Police in the district will remain armed like their wider Canterbury colleagues until a wanted man is detained. The directive comes after three firearms incidents have occurred in the last week directed at police staff, including one where a man was shot after failing to stop for police. “One individual is still sought by police in connection with this armed incident and we are con-
ducting extensive inquiries to locate him. “We believe this person may be armed,” Canterbury District Commander Superintendent John Price said. “Until he is located, or hands himself in, frontline Level 1 responders in Canterbury will be carrying firearms for their own safety and the safety of the public. “Our officers are operating in an environment of heightened risk and they deserve to

Property owners in the Ashburton District might be smiling come July when they find they’re facing a very modest rates rise. This week district councillors took their first look at draft budgets for the next financial year and without cutting too many corners have managed to keep next year’s rate rise below 5 per cent. Getting to that point, however, meant a little shuffling of where the money would come from to fund several projects. Rather than taking the money from general rates, they opted to draw down on the property reserve pool. It was a move that made council finance and business support manager, Paul Brake, a little nervous. “You’ve got this down by chewing into reserves. It’s your decision what you want to do, run reserves down or stick with 5.7 per cent,” he said. One of the bigger items that will come from reserves is $100,000 for a survey of the Lake Clearwater settlement and $125,000 to reroof the Tinwald Memorial Hall. “Our reserves are getting extensively used and if you take money from reserves it’s gone,” Brake said. Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel conceded the council’s reserves were being drawn on more heavily than usual in the coming year’s budget, but said her focus was on keeping the rate rise under 5 per cent. Leen Braam didn’t agree. He was happy to keep the rise at 5.7 per cent rather than “hammering” reserves. With a 4.9 per cent average rate rise for the district signalled, councillors will take another look at the budget in two weeks before finalising the numbers.

Mount Hutt College to lose Schreurs By SuSaN SaNdyS

Mount Hutt College principal John Schreurs has tendered his resignation from the school. The 60-year-old said yesterday while he loved his job and was enthusiastic about it, there was much to do to take the school into its next chapter. “I’m not sure if I have got the energy,” he said. “And, if I’m thinking like that, then someone with new ideas, new blood, may be well placed to come in and move the school along.” He admitted he was probably a little tired and worn out, but was recognising it early, and wanted to see the school continue to thrive as it approached an era of projected roll growth. Schreurs will remain at the helm for the remainder of Term 1, and then in Terms 2 and 3 he will be on study leave, continuing to support the board, acting principal and wider college as required. Schreurs said he was contemplating what he would be studying, and said he would be taking stock of his future. It was likely he would continue to work in the field of education. He and wife Pam live in Methven but have their family home in Christchurch. Their daughter Hannah works in the food technology industry in Melbourne and their son Hamish is a professional cyclist for the Israeli Cycling Academy in Spain. Schreurs himself had a sense of sadness about leaving the role, one he has held since the year of the major Canterbury earth-

ing physically active again, perhaps getting back to running or cycling, things which had been hard to fit in to the demanding job of a school principal. The school’s board will soon begin meetings to begin the process of appointing an acting principal, and plan its recruitment strategy for Schreurs’ replacement
Board members yesterday said it was with “deep sadness” they advised of the resignation. “Throughout his tenure at Mount Hutt College, John has been a respected member of our community, and much-liked by teaching staff, support staff and students alike,” personnel sub-committee chairman James McKenzie said.
“The board would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge John’s unequivocal commitment to the role of principal and thank him for the positive influence he has had within our school. “We will miss John’s professionalism, empathy and insight. We respect his decision and wish him all the best for his future endeavours.”
Business park section demand beats expectations By Sue NewmaN

Ashburton’s north-east business park is breaking its own records in terms of growth. The park, designed to provide the district with industrial and business space well into this century, is already ahead of its growth targets and work will begin later this year to open up
additional sections. When Ashburton District councillors looked at their budget for the next financial year, commercial manager Colin Windleborn said $2.878 million was needed to create more land options for buyers. The funds have been built into the council’s long-term plan, but councillors agreed they needed
to be pushed up the spending ladder. Development of sections at the business estate is staged according to demand, but high demand for smaller sections has meant larger lots have been subdivided putting pressure on the stock of large blocks, Windleborn said. The developed areas of the
park were estimated to last until 2021, but demand has outstripped forecasts and the council will now bring forward development of stages 2, 3a and 3b. Moving spending on development forward was a no-brainer, councillor Russell Ellis said. “This park is something the council can be proud of and if
we have people who want to buy land let’s get out so they can do that,” he said. The development will involve two lots along the railway line and will make another 20 hectares in the park available. With these areas subdivided, there will be 20 hectares in the eastern area remaining for future subdivision.

The Ashburton Racecourse has been a hive of activity this week, but instead of racehorses and happy punters, the main areas of the course have been filled with members of the Ashburton Pakeke Lions Club preparing for their annual charity market garage sale. Organisers of the event were thrilled with the numbers of items that had been donated so far, with some estimates putting it down as the largest year yet. “We just want to thank the public for all the kind donations they have made,” Dave Bennett. “This is our main fundraiser for the year, and the main goal for this year is to purchase a defibrillator for Tuarangi home.” The members of the club have been working hard throughout the week to organise the items in to their respective categories. “We couldn’t believe the amount of stuff,” he said. The sale will be open from 9am to 1pm today at the Ashburton Racecourse, with cash and eftpos available. Stalls will include cakes, produce and crafts, along with household, garden, workshop and sporting goods with entertainment for children.

As part of its drive to improve communications with residents, the Ashburton District Council plans to boost its staff numbers with a new web and social media officer. The fulltime position was approved at a recent round of budget discussions with the new position seen as a strategic way to communicate with residents about the council’s work. It will add $65,000 to the communication team’s budget.

Rakaia pitches for tourism funds BY SUE NEWMAN

The people of Rakaia have joined forces with the Ashburton District Council to make a pitch for funds from the Government’s Tourism Infrastructure Fund to improve a range of facilities along State Highway One. Council open spaces manager David Askin is putting together an application for funds that could see the village’s tourist hub, the Salmon Tales area, receive new toilets, an upgraded playground and improved parking space. The project started out as a drive to replace the heavily-used toilets with a larger complex, and then the community and Rakaia Lions became involved and the application is now for a much larger project, Askin said. “The problem at Rakaia is the toilets are
too small and door counters show they’re heavily used,” he said. “There are a lot of things involved in this one site so we’re putting all these issues into one package to see what we can get from the fund.” While Rakaia might be in line for new toilets, several district councillors made it clear at a budget meeting this week, that other parts of the district were still waiting for their first toilet block. Lynette Lovett said the layby at Ealing was well-used by travellers to break a journey, but the downside of that was people using a nearby pit area as a toilet. The council owns and services toilet blocks across a range of reserves and domains and each year spends $159,000 in wages to have these cleaned and maintained.

Tinwald’s Memorial Hall is in for a $125,000 spruce up in the next financial year, with the Ashburton District Council earmarking money to re-roof the building. An assessment was carried out on the roof last year and while a number of repairs have been undertaken over the past few years, these have proved inadequate and the roof now has several leaks. Council staff believe that, with a new roof, the hall should then have a lifespan of up to 50 years.

Organisers of the incredibly successful Shear for Life event have crunched the numbers and are hoping to donate roughly $90,000 to three separate cancer organisations in the coming months. “It is an impressive number and well beyond anything we could’ve thought of when we had our first meeting,” organiser Sandra Curd said. “It has all come through the generosity of the people involved and we are absolutely blown away.” Curd said all the groups involved with the event, especially the main attraction of the event, the shearers. “It is very unique for them to all come together and with the Golden Shears this week it made that commitment even more special,” she said. “It is a real accolade to Rocky (Bull) as he did such a great job to get them all together. “In reflection we are really proud of what we have achieved as we are just volunteers.” A repeat of the event looks to be off the table, with the organisers more than happy with the unique achievements the one-off event has delivered. “A few people have been ‘like can we get the shirts or the singlets’ but they are a limited-edition thing and we want to keep it at that,” she said. “It was a unique event.” The team of shearers were able to shear more than 3000 sheep, with an all-star line-up of shearers including multiple national shearing title winners and All Blacks legends like Buck Shelford.

Grass strip footpaths win few friends By Sue NewmaN

It might have seemed the answer to saving money in a cash strapped roading budget, but the grass strips installed on urban footpaths is earning the Ashburton District Council the ire of ratepayers. The partial grass project started several years ago as a money saver, but it’s had more than its fair share of teething problems, service delivery manager Neil McCann told councillors during Thursday’s discussions on next year’s budget. It was a two-pronged project as, in addition to saving money, the grass also provided absorption for
storm water, he said. “But we do receive quite a lot of criticism from people with heavily used footpaths. There are a lot of complaints, not many people say they’re happy with it.” McCann said the council did use some discretion now in where it installed the grass strips, particularly in high foot traffic areas. Perhaps, with the increase in mobility scooters and the importance of keeping people active, it might be a good time to review it, he said. The question councillors had to ask was whether, with the partial grass footpaths, the council was getting more bang for its footpath bucks, but they also had to ask
whether they were getting happier residents, Russell Ellis said. The district’s footpaths were now serving a wider range of users than just pedestrians, with scooters and mobility scooters now in the mix and the way those footpaths were constructed had to take into account the needs of different users, mayor Donna Favel said. If the current policy around footpath surfacing wasn’t working then it might need to be modified, Neil Brown said, and his words have given Harrison Street resident John Leadley a glimmer of hope the partially-grassed footpath treatment will be canned. Any policy change might come
too late for residents on his street, however. While he’s happy to see work underway on the Harrison Street footpath, Leadley said he was disappointed to find the new footpath would be partially grassed. Leadley said he was an advocate of street beautification but the grass berms did nothing to improve streetscapes. “The grass berm quality on the southern footpath opposite my place is deplorable since completion 18 months ago. It has little grass but healthy nodding thistles and gorse. It’s been a disaster.” Homeowners were given no choice when it came to the grass strips, there was no consultation
and yet they were expected to maintain those strips, he said. Some older people might not have lawnmowers and to keep their street area tidy they would be forced to pay a contractor to do the work, something many could not afford, Leadley said. “I have canvassed many of the residents of the affected street and have yet to find one who, given the option, would choose a retrospective grass berm. Surely this is dictation, not consultation.” He’s written to all district councillors asking them to take a long, hard look at the current policy. “Prove that common sense still has a place in decision making in this election year,” he said.

South Westland finds downside to cellphone coverage The recent addition of cellphone coverage in remote parts of South Westland has also introduced the area to a problem experienced everywhere – people driving while on the phone. Small cell towers have been erected at Haast township, Roaring Billy car park, Pleasant Flat, Lake Moeraki, Bruce Bay and Lake Wahapo. ‘’There have been several crashes directly next to these sites recently and the cell coverage is gold,’’ senior constable Paul Gurney, of Haast police, said. But the towers were small and only covered about 50m, so people had to stop their car. The Haast tower covers a wider area with a 4km radius. ‘’We are hoping they’ll be getting on to building the more permanent sites for Haast (Haast Junction, Okuru, Hannahs Clearing and Neils Beach/Jackson Bay),’’ Gurney said. ‘’The only negative for police is we now catch the ‘odd’ person driving while on the phone at Haast.’’

Teenagers in court after ram raid A group of teenagers in stolen cars allegedly drove into the front of two shops and stole electronics before trying to run down two police officers and fleeing on the wrong side of an Auckland motorway. Waitemata Police Detective Senior Sergeant Callum McNeill said six teenagers allegedly stole two cars from New Lynn late on Wednesday night and used one of the cars in a ram raid at a business nearby about 2.30am. The teens allegedly caused tens of thousands of dollars of damage and stole electronics before
ditching the car. McNeill said the group then drove to Milford in the second stolen car where they stole another car which they used in a ram raid about 3.50am. All six teens allegedly entered the store and stole a large amount of electronics before leaving in the stolen cars. Police in the area chased both cars, stopping one. Three people ran away but were found and arrested by police dog handlers. The driver of the second car allegedly tried to run down two

police officers before driving the wrong way down the Northern Motorway near Constellation Drive. The car continued in the wrong direction along the Upper Harbour Highway. McNeill said their actions put other drivers and police in “significant danger”. The car was eventually stopped by using spikes and the three occupants were arrested. Six people aged between 15 and 17 have appeared in the North Shore Youth Court on a number of charges. – NZME

Police officer charged with indecent assault A police officer has been charged with indecently assaulting a fellow cop. The 28-year-old accused appeared yesterday afternoon in the Auckland District Court before Judge David Burns. The policeman was arrested this morning, the court heard, and charged with indecent assault and sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection. He pleaded not guilty to both charges. The alleged offences occurred on February 5 in Northland, court documents viewed by the media read. The man’s lawyer, Paul Borich QC, sought interim name suppression for his client, which was consented to by Crown prosecutor Fiona Culliney.
Further details about the case were also suppressed. Bail was also granted by consent for the accused officer until he appears in court again next month. Detective Superintendent Dave Lynch said the charges related to two incidents. Both alleged incidents happened in the early hours of the morning on February 5, he said. The 28-year-old was arrested after his female colleague made a formal complaint. “The officer has been stood down and a separate employment investigation will follow in due course,” Lynch said. “As the matter is before the courts, we are not in a position to comment further.” – NZME

Saying goodbye to a
The closure of Cameron Courts is not just about the loss of a resthome, it’s about life changes for 10 elderly people. Reporter Sue Newman talks to one of those residents about the impact of that closure.
W
hen Margaret Halkett moved into Cameron Courts, she thought she’d moved to a home for life. But along with her nine fellow residents, 96-year-old Margaret was told on Thursday that the resthome was closing and she would need to find somewhere else to live. Owners Ash and Lowreen Mani have decided to close Cameron Courts because of declining resident numbers and that has meant the families of 10 elderly people are now searching for new beds in new resthomes. Most are putting on a brave face, but inside they’re wondering what their future holds, whether they’ll settle into a new place, whether they’ll ever find that sense of belonging that comes with familiarity. “This is my home, I’m heartbroken. It’s sad because everyone is so happy here, we’re all well fed,” Margaret said. Friendships run deep between resthome residents and for many at Cameron Courts, relocating to a new home is likely to mean losing friends as well as a home. After the announcement, the big topic of conversation was where people would go, Margaret said. She’s hoping to move to Coldstream Lifestyle Village. Her close friend is moving there and being together will make the transition much easier, she said. Daughter-in-law Jenny was making phone calls and looking at options. Most Cameron Courts residents were concerned at moving from a place they described as homely, to a newer facility where they feared they would be one resident among many in a place that may not have the same home-away-from-home feel. “This place has been like being at home. Places like this should be left alone, the government should pull their thumb out and do something to support smaller resthomes,” Margaret said. For many resthome residents, particularly those with no family in the area, residents and staff became their family, she said. “The staff here are marvellous. I don’t want to shift because I’m happy here. It’s the government that’s pushed me out and it’ll be a sad day walking out of here.”

ing with residents and staff on Thursday morning where Cameron Courts owners told them about the closure. They gave them every assurance there would be assistance in finding somewhere else to live and that no-one would be rushed or forced to make hasty decisions. “We will stay open until the last resident leaves,” Mani said. The closure was forced by declining resident numbers. Out of 30 beds only 10 are now occupied and numbers had been falling over the past two-and-a-half years, he said The couple bought Cameron Courts in 2010 and over the past
eight years aged care had changed, Mani said. More people were being supported to stay in their own homes and many who came into care being older and in failing health and required hospital rather than resthome beds. He also said the level of government support made it difficult for smaller resthomes to remain viable. In announcing the closure, Mani said he would always be grateful to the support the resthome had been given over the years from loyal staff, suppliers and service providers.
The work of volunteers, who had been regular visitors over many years, added immensely to the quality of life in the resthome, he said.
What happens now
Facility manager Harry Kaur and office manager Lyn Hurst are working with the CDHB to ensure the transition to new resthomes is as seamless as possible. Calls have been made to local facilities to find available bed numbers and calls have also been made on behalf of staff. If there was such a thing as good timing, this might be it as there
appeared to be beds available in some facilities, Kaur said. Each resident will be assessed by a CDHB assessor to ensure they are moving to an appropriate facility. With the resthome ticking all the boxes at its last audit, paperwork is up to date, but each patient file needs to be checked and signed off before they move. The first resident will move out on Wednesday. unsettling time for families and residents finding somewhere new, starting over. They were really happy here and thought this was their home forever.” When the closure was announced, seeing the shock on residents’ faces was heart-breaking, Kaur said. “Thursday was not an easy day.” She’s been facility manager for two-and-a-half years and said her team was highly skilled and highly valued.
“Seeing my team really upset is very hard. I’ve spoken with staff and said that while it will be a very, very difficult time for them we need to be there for residents, we can’t let our own emotions overpower us.” Lyn Hurst has been the smiling face behind the resthome reception desk for 12 years and since the closure was announced said she’s been struggling to hold back her tears. She’s putting on a brave face for
residents and their families. “Our main concern is the residents and it’s our job to try and put a smile on their faces,” she said. There’s one happy note in the Cameron Courts closure, it’s that resident moggy Monty has already found a new home, with manager Harry.

Since she heard Cameron Courts was closing Janet Olds admits tears have been pretty close to the
surface. She joined the team as a registered nurse in 1991 and later became its clinical nurse manager. She remembers the resthome as a busy and vibrant place, one where every bed was full and there was often a waiting list. The resthome had played a valuable role in the district’s aged care and knowing it would close was heart-breaking she said. In its early days it was known as Eventide home, run by the Presbyterian Church. Then it was much smaller and was generally a home for women only. Often those women were quite able, Janet said, but had decided they did not want to live alone. There were stories told of women knocking on the door, suitcase in hand, saying they were ready to move in. That was before the days of assessors and criteria around who qualified for a resthome bed and who did not. Janet retired four-and-a-half years ago and said the sector
was already changing then, with people not coming into care until they were much older and in much poorer health. “And today there are a lot more options for older people with villas, assisted living and people are looking for ensuites today. Usually it’s younger people choosing a facility for their parents and that’s their expectation,” she said. As a care facility Cameron Courts was unique, Janet said, in that it retained a homely feel and the building itself had immense character. Wooden panelling in the entrance hall and an old grandfather clock tell of the facility’s past as a family home. An extension was added many years ago, built with funds from three Cameron sisters. In spite of its growth to accommodate 30 residents, the nature of the building meant it still retained the family-home feel, Janet said. “I did 28 years there and it’s quite sad to see it closing. I just hope the building can be used for something in the future.”

Isis bride flees Terrified Shamima Begum and her baby yesterday fled their refugee camp in Syria after receiving death threats. The Isis bride was bundled away to another squalid base after a price was put on her head. Other jihadi wives believe she has disgraced their cause by bleating about her plight – and they have vowed to kill her. The 19-year-old has given a series of interviews moaning about her treatment from the Al-Hol camp in northern Syria. But she is now cowering in fear of reprisals and has been switched under cover of night to the Al-Roj refugee base nearer the Iraqi border. She has taken her week-old son Jerah – named after a 7th century Islamic warlord – with her. A source told The Sun: “Shamima was threatened directly in the camp. “She is living in fear of her life. There is a bounty on her head. “She felt she had no option but to move her and her child to have a chance of survival. “Shamima has become something of a celebrity and is constantly looking over her shoulder, fearing brutal reprisals for daring to speak out about life with Isis. “She’s in misery, but only has herself to blame.” Last week, Begum boasted about being given a plush tent in the makeshift refugee hub because she’s “famous”. But she upset religious hardliners who scorned her for appearing on TV without covering her face in line with extreme Islamic law. The teen, who was stripped of her British citizenship, showed no remorse for ditching East London at 15 to join up with the brutal Isis death cult. Her father has condemned her for not disavowing what Isis has done – saying he is “on the side of the Government” for banning her from

sition from critics who argue she should be brought back to London and put on trial. He revoked Begum’s British citizenship in a move only permissible under international law if it does not leave the individual stateless. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn sparked scorn by arguing she should be welcomed back to the UK, believing she could be deradicalised. Shamima Begum’s lawyer Tasnime Akunjee told The Sun: “I can confirm that it is our understanding that Shamima has been moved from Al-Hol due to safety concerns around her and her baby. “We further understand that indeed she and her child had been threatened by others at the Al-Hol camp.” - PA

Not giving evidence hurt Pell Convicted paedophile George Pell’s decision not to testify during his trial for child sex crimes could have cost him the case, according to experienced criminal lawyers. Several senior counsel, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told The Australian Pell testifying would have provided the best chance of convincing a jury the allegations
were without merit. “Not giving evidence has the potential to hurt you,” one silk told the newspaper. On the advice of his legal team, Pell chose not to take the witness stand, which meant the jury’s only glimpse of his reaction to the crisis enveloping him was his recorded 2016 interview with Australian police in Rome, Italy.
He was convicted in December of raping one choirboy in Melbourne’s St Patrick’s Cathedral and molesting another in 1996. But his guilty verdict wasn’t made public until Tuesday after a second trial was abandoned and months of secrecy surrounding the case. He will return to court for sentencing on March 13.
Now police video of Pell’s interview with Victorian detectives in Rome over the historic sexual abuse has been made public for the first time. In the interview, detectives showed Pell pictures of his victims. He claimed to not know “any kids in the choir” in 1996 before urging the investigators not to press charges. - AAP
Meryl’s a grandmother Meryl Streep has become a grandmother for the first time after her daughter welcomed a baby boy. Actress Mamie Gummer gave birth to a little boy, who she has with her husband Mehar Sethi, Us Weekly reports. At the time of writing, no other details are known about the baby’s date of birth or weight. Meryl had previously confessed she is proud her daughters pursued acting careers as she knows that living up to her own success and achievements is a “burden” for Gracie and Mamie.

‘Heart full of scorpions’ A Texas inmate was executed yesterday for the killings nearly 30 years ago of his estranged wife’s parents and her brother, who was a police officer. Billie Wayne Coble received lethal injection at the state penitentiary in Huntsville for the August 1989 shooting deaths of Robert and Zelda Vicha and their son, Bobby Vicha, at separate homes in Axtell, northeast of Waco. Coble, 70, once described by a prosecutor as having “a heart full of scorpions,” was the oldest inmate executed by Texas since the state resumed carrying out capital punishment in 1982. Asked to make a final statement, Coble replied: “That’ll be $5.” He told the five witnesses he selected to be in attendance that he loved them, then again said: “That’ll be $5.” Coble nodded to the witnesses and added, “take care.” He gasped several times and began snoring. As Coble was finishing his statement, his son, a friend and a daughter-in-law became emotional and violent. They were yelling obscenities, throwing fists and kicking at others in the death chamber witness area. Officers stepped in and the witnesses continued to resist. They were eventually moved to a courtyard and the two men were handcuffed. “Why are you doing this?” the woman asked. “They just killed his daddy.” While the witnesses were being subdued outside, the single dose of pentobarbital was being administered to Coble. He was pronounced dead 11 minutes later at 6.24pm. Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesman Jeremy Desel said the two men were arrested on a charge of resisting arrest and taken to the Walker County Jail. The US Supreme Court had earlier turned down Coble’s re-

Trouble for Trump It’s not Russia. It’s the money. That was the message Michael Cohen conveyed in his testimony to Congress. Donald Trump’s former lawyer, confidante and fixer threw a long list of accusations at the President, and most of them had nothing to do with Russian collusion. Cohen did claim to have overheard a conversation between Trump and Roger Stone which, if true, would prove the President had advance knowledge of Wikileaks’ plan to release emails to damage Hillary Clinton’s campaign. Both Trump and Stone have denied ever discussing Wikileaks. - AP

His attorneys had told the high court that Coble’s original trial lawyers were negligent for conceding his guilt by failing to present an insanity defense before a jury convicted him of capital murder. A state appeals court had previously rejected Coble’s request to delay the execution and the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles turned down his request for a commutation. Coble “does not deny that he bears responsibility for the victims’ loss of life, but he nonetheless wanted his lawyers to present a defence on his behalf,” his attorney, A. Richard Ellis, said in his appeal to the Supreme Court.
In Coble’s clemency petition to the Board of Pardons and Paroles, Ellis said his client suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder stemming from his time as a Marine during the Vietnam War and was convicted, in part, due to misleading testimony from two prosecution expert witnesses on whether he would be a future danger. Coble was the third inmate put to death this year in the US and the second in Texas, the nation’s busiest capital punishment state. Coble was convicted of capital murder in 1990. In 2007, the 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals ordered a new trial on punishment. On retrial in 2008, a second
jury sentenced him to death. Crawford Long, the former first assistant district attorney in McLennan County who helped retry Coble in 2008, said his “heart full of scorpions” description of Coble was fitting. “He had no remorse at all,” said Long, who retired in 2010. J.R. Vicha, 40, still lives in the Waco area. He eventually became a prosecutor for eight years, a career choice inspired in part by his father, who was a police sergeant in Waco when he was killed. His grandfather was a retired plumber and his grandmother worked for a foot doctor. Vicha is now a private practice lawyer. - AP

Events need your support to succeed W
hat started as a few ducks floating down Mill Creek on a Friday night as a bit of entertainment over a decade ago is now one of the Ashburton District’s most popular annual events. And what the team at Hokonui Radio. and their combined partners at the now Phat Duck Brew Bar and Bistro, have done with that little event is quite remarkable. There are so many reasons why the prospect of more than a 100 ducks floating down a creek shouldn’t excite the soul, but for some reason this once-a-year event seems to draw people from all corners of the Ashburton District together for a night of entertainment.

Yes, there’s some money to be made – but there’s almost a guarantee of more money being given out and the enjoyment the hundreds of people get from the night makes everything else insignificant. Last night’s edition of the event will have been no different. I’m writing this editorial less than an hour out from the start of the event and it’s all anyone
has wanted to talk to me about all day in and around the Ashburton CBD. For weeks most have been trying their best to get their hands on one of the coveted 110 ducks who took to the waters, but, for the majority, it was mission unsuccessful, however, their support of the event never wavered. Plaudits must go to the hard working team behind the whole event; Carol, Mel, Hoops, Peter Mac and Nigel and Amanda Joyce – their passion for seeing the event succeed is what ultimately makes it succeed and without their dedication a hugely successful and popular event on the district calendar each year would disappear.
We’re bloody lucky here really when you think about it. There are some truly remarkable people about who throw their time into something which is for the benefit of others. Look at the hard-working team who will tomorrow bring you Children’s Day – a must-attend event if you have a young child at home. That’s all powered by volunteer hours and done with no expectation of reward for their efforts and time. The same is true with the Mt Hutt Open Day which is on today. Mt Hutt doesn’t need to open its gates to anyone at this time of the year and the Methven Lions certainly don’t need to lend their
hand to it either. Sure, profits raised go directly back into the Methven community, but again, their time and generosity is largely for the benefit of everyone else, as opposed to themselves. It’s too late for the duck race – duck hunting is just around the corner though, so they’re back in hiding for another 12 months. But everyone should be looking to get out this weekend and support these other awesome events which make us unique. Because the moment we stop lending our support to such events, it will also be the moment that people start wondering why they are giving up their valuable time for something no-one attends.

Contentious capital gains tax O
nce again, the latest proposal for a capital gains tax (CGT) causes contention, controversy and conflict. Was there ever a political issue that generated such fevered dissension and angry disagreement? I suppose another, capital, (punishment) might once have been considered in the same category, but these days, with that divisive matter long since resolved, the capital gains conundrum remains to challenge the sensitivities of politicians and people alike. The fact is, this measure has been under a sometimes flickering spotlight for many years, with the verdict almost always being that it’s “not worth the paper it’s written on“, requires an army of civil servants to enforce it and, in the process, alienates more potential voters than it attracts. The fact that a form of CGT is currently in operation in South Africa does nothing in particular to make it more appealing to those of us in Aotearoa, New Zealand. What’s more, and surely significant the present Labour Party – the major stakeholder in the creaky coalition by which we have the misfortune to be governed – actually removed the CGT from its election manifesto in 2017 deciding, unsurprisingly,

it would be much more likely to be a vote loser than winner. Sir Michael Cullen can continue to bleat on coarsely about the rich pricks but the ladies and gentlemen so described are not amused. Sir Michael’s tax working group – set up specifically to advise on the re-introduction of CGT – wasn’t even unanimous in its verdict. However, the always-smiling, PM Jacinda, in her thoroughly disarming manner, has, at once, gone into reassurance mode, telling us the CGT is yet, if ever, to be cast in stone and added to the statutes book. So that’s all right then, we can sleep easily in our beds and be certain not to awake to find a CGT has somehow been added to that same statute book in the dark reaches of the night. I guess that is some consolation.
The man most likely to benefit from even the threat of a CGT could be none other than the old fox himself, the Right Honourable Winston Peters, current and past Minister of Foreign Affairs and minister of sundry other departments during his astonishing political career. As usual, at about this stage of the electoral cycle, NZ First is well below the qualifying bottom line for any sort of representation in the post 2020 election. However, Winston’s wellknown aversion to a capital gains tax may be a clarion cry to those suffering from the same antipathy, thus bringing him the precious votes he will need to burst through the five per cent barrier, and, once more, find himself the chief influencer, the go-to man for all and any decisions generated by the precarious coalition. Peters remains, still, a hard man to write off. He may even have deep-seated plans to capture an electorate seat! Meanwhile, Simon Bridges’ vehement rejection of any suggestion of a CGT as, “an attack on the Kiwi way of life” will, I fear, have done little to enhance his standing in the polls. Such a tax may well have a considerable effect on a multi home-owner such as the leader of the National Party, as well as on some of his colleagues. (Amy

However, as might have crossed his mind before he launched into this outburst of righteous indignation, most of us struggle along in the one home we possess and seldom think of those who have more than a single address. Thus the CGT may well be “an attack” on Simon’s – and Amy’s – way of life, but not on ours. Bridges has this unfortunate tendency to overreact to news that he might prefer not to hear, when a pause, followed by a slightly more considered opinion, might be very much to his advantage. Although, in the longer term, the capital gains tax may well be ditched or shelved, it seems more than likely that by that day Simon Bridges may also be and thus no more the leader of the National Party. The late, great, David Lange once wisely observed, “A capital gains tax will not only lose you the election you are currently fighting but also the next three”! Jetstar unveils fares for $25 and Nelson. “Whether it’s visiting family and friends or exploring somewhere new in New Zealand, this is a chance for Kiwis to grab a really small fare in a really big sale,” Larritt said. This move also comes off the back of Jetstar reiterating its pledge to beat any fares by a competing airline on a similar flight by 10 per cent – meaning that astute deal hunters could get an even better deal than the prices promoted by the likes of Air New Zealand or third-party flight search sites. In addition to the shake-up of regional flight pricing, Kiwi travellers also got some good news on the international front this week, with the announcement that Air Canada would be operating a seasonal direct route between Auckland and Canada. The flights on Air Canada will operate out of Auckland on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. A special introductory deal sees the fares selling as low as CDN$1387 (NZ$1541) for a round-trip. – NZME
Jetstar has struck back at Air New Zealand’s pricing shake-up by slashing its own fares – offering 75,000 domestic flights for just $25. The airline is offering a range of cheap fares from March 1-8 to destinations around the country. This promotion comes in the same week that Air New Zealand announced its biggest pricing shake-up in a decade. Earlier this week, the national carrier confirmed that it would offer 750,000 seats a year for less than $50 each. Jetstar’s response yesterday set the stage for an all-out price war between the two airlines – with customers the big winners. “We’ve been the low fares leader for domestic fares in New Zealand for nearly a decade,” Jetstar chief customer officer Catriona Larritt said. “Last year we sold nearly 600,000 domestic fares for under $50.” Flights included in the latest Jetstar promotion include $25 fares between Christchurch and Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch, and Wellington

Zoomy also takes a smaller clip of the ticket (15 per cent to Uber’s 25 to 28 per cent), though the fact it makes less use of surge pricing also means a smaller ticket to clip. Zoomy chairman Ben Unger says, “When we first designed the Zoomy app we put in functionality for tipping. We never switched it on. We got so many observations

Uber’s new option to tip a driver – introduced to Australia and New Zealand this week – sparked immediate conspiracy theories on social media. There was suspicion that Uber would clip the ticket on a tip. An Uber spokeswoman says “100 per cent of the tip goes to the driver.” And many expressed the fear that they would get a bad passenger rating if they failed to tip, or tipped low (at the end of a ride, the passenger and driver rate each other out of five stars). And a link to an Uber driver discussion group in Australia has been been shared on Twitter, featuring a thread where one participant suggests a passenger’s star rating be tied to how much they tip (the new tipping option lets you click to give the driver $1, $2, $3 or a custom amount up to $50). A $1 tip should earn one star, the poster says, a $2 tip two stars and so on. Uber’s spokeswoman says a driver can, in theory, see whether a passenger has tipped before giving them a star rating, but she says what happens in practice is that “a driver usually gives a passenger a rating immediately they finish a ride so they can get on to the next trip, while a passenger usually doesn’t rate [or, now, tip] for 15 to 20 minutes – or only when they’re prompted when they next open the app.” There’s a 30-day window to leave a tip – so unlike when you’re at the till in an uncomfortable transaction with a restaurant cashier, your Uber driver won’t know if you’re being cheap or might deliver a $5

The Mid Canterbury Junior Graded Tournament got under way at the tennis centre last night and will continue today, meaning a rare venture away from the home of Mid Canterbury Tennis

for the senior club sides. In A grade action today, top-ofthe-table Tinwald and Allenton find themselves on the most foreign ground, literally. They’re trading in the plexipave of the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre for the grass courts at the Allenton Tennis Club, while the A reserve clash between the Allenton Kakapos and Southern/Wakanui will be played on
Allenton’s hard courts. The Hampstead Tennis Club will host the day’s remaining A grade fixtures, with Fairton taking on Southern and Hampstead taking on Methven. There’s no junior interclub competition this weekend, with the juniors instead battling it out at the graded tournament. The tournament – which covers junior A, junior B and junior
C – has attracted 56 entries, with the biggest field being in the junior B boys’ singles where there’s 15 entries. There’s 11 entries in the junior A boys’ singles and 10 in the junior C girls’ singles. For all three grades the doubles will be mixed, allowing for combinations who play together on a Saturday to also play together in the tournament.

Centres of attention The battle between a yoga-loving, mullet-wearing Crusader and Ballymore’s new “wonderkid” will take centre stage when Queensland host the two-time defending Super Rugby champions tonight. Jordan Petaia’s performance as an 18-year-old in the centres was the talking point of the Reds’ tight loss to the Highlanders last weekend. But he will meet his match in opposing No.13 Jack Goodhue, who at 23 has already established himself as one of the world’s best outside centres. New Zealand Rugby CEO Steve Tew has rejected any claims a decision has been made on the future format of international rugby. World Rugby has been negotiating the establishment of a World League involving 12 nations who will play each other every non-World Cup year. The world’s best players quickly reacted to the plans by listing their worries, including the freezing out once more of Pacific Island nations. But yesterday, Tew said nothing had been agreed and insisted any plans must include a pathway for the Pacific Islands nations and others. In brief Rowers swarm on lake Top junior rowers from all around the South Island are set to call Mid Canterbury home this weekend, with Lake Hood playing host to the Canterbury Junior Regatta. Racing gets under way at 7.30am this morning with the boys’ under-17 single the first event to hit the water, and racing will run through until around 4pm tomorrow – weather permitting. Ambrose won’t be back He felt “right at home” back on track at the Supercars opening round in Adelaide but former champion Marcos Ambrose has hosed down comeback plans. Two-time series winner Ambrose admitted he loved getting behind the wheel for special presentation laps of a NASCAR Ford Mustang on the Adelaide street circuit on Thursday. It marked the first time Ambrose had hit the track since abruptly ending his career in 2015. Ambrose proved a hit with fans and couldn’t wipe the smile off his face when he jumped out of the Mustang, prompting speculation the veteran may be warming up for a fully fledged return. - AAP

McLaughlin tops Supercars practice Defending series champion Kiwi driver Scott McLaughlin has hit back to finish fastest at practice ahead of qualifying for the Supercars opening round in Adelaide. The Ford gun appeared to begin the day behind the eight ball after experiencing power steering problems in his new Mustang at Thursday’s practice, finishing a distant 12th. But McLaughlin’s garage worked overtime to ensure the Kiwi came out swinging early yesterday. He topped the practice session ahead of Holden rivals Jamie Whincup and Shane van Gisbergen in a lap time of one minute, 20.39 seconds. He left it until the last moment of the 30-minute session to finish 0.15 of a second ahead of seven-time series champion Whincup. Just half a second separated the top six drivers on the 24-strong grid. Whincup’s Holden team-mate van Gisbergen is aiming to become the first driver to win five straight races on Adelaide’s tough street circuit. All eyes are also on the Mustangs which have replaced Falcons in all six Ford teams this season. It marks the first time since 1990 Mustangs have been sighted on the grid. Temperatures were expected to be sweltering 40 degrees, reaching up to 70 degrees in the cars. A 250km race will be held today and another one tomorrow. - AAP

Final berths wide open Just who will feature in the 2018/19 Mid Canterbury Cricket Muirhead Rosebowl final will be known in a few hours’ time. Right now, which teams will book those spots is anyone’s guess, after a final round which featured surprise form and a surprise result. The surprise form at the right time of the season is Methven’s, but the team they’ll face in today’s semi-finals is the team that picked up the surprise result last weekend. Lauriston head into today’s semi-finals as the team to beat, having finished top of the leaderboard thanks to a four wicket win last week over the team that has been the form team for most of the season, the Tech Stags. The result saw Lauriston leapfrog Tech to take top spot and set up a semi-final clash with their neighbours Methven. Methven will head to Lauriston today with a bit of confidence, despite having lost their match to Coldstream last weekend. Just a few weeks ago they had to default due to a lack of players, and two weeks ago they were rolled for just 40 by the Stags. But on Saturday in the final round against Coldstream, Methven notched up 199, with Davey Maw anchoring the innings with a well-made 95. It wasn’t enough for them to beat Coldstream, but if Maw can repeat his antics today opening the batting for Methven and get a bit of help from his friends down

Smith set for IPL Steve Smith has resumed batting in the nets, with Australia coach Justin Langer expecting the sacked skipper and David Warner to be fit for the start of the Indian Premier League later this month. Smith and Warner have entered the final month of the year-long bans they are serving as part of Cricket Australia’s response to the Cape Town cheating scandal. The suspended superstars both underwent elbow surgery in January but have since been making steady progress in their respective recoveries. - AAP
Patience over Finch Justin Langer has lauded Aaron Finch’s leadership and declared Australia will be patient as their captain attempts to end a worrying whiteball slump. Finch scored eight in the second Twenty20 against India, after a golden duck in the tour opener, to make it 19 consecutive white-ball international innings without reaching 50. Finch’s form is far from ideal given the World Cup starts in approximately three months. Black Caps on a massive run-fest By Niall aNdersoN As Jeet Raval and Tom Latham went about compiling New Zealand’s biggest opening partnership in 47 years, you could be forgiven for wanting Bangladesh to be put out of their misery. Fortunately for the Black Caps, fans of records, and, well, masochists, there’s still three days to go in the first test at Seddon Park, and on the basis of yesterday’s utter dominance, a lot more to celebrate in store for New Zealand. Nobody would have more reason for celebration than Jeet Raval, who reached his first century in his 17th test with an excellent innings as the Black Caps flew to 451-4 at stumps, a lead of 217 runs. While his spot at the top of the order had never been under real threat due to a series of solid scores, Raval was eager to break his three-figure duck, and he did so in style, barely offering a chance, and bringing up his century with stellar back-to-back boundaries. It was perhaps a less memorable innings for Tom Latham, which is
only a ridiculous indication of his incredible form. For the third time in three months, Latham reached 150, as part of a partnership that flew past Bangladesh’s first innings of 234 without being broken. Bangladesh’s seamers – largely unused in subcontinent conditions and with no experience in New Zealand conditions – never looked likely, having now failed to claim a wicket in their combined 66 overs of toil. For a while, they tried to emu-
late Neil Wagner’s success on day one, digging deliveries in short, but with Raval expertly judging the bounce, and Latham cruising past 3000 test runs, the scoreboard never stopped ticking over. Resuming the day at 86-0, the pair cruised through the first session; Latham blasting the spinners into the seats, while Raval carved a favoured zone through mid-wicket and the covers. It was the fifth time two New Zealand openers had scored a century in the same innings, and their contributions led to New Zealand’s best opening stand since 1972. And when Mahmudullah – in his only over of the day – finally broke the stand after 69.5 overs, Williamson – having sat watching in his pads for over six hours – simply added to Bangladesh’s woes. Only Ross Taylor – trapped lbw by Soumya for four – missed out on the fun, with Henry Nicholls hitting 53 in a century stand with Williamson, and putting New Zealand’s biggest total in test history – 690 – under threat as more runs loom today. - NZME

Johnson ready to unleash John Morris has promised to unleash star recruit Shaun Johnson as he looks to inject some razzle-dazzle into a Cronulla side renowned for its toughness and defensive grit. The 38-year-old rookie coach has taken on one of the toughest jobs in the NRL after he was handed the reigns following Shane Flanagan’s deregistration. While questions remains about his ability to maintain the standard of success which the club enjoyed for much of Flanagan’s tenure, Morris is not harbouring any fears and promises an entertaining brand of football from his side. He says not only should the Sharks be aspiring to finish top four, he wants them to chance their arm and play with their eyes up. And most of that centres around Johnson, who was signed following Valentine Holmes’ decision to pursue an NFL career. The Sharks have two of the game’s best offloaders in their pack in Andrew Fifita and Aaron Woods, and he says to expect Johnson and fullback Matt Moylan to be seen sniffing around the ruck. As well, Johnson will be given licence to play on both sides of the field and pop up wherever he thinks there is an opportunity. “There’s a defensive structure

“It doesn’t mean they can’t go either side. They’re both capable of it. “That’s one thing I’ve got to keep developing as a coach, keeping that mindset not to pigeonhole guys into one set position, being able to adapt and play in different parts of the field.”
The Sharks have been stung in the off-season by controversies surrounding Flanagan and their salary cap. Flanagan has been told he is unlikely to be registered to return to the game anytime soon after communicating with club officials in violation of his 2014 ban over the club’s peptides scandal. The club has also been fined $500,000. The Sharks were also fined $250,000 for salary cap breaches and have had $353,000 shaved off their salary cap for 2019 and 2020. However they still boast a roster capable of pushing for finals contention. This year once more shapes as a season of regeneration for the Sharks with Luke Lewis having hung up his boots and Paul Gallen to bow out at the end of the year. Back-rower and Junior Kiwis representative Briton Nikora is knocking on the door and young gun Bronson Xerri looks set to debut on the wing as early as round one. Jack Williams is set to be groomed as Gallen’s successor in the Sharks engine room, while Blayke Brailey looks set to put pressure on his brother Jayden for the starting hooker spot. “He’s off contract and someone we’re going to try real hard to keep,” Morris said. - AAP

Coll, King knocked out Top Kiwi players Joelle King and Paul Coll are out of the PSA World Squash Championships. They were both beaten in their quarter-finals in Chicago yesterday. King, the Commonwealth Games champion, lost to Frenchwoman Camille Serme in straight games 11-7, 11-8 and 11-4 in 37 minutes. A high over the Tasman Sea extends a strong ridge over the country. The ridge remains over much of New Zealand during the forecast period. However, a north to northwest flow strengthens over the South Island later on Monday ahead of a front that approaches the far south from the Tasman Sea.
