The police’s primary responders around Canterbury will remain armed for the foreseeable future as they continue to monitor an ongoing threat. Sub-area commander Senior Sergeant Matt Emery confirmed that a directive has been handed down to police around the Canterbury region for all primary responders to be armed at all times. “The directive is being reviewed twice a day and is in relation to an ongoing threat,” he said. “It covers our primary responders, so officers who are out in vehicles

and highway patrol.” Police staff are able to arm themselves anytime they see necessary, but are not regularly armed. “It is just about having them prepared for the unexpected,” he said. “There is a very slim chance they are ever going to use them. “The officers in Christchurch would be regularly arming themselves once a shift, but our guys in the rural areas maybe every two or three days, and when it comes to actually using them it is infinitesimal.” There has been focus on armed police in Canterbury this week after a man was shot by police after a chase through the streets of Christchurch.
Canterbury District Commander Superintendent John Price said a shotgun-wielding man failed to stop for police on Breezes Road about 7.20pm. Road spikes were used on his vehicle before he fired at police. They returned fire and the man was shot in the lower body. Price said the man had been seriously injured. “The man presented a firearm, believed to be a shotgun, and fired at police,” he said. “Police returned fire and the offender was shot in the lower body. “Police immediately issued first aid and the man was transported to Christchurch Hospital with serious injuries.”
Resthome to close doors Ashburton’s oldest resthome, Cameron Courts, is closing its doors. A decline in resident numbers is the main cause of the closure. The closure will see 30 resthome beds lost to the district. Owners pledge to remain open until every resident has somewhere else to live.

Ashburton’s oldest resthome, Cameron Courts, is closing its doors, leaving 10 elderly people looking for new homes. The closure potentially costs the district 30 resthome beds, but owner Ash Mani said resident numbers had been declining over the past two-and-a-half years and that meant the home was no longer viable. “Seventy to eighty per cent we can live with but not 30 per cent occupancy,” he said. Yesterday Mani faced the difficult job of telling those 10 residents and their families that they would need to find somewhere else to live. The closure won’t be immediate, with Mani saying he is committed to staying open until the last resident is settled in a new home.
“We’ve been very open with them, we’ve told them what we’ve been trying to do but our residents are very sad because this is their home, it’s a homely place. It’s sad to see and we now just want to see them settled somewhere else.” Mani, and wife Lowreen, bought Cameron Courts in 2010 at a time when most resthomes had waiting lists for beds. Over the past two and a half years that had changed as a new facility opened and the district faced an oversupply of beds. Deciding to close the resthome was heartbreaking, but in business terms it was the only decision that could be made, he said. He’s explored every avenue in an effort to keep the home open, talking to the Canterbury District Health Board, the district’s two members of parliament, govern-
ment agencies and community organisations. “This has been a very tough, very hard decision. We’ve even tried to sell but with the numbers not there, no-one was interested.” That resident numbers were falling did not reflect badly on the facility as it was fully compliant and employed excellent staff. When resident numbers dropped government funding also dropped but the facility still needed to be fully staffed, Manis said. “We’ve tried everything but we had to ask ourselves, how long will we continue? It’s been very hard for two-and-a-half years now, it’s been draining everything we have to keep this going.” Last year the home had just one new admission. Mani is now working with the CDHB to have residents assessed
for new resthomes and he’s contacted facilities across Ashburton letting them know there will be people looking for new homes. He’s not rushing the closure process, knowing the move will have a huge impact on his residents’ lives. “We still want to do the best by them,” he said. Looking at the aged-care sector Mani said there was now a strong trend towards keeping people in their own homes for as long as possible with community support. And that meant when the elderly finally needed to move into care they were frail and usually at hospital rather than resthome level. He believes his won’t be the only older resthome in the country to close in the face of the changing needs in aged-care.
More government support needed to be directed into care facilities to ensure they were able to provide the best possible care for residents but still be financially viable for owners, Manis said. As the district’s oldest resthome, Cameron Courts does not have the ensuite facilities new resthomes have and he believes that is one factor not in its favour when families looked for care for a relative. When the last resident moves, Manis knows he’ll need to decide the future of the large, multi-bedroom property. He’s not thinking too far down the track today. His priority is to get his residents settled elsewhere first. Cameron Courts was established as a private resthome in 1949, initially as a home for women only.

Mid Canterbury’s dairy farmers will average an extra $100,000 from Fonterra lifting its milk price forecast by 30 cents to $6.30-$6.60 per kilogram of milksolids. The additional revenue will compensate only to some degree, however, the giant co-op lowering its share earnings to 15-25 cents a share, down from 25c-35c. The 30c/kg lift in the milk price from the December range of $6$6.30/kg is a u-turn on a series of payout losses since the May starting point of $7/kg. Commodity prices have rebounded over the last six GlobalDairyTrade auctions and leading up to yesterday’s announcement farmers would have been hoping the milk price would follow suit. The average national farmer stands to gain about $48,000. Mid Canterbury farmers earn more as they typically produce 330,000kg of milksolids from larger herds averaging 760 cows compared with the national average of 430 cows yielding 160,000kg. As much as the payout rise will please them, the lower share earnings will take some of the gloss off as that is a reflection of the co-op’s value-added and business performance. Fonterra has advised its farmers and other unit holders that it will not be paying an interim dividend. Chairman John Monaghan said the improved milk price forecast reflected increases in global milk prices over the last quarter year. He said the milk price was strong, but the co-op’s earnings performance was not satisfactory and it needed to deliver farmers and other unit holders a respectable return on their share investment. The board was making solid progress with a full review of the co-op strategy which included a review of the dividend policy, he said. “We are taking a close look at our business with our portfolio review, where we can win in the world, and the products and markets where we have a real compet-

Mt Hutt staff and Methven Lions Club volunteers are preparing to be busy, busy, busy tomorrow . They expect to welcome about 2000 visitors to Discover Mt Hutt, their annual open day which will, for the first time this year, provide skiing and sledding in addition to walking and mountain biking. “The weather forecast could not be any better,” said ski area manager James McKenzie. With temperatures around 10 degrees and plenty of glare from the snow, visitors will need hats, sunglasses and sunscreen, and may get away with just shorts and t-shirt in the base area. Mt Hutt’s notorious nor’wester is expected to stay well away, but there will be a breeze and visitors will need an extra layer at the top of the Summit Six as they take in the views across the mountains from Kaikoura to Timaru, encompassing Mt Tasman and Mt Cook. Hashtags featuring “summer skiing” are set to bombard social media, as people carry their skis to patches of snow and get in a few turns. Last year about 1500 people attended the open day, and about $25,000 was raised. Half of funds this year will go to Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue, and the other half will be distributed by the Lions to local groups.

Construction of new ski trails is under way at Mt Hutt, one featuring a tunnel. The work will be among attractions to view this weekend at Discover Mt Hutt, the annual fundraising open day held by the ski area and Methven Lions Club. Ski area manager James McKenzie said about $2 million of improvements was being undertaken this summer, and this included four new trails, rental
equipment upgrade and new snowmaking equipment. Bulldozers had been on site moving earth for the new trails, which included one to be named Hood’s Hollow. It was about 900 metres long, beginning at the top of the quad chair, ending at the bottom of Broadway, featuring an approximate nine-metre tunnel under Lex’s Way. McKenzie said the tunnel would be made of concrete. The first concrete deliveries
were to be made this week, while the concrete reinforcing bar was already on site. The new trail would solve skier merging issues, and also be a lot of fun. “It’s as much about being a fun feature,” McKenzie said. The trail was named after the late Doug Hood, who pioneered the access road project to the ski area. Other new trails include Back Paddock and Reservoir Dogs. Back Paddock would be a be-
ginner to intermediate run which will be a continuation of the top section of Highway 72. Loading mid-station of the triple chair will be reintroduced for this. Reservoir Dogs will be an advanced run near the snowmaking reservoir – at its right hand side when looking up from base area. And the expert trail of Race Hill is to be relocated to begin at Mid Towers, enabling it to become longer and take advantage of better quality snow.

The sale of council owned land to fund a survey of the Lake Clearwater huts settlement remains a point of tension between hut owners and the Ashburton District Council. Last year the council told hut holders it wanted to survey the settlement to establish official boundaries between properties rather than accept what in many cases had become fluid, informal boundaries to accommodate years of hut extensions. It was about protecting bach owners and people buying properties in the settlement as much as it is about protecting the council when it issues building permits
and transfers leases, council commercial manager Colin Windleborn said. Initially the council wanted to sell the three sections it owned in the settlement to fund the survey, but hut holders reacted sharply. They wanted hut numbers to stay as they were and the project stalled while the council worked out how to pay for what was anticipated to be a $100,000 job. Windleborn said the council had to complete the survey to comply with the Resource Management Act. Currently the only surveyed sections were the ones the council owned with the odd boundary peg defining some sections, council commercial manager Colin
Windleborn said he has has built money into next year’s budget but councillors had to decide who footed the bill. While they had held off selling sections, during budget discussions councillors were divided on the best way to fund the survey Neil Brown wanted the work funded through the council’s property reserves with the money from section sales reinvested in that account. There had been a suggestion that the hut holders would fund the survey rather than see the council sections sold, but finance and business services manager Paul Brake urged caution. “There’s no real agreement by
the hutholders to pay this money, there’s no guarantee they’ll pay. Once this money is gone from rates, it’s gone,” he said. The council needed to have a legal, binding agreement with the hutholders that they would pay before it spent rates money, Brake said. Russell Ellis suggested the council should do the survey and tell the hut holders it would be selling its sections to pay for the work. “It’ll then be their decision, do they cough up with the money or see us sell our sections.” That was not the way to go, mayor Donna Favel said. “At this stage we’re not selling land. We agreed as a council we
wouldn’t sell any sections, that we’d do the work and then have a conversation with the hut holders,” she said. If section sales were off the options list, then councillors had just two choices – fund the survey through a general rate that meant every ratepayer carried the cost of from property reserves or use property reserves. “Today we’re not deciding on a sale. We’ll do the survey and then we’ll have to make these decisions.” Councillors agreed property reserves were the best option and once the work was completed they will decide whether they would sell sections to cover costs.

Vertical groups start at Mount Hutt By SuSan SandyS

Vertical group structures in Year 11, 12 and 13 are creating a stronger sense of community at Mount Hutt College. Students in the senior year levels this year have new form groups with all three levels represented. The form groups are now called manaaki, and there are eight of
them, aligned with house group colours. Manaaki meet for 15 minutes each morning with their kaiawhina, previously called the form teacher. This means students are interacting with fellow pupils from their manaaki during this time, instead of just students from their own year level. In addition, manaaki members sit with each other during assemblies.
Principal John Schreurs said Mount Hutt College already had a strong sense of community, and moving to the vertical structure had built on that. A programme which had traditionally worked well at the school and featured a similar bridge across the year levels was the big buddy system, involving Year 7 pupils being individually paired up with Year 13 pupils.
“The important thing is to create that sense of family and connection,” Schreurs said. The vertical group structure remained a trial at this stage, and it had not been without criticism, with some Year 13s pointing out they found it difficult to have not as much time with their fellow students in the same year level. Head students spoken to by the Guardian could see that perspec-
tive, but overall spoke positively of the initiative. “It’s good because you are encouraged to talk to students in the other year levels, and interact with them, rather than being separate,” head girl Caitlin Smith said. And deputy head boy Simon Harford had noticed more solidarity in house events as students felt closer to each other.

Footpath priority settings questioned By Sue newman

As they started a long round of discussions on how they’d spend ratepayers’ money next year, Ashburton’s District Councillors found themselves debating the way in which new footpaths were established. A request was made for $432,000 of rates money to be spent on new kerb and channel in the next year. The areas chosen were two sites on Tarbottons Road, the Methven Chertsey Road in Methven, Railway Terrace in East Rakaia and Pattons Road and Roberts Street in Hinds. This work comes with a 50 per cent subsidy. Mayor Donna Favel wanted to know why those areas were chosen. She said there had been regular requests from people on Racecourse Road and Riverside for kerb and
channel but none had been provided. It came down to the use of the area, council service delivery manager Neil McCann said. Areas with higher volumes of foot traffic to schools and shops tended to be priorities, he said. Across the district the council had fallen behind in providing new kerb and channel because it had put projects on hold while it paid for the district’s art gallery and museum building, councillor Russell Ellis said. “We’re now playing catch-up because we haven’t done this work for a few years.” While the areas requested might get their new footpaths, council chief executive Hamish Riach wanted to see work done on the way these were prioritised to ensure the system was fair.

Mother warns about online game and tell us but after hearing Momo threatening their families they didn’t end up telling anybody ... they were too scared they would get their family killed. “When I sat them down and showed them a photo, my 5-yearold daughter jumped into my arms crying, saying ‘she’s coming now’. My son begged us to move house and said we had to move before Momo comes.” However, the emotional impact Momo has had on her children has left Ashby fearful. “I spoke to other parents from their class and they were saying their children all broke down in tears and were apologising. They all thought they were going to die, including our family. “Hearing that from your little boy and watching his heart shatter is heartbreaking. “The first time my son saw it was in December last year but he was too scared to tell us. It was tragic. We knew something was up because Christmas wasn’t the same and it was like he was hiding something from us. But when we asked what was up he’d say he is fine and to leave me alone. “When I finally showed them a screenshot of Momo they just jumped straight back, the tears wouldn’t stop and my son starting apologising and saying can

we move out of Auckland because Momo is coming. “I had to calm him down. I didn’t know I was going to get this reaction. He was petrified.” The Momo Challenge first gained public attention in July 2018 when people said they first noticed it on YouTube. Schools around the globe this week have sent out warnings on their websites and social media accounts, saying they have been contacted by hundreds of concerned parents. Ashby wants her children’s personal experience with the disturbing character to be used as a warning and learning tool
for other parents. “Let your children know it’s okay to speak up and keep an eye on the things they watch. “Keep loving and protect them. That’s our purpose as parents. Sit down and have a chat to your child about this as they might feel they have to keep it a secret as a way to keep safe.” The character’s appearance on Kiwi children’s screens hasn’t just been noted by parents, with Netsafe saying it has received a few recent reports over Momo. Netsafe director of education and engagement Sean Lyons says any parents who have come across any concerning content should
immediately report it to authorities. “Netsafe encourages anyone that comes across this type of content to immediately report it to the social media site or website that it’s on. “In New Zealand, it is against the law to incite another person to take their own life. If somebody is targeting a young person to play this ‘game’, or attempting to incite suicide, you should contact the police and Netsafe for help, and Lifeline for support. “Netsafe can also provide advice for any parents who are concerned about this challenge. If young people are expressing feelings about self-harm or suicide then this should be followed up with appropriate mental health support.” YouTube says it has yet to see any evidence of the challenge on its platform. “After much review, we’ve seen no recent evidence of videos promoting the Momo Challenge on YouTube. Videos encouraging harmful and dangerous challenges are clearly against our policies, the Momo challenge included. Despite press reports of this challenge surfacing, we haven’t had any recent links flagged or shared with us from YouTube that violate our Community Guidelines,” a statement from YouTube said. – NZME

An Auckland mother has posted heartbreaking footage of the emotional toll that watching the Momo suicide game has had on her children. On Wednesday, Manurewa resident Khamara Ashby sat her children down to talk about the sickening character that is said to be appearing in YouTube videos, encouraging viewers to self-harm or take their own life. The Momo character – a scary doll’s face holding a knife – interrupts shows and threatens viewers. It has appeared on Fortnite, Peppa Pig and other popular YouTube videos and warns children if they tell their parents then their family will die. After suspecting her children had accidentally watched it, Ashby held up a photo of Momo, asking if they knew who it was. Suddenly, her children burst into tears saying: “It’s scaring me, we’re sorry, stop saying her name, we’re going to be killed.” “My 7-year-old son was hanging out with his friends at school watching Fortnite gameplay videos and about 14 minutes into the video Momo popped up and said: ‘If you tell anybody I’m going to kill your mum and dad’,” Ashby told media. “All of the boys stood up shocked. Summit chat ‘private’ Only four other ears on the planet heard what US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un said to each other during a one-on-one chat that began their second nuclear summit. The two leaders’ interpreters were the only others privy to their conversation, raising concerns about why Trump would risk meeting Kim, who has threatened the US with nuclear strikes and has a dismal human rights record, without staff to take notes. Absent a detailed historical record and corroborating witnesses, the leaders could potentially leave a meeting and misrepresent what transpired, prompting a kind of he said-he said showdown of words. More one-on-one talks between Trump and Kim are scheduled for tomorrow, when the two leaders dig into the meat of their nuclear talks. Trump has had private confabs with world leaders before that have raised red flags. Early in his presidency, he met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Germany with only a Kremlin interpreter present. Last year, after Trump spent more than two hours talking with Putin in Helsinki, Finland, Democrats tried to subpoena Trump’s translator to testify in Congress about what was said. Republicans blocked it. The White House has never provided information on what Putin and Trump talked about. Even Trump’s director of national intelligence, Dan Coats, said he didn’t know. “It is utterly amazing, utterly amazing, that no one knows what was said,” Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said at the time. Trump’s translator in yesterday’s private chat was Yun Hyang Lee, the US State Department’s division chief for interpreting services, who also translated for the President at his first meeting with Kim last year in Singapore. The White House identified Kim’s translator as Sin Hye Yong.

For one thing, Captain Marvel is the most powerful superhero to join the universe so far – a photon-blasting powerhouse who kicks more ass than the entire assembly of Avengers. She’s also a woman. The film, directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, marks the first feature in the franchise’s 11-year history to be led by a female superhero. It’s also the first to have a female director attached.

Some experts on past USNorth Korean diplomatic efforts worry the private sitdowns give Kim an opportunity to win concessions from Trump that working-level officials would have advised him not to offer. Before the summit, Senator Ed Markey, D, said he thought Kim requested the private meeting with hopes that he could “elicit concessions from President Trump that might not otherwise ever be possible if it was just our diplomats

Davis pointed to President Richard Nixon’s many private confabs with Chinese leaders when he reopened relations with China in the 1970s. Last year, at the Singapore summit, Trump caught US ally South Korea off guard by announcing the suspension of major US military exercises with the South. Mother’s body parts shared with pet dog A son has been arrested after allegedly killing his mother and dismembering her before sharing her body parts with his pet dog. Alberto Sanchez Gomez, 26, made a startling confession to Spanish Police when they turned up to his family home in Madrid to inquire about his missing mother Soledad Gomez. When police took a look in-
side the property, they discovered her body parts chopped up in at least six large Tupperware containers. According to police, Sanchez allegedly dismembered his mother after killing her, chopping her up into more than 1000 pieces before cooking parts of her body and tossing her organs into the bin. Sanchez, a jobless former waiter, is expected to be
charged with killing her, although police have not yet said how they believe he ended her life. The first photos of Sanchez emerged as former friends told local media how he had become a problem for his family after becoming addicted to drugs and spending time on a park bench opposite his home drinking with homeless people.
It is not yet clear what the mother did. Police also claim Sanchez fed some of mother’s body parts to his dog. He was well-known to the police after being arrested for domestic abuse against his mother. A neighbour told Spanish daily El Pais: “He’d steal valuables from his mum and spend the cash on drugs.” - PA
Big names play for free An insanely impressive lineup of Kiwi acts have been announced for the Ihumātao Reclamation Festival, a multi-stage protest event against the proposed building of houses on the site. The event will take place Ihumātao, near Auckland International Airport on Saturday, beginning with a pōwhiri at 11am. The lineup includes the likes of Upper Hutt Posse, Ladi 6, Unity Pacific, Che Fu, King Kapisi, NRG, Raiza Biza and many, many more. Organisers say the event is being held to “protest the plan by transnational company, Fletcher Building, to build 480 houses on this scared whenua”.

New rules designed to stamp out money laundering and financing terrorism in New Zealand mean that the real estate industry must prove the identities of the people it works with. You might think that criminal financial activities only happen in the movies or overseas, but it’s estimated that $1.35 billion is laundered in New Zealand every year. The true cost, and social impact, is much higher. Criminals use various methods to ‘wash’ the money they make from crimes to avoid detection. Making it look like it’s come from a legitimate source – such as buying or selling property or using financial services – is an established way to do it. Now, thanks to law changes that came into force on January 1, 2019, you’ll have to prove who you are when

you’re buying or selling a property. If you’ve bought and sold a property before you’ll know that each real estate transaction is a bit like a jigsaw puzzle. All the people involved – banks or lenders, lawyers and real estate agents - play a part to help protect the integrity of the transaction and ensure that the puzzle pieces fit together correctly.
This includes making sure that the client is who they say they are to help reduce the risk of criminal activity. While it may seem a bit of a pain, the real estate agent must confirm your identity, including your date of birth and your address details, before you sign an agency agreement with them. This might seem a bit ridiculous if you’ve known the agent for a long time, or even used their agency before, but it’s all part of the due diligence they need to perform to meet the new rules. The information you’re asked for will vary depending on whether you’re selling the property as an individual or as part of a partnership, company, estate or trust. If you’re selling as an individual, you’ll need to provide photo ID and be ready to answer any other questions the agency may have.
If you’re selling a family trust property, you’ll need to provide this kind of verified identification for all the members of the trust and its beneficiaries. Ideally, these requirements won’t slow down the process at all. It’s a good idea to get as much documentation ready as you can – when you’re talking to an agent, ask them what they’d like you to bring along. Complying with anti-money laundering rules is like completing any part of the real estate transaction: it works best when everyone follows the process.

Being prepared for those winter days when bad weather keeps everyone inside and hungry is essential. The key to any good comfort food, whether it be stew, pie or quiche, is in the brassica. So, this month we’re going to get back to basics and plant broccoli, plus, we’ll give you a great self-crusting smoked chicken, kumara and broccoli quiche recipe–easy to make and a definite crowd pleaser with family and friends. So, let’s get started. Pick up your sprouting broccoli seedlings when you’re next out. First of all, broccoli likes to be planted in a new area of the garden each year. So remember to rotate your crops for optimum growth and quality. At this time of year, soil preparation is key Once you’ve chosen the perfect spot in your garden, add some compost and lime to the soil and mix well. This will

ensure your soil is in top condition for the cooler months ahead and will help prevent club root. And, if you want to give your broccoli a really good head-start, add a general fertiliser, such as nitrophoska blue, to the soil prior to planting. This will encourage growth and ensure abundant broccoli come harvest. Once you’ve prepared the soil, dig a hole (approximately 3cm deep), place your seedling inside and cover the roots with soil. Space each seedling 35 to
50cms apart. This will ensure room for the broccoli seedling to expand and grow. As broccoli can take a long time to mature, during the earlier weeks you can plant other seedlings that mature quickly in the spaces between each broccoli seedling. This is known as companion planting. Beetroot, pak choi and spring onions are all narrow in size and mature within eight-to-10 weeks, making them the perfect companion for broccoli. Also, don’t forget to add slug and snail bait to the soil surrounding your seedlings. You can buy this at any garden centre store and it’s a great way to keep creepy crawlies from eating your broccoli before you do. For a more organic option, why not try sprinkling eggshells around the garden. Slugs and snails have to avoid sharp surfaces as they can pierce their flesh. Depending on the weather conditions

s the new McLaren 600LT Spider enters production, McLaren Special Operations (MSO) is aiming to inspire prospective owners at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show with a specially curated design, adding visual excitement in the form of an accented bespoke treatment in a tribute to the car’s 675LT predecessor. The Geneva Motor Show car has been designed by MSO to demonstrate how the 600PS convertible can match its single-minded dynamic purpose – shouting to the world through its top-exit exhausts – with a truly individual look that accentuates all the design elements that distinguish a Longtail from other Sports Series variants. With all 600LTs hand-assembled and available only for a limited time, MSO is providing owners with the opportunity to commission a car that will remain not just rare but unique. The McLaren 600LT Spider by MSO combines colours, finishes and materials that express in heightened form the drama of the 600LT’s aerodynamically-optimised body. The latest MSO creation follows in a tradition of spectacular MSO Bespoke supercars that have made their debut in Geneva over the past few years. The car’s striking colour palette centres on a Dove Grey body with flashes of Napier Green outlining key design elements of the Longtail concept, from the more pronounced front splitter to the larger rear diffuser. Dove Grey, a solid colour to save weight, provides the perfect canvas on which the shimmering metallic Napier Green accents can stand out. The choice of Napier Green provides a link back to the 600LT’s predecessor, the 675LT, for which Napier Green was one of the original hues.
It has been available only as an MSO Bespoke colour since then. In a first for McLaren road cars, the Napier Green accents are applied using a new technique that sees the paint applied onto a light and flexible film which ensures a premium quality bespoke colour match. The film has previously been used on McLaren 720S GT3 and 570S GT4 race cars and this application typifies MSO’s commitment to new and innovative techniques. The contrast-colour film will be available as a bespoke option in the future. For the 600LT Spider, the film is applied to the splitter, sills and door inserts as well as the rear diffuser, where the four outer vertical ribs
create a highly distinctive look. The car features the full suite of carbon fibre options, including the MSO Defined Visual Carbon Fibre Front Fender Louvres, the ‘gills’ that have rapidly become one of the most popular options for the 600LT. In another homage to the 675LT, all the Visual Carbon Fibre exterior elements feature a satin finish. The retractable hard-top is MSO Bespoke Carbon Black while the 10-spoke Ultra Lightweight forged alloy wheels have a gloss black finish. Napier Green is the MSO Bespoke choice for the brake calipers and this provides the inspiration for contrasting stitching and the 12 o’clock mark on the steering wheel inside the cabin.
Unique among Sports Series models, the 600LT is also optionally equipped with super-lightweight carbon fibre racing seats, originally developed for the McLaren Senna. MSO Bespoke additions on show include 600LT headrest embroidery, Alcantara® headlining and steering wheel and a range of MSO ‘surprise and delight’ features for owners to find. These include an accelerator pedal etched with 600LT branding and an MSO dedication plaque. In addition, the car has been equipped with many of the most popular features from across the Sports Series range including carbon fibre interior upgrade with interior components, door inserts and tunnel sides trimmed in the material, and McLaren Track Telemetry (MTT) with lap time function and three cameras. Like any Longtail, the 600LT Spider by MSO has been honed for track driving with increased power, reduced weight and optimised aerodynamics for absolute driver engagement, attributes inherited without compromise from the 600LT Coupe. Endowed with 600PS from its 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, the 600LT Spider is lighter than any rival ensuring remarkable performance, with 0-100km/h (62mph) available in 2.9 seconds and a top speed of 324km/h (201mph) with the retractable hardtop in place. With the roof open, top speed falls by just 5mph while the driver’s connection with the car at any speed is made all the more visceral by the V8 engine’s top-exit dual exhausts close behind the occupants’ heads. Prospective McLaren owners can also employ MSO’s expertise to craft their perfect car, but spend too long pondering your 600LT Spider and you may miss out completely. McLaren is building the 600LT Spider for a limited time only.

he London Concours, presented by Montres Breguet, has announced the first of its exceptional special features; a show-stopping gathering of iconic Lamborghini Miuras. Once the world’s fastest production car, and hailed as one of the greatest automotive designs of all time, as many as eight examples will be on display at the London Concours this June. In the forthcoming, definitive book on the model, The Lam-
borghini Miura, to be published by Kidston SA this summer, the outrageous Italian supercar is celebrated as the one that set the template for almost every great automotive performance icon since. First revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in 1966, its revolutionary rear mid-engined layout quickly became de rigueur for the many supercar pretenders that followed. As if that wasn’t reason enough to celebrate the Miura, this year marks 50 years since the premiere of The Italian Job, and although the Minis secured their place in pop culture history, it was the Miura in the opening scene that captured the imagination of petrolheads the world over.
Accompanied by a spine-tingling V12 soundtrack, the Miura was driven up Italy’s beautiful Gran San Bernardo pass, in one of cinema’s greatest ever automotive scenes. That particular car was finished in lurid Arancia Miura, and the London Concours will bring together a world-class collection of up to eight variants – including one in Arancia Miura – showcasing the gamut of outlandish shades offered by the factory. Among them, London Concours visitors will also see Miuras finished in Giallo Sole, Bianco and Azzuro Cielo. In total, nearly 100 automotive greats of all eras will be on display when the London Concours rolls into the City from 5-6 June.
For the road and the track T he Wolfsburg-based automotive producer is set to present the Volkswagen T-Roc R at the International Geneva Motor Show (March 7-17 2019), the latest top model in the successfully launched crossover product line. Developed by Volkswagen R, this powerful vehicle boasts some impressive performance data: the four-cylinder TSI engine with its 2.0 litre capacity and proven Volkswagen TSI technology has an output of 221 kW/300 PS as well as torque of 400 Nm. It is equipped with a 4MOTION all-wheel drive and a 7-gear DSG dual-clutch gearbox as standard. This combination ensures excellent acceleration without any loss of traction. The Volkswagen T-Roc R can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 4.9 seconds, while the top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. The sports running gear (with lowered suspension) ensures ideal road holding. The progressive steering included as standard plays a major part in ensuring agile driving behaviour, while the 17-inch brake system – which was previously only found in the Volkswagen Golf R Performance – provides effective braking. The driving modes include a special race mode, which guarantees an especially sporty driving experience.

A very good cause
T
he Ashburton Motorbike Show staged by the Originals late last year was a success in every way. Spectators were fascinated by the exhibits of bikes and related items, the entertainment and by the bikes parked in the car park. Exhibitors enjoyed being there and the Originals enjoyed organising and running the Show. All in all a great event. Their success has enabled the Originals
to make a donation to the Ashburton Child Cancer Foundation. Last Saturday a presentation was made to the Group and typically the Originals made sure that the representatives of the group had some fun when they came to collect the donation. Isaac Wylie, one of the youngest members of the Foundation, sat on a Harley when he accepted the donation from Originals member Gerald McKenzie.
It didn’t take much to persuade Isaac to climb on board, likewise Cam Henderson and Leo Wylie thought it was pretty cool to sit on other bikes. Mike Henderson-Purdon and Alyshia Stevens from the Ashburton Child Cancer Foundation say that the Foundation provides much needed practical support for families. And they go on to say that support is possible because of donations like the one received from the Originals.

A rare gaggle of Stags spotted circulating in Methven
W
e, that is Ron Winchester and the writer, could hardly belief our eyes as we drove through Methven last Sunday evening. Returning from checking one of the rally routes for the upcoming Vintage Car Club National South Island Easter Rally, we noticed a sight not often seen. A gaggle of Triumph Stags. We immediately realised there were quite of these sports cars, but were amazed to learn there more than quite a few – there were 36 of these classics. Unfortunately very heavy rain prevented close up inspection and viewing had to be from the comfort of our car, but we did manage to speak with one of the owners, who told us he and the other enthusiastic owners were on a national tour commemorating the thirty fifth anniversary of their club. Intended as a luxury sports car, the Triumph Stag was designed to compete directly with the Mercedes-Benz SL class models. All Stags were four-seater convertible coupés, but for structural rigidity the Stag required a B-pillar roll bar hoop connected to the windscreen frame by a T-bar. A removable hardtop was later supplied as a standard fitment. The car started as a styling experiment cut and shaped from a 1963-64 Triumph 2000 which was carried out on the Continent. A prototype was spirited back to England. The end result, a two-door drophead
The touring Stags have been seen resting in many of the popular spots in New Zealand. had little in common with the styling of the Triumph 2000, but retained the suspension and drive line. Triumph liked the Michelotti design so much that they propagated the styling lines of the Stag into the new T2000/T2500 saloon and estate models of the 1970s. The car was launched in 1970, to a warm welcome at the various international auto shows, which soon turned sour after reports of problems following delivery. Some of the problems were due to the poor build quality, endemic to the British motor industry of the time, while others related to design problems in the engine. Many owners adopted a popular conversion fitting other motors. However, over the years renovators rather than Triumph engineers managed to iron out the V8 problems. Only 25,877 cars were produced between 1970 and 1977. Several variants were produced – most if
not were represented among the cars seen in Methven. Most cars came off the production line fitted with a Borg-Warner 3-speed automatic transmission. Power windows, power steering and power assisted brakes were standard. About 9000 Stags are believed to survive in the United Kingdom. The car’s immense popularity is due to its performance, comparative rarity and its Michelotti styling. The problems associated with the car have been solved by enthusiasts, elevating the Stag to the classic status originally envisioned by its designers.

Chief executive Grant Webster said Tourism Holdings was still experiencing growth in forward bookings, despite growing uncertainty in international tourism markets. Shares tumbled 6.7 per cent on the day, but managed to recover some of these losses later in the week. Air New Zealand announced earnings before taxation of $211m for the six month period ending December 31, compared to $323m in the prior period. Chief Executive Officer Christopher Luxon acknowledged the rate of growth in the New Zealand market is slowing from previous years to be more in line with other developed markets. Consequently, the airline will be reviewing its network, fleet and cost base to reflect the new environment. Shareholders will receive an interim dividend of 11 cents per share. At the time of writing, shares were down 4.5 per cent for the week. Reitirement village operator Metlifecare saw underlying net profit increase 15 per cent to $41.7m in the first half, driven by development profits. The company said growth in the value of properties slowed, while the cost of property maintenance and wages increased slightly. Shares slipped 2.5 per cent on the day.

Meanwhile, enterprise software company Gentrack tumbled 7.3 per cent on Tuesday after downgrading its guidance at its annual meeting. The company expects earnings will be about 20 per cent lower in the six months ending March, due to extra investment in staff. Off the main index, Comvita slumped almost 20 per cent Tuesday, closing at its lowest in almost four years, after reporting a first half net loss of $2.7m on revenue of $77.7m. The company said its change in approach with sales in China had taken longer than expected to implement. Meanwhile, there had been no orders from one major existing USA customer, along with another poor pre-Christmas honey harvest, contributed to the poor result. The honey maker said it would not pay an interim dividend, compared with a 4 cent payout last year. In other corporate news, Fonterra increased its 2018/19 forecast Farmgate Milk Price range to $6.30-$6.60 per kgMS, up from $6.00-$6.30, and downgraded its forecast earnings down to 15-25 cents per share versus previous guidance of 25-35cps. Chairman John Monaghan said the improved milk price forecast reflects the increases in global milk prices over the last quarter and stated it will not be paying an interim dividend.

An active business reporting week I t was another busy week on the reporting calendar in both New Zealand and Australia. Company results are one of the best opportunities for investors to gain an insight into how companies are tracking and are therefore closely watched by the market. As per usual, some companies impressed with a strong set of numbers, while the performance of others disappointed investors. Cinema software provider Vista Group, which recently re-entered the NZX50, impressed the market with its full year result. Vista reported a 21 per cent lift in net profit after tax, driven by its core cinema business which provides software for cinema operators (such as scheduling and ticketing). Vista now has a 48.1 per cent share of the large circuit cinema market and added 814 cinema sites over the course of the year. This strong performance, along with a better than expected result for the company’s Movio (marketing platform) business, saw the company provide strong profit guidance for the year ahead. Shares closed 12.5 per cent higher on result day. Freightways also posted a good result, reporting a 6 per cent lift in first half profit, thanks to strong revenue and volume growth. Net profit rose to $33.4m from $31.4m on the prior comparable period, while operating earnings gained 6.0 per cent to $38.6m. Shares closed 1.2 per cent higher following the result. Tourism Holdings posted a slightly weaker than expected result, lowering its annual earnings guidance to around $32m, the bottom of its $32m - $34m forecast range.

Markets Authority hasn’t taken a case against the Mainzeal directors, and how it is possible that insurance can apparently cover Shipley’s $6m fine: “Most insurance policies for us dirty peasants include a clause saying that they won’t pay out for intentional, reckless or criminal behaviour – so they won’t pay out if you burn your own house down, or if you crash your car while drunk driving or robbing a bank. Are the rules different for rich corporate directors? If so, it seems to be a perfect case of moral hazard, not to mention a terrible business decision on the part of the insurer.” Unsurprisingly, the Government is now said to be discussing whether to remove the former PM from her role on a state-funded board. RNZ’s Jo Moir reports: “Sources have told RNZ that Dame Jenny’s role on the executive board of The New Zealand China Council had already been an item of discussion amongst senior Cabinet ministers in light of the court judgement”. Moir also says: “It’s understood

Documentary-maker Bryan Bruce sees Shipley’s judicial loss as apt, because the controversy mirrors her time as a politician: “The legacy of both the Bolger and the Shipley neoliberal governments was that they opened up a huge gap between the rich and the poor in our country. “They slashed benefits for example, as a result of which all the diseases that affect poor children the most all shot up”. Bruce points out, “As a result of the Mainzeal collapse a lot of tradesmen were not paid, some of their businesses went under, and it caused their families a lot of stress.” Leftwing blogger No Right Turn is asking why Shipley and her colleagues haven’t faced stronger penalties, saying it “seems to be a straight-up violation of s380(4) of the Companies Act, carrying a penalty of 5 years imprisonment. Which invites the question: why weren’t Shipley and the others prosecuted? Or do those laws against corporate fraud mean nothing?” He questions why the Financial

t’s a big deal when the High Court rules against a former prime minister and fines them $6 million for their reckless business practices. After all, it raises questions about the probity of such former political leaders, especially given that Jenny Shipley has a knighthood and holds the respected honour of being New Zealand’s first female prime minister. This week a High Court judge ruled that Shipley is liable for up to $6m after the collapse of construction company Mainzeal, of which she was the chairperson. Along with her fellow directors, Shipley was deemed by the judge to have been “reckless” in allowing the giant firm to keep trading for nine years while insolvent. She will personally escape the fine, which her insurance will apparently pay. So, does this mean that she gets off scot-free? No, her reputation is hurt, and there are now questions about whether she should relinquish
her knighthood, and whether it’s time for her to step down from her other public and business leadership roles. The most damning response to Shipley’s loss in the High Court is the Dominion Post editorial which says: Shipley’s shiny post-politics career forever tarnished. The newspaper points out that the $110m her company was left owing to creditors has been “borne by the ordinary, hard-working New Zealanders politicians like Shipley usually champion.” And she had that position as a result of her “mana”. Shipley’s loss in court “could hardly have come at a worse time” according to the paper, because it comes on the back of her recent public statements in praise of China. The editorial states: “The Chinese government was clearly using a former New Zealand Prime Minister as a propaganda mouthpiece.” The reaction in the blogosphere has also been severe.

The changing world of aged care T
he world of caring for our elderly is changing and it’s changing rapidly. This is clearly demonstrated in the news today that one of Ashburton’s rest homes is closing its doors. Cameron Courts has been the final home-away-from-home for hundreds of elderly from around the Ashburton District. It was home-away-from-home for my own mother when, at 93, she could no longer live alone. Over years compassionate staff have provided wonderful care in a building that has been more like a large family home rather than a purpose-built care facility. But no matter how good the care, no matter that it passed its last audit with a three year clear-
ance stamp, Cameron Courts is closing. Its resident numbers are dwindling and its owners made the only business decision they could make, shut the doors and move their last remaining residents elsewhere. For the owners, making that decision was about more than making a business decision. They know each of those residents. They’re part of one an-
other’s families and yet they were faced with the unenviable task of telling those residents, most in their 90s, that they needed to pack-up and move. For any older person, moving into care is a watershed moment in their lives. There’s a sense of loss as they know their frail bodies mean they must leave the place that has been their home for many years, the place that holds their memories. Rest home staff do their absolute best to ensure the transition from one home to another is as painless as possible. Inevitably there’s a period of adjustment but, with time, most transplanted elderly adjust and begin to enjoy a new stage in
their lives. And they do that with the expectation they won’t be asked to move again. Unfortunately for 10 older people that is not the case, but the upside is they have choice when it comes to finding a new place to call home. The closure of Cameron Courts raises some issues around the changing face of aged care. Today the emphasis is on keeping the elderly in their homes as long as possible with support from the community. That’s a commendable objective but it comes with one downside, the social isolation that comes for a largely housebound older person. What it also means is that if
a person finally does move into a care facility, they are often in need of a much higher level of care, putting pressure on facilities with hospital beds. And this could indicate care facilities of the future will be weighting their bed numbers heavily at the hospital end. Facilities, such as Cameron Courts, that provide rest home beds only are watching their potential resident pool rapidly dwindle. When a care facility closes, the first question is always, why, but in this instance, the answer is very clear. It has nothing to do with the standard of care, or the facility itself, it has everything to do with a changing market.

In 1916, after evacuating from Gallipoli in December 1915 it was decided that Australian and New Zealand infantry divisions would be sent to the Western Front. In 1966, the Soviet space probe Venera 3 impacted the surface of Venus, becoming the first spacecraft to reach another planet; however, Venera was unable to transmit any data, its communications system having failed. In 1971, a bomb went off inside a men’s room at the US Capitol; the radical group Weather Underground claimed

ho knew? It was a big weekend for me last weekend hosting the Rakaia Salmon Fishing competition prize night. A weekend where I spent time listening as well as yapping. I found out that it is much more than just another fishing competition. It has quite a history for a start. The first competition, held by Rakaia River Fishing Promotions Inc, was held in 1983 with $13,000 in prize money and went for five days. This idea came from Bruce Kelly (owner of Rakaia River Holiday Park at the time), after suggestions from the convenor of the Ninety Mile Beach Snapper competition, with the help of local business people Mike Manion, Brian Nelson, Mark Cromie and others. Each year the sponsored prizes grew along with the prize money. The first five events were held at Whiting’s old shop in Rakaia using the domain for the prizegivings. The 1988 competition was the first to be held in the Community Centre, featured live bands, fishing auctions and a professional compère. This compère, Russell Col-

linson, became a very good friend to many of the organisers and competitors and he continued to come down from Whangarei until the year 2000. In 1991 the competition dropped down to four days then down to three days in 1992. In 2002 the committee decided that, in the interests of conserving fish stocks following the very bad fishing season of 2000-2001, that they would not hold the annual fishing competition. In 2011 the competition was cancelled due to the February earthquake in Christchurch which had affected many people. Contestants had the choice to have a refund or donate their money to the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal and, with the donations from some of the sponsors, Rakaia River Fishing Promotions was able to donate $28440.00 to the appeal.

For those who think the competition just rapes the river of fish, I admit I used to be one of those, the competition does give back in a lot of ways! They have, over the years, contributed to several projects, like the extra fish rearing ponds at Glenariffe which have contributed to the release of around a million salmon fry. Then for several years they contributed more than 15,000 salmon smolt to the Rakaia River each year. They have contributed money to the construction of a stop bank at Double Hill to protect the valuable Double Hill Flats and Glenariffe spawning streams. They have contributed to the reconstruction of Mee’s salmon farm into a Fish & Game hatchery, both with money and volunteer labour. A recent venture has been the purchase of a number of incubation boxes known as Scotty Boxes. These make the planting of eyed ova much easier and also more reliable. They have achieved hatch rates in the high 90 per cent range using them. They have also been involved with Take a Kid Fishing and
donated to the north Rakaia boat ramp. They continue to plant eyed ova in the Rakaia head waters also smolt down in Bully Creek. In the words of President Ken Lee; “Our aim is to put back a lot more than we take out and ultimately would love to set up a hatchery with Fish and Game at Bully Creek and have a sustainable fishery. We want this to be a family event and love it that there were 132 junior entries this year.” I have been the compère for the last two years and have loved working with each and every member of the committee. You won’t find a friendlier and more enthusiastic bunch of volunteers. Mix that with over 600 entrants with an infectious passion for the sport and you got a recipe for success for many years to come. Nasi goreng – spiced lamb chops

10-12 Quality Mark lamb loin chops or 6 Quality Mark lamb leg steaks Nasi goreng spice blend 1T chilli powder 2t garlic powder or garlic salt 2t dried chilli flakes or 1/4 teaspoon chilli powder 1t salt 1t sugar 1/2 t amchur powder 1/2 t ground laos or galangal 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger About 2-3 tablespoons oil Lychees, longan or mango to accompany ■ Trim excess fat from the lamb chops. ■ Mix together all the spices and sprinkle evenly over the lamb. Drizzle with the oil and massage the spice blend into the meat. ■ Set aside for 5 minutes or refrigerate overnight to marinade. ■ Cook the chops or steak on a

barbecue over a moderate heat for 10-15 minutes, turning once, until well browned on the outside but still medium in the inside. ■ Serve the chops or steaks on a large platter scattered with the

On target for the Oaks Cambridge trainer Roger James believes Elate is shaping up as well as any horse he has prepared for the Gr.1 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai New Zealand Oaks (2400m). James and co-trainer Robert Wellwood will produce the Savabeel filly in tomorrow’s Gr.3 McKee Family Sunline Vase (2100m) at Ellerslie, her final leadup for the Oaks at Trentham on March 16. “She’s as good a chance as I’ve had for a New Zealand Oaks,” James said. “I’ve won an Oaks in Australia (Giovana, Gr.1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) in 2000) and I did win the Oaks here with Maurita (in 1982) when I was training with Gibbsy (Hall of Fame trainer Jim Gibbs) but I haven’t had one like this filly for a while.” Elate stamped her New Zealand Oaks credentials with a tough win in the Listed Oaks Prelude (1800m) at New Plymouth at her last start, having earlier finished second to Wednesday’s Gr.2 Lowland Stakes (2100m) winner Queen Of Diamonds in December’s Gr.3 Eulogy Stakes (1600m) at Awapuni. “I was pretty happy with her win the other day. “She’s lacked a bit of luck a couple of times. “We took bad luck out of play last time and she was strong to the line,” James said. “She’s trained on very well. “We opted to run in the Sunline Vase because Auckland is a bit closer than Hastings for the Lowland and we didn’t want to give her three big trips away with New Plymouth, Hastings then

Derby champion Murray Baker knows it isn’t impossible to turn a poor dress rehearsal into a stellar main event because he has done it before. But therein lies the problem as he tries to turn around Cutadeel’s last-start Avondale Guineas shocker heading into tomorrow’s $1m Vodafone Derby at Ellerslie: of all the Derbies Baker has won he has only pulled off the total form turnaround once. “Mongolian Khan did it, he is about the only one,” said Baker. “He went pretty poor at Rosehill then came out and won the Australian Derby at his next start. But I’ve found when they go below par in their final race before a Derby it is very, very hard to turn them around because you don’t have a lot of time.” - NZME

Progressive galloper Ever Loyal will contest the Gr.3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) at Randwick just ten minutes after the Derby and Pike believes he is a good chance of snaring the thick end of the prize in both races. Diverse drives for champion reinsman The two most important drives of Ricky May’s weekend could hardly be more different. But that doesn’t mean the result will be. May treks north to Alexandra Park tonight to try and lead throughout the $125,000 Pascoes Northern Oaks with Wainui Creek. That is not giving away any sort of pre-race secrets as May, who can sometimes lean toward the conservative, is open about what he intends to do in the classic. “She hasn’t had a lot of good draws and she has finally got one so I will be trying to use it,” says May. “So she will attempting to stay in front all the way, and if they are good enough to come from behind her and beat her, then so be it.” Wainui Creek returned to racing with a storming late third at

Alexandra Park last Friday night and after drawing the ace she and arch rival Belle Of Montana (two) completely dominate the market for the Oaks, the feature race at Alexandra Park’s premier meeting to start their Derby week. Wainui Creek has been able to get in front of Belle Of Montana the last two times they have met and been run down by the northern speed machine both times but this time she could be on the markers while the latter could be covering extra ground in the running line, so often the kiss of death in Alexandra Park staying races. “That other filly (Belle Of Montana) is very fast but I think you will see the best of Wainui Creek up to the 2700m distance,” says May. While May has only one plan in the Oaks he is going to let the horse do the talking when champion trotter Monbet returns on Sunday.
Ricky May will be clocking up the air points this weekend. The incredible trotter hasn’t raced for over 27 months and at times during that period it felt as though his injuries would rob us
of ever seeing him again. But after a bold trial at Rangiora last week he has accepted to start in a 1980m mobile trot at Addington on Sunday afternoon in which he has drawn the outside of the front line. “Greg (Hope, trainer) thought that it was easier to go back to the races than chase them off a long mark at the trials,” explains May. “But after such a long break from racing it is a big, big ask to expect him to win. “He felt great at the trials last week and most importantly very sound but winning might be another thing.” So how does a driver approach driving the best trotter, and maybe even the best harness horse in the country, fresh up after such a gigantic break? “I can’t go out there with a plan. “I will have to just drive him how he feels but I really don’t think he will win.” - HRNZ
Pukekohe trainer Richard Collett is bullish about three-year-old filly Tiger Silk’s chances heading into the Listed Mufhasa Fasttrack Stakes (1300m) at Ellerslie tomorrow. Reds embracing challenge Fond memories are fuelling the Queensland Reds’ “bring it on” approach to tomorrow’s clash with Super Rugby heavyweights the Crusaders at Suncorp Stadium. That’s the message from the Reds’ attacking mastermind Jim McKay, who is confident the hosts can halt the Christchurch outfit’s record 17-game winning streak. Queensland haven’t beaten the Crusaders since the 2011 final and are $5 roughies to repeat the dose this weekend against the back-to-back defending champions. But it was a round two victory the season prior, when McKay was also at the helm, that’s providing inspiration this week. Queensland had lost 30-28 to the Waratahs in round one, but bounced back to beat the New Zealand powerhouse 41-20 at home in a 2010 win that kickstarted a charge that resulted in a title the following year. Attack coach McKay said that result had been on his mind following last weekend’s 36-31 loss to the Highlanders. “I reference that in my own head and talked about it earlier in the week,” McKay said. “We lost the game (to the Highlanders), everyone saying we played well but we were hard on ourselves and it’s been a similar approach to this game (as in 2010). “We’re still developing, but bring it on ... we’re Queenslanders, we’re going to go for it.” A shift to No.6 for Lukhan Salakaia-Loto to partner Angus Scott-Young in the backrow signals the Reds’ intentions, with McKay acknowledging they needed to set a physical benchmark early. “You have to do that, you need to disrupt their rhythm and flow,” he said.

Massive change coming International rugby is braced for the biggest change in modern history with plans to create a World League that will see Japan and the USA join the Rugby Championship set to be signed off as early as next month. The Herald understands a 12-team World League has captured the imagination of the leading nations and that an unknown broadcaster has already tabled an offer to finance the concept in a deal that will be worth around $10m$14m a season for each nation. Backline shuffle The unbeaten Crusaders have overhauled their backline for the match against the Reds in Brisbane, with All Blacks David Havili and Ryan Crotty among those to make way. Four of the five starting changes come in the backline, although fiveeighth Richie Mo’unga has been retained for a third successive start. Exciting young fullback Will Jordan replaces Havili while veteran midfielder Tim Bateman takes Crotty’s spot and will mark Samu Kerevi. In brief England wins thriller Jos Buttler and Chris Gayle went toe-to-toe with two titanic centuries as England defeated the West Indies by 29 runs yesterday in a scintillating fourth one-day international. Buttler made careerbest 150 in 77 balls, blazing his last hundred runs in just 31 deliveries as England posted a mountainous total of 418-6. But Gayle set up a tense finale by smashing 162, before England held on to take a 2-1 series lead. “I think it just shows there are going to be unbelievable days of cricket and when someone like Chris Gayle’s in the opposition you can lose those games,” Buttler said. “We were put under great pressure and I thought the guys did well to stand up to it.” - PA

A number of Mid Canterbury bowling titles go on the line this weekend and it’s a case of anyone’s game. After the prestige of the Lowry Cup tournament last weekend, things stay at a strong pace over the weekend, with the Champion of Champion Triples tomorrow at the MSA Bowling Club, before the attention turns to club supremacy on Sunday for the Gala and Challenge Cups and the Women’s Premier and the Women’s Prestige. The Allenton bowlers will be out to defend their titles in both of the women’s events on Sunday which are being played on their home turf. They claimed both events last year and the same four clubs will
line up in both of the two competitions. The defending champions will be joined by teams from Methven, Ashburton and Rakaia. The Premier Cup sees clubs nominate their four best players to compete in the competition, which is a straight knockout, with winners from the first round of games qualifying for the main division and those beaten competing for the plate title. Methven and Rakaia will lock horns in a round one clash, while Ashburton and Allenton will do battle in the other. The Prestige Cup being played in a round robin format this year, with the winner decided on wins, draws and points differential with ends won to be the determining tie-breaker if required.
The Gala Cup for the men, which is run on the same premise at the Premier Cup for the women will see Rakaia and Methven battling it out in the first round at Hampstead while Hinds and Allenton play one of the other matches and Ashburton and Hampstead the other. Ashburton MSA gets the run through the first-round courtesy of the bye. The Challenge Cup is being run under the same format, with Ashburton MSA and Ashburton playing each other, Methven taking on Hinds and Allenton playing Hampstead with Rakaia enjoying the bye. The Challenge Cup is being played at the Allenton Bowling Club. Hampstead are the defending champions in the Gala Cup,
while Allenton currently hold the Challenge Cup. On Saturday three Champion of Champion Triples titles will go on the line; Senior Men, Senior Women and Junior Men. All matches are being played at the Ashburton MSA Bowling Club. In the men’s competition, Ashburton MSA and Allenton face a first-round clash, Ashburton plays Hampstead and Methven will go up against Hinds with Rakaia getting the bye. In the women’s event, Methven plays Rakaia and Ashburton takes on Allenton. The Junior Men are also made up of four teams, with Methven playing Ashburton and Allenton taking on the Ashburton MSA. There is no junior women’s title this year.

Vettel’s crash in the morning at the Circuit de Catalunya was the team’s first pre-season setback after looking quick and reliable so far. Sergio Aguero’s 59th minute penalty at Etihad Stadium gave champions Manchester City a 1-0 win over West Ham to stay a point behind Jurgen Klopp’s side. The result kept Liverpool top on 69 points, just ahead of Manchester City on 68 points after the champions’ slender win. - PA

Razor Robertson a special guest speaker Crusaders Super Rugby coach, Scott Robertson has been finalised as the guest speaker for the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union’s annual JAB Fundraiser next month. Robertson, who has led the Crusaders to glory in the past two Super Rugby competitions will entertain guests of the evening which is being held at the Hotel Ashburton on Thursday, April 4. Robertson is one of the most colourful characters in the world
of rugby but is equally as well known for his impressive record both as a coach and as a former player in which he played for both the Crusaders and the All Blacks. He played 23 matches for the All Blacks and 86 games for the Crusaders as well as appearances for both Bay Of Plenty and Canterbury before moving to Europe where he appeared for North Ireland club, Ards and French Club, Pepignan. He also played for the
Ricoh Black Rams in Japan before retiring in 2007. After working in an assistant role for Canterbury for five years, he took the helm of the provincial side in 2013 and lef them to two Premiership Division victories before being appointed the role of Crusaders head coach in in 2016 where he has since led them to back-to-back titles. Robertson also had a stint as the coach of the New Zealand
Under-20 side and is touted as a front-runner for a future spot at the helm of the All Blacks. Known for his celebratory break-dancing routines and his exuberant personality, he is guaranteed to delight and entertain as he shares his thoughts about leadership in a Q & A style session. As well as Robertson’s speaking engagement, the night also features a buffet dinner and a fundraising auction for which the Mid
Canterbury Rugby Union is on the search for donated goods. All proceeds from the night will go directly into supporting junior rugby in the Mid Canterbury catchment. Black Caps in charge By Niall aNdersoN Bangladesh were poised to give the Black Caps a fierce fight, but then Neil Wagner put them on the back foot – literally. Wagner’s traditional short-ball barrage was too much for the visitors to handle, as they wasted an exceptional innings from Tamim Iqbal, slumping from 121-1 to 234 all out on day one of the first test at Hamilton’s Seddon Park. At stumps, the Black Caps had waltzed to 86-0, to take a semblance of control which didn’t look likely when Iqbal was unleashing. Early on, the Bangladesh opener was on track to become just the seventh player to score a century before lunch on the first day of a test. While he ended up 15 runs short, he reached his ninth test century shortly after lunch, needing just 100 balls to raise his bat and soak in the applause from his team-mates. After failing in the one-day series, Iqbal’s bold strategy was to continue batting like he was playing an ODI, and this time it worked, as Bangladesh flew out of the gates.

Ashburton’s water-skiing dynamos, the Donaldson twins, are set to take on the world again, but this time, they’re in the big leagues. Hugh and George Donaldson jetted off to Australia yesterday as part of a 14-strong Kiwi contingent to compete at the Oceania Championships for the New Zealand Open Waterski Team at Latrobe, just out of Melbourne. The competition will see two teams of six, plus a reserve for each
team made from the 14-member squad and they will compete in the open and over-35 titles during the competition. Age group stars up until this point, it’s a step up in competition for the Donaldson twins at Latrobe. Both made podiums at the last Asia-Oceania championships, where Hugh won gold overall and George took the bronze in the under-17 boys championship, but now they take on the open grade, they are expected to face some
stiff competition – particularly from the local Australian side. “We’re expecting it to be tough,” said mum, Janeen Donaldson, who is also the New Zealand Oceania team manager. “Particularly from the Australians. “Their best chances of making the finals cut-offs are likely in the tricks or jumps.” The competition will also see some independent international skiers in action in the open competition as they ready themselves
for the Moomba Championships which are held on the Yarra River next week. Some Kiwis will stay on for the Moomba, but Hugh and George are returning to New Zealand and getting back to their studies as they both complete their final year at Ara this year. Donaldson said returning to Latrobe felt a bit like going full circle for the family. “Karl was the first Donaldson selected to a NZ ski team back in 2007 and he and Neil (father) went
over for the annual OZ-Kiwi challenge. “Now we’re returning 12 years later for the Oceanias with the twins at the top of their ski careers.” The Latrobe skiing set-up is built on a power station lake, and with it being an inland site, the temperatures are expected to be soaring and the prospect of minimal wind has everyone involved hopeful of some high scores throughout the course of the competition.
