’APPY BIRTHDAY! Dear reader and advertiser, I’d like to tell you what we’ve been up to recently. It might sound like a bit of a brag, but hey, I’m very proud of how we’re transforming our business, and you, our reader and advertiser, are a very important part of the journey. One year ago today we launched Ashburton App. Now that mightn’t sound like much of a big deal, but what’s blown us away has been more than 10,000 have downloaded Ashburton App to their smart phones in just 12 months. There are 23,000 adult smartphone users in the Ashburton District, so 40 per cent have already installed Ashburton App on their smart phones.

These apps are a big part of our future. In May we launched Selwyn App and more than 3700 have so far downloaded it to their smartphones. In the next few months we’ll launch an app in the South Canterbury District, and maybe a rural app too. And then there’s The Guardian. Old faithful. An integral part of the Ashburton District for nearly 140 years. Yes, September 27, 2019 we celebrate another birthday, The Guardian turns 140. (The oldest surviving privately owned business in the Ashburton District). Oh, and did I mention Guardianonline, our facebook page with over 10,000 users, Guardian Farming, Dairy Focus and You magazine – blah, blah, blah. The list goes on. And then only

Bovis compensation ‘a minefield’

Ashburton farmer Frank Peters hopes he will not be out of pocket from Government compensation for farmers hit by mycoplasma bovis, but so many grey areas have him worried. The dairy farmer is owed nearly $2 million so far as a result of the cattle disease being found at Levelands Ltd, owned by him and his wife Diane and managed by their son and daughter-in-law. So far they have received about $820,000 in mid-July for 720 cows from his spring-calving herd which were sent off the farm in May. They also received $380,000 for the meat value of them from meat processing companies among other compensation paid out. In addition, they are owed about $450,000 for young stock, including 180 calves and 200 rising twoyear-olds. While that sounds a lot, the new herd of 700 cows they bought cost them $1.75m, plus another $300,000 was spent for another 160 cows to replace the 920 cows which were to be milked this spring. Furthermore, the Peters have yet to claim for their winter milking herd which won’t be culled until Christmas or their many response costs. They are also are still waiting to be reimbursed for the $100,000 killing charges of $100-$200 per cow which was removed from their cheque by meat processing companies. Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) has indicated that money should arrive next week. The Government is compensating farmers for their losses on infected properties as part of its plan to eradicate M. bovis. “They took [the killing charge] out of my money in May and we are in September now so there’s been a long wait,’’ Peters said. “It’s about understanding the system and we need to improve on the communication so things do change for the better.’’ After eventually learning that he had to send an invoice, it looks like this will be cleared up in a few days. Peters said he realised delays were the reality of working with a

Frank Peters big disease response which was new for everybody and compensation was complicated as every dairy farm was different. He said his family appreciated the compensation was from taxpayer money and they only wanted the promised “like-for-like’’ payment, so they were neither worse or better off than before. “Put it this way, we won’t be over-compensated. We just want what’s fair.’’ There was no value that could be placed on farmers going through the stress of the disease response and they could never be compensated for the emotional strain, he said. His winter milking herd would be “depopulated’’ at Christmas. Response costs would include moving feed, transporting cows and the cost of dividing the prop-

erty into two farms, such as putting in new fencing and gates and installing yards at the run-off block they lease. The winter herd has been enclosed at their 180ha Buckleys Road farm at Pendarves which has a 50-bale rotary milking shed and is still an infected property. When the herd is culled there will be a 60-day stand-down period and the property will have to be disinfected. Alongside it is the Chertsey-Kyle Road farm which is no longer infected and the Peters have already bought a herd for this property. A run-off block at Hakataramea Huts is leased and should come off a restricted property category in September. Peters said he would probably end up having one of the lowest response costs for an infected farm. This was because they had

avoided compensation for lost milk earnings as they had two milking sheds and could split their operation into two farms. Their spring herd had been dried off before it was culled so there was no loss of earnings and they plan to do the same with their winter milking herd. He is unlikely to be fully compensated for the loss of his genetics. Other grey areas included having to buy younger cows producing fewer milksolids, delayed GST payments and the breeding value of their former herd not being fully recognised. Some of the grey areas were unlikely to be resolved until a season had passed, he said. His father started the springcalving herd in 1964 and began artificial insemination soon afterwards. The big holstein friesian cows had United States and Dutch bloodlines and the winter milkers averaged 550-600 kilograms of milksolids a year and the spring calving cows 520-540kg/ms under a high input feeding system. The single herd of 700 young cows aged 3 to 4-years-old which they bought will be pushed to do 450kg. They cost “way more’’ than the value he received for his cows and that will be another conversation with MPI. “There’s about $400 a cow difference, but we saved $100 in transport costs because we did not buy them in the North Island and because they are 3 to 4-year-olds we won’t be culling older cows so that has to be allowed for. It’s a minefield, but we are all open to talking and coming up with a good solution.’’ He did not want to buy small lines of 100 leftover cows and in-

crease the risk of getting the disease again and put a deposit down in April for a large herd, but then ran into more bad luck. “I tried to buy a like-for-like herd and thought I had done it perfectly, but then that went bovis on me and we found we couldn’t buy it in June. Finding another herd like that is like pulling teeth, so we had to settle for the 700 which were totally different-sized cows.’’ Market changes complicate the compensation process and heifer calf prices have increased to $1100 from the $850 value of his calves in June. Peters will seek compensation for the difference. They lost 180 calves during the culling and have only bought 100 replacements so far. “We can never be repaid for the emotional stress this puts us through. It’s great that the community has supported us and dropped off baskets of goodies and we can’t speak more highly of the Rural Support Trust. Only someone who has gone through this knows what it feels like and we are happy to talk to them.’’ Peters is one of about a dozen farmers who travel to Wellington to meet with MPI leaders about the response. The next update is September 21 and Peters wants farmers to pass their queries on to him. “They want the feedback. Hopefully by sitting down we can improve it, so the next day the disease comes along the farmer can avoid the sheer hell. It will never take it away but it will make the process more user friendly.’’ MPI has yet to confirm the source of their infection on their farm, even though they have operated a closed herd with no outside bloodlines for the past three years.

Fonterra’s pruning of its milk price forecast for this season to $6.75 a kilogram of milksolids has come as no surprise to Mid Canterbury farmers. There will be no less disappointment though as the drop by 25c/kg from an expected $7/kg in May will remove about $80,000 from their revenue for the 201819 season. Nationally, farmers will lose about $40,000, but Mid Canterbury farmers have larger herds and produce more milksolids so on average they will miss out on double that amount. Economists were picking a lower forecast payout in the lead-up to the cut because of lower milk prices internationally and farmers had braced themselves for a reduction to the promising starting forecast. Fonterra chairman John Monaghan said the change was in response to stronger milk supply signals coming from some of the world’s key dairy producing regions. “Over the past quarter, we have seen increased milk supply out of markets including Europe, the United States and Argentina. These regions have a big influence on the supply and demand balance and therefore global prices. “For example, the one per cent increase in US milk production represents just under 100 million litres of extra milk.’’ Demand for whole milk powder and dairy fats was also showing signs of slowing in some parts of Asia, Africa and the

Middle East, he said. Chief executive Miles Hurrell, said the weakening dollar against the United States currency had only partially offset the decline in global dairy prices, and it was important to give farmers a realistic assessment of the market. “It’s still very early in the season and a lot can change over the coming months. A drop in the new season milk price forecast will be frustrating to our farmers, but it’s important we give them the facts so they can make informed decisions in their farming businesses,” Hurrell said. The latest cut comes on the back of a 5 cents/kg adjustment announced on August 10 by the co-operative for the soon to be confirmed final milk price for the 2017-18 season. That cost farmers nationally $8000 and Mid Canterbury farmers about $16,500 and was expected to drain $10 million from the Mid Canterbury economy. The average milk solid production for Mid Canterbury farms is 329,000kg and herd size is 760 cows. Fonterra also ruled out paying a dividend for the second half of the year with the full dividend to remain at 10 cents and advised its share earnings would either be at the 25-30 cent range or slightly below. Fonterra made the tough calls to tighten its 2017-18 balance sheet after earlier this year writing down more than $400m from its $750m investment in Beingmate, and last year paying $183m to infant formula maker Danone for the botulism scare in 2013.

The Ashburton CBD was all decked out in yellow yesterday, in a united show of support for local victims of cancer. Volunteers for the Cancer Society were out on the streets hanging bunting and balloons from 8am, then setting up stalls to collect money and sell merchandise. The cold, rainy weather was no deterrent, with some tucking up just inside of businesses like the Somerset Grocer. Daffodil Day donations were also being taken online and at

26-day Nepal hike whets 78-yea When Bill Hood was a young man he started running to get fit for climbing. Decades later he’s swapped running for race walking and climbing for extreme trekking. The 78-yearold talks to Sue Newman about his latest adventure, a 26-day hike in Nepal.

f you want a lesson in making the most of life, talk to Bill Hood. He might be knocking 78, he might have a couple of artificial knees, an artificial hip and a few other bits of his body that don’t work like they used to, but that doesn’t stop him doing what people half his age would never do. Bill’s not long back from a gruelling 26-day trek in Nepal and already he’s planning his next longhaul hike, probably in Bhutan. He was a member of a sevenman, five-guide, 27-porter team that hiked through harsh terrain to complete Nepal’s Kachenjunga Circuit, a route that ends at Mt Kachenjunga’s base camp. This mountain is the second highest in the Himalayas and the third highest in the world, but even

though mountaineering has been the Ashburton man’s first love, climbing the peak wasn’t on his agenda. There have to be some concessions to age, he said. For years Bill has dreamed of travelling to Nepal but it’s been Kachenjunga, not Everest, on the must-do list. The world’s highest peak has now become too busy and too commercial, whereas Kachenjunga attracts only small numbers and that’s more his style, Bill said. It might not have been Everest, but 26 days of steady climbing was no easy feat. “Our trip was different to Everest. We took absolutely everything in with us, carried by the porters on their backs with headbands bearing the weight.” And that included food that Bill rated as some of the worst he’s eaten. The team eased into the trek, with a couple of shorter days so they didn’t hammer their bodies at the start, but as the days became longer and the altitude higher, there were blood tests for oxygen levels each night along with resting pulse rate checks. Two camps from completing the trek, Bill ran into trouble. “I had a bit of a lung issue, so I had to

Right – Villages and camps along the Kachenjunga Circuit. go back to the next town and wait it out for a couple of days.” It wasn’t ideal watching the rest of the team move on, but today, Bill counts himself fortunate he was forced to change route just two stops from base camp. He opted to travel back to Kambachen with a guide to rest. Two days later he was fit and raring to go. And the next seven days turned out to be some of the best of the trip, Bill said. “We were amongst the Tibetan people and more than anything they made this trip. I stayed in their villages. They’re wonderful people, they’re very much in harmony with each other and very much part of their ecology.” In a society that reveres the elderly, Bill said he was looked after very well because they considered he was an older person. “At night I’d be sitting there, within a metre of campfires with village families.” Yes, there was disappointment

in not making it all the way to base camp, but the upside was being able to spend time with and interact with locals. “If that hadn’t happened, I’d never have had that opportunity.” As trampers and climbers have opened their world up to the west, the locals’ health has improved tremendously, he said, but with that has come a population explosion as infant mortality rates dropped. “And unfortunately they’re pushing roads in everywhere, tourism is coming,” he said. Turning back didn’t mean the hard slog was over as Bill and his guide took an arduous route on what turned out to be a religious pilgrimage into a temple before re-joining the trek team on its way home. “And I have to say I was feeling pretty good at the finish.” While the trek was 26 days, it wasn’t as hard as some of the climbing he’s done in New Zealand.

“There was bugger all danger in this and only a bit of snow higher up.” The trek was everything Bill had hoped it would be, but rather than satisfying his desire for challenge, it’s only whet his appetite for more. Making it on to the trekking team wasn’t automatic and given Bill’s age, he had to provide a wealth of information about his health. Seventy-year-olds were not normally accepted for the trek, but Bill’s high level of fitness meant he was not only accepted, he kept up with the youngsters in the team. “To me age, I don’t think about, it’s just a number.” Back home, Bill hasn’t been taking it easy. He may no longer scale New Zealand’s highest peaks and he no longer pounds the roads as a harrier, but he’s a competitive fast walker and cyclist. “I can’t afford to slacken off, it wouldn’t be in my psyche to do that anyway.” There’s another trek out there just waiting to be conquered.

Ashburton’s Suffrage 125 Committee are preparing to paint the town purple and white for the upcoming anniversary of women achieving voting parity. The group of representatives from Age Concern, Zonta Club of Ashburton, Mid Canterbury Rural Women NZ, County Lions, Inner Wheel, Ashburton Museum and Age Concern gathered on Thursday to plan and prepare for a week of celebrations in September. Committee member Trish Small said the group are encouraging retailers around the district to display Suffrage 125 signs and decorations from Monday, September 17,

until the end of that week. On the Tuesday, at 5.30pm, the group have organised a Celebration Ceremony which will be held at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre and open to any members of the public, women and men. Guests will include Kate Sheppard Memorial Trust Advisory Committee chairwoman Judith Sutherland and a young local storywriter, Freya Jemmett, who won a category of the Ashburton Writers’ Group Short Story Contest with her piece on Kate’s Sheppard’s Dream for the 21st Century. Spaces are limited and can be reserved by ringing the Ashburton Museum. The following day, there will be a

memorial walk from the Cenotaph at Baring Square west to the Ashburton Domain, led by four pipers. It will conclude with the planting of a Kate Sheppard rose, with

help from students from Mount Hutt College and Ashburton College. People attending are encouraged to dress in purple and white.

Reluctantly she and her friends have launched a public fundraising appeal to help bridge the funding gap.

ne year ago mum of one, Nina Arps was like most other women her age – fit, healthy, loving life and cramming as much as she could into every day. Today Nina Arps is sick, so sick that she’s been told there is nothing more the medical profession can do for her, that she needs to enjoy whatever time she has left. Nina has cancer. It’s in her bowel and in her liver. She’s been down every treatment path available in New Zealand and the experts have told her they’ve exhausted her lifesaving options. Her cancer was diagnosed 10 months ago, but Nina refuses to accept there is nothing that can be done to improve her chances of survival. She’s discovered a lifeline, but it’s a lifeline that comes with a hefty price tag, around $80,000 and it’s only available off-shore. Its results, however, are startling. “A friend had a similar cancer to mine and he went to this doctor in Bangkok and he’s now been cancer free for 10 years. “If I hadn’t known anyone who had had this treatment I wouldn’t even have thought about it, but I want to give this my best shot,” she said. To access the treatment she must travel to Bangkok and undergo four sessions over eight weeks in a large oncology clinic led by German specialist Florian Schilling. It’s her one shot at living and while it comes with no guarantees, it has clear successes and it does offer hope, Nina said. “Here in New Zealand they offer me the end of the line; overseas they offer me a chance, they’ve told me, today is not the time to give up.” But there’s the money hurdle to overcome. Nina and her friends have been doing everything they can to raise money for her treatment. They’re halfway there, but there’s still a huge $40,000 gap they’re not sure how to bridge. Reluctantly they’ve opted to launch a public appeal. What’s been given already has humbled Nina. She never wanted to ask and never expected money

I just hate the fact that this has all come down to money; I hate it that this treatment comes down to who can afford it; I hate having to put a price on my life.” Staying positive over the past 10 months would have been impossible without the support of friends, she said. “They’ve had to listen to me cry and cry; it’s been months of hell for them.” As she’s been through chemo, as she’s hit rock bottom, as she’s struggled to fund her treatment, her friends have always been there, Nina said. “I am just so lucky.” She’s been to Bangkok for a biopsy and she’s currently there having blood cells harvested as well as undergoing her first rounds of immunotherapy treatment. “It’s a targeted treatment. My biopsy’s been tested in Boston and they’ve used this information to create a unique profile treatment for me.”

The first visit to the clinic was reassuring. The clinic is very high tech and it’s a large and very professional set-up with big teams of specialists, she said. “That put to rest any fears that it was a hoax and they were just asking for money. They make sure the treatments are working and they’re more willing to buy in new drugs and to try things, whereas in New Zealand procedures are so restricted by protocols.” She knows there are no guarantees, says she’s got nothing to lose if it doesn’t work. Each trip to Bangkok means a friend has to take time off work, take time away from their family to travel with her. And it’s no holiday, Nina said. Most of the time is spent waiting or sitting in a hotel room while she rests. “I’m doing this for my nine-yearold son Rory. He’s been amazing through all of this. We don’t keep anything from him, but we don’t dwell on it, we try to keep his life as normal as possible.” Keeping life normal means Rory has friends at home and it means Nina goes to sporting and school events – when she can. “It’s good for me when I can be normal, can feel normal and do the normal things.” Damon has been a rock, but he carries too much inside, Nina said. She worries how he’s coping, who he talks to. She hopes he too has someone to lean on. Discovering that cancer had

been lurking in her body, possibly for several years, was devastating and its discovery a total shock. “I’d been okay but then I started getting a funny tummy. I went to my doctor and she gave me medication and said come back if it didn’t settle,” Nina said. It didn’t and she returned to her doctor. Bloods were taken, but neither she nor her doctor considered anything serious could be wrong. “I went back and she said my liver showed some high readings so I had a scan and they found lesions on my liver and then they found the primary cancer was in my bowel and yet I’d had no signs of anything being wrong.” Nina’s world shattered. Her first six months of chemotherapy shrunk her tumours, but a second round of treatments, designed to buy her time, saw them growing again and growing aggressively. Treatment stopped. “They said they’d done as much as they could and that I should go home and just enjoy life.” How do you do that with an untreatable cancer diagnosis hanging over your head? she said. The first couple of months were hideous and depression was her constant companion, but now, Nina says she feels she’s taking charge, she’s fighting back. Fighting back, however, takes money, and it’s money Nina does not have. But as much as she hates to ask she knows she

Hundreds of Mid Cantabrians put their brains to work for a good cause on Thursday night at the annual ANZ Daffodil Day quiz. Around 65 teams entered the ever popular event at Hotel Ashburton, which is supported by dozens of sponsors and last year earned a whopping $23,000 for the Cancer Society. The evening included entertainment, and even yodelling, from Dame Lynda Topp, in char-

acter as Ken, along with a raffle, auction and silent auction. Topp said she thought it was great that the money raised at the event was used locally. With the help of dozens of local sponsors the prize pool included items such as a 35 minute helicopter ride with Richie McCaw, a signed All Blacks jersey, luxury accommodation, meat packs, bluetooth speakers and hundreds of other items. A team called the Gloriavale Rejects were named as the winners.

Applications open for council funds Community groups with a focus on preserving or enhancing the districts biodiversity or heritage, or who have an arts focus could be in for a funding boost. Applications are now open for Ashburton District Council grants, for organisations involved in these areas. This is the second round of Biodiversity and Heritage grants for the year, and the

first round of Creative Communities Scheme funding. Chair of the council’s Grants and Funding Sub-committee Russell Ellis said the grants help to support a range of projects benefiting the district. “There are many dedicated groups in our community doing outstanding work to improve our natural and built environment, or

that provide cultural opportunities for our people. If your group has a project that aligns with this work, we’d like to hear from you,” he said. The council introduced a second round of funding for Biodiversity and Heritage in 2016, in recognition of the seasonal nature of these projects. Creative New Zealand provides

Creative Communities Scheme funding to councils across the country to distribute in their local communities. The scheme recognises the unique place of local arts projects and is assessed by a local committee who have an extensive background in the district’s varied arts community. These grants are to support artistic and cultural projects, in-

cluding theatre, dance, music, literature and performing arts. To apply for the grants, download and complete an application form on the council website and return it to council by email info@adc.govt.nz to the Council office, 5 Baring Square West, Ashburton. Moroccan lamb shanks Serves 4-5 4 Quality Mark lamb shanks 2 onions, chopped 5 cloves garlic, crushed 1T fresh ginger, finely grated 1T each ground coriander, turmeric and cumin 1t each white pepper and mixed spice 2C Campbell’s Real Stock – Beef 1/2 C tomato paste 1 x 400g can chopped tomatoes 3/4 C unsweetened yoghurt 1 carrot, finely chopped or grated Zest of 1 lemon 1C dried apricots 1 1/2 C couscous 1 1/2 C flaked almonds 1/2 C fresh coriander or parsley, roughly chopped ■ Preheat oven to 140°C conventional bake. ■ Bring lamb out of the fridge an hour before cooking. Cut through the tendon that connects the meat to the bone at the bottom of the shank – this will allow the meat to bunch up nicely. Brush the shanks with oil and season. ■ Heat a little oil in a large frying pan over a high heat. Sear the shanks, two at a time, to brown all over. Set aside in a large casserole dish with a lid. ■ Reduce the heat to medium, add a

little more oil to the pan along with the onion and cook, stirring for 5 minutes to soften. Add the garlic, ginger, spices and pepper and cook for another 2 minutes. Continue stirring so the spices don’t stick and burn. Turn up the heat, add the stock and tomato paste, bring to a rapid simmer and scrape up any bits of caramelised meat stuck to the bottom. Add the tomatoes, yoghurt, carrot, lemon zest and stir. Pour over the shanks, cover and cook in the oven for 3 1/2 to 4 hours. Add the apricots with 1 hour to go. Remove from the oven and gently remove the shanks from the sauce (careful as they will be very delicate) and set aside covered in foil. If the sauce needs thickening, transfer to a saucepan, add 1/4 C water mixed with 2t cornflour and simmer for 5-10 minutes until thickened. Cook according to packet directions. Just before serving, stir through half the almonds and herbs. Spoon some couscous on serving plates, top with a shank, ladle on sauce and sprinkle with remaining almonds and herbs – and a dash of extra yoghurt if you like. ’Appy birthday to the Ashburton app T

here’s always a fear when you try something new, that it might fail. But it’s the thrill of the unknown, the potential within and the possible windfalls of such decisions that can make life exciting. Today, one year ago, we – the Ashburton Guardian – took one of those risks. We jumped into the unknown and hoped like anything that we’d rise our heads above the water once things had settled down. We launched another subsidiary to our day-to-day business one year ago today, the Ashburton App. The app was a digital platform in which we could stretch our

capabilities further than they have ever been stretched before and we closed our eyes and took a leap not fully knowing what kind of landing there might be below us. Digital news platforms are the way of the future, there’s no doubt about it. And, while we might be doing everything in our power to stay true to the core values of the modern form of journalism with

a printed newspaper, the inevitable outcome lurks around every corner where newspapers die. Our job is to prolong that happening for as long as we can. And in order to do that, we needed to keep up with the market and the ever-changing world around us – and an app, which not only provides up-to-date news and happenings in the Ashburton District, it also provides essential information which anyone could use as their own information guide to the region, seemed the best way to do it. Our biggest hurdle was always probably going to be the district’s demographic. We are, traditionally, an older and rural orientated district – not your usual form for app users.

So, to reach more than 10,000 downloads in the first 12 months and effectively hold a reach of a close to a third of our population is a huge result for us and a justification in our decision to actually go ahead with the idea. What the addition of the app has given us is a remarkable platform in which we can deliver meaningful and impacting news to people at the push of a button. With everyone’s strong desire to know what’s going on around them, particularly when it comes to breaking news – the push notification ability within the app means we can let as many people as possible know about what’s happening in a fast and efficient manner with everyone receiving that information at

exactly the same time as everyone else. It’s pushed us as journalists further than we’ve been pushed for quite some time because it’s meant a completely new mindset around the process of delivering news, but it’s one we’ve enjoyed the thrill of and one we will continue to tweak and master as time progresses. So, to our little green machine that has, in just its first year, become such a major part of the Ashburton Guardian daily process, Happy Birthday. Don’t rest easy though, the work is nowhere near being complete and it’s our goal to go even bigger and even better in the next 12 months, to continue to use the app to its full potential.

Jacinda has got it wrong P

rime Minister Jacinda Ardern is barking up the wrong tree. She wants to be known simply as the leader of Aotearoa, New Zealand, but not – perish the thought – a woman leader. In the twisted logic of feminism, Jacinda seems to feel it would be demeaning for her to be known as such. But, Jacinda, please let me tell you – with the utmost respect – it would most definitely not be. Kiwis worldwide are over the moon to have a young woman, flushed with the aura and self-evident glamour of recent motherhood – and, anyway, rivetingly attractive before any of that experience – at the helm. Not only that, but also articulate to the nth degree and organised down to the last full stop. She is pure taonga, though she may be too modest either to accept or notice that. We are therefore proud to have such a woman as our practising figurehead. Jacinda follows in the pioneering steps of Mesdames Helen Clark and Jenny Shipley, both reliable representatives of their gender and most capable in office but several years older than Jacinda and lacking her rock star appeal. With her manly fishing partner, Clarke Gayford, in tow and adorable Baby Neve in her arms, what a stir she will cause, and how many eyebrows she will

raise, when she takes her seat at the United Nations General Assembly next month, to argue the case for our country amongst the biggest fish in the world. Has there ever been a nursing mother at the UN? I rather think all previous women premiers and presidents were well past their child-bearing years by the time they first appeared at that august gathering. So I think you’ll agree, Jacinda, in her own right as a woman of the world and a young mother, is of inestimable value to our small but great nation. We know that had it not been for the nobility and party loyalty of Andrew Little in standing aside from the leadership of the Labour Party, there would have been no change of government last year. The advent of Jacinda on the scene changed instantly the dynamics of the political pot. So now we have an admittedly shaky Labour-led – by Ardern – coalition rather than another ageing National leviathan. National seems to have panicked by electing an excitable

leader whose main concern, currently, is who leaked details of his excessive expenses rather than challenging his opposite number across the parliamentary aisle. Bridges seems most unlikely to best the PM in head-to-head debate in the House, anytime soon. Then there is the political mayhem recently occurred across the sea in Canberra where yet another PM has bitten the dust in what the Aussies delicately describe as a Party Spill. Some spill! So farewell Malcolm, hello Scott. Some, as we know, have greatness thrust upon them but, in Australia, not for long. How can Morrison expect to be anything but a passing PM? His only hope would appear to be to consult with Jacinda to find out how it is done so consistently in the land of the long white cloud. We seem to have been a model of political stability for a long time now. And after her cheeky chat with Steve Hansen following the Wallabies disastrous performance on Saturday,

Jacinda might be inspired to offer to teach the poor old Aussies how to play rugby! So, Jacinda, I implore you, don’t hide your womanhood; in a most decorous way, flaunt it. Volunteering to make a difference community projects and services, is great. However, at another level, every community initiative sinks or swims on the participation of willing volunteers. They’re the life-blood of these services to community. Offering your support in a hands on role is best if you are able. But there’s plenty of other ways to make a difference and encourage service providers to keep going. Appreciative calls, emails and texts can really boost them. You can make a difference! I’m reminded of a story. Following a severe storm on the east coast of USA, a grumpy old man and a young boy were walking along the beach. Millions of small crabs littered the beach, stranded in debris and sand. As he walked, the boy was picking up the helpless crabs and throwing them back into the sea.

Who really owns our banks? By Liam Dann Shane Jones has taken another swing at the banks – suggesting they should be required to keep rural branches open. But whatever you think of their obligation to maintain branches there is one mistake that Jones (and almost everyone) else keeps making about the ownership of the big four banks. While Westpac, ANZ, ASB and BNZ all have parent companies that are domiciled and regulated in Australia, they are actually all majority American owned. So the notion, which plays on our sense of trans-Tasman rivalry, that big banks’ profits head out of New Zealand and into the pockets of Australians just isn’t right. According to latest filings on Bloomberg our largest bank ANZ is 61 per cent owned by US shareholders with just 17 per cent of shares held in Australia. Westpac is 58 per cent US owned with 22 per cent held by Aussie shareholders. CBA and NAB (the parent companies of ASB and BNZ respectively) have similar ownership profiles – all dominated by US shareholders with Australia a

distant second. That explains in part why the Aussies themselves get so fired up about being ripped off by the banks. They don’t have a sense of ownership either. The Royal Commission inquiry across the Tasman is a reminder that the public there is more likely to sympathise with the hard-line views of Shane Jones than we are in New Zealand. What is clear from the ownership stats is that – even with the growth of KiwiSaver funds investing in the Australian market – New Zealand sees precious little of the dividends flowing back our way. ANZ’s NZ division pulled a $941m profit in the latest half year and is tipped to top $2b for the full year. But New Zealanders – owning just 0.13 of the company – won’t see much of that. In fact Norway, Luxembourg, Japan, Ireland, UK, Switzerland, Sweden, Canada, Hong Kong, German, Singapore, the Netherlands and France (in that order) all hold bigger stakes in our largest bank. So when Jones talks about dividends flowing offshore – he’s definitely not wrong. – NZME

A2 Milk said its products had gone on sale in Walmart stores in the US. In a statement, the company said it had secured distribution into Walmart stores across New York, Pennsylvania, Florida, Texas, Maryland, and Washington DC. The products became available in stores on July 27, furthering the growth of its brand across the US, it said. “Achieving distribution with such a powerful and respected retailer like Walmart further validates the a2 Milk brand proposition in the US and marks a critical point in our company’s drive to bring consumers back to dairy

by providing our products to the roughly 75 million Americans who report dairy intolerance,” Blake Waltrip, a2’s Boulder Colorado-based US chief executive said. “The a2 Milk proposition is unique in the dairy industry and we are looking forward to continuing to spread awareness of the benefits of A1 protein-free milk with the first-to-market brand, a2 Milk,” he said. A2 Milk’s managing director and chief executive Jayne Hrdlicka said the partnership with Walmart added “opportunity and growth” to the company’s US expansion. The company had already an-

Consumer confidence holds up By ReBecca HowaRD Consumer confidence held up in August as households remained relatively upbeat about current conditions, but are still cautious about the outlook. The ANZ Roy Morgan consumer confidence index was at 117.6, virtually unchanged from 118.4 in July with disquiet focused on prospects for the broader economy rather than households’ own finances, something ANZ chief economist Sharon Zollner said was “likely an echo of weak business confidence survey results”. The ANZ Business Outlook confidence indicator for August, published this week, dropped to another 10-year low, in the same week as Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern sought to address the issue by appointing Air New Zealand chief executive Christopher Luxon

to chair a new business advisory group to engage at a high level with the government on economic policy issues. Zollner said that ANZ’s confidence composite gauge (which combines business expectations and intentions with consumer sentiment) has fallen and suggests “a deceleration in GDP growth by year end”. The economy may “indeed struggle” over the second half of the year as firms defer investment and employment decisions, she said. The current conditions index in yesterday morning’s consumer survey eased 1 point to 123.5, above the historical average, while the future conditions index was 113.7 versus 114.1 in July and still below the historical average. “Perceptions of current conditions remain strong, reflecting

a tight labour market. However, there is a degree of caution about the future, more about the economy as a whole than respondents’ own financial situations,” said ANZ chief economist Sharon Zollner. Of the survey’s 1004 respondents, a net 2 per cent expected good times financially in the next 12 months, down from 3 per cent in July. It was the lowest reading since October 2015. Over the next five years, a net 13 per cent predicted continuous good times, down from a net 14 per cent in July. Consumers’ perceptions of their current financial situation fell 2 points, with a net 12 per cent of those surveyed reporting they’re feeling financially better off than a year ago. However, a net 26 per cent expect to be better off in 12 months versus a net 25 per cent in July. – NZME

Australian jailed for spying An Australian filmmaker arrested after flying a drone to photograph a Cambodian opposition party rally last year was convicted of spying and sentenced to six years in prison yesterday. James Ricketson had faced up to 10 years in prison. Prosecutors have indicated he was suspected of working with the opposition party or had worked directly for a foreign power, though that country was never specified in court. The charge against him, endangering national security, was tantamount in legal terms to espionage. As the prison van left after the panel of judges delivered the verdict, Ricketson shouted to reporters the same question he often raised throughout his trial: “Who am I spying for?” Before hearing the verdict, he told The Associated Press that based on the evidence and facts in the case, he should be set free. Ricketson, 69, repeatedly insisted he had no political agenda and his work making documentary films was journalistic in nature. The evidence presented against Ricketson appeared thin, but Cambodia’s courts are considered highly politicised and their rulings often tightly align with the ruling party’s agenda. “Since he arrived in Cambodia, the accused person has been collecting political, social and economic information about Cambodia and sending

The prosecutors had indicated Ricketson also was suspected of working with the opposition Cambodian National Rescue Party, which for a time had enough popularity among Cambodians to be a viable challenger to Hun Sen’s rule. The party’s dissolution by a court ruling last year assured Hun Sen’s party of its sweeping victory in the July general elections, which returned Hun Sen to office for five more years. Ricketson testified in his defence that he made contacts with the opposition party strictly for journalistic purposes while making a documentary

film. He recounted a filmmaking career dating to the 1970s, and presented acclaimed Australian movie director Peter Weir to attest to his professionalism in the field. Ricketson’s other character witnesses were several Cambodians, including his informally adopted daughter, who described how he had provided financial assistance to them and other poor members of Cambodian society. Throughout his trial, Ricketson shouted brief but defiant remarks to reporters as he was led in and out of the court building for each hearing. He decried the paucity of evidence and repeatedly asked the taunting question of what country

he was supposed to have been spying for. At one point, however, he took a tried-and-true approach in trying to earn clemency by expressing contrition. In a July 1 letter addressed to Hun Sen and published in a pro-government newspaper, he wrote: “May I please, respectfully, send my sincerest apologies to yourself and the Cambodian Government. I now realise that my statements I have made in the press and other media are disruptive and ill-informed. These statements were made from a place of foreign naivety and ignorance about the complexities and difficulties of governing Cambodia,” he wrote. – AP

Space station air leak temporarily patched Astronauts have scrambled to patch a tiny hole that was allowing air to leak from the Russian side of the International Space Station. NASA and Russian space officials have stressed the six astronauts were in no danger. The leak – possibly caused by a micro-meteorite strike – was detected mid-week during the night, resulting in a

small loss of cabin pressure. It was traced to a hole about 2mm across, located in the most recent Russian Soyuz spacecraft capsule to dock at the space station. On Thursday morning the crew taped over the hole, slowing the leak. Flight controllers monitored the cabin pressure while working to come up with a

better long-term solution. The leaking Soyuz – one of two up in space – arrived at the orbiting lab in June with three astronauts. It’s their ride home, too, come December, and also serves as a lifeboat in case of an emergency. A NASA spokesman said it was premature to speculate on whether the three might

have to return to earth early if the leak, even as small as it is, cannot be stopped. The hole is located in the upper section of the Soyuz, which does not return to earth, according to NASA. The 400km high outpost is home to three Americans, two Russians and one German. Orbital debris is a constant threat to spacecraft. – AP

Dutch cartoon contest cancelled A Dutch anti-Islam politician has cancelled a planned Prophet Muhammad cartoon contest following death threats and concerns other people could be put at risk. “To avoid the risk of victims of Islamic violence, I have decided not to let the cartoon contest go ahead,” far-right opposition politician Geert Wilders said in a written statement. Wilders, who for years has lived under round-the-clock protection because of death threats sparked by his fierce anti-Islam rhetoric, said he

does not want others endangered by the contest he planned for November. The planned contest sparked angry protests in Pakistan and a death threat this week from a 26-year-old man, reportedly a Pakistani, who was arrested earlier this week in The Hague. Physical depictions of the prophet are forbidden in Islam and are deeply offensive to Muslims. “It’s not just about me,” Wilders said in the statement. Strong opponents of the event “see not only me, but the entire Netherlands

as a target,” he said. The contest was to have been held at the tightly guarded offices of his Party for Freedom in the Dutch parliament building. Earlier, a Dutch judge extended by two weeks the detention of the man who allegedly threatened to attack Wilders. The Dutch government had been at pains to distance itself from the contest. Prime Minister Mark Rutte last week questioned Wilders’ motive for organising the contest, saying his aim was

to be provocative. However, Rutte added that people in the Netherlands have far-reaching freedom of speech rights and the government did not intend to seek the contest’s cancellation. In a clear indication of the anger Wilders had generated, thousands of hard-line Islamists marched toward Pakistan’s capital on Thursday in protest. Some 10,000 supporters of the Tehreek-i-Labaik group, which helped Imran Khan to become prime minister, called on Khan to cut diplomatic ties with the Netherlands. – AP

Emmy Rossum is saying goodbye to Shameless after the show’s upcoming ninth season. In an emotional Facebook post, Rossum said playing her complex character was a “gift” and called the past eight years the best of her life. Baldwin leaves Joker Alec Baldwin has pulled out of playing Bruce Wayne’s father in the Joker movie. The actor told USA Today he has scheduling issues. They made a dream start to the 2018 Heartland Championship last weekend, now Mid Canterbury will look to build on that with a win in their first home game of the rugby competition today. Mid Canterbury are set to take on North Otago this afternoon and while the forward pack that ran out on to the field would be the same one that played a big role in downing last year’s runners-up Horowhenua-Kapiti in round one, changes had been rung in the backline. Mid Canterbury coach Sean Carter said while one of the changes had been forced by injury, the others were down to simply wanting more. “When we looked at last Saturday, all the boys played really well, but we think we can squeeze a lot more out of the backline by changing a few things,” Carter said. Second-five Isireli Masiwini had been carrying a shoulder injury and the decision had been made to rest him today. “We just need to be really careful that we take care of him just for the fact he’s a really pivotal part of the backline,” Carter said. “It would be great to play him, we will miss him, but one game could impact and could do more damage and we could lose him for the rest of the season.” Dan Fransen would move from wing to fullback, where his pace would be an asset, with Timoci Nabakeke moving to one wing and Methven’s Hugh Griffiths set to make his first start on the other wing. Griffiths had been carrying an injury through from the club season, so didn’t feature in last weekend’s win over Horowhenua-Kapiti. “To me he is an exciting wee player. He’s a pocket rocket with a heart the size of a lion and he just bashes and crashes,” Carter said. Tom Hanham-Carter would start at centre, as he did in round one, while Andrew Letham moves

had been things to work on after Mid Canterbury let last year’s runners-up back into the game after having a big lead at halftime. “The biggest thing is our defence around the ruck. We were under a lot of pressure against Horowhenua-Kapiti and they defended really well, but at the end of the day you can only defend so long because you start to fatigue when you’ve got big, hard ball carriers running at you,” Carter said. So defence was key today, as was speed off the line. But possibly the biggest thing was the mental aspect, Carter said. With the 2018 Heartland Champion-

ship shaping up to be a cracker with some tough battles ahead, Carter said his side could not afford to get complacent and let teams back into games. They needed to shut the gate and ensure they didn’t let teams get bonus points. “At the end of the day we don’t want to be reliant, at the end of the season, on other teams,” Carter said. “Any team, regardless of the competition, can win on their day, it’s just a matter of who wants it the most. Many teams have been beaten by going in with a blasé attitude. “Our goal is just to focus on doing what we need to do really,

really well and give ourselves the best opportunity to get to the top four. We are not interested in what the other teams are scoring for and against. “It’s a very, very fierce competition and we have a very hard road. We’ve got North Otago and they will be formidable, then there’s the likes of Wanganui, South Canterbury and Buller, so it’s a hard old road but we are always of the opinion that you’ve got to play everyone to get there anyway.” Mid Canterbury will play North Otago at the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds today at 2.30pm, with the curtain-raiser being between the two unions’ development sides at 12.50pm.

When Mid Canterbury and North Otago square off in round two of rugby’s Heartland Championship today, one of New Zealand’s top rugby referees will be in control. Jamie Nutbrown, one of the New Zealand Rugby Union’s (NZRU’s) full time professional rugby referees, has been put in charge of the game as part of an NZRU directive that will see all of the country’s professional referees adjudicate one Heartland Championship and Farah Palmer Cup (the women’s competition) game each this season, along with their Mitre 10 Cup commitments. Nutbrown, a former Super Rugby player who turned to refereeing once his playing days came to an end, would control today’s game with the help of Mid Canterbury’s Matt Gallagher and Chris O’Malley as his assistant referees. Nutbrown was looking forward to the challenge of refereeing what he was certain would be a tough game, with fierce rivalry given it was a kind of local derby. “I think it’s a really good initiative really, because you can get stuck in just doing Super Rugby and you can just get into the mould of they are all professional players so they should know what they’re doing, and you have got TMOs and video referrals and that sort of stuff. So to do this mix of games and different playing abilities can sometimes challenge you as a referee,” Nutbrown said. “I think it’s just great for the game. It gives the players a chance to be refereed by some of the guys

you can see and actually make the calls. “There’s a little bit of pressure in terms of you have to make the decision; you can’t rely on ‘I’m not sure, I was a bit too slow getting there, I’ll just fall back on the TMO and get him to check’. You can get a bit too comfortable when you’re in the Super Rugby and Mitre 10 Cup environment because you do have that backstop to fall back on.” It would mean backing himself, and Nutbrown was looking forward to the challenge. Today’s match between Mid Canterbury and North Otago would kick off at the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds at 2.30pm.

Playing with the big names After a stellar season with the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic, netballer Kate Lloyd was named in the Silver Ferns development squad. She was at home in Ashburton this week and caught up with the Guardian’s Erin Tasker.

ate Lloyd’s rapid rise through New Zealand netball ranks has caught even the 21-year-old defender off guard. At times this season, when she took to the court to form a defensive partnership with New Zealand netball legend Casey Kopua in the Waikato/Bay of Plenty side in the ANZ premiership, she had to pinch herself to make sure she wasn’t dreaming. But she wasn’t and the surprises weren’t done with yet. At the end of the ANZ Premiership, where the Magic finished a disappointing fifth out of six teams, the talented 1.92m-tall defender was named in the Silver Ferns development squad. Lloyd said she couldn’t believe it. “I was so shocked. It was only probably a 30-second phone call, but I kept saying, ‘are you sure?’.” They were sure and come December Lloyd will head off to a week-long Silver Ferns development camp where she’ll get a chance to continue what has been a massive year when it comes to learning. A year ago, Lloyd was in a sort of netballing limbo. She’d just finished a season as part of the Mainland Tactix side, but with no shortage of talented defenders already within the Tactix ranks, Lloyd was only contracted to the Tactix as a training partner, and she was happy with that. In her first year out of school Lloyd was studying at Lincoln University and playing for Mainland in the Beko Netball League, and the following year made the Tactix team as an injury replacement. When that season finished, Lloyd wasn’t sure what the future held for her. Other players were talking about what they were doing the following season, but Lloyd didn’t really know how the whole contracting process worked and so she just focused on getting the job done as part of the New Zealand under-21 side for the world cup. She headed to Botswana with the team, where they did get the job done, and found a surprise waiting for her when she got home. “I went to the world cup and came back and had a Facebook message from Marg Forsyth, the Magic coach. I didn’t even know who she was so I had to Google her,” Lloyd said. Forsyth was a former Silver Fern who had been part of the Magic coaching team since 2014 and took on the role of head coach in 2017. She asked if Lloyd was contracted for the 2018 season. She had the training partner contract for the Tactix side, but after a few emails back and forth, Lloyd decided to take the plunge and make the move north and become a fully-fledged ANZ premiership player, contracted to the Magic. “I had to step up. Coming to the Magic I thought I would be a bench player and just sit there and soak it all up,” Lloyd said. But Kelly Jury’s dislocated shoulder changed things and Lloyd found herself on court

forming a defensive partnership with Kopua, a player she had idolised as a youngster dividing her time between netball and basketball while growing up in Ashburton. “I had to grow and learn so rapidly, but it was probably the best thing for me in terms of netball.” Lloyd said Kopua was like royalty in Hamilton and she never dreamed she’d get the opportunity to play alongside her. “I never thought I would see the day. I thought she would retire before I even got close to her, but she’s still ticking along and giving the younger ones a run for their money,” Lloyd said. Even in her first year as part of the Tactix squad, lining up to shake the hands of players after games who she had grown up watching on the television didn’t feel real. “I still feel like the young one that’s just at their ankles,” Lloyd said.

Moving to Hamilton was a big move both in terms of netball and in life. Playing for the Tactix and studying sport and recreation management at Lincoln University, Lloyd had been only an hour’s drive away from home and family. Moving to Hamilton had been a big step and had allowed her to learn a lot about herself. She was out in the big wide world on her own, but she still had incredible support from her biggest fans – her family. Her parents took a big crew to one of her games in Wellington and when they played the Tactix in Christchurch they’d take a couple of van-loads of people to watch. On a sunny Sunday in her Ashburton family home, where she’ll be based for the next while as she catches up on some of the papers she’d missed while living in Hamilton, Lloyd looked up at the framed

New Zealand under-21 netball dress and medal that took pride of place on the wall. It was a bit embarrassing, she said. But, the support of her family over the years has been huge and she is happy to be home in Ashburton, where she isn’t Kate Lloyd the netballer. She is Kate Lloyd the daughter and friend, who just happened to play netball at a pretty high level. Just how far she could go in netball, Lloyd didn’t know. “Ever since I was 12 I’ve wanted to be a Silver Fern, but you just need to be realistic,” Lloyd said. “I know, for me, I’m not ready yet. I would love to be in there but I want to be in there when I feel ready and confident that I can do the job.” Her next challenge was known though, with Lloyd this week having been named as part of the Tactix squad for the 2019 season.

Celtic A saw off a late challenge from Methven A to win the Mid Canterbury Netball ACL premier one final 30-24 on Thursday night and cap off a stellar season. The win ensured Celtic A finished the season unbeaten and also put the cherry on top for the wider Celtic sporting family, after the Celtic senior rugby team also took out the biggest prize in Mid Canterbury Rugby – the Watters Cup – a few weeks ago. It was the first time the club’s rugby side had won it outright in 18 years. But, despite having successfully seen off every other challenge that had come their way so far this season, Celtic’s netballers didn’t have it all their own way in Thursday night’s final at the EA Networks Centre. Celtic A started the stronger of the two sides and got out to a 9-4 lead at the end of the first quarter and had extended the margin to eight by halftime, ahead 18-10. But Methven A weren’t going down without a fight. They needed to start a comeback in the third quarter if they were going to stand a chance of coming from behind and win for the second

By three-quarter time they’d clawed one goal back and then scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter to narrow the gap to five. was over the moon with the win and the season her side had produced but admitted to having been a little worried at times in the final. She said her side’s second half was a bit flat. “I was concerned because Methven certainly put the heat on us and I was just pleased the girls responded,” she said. “It’s lovely being unbeaten, but it really adds that extra bit of pressure and the girls don’t want to let themselves down, or each other down.” Leadley said it came down to who started the game better. “In games like that the start is really crucial and we got our confidence going early in the game and basically that’s all that kept us in there, really,” Leadley said. She was on the edge of her seat as Methven A started clawing their way back into contention in second half. “That’s what a final is about and I’m pleased for everyone’s sake it was a good game to watch, I just wasn’t happy with my poor old heart rate,” Leadley said. Methven A went into the game planning on throwing everything they had Celtic’s way, and they did that, claiming more than their

fair share of turnovers in the first half, but too often they turned the ball over themselves before they could get it back down the other end. Methven A coach Maree Firth said you couldn’t afford to give away ball against a class side like Celtic A, because they made you pay, and they showed that on Thursday night. “You have to convert those turnovers and with Celtic you have to take every opportunity that you can and unfortunately we didn’t probably in the first half, and I think in the second half we relaxed because we had nothing to lose,” Firth said. “I don’t think we necessarily believed in the first half but we then realised we had a chance and realised we could actually win it. “But it’s hard to play catch-up netball and we proved the week before we could do it, and we did it again, but Celtic were just a well rounded side.” Meanwhile Ashburton College finished third with a 35-23 win over Mt Somers in the play-off for third, while United A claimed the premier two title with a 41-31 win over Southern A.

Cambridge trainer Shaune Ritchie is eyeing a tilt at the Gr.3 Wellington Cup (3200m) in January with Excalibur who will begin his cup campaign in the MWIS Lawyers (1400m) at Ruakaka today. The Tavistock gelding is the winner of six races, including three in a row before his unplaced last-start run in the Gr.1 Auckland Cup (3200m), but his trainer isn’t expecting too much from the gelding fresh-up. “He’s going to be in need of the run,” Ritchie said. “He hasn’t raced since the Auckland Cup and he’s a five-year-old now, so I would expect the 1400m to be too sharp for him. “We’re just looking to work our way up. I don’t think he was competitive last year as a four-yearold until he got to 2000m-plus, so I wouldn’t think being a year older he would be any different this preparation. We thought we would take advantage of a decent track at Ruakaka and get his spring and summer cups campaign underway.” Ritchie said he thinks Excalibur is better suited to handicap conditions and is planning the gelding’s spring and summer

campaign accordingly. “He probably was inconvenienced by the set weights and penalties conditions of the Auckland Cup,” he said. “We’ll probably head for the Wellington Cup this season instead of an Auckland Cup. He’s probably going to take a couple of runs to get to his peak fitness and up to the trip we are looking for. “I think races like the Waikato Cup, Counties Cup or the Avondale Cup would be within his range because he is probably in a nice position in the weights. Meanwhile, later in the day Ritchie will line-up Swisswatch in the Harcourts Bream Bay (1200m), but he holds concerns about drawing the outside barrier. “If there was another option we would certainly be scratching on Saturday from gate 17,” he said. “It’s a horror draw for a horse who races forward and on the pace, so we can envisage him having a tough run. “But with Eilish’s (McCall, jockey) four kilo claim we are hoping that he can sneak in somewhere and run a cheeky race.” - NZ Racing Desk

‘Reform or die’ New Zealand is set to lose up to 20 racetracks and the TAB could be outsourced to an overseas operator after the most comprehensive review in the racing industry’s history. The report suggesting the radical changes, commissioned by Minister for Racing Winston Peters and overseen by top Australian racing administrator and breeder John Messara, was released at a public meeting in Hamilton on Thursday night. Messara made 17 recommendations on how to fix the ailing New Zealand racing industry, concentrating particularly on the thoroughbred code. The two hottest topics will be the closure of 20 thoroughbred racetracks around the country, including Avondale in Auckland, and the likelihood the licence to bet on racing and sport in New Zealand would be outsourced to an overseas, likely Australian operator, effectively ending the New Zealand TAB’s control of such gambling in this country. Messara suggests track closures as a way to cut costs and his idea was not rebuffed by thoroughbred bosses, who have struggled to keep many tracks up to industry standard in recent years. That has resulted in too many race meetings being cancelled because of poor or even dangerous racing surfaces, costing

the industry tens of millions of dollars. Peters had already promised the racing industry three synthetic, or all-weather, tracks to help, with one certain to be built in Waikato and the other two touted for Manawatu and Christchurch. They could cost between $30-40 million for the three, with half that cost to potentially come from the Regional Development Fund and the other half to be met by the racing industry. Those three tracks would enable racing bosses to close struggling regional tracks and transfer their racing dates even though that will meet with some resistance and even outrage in some areas. “We will ensure that every region retains at least one track so there is racing there,” said Peters. “And we will consult with the industry on these tracks that are to be closed. But we have to change, even if it is unpopular.” While track closures will mean minimal loss of fulltime jobs, the outsourcing of the NZRB’s gaming licence will effectively mean the closure of much of the New Zealand TAB and that could mean significant job losses. But Peters says that will be balanced by the economic benefits and jobs retained or created by a more profitable racing industry. - NZME
