopped on Thursday. “The last contact she had was with her roommate on Saturday morning. “Her disappearance was completely out of the blue.” - NZME

Agent ‘doing a service’ A US Border Patrol agent who confessed to killing four sex workers told investigators he wanted to “clean up the streets” of his Texas border hometown, a prosecutor said yesterday while announcing that a grand jury had indicted the man for capital murder. Webb County District Attorney Isidro Alaniz said he will seek the death penalty for the September slayings and that evidence presented to the grand jury showed Juan David Ortiz killed the women “in a cold, callous and calculating way.” “The scheme in this case, from Ortiz’s own words, was to clean up the streets of Laredo by targeting this community of individuals who he perceived to be disposable, that no one would miss and that he did not give value to,” Alaniz said at a news conference. Alaniz said Ortiz, 35, believed law enforcement didn’t do enough to curb prostitution, so he was “doing a service” by killing the women. A suspect can be charged with capital murder if he is suspected in more than one killing in the same scheme with an overarching motive, Alaniz said. Three of the women were shot to death, and the fourth was also shot but died of blunt force trauma. Alaniz said the horrific nature of the killings and Ortiz’s vigilante mentality were factors in his decision to pursue the death penalty. Ortiz, who has been held on murder charges in the Webb County jail on a $2.5 million bond since his September 15 arrest in Laredo, presents a clear danger to society, he said. somebody else – hunting the streets ... for this community of people and arbitrarily deciding who he was going to kill next.” Alaniz said Ortiz knew some of the victims but he wouldn’t elaborate on what kind of relationship they had. Melissa Ramirez, 29, was slain on September 3, and 42-year-old Claudine Luera was killed on September 13. On September 14, he picked up another woman, Erika Pena, who told investigators that Ortiz acted oddly when she brought up Ramirez’s slaying and later pointed a gun at her in a gas station, according to court documents. Pena said Ortiz grabbed her shirt as she tried to get out of his truck, but she pulled it off and ran, finding a state trooper who was refuelling his vehicle. Ortiz fled and, he later told investigators, he then picked up and killed his last two victims – 35-year-old Guiselda Alicia Cantu and 28-year-old Janelle Ortiz, a transgender woman whose birth name was Humberto Ortiz. With Pena’s help, authorities were able to track Ortiz to a hotel parking garage where he was arrested. “I believe that if Erika Pena would not have escaped that day that there would be more victims right now in this case,” Alaniz said. Ortiz also was indicted on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and unlawful restraint in the attack on Pena, and a charge of evading arrest or detention. The Border Patrol placed Ortiz on indefinite, unpaid suspension after his arrest. Yesterday, the agency did not respond to a request for an update on his employment status. - PA

‘Wolf pack’ deemed not guilty of rape In July 2016, a group of men in Pamplona, Spain, offered to walk an 18-year-old woman to her car. But instead of doing that, they led her to the lobby of a building, where they took turns filming themselves sexually assaulting her. Police arrested five men the next day, but in April, a Spanish court fell short of determining that they had raped her. The Guardian reported that the legal distinction between sexual abuse and rape in Spain comes down to whether the attack was violent or included intimidation. At the time, the court claimed that meant that the group was guilty of “continuous sexual abuse” rather than rape.

Yesterday, another Spanish court upheld that decision, which the woman’s lawyers have said does not go far enough. Now the case, which prompted protests and the formation of a committee to overhaul Spain’s penal code on sexual violence, heads to the country’s Supreme Court. In Spain, the perpetrators came to be known as the “wolf pack,” because they were members of a WhatsApp group by that name. The judge did not allow the jury to consider the WhatsApp chats among the men, who texted ‘us five are f***ing one girl’ and ‘there is video’ shortly after the attack. The video footage shows the

woman remaining still, her eyes shut. The defendants’ legal team argued that was proof that she had consented; the woman’s lawyers said she was too scared to move. “The defendants want us to believe that on that night they met an 18-year-old girl, living a normal life, who, after 20 minutes of conversation with people she didn’t know, agreed to group sex involving every type of penetration, sometimes simultaneously, without using a condom,” the Guardian quoted prosecutor Elena Sarasate as saying. The woman’s phone was also stolen by a member of the group. Sarasate argued that if they had consensual sex: “The ob-

vious thing would be to exchange phone numbers, not steal her phone”. Last month, in a separate case, a man and his nephew were found guilty of sexual abuse and not sexual assault or rape because the court couldn’t determine that they had used violence or intimidation while allegedly forcing a woman they met in a club to have sex and take part in another sexual act. The court determined that the men had indeed taken “advantage of her vulnerable nature, which, added to her alcohol and antidepressants, may have weakened her ability to defend herself, thus making the use of violent or intimidatory acts unnecessary,” the BBC reported. - PA

While he’s now best known for playing Dave Rafter in the trans-Tasman drama series Packed To The Rafters, things weren’t always so polished. Speaking to the Daily Mail Australia at the 2018 AACTA Awards, Thomson reflected on his biggest career regrets, revealing he once did a “cheesy” TV ad for ASB bank. He starred in not one but a series of ads alongside Lucy Lawless in the roles of doting parents to a baby named Stan, who were trying to gain financial security for their growing family. “They’re just so cheesy! I kind of wish I never did that.”

Recent research by the Real Estate Authority (REA) has shown that many people have a very relaxed approach to being honest when they’re selling a property. Some people justify not coming clean about everything because they think the onus is on the buyer to do their homework, or that if they can get away with it then it’s ok not to tell the full truth. “People tell themselves this behaviour is ok because they believe that successfully selling their property is the only thing that matters,” says REA chief executive Kevin Lampen-Smith. “The need to sell, and to get a good price, is often seen as a higher priority than the need to be completely honest.” Lampen-Smith says sellers thought that full disclosure would have an impact on whether the sale would go through. “One respondent said they didn’t want to open up any potential problems

and that they were completely selfish about it,” he says. “They were concerned that being honest about any problems with the property would mean that no one would want to buy it.” If, like most New Zealanders, you are selling with a licensed real estate agent, they will play an important role in this process. “When you sign an agency agreement (the legally binding document that sets out the contract between you and the real estate agency) you are asked to disclose or be honest about any known defects,” Lampen-Smith says. “If you tell the agent about a significant problem with a property but ask them not to tell anyone else, they may need to cancel the agreement and walk away.” Lampen-Smith says that when you’re talking to an agent about selling the property, the best course of action is to tell them everything you know about

the property, no matter how small you think it is. “They’re the experts and their professional reputation is at stake if they mislead a buyer. If you’re still not sure what to disclose, the real test is to put yourself in a potential buyer’s shoes. If you were the buyer, would you want to know about unconsented building work, potential leaks or unstable ground?” In an ideal world, every potential buyer will do all the necessary research about a property (Lampen-Smith suggests visiting settled.govt.nz for more advice). The consequences of not doing so are very real. Selling a property is stressful enough without adding in the threat of the sale being cancelled or of possible legal action further down the track. “At best, any serious problems will be uncovered by due diligence and you’ll look like a bit of a fool, but the buyer will either walk away or begin

negotiations that take these defects into account,” Lampen-Smith says. “At worst, if the sale goes through and the buyer then discovers that they’ve been sold a lemon, you may end up in the Disputes Tribunal or engaged in more serious court action.” Neither scenario will leave you feeling very positive about the experience and has the potential to have a negative impact on your future. If you’re upfront with your real estate agent about everything (and you talk to the council about getting any additions or alterations certified), you’ll be on a surer footing when it comes to negotiating with potential buyers further down the track. Harvest your garlic. Traditionally gardeners do this on the longest day of the year – December 21. However, I like to keep a lookout for the leaves drying and yellowing off to know when to harvest my garlic. Gently dig them up, being careful to not yank on the leaves or you might tear the stalks off. Then brush off the dirt and string them up to dry, in an airy spot indoors. Dig up your new potatoes. Not sure if they’re ready? A flowering potato plant is a great sign that they’re ready to be harvested. Depending on varieties, many people leave them to dry off for a few weeks after the flowers appear. Hopefully just in time for Christmas lunch.

Keep up your planting. Grow the summer herbs and veges that thrive this time of the year. Basil, chives, cucumbers, eggplants, chillies,

pumpkins and watermelon. If it’s already very warm where you are, plant early in the evening and water well. Stake your tomatoes. When it gets really dry, you can place newspaper on the ground and cover with mulch or compost. This will help keep the moisture levels constant. But avoid watering their leaves, as this encourages disease. The same goes for your capsicums, chillis and climbers like cucumbers and eggplants. Enjoy your new roses blooming. Remember to deadhead them though, to ensure another round of flowering. Prune back your hedges that have bushed up and lost their shape over spring. Plant summer annuals like petunias and impatiens. Petunias love full sun, whereas impatiens cope well in shady spots. Grow some sunflowers in your garden too. Planting them now should have them flowering around midFebruary. Finally, keep on top of your weeding. At this time of the year, you can turn your back for a day and the weeds will know!

ia has come a long way. Ever since Peter Schreyer, former Audi designer, became head designer at Kia Motors, the range’s looks have progressed in leaps and bounds. With a former BMW designer recently joining the team as Head of Styling, the future is looking very bright for Kia. Locally, Kia has gone from being at the lower end of the shortlist, to best-selling SUV two years running. The new design direction has played a significant part, but a nod has to be made to the fact that Kia has achieved top spot – ahead of all other car brands – for dependability in overseas test. And let’s not forget that Kia have a leading warranty programme with 5 years’ cover and Roadside Assist. New Zealand’s taste for SUVs has also helped, with the range including the highly popular Kia Sportage and the impressive Kia Sorento, ticking the boxes for great contenders in both the mid-size and large 7-seater SUV segments. This brings us nicely to the Kia Sorento. As a 7-seater, it’s up against popular brands like Toyota, Volkswagen, Mazda and Ford. Those shopping in this segment would very much benefit from giving the Kia a go. RETURN OF THE ROTARY? M

azda’s design boss has confirmed a production version of the company’s stunning RX-Vision concept is still in the works. The concept car was originally revealed in 2015, when it was widely anticipated to herald the return of the rotary engine to the company’s engine line-up, packaged in a new range-topping sports car. Since its reveal, progress reports have been few and far between. But during the reveal of the all-new Mazda3 – which shares some design elements with the RX-Vision – Mazda’s

chief design boss Ikuo Maeda shared a rare update with AutocarUK. When asked about whether the RX-Vision could ever go into production, Maeda said: “I hope I can say yes – this is my dream.” He went on to confirm he has prepared a design for a new sports car that “is kind of a production car”. Maeda added: “When it is decided as a brand that we need a sports car, that’s when we will produce the car. As you know, we already have the MX-5. If we need a

more premium sports car, then we need to have a serious think about it.” In October, Mazda confirmed the rotary engine will return as a ‘newly developed range extender’ in 2020. Mazda won’t say how big the rotary extender will be, but add that it will be small, quite and developed to run on both liquid petroleum and LPG gas. By 2030, Mazda expects that internal combustion engines coupled with some form of electrification will account for 95 per cent of the vehicles it produces, and full-electric battery electric vehicles will account for 5 percent. Hopefully one of those models will be a new sports car, perhaps called the RX-9?

2018 Car of the Year T

he crowded SUV market just keeps becoming even more so! And the definition of just what features and abilities are needed to justify being called an SUV, like being all-wheel-drive, having decent ground clearance and off-road credentials in many cases, have been forgotten. But not by Subaru, who reckon this new Forester is the ideal SUV to provide Kiwis and their families, with a chance to upgrade their fun! For they figure that while many adults and kids have swapped skateboards for hover boards; pedal-powered mountain bikes for e-versions and paddleboards for kayaks, that wherever the fun is at, this latest, larger, fifth generation Forester will take you there. And do so in style! While it is very comfortable, both about town and on longer SH1 journeys, because of its 220mm ground clearance, constant all-wheel-drive and X-mode off-road system it is very well set up to be able to take you place most places that you wish, or have the courage to venture to. It will also get you home again, especially so in the Premium, whose X-mode has additional dedicated modes for both mud and deep snow. There’s three models, the entry level Sport at $39,990, the Sport Plus at $44,990 and the Premium as driven – $47,490 (all plus ORC’s. They are all five-seaters and have a new version of the 2.5litre Boxer petrol engine together with an upgraded 7-step Lineartronic CVT. They also sit on Subaru’s latest platform. Looks-wise they have a purposeful,

function rather than form, look about them, which means excellent all-round visibilty combined with the longer wheelbase, more passenger space, particularly so for those in the rear. Other standard gear includes dual-zone air-con, digital radio, LED headlights and the excellent, camera based EyeSight preventative safety system technology. This includes an array of driver assist features including adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking control, lane keep assist/departure warning and more. The Sport Plus and Premium adds satnav and even more tech including reverse automated braking and an extra smart driver monitoring system (DMS). The latter not only uses facial recognition to detect and warn of driver distraction and or drowsiness, but also recognises and automatically selects seating preferences and more, and does so for up to five individual drivers. The Premium also comes with responsive steering, adaptive LED headlights, leather furnishings, (although front seat heaters are absent) a Harman Kardon 9 speaker sound system and a sunroof. The roof mounted “mother in law” top-box as pictured was, as for the towbar, part of a launch promotion.

While the engine is of course a 2.5-litre Boxer, it’s a new version developing 136kW and 239Nm of torque at 4400rpm. It proved both strong and ever-willing (can become a little vocal when worked hard) and Subaru’s Lineartronic CVT, which is one of the better of these, works in very well. It clearly helps out with fuel use, as does -SI-Drive, especially when in its I (intelligent) mode for the quoted overall figure is just 7.4L/100km. But for those who wish, there’s also an S mode. Previous mention has been made of the about town and open road comfort. While this supple ride arises because of the long travel suspension and there’s some expected body movement when hustled through corners, it handles with an enduring feeling of capability, predictability, and tenacious grip. Likewise it is re-assuringly sure-footed on gravel and rough roads. In keeping with all the above the quality of both the cabin and its fit-out are suitably classy, both to look at and to use. It’s a very pleasant place to be in and the dials and controls, together with the 8-inch touchscreen are definitely user friendly. Both front seats have power operation and there’s plenty of adjustment for the driving position. In addition to increased space and comfort of the rear seat there’s also user -friendly stuff for those therein including two fast-charging USB ports. Then the luggage space of 520 litres (there’s a full size spare below) is easily loaded via a fast operating, powered tail gate on both the Sport Plus and Premium.

sangYong has unveiled the Rexton DKR to compete in next year’s Dakar Rally, the world’s toughest rallying event, following the brands successful campaigning of a Tivoli inspired car in the 2018 event. Developed by SsangYong Motorsport in Spain, the new Rexton DKR utilises a dune buggy body style with the muscular design features of the new SsangYong Rexton SUV. The car is built to be strong, fast and light to overcome the many different challenges posed by the race. The 11-day 2019 Dakar starts in Peru on January 6, concluding in Lima on the 17th. With 10 hard stages, competitors race over 5000 kilometres, 70 per cent of which is across dunes and sand, with 3000 kilometers of special stages. This is the 40th Dakar Rally, and the tenth since moving to Latin America. The Rexton DKR is rear wheel drive and will compete in the T1-3 class (two-wheel drive petrol vehicles). It is powered by a 450hp V8 race engine, and with a kerb weight of less than 1900 kg, accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62mph) in 4.4 seconds, with a maximum speed of 195 km/h (122 mph). The engine is mounted in a rearcentral position for balanced weight distribution between the front and rear axles, and uses a new MoTeC programmable switch to allow engine mapping

changes in real time while eliminating all fuses and relays to enhance electrical reliability. There is an all-new sequential-manual 6-speed Sadev SL90-23 gearbox, tri-disc ceramic clutch that will take up to 1500Nm of torque, and a Torsen selflocking differential unit with a high lock capacity under acceleration. It is equipped with 17-inch Yokohama Geolandar M/T G003 37X12.50R17 tyres for durability, traction and absorption over the most arduous terrain, which are fitted to Raceline 17x7 alloy wheels and can be self-inflated from the cockpit. Lightweight Pyrotect fuel tanks are also included. The body is mounted on a multitubular chassis made from chrome-molybdenum and TIG welded to give good torsional stiffness. It has a good attack angle and aerodynamics, is agile and easy to handle. Suspension features double arms, King shock absorbers and helical extension springs, with AP brakes providing good heat dissipation and resistance to fade. The car will be driven by Spanish driver Óscar Fuertes with Diego Vallejo as co-driver, the same team that competed so successfully in last year’s Dakar Rally in a rally car based on the SsangYong Tivoli. With less than half of the cars completing the 2018 event, they were the second rookie team to make it to the finishing line and 32nd overall.

Suzuki Series back on track

or three weeks each December, the speed of life quickens as the annual Suzuki Series weaves its magic. Bike racers, engineers and mechanics, team managers, sponsors and the many fans all become engrossed in this special ‘mini’ season of pre-nationals racing. This year’s annual three-round Suzuki Series will kick off at Taupo’s Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park on Sunday, December 9, and there’s no let-up with the series heading to the Manfeild Circuit Chris Amon, on the outskirts of Feilding, for round two just a week later, on December 16, before its traditional Boxing Day finale on Whanganui’s world-famous Cemetery Circuit. It has been 10 years since the Suzuki Series was first created, in 2008, and its popularity continues to grow, with the public street event on Boxing Day, in particular, drawing large crowds. The entry list for the premier Formula One class is again both long and illustrious this season, but if Taupo’s Scotty Moir can pick up where he left off last year, then the Suzuki star will rank among the favourites to win again in 2018. However, there is a trio of other former Suzuki Series winners who will rank right up there alongside him – Liechtenstein rider Horst Saiger (Yamaha), Wellington’s Sloan Frost (Suzuki) and Whakatane’s Tony Rees (Honda). Glen Eden’s Daniel Mettam is another

who should feature in the F1 class on Sunday. He won the Suzuki Series’ 600cc Formula Two trophy in 2015 and the national 600cc supersport title in 2016. The Suzuki star finished overall runnerup in the Suzuki Series’ F1 class last year and finished third in the superbike class in the 2018 nationals. Moir had arrived at Whanganui’s final round of the series on Boxing Day last year

with a slender seven-point lead over his two key rivals, Aucklander Mettam and Whakatane’s Mitch Rees, but he simply refused to let the pressure tell on him. The then 33-year-old Moir dominated this traditional post-Christmas race meeting at Whanganui, wrapping up the Suzuki Series’ premier F1 class title, his first major road-race title win. He also celebrated a start-to-finish win in the event’s coveted Robert Holden Memorial feature race. The Suzuki Series also offers races for Formula Two (600cc), Formula Three, Classics (pre-89), sports bikes, super motard bikes and sidecars, so there’s no shortage of on-track action. A new competition was hatched last year for fledgling riders – the GIXXER Cup class, reserved for riders aged between 14 and 21 and all on board identical 150cc Suzuki GSX150F model bikes – and it returns to the programme again this year. There are expected to be at least 18 riders on the starting grid in the GIXXER Cup class, with entries received from as far afield as Australia, Greymouth, Nelson, Sanson, Rotorua and Auckland. Hamilton brothers Caleb and Jesse Stroud are among the GIXXER Cup entries, these two siblings the sons of Suzuki’s nine-time former national superbike champion Andrew Stroud and so, if genes count for anything, they will certainly be worth watching. Tigers all set to roar

riumph New Zealand’s new 2019 Tiger 800 and 1200 model range of big cats is a step up from previous offerings. The 2019 Tigers – with the exception of the Tiger Sport that remains the same, for now – feature a host of upgrades over the 2018 model range, not in the least the addition of Triumph’s brilliant TFT interface that debuted on the Street Triple 765, and is now standard equipment on all New Zealand models. The new range starts at $23,490 with the Tiger 800 XRX which, as the base roadbiased offering, features alloy wheels and the sublime 70kW 800cc inline triple, that is shared across the entire Tiger 800 range. Forks for the base bike are non-adjustable 43mm USD Showa units with a Showa monoshock and a hydraulically adjustable preload, also shared across the range. The road-biased Tiger 800 range tops out with the $26,590 Tiger XRT. This swaps out the non-adjustable Showa forks for units that are adjustable for rebound and compression damping and includes more features to the TFT user interface and full LED lighting – including extra rider modes and daytime running lights. The more adventure-capable XC models – starting with the XCX at $24,690 and topping out with the XCA at $26,990 – swap out the alloy wheels for spoked units, with the front wheel, increased in size from 19 to 21in, while the rear wheel remains at 17in diameter.

The XCA features even more off-road goodies, including billet aluminium pegs and radiator protection over the already impressive list of added off-road equipment featured on the XCX. The Tiger 1200 range enters our market with the XR as its base and is priced from $24,990. The new Tiger 1200 – incidentally, the Ti-

ger Explorer nameplate has been dropped for the 2019 model year – is lighter than the previous models, with the XR models shedding 2kg while the XC models drop a whopping 10kg. The base 1200 however, sheds more than just weight compared to its stablemates and foregoes plenty of the updated features that make the Tiger 1200 the

must-have big cat, such as Triumph’s TSAS electronic suspension system or keyless ignition, both of which enter the range with the XRX model. The TSAS electronically adjustable suspension system uses 48mm WP forks and a WP monoshock and is linked in and controlled by the gorgeous TFT dash unit. The up-specced Tigers also benefit from cornering ABS and TCS thanks to an IMU, and keyless ignition, that adds to the sense of control the new Tigers have over the old. Riding the base Tiger 800 – the XRX – on the road at the launch, it was nice to see that despite the bike being a base model, it is still handsomely equipped. The Tiger 1200 XRT brings to the table enough technology to make you wince, including Corning LED lights and a quickshifter for the 6-speed gearbox. Out on the road it gobbles up the kilometres with ease and offers a serious challenge to the dominance of the BMW R 1200 GS as a comfortable two-up tourer – with even the pillion benefiting from a heated seat and generous grab rails. Add to this the joyful 3-cylinder engine that produces 103.7kW, and you’re not likely to get left behind by your riding companions. This Tiger has the teeth to handle anything you throw at it. Regardless of which takes your fancy, the new Tiger range from Triumph has the teeth needed to shine in the heavily competitive adventure motorcycling market.

Miso chicken and mushroom burgers Serves 4

■ Heat the oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Add the onion and a little salt and cook, stirring, for 10 minutes then add the mushrooms and cook for a further 5 minutes. Set aside. ■ Cut the chicken breasts in half to get 4 thin fillets of an even thick-

ness. In a shallow dish, combine the 2T of miso with the mirin and vinegar. Add the chicken, stirring to coat well. Leave to marinate for 10 minutes. ■ In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise with the 2t miso paste. Heat a barbecue, grill pan or frying pan to medium. Cook the chicken pieces for 4 minutes then turn, top each with a piece of cheese, and cook for a fur-

Focus on fleeing drivers, not police I

t’s been another tough week in Christchurch with yet another tragedy on the roads as someone flees police. Wednesday morning will have brought up a whole heap of unwanted hurt and emotion for a lot of individuals after two people were killed after their vehicle, which had minutes earlier been fleeing from police, crashed into a power pole. This comes hot on the heels of a similar accident last month where a young girl was killed when the driver of the vehicle she was a passenger in did exactly the same thing. As is always the case in such

instances there have been calls for reviews into the way police handle pursuits that involve drivers fleeing at high speeds. How anyone can point a finger at the police for doing their job in such an instance is mindboggling. It’s not their decision for those involved to put the foot down and try to get away and

it’s certainly not their decision to drive in such a manner that puts the lives of everyday citizens at risk. People will rest far easier knowing that there are people out there who make it their mission to try and take dangerous drivers off our roads. If someone is spotted driving at a speed higher than 100km per hour in a zone which holds a speed limit of 50km per hour, you’d expect them to be chased by police. What that person then does when faced with the option of pulling over to face the consequences is their own decision – but unfortunately, those in the

car with them, often don’t have a choice – and that’s where the real tragedy lies when events like earlier this week unfold. The police have their own process that must be followed in a situation where there is a fleeing driver. Safety is the number one reason when it comes to decision making and in both recent incidents it appears that the right decision was made by police when the circumstances presented themselves. So, why the questioning of motives and decisions by police? Shouldn’t the questions of motives and decisions be directly

pointed toward the person behind the wheel? They made the choice to flee. Not the police. There may be a rigorous investigation into both of the recent incidents and without a doubt the actions of the police involved will come under the spotlight – but we, as the people of New Zealand, need to stand behind our police officers. Remove the power to stop a driver who is travelling at ridiculous speeds and you would almost guarantee that things will become a whole lot worse in terms of accidents and, sadly, deaths on our roads.

Today’s highlight in history: On Dec. 7, 1941, Japan launched a surprise attack on the US Navy base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii as part of its plan to conquer Southeast Asian territories; the raid, which claimed some 2400 American lives, prompted the United States to declare war against Japan the next day. On this date: In 43 BC, Roman statesman and scholar Marcus Tullius Cicero was slain at the order of the Second Triumvirate. In 1911, China abolished the requirement that men wear their hair in a queue, or ponytail. In 1917, during World War One, the United States declared war on Austria-Hungary. In 1946, fire broke out at the Winecoff Hotel in Atlanta; the blaze killed 119 people, including hotel founder W. Frank Winecoff. hat makes a great concert? For me it’s guitar based rock. It’s being able to clearly hear each instrument if you focus in on one. It’s vocals that aren’t drowned out by the rest of the band. It’s a polished performance but still raw enough that you have no doubts about lip syncing. All of the above are important, but it’s more than that! It’s about the experience! Who you are with and what you do before and after the concert are all part of the package. With all these things in mind, The Church concert on Tuesday night is without doubt one of the best I have been to. It’s the second time I’ve seen the band. The first was several years ago at a Villa Maria Winery concert. They were the first act, followed by Devo and Simple Minds. They were the reason I went to that show. In saying that, I really enjoyed the other two acts, in fact I would have to say Devo stole the show that day, but Steve Kilbey and the lads were the star attraction for me. Tuesday’s concert was a cel-

Town Hall in Queen Street. Wow! What an awesome venue for a concert. The acoustics were outstanding. It was a big sound but yet a very intimate concert at the same time. You know how you hear of bands like the Rolling Stones or U2 getting up for an impromptu set in front of a few hundred people at a pub or a club, but you’re never lucky enough to be part of the crowd? It felt like that! Some of the second half songs I didn’t know, I have five albums and consider myself a true fan but as at 2014, Kilbey had 750 original songs registered with Australian copyright agency Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA). So I can be excused for not knowing a few of them. I loved every one of the songs they played though. The before and after were fantastic. Three of my oldest and closest mates, Andy Smith, Charlie Jaine, Cam Bruce and my brother Mark enjoyed an afternoon on Cam’s second storey deck in Beachlands, East Auckland looking out over the Pine Harbour Marina there. The beers flowed but not as

ebration of the Starfish album being 30 years old. They played every song from the album in the first part of the show. Exactly the same format as Bryan Adams and his Reckless album anniversary concert that Manda and I saw just outside Memphis. Although The Church didn’t give us as many ‘hits’ in the second half of the show as Adams did. I guess that’s just not Kilbey’s style. He’d find that corny I reckon. They did give us a rousing edition of Unguarded Moment but it was the only track they played from the Of Skins and Heart album which is one of my favourite albums of all time. The concert was originally set down for Spark Arena, but I guess due to a lack of ticket sales and it being Tuesday night, it was moved to the Auckland

thick and fast as the stories, as we relived the past! There were several tears streaming down my cheeks from the laughter moments in between ripping strips off each other. During the concert, when the loopy juice had really kicked in, there were lots of man hugs, with back slaps and “We really need to do this more” and “It’s so good to catch up mate” and even some slurred “I love you man” thrown in for good measure. It will be stashed away in my memory files as one of the best concerts I have been to, for many more reasons than the music. It was a great catch up and we have all committed to doing it at least once a year and to be fair I don’t think our livers could handle any more than that! Pragmatism needed on ag emissions climate change By Gavin Evans An overly purist treatment of agricultural gases in climate change policy risks slowing this country’s response and politicising the process, the chairman of the Interim Climate Change Committee says. Debate over the relative contribution of methane and nitrous oxide, and whether the former is a flow gas, risks distracting from the more pressing task of getting emissions from agriculture into the climate regime somewhere, David Prentice said in Wellington yesterday. While the country’s climate change polices need to be science-based, he said there is also a need for pragmatism and buy-in, given the pace of action needed. Five scientists would give five different answers on how agricultural gasses should be treated, he told delegates at the New Zealand Emissions Workshop. What is needed is action. “We must de-politicise the issue as much as we can to move forward,” he said. “We must use science as a base for any decisions that we make, but any decisions now need to be done on a pragmatic perspec-

tive,” he said. “That methane argument – it is important, but we must not let ourselves get caught in it.” The Labour-led Government has pledged to get the economy to net-zero emissions by 2050 and is trying to get cross-party support for a new legislative framework. But it has already damaged its policy credibility by persisting with a pre-election target for 100

It was specifically tasked with advising the government on how to implement the renewable generation target and how agriculture – which accounts for close to half the country’s gross emissions – can be brought into the emissions trading scheme. Prentice said polling as part of the Net Zero Carbon Bill consultation was encouraging and showed broad consensus on the need to include agricultural emissions. Even farming groups understood the need to take action. What farmers particularly wanted, he said, was something that was relatively simple, that set a clear direction on what was required and guidance on how best to minimise those impacts. t’s been another rollercoaster ride for markets this week, after the US and China agreed to a 90-day trade truce following the working dinner between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping at the conclusion of the G20 meeting on Saturday in Argentina. Monday saw investors cheer the halt on tariffs but the optimism quickly faded, with Wall Street tumbling more than 3 per cent on Tuesday. Trump said trade negotiations with China have already started and was trying to determine whether “a real deal with China is actually possible”. He added that if talks fail, he will be known as a “tariff man”. Trump agreed to leave the current 10 per cent tariffs in place on more than $US200b worth of Chinese goods. However, this could prove to be a temporary reprieve, with the tariffs to be raised to 25 per cent if an agreement cannot be reached. US markets were closed Wednesday, as the nation mourned former President, George H. W. Bush. Markets across the globe have also been rattled by the flattening of the US Treasury yield curve, with the yield on the three-year US Treasury note surpassing its five-year counterpart on Monday. As we head into the historically strong December month, the local NZX 50 is on track for its seventh straight annual gain. The benchmark remains up 4.6 per cent this year, but is well short of last year’s 22.0 per cent rise. A bidding war erupted for Trade Me this week after private US equity firm, Hellman & Friedman,

made an indicative, non-binding proposal to acquire 100 per cent of the shares in the company for $6.45 per share. The offer was slightly higher than the $6.40 offer Apax Partners announced two weeks ago. Both offers are non-binding and indicative pending completion of due diligence and other conditions. Apple grower, Scales, said it expects operating earnings to be at the top end, or slightly exceed, the current guidance range of $58m to $65m. Meanwhile, Z Energy said it welcomed the Government’s announcement that the retail fuel market has been selected as the subject of the first Commerce Commission market study. Dairy prices got a lift at the latest Global Dairy Trade auction, following seven consecutive falls. The headline index gained 2.2 per cent, with whole milk powder rising 2.5 per cent. Butter milk powder saw the most dramatic move, surging 16.9 per cent, while cheddar was the only product to mark a decline, falling 2.2 per cent. Fonterra lowered its forecast farmgate milk price range from $6.25-$6.50 to $6.00-6.30 per kg of milksolids, a second downgrade for the 2019 year.

Fonterra chairman, John Monaghan, blamed the cut on strong global milk supply relative to demand, which has also driven down the GDT in recent months. The company said demand from China and Asia remains strong, however, noted geopolitical disruption is impacting demand from countries that traditionally buy a lot of fat products. Across the Tasman, the Reserve Bank of Australia kept its interest rate at 1.5 per cent, as widely expected, with Governor Philip Lowe commenting “the low level of interest rates is continuing to support the Australian economy”. The economy grew more slowly than expected in the third quarter, amid broad weakness in construction, retail and the farming sector. Gross domestic product expanded 0.3 per cent in the three months through September from the prior quarter, and 2.8 per cent from a year earlier. Economists had expected 0.6 per cent growth on quarter and a 3.3 per cent year-on-year increase. Government spending on infrastructure, rising gas exports, and improving business investment are helping maintain growth. The All Stars’ runner led throughout on night one, made a mid-race move to sit parked and win easily on Tuesday night and should lead throughout again from gate four at Cranbourne. Another Kiwi, Im Pats Delight, looks the only real danger, but he will need plenty of luck from an inside back row draw (gate eight). Debut win for Belle Three-year-old filly Burgundy Belle has been earmarked for a possible tilt at black-type after her impressive debut victory in the Nulook Aluminium Maiden at Pukekura Raceway yesterday. The daughter of Burgundy jumped away well from barrier two under Shafiq Rusof. Mid Canterbury’s senior cricketers head to Invercargill today knowing that a win against Southland in their Hawke Cup zone match this weekend will give their season a massive boost. Southland are the current Hawke Cup holders and a challenge against them awaits the winner of the southern zone, and Mid Canterbury’s hopes are high this season that the challenge will be theirs. Mid Canterbury coach Garfield Charles said a win against Southland in this weekend’s two-day match could put his side well on the front foot. Mid Canterbury’s first scheduled Hawke Cup game against South Canterbury was a washout, as was the other game scheduled for that weekend, meaning all teams took five points from the round.

When Mitch Marsh joked in the UAE that he would never bat for Australia at No.4 again, he had little idea there was worse news to come. Twelve months ago, Marsh was celebrating a maiden test century in his home town as Australia regained the Ashes with a thumping victory in Perth. He now finds himself dumped from the test team, battling to reclaim his ODI spot ahead of next year’s World Cup and a peripheral figure in the national T20 set-up. A devastated Marsh wryly noted after the Pakistan series that the experiment at No.4 was unlikely to continue. - AAP

In the only other games played so far North Otago lost to South Canterbury on first innings and Otago Country beat Southland on first innings. That meant heading into this weekend two teams are on 13 points and three teams are on five points. “So if we can get over Southland this weekend and finish with either 13 or possibly 17 points, then I think we are going to be looking good for a challenge,” Charles said. Mid Canterbury head to Invercargill with a strong side, although they will be without their captain and wicket keeper Matt Winter, who is staying home due to a family bereavement. Cameron Jopson has been brought in to the team and will wear the gloves against Southland, while James Southby is set to captain the side for the first time.

“James has captained a lot of our junior rep sides in the past, so he is not new to captaincy,” Charles said. With both Winter and key batsman Des Kruger unavailable for Mid Canterbury’s next Hawke Cup match in the new year, making Southby captain ensures some consistency for the next two games, Charles said. This weekend’s squad also features two young players set to make their Hawke Cup debut, Canterbury Under-19 players Richard Turpie and Will Graham, and Charles said they will be valuable in a side where the strength looks to be in the bowling. Shaun Stagg, Deon Biggs and sole spinner Jay Houston will also add depth. Batting has been the key work-on for the Mid Canterbury side in recent seasons, and Charles said that Kruger and Southby have both been in fine

form with the bat this season. “They’ve both been in good nick, so long may that continue, and if we can get the batsmen to come to the party I’m backing our bowling attack to do some damage,” Charles said. The biggest issue could be the weather. Mid Canterbury make the long drive to Invercargill today, with a forecast of drizzle on Saturday and showers on Sunday in front of them. “The one thing we can’t do anything about is the weather,” Charles said.

Cleary underwent major ankle surgery that will delay his pre-season until the end of January, while Maloney repaired some neck damage that dented his finals run. The veteran fiveeighth is expected to be back in full training just after Christmas. “It’s just a build-up over time. It’s been deteriorating over plenty of years, and just got to the point that it needed a few running repairs,” Maloney said. “It seems a bit (scary) being the neck, but as soon as I spoke to them about it, it wasn’t anything around the spinal cord.” - AAP

‘I’m here to win’ BY DAVID SKIPWITH Former Warriors star and new Sharks signing Shaun Johnson says he bears no grudges against his old club and declared he made the move to Cronulla to win an NRL premiership. Fronting Sydney media for the first time since joining Cronulla, Johnson admits he took a pay cut to join the Sharks on a three-year deal, and said if he wanted to earn more money he would have remained at the Warriors. The 28-year-old Kiwi international joined his new team-mates and Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan at

Southern Cross Group Stadium at training yesterday morning, after being granted a release last week from the final year of his million-dollar per season contract with the Warriors. Despite the acrimonious manner in which he left New Zealand, Johnson refused to bad-mouth the Auckland-based outfit, and said money was never a factor in his decision to part ways with the club he debuted for back in 2011. “They’re a club that want to do well,” said Johnson. “They’re a club that’s looking to win a premiership and if they don’t see me as worthy of what they were paying me that’s fine. “People will say you’re only worth X amount but at the end of the day it’s irrelevant. “We were all playing footy long before we got paid for it. “If it was all about the money I would have stayed there. “I would have stayed and played my contract out. “I’m here to win a premiership. “I know I can add value. “I believe in myself, it doesn’t matter what they’re paying me.” After making a grand final appearance in his rookie season, Johnson and the Warriors failed to feature in the playoffs for six long years before they finally scraped into the top eight this season.

Their 2018 finals campaign was fleeting however, with the mercurial playmaker coming under fire for failing to deliver in the Warriors’ week one qualifying-final defeat to the Penrith Panthers in Sydney in September. The lure of joining a consistent top four team was a big factor in him joining the Shane Flanagan coached 2016 premiers, and Johnson is excited about the Sharks title prospects in 2019. “I think that would be the most important thing to any player playing this game. “That’s why you do it,” he said. “There are 15 teams out there with the exact same goal. “That’s all of our mindset and that’s why I believe this is the greatest comp in the world.” Having owned the No. 7 jersey in his eight seasons at the Warriors, Johnson is set to move one spot wider and play fiveeighth for the Sharks, alongside halfback and former Warriors halves partner Chad Townsend. Johnson’s legion of supporters can expect to get their first glimpse of him in the Sharks’ colours during their pre-season trial games against Manly in Sydney on February 23, and Newcastle at Maitland on March 2. The Sharks will then open their 2019 NRL campaign with a Friday night away clash against the Newcastle Knights at McDonald Jones Stadium on March 15. - NZME

Croquet New Zealand development officer Greg Bryant was in the district, spending time coaching at the Waireka Croquet Club on Saturday and Sunday, and again on Wednesday. Bryant was responsible for youth development, coach development and player development across the coun-

Bryant played international croquet from 1990 through to today and has won four New Zealand opens in his time along with a number of doubles titles, but his biggest achievement as a player was being part of the New Zealand team in 2014 that won the Mac-

There were 13 golf croquet players from Waireka there for his morning session on Wednesday, and three Waireka association croquet players along with one from Methven for his afternoon session.
