New era for Rakaia

The Rakaia Medical Centre, established by a community trust determined to keep GP services in its town, is now moving into private ownership. Dr Sue Fowlie and husband Colin Steven have bought the business established by the Rakaia Medical Centre Trust in 2004 and no-one could be happier with a move that puts it out of business, than trust members themselves. Fowlie has been clinical direc-

tor and practising GP at the centre since 2016 and said she was privileged to work with a team that worked very hard to provide the best possible care for its patients. “In four years we’ve moved the clinic forward. It’s in a great place with brilliant staff,” she said. And while she has plans in mind to grow the services offered, Fowlie said there would be no immediate changes made. “For the people and patients in Rakaia and the wider communi-

ty we’ll continue giving the same service we deliver now. The big thing will be working out what is needed because we must provide the services that people are wanting and needing.” She is a part of the Ashburton Service Level Alliance and sits on the Canterbury Clinical Network Alliance leadership team, where she provides a rural perspective. She says she is keen to explore opportunities for Rakaia’s practice to provide services that might benefit the wider district.

Fowlie said she was committed to encouraging younger GPs to consider rural practice options and is keen to provide training opportunities in Rakaia. “I’ve got great staff here and while it might sound a bit bizarre, we’ve got great patients too and I’m happy to know that I’ll be here for the long term. Everyone here works towards giving the best care to our patients and that’s what matters most. And we’ll keep giving our best to them, our patients’ wellbeing is at the centre

of all of this.” For the Rakaia Medical Trust, the sale of the practice was the end of an era, but it was an ending that delighted trust members, chairwoman Nicki Webster said. “The centre is moving into wonderful hands with Dr Sue and husband Colin at the helm and that is the best possible outcome for a bright future for the centre,” she said.

Students are showing up to school less and less, but there has not been one sole cause that has been identified as a reason behind regular attendance numbers dropping. The Ministry of Education’s New Zealand school attendance survey for term two in 2019 shows a drop to only 55.8 per cent of students regularly attending school. Regular attendance is defined by the Ministry of Education as students attending school for more than 90 per cent of available half-days. The survey is voluntary for schools to respond to and, of the 4379 total students recorded in the Ashburton District in 2019, only 2444 were attending school regularly. The localised data was released from the nationwide survey to Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon from associate education minister Tracey Martin. Martin’s response says there is no single or simple explanation for why student attendance rates have been declining. “Many different factors are coming together to produce these trends. Part of our response is to obtain better information to fully understand the drivers of nonattendance,” she said. Attendance declines as term two progresses (22 per cent of students were not present on the last

day of term two) and is lowest on Fridays and Mondays. Ashburton Intermediate School principal Brent Gray said they are facing a number of challenges when it comes to students attending school, but that the time of year can have an impact on the statistics as well. “It depends on what is happening in the year and it can put those numbers out,” he said. “In some times of the year you will have more parents pulling kids out for family holidays as that

time of year might suit, and you are always going to see reduced numbers in flu season.” Gray said it was important for them to work with parents to make sure that students were regularly attending school, and working with truancy services to ensure that any students regularly missing school for no reason were getting picked up. “Unfortunately it is often the case that if students are regularly missing school that is something that carries on right through their

schooling,” he said. Hampstead School principal Peter Melrose said they were seeing different challenges coming through with their students, but that he felt they had good systems in place to keep attendances up. Melrose said local truancy services and the Mana Aki workers in Mid Canterbury were very good at liaising with families. “Non-attendance is often symptomatic that there are other issues within the family,” he said. “We have seen an increase in kids being taken out of school to visit the islands or the North Island for tangis or memorial unveilings and family reasons which we didn’t really see previously. “We are pretty proactive, as I imagine most schools in Mid Canterbury are, and keep a weekly record of attendance and look for any patterns and send out texts and messages where we need to.” Melrose said it was important to keep a student’s attendance up as it impacted directly on their achievement. Ashburton College principal Ross Preece said there was one group of students that caused the most issues for the school in terms of attendance and that he expected their previous schools had experienced the same issues. “It is a weak system, if you go through the whole process to end up with a prosecution, the maximum fine is $150 for the parents

because it is their fault, not the kid’s, and often they don’t even have the means of paying it,” he said. “The other factor is the parents are without the skills or the knowledge to front up to the kids and say ‘you need to go to school’. “Little junior kicks up a scene and the parents just let them stay at home because they don’t want him or her to repeat that.” Falloon said any drop in school attendance was a concern and that the minister was absolutely right that unexplained absences from school have a strong correlation with a reduction in achievement. “Ensuring that young people stay engaged in education needs to be a core focus of Government, giving students greater options with things like trades training,” he said. “Not every kid will want to go to university and it’s important we cater right across the spectrum of skills we need. “Engineering and technology are huge growth areas and will be for decades to come, but if students don’t stay engaged in education they risk missing out on those opportunities.” Although nationwide regular attendance has declined across all demographics since 2015, the largest declines have been seen across year levels 1-8 and among Maori and Pacific students.

New era for Rakaia Medical Centre From P1 There was a real satisfaction in watching the practice move into the hands of someone who was passionate about medicine and about the Rakaia community, Webster said. “Prior to Sue’s arrival, we’d had three or four years of locums and this was a challenge, but now this is a thriving practice. Sue is the right person, this is the right fit for our community.” During her four years as Rakaia

GP, Fowlie had raised the practice’s reputation and patient numbers had grown significantly and now sat well over 2500, she said. With the sale of the practice, the trust would be wound up and funds invested with Advance Ashburton. Funds are likely to be made available in grants in the areas of health and wellbeing and that would benefit the people of Rakaia well into the future. The Rakaia Medical Trust was

established in 2004, taking over the running of the town’s medical centre after its resident doctor left and a buyer for the practice could not be found. In 2000 the practice moved into a new home, into a building leased from the Ashburton District Council. At that time it had 1100 patients on its books. The sale comes at the same time as the council-approved funding to extend the centre. Discussions on the expansion

have been under way for more than 18 months and the additions will double the size of the building to allow new services, more health professionals and the establishment of an on-site pharmacy. It has been a big week for the practice as it also received a special Cornerstone accreditation which recognises excellence and best practice in general practice. And that accreditation shows the quality of services the team pro-

vides, practice manager Emma Jaillet-Godin said. “We aim to give a safer and better experience for our patients and this demonstrates the ongoing improvement of the centre in delivering the best of care.” The medical centre celebrates its 20th birthday in June and is staffed by two permanent GPS and a regular locum, a newly graduated nurse practitioner, three nurses and an administration team.

Larger no-fly zones for Ashburton drones By Sue Newman

Finding legal airspace to fly your drone just got a whole lot harder for drone owners living around Ashburton. The exclusion flying zone around the Ashburton Airport has been enlarged and now runs in a four-kilometre radius around the field taking the no-fly area close to the Ashburton River

in the south, to Fairfield Road in the north and across the Ashburton Domain and Ashburton Golf Course in the west. The new zone was tabled at yesterday’s Ashburton Airport subcommittee meeting and raised a few questions from committee members. While he had no objections to the designated boundaries, councillor Rodger Letham, a real

estate agent, said that with the zone extending over part of west Ashburton and most of the east, it would be difficult for agents wanting drone images of properties they were selling to now obtain these. “The zone’s a bit further than it used to be and it will create some challenges, but it’s better to have better air safety than to have real estate photos,” he said.

Council commercial manager Colin Windleborn told the committee that while the exclusion zone did not cover all of the council’s greenfields, its own bylaws made it illegal to fly a drone over parks and reserves. It was also against the law to fly a drone over private properties, he said. CAA sets no-fly zones around controlled or special use air-

space. Airspace can also be temporarily designated “special use” to help a police, military, or search and rescue operation. Gull colony dissected

Aircraft emergency A light aircraft managed to touch down at a small airfield north of Christchurch despite reporting difficulties yesterday. The aircraft’s pilot had earlier reported they had gotten into difficulty about 1.40pm yesterday afternoon, a police spokeswoman said. The plane managed to make touchdown at Forest Field Aerodrome, about 20km north-west of Christchurch International Airport. No one was injured, the police spokeswoman said. However, it was not known if the plane landed without incident or had crash landed. A Civil Aviation Authority spokesman said he was aware of an accident at the airfield but did not yet have more – NZME details.

Forest and Bird Ashburton branch members have walked into the midst of the Ashburton River State Highway One black-billed gull colony in order to count nests. Adult and fledgling birds remaining at the site kept out of their way as the members braved a shallow river crossing and inspected the detritus of what remained from the summer breeding colony. Chairwoman Edith Smith was joined by fellow members Val Clemens, John Waugh and Andy Cox on Tuesday for the counting exercise. They marked nests they had counted with leaves, from branches they transported to the site, and were thankful it was not windy. It did however, start to rain while the exercise was underway, but the group carried on. Smith said members wanted to get the job out of the way prior to four-wheel-drivers and others returning to the river, as this would spread nesting material and make the nests harder to count.

Idea to reduce online sale fraud with a trade zone Low-level fraud has fallen significantly since the introduction of a safe trade zone by the Taupo District Council and police, but received a mixed response when canvassed amongst the Guardian’s Facebook followers. The trade zone provides a designated area for members of the public to exchange items they have organised to buy or exchange online. Detective John Goddard proposed the idea of a safe trade area after seeing several online frauds that could have been prevented if the parties involved had a safe meeting place. Similar initiatives have been used in the United States, where John was first introduced to the idea. He recognised its potential for Taupo and the zone was launched there late last year. “Police want people be safe and feel safe, and the safe trade zone

is a low-cost and low-risk solution to a big problem,” he said. “This has been very successful and we’ve seen a significant reduction in low level fraud as people use that safe trade area. “It’s popular with the community and I think it gives people confidence knowing that they are in a safe, designated area with plenty of security.” However, the idea got a mixed response on the Guardian’s Facebook page. “Rather this than giving address, but a lot of people waste your time and don’t show up for pick anyway so could be waiting there all day,” one commentator said. “I think it’s a great idea. A political twist for Fry-day Fry-up Ashburton is blessed with a wide range of fish and chip shops to satisfy one of New Zealand’s favourite fast food cravings. Guardian reporter Jaime Pitt-MacKay takes on the unenviable, or enviable task of ranking them all . . . I never expected this series to take a political twist, especially at the second stop, but when Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon parked himself in the seat next to me as I waited for my order from the Allenton Fish Supply, it seemed guaranteed. “Is this that fish and chip thing,” he quizzed. I tried to hush him, not wanting to give away what I was doing in the store for fear a few undeclared chips might be donated to a Friday Fry-up foundation account to win my favour over. The last thing this series needs is a Serious (Fried) Fraud Office investigation. It might just be because they are neighbours, but Falloon said the Allenton Fish Supply and Creek Road Fish and Chips would be the best I will find on my travels, but we will just have to wait and find out. Then, with a political seal of approval, I took what felt like a hefty package of fried goodness home ready for consumption. Unwrapping a perfectly folded package of fish and chips (no sticky tape here to keep it shut), the first thing that struck me was the sound of the chips. I could hear the crispiness and could also see it; areas where the chips thinned and were fried to rock-hard perfection. After plating the chips and fish, I grabbed the hot dog and was amazed at its lack of rigidity. I wouldn’t have said it was floppy, but definitely did not have the rigid structural integrity I’ve come to expect from a sausage dipped in batter and fried, especially one at what I think will turn out to be the more expensive end of the scale. Condiments on the plate, it’s time to get down to tasting. The chips are just as crispy as

The large portion of fish and chips from Allenton Fish Supply. they look and sound and, while they don’t feel overly greasy to taste, I found myself having to wipe my fingers a lot to get rid of the grease left behind, which is not necessarily a bad thing. The fish was a good thickness, with plenty of batter that proba-

bly wasn’t as crisp as I was after, but the fish itself was definitely better than last weeks, as you might expect from a place that has fish supply in its name. It also seemed to be a perfect handheld, fitting snugly in to my grasp like a favourite coffee cup.

The hot dog had that overly fake hot dog taste that I’m not overly keen on, but the rest of the meal held up. Allenton Fish Supply safely moves in to number one position in the Friday Fry-up power rankings.

A teenager appeared in court yesterday after police raided his house following an "abhorrent" threat was made against a Christchurch mosque where 42 people were killed on March 15 last year. Sam Richard Scott Brittenden, 19, appeared from custody at Christchurch District Court yesterday morning. He faced one charge that Wednesday, at a Redcliffs, Christchurch address, he failed without reasonable excuse to assist police exercising a search power under the Search and Surveillance Act 2012 Section 178. Duty lawyer Paul Johnson yesterday said further are charges likely. Johnson’s application for interim name suppression and suppression of the summary of facts was declined by Judge Tony Couch. Brittenden did not enter a plea and was remanded on bail to next appear in court on March 19. Judge Couch imposed bail conditions that he stays at a Merivale address, does not enter Hagley Park or Horncastle Arena, and not to possess or use firearms or restricted weapons. Christchurch police are on high-alert and have stepped up patrols around the city’s two main mosques in the lead-up to the anniversary of the March 15, 2019 attacks. Officers executed a search warrant at a Christchurch address in relation to a threat against Al Noor mosque on Wednesday morning. They found “a number of items at the address, including a vehicle”.

“Police are aware that a number of people have been sharing an image featuring Al Noor mosque, originally published on social media,” Canterbury District commander superintendent John Price said. “The further sharing of this image is causing significant distress and anxiety for members of our community. This type of imagery has no place in Aotearoa New

Zealand. It is abhorrent and will not be tolerated.” The image has been referred to the chief censor to consider whether it should be classified as objectionable material. If the image is classified as objectionable, anyone who knowingly possesses or shares the image commits a criminal offence and can receive a maximum of 14 years imprisonment.

“The safety of the community is our utmost priority,” Price said. “Police continue to work alongside Al Noor mosque, Linwood mosque, and other members of our community impacted by the terrible events of 15 March 2019.” Police have increased patrols around Al Noor and Linwood mosques and will be “maintaining a visible presence in the com-

munity as we approach the anniversary” of the terror attacks, Price said. He thanked members of the community who alerted police to the recent threat against Al Noor mosque. Price added: “We ask that you continue to remain vigilant, and encourage you to report anything suspicious or concerning to police immediately.”

Third coronavirus case contracted within New Zealand By Jason Walls NZME

New Zealand’s third coronavirus case is a man in Auckland in his 40s, Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield confirmed yesterday afternoon. He has close family members who have returned to New Zealand after spending time in Iran recently. Two schools, Auckland Grammar and Ormiston Junior College, have been notified as there is a family member at each of those schools. These students are now at home in isolation. They have no symptoms. There is no risk to students or staff in either of the schools. There has been more than 95,000 cases of the virus reported in the world – more than 51,000 have recovered. Just over 3200 people have died. The travelling family member believed to have passed the virus to the Auckland man was a “probable” case but was no longer showing any symptoms, Bloomfield said.

It was “very likely” this person did, in fact, have coronavirus before recovering, but the ministry will not be retesting them. In terms of the numbers at this stage, there are three people confirmed with coronavirus, with a fourth probable case. The third case was reported to the ministry at 6pm last night. He said the chance of widespread community outbreak remains low. Bloomfield said the man does not require hospital level care, and is in self-isolation. The man’s family remains in self-isolation too. The man’s partner, who has been unwell, is also being tested. The man himself had not travelled to Iran – but his family did. Other people who have been in contact with the man have been asked to self-isolate. Seven people are under investigation for the virus. The ministry can do 550 tests a day, but that will be upped to almost 1000 within the coming weeks. Bloomfield said the ministry

would not be disclosing which medical centre the man went to. The family member, who travelled back from Iran, presumably had coronavirus – but they recovered, Bloomfield said. However, they did pass it on to the man in his 40s. The family member who was in Iran does not have coronavirus. Fed up with rate rises, try 12.6% for size A

s sure as the sun rises and sets each day, our rates bill gets bigger each year and, no matter how modest that rise, there are always mumblings, mutterings and occasionally, roars of discontent. For the next financial year our district’s rates look likely to rise by an average of less than 5 per cent. Nothing’s signed and sealed, but that’s what the figures in the Ashburton District Council’s draft budget say. Wait, don’t fire bricks at our councillors, take a pause and look around the country. Compared to many towns and cities, we’re getting off pretty lightly. Tauranga might be one of New

Zealand’s fastest growing cities. Its property prices are going through the roof with its coastline of bays, inlets, cliffs and long, sandy beaches making inland urban sprawl inevitable. This beautiful city might be growing, it might offer an outstanding lifestyle, but it also offers a rate rise for next year that is not just high, at an average of 12.6 per cent, it’s outrageous. So how does that happen? How

does any town or city need to recoup that much more from its property owners in one year to cover whatever needs to be built, fixed or redeveloped? Rates rises like this happen because the council of the day is forced to mop up from the lack of foresight and planning shown by councils of the past. Rates might have been low for decades, but that probably means not much was done in the way of facilities built or infrastructure developed. That our rates rarely rise by much more than 5 per cent can be credited to councils and councillors of the past. Ours have never shirked from making tough decisions. They’ve sunk money

into repairing and replacing the underground stuff and they’ve never been afraid to tackle big ticket projects if they will benefit residents. They’ve kept looking ahead. We should be celebrating our modest rate rises, we should be feeling a little smug and we should be saying a quiet thank you to the people of the past who planned for our future. Sure, they don’t always get it right, but most often things go wrong when they decide to take shortcuts or cheap options – take a look at the endless issues with our art gallery and museum building. The money not invested at the outset is being spent many

times over in finding fixes today. That’s one blooper in a line of success stories. As ratepayers, we need to be like council teams of the past, we need to look ahead. Council staff are doing that with our big ticket projects, adopting the inter-generational borrowing model – we get the facilities today to use and enjoy but the users and enjoyers in the future will also be paying their share. So, next time you look at your rates bill and grimace, give thanks that you live in a place where rates are low, rate rises are modest and where the next generation of users helps pay for the facilities we enjoy today.

Today’s highlight in history: On March 6, 1944, US heavy bombers staged the first full-scale American raid on Berlin during World War Two. On this date: In 1475, Italian artist and poet Michelangelo was born in Caprese in the Republic of Florence. In 1830, The so-called ‘Girls‘ War’ was fought between northern and southern Ngāpuhi at Kororāreka (now Russell). Up to 100 Māori were killed or wounded in the fighting, after which the northern alliance took control of the important settlement. In 1834, the city of York in Upper Canada was incorporated as Toronto. Meditation v energy drinks I

had a fascinating chat with author Kerene Strochnetter this week. She has just released the book Crazy Busy. She is also the managing director of Mindful at Work, a business hell-bent on bringing mindfulness to the workplace. Her book is aimed at very busy people and I’m sure that most adults with a job, and especially those with kids as well, fall into that category. The book’s goal is to reduce stress, unleash potential and access the better version of you. One thing she stressed in our chat, without giving to much of the book away, was the need to meditate. Take some time out of the busy to recharge and refocus. Just about all the books I have read on successful people mention their ability to take time out, switch off and meditate. I’ve given it a crack in the past and I’m sure 90 per cent of the time I fell asleep. I’m going to learn how to do it properly (read her book before I give it away) because I’m convinced it’s an essential tool for well being. I see a lot of very busy people in this town and I can’t help worrying that most are busy AND STRESSED.

I am convinced that stress is a fast track to sickness. What really stuck with me from our chat was when she said a busy, cluttered mind will often wander and no, it doesn’t go to a happy place, but a rested and refocused mind will stay on track. Therefore getting the task done quicker. Seems crazy though eh, taking time out rather than getting stuck in. I’m sure plenty reading this will be thinking what a load of bollocks. Grab a Red Bull and just get on with it man! That scares me though. Because next thing you know you end up like the poor lady in California whose husband drank at least one energy drink every day to help him get through his busy night shift job. She woke to find him gasping for air, turning blue and then grey. He was rushed to hospi-

tal where he was put on life support and into a medically induced coma. Weeks later he was pronounced brain dead and the poor lady made the heartbreaking decision to turn off his life support. She said her husband was a healthy man who did not smoke or drink. She added that he had a full physical examination the month prior, but all his results came back fine. Doctors told her his sugar levels were sky high and believed he may have had a diabetic episode. “The doctor told me that drinking energy drinks is like playing Russian roulette with your life, and that really stuck with me,” she said. I have never been a fan of energy drinks. Yes, I have tried them. Yes, I enjoyed the rush of energy. But you can keep the crash on the other side of the rush and the headaches that go with that. I’ll stick with my morning coffees and give this meditation thing another nudge so, if

Zoono shares skyrocketing The share price of Kiwi hand sanitiser company Zoono has soared more than 200 per cent following the coronavirus outbreak spreading throughout the world. Zoono says the virus, which first broke out in Wuhan, China, has seen a steep spike in sales of its sanitiser product in the last week. The company released an announcement to the Australian Stock Exchange confirming its product had been tested and proven to protect against Covid-19. E-commerce sales of the $6 sanitiser had increased to $100,000 a day, up from about $20,000 per month, it said. Zoono’s sanitiser is made in Auckland and the company has a distribution agreement with Eagle Health Holdings Limited, which has ramped up its export volumes into its pharmaceutical facility in Xiamen, China, where the company is labelling the product and sending it out to more than 30,000 stores in that country. The biotech company’s sanitiser is said to use a process called lysis, which forms a protective barrier that kills pathogens on contact. It was tested against bovine coronavirus in 2012, but had been retested to against the latest Covid-19 strain, the ASX announcement said. On the same day of the announcement, its shares shot up by 17 per cent, and a further 19 per cent the following day.

Over the past month the company’s share price has increased by 250 per cent and last traded at $2.25. Sales of Zoono’s product have soared this year. The company now has a tab on its online store called “Outbreak prevention”, which takes the user through to its range of hand sanitisers, body wipes and a sanitiser surface spray. In February, the company said its online sales were averaging between $30,000 and $50,000 per day and its cash resources had increased by more than 20 per cent to $4 million since the beginning of the year. Zoono is now planning to move to a new warehouse and office facility, and is in the process of hiring more staff, to meet demand for its product. Zoono is a tightly held stock, with Auckland-based Paul Hyslop controlling 51 per cent of the shares. Hyslop has been involved in a number of businesses in New Zealand. In 2000 he gained notoriety as “EF” in a Securities Commission (now FMA) case after he made $40,000 trading on insider information on Fletcher Challenge. The Securities Commission ruled Hyslop, whom it dubbed EF, could not be prosecuted because he received the information third or fourth hand. Separately, Hyslop was one of three of Wilson Neill directors fined a total $30,000 for Companies Act breaches in 2000.

McBride tipped for top job

The money is on Fonterra’s next chairman to be former Zespri chairman Peter McBride as shareholders demand a leader with international market experience and a good commercial record to guide the big dairy co-operative out of a morale funk. Fonterra farmer-owners approached by the Herald after the announcement that chairman John Monaghan would step down in November said the news was no surprise, and the next appointee must inspire confidence among shareholders, staff and New Zealand Inc. The company signalled in September last year, around the time it announced a FY2019 net loss of $605 million on asset writedowns of $826m, that a succession plan for the top job was being worked on, though this did not mean Monaghan was going to retire. Shareholders, who declined to be named, said McBride, though relatively new to the board of New Zealand’s biggest company, was the clear successor. He was elected to the board as a farmer-director in 2018 and has been eyed by shareholders and Fonterra unit-holders since as a potential chairman given the success of kiwifruit marketer Zespri. Dairy industry leadership veteran, Fonterra shareholder and kiwifruit grower David Jensen said it was the right time for Monaghan to go. “There’s been a lot of change and John was part of some of the past. “It is important that we are putting some of the challenges of the past behind us with a new outlook and a new chairperson. “There is a real requirement to rebuild confidence in the shareholder

Peter McBride is in line to be the Fonterra boss. base – shareholders and unit holders –and in the Government which clearly struggled with Fonterra in its first 12 months in office. “And equally for the public who look to Fonterra to provide leadership around all sorts of areas ....” Jensen declined to say who should succeed Monaghan. “That’s a decision the board needs to make and it needs to be a good one.” Other shareholders said McBride’s short time on the Fonterra board was irrelevant. “To chair an organisation of this size and never to have chaired anything is a hell of an ask,” said one. “It is a large complex business and requires stakeholder management. “McBride has experience on the international stuff and Zespri is in a very similar space to Fonterra. “He and Lain [Jager, the former Zespri chief executive] did a great job on the Psa recovery and he also has a commercial record

which is very important.” Monaghan and his predecessor, the late John Wilson, had not chaired a company of size before taking on the job. Former Fonterra farmer-director Blue Read said he respected Monaghan for his work and for leading reform in the company. Monaghan has been a farmer-director for 11 years. He became chairman in 2018 when Wilson stepped down for health reasons. Wilson died last year aged 54. “Hopefully his [Monaghan’s] legacy will be drawing Fonterra back from the brink. “John came in and with the board and management identified what the challenges were and got on with it. They started making some hard but not necessarily popular decisions.” Under Fonterra constitution, the new chairperson must be appointed from among its seven farmer-elected directors. Independent directors can’t be the chairperson.

or those of us who appreciate such important things, the Holden verses Ford rivalry over many generations has been epic! Particularly so the Bathurst and Aussie Super Car Championship battles. Not just for the fans either, but in terms of marketing for both makes on both sides of the Tasman. So for many (including yours truly), General Motors’ recent unexpected announcement that it will soon not only stop making right-hand drive vehicles, but that the Holden name will eventually vanish into history, feels a bit like the thought of losing an old friend. But of course the other car companies, while perhaps appearing sympathetic and shedding a few crocodile tears, will undoubtedly be carefully planning how to grab the opportunity of filling the rather large gap in the new vehicle market that will arise as Holden withdraws. Accordingly, I was very happy for what may well be my last chance/final Holden hurrah with the opportunity to appreciate having some further 500ks of drive time in an Acadia LTZ-V. For this easily-liked, built in Tennessee, full-sized seven-seater with its hunkered down, firmly attached to the road looks continues not only as the Holden flagship but is also their most technically advanced model ever! The range of which Holden says – “You don’t just turn up in an Acadia – you Arrive”! starts at $49,990 for the front drive LT, while this comprehensively equipped LTZ-V costs $71,990 (plus ORCs).

All have 3.6 litre petrol V6s, which produce 231kW and a very useable 367Nm of torque. This in connection with the pro-active, smart changing nine-speed auto adds up to enthusiastic performance. That performance comes complete with a neat growly sound, especially when provoked, as it accelerates away from standstill to 100kmh in just over seven seconds. But, it then can also be suitably frugal, for close to the claimed 9.3L/100km was noted for a return trip to North Canterbury. The engine, which operates very quietly at just1500rpm at 100km/h cruise, also has the ability to deactivate two cylinders. There’s also the stop/go helping out. There’s selectable (on the fly, via a rotary dial) modes for different driving conditions, including those for constant all-wheel-drive (with adjustable torque split front/rear) then also performance or towing. Irrespective of how many are aboard the ride remains plush but still suitably firm, thanks to the considerable ANZAC input with both the handling and ride. As well there are obvious benefits from

the LTZ-V’s adjustable, adaptive suspension. This changes with the selected drive mode, then in whichever means precise, predictable handling and cornering. While there’s 203mm of ground clearance, the Acadia still has a suitably low centre of gravity. Even with the black leather upholstery the wide, spacious cabin has a light and airy feel about it. An easy exercise also to get seven people aboard and comfortably set up to enjoy the comfort, space and many conveniences on board. The second row slides back and forth, and those sitting therein have separate climate-air controls, USB ports etc. The two third-row seats are also large and comfortable, with plenty of space allround for my 179cm build. There’s lots of adjustment for the driver, while the dials and controls, including those for the impressive line-up of technology aboard including an excellent infotainment system with Bose sound and adaptive cruise, the 360-degree camera (very handy for both parking and lining up towable stuff) etc are where and how you expect them to be. As well there’s speed sign memory, AEB, cyclist detection, blind spot active steering, park assist, rear cross traffic alerts and more. No head-up display though. With all seats occupied there’s still reasonable luggage space to be loaded via the powered, height adjustable tail-gate. Fold the third row and there’s a great 1042 litres available.

Wide draw only setback

Sherrif ready for big run

Everything points to Chariots Of Fire Lochinvar Art running a mighty race in tomorrow night’s $1 million Miracle Mile, except the wide barrier. In the four years since the Chariots Of Fire was run before the Miracle Mile and became a “feeder” race for it, every Chariots winner has finished top three. It started with the All Stars’ Have Faith In Me who won the big double 2016. Then followed Lazarus (third to Lennytheshark in 2017); Jilliby Kung Fu (second to My Field Marshal in 2018) and Poster Boy (third to Spankem last year). Trainer-driver David Moran insists he’s got Lochinvar Art “as good as ever”, but, like everyone, he’s worried about the wide draw (he’ll start from gate seven).

“I’ve got a few days for it to sink in … it certainly doesn’t look any better than it did when they drew it (last) Saturday night,” Moran said. “I’ve tossed a lot of options around in my head, but I don’t think I can go forward early. “I can’t see gaps appearing when you’ve got so many quick beginners like King Of Swing, Alta Orlando, Majordan and others. “I’m pretty much resigned to settling back in the last couple and then you’re in the hands of others … I’ll need them to go really hard up front to have any chance of getting into it. “He’s versatile, but there’s only so much you can do from a draw like that in a sprint race.” Moran said Lochinvar Art has

thrived through his first few months in the big league, which included a Hunter Cup run. “He’s loving it. “He’s one of those horses who loves the hard racing and gets better for it,” he said. “He’s as good as I can have him going into this week and he’ll need to be from the draw.” Lochinvar Art has been the biggest drifter on the Aussie TAB since markets re-opened after the barrier draw. He’s out from $3.80 to $5. AG’s White Socks (gate one) has also eased from $5 to $6 and even the favourite, King Of Swing (four) is out from $2.80 to $3.10. Alta Orlando ($21 into $9.50), Code Bailey ($6.50 into $5.50) and even Majordan ($14 to $11) have been the firmers.

Tough task for Tiptronic in Bonecrusher Graham Richardson experienced one of his biggest moments in racing when Tiptronic won the group one Herbie Dyke Stakes (2000m) at Te Rapa last month and the Matamata trainer is hoping for a repeat performance at Ellerslie on Saturday. “It was awesome, it was a welldeserved win by him, especially since he ran second in the race the year before,” Richardson said. The 6-year-old gelding will tackle the same distance on Saturday when he contests the group one Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes. “He’s very well and I am pleased he has got a good draw (4),” Richardson said. “I think 2000m is his pet distance and he is strong enough now, this is his season.” However, Richardson is cautious about his opposition which includes group one winners Avantage, True Enough, and On The Rocks. “It’s a strong field, any one of them can win it, but he has got the best strike-rate in the race,” Richardson said. Tiptronic is likely to head for a freshen-up after Saturday, with a trip across the Tasman on the cards for the son of O’Reilly. “I have got to discuss it with the owners, but he will definitely go out for a holiday after this run because he has had a hard season,

Richardson will be vying for more group one spoils at Ellerslie when Paisley Park contests the Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Cup (3200m). “It is an unusual race in the sense that the race is set-weight and penalties. He should be bot-

tom of the weights, but he is not.” Richardson said he was happy enough with the son of Azamour after his last start fifth-placing in the group two Avondale Cup (2400m). “It was an extremely good run in the Avondale Cup. He got flattened by the second horse (Platinum Invador) 150m out.

“He was back in the field, he was supposed to be trailing because he is pretty one paced, and he only got beaten by a length. A“That horse from Australia (Etah James) with 53.5kg on its back, and a few others, will be hard to beat. “But two miles will sort a lot them out.”

Group Three winner Sherrif will be looking to add another victory to his tally at Trentham tomorrow when he contests the Anuka Smoker Handicap (1600m). The son of High Chaparral pleased his connections when winning fresh-up over 1400m at New Plymouth last month and Robert Wellwood, who trains in partnership with Roger James, said the gelding favours his races spaced. “It was a nice win and you would hope he is going at least as well he was fresh-up. “He is well, he has trained on nicely. “It has suited him to have a month between runs coming back from a long spell.” Sherrif will tackle a small but select field tomorrow, with his competition including stakes winners Toms and Wait A Sec. “It is a nice enough race and he doesn’t get in at quite his true handicap, but we are happy with the horse and he does have a lot of ability,” Wellwood said. “We will see how he goes, if he won impressively on the weekend it opens up a few options, whether that be domestic or over the ditch. “We will just take it step-by-step. “He has got to win and do it nicely to start thinking like that.” Further north, Wellwood and James will be on course at Ellerslie where they will be hoping Group One performer Rondinella can break through for her first victory at elite level in the Gr.1 Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes (2000m). The daughter of Ocean Park finished third behind Melody Belle and Danzdanzdance in the race last year on a Heavy10 surface before she went on to place in the Gr.1 Tancred Stakes (2400m) and finish fourth in the Gr.1 Sydney Cup (3200m). Rondinella heads into the race off the back of a disappointing unplaced run in the Gr.1 Haunui Farm WFA Group One Classic (1600m) at Otaki last month. “It was a bit of a headscratcher last time, she didn’t go well at all. “ It is going to suit her getting back to Ellerslie, a track she has performed well at before. “We have just go to put that last run behind us and forget about it.” Rondinella has drawn well in barrier three tomorrow and Wellwood said the 2000m distance will be ideal.

Banquo chases Newmarket win for Kiwi owners Stallion credentials go on the line for Kiwi-owned colt Banquo in Saturday’s Gr.1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington. Local pair up for award

Two of the region’s top young talents are in the running for further accolades. Triathlete Brea Roderick and basketballer Ashlee Strawbridge are among the names in the running for Outstanding Young Sportswoman of the Year at the upcoming Canterbury Sports Awards. Roderick was part of the New Zealand junior team which competed at last year’s ITU Triathlon World Championships in Switzerland where the Methven teen finished 10th. It was the second time she had been selected for the TriNZ junior elite team. Eighteen-year-old Strawbridge, of Ashburton, was part of the New Zealand under-18 women’s 3×3 basketball outfit which won the silver medal at the FIBA Under 18 3×3 World Cup in Mongolia in 2019. Sport Canterbury revealed the awards finalists yesterday at Nga Puna Wai Sports Hub in Christchurch, Other finalists in the Young Sportswoman category include rugby player Amy Rule, rower Phoebe Trolove and cyclist Sami Donnelly. Sport Canterbury chief executive, Julyan Falloon said the finalists on the list demonstrated the diversity of sporting excellence that Canterbury isn’t always known for. “It’s easy to associate red and black and our regional pride with three or four sporting codes.” The ceremony is to be held at Christchurch’s Air Force Museum on Brea Roderick competes during last year’s ITU Triathlon World Championships in Lausanne, April 3. Increasing calls for removal of coin-toss By Clay Wilson

dvocates for scrapping the toss in test cricket will be smiling as they look back on the Black Caps’ last two series. Outplayed and overwhelmed in Australia, the New Zealand side produced an emphatic response against India. Based purely on recent results, neither outcome could have been predicted. Black Caps fans were full of optimism when their team headed across the Tasman in December. Unbeaten in seven series and the No. 2 test side in the world, the Kiwi side were expected to be competitive, maybe better. The same went for India, who arrived on New Zealand shores with an even more imposing recent resume. Fifteen wins from their previous 17 series, going back almost five years, and unsurprisingly, test cricket’s top-ranked team. What followed, in both instances, were series sweeps for the home side. Less familiar with the ball whizzing past their whiskers and clattering high into the keeper’s gloves, the Black Caps struggled with the constant diet of pace

and bounce dished up for them in Australia. Far from farcical but certainly conditions that suited four Australian fast bowlers capable of speed consistently in excess of 140km/h. Returning to Kiwi shores for their next test series, New Zealand’s seamers were given a similar platform to success. The green, green grass of home was once again a happy place as the Black Caps bowlers teased, tempted and, at times, tormented the Indian batsmen with swing and seam. Neither series result should significantly diminish the standing of the New Zealand or Indian teams in test cricket. Both remain very good redball outfits. But the last step to greatness is always the longest, and credible and consistent away wins at test match level are without doubt cricket’s Everest. Some believe metres have been added to the mountain in recent times, with home advantage going beyond acceptable levels thanks to increasingly favourable pitches. In 2018, South African skipper Faf du Plessis and former Australian captains Ricky Ponting and Steve Waugh were among

those to support the removal of the coin toss. The calls were ultimately unanswered by the sport’s rule makers but are returning with the addition of the Test Championship, where every match counts for more. In theory, an even balance between bat and ball is desirable. The more balanced, the more

reflective the outcome should be of the respective teams. Different conditions around the world, though, are part of cricket’s fabric. Eliminate that element too much and it will be without perhaps its most unique feature. Doing away with the toss definitely comes with its merits. But maybe the answer to the issue lies in other areas. Give teams a better chance to prepare for the challenge of foreign conditions. Make warm-up matches and the provision of good practice mandatory, and give teams more time to arrive and adjust. They are stipulations the Black Caps can probably relate to, given the first test of their 3-0 thrashing in Australia came just 11 days after the completion of a home series against England. But it’s a situation without a silver bullet. For now, the New Zealand side will simply be happy their impressive efforts in two matches against India have allowed them to quickly turn their test fortunes around. Ahead of another trip across the ditch for the Chappell-Hadlee one-day series, it’s exactly the confidence boost the Black Caps needed.

Ferguson keen for another shot at Aussies You are welcome, New Zealand. Black Caps fast bowler Lockie Ferguson is back from injury and the country has the Otago batting line-up to thank for it. He returns to the New Zealand one-day side for the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy following a long lay-off. The fast bowler picked up a calf injury during his test debut in the first test against Australia in Perth in December. His return has been carefully managed – well, not that carefully from Otago’s point of view. Ferguson has played two one-dayers and two four-day games in preparation for his international return. Three of the matches were against Otago. He took two for 50 in an impressive effort in the one-day final against the Volts. He bowled with pace and aggression during the Aces’ two-wicket win. He also struck in-form Otago opener Hamish Rutherford on the helmet. Rutherford was forced to retire when he failed a concussion assessment and his departure robbed the Otago innings of some valuable momentum. While no-one likes to see a player get struck that way, Ferguson brings a point of difference from the other seamers in the Black Caps attack. He was the standout bowler for New Zealand at the World Cup last year, and his return will be warmly welcomed by fans who will be hoping the three-game one-day series against Australia will be more successful than the recent test series against the same opponent which was lost 3-0. Ferguson appreciated the extra time he was afforded. ‘‘Coming back from a pretty tough injury, and quite a long one considering that I’ve been pretty good for the last few years, I needed to take the time to make sure it was right and fortunately played quite a lot of cricket so I have that confidence back in my body,’’ he said. ‘‘Having the time in the legs means I can trust it and feel confident with the rhythm I’ve built up.’’ Ferguson’s test debut certainly did not go as well as he hoped. There was the injury, of course, but his 11 overs proved quite costly as well. ‘‘My debut wasn’t great ... so hopefully I can rectify that and get through a first full game.’’ Ferguson will team up with Trent Boult and probably Matt Henry. The trio started in the infamous tied World Cup final and arguably have first dibs in Australia. New Zealand has not beaten Australia in a one-day series in Australia. The series starts at the Sydney Cricket Ground a week tomorrow.

Gregorius goes out a winner

City scrapes in; Spurs eliminated

The Football Ferns have beaten Belgium in a penalty shootout to advance to the semi-finals of the Algarve Cup in Portugal. New Zealand led 1-nil for much of the match after Olivia Chance scored late in the first half with Belgium scoring the equaliser with only minutes remaining. The Football Ferns were reduced to ten players midway through the second half after defender Claudia Bunge was sent off after receiving a second yellow card. New Zealand won the shootout 7-6 and will now play either Portugal or Italy in the semi-finals. Sarah Gregorius made her 100th international appearance when she came on as a second half replacement and she promptly announced her retirement from top level play after the match. The Belgians are ranked six places higher than New Zealand on the world rankings with Belgium at 17 and the Football Ferns 23rd. “It certainly was nerve-wracking but it was a terrific performance by the players,” coach Tom Sermanni said. “In large parts of the first half particularly, I thought we played some of the best football we’ve played in a long time. “The players then showed a huge amount of character and determination,” “The fact that we kept our discipline, our organisation and our concentration really said a lot about the determination of the team to get a result. “It was a great result and a really good performance.” Sermani was pleased Gregorius got to end her career on a high.

Sarah Gregorius has played her last game for the Ferns, notching up her 100th match yesterday. “To end her last game by scoring a goal with her last kick – it doesn’t get any better than that,” Sermanni said.

“It was a great send off for her and a perfect way to finish her career.” The Football Ferns will have

a couple of days rest, then take on either Portugal or Italy in the semi-finals to be played on Sunday morning.

Coll falls short at final hurdle Close, but not close enough for Kiwi squash pro, Paul Coll in the final of the Windy City Open platinum tournament in Chicago yesterday. The 27-year-old from Greymouth put in a fighting performance against world No.2 Ali Farag, but in the end was defeated in five games by the Egyptian 14-12, 11-9, 11-7, 11-6, 11-1 in 76 minutes. Coll, ranked fifth in the world, had tried hard to break the hold of the Egyptians who dominate world squash, but on this occasion it appeared his legs failed him against an onslaught on top shots from Farag. The New Zealander started well by staging mini comebacks to win the first two games. However once Farag got on a roll in the third he upped his tempo and played squash which has seen him ranked as the top player over the past couple of years.

Earlier Coll had beaten the world No.1 Mohamed El Shorbagy and No.4 Karim Gawad to reach the final, but on this occasion Farag who had won the last 11 times the pair had played was too effective. “I felt flat coming into in the match.

“Even in the first two I was pretty lucky in the end. “After that I ran out of gas. “He’s (Farag) a very tough player. I’m very happy for him to win this event, if I can’t win it,” said Coll who will next play at the Grasshopper Cup in Zurich, Switzerland, March 17-22.

Domestically the efforts of Coll will no doubt be inspiration at the Auckland Open at the North Shore Club this weekend. The Auckland Open is a men’s PSA Challenger tournament and women’s PSA Satellite has players from a variety of nations with world rankings.

Manchester City stayed on course to retain the FA Cup with a 1-0 win over second-tier Sheffield Wednesday to reach the quarter-finals, while Tottenham was knocked out on penalties by Norwich yesterday. City could have turned the win into a rout if not for Wednesday goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith, who made some excellent reaction saves but also a costly error to let Sergio Aguero score the opening goal in the 53rd minute. The Argentine forward’s low shot bounced off Wildsmith’s palm and looped up before dipping in under the crossbar. It was Wildsmith’s first game of the season, but he stopped other good shots from the likes of Aguero and Bernardo Silva, while Nicolas Otamendi hit the crossbar. It was City’s fifth straight win, with the last four coming in four different competitions, including the League Cup final victory over Aston Villa on Sunday. City was drawn away at Newcastle for the quarter-finals. Wednesday had just 20 per cent possession and didn’t record a single shot on target. Kevin de Bruyne was left out of City’s squad, with manager Pep Guardiola suggesting he had a problem with his shoulder. “I don’t know,” Guardiola said when asked if De Bruyne could play against rival Manchester United on Sunday in the Premier League. Tottenham was eliminated 3-2 on penalties by a tenacious Norwich team after the game finished 1-1 following extra time. Norwich was 1-0 down in both the game and the shootout but bounced back to win after Tottenham’s Erik Lamela hit the bar and goalkeeper Tim Krul saved efforts from Troy Parrott and Gedson Fernandes. Tottenham opened the scoring thanks to a 13th-minute goal from defender Jan Vertonghen, who soared above a pack of players to head in Giovani Lo Celso’s free kick at the far post. Norwich sent the game to extra time when Josip Drmic bundled in a rebound. After an uneventful extra halfhour, it was the first penalty shootout at Tottenham’s new stadium and a battle between two Dutch goalkeepers – Tottenham’s Michel Vorm and Norwich’s Tim Krul. It was Krul who came out on top with two saves and some calculated gamesmanship, moving around on his line and taking long drinks to make Tottenham players wait. Norwich dropped behind when Vorm saved Kenny McLean’s first penalty, but Lamela hit the crossbar. At 2-2, Krul gave Norwich the edge with the save from Parrott, the 18-year-old forward who had come no as a substitute. Todd Cantwell scored next for Norwich off the bar. That left Fernandes needing to score to keep Tottenham in the game, but Krul got down low to stop his poorly struck spot kick.

Debut ‘real special’

Dallas McLeod believes he has a clear understanding of his role as he takes to the field for his Super Rugby debut tonight. The Methven outside back has been named to start at second five for the Crusaders week six matchup with the Reds at Orangetheory Stadium. The 20-year-old will line up between All Blacks Richie Mo’unga and Jack Goodhue, the latter making his 50th appearance for the red and blacks. Following this week’s team

naming, McLeod told media he was excited to finally get an opportunity. “Been looking forward to it for a long time. “To finally get my name called out in the team announcement on Monday was real special.” McLeod played mostly on the wing during Canterbury’s Mitre 10 Cup campaign last year, however is no stranger to the midfield. “They’ve told me to keep doing what I normally do. “We’ve had a good look at the Reds and know where to attack. “I’ve been real clear on my role

and that’s helped me a lot and what I need to be doing.” However he admitted there would be some nerves given the milestone.
