Two young males are facing serious consequences after stealing fuel and leading police on a chase across Canterbury yesterday. After driving off from a petrol station in Waimate without paying at around 10.40am, the individuals were eventually brought to a halt on the Methven Highway shortly after midday. It took two separate police pursuits and some road spikes, laid just north of the Ashburton River Bridge, to stop their vehicle.

A police spokesperson said the vehicle failed to stop when signalled near the petrol station and a pursuit was initiated. Due to the driver’s manner of driving the pursuit had to be abandoned in Temuka, but police continued to monitor the vehicle from a distance. The vehicle was later picked up by police further north where a second police pursuit began. Senior Sergeant Phil Dean said the driver led police on a chase through rural roads, before entering Ashburton just after midday. In Tinwald, residents reported wit-

nessing dramatic scenes as “eight or nine” police cars chased after the vehicle, which then ran over the road spikes. It continued up Alford Forest Road with smoking wheels and the individuals were eventually stopped roughly a kilometre out of Ashburton on the Methven Highway, 20 minutes after the second pursuit began. One individual has been referred to youth aid and the other, a 17-year-old, has been charged with theft, driving in a dangerous manner and failing to stop. He is expected to appear in Ashburton District Court next Wednesday.

Winter sports skills put to test in tournament By Katie todd

Hundreds of students from 20 schools descended on venues across Ashburton for the eagerly awaited Mid Canterbury Winter Sports Tournament yesterday. Twenty schools partook in the annual, actionpacked event, which saw Year 5-8 teams facing off at netball, rugby, hockey and football at five different locations around town. Primary Sports Co-ordinator Brooke Morshuis said some schools had entered their existing teams, while other schools had used the day as an opportunity to form new teams and give students the opportunity to have a go. Other “combined” teams saw students from smaller schools playing alongside one another, including Longbeach and Hinds. The event was organised by the Mid Canterbury Primary Sports Association but could not have happened without the help of dozens of parent volunteers, Morshuis said. The top teams will proceed to the Canterbury Winter Tournament, which will be held in Christchurch on August 24.

Firefighters off on US rescue bid By Katie todd

Last week, John Ferguson had no idea he’d be packing his bags and putting his life on hold for 42 days. But when the opportunity came knocking to help battle wildfires in California, he wasn’t going to decline. Ferguson, a volunteer for Ashburton Rural Fire Force, flew out from New Zealand last evening alongside Mark Shears, a volunteer for Lauriston Rural Fire Force and Kevin Donaldson, who is the Timaru Senior Station Officer, based in Ashburton. The three Mid Cantabrians are among a contingent of 146 firefighters and fire managers from

across Australia and New Zealand sent to help their American counterparts. A further three Ashburton District volunteer firefighters – Tim Rowe, Dean Carr and Tim Clark – have put their hands up to help fight fires raging across the state of Ontario, Canada, and will be setting off early next week. For Ferguson, going to California was simply “the chance of a lifetime to offer help where it’s needed”. He has never helped at an overseas fire before and with little knowledge of exactly where he will be deployed, said he is not sure what to expect. More than 15 deadly wildfires

are currently ripping through the state. At least eight people, including firefighters and civilians, have been killed by the blazes and more than 1000 homes and businesses have been destroyed. Throughout the 42 days, firefighters could be working for up to 14 consecutive days without rest, Ferguson said. “It’s a long time to be away and that was one of the things when I was weighing up the decision … but it will be a real experience,” he said. The biggest of the fires, the Carr Fire, has been burning for around 11 days now, scorching around 470 square kilometres and displacing 38,000 residents.

Officials said tornado-like winds have whipped up the Carr Fire in unpredictable ways. The New Zealand firefighters met in Auckland for a briefing yesterday afternoon before flying to Los Angeles. From there they will travel to Boise, Idaho, where they will have a one-day orientation before being deployed. Australia and New Zealand are also sending heavy equipment and helicopter managers, helicopter crew members and structure protection specialists to help with the wildfires. Meanwhile, New Zealand has also received a formal request from Canada to assist with the growing number of wildfires in

Ontario, British Columbia and the Yukon Territory. There are currently 41 active fires in the areas and yesterday 13 were yet to be brought under control. The three Mid Canterbury volunteers are yet to find out exactly when they will be leaving. A spokesperson for Fire and Emergency New Zealand said details of what assistance is required are being worked through. Since 2000 firefighters from New Zealand have participated in 20 overseas deployments – six to the United States, three to Canada and 11 to Australia. A total of 784 people have been involved.

After several months in the hands of a receiver, the Hotel Ashburton has a new owner, Johny and Jaswinder Singh will take over the reins of the Ashburton Trust’s flagship business on September 1 and bring with them a strong hospitality background as owners of hotels in Cambridge and Feilding. Johny Singh was in Ashburton on Wednesday and shared his enthusiasm for the hotel business with staff. Singh moved to New Zealand from India 10 years ago and quickly established himself in the hospitality business, buying his first hotel in Cambridge. For him, hospitality was a natural fit with his strong work ethic, but becoming a hotel owner was a big learning curve, he said. This was followed by the purchase of a second hotel, one that involved both renovation of the property and a rebuilding of the business. When the Hotel Ashburton came on the market, Singh was quick to respond and said he had been working with the business’ receivers for some time to sign a deal. His background as owner of two hotels in provincial locations meant he had a good understanding of rural communities, he said. He’s looking forward to being part of the hotel team and

early days as owner much easier, Singh said. “And we’ll try to keep all of those key staff and then hire as we need.” The Singhs and their daughters Avnoor, 3 and Evonne, six

Trust board chair Fay Watson said the board was impressed with the skill and enthusiasm Singh brought as the hotel’s new owner. “He has an extremely strong work ethic, boundless enthusiasm and energy to get in there and build the business; he has the business head needed to ensure he manages the day-to-day operations as well as the financials and back office that’s necessary for a business of this size and complexity,” she said. As part of the change of business strategy that saw the trust sell its hospitality business and become a property owner, the trust initially sold the Hotel Ashburton to a Christchurch based family with hospitality interests. The business went into receivership in January and has been run by the receivers since then with the objective of achieving a sale as a going concern. Watson said the trust had been committed to keeping the hotel running while a new owner was found. “At no time were the doors locked; trading continued and the community was not affected.” From September 1 the receiver will conclude his role. The sale includes 54 accommodation rooms, the restaurant and bar, function centre and eight function rooms and the Turf sports bar.

The Ashburton District’s new international relations strategy has been given the seal of approval by mayor Donna Favel. The strategy sees the council enter new territory in having a stronger focus on relationships with other countries and replaces its earlier sister city relationship arrangements.

Earlier this year Favel pushed for the development of the strategy to define the priorities and guidelines for international partnerships and activities. Without such a strategy, relationships would be ad hoc she suggested as previously relationships had been largely historic and ceremonial in nature with little strategic content. In brief Manhunt ongoing New Plymouth police are hunting multiple offenders involved in the shooting of a man at Taranaki Base Hospital on Wednesday night. The 43-year-old victim was shot around 9.30pm and has since undergone surgery and is recovering from his injuries. Emergency services were first called to the car park off Tukapa St last night after gunfire was heard. Police said the victim first arrived at the hospital’s car park alone in a plain white Toyota Hiace van, and are seeking previous sightings of the van. “We are also seeking sightings of two other vehicles in the vicinity at the time,” Detective Senior Sergeant Brent Matuku said. Since being crowned the Agrikids National Champions in Invercargill last month, Tim Connelly-Whyte, Austin Watson and Henry Gray have been relaxing and revelling in the glory. But yesterday one challenge remained for the AIS Fencers – to prove themselves against

their teachers at Ashburton Intermediate. The school held a mini competition where a team of three staff attempted – but failed – to do better than the AIS Fencers. Contestants had to complete a number of challenges not dissimilar to those faced by the boys in the finals – including assembling wheelbarrows, com-

pleting a quiz and changing two tyres on a quad bike. Principal Brent Gray said Honda had kindly jumped on board and provided bikes, while The Tool Shed had offered the use of their wheelbarrows. A number of other sponsors had helped the trio to hone their skills and get down to Invercargill and back – complete

with custom competition uniforms. Yesterday, the AIS Fencers not only completed the tasks faster than the staff team, but scored higher. The teachers were awarded 248 points for how well they had completed the challenges, while the AIS Fencers scored 323.

Tinwald’s Plains Museum and village is growing but that means the costs of running the complex are rising. And to help balance its books, the Tinwald Plains Museum Trust has asked the Ashburton District Council to give it a financial helping hand. The trust made a plea for help

as a submission to the council’s long-term plan but this submission was omitted from the debating list. At last week’s finance and business service committee councillors belatedly considered a request for help over four areas of the trust’s operation. As well as increased costs in running the village, there were now extra compliance costs,

Plains Railway chairman Darryl Nelson said. “We have to follow exactly the same rules as KiwiRail,” he said. Councillors agreed to a request for council to mow the public areas in the village, to provide consumables for toilets located in the railway station and to establish a rubbish and recycling facility. The costs of all of these can be met within the council’s

existing budget. However, when it came to funding the Plains silver status membership with Experience Mid Canterbury, it was a step too t councillors. far for Doing so would have set a precedent for other organisations to make the same request, they decided. The membership costs $800 a year.

Graffiti removal on the Auckland rail network has “largely ceased” after an Auckland Transport decision to axe its graffiti clean-up contracts. The Auckland Council business unit has cancelled its graffiti contracts with the Manukau Beautification Trust and Civic Contractors from July 1 and says it is “looking at ways of getting better value for ratepayer and taxpayer money”. Public Transport Users Association co-ordinator Jon Reeves said commuters had noticed “a dramatic increase in graffiti across the Auckland network” in the past eight weeks. “It’s starting to look actually pretty bad,” he said. “Word gets around between the low-lifes that no one is monitoring it.” - NZME

Injuries ‘deliberate’ Deliberately inflicted head injuries were the cause of death of an 18-month-old South Waikato girl, police say. Police launched a homicide investigation after Comfort Joy Witeri-Thompson died late on Tuesday night at Waikato Hospital and a postmortem is under way. Detective Senior Sergeant Matt Cranshaw, Taupo Area police said they believed Comfort died “as a result of head injuries police believe were deliberately inflicted”. “The inquiry team seeks the continued co-operation of family and close associates in bringing those responsible to account.” - NZME

Years after the first earthquake damaged building was demolished, the final demolitions – bar one – were completed on Ashburton’s Eastfields site. Three buildings fronting Burnett Street, formerly home to a computer business, a chocolate manufacturer and a discount outlet have been standing empty for many months. completed salvage operations in recent weeks and on Wednesday night the buildings were demolished. The job took just three hours, but the clean-up is likely to take several days. The only building still to be demolished on the site is that formerly home to Bruce Printing Ltd. For Eastfield company chairman Brian Davidson, the demolition of the three buildings was critical for the planned development of an inner town hotel on the site.

Planning for the hotel is on target, with a resource consent issued. Davidson said the site clearance was critical as the new build would cover part of the site where the three demolished buildings stood. The first official peg has been driven into the ground ahead of the construction of Ashburton’s new inner town hotel. A concept plan for the new hotel has been prepared, but architectural and building plans are still to be completed for the project that

is likely to have a completion cost of $40 million. The 75-room, four star hotel will front Burnett Street and will be the anchor project in the Eastfield development that will include hospitality and retail businesses as well as a large, central green space that will be accessible from several laneways. The hotel will include a first floor events centre able to cater to groups of up to 200 people. This will be accessed by a central staircase that overlooks the cen-

tral piazza. A dining laneway will provide a sheltered connection between the restaurant, café and bar and the development’s public spaces. The central piazza will provide a sunny, sheltered, central focus for retail and food businesses as well as the hotel. It will also provide an open civic space that can be used casually or for events. Eastfield is a co-operative development involving several landowners including the Ashburton District Council.

A trust that was set up to manage a pavilion in the Ashburton Domain oval is about to be wound up and its debts written off. The trust has effectively been

non-operational for several years and the Ashburton District Council has decided it is time to put it out of business. At a finance and business support committee meeting last week, district councillors agreed that the

maintenance and management of the pavilion should become the council’s responsibility. The pavilion’s two main users, the Mid Canterbury Cricket Association and the Mid Canterbury Athletics Association are keen to

continue using the facility. The trust has $16,204 in the bank and this will pass directly to the council. It also has a debt of $23,100 in electricity costs and this will be written off by the council.

An application will then be made to the High Court to wind up the pavilion trust. The council will then change the locks on the building, carry out maintenance and establish a payment schedule for its use.

Minister slams Insurance Council Greater Christchurch Regeneration Minister Megan Woods has hit back at the Insurance Council over its criticism of a new tribunal being set up to hasten claims still outstanding after the 2010 and 2011 Canterbury earthquakes. “It’s a bit galling to hear the Insurance Council talking about tardiness when there’s still thousands of people with unsettled claims in Canterbury. This Government promised to do something for the people of Canterbury and we’re delivering on that,” Woods told the Herald. “In nine months not only have we appropriated the money, we’ve done the policy work and we’ve drafted and tabled the legislation to establish an alternative way to get these claims settled. “In nine months we’ve done more than the previous government did in seven years,” she said. The Insurance Council slammed the Government over the tribunal, which will be established under a bill introduced to Parliament yesterday by Justice Minister Andrew Little. Little said the tribunal would enable homeowners to resolve longstanding residential in-

The Insurance Council said it had taken far too long for action to be taken. “The tribunal won’t be up and

still receiving, on average, two claims a day from EQC,” Insurance Council chief executive Tim Grafton said. The Insurance Council was also concerned that only policyholders would be able to bring cases, not insurers. “This is unfair as it only deals with one half of the problem and the Ministry of Justice agrees, saying it creates inequity of access to justice. “A tribunal that allowed both sides to bring claims would be fair and balanced and truly working towards the goal of helping everyone find resolutions and move forward from the quakes,” Grafton said. The Government’s own agencies, EQC and Southern Response, accounted for the majority of outstanding claims but neither they nor private insurers were consulted on the bill before its introduction, he said. The council also said it wanted certainty that the tribunal would respect the rules of natural justice and fair procedure, the need to apply the rules of evidence, to be bound by precedent, and the ability to appeal significant points of

law. “Any bill that does not respect these legal principles will not be supported by the insurance sector,” Grafton said. “The people of Canterbury deserve better than a tardy process that fails the test for best practice policy development.” Woods said the time for consultation was during the select committee process and the Insurance Council have a chance to voice its opinions then. “The bill has been tabled, it will have its first reading and it will go through that process. I’m left wondering why the Insurance Council thinks they deserve special treatment,” she said. Woods said the tribunal would level the playing field. “This is about giving people who have not had a way to get their claims settled. They haven’t been able to afford to go through the courts. It’s about giving claimants an alternative way through the system. The insurance industry can well afford to use the courts if that’s what they need and there are other tribunals that are only claimant initiated,” she said. - NZME

Woman calls police on son after finding stolen items Police are praising the actions of a Christchurch mother who called the police on her teenage son. Last month, media reported that teens in Broomfield, Hei Hei, Hornby and Wigram were “door stepping” homes in the neighbourhood and stealing items left outside. This week, one mother called police after she found some items that didn’t belong to her 14-year-old. He refused to tell her where he got them, so she contacted police. Senior Constable Bruce Ward says when they picked up the bike, scooter and shoes they realised they had been stolen from properties in Wigram and Hornby. “They’d go from house to house and have a look at what had been left out during the night on the doorsteps, and they’d taken what they wanted. Police believe they probably stole some of these items.” The teenager will now be charged with burglary. Police believe between eight and ten teenagers are involved, and are urging

residents to report any items missing from their homes. Ward says police have items they believe are stolen but they need the owners to come forward before more charges can be laid. “I suspect what’s happened is that maybe young people have come out and found their shoes are not there or their scooter’s gone, and their parents have said ‘I’ve told you not to leave it lying around, it’s your own fault’, and they haven’t contacted police.” He also warns people to lock up their possessions and not leave anything out overnight. “People have got to be very wary of where they leave items ... we believe this is probably a night-time event. And if they have got something missing, contact police and let us know.” Ward also says if teenagers come home with items that don’t belong to them, parents should take it off them and call police. - NZME

Ruapehu Alpine Lifts (RAL) Ltd has voluntarily suspended its bus fleet after an urgent audit carried out by the NZ Transport Agency. The company says it was now outsourcing its own transport to continue to ferry skiers up the mountain. The company’s fleet was subjected to assessment after one of its buses crashed with 31 passengers on board, killing one and injuring 18. Selfie surgeons sacked A team of surgical staff have been suspended for taking selfies mid-operation and posting them on social media. The group of medical professionals, including the surgeon, anaesthesiologist, two surgical assistants and a surgical nurse work at the Hospital San Jose de Capilla del Senor, in the district of Exaltacion de la Cruz in the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires. The images were taken during an operation and posted on the social media account of one of the surgeons, Lorena Olguin, who works in the gastroenterology area of the hospital. The photos show the medical team looking at the camera with their surgical masks and gowns on. One of them shows three of them standing over the patient lying on the operating table, and another with the whole team showing the equipment used in the surgery and bits of gauze with blood on it. The hospital authorities say they have suspended all of those shown in the photo because they consider it irresponsible behaviour. The image was deleted from social media by Olguin, who told local media that she did not take it, but just shared it on her social media page. She said: “I have been really affected by all of this. “I would like to publicly apologise to the people of Capilla for having visually offended them with these images, it was not the intention of any of us that all this should happen. “That day there were several surgeries, random photos were taken, there was talk of selfies, at no time did I pick up my mobile phone. I was operating, they said ‘photo’, I looked at the camera instinctively, later

Doubts raised over Russian ‘treasure ship’ Police have placed a travel ban on executives of a South Korean company that claimed to have discovered a sunken Russian warship after suspicions were raised about the veracity of claims it was laden with £100 billion ($193b) in gold. Investors clambered to sink funds into the Shinil Group last month after it announced the extraordinary discovery of the Dmitrii Donskoi’s carcass, which it was claimed held a record haul of bullion and gold coins from the Russo-Japanese War. But now police and prosecutors say they want to speak with Choi Yong Seok, the CEO of Shinil Group, and a number

of senior members of the conglomerate. They have fallen under a travel ban while an investigation is carried out over allegations in local media that the discovery was a racket to attract capital. Police are also trying to locate Yu Ji Beom, the head of an affiliated group based in Singapore who set up a cryptocurrency called Donskoi International Exchange, named after the Russian warship, and promoted the search for the wreck. The discovery of the Dmitrii Donskoi in July intrigued historians and investors around the world.

The shipwreck was at a depth of more than 425m about 1.5km off the South Korean island of Ulleungdo Video released of the wreckage showed the extensive damage to the vessel caused in an encounter with Japanese warships in May 1905, along with cannons and deck guns encrusted with marine growth, the anchor and the ship’s wheel. You might be able to repair a cracked tile with a special adhesive silicone, but if you need to find a new tile be careful as there are all sorts of patterns, left or right-handed and some are shorter or longer than others.

A couple of cracker rains of late are enough to test any roof or spoutings. Hot days, high winds then lots of water at once create ideal conditions for leaking roofs or unwanted water seeping in where it shouldn’t.

Make sure you attempt a job like this on a fine, windless day when you can cover the hole, take the old tile and spend the morning searching for the exact match. Start removing tiles in the suspect area. With them removed, there’ll be evidence of the leak and you’ll be able to track it down right to the source.

Sometimes your roof will develop a leak years before the entire roof needs replacing, and often that leak is localised. The hardest part is locating the problem but once you do find it, it could be a relatively easy fix, making it the ideal DIY job. If you discover a roof leak, you need to fix it straight away. Even over a short period of time small leaks can lead to bigger problems, such as rotten facias, weatherboards and damaged ceilings and insulation or mould.

Before heading up the ladder there are a few safety rules to observe. If possible hang in there until the weather fines up – it may mean only going up once. Sometimes the nail causing the problem will be quite distant from the spot in the ceiling where you noticed the leak. This is because the water has tracked down and along the woodwork in the roof cavity.

If the head has pulled from the nail (which often happens with very old leadhead nails) you can hammer a new nail in bang up against the old nail. The new head should cover the shaft of the old nail and create a seal. A little silicone under the head of the nail will ensure you get a good seal.

On a corrugated iron roof all the nails are lined up on the top of the corrugations. This is where they are least likely to cause leaks, as the water runs down the roof in the valleys of the corrugations.

Check all nails. Hammer them in place and listen for any hollow sounds where the nail hasn’t found anything solid. If necessary apply some paintable UVresistant silicone under or around the nail to aid the seal. These are also available in a variety of colours to match your roof.

Rubber-washered screws are prefered for roofing these days as they create a good seal and are less likely to pop. The humble roofing nail has been superceded but has still come a long way from the old lead head to rubber-washered with spiral shafts.

If you hammer a nail in anywhere other than along the lines where the purlins are, you’ll hammer into air, have no seal and cause a leak.

If you need to pull a nail out to replace it, always pull it straight upwards. If you pull it sideways you could tear the iron, which will make it hard to seal over the wide hole with

If it’s a tiled roof, walk on the overlap of the tiles where there is most support. Try to walk as much as possible with both feet on the surface to distribute your weight evenly, and avoid all your weight on one foot.

When you’re trying to track down a leak, start by looking at the roof uphill from the stains. The first thing to look for is any roof penetrations. Items that penetrate the roof are by far the most common source of leaks. In fact, it’s rare for leaks to develop in open areas of uninterrupted tiles, even on older roofs. Penetrations can include plumbing and roof vents, chimneys, or anything else that projects through the roof. They can be several feet above the leak or to the right or left of it. If you have a roof cavity, the easiest way to track down a leak is to go up there in the rain with a flashlight and look for the leak, find the exact tile and poke a piece of wire or something up under the tile so you can find the tile on the outside and replace it. Have a good look around in the ceiling for any other leaks as minor leaks can cause damage for years before you notice any obvious signs of a leak. As with anything preventive maintenance is the key to a healthy roof. Keep your tiles free of moss and either painted or silicone sealed regularly as when allowed to become porous they expand and contract then freeze in winter, damaging or even cracking the tiles.

Tabbouleh, often seen in Turkish restaurants, is a vegetarian salad. Its main ingredients are parsley, quinoa and chopped vegetables with a citrus dressing. LC70 – King of the hill

he music choice, given the looks, size and heavy metal used in Toyota’s iconic LC70, just had to be Metallica’s Greatest Hits! And that was certainly not to drown out engine or road noise, for this the latest version of this truck, proved surprisingly quiet, and civilised to drive, albeit, in an unapologetically rugged way. They have always been pretty much kings of the hill and mostly spotted about NZ doing the real hard yards, such as serious towing and load carrying on high country stations, mines and in forests. Wherever it might be, their long history shows they are no-compromise, strong, hard-working, virtually unbreakable trucks with ample grunt, good (283mm) clearance, a clean underbelly and other goanywhere features. The fuel tank capacity has increased from 90 litres to 130 litres. With 4WD vehicles definitely continuing to become more genteel, it is great to see Toyota continuing to commit to the real thing. Real being the heavy duty ladder chassis, dual-range 4x4 complete with dual range transfer case, diff locks front and rear with dual automatic locking hubs on all models, and a big, unstressed V8 diesel. There’s cruise control across the range, and every model gets a reversing camera. Oh but what about health and safety? Well no compromises there either, especially for the single cab models whose

comprehensive safety equipment gives them the maximum 5-star ANCAP safety rating. This safety gear includes side, curtain and driver’s knee airbags, pre-tensioned seat-belts, stability and active traction control, hill-start assist and a reversing camera. LC70s are available as a single cab/chas-

sis (2.4m x1.8m tray costs around $4000) or a double cab with correspondingly shorter tray. As well there’s a Wagon with two seats and van-like cargo space. The 5.2 metres long, and tall, tried and tested exterior is pretty much unchanged except for a slightly higher bulge in the bonnet.

You climb up in and there’s an expansive view to the front and sides from the long haul, comfortable seats. Expectedly the cabin furnishings and controls are practical and durable, and there’s no fancy stuff such as electric windows or central locking. But while sitting tall enough to eyeball truckers, it has also joined the digital age, for there’s a 6.1-inch screen, decent sound system, with CD player, USB port, Bluetooth and simple but efficient air-con All models use the reliable 4.5-litre V8 turbo diesel engine producing 151kW of power and 430Nm of torque from 1200 to 3200rpm. With new injectors and diesel particulate filter, it meets EURO 5 emission regulations. This big, relaxed V8 is a wonderful lugger and while the gearbox remains a 5-speed manual, it gets taller 2nd and 5th gears. It feels strong, changes easily and given the engine’s pulling power, doesn’t need more ratios. It’s reasonably quick off the mark when you need it to be, and then on the open road it happily lopes along at 100km/h in a surprisingly quiet and refined manner. The other surprise, given the heavy duty suspension with the amount of off-road articulation it offers, is just how good the on-road ride is and how flat it sat through corners with just a light load on the deck and towing a largish pop-top camper. - By Roger Hart

udi will reveal a world first during the 2018 Pebble Beach Car Week in California – a supercar concept car with electric drive. Pebble Beach Car Week, held every August in and around the Californian coastal city of Monterey, has long been considered the world’s most important forum for lovers of exquisite automobiles.

Interest is not limited here to vintage cars but instead includes leading-edge design study concept cars and visionary technology. The abbreviated name for the Audi premiere – Audi PB18 e-tron – refers to the Pebble Beach venue and the year of the debut. It likewise recalls the LeMans-series winner Audi R18 e-tron, whose technology

inspired the solutions for various details. The styling of the Audi PB 18 e-tron was developed at the new Malibu Design Loft. uring the company’s official press conference at the Geneva Motor Show, Honda has confirmed that order books for the production version of its Urban EV Concept will open in early 2019, with first deliveries expected by the end of 2019. Senior Vice President of Honda Motor Europe, Philip Ross, confirmed the news. “A production version of this highly acclaimed concept will be introduced to Europe during late 2019, and in response to the positive feedback to this model, we expect to open order banks for the Urban EV during early 2019.” The production model of the Urban EV Concept will be Honda’s first mass-produced battery electric vehicle sold in Europe. Unfortunately Honda did not confirm any other markets for the full-electric hatch. But due to the rave response the concept received when it was revealed, Honda will likely use

the European release to gauge market reaction which will no doubt shape future roll-outs on different continents. The Urban EV will be built on a completely new platform with retro body styling. If dimensions remain the same, the Urban EV will be 100mm shorter than the current Honda Jazz. The Concept features a simple yet lovable retro design with slim A-pillars and interior windscreen that appears to sweep around the entire front of the passenger cabin. Honda say the Urban EV will carry four occupants in comfort, but it is not yet known if the bench seats previewd in the concept model will be carried over into production. The dashboard features a wraparound screen that extends into the doors displaying vehicle information.

he first McLaren Senna built, which carries chassis number 001, was officially presented this week to its owner, London-based businessman, David Kyte – who immediately set out to enjoy his new purchase on a 1400km road trip, accompanied by five other McLaren cars. Following the presentation by McLaren CEO, Mike Flewitt and other McLaren Automotive and McLaren Special Operations senior executives, which took place at the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, UK, ‘Senna 001’ departed for the south of France with three other McLaren Sennas, a McLaren 720S and a McLaren 600LT. The convoy of supercars, whose drivers included racing driver and nephew of Ayrton Senna, Bruno Senna; McLaren Automotive Chief Operating Officer, Dr Jens Ludmann and McLaren Ultimate Series Vehicle Line Director, Andy Palmer, has now arrived at the Circuit Paul Ricard near Marseille, where Mr Kyte will join a Pure McLaren driving experience taking place this weekend. “Handing over the key to the first customer McLaren Senna built was an honour for me and a milestone for the company,” commented McLaren Automotive CEO, Mike Flewitt. “David Kyte is a longstanding McLaren enthusiast with a true passion for our brand and a number of McLarens to prove it. “We have had many conversations about the car he has now taken delivery of and while I believe that the McLaren Senna is already incredible in every respect, the additional work that David has commissioned from McLaren Special Operations has taken ‘Senna 001’ to another level.” Finished in MSO Anniversary White with striking livery painted in MSO Aurora Blue and the Senna brand displayed on the wing endplate, the bespoke McLaren Senna also features roof ‘snorkel’, T-Bar and fuel filler cover in MSO Satin Visual Carbon Fibre; brake calipers painted in MSO Bespoke Burton Blue; and MSO Bespoke Coloured Centre Lock wheel nuts in Volcano Red. One for the drivers

ia’s styling department, headed by Peter Schreyer, certainly comes up with some original eye catching designs, including this swoopy and nicely proportioned Stinger. Engineer Albert Bierman (previously with BMW’s M Division) has added his expertise to ensure the car has all the requirements necessary to justify it being called a Gran Turismo (GT), and also being just as interesting and as involving to drive, as it is to look at. Like when pressing the start button. What springs into life is a sweet-revving, very smooth and wonderfully responsive, twin turbo 3.3litre V6, which dishes up an impressive 272kW and 510Nm of torque, the latter right from just 1300rpm through to 4500rpm. That means it doesn’t need to be worked to get the car moving, though of course doing that, in appropriate circumstances, is a pleasure in itself. Drive reaches the rear wheels via an 8-speed auto, which makes the most of the prodigious torque available and a limitedslip-diff. For everyday driving this combination is smooth and efficient in either the of the selectable Comfort or Smart modes, which deliver either quick acceleration and/or a relaxed, quiet cruise. Then there’s Sport, which invites you to make good use of the paddles. Doing so, in conjunction with the launch control can result in 0-100kmh in just under five seconds. Ideal for one in a rush! Oh yes, there’s an Eco mode as well, although I can’t imagine Stinger drivers using this much. Kia give an overall consumption figure

of 10.2L/100km. On a door to door Ashburton to Christchurch trip in Comfort mode, the trip computer showed 7.6L/100km, helped no doubt by the very good stop/ start about the city. Like most cars set up to handle precisely and riding on 19-inch wheels with low profile tyres, the Stingers around town ride is on the firmer side. But this really only shows with a few jiggles on a couple of our local much-dug up and “repaired” roads. And some of those in inner Christchurch, conditions where it was obviously best to have the electronically adjustable, continuously variable shock-absorbers in the most compliant setting, of which there are five. In this respect, Kia Australia have had a hand in tuning the suspension, so its rather well-sorted for Anzac road conditions. The variable ratio, rack and pinion electric steering is well-weighted and nicely informative, with responsive turn-in. All of which, in concert with the rear wheel drive ,adds up to an excellent handling package, one that is certainly both predictable and enjoyable when pressing on through winding corners. Traction too is very good for a powerful rear-wheel-drive car with the advantage of a limited-slip-diff. But of course even with this,and the myriad of driver-assist functions (they’re certainly not notably intrusive though), one needs to be mindful with one’s right foot of the power that’s instantly available. Quite appropriately there’s excellent stopping power, courtesy of ventilated Brembo brakes, front and rear. You can appreciate all of this from the cabin whose fittings, finish (this certainly reflects the German influence) and whose

The GT-Sport adds a power sunroof, suede headlining, an excellent HarmanKardon sound system with 15 speakers, 8inch touch-screen, sat-nav, dual climate air, heads up display, LED head lights that turn with the steering and more. Most shapes and sizes should be able to find the ideal driving position on the plush, form-fitting, nappa leather sports seat given its rather plentiful array of power adjustments for position, lumbar and bolster support. Plus the seat cushion extends as well. There’s good head and leg space in the rear, which is best for two adults on matchingly comfy seats. Their footspace under the front seats is however limited. They’re well catered for with ventilation and charging points. The tailgate, complete with a powered lid which has adjustable opening height settings, reveals a low but wide luggage space. This is of sufficient size (406 litres) for the necessities of four on grand tour. The seat-backs split 60/40 as well.

Grab your resting dough and tip onto a lightly floured bench. Punch the dough a couple of times then knead carefully. Divide the ball into four, roll each piece out to about a dinner plate size. Place a quarter of the combined filling ingredients onto half of each disc, being careful to leave a 2cm edge free of ingredients. Fold over pastry to cover the filling and seal the edge. Aged care sector running on empty I

t’s no secret that, as a country, we’re running short on the medical staff needed to care for our growing health needs. Doctors, nurses, dentists and specialists in all fields, the wait for an appointment is long and often pain riddled. And sadly, for some with serious conditions, the wait becomes terminal. Ashburton is forecast to have a shortage in its GP ranks by 2028. The reality is this is not new news. We’ve been travelling well above the so-called patient-doctor ratio norm for years. Like the rest of the country our GPs are ageing and young doctors are not coming forward in sufficient numbers to take their place.

Clearly it’s only going to get worse. But there’s another health care sector that unfortunately flies under the radar when it comes to how it’s faring numbers-wise and that’s aged care. The nurses and care staff who work in this sector do a truly amazing job, often in very testing conditions. Largely, they are over-worked and they are under-paid. The work they do might not make

a life or death difference but the quality of that work has an immense effect on the quality of life of the elderly in their care. There’s no hiding the fact that this is hard work. While many resthome residents are able to provide most of their own day-to-day care, just as many are not and require assistance to carry out the most basic of personal care. Care workers who spend their working day lifting the bedridden, wiping up messes of all kinds, serving meals, providing a smile, a kind word and a friendly face – often the only ones some elderly see – are paid a pittance for their efforts. That’s wrong on every level. If there’s a crisis in health care numbers it’s significantly worse

at this end of the scale. Few Kiwis want to work in aged care and increasingly those jobs are snapped up by new New Zealanders. Take a look in any resthome and you may be surprised to find few Kiwi faces in sight. Kiwis wouldn’t get out of bed for the wages most often paid. But no matter how kind, how caring, how dedicated to the job careworkers are, the inescapable fact is there are too few of them trying to do too much work for too little money. And that’s just not fair on two fronts – to the careworkers and to the resthome residents who are being short changed at every turn. If we value our seniors and the contribution they’ve made

to society and to their families then as a country we need to be doing a whole lot more to ensure they spend they days of their frail senior years in an environment where care is the byword rather than accidental if time allows. If we’re happy to pay our aged care workers and nursing staff bottom end wages, what kind of message does that send to every person who faces the spectre of spending their twilight years in a resthome? Being treated with care and respect should be the right of every elderly person in care. Care and respect should not occur only if time allows. Yes, resthomes have to make money, but we’re dealing with people here, not commodities.

They also import waste from Norway, UK and other countries in Europe, so they make money as well as creating energy. power waste-to-energy plant. The plant opened on March 30, 2017. It is estimated to have cost $670 million and is expected to burn 400,000 tons of municipal solid waste annually. Here’s the cool bit – it has an 85 metre tall, sloped roof that doubles as year-round artificial ski slope, hiking slope and climbing wall, which is scheduled to open to the public this year. It produces more clean water than it uses because of filtration and other technologies. It is claimed to be the cleanest incineration plant in the world. A special feature of this facility will be that the chimney is intended to not emit its exhaust continuously, but, instead in the form of “smoke” rings (consisting of water vapour rather than actual smoke). That’s our mountain of plastic all sorted! What about the food waste? Don’t panic I have that sorted too. Rats and mice will pretty much eat anything right? I know I have talked about this no-brainer venture before, but now with a food source sorted, surely it becomes even more viable? Wait there’s more!! This is the freaky bit. Within hours of my pondering the mouse farm, saving the world and just growing a pair and getting stuck into it, I came across this. (Insert dramatic music). Scientists say that the driving force behind many of the most successful entrepreneurs around the world may be ... a brain parasite. The single-cell protozoan parasite, which is spread by cats, is known to invade the brain and may cause personality changes associated with risk-taking. While rarely producing symptoms other than a mild flu-like illness, T.gondii infection seems to drive risk-taking in business, helping to promote entrepreneurial activity. Professionals attending business events were almost twice as likely to have started their own enterprise if they were T.gondii

positive. The research findings suggest that reduced fear of failure may be the key factor in explaining the association between T.gondii infection and entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship is characterised as a “high-risk, high-reward” activity. Rats infected with T.gondii appear to lose their natural fear of predators. Wow!! A parasite spread by cats, tested on rats that promotes entrepreneurial activity! How clear can a sign be? I’m off to the shelter to buy all their cats. Look out, world! Ashburton is blessed to have a number of parks through which one can stroll, run or cycle. A huge bouquet to the Ashburton District Council for constructing what is now a complete circuit around the perimeter of Argyle Park. During this tournament my daughter visited me while playing in this tournament in her school uniform. She and I received many compliments on how nice and smart her school uniform looked. I have walked around the malls in Christchurch and have seen many young adults wearing their school uniforms. Some of those looked like they were from the olden days when my mother went to school and had to wear the old gym frock. Some were really awful colour combinations and my daughter and I have quite often commented how lucky Ashburton College is to have such a nice uniform com-

■ ECONOMIC DOWNTURN

Worrying signs for economy Former PM John Key grabbed headlines at the weekend warning that New Zealand faces an economic downturn. Then this week we saw sentiment on the ANZ Business Outlook slump to levels not seen since the global financial crisis. We saw unemployment start heading in the wrong direction after five consecutive monthly falls. We saw QV data showing the national average house price fell. And we saw a major construction firm go into receivership leaving a number of half-finished projects. Are we doing this? Are we having a downturn? And if so how serious will it actually be? From a business point of view, there are some worrying signs, ASB chief economist Nick Tuffley told The Economy Hub this week. Even putting aside the usual lower levels of confidence under Labour Governments, business appeared to be rattled by policies

Business confidence crashing

here has certainly been a lot of economic data and corporate news flow for investors to digest over the past week. This was a big week for central banks with the Bank of Japan, the Federal Reserve and Bank of England all holding policy meetings. Global reporting season also remains at the forefront with a slew of corporate heavyweights releasing results this week. Trade war tensions have also returned to the global market. Locally, NZ business confidence has hit a 10-year low. NZ business confidence continued to fall in July, reaching its lowest level since May 2008 according to the latest ANZ Business Outlook Survey. Business confidence dropped to a net 45 per cent of respondents reporting they expect general business conditions to deteriorate in the year ahead. This compared to a net of 39 per cent last month. A key theme was that businesses are battling in the face of higher input costs and declining profitability, with the retail sector particularly downbeat. On a related note, farmer confidence fell to a six-year low amid uncertainty over government policies. A net 39 per cent of farmers were pessimistic about the general economic outlook for the year ahead, up from a net 34 per cent six months ago. New Zealand’s unemployment rate rose to 4.5 per cent for the quarter ending June, up from 4.4 per cent at the end of March. The figure was slightly above

forecasts of 4.4 per cent. Wage inflation in the private sector rose a modest 0.6 per cent or 2.1 per cent for the year, largely due to the government raising the minimum wage to $16.50 an hour in April. Public sector wage inflation rose only 0.3 per cent, or a 1.4 per cent annual gain, however mounting pressure from strike action across the country may spur a lift. Three of the world’s biggest central banks convened this week, keeping markets on their toes. Japan’s central bank surprised the market early in the week by keeping its current monetary policy in place and saying it would make its policy framework more flexible for Japanese government bonds. The bank maintained its target for the 10-year government bond yield at around 0 per cent and the short-term interest rate at -0.1 per cent. The decision comes after speculation that the Japanese bank is actively discussing changes to its policies, which caused the government bond prices to fall steeply. The Bank of Japan also acknowledged that it will take more time than expected to achieve its inflation target of 2 per cent.

In the US, the Federal Reserve kept the Fed Funds rate unchanged at 1.75 per cent to 2 per cent and signalled its intention to continue hiking interest rates against the backdrop of a strong US economy. Markets have pencilled in two further rate hikes this year. At the time of writing, we await the Bank of England policy meeting, with markets seeing a good chance that the bank will raise its policy rate from the current 0.5 per cent. Trade war tensions between the US and China were re-ignited mid-week after The White House said it would consider more than doubling its proposed tariffs on $200bn of Chinese goods from 10 per cent to 25 per cent. A final decision on the rate to be applied is not expected until September at the earliest, so ongoing market volatility in regards to trade wars is likely to remain. Finally, the global reporting season has also remained a key focus this week, with Apple, Caterpillar, Tesla, Procter & Gamble, Shire, Pfizer and FMC just some of the heavyweight names to report. Of note, Apple’s strong third quarter result beat estimates, thanks to the resilient demand for its iPhone X and other high priced products. Trainer stunned by weight Shelley Hale is giving Grant Cooksley the opportunity to get a line on both her stable stars at Te Rapa on Saturday. Cooksley will ride Close Up in the open sprint, despite the handicapper shocking Hale by giving the Group One winner 63.5kg, and the Cambridge trainer has decided to also take the Group Two-winning stablemate Seventh Up to Te Rapa for an exhibition gallop between races with Cooksley in the saddle. The Te Rapa race has been included in the programme for Close Up after he missed a freshup run recently because of a stone bruise. He was to be ridden that day by Cambridge apprentice Eilish McCall with Hale planning to make use of her 4kg claim. “He was given 62.5 kilos that day and I was going for the claim because all the rest bar one were on 54 kilos, the minimum,” Hale said. “I was expecting the same weight or maybe a bit less this time because this race is a stronger field with the likes of Julius in it. “I’m stunned by the weight, but he needs to go round. “I’ll stick with Cookie because I want to get a line on him for the Foxbridge Plate and Tarzino Trophy, but he can’t win with that weight.” Close Up has 4kgs more than Julius, his nearest-weighted rival, and he will be giving up to 9.5kgs to the other opposition. “He’s far better suited when he gets to weight-for-age and he meets most of them on level terms,” Hale said. “The same thing happened last year. “He was carrying 60kg and giving them all too much weight until the Foxbridge and that’s when he became really competitive.” Close Up was runner-up to Underthemoonlight in last year’s Gr.2 Lisa Chittick Foxbridge Plate (1200m) then he turned the tables on the Matamata mare when

Buster Brady sold Well-performed Canterbury pacer Buster Brady has been sold to clients of leading Victorian trainer David Aiken. His Christchurch breeder/owner/trainer, Jock Austin, said he was sad to see the horse go, but the time was right for him to have a change of scenery. Buster Brady won eight races and nearly $170,000 for Austin, but his best effort came when he didn’t even fill a placing. “To run fifth in the New Zealand Cup last season was the best moment.” - HRNZ

Licence changes

Close Up will have Grant Cooksley aboard at Te Rapa tomorrow. he won the Gr.1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m), providing Hale with her first Group One win. Cooksley has been aboard Close Up in every one of his last 11 starts for four wins and four placings, including a second in last year’s Gr.1 Windsor Park Plate (1600m). He also made the trip to the Te Rapa trials a couple of weeks ago to ride Close Up when second to Melody Belle over 900 metres and he gave the nine-year-old an exhibition gallop between races at Rotorua last Saturday. Both Cooksley and Hale agreed Close Up definitely needed the hit-out at Rotorua. “He’s still a bit burly and he had a good puff after the gallop,” Hale said.

“But he recovered really quickly and I’m very happy with how he is. “It was tough in that going at Rotorua, but he ran home a couple of seconds faster for the last 600 metres than most of the winners did on the day.” Hale also has Seventh Up entered for this year’s Tarzino Trophy and he could also be considered for the Foxbridge Plate, depending on how he performs in his exhibition gallop this weekend. “He’s had a couple of pieces of fast work and he’s going well,” Hale said. “Getting a decent gallop into him at Te Rapa on Saturday will bring him on and it will also be a chance for Cookie to assess how

he’s going right now. “If he works up well and Cookie is happy with him he could go to the Foxbridge Plate with Close Up.” If the two Group winners do clash in the Foxbridge Plate and/ or the Tarzino Trophy, Cooksley will have a tough choice to make as he is the regular rider of both horses. “I’ll leave it up to Cookie if that happens,” Hale said. “I know he’s got a high opinion of Seventh Up, but he might want to stick with Close Up at this stage. “He’ll know more after Saturday. “It’ll be a good chance for him to get a line on them both.” - NZME

A-game and more BY PATRICK MCKENDRY The Lions are preparing for what they admit is the toughest challenge in Super Rugby by staying up late and sleeping in. They also say they are blessed to be playing the Crusaders in Christchurch and that it is an honour to be here. On the face of it that strategy and attitude doesn’t sound like a winner, but the men from Johannesburg have arrived in the south for their third consecutive final with a quiet confidence. They respect hugely what is in effect an All Blacks team in disguise but are determined to put lessons learned into practice tomorrow. For a team – a brotherhood, they say have achieved a huge amount in a short time. But a grand final win still escapes them. To inflict a first ever home finals defeat on the Crusaders would be the rugby upset of the year, but expectations are so low here and at home that they really do have nothing to lose. The late nights and sleep-ins is a strategy to combat jetlag which they have used before – most recently before the round robin game against the Waratahs in Sydney. And the respect talked about after coach Swys de Bruin announced his side isn’t contrived; rather, it is truly felt and nothing other than a full-octane performance against the defending champions would do that justice, they feel. Coach de Bruin has made two changes to the line-up which beat the Waratahs in the semifinal at Ellis Park last weekend – flanker Cyle Brink replacing Lourens Erasmus in the No.7 jersey and Courtnall Skosan starting on the left wing ahead of Aphiwe Dyantyi. That sense of continuity is appropriate for a team who seem to thrive on it. “They’re a very good team and they deserve to be in first place, so congratulations to them,” de Bruin said yesterday of the Crusaders at his team’s inner city hotel. “We’ll have to bring our Agame and more. “Apart from that we have a

a place that has rugby running through its veins. “People absolutely live for this game; [we’re] playing against the side that’s the best rugby team in the world.” Is this the toughest test in Super Rugby? “At this stage, yes,” said Whiteley. “If you look at their results over the last couple of weeks and how they’ve constantly improved… this is why you play the game – for opportunities like this. “We knew we’d keep most of the guys for this season,” de Bruin said as he reflected on the feeling after last year’s final. “We’ve had a lot of injuries at the wrong times but all of those things build character.” And that is what this team, easily the best in South Africa and with an ability to play any way (just like the Crusaders), are all about. - NZME

Backline general Will Genia is glad to be one of the big beneficiaries from the Wallabies’ hastily-arranged trial match. Without tonight’s trial in Sydney, Genia faced going into the Bledisloe Cup opener against the All Blacks on August 18 having not played for two months. The match will be Genia’s first since suffering a broken arm in the second test against Ireland on June 16. The 90-cap halfback is no stranger to tackling highstakes tests without recent match preparation, and he has shown he can handle it. But he definitely prefers this alternative. - AAP

Lydia Ko has revealed that her mum is the person she looks up to the most. Ahead of the Women’s British Open, Ko opened up about the sacrifices her mum has made for her and called her a “huge inspiration”. “I think my mom is somebody that I really look up to even though, from day to day, you don’t get your chance to express yourself much in that way,” Ko told CNN. Harrison signs off on a stellar netball career By Cheree Kinnear As the Northern Mystics desperately tried to claw back lost ground in the final minutes of their clash against the Central Pulse, captain Anna Harrison was holding back her tears. Realising that her side would not be able to secure their spot in the playoffs as the Pulse surged ahead to a 55-48 victory, Harrison was hit with the reality of her retirement. “In the last minute, I was like ‘ok we’re not going to get those last goals in and this is it’ so there was a bit of deep breathing going on in those last minutes to control the emotion,” Harrison said. “It’s still sinking in, it’s not all tears but it’s a big part of your life that you’re letting go.” The former Silver Ferns defender, who played 53 tests for the national side, was a key part

in the Ferns’ 2006 and 2010 Commonwealth gold medal-winning campaigns. The 35-year-old then signed with the Mystics for the 2011 ANZ Championship season and had remained loyal to her Auckland side since. Although disappointed to leave the Premiership empty handed and without a shot at the finals, Harrison said she couldn’t complain. “I came into the game thinking that it wasn’t going to be my last one, I had the faith that we could do it and unfortunately we didn’t bring our A game.” “But I can’t really complain about the season, these girls have been awesome and a great environment for me to finish up my career.” Unsure about what her netball future held or whether she would use her physiotherapy degree to

launch a new career, Harrison said she wouldn’t rule anything out. “I guess the scary part is I’m not quite sure, I’ve got a degree but I’m not sure if I want to use it and it’s finding something that I love and want to put as much time and energy into as I did with my sport. “Coaching interests me but I’m not sure if it would be immediate future or later down the track. “I’m known to say never say never but yes I’m calling time ... this one has been a tough decision but I’ve always wanted to be in control of it and not be weaned out of the game ... so to leave when I’m feeling good and in control is a nice feeling.” Known for her innovative defence tactics, the Mystics skipper was sure to make her final professional netball outing one for the highlights reel.

Up to her usual tricks, Harrison sprung off the thigh of fellow defender Phoenix Karaka in an attempt to block Pulse shooter Ameliaranne Ekenasio. The audacious jump named the Phoenix Launch Pad by Harrison herself, is sure to be remembered alongside the defender’s signature Harrison Hoist which sees one defender lift the other in order to gain elevation. Harrison said although the daring feat would need some fine tuning she was hopeful someone would give it a go in the future. “It was something I’ve wanted to do for a while and I thought no better time to do it than in possibly your last game ever,” she said after the match. “Didn’t quite pull it off, I think I must have kicked her [Karaka] in the guts so not ideal, fine tune that one but someone might do it.” - NZME

By Oliver Caffrey Almost forgotten in the hype of a historic Supercars night race is the Sydney leg will be a significant endurance test. Drivers this weekend will race under lights for the first time in Australia since 1997’s Calder Park round. While there is a sense of unknown for the field about how being on the grid after dark will impact racing, the 300km spectacle provides a challenge in itself. It will be the longest single-driver race since 2003, something Tickford Racing’s Mark Winterbottom thinks can’t be underestimated. “On the Gold Coast, we do 300 kilometres but we share it with someone else,” Winterbottom told AAP from Fox Sports’ Sydney SuperNight 300 launch. “It’s not just going to be a physical challenge, as well on top of the lighting conditions it’s all going to be mentally testing. “It’s definitely slipped under the radar in terms of the physicality and mental toughness required for what’s ahead.” The 2015 champion has fond memories of the Supercars’ last night race, which took place in Abu Dhabi seven years ago. The Ford flyer finished third in the first of two races but believes there will be no comparisons to what happens at Sydney Motorsport Park. There was a permanent set-up in Abu Dhabi compared with the 60 temporary light towers installed at the Eastern Creek venue. “That night race (in Abu Dhabi) was probably brighter than an overcast day race. The lighting was ridiculous,” Winterbottom said. “In Sydney we won’t experience it for the first time until Friday night (with practice) and then Saturday night will be the first time we’ll race as a pack under the lights. “It’s the unknown about what’s

Mid Canterbury’s top netballers head to Timaru this weekend with one thing on their minds – winning. But they know it won’t be easy. Every year Mid Canterbury, South Canterbury and North Otago meet in the Hanan Shield tournament, and every year it’s close, with the results from the past few years illustrating that. North Otago won it in 2017, South Canterbury won it in 2016, and Mid Canterbury last won it in 2015. This year, Mid Canterbury had a new coach and a new-look, young and relatively inexperienced team, but they were determined

to win it, coach Claire Tappin said. The Hanan Shield was their one and only tournament this season. “Bringing back the shield is the only goal. “At this point we aren’t looking at player development or building for the next year, we are going to Timaru to bring back the shield and that is the only goal, and that is the only thing the girls will be happy with,” Tappin said. While they didn’t have much of an idea of what their oppositions would look like, they knew that every year the tournament was tight. A small error in the opening quarter of a match could be the difference between winning and losing, Tappin said.

“It’s about going out there and working hard for the first five minutes. “That’s crucial, you can’t afford to leave it until the end,” Tappin said. A three-team tournament meant only two chances to get it right. It was always intense, Tappin said. “You don’t get a second chance. If there is a stuff-up in that first game, the shield is gone.” Teams could change a lot from year to year so it was hard to know what each team would be like. This year’s Mid Canterbury team was an example of that, with just three players – captain Gina Woodhouse, vice-captain Anna

Holland, and Shannon Stockdale – having played in a Hanan Shield campaign before. Only around half of the squad had even had prior senior rep level netball experience. “I don’t know anything about these two other teams. “We just know that traditionally they tend to pull themselves together at the last minute and annoy everyone by coming out on court and just producing it,” Tappin said. They did know there would be at least one familiar face in the South Canterbury team though, with Stacey Grant-Smith in the South Canterbury side. Grant-Smith has played in both the South and Mid Can-

terbury competitions – playing in the United A side coached by Tappin in Mid Canterbury – but when it came to Hanan Shield, her allegiance was to South Canterbury. Although the tournament was in Timaru, Tappin and her team were hoping there would be plenty of friends, family and Mid Canterbury netball supporters courtside cheering them on, because often that support could make all the difference. Mid Canterbury’s games were scheduled for 10am and midday on Sunday at Timaru’s Aorangi Stadium. One local umpire – Heath Lyttle – would also be in action at the tournament.
