Life is all about getting the most out of every day, says Hospice Mid Canterbury volunteer Jocelyn Thomson. The Ashburton grandmother is among men and women at the organisation who provide a sitting service for clients. In many respects the word sitting is a misnomer, as the task quite often involves getting out and about. It can be anything from walking a client’s dog and listening to music, or going on a trip to the shops or movies. “I have always had a passion for making people’s lives interesting,” Thomson said. “It’s all about getting the most out of the years you have got left.” The 67-year-old lives by the philosophy herself, somehow finding time for Hospice and other volunteer roles including at SEEDS and on Friends of Trott’s Gardens, while working fulltime. Being a service worker in a residential house at Idea Services, where she has worked for more than 18 years, helped free up her

daytimes for contributing to such organisations, she said. She was particularly inspired by a late dear friend of hers. The woman had her car packed and all ready to go on holiday when she became too ill to leave and then passed away. “I believe that’s the way people’s lives should be, they should be living to the fullest to the very last breath,” Thomson said. Hospice Mid Canterbury volunteer services manager Christine Wilson said just as important as outings and entertainment, was the companionship that sitters could bring to clients. “A volunteer can bring the outside world to a client no longer able to leave the house,” Wilson said. The organisation was always looking for more volunteers, and she wanted more men in particular as sitters, as male clients liked to share mutual interests. Ashburton’s top cop is set to call time on not only his work in the Ashburton district, but as a police officer as well. Sub-area commander Phil Dean is retiring from the Police, and Ashburton will be his final station in a career that has spanned 25 and a half years across the country. Dean has held the top role in the district for 10 months, but decided in September to start considering other career paths. “It dawned on me that all the decisions in my life I was making with a policeman’s head on my shoulders,” he said. “I don’t know what my next step is going to be, but I have had the most amazing career.” Police are currently in the process of appointing a short term replacement for Dean who finishes on December 21, and have begun advertising nationally the permanent role. Despite his permanent role only lasting 10 months, Dean believes the next person to take the reins will likely look to stay for longer. “I believe someone will come in and set themselves and that will be good for the community and the Police,” he said. Increased visibility for not just himself, but his officers was a big part of Dean’s plans when he first came to the district, and he hopes that will be continued. “I went to Ashburton with the commitment to being visible, increasing community consultation and I think I have done that,” he said. “We have seen a positive ef-

cially around road safety,” he said. “Ashburton has some of the best officers I have worked with in terms of being capable, committed and courageous.”

Charity shop served notice to stop operations Tinwald woman Cheryl Mockford has been issued an abatement notice to stop operating a “free shop” out of her garage. Mockford received the abatement notice from the Ashburton District Council yesterday, saying she had until the end of January next year to stop the activity. Mockford has run a giveaway shop from her Tinwald home for several months, collecting other people’s unwanted household goods and then giving them away or holding the odd garage sale. Council staff visited the property in October and decided the giveaway and garage sale operation was best described as a community activity, not able to be conducted in a residential zone without resource consent. If Mockford does not comply with the abatement notice, she may be prosecuted. She has 15 days to appeal the notice. Mockford said she was angry and now desperate to find an alternative venue for the free shop. She is hoping a benevolent local building owner might come to her help and she can relocate the shop. She said the number of visitors had increased in the lead-up to Christmas and people were looking for all sorts of household goods, including linen and baby clothes. She had also been travelling as far as Temuka to pick up goods that could be redistributed to those in need. “I don’t want to stop the shop and the community don’t want it stopped.”

New fitness craze comes to town By Erin TaskEr

A fitness craze that has already swept its way around the world is on its way to Ashburton, and a familiar local sporting figure is one of the people behind it. Former Black Sticks women’s hockey player Stacey McKerchar (nee Carr) and her husband Charlie are set to open F45 Ashburton in the centre of the town in the New Year and they can’t wait to start helping people transform their lives. F45 started in Australia a few years ago now, with the ‘F’ standing for functional training and the 45 relating to the length of a workout – 45 minutes – and it’s now worldwide, with studios around New Zealand. In four years more than 1000 franchises have been sold across 36 countries. A circuit-based workout where the number of stations depend on the workout, F45 isn’t a gym you can just turn up to at any given time. It’s all class based and although Ashburton’s timetable is yet to be finalised, Stacey said there could be up to seven or eight classes a day. Fitness has always been a huge part of Stacey’s life. It’s something she’s passionate about, and during her playing career she completed a Bachelor of Sport and Exercise, majoring in management, through Massey University. She debuted for the Black Sticks at just 18 years of age and went on to play 127 games for the national side before officially retiring from national duties after the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games where the Black Sticks won silver. Since then she’s returned to her roots in Ashburton, married and has three children – Jack, 4, Sam, 2, and Ben, nine months – and is currently working for her family’s

business, Carrfields, while husband Charlie has his own fertiliser spreading business. They are a busy family and know how hard it can be to make time for yourself, and that’s why Stacey is a fan of F45’s schedule and set times. “I just like the concept of F45 and how it can actually change people’s lives by improving their health and wellbeing through education, exercise and lifestyle changes,” Stacey said. Even Stacey has noticed a difference in her own fitness since starting F45. “Every day the classes are different, so you’ll turn up and nev-

er do the same workout, and the same workout is run across the world on that day which is the unique part about it,” Stacey said. It’s quick, sharp, high intensity interval training (HIIT) that is suitable for anyone of any ability. You just go at your own pace, Stacey said. Monday, Wednesday and Friday classes are cardio based, with Tuesdays and Thursdays focused on strength, while Saturday classes are longer – an hour – and a hybrid of the weekday classes. Technology plays a big part in F45 and all workouts are played through television screens, with

personal trainers on hand to make sure everyone is doing what they should be. There will be two to three experienced qualified trainers per class, so members will experience one-on-one training each time. For participants that want even more from their experience, they can join the F45 challenge, an eight-week programme that includes strict nutritional planning, before and after photos and body scans at the beginning and end of the challenge. Prizes are awarded for the best transformations both locally, and

globally. Currently there are four eight-week programmes including meal plans, shopping lists, and educational support. The nutritional goals include decreasing water retention, lessening sugar cravings, losing fat, and adding lean muscle. F45 Ashburton has secured a premises – off Burnett Street on the top floor of the ASB Bank building, overlooking East Street – and it is hoped it will open late in January. Stacey said they’ll look at doing some boot camps before opening, to give people a taste of what F45 is all about.

Colonies of the world’s rarest gull are just one of many contributing factors to E. coli in the Ashburton River, says Forest and Bird Ashburton. President Edith Smith was responding to concerns about critically endangered black-billed gulls’ impact on the river following an Ashburton Water Zone Committee last week. Environment Canterbury principal surface water scientist Adrian Meredith reported that avian species generated more than 50 per cent of the the E. coli bacteria in the river. It was likely the contamination pattern had been occurring for a long time but was only recognised as an issue when regular water sampling began. He said it was still important to reduce other known sources of E. coli, such as livestock. Smith responded that as numbers of critically endangered birds along the river had declined over generations, their impact on levels of E. coli had reduced. Other birds such as pigeons at the State Highway One bridge, various duck species, and large black backed gulls nesting in colonies, were also likely to be a source. Black-billed gulls and other critically endangered species such as banded dotterel and terns, generally settle on braided rivers for three months of the year over late spring and early summer to raise their

young, with the Ashburton being a crucial habitat. This week there are about 2500 blackbilled gulls in colonies around the State Highway One bridge, likely to be remnants of a population of about 8000 upstream of the bridge flooded out last month. The gulls are beginning to settle into their third nesting attempt for the season, after heavy rain. Smith said it was heartening to see the gulls had chosen the site yet again, as many Ashburton residents liked to view the birds and see their efforts to raise their chicks. “I’m hearing so much more positive response about the birds, people asking how are they doing. “It’s great to think people have a bit of a connection to the black-billed gulls, seeing them as belonging to Ashburton,” Smith said. The heavy rain and floods have made for a tough breeding season this year. There are about 4500 black-billed gulls at the Ashburton River mouth, down by about 1000 birds compared to last month. And the colonies there have fewer members than last year, when more than 9000 were at the site. A colony of white fronted terns had also been impacted, and now number less than 100. Last year the species had a better year at the river mouth, numbering several thousand.

Ashburton received more than triple its average rainfall last month, NIWA’s climate summaries released yesterday show. It was the second wettest November at the site since records began in 1909, and Ashburton’s third wettest ever spring. Last month 189 millimetres of rain fell, 3.25 times normal, surpassed only by the record year of 1952, when 273.10 millimetres fell in the town. For the three months of spring there was 312 millimetres. As of December 1, soil moisture levels closely resembled the rainfall anomalies of November throughout New Zealand, being significantly wetter than normal across large portions of the eastern and inland South Island, as well as the eastern North Island. Eastern and inland parts of Otago and Canterbury had below average temperatures for November, and there were plenty of highlights and extreme events throughout the country, including flooding, road washouts and slips. Ashburton made mention for its tornado of November 18. “Five spans of one irrigator were upended, and one span of another irrigator was bent in half,” climate scientists remarked.

Heading away on their big day out Members of growing Mid Canterbury Vintage Machinery Club enjoyed a good day out on Saturday for their annual tractor trek around the district. Always held on the first weekend of December, the trek sees any number of tractors and older model and style vehicles heading out on a day-long adventure and club chairman, John Hall said the 2018 edition was another fantastic event. “We had a great day out, it was really enjoyable,” Hall said. All counted 20 tractors took part in the trek, but other vehicles took the procession to above 30 – making for impressive sights as they rolled their way down some Mid Canterbury rural roads. The trek began at the club’s rooms at the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds before a first visit to Canterbury Dried Foods, then headed to David Fisher’s property on Beach Road before stopping in at the Lovett family farm for a spot of lunch. They then checked out Andrew West’s seed cleaning operation before a final stop at Peter Butterick’s property before returning to home base again. “It filled in the entire day and we were very lucky to have had the support of those places we stopped at, they were more than accommodating.” PHOTO SUPPLIED

A good man is stepping down A

The idea of holding public meetings to discuss such concerns was one of his and, although not as many were held as what he might have hoped, those that were held proved successful with strong public attendance. While disappointed to lose someone who looked set to make some real positive changes – there is solace for the

Mid Canterbury region in Dean’s departure. And that is that he’s not leaving for a reason which relates to us. He’s leaving for him. To retire. And, after 25 years on the front line serving this country as a police officer, it’s a decision well-deserved and one I’m sure we all wish him the best with. But there is one nagging question this news leaves us with. It’s been a while since we’ve had a top cop who has sat in the job for an extended period of time. Long enough to make a really big, strong impact anyway and there’s some preconception out

there that perhaps Ashburton is being used as a bit of a halfway house to offer a vehicle and district in which officers can boost their career experiences before heading off to do bigger, and in some cases, better things. It’s been a muttering that’s been around town for a while now and while there’s no direct proof of it – usually when there’s smoke, there’s a bit of fire burning below it. That’s not a black mark on any of the officers currently serving in the district either. Anyone who slips into the blue uniform everyday and does their best to keep us safe is an absolute legend, but perhaps it’s more a sign of the times.

Ashburton isn’t exactly a buzzing metropolis where big things happen every other day of the week. Police executing a search warrant is usually a pretty big deal around these parts, whereas those from bigger areas are more conversant with highspeed crashes, murders and major drug busts. So, you can see where the appeal is. It would be great to think that whoever steps into the role left vacant by Dean is here for a long haul and will be able to, over an extended period of time, bring new ideas and thoughts to the table that are for the betterment of the community.

job. The announcement of the pending retirement of our top cop, Phil Dean, will come as sad news to most of this district with his presence only really just starting to be felt in the community. Dean has proved himself in his short, but effective, time in the community. He’s been a prominent figure around the Ashburton township and has taken more steps than anyone to get the public more involved in the major issues which are facing the people of our district.

his time of year tends to get called The Silly Season. The Silly Season? Is it because people get daft and throw caution to the wind? Or that they over consume? Do stupid stuff? The sun makes them go a little mad? They spend ridiculous amounts of money on undesirable Christmas gifts? All a bit silly, I guess. Or is it simply an excuse not to stay level headed and to get completely reckless? “Let’s face it everyone gets a bit nutty this time of year”. Do they? (I thought they did it all year long). Originally, the term “silly season” came about when there was little news of any worth to report during summer. There simply was no real news and so silly stories made the headlines. Yet, it’s more commonly applied to eating, drinking and partying. It certainly gets a bit more than silly for medical staff and police responding to alcohol related incidents (which hugely increase through December). During the summer we are all out and about, attending barbecues, Christmas parties, meeting family and friends and consuming copious amounts of food and alcohol. And it can certainly take its toll. Most people use this time of year as an excuse to overindulge, after all, the rationalisation is that we deserve it. Then come January 1, we can change our wicked ways. But by then, we may have dug ourselves into a deep hole of unhealthy habits which seem to take on a life of their own. I’m not trying to be the fun police it’s just that I am seeing more and more cases of bingedrinking, where the intention is to drink large amounts and quickly, resulting in severe intoxication.

Emotions such as anxiety, fear and despair. If that’s the issue, let someone, like me, help you out with that. You don’t need to stay stuck in this downward spiral. All too often it ends in embarrassment, accidents, physical as well and emotional harm, all of which have consequences and repercussions. Intoxication can lead to injuries from black eyes to broken limbs to death; loss or damage to valuables, recklessness in behaviour from over spending to destroying friendships, relationships, even careers. Now that does sound silly, doesn’t it? If someone had a big night who knows what the morning will bring? One big night becomes several in a row, until they feel out

of control and the silly season extends into winter. Disguising their loneliness, sadness and insecurities until socialising without over consumption is no longer an option. Dealing with these behaviours doesn’t have to be as hard as you may imagine. With the right person to help, you can experience more equilibrium in your life and your habits. If you are going to get silly this season, make sure you have a back up plan so it doesn’t get stupid. Don’t make it about the alcohol, but about the socialising, having fun and relaxing in good company. Don’t be that person at the office party that makes a complete fool of themselves. You don’t need to be that silly. Sip water or juice in-between drinks and slow the pace down. Enjoy the

company about you and if you don’t like them, leave – grab a taxi and head for home. Summer, Christmas and the New Year is about getting out, connecting with loved ones and sharing love and laughter. It’s not about sitting in A&E or losing that promotion or having a drunken bust-up with your bestie. It also means that the police and medical personnel get an easier time too, they are, after all, working while you party.

Re Saturday’s front page story. I, for one, would not be the first to think this. If the ADC listened to the general public of Ashburton and not be so staunch and pig-headed about going ahead and building this art gallery, the Guardian would have to find something else to write about. John McGuire

GOP ‘a wasteland’ The cracks are showing within Donald Trump’s party as the enemy sharpens its knives, with GOP politicians confessing they are “frustrated”. As the US bids goodbye to former president George H.W. Bush, many Americans are questioning how much the Republican Party has changed since his heyday. The midterm elections has morphed from a slight shift to the left into a full-blown catastrophe for the GOP as the final results rolled in. The Republicans have lost 40 seats in the House of Representatives, six governorships, hundreds of state legislative seats and six state legislative chambers. Meanwhile – buoyed by their new majority in the House – the Democrats are inching closer to punishing Trump over alleged Russia collusion during the 2016 elections, and starting to identify strong frontrunners in the race for the 2020 presidential nominee. The GOP is struggling with internal disputes over issues including climate change and immigration. Some believe the party needs to split in two. Trump’s brash, individualistic White House has set the tone. He has worked out his strategy of appealing to the protectionist instincts of his core demographic of mainly white, male, working class voters, and will not deviate from it. Some members of his party are concerned it isn’t a winning strategy, but they are struggling to make themselves heard. “There has been close to no introspection in the GOP conference and really no coming to grips with the shifting demographics that get to why we lost those seats,” New York Republican Elise Stefanik told The New York Times. “I’m very frustrated and I know other members are frustrated.” Ryan Costello of Pennsylvania, one of a wave of GOP representatives choosing to retire, said: “It’s clear to me why we lost 40 seats; it was a referendum on the President.” Tom Rooney, who is also re-

The video, an homage to female-driven movies from the early 2000s, dropped on Friday after weeks of buildup – and set the record in just under 22 hours. Former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, who made huge donations to Democrats in the midterms, could threaten Biden for the centrist vote. Other possible challengers could include former Secretary of State and 2004 presidential nominee John Kerry and senators Cory Booker of New Jersey, Kirsten Gillibrand of New York and Californian Kamala Harris. The Golden State is a perfect example of what’s going wrong for Trump’s party. The midterms were a “predictable disaster” for Californian Republicans, according to the LA Times, after the party failed to make changes following the 2016 elections. The Democrats now have a supermajority in the California Assembly and Senate, with the House set to be made up of

46 Democrats and just seven Republicans. “The Grand Old Party is dead, partly because it has failed to separate itself from today’s toxic, national brand of Republican politics,” Kristin Olsen, former vice chair of the California GOP, told Cal Matters. But no one wants to be the person to stand up against Trump, with voters becoming more nationalised and partisan by the day. McCain strategist John Weaver said Trump and his backers had turned Orange County into “a GOP wasteland”. “You want to see the future?” Weaver asked Politico yesterday. “Look no further than the demographic death spiral in the place once considered a cornerstone of the party.” - PA

Cher, Reba McEntire, and the creators of the Broadway musical Hamilton have gathered in Washington to enter the ranks of highly celebrated artists as recipients of the Kennedy Center Honours. Cher, the Oscar-winning actress and pop icon, and McEntire, a country music singer and songwriter, joined jazz musician Wayne Shorter and composer Philip Glass to receive the awards, which recognise a lifetime of contributions to the arts. President Donald Trump and his wife, Melania, stayed away for the second year in a row. Cher suggested she would not have shown up if Trump had been present.

Modern Family star Sarah Hyland has copped a social media battering in the wake of her young cousin’s death, with some questioning why the wealthy TV star is using her Instagram and Twitter accounts to solicit donations from members of the public. Hyland’s cousin Trevor was killed in an alleged drink driving accident, a crash that left her uncle seriously injured. Trevor’s sister Tessa has set up a GoFundMe page with a goal of $25,000 – a goal that has already been exceeded. It’s estimated Hyland has amassed a $US9 million fortune. Given her comparatively immense wealth, many on social media took Hyland to task.

Doubts have been raised about New Zealand software firm 9 Spokes’ ability to continue as a going concern, despite the ASXlisted company receiving government assistance through Callaghan Innovation. 9 Spokes, which is chaired by former Telecom chief executive Paul Reynolds, reported its firsthalf financial results on Friday showing a net loss of $4.95 million for the six months to September 30, better than the $10.56m loss the same period a year ago. Revenue more than doubled to $4.9m. However, accumulated losses have now surpassed the company’s share capital and stood at $48.9m at balance date. 9 Spokes, which provides online, software as a service for small and medium businesses, is attempting to raise capital but discussions with potential investors have not yet concluded with-

The company has entered into a short-term funding facility to provide working capital in the meantime and as at September 31 had drawn down $500,000 of a $2.5m facility that carries a 6 per cent interest rate rising to 12 per cent on January 1. Independent auditor PwC issued a “disclaimer of conclusion” on the financial statements, highlighting material uncertainties casting doubt on its ability to continue as a going concern. It noted 9 Spokes had available cash of $1.6m, of which $400,000 was restricted as security for a building lease. The auditor drew attention to the conditions of the short-term funding facility, ability to obtain sufficient additional funding within the next three months and secure sustainable revenue as material uncertainties. “As a result … we were therefore not able to obtain sufficient appropriate evidence to enable us to express a conclusion as to whether the going concern assumption is appropriate,” PwC said. - NZME

#MeToo era: Avoid women at all cost No more dinners with female colleagues. Don’t sit next to them on flights. Book hotel rooms on different floors. Avoid one-on-one meetings. In fact, as a wealth adviser put it, just hiring a woman these days is “an unknown risk.” What if she took something he said the wrong way? Across Wall Street, men are adopting controversial strategies for the #MeToo era and, in the process, making life even harder for women. Call it the Pence Effect, after US Vice President Mike Pence, who has said he avoids dining alone with any woman other than his wife. In finance, the overarching

impact can be, in essence, gender segregation. Interviews with more than 30 senior executives suggest many are spooked by #MeToo and struggling to cope. “It’s creating a sense of walking on eggshells,” said David Bahnsen, a former managing director at Morgan Stanley. This is hardly a single-industry phenomenon, as men across the country check their behaviour at work, to protect themselves in the face of what they consider unreasonable political correctness – or to simply do the right thing. The upshot is forceful on Wall Street, where women are scarce in the upper ranks. The industry has also long nurtured a culture that

keeps harassment complaints out of the courts and public eye, and has so far avoided a mega-scandal like the one that has engulfed Harvey Weinstein. Now, more than a year into the #MeToo movement – with its devastating revelations of harassment and abuse in Hollywood, Silicon Valley and beyond – Wall Street risks becoming more of a boys’ club, rather than less of one. “Women are grasping for ideas on how to deal with it, because it is affecting our careers,” said Karen Elinski, president of the Financial Women’s Association and a senior vice president at Wells Fargo & Co. “It’s a real loss.” - NZME

A big Christchurch-headquartered builder, which had $35 million of projects under way last year in Auckland, is in liquidation. Corbel Construction is a commercial and residential building company headquartered on Lichfield Street, Christchurch. It has carried out extensive seismic, leaky building, education and healthcare projects, including work for the Ministry of Education. Its liquidation follows the collapse of Ebert Construction, working on many big apartment jobs in Auckland, and losses of nearly $1b from Fletcher Building’s construction division. Corbel’s website is no longer active and staff have sent emails out saying the firm is in the hands of Ashton Wheelans, Christchurch accountants. The reception there yesterday said a director, Andrew Oorschot, was the liquidator. Companies Office records also show the liquidation. Corbel director and 48 per cent shareholder Mark Wells says he no longer works for the business: “Unfortunately the business has gone into liquidation. For any inquiries please contact the liquidators at Ashton Wheelans,” his

Delicious and easy nibbles While we have an entire year to entertain, catch up with friends and share special times, too often the catching up is left until Christmas. In addition to organising summer holidays and the actual Christmas event, many people try to cram in a spot of home entertaining. All added pressure. Quick and easy nibbles are then the order of the day. Something to not only mop up alcohol but also to tempt the taste buds. Thai sausage rolls 3 spring onions, chopped roughly 1 clove garlic 1T fresh ginger, grated 1 red chilli, seeds removed, sliced 1/2 lemon, zested 1/2 C coriander leaves 1/2 t salt 500g chicken mince 4 sheets puff pastry, rolled 1 egg 1 sprinkle poppy seeds, to top 1 bottle sweet chilli sauce, to serve

Seafood skewers 2 cloves garlic ¼ C extra virgin olive oil 1 lemon 1 red chilli Salt 24 raw prawn cutlets 12 scallops 100g bacon pieces ■ Place 12 bamboo skewers in water to soak. ■ Mix together olive oil, crushed and finely chopped garlic, finely grated lemon rind, deseeded and finely chopped red chilli and sea salt. ■ Place prawns and scallops in a shallow bowl and pour over the oil mixture. ■ Refrigerate for 1 hour. ■ Thread a piece of bacon onto a skewer followed by a prawn, scallop, bacon, prawn and then bacon. ■ Continue with remaining skewers until you have used up ingredients and skewers. ■ Cook kebabs for 1 to 2 minutes each side on a hot barbecue or griddle.

Chilli, lime and chicken skewers 1 fresh long green chilli, chopped finely 1 onion, quartered 2 cloves garlic, quartered 1T ground coriander 1T lime juice 2T olive oil Salt Pepper 8 chicken thigh fillets, cut into 2.5cm pieces 1/4 C firmly packed fresh coriander, chopped, plus extra, to serve 16 bamboo skewers ■ Blend or process chilli, onion, garlic, ground coriander, juice and oil until mixture forms a smooth paste. ■ Season to taste. ■ Combine chicken and paste in a medium-sized bowl. Thread onto 16 skewers. ■ Cook skewers on an oiled barbecue or grill plate on high, for 3-4 minutes each side or until cooked through ■ Serve with fresh coriander leaves sprinkled over the top.

■ Preheat oven to 200°C. Line an oven tray with baking paper. ■ Place spring onion, garlic, ginger, chilli, lemon, coriander, salt, pepper and chicken mince in a large bowl. ■ Combine really well using a fork or your hands. ■ Lay puff pastry sheets out on a lightly floured bench. ■ Divide mixture between the four pieces and spread in a line at one end. ■ Brush edges of pastry with water ■ Roll each piece to shape a log. ■ Cut off any excess pastry. ■ Place rolls on to baking sheet. Refrigerate until needed. ■ Slice rolls every 1½cm, part-way through. ■ Brush with egg and sprinkle on poppy seeds. ■ Bake for 25 minutes until golden and puffed. ■ Finish cutting through when hot. ■ Serve with sweet chilli sauce.

Thai ﬁsh cakes with avocado salsa 300g firm white-fleshed fish, roughly chopped Leaves from 2-3 stalks coriander 1 small red onion, diced 1-2t green curry paste, or to taste 1 egg 1T sesame oil Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1/2 C soya oil – for frying Avocado salsa: 1 avocado, diced Juice of half a lemon 1/2 red onion, finely diced 1T chopped coriander leaves 2T sweet chilli sauce ■ Combine the fish, coriander, red onion and curry paste in the bowl of a food processor. ■ Pulse until they are well blended. ■ Add the egg and sesame oil and process until smooth ■ Season to taste with salt and pepper. ■ Heat the soy oil in a deep frying pan. ■ Place tablespoon-sized balls of the fish mixture in the pan, pressing them down gently to flatten them slightly. ■ Fry the fish cakes on both sides until they are golden and cooked through. ■ Remove the fish cakes from the pan and drain them on paper towels.

Potato and salmon frittata 1.25kg peeled potatoes 6 eggs 600ml cream 400g sliced smoked salmon 3/4 C tasty cheese, grated 1/4 C dill, chopped plus extra to serve 1/4 C parsley, chopped Sour cream to serve ■ Preheat oven to 150°C. ■ Lightly grease and line a 3.5cmdeep, 20cm x 30cm dish with baking paper. ■ Place potatoes in a saucepan and cover with water ■ Bring to the boil. Reduce heat to medium and cook for 12-15 minutes or until tender ■ Drain and once cooled, thinly slice. ■ In a jug, whisk eggs and cream together. Season to taste. ■ Arrange half of the potatoes over the base of the dish followed by half of the salmon, cheese, then herbs. ■ Pour over half of the egg mixture. ■ Repeat for the next layer, using the other half of the potatoes, salmon, cheese and herbs. ■ Bake for 55-60 minutes or until just set in the centre. ■ Cool to room temperature. ■ Chill until ready to serve. ■ Cut frittata into squares. ■ Top with dollop of sour cream and extra dill.

Chocolate trifle 2 x 85g packets raspberry-flavoured jelly crystals 500g strawberries, sliced 1/4 C caster sugar 500ml custard 200g dark chocolate, melted 2 x 340g chocolate logs, unfilled 500ml cream, whipped 250g fresh raspberries 1/3 C hazelnut liqueur (or strong, sweet coffee) 1 x 30g Flake chocolate bar ■ Make jelly following packet directions and pour in to a rectangular slice pan to set. Cover and refrigerate for several hours or until set. ■ Turn jelly out onto a board lined with baking paper and cut into cubes. ■ Place the strawberries in a shallow dish and scatter with sugar. Stand for 10 minutes. ■ To make the chocolate custard, pour custard into a large bowl,

the base and halfway up the side of a large, 14-cup serving bowl. Spoon one-third each of the strawberries and raspberries over the cake slices. Sprinkle half the liqueur on top. Lay half of the cut up jelly over the fruit then top with half of the custard. Lay the remaining sponge slices on top of the custard and up the side of the dish. Top with half the remaining fruit, remaining liqueur, jelly and custard. Cover and refrigerate until serving. When ready to serve, spoon the remaining cream over the custard. Makayla Templeton has taken the next step towards her future as a professional cricketer, being selected for the Northern Districts under-21 team at just 16 years of age. Templeton will travel with the team to a tournament in two weeks in Auckland where she will face off against the best U21 players in the country. “It was my goal to get into the team but I didn’t necessarily think I was going to make it,” Templeton said. The Whangārei Girls’ High School student had shown promise as a talented batter and leg-spin bowler, competing for her school’s top team as well as the Whangārei Boys’ High School 2nd Xl. Fake news is bad news I

magine finding out via social media that a loved family member has passed away. Now, imagine finding out that your loved family member is actually still alive and kicking and the news is just some cruel joke or misunderstanding. That’s what happened to one of New Zealand cricket’s most famous families at the weekend, when a Facebook fan page post surfaced announcing that former Black Cap Nathan McCullum had died from complications while in hospital. The person probably most surprised by the news was Nathan himself, who was busy socialising with some mates after a day of bowls. He took it well, with a bit of humour, quickly tweeting that he was in fact alive and kicking. But brother Brendon didn’t see the funny side. He tweeted that he was on a flight back to New Zealand flying home from the T20 league in the United Arab Emirates at the time, and his heart broke.

He vowed to track down whoever was behind the fake news. But how easy would that be to do? The post was made on the New Zealand Cricket FanHub Facebook page on Sunday night, which later posted an apology to the McCullum family for the post and their poor research. As of yesterday that Facebook page had 25,000 followers (I don’t know what it was before this incident), and many of those followers weren’t understanding at all, they were angry, very angry. Someone from the page posted, asking people to calm down, and said that everyone made mistakes. Yes, everyone does make mistakes, but this one was a cracker. So, where did it all stem from? That is the question. The initial post said his death had been announced by his wife Vanessa, via Twitter, but surely everyone should know by now, you can’t always trust everything you read on social media.

If you wanted to, you could right now jump on Twitter or Facebook and create your own Vanessa McCullum profile. Pretty much, you could be anyone you want. On the fan page there was a screenshot from Google, which showed that McCullum’s Wikipedia page stated that he had died on December 1, 2018, aged 38. But the question is, how did that information come to be on his Wikipedia page? Earlier this year I attended the 2018 Mid Canterbury Sports Awards where Nathan McCullum was the guest speaker, and he was truly amazing – in fact one of the best speakers I’ve

ever had the pleasure of listening to. He’s lived a fascinating life, but let’s be honest, he’s always lived a little bit in the shadow of brother Brendon when it came to cricketing prowess. So if someone’s sitting out there thinking, ‘hey, let’s play a trick on the world and tell them that someone’s died’, why him? Of all the people in the world, and of the two McCullums, why Nathan? In the world of journalism there’s a few golden rules we live by to ensure what we’re putting out into the public arena is correct, and not fake news. One pretty big one is that if you hear that someone of note has died, you get 100 per cent, rock solid, official confirmation by someone in the know before you even think of reporting it. But in the day and age we live in now, where the race is on to be the first to break big news and social media is instant, it’s vitally important to make sure the news you’re getting is from a reliable source.

Will there be sledging? India’s cricketers are uncertain what to expect from the new-age Australians. Will they be sledged by the Aussies in the first test starting tomorrow in Adelaide? Or will the host nation play nice? India batsman Cheteshwar Pujara isn’t sure. “Sledging, I don’t know,” Pujara said. “But one thing which we are sure of is to play competitive cricket and enjoy our game rather than worrying about sledging. What we are focused on is to play good cricket and to win the test series here.” India haven’t won a test series in Australia in 11 attempts but most pundits rate this their best chance. - AAP

Kohli’s personality, batting, leadership and every move are under intense scrutiny ahead of the series-opener in Adelaide. Kaharau thriving down south Seven-year-old stayer Kaharau bounced back to winning form on Sunday for Ruakaka trainers Ken Rae and Krystal WilliamsTuhoro, winning the No Limits Interiors Open Handicap (2030m) at Cromwell. The gelding hadn’t won since defeating subsequent Gr.1 Auckland Cup (3200m) winner Ladies First in the Nathan’s Memorial (2400m) back in February and won well under a good ride from Terry Moseley. Despite being trained at the other end of the country, it was Kaharau’s second victory on the Cromwell course, having won over the same distance at the once a year course in 2015. “I love it down there,” Rae said.

“It’s very hard with the weight he gets, but down there on those smaller tracks he seems to enjoy it. “He’s gone to the paddock for a couple of days and will spend some time on the walker, and he will probably run on Boxing Day at Wingatui. “There’s an Open 2200m for Kaharau and a Listed Open sprint for Prom Queen.” Rae said the lease on Prom Queen from Windsor Park Stud expires at the end of the season, but he was keen to see if he could race the speedy mare in foal. “Our lease runs out on the 31st of July, but I’m keen to see if we can race her in foal so I can give her a decent break at some point,” he said. - NMZE

The six-year-old daughter of Lookin At Lucky had a solid spring, contesting all three legs of the Hawke’s Bay spring carnival, recording three minor placings there, including third behind stablemate Melody Belle in the Gr.1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m). Our Abbadean will begin her summer campaign on Saturday where she will tackle the Gr.1 Rydges Wellington Captain Cook Stakes (1600m) and her trainer is happy with her heading into the race fresh-up. “We’re bringing Our Abbadean down for the Captain Cook. “She trialed really well on Tuesday at Matamata behind Jon Snow,” Richards said. “I was really pleased with that. “We are just trying to keep her fresh so she can sprint well at a mile. “She’ll be a good chance.” Meanwhile, Richards will

head into summer racing with a strong arsenal that includes three-time Group One winner Melody Belle. “She looks terrific. “She trialed well at Matamata last Tuesday and she’ll trial again at Te Aroha on Tuesdayweek,” Richards said. “She’ll run first-up in the Railway. “She’s going really well.” Melody Belle will likely be joined in the Gr.1 Sistema Railway (1200m) on New Year’s Day by Group One-winning stablemate, Sword of Osman. “Sword of Osman has been nominated for the Railway. “He’ll be going for a gallop at Ellerslie in about ten days’ time. “He could well run in the Hallmark, but I just wonder if a three-year-old is going to be competitive at set weights and penalties in races like the Railway and the Telegraph. “We are just feeling our way a bit with him. “He’s done about a week’s work and we’ll really up the pace with him later in the week.” - NZME

An oversight from top trainer Tim Butt has ended his Inter Dominion pacing assault. And cost him $1000 in the process. Butt had his two pacers Let It Ride and Italian Delight withdrawn from their heats at Ballarat last night and therefore the remainder of the series after he took blood off them on Monday for a routine blood test. Harness Racing Victoria rules forbid horses having any form of injection used on them for a clear 24 hours before raceday so stewards had little option but to scratch the pair. The irony is Butt actually told the stewards he had broken the rule. “They rang me to ask how the horses were and I told them I had just taken a blood to have it tested to make sure they were fine,” said Butt. “Then they told me I can’t do that and it dawned on me, no injections the day before the races even if it is extracting rather than putting anything into the horses. “It is totally my mistake, so I will have to cop that and apologise to the owners.” - HRNZ

Piatua misses again Former All Black Charles Piutau’s dreams of playing in a Rugby World Cup have been ended – again. Piutau, who played 17 tests for the All Blacks between 2013 and 2015, was set to represent Tonga at next year’s event in Japan but due to a three-year stand-down period, the 27-year-old fullback has been ruled out. Players such as Piutau must qualify through an Olympic Sevens tournament after their stand-down period – an eligibility requirement Tonga coach Toutai Kefu said was impossible to move in time for the World Cup. The sidecars were lured to the track by the prospect of the track’s new clay surface, and they formed part of a full racing programme which included the Canterbury Youth Ministock Series, a demolition derby and fast blast stockcar soccer – a new concept that only debuted at Ashburton Speedway a few months ago, where the soccer ‘ball’ was instead a car. C grade, saloons, productions, youth and adult ministocks, stockcars and streetstocks all took to the track during a full afternoon of racing at what was the Ashburton Speedway’s Christmas meeting.
