others smashed windows to gain access to cigarettes but Edwards was caught after an observant member of the public called 111 then followed their van. Edwards appeared in the Ashburton District Court on Monday before Judge Joanna Maze, who sentenced him to nine months’ supervision, three

Tahr backdown ‘best possible outcome’ By Katie todd

Local hunters are rapt with the Conservation Minister’s decision to rethink a planned tahr cull, saying common sense has prevailed. Eugenie Sage met with hunting groups, conservation groups and iwi on Monday to discuss the controversial cull, and has looking at taking an “adaptive management approach” rather than culling up to 17,500 of the animals in the next eight months. Sage first announced the plans two weeks ago and met strong opposition from groups around the county. More than 32,000 people signed a petition against the cull, and a Givealittle page collected $156,000 in donations for a legal injunction. Sage, Forest & Bird and the Department of Conservation spoke of “excessive” tahr numbers – of more than 35,000 – and the subsequent threat to native species. But many recreational hunters felt the plans were rushed and based on very rough population estimates.

Kelvin Williams, treasurer of the Ashburton branch of the New Zealand Deerstalkers Association, said he welcomes the idea of just 6000 tahr being culled in the next two months, and no bull tahr. “It’s pretty close to the best possible outcome,” he said. “This issue is not just about tahr and hunting, it’s part of who we are.”

Tahr hunting brings a lot of money into New Zealand, he said, and local hunters will be able to continue hunting recreationally, and contributing to conservation efforts themselves. Sage advised that DOC still expects to cull 10,000 tahr by next August, but will be reviewing plans later this year in consultation with a Tahr Liason Group.

However, Forest & Bird advised yesterday that no formal agreement had been reached at the meeting. They had not agreed on a reduction in the numbers of animals to be killed, and contacted DOC with their concerns. Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon said he welcomed a back-down on the original plan.

“Eugenie Sage made an ideological decision based on flimsy evidence,” he said. “A bull tahr is worth $14,000 so it made no sense that the Minister wanted them specifically targeted. One local operator I spoke to stood to lose in excess of $250,000 if the cull had gone ahead with the numbers proposed.” He said Sage will need to listen to hunters and the industry, “which she should have done to begin with”. Sage said the meeting on Monday was a constructive one with everyone listening and contributing. “The department will finalise its operational plan for Himalayan tahr control, taking account of the views expressed. “Hunting organisations want DOC to avoid targeting Himalayan bull tahr while the Aoraki Conservation Board and Forest and Bird want to see measurable progress in bringing tahr numbers down and back within the limit of 10,000 animals in the Himalayan Tahr Control Plan.”

Interlock sentence count up by 2 Two more alcohol interlock sentences were handed out by Ashburton District Court Judge Joanna Maze this week, one to a 40-yearold man who blew 901mcg and the other to a 19-year-old with two drink driving convictions in a year. Each interlock sentence costs around $3000 and involves a breath-testing device being fitted to an offender’s car for a set period, followed by three years on a zero alcohol licence. New legislation that came into

force in July makes interlocks mandatory for drink drive offenders who blow more than 800mcg or who have had two drink drive convictions within five years. Vaioulu Aloisio Tominiko, 40, admitted drink driving on East Street on September 23. Police breath-tested him after stopping him at 1.40am and he blew 901mcg. The legal limit is 250mcg. Tominiko’s lawyer Roz Burnside said he was a first offender with a job. “He went to dinner and ac-

■ INDONESIAN EARTHQUAKE

The situation is ‘pretty dire’ A 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia on Saturday killing around 850 people and decimating the regional capital of Palu. Ashburton Guardian reporter Katie Todd’s 25-year-old brother, a pilot, was situated around 100 kilometres south of the epicentre when the quake and proceeding tsunami struck. He is one of two Kiwis understood to be in the Sulawesi area and his airline, Susi Air, is now assisting the Indonesian military’s rescue efforts. He spoke exclusively with the Ashburton Guardian in between flights. By Katie todd

The sun was setting in the small town of Masamba and Andrew Todd had just decided on fried chicken for dinner when it happened. He and three other pilots were relaxing around the dining table at their crew house, when the clock struck 6.02pm and the rumbles began. Cupboards rattled, water sloshed around the cooler, and the dining room light swung from side to side like a pendulum. “It wasn’t just a sharp jolt,” he said. “It just sort of built up slowly. And it went on, for at least 60 seconds.” He said it was difficult to stand, let alone walk. “I’ve felt some good quakes living in Wellington ... this was way, way worse.” When the movement stopped and silence fell across the small town, the four pilots, all unharmed, searched for phone signal to see if their fellow Susi Air staff were okay. “We found out that the situation up north in Palu was pretty bad –

even worse than where we were. Palu has skyscrapers and a lot had gone down.” Palu, a seaside city of 335,000 residents, also had the threat of tsunamis to consider. Alarms sounded out and city residents began to make their way inland. Thirty-four minutes later the alarm was cancelled and many made their way back towards the seaside. But it was ten minutes too soon. Waves up to three metres smashed through the town wiping out homes, temples and hundreds of lives. “Later that evening was when we started hearing reports of it being bad, really bad,” Todd said. As dawn broke over Indonesia the following day, the four pilots were contacted by Susi Air and put on standby. They were advised that they would be heading to Palu themselves to help out with the rescue effort, and would be flying there as soon as the runway at Palu Airport was deemed safe enough to land on. Roof panels and damaged equipment had tumbled down inside the terminals and deep cracks had torn across the tarmac. Like the rest of Palu, there is still no running water or electricity. Todd’s first task was to take two local reporters to Palu and pick up several Susi Air ground crew members from the airport. From 8000 feet, he has been able to see the full extent of the devastation. “Whole mountains have changed shape,” he said. Steep terrain, once speckled with small villages, are now scarred

with hundreds of huge landslides. From the air, he said, you can see dust rising into the air as aftershocks create more slips. “It usually takes a few days to get to some of those villages. Now that they are cut off we can only assume there’s a lot of damage that we don’t know about yet,” he said. Closer to Palu, the shoreline has visibly shifted and palm trees are lying flat. Once green paddocks now shine brown with dirty water and huge suburbs have been consumed by liquefaction. Cities lay in rubble ruins, dotted with emergency camps. Todd has since made frequent trips to Palu Airport, from a new

base at Mamuju. He has been dropping off hundreds of kilograms worth of medical supplies and emergency food at a time and described the situation beyond the airport gates as “pretty dire”. Thousands of refugees have been queuing up in 30-40°C heat to be evacuated in military planes. “You can see families sheltering under fire trucks, sharing bottles of water, desperate to get out. It’s pretty sad.” Todd does not know how long he will be helping out, nor what he will be asked to do each day, but said it will no doubt be a “massive clean-up effort.” “We’re just taking it as it comes.”

Control tower opens to crowd of aviation enthusiasts BY SUSAN SANDYS

Building a replica of Ashburton Airport’s original control tower has been a labour of love for Ashburton Aviation Museum members. And they got to display the product of all their hard work on Sunday, when the tower was officially opened. Aviation museum member and project co-ordinator Brian Mitchell said it was fantastic to see about 130 people turn out from throughout Canterbury for the event. Aircraft, including two Spitfires and a Mustang, flew in and added to the field of interesting flying machines, which also included samples from the museum’s hangar. Members built the nine-metrehigh replica tower based on old photographs. Pre-World War Two, and for a decade after, the airport was used as a training base for the military airforce and territorials, prior to the tower’s demolition in the early 1960s. The replica was a two-year, $125,000 project, made possible by donations, including a sizeable one from the late Eric Drewitt, an aviation museum founding member. Drewitt’s daughter Caroline

and her children were guests of honour and cut the ribbon at the event. Mitchell said the tower was mainly for display purposes,

however, it could be used in the future at fly-in events. “It’s good for observing the field and keeping an eye on aircraft,” he said.

Copper theft leads to conviction A 29-year-old shearer who broke into the former quakedamaged Bruce Printing building and stole copper and lead was convicted of burglary and discharged when he appeared in the Ashburton District Court this week. Shane James Dennison was jointly charged with his then partner, Sharna Marie Lynn Meaclem, and the pair had been struggling financially at the time. They onsold the copper and lead for $68. Judge Joanna Maze said the matter had been to a restorative justice meeting, where the building owner had raised concerns about the safety of anyone illegally in the building, which was quake-damaged. The building was demolished in August. Cameron Roger Leahy, 25, admitted driving while his licence was suspended because of excess demerit points. He was fined $200 and disqualified for six months from December 20, when the current period of suspension ends. Callum Graham, 19, was sentenced to a combination of supervision and community work on a charge of assaulting a woman. The pair had been involved in a drunken argument following an evening at a nightclub and Graham pushed her, hit her on the back of the head and choked her. Judge Maze sentenced him to nine months supervision,

60 hours community work and ordered him to pay $400 to the victim. She said Graham needed to address his abuse of alcohol. Malcolm Eric Morunga, 46, had his jail term converted to home detention. Morunga was sentenced to 18 months in June for assault, threatening to kill and driving while suspended. He used a tyre iron in the assault. Judge Maze said time already served by Morunga before and after sentencing converted to four months home detention with electronic monitoring. She accepted an address put forward by Morunga’s lawyer Roz Burnside and said conditions would include no contact with the assault complainant. The home detention will be followed by six months post-release conditions. An Ashburton man had outstanding fines and enforcement fees of $12,000 converted to 80 hours community work when he appeared before Judge Maze. James Patrick Pearton, 51, had admitted driving while his licence was suspended. He was caught at an alcohol checkpoint. Pearton’s fines were revealed as the judge fixed his penalty, which also included a six-month ban from driving. She remitted $3000 in enforcement fees and said the $9000 owed in fines would be remitted when the community work was done.

and ability levels. Competitors slash and slide through a hand-built berm track, vying for the fastest time across a range of divisions. This year’s groms category was taken out by Cassandra Lyell in the women’s and Asher Bolt in the men’s. The masters category

was won by Claudia Bings, and Ashburton’s own Richie Johnson, while the open category was won by Hannah Orchard and Mt Hutt’s own Dre Genest. Prizes included gear from Cheapskates and treats from Dom’s Pizza and Kebabs Methven.

Edwards told the probation officer who recommended community work that he did not consider he was liable for all the reparation. But Judge Maze said it was logical the full amount would fall to him as he would not furnish the names of his co-offenders to police and therefore no-one else had been charged. Edwards had been drinking

with friends on the afternoon of January 31 then in the early hours of the following morning went to Tinwald with them, where they announced their intention to rob the Z Energy petrol station. Wearing bandanas and hoodies, and armed with bolt cutters and grinders, they smashed the front window and entered the service station. When they couldn’t break into the locked cigarette dispenser, they took cigars and left the shop. They then drove to Allenton and parked in an alleyway behind

the GAS service station. Again, they smashed the front window and took cigarettes. Edwards was seen dropping both cigarettes and bedding that had been used to carry them as they left on Allens Road. A witness who saw the smashed window called 111 and then pulled in front of the offenders’ van. Edwards and his co-offenders manoeuvred around the vehicle and drove west, with the witness in pursuit, giving updates to police.

When legislation stops drink-driving W

hen new legislation came into place in July, which resulted in interlocks becoming mandatory for recidivist drink-drivers, there was a strong expectation that the Ashburton District would see a number of road users being forced by the judge to have them installed. Court-ordered alcohol interlock devices are now mandatory for people who have committed serious driving offences. Anyone caught driving with a breath alcohol level at or over 800 micrograms of alcohol per litre of blood or who has been convicted of repeat drink-driving offences is eligible for a device.

And now, nearly three months on from the introduction – there’s no doubt that they’re becoming more and more common. In the Ashburton District Court this week the seventh interlock device was ordered by a judge since their inception here and there are other incidents, heard away from the Ashburton District Court, involving locals which have seen them enforced.

Comparatively, up in the Whanganui District Court, only two interlock device orders have been issued. Now, there are a number of ways around having one enforced which may have brought that number down, but apples for apples it shows we aren’t setting a very good trend here. One only has to look at the extremely high number of drinkdriving offences which appeared in the Ashburton District Court this week to realise that the perception of things being a little more relaxed in the rural areas is fake news. There’s too many. In fact, one drink driver is too

many – but it’s a horrible look for the district and so legislations, which see things like the interlock device becoming more prominent in the court system, are a good step in the right direction The interlock device might be seen by some as a little over the top, but many are seeing it as a real deterrent for repeat offenders who continually find themselves in the dock answering to another charge of drink driving. Not only is there the cost involved with having one installed in a vehicle, but the considerable level of inconvenience would likely be enough to drive most to pledge to never drink and get behind the wheel again.

So, perhaps this is the first step in the right direction to reducing the number of alcohol-impaired drivers on our road. There will always be those who make the simple mistake of thinking they haven’t drunk enough to fail any test that might come their way, but the interlock is more focused on the big numbers, the high readings and the repeat offenders, the ones who are more likely to, once again, find themselves facing the wrath of a judge. But perhaps, with a little more prominence, the new legislation might just be enough to get people thinking about the negative impact of getting behind the wheel after a few too many.

Visiting Ashburton’s unique historic site R

ecently, several councillors and I had the opportunity to visit an impressive historic site right here in Ashburton. The Chinese Settlement village dates back to 1921 when the Ng family established a market garden under the trading name King Bros. Prior to that, they had established a market garden in Gore dating further back to 1905. Today, the site is probably a one-of-a-kind in New Zealand, according to a senior archaeologist with Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga, Frank van der Heijden. He explained that the site has high historical value, especially because the buildings are still here. He also suggested that there used to be hundreds, if not

thousands, of these kind of settlements all throughout New Zealand, but to their knowledge, only this one remains. The purpose of our visit was to better familiarise ourselves with the site, as for the most part we had only seen images and reviewed reports at our meetings. Being physically present provided a unique experience allowing us to recognise the unique character and meaningful significance of the site. As I walked along the outside

of the buildings, peering in through the windows to see living quarters, an office, what appeared to be a kitchen area, old cabinets and even an in-ground cooler box, I could not help but imagine what life must have been like for these early settlers. This site can tell us a lot about our history. Preserving this place is important to Council which is why we signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ng family in 2013, allowing us to be the custodians of the site. Part of our responsibility is to do the best we can to restore and protect all items of heritage value, including the structures, whilst working closely and in cooperation with the family. Van der Heijden hopes to declare our Chinese Settlement an archaeological site which, if suc-

cessful, will be only the eighth of its kind in New Zealand with this classification (post 1900s). FBI given freer rein in probe The White House has given the FBI clearance to interview anyone it wants to in its investigation of sexual misconduct allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. The new guidance was issued to the FBI over the weekend in response to Democratic and news media pushback that the scope of the probe was too narrow. It comes as the FBI presses ahead with its investigation, questioning in recent days at least two people about accusations of misconduct against Kavanaugh dating to when he was in high school and college. President Donald Trump, addressing those concerns at a news conference, said he wants the FBI to do a “comprehensive” investigation and “it wouldn’t bother me at all” if agents pursued accusations made by three women who have come forward publicly. But he also said Senate Republicans are determining the

Ramirez also provided investigators with the names of others who she said could corroborate her account, according to a person familiar with her questioning. Kavanaugh has denied the allegation. A separate accuser, California college professor Christine Blasey Ford, had not been contacted by the FBI to schedule an interview, according to a person close to her. Ford has accused Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her when they were teenagers, sharing the allegation at an extraordinary congressional hearing last week that also included Kavanaugh’s angry and emotional denial. – AP

Christmas album for Legend Recent EGOT winner John Legend always seems to be ahead of the times. This year, he’s even celebrating Christmas in October. The multiplatinum singersongwriter announced his first Christmas album, A Legendary Christmas, on Twitter. The minute-long video includes a behindthe-scenes look at a holiday-themed photo shoot with Legend and his wife, Chrissy Teigen, and their daughter, Luna, as well as a snippet of Bring Me Love,” one of six original tracks on the album. Man rescued alive three days after quake Rescuers in Indonesia have pulled a 38-year-old man out alive from beneath a collapsed building three days after an earthquake and tsunami devastated the city of Palu. Indonesian TV stations showed video from the National Search and Rescue Agency of its workers freeing Sapri Nusin from the rubble of a destroyed finance building. He was conscious and talking to his rescuers as they worked by flashlight. After freeing him, rescuers put him on a stretcher and carried him away. There was no immediate word on his condition. At least 844 people have been confirmed dead since

a 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck late last week, followed by a tsunami with waves as high as six metres. That number is expected to rise as search teams continue their work and reach more remote areas on the island of Sulawesi. Nearly 50,000 people have been displaced by the disaster. Earlier some 100 Indonesian troops left the city of Makassar in southern Sulawesi island, more than 700km from Palu, to help with rescue efforts in the devastated areas. They were expected to join some 1300 personnel already on site, including military and police, and were bringing

food, water and other supplies. Dozens of people were reported trapped in the rubble of several hotels and a mall in Palu, with hundreds more feared buried in landslides that engulfed villages. President Joko Widodo told reporters getting them out was a priority. Indonesia’s disaster agency said later more heavy equipment and personnel were needed to recover bodies. A mass burial of victims has begun, with Local Army Commander Tiopan Aritonang saying that 545 bodies would be brought from one hospital alone. A 10m by 100m grave was

being dug in Palu. One woman was recovered alive from ruins overnight in the Palu neighbourhood of Balaroa, where about 1700 houses were swallowed up when the earthquake caused soil to liquefy, the national rescue agency said. All but 23 of the confirmed deaths were in Palu, a city of about 380,000 people, however nearly three days on from the earthquake and tsunami the extent of the disaster was not known. Authorities are bracing for the toll to possibly climb into the thousands as connections with remote areas up and down the coast are restored. – AP

Gwyneth Paltrow marries Gwyneth Paltrow tied the knot with TV producer Brad Falchuk on Saturday in a wedding the star considers her first. While the Oscar-winning actress, 46, has been previously married to Coldplay’s Chris Martin, the two skipped an elaborate wedding for an elopement in 2003 before “consciously uncoupling” in 2014. With that in mind, it would make sense why Paltrow couldn’t stop gushing about wedding planning to PeopleStyle in January. “I’m excited about everything! I’ve never had a wedding before. So even though I’m 45, I sort of feel like a 21-yearold,” she said at the time.

Passenger died in Micronesia crash A passenger’s body has been found in the Pacific lagoon where a plane crash-landed last week near an island runway in Micronesia. Air Niugini had initially said all 47 passengers and crew had survived when the Boeing 737 crashed near the Chuuk island runway on Friday. The Papua New Guinea national carrier said on Saturday one passenger had not been accounted for but was witnessed reaching a rescue dinghy as US Navy sailors and lo-

cals helped people escape the sinking plane. But Air Niugini chief executive Tahawar Durrani said the man’s body was found by divers Monday. The airline said in a statement yesterday the man was Indonesian, but did not reveal his identity. “Our outreach team is in touch with the man’s family and we are making arrangements to repatriate his body,” Durrani said in a statement. Four passengers were in stable conditions at a Chuuk is-

land hospital and will be taken soon to Guam for further treatment, Air Niugini said. Hospital and aviation officials have not responded to requests for comment. Flight PX73 from nearby Pohnpei island crashed about 145 metres from the Chuuk International Airport runway, the airline said. What caused the crash remains unclear. The airline and US Navy said the plane landed in the lagoon short of the runway. Some witnesses thought

the plane overshot the runway. A Papua New Guinea accident investigation team flew to Micronesia on Friday, the Post Courier newspaper reported. Flight PX73 flies from Tokyo’s Narita International Airport to Papua New Guinea’s capital, Port Moresby, via Pohnpei and Chuuk. Air Niugini has operated since 1973. Data from the Aviation Safety Network indicate the Indonesian passenger is Air Niugini’s first fatality in two decades. – AP

Summons for Cardi B US rapper Cardi B has been given a summons for reckless endangerment and assault in connection with a melee at a New York strip club. The platinumselling artist was charged after meeting investigators at a police station. Police say Cardi B and her entourage were at the club at when she got into an argument with a woman who was bartending. They say a fight broke out during which chairs, bottles and hookah water pipes were thrown, slightly injuring the bartender and another employee. Police said the rapper and other people in her party fled, but she later agreed to turn herself in after being identified by the bartender. – AP

Edwards said in his case note promoted to social media yesterday, “The need to investigate possible incidents and accidents needed to be balanced with the delivery agent’s right to maintain a reasonable degree of privacy and dignity, and that of the people with whom they interact as they make their round. “The delivery agents spend a considerable amount of time in the Paxster vehicles and it would be unsettling for them, and unreasonable intrusive, to record audio during the entire time a Paxster is being driven.” An overhaul of the Privacy Act is currently making its way through Parliament. The legislation includes many of the Privacy Commissioner’s

recommendations, such as compulsory data breach disclosure, but not his suggestion to ramp up fines to $1m for companies that breach the Act, and $100,000 for individuals. As things stand, a $10,000 fine will be the maximum, and the bad publicity generated by his case notes Edwards’ main weapon. Another issue is that fines in the Privacy Bill are currently restricted to a narrow range of offences and likely would not have covered the Paxster incident, had NZ Post refused to co-operate, a spokesman for Edwards’ office says. Edwards is angling for financial penalties to apply to a broader range of violations. The Privacy Commissioner made two oral submissions and one written submission to the select committee considering the bill. Privacy Act ‘violated’ NZ Post has agreed to stop what posties slammed as “secret eavesdropping” of workers using its electric delivery vehicles. Controversy arose in August after the Postal Workers Union discovered the new Paxter vehicles record everything a postie says. Union spokesman John Maynard said that while it was obvious there were cameras on the Paxsters, most employees were oblivious that NZ Post was making “continuous audio recordings while they are out driving” – including private phone calls and conversations with passersby. Maynard labelled it “secret eavesdropping”. Privacy Commissioner John Edwards took up the case, and said in a social media post yesterday that NZ Post had agreed to stop audio recordings. The state-owned enterprise, which earlier suspended recordings while the Commissioner’s investigation took place, told Edwards audio was recorded for safety reasons. Edwards said it was not clear how audio recordings would help prevent crashes. He also found NZ Post had breached Principle 3 of the Privacy Act, “as the delivery agent was not made aware of the fact that cameras were recording audio during his delivery round.” (Employees also have to be made aware of any video cameras or video recording.) New Zealand trusts business Perpetual Guardian has signed off on the four-day week, turning an experiment into company policy. Perpetual Guardian founder Andrew Barnes first introduced the reduced workweek in March to see what impact, if any, it would have on productivity levels at the business. This initial test was a success, with independent academic research showing productivity levels remaining intact and job satisfaction improving markedly among staff members. As was the case with the trial, employees who opt into the fourday week will be eligible for a weekly rest day provided they meet their weekly productivity objectives and will be paid their usual salary. While the new policy comes into effect on November 1, getting it over the line wasn’t quite as easy as sending out an all-staff email. Perpetual Guardian sought

hicken breasts are one of the most versatile meats you can have in the freezer. They’re great diced, sliced, skewered, stir-fried, stuffed or roasted whole. Chicken with couscous and lemon Olive oil 3 chicken breasts, trimmed of fat 1 1/2 C chicken stock 1 1/2 C couscous 1 can sweetcorn kernels 1 lemon, rind and juice 3T olive oil 1/2 C sun-dried tomatoes, chopped 3T fresh mint, chopped 2T fresh parsley, chopped 1/4 C roasted almonds, chopped

Easy mushroom baked chicken 6 chicken breasts, with skin on 300g tinned cream of mushroom soup 1 (220g) tin chopped mushrooms, with liquid 250g sour cream 120ml sherry 1T paprika ■ Preheat oven to 180°C. in Fabric breasts skin-side ■ Place chicken up in a large baking dish. ■ In a medium bowl, combine soup, mushrooms with liquid, sour cream and sherry. ■ Mix well and pour mixture over chicken. ■ Sprinkle with paprika. ■ Bake for about 1 1/4 hours, or until chicken is cooked through and tender, and juices run clear.

Hint:

Just like steak, let your chicken breast rest for at least five minutes before chomping into it or all the juice you made such an effort to keep in the meat will run straight out, leaving you with a rubbery mess.

Mediterranean baked chicken 3 medium roasting potatoes, cut in pieces 2T oil 4 chicken breasts 2 red peppers, diced 1/2 C green olives 125ml white wine 1 chicken stock pot or cube 2T thyme leaves ■ Heat the oven to 180°C. ■ Put the potato pieces in a saucepan and cover with cold water. ■ Bring to the boil and boil for 5 minutes then drain well. ■ Heat 1T of the oil in a frying pan and brown the chicken breasts. ■ Place the chicken in a roasting dish with the potatoes, capsicum and olives. ■ In a saucepan heat together the wine with the stock pot or cube until dissolved. ■ Pour this over the chicken. ■ Scatter over the thyme and season with pepper. ■ Drizzle over the remaining olive oil. ■ Bake for 30-35 minutes until the chicken and potatoes are cooked through.

■ Preheat oven to 190°C. ■ Heat oil in a frying pan. ■ Season chicken with salt and pepper and brown on both sides. ■ Place chicken in an oven dish and cook for 20 minutes or until cooked through. ■ Meanwhile, put stock in a saucepan and bring to the boil. ■ Place couscous in a large bowl, pour over hot stock and stir briefly to combine. ■ Cover bowl and leave couscous to steam and soften for 5 minutes. ■ Cook corn kernels in boiling, salted water for 3 minutes and drain. ■ Fluff couscous with a fork. ■ Stir through hot sliced chicken, sweetcorn kernels and remaining ingredients. ■ Season well with salt and pepper and serve immediately sprinkled with chopped almonds.

Spinach and ricotta stuffed chicken

Roast balsamic chicken and zingy sauce

125g baby spinach 200g fresh ricotta 1/2 C (40g) grated parmesan 1 clove garlic, crushed 4 x 180g chicken breast fillets 2T plain flour 2T olive oil 250ml chicken stock 1/4 C chopped flat-leaf parsley ■ Place spinach in a large heatproof bowl. ■ Cover with boiling water. Stand for 1-2 minutes, until wilted. ■ Drain and refresh under cold water. ■ Drain again, pressing out water. Roughly chop and place in a bowl. ■ Add ricotta, parmesan and garlic to bowl. ■ Season and stir to combine. ■ Cut a pocket in thick side of each chicken fillet. ■ Fill with spinach mixture. ■ Dust chicken pieces with flour, shaking off any excess. ■ Heat oil in a large frying pan on medium. ■ Cook chicken for 5 minutes each side, until browned. ■ Add stock to pan. ■ Reduce heat to low, cover and simmer for 8-10 minutes. ■ Stir in parsley and season. ■ Serve with vegetables.

Simmer for 10 minutes, or until reduced. ■ Add ginger. Remove from heat and discard mint.

Add the finely chopped mushrooms and cook, stirring regularly until all the water from the mushrooms has evaporated. Stir through the chopped herbs and season with pepper. Set aside to cool. ■ Pastry: Spread the dijon mustard evenly over browned beef. Place a piece of plastic wrap on the bench top and lay spinach leaves evenly over the plastic wrap. ■ Then spread the mushroom mixture evenly over the spinach. Place the beef in the middle and using the plastic wrap to help you, roll up tightly. Place in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes. ■ On a lightly-floured bench top, roll out the pastry large enough to fit around the meat. ■ Brush egg wash over the edges, remove plastic wrap from the beef and place beef in the mid-

dle of the pastry. Cut out 4 corners from the pastry (this will be excess pastry once you fold), but being careful not to cut away too much, then fold the pastry over to completely enclose the beef, and turn over. ■ Line a shallow roasting dish with some oil spray and place in the beef wellington. Brush pastry well with egg wash. Score the top of the pastry with a small sharp knife, then place in the refrigerator for 5 minutes to set the pastry. ■ Remove from the refrigerator, brush once more with egg wash and sprinkle with a little flaky salt. Place in the oven and cook for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and rest for 10 minutes before slicing. ■ To serve: Serve with steamed green vegetables and gravy. Hafeez recalled Pakistan have summoned allrounder Mohammad Hafeez for the two-test series against Australia in the UAE. Hafeez is the fourth opener in the squad besides regular Test opener Azhar Ali, Imam-ul-Haq, and the uncapped Fakhar Zaman. The 37-year-old Hafeez has played 50 tests, but none since 2016 in England. He has 3452 test runs at an average of 39.22, and has taken 52 wickets with his offspin bowling. - AP

Lanelle McArthur’s secondary school shooting days have come to a successful end. McArthur and team-mates Emma Smith and Shania Harrison-Lee headed to Rangiora at the weekend to compete in the New Zealand secondary schools’ target shooting match and could not have wished for a better outcome. The Coronation Target Shooting Club trio defended the title they won the year before at the shoulder-to-shoulder match, topping the leaderboard with a score of 877.42 ahead of second placed Fielding High School on 873.27 and third placed Palmerston North Boys’ High School on 860.22. The school shoot opened the big weekend of shooting, with each team member shooting three cards, and as well as those three cards each being enough to secure Ashburton College the title. Harrison-Lee’s individual effort was also the day’s best which saw her named the captain of the South Island team for a shoot against the North. All three Ashburton College students shot in the match against the North Island, which was won by the South, and McArthur was the top shot in that which resulted in her being named the captain of the New Zealand team for a postal shoot against Great Britain on Sunday. That New Zealand team featured all three Ashburton girls again and the results of that shoot are not yet known. McArthur was also the shoot’s overall top woman, with her total score of 492 a record for the top girl trophy at the competition. For McArthur, a Year 13 student, it was the last time she will shoot for Ashburton College, while Harrison-Lee and Smith are year 11 students this year meaning that – along with a new team member – they’d be able to take aim at a hat-trick in the national match next year. Despite being defending champions heading into this year’s event, McArthur said there were no nerves. As a shooter, you couldn’t afford to get nervous. “It’s a very mental sport and if you have too much on your mind or you’re stressed or nervous you’re going to shake and you’re not going to do well,” McArthur said. All three Ashburton shooters are no strangers to top competition either. Just last month they combined to win the New Zealand secondary schools’ championships postal shoot. For that they had to send away for rounds of targets which took them out the team title, while Harrison-Lee was the top overall individual and won the B grade championship, in which Smith was third. McArthur was the master grade champion in that shoot and third overall.

Marshes plunder runs The Marsh brothers have logged some valuable batting practice ahead of the two-test series with Pakistan in Dubai as Australia’s only warm-up match looks headed for a draw. Australia’s specialist batsmen continued to accumulate against a limited Pakistan A attack and reached stumps at 4-494. Shaun and Mitchell Marsh moved carefully towards significant milestones while overhauling Pakistan A’s first innings 278. Mitchell Marsh eventually top scored with 162. - AAP

Patrick Reed has laid into USA captain Jim Furyk and Jordan Spieth after their Ryder Cup defeat in Paris. Reed endured a difficult time at Le Golf National, losing in both fourballs alongside Tiger Woods, while sitting out both foursomes. Reed was benched for Friday’s afternoon session which swung the tie decisively in Team Europe’s favour, as they took all four points available in the session. He was left out on the Saturday afternoon too, and there was likely a hint of frustration enveloped in his self-mocking cel-

ebration after winning his deadrubber of a singles clash against Tyrrell Hatton on Sunday, when putting his finger to his lips. Loftus ‘no fortress’ By Patrick Mckendry The Springboks will be facing the weight of history as well as the All Blacks when they run on to Loftus Versfeld on Sunday morning NZT. The famous old ground in Pretoria, which sits 1350m above sea level, is not the field of dreams or fortress the South Africans would like it to be – especially as far as the All Blacks are concerned. They have played New Zealand five times at Loftus, but won only once (in 1970), which represents an appalling success rate of only 20 per cent. Ellis Park in Johannesburg, which is only 70km away from Pretoria, is by far the Boks’ most successful venue against the All Blacks. The home side have won nine of their 14 tests there against the old foe, the last time in 2014 when Pat Lambie kicked a penalty goal with two minutes remaining for a 27-25 victory after the Boks led 21-13 at halftime. Supporters of the Springboks will be hoping altitude plays a part in denting the All Blacks performance; especially in the second half.

But given the frequency of trips to and from the Republic during the Super Rugby season, all the All Blacks have become used to the travel and playing high above sea level. A plus for the Boks, perhaps, is that before last month they had never before beaten the All Blacks at Wellington’s Westpac Stadium. The did it with an inspired defence and an attack which made the most of every opportunity; something they couldn’t do the test before against the Pumas in Argentina. It was the first time the All Blacks had lost to the Boks at home since 2009 when they were beaten at Waikato Stadium. Great expectations With the Rugby Championship wrapped up for another year maybe there’s less pressure ahead of Sunday’s test in Pretoria? That’s not how being the All Blacks works says coach Steve Hansen upon arrival to South Africa. “The life of the All Blacks doesn’t look like that. It’s not about anything other than having to win,” Hansen said. “The expectations are that we win every test match and if we win them we win them well. Nothing will change for us. We’ve got to appear well and make sure we hit the track Saturday in a frame of mind that allows us to present ourselves the best we can.” - NZME

Loftus Versfeld is not a happy hunting ground for the Boks.

Lawrence Dallaglio believes the English RFU should take a leaf out of New Zealand Rugby’s book and explore the idea of offering England’s top players sabbaticals. Former England skipper Dallaglio raised the point in his column for The Times this week when analysing the surprise international retirement of England prop Joe Marler, a year out from the World Cup in Japan. Dallaglio said New Zealand seemed to be ahead of most of the rugby world after highlighting that Marler quitting England “brought into perspective again the issue of player welfare”. - NZME

Putting the heart in Heartland I f there’s one Heartland Championship rugby game I always look forward to, it’s when Mid Canterbury host Ngati Porou East Coast. It’s one that, most years, you can probably put a bit of money on a Mid Canterbury win and be fairly certain that you’re going to get a return. But, the fact that it’s likely to result in a win for our Mid Canterbury boys is not what makes it a highlight on the rugby calendar for me. It’s more the fact that East Coast, despite being the competition’s wooden-spooners more often than not, is arguably the team in the competition with the biggest heart. I’ve never had the pleasure of watching a game on the side’s home turf up in Ruatoria, but I’ve caught a few games on Mainfreight Rugby and there’s always something that brings a smile to the face, like a random horse on the sideline. That’s not something you’d generally see at the Ashburton Showgrounds on your average game day, but at an East Coast

home game, it’s not unusual. East Coast is a team renowned for being full of fight and determination. Even in a game like the one three weeks ago where South Canterbury racked up 100 points against the light blues, the players never gave up. The side’s supporters are behind their team 100 per cent, no matter what, too. Talking to ex-Mid Cantabrian Adaam Ross – who now lives in Whangarei and is a loan player in this year’s East Coast side – ahead of Mid Canterbury’s win over East Coast on Saturday, he said that so long as players gave it their all during a game they were sure to be shouted a beer after the game no matter what the scoreboard read. It’s all part of what makes East Coast a team that you can’t help but love. One of a couple of Heartland sides that has a haka, the passion the players have for the game and for the union is clear before a game even kicks off. But off the field they’re a pretty laid-back bunch. With players spread all over

A week after the thrashing at the hands of South Canterbury the light blues lost to Poverty Bay, but the home side led at half time, prompting the East Coast union’s president – who was commentating a livestream of the match – to put a call-out for someone to take over from him for the second half so he could go and join the festivities. well – they’re a passionate lot. It’s often said that Mid Canterbury punches above its weight in the Heartland Championship. A union with just five senior teams to choose the bulk of a squad from, Mid Canterbury has generally been there or thereabouts in recent years. East Coast is up against it, too, and unfortunately it usually tells on the leaderboard. The union is the smallest in New Zealand in the sense of player numbers and population base. In 2011 East Coast finished Meads Cup runners-up to Wanganui, and in 2012 turned the tables on Wanganui to claim the title. But that has been the extent of East Coast’s success in the Heartland Championship, with their other finishes reading 10th, 11th or 12th, while Mid Canterbury’s has never finished outside of the top eight. And Hammers fans are hoping that tradition will continue. With two rounds to go in this year’s competition, Mid Canterbury is seventh, with Buller and King Country yet to play.

Having a go on the croquet courts Prospective new croquet players made the most of an opportunity offered to them by the Waireka Croquet Club to give the sport a shot on Sunday. The club held its annual have-a-go day and a number of people turned up to learn more about the game and have a go with a helping hand from club members. Among those giving the sport a crack was Sue Robinson (right) under the watchful eye of Waireka’s Pauline Scott.

Promising 3YO to debut

Jip Jip Rock makes her debut at Ruakaka today.

Byerley Park trainers Peter and Dawn Williams will have three horses at Ruakaka today in the hope of recording their maiden victories. Promising three-year-old debutant Jip Jip Rock has pleased her trainers with her three trials to date and she could be on a Gr.1 Gavelhouse.com 46th NZ 1000 Guineas path if she performs well in today’s Lion Red 1200. “We’re very happy with her heading into tomorrow, but she’s drawn a bit wide (barrier 10),” Peter Williams said. “She had a first and a second in her trials (this preparation) and trialed up really well, we’re more than happy with her. “It’s a long way off yet (the 1000 Guineas), so we’ll find out after tomorrow what her spring plans will be.

“We’ll get the maiden race out of the way and then we can work something out. “I really like her a lot, she’s a lovely filly.” The stable’s other three-yearold debutant Friday Wolfe may yet be withdrawn from the Whangarei Racing Club Membership (1200m), with her trainers wanting more forgiving ground for the filly. “She might not run yet, we’ll just play it by ear,” Williams said. “The track might be too hard for her.” Meanwhile, four-year-old mare Below Zero will be aiming to breakthrough for her maiden victory. The daughter of Postponed has been in consistent form since her debut late last year, having never finished further back than fourth in her five career starts. - NZME

Townsend Seeds International Ltd. is a locally owned seed production company based in Lincoln, with a production office in Rakaia.

We are looking for a talented reporter to join our news team.

Our focus is producing seeds for the International markets where we have a strong foothold and are well recognised for our expertise in producing high quality hybrid vegetable crops along with OP vegetables, clovers, grasses and garden peas.

With no distinct limitations on age or experience, we are more looking for someone with a real drive to push our multimedia platforms with news, videos and images, someone who has passion, enthusiasm, energy and a desire to tell a story.

We have expanded the business substantially in recent years, but now find we are constrained by too small a footprint within the seed producing grower community. We therefore require the services of an experienced, well respected Field Representative/Agronomist who has a proven track record in dealing with growers and producing high quality seed crops. The successful applicant will have a portfolio of proven competent seed growers and a sound agronomic knowledge of growing seed crops to their maximum potential. The position will come with a generous remuneration package along with a Company vehicle and other add-ons – laptop, mobile phone etc

All the work you perform will be done while promoting and practising positive health and safety.

Opportunities for advancement within the company will be available if the successful applicant proves to be a ‘winner’ in his/her role as a field person.

Ideally you will have the following attributes: • Class 1 – 3 drivers’ licences, additional licences would be an advantage • Physically fit and motivated • Reliable and punctual • A team player and good communication skills

The event attracted almost 30 entries and by the end of the five runs it was Byron Kelsall in his Subaru WRX who came out on top, with his final run of the day proving to be his fastest, coming home in 1.54.68 minutes.
